  7. Upon a ten-stringed instrument make ye sweet melody.

  8. We'll sing to the end of verse 6 to the praise of God together.

  9. Ye righteous in the Lord rejoice.

  10. It comely is unright that upright.

  11. And half a bright men with thankful voice should praise the Lord of might.

  12. Praise God with harp and unto him sing with the psaltery.

  13. A song of the psaltery.

  14. Upon a ten-stringed instrument make ye sweet melody.

  15. A new song to him sing with the psaltery.

  16. A new song to him sing and play with loud noise skillfully.

  17. For righteous God's word.

  18. All his words are done in mercy.

  19. To judgment unto righteousness.

  20. To judgment unto righteousness.

  21. How love he may rest still.

  22. The loving kindness of the Lord.

  23. The air throughout the field.

  24. The heavens by the word of God.

  25. The heavens by the word of God.

  26. In their beginning day.

  27. The heavens by the word of God.

  28. The heavens by the word of God.

  29. The heavens by the word of God.

  30. Their frame did take.

  31. Lord these words remind us this evening.

  32. That we are coming before you.

  33. Creator and sustainer.

  34. Sovereign ruler.

  35. Almighty God.

  36. And so we bow Lord this evening.

  37. We acknowledge you.

  38. We ask that as we join together for this hour of worship.

  39. As we open your word.

  40. And as Lord we spend this time in worship.

  41. We pray that you would draw near to us, Lord, and do us good.

  42. That we pray, that you pray, that you pray,

  43. That you pray, that you pray,

  44. That you pray, that you pray,

  45. That you pray, that you pray,

  46. That you pray,

  47. Lord we spend this time in worship we pray that you would draw near to us Lord and do us good

  48. that we might know the presence of the Holy Spirit here this evening and that he would in our hearts

  49. testify to the wonder and beauty and splendor and depth and richness of your provision toward us in

  50. Christ who has said he will testify of me and so Lord we ask tonight at the outset of this communion

  51. weekend for your blessing upon word and sacrament upon fellowship and singing that you would hear

  52. the prayers of your people and as they offer Lord to you their petitions as they bring to you the

  53. concerns of their heart as they seek the blessing of the Lord upon the cause of Christ here in Stornoway

  54. and across our island Lord be near them bless them keep them we pray and as they spend this time around

  55. your word together tomorrow with Callum and over the weekend with David we pray Lord God that you

  56. would draw near and bless we pray that there would be a real encouragement and a an enriching of spiritual

  57. vitality a depth and a deepening of grace and faith by both word and sacrament being received in faith

  58. Lord we thank you that you deal with us in such a way that we have here in our midst the very word of

  59. life and we bless you that you speak to us and that the word of God continues to do the work of God in

  60. hearts around our island and in their nation across the world this very evening we pray tonight for all

  61. the prayer meetings being held across our island we pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ who will

  62. be meeting just as we are with their Bibles open singing praise to the living God seeking your blessing

  63. the word as it is explained and broken down and Lord we pray that here and all these meetings across

  64. the land it would be to the benefit and blessing of your people that there would be real encouragement

  65. tonight through fellowship and preaching and prayer and praise that as your people worship they would

  66. be prepared Lord to meet you in that place of stillness and then ready to meet the world and tomorrow

  67. and in the next day at times we are so grateful for these Wednesday nights to come together to gather

  68. around the word brothers and sisters in Christ to remind ourselves whose we are and who we are children

  69. of the living God and so Lord as we reflect on these wonderful truths and the vitality of the gospel we

  70. pray for your blessing on your cause in Stornoway be with Calamurdo the elders and deacons the Sunday

  71. school teachers all the activities and groups and plans that go toward making this place a place that is

  72. dedicated to your glory and your praise and honour and Lord may that work reap a great harvest may your

  73. people be enriched and encouraged and built up in the faith and may those who as yet are unconvinced and

  74. unconverted Lord draw them we pray by your grace and in your power may there be conviction of sin in hearts

  75. may eyes be opened to the awfulness of our situation out with Jesus where we would remain under the wrath and

  76. judgment of God and so Lord we pray for the reality of our precariousness to be blessed to many and that

  77. Lord as that work begins may your people come alongside to share a word in season a word of hope a word of grace

  78. and remind those who may seek you of the invitation and summons of Jesus come to me

  79. we are reminded of Philip's example when he spoke to that Ethiopian official he told him the good news

  80. about Jesus and what news it is the son of God who came into this world to seek and to save the lost

  81. he paid a price that we could not pay he stood in a place so that we would not have to experience

  82. separation and darkness and the awfulness of that forsakenness that he felt on that cross

  83. for he tasted that death which was due to fallen sinners and so we pray Lord that that

  84. atoning sacrifice would be ever more precious to us in the days ahead and that we would in our own way

  85. in time figure out ways to share and explain and describe the finished work of Christ in truthfulness

  86. in love with a sense of awe and wonder and that we Lord as people who have come to know the Lord as our

  87. saviour may our commitment to him in your grace and mercy become convincing to those around us for we know

  88. Lord they watch our lives they they read our decisions they watch our conduct may our conduct be

  89. as we as we are called to be holy may our conduct be one a pattern of reverence and awe that we might

  90. have within us and out with us and about us a fear of the Lord that would speak to those around we pray

  91. Lord then your blessing on your word tonight on the upcoming communion services across our island

  92. and those as they preach Lord may they be endowed with the spirit from on high to show forth the praises

  93. of Christ to declare a risen saviour who was dead and now is alive Lord we commit to you the cares and

  94. concerns of our hearts tonight we pray for the congregation at this time of vacancy may they Lord be blessed to

  95. engage with the work may they be encouraged to engage with the work and may you bless Lord their endeavours

  96. in the cause of Christ at this time we seek your leading in these things as in all things and we pray

  97. Lord that you would make your way known to the congregation here and to each one who has such a

  98. concern for the cause that this congregation has stood for all these years and generations Lord we

  99. require and need and plead for your blessing for without the Lord the labour is in vain and so we

  100. we express Lord and acknowledge our dependence and we seek your blessing and we ask the forgiveness of

  101. our sin and everything we do we ask in Jesus name amen

  102. we'll return to sing psalms this evening we'll sing from psalm 34 and the beginning of the psalm psalm 34 and

  103. sing psalms we're going to sing to verse 9 to the tune Jackson at all times I will bless the Lord

  104. I'll praise him with my voice because I glory in the Lord let troubled souls rejoice together let us

  105. praise the Lord exalt his name with me I sought the Lord his answer came from fears he set me free

  108. at all times I will bless the Lord I'll praise him with my voice because I glory in the Lord let troubled souls rejoice

  115. From him deliver and save.

  116. The angel of the Lord surrounds and guards continually.

  117. All those who fear and honor him, he sets his feet.

  118. The angel of the Lord is good, who just in him is blessed.

  119. O fear the Lord, you saints with me, you will not be oppressed.

  120. I will turn this evening together in our Bibles to the first letter of Peter.

  121. 1 Peter, reading in chapter 1.

