  18. Let them with sin will and with heart.

  19. Let them with sin will and with heart.

  20. Almighty and most gracious God.

  21. We rejoice in you and in the worship of your name.

  22. You have called us anew on this morning to draw near to you to hear what you have to say to us.

  23. We worship you as the God who is our Father in heaven.

  24. The God who has a family here on earth.

  25. And we rejoice in heaven.

  26. Father in heaven who looks down upon us as we worship you together this morning.

  27. Your word tells us that you are the God who in building a family for yourself.

  28. God who gave you our son to be our Savior.

  29. And we give thanks to you today for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  30. And we pray that as we worship you we may come to you in his name.

  31. As we worship you may he be at the center of all that we say and all that we hear.

  32. Lord Jesus Christ.

  33. And may you be pleased O Lord God to shine upon us.

  34. And come and be present with us.

  35. That we may truly hear what you have to say to us.

  36. Your word tells us that you speak peace to those who are your people.

  37. And we pray today that you will bless us all in our hearts.

  38. That we may indeed be your people.

  39. And that we may indeed know your blessing.

  40. We do give thanks to you for the families that are part of the family of God here.

  41. Even in our own congregation.

  42. We give thanks to you for parents and for children.

  43. We give thanks to you for their desire to hear what you have to say to them.

  44. And we pray that you will bless them here today with their young hearts and lives.

  45. May the children know your hand upon them.

  46. Your blessing in their hearts.

  47. The light of your word.

  48. Helping them every day to live their lives.

  49. Remembering what you have said to them.

  50. And bringing them to faith in your son as their saviour.

  51. And we pray that you will bless every aspect of the teaching that is brought before them.

  52. Even today in all of the different classes.

  53. May they know your voice speaking to them.

  54. And may you bless their young hearts.

  55. We do ask your thanks to you for those who teach them.

  56. And we pray that you will bless and guide them.

  57. And may they learn as they teach.

  58. And may they teach what they have learned.

  59. And may those who they teach benefit from those who teach them.

  60. As those who walk with you.

  61. And to bring to them the good news of the gospel.

  62. We pray for your blessing to be upon parents as well.

  63. That you will continue to guide and uphold them.

  64. And raising up families.

  65. And that you will bless them not only on the Lord's Day.

  66. But also on the weekday.

  67. In school life.

  68. And in every area of family life.

  69. May you bless them together.

  70. And enrich their lives to the glory of your name.

  71. For their benefit and blessing day by day.

  72. And for their hope of everlasting life.

  73. That they may have that hope of the gospel in their hearts.

  74. So bless them and bless us as we continue before you.

  75. Blessing your word to us.

  76. And guiding us in hearing.

  77. And singing.

  78. And praying.

  79. And reading your word.

  80. May you draw near to us.

  81. And speak clearly to us.

  82. O Lord our God.

  83. We do pray.

  84. Hear us.

  85. And our mercy upon us.

  86. We pray these things for Jesus' sake.

  87. Amen.

  88. Amen.

  89. Well boys and girls.

  90. It's good to see you again at church today.

  91. And it's such an encouragement to see you coming to hear what God has to say to us.

  92. And I think the worship of God is the most important thing that you can do the whole of the week.

  93. So it's great to have you here.

  94. Our Bible story today comes from the Gospel of Matthew.

  95. Which is the first gospel in the New Testament.

  96. And it's about God building a church for himself.

  97. And it's about asking people who do they think Jesus is.

  98. And I want you to think about that.

  99. And I want to say three things to you.

  100. And the three things begin with P.

  101. And the first is project.

  102. There is a building project going on.

  103. And God has promised that he will build a church for himself.

  104. And Jesus in the Bible today promises that on this rock he will build the church.

  105. He will build that church on the rock which he is himself.

  106. And as we come to him and believe in his name.

  107. We become part of that building project that God is building.

  108. And that God is working every day of life.

  109. And so as we do worship God today.

  110. We want to remember that this is God's project.

  111. And that by believing in Jesus.

  112. And not by the things that we do.

  113. By believing in Jesus that we become part of this great project of God.

  114. And the second thing is that there is a promise.

  115. And the promise is to you and to all of us.

  116. Depending on what we do with what Jesus says to us.

  117. And Jesus tells us in that great long sermon.

  118. Perhaps a lot longer than the sermons that we're used to in Matthew chapter 5 to chapter 7.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  119. It's a long sermon.

