  1. Well, we're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're going to sing in Psalm 1 in the Scottish Psalter.

  3. Psalm 1, page 200 of the psalm books.

  4. We're seeing the whole of this psalm.

  5. The tune is Amazing Grace.

  6. That man of perfect blessedness who walketh not astray

  7. in counsel of ungodly men nor stands in sinners' way.

  8. We'll sing the whole of this psalm to God's praise.

  9. That man of perfect blessedness who walketh not astray

  10. in counsel of ungodly men.

  11. Nor stands in sinners' way.

  12. Nor sits a thin the sorrows' chair,

  13. but grace and grace delight upon God's long and majesties.

  14. On heaven, all day and night.

  15. We shall be like a king that rose,

  16. near-founded by our river.

  17. And all he does shall prosper.

  18. And all he does shall prosper.

  19. We shall prosper.

  20. We shall prosper.

  21. We shall prosper.

  22. We shall prosper.

  23. We shall prosper.

  24. We shall prosper.

  25. We shall prosper.

  26. We shall prosper.

  27. We shall prosper.

  28. We shall prosper.

  29. I am not so, but like they are unto the child,

  30. which when I do am low, and God,

  31. and therefore shall not stand such as a God.

  32. I am not so, but like they are,

  33. and therefore shall not stand such as a God.

  34. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer. Let us pray.

  35. Amen.

  36. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you for this, your day.

  37. We thank you for the great privilege and joy it is to come and gather together in worship.

  38. Lord, we pray that you will bless us and watch over us today in all our different needs.

  39. We thank you for everyone who has come out here and also everyone who is tuning in as well.

  40. And wherever we are today, Lord, we pray that you will surround us with your grace,

  41. with your mercy, with your peace.

  42. We do thank you for all our young people here today.

  43. We thank you for our Sunday school, the creche, the tweenies, the Bible class.

  44. We thank you for the great encouragement that there is in seeing young people coming.

  45. And just together we will know your blessing on us.

  46. That as they learn today from your word of the wonderful way that you are able to help people.

  47. As we think of that passage that we'll be studying today about Bartimaeus,

  48. we thank you for the way that he cried out to you.

  49. A reminder to us all that that is what we need to do today as well.

  50. That we would call upon you and cry out,

  51. Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.

  52. And that you would help us to see you through every one of us, Lord.

  53. That we would come to see you and to know you more and more.

  54. And to love you with all our hearts and follow you all the days of our lives.

  55. So continue with us, watch over us, Lord.

  56. Hear our prayers and pardon us.

  57. And that's all we ask.

  58. We ask in Jesus' precious name.

  59. Amen.

  60. But before the young people,

  61. I just want to mention the passage that you're going to be looking at today

  62. in Sunday school and Bible class and tweenies.

  63. And it's a wonderful, it's actually one of my favorite passages

  64. about a man called Bartimaeus.

  65. And you're going to learn about him and how Jesus helped him today.

  66. And there's a number of different reasons why I love this story.

  67. Bartimaeus was someone who just was ignored by many people.

  68. And they looked at him and just thought he was just not to be spoken to even.

  69. They told him to be quiet.

  70. But Jesus was passing by.

  71. And that's what was important for him.

  72. He cried out as he heard that Jesus was passing by.

  73. He said, Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.

  74. And it's a reminder to us of what Jesus can do for all of us.

  75. But Jesus had a question for him.

  76. As he came to Jesus, Jesus asked him a question.

  77. And it's there in verse 51 of Mark 10.

  78. And it says, what do you want me to do for you?

  79. Jesus is asking, what do you want me to do for you?

  80. What would you say to that question if Jesus asked you?

  81. What do you want me to do for you?

  82. There might be many different things that come to mind.

  83. Maybe you're wanting something new.

  84. You want a new bike.

  85. You're saying to himself, Jesus, can you help me?

  86. Can you get me a new bike or just a new toy or a new friend?

  87. We might ask for many different things if Jesus gives us that question.

  88. But aren't there good things to ask?

  89. I want to ask for these things of Jesus in prayer.

  90. But that question is a special question.

  91. What do you want me to do for you?

  92. Because it's asking, what's the greatest thing I could do for you?

  93. And what's interesting about Bartimaeus is that just before Jesus met Bartimaeus,

  94. he'd actually asked this question of two of his disciples, James and John.

  95. They'd come to Jesus making demands.

  96. And Jesus had said, what do you want me to do for you?

  97. And that answer was, we want one of us to sit on your right and one on your left in glory.

  98. They were looking for something special, something special for themselves, glory for themselves.

  99. And Jesus said, that's not what's important.

  100. That's not what you should really be asking for.

  101. And what we learn then is as he comes to meet with Bartimaeus,

  102. Bartimaeus' reply is what is important.

  103. Jesus said to him, what do you want me to do for you?

  104. And Bartimaeus said, Rabbi, that's teacher.

  105. He said, let me recover my sight.

  106. Let me see.

  107. And that's the greatest thing we can ask Jesus for.

  108. Lord, Jesus, let me see you.

  109. Let me know you in that way.

  110. Let me love you with all my heart.

  111. So there's many things that we could ask of Jesus.

  112. If he was to ask us that question, what do you want me to do for you?

  113. But the greatest response we could give is what Bartimaeus says.

  114. Lord, let me see.

  115. Let me see you.

  116. And as he sees Jesus, what does he do?

  117. He follows him on the way.

  118. So today that that would be our cry to Jesus.

  119. Let us see.

  120. Let us see Jesus.

  121. We're going to say the Lord's Prayer together now.

  122. Amen.

  123. Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

  124. Thy kingdom come.

  125. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  126. Give us today our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  127. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  128. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.