  122. 1 Peter, chapter 1, where we find the apostle fulfilling the commission given by the Lord

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  123. to feed the Lord's people, to teach the Lord's people and encourage the Lord's people.

  124. And he writes to the elect exiles of the dispersion scattered across the Roman Empire

  125. according to the foreknowledge of God the Father.

  126. And he writes and wishes grace and peace being multiplied to them.

  127. He speaks then about our being born again to a living hope.

  128. And having said something about that, we'll read from verse 13,

  129. where he links into what he's just said about the living hope that belongs to every Christian.

  130. Therefore, preparing your minds for action and being sober-minded,

  131. set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  132. 1 Peter, chapter 1, verse 13.

    1 Peter 1:13

  133. 1 Peter, chapter 1, verse 13.

    1 Peter 1:13

  134. Sincere, brotherly love.

  135. Love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again,

  136. not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God.

  137. For all flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass.

  138. The grass withers and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.

  139. And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

  140. May the Lord bless his word to our hearts this evening.

  141. We'll think about that passage in a few moments together.

  142. First of all, we'll sing again from Sing Psalm, Psalm 25.

  143. Psalm 25, singing from verse 8.

  144. And we'll sing to verse 15, to the tune Rockingham.

  145. Because the Lord is just and good, he shows his paths to all who stray.

  146. He guides the meek in what is right and teaches them his holy way.

  147. We'll sing to verse 15 together to God's praise.

  148. Because the Lord is just and good, he shows his paths to all who stray.

  149. He guides the meek in what is right and teaches them his holy way.

  150. He guides the meek in what is right and teaches them his holy way.

  151. My great iniquity.

  152. But then I'm going to clear the Lord.

  153. He'll teach to them the chosen way.

  154. That thing, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you

  155. and deep will share.

  156. My eyes are always on the Lord.

  157. He'll be my feet from every stair.

  158. Well, as we turn to 1 Peter again in chapter 1,

  159. to think about something we've just sung about there

  160. that speaks of there in verse 15,

  161. my eyes are always on the Lord.

  162. What a great description and definition that is of the Christian life.

  163. My eyes are always on the Lord.

  164. We'll bow in prayer for a few moments together.

  165. Lord, that our eyes would always be fixed on you,

  166. that we would heed the apostle's teaching

  167. as he feeds the church through his apostolic writings

  168. that have been blessed to our hearts down through the years.

  169. We thank you, Lord, that the scriptures principally teach

  170. what we are to believe concerning God

  171. and the duty you require of us.

  172. And so, Lord, as we take to heart your word,

  173. we pray that your word would do its work in our hearts.

  174. We ask, Lord, for understanding,

  175. for insight, wisdom, patience, grace,

  176. that we might apply to ourselves

  177. what it is you would have us learn day by day

  178. as we open our Bibles,

  179. be it in public as it is this evening

  180. or in private, Lord, we pray

  181. that we might know your closeness

  182. and have an eye to your glory

  183. and have a desire,

  184. a burning desire,

  185. to serve and honour you.

  186. Lord, take the glory to your name here this evening,

  187. we pray in Jesus' precious name.

  188. Amen.

  189. Well, in 1 Peter in chapter 1,

  190. precious words written with a very pastoral heart.

  191. Peter fulfills the commission given by Jesus

  192. that day on the beach when he said,

  193. feed my lambs.

  194. And here we find him doing just that,

  195. wishing grace and peace

  196. to be multiplied to his readers.

  197. And as he goes on,

  198. we'll find in the passage we read,

  199. hopefully this evening,

  200. that at the heart of what the New Testament

  201. reveals to us all

  202. is that when we come to Jesus

  203. in repentance and faith,

  204. when we respond as the Bible urges us to,

  205. when we respond as the Spirit summons us to

  206. and come to God's appointed means of salvation,

  207. his Son, the Lord Jesus,

  208. a change of heart is effected.

  209. And that's where Peter is in verse 3.

  210. According to his great mercy,

  211. he has caused us to be born again

  212. to a living hope.

  213. He's immediately reminding these Christians,

  214. many of whom were under the cosh,

  215. struggling,

  216. finding things hard,

  217. that they needed to remember

  218. or be reminded

  219. who they were and whose they were.

  220. And having mentioned that

  221. at the beginning of the chapter,

  222. we find him doing it again in verse 23.

  223. Since you have been born again,

  224. not of perishable seed,

  225. but of imperishable

  226. through the living word of God,

  227. he's reminding us tonight

  228. who we are and whose we are,

  229. that there's been a change of heart.

  230. This new birth has been effected

  231. through the grace of God

  232. and by the application of the Holy Spirit.

  233. And now there's been a change of status.

  234. Verse 4,

  235. you have now been born again

  236. to a living hope,

  237. an inheritance

  238. that is imperishable,

  239. undefiled,

  240. unfading,

  241. being kept in heaven for you.

  242. This is wonderful stuff

  243. as Peter begins to draw out

  244. the change of heart

  245. and its implications.

  246. It's not just a change of heart

  247. because of the change of heart,

  248. there's a change of status.

  249. This inheritance is kept for you.

  250. So brothers and sisters in Christ,

  251. tonight we are being reminded

  252. by the word

  253. that our standing before God changes,

  254. our focus on life changes,

  255. our eternal destination changes

  256. because of what the Lord has done

  257. for us and in us

  258. and through his son,

  259. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  260. It's a wonderful flow of language

  261. that sets before us tonight,

  262. this change of heart,

  263. this eternal destination,

  264. the standing.

  265. It's ours

  266. because of Christ Jesus,

  267. our Lord and Saviour.

  268. And that is made very clear

  269. in verse 19

  270. because all of this hinges on what?

  271. the precious blood of Christ.

  272. The precious blood of Christ.

  273. As with Peter,

  274. so Paul,

  275. the two great teaching apostles

  276. in their writing ministry

  277. make the same emphasis.

  278. You know well the words of Ephesians 2,

  279. so famous and precious to Christians

  280. down through the generations.

  281. Once you were separated from Christ,

  282. alienated,

  283. strangers to the covenants of promise,

  284. having no hope

  285. and without God.

  286. But now,

  287. in Christ Jesus,

  288. you who once were far off

  289. have been brought near

  290. by the blood of Christ.

