    John 8 chapter mention

  14. Jesus said,

  15. As we come to the risen Lord Jesus Christ this morning, this evening, let us believe in him and we will never hunger.

  16. We will not thirst.

  17. We will not thirst.

  18. We will be satisfied in him.

  19. Let us come to him then with our praise this evening.

  20. We're going to stand together to sing from the Scottish shelter Psalm 100.

  21. All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.

  22. Let us stand to sing God's praise.

  23. Let us stand to sing God's praise.

  24. Let us stand to sing God's praise.

  25. Let us stand to sing God's praise.

  26. Let us pray.

  27. Let us pray.

  28. Let us pray.

  29. Let us pray.

  30. Let us pray.

  31. Why the Lord the God is good.

  32. His mercy is forever sure.

  33. His truth at all times turn thee to.

  34. I shall promise to his vengeance.

  35. Let's join our hearts in prayer to God.

  36. Let us pray together.

  37. Gracious God and loving Heavenly Father,

  38. it's our joy and delight this evening

  39. to join our hearts and our voices together

  40. in praise of ye,

  41. your goodness,

  42. your glory,

  43. your greatness.

  44. Father, we delight to join our voices

  45. with your church throughout the earth,

  46. all peoples that on earth do dwell,

  47. who call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

  48. and gather in your presence this Lord's day.

  49. It's our joy and our delight, Father,

  50. to join our voices,

  51. even with the angels in heaven,

  52. gathered around your throne

  53. to be in your presence,

  54. exalted and majestic,

  55. the holy God.

  56. we come to you with praise and adoration,

  57. for truly you are over all.

  58. And yet, Father, we praise you,

  59. we glorify you,

  60. that you have drawn near to us

  61. through your Son,

  62. by your Holy Spirit.

  63. Our Father, we praise you,

  64. that you, by your grace,

  65. have called a people to yourself in Christ.

  66. Christ,

  67. we thank you that you have set

  68. your everlasting love upon us,

  69. that you have put your triune name upon us,

  70. the name of the Father

  71. and of the Son

  72. and of the Holy Spirit.

  73. And you give us strength

  74. and you bless us.

  75. And our Father,

  76. as we gather to you this evening,

  77. we confess that it is only in your strength

  78. and it is only with your blessing

  79. that we can come.

  80. Our Father,

  81. it is only because you have sought

  82. and called us

  83. that we are gathered here.

  84. Lord, we confess that if

  85. our coming before you

  86. depended on our own strength

  87. or will,

  88. our merit,

  89. our works,

  90. our own desire,

  91. oh Lord,

  92. we would not be before you.

  93. We could not stand.

  94. Our Father,

  95. we have proved in countless ways

  96. this past week

  97. how our love for you

  98. has not been with all our heart,

  99. soul, mind, and strength.

  100. Lord, we have not loved

  101. our neighbor as ourselves.

  102. And yet, as we gather to you,

  103. our Father,

  104. we rejoice that you have loved us

  105. from eternity past,

  106. that you have shown your love for us

  107. in this,

  108. that while we were still sinners,

  109. Christ died for us.

  110. And so, Father,

  111. it is not for our own love

  112. that we come,

  113. but for yours.

  114. Forgive us,

  115. we pray,

  116. for what we're not.

  117. Lord,

  118. make us like your Son.

  119. And as we hear your word

  120. and as your spirit

  121. is at work in us tonight,

  122. as we trust,

  123. according to your promise,

  124. that he will be,

  125. that you would conform us

  126. to his image

  127. from one degree of glory

  128. to the next.

  129. Our Father,

  130. be at work in us.

  131. Renew our hearts

  132. that we might love

  133. and worship

  134. and serve you

  135. tonight

  136. and as we go from here

  137. into the coming week.

  138. For we ask in the name

  139. of the crucified

  140. and risen Lord Jesus.

  141. Amen.

  142. Well, we are going to hear

  143. the words of Jesus now

  144. from Matthew's Gospel,

  145. chapter 14,

  146. and reading from page 13.

  147. Matthew, chapter 14.

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  148. We're beginning from verse 13.

  149. Just before this,

  150. we hear of the death

  151. of John the Baptist.

  152. That is what Jesus

  153. is hearing about

  154. in verse 13.

  155. Now, when Jesus heard this,

  156. he withdrew from there

  157. in a boat

  158. to a desolate place

  159. by himself.

  160. But when the crowds heard it,

  161. they followed him

  162. on foot from the towns.

  163. When he went ashore,

  164. he saw a great crowd

  165. and he had compassion on them

  166. and healed their sick.

  167. Now, when it was evening,

  168. the disciples came to him

  169. and said,

  170. this is a desolate place

  171. and the day is now over.

  172. Send the crowds away

  173. to go into the villages

  174. and buy food for themselves.

  175. But Jesus said,

  176. they need not go away.

  177. You give them something to eat.

  178. They said to him,

  179. we have only five loaves here

  180. and two fish.

  181. And he said,

  182. bring them here to me.

  183. Then he ordered the crowds

  184. to sit down on the grass

  185. and taking the five loaves

  186. and the two fish,

  187. he looked up to heaven

  188. and said a blessing.

  189. Then he broke the loaves

  190. and gave them to the disciples

  191. and the disciples

  192. gave them to the crowds

  193. and they all ate

  194. and were satisfied.

  195. And they took up 12 baskets

  196. full of broken pieces left over

  197. and those who ate

  198. were about 5,000 men

  199. besides women and children.

  200. Immediately,

  201. he made the disciples

  202. get into the boat

  203. and go before him

  204. to the other side

  205. while he dismissed the crowds.

  206. And after he dismissed the crowds,

  207. he went up on the mountain

  208. by himself to pray.

  209. When evening came,

  210. he was there alone,

  211. but the boat by this time

  212. was a long way from the land,

  213. beaten by the waves,

  214. for the wind was against them.

  215. And in the fourth watch of the night,

  216. he came to them,

  217. walking on the sea.

  218. But when the disciples

  219. saw him walking on the sea,

  220. they were terrified

  221. and said,

  222. It is a ghost.

  223. And they cried out in fear.

  224. But immediately,

  225. Jesus spoke to them,

  226. saying,

  227. Take heart.

  228. It is I.

  229. Do not be afraid.

  230. And Peter answered him,

  231. Lord, if it is you,

  232. command me to come to you

  233. on the water.

  234. He said,

  235. Come.

  236. So Peter got out of the boat

  237. and walked on the water

  238. and came to Jesus.

  239. But when he saw the wind,

  240. he was afraid.

  241. And beginning to sink,

  242. he cried out,

  243. Lord, save me.

  244. Jesus immediately

  245. reached out his hand

  246. and took hold of him,

  247. saying to him,

  248. O you of little faith,

  249. why did you doubt?

  250. And when they got into the boat,

  251. the wind ceased.

  252. And those in the boat

  253. worshipped him,

  254. saying,

  255. Truly,

  256. you are the Son of God.

  257. And when they crossed over,

  258. they came to land

  259. at Gennesaret.

  260. And when the men of that place

  261. recognized him,

  262. they sent word around

  263. to all that region

  264. and brought to him

  265. all who were sick

  266. and implored him

  267. that they might only touch

  268. the fringe of his garment.

  269. And as many as touched it

  270. were made well.

