  1. Reverend David McLeod. And it's my pleasure to welcome David to the pulpit this evening and over this weekend.

  2. ! It's good to have him with us. We look forward to his ministry and his fellowship with us over these days.

  3. And we do pray the Lord's blessing on him now as he comes to minister to us.

  4. So I'll hand over to David to lead us in worship.

  5. Thank you, Callum. It's good to be with you over this weekend.

  6. We're going to begin this time of worship as we hear the words that we will come back to a number of times over the course of this weekend from Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  7. The words of Jesus. He says,

  8. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

  9. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

  10. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

  11. We'll worship God and we'll sing together to his praise from Psalm 95, the Scottish Psalter, page 357 of the books.

  12. 357 in the book, and we sing Psalm 95 from verses 1 to verse 6 of the psalm.

  13. O come, let us sing to the Lord.

  14. Come, let us, everyone, a joyful noise make to the rock of our salvation.

  15. We'll sing down to the end of verse 6 to God's praise.

  16. O come, let us sing to the Lord.

  17. Come, let us, everyone, a joyful noise make to the rock of our salvation.

  18. Let us sing to the Lord.

  19. A joyful noise.

  20. For God, a great God and great King, above all gods he is.

  21. There's love, the earth, and in his hand, the strength of hell's distance.

  22. To him the spacious seat belongs.

  23. To him the spacious seat belongs.

  24. For he the same did make.

  25. The cry of God, the cry of God, so from his hand, his form and first did take.

  26. O come, let us worship him.

  27. Let us bow down with all.

  28. And on our knees before the Lord, our maker, let us fall.

  29. Let us unite our hearts in prayer together.

  30. Let's pray.

  31. Our heavenly Father, we thank you that we are able to gather together in this place this evening.

  32. And we are able to call you our Father because we come in the name of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior.

  33. And we thank you that it's through his name and through his finished work that we have a way through into the presence of the God who is almighty.

  34. We praise you for who you are, even as you have revealed yourself to us in the psalm that we have sang.

  35. We thank you that as we reflect on the words that we have taken upon our lips, we are reminded of the fact that you are the God who is the Lord, the God who is over all.

  36. You are our creator, the one who has brought everything that we see in this world and everything that we are in our being.

  37. You have brought that into being with a word from nothing.

  38. Such is the power of your creative word.

  39. And we thank you, Lord, for the majesty of your creation.

  40. Even as we look around in the place that we come from, we see the vastness and the beauty of creation, which points us to the wonder and the majesty of who you are.

  41. And we ask, Lord, that as we lift our eyes to see the hills, as we are aware of the power of the sea, as we look up and see the stars which you have placed in space, we pray that our eyes would be opened to see that you are the God who has brought everything into being.

  42. And we pray that day by day, we would worship you for who you are as our creator.

  43. We thank you that you are our sustainer.

  44. We have breath in our lungs.

  45. We have the measure of health and strength that enables us to be here because you are the God who sustains us.

  46. And we praise you, Lord, for your sustaining grace.

  47. We thank you that morning by morning, you grant to us new mercies.

  48. Even the food that we eat and the water that we drink.

  49. The health and strength that we enjoy.

  50. We confess that often we take it for granted.

  51. But we pray that you would forgive us for doing so.

  52. Help us to remember with every day that you give to us that this is the day that the Lord has made.

  53. Enable us to rejoice and to be glad in it and to redeem the time.

  54. To remember that our days in this world are short.

  55. So help us, we pray, whilst we have opportunity in this world to look to you, to trust you.

  56. And as your people, we pray that we would serve you.

  57. That we would live not for self.

  58. But that we would remember, as the catechum says to us, that man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever.

  59. We thank you also, Lord, as we think about the words that we have sang that you are our Savior.

  60. We hear the phrase, the rock of our salvation.

  61. And we are pointed to Jesus.

  62. And we ask, Lord, that over this weekend, we would have our eyes fixed upon Jesus.

  63. We thank you, Father, for the vastness of your love.

  64. That you would send your only begotten Son into this world to be our Savior, to be the Good Shepherd.

  65. The one who would lay down his life for the sheep.

  66. We thank you for the cross that we are called to gather around over these days.

  67. We thank you for the institution of the Sacrament of Communion.

  68. Where we gather around the Lord's table to remember his death until he comes.

  69. We pray, Lord, you've forgiven us that we would be so distracted by the things of this world that we would forget.

  70. And yet we confess that often our minds drift.

  71. Often our lives are so taken up with the things of this world that we lose focus on the cross.

  72. But as we drift from the cross, we are in all manner of danger.

  73. And so we pray, Lord, that over these days that we would remember the death of Jesus.

  74. And as we do so, we would do so with great reverence.

  75. Remembering the greatness of who you are.

  76. We pray that we would do so with that sense of contrition.

  77. That we would be confessing our sin.

  78. That we would have that posture of continual repentance.

  79. Turning away from sin.

  80. Confessing our falls and failures.

  81. And seeking fresh cleansing in the blood of Jesus.

  82. And we pray that as we remember the Lord Jesus over this weekend, we would do so with joy in our hearts.

  83. Remembering that because he died, we are forgiven if we are trusting in him.

  84. And remembering that on the third day, just as he promised, he rose from the dead.

  85. He reigns, he lives.

  86. And he has promised that one day he will return.

  87. And until that day, we remember his death until he comes.

  88. And we pray that these days would be a time for us where we wait upon the Lord.

  89. And we know renewed strength.

  90. And we know the blessing of meeting together as your people and your presence.

  91. We pray that we would have fresh perspective.

  92. That we would see with even more wonder the depths of your grace.

  93. The wonder of all that you have done for us to make us your children.

  94. And we pray that we would respond in worship.

  95. Not just as we gather here in the building for an hour or two each day.

  96. We pray that over these days, as we go about the different things that we have to do,

  97. our minds would come back to remember all that you have done for us.

  98. That we would be in the spirit of worship over these days.

  99. We ask, Lord, that you would be with those who are absent tonight from this place who would desire to be here.

  100. We are conscious always of those who are struggling with ill health.

  101. And as we think of them, Lord, whether they are in hospital or at home,

  102. we pray that you would draw near to them.