  291. And in his letter to the Colossians,

  292. the same emphasis,

  293. he has delivered us

  294. from the domain of darkness

  295. and transferred us

  296. to the kingdom of his beloved son

  297. in whom we have redemption,

  298. the forgiveness of sins.

  299. It's all about who Christ is

  300. and what Christ has done.

  301. And so Peter writes

  302. to remind and encourage Christians

  303. of this great reality

  304. using the same powerful imagery

  305. and language as Paul

  306. and in so doing,

  307. he places at the centre of it all

  308. as Paul does

  309. the precious blood of Christ.

  310. Our change of heart

  311. and the resultant fellowship

  312. and status

  313. and the eternal destination,

  314. all these changes

  315. that we can think through

  316. and reflect on,

  317. it all flows from

  318. and are guaranteed by

  319. the precious blood of Christ.

  320. That is what we have been ransomed with.

  321. Knowing that you were ransomed

  322. from the futile ways

  323. in verse 18,

  324. inherited from your forefathers,

  325. not with perishable things

  326. such as silver and gold.

  327. The world didn't do this.

  328. Religion didn't do this.

  329. The apostles didn't do this.

  330. The temple didn't do this.

  331. The sacrificial system,

  332. the Aaronic priesthood,

  333. none of these things

  334. have done this for you,

  335. Christian friend.

  336. But nothing other

  337. than the precious blood of Christ,

  338. like that of a lamb

  339. without blemish or spot.

  340. And so tonight,

  341. as we think about these things,

  342. I want to reflect on you

  343. with the centrality

  344. of the blood of Christ

  345. and the resultant

  346. Christian way of life

  347. that flows from this.

  348. Our fellowship,

  349. our worship,

  350. the very character

  351. that defines us,

  352. our conduct,

  353. which is mentioned here

  354. twice in this passage,

  355. all flows from

  356. an acknowledgement

  357. and a deep,

  358. growing personal awareness

  359. of our ransom price

  360. being the blood of Jesus.

  361. Many hymns have been written

  362. to try and capture this.

  363. One of the more famous ones.

  364. What can wash away my sin?

  365. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  366. What can make me whole again?

  367. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  368. Oh, precious is the flow

  369. that makes me white as snow.

  370. No other fount I know.

  371. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

  372. And this is the heartbeat

  373. of the New Testament.

  374. The very pulse of every congregation

  375. that names the name of Jesus,

  376. that holds forth his praises.

  377. It's all about the blood of Jesus,

  378. which cleanses us

  379. from all unrighteousness.

  380. We profess our faith

  381. and hope to be in him

  382. and in him alone.

  383. And so we have this

  384. born again to a living hope

  385. flowing straight into a passage

  386. that says called to be holy.

  387. So here's the implications

  388. of this wonderful reality.

  389. The precious blood of Jesus Christ

  390. that makes us,

  391. washes away our sin

  392. and makes us whole again.

  393. There's consequences.

  394. There's an impact.

  395. There's a result.

  396. The Christian way of life.

  397. There's a few things

  398. to say about it this evening

  399. as we spend a little bit

  400. of time together.

  401. Verse 13 says,

  402. Therefore,

  403. preparing your minds for action

  404. and being sober-minded,

  405. set your hope fully

  406. on the grace

  407. that will be brought to you

  408. at the revelation

  409. of Jesus Christ.

  410. This Christian way of life

  411. has the characteristic

  412. of preparation.

  413. Preparing your minds

  414. for action.

  415. Now this is not a

  416. dodgy, weak link

  417. to try and force in the word

  418. preparatory.

  419. It's at the heart

  420. of the characteristics

  421. that are listed

  422. in the Christian way of life.

  423. Preparation.

  424. Preparing your minds

  425. for action.

  426. Being ready.

  427. This is a call

  428. to be prepared

  429. and set your minds

  430. to exert yourself.

  431. It's almost as if

  432. the picture is

  433. of the athlete

  434. in the blocks

  435. waiting for the starter's gun.

  436. Or you're fixing

  437. your seatbelt.

  438. You're ready to

  439. rev the engine

  440. and go,

  441. let the handbrake off.

  442. It's about this being ready

  443. to go.

  444. But to go where?

  445. To do what?

  446. Preparing your minds

  447. for action

  448. and being sober minded.

  449. Clear the decks.

  450. Clear the thoughts.

  451. Clear the attention.

  452. Clear the focus.

  453. And set your hope fully

  454. on the grace

  455. that will be brought to you

  456. at the revelation

  457. of Jesus Christ.

  458. And so we reflect

  459. on who Jesus is

  460. and what he's done

  461. for us.

  462. And the precious blood

  463. of Jesus

  464. that washes our sins away

  465. and makes us

  466. right and whole

  467. again.

  468. And as we commit ourselves

  469. to the serious

  470. sustained thinking,

  471. this is how we begin

  472. to achieve

  473. a clearly committed

  474. Christ-like

  475. manner

  476. or Christ-like

  477. living.

  478. So as we apply it,

  479. the more we know him,

  480. the more we study,

  481. the more we rely on him,

  482. the more we learn about him,

  483. the more we love him,

  484. the more we trust him,

  485. the more evident

  486. it will become

  487. that we belong to him.

  488. That we are his

  489. and he is ours.

  490. And that will be made

  491. very evident

  492. this Sunday morning

  493. as you take your place

  494. at his table.

  495. You go there

  496. on his summons.

  497. You go there

  498. called.

  499. You go there

  500. because in his love

  501. he has prepared

  502. a feast for you there.

  503. And he sees

  504. by his word

  505. in his spirit

  506. through grace

  507. come

  508. for all things

  509. are now ready.

  510. We've probably all

  511. been in a position

  512. where we've heard

  513. that summons

  514. and our hearts

  515. have almost burst

  516. with anticipation,

  517. our love overflowing

  518. and then suddenly

  519. the focus shifts

  520. and we come away

  521. from our Lord's

  522. finished work

  523. and remember

  524. our sin

  525. and our weakness

  526. and our failings

  527. and our foibles

  528. and our faults.

  529. And we say

  530. I can't go there.

  531. That's for holy people.

  532. Good people.

  533. People better than me.

  534. If they knew my heart,

  535. if they knew my mind,

  536. if they knew

  537. the way my imagination works,

  538. they would never be,

  539. they would never allow me

  540. near that table.

  541. But friend,

  542. it's not your sense

  543. of righteousness

  544. that brings you

  545. to the table.

  546. It is,

  547. the words of verse 19,

  548. your ransom price

  549. is the precious blood

  550. of Christ

  551. shed

  552. for you,

  553. shed for me.