  120. And at the end of that sermon he says to those who are listening to him.

  121. That those who hear his words and do what Jesus says to them.

  122. That they will be like a wise person who builds a house on a rock.

  123. And today that's what God wants you to do.

  124. And he gives you that promise.

  125. That if you hear what he says.

  126. And if you do what he tells you to do.

  127. Then you will be like that wise person who builds a house on a rock.

  128. And Jesus tells him that when the storm comes.

  129. The house that is built on a rock will always stand.

  130. And that's the promise of Jesus to you.

  131. If you believe in his name.

  132. Because he also mentions those who hear his words.

  133. And do not do them.

  134. And they are the foolish people who build a house on the sand.

  135. And we know what happens when the tide comes in.

  136. And when the winds blow and the seas roar.

  137. The house that's built on the sand will fall.

  138. So today there is a promise to you and to all of us.

  139. If you hear.

  140. If you believe.

  141. And if you do.

  142. Then you will build a house for yourself.

  143. You will be safe in life.

  144. As those who believe in Jesus.

  145. And the third thing is.

  146. That there is a problem.

  147. Because if we don't start well.

  148. Then we cannot finish well.

  149. And we visited Italy.

  150. Two or three years back.

  151. And we visited the Tower of Pisa.

  152. It's one of the four towers.

  153. At a cathedral complex.

  154. In Tuscany.

  155. On the northwest coast of Italy.

  156. And it's known as the Leaning Tower.

  157. It was built in the 12th century.

  158. And halfway through the building project.

  159. The tower began to lean over.

  160. It became the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

  161. And it became the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

  162. Because those who planned the job.

  163. And the project.

  164. Those who started building.

  165. Forgot that they needed a foundation under the building.

  166. So they built on soft ground.

  167. And the more they built up.

  168. The more the tower began to lean over.

  169. So it became the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

  170. And today it leans over by four degrees.

  171. Which means at the very.

  172. Between the ground and the top of it.

  173. There's about four meters of a difference.

  174. In the way that the tower is leaning over.

  175. And the lesson from that is.

  176. That unless you and I believe in Jesus.

  177. At the very beginning.

  178. And put our trust in him.

  179. Then no matter what else we do.

  180. Our lives will be just.

  181. Like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

  182. Ready to fall over.

  183. So it's important.

  184. To start by believing in Jesus.

  185. And having that foundation.

  186. For your young lives.

  187. And the other thing to do with.

  188. The Tower of Pisa is.

  189. That they started rebuilding again.

  190. To try and finish it off.

  191. And instead of taking the building down.

  192. And starting with a foundation.

  193. They started making adjustments.

  194. Halfway up the building.

  195. So they tried to straighten it.

  196. In the rest of the project.

  197. So the Leaning Tower became the bending tower.

  198. And actually because of what they did.

  199. At last.

  200. It looked worse than it did.

  201. At the very beginning.

  202. And the lesson from that is.

  203. That although your teachers can help you.

  204. And teach you.

  205. And though your parents can do the same.

  206. Unless you start with believing in Jesus.

  207. No one else can help you to.

  208. Have your life the way Jesus wants you to do.

  209. If you put your trust in Jesus.

  210. And believe in him today.

  211. Then you're starting in the right place.

  212. And your parents can help you.

  213. And your Sunday school teachers can help you.

  214. And you learn the teaching of Jesus.

  215. And your house.

  216. Your life will grow strong in Jesus.

  217. As you put your trust in him.

  218. So remember.

  219. The project.

  220. Jesus is building his church.

  221. Made up of people like you and me.

  222. Remember the promise.

  223. If you hear and do what he says.

  224. Then your house will be safe.

  225. You'll be secure.

  226. Like a house on a rock.

  227. But remember the Tower of Pisa.

  228. Those who started building.

  229. Started wrong.

  230. And because of that.

  231. The building was wrong forever.

  232. Make sure today.

  233. You believe in Jesus.

  234. And then everything else.

  235. Will work out for you.

  236. And God himself.

  237. And Jesus himself.

  238. Will teach you how.

  239. To live your life.

  240. And with trust and prayer.

  241. God will help you to do that.

  242. And that God will bless you.

  243. As we go to your teaching classes.

  244. This morning.

  245. Let's now say the Lord's Prayer together.

  246. Our Father.

  247. Which art in heaven.

  248. Hallowed be thy name.

  249. Thy kingdom come.

  250. Thy will be done on earth.

  251. As it is in heaven.

  252. Give us this day our daily bread.

  253. And forgive us our debts.

  254. As we forgive our debtors.

  255. And lead us not into temptation.

  256. But deliver us from evil.

  257. For thine is the kingdom.

  258. The power and the glory.

  259. For ever.

  260. Amen.

  261. Let's turn now to praise God.

  262. This time from Psalm number 145.

  263. The long meter version of the Psalm.

  264. And at verse number 8.

  265. It's on page 444.

  266. Psalm 145.

  267. The long meter version.

  268. At verse number 8.

  269. And the tune is Warrington.

  270. The Lord our God is gracious.

  271. Compassionate is he also.

  272. In mercy he is plenteous.

  273. But not wrath and anger slow.

  274. Psalm 145.

  275. The long meter version.

  276. From verse 8 to the verse mark 14.

  277. To God's praise.

  278. The Lord our God is gracious.

  280. O man is the Lord, for all His mercy is.

  281. Thy works so great to be afforded.

  282. Thy saints, O Lord, thy name shall bless.

  283. The glory of thy kingdom's show shall thee and love thy power tell.

  284. As soon as I shall shall be its name, O Lord, thy kingdom's grace that God exce.

  285. Life in the man, the name that all, it doth through ages all remain.

  286. The Lord, a fuller, fuller, fuller, fuller, the cast and grace that God exce.

  287. Amen.

  288. Let's turn now to hear the word of God in the New Testament in the Gospel according to Matthew and in chapter 16.

  289. The Gospel of Matthew chapter 16 and beginning a reading at verse number 5.

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  290. Let us hear the word of God.

  291. When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread.

  292. Jesus said to them, watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

  293. And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, we brought no bread.

  294. But Jesus, aware of this, said, O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?

  295. Do you not yet perceive?

  296. Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand and how many baskets you gathered?

  297. Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and how many baskets you gathered?

  298. How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread?

  299. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  300. Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of the bread, but the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  301. Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, who do people say that the Son of Man is?

  302. And they said, some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

  303. He said to them, but who do you say that I am?

  304. Simon Peter replied, you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

  305. And Jesus answered him, blessed are you, Simon bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

  306. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

  307. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

  308. Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

  309. From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

  310. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, far be it from you, Lord, this shall never happen to you.

  311. But he turned and said to Peter, get behind me, Satan, you are a hindrance to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.

  312. Amen, this is the word of God, we trust that he will bless to us our reading from it.

  313. Let's once more bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  314. Our gracious God, rejoice in you and in the way you have breathed out your word that gives us a revelation of the great God that you are.

  315. And we are thankful to you for the way in which you sent your Son to give us that great final revelation of your glory, of your beauty, and of your purposes for this world.

  316. We rejoice today in the oppression of your Son that we read off through the pages of the Gospels.

  317. We are thankful to you for this coming into the world and the marvel and the beauty of it.

  318. We are thankful to you for the life that you lived.

  319. We are thankful to you for his teaching, for his example, for every aspect of his ministry.

  320. We are thankful to you for the death that he died in our place.

  321. We are thankful to you that you brought him back from the dead.

  322. And we are thankful to you that today he is at your right hand.

  323. And so we worship you in his name.

  324. We give thanks to you for him.

  325. And as we do consider your word together, may you help us so that we will understand that we are truly in the presence of the only true and living God.

  326. And every word that you speak to us from your word, may it come into our hearts without authority and without power.

