  1. It's my pleasure this morning to welcome with us Reverend Rory Stott. He's Minister in Fort Throes in the Black Isle.

  2. ! Myself and Rory, we began studies in the Free Church College as it was known then, which is now the Free Church Seminary, back in 2008.

  3. And we went through college years together, so it's a privilege, a delight to welcome him to the Pope.

  4. But he's never preached here in Stornoway before, but he's got close ties with Stornoway.

  5. He actually met his wife, Kirsteen, on a trip over to Lewis, and we're delighted that Kirsteen is able to be with us today as well.

  6. So please do speak to him if you come through to the hall afterwards.

  7. Himself and Kirsteen, they'll be delighted to meet with you as well.

  8. So my pleasure to hand over to Rory now to lead us in our worship.

  9. Thank you so much. It is such a privilege to be with you today, to worship God.

  10. Shall we just listen to the Word of God in Isaiah in chapter 40?

  11. The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth.

  12. He does not faint or grow weary. His understanding is unsearchable.

  13. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might, he increases strength.

  14. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted.

  15. But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.

  16. They shall mount up with wings like eagles.

  17. They shall run and not be weary.

  18. They shall walk and not faint.

  19. Let us worship God.

  20. And we're going to sing in Psalm 103.

  21. And sing Psalm 103, verses 1 to 11.

    Psalms 103:1–11

  22. Let's sing to God's praise.

  23. Amen.

  24. Praise God, my soul, with all my heart.

  25. Let me exalt his holy name.

  26. Forget not all his benefits.

  27. His praise, my soul, in song proclaim.

  28. The Lord forgives you all your sins.

  29. And heals your sickness and distress.

  30. Your life he rescues from the grave.

  31. And crowns you in his tenderness.

  32. He satisfies your deep desires.

  33. From his unending source of good.

  34. So that, just like the eagle's strength.

  35. Your beautiful vigor is renewed.

  36. The Lord is known for righteous acts.

  37. And justice too, down-trodden ones.

  38. To Moses he gave known his ways.

  39. His mighty deeds to Israel's sons.

  40. The Lord is merciful and kind.

  41. To anger slow and full of grace.

  42. He will not constantly reprove.

  43. For in his anger hide his face.

  44. He does not punish our misdeeds.

  45. Forgive our sins, their just reward.

  46. For the Lord.

  47. How great is love as high as hen.

  48. To hearts of those who fear the Lord.

  49. Let us pray.

  50. Let us pray.

  51. Let us pray.

  52. Let us pray.

  53. Let us pray.

  54. Let us pray.

  55. Let us pray.

  56. Let us pray.

  57. Let us pray.

  58. Let us pray.

  59. Let us pray.

  60. Let us pray.

  61. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  62. You are worthy of all praise and honor and glory.

  63. Father, we confess our sins before you this morning.

  64. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and in deed.

  65. Forgive us for all our shortcomings.

  66. We thank you that in Jesus Christ there is forgiveness and there is hope.

  67. We do thank you and we praise you for the hope that we have in the gospel.

  68. We thank you again, dear Lord, for your creation.

  69. We thank you for the beauty that surrounds us.

  70. And as we look out on such a glorious morning, we cannot help but worship you and praise you.

  71. We thank you for the mountains and the seas.

  72. We thank you for the birds, the singing birds.

  73. We thank you, Lord, for all that reminds us of your goodness and your mercy and your love and your power, your creativity.

  74. We thank you for all these things.

  75. Lord, we long to hear from you.

  76. So help us to put aside all that distracts us and to focus on you.

  77. And we pray this in Jesus' name and for his sake.

  78. Amen.

  79. Amen.

  80. Amen.

  81. Okay, boys and girls.

  82. Now, I don't really know how many boys and girls are here.

  83. I can see as I look out, I can see a few young faces.

  84. And I wonder, boys and girls, if I had to ask you what a missionary is, I wonder if you would know the answer.

  85. What is a missionary?

  86. And I don't think in this church that you would shout out, would you?

  87. But if I had to ask you what a missionary is, and a short answer is that a missionary is, say, somebody who is sent out to tell people about Jesus Christ.

  88. Now, I wonder if you enjoy Paw Patrol.

  89. Paw Patrol is a great program.

  90. And I wonder who your favorite Paw Patrol dog is.

  91. Now, I've got to confess that my favorite is Chase.

  92. And there are a couple of reasons for that.

  93. Chase is always dressed in blue.

  94. You know that.

  95. And Chase is just very cool.

  96. He's normally wearing his police hat.

  97. And he goes out and he helps rider.

  98. Otherwise, there's Rocky or Zuma or Sky.

  99. Sky is very cool.

  100. If you like pink, then Sky is for you.

  101. Sky goes up in the helicopter and does everything that rider asks her to do.

  102. Now, what I really love is when there's a problem and the Paw Patrol are called via their pup pads.

  103. And their pup pads sort of make the sound and they all go together to the center.

  104. And rider says, there's a problem.

  105. We need you to help.

  106. And he's always a really, really organized rider.

  107. And he says, you go, Zuma, you do this.

  108. And Chase, you do that.

  109. And Sky, I want you to do this.

  110. Really, really good planning and well organized.

  111. But rider sends them off with their instructions.

  112. He sends them off.

  113. And they all know exactly what they have to do.

  114. And they, oh, it's just so cool.

  115. When they go down that slide and they fall into these very smart Paw Patrol vehicles.

  116. And they've all got their unique vehicles.

  117. And they go out and they do their thing.

  118. But they're sent out, aren't they?

  119. And the Bible tells us very, very clearly that God's people are sent out into the world to tell people about Jesus.

  120. Now, everybody is gifted in different ways.

  121. And so they can use their gifts to help in that work.

  122. Somebody might be really good on the computer and they can help with that.

  123. Or they might be good at speaking.

  124. Or they might be good mechanics or whatever it is.

  125. And they can serve God in that way.

  126. Paw Patrol reminds us that Jesus tells all his children to go out and tell people about him.

  127. Boys and girls, thank you so much for listening.

  128. We're going to say the Lord's Prayer together as we pray together.

  129. Our Father, which art in heaven.

  130. Amen.

  131. Hallowed be thy name.

  132. Thy kingdom come.

  133. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  134. Give us this day our daily bread.