  103. That you would lay your hands of healing upon them where that is your will.

  104. And that they would know your grace, which is sufficient for each day that you give to them in time.

  105. We pray for those who are sorrowing.

  106. Those who struggle with grief.

  107. Those who may be bewildered even at the perplexing things that often happen in this world.

  108. And as we think of them, we pray for your comfort.

  109. We pray that you, the God of all comfort, would draw near to them.

  110. And give to them that peace that comes not from this world, but that comes from heaven.

  111. We pray for any who may be struggling in grief and who may feel distant from you at this time.

  112. And we ask, Father, that they would know your loving touch upon them.

  113. That they would know the comfort of God, the Holy Spirit drawing near to them.

  114. We think especially of the Mitchell family in Braggar.

  115. And with the tragedy of all that we have heard of, we pray that they would know your peace.

  116. That they would know your presence.

  117. That you would uphold them.

  118. That you would strengthen them.

  119. That you would be in that community in a special way over these days.

  120. We pray for those who may struggle with darkness that affects their minds.

  121. Those who may feel cast down in their souls.

  122. Who may battle with depression.

  123. And we ask, Lord, that you would minister to them where often we cannot get through with words.

  124. We thank you that you are able to minister in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  125. And as we think of those who may feel that darkness engulfing them.

  126. We pray that the light of Christ would break through.

  127. And that they would know that you are God and that you are with them.

  128. We pray for those who battle with addictions.

  129. Those who may come here week by week for road to recovery.

  130. And many others who may not.

  131. And as our minds go to such, we ask, Lord, that you would help them.

  132. And that they would desire the help, the strength that comes from calling upon the name of the Lord Jesus.

  133. And we pray for those who may be healthy and who may be comfortable.

  134. And who may be at ease in their minds.

  135. And may have everything that they need in this world.

  136. But have no sense of a need of Christ.

  137. We pray for those who do not realize the danger that there is in remaining in sin.

  138. We can think of family members and friends and people we work with.

  139. Who may be interested in many things, but have no desire for the things of God.

  140. And we know that without the moving of your spirit, there is nothing that we can do to change that.

  141. And so we know that we can carry them to you in prayer.

  142. And as we think of names and as we think of faces.

  143. And we ask, Lord, that you would awaken souls in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  144. That they may feel the weight of sin.

  145. And that they may look to Jesus, who is the Savior.

  146. The one who is able to give rest.

  147. True rest and eternal rest.

  148. To all who will come to him.

  149. So hear our prayers.

  150. Bless our time together.

  151. Help us, we pray.

  152. As we read your word.

  153. As we meditate upon your word.

  154. As we sing.

  155. We know, Lord, that we can do nothing apart from you.

  156. And so we ask that you would draw near to us.

  157. And as we sing, we would sing from our hearts.

  158. As we read, we would recognize that this is the word of God.

  159. And not the word of man.

  160. And as we meditate upon the word, we pray, Lord.

  161. That you would illuminate our minds.

  162. That you would help us in speaking and listening and responding.

  163. So that all we do would be to the glory of God.

  164. Hear our prayers.

  165. Cleanse us from our sin as we confess it.

  166. And lead us in the power of the Holy Spirit.

  167. And we pray these things in Jesus' name.

  168. Amen.

  169. We'll sing again to God's praise.

  170. We'll sing this time from Psalm 42.

  171. Sing Psalms 42.

  172. Found on page 53.

  173. Sing Psalms 42.

  174. And we sing from verse 1 to verse 5.

  175. As pants the deer for flowing streams, so longs my soul, O God, for you.

  176. I thirst for God, the living God.

  177. When can I meet with God and you?

  178. And we'll sing down to verse 5 to God's praise.

  179. And we sing down to verse 5 to God's praise.

  180. singing voyque

  181. For God, the living God, when can I meet with God anew?

  182. My tears have been my constant hurt, both in the night and in the day.

  183. While all day long insistently, where is this God of new to sing?

  184. As I pour out my soul in grief, these things I do remember still.

  185. And with the multitude I went up to God's hands on Zion Hill.

  186. In their procession I would lead, as we approach with cheerful song.

  187. And shouts of joy and thankfulness, rejoicing with the festive throng.

  188. Why are you downcast, O my soul?

  189. Why are you so disturbed in me?

  190. Just thought, for I will praise him yet.

  191. My Saviour and my God is he.

  192. If you could turn with me now in your Bibles, please, to Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  193. Matthew chapter 11, it's on page 983 of the Bible in the pulpit.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  194. I don't know if that corresponds with Bibles in the pew.

  195. Matthew chapter 11, and we'll read from verse 1 to verse 24.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  196. This is God's Word.

  197. When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

  198. Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him,

  199. Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?

  200. And Jesus answered them, Go and tell John what you hear and see.

  201. The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk.

  202. Lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear.

  203. And the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.

  204. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.

  205. As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John.

  206. What did you go out into the wilderness to see?

  207. A reed shaken by the wind?

  208. What then did you go out to see?

  209. A man dressed in soft clothing?

  210. Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in king's houses.

  211. What then did you go out to see?

  212. A prophet?

  213. Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

  214. This is he of whom it is written,

  215. Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

  216. who will prepare your way before you.

  217. Truly I say to you, among those born of woman,

  218. there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist.

  219. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

  220. From the days of John the Baptist until now,

  221. the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,

  222. and the violent take it by force.

  223. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

  224. And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.

  225. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

  226. But to what shall I compare this generation?

  227. It is like children sitting in marketplaces and calling to their playmates.

  228. We played the flute for you, and you did not dance.

  229. We sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.

  230. For John came neither eating nor drinking,

  231. and they say he is a demon.

  232. The Son of Man came eating and drinking,

  233. and they say, look at him, a glutton and a drunkard,

  234. a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

  235. Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.

  236. Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done,

  237. because they did not repent.

  238. Woe to you, Kerasim!

  239. Woe to you, Bethsaida!

  240. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,

  241. they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

  242. But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

  243. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven?

  244. You will be brought down to Hades.

  245. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom,

  246. it would have remained until this day.