  271. Amen.

  272. This is God's living

  273. and holy word

  274. and the words

  275. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  276. We'll come back to those verses

  277. later in our service.

  278. But now as we respond

  279. to the reading of God's word,

  280. we're going to sing

  281. from Psalm 77

  282. in Sing Psalms

  283. and verses that speak

  284. of a similar event

  285. in the history of God's people

  286. in the Exodus

  287. and the crossing of the sea.

  288. So we're singing

  289. from Psalm 77

    Psalms 77:13–16

  290. verses 13 to 16

  291. and then 19 to 20.

  292. That's on page 100

  293. of the Psalter.

  294. Sing Psalms

  295. and the tune is Kilmarnock.

  296. Let us stand

  297. to sing together.

  298. Amen.

  299. singing singing

  300. singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing, singing singing, singing, singing singing, singing singing, singing singing, singing singing, singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing singing

  303. The waters of you, O my God

  304. Is so unrightly pain

  305. The Greatest, the King of the

  306. The glass for the rain

  307. The full earth's death of the land

  308. The path of the sea

  309. Your way to the mighty waters

  310. And your good place now to see

  311. Your people like God's long-doubts

  312. Your guide in every day

  313. My God's wisdom, my dear old son

  314. You let them all go away

  315. Let's come again in prayer to God together

  316. Let us pray

  317. Living God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

  318. We bow before you as the God who alone saves

  319. Lord, you are the God of miracles

  320. Looked upon with awe by all the earth

  321. And Lord, as we have just sung and reflected upon

  322. Your mighty works of old

  323. The history of your faithful love towards your people

  324. The keeping of your promises

  325. The rescuing of them

  326. From sin and slavery and death

  327. Our Father, we reflect on your great love for us

  328. In the Lord Jesus Christ

  329. Your Son, our Savior

  330. Who has saved us from sin and darkness

  331. And death through his cross

  332. And his resurrection

  333. Our Father, we thank you that in him

  334. You have provided for us eternal life

  335. The forgiveness of sins

  336. The renewal of our hearts

  337. And the hope of a new creation

  338. Our Father, we thank you that you provide for us

  339. All things that are needed for life and for godliness

  340. Our Father, we thank you for every good gift that you have given us today

  341. Lord, we thank you for every good thing that you grant to us in life

  342. We thank you, Lord, for friendship and for family

  343. For the food that you give us

  344. For the homes that we live in

  345. We thank you for the measure of health that you give us each day

  346. Father, we pray for those among us this evening who are unwell

  347. Perhaps, Lord, confined to their homes

  348. Father, we continue to trust ye for health and wellness

  349. We pray, Lord, that you would grant it to our brothers and sisters

  350. Who struggle with ill health

  351. But, Lord, above all, we pray, Lord, that their trust would be holy in ye

  352. For your timing

  353. For your timing

  354. To know that you are good

  355. That you are kind

  356. And that you are in control

  357. Father, we thank you that you have provided for us a church on earth

  358. Your people, your body here

  359. We thank you, Lord, for this congregation in Stornoway

  360. Lord, we pray that you would continue to uphold your saints here

  361. Lord, continue to strengthen their faith

  362. To grow their love for you and for one another

  363. We pray, Lord, that their witness to the surrounding world would be bright and clear

  364. Father, we pray that you would uphold them particularly in a time of vacancy

  365. Father, we thank you for Callum

  366. And, Lord, we pray that you would continue to minister to your people through him

  367. Lord, we thank you for the Kirk session

  368. Lord, we thank you for the Kirk session, for the vacancy committee

  369. And, Lord, we pray that you would grant wisdom

  370. Lord, we trust that you would call the right man to come to minister here alongside Callum

  371. Lord, we continue to seek you for that

  372. And, Lord, we pray across the island and across our church

  373. That you would continue to raise up workers for the harvest field

  374. Lord, you told us on earth that the harvest is plentiful

  375. But the workers are few

  376. And you instructed us to continue to pray to the Lord of the harvest

  377. To send out workers

  378. And so we do, Lord, we implore you

  379. And we pray, Lord, that you would raise up godly men

  380. For ordained pastoral ministry

  381. Godly men and women, Lord, to engage in evangelism

  382. And pastoral care

  383. And good works

  384. Strengthen and equip your church, we pray

  385. Father, we pray and thank you for the youth conference that has taken place, Lord, over these past few days

  386. Lord, we thank you for the blessing that they have known

  387. And pray that the teaching that the young people have received from Andy

  388. And from others, Lord, would bear fruit in their young lives

  389. Father, we pray that friendships would be formed and strengthened as a result of this past weekend

  390. Among them that would support them in their walk with you through their lives

  391. Father, we pray that you would raise up and strengthen a generation of Christians, Lord, in our land

  392. Who are bold in their testimony

  393. And in their living for you, Lord

  394. In a world

  395. That is so hostile to you and your Christ and your word

  396. Lord, we pray for those who attended, Lord

  397. And all those who didn't

  398. Who were young

  399. And that you would help them, Lord

  400. To remember their Creator

  401. In the days of their youth

  402. Our Father, further afield, we pray for your people in parts of the world where they suffer

  403. At persecution and hardship that we can barely imagine

  404. Lord, we pray for your church this evening in Myanmar

  405. Lord, we pray that you would strengthen your people there

  406. Lord, we pray that in your infinite wisdom and justice and mercy

  407. That you would bring an end to the conflict that is there

  408. Father, we pray that you would relieve all the people of that land from war

  409. But Lord, particularly we pray that you would keep your church and guard and protect your people

  410. Lord, we pray that in a divided country that their unity and peace would shine

  411. That their witness to the gospel would remain pure

  412. And that your church there would grow in number and in maturity

  413. Lord, keep your people there, we pray

  414. Father, as your word instructs us to do, we remember this evening

  415. Kings and all those in high places

  416. Lord, we are so aware that our world is unstable

  417. Lord, your word also tells us that the heart of a king is like water in your hands

  418. That you turn whichever way you would

  419. And so, our Father, we pray that you would turn the hearts of those whom you have set in authority over us

  420. To wisdom and peace and justice

  421. Father, we pray that as world leaders take great decisions

  422. Great decisions

  423. That they would be conscious of the importance, Lord, that they have and their standing before you

  424. That they are accountable to you, the God of heaven

  425. Lord, we trust that even in an uncertain time that you are unfolding your eternal plan

  426. For the good of your people and for your glory

  427. Lord, we pray that you would help us to set our hope on the coming again of Jesus

  428. Lord, in your mercy, we pray that there would be peace in our time

  429. But more than that, Lord, we know that there will be peace and renewal

  430. And an end of sickness and suffering and death with the return of the Lord Jesus

  431. And so we pray with your people throughout the ages and across the world

  432. Come, Lord Jesus

  433. Come soon

  434. For we pray and ask in your name

  435. Amen

  436. Well, as we prepare to come back to Matthew's Gospel

  437. We're going to sing from Psalm 93

  438. From Sing Psalms

  439. And the whole psalm

  440. Again, reflecting in God's almighty power over the chaotic waters of darkness

  441. And the power of his voice

  442. It's on page 123

  443. In Sing Psalms

  444. Let us stand again to sing God's praise

  445. Let us pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray pray and pray and pray pray and pray pray and pray and pray pray and pray pray and pray pray and pray pray and pray pray and pray

  459. To royal statues, Lord, stand firm, and changing is your word.

  460. And holiness adores your love, our endless creation, Lord.

  461. Wonderful. Well, if you would please have that passage of Matthew's Gospel open, that would be most helpful as we work our way through it this evening.