  327. And may we sense your claim upon our hearts and lives.

  328. And may we understand something in the depths of our beings.

  329. That your power brings about a change.

  330. That it begins a great transformation.

  331. That it gives direction to us in this world.

  332. That it gives to us the great prospect of your glory.

  333. And help us, O Lord God, to experience that anew this day.

  334. Perhaps experience it for the first time.

  335. And set our feet in that way.

  336. On the rock which is Christ.

  337. And enable us to live our lives as those who stand secure.

  338. Through faith in his name.

  339. So that when we do face the storms of life.

  340. The pains, the sorrows, the afflictions.

  341. All of the sufferings of life.

  342. That we do come face to face with them.

  343. That we know that we are secure in you.

  344. And secure upon that rock.

  345. And know that no one can pluck us out of your hands.

  346. That you will keep us safe.

  347. Bless every heart before you here today.

  348. Bless every desire after you.

  349. And satisfy every need we do ask.

  350. And give us all to know our satisfaction.

  351. In Jesus Christ, your son.

  352. Bless our congregation, our people.

  353. Be merciful to us we do ask on this day.

  354. May you bless your word to all those who gather with the people of God.

  355. May you bless your word to all those who join online.

  356. May you bless your word to those who are confined in their homes.

  357. Who are isolated and who are sorrowful perhaps in life.

  358. May you give to them the comfort of your presence.

  359. May you come and dwell with them in their isolation.

  360. And fill their hearts and their homes or wherever they might be.

  361. With a sense of the reality and the presence of God.

  362. Encourage them wherever they are before you.

  363. Comfort the grieving we do ask.

  364. We pray that you will bind our broken hearts.

  365. That you will be near to all today.

  366. Who have an empty place in their home and in their hearts and lives.

  367. May you give to them a sense of you standing with them.

  368. Of you being with them as the Lord who is their shepherd.

  369. And in that valley of the shadow of death.

  370. May they fear no evil because you are with them.

  371. May you walk with them and bless them during these days.

  372. Bless our wider island communities.

  373. We pray for the blessing of the gospel of the day.

  374. And of your Holy Spirit to come and to accompany your word.

  375. Make your name great through the ministry of the gospel.

  376. Across this whole land today.

  377. Wherever your word is preached may it be blessed.

  378. May lives be changed.

  379. May towns and cities and communities come to take heed to what you have to say.

  380. And to make you through your word and by your power turn us around to yourself.

  381. That you may fear your name in every area and level of society.

  382. In our royal family.

  383. In our governments.

  384. In our parliaments.

  385. In our local authorities.

  386. Wherever there is authority placed by you.

  387. May the fear of your name be in people's hearts.

  388. And may they guide us as people of this nation.

  389. And of our communities.

  390. Guide us in the ways of God.

  391. Bless the wider world.

  392. We pray for your word to be blessed as it goes forth across the world today.

  393. We remember the parts of the world where there are pains and sorrows.

  394. Where lives have been lost here in this past week.

  395. In tragic circumstances.

  396. We pray for your comforting presence for those who have lost.

  397. And we ask that you will sustain and uphold them.

  398. We pray for the places where there is conflict and strife.

  399. And war.

  400. That you will bring all of these things to an end.

  401. That you will cause your peace to descend.

  402. And cause lasting peace to be achieved.

  403. And may the peace of God indeed dwell in all the nations of the earth.

  404. Even on this day.

  405. As we commit our world to you.

  406. And so we pray that you will hear us.

  407. That you will be merciful to us.

  408. That you will continue to guide us as we wait upon you in this time of worship.

  409. Bless your word as we ask.

  410. And hear our prayer.

  411. For we ask all these things for Jesus' sake.

  412. Amen.

  413. Amen.

  414. We are now going to turn to praise God once more this time.

  415. In Psalm number 118.

  416. In Sing Psalms.

  417. It is on page 156.

  418. And we are singing at verse 15.

  419. Psalm 118 at verse 15.

  420. And the tune is Duke Street.

  421. Triumphant shouts of joy resound.

  422. In places where the righteous dwell.

  423. The Lord's right hand is lifted high.

  424. This mighty hand does all things well.

  425. We stand to sing from verse 15 to the verse 24.

  426. To God's praise.

  427. The Lord's right hand is lifted high.

  428. His mighty hand does all things well.

  429. I shall not die.

  430. I shall not die, but I shall bear.

  433. And give thanks to God.

  434. This is the gate of God through which

  435. The righteous come before the Lord.

  436. You answer me, hallelujah, Christ.

  437. Salvation comes from you alone.

  438. The stone that they've heard have refused

  439. Has now begun the glorious hope.

  440. The Lord himself has done all this.

  441. It is a marvel in our sight.

  442. This is the gate the Lord has made.

  443. In it let us take great delight.

  444. Let's turn back now to the Gospel of Matthew and chapter 16.

  445. And we can read at verse 13.

  446. Matthew 16 at verse 13.

  447. Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi,

  448. He asked His disciples,

  449. Who do people say that the Son of Man is?

  450. And they said,

  451. Some say John the Baptist,

  452. Others say Elijah,

  453. And others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

  454. He said to them,

  455. But who do you say that I am?

  456. Simon Peter replied,

  457. You are the Christ,

  458. The Son of the living God.

  459. And so on.

  460. We know that in every area of life,

  461. Identity is important.

  462. Our own personal identity and the identity of others.

  463. And with that identity to establish the relationships

  464. that help to identify our lives even more clearly.

  465. When Jesus was teaching the people,

  466. He knew exactly who He was.

  467. There was no doubt in His mind that He was the Son of God,

  468. That He was the Son of Man.

  469. There was no doubt in His mind why He was here.

  470. But He wanted others to know and to understand

  471. that this is who He truly was.