  554. Because in and of ourselves,

  555. lost,

  556. destitute,

  557. hopeless,

  558. helpless,

  559. strangers

  560. to the commonwealth

  561. of Israel,

  562. go back to the language

  563. of Ephesians 2,

  564. once you were separated

  565. from Christ,

  566. alienated,

  567. strangers to the covenants

  568. of promise,

  569. having no hope

  570. and without God.

  571. But,

  572. now,

  573. in Christ Jesus,

  574. you who once

  575. were far off

  576. have been brought near

  577. by the blood of Christ.

  578. And it's having been

  579. brought near,

  580. we hear him say,

  581. having come to me

  582. in faith,

  583. sit at my table.

  584. I have a feast

  585. for you.

  586. And so,

  587. the Christian way of life

  588. has about it

  589. a sense of preparation.

  590. And as we prepare

  591. and as we set our minds

  592. on these things,

  593. as we focus

  594. and study

  595. and reflect

  596. and spend time

  597. in fellowship

  598. and listen to the word

  599. and allow the word

  600. to impact us

  601. and change us

  602. from the inside out,

  603. and as we set our minds

  604. on things that are above

  605. and realise

  606. and understand,

  607. we are hidden in Christ.

  608. The language

  609. of the New Testament

  610. is wonderful.

  611. Set your hope

  612. fully on the grace

  613. that will be brought to you.

  614. We are his.

  615. And look what he says

  616. as you think this through.

  617. As obedient children,

  618. do not be conformed

  619. to the passions

  620. of your former ignorance

  621. where the devil

  622. wants us looking,

  623. especially at communion weekend.

  624. He doesn't want us

  625. focusing on the table

  626. and the feast

  627. and the preparation

  628. and the lavishness

  629. of the grace of our Lord.

  630. He doesn't want us

  631. thinking of his forsakenness

  632. for us,

  633. paying our price

  634. that we could not pay,

  635. going to that cross,

  636. that darkness,

  637. that awful judgment

  638. that he experienced

  639. so that we might have life

  640. and forgiveness.

  641. He wants us thinking

  642. about our weakness,

  643. our sin.

  644. He wants us on the edge

  645. of things.

  646. He wants us fragile.

  647. He wants us brittle.

  648. He doesn't want us

  649. at the table

  650. because there's a feast there.

  651. There's grace there.

  652. There's strength there.

  653. And we go there

  654. as obedient children.

  655. Do not be conformed

  656. to the passions

  657. of your former ignorance.

  658. But as he who called you

  659. is holy,

  660. you will also be holy

  661. in all your conduct.

  662. And so we are to be obedient

  663. and we are to be clear-minded.

  664. We are to fix our attention

  665. on our Lord and Saviour.

  666. I want to share with you

  667. a wonderful saying,

  668. part of the writings

  669. of the famous Oswald Chambers.

  670. It's a saying I come back

  671. to a number of occasions,

  672. especially recently,

  673. because it does a lot

  674. in terms of clearing

  675. the ground here,

  676. making us just reflect

  677. on what Peter is saying here

  678. as in many other passages.

  679. Oswald Chambers,

  680. who had such a remarkable life

  681. and achieved so much

  682. in a relatively short time,

  683. he wrote this,

  684. shut out every other consideration

  685. and keep yourself before God

  686. for this one thing only,

  687. my utmost for his highest.

  688. I am determined

  689. to be absolutely

  690. and entirely for him

  691. and for him alone.

  692. That, friends,

  693. is a wonderful summary

  694. of the Christian way of life.

  695. We've sung there

  696. in Psalm 25,

  697. For your name's sake,

  698. O Lord my God,

  699. forgive my great iniquity,

  700. my eyes are always on the Lord.

  701. He'll free my feet

  702. from every snare.

  703. As we keep our eyes

  704. fixed on the Lord.

  705. So we take Chambers'

  706. resolution to heart

  707. and say,

  708. well,

  709. if Oswald Chambers,

  710. in 1919 or so,

  711. or 1915 perhaps,

  712. when he wrote these words,

  713. I am determined

  714. to be absolutely

  715. and entirely for him

  716. and for him alone.

  717. Go ye and do likewise.

  718. Could very much apply there.

  719. As we look at

  720. the Christian way of life

  721. and the preparation

  722. that we're called

  723. to engage in,

  724. how do we apply it

  725. ourselves?

  726. The diligent use

  727. of the outward means

  728. of grace.

  729. Famous phrase used

  730. in the Shorter Catechism.

  731. The word,

  732. sacraments and prayer.

  733. Being in fellowship,

  734. being in worship,

  735. being in the word,

  736. being in prayer,

  737. communicating at the table

  738. with our Lord and Saviour,

  739. receiving the grace

  740. and nourishment

  741. and blessing

  742. from that feast.

  743. Obediently,

  744. in humility

  745. and dependence upon him,

  746. we make diligent use

  747. of the outward means

  748. of grace,

  749. so foundational

  750. to our Christian way

  751. of life.

  752. So there's preparation here.

  753. Secondly,

  754. we'll go through the passage

  755. in verse 15

  756. and again in verse 17,

  757. we'll see

  758. there's progress here.

  759. As ye who called you

  760. as holy,

  761. you also be holy

  762. in all your conduct.

  763. And then we go down

  764. into verse 17 again

  765. and we see the same emphasis.

  766. If you call on him

  767. as father,

  768. who judges impartially

  769. according to each one's deeds,

  770. conduct yourselves

  771. with fear

  772. throughout

  773. the time of your exile.

  774. You see,

  775. with Peter,

  776. it's not all deep theology.

  777. Same with Paul.

  778. They don't just cram

  779. theological realities

  780. into a letter

  781. and hope for the best.

  782. They say there's an outlet

  783. and there's a consequence

  784. and a result

  785. for all this theology.

  786. It changes us

  787. and it is seen

  788. in our progress.

  789. The word we have here

  790. twice used is

  791. conduct.

  792. You also be holy

  793. in all your conduct

  794. and conduct yourselves

  795. with fear

  796. throughout the time

  797. of your exile.

  798. And so that there's

  799. progress here.

  800. We're to be holy.

  801. There's to be something

  802. about the separateness

  803. of God himself

  804. and his being holy,

  805. his setting us apart.

  806. We've been set apart

  807. by God

  808. and for God.

  809. But also,

  810. this separateness

  811. has to have

  812. as its nature

  813. or characteristic

  814. a fearfulness.

  815. You see,

  816. conduct yourself

  817. with fear

  818. throughout the time

  819. of your exile.

  820. That's a word

  821. that speaks of

  822. a sense of awe,

  823. a sense of wonder,

  824. a sense of adoration.

  825. not timidity

  826. and not being afraid

  827. but a sense of joy

  828. is here

  829. that we would know

  830. our God

  831. and what he's done

  832. for us

  833. that would impact us

  834. so powerfully

  835. that our conduct

  836. would reflect

  837. our understanding.