  462. And more helpful even than that will be to pray for the Lord's help and that he would speak to us. Let's do that together.

  463. Our Father, we thank you for your precious word. It is unchanging, it is sure, the very word by which you created the earth and the stars and the heavens.

  464. Lord, humble our hearts this evening, we pray, as we bow before you and listen to your word.

  465. Speak, O Lord, for your servants are listening. In Jesus' name, amen.

  466. Well, I wonder, what kind of rescue do you think we need?

  467. What comes to mind when I say the word rescue?

  468. Now, at home, we have toddlers, a three-year-old and a two-year-old.

  469. So, I won't lie, what comes to mind when I say the word rescue?

  470. For me, in our house is Paw Patrol.

  471. Perhaps some of you have watched an episode or two or three or four or five of Paw Patrol.

  472. If you haven't seen it, no worries.

  473. Every episode is exactly the same.

  474. All is well in Adventure Bay.

  475. And then mild peril strikes.

  476. Ryder summons the pups to the pup tower.

  477. They get a breakdown of what has gone wrong.

  478. And once they have worked out what kind of problem it is that they have to solve,

  479. they then need to work out which pups with which special skills, special tools will be needed

  480. to save the day.

  481. Who will do the rescue?

  482. Now, I won't spoil it.

  483. Every episode is the same.

  484. They succeed in the rescue.

  485. But what do we think of when we think of the word rescue?

  486. What kind of rescue do you think that we need?

  487. Of course, we face far more serious situations in life than ever visit the people of Adventure Bay.

  488. Wars.

  489. Terminal illness.

  490. Natural disasters.

  491. Relationship breakdown.

  492. Sexual violence.

  493. We could go on.

  494. What kind of rescue do you think we need?

  495. And what do we need to do about it?

  496. We're coming to a section of Matthew's Gospel this evening where Matthew wants us as learners of Jesus

  497. to learn what kind of rescue King Jesus came to bring and how we need to respond.

  498. So far in the Gospel, if we'd read up to this point, we have seen something of what King Jesus came to do.

  499. He has been bringing God's kingdom into the world.

  500. That is God's good and loving rule to bear on people's lives.

  501. We've seen that through the countless healings that he's performed.

  502. Our reading tonight is topped and tailed with even more as King Jesus brings, restores something of the wholeness to people

  503. that God created us for in the beginning.

  504. But he has brought God's kingdom all the more through his word, through his teaching.

  505. And so in this Gospel, we have had up to this point three big sermons, three teaching blocks,

  506. where Jesus has set his people, and to some extent the wider crowd, straight on what God's kingdom is and how we live in it.

  507. And we've seen different responses.

  508. Some have heard Jesus' message of God's kingdom, and they have bowed before him.

  509. They've taken the crown off their own heads.

  510. They've given it to him.

  511. They have recognized him as Lord and Christ and Savior.

  512. And they have turned and begun to live in God's kingdom.

  513. They have followed King Jesus.

  514. Many, though, have heard him and have either misunderstood what he has said,

  515. or they've only partly got what he has said.

  516. And of those who have only got part of what he said, some even then haven't liked what Jesus has said.

  517. So the religious leaders, the Pharisees, the scribes, have called him, no less, the prince of demons,

  518. and begun already to plot his death.

  519. So now we've had a chance to see and to respond to something of what King Jesus has come to do.

  520. It's time to see more.

  521. This is a new chapter in the gospel, a new chapter in Jesus' ministry,

  522. because now Jesus decides it's the time to reveal the rescue plan to his people.

  523. Jesus to the rescue.

  524. So what kind of rescue is it?

  525. And what do we need to do about it?

  526. Two points this evening.

  527. Firstly, then, let us see that King Jesus has come to Exodus rescue us.

  528. Now, our reading from Matthew, it's one of these chapters, isn't it,

  529. that shows that we know our Bibles both too well and not well enough.

  530. Right?

  531. We heard that chapter, didn't we?

  532. And we thought together, we know this.

  533. I reckon we could go out on the street this evening,

  534. we could ask people about Jesus walking on the water, feeding the 5,000,

  535. and they would know what we were talking about.

  536. We know these chapters of the Bible, don't we, too well.

  537. But like so many things in the Bible, we think we don't need to hear again.

  538. It turns out that's because actually, perhaps, perhaps,

  539. we don't know our Bibles well enough.

  540. See, how many of us, I wonder, as we read, thought,

  541. well, this is a big chapter.

  542. Why don't we break it down?

  543. Right?

  544. Can't he see the headings?

  545. It says, doesn't it, Jesus feeds the 5,000,

  546. Jesus walks on the water.

  547. Slow down!

  548. Why are we going so quickly?

  549. But it's only when we put it together

  550. that we begin to see what is going on.

  551. So, let me tell you this story

  552. in a different way

  553. and see if we can see.

  554. Let me tell you from the end,

  555. working backwards,

  556. and tell me what you see.

  557. The Lord's people worship him.

  558. They cry out to him to save them.

  559. They are terrified,

  560. but he brings them safely through the sea.

  561. He goes up on a mountain.

  562. In the wilderness, they are hungry.

  563. In his compassion,

  564. he feeds them with bread from heaven.

  565. Now, if I asked you,

  566. what part of the Bible does that come from,

  567. what would you say?

  568. Where would you take me?

  569. Through the sea,

  570. up a mountain,

  571. in the wilderness,

  572. where they eat miracle bread.

  573. That is the Exodus, isn't it?

  574. It's the Exodus.

  575. Specifically, it's the Exodus rescue.

  576. God hits Egypt with 10 plagues,

  577. 10 strikes.

  578. After the tent,

  579. his people are set free.

  580. He brings them safely out.

  581. Across the sea,

  582. he gathers them to himself,

  583. makes them his own,

  584. and lovingly feeds them

  585. with bread from heaven on the way.

  586. Now, what Jesus does here,

  587. and what Matthew wants us to see,

  588. is that Jesus is recreating

  589. the Exodus rescue.

  590. Just see that with me in the text.

  591. Verse 13,

  592. Jesus goes out to the wilderness,

  593. and a crowd comes to him.

  594. Soon, the question of food comes up.

  595. His disciples say,

  596. literally, the word they use,

  597. this is a wilderness.

  598. Send the crowds away

  599. to go and buy food for themselves.

  600. What are we going to eat, Lord?

  601. Now, the target audience here

  602. is the disciples.

  603. Okay, we've seen this before

  604. in Matthew,

  605. the Sermon on the Mount.

  606. For example,

  607. the crowds are all around him,

  608. but before him,

  609. close up,

  610. he's got the 12,

  611. the disciples.

  612. Jesus wants them,

  613. particularly,

  614. to see what he's going to do.

  615. So he says to the disciples,

  616. verse 16,

  617. they need not go away,

  618. you give them something to eat.

  619. And straight away,

  620. this has all become

  621. a lot more personal,

  622. hasn't it?

