  1. 10 and read at verse 11 and verse 12 there.

  2. Oseah chapter 10 at verse 11.

  3. Ephraim was a trained calf that loved to thresh, and I spared her fair neck.

  4. ! But I will put Ephraim to the yoke. Judah must plough, Jacob must harrow for himself.

  5. Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap steadfast love, break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord,

  6. that he may come and reign righteousness upon you.

  7. There are perhaps certain books that you go to in the Bible, and you can turn to them,

  8. and there's always a danger of feeling a sense of despondency and a sense of despair.

  9. Books like the book of Acts, and you see great things happening in the book of Acts.

  10. See the early chapters of the book of Acts, and you find thousands being added to the church in one day.

  11. And you say to yourself, how can that be discouraging?

  12. Well, it's because when you're reading it, you think to yourself, if only we were seeing days like that ourselves.

  13. We feel a sense of despondency, wishing that the Lord would pour out his blessing in that way.

  14. We would see thousands added to the church in one day.

  15. So if we don't see it happening, we maybe begin to question ourselves, to question our prayers,

  16. to question things that we're doing, to question maybe even God.

  17. Where is God in the midst of everything that's going on in our day?

  18. And you ask, do we live in the days that they lived in the days of Acts?

  19. Do we live in a similar kind of time?

  20. Well, we do, but we don't always see it.

  21. The media doesn't present great things happening for the gospel around the world.

  22. The main media, that is.

  23. But if you listen to people, missionaries from around the world,

  24. if you listen to people who are going out with the gospel around the world,

  25. even in our own nation, there are great things happening.

  26. The Lord is working.

  27. And so we shouldn't lose heart, because the good news is going out and people are responding.

  28. So maybe we don't see it in our own midst, maybe we don't see it in the way we would long to see it,

  29. but the Lord is still working.

  30. Whether it's thousands, whether it's one or two,

  31. we are constantly reminded that the Lord is working.

  32. So there can be a sense of despondency when things are good,

  33. but there are other books that you can turn to,

  34. and you can feel a sense of despondency because things are so bad.

  35. We see it very often throughout the Old Testament,

  36. and here's another example of it.

  37. We looked at Habakkuk recently,

  38. and we were seeing there how things were so difficult,

  39. and here the day of Hosea.

  40. As well, it was a difficult time.

  41. But I want us to reflect this evening on Hosea and the hardships that he had to endure,

  42. and just to see how it still gives us hope.

  43. It's a book that's full of many difficulties,

  44. difficulties for Hosea himself and difficult days for God's people,

  45. and yet we still see God at work.

  46. And if we were to ask ourselves,

  47. do we see this kind of day in our own experience just now,

  48. we would say yes.

  49. The gentlemen have been praying.

  50. We've been reminded of so many situations around our nation

  51. or around the world that show us the kind of despondency and despair that we live in,

  52. the uncertainty of the world in which we live,

  53. the pain and grief that's around us both in a local sense but also nationally and internationally.

  54. There's so much going on that would leave us thinking,

  55. where can we go?

  56. How can we go forward?

  57. And that's very much the kind of day that Hosea was living in.

  58. But what you see is God is faithful.

  59. God is still with him,

  60. and God is still calling a people to himself.

  61. And you see it very much here in verse 12 of chapter 10.

  62. So for yourselves righteousness,

  63. reap steadfast love.

  64. This is a reminder here of God's covenant love towards his people.

  65. For it is time to seek the Lord.

  66. So it's clear that people have been going away from the Lord.

  67. They've turned their back on the Lord,

  68. and he's saying it is time to seek the Lord,

  69. that he may come and rain righteousness upon you,

  70. that you might know his blessing.

  71. And it was Hosea that was called into this ministry as a prophet.

  72. And Hosea, with his own life, as we'll see in a moment,

  73. he didn't find it easy to do it.

  74. He didn't come into it in an easy background either,

  75. and yet God used him in a powerful way,

  76. and yet he had to be faithful.

  77. He had good news to give,

  78. but what he found was a people who didn't want to hear.

  79. And that can resonate with ourselves today as well.

  80. Think of the Gideons,

  81. or good news for everyone as it's called now,

  82. putting out Bibles,

  83. putting out the word of God to people,

  84. individuals, to schools, to hospitals, hotels,

  85. all of these things used to be so easy for them to get the word of God in.