  838. Now we're okay

  839. in the minds

  840. because we've followed

  841. the first example,

  842. we've prepared

  843. our minds for action,

  844. we're sober-minded,

  845. we're setting our hope

  846. fully in the grace

  847. that will be revealed

  848. to us when Christ says

  849. come,

  850. come to me.

  851. Well done,

  852. good and faithful servant.

  853. That is to come.

  854. But God willing

  855. and unless he comes back

  856. before Sunday,

  857. the next summons

  858. you're going to have

  859. from him

  860. is to come to his table

  861. and where we go

  862. as obedient children.

  863. And so we're making progress.

  864. It's all about

  865. their conduct

  866. becoming more and more

  867. Christ-like

  868. and less and less

  869. worldly.

  870. and the more

  871. we die to self

  872. and die to sin

  873. and die to the world,

  874. the more our conduct

  875. will reflect

  876. the light of the gospel

  877. and the nature

  878. and character

  879. of our loving

  880. Heavenly Father

  881. and the impact

  882. of faith

  883. in his Son.

  884. That's what people

  885. see in us.

  886. That's what they hear.

  887. That's what the world

  888. is watching for

  889. and you know

  890. they're watching.

  891. Go to the workplace,

  892. you know they're watching.

  893. You know they're listening.

  894. They want to see you

  895. trip and fall

  896. and make mistakes

  897. and they'll be on you

  898. like a rash.

  899. Lots of them are like that

  900. wanting to see

  901. how serious you are

  902. about your commitment,

  903. your conviction,

  904. your confession.

  905. Well let them see.

  906. Let them hear.

  907. Let them understand

  908. through your being prepared,

  909. through your mind

  910. being ready

  911. and set

  912. for action,

  913. being prepared

  914. to always give a reason

  915. for the hope

  916. you have within you

  917. and then

  918. let your hope

  919. be seen

  920. in how you conduct

  921. yourself.

  922. So this passage,

  923. this section,

  924. this language,

  925. it's about growth

  926. in the Lord,

  927. growth in the Gospel,

  928. how we nurture

  929. and develop.

  930. It's a dominant theme,

  931. developing

  932. or growing up

  933. with the nurture

  934. and admonition

  935. of the Lord.

  936. We've all at one point

  937. in our lives

  938. been babes in Christ.

  939. Maybe we still are

  940. babes in Christ.

  941. Maybe the progress

  942. isn't what it could be.

  943. Maybe it isn't

  944. what it should be.

  945. All the more reason

  946. to be at that table

  947. on the Lord's day

  948. where the nourishment

  949. and provision

  950. and blessing

  951. and grace

  952. and strength

  953. is there provided

  954. by Jesus,

  955. our Saviour.

  956. So this dominant theme

  957. of progressing

  958. is a thing

  959. that helps us

  960. to get things right.

  961. Verse 14 again,

  962. do not be conformed.

  963. That's where you used to be.

  964. That's the darkness.

  965. That's the world.

  966. That's worldliness.

  967. Worldly wise,

  968. if you like,

  969. to use Bunyan's

  970. famous character.

  971. Worldly wise

  972. will tell us

  973. all day and all night,

  974. well, you know,

  975. that's nice

  976. that you're in the seminary.

  977. Nice to have the Bible.

  978. Nice to have Psalms.

  979. But you know what?

  980. Really?

  981. Commitment?

  982. Really?

  983. Do you have to go that far?

  984. Do you need to?

  985. You know,

  986. there's other ways

  987. and means.

  988. And listen,

  989. he'll talk to us all night

  990. about the other ways

  991. and means.

  992. Anything.

  993. But Christ.

  994. And the finished work

  995. of Christ upon the cross.

  996. Which is what

  997. the table speaks of

  998. and reminds us of

  999. so powerfully.

  1000. Do not be conformed.

  1001. And you'll be aware

  1002. of the ministry,

  1003. the writings of

  1004. Dale Ralph Davis,

  1005. a tremendous American

  1006. commentator,

  1007. very much focuses

  1008. on Old Testament scriptures.

  1009. But he said this,

  1010. he was looking at

  1011. a particular time

  1012. in Israel's history

1013. and he was applying it

1014. to our day and age

1015. and this is what he said

  1016. and it's something

1017. for us to take on board

  1018. and apply

  1019. if it applies.

1020. The church in the West

  1021. needs to recover

  1022. doctrinal purity,

  1023. vital worship,

  1024. a bold witness

  1025. holiness.

  1026. And personal holiness.

  1027. holiness.

1028. That one right at the end there.

  1029. There's the key.

  1030. Personal holiness.

1031. And so that keeps us

  1032. from burrowing away

  1033. into books

  1034. and becoming

  1035. if you like

  1036. professional theologians.

  1037. That doesn't cut it

  1038. with the Lord.

  1039. That's not what we're about.

  1040. This vital worship

  1041. and bold witness

  1042. will be fed

  1043. by a personal holiness

  1044. and that's where

  1045. we're going here

  1046. in this progression

  1047. we're called to make.

  1048. Guided by our conscience

  1049. that is tender

  1050. toward Christ,

  1051. we press on

  1052. toward the goal.

  1053. Here we are called

  1054. twice to consider

  1055. and reflect upon

  1056. that we're not

  1057. conforming to the passions

  1058. of our former ignorance

  1059. but in our conduct

  1060. we are being holy

  1061. and in our conduct

  1062. we are being fearful.

  1063. We have a sense

  1064. of awe and wonder

  1065. living to the glory

  1066. and honour

1067. of our Lord and Saviour

  1068. Jesus Christ.

  1069. I mentioned

  1070. Pilgrim's Progress.

  1071. I wonder tonight

  1072. if when we begin

  1073. to think of progress

  1074. we can think

  1075. we're not

1076. we're not where we want to be.

  1077. I'm not

  1078. where I thought I would be.

  1079. I haven't made the progress

1080. that I really should have.

  1081. We could probably all

  1082. think about that

1083. and take that on board

1084. but let me remind you

1085. and I hope to encourage you

  1086. by doing so

  1087. of the first chapter

  1088. and Pilgrim's Progress

  1089. as Pilgrim leaves

  1090. the city of destruction

  1091. under the guidance

  1092. of the evangelist.

  1093. What happens next?

  1094. Pliable.

  1095. An obstinate

1096. get a hold of him

  1097. slow him down

  1098. distract him

  1099. trip him up

  1100. next thing

  1101. he's in the swamp

  1102. of despond

1103. he manages to get out

1104. of that in a right mess

  1105. and worldly wise

  1106. comes along

1107. gets a hold of him

1108. points him to the village

  1109. of morality

  1110. in the house

  1111. of Mr. Legality

  1112. he's in all sorts

  1113. of bother and trouble

  1114. and then the evangelist

  1115. comes along

  1116. and says

  1117. in a repeated conversation

1118. what are you doing here?