  623. It's a bit like,

  624. perhaps,

  625. you've said,

  626. oh, so-and-so's here,

  627. they need a lift.

  628. And somebody said,

  629. well, can't you take them?

  630. Right, suddenly,

  631. the problem has become

  632. your problem.

  633. Jesus does that

  634. to the disciples,

  635. I think not because

  636. he's really expecting them

  637. to feed the crowds,

  638. but so that they'll recognize

  639. that he is going to do something

  640. that they have no power to do.

  641. Hence,

  642. when they say,

  643. when we have five loaves

  644. and two fish,

  645. Jesus says not,

  646. he doesn't say,

  647. does he just start

  648. giving them out?

  649. He says,

  650. bring them here

  651. to me.

  652. Significantly,

  653. he looks up

  654. to heaven,

  655. where the manna came from,

  656. the bread from heaven.

  657. He says a blessing

  658. and gives it back

  659. to the disciples

  660. to distribute.

  661. Then we read,

  662. the disciples gave it

  663. to the crowds

  664. and they all ate

  665. and were satisfied.

  666. Not only that,

  667. they took up

  668. twelve baskets

  669. full of broken pieces

  670. left over,

  671. that is,

  672. the number of tribes

  673. in the wilderness,

  674. and those who ate

  675. were about five thousand men

  676. besides women

  677. and children.

  678. So,

  679. the heading in your Bible,

  680. which is not inspired,

  681. says Jesus feeds

  682. the five thousand,

  683. which is wrong,

  684. isn't it?

  685. Jesus feeds

  686. the fifteen to twenty thousand,

  687. five thousand men plus,

  688. women and children.

  689. Now,

  690. if you were those disciples,

  691. what would you be thinking

  692. at this point?

  693. Who can do stuff like this?

  694. Feed thousands of people

  695. in a desert

  696. where there is no food?

  697. food.

  698. And this wasn't just like

  699. passing around the loaf

  700. at communion

  701. or taking the wee

  702. bits of bread.

  703. No,

  704. these people

  705. ate to the full.

  706. They were satisfied.

  707. They were filled

  708. and then some.

  709. With our own hands,

  710. we gave him

  711. five loaves

  712. and two fish.

  713. And with our own hands,

  714. we gave out

  715. enough food

  716. to feed

  717. five thousand

  718. men plus

  719. women and children

  720. and then some.

  721. What happened

  722. in between?

  723. Well,

  724. he did.

  725. Jesus happened.

  726. We tell the story

  727. of the bread from heaven

  728. every year,

  729. they would say,

  730. but now we're living it

  731. because of Jesus.

  732. Then once everyone's eaten,

  733. Jesus sends them away

  734. on a boat

  735. while the crowds

  736. trickle away.

  737. And at verse 23,

  738. after he's dismissed

  739. the crowds,

  740. he went up on a mountain

  741. by himself

  742. to pray.

  743. Now,

  744. given the disciples

  745. aren't there

  746. at this point,

  747. this is for Jesus

  748. and for us,

  749. isn't it?

  750. It's for Jesus.

  751. That's why he went

  752. into the wilderness

  753. in the first place,

  754. to have that time

  755. by himself

  756. with his father.

  757. Only at this point

  758. does he actually

  759. get that time.

  760. But it's written here

  761. for us

  762. so that we get

  763. another piece

  764. of the big picture

  765. because after they've

  766. been fed in the wilderness,

  767. where do the people go?

  768. Well,

  769. to the mountain

  770. where Moses goes up

  771. by himself

  772. to pray to God

  773. and meet with him

  774. on the mountain

  775. before coming down

  776. and Jesus crosses

  777. the sea

  778. to meet his disciples

  779. in the boats,

  780. which was a long way

  781. from the land

  782. beaten by the waves

  783. so the wind

  784. was against them.

  785. Now,

  786. perhaps you're thinking

  787. the sea does not,

  788. does it,

  789. at this point,

  790. split open for him

  791. to walk through

  792. on dry land,

  793. okay?

  794. But when Moses

  795. raised his staff

  796. over the sea,

  797. it says,

  798. all that night

  799. the Lord drove

  800. the sea back

  801. with a strong

  802. east wind

  803. and turned it

  804. into dry land

  805. and the people

  806. walked through the sea.

  807. Well,

  808. now,

  809. on another windy night,

  810. Jesus walks

  811. through the sea,

  812. across the water,

  813. as if on dry land,

  814. he came to them

  815. walking

  816. on the sea.

  817. and then his people

  818. do too.

  819. Lord,

  820. if it is you,

  821. asks Peter,

  822. command me

  823. to come to you

  824. on the water.

  825. Come on,

  826. Peter.

  827. So Peter

  828. got out of the boat

  829. and walked on the water

  830. and came to Jesus.

  831. I take it like

  832. giving them the bread

  833. and the fish.

  834. This is because

  835. Jesus wants

  836. the disciples

  837. to experience

  838. his power

  839. up close

  840. and personal.

  841. Their need,

  842. his power

  843. at work.

  844. And right on key,

  845. as he begins

  846. to sing,

  847. Peter cried out,

  848. verse 30,

  849. Lord,

  850. save me.

  851. Lord,

  852. save me.

  853. Immediately,

  854. we read,

  855. the Lord Jesus

  856. reached out his hand,

  857. took hold of Peter,

  858. and when they got

  859. into the boat,

  860. the wind ceased.

  861. The Lord

  862. saves his people

  863. by bringing them

  864. safely through

  865. the sea.

  866. And the final

  867. piece of the puzzle,

  868. if we need it,

  869. is there in verse 33,

  870. those in the boat

  871. worshipped him,

  872. saying,

  873. truly you are

  874. the Son of God.

  875. Again,

  876. who can do this?

  877. Right?

  878. Only one who's

  879. worthy of praise

  880. and worship,

  881. the Lord,

  882. Jesus,

  883. the Son of God,

  884. the Christ,

  885. the Son of God.

  886. Now,

  887. each bit of that story

  888. is an amazing miracle

  889. in its own right,

  890. isn't it?

  891. But I think,

  892. put it together,

  893. and the point

  894. is simply incredible.

  895. That Jesus is the God

  896. of the Exodus,

  897. and,

  898. still better,

  899. that he has come

  900. to do another

  901. Exodus rescue.

  902. I take it that

  903. these miracles

  904. are not recorded

  905. for us in this

  906. chapter of Matthew

  907. simply to reinforce

  908. that Jesus is God.

  909. He is God.

  910. But Matthew

  911. has made that point

  912. before.

  913. He's shown us that.

  914. We know that.

  915. Why show us

  916. that Jesus

  917. can recreate

  918. the Exodus

  919. rescue?

  920. well,

  921. because,

  922. friends,

  923. that is the kind

  924. of rescue

  925. that we need,

  926. and so it is

  927. the kind of rescue

  928. that he has come

  929. to bring.

  930. Think about it.

  931. What would be the problem

  932. with Jesus

  933. simply bringing

  934. God's kingdom

  935. into the world

  936. and calling us

  937. into it?

  938. What would still

  939. not happen?

  940. What could we

  941. not do?

  942. Why would we

  943. not come?

  944. Well,

  945. what's holding

  946. us back?

  947. It's that we

  948. are captives

  949. in a kingdom

  950. of darkness.