  86. And yet now people are saying,

  87. we don't want it.

  88. Or if they take it,

  89. they put it in a corner somewhere,

  90. so that then if somebody asks,

  91. they can get a Bible.

  92. Whereas it used to be in many hotels,

  93. you'd go in,

  94. you'd open the drawer,

  95. you'd find it on the bedside cabinet,

  96. there would be a Bible there.

  97. There is good news,

  98. but people don't want to receive it.

  99. And that's the same for Hosea.

  100. He had great news to give the people,

  101. but they had so turned their back on God

  102. that they didn't want to hear.

  103. And it's hard work for him,

  104. but yet he stays faithful to the course.

  105. And it's a reminder to ourselves,

  106. in whatever we are doing for the Lord,

  107. to stay faithful to him,

  108. and to trust him,

  109. and to serve him,

  110. both faithfully and cheerfully.

  111. In Colossians chapter 3, verse 17,

    Colossians 3:17

  112. it says,

  113. whatever you do,

  114. whether in word or deed,

  115. do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  116. So we are to be faithful in the name of Jesus.

  117. But it also says,

  118. giving thanks to God the Father through him.

  119. So there's to be a sense of thanksgiving,

  120. a sense of delight and cheerfulness

  121. in what we are doing for the Lord.

  122. We are serving our King.

  123. We are serving our Lord.

  124. And so Hosea worked in the midst of great difficulty,

  125. but with that great assurance

  126. that he was serving his Lord.

  127. And when you see the people,

  128. it's reflected in what they wanted in society

  129. in verse 3 there.

  130. For now they will say,

  131. we have no king,

  132. for we do not fear the Lord.

  133. They don't want God,

  134. but they don't want a king over them either.

  135. In a natural way,

  136. and a king,

  137. what could he do for us?

  138. There's this sense of confidence

  139. in themselves,

  140. and in what they are doing for themselves.

  141. We don't need the Lord.

  142. We don't need a king.

  143. We can look after ourselves.

  144. And that's the world today as well.

  145. We don't need the Lord.

  146. We don't need anybody to rule over us.

  147. We can get on fine by ourselves.

  148. But the gospel is what was needed here,

  149. the good news,

  150. and it's the good news

  151. that our world needs today.

  152. And in Hosea here,

  153. we just want to see three things

  154. that we can take from these verses,

  155. verse 11 and 12.

  156. Three things that remind us

  157. just to be faithful

  158. in the midst of difficult days.

  159. And the first thing we see

  160. is that we are in difficult days,

  161. and Hosea was in a difficult day.

  162. But then we see it was a day of dedication,

  163. a day of devotion,

  164. a day of giving to the Lord.

  165. And then thirdly,

  166. we see a day not to despair,

  167. a day not to despair.

  168. So it was a difficult day first.

  169. If you know anything of Hosea,

  170. maybe you know his own background,

  171. his own life,

  172. his home situation wasn't easy.

  173. We see that in chapter one of this book.

  174. Hosea's family life was far from straightforward.

  175. He was told by the Lord

  176. to take a wife who was unfaithful,

  177. and then he had children.

  178. And you look at the names of the children,

  179. and they reveal so much of what was going on

  180. in his own experience,

  181. but also it was reflecting the nation of the Lord.

  182. So you see that in chapter one.

  183. You see in verse two down to verse 11 there,

  184. it speaks about Hosea's home setting.

  185. And he had children.

  186. One was called Jezreel,

  187. and behind that name was,

  188. it means I will scatter.

  189. I will scatter.

  190. Then he had a daughter,

  191. and she was called Lo-ru-ama,

  192. which means no mercy,

  193. as you see it here in English.

  194. No mercy is the name of the daughter.

  195. And then another son,

  196. Lo-ami,

  197. which means not my people.

  198. And this is just reflecting

  199. what's going on around us,

  200. a people,

  201. as a nation.

  202. That the Lord is showing a people

  203. who are unfaithful to him.

  204. And through his children,

  205. he's showing what he's going to do.

  206. He's going to scatter his people.

  207. He's not going to show mercy to his people.

  208. And he's going to say,

  209. you are not my people.

