  1. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer. Let us pray.

  2. Our Father in heaven, as we gather in your name this evening hour, we thank you for the shelter of this place.

  3. We thank you for the peace that we can have, the calm that we enjoy in the midst of coming round your word when all around us there seems to be the storms of life as well as the natural storms.

  4. We thank you for the great joy that there is in coming among your people and together to worship you, whether it's hearing the word and the presence of one another here or whether we tune in online at home.

  5. We do pray to know your peace with us and to know that you are near, that you are speaking to us.

  6. And we thank you for these words that we have sung together, the words that speak about the enduring nature of your city and the citadels, the towers that surround it.

  7. And speaking of the great wonder of the strength of your place and where your people gather, for it is a city that will always endure, the city of the Lord.

  8. And we thank you that you are the one who keeps it secure, that you keep your people secure down through all the generations.

  9. We thank you that we can, with the psalmist, reflect and look back and contemplate your steadfast love, the steadfast love that the psalmist was able to see in his own experience and that God's people saw in so many different ways,

  10. that enduring steadfast love that you have surrounded your people with.

  11. And we thank you that that is an unchanging love, that your steadfast love is towards us this day,

  12. that the same strength and security that you gave your people then, that you give to your people today,

  13. and that we have that great assurance that whatever rocks this world, whatever shakes the world that we live in,

  14. and knowing ultimately that the great shaking that will come in the day of judgment,

  15. that there is a security in you, and that all who believe and trust in you, they will never be taken from you.

  16. And so we thank you for your great steadfast love in that way.

  17. And we pray that so many others would come to know and experience it for themselves,

  18. that even this evening as we read your word together, as we are reminded of the great benefits that you show towards us,

  19. all that is ours in Christ, that it would become fresh and anew to us all,

  20. and especially to those who have never tasted it before,

  21. that it would become a moment that would open their hearts to receive your word,

  22. and to enjoy the warmth and the blessing of it.

  23. Our hearts that are hard, Lord, we know that you are able to melt them.

  24. We know that, for you have done it to your people.

  25. You have done it to us in the past.

  26. You have done it to people down through all the generations.

  27. We think even of the Apostle Paul and how strong he was in his opposition.

  28. He was persecuting the church, putting your people to the sword,

  29. bringing them so much cruelty, breathing out cruelties, as the word says.

  30. And yet in a moment, you brought him to see the power of God,

  31. and to see the wonder of Christ, and to know your spirit working in him.

  32. And we thank you that they marveled at Paul,

  33. in the same way as they marvel at, we can marvel at the people that you bring to faith to this day.

  34. We see so many lives transformed, even when we look at ourselves, Lord,

  35. the things that were impossible for us to do because of the sinful nature that we have,

  36. and how you brought us to know your grace, your mercy.

  37. And we do thank you for that, and help us to always have that before us,

  38. in order to lose our wonder at the precious nature of your covenant promises,

  39. of all your steadfast promises towards your people,

  40. that we will keep them always in mind, and long to know them more and more,

  41. not just for ourselves, but for all around us.

  42. In the midst of troubles, anxieties, fears, and worries that so many people have,

  43. we pray for the peace of God that passes understanding to surround your people in so many different ways.

  44. And we do thank you again for the church that you are building, that we are part of.

  45. We are not just a congregation here, but we thank you, Lord,

  46. that today is a day of worship to you, a day that has been put aside for that very purpose from the very beginning of time,

  47. a day set aside when we put everything else to one side and come to worship you,

  48. to fellowship with your people, to look to you, to refresh ourselves in you,

  49. in all our activities of the day, that we would find our rest in you and refreshment for today,

  50. and also as we go into the week ahead, that it would be an encouragement to us to feel and know your presence here

  51. and to go out into the working week ahead, or school week, or whatever we are involved in,

  52. whatever we are doing, to know that refreshing power of your Spirit with us,

  53. to know the joy of the Lord as our strength, and to know the wonder of your grace and salvation.

  54. And we pray, Lord, that your people near and far would know and experience that day after day.

  55. For your people are to all ends of the earth, as the Word describes the great vastness of the world in which we live,

  56. and we see it so much ourselves as we see the wonder of satellite images and the enormity of the world,

  57. and yet the enormity of the number of people, yet the wonder of your knowledge towards us,

  58. that there is no one and nothing hidden from you,

  59. but that when the sun rises from the east to the west throughout your days,

  60. that you have that knowledge of your people.

  61. And even as the sun sets and as people go to sleep, as they lay down in the watches of the night,

  62. we know that you never slumber or sleep, as the Word reminds us,

  63. and that you are one who is constantly watching over.

  64. And so we pray, Lord, for all your people, near and far, that you would bless them,

  65. that you would encourage, that you would remember those who are persecuted,

  66. that you remember those who are in very difficult situations and circumstances,

  67. whether it's in times of fear or worry or natural disaster, war or famine.

  68. There are so many things going on, O Lord, in this world,

  69. and we just pray for your goodness and mercy to be over us.

  70. We do remember the cause of your church here.

  71. We thank you for all our people and for all the endeavors to reach out with your Word.

  72. Again, we commit the vacancy at this time to you and the committee that meet on Tuesday evening

  73. for your blessing and wisdom and guidance towards them.

  74. We pray, Lord, for patience as we wait upon you in these things

  75. and that you would ultimately guide us, Lord, that you would show us your will

  76. and that your will be done.

  77. We remember, too, the prayer meetings through the week,

  78. thankful for all that takes place where people gather in your name,

  79. whether it's in Laxdale on Tuesday evening,

  80. in the Seminary on Wednesday and Thursday for English and Gaelic,

  81. we thank you for that unity in prayer.

  82. We pray that you will build us up in that way

  83. and help us always to be a praying people,

  84. coming together to worship you and to wait upon you,

  85. to look to you in dependence for all things.

  86. We thank you, too, for being able to pray for so many different matters going on around us

  87. and as we think of that response that we see on our bulletin that was involved with Tesco

  88. and just the wider issue of the Lord's Day in our islands and far and wide.

  89. Lord, we do pray for blessing and peace to reign over your day and over your people

  90. and that you would bring people to see the wisdom that there is in rest.

  91. It is not just something that Christians seek to demand of people,

  92. but it's something that you and your wisdom have given from the very creation of the world,

  93. an appointment that the more people try to do, the more they see that there is no end to work,

  94. there is no end to tiredness or frustrations or no end to the life and the wheel that we seem to be so often caught up in.

  95. But yet, O Lord, we thank you that you give a break in the week

  96. and it's a wise day to use for your glory and ultimately for rest for all things.

  97. And so we pray, Lord, for people to see and know the wisdom of God in all of that.

  98. And we pray too, Lord, for our young people.

  99. We thank you for them, for the Sunday school, the creche, the tweenies,

  100. for the explorers, the YF and all that goes on with all our young people.

  101. We ask your blessing on all that is done for them and upon them in school as well,

  102. with the teachers and staff and primary schools and the high school.

  103. And we pray for protection, for blessing, for help for those who will soon be sitting prelims in these coming weeks.

  104. As we prepare for them, Lord, take away anxieties, fears and worries that they might have.

  105. I help them to lean upon you and to trust on you and to pray to you for help in the midst of it.

  106. We do pray for students away from home as well.

  107. We remember them, Lord, and ask your blessing over them,

  108. many as they go back to universities and colleges in these coming weeks,

  109. that you would bless them and watch over them.

