  1. You may have noticed that David's voice was nearly giving in this morning.

  2. ! My own's not much better, so that's why there's three of us in the pulpit this evening.

  3. If I fail, David will take over. If he fails, we can call on Roddy John.

  4. But we are going to share out the load this evening, so I'll be doing the first part, just introducing the singings,

  5. and then David will take over when it comes to the reading and the sermon part.

  6. So we just pray for David as he leads us this evening, as his voice will hold out, and also as we go into the fellowship too.

  7. So we're going to begin our worship, and I just want to think of the words of, we're not going to sing these words,

  8. but the words of Psalm 126. We're going to sing in Psalm 100, but the words of 126 remind us that as we come this evening,

  9. we come just thankful to the Lord's goodness to us. The psalmist says,

  10. When Sion's bondage God turned back, as men that dreamed were we, then filled with laughter was our mouth, our tongue with melody.

  11. As we reflect on this weekend, as we reflect on new members coming in, as we reflect on being under God's word,

  12. we thank God who is the one who is able to turn his people back to himself, to bring his people home, as it were.

  13. And we pray that this evening, as the word of God goes out, the call to come will be heard,

  14. and that there will be much rejoicing in our midst again this evening.

  15. And so we're going to begin by singing in Psalm 100, the Scottish Psalter, the first version.

  16. You find it on page 362.

  17. We'll sing the whole of this psalm, Psalm 100, the first version.

  18. Again, the psalm just reflects the theme of coming to the Lord with praise.

  19. All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice,

  20. and say with mouth his praise forth tell,

  21. Come ye before him and rejoice.

  22. We'll stand to sing the whole of this psalm to God's praise.

  23. Amen.

  24. All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice,

  25. and say with mouth his praise forth tell,

  26. Come ye before him and rejoice.

  27. Come ye before him and rejoice.

  28. Show that the Lord is God indeed.

  29. With the giant he in the spring,

  30. We are his hope he doth us see,

  31. And for his sheep he doth us take.

  32. O enter then his gates with praise,

  33. Approach with joy his course and doom,

  34. Praise God and bless his name always,

  35. All of his mercy be upon him and glory his name always,

  36. All of his mercy be upon him and glory his name always,

  37. For why the Lord our God is good,

  38. His mercy is forever sure,

  39. His mercy is forever sure,

  40. His mercy is forever sure,

  41. And shall promise to his mercy endure.

  42. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  43. Let us pray.

  44. Let us pray.

  45. Lord our gracious God, as we gather in your name this evening, we thank you for these words of praise that we have sung,

  46. That we are reminded of how we enter into your presence,

  47. How we come before you in all our different needs and in all our different circumstances,

  48. Yet able to come,

  49. Because you have prepared a way for us,

  50. That you are the one who has invited us into your very presence,

  51. Indeed who calls us to come.

  52. And we pray that we would have the joy of this psalm even in our hearts this evening,

  53. That we would be able to sing to the Lord with that cheerful voice,

  54. The one who has heard us,

  55. The one who knows us,

  56. That we would come to know that you are the Lord indeed,

  57. That you are God over all,

  58. That without you, Lord, we are nothing,

  59. That you are the one who has made us,

  60. Created us,

  61. Formed us,

  62. The one who has kept us,

  63. The one who has prepared a way for us,

  64. In all your providence towards us as a people, Lord.

  65. So often there are times of joy, but also times of sorrow,

  66. And yet, O Lord, we can look to you as the one who has plans and purposes in them all.

  67. And so we do come leaning upon you.

  68. We come in our own weaknesses, our own frailties.

  69. And yet, Lord, we thank you that the joy of the Lord is our strength.

  70. And we pray to know you with us this evening.

  71. We thank you for every way that you have reminded us that you are God in these days.

  72. That as we have come into this communion season,

  73. We have come praying to know your blessing.

  74. And we thank you that as we come to the close of this season,

  75. That we can look back in these days and truly rejoice and give thanks that you are one who has answered prayer.

  76. That you have given us so many reasons to rejoice.

  77. You have given it in individual situations and homes and families.

  78. You have given it to us as a congregation.

  79. You have given it to us even as a community, a wider community even than our own town here.

  80. For we thank you that in every way, Lord, that we have been encouraged.

  81. That we have been built up and even challenged and convicted by your word.

  82. For your word is truth and your word is powerful.

  83. And, oh Lord, in every way that we have been reminded of that.

  84. From the outset of our services, Lord, even to this evening hour,

  85. We thank you for your word that shall always endure.

  86. That your truth is what stands firm and endures from age to age.

  87. And we thank you that that truth is what we so need this evening.

  88. What we all need is a people.

  89. And we pray that through the ministry of your word and by your power of your spirit,

  90. That you would meet us in all our needs.

  91. We thank you for all who are here this evening.

  92. We thank you for every home and family represented here.

  93. We pray that we would just know your peace, your presence over us again here tonight.

  94. That we would know what it is to be still.

  95. And to know that you are indeed God.

  96. And we just ask that, Lord, for all of us here, from the youngest to the oldest together.

  97. That your voice which we have heard and which we continue to hear would resonate in our hearts.

  98. That it would be a word that leaves us, doesn't leave us unchanged as we go from here this evening.

  99. For we thank you that as we gather in this place tonight, when we know a place of peace,

  100. When we know the stillness of your word ministering to us.

  101. We know that power.

  102. But we know too, as we look to our week ahead, that there will be the many challenges that come our way.

  103. That as we go home this evening, as we go into the week ahead, with all that it might entail to us.

  104. Many of the plans that we have made, Lord, they may come to fruition.

  105. We may go about our daily ways, whether it's school or work or whatever we are doing.

  106. We can do all these things, Lord, thinking that we have plans in place and we know what is ahead of us.

  107. But we know too, Lord, that there are so often reminders that circumstances change.

  108. That things change in our lives or the lives around us, in our communities, even in our nation and the world.

  109. There are so many things that come that we do not see.

  110. And we, at times, Lord, we do not even understand.

  111. And we know that for individuals in this week ahead, there will be maybe many challenges that we have to face up to.

  112. News that will come as a shock to us, whether it's personal or something around us.

  113. And we know that things can leave us, Lord, in that state of looking to try to understand and many questions being asked.

  114. And we just pray for your wisdom and for your help, for your grace to be with us.

  115. We think that even looking back over this last week, as we have prayed so often over these days for the family in Braga.

  116. We continue to remember them this evening, Lord, and especially in these days ahead with the funeral to take place on Tuesday.