  135. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  136. Lead us not into temptation.

  137. But deliver us from evil.

  138. For thine is the kingdom.

  139. The power and the glory.

  140. Forever and ever.

  141. Amen.

  142. Amen.

  143. Amen.

  144. Amen.

  145. I'm going to sing again in Psalm 40.

  146. Psalm number 40 and sing psalms on page 50 of the psalm books.

  147. Psalm 40 verses 1 to 8 on page 50.

    Psalms 40:1–8

  148. I waited long upon the Lord.

  149. He heard my cry and turned to me.

  150. He raised me from the slimy pit.

  151. And from the mire he pulled me free.

  152. Let's sing to God's praise.

  153. I waited long upon the Lord.

  154. I waited long upon the Lord.

  155. He heard my cry and turned to me.

  156. He raised me from the slimy pit.

  157. And from the mire he pulled me free.

  158. He raised me from the slimy pit.

  159. And from the mire he pulled me free.

  160. He set my feet on solid rock.

  161. A place to stand bold, firm and broad.

  162. He put a new song in my mouth.

  163. A joyful hymn of praise to God.

  164. Many will look with godly fear.

  165. And on the Lord alone rely.

  166. Blessed are they who trust the Lord.

  167. Who shone the proud and gods that lie.

  168. Thou wonders you have a full heart.

  169. How many and how great they are.

  170. You and sorrows are far beyond.

  171. Their power to number or declare.

  172. You did not ask that cast or goats.

  173. He brought a sacrifice for sin.

  174. But you have opened up my ears.

  175. You did not seek burnt offering.

  176. Please, if you are,

  177. Please, if you are,

  178. Please, if you are,

  179. Please, if you are,

  180. Please, if you are,

  181. Please, if you are,

  182. Please, if you are,

  183. Please, if you are,

  184. Please, if you are,

  185. Pure will, my God, pure love is in my heart and soul.

  186. Thank you.

  187. Shall we turn in our Bibles, turn with me to Matthew's Gospel and chapter 28.

  188. Matthew's Gospel and chapter 28, last chapter in the Gospel of Matthew.

  189. And this is a chapter about the resurrection and the famous words of Jesus to his disciples

  190. in that last little section of the chapter, what we call the Great Commission.

  191. And that's what we're going to be thinking about this morning.

  192. So let me read the whole chapter, Matthew and chapter 28.

  193. Now after the Sabbath, towards the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and

  194. the other Mary went to see the tomb.

  195. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven

  196. and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.

  197. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing white as snow.

  198. And for fear of him, the guards trembled and became like dead men.

  199. But the angel said to the woman, Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who was crucified.

  200. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said.

  201. Come, see the place where he lay.

  202. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead.

  203. And behold, he is going before you to Galilee.

  204. There you will see him.

  205. See, I have told you.

  206. So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy and ran to tell his disciples.

  207. And behold, Jesus met them and said greetings.

  208. And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshipped him.

  209. Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid.

  210. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.

  211. While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place.

  212. And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers and said,

  213. Tell people.

  214. His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.

  215. And if this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.

  216. So they took the money and did as they were directed.

  217. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

  218. Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

  219. And when they saw him, they worshipped him.

  220. But some doubted.

  221. And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  222. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  223. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  224. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