1119. What are you doing here?

  1120. There's the path

  1121. I told you

  1122. look for the light

  1123. walk toward the light

  1124. and you'll find

  1125. the narrow gate

  1126. and that's just

  1127. the first chapter

  1128. so maybe we could

  1129. having read that chapter

  1130. we could look at

  1131. the front cover

  1132. and think

  1133. pilgrim's progress

  1134. it's more like

  1135. pilgrim's lack

  1136. of progress

  1137. and that's what

  1138. makes the book

  1139. so timeless

  1140. so appealing

  1141. so real

  1142. because we're all

  1143. that pilgrim

  1144. the slough of despond

  1145. being distracted

  1146. by obstinate

  1147. and pliable

  1148. ending up

  1149. in the village

  1150. of morality

  1151. knocking on the door

  1152. of the house

  1153. of Mr. Legality

  1154. instead of sticking

  1155. to the king's highway

  1156. and pressing on

  1157. and that's what

  1158. Peter is calling us

  1159. here to do

  1160. in this passage

1161. that we are to seek

  1162. a personal holiness

  1163. and a conduct

  1164. that reflects

  1165. progression

  1166. growth

  1167. on a personal basis

1168. and so we look in

  1169. here

  1170. to get this right

  1171. and we say

  1172. Lord show me

  1173. your ways

  1174. that's where 25

  1175. the Psalm 25

  1176. starts

  1177. to you

  1178. oh Lord

  1179. I lift my soul

  1180. I trust in you

  1181. continually

  1182. do not let me

  1183. be put to shame

  1184. nor let my foes

  1185. gloat over me

  1186. Lord

  1187. reveal to me

  1188. your ways

  1189. and all your paths

  1190. help me to know

  1191. direct and guide me

  1192. in your truth

  1193. instruct me

1194. in the way to go

  1195. with our Bibles

  1196. open

  1197. with our hearts

  1198. humble

  1199. the Lord

  1200. instructs us

1201. on the way to go

  1202. and here tonight

  1203. that instruction

  1204. comes through Peter

  1205. saying

  1206. set your mind

1207. on things that are above

  1208. look at this

  1209. work of preparation

  1210. be prepared

  1211. to exert yourself

  1212. to learn

  1213. and study

  1214. and get in about

  1215. the word

  1216. to feed your soul

  1217. your heart

  1218. and arm your mind

  1219. by being rooted

  1220. in the word

  1221. and then

  1222. with that preparation

  1223. there's progress

  1224. and that progress

  1225. is to be

  1226. you are holy

1227. and you are to be

  1228. fearful

  1229. and we're to

  1230. press on

  1231. with our conscience

  1232. tendered toward Christ

  1233. last thing

  1234. in verse 17

1235. if you call on him

  1236. as father

  1237. there's preparation

  1238. there's progress

  1239. there's prayer

  1240. perhaps there's nothing

1241. that marks the Christian life

1242. or the Christian way of life

  1243. quite as much

  1244. as prayer

  1245. I love the Lord

  1246. because my voice

  1247. and prayers

  1248. heeded here

  1249. I while I live

  1250. will call on him

  1251. who bowed to me

  1252. his ear

  1253. what a great

  1254. and glorious thing

  1255. it is

  1256. to be in prayer

  1257. to converse

  1258. with the living God

  1259. and right in here

  1260. in the midst

  1261. of this section

  1262. about

  1263. the Christian way

  1264. of life

  1265. here it is

  1266. if you call

  1267. on him

  1268. as father

  1269. who judges

  1270. impartially

  1271. according to

  1272. each one's deeds

  1273. Peter wants him

  1274. to be

  1275. a praying people

  1276. praying congregations

  1277. praying individuals

  1278. praying families

  1279. praying

  1280. calling on

  1281. the name

  1282. of the Lord

  1283. calling

  1284. it's a rich word

  1285. it's used here

  1286. it has a sense

  1287. to rely

  1288. on the one

  1289. that is named

  1290. and who is named

  1291. our loving

  1292. heavenly father

  1293. and we call

  1294. on him

  1295. we rely on him

  1296. we pray on him

  1297. we pray to him

  1298. we call out

  1299. to him

  1300. in Genesis 12

  1301. we have a very

  1302. similar phrase

  1303. used of

  1304. Abraham

  1305. and in fact

1306. I think it might be

  1307. Genesis 4 or 5

  1308. the first description

  1309. of human beings

  1310. praying

  1311. uses this phrase

  1312. men called upon

1313. the name of the Lord

  1314. and here it is

  1315. in 1 Peter

  1316. it's been well said

1317. that if you pull a thread

  1318. in Genesis

  1319. the Bible

  1320. wrinkles in Revelation

  1321. calling upon

1322. the name of the Lord

  1323. is a fundamental

  1324. of the Christian

  1325. way of life

  1326. we must rely

  1327. upon the one

  1328. that is named

  1329. here

  1330. as Abraham did

  1331. as he built

  1332. his third altar

  1333. at Bethel

  1334. he called upon

  1335. the name

  1336. of the Lord

  1337. it also

  1338. in that sense

  1339. it's interesting

  1340. in Abraham's

  1341. sense

  1342. it has the impact

  1343. of a word

  1344. that has a sense

  1345. of proclamation

  1346. and there's a bit

  1347. of thinking

  1348. that maybe

  1349. he wasn't just

  1350. praying

  1351. he was preaching

  1352. well maybe

  1353. we can't be

  1354. entirely sure

  1355. let's keep the focus

  1356. on prayer

  1357. call on him

  1358. as father

  1359. what's our father

  1360. done for us

  1361. tonight

  1362. for God

  1363. so loved the world

  1364. that he gave

  1365. it's not precious

  1366. to us this evening

  1367. do you know

  1368. what tomorrow

  1369. will bring

  1370. the weekend

  1371. will bring

  1372. there's challenges

  1373. difficulties

  1374. there's darkness

  1375. there's heartache

  1376. there's sadness

  1377. around us

  1378. quite often

  1379. isn't there

  1380. how do we deal

  1381. with it

  1382. how do we focus

  1383. we clear the mind

  1384. we make preparation

  1385. we make progress

  1386. but above all

  1387. we pray

  1388. we pray for wisdom

  1389. tact

  1390. patience

  1391. insight

  1392. understanding

  1393. we call upon

  1394. our father

  1395. in faith