  472. He wanted others to understand His identity.

  473. And once they did that,

  474. Then they had a new identity for themselves.

  475. And the identity was based and established on their relationship with Him.

  476. And under the ministry of the gospel today and always,

  477. These are central to the ways in which God wants to speak to us.

  478. Who is He?

  479. Who is Jesus?

  480. Who are you?

  481. Who am I?

  482. And there to firm up on our relationships with God,

  483. Whether they exist or not.

  484. And when you read this gospel,

  485. As we read the other gospels,

  486. We do understand that Jesus has a developing profile.

  487. He is the person who heals diseases.

  488. He is the person who casts out demons.

  489. He is the person who forgives sins.

  490. He has a growing profile, a growing reputation.

  491. And because of that,

  492. Many people are gathering around Him.

  493. He is an attractive person

  494. Because of what He says and what He does.

  495. But Jesus wants to highlight that

  496. Finding Jesus attractive is not enough.

  497. And there are times through the gospels

  498. That there are junctions and crossroads

  499. At which Jesus calls upon the people

  500. To declare their relationship with Him.

  501. And today we want to take that crossroads

  502. And place it in our own hearing.

  503. And understand that today

  504. Jesus and the gospel

  505. Is taking us to one of these crossroads

  506. To help us

  507. Answer questions.

  508. And to help us show who we truly are

  509. And what we really think.

  510. And so from these verses

  511. I want to think of kingdom faith

  512. And kingdom formation.

  513. And I want you to notice first of all

  514. The kingdom faith.

  515. And the kingdom faith

  516. Comes to light

  517. In the challenge

  518. That Jesus gives to His disciples.

  519. A challenge which He first of all

  520. Addresses to those

  521. Who are not the disciples.

  522. Who do the people in general terms

  523. Say the Son of Man is?

  524. There He is.

  525. There is His identity.

  526. He is the Son of Man.

  527. He is that end time figure

  528. Prophesied by Daniel

  529. In Daniel 7

  530. That was going to come

  531. To save and to judge the world.

  532. And Jesus identifies him

  533. With the Son of Man.

  534. And in the build up of His ministry

  535. Up until this point

  536. We see at different stages

  537. That He makes Himself known

  538. As the Son of Man.

  539. We see that in the parables

  540. In chapter 13

  541. The Son of Man

  542. Is the one who sows the seed.

  543. The Son of Man

  544. Is the one who

  545. Sends His angels

  546. To gather out of the kingdom

  547. That which is evil

  548. And the lawbreakers.

  549. He has built up

  550. The sense in His ministry

  551. That He is the Son of Man.

  552. And here He is

  553. Asking the question

  554. With regard to the people

  555. In general

  556. Who do the people say

  557. That the Son of Man is?

  558. And when we hear the response

  559. We come to understand

  560. That their faith

  561. And their following of Jesus

  562. Is entirely superficial.

  563. He's an interesting person.

  564. That's great.

  565. He does amazing things.

  566. That's great.

  567. He is attractive

  568. Because of the way

  569. In which He cares for people.

  570. That's great.

  571. He performs great miracles.

  572. He becomes attractive.

  573. They are interested.

  574. The crowds are following Him.

  575. But who do they really think He is?

  576. And their response is

  577. Some say John the Baptist.

  578. Others say Elijah.

  579. And others Jeremiah

  580. Or one of the prophets.

  581. They recognize

  582. That He's a messenger of God.

  583. They recognize

  584. That He could be

  585. One of these key figures

  586. That John the Baptist

  587. Who has come

  588. And perhaps

  589. Who has raised from the dead.

  590. The Elijah

  591. That Malachi promised

  592. Would come

  593. Before the great

  594. And terrible day

  595. Of the Lord.

  596. The Jeremiah

  597. Who spoke to the people

  598. In their distance

  599. From God

  600. And preached repentance

  601. To them

  602. And asked them

  603. To come back to God.

  604. It could be one of these

  605. Or one of the other prophets

  606. Who foretold

  607. About the kingdom of God.

  608. A general interest

  609. In the oppression of Jesus.

  610. And as God asks you

  611. The same question today

  612. Who do you say

  613. That the Son of Man is?

  614. You are here today

  615. I'm guessing because

  616. Of a level of interest.

  617. Of a level of attraction.

  618. Of a level of commitment

  619. To the teaching of Jesus.

  620. To the claims of Jesus

  621. In life and in worship.

  622. And in every area

  623. In which we live life

  624. In the world.

  625. There's a sense

  626. In which you have

  627. An interest

  628. In the gospel.

  629. An interest in Jesus.

  630. And a joy perhaps

  631. In hearing

  632. The message of Jesus

  633. In the gospel.

  634. But today

  635. Is that as far

  636. As your understanding

  637. Of Jesus goes?

  638. You haven't yet reached

  639. The point at which

  640. Genuine faith

  641. Does come to light.

  642. The moment towards

  643. That sense of attraction

  644. And interest

  645. To reach the point

  646. Of personal relationship

  647. With Jesus.

  648. Who do you say

  649. That Jesus is?

  650. Because genuine disciples

  651. Make a clear confession.

  652. And Jesus turns

  653. To the disciples

  654. And who do you say

  655. That I am?

  656. And instantly

  657. Simon Peter

  658. Replies

  659. You are the Christ

  660. The son

  661. Of the living God.

  662. He recognizes

  663. Who the person is

  664. And he recognizes

  665. Why he is here.

  666. He is the son

  667. Of the living God.

  668. God is working

  669. In the world

  670. He is active

  671. In the world

  672. Through the passion

  673. Of the Lord Jesus.

  674. Jesus is God

  675. With us.

  676. He is the son

  677. Of the living God.

  678. And he is also

  679. The Christ.

  680. That is the

  681. Anointed one.

  682. The son of David.

  683. The God's king

  684. That he had promised

  685. To send.

  686. Who was going to

  687. Sit on God's throne.

  688. Who was going to

  689. Establish peace

  690. Between God

  691. And a lost world.

  692. Who was going to be

  693. A priest who would

  694. Sacrifice himself.

  695. The anointed one

  696. Is the Christ of God.

  697. Genuine faith

  698. Captures both

  699. Of these elements.