  110. We remember those belonging to the congregation here in the past

  111. who have gone on to serve you in ministry in different ways.

  112. Remember Muriel, thankful for her, for her ministry in Cambodia.

  113. Remember Scott and Fiona and the girls as they are in North Harris now.

  114. Bless them, Lord, be with them.

  115. Remember Muriel Campbell as he has moved away to Enoch Bain and awaits an induction there.

  116. We pray for your blessing over him and the family.

  117. And as they settle there, as the induction comes around, Lord,

  118. that your blessing be on the congregation.

  119. Think of Roddy Barvis.

  120. He's been connected to this congregation in the past.

  121. And as he comes to us in a few weeks' time, Lord,

  122. we pray for encouragement together as he springs to us the work of international mission too.

  123. And just ask your blessing on him in that work.

  124. And so in all these things, Lord, we look to you,

  125. thankful for the gift of prayer and yet so much that we could still pray for,

  126. that you know our hearts, Lord.

  127. You know our desires.

  128. You know our needs.

  129. And so we lay them before you and ask in all things that you will hear us,

  130. you will pardon us for our sin,

  131. and that your will be done in all things.

  132. So go with us now.

  133. Bless your word as we sing it,

  134. as we open it up, reading it together and sharing from it,

  135. that you would guide us in all of our thoughts.

  136. For we ask it all in Jesus' name and for his sake.

  137. Amen.

  138. Sing.

  139. Sing.

  140. O God, what time thou didst go forth

  141. before thy people's face,

  142. and when through the great wilderness,

  143. thy glorious marching was.

  144. Then at God's presence shook the earth,

  145. and drops from heaven fell,

  146. the sign I shook before the Lord,

  147. the God of Israel.

  148. O God, how to thine heritage

  149. did send a plenteous rain,

  150. whereby thou went and weary was,

  151. didst it refresh again.

  152. Thy congregation then

  153. did make their habitation there,

  154. of thine own goodness for the poor.

  155. O God, thou didst prepare,

  156. the Lord himself did give the word,

  157. the word abroad did spread.

  158. Great was the company of them,

  159. the same who published it.

  160. We'll turn and read God's word together now.

  161. We're going to read first of all

  162. in the Gospel of John, chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  163. Gospel of John, chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  164. we're going to read from the beginning

  165. down to verse 18,

  166. and then we'll turn to the book of Psalms

  167. and Psalm 103.

  168. So our first reading is in the Gospel of John,

    John 1 chapter mention

  169. chapter 1.

  170. In the beginning was the Word,

  171. and the Word was with God,

  172. and the Word was God.

  173. He was in the beginning with God.

  174. All things were made through him,

  175. and without him was not anything made

  176. that was made.

  177. In him was life,

  178. and the life was the light of men.

  179. The light shines in the darkness,

  180. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  181. There was a man sent from God

  182. whose name was John.

  183. He came as a witness

  184. to bear witness about the light

  185. that all might believe through him.

  186. He was not the light,

  187. but came to bear witness about the light.

  188. The true light which enlightens everyone

  189. was coming into the world.

  190. He was in the world,

  191. and the world was made through him.

  192. Yet the world did not know him.

  193. He came to his own,

  194. and his own people did not receive him.

  195. But to all who did receive him,

  196. who believed in his name,

  197. he gave the right to become children of God,

  198. who were born not of blood,

  199. not of the will of the flesh,

  200. not of the will of man,

  201. but of God.

  202. And the Word became flesh,

  203. and dwelt among us.

  204. And we have seen his glory,

  205. glorious of the only Son,

  206. from the Father,

  207. full of grace and truth.

  208. John bore witness about him,

  209. and cried out,

  210. This was he of whom I said,

  211. He who comes after me ranks before me,

  212. because he was before me.

  213. And from his fullness

  214. we have all received grace upon grace.

  215. For the law was given through Moses.

  216. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

  217. No one has ever seen God.

  218. The only God,

  219. who is at the Father's side,

  220. he has made him known.

  221. Then we'll turn to a reading in Psalm 103,

  222. in the book of Psalms.

  223. And we can read from the beginning of the Psalm,

  224. down to verse 13.

  225. Psalm 103.

  226. You'll find this around page 602.

  227. We read from the beginning,

  228. down to verse 13.

  229. Bless the Lord, O my soul,

  230. and all that is within me.

  231. Bless his holy name.

  232. Bless the Lord, O my soul,

  233. and forget not all his benefits.

  234. Who forgives all your iniquities.

  235. Who heals all your diseases.

  236. Who redeems your life from the pit.

  237. Who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy.

  238. Who satisfies you with good,

  239. so that your youth is renewed like the eagles.

  240. The Lord works righteousness and justice

  241. for all who are oppressed.

  242. He made known his ways to Moses,

  243. his acts to the people of Israel.

  244. The Lord is merciful and gracious,

  245. slow to anger,

  246. and abounding in steadfast love.

  247. He will not always chide,

  248. nor will he keep his anger forever.

  249. He does not deal with us according to our sins,

  250. nor repay us according to our iniquities.

  251. For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

  252. so great is his steadfast love

  253. towards those who fear him.

  254. As far as east is from the west,

  255. so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

  256. As our Father shows compassion to his children,

  257. so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

  258. And so on.

  259. And may God bless these readings from his word.

  260. Before we come and look at this passage together,

  261. we'll sing again in Psalm 147.