  225. Amen.

  226. This is God's inerrant word.

  227. And we pray his blessing on that reading.

  228. Friends, shall we again just bow our heads and pray?

  229. Let's pray.

  230. Father, we do thank you for that great commission to go out and make disciples of all nations.

  231. We bless you, Lord God, that your desire is that all would be saved.

  232. And we thank you that you use the ordinary to bring about transformation and change in people's lives.

  233. Father, this morning we are conscious of those who are saddened, of those who are grieving.

  234. And we do pray that you would be with those who are mourning the loss of loved ones.

  235. We reflect on the tragedy that took place on Friday evening and a family that is heartbroken.

  236. We pray for that family.

  237. We pray, Heavenly Father, that you would be very close to them at this time.

  238. We thank you, Lord, for the promises of your word that tell us that you are close to the brokenhearted.

  239. But, Lord, not only those who are grieving, but there will be some who have received difficult news this last week.

  240. We live in a broken, fallen world.

  241. And life is full of uncertainty and pain and suffering.

  242. And so we pray, Lord, for those who are suffering this morning.

  243. We thank you for the fact that your church is a spiritual hospital.

  244. We come here not because we have everything together and our lives are all rosy.

  245. We come here because we are broken and those who are needy.

  246. We thank you, dear Father, for your grace.

  247. We thank you for your mercy.

  248. And we thank you that you are the great comforter.

  249. So be very near to those who are in particular need of you this morning.

  250. And we pray for your people.

  251. We pray, Lord, that you would give to your people the joy of the Lord, whatever their circumstances.

  252. That they would have that deep assurance of faith.

  253. That they would have that peace which surpasses all understanding.

  254. We do pray for the communion services coming up this week.

  255. We pray for those who will be leading the services and involved in the services.

  256. We pray that your blessing would be on them.

  257. We pray that you would give to your people an expectation that they would hear from you and not the wisdom of man.

  258. And so work by your Holy Spirit amongst your people this week.

  259. We pray, Heavenly Father.

  260. We pray for those who do not know you.

  261. We pray, Lord God, that you would open eyes.

  262. We pray that you would bring people to the end of themselves.

  263. That they would turn to you and repent of their sins.

  264. We ask these things in Jesus' name and for his sake.

  265. Amen.

  266. Amen.

  267. Okay.

  268. Let's sing again in Psalm 130 on page 421.

  269. Psalm 130 on page 421.

  270. Lord, from the depths to thee I cried.

  271. My voice, Lord, do thou hear.

  272. Unto my supplication's voice give an attentive ear.

  273. Let's stand to sing to God's praise.

  274. Amen.

  275. Lord, from the depths to thee I cried.

  276. My voice, Lord, do thou hear.

  277. Come to my supplication's voice give an attentive ear.

  278. Lord, who shall stand if thou, O Lord, should smile in me with thee.

  279. But yet with thee forgiveness is that fear thou mayest be.

  280. I wait for God.

  281. My soul doth wait.

  282. My hope is in his word.

  283. More than may that for morning watch.

  284. My soul, which part the Lord.

  285. I say more than may that to watch.

  286. The morning light to see.

  287. Let Israel open the Lord.

  288. Lord, for with him mercy is dear.

  289. And plenty as redemption is ever found with him.

  290. And from all his iniquities Israel shall redeem.

  291. Amen.

  292. Well, shall we turn back to the passage that I read earlier, Matthew's Gospel in chapter 28.

  293. And Matthew 28 and verse 18, we read,

  294. And Jesus came and said to them,

  295. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  296. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  297. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  298. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

  299. Well, Billy Graham, the famous evangelist, whatever our thoughts about him,

  300. he had great influence on many, many people.

  301. And at one of his meetings in 1954 at London's Haringey Arena,

  302. someone asked him just before he was going to go out and preach,

  303. somebody asked him,

  304. What would you like to come out of this?

  305. Well, said Billy gravely,

  306. among other things, at least a thousand missionaries.

  307. A thousand missionaries.

  308. And eventually, as we know,

  309. the influence that he was to have on so many people,

  310. he was to realize that and so much more.

  311. The Great Commission.

  312. This is maybe the main passage in the whole Bible,

  313. but it's not the only passage in the Bible

  314. that tells us to go out and tell people about Jesus.

  315. It tells us about mission.

  316. Now, remember the context here is that the resurrected Jesus

  317. is speaking to his disciples.

  318. The disciples and many people have witnessed the power of God.

  319. They have been witnesses to the extraordinary power of God at work.

  320. As Jesus stands there after having died for three days

  321. and risen after three days,

  322. he stands there and says to his disciples,

  323. I want you to go out.

  324. I want you to make my name known.

  325. I want you to make disciples of all nations.

  326. And what we might say the greatest movement in human history,

  327. not might,

  328. this is the greatest movement in human history.

  329. And that movement continues to this day.

  330. As people share about Jesus Christ in all nations,

  331. throughout the whole world,

  332. and as their lives are transformed.

  333. And so we know in the book of Acts,

  334. this ripple effect that goes out into all the world.

  335. As people go out and tell people about Jesus.

  336. And what we need to remind ourselves this morning

  337. is that mission is part of the church's DNA.

  338. Whether we're the free church or whatever church we are,

  339. that mission is part of the DNA.

  340. It is part of who we are,

  341. that this ripple effect goes outside of us.

  342. I want to notice two things,

  343. and maybe a half point after that.

  344. But two main things this morning.

  345. The first one, as we think about mission,

  346. is the authority of mission.

  347. Very, very simple.

  348. But we're taking from the passage here.

  349. What is the authority?

  350. Who is the authority of mission?

  351. The authority of mission is Jesus Christ.

  352. And he uses that word authority.

  353. All authority has been given to me.

  354. So I want to jump very quickly,

  355. just for us to get this idea of the authority of Jesus.

  356. And if you know your Bibles,

  357. you will know John 17,

  358. is that high priestly prayer of Jesus

  359. as he prays to his father.

  360. And he says,

  361. he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said,

  362. Father, the hour has come.

  363. Glorify your son,

  364. that the son may glorify you,

  365. since you have given him authority

  366. over all flesh.

  367. There's the hymn, the words of the hymn,

  368. Rock of Ages,

  369. cleft for me.

  370. There is that solid foundation

  371. of Jesus Christ.

  372. Notice a couple of things.

  373. The unmistakable authority of Jesus Christ.

  374. And we turn to that,

  375. if you know your Bibles,

  376. Daniel 7 is a key chapter in the Old Testament.

  377. And we have the prophecy

  378. of the Messiah who will come into the world.

  379. And we read in Daniel 7 and verse 13,

  380. I saw in the night visions

  381. and behold,

  382. with the clouds of heaven,

  383. there came one like a son of man

  384. and he came to the ancient of days

  385. and was presented before him.

  386. And to him was given dominion,

  387. authority,

  388. and glory,

  389. and a kingdom

  390. that all peoples, nations, and languages

  391. should serve him.

  392. His dominion is an everlasting dominion

  393. which shall not pass away

  394. and his kingdom,

  395. one that shall not be destroyed.

  396. And so,

  397. the unmistakable authority of Jesus.

  398. Notice there,

  399. in Matthew

  400. and in Daniel,

  401. we see that he was given this authority.

  402. That doesn't mean that he didn't have authority before

  403. in the Trinity,

  404. in the Godhead.

  405. But what it does mean

  406. is that in his role as mediator,

  407. he has given this authority

  408. over all people.

