  19. Let's come to God in prayer.

  20. Let us pray.

  21. Lord, our gracious God, as we have been singing these words,

  22. we are reminded of every reason that we have to give thanks to you.

  23. We are reminded of all that you have done for us,

  24. all that you are doing for us,

  25. and indeed all that you will do for us.

  26. For you are a God of salvation,

  27. one who we can exalt, for you have rescued us.

  28. When you bring us from darkness to light,

  29. we know that that great work has been done,

  30. that you have rescued us from the dominion of darkness

  31. and brought us into that kingdom of light.

  32. And so as we know you, Lord, and as we put our trust in you,

  33. we thank you that that is our cry to you,

  34. that we exalt your name,

  35. that we praise you for all that you have done,

  36. that you have heard our cry,

  37. and that you have listened to us in our cries for mercy,

  38. and that you have been gracious towards us.

  39. And so we thank you for everyone here

  40. who can testify to these words this evening,

  41. for everyone who knows what it has been

  42. and even is at this time to cry unto you

  43. and to know that you are a God

  44. who is mighty and awesome in power,

  45. the one who is above all rule and authority of this world,

  46. the one who has power in the heavens high,

  47. and yet who looks down upon us so graciously in so many ways.

  48. But you have not dealt with us as we deserve, oh Lord,

  49. but that you have been merciful to us

  50. and even patient and compassionate.

  51. You have, oh Lord, not given us what we deserve,

  52. but yet you remember us.

  53. And we thank you that your favour is upon us still,

  54. and that we know a day of grace and mercy.

  55. But in that we know too that other days come,

  56. and a final day will come,

  57. when a day of judgment will be upon us.

  58. And we know, Lord, that it is what we hear now

  59. and what we do in these days

  60. that's so important for us.

  61. And so we pray for maybe any who haven't listened

  62. to your voice as yet,

  63. for any who have not cried out for mercy as yet.

  64. That this evening, Lord,

  65. we would realise the great privilege that we have in prayer,

  66. the blessing that is ours to be able to call upon you

  67. as one who hears and answers according to your will.

  68. We do thank you, Lord,

  69. for the blessing that prayer is to us as a people.

  70. We are surrounded by prayer,

  71. and we thank you for that.

  72. But we pray, Lord, that we will see prayer far and wide

  73. throughout our nation and throughout the world.

  74. We do thank you that you have your people

  75. to all ends of the earth.

  76. But we remember those in particular who rule over us,

  77. and we thank you for them, Lord,

  78. and we pray for kings and queens throughout the world.

  79. We pray for presidents and prime ministers.

  80. We pray for those who have that sense of authority and power,

  81. and yet, oh Lord,

  82. not recognising that it comes from you,

  83. not depending upon you in prayer,

  84. but seeking to do things according to their own ways

  85. and their own wisdom.

  86. We pray, Lord,

  87. that you will humble,

  88. that you will humble them under your mighty hand,

  89. and that they would come to recognise

  90. that all authority and power is from you,

  91. and that they would cry out to you,

  92. that they would call upon your name,

  93. even for mercy for themselves

  94. and for all our nations of the world,

  95. that we would be a people

  96. who would see our great need for you.

  97. And we thank you, Lord,

  98. that as we call,

  99. that you are able to show us your ways

  100. and to teach us your paths,

  101. just as you have done through all the generations.

  102. When we see even the psalmist,

  103. as he cries out,

  104. Lord, he knew direction.

  105. When we see your people

  106. throughout the Old Testament

  107. in times of great need and anxiety and fear,

  108. yet being able to call upon you

  109. and to know that you are with them.

  110. When we think of the Gospels,

  111. when we think of Jesus in them,

  112. as he taught his disciples how to pray,

  113. and even as we repeat that prayer

  114. so often here, the Lord's Prayer,

  115. we thank you for its simplicity

  116. and yet its depth.

  117. We thank you that it teaches us

  118. about our relationship with you,

  119. that you are our Father in heaven,

  120. and that we depend on you for all things,

  121. that with you is forgiveness,

  122. that with you is all that we need

  123. for life and for eternity.

  124. And so we thank you for the teaching

  125. we have in prayer.

  126. We thank you for the way

  127. we see prayer answered,

  128. even as the disciples

  129. and Paul on his missionary journeys

  130. as they went out with the Gospel.

  131. We thank you for the way

  132. that you brought them through

  133. so many different places

  134. and among so many different people

  135. by the power of prayer

  136. and the movement of your Spirit.

  137. And we thank you that today

  138. we still have that power,

  139. we still have that access to you

  140. and through your Holy Spirit

  141. that we are guided in all that we do.

  142. And so we pray, Lord,

  143. teach us to pray

  144. and to look to you

  145. and to wait upon you.

  146. Remember us in our homes

  147. and our families,

  148. we pray, Lord,

  149. that you would have mercy upon us.

  150. We thank you that

  151. even as we pray together this evening,

  152. we all have our individual prayers

  153. being offered up to you as well.

  154. The things that go on

  155. in our own lives

  156. and experiences

  157. that maybe we only know ourselves.

  158. We thank you that

  159. they are already revealed to you

  160. and that you are with us

  161. in every situation.

  162. And we do thank you, Lord,

  163. that your peace and blessing

  164. is over us in these ways

  165. that we know that

  166. you have blessed us so much

  167. with the Gospel,

  168. with the peace that we enjoy,

  169. with the way of life that we have.

  170. Lord, we have so much

  171. to be thankful for

  172. and yet we take so much for granted.

  173. And we just pray, Lord,

  174. that you would just come

  175. in a day of your power.

  176. Come and restore to us

  177. days of great blessing,

  178. days of revival,

  179. days of your Spirit

  180. working powerfully in our midst.

  181. We pray that for our churches

  182. throughout our island.

  183. We pray it to know it

  184. in the preaching of the Gospel

  185. in these days

  186. and times of communion season,

  187. that there would be times

  188. of refreshment

  189. and blessing to us.

  190. But we pray to know it, Lord,

  191. throughout our communities as well.

  192. In our homes,

  193. that there would be peace

  194. in families

  195. and among parents

  196. and children

  197. and all relationships like that.

  198. We pray for our workplaces, Lord,

  199. places where there can be

  200. so many challenges to us

  201. when we can feel resentment

  202. or anger in different ways,

  203. when we feel hurt

  204. or used in different ways.

  205. We pray, Lord,

  206. for peace

  207. and for your goodness

  208. and mercy upon us there.

  209. We pray for it in our schools

  210. and among our young people.

  211. We think of those

  212. who are growing up

  213. in a different generation

  214. to what we have known,

  215. with all the different pressures

  216. and worries that they bring

  217. in terms of technology

  218. and so many other different pressures

  219. weighing heavily

  220. upon our young people.