  117. We see a community, O Lord, that has been so impacted by that tragedy.

  118. But we especially remember the family, Lord, and we just commit them to you.

  119. That they would know, Lord, that you are near.

  120. That they would know that, as a people, there are many praying for them.

  121. And that they would know the power of your grace and your help towards them.

  122. And we just pray, Lord, that as we see so much happening in our world, that may it leave us with questions.

  123. That we would come to the one who has the answers for us.

  124. Even the ones that are difficult to understand and believe at times.

  125. Even the words that we read so often in Scripture, that all things work together for good.

  126. For those who believe.

  127. We can see, Lord, how difficult these words are at times.

  128. And yet they remind us that you are a Lord and God who is able to bring good out of all things.

  129. And so we do pray, Lord, for your goodness and mercy to be with us.

  130. We pray, Lord, for us all together this evening.

  131. Thankful for the ministry we've enjoyed over this weekend.

  132. Thankful for David and Roddy John who have been with us.

  133. Thankful for their preaching to us.

  134. And for the fellowship we've enjoyed.

  135. And for all that we've heard.

  136. We pray, Lord, that these words that have ministered powerfully to us.

  137. Would be ministering to us even in the days, weeks, months and even years ahead.

  138. That we'd be able to reflect on what we have heard.

  139. And to remember the words that spoke to us.

  140. It may be that in many years time we are able to testify that God was good to us.

  141. Even in these days.

  142. And so we pray, Lord, that you will open hearts.

  143. And ears this evening to hear what you have to say to us.

  144. Bless us together and bless the ministry of your word far and wide.

  145. Even as we think of our town just now as this communion weekend.

  146. We pray for all the congregations of your people gathered together.

  147. And we pray for the communions to come as well in different parts of our island.

  148. That we would see and hear great and wondrous things that the Lord is doing.

  149. And that we would rejoice and say this is the doing of the Lord and wondrous in our eyes.

  150. So may, Lord, you fill us with that hope that you are to your people.

  151. That you would fill us with that prayerful spirit.

  152. To know you leading us as our Lord, as our shepherd.

  153. Hear our prayers. Continue with us.

  154. Pardoning all our sin is all we ask.

  155. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  156. We'll sing again to God's praise.

  157. This time we're singing in Psalm 103.

  158. And let's sing Psalm's version.

  159. Psalm 103.

  160. We're going to sing from verse 1 down to verse 11.

  161. Praise God, my soul, with all my heart.

  162. Let me exalt his holy name.

  163. Forget not all his benefits.

  164. His praise, my soul, in song proclaim.

  165. The Lord forgives you all your sins and heals your sickness and distress.

  166. Your life he rescues from the grave and crowns you in his tenderness.

  167. We'll sing from verse 1 to 11.

  168. And then at that point, David will lead us in the rest of the service.

  169. Jesus says.

  170. He satisfies you all your sins and heals your sickness and distress.

  171. Your life he rescues from the grave and crowns you in his tenderness.

  172. Unkind to end his tenderness.

  173. He satisfies your deep desires.

  174. From his unending stores all good.

  175. So not just like the eagle's strength.

  176. Your youthful name of his renewed.

  177. The Lord is known for righteousness.

  178. And justice to them, God and once.

  179. Till Moses he may know his ways.

  180. His mighty deeds to Israel's sons.

  181. His mighty deeds to Israel's sons.

  182. The Lord is merciful and kind.

  183. To anger slow and full of praise.

  184. He will not constantly reprove.

  185. All in his anger hide his grace.

  186. He does not punish our misdeeds.

  187. For give our sins.

  188. For give our sins their just reward.

  189. Our greatest love must hide at heaven.

  190. To watch all those who fear the Lord.

  191. To watch all those who fear the Lord.

  192. To watch all those who fear the Lord.

  193. If I could ask you now please to turn in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  194. Page 983 of the Bible that I have here.

  195. Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  196. And we will read this section from verse 22 to verse 32.

  197. Verse 32.

  198. Then a demon oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to Jesus.

  199. And he healed him so that the man spoke and saw.

  200. And all the people were amazed and said,

  201. Can this be the son of David?

  202. But when the Pharisees heard it, they said,

  203. It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.

  204. Knowing their thoughts, he said to them,

  205. Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste.

  206. And no city or house divided against itself will stand.

  207. And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself.

  208. How then will his kingdom stand?

  209. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out?

  210. Therefore they will be your judges.

  211. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons,

  212. Then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

  213. Or how can someone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods?

  214. Unless he first binds the strong man, then indeed he may plunder his house.

  215. Whoever is not with me is against me.

  216. And whoever does not gather with me scatters.

  217. Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people.

  218. But the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

  219. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven.

  220. But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

  221. Either in this age or in the age to come.

  222. Amen.

  223. And may God bless that reading of his word to us.

  224. We'll sing again now from the Scottish altar,

  225. The traditional version of Psalm 119 on page number 407.

  226. Psalm 119.

  227. And we will sing from verses 89 down to the end of verse 94.

  228. Psalm 139.

  229. Psalm 139.

  230. Psalm 139.

  231. Psalm 139.

  232. Psalm 139.

  233. Psalm 139.

  234. Psalm 139.

  235. Psalm 139.

  236. Psalm 139.

  237. Psalm 139.

  238. Psalm 139.

  239. Psalm 139.

  240. Psalm 139.

  241. when, as my troubles did abound,

  242. thy precepts I will ne'er forget,

  243. thy quickening to me brought.

  244. Lord, I am thine, O save thou me,

  245. thy precepts I have sought.

  246. These verses we stand to sing to God's praise.

  247. The Lord, I am thine, O save thou me,

  248. thy best, and as my mortgings,

  249. on all thy servants be.

  250. Unless in thy most perfect law

  251. my soul delights have found,

  252. I should have perished yet

  253. when, as my troubles did abound,

  254. thy precepts I will ne'er forget,

  255. they quickening to me brought.

  256. Lord, I am thine, O save thou me,

  257. thy precepts I have sought.

  258. If you could turn back with me, please,

  259. to Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  260. And as we go there, let's again

  261. unite our hearts in prayer.

  262. Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word.

  263. We thank you that your word is truth.

  264. Your word is reliable.

  265. Your word is enduring.

  266. We thank you that your word is life-giving.

  267. We thank you that eternal life is found only

  268. in turning to your word

  269. and looking to the Lord Jesus.

  270. We thank you that that eternal life is promised

  271. to all who will come

  272. in response to the call of Christ,

  273. to all who will call upon the name of the Lord Jesus.

  274. We thank you that you are the Savior.

  275. We thank you for all that we have remembered today

  276. that he did on our behalf

  277. to make it possible for us to be saved.

  278. We praise you for the fact, Lord Jesus,

  279. that the work of salvation is done.

  280. It is finished.

  281. And we pray that you would enable us to see that,

  282. each one of us,

  283. and enable us to come

  284. with empty hands,

  285. with humble hearts,

  286. asking for the grace

  287. that we can never work to earn,

  288. but you have promised

  289. that you will freely give to all who ask.

  290. So be at work, Lord, amongst us, we pray.

  291. We pray especially for anyone here

  292. who does not yet know Jesus

  293. in that personal, saving way.

  294. We pray for any who may be here

  295. who have heard the message of the gospel many times,

  296. who have heard time after time

  297. the call of Jesus to come,

  298. and who have hesitated,

  299. and who have reflected,

  300. and who have made up excuses,

  301. and who have sometimes been so busy

  302. and distracted

  303. that they have said,

  304. well, maybe another day,

  305. maybe another week.

  306. You have promised, Lord,

  307. that you will not always strive with us.

  308. The Spirit will not always strive with man.

  309. And we see that even in the passage

  310. that's before us this evening.

  311. We pray that you would strive, Holy Spirit,

  312. with each one of us here,

  313. and that tonight,

  314. there may be some

  315. who even for the first time

  316. respond by

  317. asking Christ to be their Savior

  318. and their Lord.

