  1. Thank you, Callum. It's good to be back with you again on the Lord's Day.

  2. We'll begin our time of worship and before we sing, we'll read some words from Isaiah chapter 55.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  3. Isaiah chapter 55. And at the beginning of the chapter, we hear that gospel call.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  4. Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters. And he who has no money, come buy and eat.

  5. Come buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which

  6. is not bread and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me and eat what

  7. is good and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear and come to me. Hear that your soul may live.

  8. Let's worship God and sing to his praise. We sing from Psalm 51, the traditional version of the Psalm,

  9. page 281 in the books. Psalm 51. And we sing from verse 7 through to verse 13.

  10. Do thy with hyssop sprinkle me, I shall be cleansed so. Ye wash thou me, and then I shall be whiter than the snow.

  11. And as we think about that prayer that's answered in Christ, we remember today the cost at which the

  12. cleansing for our souls came. And we rejoice in the salvation that is gifted to us as we come to Jesus.

  13. So, Psalm 51, verses 7 to 13. And we'll stand to sing to God's praise.

    Psalms 51:7–13

  15. Thank you.

  16. Thank you.

  17. Thank you.

  18. Thank you.

  19. Thank you.

  20. Thank you.

  21. Let's unite our hearts in prayer once more. Let's pray.

  22. Let's pray.

  23. presence of God. We thank you for the call that we so often turn to in the psalm that says,

  24. be still and know that I am God and I am with you. So we pray, Lord, that we would know that

  25. sense of your presence with us this morning as we come together in worship, as we gather together

  26. around the Lord's table. We thank you that we do so as sinners who are turning unto thee,

  27. we come as sinners who recognize that we cannot save ourselves, but there is a Savior in Christ.

  28. And Father, we thank you for sending your Son, the Lord Jesus, into this world,

  29. for God so loved the world that he gave his only Son. Lord Jesus, we thank you for coming into this

  30. world to live for us that perfect, sinless life that none of us have or could ever live. We thank you

  31. for the righteousness that is so amazingly seen as we look to Jesus and as we read of Jesus in the

  32. Gospels. And even as we see the character and the wonder of Christ prophesied in the Old Testament,

  33. we see a perfect, sinless, spotless life. We see pure righteousness.

  34. Jesus is the image of the invisible God. And we thank you that our calling is to fix our eyes upon him.

  35. So enable us to do that, we pray, Holy Spirit, we ask that you would help us.

  36. We confess that we are so easily distracted. Our minds are so cluttered with many of the things of

  37. this world. And we pray that you would help us, Holy Spirit, to lift our eyes from ground level to the

  38. hills and to the one who made the hills, the God of heaven and earth. And we pray that this day,

  39. we would be once more amazed by the grace of Jesus, God's riches poured out upon us at Christ's expense.

  40. As we draw near to the cross, once more we ask, Lord, that we would see the wonder of the verse that tells us

  41. that he who knew no sin became sin for us, so that we, through him, may become the righteousness of God.

  42. And what a wondrous thought that is. Give us faith, we pray, that we may grasp it more fully,

  43. that as we confess our sin, that as we confess our sin, it is transferred to Jesus, who made an end on it,

  44. on the cross. And as we believe in him, we become righteous in and through him, the great exchange.

  45. Help us, Lord, to see, to believe, to grasp, and to worship you with great joy,

  46. as we see all that you have done for us in Christ. So help us, Lord, we pray,

  47. as we seek to worship you. We thank you for those who are coming to the table for the first time

  48. this morning. We pray for Delina and the Gaelic, as we pray for Rory John and all who gather there,

  49. that they would know your presence and help, as we pray for that also here.

  50. And we pray also for Martin. And we ask, Lord, that you would bless him. We thank you that,

  51. as a young man, he has professed that his faith is in Jesus. And we ask, Lord, that you would help him,

  52. not only as he sits at the table today, but as he rises from the table, as he goes back to school,

  53. as he's amongst his friends. We ask that he and each one of us who profess Christ would be salt

  54. and light, wherever you put us. So hear our prayers. Guide us and lead us in worship. Take away

  55. our sin, we pray. We have confessed it in the psalm, as we have taken upon our lips that psalm of

  56. repentance. And as again, Lord, we confess our sin in the quietness of our own hearts. We pray that you

  57. would cleanse us in the blood of Christ, that you would give us the assurance of the pardon that is

  58. ours in Jesus. And that you would give us the joy of knowing peace with God and the promise of

  59. resurrection life. Even as we rise from the table, we do so remembering that we do this only until Jesus

  60. comes. And this day, and every Lord's day we are given, we are reminded of the fact that our Savior

  61. lives and one day will return. And we pray that we would be found ready. Hear our prayers go before

  62. us, we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  63. It's good to see and hear one or two boys and girls here. I'm scanning the church to see where I can see

  64. them, but I think you've all been elevated to the upper levels. The chances of you speaking to me

  65. from over there are quite slim. Unless Ali Moli's son's here, and he'll certainly speak to me from

  66. whatever angle he might be. So I thought I would just show you something today. And boys and girls,

  67. you might need your binoculars. But can you tell me, what's this? It's on my hand. I take it off.

  68. What's that? Can you see it? Anyone brave enough to shout out?

  69. He must not be in the service, is he? It's a ring, for those of you who can't see. And it's a ring

  70. that is on a, I've only got one piece of jewelry in my whole body. It's the only piece of jewelry I've

  71. ever worn in my life. And it's a ring, and I wear it on this finger. And when I'm wearing a ring on this

  72. finger, like everyone else who wears a ring on this finger, it tells you something. What does it tell

  73. you? Well, it tells you that I'm married. So back in Harris, my wife, Mary, is over there. And I've

  74. got three girls, Anna and Grace and Lois. But this ring is something that, it tells you that I'm married.

  75. Now, boys and girls, if I take this ring off my finger, and I put it now in my pocket, does

  76. that mean that I'm not married anymore? Well, no. I'm still married. It's not the ring that

  77. makes me married. It's just a sign. It's a sign that tells other people that I'm married,

  78. and it's a sign, you could say, that helps me to remember. If I would never dare forget.

  79. But it helps me to remember on Valentine's Day that I'm married, and I better go out and

  80. buy a card and chocolates or whatever. So the ring is not the thing that makes me married.

  81. It's a sign, and it's a reminder of the fact that I'm married. And boys and girls, the thing

  82. that you see today that's different from most Sundays is that there is a table down at the

  83. front here. And on the table, there's bread and there's wine. And the bread reminds us of

  84. the body of Jesus. He gave himself for us. And the wine reminds us of the blood of Jesus.

  85. It takes us to the cross, where we remember that Jesus, he bled and he died to take our sin away.

  86. And when we eat the bread, and when we drink the wine, we're saying that we're Christians.

  87. See, everybody who takes the bread and takes the wine today, they are saying as they take it,

  88. I'm a Christian.

  89. Now, is it the eating of the bread and the drinking of the wine that makes them Christians? No, it's not.

  90. These things are just signs. And they point us to Jesus. And when we come and we sit at the table,

  91. as this is called, and we take the bread and we take the wine, we're saying, Lord Jesus, I trust in you.

  92. We're saying that to Jesus. But we're saying to the people around who are watching,

  93. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm trusting Jesus. I'm a sinner who is trusting Jesus as my Savior.

  94. One last thing before you go away to Sunday school. What do you think Mary would say if I went home

  95. or if I moved to a new place on the mainland? And I said, I'll tell you what, Mary, I do love you,

  96. but I'm going to take the wedding ring off. And I think from now on, we should keep our marriage a secret.