  247. But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.

  248. And I'm going to read on just to the end of the chapter.

  249. At that time, Jesus declared,

  250. Come to me,

  251. All who labor and are heavy laden,

  252. And I will give you rest.

  253. Take my yoke upon you,

  254. And learn from me,

  255. For I am gentle and lowly in heart,

  256. And you will find rest for your souls.

  257. For my yoke is easy,

  258. And my burden is light.

  259. Amen.

  260. And may God bless that reading of his word to us.

  261. We're going to sing again now to God's praise

  262. From Psalm 43,

  263. The Scottish Psalter,

  264. Page 264.

  265. Psalm 43,

  266. And we'll sing from verses 3

  267. To verse 5 of the psalm.

  268. O send thy light forth,

  269. And thy truth,

  270. Let them be guides to me,

  271. And bring me to thine holy hill,

  272. Even where thy dwellings be.

  273. Then will I to God's altar go,

  274. To God my chiefest joy,

  275. Yea,

  276. God my God,

  277. Thy name to praise,

  278. My harp I will employ.

  279. Down to the end of the psalm,

  280. To God's praise.

  281. O send thy light,

  282. For time thy truth,

  283. Let them be guides to me,

  284. And bring me to thy holy hill,

  285. In where thy dwellings be.

  286. Then will I to God's altar go,

  287. To God my chiefest joy,

  288. In where thy dwellings be.

  289. In where thy dwellings be.

  290. In where thy dwellings be.

  291. My heart I will employ.

  292. Why art thou then,

  293. Hast thou my soul,

  294. What should discourage thee,

  295. And why with vexing thoughts,

  296. Are thou disquieted in me,

  297. Still trust in God,

  298. For him to praise,

  299. Good thoughts I yet shall bow,

  301. chapter 11.

  302. And as we do so, let's pray again.

  303. Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word, and we thank you for the opportunity

  304. and for the desire that you've given us to come to this place in worship.

  305. We pray once more that you would help us, that we would know the help of the Holy Spirit

  306. in all that we do at this time.

  307. We ask that you would open blind eyes, that you would unblock our ears, that you would

  308. stir our hearts, that we would be like those on the road to Emmaus, whose hearts burned

  309. within them, because we know that we have the promise that you are here with us.

  310. So we ask, Lord, for your help at this time.

  311. And we're conscious also, as we meet together, that there are many other congregations, different

  312. denominations in this time, who meet, as we do, around your word.

  313. And what we pray for ourselves, we pray for them.

  314. We ask that whatever Christ crucified is preached, that you would be working, Lord God, in the

  315. power of the Holy Spirit, that Jesus would be lifted up.

  316. And over this weekend, many would be drawn in worship to him, perhaps some for the first

  317. time.

  318. We have heard of stories, and some may have even tasted something of the experience of

  319. awakening and revivals in the past.

  320. And we ask, Lord, that once more you would move in the power of the Holy Spirit, that

  321. we would know showers of refreshing at this time.

  322. Hear our prayers.

  323. Help us, we ask.

  324. In Jesus' name.

  325. Amen.

  326. Amen.

  327. Matthew chapter 11, and we're looking this evening at verses 1 to verse 24.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  328. When Callum told me that the time of the service was at half past seven, it's later than I'm

  329. usually used to when it comes to preaching.

  330. I was wondering how you would manage to keep everybody awake at that time.

  331. But I see that he's disabled the boiler.

  332. So no one will sleep tonight, but hopefully nobody will get to a state of hypothermia.

  333. We've got a doctor in the front row if that happens.

  334. Just raise your hand.

  335. Matthew chapter 11, and verses 1 to 24.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  336. I don't need to tell any of you that in our lives, in our experience,

  337. we are constantly being given offers.

  338. So we get letters, and we get phone calls, cold calls.

  339. We get text messages.

  340. We get emails from companies who are making us offers.

  341. Cheaper broadband, or new mobile phones, or a new bank account, or a new bank, or a new credit card.

  342. There's no shortage of offers.

  343. Fashion garments, new holidays when the weather is bad.

  344. There's a continuous stream of offers that come into our inboxes, and every offer is looking for a response.

  345. Now, the gospel is an offer.

  346. God reaches out to us in the gospel with the most amazing offer that we can ever hear or receive.

  347. Theologians talk about the free offer of the gospel, and the offer of the gospel is the offer of Jesus.

  348. Yes, in the gospel, we are offered forgiveness of sin.

  349. As we feel the weight of our sin, we are offered forgiveness as we hear the good news of the gospel.

  350. We are offered eternal life.

  351. But at the heart of the message of the gospel,

  352. we have the offer of Jesus.

  353. God's Son.

  354. God the Son, our Savior.

  355. John chapter 3, verse 16, probably the most well-known message in all of the Bible.

    John 3:16

  356. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.

  357. And the question I'd like to think about tonight in the time that we have is,

  358. how are we responding to Jesus?

  359. How are we responding to the offer of Jesus?

  360. How are we responding to all that Jesus has done for us?

  361. All that we are called this weekend to remember.

  362. Now, in the passage that we read,

  363. we can note at least four responses.

  364. And I want to take time to go through each of the four responses to Jesus that we see in the verses.

  365. The first response that we see to Jesus is the response of doubt.

  366. So four points.

  367. Number one is doubt.

  368. We see John the Baptist wrestling with doubts as he speaks with Jesus.

  369. The second response that we see is the response of disbelief.

  370. Those who brazenly do not believe.

  371. The third response we see is in those cities who dismiss Jesus.

  372. They just don't respond to him.

  373. And the final response that we finish with is to look at the disciples and see briefly how they are devoted to Jesus.

  374. Their lives are devoted to Jesus.

  375. So first of all, as we work through the verses, we see doubt on the part of John the Baptist.

  376. Look at verses 1 and 2.

  377. When Jesus had finished instructing his 12 disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.

  378. Now, when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ,

  379. he sent word by his disciples and said to him,

  380. Are you the one who is to come or shall we look for another?

  381. So what's going on here in these verses?

  382. Well, what's going on is we see John.

  383. That's John the Baptist.

  384. And he's in prison.

  385. Why is John in prison?

  386. Well, John is in prison because he had been uncompromising in his preaching of the truth.

  387. And as John preached the truth, he clashed with Herod.

  388. He was an authority and he clashed with Herod's wife in particular,

  389. who didn't like the message that John was bringing.

  390. And you can read the story of that in Luke chapter 2 at the end of that chapter.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  391. And what we see is that John, having clashed with Herod and his wife,

  392. John ends up in prison.

  393. So life is difficult for John, as we pick up at the beginning of chapter 11.

  394. And if we think ourselves into John's experience,

  395. not so long ago, there were vast crowds.

  396. Whenever John preached, there were vast crowds that gathered to hear him preach.

  397. He was the man of the moment.

  398. And he was a man who was free.

  399. And John the Baptist, we know, was a man who liked to settle out in the wilderness,

  400. in the wide open spaces.

  401. And yet here we see John, and he's isolated.

  402. He's locked away in a prison cell.

  403. And in this dark time, in John's experience,

  404. it seems that he has a crisis of doubt.

  405. One commentator, Green, says,

  406. everything tends to get out of proportion

  407. when you are suffering for a long time in a confined space alone.

  408. Doubts grow in such a soil.

  409. So if we pause there just for a moment

  410. and try to draw some application.