  319. So help us, Lord, we pray,

  320. in preaching,

  321. in listening,

  322. in responding,

  323. that you would speak

  324. into our lives,

  325. and that you would give us the faith

  326. to respond in a way

  327. that brings salvation,

  328. rest, peace,

  329. to our souls,

  330. and glory to your name.

  331. Hear our prayers.

  332. Continue with us,

  333. we ask in Jesus' name.

  334. Amen.

  335. Amen.

  336. Amen.

  337. It's good to see quite a number

  338. of young people

  339. here this evening,

  340. and I'm conscious

  341. with the young people

  342. that this is the time of year

  343. where exams loom large.

  344. I've got teenage girls

  345. in my house back in Harris,

  346. and they've just finished

  347. their prelims,

  348. and now there's the prospect

  349. of other exams coming,

  350. and so there's studying

  351. that's done,

  352. and there is preparations

  353. that are made

  354. because there are questions

  355. that are set,

  356. and students,

  357. in each of the subjects

  358. that they study,

  359. they have to think carefully

  360. about how they answer

  361. these questions that are set

  362. because the way they answer

  363. the questions

  364. determines how they will be judged

  365. by examiners,

  366. and sometimes it can even

  367. determine the direction

  368. that life takes.

  369. So questions are important,

  370. and how we answer questions

  371. are important.

  372. And with Matthew chapter 12 open,

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  373. I want to zoom in

  374. on a question

  375. that is at the heart

  376. of this chapter,

  377. a question that all the people

  378. were asking about Jesus.

  379. and it's a question

  380. that was being asked

  381. all these years ago,

  382. and yet this is a question

  383. that not just them,

  384. but every one of us

  385. will have to answer.

  386. And the way that we answer

  387. this question

  388. will impact

  389. not just how we live

  390. in this world,

  391. although it will impact

  392. how we live in this world,

  393. but how we answer

  394. this question

  395. will have an impact

  396. that will determine

  397. where we spend

  398. eternity,

  399. whether it's heaven

  400. or hell,

  401. with Jesus

  402. or apart from him.

  403. The question is found

  404. in verse 23.

  405. We hear

  406. the people asking,

  407. can this,

  408. as they look at Jesus,

  409. say, listen to what he's saying,

  410. as they see these signs

  411. and miracles,

  412. they ask the question,

  413. can this be

  414. the son of David?

  415. Or if we were to put it

  416. into modern day language,

  417. they're asking the question,

  418. who is Jesus?

  419. Can this be the saviour?

  420. Can this be

  421. the son of God?

  422. Three points in the time

  423. that we have

  424. this evening.

  425. The first point

  426. is

  427. the blind man.

  428. We're introduced here

  429. to a blind man.

  430. And we learn

  431. in this passage

  432. that the blind man

  433. sees Jesus.

  434. It's the first point.

  435. The blind man

  436. sees Jesus.

  437. The second thing,

  438. the second point

  439. that we come to

  440. is

  441. we once more

  442. encounter

  443. these religious leaders

  444. in this passage

  445. and we can observe

  446. that the seeing men

  447. or the so-called

  448. seeing men,

  449. they're blind to Jesus.

  450. So the blind man

  451. sees Jesus,

  452. but the so-called

  453. theologically educated

  454. seeing men,

  455. they're blind to Jesus.

  456. They can't see Jesus.

  457. And the final point

  458. that we come to

  459. is

  460. it's not the most concise

  461. heading I've got here,

  462. but it's

  463. dealing with the teaching

  464. that Jesus

  465. expounds here

  466. and it's to

  467. say that

  468. blasphemy against

  469. the Holy Spirit

  470. is to refuse

  471. to believe

  472. in Jesus.

  473. So that's the structure.

  474. That's where we're going

  475. in the time

  476. that we have.

  477. So we begin

  478. with this

  479. blind man

  480. who sees Jesus.

  481. Look at verse 22.

  482. Then a demon

  483. oppressed man

  484. who was blind

  485. and mute

  486. was brought to Jesus

  487. and Jesus

  488. healed him

  489. so that the man

  490. spoke

  491. and saw.

  492. So what Matthew

  493. does here

  494. is he shares

  495. with us

  496. a very short

  497. testimony.

  498. He tells us

  499. about a man

  500. who was both

  501. blind

  502. and mute.

  503. He couldn't see

  504. and he couldn't speak.

  505. But Matthew

  506. tells us

  507. not just about

  508. the symptoms

  509. the struggles

  510. that this man

  511. had.

  512. He tells us

  513. also the reason

  514. behind the struggles.

  515. He tells us

  516. in verse 22

  517. that he was

  518. demon oppressed.

  519. That's what was

  520. going on

  521. in this man's

  522. life.

  523. He was under attack.

  524. One of Satan's

  525. agents

  526. had this man

  527. under a

  528. dark oppression

  529. and so he's

  530. suffering.

  531. Who is the man?

  532. Well we don't

  533. know much about

  534. the man.

  535. We're not told

  536. his name.

  537. We're not told

  538. anything much

  539. about him.

  540. But maybe that's

  541. a purposeful

  542. thing.

  543. because as we

  544. look in at

  545. this man

  546. spiritually

  547. speaking

  548. we're looking

  549. into the mirror

  550. and we're

  551. seeing a

  552. reflection

  553. of ourselves.

  554. Spiritually

  555. speaking

  556. we are

  557. this man.

  558. Psalm 51

    Psalms 51:6

  559. verse 6

  560. we sang

  561. from Psalm 51

  562. this morning

  563. and that

  564. psalm makes

  565. it clear to

  566. us that

  567. we are

  568. each one

  569. of us

  570. born with

  571. a condition

  572. called

  573. sin.

  574. And sin

  575. makes us

  576. blind.

  577. We can't

  578. see God.

  579. We can't

  580. see our

  581. need of

  582. God.

  583. That's what

  584. sin does.

  585. We can see

  586. everything else.

  587. Our eyes

  588. are distracted

  589. and drawn to

  590. lots of

  591. shiny things

  592. in this

  593. world.

  594. Our eyes

  595. focus in

  596. on ourselves

  597. but sin

  598. is like

  599. scales

  600. that

  601. cluster

  602. around

  603. our eyes

  604. and we

  605. can't

  606. see God

  607. and our

  608. need of

  609. him.

  610. And sin

  611. makes us

  612. mute.

  613. It's sin

  614. that causes

  615. us not

  616. to want to

  617. speak to

  618. God.

  619. It's sin

  620. that causes

  621. us to

  622. be speaking

  623. to everybody

  624. else

  625. whether

  626. it's in

  627. conversation

  628. or these

  629. days it's

  630. in message

  631. form

  632. and yet

  633. never

  634. praying,

  635. never

  636. speaking to

  637. God.

  638. So spiritually

  639. speaking,

  640. as we look

  641. in on this

  642. man, we

  643. are with

  644. this man.

  645. So what

  646. happened

  647. next?

  648. Well, what we

  649. see here is

  650. that this man

  651. was brought

  652. to Jesus

  653. and Jesus

  654. healed him.

  655. We're not

  656. given the

  657. details.

  658. We're not

  659. given much

  660. in terms of

  661. the details

  662. of how that

  663. healing happened.

  664. We're just

  665. told that

  666. Jesus healed

  667. this man.

  668. man.