  97. Even though I love you, I tell you what, I don't want anybody to know about you.

  98. And I don't want anyone to know that we love each other and that we're married. Will that be okay?

  99. What do you think she would say? I think she would say a whole lot.

  100. I don't think she would be very pleased if I was going to say, I'm not brave enough.

  101. I'm a bit ashamed to say that I'm married to you. That's not okay.

  102. If we love each other, we wear the ring.

  103. And we tell people that we're married.

  104. And if we are trusting Jesus,

  105. if we love Jesus,

  106. if he's taken our sin away,

  107. if we are his people,

  108. it's not okay to not come to the table.

  109. We must hear what Jesus says.

  110. And he says, do this

  111. to remember me.

  112. Do this.

  113. Take the bread, take the wine,

  114. sit at the table

  115. to tell people that you love me

  116. and that you're trusting me.

  117. And so that's what we do

  118. as we come to the table today.

  119. So let's pray again just for a moment.

  120. Lord Jesus, we thank you that you love us.

  121. We thank you that we can trust you.

  122. We thank you that you went to the cross

  123. to take our sin away.

  124. And that the bread reminds us of your body

  125. that you gave for us.

  126. And the wine reminds us of the blood

  127. that was shed to take away our sin.

  128. We ask, Lord, that every one of us

  129. would be trusting you.

  130. That our sins would be washed away.

  131. And we pray that if there's anybody here

  132. who is trusting you,

  133. but isn't yet telling anybody

  134. that they're trusting you,

  135. we pray that even today

  136. that would change

  137. and that they would want to come

  138. and tell people

  139. that they are Christians.

  140. Be with the boys and girls.

  141. Help them as they go to Sunday school.

  142. Open their minds and their hearts

  143. that they would remember their creator

  144. and that they would trust Jesus

  145. as their saviour

  146. in the days of their youth.

  147. Bless them, we pray.

  148. And we ask all this in Jesus' name.

  149. Amen.

  150. We're going to sing again

  151. to God's praise.

  152. And we'll sing this time

  153. from the Sing Psalms version

  154. of Psalm 23.

  155. Psalm 23.

  156. And that is on page 28

  157. of the book.

  158. And notice what we're saying

  159. in that psalm.

  160. We're saying,

  161. we're saying the Lord

  162. is my shepherd.

  163. Not just that he's the shepherd,

  164. but we're saying the Lord

  165. is my shepherd.

  166. And so we'll sing

  167. this psalm.

  168. Psalm 23,

  169. the whole psalm

  170. to God's praise.

  171. Amen.

  172. Amen.

  173. Amen.

  174. Amen.

  175. έ έ έ

  176. By wandering steps he brings back to his way,

  177. in straight paths of righteousness making me stay,

  178. unless he has done his great name to display.

  179. Though I walk with death's honey where darkness is near,

  180. because you are with me no evil I fear,

  181. your wrath and your suffering be comfort and cheer.

  182. And the sight of my enemies at table you spread,

  183. the oil of rejoicing you pour on my head,

  184. my cup overflows and ungracious regret.

  185. O jury, your covenant, mercy and grace,

  186. will follow me closely in all of my ways.

  187. I will dwell in the house of the Lord all my days.

  188. If you could turn with me now please to Matthew chapter 11,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  189. page 984 on the Bible here.

  190. Matthew chapter 11 and just a short reading,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  191. as we had last night also from verse 25 to the end of the chapter.

  192. At that time Jesus declared,

  193. I thank you Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

  194. that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding

  195. and revealed them to little children.

  196. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

  197. All things have been handed over to me by my Father,

  198. and no one knows the Son except the Father,

  199. and no one knows the Father except the Son,

  200. and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

  201. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,

  202. and I will give you rest.

  203. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

  204. for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

  205. and you will find rest for your souls.

  206. For my yoke is easy,

  207. and my burden is light.

  208. Amen.

  209. May God bless that reading of his word to us.

  210. We'll sing again now to God's praise from Psalm 62.

  211. Sing Psalm 62, page number 80 in the book.

  212. We sing from verse 5 to verse 12 of the psalm.

  213. Find rest, my soul, in God alone.

  214. In him my hope is ever sure.

  215. My safety fortress, sheltering rock.

  216. In him alone I am secure.

  217. Down to the end of the psalm.

  218. Psalm 62, verses 5 to 12.

    Psalms 62:5–12

  219. To God's praise.

  220. Amen.

  221. Amen.

  222. Amen.

  223. Amen.

  224. Amen.

  225. Amen.

  226. Amen.

  227. If you could turn back please to the passage that we read in Matthew 11.

  228. Amen.

  229. Amen.

  230. Amen.

  231. Our Heavenly Father we thank you that we find rest in God alone.

  232. We thank you that our hope is in Christ.

  233. Amen.

  234. And so we ask Lord that as we come back to the word as we hear again this invitation, this call that comes from Jesus to come to him.

  235. We ask Lord that we would find rest, that we would know the sure and certain hope that comes from being found in him.

  236. Amen.

  237. So help us Lord we pray as we meditate upon your word and what we pray for ourselves here.

  238. We pray for Rory John as he leads in the Gaelic.

  239. We pray for the children again as they go to their Sunday school class.

  240. We pray for many denominations around us in this town who gather around your word as we do at this time.

  241. And we ask Lord that whatever Christ crucified is preached that you would be working, that Jesus would be lifted up and that many would be drawn to him.

  242. So help us we pray in Jesus name.

  243. Amen.

  245. and vibrations in our phone that's calling us to respond to all manner of things that come across our way.

  246. There are many calls that we receive from many different places and people.

  247. But what I'd like to do this morning in the time that we have is return to the verses that we have been in over the course of the weekend

  248. and the verses that we looked at yesterday evening.

  249. And in these verses, we hear the call of God upon us, the words of Jesus, the words of God the Son.

  250. And he says,

  251. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

  252. And I really want to just limit our thoughts this morning to verse 28.

  253. And think about this call, this verse, under four headings.

  254. We hear, first of all, in this verse, a universal call or an inclusive call.

  255. An all-inclusive call, you could say.

  256. That's the first thing that we'll think about.

  257. The second point that's connected to the first point is that this is a call.

  258. It's a call to, it's a call for sinners to respond.

  259. It's a universal, inclusive call, point one.

  260. It's a call for sinners.

  261. And these two points fit together because we're all sinners.

  262. So it's for all of us.

  263. The third point is it's a call to come to Christ.

  264. We're given clear direction on who we are to come to, how we are to respond.

  265. We come directly to Christ.

  266. And the final thing that we see in this verse is that it's a call to rest.

  267. It's a call to receive rest.

  268. So four very simple points that speak to us about the wonder of the gospel message,

  269. which is deep enough for every theological professor that ever lived to delve down into

  270. and never get to the bottom of.

  271. And yet it's simple enough for the youngest amongst us here to be able to take hold of

  272. and respond to.

  273. It's a call for the very young as it is a call for those who are up in years and who may be

  274. mature in the faith.

  275. So first point in the message this morning is this is a universal call or it's an inclusive

  276. call.

  277. Sometimes people criticize Christianity for being exclusive.

  278. There's nothing exclusive about the call that we have heard.

  279. This is a universal.

  280. It's a wide.

  281. It's an all inclusive call.

  282. This is a call for everyone.

  283. Everyone who has been given ears to hear is being called through this verse.

  284. Jesus says, come to me all who are weary, who labor and are heavy laden.

  285. Not just the respectable.

  286. Not just the clean living.

  287. Not just those who can trace a family heritage of church connections.

  288. This is a call for all.

  289. Sometimes we get offers through the post or on an email and it's something that grabs us.

  290. You know, maybe we see an offer for a free holiday or 20% off new trainers or whatever it is that

  291. interests you, that grabs you.