  411. The application is not complicated.

  412. And I think the application that flows from this is,

  413. if John the Baptist can struggle with doubts,

  414. any of us can struggle with doubt.

  415. Especially when we're suffering.

  416. And we can't understand what's going on in life.

  417. Especially when we're isolated.

  418. And we're not much in Christian fellowship.

  419. Doubts can creep in.

  420. And that's what seems to be happening

  421. in John's experience.

  422. John is struggling with doubts.

  423. Some of the commentators, if you read them,

  424. will say, well, John didn't struggle with doubts.

  425. It's his disciples that struggled with doubts.

  426. John's just sending the disciples to Jesus

  427. so that they can have their doubts dealt with.

  428. But I don't see that in the text.

  429. That doesn't seem to me to be an assumption

  430. that we have license to take.

  431. I think the most obvious application here

  432. is that John, in that dark prison cell,

  433. is wrestling with doubts.

  434. But the question to consider as we move on

  435. is how are John's doubts overcome?

  436. John's doubts are overcome

  437. when he takes them to Jesus.

  438. John doesn't do

  439. the thing that lots of people do

  440. when doubts crash in.

  441. He doesn't withdraw

  442. and turn away from Jesus

  443. and turn away from the Lord's people.

  444. John takes the doubts

  445. that are plaguing him

  446. and he takes them directly to Jesus.

  447. And Jesus deals with the doubts

  448. and lifts him from that place.

  449. And how does Jesus do that?

  450. Well, he does that

  451. by reminding John

  452. of what the Bible says

  453. about the Messiah,

  454. about the one who was to come.

  455. Jesus answered them,

  456. that's the disciples

  457. who've been sent as messengers.

  458. Jesus answered them,

  459. go and tell John

  460. what you hear and see.

  461. The blind receive their sight

  462. and the lame walk.

  463. Lepers are cleansed

  464. and the deaf hear

  465. and the dead are raised up

  466. and the poor have good news

  467. preached to them

  468. and blessed is the one

  469. who is not offended by me.

  470. So what Jesus does here

  471. is he quotes from

  472. Isaiah chapter 35

    Isaiah 35 chapter mention

  473. and Isaiah chapter 61

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  474. and in the quotes

  475. that Jesus lifts,

  476. he reminds John

  477. of what the one,

  478. what the Messiah

  479. would do,

  480. was prophesied to do.

  481. He would heal,

  482. he would preach good news.

  483. And what was Jesus doing?

  484. He was doing exactly

  485. what had been prophesied.

  486. Everything that was found

  487. in Isaiah

  488. that prophesied,

  489. that painted this picture

  490. of who the Messiah would be.

  491. Jesus was doing these things.

  492. So Jesus says to the messengers

  493. who'd come,

  494. go back to John

  495. and tell him Isaiah 35,

  496. tell him Isaiah 61.

  497. And as they marry together

  498. with the accounts

  499. of what Jesus was doing,

  500. he's able to see

  501. with no doubt

  502. but crystal clarity,

  503. this is the Christ.

  504. this is the Savior.

  505. So John's doubts

  506. are overcome

  507. by taking them to Jesus.

  508. John's doubts

  509. are overcome

  510. by being

  511. in the Word of God.

  512. How are our doubts overcome?

  513. exactly the same way.

  514. I don't know

  515. many of you

  516. personally,

  517. I don't know

  518. the congregation here well,

  519. but my,

  520. I would be surprised

  521. if there isn't

  522. at least somebody

  523. whether here

  524. or watching

  525. at a distance

  526. who is wrestling

  527. with some measure

  528. of doubt.

  529. And these doubts

  530. are overcome

  531. as we take them

  532. to Jesus

  533. in prayer

  534. and tell him

  535. what's in our mind,

  536. tell him what's

  537. assaulting us.

  538. And these doubts

  539. are overcome

  540. as we listen

  541. to what God says

  542. by being in the Bible.

  543. So maybe this is a word

  544. for a struggling

  545. Christian tonight.

  546. Maybe doubts

  547. have been crashing in.

  548. Maybe there's someone here

  549. who's saying,

  550. you know,

  551. with all the thoughts

  552. I've been having

  553. and the battles

  554. in my mind,

  555. I wonder if I,

  556. I should even come

  557. to the table

  558. when I feel so,

  559. so low

  560. and unsettled,

  561. do I have warrant

  562. to come?

  563. Now what does

  564. the old hymn say?

  565. Just as I am,

  566. though tossed about

  567. with many a conflict,

  568. many a doubt,

  569. fightings within

  570. and fears without,

  571. O Lamb of God,

  572. I come.

  573. I come.

  574. And that's what we see

  575. John doing.

  576. He comes,

  577. he comes to Jesus

  578. even with his doubts.

  579. And Jesus does not

  580. reject him,

  581. Jesus receives him.

  582. And in verses 7

  583. through to verse 15,

  584. which I'm not going to

  585. drill down into,

  586. Jesus speaks

  587. in such a manner

  588. about John

  589. where John

  590. is able to receive

  591. the reassurance

  592. that he needs.

  593. There's such words

  594. of commendation

  595. about John

  596. if we were to step

  597. through these verses.

  598. But this is always

  599. the way.

  600. As we trust Jesus,

  601. as we obey Jesus,

  602. as we come to him,

  603. or as we come back

  604. to him if we've drifted,

  605. he receives us.

  606. He reassures us

  607. as we come.

  608. So the first thing

  609. that we see

  610. in terms of a response

  611. to Jesus

  612. is a doubt.

  613. The second,

  614. and that doubt

  615. is overcome.

  616. The second response

  617. as we move into

  618. verse 16

  619. is disbelief.

  620. So more briefly,

  621. Jesus says

  622. in verse 16,

  623. but to what shall I

  624. compare this generation?

  625. It is like children

  626. sitting in the marketplaces

  627. and calling

  628. to their playmates.

  629. We played the flute

  630. for you

  631. and you did not dance.

  632. We sang a dirge

  633. and you did not mourn.

  634. And what Jesus

  635. is doing here

  636. in these two verses

  637. is he's doing

  638. what he often did.

  639. He would take

  640. an everyday illustration,

  641. the illustration

  642. of the children

  643. as they played,

  644. and he makes

  645. it a teaching point.

  646. So in Jesus' day,

  647. just as in our day,

  648. the children

  649. would play at

  650. being grown-ups.

  651. And the children

  652. would do what they

  653. saw the grown-ups

  654. doing.