  669. And the

  670. good news

  671. is that

  672. what Jesus

  673. did for

  674. this man

  675. in the

  676. passage,

  677. he can

  678. do for

  679. us by

  680. his power

  681. and by

  682. his grace.

  683. You

  684. know the

  685. hymn that

  686. is often

  687. sung,

  688. Amazing

  689. Grace,

  690. how sweet

  691. the sound

  692. that saved

  693. a wretch

  694. like me.

  695. I once

  696. was lost

  697. but now

  698. I'm found,

  699. was blind

  700. but now

  701. I see

  702. the testimony

  703. in song

  704. form of

  705. this man.

  706. Jesus

  707. made this

  708. blind man

  709. see and

  710. Jesus can

  711. still make

  712. spiritually blind

  713. people see.

  714. Jesus can

  715. still take

  716. us from

  717. that state

  718. of

  719. darkness

  720. into light.

  721. He can

  722. take us

  723. from

  724. death

  725. into life.

  726. So come

  727. to him

  728. says Matthew

  729. repeatedly.

  730. We've been

  731. in this

  732. all weekend.

  733. There's that

  734. recurring

  735. call,

  736. the gospel

  737. call.

  738. It's

  739. come to

  740. Jesus.

  741. It's

  742. great that

  743. you're

  744. coming to

  745. church

  746. but it's

  747. possible to

  748. come to

  749. church and

  750. never come

  751. to Jesus.

  752. It's

  753. possible to

  754. come to

  755. Sunday

  756. school,

  757. Sunday

  758. after Sunday

  759. and come

  760. to YF

  761. and go to

  762. fellowships

  763. and never

  764. come to

  765. Jesus.

  766. So come to

  767. him,

  768. says Matthew.

  769. Jesus can

  770. take our

  771. sin away.

  772. He can

  773. break the

  774. hold that

  775. Satan has

  776. in us.

  777. He can

  778. make our

  779. hearts

  780. well.

  781. He can

  782. heal our

  783. hearts.

  784. So come

  785. to him,

  786. says Matthew,

  787. as he

  788. tells us

  789. about this

  790. account here

  791. because notice

  792. that's what

  793. happened here.

  794. In verse

  795. 22,

  796. we can

  797. see that

  798. the demon

  799. oppressed

  800. man,

  801. he was

  802. brought to

  803. Jesus.

  804. He

  805. himself

  806. couldn't

  807. see Jesus.

  808. And he

  809. couldn't

  810. see his

  811. need of

  812. Jesus,

  813. but he

  814. had friends

  815. who could

  816. see that

  817. he needed

  818. Jesus.

  819. And this

  820. man, he

  821. couldn't

  822. speak to

  823. Jesus,

  824. but his

  825. friends could

  826. speak to

  827. Jesus on

  828. his behalf.

  829. And so

  830. they brought

  831. him.

  832. I don't

  833. know how

  834. he felt.

  835. Maybe he

  836. was reluctant.

  837. Maybe there's

  838. people here

  839. tonight.

  840. You've been

  841. brought to

  842. church.

  843. You

  844. wouldn't have

  845. chosen to

  846. come,

  847. maybe.

  848. You'd

  849. maybe be

  850. rather

  851. watching the

  852. football.

  853. But you've

  854. been brought

  855. to church

  856. by parents

  857. who know

  858. that you

  859. need

  860. Jesus.

  861. And you

  862. know,

  863. that's our

  864. calling,

  865. not just as

  866. parents,

  867. but if we

  868. are Christians,

  869. we are to

  870. bring people

  871. to Jesus.

  872. We're to

  873. tell people

  874. about Jesus,

  875. but then

  876. before we

  877. speak to

  878. people about

  879. Jesus,

  880. we first

  881. have to

  882. speak to

  883. Jesus about

  884. them.

  885. We have

  886. to pray

  887. for them.

  888. We have

  889. to tell

  890. Jesus about

  891. the friends

  892. that we

  893. love,

  894. that we

  895. have concern

  896. for,

  897. and ask

  898. him

  899. to heal

  900. their hearts,

  901. to open

  902. their eyes,

  903. to unblock

  904. their ears,

  905. to loosen

  906. their tongues

  907. that they

  908. would come

  909. to Jesus.

  910. So,

  911. just before

  912. we move

  913. on,

  914. maybe I

  915. could just

  916. pause to

  917. ask those

  918. who are

  919. Christians

  920. here tonight,

  921. a very

  922. practical

  923. question.

  924. Who are

  925. you praying

  926. for?

  927. for?

  928. I want you

  929. to think

  930. about that

  931. for a

  932. moment.

  933. And in

  934. your minds,

  935. in your

  936. hearts,

  937. in the

  938. silence,

  939. bring the

  940. names.

  941. What

  942. friends,

  943. what family

  944. members,

  945. what

  946. colleagues

  947. are you

  948. praying for?

  949. hear the

  950. names,

  951. as you

  952. think

  953. through in

  954. your minds.

  955. We should

  956. all be

  957. praying for

  958. two or

  959. three or

  960. four or

  961. five or

  962. ten people.

  963. Who are

  964. you burdened

  965. for?

  966. Who do

  967. you want

  968. to bring

  969. to Jesus?

  970. Jesus,

  971. Jesus,

  972. let's

  973. ensure

  974. that we

  975. are

  976. specific,

  977. that we

  978. are personal,

  979. that we

  980. are praying

  981. day by

  982. day for

  983. these people

  984. and asking

  985. the Lord

  986. to give

  987. us

  988. opportunities

  989. to tell

  990. them

  991. about

  992. Jesus.

  993. The

  994. blind

  995. man

  996. sees

  997. Jesus,

  998. that's

  999. the first

  1000. point.

  1001. The

  1002. second

  1003. point is

  1004. the

  1005. seeing

  1006. men or

  1007. the so

  1008. called

  1009. seeing

  1010. men.

  1011. They're

  1012. blind to

  1013. Jesus.

  1014. We saw

  1015. something of

  1016. this on

  1017. Friday night.

  1018. We see

  1019. it again

  1020. in verse

  1021. 23 and

  1022. following.

  1023. We see

  1024. first of

  1025. all in

  1026. verse 23

  1027. we overhear

  1028. all the

  1029. people.

  1030. All the

  1031. people were

  1032. amazed.

  1033. They've

  1034. just witnessed

  1035. !

  1036. This

  1037. healing!

  1038. And the

  1039. people are

  1040. amazed and

  1041. they said,

  1042. can this

  1043. be the

  1044. son of

  1045. David?

  1046. So the

  1047. people were

  1048. the crowds.

  1049. The

  1050. people were

  1051. the ordinary

  1052. people.

  1053. They're just

  1054. like us.

  1055. They knew a

  1056. bit of the

  1057. Bible,

  1058. but the

  1059. people,

  1060. the crowds,

  1061. they didn't

  1062. have a

  1063. theological

  1064. education.

  1065. And yet

  1066. they know

  1067. enough of

  1068. the Old

  1069. Testament to

  1070. be starting

  1071. to get

  1072. excited about

  1073. Jesus.

  1074. Jesus.

  1075. And so

  1076. they say,

  1077. can this

  1078. be the

  1079. son of

  1080. David?

  1081. The

  1082. son of

  1083. David was

  1084. a title

  1085. that was

  1086. reserved for

  1087. the Messiah.