  292. It catches your eye and you think, I need that.

  293. I want that.

  294. And so we start to respond to this call that's come into our inbox.

  295. But we get five minutes into the application process and we realize, actually, it's not for us.

  296. The 20% off the new trainers is only for students.

  297. Or the free holiday is only for the over 70s or the over 60s or whatever.

  298. There's exclusions.

  299. There's qualifications.

  300. And as we scrutinize the text, we see that we don't qualify for this holiday or this offer.

  301. But when we read these verses, we see that there's no such exclusions.

  302. There's no deceptive small print that's hidden away in the back of this chapter.

  303. This is a universal call.

  304. It's an inclusive call.

  305. James Montgomery Boyce, the commentator, says,

  306. Jesus' words are for people of all ages.

  307. I see people of all ages here.

  308. All nationalities.

  309. And I expect there's people from many different places here.

  310. All temperaments.

  311. I don't know you well, but I expect there's different tempers in the room.

  312. And Jesus calls them.

  313. He calls us, says boys, exactly as they are.

  314. And the call is a call to come.

  315. As the hymn writer wrote in that old hymn,

  316. Just as I am without one plea,

  317. But that thy blood was shed for me,

  318. And that thou bidst me come to thee,

  319. O Lamb of God.

  320. I come.

  321. That's the call.

  322. It's a call to all.

  323. It's a call to come and to become as we are.

  324. And Jesus only knows exactly how we are and who we are.

  325. We can put on a face and we can deceive others about who we are.

  326. We can sometimes project an image that's better than we actually are.

  327. We usually try and work that way, don't we?

  328. We put on our best face.

  329. So it's at home that see exactly who we are.

  330. And yet Jesus sees more clearly exactly who we are

  331. Because he scans our thoughts.

  332. He knows our hearts.

  333. And yet, even though he knows us intimately,

  334. Even though he has known us since the womb,

  335. Even though he knows all our days,

  336. Past, present, and into the future,

  337. But we can't see.

  338. And yet still he calls us.

  339. Exactly as we are today.

  340. He calls us to come.

  341. It's a universal call.

  342. It's for everybody.

  343. It's an inclusive, wide call.

  344. Think about the verse that we so often quote from John 16.

  345. For God so loved the world.

  346. Not one little region.

  347. It's a big, wide word.

  348. The world.

  349. For God so loved the world

  350. That he gave us one and only Son

  351. That whoever.

  352. It's wide.

  353. It's universal.

  354. It's inclusive.

  355. That whoever.

  356. Believes in him.

  357. Would not perish.

  358. But have eternal life.

  359. I'm always conscious that when we come to the Lord's house,

  360. And especially around the table,

  361. The devil is very active.

  362. There's probably been battles in the house

  363. Before you left this morning.

  364. We are conscious of attacks and battles

  365. When we're coming towards the table.

  366. And the devil will love to

  367. Crash into our minds and say,

  368. What are you doing here today?

  369. What are you doing here today?

  370. Yes, them.

  371. I can see them.

  372. They should have a place.

  373. But what about you?

  374. What are you doing here today?

  375. With all the things you said this week

  376. And the things you didn't say.

  377. And the thoughts that went through your mind.

  378. What are you doing here?

  379. What makes you think that you can become a Christian?

  380. What makes you think that the Lord's table is for you?

  381. Surely you are excluded.

  382. Surely the Lord is not calling you.

  383. That's the assaults that we hear crashing in

  384. As God is working.

  385. The devil is seeking to counter.

  386. And yet through this verse,

  387. There is that loving, reassuring correction from Jesus.

  388. And he's saying all who have ears to hear

  389. Are called to come.

  390. None are excluded.

  391. It's a universal call.

  392. The second point is it's a call for sinners.

  393. Jesus invites all.

  394. In the NIV it says,

  395. All who are weary and burdened

  396. We are called to come.

  397. And it's sin

  398. That causes you and I

  399. To feel weary in our souls

  400. And burdened.

  401. So Jesus is calling sinners.

  402. And we know that because

  403. The language experts tell us

  404. That in the Greek

  405. The words used

  406. Are not speaking about

  407. Physical burdens

  408. And the

  409. Physical weaknesses

  410. And the stresses

  411. Of a difficult life.

  412. That's not the meaning

  413. That's captured in these words.

  414. The words that are used

  415. In this verse

  416. Are words that

  417. Referred chiefly to the burden

  418. We feel

  419. At the sense of our sin.

  420. It's a spiritual burden.

  421. It's a spiritual weight.

  422. The AV and the ESV

  423. Which we've read

  424. Speak of those who labor

  425. And are heavy laden.

  426. Those who are tired

  427. From laboring

  428. In our own good works

  429. Rather than receiving

  430. The grace of Christ.

  431. It's possible

  432. For us to work

  433. Furiously

  434. At religion

  435. And try to do

  436. All these religious things

  437. All these good works

  438. As a means

  439. By which we can try

  440. And persuade God

  441. To accept us.

  442. And if that's the way

  443. We're living

  444. Then we are very quickly

  445. Weary

  446. And burdened.

  447. It's a labor.

  448. To all those who labor

  449. All those who are heavy laden

  450. All those who are weighed down

  451. By the sin

  452. That plagues us

  453. Jesus is speaking to us

  454. And the call

  455. Is a universal

  456. It's an inclusive call

  457. Because sin is universal

  458. Sin is

  459. All inclusive

  460. There's no one in this room

  461. No one in this church

  462. Who isn't a sinner

  463. No matter how young

  464. Or how old

  465. How many times you've sat

  466. In the chairs

  467. How good our lives

  468. May look on the outside

  469. How much of the Bible

  470. We may be able to recite

  471. How high a mark

  472. We got in the catechism exams

  473. All of us are sinners.

  474. I was traveling from Edinburgh

  475. Through to Glasgow

  476. The week before last

  477. As I was coming out

  478. Of a meeting

  479. And I was fighting

  480. Against the clock

  481. Trying to catch a train

  482. And so I went charging

  483. Along through the station

  484. And through the

  485. The platform

  486. The announcement

  487. Was sounding

  488. And I jumped onto

  489. The first carriage

  490. That was on the train

  491. That was taking us

  492. From Edinburgh

  493. Through to Glasgow

  494. I sat down

  495. Relieved to be in my seat

  496. And once I sat down

  497. I thought

  498. This is nice

  499. Because the carriage

  500. Seemed to have a bit more space

  501. Than the ones I was usually in

  502. And the seats

  503. Were a bit more comfortable

  504. And it was just

  505. A nice atmosphere

  506. And I thought

  507. This is much nicer

  508. Than I remembered

  509. And then I

  510. I looked around

  511. And I noticed

  512. I was in first class

  513. And I wanted to stay in there

  514. But I could see the conductor

  515. Just a few carriages along

  516. And I knew

  517. That my ticket said

  518. Not first class

  519. But economy

  520. And that's what was important