  129. Amen.

  130. We're going to sing again to God's praise.

  131. And the young ones go out.

  132. During the singing through the door to my left here, we're going to sing in Psalm 25.

  133. In the sing-sign portion, page 29 of the psalm books.

  134. Psalm 25.

  135. We're going to sing from verse 9.

  136. Down to verse 9, and the tune is Herongate.

  137. And here, David in this psalm asks the Lord for help to direct him in all the ways that he should go.

  138. To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.

  139. I trust in you continually.

  140. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my foes gloat over me.

  141. We stand to sing verse 1 to 9 to God's praise.

  142. Amen.

  143. To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.

  144. I trust in you continually.

  145. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my foes gloat over me.

  146. No one who sends his hope in you will ever suffer such as grace.

  147. But those who act with treachery

  148. Your maliancy shame will face

  149. O Lord, be built to me your way

  150. And all your past and all things you know

  151. Thy elect and guide me in your truth

  152. And trust me in the way to go

  153. You are my Savior and my Lord

  154. All day I know in you alone

  155. Remember, Lord, your love and grace

  156. With strong passages you have shown

  157. Do not be of my sins of you

  158. For my rebellious evil ways

  159. Remember me in your grace

  160. For you, O Lord, are good always

  161. Because the Lord is just and true

  162. He shows His path to all who stray

  163. He guides the maiden waters wide

  164. And teachers, then His holy way

  165. We were getting a big wave from one of the wee boys going out there

  166. I wasn't sure, was it me he was waving at?

  167. Or was it his dad, Ali?

  168. But it made me smile as he was going out giving a big wave

  169. We're going to turn and read God's word together now

  170. We're going to read in Matthew

  171. The Gospel of Matthew, chapter 6

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  172. We're going to take up our reading at verse 19

  173. Reading down to the end of the chapter

  174. Matthew chapter 6 and at verse 19

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  175. You'll find it around page 978 of the church Bibles

  176. Matthew chapter 6

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  177. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth

  178. Where moth and rust destroy

  179. And where thieves break in and steal

  180. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven

  181. Where neither moth nor rust destroys

  182. And where thieves do not break in and steal

  183. But where your treasure is

  184. There your heart will be also

  185. The eye is the lamp of the body

  186. So if your eye is healthy

  187. Your whole body will be full of light

  188. If your eye is bad

  189. Your whole body will be full of darkness

  190. If then the light in you is darkness

  191. How great is the darkness

  192. No one can serve two masters

  193. For either he will hate the one and love the other

  194. Or he will be devoted to one and despise the other

  195. You cannot serve God and money

  196. Therefore I tell you

  197. Do not be anxious about your life

  198. What you will eat or what you will drink

  199. Nor about your body

  200. What you will put on

  201. Is not life more than food

  202. And the body more than clothing

  203. Look at the birds of the air

  204. They neither sow nor reap

  205. Nor gather into barns

  206. And yet your heavenly Father feeds them

  207. Are you not of more value than they

  208. And which of you by being anxious

  209. Can add a single hour to his span of life

  210. And why are you anxious about clothing

  211. Consider the lilies of the field

  212. How they grow

  213. They neither toil nor spin

  214. Yet I tell you

  215. Even Solomon in all his glory

  216. Was not arrayed like one of these

  217. But if God so clothes the grass of the field

  218. Which today is alive

  219. And tomorrow is thrown into the oven

  220. Will he not much more clothe you

  221. O you of little faith

  222. Therefore do not be anxious

  223. Saying what shall we eat

  224. Or what shall we drink

  225. Or what shall we wear

  226. For the Gentiles seek after all things

  227. And your heavenly Father knows

  228. That you need them all

  229. But seek first the kingdom of God

  230. And his righteousness

  231. And all these things will be added to you

  232. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow

  233. For tomorrow will be anxious for itself

  234. Sufficient for the day

  235. Is its own trouble

  236. Amen

  237. And may God bless that reading

  238. From his word

  239. Again just bow our heads

  240. In a word of prayer

  241. Let us pray

  242. Our gracious Father in heaven

  243. As we continue studying your word together this day

  244. We thank you for it

  245. We thank you for the truths it contains

  246. That it is not man's word

  247. But your word to man

  248. And we thank you that it speaks to everyone of us

  249. Young and old alike

  250. It reminds us of everything that we need to know for life

  251. And especially as we read in this passage together this morning

  252. We see Jesus' Sermon on the Mount

  253. Where he was preaching to a large crowd

  254. About the important things of life

  255. And so often it's the case that what we see as important

  256. As what we put our priorities in

  257. Is the secondary issues

  258. But Jesus here reminds us of what is of first importance

  259. And that is to seek first

  260. The kingdom of God

  261. To seek the Lord while he may be found

  262. To call upon him while he is near

  263. And that in so doing then

  264. We will see all other things added to us

  265. We would see things in a different order

  266. And with different eyes

  267. And see that you are what is the most precious thing of all

  268. You know as we think of Bartimaeus

  269. And how he cried out as Jesus passed by

  270. Jesus son of David have mercy on me

  271. His need was maybe food

  272. As he was blind and begging by the side of the road

  273. His greatest need was help though

  274. And Jesus showed him what he really needed help with

  275. And we thank you for the faith

  276. That made Bartimaeus well

  277. Your faith has made you well

  278. Jesus said to him

  279. And his sight was restored

  280. And he followed Jesus

  281. And so we pray

  282. That as we see what is important in life

  283. As we see what our priorities should be

  284. That you would open our eyes to see

  285. And to see Jesus

  286. And to follow him

  287. And we pray that you will bless your word to us

  288. As we study it together this morning

  289. As we look at the word before us

  290. Lord may you help us by your spirit

  291. To understand it

  292. To receive it

  293. To hear it

  294. And to do as it says

  295. To believe it with all our hearts

  296. And to recognize its ultimate authority

  297. Authority for life

  298. And for death

  299. And for eternity

  300. For all of these things that are before us

  301. For we are told in your word

  302. That there is a time to live

  303. And so a time to die

  304. And that is the reality

  305. That we all have to face up to

  306. In this world

  307. And yet we thank you

  308. That the gospel is still good news

  309. In a world that perishes

  310. To a people who are perished

  311. That the gospel is the great news

  312. That there is salvation in Jesus Christ

  313. And that he has come

  314. That we might have life

  315. And have it for all eternity

  316. Teach us

  317. Teach us through your word

  318. To number our days

  319. And to apply our minds to wisdom

  320. And to the wisdom of your word

  321. And your truth

  322. Help us then we pray

  323. And help us in our homes

  324. In our families

  325. In our congregation here

  326. Lord

  327. That you would look down upon us

  328. And help us

  329. Help those who are going through

  330. Difficult times

  331. Of ill health

  332. Infirmity

  333. Of uncertainty in life

  334. Even the anxieties

  335. That we have read of in this passage

  336. We can all have anxious hearts

  337. And yet we pray Lord

  338. That you will come

  339. And help us

  340. To be still in your presence

  341. To know

  342. That you are God

  343. And that you are there for us

  344. Help those who go through

  345. Times of grief

  346. We pray Lord

  347. That you will

  348. Bind up the broken hearts

  349. As your word says

  350. And that you will help us

  351. Even in our understanding

  352. Of certain things

  353. To still have faith in you

  354. As the one who does things

  355. Lord

  356. There are so many aspects of life

  357. That we find difficult and hard

  358. Answers that we do not have

  359. Answers that we feel so helpless

  360. Even to give to those

  361. Who ask these questions

  362. But Lord

  363. We thank you that

  364. Through wisdom

  365. Is found with you

  366. That the hidden things

  367. Belong to you

  368. And that we can leave them with you

  369. And that the day will come

  370. Lord

  371. When you unravel

  372. The pattern of our lives

  373. And explain to us

  374. The reasons why

  375. And that we can just

  376. In this time

  377. Lord

  378. Know

  379. That you are the one

  380. Who holds us

  381. You are the one

  382. Who keeps us

  383. So we pray Lord

  384. Blessing upon

  385. Your people

  386. And upon the word

  387. That goes out

  388. Even today

  389. Throughout

  390. Our communities here

  391. We thank you

  392. For our communion season

  393. And we pray

  394. For those who gather

  395. Around the Lord's table

  396. And the sacrament

  397. Of the Lord's supper

  398. We pray for the congregation

  399. In Nessus

  400. They meet

  401. We pray for them

  402. In North Harris

  403. In Scalpe

  404. We thank you

  405. For the preaching

  406. Of your word

  407. There today

  408. And pray that there

  409. Be a movement

  410. Of your spirit

  411. That there will be

  412. Rejoicing over

  413. Sinners being saved

  414. That there will be

  415. A fellowship of believers

  416. Gathered

  417. To encourage

  418. One another

  419. And build one another up

  420. We thank you Lord

  421. For these seasons

  422. Of refreshing

  423. And pray

  424. For the services

  425. In the week ahead

  426. As well

  427. God willing

  428. As we see

  429. The congregations

  430. That will gather

  431. Around your word

  432. As well

  433. Where ministers

  434. Will preach

  435. Where people

  436. Will gather

  437. We ask that your spirit

  438. Will be present

  439. In all of these days

  440. To bless

  441. And to show us

  442. Lord

  443. From heaven

  444. With your blessing

  445. So Lord

  446. Hear our prayers

  447. Continue with us

  448. As a people

  449. Continue with us

  450. In a world

  451. That seems so full

  452. Of chaos

  453. In so many different ways

  454. And so many

  455. Different parts

  456. Of the world

  457. With our troubles

  458. And fears

  459. And worries

  460. With our war

  461. With our natural disasters

  462. With so many things

  463. Going on Lord

  464. Beyond our control

  465. But we thank you

  466. That the world

  467. Belongs to the Lord

  468. And all

  469. That it contains

  470. That everything

  471. Is yours

  472. And Lord

  473. We pray

  474. That you'll remember us

  475. And that you'll have

  476. Continue with us

  477. Throughout the day

  478. Refresh us

  479. In our worship

  480. And also in our rest

  481. And our time

  482. Out from the usual

  483. Activities of the week

  484. Lord

  485. That you'll refresh us

  486. In body

  487. Mind

  488. And soul

  489. Hear our prayers

  490. And as we come

  491. We confess our sins

  492. Anew

  493. Seeking mercy

  494. And forgiveness

  495. That's all we ask

  496. We ask in Jesus

  497. Precious name

  498. Amen

  499. Before we turn back

  500. To look at

  501. This passage in Matthew

  502. We're going to sing again

  503. In Psalm 125

  504. Psalm 125

  505. Page 419

  506. We sing the whole of this psalm

  507. The tune is Huddersfield

  508. Then the Lord

  509. That firmly thrust

  510. Shall be like Sion Hill

  511. Which at no time

  512. Can be removed

  513. But standeth ever still

  514. We sing the whole of this psalm

  515. To God's praise

  516. Amen

  517. In the Lord

  518. That firmly must

  519. Shall be like Sion Hill

  520. Which at no time

  521. Can be removed

  522. What standeth ever still

  523. At found upon Jerusalem

  524. The mountain

  525. Stand away

  526. That voyque

  527. Let's walk upon the Lord, for just men shall not die, lest righteous men stretch forth their hearts unto their liquidy.