  262. The Sing Psalms Version, page 193.

  263. We're singing from verse 14 down to the end of the psalm.

  264. Psalm 147, page 193.

  265. At verse 14,

  266. We'll sing from verse 14 down to the end of the psalm.

  267. The Lord will grant you peace within

  268. The borders of your land,

  269. And finest wheat will fill your fields

  270. From his sustaining hand

  271. To all the corners of the earth,

  272. The Lord's commands proceed

  273. For when he speaks,

  274. His word goes forth

  275. Through all the world with speed

  276. He spreads the snow

  277. As wool the frost

  278. Like ashes on the land

  279. He hurls forth, I say

  280. Hail like stones

  281. Who can such gold withstand

  282. But when he sends

  283. His mighty word

  284. And makes the warm wind

  285. The frozen waters

  286. Start to melt

  287. And once again

  288. To flow

  289. To Jacob

  290. God

  291. Declares

  292. His word

  293. And makes

  294. His doctrines

  295. Known

  296. His ordinances

  297. He reveals

  298. He reveals

  299. To Israel

  300. Alone

  301. He has not dealt

  302. In such a way

  303. With any other race

  304. To us

  305. To us

  306. Alone

  307. He shows

  308. His laws

  309. O praise

  310. The Lord

  311. Of grace

  312. We can turn back

  313. Together

  314. To our second reading

  315. In the book of Psalms

  316. In Psalm 103

  317. This evening

  318. We're going to look

  319. At the section

  320. From verse 6

  321. Down to verse 13

  322. But just

  323. Bear in mind

  324. Verse 2

  325. Which is the theme

  326. Of the psalm

  327. That we started

  328. Looking at a couple

  329. Of weeks ago

  330. In verse 2

  331. It says

  332. Bless the Lord

  333. O my soul

  334. And forget

  335. Not all his benefits

  336. Forget not all his benefits

  337. And then in the psalm

  338. It goes on to outline

  339. The benefits

  340. That are ours

  341. Through God

  342. And so we continue

  343. That theme

  344. In verse 6

  345. To verse 13

  346. This evening

  347. We're going to look

  348. At some of the benefits

  349. That we find here

  350. In verse 6

  351. It says

  352. The Lord

  353. Works righteousness

  354. And justice

  355. For all who are oppressed

  356. He made known

  357. His ways

  358. To Moses

  359. His acts

  360. To the people

  361. Of Israel

  362. And so it goes on

  363. We all experience

  364. Times of reflection

  365. In our lives

  366. In different ways

  367. We come to points

  368. And experiences

  369. Sometimes it can be

  370. Because of appointed days

  371. Or special days

  372. That come our way

  373. Rememberance day

  374. Is always a time

  375. Of reflection

  376. When we look back

  377. And remember

  378. Great sacrifice

  379. Made for us

  380. Our new year's day

  381. It's always a time

  382. When we reflect

  383. We've just had that

  384. And I'm sure

  385. Many of us

  386. Spent some time

  387. There reflecting

  388. And looking back

  389. On our own lives

  390. Or on the past year

  391. The lives of others

  392. It's a time

  393. Of just looking

  394. And seeing

  395. What's going on

  396. Around us

  397. So we can see it

  398. In a broad way

  399. We can also see it

  400. In a narrow way

  401. In our own lives too

  402. When we think of

  403. Our own personal

  404. Reflections

  405. Or remembrances

  406. It can be

  407. Maybe a significant date

  408. In our own experience

  409. In life

  410. It might be a special occasion

  411. A happy occasion

  412. It could also be

  413. A sad occasion

  414. That brings to mind

  415. Things from the past

  416. Or even things

  417. In the present

  418. That we reflect on

  419. So we have them

  420. In a personal way

  421. And in a broad way

  422. In a general sense too

  423. But we also have

  424. Moments of remembrance

  425. When we see

  426. In the scriptures too

  427. When you look

  428. Through God's word

  429. You find

  430. That God

  431. God has always

  432. Put that significance

  433. Of remembrance

  434. Into the hearts

  435. Of his people

  436. You think of

  437. The Old Testament

  438. And the remembrance

  439. Of the deliverance

  440. The exodus

  441. From Egypt

  442. He gave them

  443. The Passover

  444. Something that they

  445. Were to remember

  446. In all the generations

  447. Afterwards

  448. To remember

  449. The deliverance

  450. That God

  451. Had given to them

  452. And then you see

  453. In the New Testament

  454. As we see the Passover

  455. Being replaced

  456. By the Lord's Supper

  457. And the deliverance

  458. From sin

  459. For God's people

  460. Through the sacrifice

  461. Made by Jesus Christ

  462. So we have the Lord's Supper

  463. That we continue

  464. To remember

  465. And it's a time

  466. Of reflection

  467. Personal reflection

  468. Congregational reflection

  469. And just reflection

  470. In general

  471. As to the benefits

  472. That we read of

  473. Here in Psalm 103

  474. For example

  475. We reflect on

  476. God's goodness

  477. To us

  478. And in many ways

  479. We're seeing in this

  480. Psalm

  481. David reflecting

  482. And looking back

  483. In his own experience

  484. And also

  485. Looking forward

  486. In his own experience

  487. Too

  488. And in his reflection

  489. You see

  490. Sometimes it's a very

  491. Personal reflection

  492. Very intimate to himself

  493. Other times

  494. It's looking in a broader

  495. Sense as well

  496. But what he's doing

  497. For us

  498. Is showing us

  499. The benefits

  500. That are ours

  501. In Christ

  502. And for ourselves

  503. This evening

  504. We're thinking of it

  505. Under that heading

  506. The believer's benefits

  507. To know

  508. The benefits

  509. That he's speaking of here

  510. We must as a people

  511. Have faith

  512. In the Lord Jesus Christ

  513. To enjoy

  514. These benefits

  515. In their fullness

  516. And David here

  517. Is just looking at

  518. In this sense

  519. And from his very soul

  520. It begins with that sense

  521. In the Psalm

  522. In verse 1

  523. Bless the Lord

  524. Oh my soul

  525. And all that is within me

  526. There's a sense

  527. Of everything that I am

  528. Everything that I have

  529. I want to praise it

  530. I want to give praise

  531. To you Lord

  532. For all of your benefits

  533. To me

  534. And so we began

  535. Looking at this Psalm

  536. A couple of weeks ago

  537. Looking at the benefits

  538. And we saw

  539. In verse 1 to 5

  540. The benefits

  541. That David

  542. Outlines for us

  543. We saw forgiveness

  544. Healing

  545. Redemption

  546. Crowning

  547. And satisfying

  548. And we went into

  549. The details

  550. Of just what

  551. These benefits

  552. Mean

  553. And meant

  554. And we want to

  555. Continue that theme

  556. This evening

  557. By looking at this

  558. Psalm

  559. And see the benefits

  560. That we see

  561. In verse 6 to 13

  562. And there's four

  563. I want to highlight

  564. To us this evening

  565. But before we

  566. Before we do come

  567. Into the details

  568. Of it

  569. Before we look

  570. At it some more

  571. I want to first

  572. Share something