  521. It wasn't what I felt

  522. I could have sat there

  523. With my arms folded

  524. Saying I should be in here

  525. But I had no

  526. I had no right to be in there

  527. My ticket said economy

  528. My ticket said

  529. You've got a cheap seat

  530. And so I had to accept that

  531. And move

  532. And as much as

  533. Some may not like

  534. This truth

  535. The Bible says

  536. That you and I

  537. Are sinners

  538. That's what our ticket says

  539. Romans 3.23 says

  540. All have sinned

  541. In verse 10 and 11

  542. Of the same chapter

  543. It says

  544. There's no one righteous

  545. Not even one

  546. And that might sound like

  547. Bad news

  548. And it is bad news

  549. But it's bad news

  550. That drives us

  551. To the good news

  552. And the good news

  553. Is that Jesus came

  554. To seek and save

  555. The lost

  556. He came for sinners

  557. He didn't come for

  558. Those who claim

  559. To be spiritually healthy

  560. He came for those

  561. Who know

  562. That we are

  563. Spiritually sick

  564. He came for those

  565. Who agree

  566. With him

  567. That we are sinners

  568. He came for those

  569. Who know

  570. That we need him

  571. To be our saviour

  572. John Newton

  573. Who wrote the hymn

  574. Amazing Grace

  575. Towards the end

  576. Of his life

  577. He was

  578. Struggling with

  579. His memory

  580. And

  581. He couldn't remember

  582. Very much

  583. He couldn't even remember

  584. And recognise

  585. Those

  586. Who were his closest

  587. Friends

  588. And

  589. The record goes

  590. That one of his

  591. Closest friends

  592. Came to visit him

  593. Towards the end

  594. Of his life

  595. And

  596. John Newton

  597. He didn't recognise him

  598. He couldn't remember him

  599. And his friends said

  600. Well

  601. What do you remember

  602. If you don't remember me

  603. You know

  604. What do you remember

  605. And Newton said

  606. I'm quoting

  607. My memory

  608. Is nearly gone

  609. But I remember

  610. Two things

  611. That I am a great sinner

  612. And that Christ

  613. Is a great saviour

  614. And his mind

  615. May have been failing

  616. But still

  617. He had that vision

  618. And that faith

  619. Of a little child

  620. The faith

  621. That enables

  622. Us to enter

  623. The kingdom of God

  624. By recognising

  625. That the call

  626. Of God

  627. Is for sinners

  628. Like us

  629. Sinners

  630. Who need a saviour

  631. In Christ

  632. And as we take

  633. Our place

  634. At the Lord's table

  635. That is what

  636. We confess

  637. Not that we are

  638. Righteous

  639. None of us

  640. Can swagger in

  641. To a church

  642. With our chests

  643. Puffed out

  644. And take our place

  645. As those who think

  646. That we are good enough

  647. That we are righteous

  648. We come with our heads down

  649. We come in humility

  650. We come with reverence

  651. Recognising

  652. That

  653. We are not worthy

  654. But we are trusting

  655. In Jesus

  656. The only one

  657. Who was

  658. And is

  659. Worthy

  660. This is a table

  661. For sinners

  662. Saved

  663. By grace

  664. It's a

  665. A universal

  666. And inclusive call

  667. It's a call

  668. For sinners

  669. The third point

  670. Is it's a call

  671. To come

  672. To Christ

  673. And just the simplicity

  674. Of this

  675. Is just so

  676. Encouraging

  677. Certainly for a simple

  678. Mind like mine

  679. This is a call

  680. To come

  681. To Christ

  682. Where will we find

  683. Help

  684. Where will we find

  685. Salvation

  686. Where will we find

  687. Grace that

  688. Saves and sustain us

  689. In Christ

  690. No other place

  691. All of us

  692. I expect

  693. Will have been

  694. In the situation

  695. Where we're

  696. Looking for help

  697. We're looking for

  698. Assistance

  699. We're in a state

  700. Of need

  701. And we reach out

  702. To a place

  703. Where we think

  704. We're going to get help

  705. And the help

  706. Doesn't come

  707. So maybe

  708. We're struggling

  709. With our health

  710. And we pick up

  711. The phone

  712. And we make a phone call

  713. And we're looking

  714. For help

  715. And we get

  716. Passed from one

  717. Person to the next

  718. To the next

  719. To the next

  720. And we're no

  721. Farther forward

  722. Fifteen minutes later

  723. Or you phone

  724. With a problem

  725. With your broadband

  726. And you get

  727. You tell your story

  728. To the person

  729. At the end of the phone

  730. And they say

  731. Well hold the line

  732. I'm going to transfer

  733. You to this other

  734. Department

  735. You tell them

  736. Your story

  737. And they say

  738. Actually it's not us

  739. We'll transfer you

  740. To another department

  741. And you get passed

  742. From place to place

  743. To place to place

  744. And you get no help

  745. In this verse

  746. Jesus is calling

  747. Those of us

  748. Who are weary

  749. And burdened

  750. Those who are laboring

  751. And who are heavy laden

  752. And we are being called

  753. To come directly

  754. To Christ

  755. So let me ask

  756. That simple

  757. Direct question

  758. Have you come

  759. To Jesus yet?

  760. I remember

  761. When I was a

  762. Just a young boy

  763. Growing up in

  764. Stornway actually

  765. And when I was

  766. Aged eight

  767. I came under

  768. A real heavy

  769. Conviction of sin

  770. I did something

  771. Maybe I'll talk

  772. About it tonight

  773. If I've got a voice left

  774. I did something

  775. And when I did it

  776. The second I did it

  777. I knew I'd done

  778. The wrong thing

  779. I sinned

  780. And from that point

  781. On

  782. God

  783. Worked in my life

  784. To show me

  785. That I had a sin

  786. Problem

  787. And I knew that

  788. Even at age eight

  789. I knew about sin

  790. I knew about salvation

  791. I knew about heaven

  792. I knew about hell

  793. And I knew at that

  794. Young age

  795. That I

  796. I was lost

  797. And I knew that

  798. If I died that night

  799. I wasn't going to be

  800. With Jesus

  801. And it

  802. Scared me

  803. And this weight

  804. Of sin

  805. Was pressing down

  806. On me

  807. And when I was

  808. Playing football

  809. Or busy with my

  810. Pals

  811. I would kind of

  812. Be distracted

  813. But when I was

  814. On my own again

  815. I just felt that

  816. That conviction of sin

  817. Pressing down

  818. And I knew what to do

  819. About it

  820. I knew that I had

  821. To come to Jesus

  822. I knew I had to

  823. Ask for forgiveness

  824. I knew I had to

  825. Ask him to come

  826. Into my life

  827. But for two years

  828. The two saddest years

  829. Of my life

  830. Aged eight to ten

  831. I didn't come

  832. To him

  833. I was slow

  834. To come to him

  835. And for these

  836. Two years

  837. I was so

  838. Restless

  839. And so sad

  840. In my

  841. Heart

  842. So have you

  843. Whether you're

  844. Aged eight

  845. Or whether you're

  846. Aged eighty

  847. Have you come

  848. To Jesus

  849. That's the calling

  850. See when sin

  851. Presses in on us

  852. If we don't

  853. Come to Jesus

  854. We're going to

  855. Go somewhere else

  856. And we'll never

  857. Get rest

  858. Any other place

  859. Some people

  860. When they

  861. They start to feel

  862. Restless