  409. And so,

  410. it's an unmistakable authority,

  411. but it is also an unending authority.

  412. We've already seen that in that passage in Daniel.

  413. It is an everlasting authority

  414. as we think about the kingdom of God

  415. and the kingdom of Jesus,

  416. which is everlasting.

  417. It is eternal.

  418. Thinking here about authority,

  419. about the power that Jesus has.

  420. Think for a moment about

  421. the power that there is

  422. in the world.

  423. Chairman Mao Zedong,

  424. the famous dictator,

  425. communist dictator,

  426. he famously said,

  427. power grows

  428. out of the barrel

  429. of a gun.

  430. And Alfred Nobel of Sweden,

  431. he introduced dynamite

  432. to the world

  433. in 1866.

  434. And he called it,

  435. ironically,

  436. he called it security powder.

  437. Isn't that ironic?

  438. And the idea behind it

  439. was to promote peace

  440. and stability across the world.

  441. And so,

  442. there are two versions here

  443. of the power

  444. that is found in the world.

  445. And somebody said this,

  446. from the Babylonian,

  447. Greek,

  448. and Roman empires

  449. through to present tyrannies,

  450. we have come to recognize

  451. that every apparatus of state

  452. dedicated to keeping a people

  453. docile and obedient

  454. to a doctrinaire system

  455. has a limited lifespan.

  456. And all I'm doing here

  457. right now

  458. is I'm comparing

  459. power of the world

  460. to the power of Jesus.

  461. A contrast between

  462. these two things.

  463. And because Christ

  464. is behind mission,

  465. it is a powerful force.

  466. It is the most powerful force

  467. in the history of mankind.

  468. Because he has authority

  469. and because he has power,

  470. it is a powerful force.

  471. Powerful things happen.

  472. Powerful things happen to people.

  473. Lives are transformed

  474. because of the authority

  475. of Jesus.

  476. Think of Central Asia

  477. without naming any countries.

  478. But there are things

  479. happening there

  480. that the people,

  481. that the leaders

  482. in those countries

  483. don't want people

  484. to hear about.

  485. But the gospel is at work

  486. and lives are really transforming

  487. because of who Jesus is.

  488. The gospel is flourishing.

  489. Lives have been transformed.

  490. Many of you know

  491. what I'm talking about here

  492. because your lives

  493. have been transformed.

  494. And so the authority

  495. of mission,

  496. we think of the power

  497. of Jesus.

  498. And if you are a disciple

  499. of Jesus this morning,

  500. if you are a follower

  501. of Jesus Christ,

  502. the reason you are able

  503. to take those moments,

  504. although we always struggle,

  505. don't we,

  506. but take those moments

  507. and boldly share about Jesus

  508. and perhaps take the opportunity

  509. and tell somebody about Jesus,

  510. the reason why you're able

  511. to do that

  512. is because of this power

  513. that Jesus has.

  514. We have the Holy Spirit

  515. inside of us.

  516. And so there is

  517. the authority of mission,

  518. but then we notice secondly

  519. the mandate for mission.

  520. So what are we to do?

  521. What is the church to do?

  522. The mandate is

  523. that you are to go out

  524. and make disciples

  525. of all nations.

  526. It's very simple,

  527. isn't it?

  528. You are to go out

  529. and make disciples

  530. of all nations.

  531. Let's notice a couple of things

  532. again about this mandate.

  533. First of all,

  534. the scope of the mandate,

  535. you are to go to all nations.

  536. I love it.

  537. You are to go to all people groups

  538. and tell people about Jesus.

  539. And we have here

  540. the inclusivity of the gospel.

  541. That simply means

  542. that the gospel message

  543. is for every human being

  544. in the whole world.

  545. The inclusivity of the gospel.

  546. Isaiah 42, 6 says,

  547. I, the Lord,

  548. have called you in righteousness.

  549. I will take hold of your hand.

  550. I will keep you

  551. and make you

  552. to be a covenant

  553. for the people

  554. and a light for the Gentiles.

  555. Another word for nations

  556. is that word Gentiles.

  557. It was, I believe,

  558. the understanding

  559. of David Livingston

  560. when he went out into Africa.

  561. It was the understanding

  562. of Eric Little

  563. after his exploits,

  564. after winning gold.

  565. And he had a call from the Lord

  566. to go to China

  567. and tell people

  568. about Jesus Christ.

  569. It was the understanding

  570. of William Carey

  571. to go into India

  572. and tell people

  573. about Jesus,

  574. to go out

  575. into all parts of the world.

  576. And so they had this understanding

  577. of the message

  578. that the gospel message

  579. is for all people

  580. because he says,

  581. go to all nations

  582. and tell people

  583. of the gospel.

  584. We are in the Black Isle

  585. and we are in Highland Council.

  586. Now, the Highland Council,

  587. the administrative area

  588. of the Highland Council

  589. is very limited.

  590. It's a big area,

  591. but it's very limited.

  592. The administration

  593. takes place

  594. within a certain

  595. geographical area.

  596. They don't do anything

  597. outside of that area.

  598. It is only

  599. in the Highland Council,

  600. in those villages

  601. and cities

  602. within the Highland Council

  603. that that administration

  604. takes place.

  605. The gospel is different.

  606. Mission is different.

  607. We told you

  608. that the mandate

  609. is to go to all nations.

  610. We see it in the Bible.

  611. The psalmist

  612. in Psalm 117,

  613. O praise ye the Lord,

  614. O all you nations.

  615. The Bible tells us

  616. that God would have it,

  617. that all would be saved,

  618. but not all will be saved,

  619. but that all hear

  620. the good news

  621. of Jesus Christ.