  528. Do bow to all those that be good, I will my sword impart, and do our good to those that have a pride.

  529. And within their hearts, but as for such a star night,

  530. a light of love and truth that we all shall lead forth with wicked men, all is shall we shall see.

  531. Amen.

  532. That word's a word that maybe you use often or you hear often being used.

  533. There's so much talk about change in our world and in our lives.

  534. Every day we hear something about it because nothing stands still.

  535. There's always change.

  536. But is change something that scares you or is it something that you see a need of?

  537. Is it something that scares you or is it something that you see a need of?

  538. It depends how we're looking at it, of course.

  539. There are many things that we want to keep as they are.

  540. But there are other things that we want to change and it depends just what we're looking at.

  541. And as we look at the gospel, we're always thinking about the gospel as a gospel that never changes.

  542. It's the same word today, yesterday, forever.

  543. It's the same word.

  544. The word doesn't change.

  545. And yet the gospel itself is all about change because it's a gospel with a power to change us, to bring us from darkness to light.

  546. And so it does depend how we're looking at that word, change.

  547. And as Jesus preaches here in Matthew 6, the Sermon on the Mount, as it's so often called,

  548. is Jesus preaching to a crowd who he longs that they would be changed.

  549. Changed in a sense of growing in their knowledge and understanding of who he is and what their greatest need in life is.

  550. And as we look at our lives ourselves, as we look at our own days, and as we look at our days, our weeks, our months, our years,

  551. as it quickly passes by, there are so often many things that we see change.

  552. Things that we see change in ourselves or things that we would like to see change around us.

  553. As we think of the world in which we live in today, we want to see change.

  554. We want to see change in so many different ways.

  555. Where there's war, we want that changed to peace.

  556. Where there's people who are hungry and thirsty, suffering, we want to see them fed.

  557. Where there's natural disasters that have caused terrible devastation, we want to see change and things rebuilt.

  558. We look around us and we see that there's so much need for change.

  559. We see it in lives around us, of individual lives or our own lives,

  560. where we want to see change in terms of things being better for people.

  561. Whether it's health, we want to see change.

  562. Whether it's financial insecurity or loss of jobs, we want to see change so that people are more secure in so many different ways.

  563. There's things that we want in our own lives to change too, I'm sure.

  564. As we look at ourselves, we want things to change for us, for the better.

  565. We often learn through experience in life that often the way that we see change coming about or the plans that we make for ourselves,

  566. we are vulnerable to change.

  567. And that's why it's important that we hear what Jesus is saying to us here.

  568. And we apply our hearts to wisdom.

  569. As one of the Psalms says, the wisdom of which Jesus is teaching us here.

  570. about is it their own plans that are important or is it the Lord's plans?

  571. In the book of Proverbs, chapter 16, verse 9, there we see wisdom.

    Proverbs 16:9

  572. The heart of man plans his ways, it says.

  573. Our own hearts, we make our plans.

  574. We have our desired plans that we might think about.

  575. This is the change that needs to happen in my life.

  576. But it goes on to say, but the Lord establishes his steps.

  577. It's not just change in ourselves that we want ourselves,

  578. but what does the Lord want for you, what does the Lord want for me?

  579. What are our priorities in life?

  580. So as we look at our lives, we have a sense of a need of change

  581. in so many different ways of putting our house in order, if you like.

  582. And we can often view it as a kind of setting priority and goals in life,

  583. but I wanted to look at it today under a kind of DIY project.

  584. A DIY project.

  585. But in the sense of asking, is it a do-it-yourself plan?

  586. Is it something you're going to sort out all by yourself?

  587. A DIY project.

  588. Or is it going to be a DIY disaster?

  589. In trying to do it yourself, it's only going to end in disaster.

  590. And where does the Lord fit into all these plans?

  591. We often have DIY projects on the go.

  592. I'm sure many of us like to tinker with little projects.

  593. Perhaps it's around the house.

  594. You go through the winter months and it's maybe an inside project.

  595. Painting and decorating a room.

  596. Making some changes inside.

  597. Or as the spring comes, as the days get longer, the weather gets better.

  598. It's the outside jobs.

  599. You want to change things.

  600. Improve things.

  601. But how do they turn out?

  602. Are you good at DIY?

  603. Or have you ever had a DIY disaster?

  604. Have you ever been working on a project where I just have lost my way?

  605. I just don't know what I'm doing here.

  606. It's time to call in the experts.

  607. There's a program on television called DIY SOS.

  608. And it used to be more so in the past.

  609. There would be programs about people who have started DIY projects.

  610. It's all gone wrong for them.

  611. And they have to call in this DIY SOS team who come in to put things right.

  612. Or people who have looked at projects and they're just too big.

  613. And the DIY SOS come in to help them through it.

  614. Well, as you see in this passage in Matthew 6,

  615. it's very much Jesus speaking to a people who have their own DIY plans.

  616. We're going to do it this way.

  617. We're going to live our lives in this way.

  618. We're going to find our way through life, through death, into eternity.

  619. We're going to do it all by ourselves.

  620. It's a DIY project.

  621. But Jesus so often shows us that doing it by ourselves is only going to end in disaster.

  622. And instead that we are to see, as he is teaching here,

  623. that it's first to put him as the first priority in our lives.