  210. So as you are rejecting me,

  211. this is the outcome.

  212. And so Hosea's life was a witness,

  213. was showing the people

  214. just what their relationship

  215. of the people with God was like.

  216. They have turned their back on God,

  217. just like we saw there

  218. in verse 3 of chapter 10.

  219. We have no king.

  220. We do not fear the Lord.

  221. So we don't need anything from God.

  222. There was this disobedience.

  223. But because of this,

  224. there was consequences.

  225. And you see that as you read through.

  226. In chapter 8, for example,

  227. it's very much a vine

  228. that is being described here as the people.

  229. And the vine is not bearing fruit

  230. or it's bearing sour fruit.

  231. And in chapter 8,

  232. verse 7 and 8 and verse 14,

  233. you see it very much seen there

  234. that in verse 14, for example,

  235. Israel has forgotten his maker

  236. and built palaces.

  237. And Judah has multiplied fortified cities.

  238. So I will send fire upon his cities

  239. and I shall devour her strongholds.

  240. It's very much a sense of judgment.

  241. The people have broken the covenant with God.

  242. They have forgotten their maker.

  243. They have replaced God

  244. with an idol in the form of a calf.

  245. Verse 5 and 6 of chapter 8 say that to us

  246. and also verse 5 of chapter 10.

  247. So they're more concerned

  248. about this golden calf

  249. that their idol that they've made

  250. than the fear of losing God.

  251. And what you see is

  252. the complete turnaround from the people.

  253. Instead of,

  254. and there's two place names

  255. that are important here as well.

  256. First of all, you have Bethel.

  257. And Bethel is the place

  258. where God is worshipped.

  259. And that's what the people had had.

  260. The place that they would worship God.

  261. It's mentioned in verse 15.

  262. Bethel's mentioned there.

  263. But they have turned from Bethel,

  264. the place they worship God,

  265. to Beth-Avon.

  266. And this means the place of wickedness.

  267. So they've turned away from the place

  268. of worshipping God.

  269. And they've turned instead

  270. to the place of wickedness,

  271. the house of wickedness.

  272. So everything that we're seeing here

  273. is outlining the relationship

  274. of the people to God.

  275. A difficult day.

  276. But is our own day

  277. any different?

  278. Because we're seeing

  279. almost exact same things.

  280. We do not fear the Lord.

  281. What can a king do for us?

  282. We've turned away from Bethel,

  283. the place of worshipping God,

  284. to Beth-Avon,

  285. the place of wickedness.

  286. And you see it

  287. in so many different ways.

  288. Where the vine

  289. that was once here

  290. has not been tended.

  291. The vine of the word of God.

  292. Because we have known

  293. God's favour.

  294. We have known

  295. God's blessing.

  296. But the vine

  297. has been turned away from.

  298. And we're,

  299. instead of tending it,

  300. we've just abandoned it.

  301. We've abandoned God.

  302. And we're bearing

  303. sour fruit.

  304. You think of places.

  305. The place of worship

  306. of God, Bethel,

  307. became,

  308. they turned instead

  309. to Beth-Avon,

  310. the place of wickedness.

  311. There's so many examples

  312. of that

  313. around our nation.

  314. For example,

  315. in Aberdeen,

  316. the church where

  317. Douglas Macmillan

  318. once ministered

  319. back in the 60s

  320. and 70s.

  321. It was changed

  322. into a nightclub

  323. back in the 80s.

  324. And what did they call it?

  325. Instead of being

  326. the place of worship,

  327. it was called

  328. the ministry of sin.

  329. Place of wickedness.

  330. Place of just

  331. turning away

  332. from God.

  333. And you see it

  334. in so many ways

  335. throughout our nation.

  336. Places that were

  337. once the foundation

  338. of our Christian faith

  339. are now mocked

  340. or turned into

  341. other things.

  342. There's a hotel

  343. in Peebles

  344. down in the borders.

  345. and it's an old

  346. building.

  347. And above the doorway,

  348. the words carved

  349. into the stone

  350. was,

  351. prepare to meet

  352. thy God.

  353. It was like

  354. there was a warning.

  355. Warning to the people

  356. as they would come,

  357. prepare to meet

  358. thy God.

  359. Not in the sense

  360. there was danger,

  361. but just that God

  362. was real.