  1088. So they're

  1089. asking,

  1090. could this

  1091. Jesus be

  1092. the Messiah?

  1093. Could he be

  1094. the promised

  1095. one of

  1096. God?

  1097. Could he

  1098. be the

  1099. Savior?

  1100. Could he

  1101. be the one

  1102. that we've

  1103. been pointed

  1104. forward to,

  1105. that we're

  1106. looking for?

  1107. Could this

  1108. be the

  1109. Savior?

  1110. Isaiah

    Isaiah 35:6

  1111. chapter 35

  1112. verse 6

  1113. made clear

  1114. that the

  1115. Messiah would

  1116. open the

  1117. eyes of the

  1118. blind,

  1119. that he

  1120. would open

  1121. the ears of

  1122. the deaf,

  1123. that he

  1124. would loosen

  1125. the tongue

  1126. of the

  1127. mute,

  1128. that he

  1129. would heal

  1130. those who

  1131. were crippled.

  1132. And this

  1133. is exactly

  1134. what Jesus

  1135. had been

  1136. doing.

  1137. So they

  1138. joined the

  1139. dots.

  1140. In their

  1141. minds,

  1142. they say,

  1143. this must

  1144. be the

  1145. Messiah.

  1146. There's

  1147. that tangible

  1148. excitement that

  1149. is moving

  1150. through these

  1151. crowds.

  1152. But then

  1153. the so-called

  1154. seeing men,

  1155. then the

  1156. theological

  1157. heavyweights

  1158. come in,

  1159. the Pharisees,

  1160. and they

  1161. step in.

  1162. Verse 24.

  1163. But when

  1164. the Pharisees

  1165. heard it,

  1166. they said,

  1167. it is only

  1168. by Beelzebul,

  1169. the prince of

  1170. demons,

  1171. that this

  1172. man casts

  1173. out demons.

  1174. Now,

  1175. stop for a

  1176. moment and

  1177. think about

  1178. this.

  1179. These men

  1180. who say

  1181. that,

  1182. they are the

  1183. most qualified

  1184. people to be

  1185. able to see

  1186. the Messiah.

  1187. These are

  1188. the theology

  1189. professors.

  1190. These are the

  1191. Old Testament

  1192. experts.

  1193. And yet,

  1194. here is the

  1195. son of

  1196. David.

  1197. Here is the

  1198. Messiah.

  1199. Here is the

  1200. son of God.

  1201. And he's

  1202. looking them

  1203. in the eye.

  1204. And they

  1205. can't see him.

  1206. Or they

  1207. won't see him.

  1208. They're

  1209. willfully

  1210. blind.

  1211. They don't

  1212. want to see

  1213. Jesus.

  1214. And there's

  1215. a warning

  1216. here that we

  1217. must take

  1218. note of.

  1219. And the

  1220. application is

  1221. straightforward.

  1222. You know,

  1223. it is possible

  1224. for us

  1225. to know

  1226. the Bible

  1227. and to

  1228. attend church

  1229. week by

  1230. week.

  1231. and to

  1232. be members

  1233. of the

  1234. Sunday

  1235. school and

  1236. the YF.

  1237. It's

  1238. possible for

  1239. us to be

  1240. active in

  1241. the life of

  1242. the church.

  1243. It's

  1244. possible to

  1245. be a

  1246. minister or

  1247. a bishop or

  1248. an archbishop

  1249. and be

  1250. lost.

  1251. Actually be

  1252. an enemy

  1253. of Christ.

  1254. Like the

  1255. Pharisees

  1256. were.

  1257. your salvation

  1258. and mine

  1259. is not

  1260. dependent

  1261. upon how

  1262. much we

  1263. know about

  1264. Jesus.

  1265. Our

  1266. salvation

  1267. is dependent

  1268. on knowing

  1269. Jesus

  1270. personally.

  1271. Trusting

  1272. him

  1273. as our

  1274. saviour.

  1275. following

  1276. him as

  1277. our

  1278. lord and

  1279. king.

  1280. Having a

  1281. relationship,

  1282. a living

  1283. relationship

  1284. with him

  1285. where we

  1286. walk with

  1287. him and

  1288. we talk

  1289. with him.

  1290. We spend

  1291. time day

  1292. by day

  1293. in his

  1294. presence.

  1295. The

  1296. Pharisees,

  1297. as we see

  1298. them here,

  1299. they were

  1300. resisting

  1301. Jesus.

  1302. They were

  1303. rebels

  1304. against

  1305. Jesus.

  1306. They had

  1307. no

  1308. relationship

  1309. with

  1310. Jesus.

  1311. So what

  1312. about you

  1313. and what

  1314. about me?

  1315. Do we

  1316. know

  1317. Jesus?

  1318. Are we

  1319. in relationship

  1320. with him?

  1321. have we

  1322. come to

  1323. him?

  1324. We've

  1325. heard the

  1326. call

  1327. repeatedly

  1328. even over

  1329. these days.

  1330. Come to

  1331. me,

  1332. those who

  1333. are weary,

  1334. those who

  1335. are burdened,

  1336. those who

  1337. are sinners.

  1338. Ask

  1339. for

  1340. forgiveness.

  1341. Ask

  1342. for

  1343. cleansing.

  1344. Receive

  1345. rest.

  1346. Call

  1347. upon

  1348. my

  1349. name.

  1350. have we

  1351. done it?

  1352. Have we

  1353. come to

  1354. him?

  1355. The

  1356. seeing men

  1357. are blind

  1358. to Jesus.

  1359. The

  1360. blind man

  1361. sees

  1362. Jesus.

  1363. And the

  1364. final thing

  1365. this evening

  1366. is the

  1367. whole

  1368. teaching

  1369. that

  1370. Jesus

  1371. presses

  1372. home

  1373. at this

  1374. point

  1375. that

  1376. blasphemy

  1377. against

  1378. the

  1379. Holy

  1380. Spirit.

  1381. This

  1382. term,

  1383. this

  1384. teaching,

  1385. this

  1386. sin

  1387. that

  1388. so

  1389. troubles

  1390. us.

  1391. Blasphemy

  1392. against

  1393. the

  1394. Holy

  1395. Spirit.

  1396. What is

  1397. it?

  1398. It's

  1399. refusing

  1400. to

  1401. believe

  1402. in

  1403. Jesus.

  1404. There

  1405. are

  1406. some

  1407. places

  1408. that

  1409. we

  1410. would

  1411. just

  1412. rather

  1413. not

  1414. go

  1415. because

  1416. they

  1417. unsettle

  1418. us.

  1419. I

  1420. lived

  1421. for a

  1422. few

  1423. years

  1424. over

  1425. in

  1426. Skye

  1427. when

  1428. my

  1429. dad

  1430. was

  1431. a

  1432. minister

  1433. and

  1434. we

  1435. lived

  1436. in

  1437. a

  1438. place

  1439. called

  1440. Kensel

  1441. Eyre.

  1442. There

  1443. was a

  1444. wee

  1445. burn

  1446. in the

  1447. back

  1448. of our

  1449. house

  1450. just

  1451. up

  1452. on

  1453. the

  1454. man's

  1455. croft

  1456. of

  1457. Glebe.

  1458. And

  1459. apparently

  1460. over

  1461. the

  1462. years,

  1463. over

  1464. the

  1465. decades,

  1466. even

  1467. over

  1468. centuries,

  1469. there

  1470. was

  1471. books

  1472. written

  1473. and

  1474. stories

  1475. told

  1476. that

  1477. people

  1478. saw

  1479. ghostly

  1480. things.