  700. And it's not that

  701. Genuine faith

  702. Knows everything.

  703. Because as we

  704. Follow the story

  705. We will see that

  706. Peter later on

  707. Can't understand

  708. Why Jesus must die.

  709. Let that be far

  710. From you.

  711. Genuine faith

  712. Makes a confession

  713. Confession

  714. A confession

  715. That needs to be

  716. Understood more

  717. And more

  718. In learning from

  719. Jesus

  720. But today

  721. The key is

  722. For you and for me

  723. In the response

  724. To this challenge

  725. Is do we truly

  726. Recognize

  727. That Jesus

  728. Is God with us

  729. And that he is

  730. God's Messiah

  731. Whom God has sent

  732. To save us

  733. And that today

  734. He is the anointed one

  735. At God's throne

  736. On God's right hand

  737. And that from there

  738. He reigns the world

  739. And from there

  740. He is working

  741. In the lives

  742. Of his people.

  743. Genuine

  744. Faith

  745. Identity

  746. The key elements

  747. That set him apart

  748. Not just as a

  749. Great teacher

  750. Not just as a

  751. Great carer

  752. A great shepherd

  753. Of people

  754. But as someone

  755. Sent

  756. By God

  757. In God's

  758. Design and plan

  759. To save

  760. People like you

  761. And me

  762. To save

  763. Sinners

  764. The challenge

  765. What is your

  766. Response

  767. And don't

  768. In answering

  769. The question

  770. Today

  771. Don't think

  772. That

  773. The inadequacy

  774. Of your knowledge

  775. Of Jesus

  776. Means that

  777. You can't

  778. Have genuine

  779. Faith

  780. Because

  781. When we come

  782. To faith

  783. In the Lord

  784. Jesus

  785. It's then

  786. We begin

  787. The journey

  788. Of learning

  789. From Jesus

  790. He is our

  791. Teacher

  792. And we become

  793. The pupils

  794. We become

  795. The disciples

  796. We are on

  797. A steep

  798. Learning curve

  799. From the time

  800. That we come

  801. To believe

  802. In the Lord

  803. Jesus

  804. So don't

  805. Let the fact

  806. That you don't

  807. Know everything

  808. About Jesus

  809. Make you decide

  810. That you can't

  811. Have genuine

  812. Faith

  813. The question

  814. Is

  815. Who do you

  816. Think

  817. Jesus is

  818. Do you see

  819. Him

  820. In this way

  821. God with us

  822. Do you see

  823. Him

  824. As God's

  825. Anointed

  826. One

  827. Who is

  828. Saviour

  829. Of the world

  830. The kingdom

  831. Faith

  832. And remarkably

  833. As soon

  834. As Peter

  835. Makes that

  836. Confession

  837. Jesus

  838. Comes to

  839. Affirm him

  840. In his

  841. Faith

  842. The very

  843. Thing that

  844. Perhaps you

  845. And I

  846. Are looking

  847. For today

  848. You want

  849. Jesus to

  850. Confirm that

  851. You are

  852. A believer

  853. That you

  854. Are a

  855. Child of

  856. God

  857. And get

  858. Here

  859. The role

  860. Is reversed

  861. The responsibilities

  862. On the disciples

  863. First of all

  864. To say

  865. Who they think

  866. Jesus is

  867. And then

  868. Comes Jesus

  869. To Peter

  870. And says to

  871. Him

  872. In verse

  873. Number 17

  874. Blessed are

  875. You

  876. Simon

  877. Bar

  878. Jonah

  879. For flesh

  880. And blood

  881. Has not revealed

  882. This to you

  883. But my

  884. Father who

  885. Is in

  886. Heaven

  887. Blessed

  888. Are you

  889. Blessed

  890. In the sense

  891. Of being

  892. Deeply happy

  893. Because

  894. God's

  895. End time

  896. Salvation

  897. Has come

  898. To dwell

  899. In your

  900. Heart

  901. And by

  902. The confession

  903. That you

  904. Have made

  905. You have

  906. Confirmed

  907. That you

  908. Are in

  909. Possession

  910. Of that

  911. Very

  912. Salvation

  913. That God

  914. Has promised

  915. For his

  916. People

  917. Blessed

  918. Happy

  919. Joyous

  920. A deep

  921. Seated

  922. Contentment

  923. And in

  924. The affirmation

  925. He reminds

  926. Peter

  927. That it

  928. Was not

  929. Possible

  930. That he

  931. Could have

  932. Discovered

  933. This for

  934. Himself

  935. Throwing

  936. Attention

  937. To the

  938. Fact that

  939. Salvation

  940. Is by

  941. Grace

  942. Alone

  943. What does

  944. Jesus say

  945. To Peter

  946. Flesh

  947. And blood

  948. In other

  949. Words

  950. Not you

  951. Or anyone

  952. Else

  953. Flesh

  954. And blood

  955. Has not

  956. Revealed

  957. This to

  958. You

  959. But my

  960. Father

  961. Who is

  962. In

  963. Heaven

  964. A

  965. Revelation

  966. From God

  967. I

  968. Has not

  969. Seen

  970. Nor

  971. You

  972. Heard

  973. Neither

  974. Has it

  975. Come

  976. Into

  977. The

  978. Heart

  979. Of

  980. Man

  981. Paul

  982. Says

  983. The

  984. Things

  985. That God

  986. Has

  987. Prepared

  988. For

  989. Those

  990. Who

  991. Love

  992. Him

  993. But

  994. God

  995. Has

  996. Revealed

  997. Them

  998. To

  999. Us

  1000. By

  1001. His

  1002. Spirit

  1003. It

  1004. Is

  1005. A

  1006. Revelation

  1007. You

  1008. Are

  1009. Happy

  1010. Because

  1011. God

  1012. Has

  1013. Revealed

  1014. This

  1015. To

  1016. You

  1017. And

  1018. Now

  1019. Let

  1020. Me

  1021. Tell

  1022. You

  1023. You

  1024. Have

  1025. Said

  1026. That

  1027. I

  1028. Am

  1029. The

  1030. Christ

  1031. The

  1032. Son

  1033. Of

  1034. The

  1035. Living

  1036. God

  1037. And

  1038. In

  1039. The

  1040. End

  1041. Of

  1042. That

  1043. Verse

  1044. I

  1045. Tell

  1046. You

  1047. You

  1048. Are

  1049. Peter

  1050. Peter

  1051. In

  1052. His

  1053. Confession

  1054. Has

  1055. Identified

  1056. The

  1057. Lord

  1058. Jesus

  1059. And

  1060. Jesus

  1061. In

  1062. Response

  1063. Has

  1064. Identified

  1065. Simon

  1066. Son

  1067. Of

  1068. Jonah

  1069. As

  1070. Peter

  1071. The

  1072. One

  1073. Who

  1074. Is

  1075. Sernoned

  1076. Peter

  1077. Later

  1078. On

  1079. In

  1080. The

  1081. Gospel

  1082. Of

  1083. Mark

  1084. In

  1085. The

  1086. Bible

  1087. He

  1088. Identifies

  1089. Simon

  1090. As

  1091. Peter

  1092. A

  1093. New

  1094. Name

  1095. A

  1096. New

  1097. Life

  1098. A

  1099. New

  1100. Beginning

  1101. A

  1102. New

  1103. Name

  1104. Given

  1105. By

  1106. The

  1107. Person