  573. That Charles Spurgeon

  574. Said about this

  575. Psalm

  576. It's like a chord

  577. With me

  578. And it just

  579. Helps us to see

  580. Just the wonder

  581. Of these words

  582. As we look at them

  583. He's got away

  584. With words

  585. Charles Spurgeon

  586. So I don't mind

  587. Quoting him

  588. His words

  589. Are more eloquent

  590. Than mine

  591. But he says this

  592. As in the lofty Alps

  593. Some peaks

  594. Rise above all others

  595. So among even

  596. The inspired psalms

  597. There are heights

  598. Of song

  599. Which overtop

  600. The rest

  601. This 103rd Psalm

  602. Has ever seemed

  603. To us

  604. To be the Mount Rosa

  605. Of the divine chain

  606. Of mountains

  607. Of praise

  608. Glowing with

  609. A ruddier light

  610. Than any of the rest

  611. It is as the apple tree

  612. Among the trees

  613. Of the wood

  614. And its golden fruit

  615. Has a flavour

  616. Such as no fruit

  617. Ever bears

  618. Unless it has been

  619. Ripened

  620. In the full sunshine

  621. Of marshy

  622. He's got away

  623. With words

  624. All right

  625. But what you see

  626. Him saying there

  627. Is basically that

  628. Although all the word

  629. Of God

  630. Is precious

  631. We're not

  632. Putting it on

  633. A pedestal

  634. In that sense

  635. Every word

  636. Is God breathed

  637. But yet he says

  638. There are these ones

  639. That just seem to

  640. Rise higher

  641. Than the others

  642. The mountaintops

  643. Mount Rosa

  644. Is one of the highest

  645. Peaks

  646. In the Alps

  647. And he's saying

  648. On its pinnacle

  649. You're just seeing

  650. The height

  651. The wonder

  652. The glory of it

  653. And that Psalm

  654. 103

  655. In the midst of others

  656. It rises above

  657. And just shows us

  658. The wonder

  659. Of God's mercies

  660. And God's benefits

  661. Towards us

  662. And so this evening

  663. We want to continue

  664. To climb this mountain

  665. To see

  666. What David is saying

  667. To us

  668. About these benefits

  669. And just see

  670. The wonder

  671. Of these benefits

  672. To all who believe

  673. In the Lord Jesus

  674. And so like I said

  675. There's four

  676. I want to look at

  677. This evening

  678. Four benefits

  679. From verse 6

  680. To verse 13

  681. The first one

  682. Is this

  683. God acts

  684. For us

  685. That's one of our benefits

  686. The second one

  687. Is he is merciful

  688. And patient

  689. The third one

  690. Is he is gracious

  691. And the fourth

  692. He is compassionate

  693. So we want to go

  694. Through these four

  695. First of all

  696. God acts

  697. For us

  698. We see this

  699. In verse 6

  700. And verse 7

  701. I'm sure

  702. You've either

  703. Said it

  704. Or you've heard

  705. This said

  706. Maybe you've said it

  707. Today

  708. Maybe you've said it

  709. More than once today

  710. Do I have to do

  711. Everything myself

  712. Maybe you've just said it

  713. In the last hour

  714. Before coming out

  715. To church

  716. Do I have to do

  717. Everything myself

  718. You've asked someone

  719. To do something

  720. And the usual reply

  721. Is in a minute

  722. And a couple of hours

  723. Later you come back

  724. Nothing's done

  725. Do I have to do

  726. Everything myself

  727. As David reflects

  728. On the benefits here

  729. It's almost like

  730. He's being reminded

  731. Of God

  732. Who's saying

  733. Do I have to do

  734. Everything myself

  735. For you

  736. But not in a way

  737. Of having a goal

  738. But in a sense

  739. Of just realising

  740. As David would

  741. And we should

  742. Our own helplessness

  743. That we cannot act

  744. In the ways that God can

  745. And the way God has

  746. For his people

  747. That we realise

  748. That our cause

  749. Is hopeless

  750. Except the Lord

  751. Act on our behalf

  752. He says there in verse 6

  753. The Lord works

  754. Righteousness and justice

  755. For all who are oppressed

  756. He has made known

  757. His ways to Moses

  758. His acts

  759. To the people

  760. Of Israel

  761. And what we see here

  762. Is left to our own devices

  763. We stumble

  764. And we fall

  765. Left to our own devices

  766. We would say to the Lord

  767. In a minute

  768. I'll sort it

  769. And yet we leave things

  770. We leave things undone

  771. But the great benefit

  772. That we see here

  773. Is that the Lord

  774. Acts for us

  775. And we see He acts here

  776. In two different ways

  777. He acts in His actions

  778. In what He does

  779. But also in what He says

  780. In His words

  781. The Lord acts for us

  782. How do you deal

  783. With the sin

  784. In this world

  785. How do you make things right

  786. We would love

  787. To put everything right

  788. In this world

  789. We would love

  790. To have justice

  791. In this world

  792. To those who are oppressed

  793. We would love

  794. To be able to take them

  795. Out of that oppression

  796. To right every wrong

  797. In this world

  798. But we can't

  799. We can't do it

  800. And when we look

  801. At ourselves

  802. Our own righteousness

  803. Our own actions

  804. They're just like

  805. Filthy rags

  806. Before the Lord

  807. There is nothing

  808. That we can put right

  809. In this world

  810. By ourselves

  811. Because we are spoiled

  812. We are marred

  813. By sin

  814. But what we find here

  815. Is that the Lord

  816. Works

  817. The Lord

  818. Acts

  819. He acts righteously

  820. And He acts on justice

  821. To all who are oppressed

  822. And He speaks

  823. He has made known

  824. His way to Moses

  825. His acts

  826. To the people of Israel

  827. He has continued

  828. To speak

  829. To His people

  830. And that's what we sang of

  831. In Psalm 147

  832. The last psalm

  833. That we just sung

  834. In verse 18

  835. It says

  836. But when He sends

  837. His mighty word

  838. And makes the warm winds blow

  839. The frozen waters

  840. Start to melt

  841. And once again

  842. To flow

  843. It's this image

  844. Just like what we've seen

  845. Overnight

  846. Last night

  847. How the snow

  848. And the ice

  849. Was there

  850. But when that warm wind

  851. Comes

  852. It disappears

  853. How quickly

  854. It's gone today

  855. And that's

  856. The way we can see

  857. That God acts

  858. That in the same way

  859. That as He speaks

  860. And as He acts

  861. He is able to do things

  862. That we could never do

  863. Ourselves

  864. It's impossible

  865. If we were to think

  866. Of this for ourselves

  867. And think

  868. Well

  869. We have to sort

  870. These problems

  871. We have to sort

  872. The injustice

  873. To people

  874. We have to sort

  875. Our own righteousness

  876. We have to be right

  877. With God

  878. By ourselves

  879. It would be such

  880. A burden

  881. That we could never

  882. Carry it

  883. We could never manage it

  884. We could never do it

  885. But the benefit

  886. That we have

  887. Is that the Lord

  888. Works

  889. And the Lord

  890. Acts

  891. God has acted