  221. We do pray, Lord,

  222. for your protection,

  223. your blessing

  224. on children,

  225. upon teachers,

  226. upon all the staff

  227. in our schools

  228. and the Nicholson

  229. and the primary schools

  230. and throughout our communities,

  231. that we would see

  232. your blessing

  233. poured out upon us.

  234. We do thank you, Lord,

  235. that the things

  236. that seem impossible for us,

  237. the things that seem

  238. outwith our control,

  239. the things that we seem

  240. to only ask,

  241. maybe thinking,

  242. is it ever possible

  243. that these things might be?

  244. We thank you

  245. that we come to the one

  246. through whom

  247. all things are possible.

  248. For you are God

  249. and you are Lord of all.

  250. You have power,

  251. you have authority

  252. over all things.

  253. And so help us, Lord,

  254. to have faith

  255. as we pray

  256. and that we would wait upon you

  257. and wait upon you

  258. with that great expectation

  259. that you are able

  260. to do abundantly more

  261. than all that we ask

  262. or imagine.

  263. So hear our prayers, Lord,

  264. and look down upon us.

  265. Continue with us

  266. as we open up your word

  267. this evening.

  268. Guide us through it

  269. and may your spirit

  270. work in our hearts

  271. and go with us

  272. in the week ahead, Lord,

  273. in all that we do

  274. and all the places

  275. that we go

  276. that your hand

  277. would guide us

  278. and uphold us

  279. and keep us

  280. and forgive us

  281. all our sins

  282. as we come anew

  283. this evening

  284. confessing before you

  285. that we are a people

  286. who fall short

  287. of your glory,

  288. that we can never

  289. meet your standards,

  290. that your ways

  291. are so far above our ways

  292. and your thoughts

  293. above ours.

  294. And yet, O Lord,

  295. we thank you

  296. for your mercy.

  297. We thank you

  298. for your grace

  299. towards us

  300. and we thank you

  301. for the forgiveness

  302. that we know

  303. as we confess

  304. in the name

  305. above every name,

  306. the name of our Lord

  307. and Saviour,

  308. Jesus Christ.

  309. So hear our prayers

  310. through him

  311. as we ask it all,

  312. seeking your favour

  313. upon us anew.

  314. In Jesus' name,

  315. Amen.

  316. Well, we're going to sing again

  317. to God's praise

  318. this time

  319. in the Scottish Psalter,

  320. singing in Psalm 86,

  321. page 341

  322. of the psalm books.

  323. Psalm 86,

  324. we're going to sing

  325. from verse 6

  326. down to verse 11.

  327. Psalm 86,

  328. at verse 6,

  329. page 341,

  330. Hear, Lord,

  331. my prayer

  332. and to my voice

  333. of my request

  334. attend.

  335. In troublous times

  336. I'll call on thee,

  337. for thou

  338. wilt answer send.

  339. The tune is Earshire

  340. and we sing

  341. from verse 6

  342. down to verse 11.

  343. Amen.

  344. Amen.

  345. Amen.

  346. Amen.

  347. Amen.

  348. Amen.

  349. Amen.

  350. έ έ έ

  351. Let us pray.

  352. Let us pray.

  353. which God has come, not any word is there.

  354. All nations, new the nations shall come

  355. and worship reverently

  356. before thy face and day, O Lord,

  357. thy name shall glorify.

  358. Cause the heart exceeding great

  359. and words by thee are done,

  360. which are to thee

  361. admire not the heart of thyself alone.

  362. Be thy way,

  363. I'm delighted, O Lord,

  364. and what will I?

  365. Good night, my heart,

  366. as I live with thee for January.

  367. Amen.

  368. We turn to read God's word together

  369. and we're reading in the book of Psalms.

  370. I'm going to read in Psalm 5,

  371. the whole of this Psalm.

  372. Psalm 5.

  373. You'll find it around page 538 of the church Bibles,

  374. if you're using them.

  375. Psalm 5.

  376. And we can read the whole of this Psalm together.

  377. It's a Psalm of David.

  378. Give ear to my words, O Lord,

  379. consider my groaning.

  380. Give attention to the sound of my cry,

  381. my King and my God.

  382. For to you do I pray.

  383. O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice.

  384. In the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

  385. For you are not a God who delights in wickedness.

  386. Evil may not dwell with you.

  387. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes.

  388. You hate all evildoers.

  389. You destroy those who speak lies.

  390. The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

  391. But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,

  392. will enter your house.

  393. I will bow down towards your holy temple

  394. in the fear of you.

  395. Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness

  396. because of my enemies.

  397. Make your way straight before me.

  398. For there is no truth in their mouth.

  399. Their inmost self is destruction.

  400. Their throat is an open grave.

  401. They flatter with their tongue.

  402. Make them bear their guilt, O God.

  403. Let them fall by their own counsels.

  404. Because of the abundance of their transgressions,

  405. cast them out.

  406. For they are rebelled against you.

  407. But let all who take refuge in you rejoice.

  408. Let them ever sing for joy

  409. and spread your protection over them.

  410. That those who love your name may exult in you.

  411. For you bless the righteous, O Lord.

  412. You cover him with favour as with a shield.

  413. Amen.

  414. And may God bless that reading from his word.

  415. We're going to sing in the Psalms again.

  416. Singing in Psalm 116.

  417. In the Sing Psalms version.

  418. Page 154.

  419. Psalm 116.

  420. Page 154.

  421. Psalm 116.

  422. Page 154.

  423. All our Psalms this evening have this theme of prayer being heard and answered by God in amazing ways.

  424. And of course, Psalm 116 is that prayer of love towards the Lord because he's heard the voice of the Psalmist.

  425. Psalm 116 at verse 1.

  426. I love the Lord because he heard my voice.

  427. He listened when I cried to him for aid.

  428. I'll call on him as long as I shall live because he turned to hear me when I prayed.

  429. We're going to sing from verse 1 down to verse 9 to God's praise and the tune is Eventide.

  430. I love the Lord because he heard my voice.

  431. He listened when I cried to him for aid.

  432. I'll call on him as long as I shall live because he turned to hear me when I prayed.

  433. In the hearts of death, breathed and eternal thee,

  434. Half on became free, languish of the grave,

  435. With grief and trouble I was overcome,

  436. Then on the name of God I call, Lord, sing.

  437. The Lord the Lord is kind and full of grace.

  438. O righteous and compassionate is he.

  439. The Lord protects all those of childlike faith.

  440. When I was in great need, he rescued me.

  441. O my soul, God has been good to you.

  442. For you, O Lord, have saved my soul from death.

  443. My feet from stumbling and my eyes from tears.

  444. That I may live for you while I am afraid.

  445. Amen.

  446. Well, we can turn back together to our reading in the book of Psalms and Psalm 5.

  447. And we can read again at the beginning of the psalm, the first three verses there.

  448. Give ear to my words, O Lord.

  449. Consider my groaning.

  450. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God.