  655. And as the grown-ups

  656. came together,

  657. the children

  658. would see them

  659. sometimes dancing

  660. at weddings

  661. and sometimes mourning

  662. as they came together

  663. at funerals.

  664. That's what they saw

  665. in everyday life.

  666. And so that's

  667. what the children,

  668. maybe to us

  669. seems strange,

  670. but that's what

  671. they would play at.

  672. I suppose it's no more

  673. strange than

  674. what we used to play at,

  675. playing housework

  676. and playing schools

  677. when we were

  678. six and seven years old.

  679. You'd be the teacher,

  680. you'd be the mum,

  681. you'd be the dad.

  682. That's the kind of thing

  683. that was going on here.

  684. The children

  685. would play at

  686. being grown-ups.

  687. But

  688. just as it

  689. is with us,

  690. it was back then

  691. that there was

  692. always one

  693. disgruntled child

  694. that didn't want

  695. to play.

  696. We played

  697. the flute for you,

  698. say the children,

  699. and you didn't dance.

  700. We played a dirge

  701. that you didn't mourn.

  702. There's always one

  703. child that could

  704. never be pleased.

  705. I was thinking back

  706. to school days

  707. in Aberdeen.

  708. I remember

  709. a boy

  710. in my class

  711. called Brian.

  712. He always had

  713. the best

  714. of the greatest trainers.

  715. I always wanted them.

  716. He always brought

  717. the leather football

  718. to school.

  719. He had the most money

  720. or his family did.

  721. And so

  722. we would play

  723. with the mitre

  724. leather football

  725. or the umbral leather football

  726. that Brian would bring.

  727. But invariably

  728. we'd be halfway

  729. through a game

  730. and if somebody

  731. tackled Brian hard

  732. or his team

  733. started to lose,

  734. he would take a huff.

  735. And he would take

  736. hold of the ball

  737. and go off on a huff

  738. and that was the game

  739. all over.

  740. Acting like a

  741. spoiled child.

  742. And Jesus

  743. is saying to the people

  744. who are listening,

  745. that's like you.

  746. You're like

  747. spoiled children.

  748. You can never

  749. be pleased.

  750. Verse 18,

  751. For John came

  752. neither eating

  753. or drinking

  754. and they say

  755. he has a demon.

  756. They don't want

  757. to listen to John.

  758. The son of man

  759. came eating

  760. and drinking

  761. and they say

  762. look at him

  763. a glutton

  764. and a drunkard

  765. a friend of tax collectors

  766. and sinners

  767. yet wisdom

  768. is justified

  769. by her deeds.

  770. didn't matter

  771. what was done.

  772. They wouldn't believe.

  773. That was the picture

  774. that Jesus was painting.

  775. And it was a word

  776. for that generation

  777. in verse 16.

  778. But it's a word

  779. for every generation.

  780. there are always

  781. people

  782. who will find

  783. reasons

  784. not to believe

  785. in Jesus.

  786. They exist

  787. in Harris.

  788. I expect

  789. they exist

  790. in Lewis

  791. as well.

  792. People who say

  793. I don't feel enough.

  794. If I could just

  795. feel a bit more.

  796. If I had more feelings

  797. a bit more conviction

  798. then I could believe.

  799. or I don't know

  800. enough to believe.

  801. I need to do more study

  802. I need to read more books

  803. and maybe when I get

  804. to a higher

  805. academic

  806. grasp

  807. of the things

  808. of God

  809. then I can believe

  810. but not yet.

  811. Then there's so many

  812. people who say

  813. you know

  814. I'm not good enough.

  815. I'm not good enough

  816. to be a believer.

  817. And the list

  818. can go on.

  819. Every

  820. generation

  821. every congregation

  822. will have

  823. some people

  824. who are

  825. experts

  826. in giving

  827. reason

  828. after reason

  829. for disbelief.

  830. unbelief.

  831. And Jesus

  832. saw it back then

  833. and he called

  834. them out on it

  835. and he sees

  836. it still today.

  837. And I wonder

  838. does he see

  839. any

  840. of that

  841. in you

  842. or in me?

  843. Disbelief

  844. is a

  845. serious thing.

  846. unbelief

  847. is a

  848. serious

  849. thing

  850. because

  851. it leads

  852. to eternal

  853. death

  854. and Jesus

  855. will make

  856. that crystal

  857. clear in the

  858. next section.

  859. That's the

  860. bad news.

  861. But the

  862. good news

  863. is that

  864. whoever

  865. believes

  866. in Jesus

  867. John 3

  868. 16

  869. shall

  870. not

  871. perish

  872. but

  873. shall

  874. have

  875. eternal

  876. life.

  877. What do

  878. we come

  879. to the

  880. table

  881. to say?

  882. We come

  883. to the

  884. table

  885. to say

  886. that we

  887. believe

  888. in Jesus.

  889. We're not

  890. coming to

  891. speak about

  892. ourselves.

  893. We're not

  894. coming because

  895. of the

  896. feelings

  897. that we

  898. have.

  899. We're not

  900. coming because

  901. we've reached

  902. a certain

  903. level of

  904. intellectual

  905. stature.

  906. We come

  907. in that

  908. simple

  909. childlike

  910. way

  911. to say

  912. that we

  913. believe

  914. in Jesus.

  915. That he is

  916. our

  917. savior.

  918. That he is

  919. our

  920. Lord.

  921. That we are

  922. trusting

  923. in his

  924. finished

  925. work.

  926. that we

  927. are

  928. remembering

  929. him.

  930. Doubt

  931. that has

  932. overcome

  933. disbelief

  934. that Jesus

  935. identifies

  936. and calls

  937. out.

  938. The third

  939. response that

  940. we see

  941. here is to

  942. dismiss

  943. Jesus.

  944. And we

  945. see that

  946. in verse

  947. 20 down

  948. to verse

  949. 24.

  950. Jesus

  951. addresses

  952. cities that

  953. were

  954. unrepentant,

  955. cities that

  956. had dismissed

  957. them.

  958. Then he

  959. began to

  960. denounce the

  961. cities where

  962. most of his

  963. mighty works

  964. had been

  965. done,

  966. because they

  967. did not

  968. repent.

  969. Woe to

  970. you,

  971. Chorazin.

  972. This is

  973. verse 21.

  974. Woe to

  975. you,

  976. Bethsaida,

  977. for if the

  978. mighty works

  979. done in you

  980. had been

  981. done in Tyre

  982. and Sidon,

  983. they would

  984. have repented

  985. long ago

  986. in sackcloth

  987. and ashes.