  892. On our behalf

  893. There is no justice

  894. That we could achieve

  895. Ourselves

  896. There is no salvation

  897. That we could achieve

  898. Ourselves

  899. It is He

  900. That acts

  901. And we thank God

  902. That He does

  903. The Lord has

  904. Acted on our behalf

  905. The Lord has showed

  906. This towards us

  907. We saw it

  908. In the last time

  909. We were looking at it

  910. How He redeems

  911. Our life

  912. How He

  913. All these benefits

  914. He forgives

  915. In our iniquities

  916. He heals our diseases

  917. We can't do it

  918. Ourselves

  919. But yet we are

  920. Precious

  921. To Him

  922. He crowns you

  923. With steadfast love

  924. And mercy

  925. It says in verse 4

  926. And we see this again

  927. In verse 6 and 7

  928. How He acts

  929. In His steadfast love

  930. And mercy

  931. Towards us

  932. We hear the wind

  933. This evening

  934. Going up again

  935. And bad forecast

  936. Again overnight

  937. We see storms

  938. Coming

  939. And so often

  940. Storms bring damage

  941. With them

  942. A few years ago

  943. During one storm

  944. That came our way

  945. There was a barge

  946. It was a salmon feed barge

  947. That was moored

  948. And it broke

  949. Its mooring

  950. I can't remember

  951. Exactly where it was

  952. But it ended up

  953. Drifting in the minch

  954. And it ended up

  955. Being sunk

  956. Because it had drifted

  957. It had been damaged

  958. It went on the rocks

  959. It wasn't old

  960. It had just been

  961. Fairly newly built

  962. Cost a million pounds

  963. But after I'd been

  964. Raked

  965. On the rocks

  966. The question was being asked

  967. Is it worth salvaging?

  968. Is it worth doing anything

  969. To try and

  970. Get it back?

  971. Something that cost

  972. A million pounds

  973. You're thinking

  974. Surely

  975. There's got to be

  976. Some benefit

  977. In getting it back

  978. Something can be done

  979. But even the question

  980. Being asked

  981. Is it worth it?

  982. And you think to God

  983. Well

  984. The way God acts

  985. The way God works

  986. Does he act in that way?

  987. Does he look on us

  988. And say

  989. Is it worth

  990. Saving these people?

  991. Is it worth

  992. The difficulty?

  993. Is it worth

  994. The hassle?

  995. Is it worth

  996. That what he says

  997. Yes

  998. We know that God

  999. Didn't count up a cost

  1000. For our salvation

  1001. And say

  1002. I'm not sure

  1003. Is it worth it?

  1004. Because as we see

1005. The words that are used here

  1006. Who redeems your life

  1007. From the pit?

  1008. He's saying

  1009. It is worth it

1010. My action is worth it

  1011. He took action

1012. He acted on our behalf

  1013. Because what was impossible

  1014. For us

  1015. He did

1016. He did in his son

  1017. Christ Jesus

  1018. He acted

  1019. For us

1020. So we have the benefit

  1021. There

  1022. Of God's action

  1023. And God's

  1024. Word

  1025. To us

  1026. As we read

  1027. In John 1

1028. We read of the word

  1029. Who became flesh

  1030. And dwelt among us

  1031. And we have seen

  1032. His glory

1033. Glory of the only son

  1034. From the father

  1035. Full of grace

  1036. And truth

  1037. The Lord

  1038. Has acted

  1039. And the Lord

  1040. Has spoken

  1041. And so he continues

  1042. To give us

  1043. This benefit

  1044. He communicates

  1045. To us

  1046. He speaks

  1047. To us

  1048. He acts

  1049. For us

  1050. The second benefit

  1051. We see here

  1052. Is he is

  1053. Merciful

  1054. And kind

  1055. He is

  1056. Merciful

  1057. And kind

  1058. The Lord

  1059. Is merciful

  1060. And gracious

  1061. Slow to anger

  1062. And abounding

  1063. In steadfast

  1064. Love

  1065. Patience

  1066. It's something

  1067. That we don't

  1068. Always have

  1069. Again you think of

1070. Do I have to do

  1071. Everything myself?

  1072. You're asking that

  1073. Out of impatience

  1074. Have you ever had

  1075. Your patience

  1076. Tested?

  1077. It's not so much

1078. A question to ask us

  1079. How many times

  1080. Have you had

  1081. Your patience

  1082. Tested?

1083. I'm sure we could say

  1084. Many times

  1085. And we've tested

  1086. People's patience

  1087. Ourselves

  1088. Many times

  1089. But have you ever

  1090. Asked yourself

  1091. I wonder

  1092. Have I tested

  1093. God's patience?

  1094. Are my actions

  1095. Are what I'm doing

  1096. The way I'm living

  1097. Is it testing

  1098. God's patience?

  1099. Patience

  1100. The question again

  1101. Should be

  1102. Have I tested

  1103. It shouldn't be

  1104. Have I tested

  1105. God's patience

  1106. But how many times

  1107. Have I tested

  1108. God's patience?

  1109. You see it with

  1110. The children of Israel

  1111. In the Exodus

  1112. Testing God's patience

  1113. Again and again

  1114. With the way that

  1115. They were treating him

  1116. The way that

  1117. They were acting

1118. No matter what he did

  1119. For them

  1120. They seemed to just

  1121. Do their own thing

  1122. And we're the same

1123. I just have to look

  1124. At my own life

  1125. And examine

  1126. How many times

  1127. Have I grumbled

  1128. Or complained to God

  1129. How many times

  1130. Have I said

  1131. God

  1132. You don't know

  1133. What you're doing

1134. I'll do it my way

1135. We do it all the time

  1136. We're testing his patience

1137. And yet here we read

1138. The benefit that we have

  1139. That he doesn't act

  1140. As he should

  1141. Towards us

  1142. Or that he could

  1143. Towards us

  1144. The Lord is merciful

  1145. And gracious

  1146. Slow to anger

  1147. And abounding

  1148. In steadfast love

  1149. How do you know

  1150. When someone's angry

  1151. Against you?

  1152. If it's getting serious

  1153. If it's getting to a point

  1154. Of rage

  1155. Quite often

  1156. It's the nostrils

  1157. That give it away

  1158. They start flaring

  1159. There's a real anger

  1160. And we're not here

  1161. Talking just

  1162. In a bad mood

  1163. With someone

  1164. We're not talking about

1165. I'm not talking to you

  1166. At the moment

  1167. We're talking

1168. A serious kind of anger

  1169. That the Lord

  1170. Restrains from

  1171. Because you see

1172. The words that are used there

  1173. The Lord is

  1174. Merciful and gracious

  1175. And especially

  1176. The Lord is slow

  1177. To anger

  1178. The literal translation

  1179. Of slow

  1180. To anger

  1181. There is

  1182. His nostrils

  1183. Don't flare

  1184. In anger

  1185. That's the literal

  1186. Translation

  1187. It doesn't

  1188. Go to the point

  1189. Where his nostrils

  1190. Flare

  1191. Because if it did

  1192. We could never stand

  1193. We could never stand

  1194. Against God's anger

  1195. And God's wrath

  1196. We could never

  1197. Stand

  1198. Psalm 130

  1199. Speaks of that

  1200. Who could stand?

  1201. Who could stand

  1202. Before you Lord?

  1203. We couldn't

  1204. But the benefit

  1205. That we see here

  1206. Is he is merciful

  1207. He is gracious

  1208. He is slow

  1209. To anger