  1481. They

  1482. saw

  1483. disturbing

  1484. things

  1485. around

  1486. this

  1487. burn.

  1488. And I

  1489. used to

  1490. walk the

  1491. dog

  1492. out the

  1493. back

  1494. of this

  1495. croft.

  1496. And I

  1497. have to

  1498. say,

  1499. I never

  1500. saw any

  1501. ghostly

  1502. things.

  1503. but

  1504. when I

  1505. was

  1506. walking

  1507. the

  1508. dog

  1509. after

  1510. dark,

  1511. I

  1512. tended

  1513. to

  1514. avoid

  1515. the

  1516. burn

  1517. because

  1518. it

  1519. just

  1520. unsettled

  1521. me.

  1522. And

  1523. this

  1524. next

  1525. passage,

  1526. the

  1527. verses,

  1528. if you've

  1529. got them

  1530. open

  1531. between

  1532. 25

  1533. and

  1534. 32,

  1535. it's

  1536. an

  1537. area

  1538. that

  1539. many

  1540. people

  1541. tend

  1542. to

  1543. avoid

  1544. because

  1545. it's

  1546. unsettling.

  1547. Jesus

  1548. talks

  1549. in these

  1550. verses

  1551. about

  1552. an

  1553. unforgivable

  1554. sin.

  1555. And

  1556. he calls

  1557. that

  1558. blasphemy

  1559. against

  1560. the

  1561. Holy

  1562. Spirit.

  1563. Don't

  1564. want to

  1565. think about

  1566. this for

  1567. just a

  1568. few

  1569. moments,

  1570. but

  1571. just

  1572. before we

  1573. consider

  1574. what

  1575. Jesus

  1576. says

  1577. specifically

  1578. about

  1579. this

  1580. sin,

  1581. let's

  1582. just

  1583. recap

  1584. and

  1585. remind

  1586. ourselves

  1587. of

  1588. what

  1589. has

  1590. just

  1591. happened

  1592. because

  1593. the

  1594. context

  1595. is always

  1596. important

  1597. for us

  1598. to

  1599. understand

  1600. the

  1601. teaching.

  1602. So

  1603. what

  1604. has

  1605. just

  1606. happened?

  1607. Jesus

  1608. goes on,

  1609. he teaches

  1610. this about

  1611. the

  1612. unforgivable

  1613. sin,

  1614. but what

  1615. has he

  1616. just

  1617. encountered?

  1618. What has

  1619. he just

  1620. faced?

  1621. What has

  1622. just

  1623. happened

  1624. here?

  1625. Well,

  1626. he's

  1627. just

  1628. clashed

  1629. with

  1630. the

  1631. Pharisees.

  1632. The

  1633. Pharisees

  1634. just

  1635. watch

  1636. Jesus

  1637. heal

  1638. this

  1639. blind

  1640. and

  1641. mute

  1642. man.

  1643. They

  1644. had

  1645. seen

  1646. the

  1647. supernatural

  1648. power

  1649. of God

  1650. the

  1651. Holy

  1652. Spirit

  1653. working

  1654. with

  1655. and

  1656. working

  1657. through

  1658. God

  1659. the

  1660. Son.

  1661. They'd

  1662. witnessed

  1663. a miracle.

  1664. They'd

  1665. seen

  1666. God

  1667. at

  1668. action.

  1669. And

  1670. how

  1671. do they

  1672. respond?

  1673. Well,

  1674. they respond

  1675. in verse

  1676. 24

  1677. by calling

  1678. the Holy

  1679. Spirit

  1680. and

  1681. the

  1682. work

  1683. of

  1684. the

  1685. Holy

  1686. Spirit

  1687. they

  1688. call

  1689. they

  1690. attribute

  1691. that

  1692. work

  1693. to

  1694. Beelzebul

  1695. the

  1696. devil.

  1697. So we

  1698. have here

  1699. the most

  1700. crass

  1701. sinful

  1702. case

  1703. of

  1704. mistaken

  1705. identity.

  1706. They point

  1707. the finger

  1708. at Jesus

  1709. and talk

  1710. about

  1711. the devil.

  1712. And so

  1713. Jesus

  1714. just

  1715. using

  1716. very

  1717. basic

  1718. reason

  1719. he

  1720. shows

  1721. how

  1722. flawed

  1723. their

  1724. thinking

  1725. was.

  1726. Verse

  1727. 25

  1728. Knowing

  1729. their

  1730. thoughts

  1731. Jesus

  1732. said to

  1733. them

  1734. every

  1735. kingdom

  1736. divided

  1737. against

  1738. itself

  1739. is

  1740. laid

  1741. waste

  1742. no

  1743. sithier

  1744. house

  1745. divided

  1746. against

  1747. itself

  1748. will

  1749. stand.

  1750. If

  1751. Satan

  1752. casts

  1753. out

  1754. Satan

  1755. he's

  1756. divided

  1757. against

  1758. himself

  1759. how

  1760. then

  1761. will

  1762. his

  1763. kingdom

  1764. stand?

  1765. And if

  1766. I cast

  1767. out

  1768. demons

  1769. by

  1770. Beelzebul

  1771. by

  1772. whom

  1773. do

  1774. your

  1775. sons

  1776. cast

  1777. them

  1778. out?

  1779. Therefore

  1780. they

  1781. will

  1782. be

  1783. your

  1784. judges.

  1785. But

  1786. if

  1787. it's

  1788. by

  1789. the

  1790. spirit

  1791. of

  1792. God

  1793. that

  1794. I

  1795. cast

  1796. out

  1797. demons

  1798. then

  1799. the

  1800. kingdom

  1801. of

  1802. God

  1803. has

  1804. come

  1805. upon

  1806. you.

  1807. How

  1808. can

  1809. someone

  1810. enter

  1811. a

  1812. strong

  1813. man's

  1814. house

  1815. and

  1816. plunder

  1817. his

  1818. goods

  1819. unless

  1820. he

  1821. first

  1822. binds

  1823. !

  1824. So

  1825. Jesus

  1826. he

  1827. just

  1828. shows

  1829. in

  1830. a

  1831. very

  1832. few

  1833. words

  1834. how

  1835. flawed

  1836. and

  1837. irrational

  1838. their

  1839. reasoning

  1840. was.

  1841. J.C.

  1842. Ryle

  1843. says it

  1844. quicker than

  1845. I can

  1846. he says

  1847. this was

  1848. an

  1849. absurd

  1850. charge.

  1851. Our

  1852. Lord

  1853. shows

  1854. that it

  1855. was

  1856. unreasonable

  1857. to suppose

  1858. that the

  1859. devil

  1860. would help

  1861. to pull

  1862. down

  1863. his own

  1864. kingdom

  1865. and

  1866. Satan

  1867. cast

  1868. out

  1869. Satan

  1870. but

  1871. there

  1872. is

  1873. nothing

  1874. says

  1875. Ryle

  1876. too

  1877. absurd

  1878. and

  1879. unreasonable

  1880. for men

  1881. to say

  1882. when they

  1883. are

  1884. thoroughly

  1885. set

  1886. against

  1887. Christ.

  1888. And

  1889. that was

  1890. the position

  1891. that the

  1892. Pharisees

  1893. held.