  863. And when they

  864. Come under

  865. Conviction of sin

  866. They'll take

  867. To drink

  868. Or drugs

  869. Let's try

  870. And forget

  871. This

  872. Let's try

  873. And get a

  874. Buzz that will

  875. Just distract us

  876. From this

  877. And there's all

  878. Manner of ruin

  879. And disruption

  880. When we're

  881. Head in that

  882. Direction

  883. Some people

  884. When they come

  885. Under conviction

  886. When they come

  887. Under conviction

  888. Of sin

  889. And when there's

  890. That restlessness

  891. They bury themselves

  892. In work

  893. Some try hard

  894. To be better

  895. People

  896. Think they can

  897. Fix themselves

  898. But still

  899. The burden

  900. Is there

  901. The weight

  902. Is there

  903. And that

  904. Weariness

  905. That burden

  906. That sense

  907. Of being

  908. Heavy laden

  909. It remains

  910. Pressing down

  911. In on us

  912. Until we

  913. Come to

  914. Christ

  915. Himself

  916. And so

  917. He says

  918. To us

  919. Today

  920. All of us

  921. Come to

  922. Me

  923. That was

  924. The call

  925. That was

  926. First heard

  927. In Matthew

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  928. Chapter 4

  929. As Jesus

  930. Speaks to

  931. Peter and

  932. Andrew

  933. He says

  934. Come to

  935. Me

  936. Follow

  937. Me

  938. And that's

  939. The abiding

  940. Call for all

  941. Of us

  942. It's a word

  943. For all of

  944. Us

  945. Every morning

  946. We wake

  947. Jesus

  948. Is saying

  949. Come to

  950. Me

  951. Abide in

  952. Me

  953. Walk

  954. Close with

  955. Me

  956. Enjoy

  957. The rest

  958. That only

  959. I can

  960. Give

  961. And to

  962. Call to

  963. Come to

  964. Christ

  965. Everything

  966. We need

  967. Is

  968. Finding

  969. Christ

  970. Think

  971. About

  972. The

  973. Sayings

  974. In

  975. John's

  976. Gospel

  977. That speak

  978. To us

  979. About how

  980. Jesus

  981. He

  982. He

  983. He gives

  984. Us

  985. Everything

  986. That we

  987. Need

  988. John 6

  989. Jesus

  990. Says

  991. I am

  992. The bread

  993. Of life

  994. John

    John 8 chapter mention

  995. Chapter 8

  996. And 9

  997. Jesus

  998. Says

  999. I am

  1000. The light

  1001. Of the

  1002. World

  1003. John

    John 10 chapter mention

  1004. Chapter

  1005. 10

  1006. Jesus

  1007. Says

  1008. I am

  1009. The door

  1010. I am

  1011. The good

  1012. Shepherd

  1013. John 11

  1014. I am

  1015. The resurrection

  1016. And the

  1017. Life

  1018. John 14

  1019. I am

  1020. The way

  1021. And the

  1022. Truth

  1023. And the

  1024. Life

  1025. John 15

  1026. I am

  1027. The true

  1028. Vine

  1029. In Christ

  1030. Alone

  1031. We find

  1032. Help

  1033. In Christ

  1034. Alone

  1035. We find

  1036. Salvation

  1037. In Christ

  1038. Alone

  1039. We are

  1040. Forgiven

  1041. So we

  1042. Are called

  1043. To come

  1044. To Christ

  1045. And to

  1046. Remain

  1047. In Christ

  1048. And that's

  1049. What we

  1050. Profess

  1051. As we

  1052. Take our

  1053. Place at

  1054. The Lord's

  1055. Table

  1056. We profess

  1057. That we

  1058. Have come

  1059. To Jesus

  1060. For grace

  1061. We profess

  1062. That we

  1063. Are with

  1064. Him

  1065. A call

  1066. That's

  1067. Universal

  1068. That's

  1069. Wide

  1070. That's

  1071. Inclusive

  1072. A call

  1073. For sinners

  1074. A call

  1075. To come

  1076. To Christ

  1077. And finally

  1078. A call

  1079. To rest

  1080. Jesus

  1081. Says

  1082. Come to

  1083. Me

  1084. All who

  1085. Labor

  1086. And are

  1087. Heavy

  1088. Laden

  1089. And I

  1090. Will give

  1091. You

  1092. Rest

  1093. And in

  1094. Just a

  1095. Few

  1096. Moments

  1097. We'll

  1098. Come to

  1099. The Lord's

  1100. Table

  1101. We'll

  1102. Partake

  1103. Some of

  1104. Us of

  1105. The Lord's

  1106. Supper

  1107. It's a

  1108. Meal that

  1109. Was

  1110. Instituted

  1111. For us

  1112. In order

  1113. That we

  1114. Will be

  1115. Reminded

  1116. Of all

  1117. That Jesus

  1118. Did for

  1119. Us

  1120. On the

  1121. Cross

  1122. At

  1123. Calvary

  1124. And the

  1125. Cross

  1126. Can be

  1127. A hard

  1128. Place

  1129. For you

  1130. And I

  1131. To look

  1132. Because

  1133. There we

  1134. See

  1135. Our

  1136. Lord

  1137. There we

  1138. See the

  1139. One

  1140. Who was

  1141. Without

  1142. Sin

  1143. Taking

  1144. Our

  1145. Sin

  1146. Upon

  1147. Himself

  1148. One

  1149. Hymn

  1150. Writer

  1151. Wrote

  1152. It

  1153. Was

  1154. My

  1155. Sin

  1156. That

  1157. Held

  1158. Him

  1159. There

  1160. Until

  1161. It

  1162. Was

  1163. Accomplished

  1164. His

  1165. Dying

  1166. Breath

  1167. Has

  1168. Brought

  1169. Me

  1170. Life

  1171. I

  1172. Know

  1173. That

  1174. It

  1175. Is

  1176. Finished

  1177. And so

  1178. The cross

  1179. It's a

  1180. Hard

  1181. Place

  1182. In

  1183. Some

  1184. Ways

  1185. For us

  1186. To

  1187. Look

  1188. Because

  1189. There we

  1190. See

  1191. Our

  1192. Savior

  1193. Suffering

  1194. For us

  1195. We can

  1196. Read the

  1197. Account

  1198. Callum

  1199. Read

  1200. From

  1201. Luke 23

  1202. This

  1203. Morning

  1204. In

  1205. The

  1206. Home

  1207. We

  1208. Have

  1209. That

  1210. Short

  1211. Account

  1212. Of

  1213. Jesus

  1214. Suffering

  1215. On

  1216. The cross

  1217. The

  1218. Nails

  1219. Driven

  1220. Into

  1221. His

  1222. Hands

  1223. And

  1224. Feet

  1225. The

  1226. Sword

  1227. That

  1228. Peace

  1229. Pierced

  1230. His

  1231. Side

  1232. The

  1233. Gasping

  1234. For

  1235. Breath

  1236. The

  1237. Suffocation

  1238. The

  1239. Physical

  1240. Suffering

  1241. That

  1242. He

  1243. Endured

  1244. The

  1245. Acute

  1246. Pain

  1247. That

  1248. He

  1249. Endured

  1250. As

  1251. He

  1252. Hung

  1253. On

  1254. The

  1255. Cross

  1256. But

  1257. That

  1258. Was

  1259. Not

  1260. The

  1261. Worst

  1262. Of

  1263. It

  1264. Because

  1265. When

  1266. Jesus

  1267. Suffered

  1268. Physical

  1269. Pain

  1270. He

  1271. Said

  1272. Nothing

  1273. But

  1274. When

  1275. His

  1276. Father

  1277. Turned

  1278. His

  1279. Face

  1280. Away

  1281. From

  1282. Him

  1283. When

  1284. His

  1285. Father

  1286. Could

  1287. Not

  1288. Look

  1289. Upon

  1290. Him

  1291. Because

  1292. He

  1293. Was

  1294. Carrying

  1295. My

  1296. Sin

  1297. And

  1298. Yours

  1299. Jesus

  1300. In

  1301. That

  1302. Moment

  1303. The

  1304. God

  1305. Man

  1306. Who

  1307. Had

  1308. Always

  1309. Known

  1310. The

  1311. Rest

  1312. Of

  1313. Being

  1314. In

  1315. His

  1316. Father's

  1317. Presence

  1318. In

  1319. That

  1320. Moment

  1321. As

  1322. He

  1323. Hung

  1324. On

  1325. The

  1326. Cross

  1327. As

  1328. His

  1329. Father

  1330. Turns

  1331. His

  1332. Face

  1333. Away

  1334. Jesus

  1335. He

  1336. Lost

  1337. That

  1338. Sense

  1339. Of

  1340. Rest

  1341. And

  1342. As

  1343. He

  1344. Did

  1345. He

  1346. Cried

  1347. Out

  1348. My

  1349. God

  1350. My

  1351. God

  1352. Why

  1353. Have

  1354. You

  1355. Forsaken

  1356. !