  951. It's that we

  952. are slaves

  953. of sin

  954. and death.

  955. We live out

  956. our days

  957. under the shadow

  958. of death,

  959. and like the

  960. Israelites in

  961. Egypt,

  962. we cannot just

  963. go when we

  964. please.

  965. The kingdom

  966. of darkness

  967. will fight

  968. tooth and nail

  969. to hold

  970. onto us.

  971. The devil

  972. will work

  973. us to death

  974. in his service,

  975. and like

  976. Pharaoh,

  977. the actual

  978. prince of

  979. this world

  980. will not

  981. let his

  982. people go.

  983. So what

  984. point would

  985. there be

  986. in Jesus

  987. calling us

  988. into his

  989. kingdom

  990. if we

  991. can't

  992. come?

  993. Friends,

  994. this chapter

  995. of Matthew

  996. reminds us

  997. that Jesus

  998. is not

  999. a helpless

  1000. salesman

  1001. pitching us

  1002. his wares,

  1003. selling us

  1004. his stuff,

  1005. hoping

  1006. hoping

  1007. that we

  1008. will buy.

  1009. And we

  1010. are not

  1011. smart

  1012. consumers

  1013. weighing

  1014. up our

  1015. options.

  1016. What's

  1017. best for

  1018. me?

  1019. What's

  1020. the best

  1021. deal

  1022. in life?

  1023. No,

  1024. we are

  1025. slaves in

  1026. a kingdom

  1027. of darkness.

  1028. darkness.

  1029. And here

  1030. is the

  1031. good news

  1032. of the

  1033. gospel,

  1034. that King

  1035. Jesus

  1036. has come

  1037. to pound

  1038. the kingdom

  1039. of darkness

  1040. until it

  1041. lets us

  1042. go,

  1043. to set

  1044. our hearts

  1045. free,

  1046. to live

  1047. under his

  1048. wise and

  1049. loving and

  1050. compassionate

  1051. rule in

  1052. his kingdom.

  1053. In other

  1054. words,

  1055. he has come

  1056. to exodus,

  1057. rescue us,

  1058. because that

  1059. is the rescue

  1060. that we

  1061. need.

  1062. there are

  1063. lots of

  1064. things wrong

  1065. in the

  1066. world,

  1067. aren't

  1068. there?

  1069. In the

  1070. news this

  1071. week,

  1072. wars,

  1073. diplomatic

  1074. breakdown,

  1075. corruption,

  1076. rescues

  1077. are needed.

  1078. But what

  1079. is the

  1080. problem behind

  1081. those problems?

  1082. Well,

  1083. it is the

  1084. fact that by

  1085. nature we

  1086. belong to a

  1087. kingdom of

  1088. darkness,

  1089. and we

  1090. serve its

  1091. interests,

  1092. and we

  1093. obey its

  1094. rules.

  1095. We are

  1096. born as

  1097. slaves in

  1098. an empire

  1099. of evil.

  1100. Friends,

  1101. we suffer

  1102. from the

  1103. mother of

  1104. all problems.

  1105. But the

  1106. gospel tells

  1107. us that

  1108. Jesus came

  1109. to rescue

  1110. us from

  1111. the mother

  1112. of all

  1113. problems.

  1114. He's come

  1115. to break

  1116. us out of

  1117. slavery to

  1118. darkness,

  1119. set our

  1120. hearts free

  1121. to serve a

  1122. better master,

  1123. the God who

  1124. created us,

  1125. who knows

  1126. us,

  1127. who loves

  1128. us.

  1129. That is the

  1130. rescue that

  1131. we desperately

  1132. need, and

  1133. is what he

  1134. came to

  1135. do.

  1136. He has

  1137. come to

  1138. exodus,

  1139. rescue us.

  1140. what kind of

  1141. rescue do you

  1142. think you

  1143. need?

  1144. What kind of

  1145. rescue do you

  1146. think our

  1147. world needs?

  1148. The story of

  1149. the Bible is

  1150. so much bigger

  1151. than we think,

  1152. isn't it?

  1153. Jesus' work,

  1154. God's rescue,

  1155. it is so much

  1156. deeper,

  1157. better,

  1158. longer lasting

  1159. than we dare

  1160. even to

  1161. imagine.

  1162. And so what

  1163. do we need to

  1164. do about it?

  1165. Friends, this is

  1166. the rescue Jesus

  1167. has come to

  1168. do.

  1169. So secondly,

  1170. trust him with

  1171. your rescue.

  1172. This is the

  1173. second of our

  1174. two points

  1175. tonight.

  1176. Trust him

  1177. with your

  1178. rescue.

  1179. And now we're

  1180. not told what

  1181. the disciples

  1182. talked about

  1183. after Jesus

  1184. had fed us

  1185. a small town

  1186. with bread

  1187. and fish,

  1188. but over the

  1189. page in

  1190. chapter 16,

  1191. we find out

  1192. they didn't

  1193. really get

  1194. it.

  1195. In another

  1196. boat,

  1197. they find

  1198. they haven't

  1199. bought any

  1200. bread.

  1201. Jesus says

  1202. to them,

  1203. oh, you

  1204. of little

  1205. faith,

  1206. why are you

  1207. discussing

  1208. among yourselves

  1209. the fact

  1210. that you

  1211. have no

  1212. bread?

  1213. Do you

  1214. not yet

  1215. perceive?

  1216. Do you

  1217. not remember

  1218. the five

  1219. loaves for

  1220. the 5,000

  1221. and how many

  1222. baskets you

  1223. gathered?

  1224. The miracle

  1225. has gone

  1226. straight over

  1227. their heads.

  1228. But the

  1229. drumbeat

  1230. of these

  1231. chapters

  1232. is not,

  1233. oh, you

  1234. of little

  1235. intelligence,

  1236. you of

  1237. little

  1238. IQ,

  1239. it is

  1240. you of

  1241. little

  1242. faith.

  1243. He's going

  1244. to say that

  1245. three times

  1246. in the next

  1247. four chapters

  1248. because their

  1249. problem is

  1250. not up here

  1251. that they're

  1252. not clever

  1253. enough to

  1254. piece the

  1255. pieces together,

  1256. it is in

  1257. here that

  1258. they do

  1259. not trust

  1260. him to

  1261. properly be

  1262. their

  1263. rescuer.

  1264. that's

  1265. what the

  1266. scene with

  1267. Peter nearly

  1268. drowning

  1269. is about.

  1270. Again, it's

  1271. so well

  1272. known it's

  1273. lost its

  1274. impact on

  1275. many of

  1276. us.

  1277. We think

  1278. coming to

  1279. this passage

  1280. that Jesus

  1281. perhaps is

  1282. being a bit

  1283. harsh on

  1284. Peter.

  1285. How many

  1286. of us have

  1287. walked on

  1288. water?

  1289. It was a

  1290. stormy

  1291. night.

  1292. Peter

  1293. probably

  1294. couldn't

  1295. swim.

  1296. Is Jesus

  1297. just being

  1298. the strict

  1299. teacher

  1300. with a

  1301. standard

  1302. that's

  1303. impossible

  1304. to meet?

  1305. Well, no.

  1306. Think about

  1307. the rescue

  1308. Peter is

  1309. part of.