  988. But I tell

  989. you it would

  990. be more

  991. bearable in

  992. the day of

  993. judgment for

  994. Tyre and

  995. Sidon than

  996. for you.

  997. And so

  998. the words

  999. go on.

  1000. And I

  1001. think that

  1002. these words

  1003. that Jesus

  1004. speaks in

  1005. this section

  1006. are some of

  1007. the strongest

  1008. words that

  1009. are recorded

  1010. anywhere in

  1011. the Bible

  1012. that we

  1013. hear Jesus

  1014. speak.

  1015. He speaks

  1016. words of

  1017. woe,

  1018. he speaks

  1019. words of

  1020. judgment,

  1021. he speaks

  1022. words that

  1023. warn of

  1024. being brought

  1025. down to

  1026. Hades,

  1027. brought down

  1028. to hell.

  1029. Jesus talks

  1030. about

  1031. Sodom

  1032. in verse

  1033. 23.

  1034. And we're

  1035. not going

  1036. there tonight

  1037. but you can

  1038. take a tour

  1039. back to

  1040. Genesis 19

  1041. in your own

  1042. time and

  1043. see the

  1044. darkness and

  1045. the immorality

  1046. of that

  1047. place Sodom

  1048. and we can

  1049. read about

  1050. the judgment

  1051. of God

  1052. that fell

  1053. upon that

  1054. city.

  1055. And yet

  1056. alarmingly

  1057. Jesus says

  1058. in verse

  1059. 24,

  1060. it will be

  1061. more tolerable

  1062. on the

  1063. day of

  1064. judgment

  1065. for the

  1066. land of

  1067. Sodom

  1068. than for

  1069. you,

  1070. Capernaum.

  1071. And for

  1072. Chorazin

  1073. and Bethsaida,

  1074. Jesus warns

  1075. them of

  1076. incoming woe,

  1077. literally grief.

  1078. So we have

  1079. to ask the

  1080. question,

  1081. what did

  1082. these cities

  1083. do?

  1084. What is it

  1085. that Chorazin

  1086. and Bethsaida

  1087. and Capernaum

  1088. did that

  1089. prompted such

  1090. serious

  1091. words

  1092. from Jesus?

  1093. How did

  1094. they respond

  1095. to Jesus

  1096. that caused

  1097. Jesus to

  1098. speak to

  1099. them in

  1100. such terms?

  1101. And the

  1102. answer to

  1103. that question

  1104. is their

  1105. response to

  1106. Jesus,

  1107. what they

  1108. did in

  1109. terms of

  1110. responding to

  1111. Jesus is

  1112. they did

  1113. nothing.

  1114. They

  1115. dismissed

  1116. Jesus.

  1117. they just

  1118. ignored

  1119. him.

  1120. Jesus

  1121. performed

  1122. mighty

  1123. works

  1124. in these

  1125. cities

  1126. and he

  1127. preached

  1128. the most

  1129. amazing

  1130. sermons

  1131. that have

  1132. ever been

  1133. preached

  1134. and he

  1135. pled with

  1136. them

  1137. to repent

  1138. and yet

  1139. they would

  1140. not repent

  1141. they walked

  1142. out the

  1143. door

  1144. unrepentant

  1145. unmoved

  1146. they'd

  1147. heard the

  1148. gospel

  1149. plea

  1150. they'd

  1151. heard the

  1152. voice of

  1153. the

  1154. saviour

  1155. and they

  1156. looked at

  1157. their watches

  1158. and they

  1159. headed home

  1160. and they

  1161. did

  1162. nothing.

  1163. And Jesus

  1164. mentions Tyre

  1165. and Sidon.

  1166. Now the

  1167. people in

  1168. Chorazin

  1169. and Bethsaida

  1170. and Capernaum

  1171. they would

  1172. have looked

  1173. down their

  1174. noses

  1175. at Tyre

  1176. and Sidon

  1177. because they

  1178. were Gentiles.

  1179. They were

  1180. non-Jews.

  1181. They hadn't

  1182. had the

  1183. kind of

  1184. background

  1185. and the

  1186. upbringing

  1187. that these

  1188. cities had

  1189. had.

  1190. But Jesus

  1191. says if

  1192. they in

  1193. Tyre and

  1194. Sidon

  1195. had seen

  1196. and heard

  1197. what you've

  1198. seen and

  1199. heard

  1200. they would

  1201. have taken

  1202. notice.

  1203. They would

  1204. have repented

  1205. but not

  1206. you.

  1207. there were

  1208. so many

  1209. in these

  1210. privileged

  1211. cities

  1212. who

  1213. ignored

  1214. Jesus.

  1215. They

  1216. rejected

  1217. Jesus.

  1218. Not with

  1219. any kind

  1220. of violence.

  1221. There was

  1222. no heat

  1223. and violence

  1224. in their

  1225. rejection.

  1226. They just

  1227. seemed to

  1228. be too

  1229. busy.

  1230. that they

  1231. weren't

  1232. that

  1233. interested.

  1234. Their

  1235. lives were

  1236. cluttered.

  1237. Lots of

  1238. conflicting

  1239. priorities.

  1240. So they

  1241. dismissed

  1242. Jesus

  1243. and his

  1244. gospel.

  1245. and to

  1246. treat

  1247. Jesus

  1248. that way

  1249. causes

  1250. woe.

  1251. Jesus

  1252. teaches

  1253. us

  1254. that to

  1255. treat

  1256. Jesus

  1257. that way

  1258. by

  1259. dismissing

  1260. him

  1261. it

  1262. leads

  1263. down

  1264. to

  1265. hell.

  1266. Charles

  1267. Price

  1268. says

  1269. the

  1270. more

  1271. we

  1272. know

  1273. of

  1274. Christ

  1275. the

  1276. more

  1277. responsible

  1278. we

  1279. become.

  1280. So how

  1281. much do

  1282. we know

  1283. of

  1284. Jesus?

  1285. Jesus

  1286. well we

  1287. know

  1288. significantly

  1289. more

  1290. than

  1291. Chorazin

  1292. and

  1293. Bethsaida

  1294. and

  1295. Capernaum

  1296. did

  1297. because we

  1298. have a

  1299. New

  1300. Testament

  1301. and they

  1302. didn't.

  1303. And we

  1304. know about

  1305. the cross.

  1306. we

  1307. remember

  1308. that

  1309. Jesus

  1310. went to

  1311. the cross

  1312. to die

  1313. to pay

  1314. for our

  1315. sin

  1316. and they

  1317. didn't have

  1318. that knowledge.

  1319. They

  1320. couldn't yet

  1321. see that.