  1357. Me!

  1358. And

  1359. The

  1360. Answer

  1361. Is

  1362. Because

  1363. Of

  1364. You!

  1365. And

  1366. Because

  1367. Of

  1368. Me!

  1369. It

  1370. Was

  1371. For

  1372. Your

  1373. Sake

  1374. And

  1375. Mine!

  1376. Jesus

  1377. On

  1378. The

  1379. Cross

  1380. He

  1381. Lost

  1382. His

  1383. Rest

  1384. So

  1385. That

  1386. We

  1387. Could

  1388. Receive

  1389. It

  1390. So

  1391. That

  1392. We

  1393. Could

  1394. Receive

  1395. The

  1396. Rest

  1397. The

  1398. Assurance

  1399. Of

  1400. Sins

  1401. Forgiven

  1402. And

  1403. Peace

  1404. With

  1405. God

  1406. And

  1407. Eternal

  1408. Life

  1409. And

  1410. That

  1411. Is

  1412. True

  1413. Rest

  1414. A

  1415. Million

  1416. Pounds

  1417. Pounds

  1418. In

  1419. The

  1420. Bank

  1421. Is

  1422. Not

  1423. Rest

  1424. A

  1425. Permanent

  1426. Job

  1427. For

  1428. Life

  1429. Is

  1430. Not

  1431. Rest

  1432. Marrying

  1433. The

  1434. Girl

  1435. Or

  1436. Boy

  1437. That

  1438. You

  1439. Dreamed

  1440. Of

  1441. That's

  1442. Not

  1443. Rest

  1444. Rest

  1445. For

  1446. Our

  1447. Soul

  1448. Eternal

  1449. Rest

  1450. Is

  1451. Found

  1452. Only

  1453. When

  1454. We

  1455. Respond

  1456. In

  1457. Faith

  1458. To

  1459. Christ's

  1460. Call

  1461. To

  1462. Come

  1463. To

  1464. Him

  1465. And

  1466. Every

  1467. Time

  1468. We

  1469. Come

  1470. To

  1471. The

  1472. Table

  1473. We

  1474. Taste

  1475. Afresh

  1476. Something

  1477. Of

  1478. The

  1479. Rest

  1480. That

  1481. Is

  1482. Promised

  1483. To

  1484. All

  1485. Who

  1486. Come

  1487. To

  1488. Jesus

  1489. Come

  1490. To

  1491. Me

  1492. All

  1493. Who

  1494. Labor

  1495. And

  1496. Are

  1497. Heavy

  1498. Laden

  1499. And

  1500. I

  1501. Will

  1502. Give

  1503. You

  1504. Rest

  1505. A

  1506. Universal

  1507. Call

  1508. A

  1509. Call

  1510. To

  1511. Sinners

  1512. A

  1513. Call

  1514. To

  1515. Christ

  1516. And

  1517. A

  1518. Call

  1519. To

  1520. Rest

  1521. So

  1522. Let

  1523. Us

  1524. Be

  1525. Encouraged

  1526. As

  1527. We

  1528. Hear

  1529. The

  1530. Call

  1531. Of

  1532. Jesus

  1533. To

  1534. Come

  1535. To

  1536. Him

  1537. And

  1538. To

  1539. Come

  1540. Back

  1541. To

  1542. Him

  1543. If

  1544. We're

  1545. Drifting

  1546. And

  1547. To

  1548. Take

  1549. Our

  1550. Place

  1551. As

  1552. His

  1553. People

  1554. At

  1555. His

  1556. Table

  1557. Let's

  1558. Pray

  1559. Heavenly

  1560. Father

  1561. We

  1562. Thank you

  1563. Once more

  1564. For the

  1565. Gospel

  1566. Call

  1567. And

  1568. We

  1569. Pray

  1570. That

  1571. You

  1572. Would

  1573. Give

  1574. Each

  1575. One

  1576. Of

  1577. Us

  1578. Amen

  1579. Ears

  1580. To

  1581. Hear

  1582. And

  1583. Eyes

  1584. To

  1585. See

  1586. And

  1587. Hearts

  1588. That

  1589. Will

  1590. Respond

  1591. To

  1592. The

  1593. Call

  1594. Of

  1595. Jesus

  1596. We

  1597. Pray

  1598. For

  1599. Any

  1600. Who

  1601. May

  1602. Be

  1603. Sitting

  1604. Here

  1605. This

  1606. Morning

  1607. And

  1608. Who

  1609. Are

  1610. Under

  1611. Attack

  1612. who wonder and stress

1613. as to whether they should even be at the table.

1614. We pray, Lord, that you would help them.

1615. When Satan tempts me to despair

1616. and tells me of the guilt within,

1617. upward I look and see him,

  1618. Jesus there,

1619. who made an end to all my sin

1620. because the sinless Saviour died.

1621. My guilty soul is counted free

1622. for God the just is satisfied

  1623. to look on him

  1624. and pardon me.

1625. Give to us, Lord, we pray,

1626. that sense of the security

  1627. of being in Christ

  1628. and the grace,

  1629. the lavish grace

1630. that is promised to us in Jesus.

1631. We pray for any who are here this morning

1632. and who are outside of the table,

1633. Lord, that you would strive with them

1634. from the youngest here to the oldest

1635. and we thank you, Lord,

1636. that you called the children

  1637. to come to you.

1638. And when there were those

1639. who tried to push the children back,

  1640. they were rebuked.

1641. And so we pray for the young ones here

1642. that they would hear the voice of Jesus

1643. and that they too would come

1644. and find that rest that the world cannot give

1645. that is found only in Jesus.

1646. So be at work, Lord, we pray

  1647. and bless us,

  1648. minister to us

1649. as we come to the table

  1650. that we would know

1651. the taste of the grace of Jesus once more.

1652. And we ask this in Jesus' name

  1653. and for his sake.

  1654. Amen.

1655. Just as we come to the table

  1656. very briefly,

1657. I want to think about where we look,

1658. where we look as we come to the table.

1659. And we're to look two ways.

1660. We're to look, first of all, at self.

  1661. In just a moment,

1662. we're going to read the words of Warrant.

  1663. And in the passage

1664. where the Lord's Supper is instituted,

1665. there is a verse that says,

  1666. let a person,

1667. let a man, woman, boy, girl,

1668. as they prepare to come,

1669. let a person examine himself.

1670. We're very good at examining other people

  1671. and saying,

1672. I'm surprised to see they were there.

1673. That's not your job or mine.

1674. Let a person examine himself.

1675. And as you and I examine self,

  1676. we see sin.

1677. If we've got any clarity,

1678. any sense of who we are,

  1679. as we examine self,

  1680. we see sin.

1681. Sin that we are repenting of day by day,

1682. but still we see sin.