  1108. Who

  1109. Has

  1110. Authority

  1111. And

  1112. The

  1113. Person

  1114. Who

  1115. Has

  1116. The

  1117. Authority

  1118. Which

  1119. Demands

  1120. The

  1121. New

  1122. Life

  1123. Of

  1124. The

  1125. Person

  1126. Who

  1127. Has

  1128. The

  1129. New

  1130. Name

  1131. The

  1132. Kingdom

  1133. Faith

  1134. And let

  1135. Me

  1136. Tell

  1137. You

  1138. Today

  1139. That there

  1140. Is

  1141. Nothing

  1142. More

  1143. Powerfully

  1144. Life

  1145. Transforming

  1146. And

  1147. Self

  1148. Satisfying

  1149. Than

  1150. To

  1151. Hear

  1152. Jesus

  1153. Christ

  1154. Affirming

  1155. Our

  1156. Discipleship

  1157. In

  1158. This

  1159. Way

  1160. Coming

  1161. Into

  1162. Our

  1163. Very

  1164. Hearts

  1165. And

  1166. Saying

  1167. I

  1168. Tell

  1169. You

  1170. Who

  1171. You

  1172. Are

  1173. I

  1174. Tell

  1175. You

  1176. That

  1177. My

  1178. Father

  1179. Has

  1180. Revealed

  1181. This

  1182. To

  1183. You

  1184. And

  1185. I

  1186. Tell

  1187. You

  1188. That

  1189. You

  1190. Are

  1191. Blessed

  1192. And

  1193. That's

  1194. Where

  1195. Jesus

  1196. Wants

  1197. To

  1198. Take

  1199. Us

  1200. All

  1201. Today

  1202. And

  1203. Challenging

  1204. Us

  1205. With

  1206. This

  1207. Question

  1208. Asking

  1209. Us

  1210. To

  1211. Examine

  1212. Our

  1213. Hearts

  1214. And

  1215. Our

  1216. Lives

  1217. And

  1218. To

  1219. Bring

  1220. Us

  1221. To

  1222. That

  1223. Place

  1224. Where

  1225. We

  1226. Will

  1227. Put

  1228. Our

  1229. Trust

  1230. In

  1231. Him

  1232. And

  1233. Discover

  1234. The

  1235. Blessedness

  1236. Discover

  1237. The

  1238. Joy

  1239. Discover

  1240. The

  1241. Relationship

  1242. And

  1243. Find

  1244. Our

  1245. Contentment

  1246. In

  1247. Him

  1248. Kingdom

  1249. Faith

  1250. Do

  1251. You

  1252. Have

  1253. It

  1254. Today

  1255. And

  1256. As

  1257. Jesus

  1258. Now

  1259. Saying

  1260. To

  1261. You

  1262. I

  1263. Tell

  1264. You

  1265. You're

  1266. Mine

  1267. I

  1268. Tell

  1269. You're

  1270. Mine

  1271. To

  1272. Follow

  1273. Me

  1274. To

  1275. Be

  1276. My

  1277. Disciple

  1278. I

  1279. Tell

  1280. You

  1281. You're

  1282. Precious

  1283. To

  1284. Me

  1285. I

  1286. Tell

  1287. You

  1288. I

  1289. Will

  1290. Be

  1291. With

  1292. You

  1293. The

  1294. Kingdom

  1295. Faith

  1296. Secondly

  1297. We

  1298. See

  1299. In

  1300. The

  1302. Kingdom

  1303. Formation

  1304. Verse

  1307. I

  1308. Tell

  1309. You

  1310. You

  1311. Are

  1312. Peter

  1313. And

  1314. On

  1315. This

  1316. Rock

  1317. I

  1318. Will

  1319. Build

  1320. My

  1321. Church

  1322. On

  1323. This

  1324. Rock

  1325. Rock

  1326. What

  1327. Is

  1328. This

  1329. Referring

  1330. To

  1331. Referring

  1332. Back

  1333. To

  1334. What

  1335. I

  1336. Want

  1337. Us

  1338. To

  1339. Think

  1340. Today

  1341. That

  1342. There

  1343. Is

  1344. A

  1345. Multi

  1348. On

  1349. On

  1350. The

  1365. That

  1366. The

  1367. Rock

  1368. Is

  1369. Christ

  1370. That

  1371. Is

  1372. What

  1373. We

  1374. Saw

  1375. From

  1376. Matthew

  1377. 17

  1378. In

  1379. The

  1380. Children's

  1385. My

  1386. Words

  1387. And

  1388. Do

  1389. Them

  1390. You

  1391. Will

  1392. Be

  1393. Like

  1394. A

  1395. Wise

  1396. Person

  1397. Who

  1398. Builds

  1399. His

  1400. House

  1425. Speaks

  1426. About

  1427. The

  1478. Unshakable

  1479. Rock

  1480. Which

  1481. Is

  1482. Christ

  1483. As

  1484. The

  1485. Eternal

  1486. Son

  1487. Of

  1488. God

  1489. Unbreakable

  1490. Immovable

  1491. Who

  1492. Stands

  1493. Forever

  1494. Sure

  1495. But

  1496. Along

  1497. With

  1498. That

  1570. Jesus

  1571. Who

  1575. Of

  1576. Our

  1623. That

  1624. Is

  1625. What

  1626. Jesus

  1627. Is

  1628. Doing

  1629. Always

  1630. Through

  1631. The

  1632. Gospel

  1633. Calling

  1634. People

  1635. Out

  1636. Of

  1637. The

  1638. Darkness

  1639. In

  1640. Which

  1666. These

  1667. Very

  1668. Living

  1669. Stones

  1671. As

  1672. Peter

  1673. Describes

  1674. Them

  1675. In

  1676. 1

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  1677. Peter

  1678. Chapter

  1685. Up

  1686. As

  1687. We

  1688. Come

  1689. To

  1690. Him

  1691. We

  1692. Are

  1693. Built

  1697. Stone

  1698. On

  1707. As

  1708. A

  1709. Spiritual

  1710. House

  1711. And

  1712. Today

  1713. Jesus

  1714. Continues

  1715. That

  1716. Building

  1717. Project

  1718. It's

  1719. According

  1720. To

  1721. God's

  1722. Design

  1723. It's

  1724. Forming

  1725. His

  1726. Family

  1727. That's

  1728. What

  1729. His

  1730. Kingdom

  1731. Is

  1732. Like

  1733. It's

  1734. Not

  1735. A

  1736. Building

  1737. As

  1738. We

  1739. Worship

  1740. In

  1741. A

  1742. Building

  1743. Today

  1744. It's

  1745. A

  1756. Me

  1757. Who

  1758. Have

  1759. The

  1760. Spirit

  1761. Of

  1762. God

  1763. In

  1764. Our

  1765. Hearts

  1766. The

  1767. Spirit

  1768. That

  1769. Has

  1770. Made

  1771. Us

  1772. The

  1773. Living

  1774. Children

  1775. Of

  1776. God

  1777. On

  1778. This

  1779. Rock

  1780. I

  1781. Will

  1782. Build

  1783. My

  1784. House

  1785. I

  1786. Wonder

  1787. Today

  1788. If

  1789. You're

  1790. Part

  1791. Of

  1792. This

  1793. Great

  1794. Building

  1795. Project

  1796. I

  1797. Wonder

  1798. Today

  1799. If

  1800. If

  1801. You

  1802. Responded

  1803. To

  1804. The

  1805. Powerful

  1806. Irresistible

  1807. Call

  1808. Of

  1809. Jesus

  1810. In

  1811. The

  1812. Gospel

  1813. Come

  1814. To

  1815. Me

  1816. Believe

  1817. In

  1818. The

  1819. Lord

  1820. Jesus

  1821. Christ

  1822. And

  1823. You'll

  1824. Be

  1825. Saved

  1826. The

  1827. Powerful

  1828. Claim

  1829. Of

  1830. God

  1831. Which

  1832. Is

  1833. Irresistible

  1834. Not

  1835. In

  1836. The

  1837. Sense

  1838. That

  1839. It's

  1840. More

  1841. Powerful

  1842. Than

  1843. You

  1844. But

  1845. Irresistible

  1846. In

  1847. The

  1848. Sense

  1849. That

  1850. It's

  1851. The

  1852. Most

  1853. Attractive

  1854. Thing

  1855. That

  1856. You'll

  1857. Ever

  1858. Hear

  1859. !