  1322. We know

  1323. about the

  1324. resurrection.

  1325. Of course

  1326. they didn't.

  1327. And we

  1328. have had

  1329. generations

  1330. of our

  1331. forefathers

  1332. teaching us

  1333. the good

  1334. news

  1335. about

  1336. Jesus.

  1337. We

  1338. have

  1339. enjoyed

  1340. great

  1341. privilege.

  1342. The

  1343. vast

  1344. majority

  1345. of us

  1346. although

  1347. I don't

  1348. know many

  1349. of you

  1350. the vast

  1351. majority

  1352. of us

  1353. here

  1354. I assume

  1355. we have

  1356. known

  1357. great

  1358. privilege.

  1359. privilege.

  1360. So let

  1361. me

  1362. leave the

  1363. application

  1364. with one

  1365. of the

  1366. commentators

  1367. leg.

  1368. He

  1369. says this

  1370. great

  1371. privilege

  1372. brings

  1373. great

  1374. responsibility.

  1375. Hearing the

  1376. gospel

  1377. week in

  1378. week out

  1379. knowing

  1380. the word

  1381. of God

  1382. being taught

  1383. the truth

  1384. from my

  1385. youth

  1386. or hearing

  1387. it regularly

  1388. in church

  1389. these are

  1390. great

  1391. privileges

  1392. but salvation

  1393. cannot be

  1394. taken for

  1395. granted.

  1396. Here is a

  1397. warning says

  1398. leg to

  1399. children brought

  1400. up in

  1401. Christian

  1402. homes to

  1403. those who

  1404. attend church

  1405. and who are

  1406. members of the

  1407. congregation

  1408. they must not

  1409. despise their

  1410. privileges but

  1411. must make sure

  1412. that they respond

  1413. in repentance

  1414. and faith.

  1415. Otherwise

  1416. there will

  1417. simply be a

  1418. greater and

  1419. more unbearable

  1420. punishment on

  1421. the day of

  1422. judgment.

  1423. Let none of

  1424. us this

  1425. evening walk

  1426. out the

  1427. door dismissing

  1428. Jesus.

  1429. Too busy.

  1430. Too

  1431. distracted.

  1432. Too much

  1433. going on.

  1434. Let none

  1435. of us

  1436. follow the

  1437. example of

  1438. these cities

  1439. that Jesus

  1440. warned

  1441. who heard

  1442. the gospel

  1443. who experienced

  1444. great privileges

  1445. but failed

  1446. to repent

  1447. and to

  1448. believe.

  1449. Maybe

  1450. there is

  1451. someone here

  1452. who knows

  1453. so much

  1454. who sat

  1455. in the

  1456. pews for

  1457. year after

  1458. year

  1459. who has

  1460. been through

  1461. Sunday

  1462. school and

  1463. YF and

  1464. all these

  1465. things but

  1466. hasn't yet

  1467. repented.

  1468. Don't

  1469. delay another

  1470. moment.

  1471. do not

  1472. dismiss

  1473. Jesus.

  1474. Repent.

  1475. Ask for

  1476. forgiveness.

  1477. Ask for

  1478. him to be

  1479. Savior and

  1480. Lord of

  1481. your life.

  1482. Everyone

  1483. who calls

  1484. on the

  1485. name of

  1486. the Lord

  1487. Jesus

  1488. will be

  1489. saved.

  1490. God

  1491. So we

  1492. see John

  1493. the Baptist

  1494. who

  1495. wrestles

  1496. with

  1497. doubts

  1498. and

  1499. they're

  1500. overcome.

  1501. We see

  1502. those that

  1503. Jesus

  1504. identifies

  1505. almost like

  1506. spoiled

  1507. children who

  1508. have every

  1509. reason not

  1510. to believe.

  1511. They're

  1512. disbelievers.

  1513. Jesus

  1514. challenges

  1515. them.

  1516. We see

  1517. cities who

  1518. are warned

  1519. of incoming

  1520. judgment

  1521. because of

  1522. the great

  1523. privileges that

  1524. they've

  1525. enjoyed and

  1526. yet they

  1527. dismiss

  1528. Jesus.

  1529. They're

  1530. too busy.

  1531. And the

  1532. final thing

  1533. we see

  1534. here is a

  1535. small group

  1536. of disciples

  1537. who are

  1538. devoted

  1539. to Jesus.

  1540. And just

  1541. as we

  1542. finish,

  1543. this is

  1544. what we're

  1545. taught

  1546. right running

  1547. through the

  1548. gospel.

  1549. This is

  1550. how we're

  1551. taught

  1552. how to

  1553. respond to

  1554. Jesus.

  1555. How are we

  1556. to respond

  1557. to Jesus?

  1558. We're to

  1559. respond to

  1560. Jesus

  1561. by devoting

  1562. our lives

  1563. to Him.

  1564. Not

  1565. dismissing

  1566. Him,

  1567. not doubting

  1568. His words,

  1569. not disbelieving,

  1570. but repenting

  1571. and believing

  1572. and devoting

  1573. our lives

  1574. to Him,

  1575. to the

  1576. one who

  1577. paid for

  1578. our salvation

  1579. with His

  1580. blood at

  1581. Calvary.

  1582. We are to

  1583. devote our

  1584. lives to

  1585. Him.

  1586. We see

  1587. at the

  1588. beginning of

  1589. the chapter

  1590. just a

  1591. small note.

  1592. At the

  1593. beginning of

  1594. this chapter

  1595. we see

  1596. the disciples

  1597. and we

  1598. can see

  1599. them in

  1600. our mind's

  1601. eye.

  1602. Jesus,

  1603. He's

  1604. instructing

  1605. these 12

  1606. disciples,

  1607. they're

  1608. gathered

  1609. around Him.

  1610. And what

  1611. were the

  1612. disciples

  1613. called to?

  1614. They were

  1615. called to

  1616. a life

  1617. of being

  1618. with

  1619. Jesus,

  1620. of being

  1621. instructed

  1622. by Jesus,

  1623. of being

  1624. devoted

  1625. to Jesus.

  1626. And that's

  1627. what we're

  1628. called to.

  1629. the gospel

  1630. went out

  1631. so that

  1632. all who

  1633. hear and

  1634. believe

  1635. will be

  1636. disciples,

  1637. those whose

  1638. lives are

  1639. devoted to

  1640. Jesus.

  1641. Mark

    Mark 3:14

  1642. chapter 3

  1643. verse 14.

  1644. It's one of

  1645. my favorite

  1646. verses and

  1647. it's so

  1648. simple.