  363. And so they were

  364. to be aware of God

  365. and to be ready

  366. to meet God.

  367. But now it's just

  368. something that's used

  369. as a joke

  370. as people go in.

  371. Something just for

  372. a bit of laughter

  373. as people go in.

  374. The seriousness

  375. of being ready

  376. to meet God

  377. is just taken away

  378. from it.

  379. So Bethel,

  380. the place of worship

  381. even in our own land,

  382. has become Beth-Avon.

  383. The place of wickedness.

  384. The place of mocking God

  385. and turning our back

  386. on God.

  387. So,

  388. just like Hosea's day,

  389. it is a difficult day.

  390. So,

  391. what can we do

  392. in difficult days?

  393. Where do we start?

  394. Well,

  395. with Hosea,

  396. as you see here,

  397. it's a day

  398. for dedication.

  399. It's a day

  400. for dedication.

  401. It's not a day

  402. to forget God

  403. or turn away

  404. from God.

  405. And as you go through

  406. the book of Hosea,

  407. it's a challenging book

  408. to go through.

  409. There's so many images

  410. of despair

  411. and hopelessness.

  412. But in the midst,

  413. you find some gems

  414. and wisdom

  415. and hope.

  416. Just like Habakkuk,

  417. which we looked through

  418. recently

  419. when we were thinking

  420. of the nuggets of gold

  421. that you find

  422. in the midst of darkness.

  423. Here again in Hosea,

  424. we have that same theme

  425. as well.

  426. In the midst of

  427. all the difficulties,

  428. in the midst of everything

  429. that is going wrong

  430. in their day,

  431. there's still hope.

  432. And that's what we have

  433. in verse 11

  434. and verse 12.

  435. There is hope.

  436. And it's all about

  437. turning back

  438. to God,

  439. dedicating

  440. ourselves

  441. to Him

  442. and continuing

  443. to show others

  444. the need

  445. to turn

  446. to God.

  447. So what we have

  448. in verse 11

  449. reminds us

  450. that the people

  451. were made

  452. with a purpose.

  453. Ephraim

  454. was a trained

  455. calf

  456. that loved

  457. to thresh

  458. and I have spared

  459. her fair name.

  460. But I will put

  461. Ephraim

  462. to the yoke.

  463. Judah must plough.

  464. Jacob must harrow

  465. for himself.

  466. It's a reminder

  467. there that

  468. we were made

  469. to worship

  470. God,

  471. to serve God.

  472. the trained calf

  473. as is mentioned there.

  474. That's the illustration

  475. for us.

  476. We are made

  477. for God

  478. and to worship God.

  479. But we turn away.

  480. Hosea was faithful.

  481. Amos,

  482. another prophet,

  483. was faithful.

  484. Habakkuk,

  485. Isaiah,

  486. the prophets

  487. faithfully proclaiming

  488. the good news

  489. of the gospel.

  490. But what kind of people

  491. did they come up against?

  492. Well,

  493. we find,

  494. just what we find today,

  495. a stubborn people.

  496. The trained calf

  497. as it's mentioned there,

  498. the one

  499. that the Lord

  500. is able to use,

  501. is contrasted

  502. in chapter 4,

  503. verse 16.

  504. There it says,

  505. like a stubborn heifer,

  506. Israel is stubborn.

  507. Can the Lord

  508. now feed them

  509. like a lamb

  510. in a broad pasture?

  511. the stubborn heifer.

  512. They will not listen.

  513. They will not budge.

  514. Are we like that sometimes?

  515. Are we sometimes

  516. the stubborn heifer

  517. it's talking about here

  518. where we won't budge?

  519. We hold on to things.

  520. Yes, we are.

  521. And they're all around us too.

  522. We've all got that stubborn nature in us.

  523. But there are many who,

  524. when it comes to hearing the gospel,

  525. even just wanting to

  526. be close to them

  527. in the sense of

  528. giving them the gospel,

  529. they're stubborn.

  530. They don't want

  531. to hear.

  532. And it's hard

  533. to keep going in the work

  534. when that's what you're

  535. coming up against.

  536. But yet,

  537. we are being reminded

  538. in these verses

  539. that God has made

  540. everyone

  541. with a soul.