  1894. They

  1895. were

  1896. thoroughly

  1897. set

  1898. against

  1899. Christ

  1900. and

  1901. even

  1902. though

  1903. their

  1904. reasoning

  1905. as they

  1906. attacked

  1907. Jesus

  1908. even

  1909. though

  1910. it

  1911. was

  1912. illogical

  1913. and

  1914. unreasonable

  1915. they

  1916. held

  1917. it

  1918. because

  1919. they

  1920. were

  1921. against

  1922. Christ.

  1923. And

  1924. Jesus

  1925. underlines

  1926. that and

  1927. he shows

  1928. them that

  1929. they were

  1930. against

  1931. him.

  1932. In

  1933. verse

  1934. 13

  1935. Jesus

  1936. says

  1937. to

  1938. them

  1939. and

  1940. he's

  1941. saying

  1942. to

  1943. us

  1944. because

  1945. this is

  1946. a word

  1947. for us

  1948. tonight

  1949. Jesus

  1950. says

  1951. whoever

  1952. is not

  1953. with

  1954. me

  1955. is

  1956. against

  1957. me

  1958. and

  1959. whoever

  1960. does

  1961. not

  1962. gather

  1963. with

  1964. me

  1965. scatters.

  1966. It's

  1967. very black

  1968. and white

  1969. isn't

  1970. it?

  1971. Jesus

  1972. says

  1973. clearly

  1974. that there

  1975. is no

  1976. middle

  1977. ground

  1978. when

  1979. it

  1980. comes

  1981. to

  1982. him.

  1983. We

  1984. had

  1985. an

  1986. illustration

  1987. of

  1988. that

  1989. even

  1990. this

  1991. morning.

  1992. There

  1993. are

  1994. those

  1995. at

  1996. the

  1997. table

  1998. there

  1999. are

  2000. those

  2001. who

  2002. are

  2003. not

  2004. at

  2005. the

  2006. table.

  2007. There's

  2008. no

  2009. in

  2010. between

  2011. state.

  2012. There's

  2013. those

  2014. who

  2015. are

  2016. at

  2017. the

  2018. table

  2019. with

  2020. the

  2021. Lord

  2022. and

  2023. there

  2024. are

  2025. those

  2026. who

  2027. are

  2028. saying

  2029. I'm

  2030. not

  2031. sitting there.

  2032. That's not for me.

  2033. No neutral,

  2034. no neutral place,

2035. no area that we can go

  2036. in the church

  2037. where there's,

  2038. there's no,

  2039. there's neutrality.

  2040. With him,

  2041. without him,

  2042. for him,

  2043. against him.

2044. That's what Jesus is saying.

  2045. Eric Alexander,

  2046. the Reverend Eric Alexander,

  2047. said,

  2048. imagine Jesus coming

2049. to each of us personally,

  2050. moving through the church,

  2051. saying,

  2052. for me,

  2053. or against me.

2054. Can we visualize that even now?

  2055. Jesus taking time

  2056. to move amongst us,

2057. going from pew to pew,

  2058. person to person,

  2059. saying,

  2060. for me,

  2061. or against me.

  2062. Give me an answer.

  2063. How would you answer?

2064. And this is a question

  2065. that's an answer

  2066. that will have

  2067. eternal significance.

2068. We will all answer it.

2069. And then Jesus goes on

  2070. to say,

  2071. therefore I tell you,

  2072. every sin and blasphemy

  2073. will be forgiven people.

  2074. But the blasphemy

  2075. against the Spirit

  2076. will not be forgiven.

  2077. And whoever speaks

  2078. a word against

  2079. the Son of Man

  2080. will be forgiven.

  2081. But whoever speaks

  2082. against the Holy Spirit

  2083. will not be forgiven.

  2084. Either in this age

2085. or in the age to come.

  2086. So as we conclude,

  2087. what does this mean?

  2088. What is

  2089. the unforgivable sin?

  2090. Well, it's to do

  2091. what the Pharisees

  2092. were doing.

  2093. It's to decide

  2094. in our wills

  2095. not to believe

  2096. in Jesus.

  2097. even when

  2098. the Spirit of God

  2099. is striving with us

  2100. and giving us

  2101. every reason

  2102. to believe.

  2103. I mean,

  2104. think back

  2105. into Matthew's

  2106. Gospel record

  2107. as we see

  2108. what was going on

  2109. in the context

  2110. that Jesus

  2111. was speaking into.

  2112. Matthew tells us

  2113. in these chapters

  2114. that Jesus,

  2115. when he preached,

  2116. he preached

  2117. with otherworldly

  2118. authority.

  2119. And these men,

  2120. they heard it.

  2121. And Jesus healed

  2122. supernaturally.

  2123. There was no

  2124. natural explanation

  2125. for the healings

  2126. that he performed.

  2127. He performed

  2128. miracle after miracle

  2129. as he went

  2130. from place to place.

  2131. He reached out

  2132. to these Pharisees

  2133. day after day.

  2134. But they refused

  2135. to believe

  2136. in him.

  2137. They resist him.

  2138. They speak

  2139. against him.

  2140. And they speak

  2141. against the Holy

  2142. Spirit who was

  2143. resting upon him.

  2144. Think back

  2145. to Matthew 3

  2146. at the beginning

  2147. of Jesus'

  2148. ministry.

  2149. We see the Holy

  2150. Spirit coming

  2151. to rest

  2152. upon Jesus.

  2153. And so as

  2154. Jesus preaches,

  2155. as Jesus reaches

  2156. out,

  2157. as Jesus heals,

  2158. the Spirit

  2159. strives

  2160. with these

  2161. people.

  2162. He is

  2163. with Jesus.

  2164. And yet,

  2165. no matter

  2166. what Jesus

  2167. says,

  2168. or what Jesus

  2169. does,

  2170. these Pharisees

  2171. in particular,

  2172. they will not

  2173. repent

  2174. of their sin.

  2175. and that's

  2176. what it means,

  2177. I believe,

  2178. to blaspheme

  2179. against the

  2180. Holy Spirit.

  2181. And if that's

  2182. how we live

  2183. in this age,

  2184. Jesus

  2185. says

  2186. that in the

  2187. age to come,

  2188. there will be

  2189. no forgiveness.

  2190. There will be

  2191. no healing

  2192. of our souls,

  2193. there will be

  2194. no heaven.

  2195. There will be

  2196. only hell.

  2197. The commentator

  2198. Warren Weerspey

  2199. says,

  2200. is there

  2201. an unpardonable

  2202. sin today?

  2203. Then he answers,

  2204. yes.

  2205. The final

  2206. rejection

  2207. of Jesus

  2208. Christ.

  2209. Jesus made it

  2210. clear,

  2211. says Weerspey,

  2212. that all sins

  2213. can be forgiven.

  2214. Adultery,

  2215. murder,

  2216. blasphemy,

  2217. and other sins

  2218. can all be

  2219. forgiven.

  2220. They are not

  2221. unpardonable.