  624. That he is the one who has come to right our DIY disaster.

  625. That we cannot save ourselves.

  626. And this is closely connected to what we've been looking at in our Wednesday Bible studies.

  627. Looking at the truths of the Reformation.

  628. That we cannot save ourselves by our own works.

  629. It's not a project we try and do ourselves.

  630. By his word alone.

  631. By grace alone.

  632. Through faith alone.

  633. It's all of these things.

  634. Because if we do it apart from him, it ends in disaster.

  635. So as you look at your own life today.

  636. As you look at your past.

  637. As you look at your present.

  638. As you even look to the future.

  639. Ask yourself, is my house in order?

  640. Is my life, my project, this is a DIY project.

  641. I'm going to do it all myself.

  642. Or are you living, looking to the Lord and his help?

  643. But we see in this passage.

  644. An SOS.

  645. The way the Lord comes to his people.

  646. And we're going to look at it under that three heads.

  647. That SOS.

  648. And the first thing is savings.

  649. And the second thing is observations.

  650. And then the third thing is security.

  651. Three things that make up SOS.

  652. By savings, observations, and security.

  653. And Jesus begins in the verses that we read by speaking about savings.

  654. In the beginning of the chapter, in the previous verses, he's spoken about the Lord's prayer.

  655. He's taught them how to pray.

  656. And he's talked about fasting.

  657. And from there, he moves on to possessions.

  658. To money.

  659. To savings.

  660. And in many ways, it can seem like just a random jump.

  661. Just going from one random thing to another throughout the Sermon on the Mount.

  662. But it's actually, it's tying everything together.

  663. It's tying our lives together in how we look at things.

  664. If our focus is right towards God.

  665. So we think of prayer and fasting.

  666. That was important to the people.

  667. If we get these things in order and get these things right.

  668. Well then, there's a better chance of everything else flowing from rightly from that.

  669. So that when he comes down to verse 33.

  670. And he's sort of summarizing it there.

  671. Seek for the kingdom of God.

  672. It's taking us right back to prayer and fasting.

  673. It's taking us back to putting things in that right order.

  674. Because from there, everything falls into place.

  675. If our focus is right towards God and towards Christ, then other things have a right focus too.

  676. Because you see in verse 24, he makes that point follows.

  677. He says,

  678. No one can serve two masters.

  679. You cannot have these two as your master.

  680. You cannot serve God and money.

  681. Who is your master?

  682. That's what he's saying here.

  683. So the first thing he speaks about here is savings.

  684. And when you think of a DIY project, it's always going to need funding.

  685. It's going to need input.

  686. It's going to need money to make that project become a reality.

  687. Jesus is saying here is, let's get that right as well.

  688. And what he says then is in verse 19, verse 20.

  689. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth,

  690. where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.

  691. But lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven,

  692. where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

  693. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  694. So it's about not having this divided loyalty.

  695. Trying to serve God and money.

  696. No, where is your treasure?

  697. What is important in your life?

  698. Is it God or is it money?

  699. You cannot serve both.

  700. And much of what we invest in putting into our homes,

  701. into our lives in this world,

  702. is good in so many ways.

  703. It's important.

  704. But what Jesus reminds us of,

  705. if that is all the treasure that you're laying up,

  706. then it's worthless because it's going to be destroyed.

  707. The moth is going to eat it.

  708. The rust is going to destroy it.

  709. The thieves are going to break in and steal it.

  710. It's vulnerable.

  711. And that's what our lives are if that's what our focus is on.

  712. Our lives are vulnerable.

  713. But he says instead,

  714. lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven

  715. where nothing can touch it,

  716. nothing can destroy it,

  717. nothing can steal it.

  718. You know, we can live our lives with ourselves as our priority,

  719. our own DIY project,

  720. where I'm going to enjoy my life.

  721. I'm going to make the money.

  722. I'm going to buy my car.

  723. I'm going to do all of these things.

  724. But ultimately, it's worthless.

  725. It'll rust.

  726. It'll fade away.

  727. We can do all of these projects,

  728. and yet we have nothing at the end of the day.

  729. So where are you to invest?

  730. Where are you to invest in me?

  731. Your security is in me.

  732. Your works, you're living your life in this way.

  733. It's not going to help you eternally.

  734. Christ alone is the only way to salvation.

  735. Christ alone is the only way to save up for an eternity that is before all.

  736. So we look to Jesus.

  737. We see what his preaching is here.

  738. Lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven.

  739. How do we do this?

  740. Well, it's not in him.

  741. Because Jesus has a building project going on us.

  742. That he is preparing for his people.

  743. A place in glory.

  744. In John 14, verse 2 and 3, it says,

    John 14:2

  745. He has a project.

  746. He has a project.

  747. He has a better place for us all.

  748. That he has prepared by going to the cross for us,

  749. and is even preparing for us now.

  750. That, as he goes on to say,

  751. If I go and prepare a place for you,

  752. I will come again and will take you to myself.

  753. That where I am, you may be also.

  754. A place that is secure and a security for his people.

  755. So what's your saving plan for getting your house in order?

  756. Is it a DIY job?

  757. You're trying to do it yourself.

  758. It will only end in disaster.

  759. The only security, the only saving plan you need

  760. is that finished work of Christ.

  761. Christ has done it.

  762. It's finished, he said, on the cross.

  763. And he has gone to prepare a place for his people.

  764. So it's about our treasure in heaven.

  765. That that is what we're to look to.

  766. So we have our savings plan.

  767. When we see our observations,

  768. observations, if you're looking at DIY projects,

  769. it's because you're observing, you're seeing,

  770. that there is a need, that there's a project

  771. that needs your attention.

  772. And as Jesus goes on here,

  773. he speaks about how we look around us

  774. and how we see our lives

  775. and how much anxiety it brings to us.

  776. And in verse 25, he starts to say,

  777. therefore, I tell you,

  778. do not be anxious about your life,

  779. what you will eat or what you will drink,

  780. not about your body,

  781. what you will put on.