1683. Is that a reason to stay away from the table?

1684. Well, no, it's a reason to come.

1685. It's God, the Holy Spirit,

  1686. who convicts us,

1687. who shows us our sin.

1688. The table is for sinners.

  1689. Remember the story,

1690. you'll have been told the story a thousand times.

  1691. Rabbi Duncan,

  1692. the minister,

  1693. the Old Testament professor,

1694. was preaching in a church one day,

1695. and he saw a woman he recognized

1696. as one of the Lord's people,

1697. who was broken by her sin.

1698. As the elements were being passed around,

  1699. they came to her,

1700. and she passed them on,

  1701. and dissolved into tears.

1702. And what does he do?

1703. He gets down from the place

  1704. that he was standing,

1705. and he takes the elements,

1706. and he goes to her,

  1707. and he says,

  1708. Tack it, woman.

  1709. It's for sinners.

  1710. So as we come,

  1711. we look at self.

  1712. We examine self,

  1713. and we see sin,

1714. and we repent of sin.

1715. But as Murray McShane says,

1716. and this takes us to the second place

  1717. that we look,

1718. the place that we fix our eyes.

  1719. We look at self,

1720. but then we fix our eyes on Jesus.

  1721. Robert Murray McShane said,

1722. for every look you take at self,

1723. take ten looks at Jesus.

1724. So if you want a text

  1725. to go forward with,

1726. you can take Isaiah chapter 45

    Isaiah 45 chapter mention

  1727. and verse 22,

  1728. which says,

  1729. Look unto me,

  1730. and be ye saved.

  1731. And that's the text

1732. that we go forward on.

  1733. Satan says to us,

1734. Look at the state of you.

1735. Look at the state of you

  1736. and your sin.

1737. But the Lord says to us,

  1738. Look at the sufficiency

  1739. of your Savior.

  1740. So looking to Jesus

  1741. and trusting in Jesus,

1742. saved by the blood of Jesus,

1743. with our faith in him,

  1744. we come.

  1745. to warrant the passage

  1746. from 1 Corinthians chapter 11

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  1747. and verse 23.

  1748. The Apostle Paul said,

1749. For I received from the Lord

1750. that which I also delivered to you,

  1751. that the Lord Jesus

  1752. on the same night

1753. in which he was betrayed

  1754. took bread.

1755. And when he had given thanks,

1756. he broke it and said,

  1757. Take, eat.

  1758. This is my body

1759. which is broken for you.

1760. Do this in remembrance of me.

  1761. In the same manner,

1762. he also took the cup

  1763. after supper,

  1764. saying,

1765. This cup is the new covenant

  1766. in my blood.

  1767. Do this as often

  1768. as you drink it

  1769. in remembrance of me.

  1770. For as often

1771. as you eat this bread

  1772. and drink this cup,

1773. you proclaim the Lord's death

  1774. until he comes.

  1775. Therefore,

  1776. whoever eats this bread

  1777. or drinks this cup

  1778. of the Lord

  1779. in an unworthy manner

  1780. will be guilty

  1781. of the body

1782. and blood of the Lord.

  1783. But let a man

  1784. examine himself

  1785. and so let him

  1786. eat of the bread

1787. and drink of the cup.

  1788. For he who eats

  1789. and drinks

  1790. in an unworthy manner

  1791. eats and drinks

  1792. judgment to himself,

  1793. not discerning

  1794. the Lord's body.

  1795. So following

  1796. the example

  1797. of Jesus,

  1798. let's now

  1799. pray

  1800. and give thanks

  1801. for this meal

  1802. that is prepared

  1803. for us.

  1804. Our Heavenly Father,

  1805. we thank you

  1806. for your word

  1807. that we have read.

  1808. We thank you

  1809. for this sacrament

  1810. that we are guided

  1811. and instructed in

  1812. as we come together

  1813. as your people.

  1814. We thank you

  1815. that although

  1816. these elements

  1817. before us

  1818. are just ordinary things

  1819. in terms of

  1820. their makeup

  1821. and the way

  1822. that we receive them,

  1823. we recognize

  1824. that they point us

  1825. to the body

  1826. of the Lord Jesus.

  1827. So we ask,

  1828. Lord,

  1829. that we would discern

  1830. the body

  1831. and the blood

  1832. of Christ,

  1833. that we would

  1834. remember him

1835. in all that we do

  1836. at this time.

  1837. We thank you

  1838. for the mystery

  1839. and the wonder

  1840. of the verse

  1841. that says,

  1842. he who knew

  1843. no sin

  1844. became sin

  1845. so that we

  1846. might become

  1847. righteous

  1848. in and through him.

  1849. We thank you

1850. that as John the Baptist

  1851. saw Jesus,

  1852. he said,

  1853. Behold,

  1854. the Lamb of God

  1855. who takes away

  1856. the sin

  1857. of the world.

  1858. We thank you

  1859. for the perfect sacrifice

  1860. that was

  1861. found in Christ

  1862. for the body

  1863. that was given

  1864. and the blood

  1865. that was shed

  1866. that makes atonement

  1867. for our sin.

  1868. To help us,

  1869. we pray,

  1870. as we take

  1871. the bread,

  1872. as we take

  1873. the wine,

  1874. to remember

  1875. the Lord Jesus.

1876. Take away from our minds

  1877. every distraction

  1878. and bring us

  1879. once more

  1880. to the cross

  1881. that we may

  1882. survey it

  1883. and that we

  1884. may once more

  1885. be touched

  1886. by the magnitude

  1887. of the love

  1888. of God.

  1889. This is love.

  1890. Not that we

  1891. love God,

  1892. but that he

  1893. loved us

  1894. and gave us

  1895. son to be

  1896. the atoning

  1897. sacrifice,

  1898. the propitiation

  1899. for our sin.

  1900. Give us eyes

  1901. to see it,

  1902. we pray.

  1903. enable us

  1904. to mourn

  1905. and repent

  1906. of the sin

  1907. that so easily

  1908. entangles us

  1909. and yet

  1910. enable us

  1911. to rejoice

  1912. in the salvation

  1913. that is secured

  1914. in and through

  1915. the sufficient

  1916. work,

  1917. the finished

  1918. work

  1919. of Jesus.

  1920. So meet with us,

  1921. Lord,

  1922. we pray.

  1923. Bless us,

  1924. we ask

  1925. in Jesus'

  1926. name.

  1927. Amen.

  1928. So the Lord

  1929. Jesus,

  1930. on the night

  1931. in which he

  1932. was betrayed,

  1933. took bread

  1934. and when he

  1935. had blessed

  1936. it and

  1937. given thanks,

  1938. he broke

  1939. it and

  1940. said,

  1941. this is my

  1942. body which

  1943. is for you.

  1944. Do this

  1945. in remembrance

  1946. of me.

  1947. And in the same

  1948. way,

  1949. he took the

  1950. cup

  1951. and said,

  1952. this cup

  1953. is the new

  1954. covenant

  1955. in my blood.

  1956. Do this

  1957. as often

  1958. as you drink

  1959. it

  1960. in remembrance

  1961. of me.

  1962. A very short

  1963. verse

  1964. as we

  1965. prepare to

  1966. rise from

  1967. the table.

  1968. Psalm 130

  1969. and verse 7,

  1970. second half

  1971. of verse 7,

  1972. it says,

  1973. plenteous redemption,

  1974. plenteous redemption

  1975. is ever

  1976. found

  1977. with him.

  1978. with Jesus

  1979. from all

  1980. our iniquities.

  1981. We are

  1982. forgiven.

  1983. but I want

  1984. to underline

  1985. that plenteous

  1986. redemption

  1987. is ever

  1988. found

  1989. with him.