  1310. It's as if

  1311. he and the

  1312. other disciples

  1313. have been

  1314. taken back

  1315. in time.

  1316. They're

  1317. reliving

  1318. the greatest

  1319. rescue story

  1320. in the

  1321. world.

  1322. The Exodus

  1323. rescue was

  1324. their history

  1325. and heritage,

  1326. but that

  1327. day it

  1328. became their

  1329. lived

  1330. experience.

  1331. They'd

  1332. put a

  1333. small

  1334. lunch

  1335. into

  1336. Jesus'

  1337. hands

  1338. and they

  1339. have

  1340. given

  1341. back

  1342. out

  1343. supermarkets

  1344. worth of

  1345. food to

  1346. people.

  1347. They've

  1348. been

  1349. struggling

  1350. across the

  1351. sea.

  1352. Jesus

  1353. simply

  1354. walked up

  1355. to them

  1356. on the

  1357. water.

  1358. And

  1359. Peter

  1360. gets

  1361. something,

  1362. doesn't

  1363. he?

  1364. Something

  1365. of what's

  1366. going on.

  1367. Lord,

  1368. if it

  1369. is you,

  1370. he says,

  1371. command me

  1372. to come

  1373. to you

  1374. on the

  1375. water.

  1376. He

  1377. wants

  1378. to live

  1379. it.

  1380. He

  1381. wants

  1382. to grasp

  1383. it for

  1384. it all

  1385. to be

  1386. true

  1387. and real

  1388. for

  1389. him.

  1390. And

  1391. so he

  1392. gets out

  1393. of the

  1394. boat.

  1395. And he

  1396. rests his

  1397. feet on

  1398. the water

  1399. trusting that

  1400. it will

  1401. hold his

  1402. weight simply

  1403. because Jesus

  1404. has said

  1405. it will.

  1406. There is

  1407. real faith

  1408. there,

  1409. isn't there?

  1410. But what

  1411. kind of

  1412. faith is

  1413. it?

  1414. We asked

  1415. before,

  1416. what kind

  1417. of rescue?

  1418. Not all

  1419. rescues are

  1420. equal,

  1421. are they?

  1422. we

  1423. not only

  1424. have two

  1425. small

  1426. children,

  1427. we also

  1428. have a

  1429. small

  1430. dog.

  1431. One

  1432. very

  1433. stormy

  1434. night,

  1435. we took

  1436. the dog

  1437. for a

  1438. walk,

  1439. and a

  1440. different

  1441. dog

  1442. actually

  1443. followed

  1444. us

  1445. home

  1446. that

  1447. had

  1448. lost

  1449. its

  1450. owner.

  1451. And

  1452. thankfully,

  1453. the dog

  1454. had a

  1455. tag,

  1456. we phoned

  1457. the number

  1458. on it,

  1459. the owner

  1460. came 20

  1461. minutes

  1462. later,

  1463. he was

  1464. very

  1465. grateful,

  1466. he took

  1467. his dog

  1468. home,

  1469. but you

  1470. know what,

  1471. we've never

  1472. seen him

  1473. again,

  1474. we didn't

  1475. get a

  1476. card or

  1477. flowers or

  1478. anything,

  1479. because it's

  1480. not like

  1481. we performed

  1482. CPR on

  1483. somebody in

  1484. his family,

  1485. or saved

  1486. one of his

  1487. children from

  1488. being run

  1489. over,

  1490. the response

  1491. is proportionate

  1492. to the

  1493. rescue,

  1494. isn't it?

  1495. The bigger

  1496. the rescue,

  1497. the deeper

  1498. the response.

  1499. Jesus didn't

  1500. just tell

  1501. Peter to

  1502. walk on

  1503. the water,

  1504. did he?

  1505. He also

  1506. said as he

  1507. stood on

  1508. the water,

  1509. verse 27,

  1510. take heart,

  1511. it is I,

  1512. don't be

  1513. afraid,

  1514. don't be

  1515. afraid,

  1516. but what

  1517. happens?

  1518. Peter got

  1519. out of the

  1520. boat,

  1521. walked on

  1522. the water

  1523. and came

  1524. to Jesus,

  1525. but when

  1526. he saw

  1527. the wind,

  1528. he was

  1529. afraid.

  1530. Is that

  1531. a proportionate

  1532. response to

  1533. the rescue

  1534. that Jesus

  1535. is doing?

  1536. What kind

  1537. of faith

  1538. does Peter

  1539. have here?

  1540. Half a

  1541. faith.

  1542. Faith in

  1543. some of

  1544. what Jesus

  1545. has said

  1546. and done,

  1547. not faith

  1548. in the

  1549. rest.

  1550. And that

  1551. is not

  1552. a proportionate

  1553. response,

  1554. is it,

  1555. to someone

  1556. who is

  1557. doing what

  1558. Jesus is

  1559. doing.

  1560. It's not

  1561. a big enough

  1562. response to

  1563. the biggest

  1564. rescue that

  1565. Jesus is

  1566. showing that

  1567. he has come

  1568. to do.

  1569. of course,

  1570. the point of

  1571. the original

  1572. Exodus rescue

  1573. is that

  1574. God's

  1575. people did

  1576. cross the

  1577. sea to

  1578. safety,

  1579. but Peter

  1580. very nearly

  1581. suffers the

  1582. fate of

  1583. the Egyptians

  1584. being swallowed

  1585. by the

  1586. waves.

  1587. Why?

  1588. Well,

  1589. because he

  1590. didn't trust

  1591. Jesus not

  1592. to be afraid

  1593. when Jesus

  1594. told him

  1595. there was

  1596. nothing to

  1597. be afraid

  1598. of.

  1599. He trusted

  1600. Jesus enough,

  1601. didn't he,

  1602. to obey some

  1603. of his words,

  1604. come to me,

  1605. but not the

  1606. rest of his

  1607. words,

  1608. have no fear.

  1609. And friends,

  1610. the rest of

  1611. these chapters

  1612. in this section,

  1613. they're here to

  1614. show us that

  1615. more than

  1616. anything,

  1617. that is what

  1618. we need to be

  1619. rescued from.

  1620. little faith,

  1621. little faith,

  1622. unbelief,

  1623. a heart that

  1624. has one foot

  1625. in the kingdom

  1626. of heaven,

  1627. but one foot

  1628. still trapped

  1629. in the kingdom

  1630. of darkness,

  1631. a heart that

  1632. on its own

  1633. cannot trust

  1634. Jesus all the

  1635. way,

  1636. even if we

  1637. wanted to,

  1638. which is why

  1639. Peter is

  1640. an uncomfortably

  1641. unclear mirror,

  1642. isn't he,

  1643. for us to

  1644. look into.

  1645. In some ways,

  1646. we should want

  1647. to be more

  1648. like him,

  1649. in other

  1650. ways,

  1651. we are far

  1652. too much

  1653. like him.

  1654. But when

  1655. he's really

  1656. pushed,

  1657. as he's

  1658. sinking and

  1659. he's going

  1660. to drown,

  1661. he cries

  1662. out,

  1663. doesn't he,

  1664. the most

  1665. important words

  1666. that anyone

  1667. could ever

  1668. say to

  1669. the Lord

  1670. Jesus,

  1671. Lord,

  1672. save me,

  1673. Lord,

  1674. save me.