  542. God has made everyone

  543. with a soul

  544. that is accountable

  545. to God.

  546. We are made

  547. to worship God.

  548. And therefore,

  549. we don't lose heart.

  550. We don't lose heart.

  551. We keep on

  552. knowing that God

  553. has his people.

  554. Knowing that God

  555. is working

  556. in his people.

  557. And even though

  558. as it goes on here

  559. to talk about the yoke

  560. and the plough

  561. and all of these things,

  562. it's showing the hard work

  563. of delivering

  564. the good news

  565. of the gospel.

  566. Even into verse 12,

  567. break up

  568. your fallow ground.

  569. It is hard ground.

  570. It's a difficult ground

  571. to work.

  572. We're coming into

  573. this season now

  574. with March time.

  575. Many people

  576. start getting

  577. plots ready

  578. or fields ready

  579. for planting.

  580. But if you start

  581. on new ground,

  582. it's hard.

  583. Fallow ground,

  584. it's hard

  585. to break into.

  586. It's hard

  587. to break down.

  588. And it's going

  589. to take time

  590. to turn that ground

  591. into good ground.

  592. But there's still

  593. that need

  594. to plough.

  595. There's still

  596. that need

  597. to work,

  598. to break up

  599. the fallow ground.

  600. It's not always easy.

  601. And that's

  602. the image

  603. of the vineyard

  604. that you see

  605. right throughout.

  606. We'll see a vineyard

  607. that takes time.

  608. It takes tending to

  609. in order to bear

  610. good fruit.

  611. And so it is

  612. with the ministry

  613. of the gospel.

  614. It needs

  615. that dedication.

  616. It needs

  617. that devotion

  618. to it.

  619. And that's

  620. the kind of people

  621. that God calls

  622. on us

  623. to be as well,

  624. to be faithful

  625. as we do

  626. all for the Lord.

  627. And you see it

  628. in different ways

  629. throughout the scriptures

  630. as well.

  631. In different ways

  632. we are not to give up,

  633. we are not to lose heart.

  634. Jesus in Luke 18

  635. he spoke the parable

  636. of the woman

  637. who kept coming

  638. to the master.

  639. And it's called

  640. in verse 1

  641. he says

  642. he told them

  643. a parable

  644. to the effect

  645. that they ought

  646. always to pray

  647. and not lose heart.

  648. Always to pray

  649. and not lose heart.

  650. To break up

  651. the fallow ground.

  652. To not give up

  653. in our prayers.

  654. And to keep on

  655. praying.

  656. In Psalm 126

  657. which we sang together

  658. it says there

  659. he goes out weeping

  660. carrying seed to sow

  661. will return

  662. with songs of joy

  663. carrying sheaves

  664. with him.

  665. So

  666. you're going out

  667. weeping,

  668. you're going out

  669. sowing,

  670. you're wondering

  671. what's going to come.

  672. You're maybe feeling

  673. a sense of despair

  674. and yet the Lord

  675. assures

  676. there will be a day

  677. when you return

  678. in song

  679. carrying the sheaves

  680. the harvest

  681. will come.

  682. The Lord

  683. can do it.

  684. We're reminded

  685. even how Jesus

  686. himself

  687. wept over

  688. his people.

  689. Luke 19

    Luke 19:41

  690. verse 41

  691. as he approached

  692. Jerusalem

  693. and saw the city

  694. he wept over it

  695. and said

  696. if you

  697. even you

  698. had known

  699. on this day

  700. what would bring

  701. you peace

  702. but now

  703. it is hidden

  704. from your eyes.