  451. For to you do I pray.

  452. O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice.

  453. In the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

  454. And then at the end of the psalm, at verse 9, it says,

  455. The Lord has heard my plea.

  456. The Lord accepts my prayer.

  457. Sorry, wrong psalm.

  458. But let all who take refuge in you rejoice.

  459. Let them ever sing for joy and spread your protection over them.

  460. For those who love your name may exult in you.

  461. For you bless the righteous, O Lord.

  462. You cover him with favor as with a shield.

  463. The title for this evening's sermon is The Morning Prayer of Expectation.

  464. And it may not seem to make sense to have it in the evening.

  465. But it's just a reminder to us of the importance of prayer.

  466. And that's going to be the theme of our service this evening, the importance of prayer.

  467. And as you look at Psalm 5, you find here David beginning the day in prayer.

  468. And he's going on throughout the day, then looking and watching to God who he has prayed to

  469. and waiting with that sense of expectation.

  470. So that's why we call it the morning prayer of expectation.

  471. And prayer is such an important part of church life.

  472. It's an important part of the Christian life.

  473. Prayer is our relationship with God.

  474. Both in a congregational sense as we gather together, prayer is important.

  475. Every sermon, you hear every service, you come to, there's prayer in it.

  476. Every time we have a prayer meeting, it is about prayer, praying to God.

  477. There are times in our denomination once a year when we have a national day of prayer.

  478. A day that's set aside for that very purpose.

  479. But every day is a day of prayer.

  480. We have prayer meetings throughout the week.

  481. There's a monthly meeting on a Monday evening.

  482. There's prayer meetings in Laxdale on Tuesday.

  483. The English in the Seminary on Wednesday and the Gaelic on Thursday and the Seminary.

  484. There's the Saturday evening prayer meeting.

  485. Prayer is just part of our life and our routines.

  486. It's such an important thing.

  487. But how do we approach it?

  488. It can sometimes become just a habit.

  489. It can become something of just going through a routine.

  490. And that's something we always have to guard against.

  491. Do we have a sense of expectation as we come to prayer?

  492. Yeah.

  493. I think it's good to remind ourselves that that is the way that we should come.

  494. We should always come with a sense of expectation that we are praying not to ourselves,

  495. not to a people who we see around us, but that we are lifting up our voice to God,

  496. the God of heaven and earth.

  497. And that we remember who it is that we are praying to.

  498. That then helps us to have that sense of expectation and anticipation of what God can do.

  499. Because there may be times when we sense that coming to God and we feel that things are beyond

  500. our reach, beyond change, beyond our capabilities, beyond recovery.

  501. There are things that are just totally outwith our control.

  502. And in a way, it's good that we would come like that.

  503. Because that then reminds us that is why we come to God in prayer.

  504. Because what is impossible with man, it is possible with God.

  505. And so it's that dependence that we have.

  506. And that's what we see with David in this psalm.

  507. When we think of prayer and its importance, it is our lifeblood, our relationship with God.

  508. And we see it with David in the psalms again and again.

  509. In his own life, we see it again and again.

  510. And with all God's people in the scriptures, you see it as so vital, so important.

  511. And does it make a difference?

  512. Well, of course it does.

  513. When you look at David in this psalm, he's beginning his day with that sense of expectation,

  514. praying to God, I'm crying to you, my enemies are all around me.

  515. And yet he concludes this psalm with that, you cover him with favor as with a shield.

  516. So he knows that God has been with him.

  517. He knows that God is looking after him.

  518. And you see it again and again through the scriptures, how God answers prayer in amazing ways.

  519. But it's not just in the scriptures.

  520. Many of us can testify to it in our own lives.

  521. The way God has answered prayer.

  522. The way God has helped us in different situations.

  523. The way God, maybe even today, you've been praying about someone or something or yourself.

  524. And you've seen God do something remarkable, something amazing.

  525. That God is able to answer prayer.

  526. And we can all look back, I'm sure, and see answered prayer in so many different ways.

  527. And I'm sure many of us can look back and not just see answered prayer, but see how many of us are tokens to answered prayer.

  528. The people who prayed for us when we seemed maybe beyond the reach of God.

  529. When we seemed so far away from God that salvation was the last thing on our mind.

  530. And yet people were praying.

  531. And by God's grace, he brought us to himself.

  532. That many of us are tokens to answered prayers.

  533. Faithful prayers.

  534. People who wouldn't give up in prayer.

  535. Who kept praying.

  536. Always believing that this God who we are praying to, the God of heaven and earth.

  537. He is able to save.

  538. He is able to do so much more than all that we ask or imagine.

  539. And the scripture is full of people who are faithful in prayer.

  540. David here we're seeing, but there's others too.

  541. You think maybe names might come to mind immediately.

  542. You think maybe of Daniel.

  543. Daniel was a man of prayer.

  544. And a man of prayer no matter what.

  545. Didn't matter what was going on around him or what the threat was.

  546. He still prayed to God.

  547. That's what you read of in Daniel chapter 6.

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  548. When they decided, the wise men around Nebuchadnezzar decided that all prayer was to be made to him as king.

  549. Not to God.

  550. So they said, anyone who prays to any God or man during the next 30 days except to you, O king,

  551. shall be thrown into the lion's den.

  552. The lion's den was the threat for anyone who would pray to any other God or man apart from Nebuchadnezzar.

  553. And it was a real threat.

  554. It wasn't just they were saying something they weren't going to do.

  555. We know because they were thrown into the lion's den.

  556. But what was Daniel's response?

  557. Was he terrified of this?

  558. Was he afraid of this and said, I better stop praying?

  559. No.

  560. Daniel's response was when he learned about the decree that had been published in verse 10.

  561. He went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem.

  562. And three times a day, he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God,

  563. just as he had done before.

  564. He was faithful in prayer.

  565. And God heard and answered his prayers in amazing ways.

  566. And so you see it throughout the scripture, this relationship of God with his people.

  567. And even Jesus himself is a reminder to us of the importance of prayer.

  568. Jesus spent time in prayer with his Father.

  569. And it was often at times when things were busy.

  570. In the Gospel of Luke chapter 5, for example, you read there that there were large crowds

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  571. who were hearing about him and starting to come and follow him.