  1396. and humility

  1397. and we do so

  1398. conscious of his

  1399. lavish provision

  1400. toward us

  1401. let me just read

  1402. to you these

  1403. wonderful words

  1404. in philippians

  1405. in chapter 4

  1406. do not be anxious

  1407. about anything

  1408. isn't that often

  1409. our undoing

  1410. we get so anxious

  1411. we forget to pray

  1412. or we pray

  1413. but our prayers

  1414. are skin deep

  1415. they don't go

  1416. through the ceiling

  1417. we don't lift up

  1418. holy hands

  1419. to our father

  1420. we hold on

  1421. to our worries

  1422. because we get

  1423. so anxious

  1424. don't we

  1425. do not be anxious

  1426. about anything

  1427. but in everything

  1428. by prayer

  1429. and supplication

  1430. with thanksgiving

  1431. let your requests

  1432. be made known

  1433. to God

  1434. and what happens

  1435. the peace of God

  1436. which surpasses

  1437. all understanding

  1438. will guard

  1439. your hearts

  1440. and your minds

  1441. in Christ Jesus

  1442. the promise of God

  1443. as we call on

  1444. our father

  1445. he pours out

  1446. to us

  1447. this peace

  1448. the peace of God

  1449. that passes

  1450. all understanding

  1451. Paul was so

  1452. determined

  1453. in that letter

  1454. the Philippians

  1455. that these ancient

  1456. Christians

  1457. and us tonight

  1458. would be reminded

  1459. of what God

  1460. longs to do

  1461. in our hearts

  1462. to pour out

  1463. his peace

  1464. his blessing

  1465. his joy

  1466. and communion

  1467. with the living God

  1468. and prayer

  1469. is right at the

  1470. centre of it all

  1471. you know well

1472. the name of John Calvin

1473. he was a great hero

  1474. of the Reformation

  1475. experienced

  1476. a vastly experienced

  1477. and capable

  1478. able church leader

  1479. and theologian

  1480. my goodness

  1481. wasn't he just

  1482. that man though

  1483. went through many trials

  1484. great heartache

  1485. in his life

  1486. he did not operate

  1487. in a vacuum

  1488. he didn't live

  1489. in an ivory tower

  1490. he knew

  1491. life often

  1492. inflicted

  1493. what he called

  1494. the ravages

  1495. of anxiety

  1496. and he said

  1497. it is by such

  1498. anxiety

  1499. that the

  1500. fervour

  1501. of prayer

  1502. is inflamed

  1503. you see

  1504. what the world

  1505. thinks we should do

  1506. and what anxious

1507. is go to the world

  1508. for solutions

  1509. go to counsellors

  1510. for solutions

  1511. run a programme

  1512. don't go to the

  1513. throne of grace

1514. why would you do that

  1515. and the Christian

  1516. says

  1517. but that's where

  1518. I'm going

  1519. I'm going to call

  1520. upon my loving

  1521. heavenly father

  1522. for he sent

  1523. his only begotten

  1524. son into this world

  1525. so that through him

  1526. we might be

  1527. born again

  1528. and given

  1529. a living hope

  1530. cleansed

  1531. and made right

  1532. by being

  1533. made new

  1534. and our understanding

  1535. our prayer life

  1536. our Christian conduct

  1537. what's the motivation

  1538. our ransom price

  1539. the precious

  1540. blood

  1541. of Christ

  1542. that's what the world

  1543. doesn't understand

  1544. that's what the world

  1545. doesn't get

  1546. out there

  1547. the world out there

  1548. thinks

  1549. we're engaged

  1550. in something religious

  1551. and we're engaged

  1552. in something

  1553. Presbyterian

  1554. we're engaged

  1555. in something

  1556. free church

  1557. but what we're doing

  1558. is we're engaged

  1559. in worship

  1560. gratitude

  1561. thanksgiving

  1562. for the ransom

  1563. price that's been

  1564. paid for our sins

  1565. a price we could

  1566. not pay

  1567. the things of this

  1568. world are

  1569. perishable

  1570. silver and gold

  1571. but the precious

  1572. blood of Christ

  1573. stands above

  1574. and beyond

  1575. all of it

  1576. and that is

  1577. a ransom

  1578. price

  1579. that was

  1580. paid

  1581. by our

  1582. saviour

  1583. for us

  1584. and so we

  1585. can

  1586. confess and

  1587. acknowledge our

  1588. lack of progress

  1589. our stumbles

  1590. and our falling

  1591. but we do so

  1592. in prayer

  1593. calling out to

  1594. our loving

  1595. heavenly father

  1596. we give thanks

  1597. to him for

  1598. the goodness

  1599. of his provision

  1600. toward us

  1601. and these

  1602. characteristics

  1603. flow

  1604. from our

  1605. deeper

  1606. the deeper

  1607. and more

  1608. clearer

  1609. our understanding

  1610. of the ransom

  1611. price

  1612. the more

  1613. preparation

  1614. will be seen

  1615. the more

  1616. progress

  1617. will occur

  1618. the more

  1619. prayer will

  1620. take place

  1621. what a thing

  1622. to be a

  1623. praying people

  1624. we have been

  1625. ransomed

  1626. friends from

  1627. the futile

  1628. ways

  1629. to the ways

  1630. of faith

  1631. and hope

  1632. our way

  1633. of life

  1634. is one

  1635. that is

  1636. infused

  1637. with our

  1638. saviour

  1639. Jesus

  1640. and it's

  1641. worth noting

  1642. just as we

  1643. close

  1644. that in this

  1645. passage alone

  1646. in 1st

  1647. Peter chapter

  1648. 1 verses

  1649. 1 to 20

  1650. 8 times

  1651. the apostle

  1652. names

  1653. Jesus Christ

  1654. another 8

  1655. times

  1656. he refers

  1657. to him

  1658. as him

  1659. he refers

  1660. to him

  1661. directly

  1662. for instance

  1663. there in

  1664. verse 20

  1665. he was

  1666. foreknown

  1667. before the

  1668. foundation of

  1669. the world

  1670. but was

  1671. manifest in

  1672. the last

  1673. times for

  1674. your sake

  1675. who through

  1676. him are

  1677. believers in

  1678. God who

  1679. raised him

  1680. from the

  1681. dead and

  1682. gave him

  1683. glory so

  1684. that your

  1685. faith and

  1686. hope are

  1687. in God

  1688. by the time

  1689. we come