  1860. Together

  1861. To

  1862. Come

  1863. From

  1864. Where

  1865. You

  1866. Were

  1867. Without

  1868. Christ

  1869. As

  1870. Your

  1871. Saviour

  1872. To

  1873. Be

  1874. In

  1875. A

  1876. Place

  1877. Where

  1878. Christ

  1879. Is

  1880. Your

  1881. Saviour

  1882. It's

  1883. The

  1884. Easiest

  1885. The

  1886. Best

  1887. The

  1888. Most

  1889. Blessed

  1890. Step

  1891. That

  1892. You

  1893. Can

  1894. Ever

  1895. Take

  1896. Have

  1897. You

  1898. Heard

  1899. The

  1900. Call

  1901. Have

  1902. You

  1903. Come

  1904. To

  1905. Make

  1906. The

  1907. Same

  1908. Confession

  1909. Giving

  1910. Expression

  1911. To

  1912. The

  1913. Genuineness

  1914. Of

  1915. Your

  1916. Faith

  1917. And

  1918. Giving

  1919. Expression

  1920. To

  1921. The

  1922. Very

  1923. Fact

  1924. That

  1925. Jesus

  1926. Christ

  1927. Is

  1928. Indeed

  1929. Precious

  1930. And

  1931. That

  1932. In

  1933. Accord

  1934. With

  1935. God's

  1936. Design

  1937. Your

  1938. Heart

  1939. Has

  1944. Have

  1945. Been

  1946. Opened

  1947. Your

  1948. Mind

  1949. Has

  1950. Been

  1951. Enlightened

  1952. And

  1953. You

  1954. See

  1955. Jesus

  1956. As

  1957. The

  1958. Light

  1959. Of

  1960. The

  1961. World

  1962. In

  1963. Whom

  1964. You

  1965. Trust

  1966. Wholeheartedly

  1967. And

  1968. Completely

  1969. The

  1970. Kingdom

  1971. Formation

  1972. And

  1973. As

  1974. We

  1975. Move

  1976. On

  1977. Jesus

  1978. Wants

  1979. Them

  1980. To

  1981. Know

  1982. That

  1983. They

  1984. Are

  1985. Secure

  1986. They

  1987. Felt

  1989. Secure

  1990. In

  1991. The

  1993. Of

  1994. Jesus

  1995. Because

  1996. Of

  1997. The

  1999. Enmity

  2000. Around

  2001. Jesus

  2002. We

  2004. Insecure

  2005. Ourselves

  2006. In

  2007. The

  2008. World

  2009. Which

  2010. Is

  2011. So

  2012. Much

  2013. Against

  2014. The

  2015. Gospel

  2016. And

  2017. Wants

  2018. To

  2019. Silence

  2020. And

  2021. Exclude

  2022. Us

  2023. In

  2024. Life

  2025. And

  2026. Wants

  2027. To

  2028. Persecute

  2029. Us

  2030. For

  2031. Holding

  2032. On

  2033. To

  2034. The

  2035. Truth

  2036. It's

  2037. A

  2038. Place

  2039. Where

  2040. We

  2041. Can

  2042. Be

  2043. Fearful

  2044. And

  2045. Where

  2046. That

  2047. Fear

  2048. Can

  2049. Cause

  2050. Us

  2051. To

  2052. Stumble

  2053. And

  2054. Paralyse

  2055. Our

  2056. Faith

  2057. So

  2058. That

  2059. We

  2060. Keep

  2061. Our

  2062. Faith

  2063. Privately

  2064. In

  2065. Our

  2066. Hearts

  2067. Jesus

  2068. Wants

  2069. To

  2070. Tell

  2071. Them

  2072. The

  2073. Gates

  2074. Of

  2075. Hell

  2076. Shall

  2077. Not

  2078. Prevail

  2079. Against

  2080. It

  2081. There

  2082. Are

  2083. Two

  2084. Cities

  2085. With

  2086. Two

  2087. Powers

  2088. With

  2089. Two

  2090. Gates

  2091. Access

  2092. For

  2093. The

  2094. People

  2095. Of

  2096. The

  2097. City

  2098. And

  2099. The

  2100. Doors

  2101. Shut

  2102. So

  2103. The

  2104. Enemy

  2105. Doesn't

  2106. Come

  2107. In

  2108. The

  2109. Gates

  2110. Of

  2111. Hell

  2112. The

  2113. Gates

  2114. Of

  2115. Death

  2116. Will

  2117. Not

  2118. Prevail

  2119. Because

  2120. Jesus

  2121. As

  2122. We

  2123. See

  2124. Going

  2125. Forward

  2126. In

  2127. The

  2128. Gospels

  2129. He

  2130. Dies

  2131. For

  2132. Our

  2133. Sins

  2134. He

  2135. Gives

  2136. Himself

  2137. Over

  2138. To

  2139. Death

  2140. He

  2141. Is

  2142. Raised

  2143. From

  2144. The

  2145. Death

  2146. Says

  2147. The

  2148. Same

  2149. Peter

  2150. In

  2151. Acts

  2152. Two

  2153. Because

  2154. It

  2155. Was

  2156. Impossible

  2157. For

  2158. Death

  2159. To

  2160. Hold

  2161. Him

  2162. And

  2163. Now

  2164. The

  2165. Gates

  2166. Of

  2167. Death

  2168. Will

  2169. Not

  2170. Have

  2171. The

  2172. Victory

  2173. Or

  2174. Prevail

  2175. Against

  2176. The

  2177. Church

  2178. Of

  2179. Christ

  2180. The

  2181. Church

  2182. Of

  2183. Christ

  2184. As

  2185. A

  2186. Whole

  2187. And

  2188. The

  2189. Christian

  2190. As

  2191. An

  2192. Individual

  2193. The

  2194. Kingdom

  2195. Formation

  2196. There

  2197. Is

  2198. No

  2199. Better

  2200. Place

  2201. To

  2202. Be

  2203. Found

  2204. In

  2205. Today

  2206. There

  2207. Is

  2208. No

  2209. Saver

  2210. Place

  2211. To

  2212. Be

  2213. Found

  2214. In

  2215. Today

  2216. And

  2217. There

  2218. Is

  2219. No

  2220. More

  2221. Blessed

  2222. And

  2223. Happy

  2224. Place

  2225. To

  2226. Be

  2227. Found

  2228. In

  2229. Today

  2230. Than

  2231. To

  2232. Be

  2233. We

  2234. Have

  2235. Kingdom

  2236. Faith

  2237. We

  2238. Have

  2239. Kingdom

  2240. Formation

  2241. And

  2242. Finally

  2243. We

  2244. Have

  2245. Kingdom

  2246. Function

  2247. How

  2248. Does

  2249. This

  2250. Kingdom

  2251. Work

  2252. How

  2253. Does

  2254. The

  2255. Church

  2256. Work

  2257. In

  2258. The

  2259. World

  2260. Well

  2261. We

  2262. Learned

  2263. Something

  2264. About

  2265. That

  2266. From

  2267. Verse

  2268. Number

  2269. Nineteen

2270. I will give you the keys of the kingdom.

  2271. It's a great statement.

  2272. It's a mysterious statement.

2273. We know that keys are for letting people in

2274. and for letting people out

2275. and for locking the door for safety and for security.

2276. It is about going in and coming out the keys of the kingdom.

  2277. In the Old Testament,

2278. we see that in the prophecy of Isaiah,

2279. that Eliakim is over the house of David,

2280. that he has the keys and that he has the authority

2281. to keep out and to let in those who are around.

2282. And we read the Gospels,

2283. and we see in chapter 23 of this Gospel itself

2284. that Jesus is accusing the scribes and Pharisees

2285. to whom he's referring here.

2286. He is accusing them of shutting the kingdom of heaven

  2287. in people's faces,

2288. so that neither you enter your cells

2289. nor allow those who would enter to go in.

2290. They had the keys of the kingdom, they thought.

2291. And they had their own standards,

2292. and they claimed to be the ones

2293. who allowed access into the kingdom

  2294. and who said,

2295. no, you can't be in the kingdom.

2296. And having the keys of the kingdom

2297. is further defined by Jesus.

2298. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven,

2299. and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

2300. And without expanding too much on that,

2301. we can think of the understanding of the rabbis

2302. in the days of Jesus as to what that meant.

2303. And it meant simply that they were the ones

2304. who allowed or disallowed conduct.

2305. They were the ones who allowed or disallowed

2306. people to come in or to go out.

2307. And they did so based on the Old Testament law

2308. and what they added to it.

2309. So there is the function.

  2310. Allowed to come in

2311. or not allowed to come in.

2312. Allowed to come back in

2313. or not allowed to come back in.

2314. That's the way in which

2315. the people in the days of Jesus

  2316. would understand.

2317. And so today we're thinking of kingdom function.

2318. What does that function look like

2319. for the church of Jesus Christ

  2320. in the world

2321. and wherever we are ourselves?

2322. It looks like it has three elements that define it.

2323. It looks like there is a mission.

2324. There is a message to be proclaimed.

2325. There is the going to all nations

2326. and to make disciples of them,

2327. teaching them to observe the things

  2328. that Jesus has commanded.

2329. The church functions by proclaiming the gospel,

2330. by following on to the mission of Jesus.

2331. The church functions by admitting people

2332. into the church of Christ

  2333. based on their confession.

2334. If people make the same confession

  2335. that Peter has made,

2336. then they come into the church of Jesus.

2337. They are admitted by the church

2338. to be part of this great building project.

2339. It is a case of admission.

2340. It is a case of excluding and of including.

2341. The church has the duty and the right

2342. and the authority to do exactly that.

2343. And the Kirk sessions do that for us.

2344. And the different courts of the church

  2345. do that for us.

2346. And thirdly, there is the sense of looking after,

  2347. of pastoring, of shepherding.