  572. But in verse 16 of Luke 5, it says,

  573. But he, that's Jesus, would withdraw to desolate places and pray.

  574. So you see there, it wasn't just once.

  575. It was his habit, his routine.

  576. He would withdraw to desolate places and pray.

  577. He would find his quiet place to pray.

  578. And down through history, there's so many examples given to us of people who were faithful in prayer.

  579. People who put us to shame as you read about them and the kind of prayer life that they had.

  580. For example, Matthew Henry, who wrote a commentary on the whole Bible.

  581. It's said of him that he would spend eight hours a day in pure study and prayer.

  582. Eight hours a day in pure study and prayer.

  583. And so many of the Puritan theologians of the 16th, 17th century, the same was true of them.

  584. They were people of prayer.

  585. And so we are reminded again and again of the importance of prayer.

  586. And as somebody once put it, if you are too busy to pray, you are too busy.

  587. If you don't have time to pray, you're not using your time right.

  588. That's the challenge to us all the time, is it not?

  589. Our relationship with God in prayer.

  590. And I'm saying this to myself first.

  591. And the situation with David here in Psalm 5 is one,

  592. when we see him in a situation where there's so much going on around him.

  593. There's so much that's going on that's weighing heavy upon him.

  594. He's surrounded by enemies.

  595. He's surrounded by those who are out to get him.

  596. Those who are looking for an opportunity to bring him down.

  597. Making him out to be an enemy of the people.

  598. And yet, who is David?

  599. Who is this David we read of in the Psalms?

  600. Who is this David we read of in the Scriptures?

  601. He is the king who was chosen by God.

  602. He is the one through whom the line of Jesus would come.

  603. So he is appointed by God.

  604. He is a man after God's own heart, as the word describes him.

  605. He is someone who has this closeness with God.

  606. And yet, here he is under attack.

  607. Here he is with his troubles are never far away, as it were.

  608. And what we see him again and again is reminding us of the need to cry out to God.

  609. And how real this cry is.

  610. How real this prayer is.

  611. The example we are given by David here is to begin each day in prayer with God.

  612. And look with that expectation to him.

  613. The God who shields and watches over his people.

  614. Prayer is so important.

  615. Spurgeon, Charles Spurgeon, in his book entitled Only a Prayer Meeting,

  616. he speaks about the importance of prayer in that sense of togetherness.

  617. And in his first chapter, there's two points that kind of stand out for me.

  618. He said this, how could we expect a blessing if we're too idle to ask for it?

  619. How can we expect a blessing if we're too idle to ask for it?

  620. The importance of having that time of prayer with God.

  621. But also of that collective nature of prayer, being together in prayer.

  622. He said, how could we look for a Pentecost if we're never met with one accord in one place to wait upon the Lord?

  623. How can we expect the blessing of God to be poured out if we're not meeting together with one accord in one place to wait upon the Lord?

  624. To have that sense of watching and waiting expectantly on God.

  625. And so there's lessons for us to learn from this psalm.

  626. And the first thing is I want to see is David's approach is to God.

  627. And it sounds obvious, doesn't it?

  628. David's approach is to God.

  629. But it's key because he doesn't start to deal with things by himself.

  630. He has God with him.

  631. And prayer has been much in the news recently.

  632. And not for the reasons we would want it as such.

  633. But it highlights that even in a negative sense it can highlight how important prayer is to people.

  634. For example, just in the last month there has been a call by some to scrap Christian prayers

  635. at the start of every session of the House of Commons.

  636. We don't need prayer today.

  637. We've moved on, was what some were saying.

  638. And yet it was met with a pushback.

  639. That there are still those who see the importance of prayer.

  640. But it's just a reminder to us that that's the mindset of so many.

  641. We don't need prayer.

  642. We've seen it too in the news recently with talk of exclusion zones around health clinics.

  643. Now without going into the details of why they're set,

  644. it's the challenge that it's bringing towards those who would seek to be a praying people.

  645. Where the threat is seen not just in the zones around,

  646. but even in the homes around them as being under threat if you're praying.

  647. Even in your own home.

  648. That there could be a challenge against you.

  649. And so there's all these things that are being highlighted for us

  650. about the challenge that's being made against prayer.

  651. Let's get rid of prayer.

  652. Instead of seeing the gift and power that there is in prayer.

  653. And who it is that we're praying to and what he's able to do for us.

  654. And David reminds us in this psalm that in these days,

  655. even our own days today,

  656. it is such a time to see prayer and its importance.

  657. And to see that it is only by seeking God in these days

  658. that we will know days of blessing and days of peace.

  659. And so David's approach is to God.

  660. And his approach is in the morning.

  661. C.S. Lewis said,

  662. What was he saying?

  663. He was saying,

  664. We wake up in the morning and we can immediately be faced with,

  665. I need to do this, that, and the next thing.

  666. It's all such a rush.

  667. And yet he's saying it's time,

  668. that time in the morning is that time to make sure we push back

  669. on all these things that will come as a first priority to us

  670. and just make sure that we let that voice of the Lord come in.

  671. That time with the Lord come in.

  672. And so there's the challenge.

  673. David is approaching God,

  674. and he's approaching him in the morning.

  675. Is that our priority at the beginning of the day?

  676. To have that time with God.

  677. Because the temptation would have been there for David here as well.

  678. That same temptation coming under attack from those around him.

  679. It would be so easy for him to turn on the offense,

  680. to go on the attack against them.

  681. But what he does is he approaches his Lord,

  682. his God,

  683. and his King.

  684. David,

  685. a king,

  686. a royal king in this world,

  687. still sees his dependence upon the Lord,

  688. the Lord of all.

  689. And so David is a great example to us

  690. of the need for ourselves

  691. to pray as well.

  692. And he approaches God in an honest way.

  693. Look at how he comes to him.

  694. Give ear to my words,

  695. O Lord.

  696. Consider my groaning.

  697. Give attention to the sound of my cry.

  698. So he comes honestly.

  699. He comes with words.

  700. It's obvious as we pray that we use words.

  701. But then he says,

  702. Consider my groaning.

  703. And hear my cries.

  704. The sound of my cry.

  705. And so he's coming,

  706. just bearing his heart to God in every way.

  707. It's not a case of approaching God

  708. depending on how you feel.

  709. It's not a case of saying,

  710. I don't feel close to God just now.

  711. I shouldn't come and pray.

  712. It's coming whatever our situation,

  713. whatever our circumstances.

  714. Yes,

  715. when there are times

  716. when we can express our prayers in words,

  717. but other times our prayers are just a groan.

  718. They're just a noise that maybe comes out of us.

  719. The groaning of our heart.

  720. Or the cries of anguish that sometimes come.

  721. They're still prayers that God hears.

  722. And so we are to approach God with all our burdens,

  723. all our cares.