  1210. And abounding

  1211. In steadfast love

  1212. His ways

  1213. Are not our ways

  1214. His thoughts

  1215. Are not our thoughts

  1216. He doesn't act

  1217. Like we do

  1218. He has a greater

  1219. Patience

  1220. Than we do

  1221. The Lord

  1222. In other words

  1223. God's mercy

  1224. It's relentless

  1225. It's unending

  1226. He wants his people

  1227. To be saved

  1228. That is his longing

  1229. That is his desire

1230. Because a day is coming

  1231. When that wrath

  1232. Will come

  1233. But in his mercy

  1234. Just now

  1235. He is gracious

  1236. And slow

  1237. To anger

1238. It is not never ending

1239. Because there is a warning

  1240. There is a warning

1241. There for us as well

  1242. It will not always

  1243. Be so

  1244. He will not leave

  1245. The guilty unpunished

  1246. He will bring justice

  1247. As it says

  1248. To the oppressed

  1249. But he will bring

  1250. Judgment upon

  1251. All who reject

  1252. And all who

  1253. Put him away

  1254. All who ignore him

  1255. You ignore him

  1256. At your peril

  1257. But today

  1258. We live

  1259. In a day

  1260. Of his mercy

  1261. He is slow

  1262. To anger

1263. And so it is a day

  1264. To respond

1265. This is one of the

  1266. Great benefits

  1267. For you

  1268. If you are not

  1269. Believing this evening

  1270. That he is patient

  1271. That he is slow

  1272. To anger

1273. But it is a warning

  1274. It is a warning

  1275. Of the serious nature

  1276. Of who God is

  1277. That he will

1278. On the day of judgment

  1279. Pour out

  1280. That anger

  1281. And we cannot stand

  1282. Then

  1283. The Lord is merciful

  1284. And gracious

  1285. Slow to anger

  1286. And abounding

  1287. In steadfast love

  1288. But he will not

  1289. Always

  1290. Chide

  1291. Nor will he

  1292. Keep his anger

  1293. Forever

  1294. We also see

  1295. It is closely

  1296. Linked to this

  1297. As well

  1298. His gracious

  1299. Nature

  1300. As well

  1301. We mentioned

  1302. The word

  1303. Gracious

  1304. There

  1305. But it goes on

  1306. In this psalm

  1307. As well

  1308. In verse 10

  1309. He does not

  1310. Deal with us

  1311. According to our sins

  1312. Nor repay us

  1313. According to our

  1314. Iniquities

  1315. As we come in

  1316. To worship

  1317. God

  1318. As we come

  1319. We realise

  1320. Our sin

  1321. We realise

  1322. Our sins

  1323. That are many

  1324. And worse

  1325. Than we want

  1326. To believe

  1327. And it sounds

  1328. A strange benefit

  1329. That that's one of

  1330. The benefits

  1331. We have

  1332. When we come

  1333. In to worship

  1334. God

  1335. But God shows us

  1336. As we are

  1337. He is merciful

  1338. He is gracious

  1339. He is slow

  1340. To anger

1341. But when he shows us

  1342. Our sin

  1343. It's in a benefit

  1344. Way as well

  1345. Because it helps us

  1346. To understand

  1347. That in our sins

  1348. That are many

  1349. His mercy is more

  1350. As the hymn says

  1351. We realise

  1352. How much

  1353. We have

  1354. Fallen short

  1355. Of his glory

  1356. We realise

  1357. How far away

  1358. We are

  1359. From where we

  1360. Should be

  1361. As we come in

  1362. To worship

  1363. A holy God

  1364. As we come

  1365. Before his word

  1366. We realise

  1367. He does not

  1368. Deal with us

  1369. According to our sins

  1370. Nor repay us

  1371. According to our

  1372. Iniquities

  1373. What's he talking about?

1374. Are we not good people?

  1375. No

  1376. We're not

  1377. But he is

  1378. Gracious

  1379. He is gracious

  1380. And we should

  1381. Never lose sight

  1382. Of that

  1383. The great cost

  1384. Involved for our sins

  1385. To be forgiven

  1386. The great cost

1387. If he was to deal

  1388. With us

  1389. According to our sins

  1390. We would be lost

1391. But what did he do

1392. To deal with our sins?

  1393. He sent Christ

  1394. He sent Christ

  1395. That he would take

  1396. Our sins

  1397. For us

  1398. Because we couldn't

  1399. Do it ourselves

  1400. We see there

  1401. His action

  1402. Towards his people

  1403. That he might

  1404. Save them

  1405. From their sins

  1406. He sent his son

  1407. Martin Luther

  1408. Described it

  1409. In this way

  1410. He said

1411. Although out of pure grace

  1412. God does not

  1413. Impute our sins

  1414. To us

  1415. He nonetheless

  1416. Did not want

  1417. To do this

  1418. Until complete

  1419. And ample

  1420. Satisfaction

  1421. Of his law

  1422. And his righteousness

  1423. Had been made

  1424. Since this

  1425. Was impossible

  1426. For us

  1427. God ordained

  1428. For us

  1429. In our place

  1430. One

  1431. Who took upon himself

  1432. All the punishment

  1433. We deserve

  1434. He fulfilled

  1435. The law

  1436. For us

  1437. He averted

  1438. The judgment

  1439. Of God

  1440. From us

  1441. And appeased

  1442. God's wrath

  1443. Grace

  1444. Therefore

  1445. Cost us

  1446. Nothing

  1447. But it cost

  1448. Another much

  1449. To get it

  1450. For us

  1451. Grace

  1452. Was purchased

  1453. With an incalculable

  1454. Infinite

  1455. Treasure

  1456. The son

  1457. Of God

  1458. Himself

  1459. The wonder

  1460. Of God's

  1461. Grace

  1462. So as we read

  1463. Here in verse 10

  1464. He does not

  1465. Deal with us

  1466. According

  1467. To our sins

  1468. That is

  1469. The wonder

  1470. Of his grace

  1471. Now when you think

  1472. Of that grace

  1473. It's not just

  1474. For a moment

  1475. When you think

  1476. Of the hymn

  1477. Amazing Grace

1478. You think of the author

  1479. Who wrote it

  1480. John Newton

  1481. And the wonder

  1482. Of that grace

  1483. That saved him

  1484. That grace

  1485. That saved

  1486. A wretch

  1487. Like me

  1488. But he's not just

  1489. Talking about

  1490. A moment's grace

  1491. Because he goes on

  1492. To express it

  1493. In that way

  1494. It's much more

  1495. Than just about

  1496. The grace

  1497. Of conversion

  1498. Because he says

  1499. Through many dangers

  1500. Toils

  1501. And snares

  1502. We have already

  1503. Come

  1504. It's this

  1505. Ongoing grace

  1506. It was grace

  1507. That brought us

  1508. Safe thus far

  1509. And grace

  1510. Will lead us

  1511. Home

  1512. So it's not just

  1513. Grace

  1514. For a moment

  1515. But grace

  1516. That keeps us

  1517. Day by day

  1518. Grace

  1519. That will see us

  1520. Home

  1521. Is that not

  1522. A wonderful benefit

  1523. Is that not

  1524. Something that we

  1525. Should be so

  1526. Thankful to God

  1527. For

  1528. That as we

  1529. Believe in him

  1530. We have that grace

1531. Not just for a moment

  1532. But for every moment

  1533. Of every day

  1534. And the grace

  1535. That will sustain us

  1536. And see us

  1537. Home

  1538. Give thanks to God

1539. If you know this grace

  1540. And if you don't

  1541. Pray

  1542. Pray to know

  1543. That wonder

  1544. Amazing grace

1545. That is able to save

  1546. Saved a wretch

  1547. Like me

  1548. Not just John Newton

  1549. Would say that

  1550. Any sinner