  1690. to verse

  1691. 21

  1692. Jesus Christ

  1693. has been

  1694. named and

  1695. referred to

  1696. 16 times

  1697. the church

  1698. of Christ

  1699. on earth

  1700. infused with

  1701. the name of

  1702. our saviour

  1703. and it's to

  1704. his glory

  1705. and his

  1706. honour and

  1707. his praise

  1708. that we

  1709. live out

  1710. our

  1711. Christian

  1712. lives

  1713. and may

  1714. the Lord

  1715. bless you

  1716. as you

  1717. do that

  1718. in these

  1719. days to

  1720. come

  1721. as you

  1722. gather

  1723. tomorrow

  1724. with

  1725. Callum

  1726. here in

  1727. the seminary

  1728. and David

  1729. at the

  1730. church services

  1731. over the

  1732. weekend

  1733. may the

  1734. Lord bless

  1735. you and

  1736. keep you

  1737. and feed

  1738. you and

  1739. encourage you

  1740. at this

  1741. time of

  1742. communion

  1743. through word

  1744. and sacrament

  1745. that God

  1746. would be

  1747. to you

  1748. your loving

  1749. heavenly

  1750. father

  1751. that you

  1752. would be

  1753. to him

  1754. an obedient

  1755. loving

  1756. child of

  1757. God

  1758. professing

  1759. your

  1760. faith

  1761. acknowledging

  1762. you need

  1763. to prepare

  1764. and make

  1765. progress

  1766. and pray

  1767. all the

  1768. time

  1769. we have

  1770. to increase

  1771. and improve

  1772. in these

  1773. characteristics

  1774. all of us

  1775. of course

  1776. we do

  1777. we're a

  1778. work in

  1779. progress

  1780. and may

  1781. God

  1782. bless

  1783. the progress

  1784. we make

  1785. tonight

  1786. to his

  1787. glory

  1788. to his

  1789. name

  1790. be

  1791. all the

  1792. praise

  1793. we'll bow

  1794. in prayer

  1795. for a moment

  1796. together

  1797. Lord our

  1798. God we

  1799. thank you

  1800. for your

  1801. goodness

  1802. toward us

  1803. we thank

  1804. you for

  1805. this

  1806. opportunity

  1807. the privilege

  1808. of

  1809. worshipping

  1810. together

  1811. Lord we

  1812. commit

  1813. to you

  1814. these days

  1815. to come

  1816. in this

  1817. communion

  1818. weekend

  1819. all the

  1820. services

  1821. all the

  1822. preaching

  1823. the serving

  1824. of the

  1825. sacrament

  1826. the

  1827. offer

  1828. the

  1829. remembering

  1830. of Jesus

  1831. offering

  1832. himself

  1833. which

  1834. the table

  1835. speaks to

  1836. us of

  1837. so clearly

  1838. so powerfully

  1839. hear us

  1840. Lord in

  1841. these things

  1842. grant us

  1843. grace to

  1844. prepare our

  1845. hearts and

  1846. minds for

  1847. action

  1848. grant us

  1849. Lord grace

  1850. and strength

  1851. to make the

  1852. progress we

  1853. need to run

  1854. the race

  1855. to set

  1856. before us

  1857. to fight

  1858. the good

  1859. fight

  1860. to look

  1861. unto Jesus

  1862. and that we

  1863. would at all

  1864. times be

  1865. people of

  1866. prayer

  1867. calling out

  1868. to our

  1869. Father

  1870. we thank

  1871. you that

  1872. you hear us

  1873. in Jesus

  1874. and we

  1875. pray for

  1876. your blessing

  1877. now this

  1878. evening upon

  1879. us

  1880. forgive our

  1881. sins Lord

  1882. and go

  1883. before us

  1884. in his

  1885. precious name

  1886. we ask

  1887. it

  1888. Amen

  1889. so we'll

  1890. turn to the

  1891. psalter this

  1892. evening to

  1893. close our

  1894. service

  1895. we'll sing

  1896. from Psalm

  1897. 27

  1898. in the

  1899. psalter

  1900. Psalm

  1901. 27

  1902. I don't

  1903. think we're

  1904. doing all

  1905. these verses

  1907. verses 11

  1908. to 14

  1909. says here

  1910. 1 to 14

  1911. that's the

  1912. whole psalm

  1913. that might be

  1914. a bit much

  1915. we'll go from

  1916. verse 11

  1917. O Lord

  1918. instruct me

  1919. in thy

  1920. way

  1921. to me

  1922. a leader

  1923. be

  1924. in a

  1925. plain

  1926. path

  1927. because

  1928. of

  1929. those

  1930. that

  1931. hatred

  1932. bear to

  1933. me

  1934. give me

  1935. not to

  1936. an enemy's

  1937. will

  1938. for witnesses

  1939. that lie

  1940. against me

  1941. risen are

  1942. and such

  1943. as breathe

  1944. out

  1945. cruelty

  1946. I fainted

  1947. had unless

  1948. it I

  1949. believed

  1950. had to

  1951. see

  1952. the

  1953. Lord's

  1954. own

  1955. goodness

  1956. in the

  1957. land

  1958. of them

  1959. that

  1960. living

  1961. being

  1962. in that

  1963. wonderful

  1964. phrase

  1965. wait

  1966. on the

  1967. Lord

  1968. and be

  1969. thou

  1970. strong

  1971. we'll

  1972. sing to

  1973. the end

  1974. to the tune

  1975. Calmarnock

  1976. we'll stand

  1977. together

  1978. O Lord

  1979. instruct me

  1980. in thy

  1981. way

  1982. to

  1983. me

  1984. the

  1985. leader

  1986. be

  1987. in a

  1988. plain

  1989. path

  1990. because

  1991. of

  1992. those

  1993. that

  1994. hatred

  1995. send

  1996. them

  1997. to

  1998. me

  1999. give

  2000. me

  2001. not

  2002. to

  2003. mine

  2004. and

  2005. his

  2006. will

  2007. for

  2008. witnesses

  2009. that

  2010. lie

  2011. against

  2012. me

  2013. risen

  2014. and

  2015. sons

  2016. !

  2017. I

  2024. !

  2025. I

  2026. fainted

  2027. had

  2028. unless

  2029. that

  2030. I

  2031. will

  2032. him

  2033. have

  2034. to

  2035. Lord's

  2036. own

  2037. goodness

  2038. !

  2039. have

  2040. to

  2041. in

  2042. of

  2043. their

  2044. blood

  2045. living

  2046. being

  2047. Wait

  2048. on

  2049. the

  2050. Lord

  2051. and

  2052. be

  2053. the

  2054. strong

  2055. that

  2056. he

  2057. shall

  2058. spread

  2059. spread

  2060. afford

  2061. and

  2062. to

  2063. thine

  2064. heart

  2065. give

  2066. to

  2067. the

  2068. which

  2069. I

  2070. say

  2071. upon

  2072. the

  2073. Lord

  2074. may

  2075. the

  2076. of the

  2077. Christ

  2078. love of