  724. And you notice too how he approaches God

  725. in such a personal way.

  726. Give ear to my words,

  727. O Lord.

  728. He is coming in that sense of knowing

  729. who he is coming to.

  730. And then at the end of verse 2,

  731. he says,

  732. My King and my God,

  733. for to you do I pray.

  734. So there's this personal nature

  735. of coming to God.

  736. My Lord,

  737. my King,

  738. my God.

  739. And that's the relationship

  740. that's open to us.

  741. Every one of us can come

  742. and approach the Lord,

  743. the King,

  744. my God,

  745. in that same way.

  746. He is the one

  747. who is there for us.

  748. He is the one alone

  749. who is able to help.

  750. We can approach God

  751. through Jesus Christ,

  752. our Lord,

  753. the King of kings

  754. and Lord of lords.

  755. What a wonderful privilege it is

  756. to be able to approach God,

  757. the same God

  758. as David prayed to,

  759. the same God

  760. that Daniel

  761. was praying to,

  762. the same God

  763. down through all the generations,

  764. the only God

  765. who is able to help.

  766. Somebody once said this,

  767. Prayer is man's

  768. greatest means

  769. of tapping

  770. the infinite resources

  771. of God,

  772. invoking by prayer

  773. the mercy and might

  774. of God

  775. as our most effective means

  776. of guaranteeing peace

  777. and security

  778. for the harassed

  779. and helpless people

  780. of this earth.

  781. Invoking by prayer

  782. the mercy and might

  783. of God.

  784. That is what we have

  785. in prayer.

  786. We have that access.

  787. We approach the God

  788. who is able

  789. to do so much more

  790. than we can ask

  791. of him.

  792. So much more

  793. than we can even imagine

  794. in our own minds.

  795. He is able

  796. to do it.

  797. So David's approach

  798. is to God

  799. and so

  800. is ours.

  801. Second thing we see

  802. is David's approach

  803. is a priority.

  804. It's a priority.

  805. And again,

  806. we see it just here

  807. how he

  808. just comes

  809. to him

  810. in this sense

  811. of it's

  812. the most important

  813. and the most precious

  814. thing he could do.

  815. Martin Luther,

  816. the reformer,

  817. again,

  818. who we're studying

  819. in the Bible study

  820. on Wednesday evenings,

  821. the Reformation,

  822. and it was Martin Luther

  823. who was at the heart

  824. of that.

  825. He did so much

  826. to bring the truths

  827. of the gospel

  828. to the people

  829. of God.

  830. And he would spend

  831. at least two hours

  832. a day

  833. in private prayer.

  834. And he once said

  835. to a friend of his,

  836. he said,

  837. I've got so much

  838. to do tomorrow.

  839. I need to spend

  840. an extra day,

  841. an extra hour

  842. in prayer.

  843. Now,

  844. is that the kind

  845. of response

  846. we would have

  847. to the busyness

  848. of life?

  849. I've got so much

  850. to do tomorrow

  851. that I'll add

  852. an extra hour

  853. of prayer

  854. into my schedule.

  855. We would probably

  856. go the other way.

  857. We would think,

  858. I've got so much

  859. to do tomorrow,

  860. I'll need to cut

  861. back on my time

  862. in prayer.

  863. And yet,

  864. for Martin Luther,

  865. the priority

  866. was that

  867. prayerful relationship.

  868. The priority

  869. with David

  870. here is that

  871. prayer

  872. with God.

  873. That morning

  874. prayer with God,

  875. even though

  876. there's so much

  877. going on.

  878. It was John Bunyan

  879. who once said,

  880. he who runs

  881. from God

  882. in the morning

  883. will scarcely

  884. find him

  885. the rest

  886. of the day.

  887. And again,

  888. it's just that

  889. reminder for

  890. ourselves

  891. that in our

  892. prayer life,

  893. it is so important

  894. to begin

  895. the day

  896. in prayer.

  897. That priority

  898. of beginning

  899. the day

  900. in prayer

  901. with God

  902. is set

  903. the day

  904. before him.

  905. We depend

  906. on him.

  907. Jesus'

  908. prayer life

  909. was there

  910. to see us

  911. as well as

  912. we saw

  913. in Luke's

  914. gospel,

  915. how he would

  916. go away

  917. to a

  918. quiet

  919. place

  920. and pray.

  921. But you

  922. also see

  923. that so

  924. often

  925. it was

  926. in the

  927. early

  928. hours

  929. of the

  930. morning,

  931. in that

  932. quiet

  933. time

  934. of the

  935. day.

  936. And that's

  937. again a

  938. lesson to

  939. us.

  940. When we

  941. are fresh,

  942. when we

  943. have just

  944. had our

  945. night's

  946. sleep,

  947. when we

  948. are about

  949. to go

  950. into

  951. the

  952. busyness

  953. of a

  954. day,

  955. that we

  956. give that

  957. quality

  958. time

  959. to God.

  960. Because we

  961. have every

  962. reason to.

  963. because you

  964. see in the

  965. scriptures how

  966. often it

  967. tells us that

  968. the blessings

  969. of God are

  970. new each

  971. morning.

  972. Lamentation

  973. speaks of it

  974. in chapter

  975. 3,

  976. verse 22,

  977. because of

  978. the Lord's

  979. great love,

  980. we are not

  981. consumed,

  982. for his

  983. compassion

  984. never fail.

  985. So there's

  986. that reminder

  987. of his

  988. great love

  989. towards us.

  990. So what

  991. other reason

  992. do we need

  993. to come

  994. and pray

  995. than we

  996. know the

  997. Lord's

  998. great love.

  999. We are

  1000. not

  1001. consumed,

  1002. we don't

  1003. get what

  1004. we deserve

  1005. because of

  1006. his

  1007. compassions

  1008. that never

  1009. fail.

  1010. So we

  1011. have all

  1012. of these

  1013. reasons,

  1014. but then

  1015. in the

  1016. next verse

  1017. it says

  1018. they are

  1019. new

  1020. every

  1021. morning.

  1022. So it's

  1023. not just

  1024. a one-off.

  1025. It's not

  1026. just we

  1027. pray on

  1028. the Monday

  1029. for the

  1030. whole week

  1031. ahead and

  1032. don't come

  1033. back again

  1034. until the

  1035. next Monday.

  1036. Our

  1037. relationship

  1038. with God

  1039. is on a

  1040. daily basis.

  1041. They are

  1042. new every

  1043. morning.

  1044. Great is

  1045. your

  1046. faithfulness

  1047. it says

  1048. in

  1049. lamentations.

  1050. So we

  1051. have that

  1052. reminder

  1053. every day

  1054. we have

  1055. reason to

  1056. give thanks

  1057. to God,

  1058. to make it

  1059. our priority

  1060. to come

  1061. to him

  1062. and especially

  1063. in the

  1064. morning.