  622. And there is the scope.

  623. The scope is to go

  624. to all nations

  625. and then we have

  626. the nature.

  627. What is it

  628. that the church

  629. is to do?

  630. What is

  631. Stornoway Free Church

  632. to do?

  633. Well,

  634. we are to

  635. make disciples.

  636. The original

  637. language there used

  638. basically translates

  639. to

  640. teach

  641. all nations,

  642. to teach

  643. all nations.

  644. Now,

  645. there are two things

  646. that are involved here.

  647. First of all,

  648. to preach the gospel.

  649. And we know that

  650. because Mark tells us

  651. at the end of his gospel

  652. that that is the way

  653. that we make disciples

  654. is that the gospel

  655. is proclaimed.

  656. That that is a call

  657. to people

  658. to repent

  659. of their sins

  660. and to turn away

  661. from self

  662. and turn

  663. to Christ.

  664. And by the way,

  665. there will be some people

  666. who have never,

  667. ever bowed the knee

  668. to Jesus Christ

  669. this morning.

  670. And you need to know

  671. this morning

  672. that you are

  673. separated from God.

  674. And the only thing

  675. that is going to

  676. bring you

  677. into relationship

  678. to God

  679. is to repent

  680. of your sins

  681. and to turn away

  682. from yourself

  683. and to turn

  684. to Jesus Christ.

  685. That is the gospel message.

  686. You are

  687. in danger.

  688. You will be

  689. judged for eternity

  690. if you do not

  691. turn to Jesus.

  692. But the good news

  693. is that through

  694. Jesus Christ,

  695. you can have

  696. a relationship

  697. with the creator

  698. of the whole universe

  699. and receive

  700. all the blessings

  701. that comes

  702. with having

  703. that relationship

  704. with Jesus Christ.

  705. And so that is

  706. a challenge for you

  707. if you do not know

  708. Jesus this morning.

  709. But that's the first thing,

  710. to preach the gospel.

  711. And the second thing

  712. is to baptize.

  713. Baptize.

  714. To go out,

  715. make disciples,

  716. and to baptize.

  717. Now,

  718. what is the

  719. prerequisite

  720. for baptism?

  721. It is faith,

  722. isn't it?

  723. It is faith

  724. in Jesus Christ.

  725. And now we

  726. as a denomination,

  727. this church,

  728. believes in infant

  729. baptism.

  730. But there are

  731. some perhaps

  732. who don't,

  733. who believe

  734. in adult baptism.

  735. That's absolutely fine.

  736. There may be people here

  737. who believe

  738. in adult baptism.

  739. But what is important

  740. is that you are

  741. a follower

  742. of Jesus Christ,

  743. that you are

  744. baptized,

  745. whether as a child

  746. or as an adult,

  747. that you are

  748. baptized.

  749. And that is one

  750. of the two sacraments

  751. that we celebrate.

  752. The Lord's Supper,

  753. which you're going

  754. to be celebrating

  755. next weekend,

  756. and baptism.

  757. And so baptism,

  758. go and make disciples

  759. and baptize

  760. in the name

  761. of the Father

  762. and the Son

  763. and of the Holy Spirit.

  764. The Belgic

  765. confession

  766. about baptism

  767. says,

  768. in this way,

  769. he signifies

  770. to us

  771. that just as water

  772. washes away

  773. the dirt

  774. of the body

  775. when it is poured

  776. on us

  777. and also is seen

  778. on the body

  779. of the baptized

  780. when it is sprinkled

  781. on him,

  782. so too

  783. the blood of Christ

  784. does the same thing

  785. internally

  786. in the soul

  787. by the Holy Spirit.

  788. It washes

  789. and cleanses

  790. from its sins

  791. and transforms us

  792. from being

  793. the children

  794. of wrath

  795. into the children

  796. of God.

  797. Now,

  798. we need to be clear

  799. when we talk

  800. about baptism

  801. that not all

  802. are called

  803. to preach the word,

  804. not all

  805. are called

  806. to administer

  807. sacraments,

  808. but what is

  809. really,

  810. really important

  811. is that we are

  812. all called

  813. to be missionaries.

  814. I love,

  815. actually,

  816. there's a church

  817. in Lewis

  818. with a sign

  819. above the door

  820. as you go

  821. out of the church,

  822. above the door

  823. is the sign

  824. you are about

  825. to enter

  826. a mission field.

  827. You are about

  828. to enter

  829. a mission field.

  830. I love that.

  831. I love that

  832. because it takes away

  833. this fallacy,

  834. this idea

  835. that mission

  836. takes place

  837. only in places

  838. like India.

  839. and actually

  840. what we are

  841. reminded this morning

  842. is that mission

  843. takes place

  844. on your doorstep.

  845. What are some

  846. of the things

  847. that we can do?

  848. We can pray

  849. for mission.

  850. I'm pretty sure

  851. that you do that

  852. in this church.

  853. In fact,

  854. I know you do.

  855. you pray

  856. for souls

  857. to be converted.

  858. You pray

  859. for missionaries

  860. on the mission field.

  861. So you can pray.

  862. You can get involved

  863. with mission.

  864. You can support

  865. mission

  866. financially.

  867. And maybe God

  868. is placing

  869. on your heart

  870. this morning

  871. a call

  872. to go

  873. and tell people

  874. about Jesus Christ.

  875. Maybe this is

  876. just one of the

  877. various ways

  878. he is knocking

  879. at your door

  880. on your heart

  881. for you

  882. to do something

  883. about the mandate

  884. that has been

  885. given to his children

  886. to tell people

  887. about Jesus Christ.