  1990. And that's

  1991. a word

  1992. not just

  1993. for those

  1994. of us

  1995. who are

  1996. at the

  1997. table,

  1998. that's a

  1999. word

  2000. that is

  2001. extended

  2002. to those

  2003. who haven't

  2004. this morning

  2005. sat at

  2006. the Lord's

  2007. table.

  2008. I remember

  2009. taking a

  2010. service

  2011. in the,

  2012. it was in

  2013. the APC

  2014. church actually

  2015. in Stornley

  2016. must have

  2017. been 15

  2018. years ago.

  2019. And on

  2020. a Sunday

  2021. morning we

  2022. had preached

  2023. and we'd

  2024. had the

  2025. sacrament.

  2026. As far as

  2027. I could

  2028. see,

  2029. the elder

  2030. was assisting

  2031. me.

  2032. At that

  2033. time there

  2034. was no

  2035. minister there.

  2036. The elder

  2037. who was

  2038. assisting me

  2039. would stand

  2040. with me

  2041. and after

  2042. everyone I

  2043. could see

  2044. he wanted

  2045. to be

  2046. servant,

  2047. he served.

  2048. The elder

  2049. stepped

  2050. forward and

  2051. he took

  2052. the jug

  2053. of wine

  2054. and he

  2055. filled the

  2056. cup back

  2057. up and

  2058. he said

  2059. nothing to

  2060. me and

  2061. he hadn't

  2062. discussed

  2063. it with me.

  2064. And I

  2065. looked at

  2066. him and he

  2067. looked at

  2068. me and I

  2069. looked at

  2070. him and he

  2071. looked at

  2072. me and I

  2073. wondered if

  2074. this was his

  2075. way of saying

  2076. you've forgotten

  2077. somebody and I

  2078. was scanning

  2079. around the

  2080. congregation to

  2081. see if there

  2082. was somebody

  2083. I'd forgotten

  2084. but nothing

  2085. was said.

  2086. And so I

  2087. prayed and

  2088. we had the

  2089. final praise

  2090. and blessed

  2091. the benediction.

  2092. As soon as

  2093. the service

  2094. was finished

  2095. I went to

  2096. the elder

  2097. and I

  2098. said did

  2099. I forget

  2100. someone?

  2101. And he

  2102. said I

  2103. don't think

  2104. so.

  2105. And I

  2106. said well

  2107. why after

  2108. everybody was

  2109. served did

  2110. you fill the

  2111. cup back

  2112. up?

  2113. And he

  2114. said because

  2115. I want

  2116. everyone to

  2117. be able to

  2118. see that

  2119. there's more

  2120. left.

  2121. And you

  2122. can see

  2123. this morning

  2124. that there

  2125. is more

  2126. left.

  2127. Plenteous

  2128. redemption

  2129. is ever

  2130. found with

  2131. him.

  2132. And the

  2133. call continues

  2134. to be

  2135. extended

  2136. come to

  2137. me.

  2138. Be with

  2139. me

  2140. says

  2141. Jesus.

  2142. There is

  2143. more grace

  2144. there is

  2145. more

  2146. left.

  2147. Come

  2148. to him

  2149. each one

  2150. of us.

  2151. Let's

  2152. pray.

  2153. Our

  2154. heavenly

  2155. father we

  2156. thank you

  2157. for it.

  2158. We thank

  2159. you once

  2160. more that

  2161. you've

  2162. allowed us

  2163. to be

  2164. gathered

  2165. around the

  2166. table of

  2167. the Lord

  2168. Jesus.

  2169. We thank you

  2170. that once

  2171. more we

  2172. have been

  2173. able to

  2174. remember the

  2175. Lord's

  2176. death in

  2177. place

  2178. securing our

  2179. salvation.

  2180. We thank you

  2181. that Jesus

  2182. is our

  2183. redeemer.

  2184. And we

  2185. pray that as

  2186. we rise from

  2187. the table

  2188. we would do

  2189. so with

  2190. joy.

  2191. The joy of

  2192. your salvation

  2193. of us

  2194. restored to

  2195. us.

  2196. We pray that

  2197. we would

  2198. rise from the

  2199. table

  2200. strengthened

  2201. and ready to

  2202. go back into

  2203. the world

  2204. to be

  2205. soft and

  2206. be light.

  2207. And we

  2208. pray Lord

  2209. that as we

  2210. go from

  2211. this place

  2212. we would

  2213. go encouraged

  2214. in the

  2215. gospel.

  2216. We think

  2217. even of the

  2218. encouragement

  2219. that is

  2220. given to

  2221. those who

  2222. are given.

  2223. Every time

  2224. we gather

  2225. around this

  2226. table we

  2227. are aware

  2228. of those

  2229. that we

  2230. sit with

  2231. but we

  2232. are also

  2233. conscious

  2234. of those

  2235. who once

  2236. sat with

  2237. us and

  2238. we have

  2239. gone from

  2240. time into

  2241. eternity.

  2242. And yet

  2243. we thank

  2244. you that

  2245. we have

  2246. the promise

  2247. in Christ

  2248. that all

  2249. who are

  2250. believing in

  2251. him, all

  2252. who are

  2253. with him

  2254. have eternal

  2255. life.

  2256. So we

  2257. pray for

  2258. any whose

  2259. hearts are

  2260. sore, any

  2261. who may

  2262. have that

  2263. sense of

  2264. loss, so

  2265. missing

  2266. those who

  2267. are absent

  2268. who are

  2269. once with

  2270. them.

  2271. We pray

  2272. for your

  2273. comfort to

  2274. be given

  2275. to them.

  2276. And we

  2277. pray for

  2278. those who

  2279. have sat

  2280. through another

  2281. communion season

  2282. and who

  2283. have not

  2284. yet come.

  2285. If there

  2286. are any

  2287. who have

  2288. heard the

  2289. voice of

  2290. Jesus saying

  2291. come unto

  2292. me and

  2293. rest, we

  2294. pray that

  2295. they would

  2296. not hesitate

  2297. but that

  2298. they and

  2299. we day

  2300. by day

  2301. would come

  2302. to the

  2303. Lord Jesus

  2304. and find

  2305. the rest

  2306. that is

  2307. found only

  2308. in him.

  2309. Hear our

  2310. prayers,

  2311. part us

  2312. with your

  2313. blessing we

  2314. pray and

  2315. we pray

  2316. these things

  2317. in Jesus

  2318. name.

  2319. Amen.

  2320. We'll

  2321. sing to

  2322. conclude

  2323. the

  2324. verses

  2325. from

  2326. Psalm

  2327. 72

  2328. Psalm

  2329. 72

  2330. you'll

  2331. find on

  2332. page

  2333. T14

  2334. and we

  2335. sing from

  2336. verses 17

  2337. to verse 19

  2338. of the

  2339. psalm.

  2340. His name

  2341. forever

  2342. shall

  2343. endure,

  2344. last like

  2345. the son

  2346. of

  2348. Men

  2349. shall be

  2350. blessed

  2351. in him

  2352. and

  2353. blessed

  2354. all nations

  2355. shall

  2356. him

  2357. call.

  2358. We'll

  2359. stand to

  2360. sing to

  2361. God's

  2362. praise.

  2363. His name

  2364. forever

  2365. shall

  2366. endure

  2367. last night

  2368. the son

  2369. it

  2370. shall

  2371. and

  2372. shall

  2373. be

  2374. blessed

  2375. in him

  2376. and

  2377. blessed

  2378. all nations

  2379. shall

  2380. him

  2381. call.

  2382. Now

  2383. blessed

  2384. be