  1065. Zephaniah

  1066. has the

  1067. same thing.

  1068. Zephaniah

    Zephaniah 3:5

  1069. chapter 3

  1070. verse 5

  1071. The Lord

  1072. within her

  1073. is righteous.

  1074. He does

  1075. no wrong.

  1076. Morning by

  1077. morning he

  1078. dispenses

  1079. his justice

  1080. and every

  1081. new day

  1082. he does

  1083. not fail.

  1084. Again

  1085. there's this

  1086. reminder

  1087. it's every

  1088. new day

  1089. morning by

  1090. morning he

  1091. dispenses

  1092. his justice.

  1093. So every

  1094. day

  1095. you wouldn't

  1096. miss breakfast

  1097. or you

  1098. wouldn't miss

  1099. a meal

  1100. in the

  1101. day that's

  1102. going to

  1103. keep you

  1104. going.

  1105. And so

  1106. we see

  1107. here

  1108. morning by

  1109. morning

  1110. we are

  1111. reminded of

  1112. his great

  1113. faithfulness.

  1114. And so

  1115. we are to

  1116. make it

  1117. that priority

  1118. to come

  1119. to him.

  1120. Are we

  1121. giving the

  1122. best to

  1123. God in

  1124. terms of

  1125. our prayers

  1126. and beginning

  1127. each day

  1128. with him?

  1129. In many

  1130. ways and

  1131. you see it

  1132. here in

  1133. David what

  1134. he says

  1135. in the

  1136. morning you

  1137. hear my

  1138. voice in

  1139. the morning

  1140. I prepare

  1141. a sacrifice

  1142. for you.

  1143. And so

  1144. there's this

  1145. sense of

  1146. prayer it

  1147. is a

  1148. sacrifice.

  1149. We don't

  1150. prepare a

  1151. sacrifice maybe

  1152. in the same

  1153. way that was

  1154. done in the

  1155. Old Testament

  1156. but prayer

  1157. is still a

  1158. sacrifice.

  1159. It is still

  1160. something costly

  1161. something that

  1162. takes time

  1163. for us to

  1164. prepare and

  1165. to come

  1166. to God

  1167. with.

  1168. And it's

  1169. pleasing

  1170. to God.

  1171. So let us

  1172. make it our

  1173. priority to

  1174. pray.

  1175. Each new

  1176. day to be

  1177. as David

  1178. was coming

  1179. to the

  1180. Lord in

  1181. the morning

  1182. in the

  1183. freshness of

  1184. the day

  1185. thankful for

  1186. the Lord's

  1187. mercies that

  1188. are new each

  1189. day, for

  1190. his faithfulness

  1191. each day,

  1192. for all that

  1193. he gives us

  1194. day by day,

  1195. coming with

  1196. thankfulness to

  1197. him, to

  1198. commit that

  1199. day ahead

  1200. to him,

  1201. asking for

  1202. blessings anew

  1203. in it.

  1204. So it's a

  1205. priority.

  1206. The final

  1207. thing we see

  1208. here is David's

  1209. approach is

  1210. with confidence.

  1211. And you see

  1212. that just in

  1213. these two

  1214. words at the

  1215. end of verse

  1216. 3.

  1217. And watch.

  1218. O Lord, in

  1219. the morning you

  1220. hear my voice.

  1221. In the morning

  1222. I prepare a

  1223. sacrifice for

  1224. you and

  1225. watch.

  1226. As David

  1227. offers his

  1228. morning prayer

  1229. to God, he

  1230. does so in

  1231. a way where

  1232. he leaves it

  1233. with the

  1234. Lord and

  1235. waits expectantly

  1236. on him.

  1237. How often

  1238. are you guilty

  1239. of praying,

  1240. committing

  1241. something to

  1242. God in

  1243. prayer, but

  1244. you can't

  1245. wait.

  1246. You can't

  1247. wait for an

  1248. answer.

  1249. You can't

  1250. wait to see

  1251. if God is

  1252. going to

  1253. work.

  1254. You start

  1255. to take

  1256. the situation

  1257. into your

  1258. own hands.

  1259. You'll do

  1260. something about

  1261. it yourself.

  1262. We all

  1263. do it.

  1264. We all

  1265. lose patience.

  1266. We all

  1267. try and do

  1268. things in

  1269. our own

  1270. way instead

  1271. of waiting

  1272. on God.

  1273. But here's

  1274. another reminder

  1275. to us

  1276. that God

  1277. is never

  1278. idle.

  1279. God is

  1280. never not

  1281. listening to

  1282. our prayers.

  1283. He doesn't

  1284. always give

  1285. us what

  1286. we want

  1287. as we

  1288. were thinking

  1289. this morning,

  1290. but he

  1291. does give

  1292. us what

  1293. we need.

  1294. And he

  1295. doesn't turn

  1296. any prayer

  1297. away.

  1298. He hears

  1299. our prayer,

  1300. and we are

  1301. to pray that

  1302. prayer in

  1303. his will

  1304. to be done.

  1305. And that's

  1306. what David

  1307. is saying

  1308. here in

  1309. these words.

  1310. He offers

  1311. up his

  1312. prayer and

  1313. his sacrifice

  1314. in the

  1315. morning and

  1316. watches.

  1317. watches.

  1318. And the

  1319. word there

  1320. for watch

  1321. has that

  1322. great sense

  1323. of expectation

  1324. behind it,

  1325. where he's

  1326. looking to

  1327. God, where

  1328. he's looking

  1329. to see what

  1330. is God

  1331. going to

  1332. do today.

  1333. There's a

  1334. sense of

  1335. excitement,

  1336. anticipation

  1337. in praying

  1338. to God.

  1339. And again,

  1340. we think of

  1341. our own

  1342. prayer life.

  1343. Do we

  1344. have that

  1345. sense of

  1346. expectation,

  1347. anticipation

  1348. as we pray

  1349. to God?

  1350. What is he

  1351. going to

  1352. do?

  1353. How is he

  1354. going to

  1355. work in

  1356. our midst?

  1357. And we

  1358. just think

  1359. of things

  1360. that we

  1361. have prayed

  1362. for as

  1363. a congregation.

  1364. What have

  1365. we prayed

  1366. for when

  1367. we've seen

  1368. God answer

  1369. prayer?

  1370. When we've

  1371. prayed for

  1372. conversions,

  1373. have we

  1374. prayed

  1375. expectantly

  1376. and watched

  1377. and waited

  1378. and say,

  1379. God, you

  1380. are going

  1381. to do

  1382. it?

  1383. Well, we've

  1384. seen it.