  1649. Jesus

  1650. appointed

  1651. 12,

  1652. whom He

  1653. named also

  1654. apostles,

  1655. that they

  1656. might be

  1657. with Him.

  1658. And that

  1659. is our

  1660. calling

  1661. tonight.

  1662. That's the

  1663. calling of a

  1664. disciple.

  1665. If I was to

  1666. ask you,

  1667. tell me about a

  1668. disciple,

  1669. what's a

  1670. disciple?

  1671. I think the

  1672. majority of

  1673. us would

  1674. probably say,

  1675. well,

  1676. a disciple

  1677. is someone

  1678. who does

  1679. this and

  1680. does that

  1681. and does

  1682. the next

  1683. thing.

  1684. They're

  1685. called to

  1686. serve Jesus

  1687. and they're

  1688. called to

  1689. do this

  1690. and all

  1691. that,

  1692. and all

  1693. that's

  1694. true.

  1695. But the

  1696. primary call

  1697. for the

  1698. disciples back

  1699. then,

  1700. and the

  1701. primary call

  1702. for disciples

  1703. here and

  1704. now,

  1705. is a

  1706. call to

  1707. be with

  1708. Jesus.

  1709. So are

  1710. we with

  1711. Him?

  1712. That's how

  1713. we finish.

  1714. Are we

  1715. with Him?

  1716. Are we

  1717. trusting

  1718. Jesus as

  1719. our Savior?

  1720. Are we

  1721. following

  1722. Jesus as

  1723. our Lord

  1724. and our

  1725. King?

  1726. if not,

  1727. that's

  1728. what He

  1729. calls us

  1730. to tonight,

  1731. to devote

  1732. our lives

  1733. to Him.

  1734. And if

  1735. there are

  1736. any of us

  1737. this evening

  1738. who are

  1739. Christians but

  1740. we are

  1741. drifting,

  1742. as we

  1743. are prone

  1744. to,

  1745. then as

  1746. we approach

  1747. the table,

  1748. let us

  1749. take this

  1750. opportunity

  1751. once more

  1752. to confess

  1753. the distance

  1754. if there's

  1755. drift

  1756. and to

  1757. devote

  1758. our lives

  1759. to Christ

  1760. afresh.

  1761. That we

  1762. may be

  1763. with Him,

  1764. that we

  1765. may abide

  1766. in Him,

  1767. that we

  1768. may remain

  1769. in Him.

  1770. and know

  1771. the blessing

  1772. and the

  1773. fruit that

  1774. comes from

  1775. being in

  1776. that place.

  1777. And if

  1778. we are

  1779. with Him,

  1780. then what

  1781. does He

  1782. call us

  1783. to do?

  1784. Where does

  1785. He call

  1786. us to be

  1787. this

  1788. Lord's

  1789. day?

  1790. He calls

  1791. us to

  1792. be at

  1793. the table.

  1794. Maybe

  1795. there's

  1796. someone here

  1797. tonight who

  1798. is a

  1799. secret

  1800. believer.

  1801. You've

  1802. asked for

  1803. forgiveness.

  1804. you've

  1805. asked Jesus

  1806. to be

  1807. Lord.

  1808. But

  1809. communion

  1810. season by

  1811. communion

  1812. season,

  1813. the profession

  1814. that you

  1815. make from

  1816. the place

  1817. that you

  1818. sit is

  1819. that you

  1820. are not

  1821. with Him.

  1822. Hear the

  1823. call once

  1824. more,

  1825. the command

  1826. that comes

  1827. from Jesus.

  1828. if you

  1829. are trusting

  1830. Him,

  1831. if you

  1832. are saved

  1833. by His

  1834. blood.

  1835. And hear

  1836. His command

  1837. to do

  1838. this,

  1839. to come

  1840. to the

  1841. table,

  1842. to be

  1843. with Him

  1844. openly,

  1845. and to

  1846. remember

  1847. all that

  1848. He has

  1849. done for

  1850. our salvation.

  1851. let's

  1852. pray.

  1853. Heavenly

  1854. Father,

  1855. we thank

  1856. You for

  1857. Your Word.

  1858. We pray

  1859. that You

  1860. would help

  1861. us as

  1862. we face

  1863. the challenge

  1864. of it,

  1865. as we

  1866. take time

  1867. to meditate

  1868. upon it.

  1869. We thank

  1870. You for

  1871. the encouragement

  1872. that there

  1873. is as we

  1874. hear the

  1875. words of

  1876. Jesus.

  1877. us,

  1878. and we

  1879. pray that

  1880. as You

  1881. search our

  1882. hearts,

  1883. that You

  1884. would work

  1885. in each

  1886. one of our

  1887. hearts and

  1888. lives,

  1889. that we

  1890. may hear

  1891. the call

  1892. of Christ,

  1893. and that we

  1894. may come

  1895. in repentance,

  1896. in faith,

  1897. in obedience.

  1898. We pray this

  1899. in Jesus.

  1900. From Psalm

  1916. with eagerness.

  1917. My soul

  1918. and body

  1945. I've seen

  1946. you in

  1947. your holy

  1948. place,

  1949. your power

  1950. and glory

  1951. held my gaze.

  1952. Far better

  1953. is

  1954. your love

  1955. and life

  1956. and so

  1957. my lips

  1958. will sing

  1959. your praise.

  1960. I'll bless

  1961. you, Lord,

  1962. throughout

  1967. in prayer.

  1968. my joy

  1969. to live

  1970. with

  1971. senior

  1972. praise.

  1973. My soul

  1974. is

  1975. fed

  1976. with

  1977. riches

  1978. clear.

  1979. upon

  1980. upon

  1981. my bed

  1982. I

  1983. lie

  1984. awake

  1985. and

  1986. in

  1987. my

  1988. thoughts

  1989. remember

  1990. you.

  1991. I

  1992. meditate

  1993. throughout

  1994. the

  1995. night

  1996. and keep

  1997. your

  1998. constant

  1999. love

  2000. in

  2001. you.

  2002. Because

  2003. You

  2004. are

  2005. my

  2006. help

  2007. alone,

  2008. in

  2009. shadow

  2010. all

  2011. Your

  2012. wings

  2013. I

  2014. sing.

  2015. You

  2016. hold

  2017. me

  2018. up

  2019. with

  2020. Your

  2021. right

  2042. of God

  2043. the Holy

  2044. Spirit

  2045. be with us

  2046. all now

  2047. and forever

  2048. more.

  2049. Amen.

  2050. Amen.

  2051. Amen.