  782. And he's saying this for a reason.

  783. He's saying this because

  784. that is what people are troubled by,

  785. that these are big issues

  786. in our lives then

  787. and as they are now in our day as well.

  788. We are afraid.

  789. We're anxious about so many different things.

  790. Jesus speaks about anxiety here,

  791. not in a way of saying,

  792. just pull yourself together.

  793. Come on, get on with your life.

  794. But he does it in a way

  795. where he's teaching us,

  796. where he's teaching us what's important,

  797. where he's teaching us that

  798. he knows about our anxieties.

  799. He knows the worries and the fears

  800. that we have.

  801. And life often makes us think about

  802. these things,

  803. the things that he speaks about,

  804. whether it's food or clothing,

  805. you know, what our health,

  806. all these different things

  807. that make us anxious,

  808. all these different things that, again,

  809. we can so often make a priority for ourselves.

  810. But ultimately he's saying,

  811. look at these things,

  812. observe these things,

  813. and put in it all,

  814. see how quickly your life is passing by

  815. and that these are not your priorities either.

  816. What does he say in verse 27?

  817. Each of you, by being anxious,

  818. can add a single hour to his span of life.

  819. Our lives go past.

  820. A new year comes,

  821. and here we are already into March 2025.

  822. We think about how a birthday comes,

  823. another milestone arrives,

  824. or a major event comes in our lives.

  825. They make us think about the passing of time.

  826. So often, all the time,

  827. we're reminded of the years going past

  828. and how uncertain our time span here is.

  829. We observe all of these things.

  830. We see it all around us,

  831. whether it's locally, nationally,

  832. or internationally.

  833. How quick circumstances are we?

  834. How quickly our lives go by.

  835. We've observed it.

  836. Even just looking back over these last few years,

  837. it's just about five years now

  838. since the pandemic came.

  839. Our lives were turned upside down.

  840. We've not really recovered fully from it

  841. in so many different ways.

  842. Things that we could never see coming,

  843. and yet all of a sudden,

  844. it turned our lives upside down.

  845. And we've seen natural disasters.

  846. We've seen wars.

  847. We've seen it going on all the time.

  848. And these things.

  849. Think.

  850. Think even for ourselves,

  851. as we look at our lives,

  852. lives but a breath

  853. and an eternity before us.

  854. We cannot add a single hour

  855. to the span of our life

  856. by just being anxious

  857. about all of these things.

  858. There has to be more.

  859. And what does it say to us?

  860. Well, it's teaching us

  861. that the priority

  862. is not about food

  863. and the body

  864. and clothing

  865. and all of these things.

  866. The priority is

  867. seek first

  868. the kingdom of God.

  869. Seek first

  870. the kingdom of God

  871. that we observe

  872. all these things

  873. in light of eternity,

  874. and we seek first

  875. the kingdom of God

  876. because that

  877. is what is important.

  878. You can chase after

  879. these things

  880. all your days.

  881. You can be anxious

  882. about your clothing,

  883. your food,

  884. all of these things.

  885. And there's a time

  886. that we are

  887. afraid and anxious

  888. but we come to God

  889. with it.

  890. That's the key.

  891. We observe

  892. and we come to God

  893. and seek

  894. his kingdom.

  895. And he says

  896. then all these

  897. other things

  898. will be added to you.

  899. They will fall

  900. into place

  901. for you.

  902. Not in the sense

  903. where we'll be

  904. millionaires

  905. or anything like that.

  906. There may be still

  907. times when we're hungry

  908. and we don't have money

  909. but yet we have

  910. that assurance

  911. in God

  912. that the grace

  913. of God

  914. is with us.

  915. The comedy show

  916. Only Fools and Horses

  917. I'm sure many of you

  918. have seen it

  919. over the years

  920. and it's that story

  921. of two brothers

  922. who are always

  923. searching after that goal.

  924. This time next year

  925. we're going to be

  926. millionaires.

  927. That's what they're

  928. always looking at.

  929. They're dealing with

  930. all kinds of

  931. different deals

  932. and items

  933. and trying to sell

  934. and all of these things.

  935. Delboy and Rodney

  936. they're going to be

  937. millionaires next year.

  938. And then the day comes

  939. where they find

  940. a watch

  941. in their garage

  942. what they think

  943. is just something

  944. worthless.

  945. It turns out to be

  946. what changes

  947. their lives

  948. that's worth millions.

  949. And all of a sudden

  950. they are millionaires.

  951. But what happens

  952. at the end

  953. of one of the episodes

  954. that's then changed

  955. is to

  956. say this time next year

  957. we're going to be millionaires.

  958. Rodney,

  959. this time next year

  960. we're going to be

  961. billionaires.

  962. There's always

  963. this searching

  964. after more.

  965. And that's the sad

  966. truth in this world

  967. where it's never

  968. enough.

  969. we're always

  970. wanting more.

  971. But as we observe

  972. life today

  973. is that our goal?

  974. That we want

  975. more of this world?

  976. More of what the world

  977. gives us

  978. as happiness?

  979. No,

  980. it's about seeking

  981. first

  982. the kingdom

  983. of God.

  984. Observe these things

  985. and see them

  986. in light of

  987. eternity

  988. where they're

  989. worthless

  990. compared to the

  991. riches

  992. of knowing

  993. Jesus

  994. as Lord.

  995. By his grace

  996. alone

  997. we are saved.

  998. The grace of God

  999. that rescues us

  1000. from a

  1001. DIY disaster

  1002. of doing it

  1003. ourselves

  1004. to instead

  1005. being relying

  1006. on the grace

  1007. of God

  1008. for our salvation.

  1009. And that leads us

  1010. to the last thing

1011. I want us to see here.

  1012. we've had savings

  1013. we've had observations

  1014. and the last thing

  1015. S

  1016. is security.