  1551. Could say that

  1552. We are saved

  1553. As wretches

  1554. By the grace

  1555. Of God

  1556. He is gracious

  1557. The fourth

  1558. And final

  1559. Benefit

  1560. We see here

  1561. He is compassionate

  1562. He is compassionate

  1563. When you look at

  1564. Verse

  1565. 11

  1566. Through to

  1567. Verse 13

1568. For as high as the heavens

  1569. Are above the earth

  1570. So great

  1571. Is his steadfast love

  1572. Towards those

  1573. Who fear him

  1574. As far as east

  1575. Is from the west

  1576. So far does he

  1577. Remove our

  1578. Transgressions

  1579. From us

  1580. Then you have

  1581. These words

  1582. In verse

  1583. As a father

  1584. Shows compassion

  1585. To his children

  1586. So the Lord

  1587. Shows compassion

  1588. To those

  1589. Who fear him

  1590. The benefit

  1591. Of a compassionate

  1592. God

  1593. He doesn't deal

  1594. With our sins

  1595. According

  1596. To our sins

  1597. But instead

  1598. As far as

  1599. East is from

  1600. The west

  1601. He has removed

  1602. Our transgressions

  1603. From us

  1604. Why

  1605. Because he has

  1606. This relationship

  1607. Of compassion

  1608. As a father

  1609. To his children

  1610. We have

  1611. We have this

  1612. Great benefit

  1613. Of being

  1614. In the family

  1615. Of God

  1616. We read it

  1617. Throughout the scriptures

  1618. We read it

  1619. In

  1620. John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  1621. Of how we are

  1622. Children of God

  1623. He describes

  1624. In the letter

  1625. Of 1st John

  1626. We see it there

  1627. In chapter 3

  1628. As well

1629. See what kind of love

  1630. The father has given

  1631. To us

1632. That we should be called

  1633. Children of God

  1634. And so we are

  1635. The reason why

  1636. The world does not

  1637. Know us is that

  1638. It did not

  1639. Know him

  1640. Beloved

  1641. We are God's

  1642. Children

  1643. Now

  1644. There is this

  1645. Relationship

  1646. That we have

  1647. Through faith

  1648. In Christ

  1649. We are God's

  1650. Children

  1651. And there are

  1652. Benefits in us

  1653. In us

  1654. For us

  1655. In that

  1656. We know God

  1657. As our father

  1658. As far as

  1659. East is from

  1660. The west

  1661. He has removed

  1662. Our transgressions

  1663. Why as a father

  1664. Shows

  1665. Compassion

  1666. To his children

  1667. And what a benefit

  1668. We have

  1669. To know him

  1670. As our father

  1671. We all have

  1672. Different experiences

  1673. In life

  1674. Of when we were

  1675. Children

  1676. And I remember

  1677. Growing up

  1678. Myself

  1679. When I was young

  1680. If I did

  1681. Something wrong

  1682. The first instinct

  1683. Was to try and

  1684. Hide that wrong

  1685. From my parents

  1686. I don't know

  1687. How much

  1688. Super glue

  1689. I went through

  1690. Trying to hide

  1691. My faults

  1692. From my parents

  1693. Because it would

  1694. So often happen

  1695. If I was playing

  1696. With my sister

  1697. It seemed to be

  1698. That something

  1699. Would bounce off me

  1700. And I would

  1701. Kick something

  1702. And would always

  1703. Knock over

  1704. An ornament

  1705. And you were

  1706. There trying to

  1707. Glue it back

  1708. Together before

  1709. They would see

  1710. It was

  1711. Far too obvious

  1712. When they came

  1713. Home that

  1714. Something was

  1715. Wrong

  1716. We cannot

  1717. Hide it

  1718. But it's

  1719. Our natural

  1720. Instinct

  1721. To try and

  1722. Hide it

  1723. From our

  1724. Parents

  1725. And we see

  1726. It's an instinct

  1727. That is in man

  1728. From the very

  1729. Beginning

  1730. Because as soon

  1731. As Adam and Eve

  1732. Had done wrong

  1733. In the garden

  1734. Their first instinct

  1735. Was to hide

  1736. To hide away

  1737. It's just

  1738. In us

  1739. And yet

  1740. When we see

  1741. A compassionate

  1742. Father here

  1743. We see

  1744. He's not out

  1745. Just to punish

  1746. Us

  1747. He's out

  1748. To heal us

  1749. To restore

  1750. Us

  1751. In right

  1752. Relationship

  1753. With him

  1754. As a father

  1755. Shows compassion

  1756. To his children

  1757. So the Lord

  1758. Shows compassion

  1759. To those

  1760. Who fear him

  1761. That when

  1762. There's a right

  1763. Fear

  1764. When there's a

  1765. Right fear

  1766. It is

  1767. Knowing that

  1768. We have

  1769. Let someone

  1770. Down

  1771. That we have

  1772. Failed someone

  1773. And we're afraid

  1774. Of those

  1775. Consequences

  1776. But the Lord

  1777. Shows us

  1778. This compassion

  1779. Shows us

  1780. This steadfast

  1781. Love

  1782. Compassion

  1783. Towards those

  1784. Who fear him

  1785. In the great

  1786. Distances

  1787. That we see

  1788. Mentioned here

  1789. As high as the

  1790. Heavens are above

  1791. The earth

  1792. So great

  1793. Is this steadfast

  1794. Love towards

  1795. Those who fear him

  1796. And then we see

  1797. It was sin

  1798. As far as east

  1799. Is from the west

  1800. So far as he

  1801. Removed our

  1802. Transgressions

  1803. From us

  1804. There's love

  1805. And there's

  1806. Transgressions

  1807. And there's

  1808. This great

  1809. Distance

  1810. But there are

  1811. So many

  1812. Verses that

  1813. Remind us

  1814. That God

  1815. Is gathering

  1816. His people

  1817. From a distance

  1818. And one of

  1819. Them is in

  1820. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 30:3

  1821. 30 verse 3

  1822. And it really

  1823. Speaks about

  1824. This relationship

  1825. Of the father

  1826. Towards his

  1827. Children

  1828. Showing compassion

  1829. And it says

  1830. Then the Lord

  1831. Your God

  1832. Will restore

  1833. Your fortunes

  1834. And have

  1835. Compassion on

  1836. You

  1837. And he will

  1838. Gather you again

  1839. From all the

  1840. Peoples

  1841. Where the Lord

  1842. Your God

  1843. Has scattered

  1844. You

  1845. He is bringing

  1846. His people

  1847. In

  1848. He is bringing

  1849. His children

  1850. In

  1851. He is bringing

  1852. His children

  1853. Home

  1854. It's like the

  1855. Parable of the

  1856. Prodigal son

  1857. That speaks of

  1858. That compassion

  1859. Of the father

  1860. Who saw his son

  1861. Coming back

  1862. From a distance

  1863. And he ran

  1864. Towards him

  1865. He showed him

  1866. Not what he

  1867. Deserved

  1868. But he showed

  1869. Him mercy

  1870. He showed him

  1871. His steadfast

  1872. Love

  1873. He showed his

  1874. Compassion

  1875. And God

  1876. Has that

  1877. Compassion

  1878. Still

  1879. Towards those

  1880. Who fear him

  1881. And it's

  1882. Always in the

  1883. Midst of

  1884. Everything

  1885. Going right

  1886. We are so

  1887. Often taught

  1888. The compassion

  1889. Of God

  1890. When things

  1891. Are not going

  1892. Our way

  1893. The way that

  1894. We would want

  1895. Them to go

  1896. And in great

  1897. Difficulty

  1898. Sometimes

  1899. We see the

  1900. Steadfast love