  1675. If his

  1676. first stumbling

  1677. steps of

  1678. faith were

  1679. weak,

  1680. what he

  1681. says when

  1682. he stumbles

  1683. shows a

  1684. faith that

  1685. is big

  1686. enough for

  1687. the rescue

  1688. that Jesus

  1689. is bringing.

  1690. And that

  1691. can be true

  1692. for us as

  1693. well,

  1694. can't it?

  1695. Perhaps you

  1696. can relate to

  1697. Peter here.

  1698. If things

  1699. feel like

  1700. they're getting

  1701. harder for

  1702. you,

  1703. like temptation

  1704. is getting

  1705. worse,

  1706. doubts,

  1707. or doubts

  1708. are growing

  1709. stronger,

  1710. or perhaps

  1711. just the

  1712. pressure to

  1713. conform to

  1714. a worldly

  1715. lifestyle,

  1716. a way of

  1717. thinking,

  1718. is getting

  1719. tougher,

  1720. or just

  1721. generally

  1722. situations in

  1723. life that

  1724. are getting

  1725. harder,

  1726. or just not

  1727. getting better,

  1728. and the longer

  1729. we have to

  1730. carry it,

  1731. the tougher

  1732. it gets,

  1733. and you feel

  1734. like you're

  1735. sinking and

  1736. you're going

  1737. to drown,

  1738. well,

  1739. it's at that

  1740. point,

  1741. isn't it,

  1742. that our

  1743. need becomes

  1744. clearest,

  1745. and therefore

  1746. our faith in

  1747. Jesus grows

  1748. deepest.

  1749. Before we

  1750. could walk

  1751. on water,

  1752. now we're

  1753. sinking and

  1754. we can't

  1755. help but

  1756. cry out to

  1757. Jesus,

  1758. Lord,

  1759. save me.

  1760. Well,

  1761. friends,

  1762. let me say

  1763. that that is

  1764. where Jesus

  1765. would rather

  1766. have us

  1767. than going

  1768. through life

  1769. only half

  1770. trusting in

  1771. him,

  1772. but half

  1773. relying on

  1774. us.

  1775. A full-throated,

  1776. whole-hearted,

  1777. desperate trust

  1778. in him to

  1779. save us

  1780. rather than

  1781. a halfway

  1782. faith that

  1783. secretly fears

  1784. that we

  1785. won't make

  1786. it.

  1787. If you're

  1788. here tonight

  1789. and you

  1790. feel like

  1791. you're sinking

  1792. or going

  1793. to drown,

  1794. you only

  1795. need cry

  1796. to Jesus

  1797. to save

  1798. you,

  1799. and what

  1800. will he

  1801. do?

  1802. Just see

  1803. in verse

  1804. 31,

  1805. Jesus

  1806. immediately

  1807. reached out

  1808. his hand

  1809. and took

  1810. hold of

  1811. him.

  1812. He was

  1813. waiting for

  1814. Peter to

  1815. say the

  1816. words,

  1817. but no

  1818. longer than

  1819. that,

  1820. right?

  1821. Immediately

  1822. he reached

  1823. out his

  1824. hand and

  1825. saved him.

  1826. Friends,

  1827. you say

  1828. the word

  1829. and Jesus

  1830. will immediately

  1831. reach out

  1832. and take

  1833. hold of

  1834. you in

  1835. all his

  1836. compassion

  1837. and power

  1838. to save

  1839. you from

  1840. sinking

  1841. and drowning

  1842. in fear,

  1843. judgment,

  1844. and death.

  1845. And perhaps

  1846. for some

  1847. of you,

  1848. you've

  1849. never done

  1850. that in

  1851. your life,

  1852. you've

  1853. never prayed

  1854. that prayer

  1855. in your

  1856. heart or

  1857. said those

  1858. words with

  1859. your mouth

  1860. to the

  1861. Lord Jesus.

  1862. Let me

  1863. say with all

  1864. the tenderness

  1865. in the world

  1866. that if that

  1867. is you,

  1868. this is where

  1869. you are

  1870. tonight,

  1871. sinking and

  1872. drowning,

  1873. not only in

  1874. life,

  1875. in busyness

  1876. and stress,

  1877. but one

  1878. day into

  1879. death and

  1880. condemnation

  1881. and hell.

  1882. Friend,

  1883. you need

  1884. only say

  1885. the word

  1886. to Jesus,

  1887. cry out

  1888. to him,

  1889. these three

  1890. simple words,

  1891. Lord,

  1892. save me,

  1893. and immediately

  1894. he will.

  1895. Immediately

  1896. he will.

  1897. Not before

  1898. you ask,

  1899. but at the

  1900. very moment

  1901. that you

  1902. ask,

  1903. he will

  1904. immediately

  1905. save you.

  1906. If that's

  1907. you,

  1908. don't hold

  1909. back,

  1910. cry out

  1911. to him,

  1912. pray that

  1913. prayer,

  1914. speak to

  1915. somebody

  1916. after the

  1917. service,

  1918. Lord,

  1919. save me.

  1920. But really

  1921. as we come

  1922. into close,

  1923. the challenge

  1924. of these

  1925. verses is

  1926. for those

  1927. of us

  1928. who are

  1929. Jesus'

  1930. disciples,

  1931. who are

  1932. Christians,

  1933. because even

  1934. if Jesus

  1935. were rather

  1936. that we

  1937. were at

  1938. the end

  1939. of ourselves

  1940. rather than

  1941. half trusting

  1942. in him,

  1943. he would

  1944. still rather,

  1945. wouldn't he,

  1946. that we

  1947. didn't have

  1948. to get to

  1949. that point

  1950. before we

  1951. trusted fully

  1952. in him.

  1953. Hence,

  1954. here's the

  1955. twist,

  1956. Jesus doesn't

  1957. commend Peter

  1958. for his

  1959. faith,

  1960. does he?

  1961. But actually

  1962. says,

  1963. verse 31,

  1964. oh you

  1965. of little

  1966. faith,

  1967. why did

  1968. you doubt?

  1969. think about

  1970. it,

  1971. it's a bit

  1972. of a

  1973. functional

  1974. faith,

  1975. isn't it?

  1976. That we

  1977. need to

  1978. sink before

  1979. we're ready

  1980. to cry out

  1981. to him.

  1982. Wouldn't

  1983. Jesus rather

  1984. that Peter

  1985. had kept

  1986. his eyes

  1987. upon him

  1988. the whole

  1989. way,

  1990. not let

  1991. him go,

  1992. not feared

  1993. the wind

  1994. and waves,

  1995. but stuck

  1996. to him

  1997. and got

  1998. across to

  1999. him?

  2000. Isn't

  2001. that the

  2002. doubt that

  2003. Jesus is

  2004. speaking about,

  2005. the little

  2006. faith?

  2007. The faith

  2008. that Jesus

  2009. is looking

  2010. for,

  2011. the proportionate

  2012. response to

  2013. his saving

  2014. work is a

  2015. trust that

  2016. doesn't let

  2017. go of him

  2018. on any

  2019. part of the

  2020. journey,

  2021. a trust that

  2022. when he

  2023. tells us

  2024. not to

  2025. fear,

  2026. therefore

  2027. doesn't

  2028. fear,

  2029. but keeps

  2030. its eyes

  2031. firmly fixed

  2032. upon him.