  2222. But God

  2223. cannot forgive

  2224. the rejection

  2225. of his son.

  2226. It is the

  2227. spirit

  2228. who bears

  2229. witness to

  2230. Christ

  2231. and who

  2232. convicts

  2233. the lost

  2234. sinner.

  2235. sin.

  2236. So as we

  2237. finish,

  2238. we can think

  2239. back,

  2240. each one of us,

  2241. into our

  2242. lives

  2243. and we can

  2244. perhaps,

  2245. you know,

  2246. have sins

  2247. that are brought

  2248. back to our

  2249. memories

  2250. that haunt us,

  2251. that are so

  2252. vast

  2253. and so

  2254. dark

  2255. in our

  2256. memories

  2257. and

  2258. our minds

  2259. that we

  2260. wonder,

  2261. can they be

  2262. forgiven?

  2263. And the

  2264. truth is,

  2265. every one

  2266. of them

  2267. can be

  2268. forgiven.

  2269. We often

  2270. sing the

  2271. lines from

  2272. the hymn,

  2273. the vilest

  2274. offender

  2275. who truly

  2276. believes,

  2277. that

  2278. moment

  2279. from

  2280. Jesus

  2281. a

  2282. pardon

  2283. receives.

  2284. The

  2285. unpardonable

  2286. sin,

  2287. the

  2288. unpardonable

  2289. sin

  2290. is to

  2291. resist the

  2292. Holy Spirit

  2293. as he

  2294. strives

  2295. with us.

  2296. And it's

  2297. to sit

  2298. in these

  2299. chairs

  2300. and to

  2301. go week

  2302. after week

  2303. and month

  2304. after month

  2305. and

  2306. communion

  2307. season

  2308. after

  2309. communion

  2310. season

  2311. refusing

  2312. to

  2313. believe

  2314. and

  2315. refusing

  2316. to

  2317. profess

  2318. faith

  2319. in

  2320. Christ.

  2321. !

  2322. So how

  2323. can we

  2324. avoid

  2325. committing

  2326. the

  2327. unforgivable

  2328. sin?

  2329. Because I'm

  2330. quite sure

  2331. it's a

  2332. danger for

  2333. some,

  2334. even in

  2335. the room

  2336. here this

  2337. evening.

  2338. How can

  2339. we go

  2340. out from

  2341. this place

  2342. tonight

  2343. knowing that

  2344. we are

  2345. avoiding

  2346. committing

  2347. the

  2348. unforgivable

  2349. sin?

  2350. There's

  2351. only one

  2352. way

  2353. and it's

  2354. by coming

  2355. to Jesus

  2356. today.

  2357. It's

  2358. by believing

  2359. in Jesus

  2360. today.

  2361. Psalm 95

  2362. today,

  2363. if you

  2364. hear his

  2365. voice,

  2366. do not

  2367. harden your

  2368. heart.

  2369. 2

  2370. Corinthians

  2371. 6,

  2372. behold

  2373. now

  2374. is the

  2375. day of

  2376. salvation.

  2377. Let's

  2378. pray.

  2379. our

  2380. heavenly

  2381. father,

  2382. we pray

  2383. that

  2384. today,

  2385. that now,

  2386. would be

  2387. the day

  2388. of salvation

  2389. for

  2390. someone,

  2391. perhaps

  2392. many here

  2393. this

  2394. evening.

  2395. We thank

  2396. you,

  2397. father,

  2398. for sending

  2399. your son

  2400. into this

  2401. world.

  2402. We thank

  2403. you for

  2404. the gospel

  2405. accounts that

  2406. we have

  2407. that record

  2408. for us

  2409. the words

  2410. and the

  2411. works of

  2412. Jesus.

  2413. We thank

  2414. you that in

  2415. some ways

  2416. we are

  2417. more

  2418. privileged

  2419. than the

  2420. Pharisees

  2421. ever were

  2422. as we

  2423. have the

  2424. word of

  2425. God

  2426. open before

  2427. us,

  2428. as we

  2429. hear the

  2430. voice of

  2431. Jesus

  2432. calling out

  2433. to us

  2434. week by

  2435. week in

  2436. the gospel.

  2437. We ask

  2438. that none

  2439. of us

  2440. here

  2441. tonight

  2442. would find

  2443. that we

  2444. cross over

  2445. into the

  2446. territory

  2447. of the

  2448. unforgivable

  2449. sin.

  2450. we pray

  2451. that none

  2452. of us

  2453. would

  2454. resist

  2455. and resist

  2456. and resist

  2457. and resist

  2458. until we

  2459. can no

  2460. longer see

  2461. or hear

  2462. anything of

  2463. the gospel.

  2464. Holy Spirit,

  2465. we pray that

  2466. you would

  2467. continue to

  2468. strive

  2469. with each

  2470. one of

  2471. us.

  2472. and we

  2473. pray that

  2474. none of

  2475. us

  2476. tonight

  2477. would walk

  2478. out the

  2479. door

  2480. still

  2481. resisting

  2482. and turning

  2483. away

  2484. from Jesus.

  2485. us.

  2486. But as

  2487. we hear

  2488. his voice,

  2489. we pray

  2490. that we

  2491. would come

  2492. and that

  2493. we would

  2494. find rest

  2495. for our

  2496. souls.

  2497. Life

  2498. that is

  2499. eternal,

  2500. that is

  2501. salvation.

  2502. And we

  2503. pray this

  2504. in Jesus'

  2505. name.

  2506. Amen.

  2507. We'll sing

  2508. to conclude

  2509. from Psalm

  2510. 67.

  2511. The

  2512. Scottish

  2513. shelter,

  2514. I think,

  2515. is where

  2516. we are

  2517. singing from

  2518. the

  2519. traditional

  2520. version

  2521. on page

  2522. 300.

  2523. Lord,

  2524. bless and

  2525. pity us,

  2526. shine on us

  2527. with thy

  2528. face,

  2529. that the

  2530. earth thy

  2531. way and

  2532. nations all

  2533. may know

  2534. thy saving

  2535. grace.

  2536. We'll sing

  2537. the whole

  2538. of this

  2539. psalm to

  2540. God's

  2541. praise.

  2542. thy

2543. Let people praise thee, Lord.

2544. Let people all thee praise.

2545. Oh, let the nations be glad

2546. in songs their voices raise.

  2547. Thou justly people shall

  2548. honor relations all.

2549. Let people praise thee, Lord.

2550. Praise thee, both great and small.

2551. The earth, our God shall bless thee, send.

2552. God shall us best, which shall end here,

2553. and to earth at most end.

  2554. Amen.

  2555. Close in prayer.

2556. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your saving grace,

2557. and we pray that each one of us would receive it.

2558. Work in us, we pray, and help us.

2559. And as we go from here now,

2560. we pray that we would part with your blessing.

2561. We pray for the time of fellowship

2562. that we look forward to just now.

2563. We pray for the food and the drink

2564. that has been prepared for us.

2565. And we thank you for it, Lord.

2566. We pray that you would bless it to our bodies

2567. as you bless your word as food for our souls.

2568. And now we pray that the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

2569. the love of God the Father,

2570. and the fellowship of God the Holy Spirit,

2571. would be with us all now and forevermore.

  2572. Amen.

  2573. Amen.