  1901. Of God

  1902. That is

  1903. Unchanging

  1904. There was a

  1905. Missionary called

  1906. Alan Gardner

  1907. And he

  1908. Spent many

  1909. Of his

  1910. Years

  1911. As a

  1912. Missionary

  1913. To different

  1914. Parts of

  1915. South America

  1916. And he

  1917. Suffered

  1918. Many

  1919. Troubles

  1920. During his

  1921. Years as a

  1922. Missionary

  1923. And ultimately

  1924. During his

  1925. Mission

  1926. He lost

  1927. His life

  1928. In 1851

  1929. At the age

  1930. Of 57

  1931. He died

  1932. Of starvation

  1933. And disease

  1934. Having become

  1935. Drifted away

  1936. From where

  1937. He'd been

  1938. Staying

  1939. And ministering

  1940. In

  1941. He was

  1942. Abandoned

  1943. In a

  1944. Shipwreck

  1945. Almost

  1946. And he

  1947. Was left

  1948. By himself

  1949. He starved

  1950. To death

  1951. And it

  1952. Wasn't a

  1953. Quick death

  1954. It was

  1955. Something he

  1956. Suffered a

  1957. Lot in

  1958. And it

  1959. Took time

  1960. But he

  1961. Had kept

  1962. A journal

  1963. Even in

  1964. Those latter

  1965. Days

  1966. A journal

  1967. That you

  1968. Can still

  1969. See to

  1970. This

  1971. Day

  1972. And in

  1973. It he

  1974. Was writing

  1975. Down his

  1976. Own thoughts

  1977. And quotes

  1978. From the

  1979. Psalms

  1980. And different

  1981. Things

  1982. One point

  1983. He wrote

  1984. Down the

  1985. Verse

  1986. From

  1987. Psalm 34

    Psalms 34:10

  1988. Verse 10

  1989. The young

  1990. Lions

  1991. Do lack

  1992. And suffer

  1993. Hunger

  1994. But they

  1995. That seek

  1996. The Lord

  1997. Shall not

  1998. Lack

  1999. Any good

  2000. Thing

  2001. In the

  2002. Midst of

  2003. His

  2004. Starving

  2005. He was able

  2006. To write

  2007. These words

  2008. Although

  2009. We're hungry

  2010. Those who

  2011. Trust the

  2012. Lord

  2013. Those who

  2014. Seek the

  2015. Lord

  2016. Shall not

  2017. Lack

  2018. Anything

  2019. Good

  2020. What a

  2021. Testimony

  2022. And the

  2023. Last words

  2024. That he

  2025. Wrote

  2026. Before he

  2027. Passed away

  2028. That they

  2029. Found in

  2030. His diary

  2031. Was I

  2032. Am

  2033. Overwhelmed

  2034. With a

  2035. Sense of

  2036. The

  2037. Goodness

  2038. Of God

  2039. The

  2040. Compassion

  2041. Of God

  2042. That in

  2043. The midst

  2044. Of such

  2045. Difficulty

  2046. And trials

  2047. And sorrow

  2048. Knowing his

  2049. Life was

  2050. Coming to

  2051. An end

  2052. He was

  2053. Overwhelmed

  2054. With a

  2055. Sense

  2056. Of the

  2057. Goodness

  2058. Of God

  2059. What a

  2060. Benefit

  2061. We have

  2062. In knowing

  2063. Christ

  2064. What benefits

  2065. Are ours

  2066. Through faith

  2067. In him

  2068. We have

  2069. So many

  2070. We could

  2071. Unpack so

  2072. Many more

  2073. Even in

  2074. These few

  2075. Verses

  2076. We'll come

  2077. Back to the

  2078. Last few

  2079. Verses

  2080. Another time

  2081. But the

  2082. More that you

  2083. Look at this

  2084. Psalm

  2085. The more

  2086. You look at

  2087. The word

  2088. Of God

  2089. You realise

  2090. The benefits

  2091. That are ours

  2092. In Christ

  2093. The benefits

  2094. That we have

  2095. Through faith

  2096. May we

  2097. Long for

  2098. Them more

  2099. May we

  2100. Thank God

  2101. For them

  2102. More

  2103. That he

  2104. Doesn't act

  2105. Towards us

  2106. As we

  2107. Deserve

  2108. But that he

  2109. Is merciful

  2110. Gracious

  2111. Slow to

  2112. Anger

  2113. All of

  2114. These things

  2115. That we

  2116. Might find

  2117. Hope

  2118. In him

  2119. Let us

  2120. Pray

  2121. Our

  2122. Father in

  2123. Heaven

  2124. We do

  2125. Thank you

  2126. For all

  2127. Your

  2128. Gracious

  2129. Benefits

  2130. Towards us

  2131. They are

  2132. More than

  2133. We can

  2134. Number

  2135. And the

  2136. More that

  2137. We see

  2138. The more

  2139. That we

  2140. Seek to

  2141. Understand

  2142. How

  2143. Little we

  2144. Know of

  2145. Them

  2146. And yet

  2147. The wonder

  2148. Of them

  2149. Lord

  2150. We thank

  2151. You for

  2152. Your

  2153. Grace

  2154. Your

  2155. Mercy

  2156. Your

  2157. Slow to

  2158. Anger

  2159. All of

  2160. These

  2161. Things

  2162. You do

  2163. Not

  2164. Deal with

  2165. Us

  2166. As we

  2167. Deserve

  2168. We

  2169. Thank

  2170. You

  2171. For

  2172. That

  2173. And we

  2174. Pray to

  2175. Know

  2176. Your

  2177. Grace

  2178. More and

  2179. More

  2180. Lord

  2181. Pardon

  2182. Our

  2183. Sins

  2184. Pardon

  2185. Our

  2186. Forgetfulness

  2187. Of

  2188. You

  2189. And all

  2190. Of

  2191. These

  2192. Things

  2193. As we

  2194. Ask it

  2195. In

  2196. Jesus

  2197. Name

  2198. Amen

  2199. Amen

  2200. We'll

  2201. Bring our

  2202. Worship

  2203. To

  2204. Our

  2205. Close

  2206. By

  2207. Singing

  2208. In

  2209. Psalm

  2210. 32

  2211. In

  2212. The

  2213. Scottish

  2214. Psalter

  2215. Page

  2216. 244

  2217. Psalm

  2218. 32

  2219. We'll

  2220. Sing

  2221. From

  2222. Verse

  2223. 6

  2224. To

  2225. Verse

  2226. 8

  2227. For

  2228. !

  2229. For

  2230. This

  2231. Shall

  2232. Every

  2233. Godly

  2234. One

  2235. His

  2236. Prayer

  2237. Make

  2238. To

  2239. Thee

  2240. In

  2241. Such

  2242. A

  2243. Time

  2244. He

  2245. Shall

  2246. Thee

  2247. Seek

  2248. As

  2249. Found

  2250. Thou

  2251. Mayest

  2252. Be

  2253. As

  2254. Found

  2255. Thou

  2256. Mayest

  2257. Be

  2258. As

  2259. Found

  2260. Thou

  2261. Mayest

  2262. Be

  2263. In

  2264. Such

  2265. A

  2266. Time

  2267. He

  2268. Shall

  2269. Thee

  2270. Seek

  2271. As

  2272. Found

  2273. Thou

  2274. Mayest

  2275. Be

  2276. Surely

  2277. When

  2278. Floods

  2279. Of

  2280. Waters

  2281. Great

  2282. Do

  2283. Swell

  2284. Up

  2285. To

  2286. The

  2287. Prim

  2288. They

  2289. Shall

  2290. Not

  2291. Overwhelm

  2292. His

  2293. Soul

  2294. Nor

  2295. Once

  2296. Come

  2297. Near

  2298. To

  2299. Him

  2300. Nor

  2301. Once

  2302. Come

  2303. Near

  2304. To

  2305. Him

  2306. They

  2307. Shall

  2308. Not

  2309. Overwhelm

  2310. His

  2311. Soul

  2312. Nor

  2313. Once

  2314. Come

  2315. Near

  2316. To

  2317. Him

  2318. Thou

  2319. Art

  2320. My

  2321. Hiding

  2322. Place

  2323. Thou

  2324. Shalt

  2325. From

  2326. Trouble

  2327. Keep

  2328. Me

  2329. Free

  2330. Thou

  2331. With

  2332. Songs

  2333. Of

  2334. Deliberance

  2335. About

  2336. Shall

  2337. Come

  2338. Pass

  2339. Me

  2340. About

  2341. Shall

  2342. Come

  2343. Pass

  2344. Me

  2345. About

  2367. The

  2368. Way

  2369. That

  2370. Thou

  2371. Shall

  2372. Go

  2373. And

  2374. With

  2375. Mine

  2376. Eye

  2377. Upon

  2378. The

2406. We'll close with the benediction.

2407. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore.

  2408. ! Amen.

  2409. Thank you.

  2410. Thank you.