  2033. I trust

  2034. that most

  2035. of us in

  2036. this room

  2037. have seen

  2038. who this

  2039. man is,

  2040. and we

  2041. don't need

  2042. to be

  2043. convinced

  2044. that he

  2045. is the

  2046. son of

  2047. God,

  2048. he is

  2049. the

  2050. Christ.

  2051. We've

  2052. seen what

  2053. he can

  2054. do,

  2055. we've

  2056. seen the

  2057. rescue

  2058. that he

  2059. brings

  2060. from sin

  2061. and death

  2062. and unbelief,

  2063. what more

  2064. does he

  2065. need to

  2066. do to

  2067. convince

  2068. us

  2069. that we

  2070. therefore

  2071. do not

  2072. need to

  2073. fear

  2074. when he

  2075. tells us

  2076. we don't

  2077. need to

  2078. fear,

  2079. that he

  2080. is

  2081. trustworthy

  2082. and

  2083. reliable

  2084. to save,

  2085. to redeem,

  2086. to deliver.

  2087. Brothers and

  2088. sisters,

  2089. we still

  2090. need him

  2091. don't we

  2092. to save

  2093. us from

  2094. our

  2095. faithless

  2096. fears,

  2097. to pray

  2098. with that

  2099. man at

  2100. the bottom

  2101. of the

  2102. mountain,

  2103. Lord I

  2104. believe,

  2105. help my

  2106. unbelief,

  2107. that he

  2108. would free

  2109. us from

  2110. the stubborn,

  2111. the hard

  2112. parts of

  2113. us that

  2114. still resist

  2115. trusting him

  2116. with our

  2117. lives,

  2118. from the

  2119. bits of

  2120. us that

  2121. run back

  2122. to the

  2123. chains

  2124. that he's

  2125. freed us

  2126. from in

  2127. the past,

  2128. to put

  2129. them back

  2130. on

  2131. ourselves.

  2132. Friends,

  2133. when we

  2134. cry out

  2135. to him,

  2136. he has

  2137. proved that

  2138. he will

  2139. rescue,

  2140. that he

  2141. will deliver

  2142. us,

  2143. not only by

  2144. stretching out

  2145. his hand to

  2146. Peter to

  2147. pull him out

  2148. of the sea,

  2149. but by

  2150. stretching out

  2151. his hands

  2152. on a

  2153. cross

  2154. to pull

  2155. us out

  2156. of sin

  2157. and darkness

  2158. and death.

  2159. That is

  2160. where the

  2161. rescue of

  2162. Jesus took

  2163. him to

  2164. the cross

  2165. to suffer,

  2166. to die in

  2167. our place,

  2168. to set our

  2169. hearts free

  2170. from sin

  2171. and fear

  2172. and death,

  2173. so that as

  2174. we trust him

  2175. for that

  2176. rescue,

  2177. Lord,

  2178. save me,

  2179. we are

  2180. saved,

  2181. we are

  2182. rescued.

  2183. Friends,

  2184. Jesus has

  2185. come and he

  2186. has accomplished

  2187. his rescue.

  2188. He is mighty

  2189. to save,

  2190. so let us

  2191. trust him

  2192. fully with

  2193. that full

  2194. and free

  2195. rescue that

  2196. he holds

  2197. out to us

  2198. tonight.

  2199. And let's

  2200. pray as we

  2201. do that.

  2202. Let us

  2203. pray.

  2204. Lord,

  2205. we believe.

  2206. Help our

  2207. unbelief,

  2208. we pray.

  2209. Lord,

  2210. we have

  2211. seen that

  2212. you are

  2213. the Son

  2214. of God,

  2215. that you

  2216. are mighty

  2217. to save,

  2218. that you

  2219. are the

  2220. God of

  2221. miracles,

  2222. that you

  2223. give life

  2224. to the

  2225. dead,

  2226. and we

  2227. simply ask,

  2228. Lord Jesus,

  2229. that by your

  2230. Holy Spirit

  2231. you would set

  2232. our hearts

  2233. free from

  2234. fear,

  2235. that you

  2236. would fix

  2237. our eyes

  2238. firmly upon

  2239. you,

  2240. that we

  2241. would not

  2242. take our

  2243. eyes away

  2244. from you,

  2245. Lord,

  2246. when we

  2247. are battered

  2248. by winds

  2249. and waves

  2250. of life,

  2251. or indeed,

  2252. Lord,

  2253. the winds

  2254. and waves

  2255. that are in

  2256. our own

  2257. hearts,

  2258. the chaos

  2259. of our

  2260. own doubts

  2261. and sin.

  2262. Oh,

  2263. Lord,

  2264. hold us

  2265. close,

  2266. we pray.

  2267. We thank

  2268. you,

  2269. Lord,

  2270. that you

  2271. immediately

  2272. saved Peter,

  2273. and immediately,

  2274. Lord,

  2275. you do

  2276. deliver,

  2277. you do

  2278. rescue.

  2279. And so,

  2280. from our

  2281. hearts,

  2282. we pray,

  2283. Lord,

  2284. save us.

  2285. And,

  2286. Father,

  2287. we ask

  2288. particularly for

  2289. those who have

  2290. never said

  2291. that in

  2292. their heart,

  2293. and that by

  2294. your Holy Spirit

  2295. you would grant

  2296. them that

  2297. faith that

  2298. leads to

  2299. repentance and

  2300. eternal life,

  2301. that they

  2302. would pray to

  2303. you,

  2304. Lord,

  2305. save me.

  2306. This we ask

  2307. in Jesus'

  2308. name.

  2309. Amen.

  2310. As we

  2311. respond to

  2312. God's word,

  2313. we're going to

  2314. sing together

  2315. from Psalm

  2316. 116,

  2317. from Sing

  2318. Psalms,

  2319. words that

  2320. echo

  2321. Peter's cry

  2322. to Jesus,

  2323. Lord,

  2324. save me.

  2325. We're singing

  2326. from verses

  2327. 1 to 6,

  2328. and the tune

  2329. is

  2330. even tied.

  2331. Let's stand

  2332. to sing

  2333. God's praise.

  2334. I love

  2335. the Lord

  2336. because

  2337. he

  2338. heard

  2339. my

  2340. heart.

  2341. voice

  2342. he

  2343. listened

  2344. and

  2345. I

  2346. cried

  2347. to him

  2348. for

  2349. me.

  2350. I'll

  2351. call him

  2352. as

  2353. for

  2354. us

  2355. I

  2356. shall

  2357. live

  2358. because

  2359. he

  2360. turned

  2361. to hear

  2362. me

  2363. when

  2364. I

  2365. force

  2366. of

  2367. death

  2368. the

  2369. manage

  2370. and

  2371. will

  2372. lead

  2373. upon

  2374. me

  2375. give

  2376. thee

  2377. and

  2378. wish

  2379. of

  2380. the

  2381. grave

  2382. with

2383. Grief and trouble I was overcome.

2384. Then on the name of what I called, Lord, sing.

2385. The Lord, our God, is high and full of praise.

2386. O Christ, and come, God, sure is He.

2387. The Lord protects all those of childlike faith.

2388. When I was in great, He rescued me.

2389. Now may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,

2390. and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be yours both now and forever.

  2391. Amen.

  2392. Amen.