  705. He was weeping

  706. because he had

  707. what could bring

  708. them peace

  709. yet it's hidden

  710. and so

  711. we are in

  712. difficult days

  713. but yet it's still

  714. a day

  715. for dedication

  716. a day

  717. for devotion

  718. to the Lord

  719. because

  720. we have

  721. what can bring

  722. peace

  723. to the people

  724. so we still

  725. have hope

  726. and so

  727. finally in 30

  728. we see here

  729. it's a day

  730. not to despair

  731. it's a day

  732. not to despair

  733. as chapter

  734. 10

  735. verse 12

  736. tells us

  737. there is this hope

  738. sow for yourselves

  739. righteousness

  740. reap

  741. steadfast love

  742. break up

  743. your fallow ground

  744. for it is time

  745. to seek

  746. the Lord

  747. that he may come

  748. and rain

  749. righteousness

  750. upon you

  751. one commentator

  752. put it this way

  753. Hosea

  754. is a story

  755. heavy

  756. with tragedy

  757. but buoyant

  758. in hope

  759. I think that's

  760. just a great way

  761. of putting it

  762. heavy with tragedy

  763. there's so much

  764. that's tragic

  765. in the book

  766. of Hosea

  767. but yet it's

  768. buoyant

  769. with hope

  770. because there is

  771. still

  772. the hope

  773. of the Lord

  774. and why

  775. why can they hope

  776. why could Hosea

  777. hope

  778. because the Lord

  779. because the Lord

  780. is with him

  781. the Lord

  782. is there

  783. it is time

  784. to seek

  785. the Lord

  786. the Lord

  787. is bringing them

  788. down to that point

  789. where there's

  790. nowhere else

  791. to go

  792. and again

  793. that's the kind

  794. of world

  795. in which we live

  796. a world

  797. that as

  798. you often see

  799. the wheel

  800. go round

  801. where there's

  802. a turning

  803. away from God

  804. after a time

  805. of blessing

  806. and we can

  807. have everything

  808. we do not

  809. fear the Lord

  810. we don't need

  811. a king

  812. over us

  813. until we come

  814. to the point

  815. where we're

  816. so low

  817. we've got

  818. nowhere else

  819. to go

  820. and where

  821. do we go

  822. then

  823. well that's

  824. the answer

  825. that Hosea

  826. has

  827. it is time

  828. to seek

  829. the Lord

  830. and we have

  831. a day to day

  832. where people

  833. are looking

  834. for these answers

  835. and we have

  836. the good news

  837. to give them

  838. it is time

  839. to seek

  840. the Lord

  841. and we should

  842. be encouraged

  843. that there are

  844. things that are

  845. happening

  846. where the

  847. Lord

  848. is working

  849. I'm speaking

  850. to somebody

  851. this week

  852. who was speaking

  853. about

  854. Christian unions

  855. and the

  856. blessings that

  857. they are

  858. in schools

  859. and we're

  860. privileged here

  861. to have

  862. some of our

  863. schools have

  864. Christian unions

  865. being run

  866. in them

  867. it's a great

  868. delight

  869. but we maybe

  870. think to ourselves

  871. if only

  872. they were

  873. happening in

  874. other places

  875. in the mainland

  876. they are

  877. and in

  878. amazing ways

  879. there were

  880. an update

  881. given where

  882. schools down

  883. in the borders

  884. there's just

  885. a hunger

  886. for the gospel

  887. because

  888. the young

  889. people

  890. they know

  891. that there's

  892. something missing

  893. they know

  894. the answers

  895. aren't coming

  896. in the way

  897. that we're

  898. going

  899. and in many

  900. ways

  901. they're seeking

  902. the Lord

  903. great

  904. opportunities

  905. and there

  906. is hope

  907. because

  908. the gospel

  909. is always

  910. filled with

  911. hope

  912. we were

  913. down in

  914. Manchester

  915. a few

  916. years ago

  917. in a small

  918. town

  919. south of

  920. Manchester

  921. and on

  922. the Sunday

  923. on the Lord's

  924. Day we

  925. went along

  926. to church

  927. in the

  928. town

  929. and we

  930. went in

  931. got a

  932. very warm