  1385. We've seen

  1386. people come

  1387. to faith.

  1388. Praise God,

  1389. he has

  1390. heard,

  1391. prayers.

  1392. We think

  1393. of different

  1394. things going

  1395. on in

  1396. our congregation.

  1397. Whether it's

  1398. Friday at the

  1399. Free, as

  1400. people have

  1401. prayed for

  1402. that, and

  1403. we've

  1404. prayed,

  1405. Lord, let

  1406. us see

  1407. people come

  1408. in.

  1409. Let us

  1410. see people

  1411. show an

  1412. interest in

  1413. the gospel

  1414. here.

  1415. Praise God,

  1416. we've seen

  1417. prayer answered.

  1418. We've been

  1419. able to watch

  1420. and wait on

  1421. God and see

  1422. amazing ways

  1423. that he

  1424. has answered

  1425. prayer.

  1426. Think of

  1427. prayers for

  1428. holiday clubs

  1429. or youth

  1430. work,

  1431. praying for

  1432. young people

  1433. to come.

  1434. Praise God

  1435. they're here

  1436. tonight.

  1437. They're here,

  1438. you're here

  1439. with us.

  1440. The gospel is

  1441. being heard and

  1442. we see it in

  1443. the mornings as

  1444. they go out to

  1445. Sunday school.

  1446. We see it

  1447. week by week.

  1448. Praise God,

  1449. he has

  1450. answered

  1451. prayer.

  1452. And has that

  1453. been because of

  1454. our confidence?

  1455. confidence.

  1456. Well,

  1457. sometimes it's

  1458. despite our

  1459. lack of

  1460. confidence.

  1461. But we are

  1462. reminded here

  1463. that as we

  1464. pray to

  1465. God,

  1466. we pray

  1467. and watch.

  1468. That sense

  1469. of expectation,

  1470. God is

  1471. able.

  1472. So that

  1473. whatever it

  1474. is that we're

  1475. asking for,

  1476. he is

  1477. able.

  1478. You see it

  1479. with the

  1480. prophets in

  1481. the Old

  1482. Testament as

  1483. well.

  1484. The prophet

  1485. Isaiah in

  1486. chapter 30.

  1487. verse 18.

  1488. Therefore the

  1489. Lord waits to

  1490. be gracious

  1491. to you and

  1492. therefore he

  1493. exalts himself

  1494. to show

  1495. mercy to

  1496. you.

  1497. For the

  1498. Lord is a

  1499. God of

  1500. justice.

  1501. Blessed are

  1502. those who

  1503. wait for

  1504. him.

  1505. There is

  1506. blessing in

  1507. waiting on

  1508. the Lord.

  1509. Micah the

  1510. prophet, he

  1511. had the same

  1512. experience.

  1513. And you can

  1514. often go through

  1515. so many of

  1516. the Lord's

  1517. people in

  1518. the scriptures

  1519. waiting on

  1520. God.

  1521. Micah 7

    Micah 7:7

  1522. verse 7.

  1523. But as

  1524. for me, I

  1525. watch in

  1526. hope for

  1527. the Lord.

  1528. I wait for

  1529. God my

  1530. Savior.

  1531. My God

  1532. will hear

  1533. me.

  1534. There's

  1535. confidence.

  1536. God will

  1537. deal with

  1538. this.

  1539. And

  1540. surely there's

  1541. a sense of

  1542. excitement in

  1543. that.

  1544. That God

  1545. is able to

  1546. deal with

  1547. this.

  1548. For David,

  1549. he had

  1550. offered his

  1551. prayer, he

  1552. had offered

  1553. his sacrifice,

  1554. and watch.

  1555. He is

  1556. able to

  1557. wait for

  1558. God.

  1559. In

  1560. Psalm

  1561. 116,

  1562. as we

  1563. sang there,

  1564. the second

  1565. half of

  1566. verse 5,

  1567. the Lord

  1568. protects all

  1569. those of

  1570. childlike

  1571. faith.

  1572. When I was

  1573. in great

  1574. need, he

  1575. rescued me.

  1576. The Psalm

  1577. is all about

  1578. crying out

  1579. to God.

  1580. Do we

  1581. have that

  1582. childlike

  1583. faith?

  1584. That

  1585. childlike

  1586. faith, that

  1587. dependence on

  1588. him.

  1589. We need to

  1590. be like

  1591. that child,

  1592. but a

  1593. child with

  1594. that sense

  1595. of expectation,

  1596. childlike

  1597. faith, where

  1598. we trust

  1599. that God

  1600. is able.

  1601. Dr.

  1602. Helen

  1603. Rosevear,

  1604. she was a

  1605. missionary in

  1606. Africa, and

  1607. she tells

  1608. some amazing

  1609. stories of

  1610. how she saw

  1611. prayer answered.

  1612. I wanted to

  1613. finish with

  1614. this one.

  1615. It's a story

  1616. of a time

  1617. when they

  1618. had had a

  1619. great tragedy

  1620. where they

  1621. were.

  1622. She was

  1623. working in

  1624. a mission

  1625. station, and

  1626. she was

  1627. working among

  1628. young mothers,

  1629. and she

  1630. said this

  1631. day a

  1632. mother at

  1633. her mission

  1634. station died

  1635. giving birth

  1636. to a

  1637. premature

  1638. baby.

  1639. So obviously

  1640. it was a

  1641. difficult time,

  1642. and they

  1643. didn't have

  1644. the medical

  1645. facilities

  1646. that we

  1647. have today.

  1648. And she

  1649. was saying

  1650. we tried

  1651. to improvise

  1652. an incubator

  1653. to keep

  1654. the infant

  1655. alive, to

  1656. keep the

  1657. baby warm.

  1658. But the

  1659. only hot

  1660. water bottle

  1661. we had

  1662. was beyond

  1663. repair.

  1664. And so

  1665. we asked

  1666. the children

  1667. to pray

  1668. for the

  1669. baby and

  1670. for her

  1671. sister.

  1672. And she

  1673. goes on to

  1674. say one

  1675. of the

  1676. girls responded

  1677. and prayed

  1678. like this,

  1679. dear God,

  1680. please send

  1681. a hot

  1682. water bottle

  1683. today.

  1684. Tomorrow

  1685. will be

  1686. too late,

  1687. because by

  1688. then the

  1689. baby will

  1690. have died.

  1691. And dear

  1692. Lord,

  1693. please send

  1694. a doll

  1695. for the

  1696. sister so

  1697. she won't

  1698. feel lonely.

  1699. It's such

  1700. a simple

  1701. prayer,

  1702. a child

  1703. prayer.