  1017. Security.

  1018. When you're looking

  1019. at a project

  1020. a DIY project

  1021. what's the reason

  1022. for it?

  1023. It's something

  1024. that makes us

  1025. feel more secure

  1026. in life.

  1027. Maybe something

  1028. that's needed

  1029. repaired

  1030. or needed doing

  1031. for our own safety.

  1032. Maybe your car

  1033. is getting

  1034. to an old age

  1035. and you want

  1036. a newer one

  1037. to be safer.

  1038. Maybe your house

  1039. is needing

  1040. new windows

  1041. so you put them

  1042. in in order

  1043. to be warmer.

  1044. All these things

  1045. are just about

  1046. our own personal

  1047. kind of security.

  1048. But what Jesus

  1049. gets at here

  1050. ultimately

  1051. is our security

  1052. in him.

  1053. The foundation

  1054. on which

  1055. we're building.

  1056. And that's what

  1057. he comes to

  1058. as you read on

  1059. down through

1060. this Sermon on the Mount.

  1061. We looked at it

  1062. actually at the end

  1063. we looked at it

  1064. in the Gospel

  1065. of Luke

  1066. but it comes

  1067. to the same

  1068. conclusion here

  1069. in Matthew 7.

  1070. The security

  1071. of the two

  1072. different houses

  1073. being built.

  1074. One being built

  1075. upon the sand

  1076. and one being built

  1077. upon the rock.

  1078. Everyone who hears

  1079. these words

  1080. of mine

  1081. and does them

  1082. will be like

  1083. the wise man

  1084. who built his house

  1085. on the rock.

  1086. That's at the end

  1087. of this sermon

  1088. in Matthew 7.24.

  1089. We looked at it

1090. just a few weeks ago.

  1091. The wise man

  1092. built his house

  1093. on the rock

  1094. who hears

  1095. these words

  1096. of mine

  1097. and does them.

  1098. So think back

  1099. two weeks ago.

  1100. You heard

  1101. these words

  1102. in the Gospel

  1103. of Luke.

  1104. You heard

  1105. these words

  1106. and you heard

  1107. them before.

  1108. Are you wise?

  1109. Are you building

  1110. on the rock?

  1111. You heard them

  1112. two weeks ago

1113. but did you do them?

  1114. Did you do

  1115. these words?

  1116. Are you building

  1117. your house

  1118. on the rock

  1119. that is Christ?

  1120. We listen

  1121. to his word.

  1122. We hear it

1123. but do we do it?

  1124. Jesus is here

  1125. speaking to us

  1126. again.

  1127. Speaking about

  1128. what is important

  1129. in life

  1130. what our priorities

  1131. are.

  1132. Are we doing it

  1133. ourselves

  1134. or are we

  1135. listening

  1136. to him?

  1137. Two things

  1138. to say

  1139. in conclusion.

  1140. The first thing

  1141. is

  1142. God doesn't

  1143. give us

  1144. everything we want

  1145. and for that

  1146. we should be

  1147. glad

1148. because if he gave us

  1149. everything we wanted

  1150. where would we be?

  1151. We would ask

  1152. for the wrong

  1153. things.

  1154. There was a note

  1155. that had been

  1156. written by

  1157. a confederate

  1158. soldier during

  1159. the civil war

  1160. and he wrote

  1161. these words.

  1162. He said

  1163. I asked God

  1164. for strength

  1165. that I might

  1166. achieve.

  1167. I was made

  1168. weak that I

  1169. might learn

  1170. humbly

  1171. to obey.

  1172. I asked

  1173. God for

  1174. health

  1175. that I

  1176. might do

  1177. greater

  1178. things.

  1179. I was given

  1180. infirmity

  1181. that I

  1182. might do

  1183. better

  1184. things.

  1185. I asked

  1186. for riches

  1187. that I

  1188. might be

  1189. happy.

  1190. I was given

  1191. poverty

  1192. that I

  1193. might be

  1194. wise.

  1195. I asked

  1196. for power

  1197. that I

  1198. might have

  1199. the praise

  1200. of men.

  1201. I was given

  1202. weakness

  1203. that I

  1204. feel the

  1205. need of

  1206. God.

  1207. I asked

  1208. for all

  1209. things

  1210. that I

  1211. might enjoy

  1212. life.

  1213. I was given

  1214. life

  1215. that I

  1216. might enjoy

  1217. all things.

  1218. I got

  1219. nothing

  1220. that I

  1221. asked for

  1222. but everything

  1223. I had

  1224. hoped for.

  1225. He didn't

  1226. get what he

  1227. asked

  1228. but he

  1229. realized

  1230. there was

  1231. everything

  1232. that he

  1233. needed.

  1234. It was

  1235. those words

  1236. I asked

  1237. for

  1238. things

  1239. that I

  1240. might enjoy

  1241. life.

  1242. That's the

  1243. natural

  1244. conclusion

  1245. that we

  1246. might come

  1247. to.

  1248. Give me

  1249. all these

  1250. things

  1251. that I

  1252. might enjoy

  1253. life.

  1254. But the

  1255. right way

  1256. of looking

  1257. at it

  1258. was I

  1259. was given

  1260. life

  1261. that I

  1262. might enjoy

  1263. all things.

  1264. And that's

  1265. really what

  1266. Jesus is

  1267. saying here.

  1268. It's not

  1269. about getting

  1270. all these

  1271. things that

  1272. we might

  1273. enjoy life

  1274. but that

  1275. finding that

  1276. life is

  1277. in him

  1278. that we

  1279. might enjoy

  1280. all things.

  1281. Seek

  1282. first

  1283. the kingdom

  1284. of God.