  933. welcome

  934. into the

  935. place

  936. and there

  937. was quite

  938. a number

  939. in it

  940. was a

  941. reasonable

  942. congregation

  943. but as

  944. we were

  945. looking around

  946. we thought

  947. there's not

  948. many young

  949. people here

  950. it's mostly

  951. a more

  952. elderly

  953. congregation

  954. or middle

  955. aged

  956. congregation

  957. there's one

  958. or two

  959. young people

  960. and one

  961. or two

  962. infants

  963. but as

  964. as we

  965. sat down

  966. the preacher

  967. came in

  968. one of the

  969. first things

  970. he said

  971. was

  972. we're going

  973. to be

  974. praying

  975. today for

  976. our youth

  977. group

  978. who are

  979. away

  980. for the

  981. weekend

  982. 80 of

  983. them have

  984. gone

  985. on a

  986. trip

  987. and I

  988. was like

  989. we're

  990. blown

  991. away

  992. 80

  993. children

  994. and if

  995. they'd

  996. been there

  997. as well

  998. the place

  999. would have

  1000. been pretty

  1001. much full

  1002. and you're

  1003. thinking to

  1004. yourself

  1005. we didn't

  1006. expect this

  1007. we didn't

  1008. expect this

  1009. you almost

  1010. think that

  1011. the gospel

  1012. has come

  1013. out of our

  1014. nation

  1015. it hasn't

  1016. there are

  1017. many congregations

  1018. all over

  1019. the country

  1020. where the

  1021. Lord is

  1022. working and

  1023. working in

  1024. amazing ways

  1025. so we don't

  1026. lose hope

  1027. we don't

  1028. lose heart

  1029. and Hosea

  1030. didn't

  1031. lose heart

  1032. he kept

  1033. devoting

  1034. himself

  1035. to

  1036. proclaiming

  1037. the word

  1038. of God

  1039. now at the

  1040. beginning we

  1041. said about

  1042. his children

  1043. and what

  1044. their names

  1045. meant

  1046. Jezreel

  1047. I will

  1048. scatter

  1049. my people

  1050. how he had

  1051. then a

  1052. daughter

  1053. no mercy

  1054. and then

  1055. another son

  1056. not my

  1057. people

  1058. but it's

  1059. actually in

  1060. these names

  1061. that you

  1062. see the

  1063. hope that

  1064. he had

  1065. because if

  1066. you just

  1067. turn back

  1068. to chapter

  1069. two as

  1070. we conclude

  1071. you see

  1072. there the

  1073. names

  1074. mentioned

  1075. again

  1076. from verse

  1077. 20

  1078. I will

  1079. betroth you

  1080. to my

  1081. faithfulness

  1082. and you

  1083. shall know

  1084. the Lord

  1085. and in

  1086. that day

  1087. I will

  1088. answer

  1089. declares

  1090. the Lord

  1091. I will

  1092. answer

  1093. the heavens

  1094. and they

  1095. shall answer

  1096. the earth

  1097. and the earth

  1098. shall answer

  1099. the grain

  1100. the wine

  1101. the oil

  1102. and they

  1103. shall answer

  1104. Jezreel

  1105. and I will

  1106. sow her

  1107. for myself

  1108. in the land

  1109. so you're

  1110. seeing with

  1111. Jezreel

  1112. that although

  1113. they were

  1114. going to be

  1115. scattered

  1116. there was

  1117. going to be

  1118. a sowing

  1119. and if there

  1120. was a sowing

  1121. there would

  1122. be a harvest

  1123. so the harvest

  1124. although it

  1125. was difficult

  1126. days

  1127. was promised

  1128. and then

  1129. you go on

  1130. and I

  1131. will have

  1132. mercy

  1133. on no

  1134. mercy

  1135. so the

  1136. Lord

  1137. is able

  1138. to show

  1139. mercy

  1140. even in

  1141. the midst

  1142. of no

  1143. mercy

  1144. the Lord

  1145. is able

  1146. to show

  1147. mercy

  1148. and then

  1149. he goes

  1150. on

  1151. and I

  1152. will say

  1153. to not

  1154. my people

  1155. you are

  1156. my people

  1157. and he

  1158. shall say

  1159. you

  1160. are my

  1161. God

  1162. and so

  1163. you see

  1164. even in

  1165. the imagery

  1166. that was

  1167. given to

  1168. Hosea

  1169. of his

  1170. own

  1171. family

  1172. and the

  1173. misery

  1174. that there

  1175. was in

  1176. it

  1177. a scattered

  1178. people

  1179. a people