  1704. Well,

  1705. that afternoon

  1706. she said a

  1707. large package

  1708. arrived from

  1709. England.

  1710. And the

  1711. children watched

  1712. eagerly,

  1713. she said,

  1714. as we

  1715. opened it.

  1716. And much

  1717. to their

  1718. surprise,

  1719. under some

  1720. clothing,

  1721. was a

  1722. hot water

  1723. bottle.

  1724. The

  1725. prayer was

  1726. answered.

  1727. But the

  1728. little girl

  1729. who had

  1730. prayed,

  1731. what did

  1732. she start

  1733. doing?

  1734. Ellen

  1735. Rosevear

  1736. says immediately

  1737. she started

  1738. digging into

  1739. the package

  1740. and exclaiming

  1741. with great

  1742. excitement,

  1743. well,

  1744. if God

  1745. sent that

  1746. hot water

  1747. bottle,

  1748. I'm sure

  1749. he sent

  1750. a doll

  1751. too.

  1752. And there

  1753. in the

  1754. bottom of

  1755. the box

  1756. was a

  1757. doll.

  1758. And what

  1759. was so

  1760. amazing

  1761. about it

  1762. was God's

  1763. timing.

  1764. It was

  1765. five months

  1766. previous that

  1767. that package

  1768. had been

  1769. made up

  1770. and sent

  1771. from England

  1772. and sent

  1773. over to

  1774. this mission

  1775. station in

  1776. Africa to

  1777. arrive on

  1778. that very

  1779. day that

  1780. it was

  1781. needed.

  1782. God

  1783. had known

  1784. that prayer

  1785. even before

  1786. it was

  1787. offered up.

  1788. They'd

  1789. known,

  1790. he had

  1791. known

  1792. their

  1793. need.

  1794. That

  1795. childlike

  1796. faith

  1797. was

  1798. rewarded.

  1799. And God

  1800. has promised

  1801. to hear

  1802. his praying

  1803. people.

  1804. And that's

  1805. what we

  1806. have to

  1807. remind

  1808. ourselves

  1809. of too.

  1810. We are

  1811. to come

  1812. and approach

  1813. God who

  1814. is able,

  1815. God who

  1816. is Lord

  1817. of all.

  1818. And we

  1819. are to

  1820. make it

  1821. our priority

  1822. to come.

  1823. God

  1824. and we

  1825. are to

  1826. wait and

  1827. watch

  1828. with that

  1829. expectation

  1830. as we

  1831. do so

  1832. that he

  1833. is able

  1834. to hear

  1835. and answer

  1836. prayer.

  1837. And again,

  1838. somebody wants

  1839. prayer like

  1840. this, when

  1841. we pray we

  1842. are to

  1843. remember

  1844. three things.

  1845. First,

  1846. the love

  1847. of God

  1848. that wants

  1849. the best

  1850. for us.

  1851. Secondly,

  1852. the wisdom

  1853. of God

  1854. that knows

  1855. what is

  1856. best for

  1857. us.

  1858. And thirdly,

  1859. the power

  1860. of God

  1861. that can

  1862. accomplish

  1863. it.

  1864. And so

  1865. as we

  1866. think of

  1867. David

  1868. here,

  1869. reminding

  1870. us of

  1871. the importance

  1872. of prayer,

  1873. let us

  1874. have that

  1875. confidence,

  1876. that boldness

  1877. to come

  1878. and approach

  1879. God with

  1880. all our

  1881. cares,

  1882. with all

  1883. our

  1884. prayers,

  1885. making it

  1886. our

  1887. priority

  1888. and knowing

  1889. that he

  1890. is able,

  1891. that we

  1892. can watch

  1893. and wait

  1894. for him

  1895. to do

  1896. more than

  1897. we ever

  1898. ask or

  1899. imagine.

  1900. Let us

  1901. pray.

  1902. Lord,

  1903. our

  1904. gracious

  1905. God,

  1906. we do

  1907. thank you

  1908. that we

  1909. have such

  1910. great power

  1911. in prayer,

  1912. not from

  1913. ourselves,

  1914. but in

  1915. the one

  1916. to whom

  1917. we offer

  1918. our prayers

  1919. up to.

  1920. We thank

  1921. you that

  1922. the way

  1923. is opened

  1924. up for

  1925. us

  1926. through

  1927. Jesus

  1928. Christ,

  1929. our

  1930. Lord,

  1931. that we

  1932. come in

  1933. his name,

  1934. the name

  1935. above

  1936. every name,

  1937. acknowledging

  1938. their

  1939. dependence

  1940. upon you

  1941. and thankful

  1942. for every

  1943. blessing that

  1944. you give

  1945. to us.

  1946. Your

  1947. blessings

  1948. new each

  1949. morning,

  1950. great is

  1951. your

  1952. faithfulness,

  1953. and may

  1954. you make

  1955. us a

  1956. faithful

  1957. people

  1958. to keep

  1959. on praying

  1960. and not

  1961. to lose

  1962. heart,

  1963. and to

  1964. remember

  1965. that we

  1966. can watch

  1967. and wait

  1968. with

  1969. expectation,

  1970. for you

  1971. are God

  1972. who is

  1973. able.

  1974. So continue

  1975. to hear

  1976. our prayers,

  1977. continue to

  1978. answer

  1979. according to

  1980. your will,

  1981. and teach us

  1982. always to

  1983. pray as a

  1984. priority in

  1985. our lives.

  1986. We ask it

  1987. with the

  1988. forgiveness of

  1989. our sin,

  1990. in Jesus'

  1991. name,

  1992. Amen.

  1993. We're going

  1994. to conclude

  1995. by singing

  1996. from this

  1997. psalm that

  1998. we've been

  1999. looking at,

  2000. Psalm 5.

  2001. In the

  2002. Sing Psalms

  2003. version,

  2004. the first

  2005. two stanzas,

  2006. Psalm 5

  2007. on page

  2008. 4,

  2009. the tune

  2010. is Arlington,

  2011. O Lord,

  2012. give ear to

  2013. what I say.

  2014. Think on

  2015. me as I

  2016. sigh,

  2017. and listen,

  2018. O my

  2019. King and

  2020. God,

  2021. as I

  2022. plead

  2023. earnestly

  2024. for help,

  2025. because

  2026. to you

  2027. I cry.

  2028. We'll sing

  2029. the first

  2030. two stanzas

  2031. to God's

  2032. praise.

  2033. Amen.

  2034. singing,

2035. As morning light returns again

2036. I lay before you my request

  2037. And with expectation here

2038. After the benediction I'll go to the door to my left

2039. We'll close with the benediction

2040. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God

2041. Father, Son and Holy Spirit

2042. Rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore

  2043. Amen

  2044. Amen

  2045. Amen

  2046. Thank you.