  1285. God

  1286. doesn't

  1287. always give

  1288. us what

  1289. we want

  1290. but he

  1291. does

  1292. certainly

  1293. give us

  1294. everything

  1295. that we

  1296. need.

  1297. He has

  1298. given us

  1299. everything

  1300. that we

  1301. need

  1302. that we

  1303. should

  1304. rejoice

  1305. in him

  1306. and it

  1307. never has

  1308. been more

  1309. true in

  1310. our security

  1311. that we

  1312. think of

  1313. all that

  1314. he has

  1315. given to

  1316. us

  1317. in Christ.

  1318. We have

  1319. had a

  1320. DIY

  1321. disaster.

  1322. We have

  1323. tried to

  1324. do it

  1325. ourselves

  1326. and that

  1327. has led

  1328. to sin

  1329. in our

  1330. life.

  1331. A DIY

  1332. disaster is

  1333. sin in

  1334. our life.

  1335. We could

  1336. never

  1337. sort it

  1338. but the

  1339. SOS

  1340. went out

  1341. and he

  1342. came to

  1343. save us

  1344. from our

  1345. sin.

  1346. He paid

  1347. the price

  1348. and therefore

  1349. as we seek

  1350. to put our

  1351. house in

  1352. order

  1353. as we

  1354. seek to

  1355. find the

  1356. way to

  1357. enjoy life.

  1358. How is

  1359. it going

  1360. to be?

  1361. Is it

  1362. going to

  1363. be in

  1364. your own

  1365. DIY

  1366. project?

  1367. Do it

  1368. yourself?

  1369. Or is it

  1370. to come

  1371. back and

  1372. see that

  1373. will end

  1374. in disaster

  1375. and instead

  1376. trust in

  1377. the Lord

  1378. Jesus?

  1379. Faith

  1380. alone is

  1381. the way

  1382. to live.

  1383. I asked

  1384. for all

  1385. things that

  1386. I might

  1387. enjoy life.

  1388. That's not

  1389. the way.

  1390. But Jesus

  1391. will give you

  1392. life that

  1393. you may

  1394. enjoy all

  1395. things.

  1396. May you

  1397. find that

  1398. life in

  1399. him.

  1400. Let us

  1401. pray.

  1402. Our

  1403. gracious and

  1404. eternal God,

  1405. we thank you

  1406. for your

  1407. wisdom that's

  1408. above ours,

  1409. that you do

  1410. not give us

  1411. all that we

  1412. want, but

  1413. you do give

  1414. all that we

  1415. need.

  1416. And we

  1417. thank you

  1418. for every

  1419. good and

  1420. perfect gift

  1421. that you

  1422. have given,

  1423. all that

  1424. comes from

  1425. your hand.

  1426. We thank

  1427. you for

  1428. your word.

  1429. We thank

  1430. you for

  1431. your spirit.

  1432. We thank

  1433. you for

  1434. your son.

  1435. And we

  1436. thank you

  1437. for the

  1438. salvation

  1439. that has

  1440. been bought

  1441. for us.

  1442. We thank

  1443. you for

  1444. faith and

  1445. hope.

  1446. We thank

  1447. you for

  1448. grace.

  1449. We thank

  1450. you for

  1451. us so

  1452. liberally.

  1453. And we

  1454. pray,

  1455. Lord,

  1456. that we

  1457. will see

  1458. that life

  1459. in you

  1460. is to

  1461. be able

  1462. to enjoy

  1463. all things.

  1464. So teach

  1465. us, Lord,

  1466. that we

  1467. would seek

  1468. first the

  1469. kingdom of

  1470. God.

  1471. So we

  1472. ask it in

  1473. Jesus'

  1474. name.

  1475. Amen.

  1476. We're

  1477. going to

  1478. conclude by

  1479. singing to

  1480. God's

  1481. praise in

  1482. Psalm 127

  1483. in the

  1484. Sing

  1485. Psalms.

  1486. Page

  1487. 171.

  1488. We'll

  1489. sing

  1490. first two

  1491. verses,

  1492. verse 1

  1493. and 2.

  1494. Reminder to

  1495. us that

  1496. we don't

  1497. build our

  1498. own house

  1499. in that

  1500. security.

  1501. Unless the

  1502. Lord builds

  1503. the house,

  1504. its builders

  1505. toil in vain.

  1506. Unless he

  1507. keeps the

  1508. city safe,

  1509. they vainly

  1510. watch,

  1511. maintain.

  1512. We're going

  1513. to sing

  1514. verse 1

  1515. and 2

  1516. in the

  1517. tune as

  1518. Covenanters.

  1519. We sing

  1520. to God's

  1521. praise.

  1522. voy voy

  1523. voy

  1524. What maintain

  1525. They

  1526. Vainly

  1527. What maintain

  1528. They

  1529. Vainly

  1530. What maintain

  1531. Unless

  1532. He keeps

  1533. Selties

  1534. They

  1535. Vainly

  1536. What maintain

  1537. When you rise

  1538. Before the dawn

  1539. And lay

  1540. Our shady

  1541. Keep

  1542. That you may

  1543. Toil for

  1544. Food to me

  1545. He gives

  1546. Selt

  1547. One

  1548. Sleeve

  1549. He gives

  1550. Selt

  1551. One

  1552. Sleeve

  1553. That you

  1554. Toil for

  1555. Food to me

  1556. He gives

  1557. One

  1558. Sleeve

  1559. After the benediction

1560. I'll go to the main door.

1561. Now may grace, mercy and peace

  1562. From God, Father, Son

1563. And Holy Spirit rest upon

1564. And abide with you all

  1565. Now and forevermore. Amen.