  888. Now,

  889. we need to be

  890. very aware

  891. that not all of us

  892. are called

  893. to go to India

  894. or to China

  895. or to Africa

  896. or to the mainland

  897. and actually

  898. verbally

  899. tell people

  900. about Jesus

  901. although we are

  902. all to

  903. always be ready

  904. to give a reason

  905. for the hope

  906. that is inside of us.

  907. Hopefully,

  908. there's something

  909. that is bubbling

  910. out of us

  911. because of what

  912. Christ has done

  913. for us

  914. on the cross.

  915. But there are

  916. various ways

  917. in which we

  918. can get involved.

  919. I love the

  920. missionary organization

  921. MAF,

  922. Mission Aviation

  923. Fellowship.

  924. And what comes

  925. from the work

  926. of MAF

  927. is that

  928. mission

  929. is not

  930. necessarily

  931. speaking on

  932. the street

  933. corner

  934. or on a church

  935. and actually

  936. verbally telling

  937. people about Jesus.

  938. You can go

  939. if you're a pilot

  940. or a mechanic

  941. or if you have

  942. administrative skills

  943. or you are good

  944. with technology.

  945. We have a family

  946. in our church

  947. in Fort Rose

  948. who were

  949. in Papua New Guinea

  950. and he was

  951. a specialist

  952. in IT

  953. and he was

  954. supporting

  955. the work

  956. of Wycliffe

  957. with his skills

  958. in technology.

  959. And I think

  960. when we think

  961. about mission

  962. I think it's

  963. good for us

  964. to dream

  965. to dream

  966. a dream

  967. of what

  968. the Lord

  969. can do

  970. through

  971. a bunch

  972. of ordinary

  973. people

  974. like you

  975. and I.

  976. And so let's

  977. dream for a moment.

  978. Imagine

  979. the highlands

  980. and islands

  981. and that's

  982. the Lord's

  983. people

  984. evangelicals

  985. bought into

  986. the priority

  987. of mission.

  988. The priority

  989. of telling

  990. people

  991. about

  992. Jesus

  993. Christ

  994. and increasingly

  995. became

  996. burdened

  997. to either

  998. pray

  999. or give

  1000. financially

  1001. or be

  1002. involved

  1003. in some

  1004. way

  1005. even

  1006. coming

  1007. to the

  1008. elders

  1009. and say

  1010. you know

  1011. I was

  1012. really

  1013. challenged

  1014. by what

  1015. was said

  1016. there

  1017. about

  1018. mission.

  1019. Is there

  1020. some way

  1021. that I

  1022. can serve

  1023. the church

  1024. in this

  1025. field?

  1026. Are there

  1027. missionaries

  1028. that you

  1029. as a church

  1030. support?

  1031. You know

  1032. I'd actually

  1033. like to be

  1034. involved

  1035. with that

  1036. because I

  1037. see that

  1038. it is

  1039. biblical.

  1040. I see

  1041. that the

  1042. Lord Jesus

  1043. Christ

  1044. has given

  1045. us the

  1046. mandate

  1047. to do

  1048. that we

  1049. became

  1050. burdened

  1051. to equip

  1052. people

  1053. for

  1054. mission.

  1055. In

  1056. Fort Rose

  1057. we're getting

  1058. really excited

  1059. about the

  1060. first holiday

  1061. club that

  1062. we're having

  1063. in a long

  1064. time there

  1065. on that

  1066. section of

  1067. the Black

  1068. Isle and

  1069. we're having

  1070. a holiday

  1071. club in

  1072. early August.

  1073. I wonder

  1074. if you can

  1075. pray for

  1076. that.

  1077. And what

  1078. I'm saying

  1079. to our

  1080. people is

  1081. just imagine

  1082. for a

  1083. moment

  1084. 30

  1085. young

  1086. primary

  1087. school

  1088. kids

  1089. who

  1090. have

  1091. never

  1092. darkened

  1093. the

  1094. door

  1095. of

  1096. a

  1097. church

  1098. who

  1099. will

  1100. hear

  1101. about

  1102. Jesus

  1103. Christ

  1104. for the

  1105. first

  1106. times

  1107. in

  1108. their

  1109. lives.

  1110. I wonder

  1111. if you can

  1112. pray for

  1113. that

  1114. with us

  1115. and pray

  1116. for the

  1117. organization

  1118. and pray

  1119. for that

  1120. holiday

  1121. club.

  1122. You're a

  1123. big

  1124. congregation

  1125. and there

  1126. are all

  1127. sorts of

  1128. things going

  1129. on in

  1130. this

  1131. congregation.

  1132. Wonderful.

  1133. Wonderful.

  1134. Because we're

  1135. doing what

  1136. we're called

  1137. to do.

  1138. Now there

  1139. is a lot

  1140. more to

  1141. this passage

  1142. which I'll

  1143. say in

  1144. just a

  1145. moment.

  1146. Go and

  1147. make

  1148. disciples of

  1149. all nations.

  1150. Baptize

  1151. them.

  1152. But also

  1153. to teach

  1154. them what

  1155. I have

  1156. taught you.

  1157. So discipleship

  1158. comes into

  1159. it as well.

  1160. And so we've

  1161. seen the

  1162. authority of

  1163. mission.

  1164. We've seen

  1165. the mandate

  1166. of mission.

  1167. But we need

  1168. to see as

  1169. well the

  1170. extension of

  1171. mission if

  1172. you like.

  1173. I'm just

  1174. using that

  1175. as a way

  1176. to describe

  1177. discipleship.

  1178. We become

  1179. disciples of

  1180. Jesus Christ

  1181. when we

  1182. are new

  1183. creations.

  1184. When we

  1185. are being

  1186. transformed by

  1187. God the

  1188. Holy Spirit.

  1189. We then

  1190. become

  1191. disciples and

  1192. we need to

  1193. be discipling

  1194. each other

  1195. and growing

  1196. in our

  1197. faith.