  1180. of no

  1181. mercy

  1182. a people

  1183. who are

  1184. not my

  1185. people

  1186. the Lord

  1187. says

  1188. he is able

  1189. to turn

  1190. it

  1191. he is able

  1192. from the

  1193. scattering

  1194. to bring

  1195. sowing

  1196. to bring

  1197. a harvest

  1198. he is able

  1199. to have

  1200. mercy

  1201. on no

  1202. mercy

  1203. he is able

  1204. to say

  1205. to you

  1206. are not

  1207. my people

  1208. you are

  1209. my people

  1210. and what

  1211. do the

  1212. people

  1213. say

  1214. you are

  1215. my God

  1216. so there

  1217. is hope

  1218. the people

  1219. who say

  1220. we will

  1221. have no

  1222. king

  1223. over us

  1224. we do

  1225. not fear

  1226. the Lord

  1227. there is

  1228. the hope

  1229. that they

  1230. will return

  1231. and say

  1232. you are

  1233. my God

  1234. so Hosea

  1235. breaks the

  1236. fallow ground

  1237. for it is

  1238. time

  1239. to seek

  1240. the Lord

  1241. and so

  1242. that as

  1243. we do

  1244. likewise

  1245. as we

  1246. seek

  1247. to proclaim

  1248. the good

  1249. news

  1250. of the

  1251. gospel

  1252. we do

  1253. so in

  1254. light of

  1255. that

  1256. it is

  1257. time

  1258. to seek

  1259. the Lord

  1260. the Lord

  1261. who is able

  1262. to bear

  1263. a great

  1264. harvest

  1265. the Lord

  1266. who is able

  1267. to show

  1268. mercy

  1269. and the Lord

  1270. who is able

  1271. to turn a

  1272. people who

  1273. are not

  1274. his people

  1275. into a

  1276. people

  1277. who are

  1278. his people

  1279. that they

  1280. would say

  1281. with one

  1282. voice

  1283. my Lord

  1284. and my

  1285. God

  1286. we have

  1287. difficult days

  1288. it's days

  1289. for dedication

  1290. and devotion

  1291. and it's a

  1292. day

  1293. that we will

  1294. see the

  1295. delight

  1296. as we see

  1297. God

  1298. working

  1299. there is

  1300. good news

  1301. for all

  1302. so we are

  1303. to keep

  1304. proclaiming

  1305. that good

  1306. news

  1307. in the

  1308. hope of

  1309. God

  1310. hearing

  1311. and answering

  1312. our prayers

  1313. well let us

  1314. pray

  1315. Lord our

  1316. gracious God

  1317. we do

  1318. thank you

  1319. for your

  1320. word that

  1321. fills us

  1322. with that

  1323. hope

  1324. that in

  1325. the midst

  1326. of the

  1327. heaviness

  1328. of tragedy

  1329. as that

  1330. commentator

  1331. put it

  1332. that we

  1333. see that

  1334. too

  1335. that it

  1336. was filled

  1337. and buoyant

  1338. with hope

  1339. and we

  1340. thank you

  1341. Lord

  1342. that that

  1343. encourages

  1344. in our

  1345. day too

  1346. that we

  1347. would see

  1348. a world

  1349. that is

  1350. so full

  1351. of tragedy

  1352. in so

  1353. many

  1354. different

  1355. ways

  1356. but yet

  1357. that we

  1358. would see

  1359. the hope

  1360. that there

  1361. is in

  1362. seeking

  1363. the Lord

  1364. we ask

  1365. Lord that

  1366. you will

  1367. bless us

  1368. in every

  1369. endeavour

  1370. to show

  1371. forth that

  1372. good news

  1373. to show

  1374. it to

  1375. all around

  1376. us

  1377. to be a

  1378. people who

  1379. do not

  1380. lose heart

  1381. in doing

  1382. so

  1383. even though

  1384. there are

  1385. difficulties

  1386. Lord

  1387. that we

  1388. would be

  1389. filled

  1390. with that

  1391. dedication

  1392. to you

  1393. and that we

  1394. would see

  1395. Lord

  1396. a delight

  1397. in you

  1398. that we

  1399. would see

  1400. a people

  1401. coming to

  1402. rejoice

  1403. in the hope

  1404. that there

  1405. is in

  1406. Jesus

  1407. so we

  1408. ask all

  1409. these things

  1410. Lord

  1411. confessing

  1412. our need

  1413. of you

  1414. confessing

  1415. our short

  1416. comings

  1417. and our

  1418. sins

  1419. but thankful

  1420. for the

  1421. one who

  1422. is on

  1423. our side

  1424. our Lord

  1425. and Saviour

  1426. Jesus Christ

  1427. as we pray

  1428. in his name

  1429. Amen