2348. And Jesus says to Peter in John 20,

2349. in examining him and questioning him,

2350. if he had love for him,

  2351. Jesus said to him,

2352. go and tend my sheep.

2353. Go and feed my sheep.

2354. Go and pasture my sheep.

2355. And so that the kingdom functioned

2356. with regard to the church itself

2357. is to fulfill that ministry

2358. on the part of Jesus.

  2359. to preach, to pastor,

2360. and to recognize genuine faith

2361. where it arises because of the grace of God

2362. and to embrace such people

  2363. with genuine faith

  2364. into the kingdom,

2365. into the church of Jesus,

2366. to grow up with the people of God

2367. so that the church develops and grows.

2368. And that's what the church does

  2369. in every generation.

2370. that is the church's responsibility

2371. to fulfill its kingdom function.

2372. But I want to close by saying

2373. that the Christian also has a responsibility

2374. in fulfilling a kingdom function.

2375. and is based on this very principle

2376. on having the keys of the kingdom

2377. on whatever you bind on earth

  2378. be bound in heaven

  2379. and loose on earth

2380. shall be loosed in heaven.

  2381. That principle Jesus applies

2382. to all of the disciples

  2383. in John chapter 20

    John 20 chapter mention

2384. when he sends them out into the world

2385. and he tells them in similar words

2386. that as the Father has sent me

  2387. so I send you.

2388. They are to go out

2389. and to live their life of discipleship

2390. to continue the work of Jesus

2391. to continue the work of Peter

2392. to continue the work of all of the apostles

2393. to continue the work of every succeeding generation

  2394. of the church.

2395. The Christian has a responsibility.

2396. And for all of us here today

2397. we recognize the responsibility of the church.

2398. But Jesus wants us to recognize

  2399. our own personal responsibility.

2400. That as surely as Peter

  2401. embraced the mission

2402. and ministry of the church

2403. when he made this confession

2404. that so you and I

2405. are to embrace that same mission

  2406. and that same ministry

  2407. according to the way

2408. in which the Lord Jesus

2409. has appointed us so to do.

2410. And we do so in three ways.

2411. We do so as the light of the world.

2412. You are the light of the world

  2413. says Jesus.

2414. You don't hide your light

  2415. under a lampshade

  2416. under a bushel.

  2417. You let it shine

2418. so that people will see

  2419. your good works.

  2420. There is no place

2421. in the function of the church

  2422. of Jesus

2423. for people to have their faith

2424. in the quietness of a corner,

  2425. a tomb.

  2426. It is the responsibility

2427. to live that life of faith

  2428. in the public domain

2429. and to be the light

  2430. that people will see

2431. that is connected to Jesus

2432. who is the light of the world.

2433. The Christian has the important function also

2434. to be an influence for good

2435. in the sense that Jesus says

2436. you are the salt of the earth.

2437. You are to influence behavior

2438. not only within the church

  2439. and within our homes

  2440. but within our community

  2441. and within the nation

  2442. to which we belong

  2443. and in our world.

2444. We are to be the salt of the earth.

  2445. Our lifestyle

  2446. confirms our discipleship.

  2447. It confirms also

2448. that we belong to Jesus

2449. and makes that clearly known

  2450. in the world.

2451. And that's the third thing

2452. that we have a responsibility for

  2453. that kind of proclamation

  2454. making known.

2455. And Peter says to his readers

  2456. in 1 Peter chapter 2

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  2457. you are a people

  2458. for his own possession.

  2459. That's your identity.

  2460. That's the Christian's identity.

2461. So that you may proclaim

  2462. the excellencies

2463. of whom we called you

  2464. from darkness into light.

  2465. that's our functional responsibility.

2466. And God calls us today

2467. as the new Christian community

2468. or as the New Testament

  2469. Christian community

  2470. to fulfill our responsibility

  2471. to be the light

  2472. to be the salt

2473. and to be that influence

2474. that we may speak out

2475. the excellencies of our Savior.

  2476. It should be

  2477. the most natural

  2478. and easiest thing

  2479. in the world

2480. to tell about the beauty

  2481. of the Savior

  2482. that we have loved

2483. and who has loved us.

  2484. And God,

  2485. Jesus commands us today

  2486. that we

  2487. fulfill our responsibility

2488. and be the children of light

  2489. as he has commanded.

  2490. And in closing,

2491. those who belong to my generation

  2492. at least will know

  2493. Brian Clough,

  2494. who was perhaps

  2495. one of the greatest

  2496. football managers

  2497. in the last century

  2498. in the 1970s

  2499. and the 1980s.

  2500. And after losing

  2501. a football match,

  2502. he said this,

2503. we had a good football team

  2504. on paper.

  2505. And fortunately,

  2506. the game of football

  2507. is played on grass.

  2508. And I think that

  2509. in some ways

  2510. captures sometimes

  2511. the way we are

  2512. as a church.

  2513. We have a list

  2514. of great names.

  2515. but Jesus wants us

  2516. to pray the gospel

  2517. out on grass.

2518. And that's where we fail.

  2519. And so the faith

  2520. that we profess

  2521. and the grace

2522. that shines in our lives

2523. in the confession of faith

  2524. is something

  2525. that must work out

  2526. on the playing field

  2527. of the witness

  2528. of the church

  2529. and in the service

  2530. of Christ.

2531. And once we do that,

  2532. the church is functioning

  2533. the way that

  2534. the great architect

  2535. designed it

  2536. and what a powerful

  2537. influence

  2538. the church is then

  2539. when it's functioning

  2540. as it should.

  2541. And so may God

  2542. help us with

  2543. kingdom faith,

  2544. may help us

  2545. with kingdom formation,

  2546. and may help us

  2547. with our

  2548. kingdom responsibility

  2549. as the quotes

  2550. of the church

  2551. of Christ

  2552. in the world

  2553. and as individual believers

  2554. who are called

  2555. to serve

  2556. and to follow

  2557. the Lord Jesus.

  2558. May God bless

  2559. his word to us.

  2560. Let us pray.

  2561. Most gracious God,

2562. we do rejoice in you

  2563. as the God

  2564. who is our saviour,

  2565. who by your power

  2566. has redeemed us

  2567. and reconciled us

  2568. to yourself.

  2569. Give thanks to you

  2570. that you have done

  2571. the work that we

  2572. could never do.

  2573. And help us today

2574. to stand on that foundation.

  2575. Help us to live

  2576. as those who are

  2577. your children.

2578. Help us to show forth

  2579. your excellencies,

  2580. your salvation,

  2581. your grace.

  2582. Help us to be

  2583. practical

  2584. and living witnesses

  2585. for you

  2586. and servants

  2587. in whatever area

  2588. of service

  2589. you called us

  2590. to work in.

  2591. May you move

  2592. our hearts and lives

  2593. and enable us

  2594. to serve you

  2595. with joy

  2596. for the glory

  2597. of your name

  2598. and for the good

  2599. of your kingdom.

  2600. So hear a prayer

  2601. and accept us

  2602. for Jesus' sake.

  2603. Amen.

  2604. Chloe's Psalm