  1198. And so we

  1199. can't talk

  1200. about the

  1201. great commission

  1202. without mentioning

  1203. the importance

  1204. of discipleship.

  1205. Verse 20

  1206. tells us what

  1207. it is.

  1208. Teach them

  1209. to observe

  1210. all that I

  1211. have commanded

  1212. you and

  1213. behold I

  1214. am with you

  1215. always to

  1216. the end

  1217. of the

  1218. age.

  1219. The

  1220. authority of

  1221. mission,

  1222. the mandate

  1223. for mission,

  1224. and the

  1225. extension

  1226. of mission.

  1227. Again,

  1228. let's dream

  1229. just for a

  1230. moment.

  1231. A dream

  1232. that ETS,

  1233. the college

  1234. in Edinburgh,

  1235. continues to

  1236. equip people

  1237. to minister

  1238. in Scotland

  1239. and all

  1240. over the

  1241. world.

  1242. And that

  1243. ripple effect

  1244. of the

  1245. great commission

  1246. as we see

  1247. in Acts

  1248. continues to

  1249. go out.

  1250. And we

  1251. in a very

  1252. small way

  1253. are involved

  1254. with that.

  1255. Pray for

  1256. ETS and

  1257. the work

  1258. of ETS

  1259. as men

  1260. are being

  1261. equipped to

  1262. lead the

  1263. church and

  1264. to go.

  1265. Men and

  1266. women are

  1267. being equipped

  1268. to go and

  1269. tell people

  1270. about Jesus

  1271. Christ in

  1272. Scotland and

  1273. to the ends

  1274. of the

  1275. world.

  1276. Dream just

  1277. for a

  1278. moment that

  1279. this congregation

  1280. becomes

  1281. increasingly

  1282. burdened to

  1283. obey the

  1284. great commission

  1285. and tell

  1286. people about

  1287. Jesus Christ.

  1288. Dream just

  1289. for a

  1290. moment that

  1291. in ten

  1292. years time

  1293. people would

  1294. look at

  1295. this congregation

  1296. and see

  1297. that the

  1298. Lord has

  1299. blessed this

  1300. congregation

  1301. and they

  1302. have grabbed

  1303. that burden

  1304. to go out

  1305. into the

  1306. world

  1307. with the

  1308. good news

  1309. and that

  1310. you would

  1311. continue to

  1312. do that

  1313. and as

  1314. God's word

  1315. is preached

  1316. here that

  1317. as you are

  1318. equipped to

  1319. be disciples

  1320. you are also

  1321. equipped to

  1322. tell people

  1323. about Jesus

  1324. the great

  1325. ripple effect

  1326. of the

  1327. gospel.

  1328. Let me

  1329. finish

  1330. going back

  1331. to Billy

  1332. Graham

  1333. and there

  1334. is an

  1335. organization

  1336. called

  1337. African

  1338. Enterprise

  1339. and African

  1340. Enterprise

  1341. engages

  1342. in evangelism

  1343. and relief

  1344. work in the

  1345. great cities

  1346. of Africa.

  1347. Now African

  1348. Enterprise

  1349. is truly

  1350. African

  1351. in being

  1352. led and

  1353. African

  1354. inspired

  1355. but African

  1356. Enterprise

  1357. began in

  1358. Madison Square

  1359. Gardens with

  1360. a young

  1361. white South

  1362. African by

  1363. the name

  1364. of Michael

  1365. Cassidy.

  1366. Michael

  1367. Cassidy was

  1368. under the

  1369. preaching of

  1370. the gospel

  1371. and he was

  1372. fired up

  1373. and he

  1374. sensed a

  1375. call by the

  1376. Lord to

  1377. go into

  1378. Africa and

  1379. evangelize the

  1380. cities of

  1381. Africa.

  1382. And there

  1383. are a couple

  1384. of lessons

  1385. in that for

  1386. us this

  1387. morning as

  1388. we finish

  1389. off.

  1390. The first

  1391. lesson is

  1392. this, that

  1393. the preaching

  1394. of the

  1395. gospel touches

  1396. lives and

  1397. goes throughout

  1398. the world.

  1399. It is the

  1400. greatest human

  1401. movement in

  1402. human history

  1403. and the most

  1404. powerful human

  1405. movement in

  1406. human history.

  1407. And so that's

  1408. what happens

  1409. when people

  1410. tell people

  1411. about Jesus,

  1412. when people

  1413. gossip the

  1414. gospel to

  1415. their neighbors

  1416. and when the

  1417. gospel is

  1418. preached in

  1419. a church like

  1420. this.

  1421. And so there

  1422. is that ripple

  1423. effect.

  1424. But another

  1425. lesson is this,

  1426. that there is

  1427. a whole army,

  1428. more than an

  1429. army, of

  1430. people who

  1431. are not

  1432. recognized like

  1433. Billy Graham

  1434. or Michael

  1435. Cassidy or

  1436. Callum

  1437. Motto Smith

  1438. or James

  1439. McKeever

  1440. who are

  1441. God's

  1442. soldiers

  1443. who are

  1444. transforming

  1445. lives.

  1446. Again, you

  1447. don't need to

  1448. be a preacher.

  1449. We are all

  1450. the soldiers

  1451. of God who

  1452. have been

  1453. given a

  1454. mandate.

  1455. Whether we

  1456. can give

  1457. ten pounds

  1458. a month

  1459. to mission

  1460. or whether

  1461. we can help

  1462. in administration

  1463. or whether

  1464. we can serve

  1465. in a church

  1466. like this

  1467. whose mandate,

  1468. part of their

  1469. mandate because

  1470. this is a

  1471. biblical church

  1472. to go out

  1473. into all

  1474. the world

  1475. and support

  1476. missionaries

  1477. and do

  1478. something on

  1479. the mission

  1480. field.

  1481. However small

  1482. it is,

  1483. however big

  1484. it is,

  1485. perhaps you

  1486. won't be

  1487. recognized for

  1488. what you do,

  1489. but the Lord

  1490. recognizes you

  1491. and the Lord

  1492. knows what you

  1493. are doing

  1494. and he is

  1495. pleased.

  1496. If we are

  1497. involved with

  1498. mission and

  1499. you will arrive

  1500. hopefully and

  1501. the Lord

  1502. will say,

  1503. well done

  1504. good and

  1505. faithful servant.

  1506. You know,

  1507. the rest of

  1508. the people,

  1509. many people

  1510. didn't know

  1511. what you

  1512. were doing

  1513. but I

  1514. see what

  1515. you're doing.

  1516. Well done

  1517. good and

  1518. faithful servant.

  1519. Let's pray.

  1520. Father, we

  1521. thank you

  1522. for the

  1523. authority of

  1524. mission.

  1525. We thank you

  1526. for Jesus.

  1527. we thank you

  1528. for the

  1529. mandate for

  1530. mission and

  1531. we thank you

  1532. for the

  1533. event which

  1534. allows us

  1535. to tell

  1536. people about

  1537. Jesus.

  1538. We thank you

  1539. for his

  1540. death and

  1541. resurrection on

  1542. the cross and

  1543. we thank you

  1544. for your

  1545. amazing grace

  1546. that you

  1547. poured out on

  1548. your people

  1549. by sending

  1550. him to die

  1551. for our

  1552. sakes.

  1553. Father,

  1554. help us to

  1555. die every

  1556. day to

  1557. ourselves and

  1558. to live

  1559. to Christ

  1560. and bless

  1561. your people.

  1562. Send them

  1563. out to

  1564. serve you

  1565. in whatever

  1566. small ways

  1567. that may be,

  1568. whether it's

  1569. prayer,

  1570. whether it's

  1571. financially,

  1572. or whether

  1573. it's actually

  1574. going.

  1575. Lord,

  1576. equip them

  1577. and send

  1578. them out,

  1579. we pray.

  1580. We ask it

  1581. in Jesus.

  1582. Amen.

  1583. Amen.

  1584. Shall we

  1585. conclude our

  1586. service by

  1587. singing in

  1588. Psalm 126?

  1589. Psalm 126

  1590. and verses

  1591. 126.

  1592. Psalm 126

  1593. on page 171,

  1594. when Zion's

  1595. fortunes God

  1596. restored,

  1597. it was a

  1598. dream come

  1599. true.

  1600. Our mouths

  1601. were then

  1602. with laughter

  1603. filled,

  1604. our tongues

  1605. with songs

  1606. and news.

  1607. Psalm 126

  1608. on page

  1609. 171,

  1610. the man

  1611. who bearing

  1612. seed to

  1613. sow

  1614. goes out

  1615. with tears

  1616. of grief

  1617. will come

  1618. again with

  1619. songs of

  1620. joy

  1621. bearing

  1622. his harvest

  1623. sheaf.

  1624. Let's stand

  1625. to sing

  1626. to God's

  1627. praise.

  1628. song 126

  1629. when Zion's

  1630. fortunes

  1631. got

  1632. restored,

  1633. it

  1634. was a

  1635. dream

  1636. come

  1637. true.

  1638. Our

  1639. lives

  1640. were then

  1641. with

  1642. laughter

  1643. filled,

  1644. our tongues

  1645. with songs

  1646. anew.

  1647. The

  1648. nations

  1649. said

  1650. the

  1651. Lord

  1652. has

  1653. done

  1654. great

  1655. things

  1656. for

  1657. Israel.

  1658. The

  1659. Lord

  1660. did

  1661. mighty

  1662. things

  1663. for

  1664. us

  1665. and

  1666. joy

  1667. our

  1668. hearts

  1669. knew

  1670. well.

  1671. restore

  1672. our

  1673. fortunes

  1674. gracious

  1675. Lord

  1676. like

  1677. streams

  1678. in

  1679. desert

  1680. soil.

  1681. A

  1682. joyful

  1683. harvest

  1684. will

  1685. reward

  1686. the

  1687. weeping

  1688. sowers

  1689. tall.

  1690. The

  1691. man

  1692. who

  1693. bearing

  1694. seed to

  1695. sow

  1696. goes

  1697. out

  1698. with

  1699. tears

  1700. of

  1701. grief

  1702. will

  1703. come

  1704. again

  1705. with

  1706. songs

  1707. of

  1708. joy

  1709. bearing

  1710. his

  1711. harvest

  1712. sheep.

  1713. now to

  1714. him

  1715. who

  1716. is

  1717. able

  1718. to

  1719. keep

  1720. you

  1721. from

  1722. stumbling

  1723. and to

  1724. present

  1725. you

  1726. blameless

  1727. before the

  1728. presence

  1729. of his

  1730. glory

  1731. with

  1732. great

  1733. joy

  1734. to

  1735. the

  1736. only

  1737. God

  1738. our

  1739. Savior

  1740. through

  1741. Jesus

  1742. Christ

  1743. our

  1744. Lord

  1745. be

  1746. glory

  1747. majesty

  1748. dominion

  1749. and

  1750. authority

  1751. before

  1752. all time

  1753. and now

  1754. forever

  1755. Amen

  1756. just

  1757. up

  1758. there

  1759. voy

  1760. voy

  1761. !

  1762. voy
