  1. Let us now call upon the name of God in prayer.

  2. Amen.

  3. Gracious and ever-blessed God,

  4. we seek grace today to approach a throne of grace together

  5. as a worshipping people,

  6. mindful that we draw near to one who is infinitely high above us,

  7. one who is the King, eternal, immortal, invisible,

  8. the only wise God,

  9. the one who is worthy of all glory, all honour and all praise,

  10. and we seek, therefore, to come with reverence and with godly fear

  11. before one who is holy,

  12. one who is high and lifted up,

  13. the lofty one who inhabits eternity,

  14. whose very name is holy,

  15. and we seek to come with humility,

  16. knowing what we are,

  17. not only creatures of the dust,

  18. but those who have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

  19. we seek grace to confess our sins together,

  20. to confess what we are,

  21. to say with the psalmist,

  22. my sins and faults of youth,

  23. do thou, O Lord, forget,

  24. after thy mercy think on me,

  25. and for thy goodness great.

  26. And we come confessing our sins with that great promise,

  27. that if we do so,

  28. that our God is faithful and just

  29. to forgive us our sins,

  30. and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  31. And so, Lord, we pray thee today

  32. to meet with us here as we worship.

  33. That is our great desire,

  34. not in the first place to receive,

  35. although we know that thou art a God who is bountiful,

  36. and one who gives freely.

  37. But our first desire is to give,

  38. to offer the sacrifices of praise,

  39. the calves of our lips,

  40. and to give to God the glory

  41. that is due to his name.

  42. We come giving thanks

  43. that there is a new and living way

  44. for us to approach,

  45. and through the blood of Jesus Christ,

  46. through his Persian and finished work,

  47. that we are able to draw near

  48. to a throne of grace with boldness,

  49. that we might obtain mercy

  50. and find grace to help us

  51. in time of need.

  52. And so, as we seek reverence

  53. in our own hearts,

  54. grant that we would know something

  55. of the boldness of sons

  56. approaching a father as well,

  57. knowing that the Lord of hosts

  58. upon our side

  59. doth constantly remain,

  60. the God of Jacob,

  61. our refuge,

  62. as safely to maintain.

  63. And so, Lord, bless us together today.

  64. Bless the children

  65. as they go to their classes,

  66. and their teachers.

  67. Bless their parents,

  68. be mindful of them,

  69. raising children in these days,

  70. and give them grace,

  71. and give them strength,

  72. and give them determination

  73. to raise them in the Lord

  74. for the glory of Christ,

  75. and for the eternal good

  76. of their own undying souls.

  77. And so bless us now, Lord,

  78. as we continue in thy presence.

  79. Grant that all would be done

  80. not to the glory of man,

  81. but to the glory of the triune God,

  82. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  83. And we ask these things

  84. in Christ's name,

  85. and for his sake.

  86. Amen.

  87. Well, boys and girls,

  88. I've been asked to say

  89. a few words to you now.

  90. I wonder if any of you know

  91. what a martyr is.

  92. Well, a martyr

  93. is somebody

  94. who was put to death

  95. because they were a Christian.

  96. Now, I'm sure you think

  97. of being a Christian,

  98. you think of yourselves

  99. as Christians,

  100. but you don't ever think

  101. of being put to death

  102. for being Christians.

  103. But you know,

  104. if we look at history,

  105. if we look at history

  106. throughout the nations

  107. of the world,

  108. there were actually

  109. many people

  110. who loved Jesus so much

  111. that they were willing

  112. to be put to death

  113. to die for Jesus.

  114. And I don't know

  115. if you know this,

  116. but you might hear

  117. about it sometimes,

  118. but in many countries

  119. in our world,

  120. even today,

  121. across Africa and Asia,

  122. different parts of the world,

  123. there are Christians

  124. being put to death

  125. because they refuse

  126. to deny Jesus.

  127. And you think to yourself,

  128. and rightly so,

  129. well, that would never happen

  130. in Scotland.

  131. And we hope that it never

  132. will happen again.

  133. But you know what?

  134. Many times in our history,

  135. even in Scotland,

  136. people were put to death

  137. because they were Christians.

  138. And I want to tell you

  139. a wee story

  140. about a girl

  141. called Margaret Wilson.

  142. And in these days,

  143. there were different types

  144. of churches.

  145. And there were some churches

  146. which preached Christ

  147. and which held to the truth.

  148. And there were other churches

  149. which didn't.

  150. But in these days,

  151. the king wanted people

  152. to go to his own churches

  153. and not to the churches

  154. that preached Christ.

  155. And there was this girl,

  156. Margaret Wilson.

  157. She was 18.

  158. And her sister was 13.

  159. And they wanted to hear

  160. the truth.

  161. They wanted to hear

  162. the Bible preached.

  163. And they wanted to hear

  164. about Jesus Christ.

  165. So instead of going

  166. to the main churches,

  167. to the buildings,

  168. they went out to the fields

  169. and to the moors.

  170. And there were ministers

  171. who would preach out there.

  172. And it was actually illegal

  173. for them to do so.

  174. But it was so important

  175. for them to preach Christ

  176. that that's what they did.

  177. And that's where Margaret Wilson

  178. and her sister went.

  179. But something terrible happened.

  180. And the police caught them.

  181. And they were sentenced to death.

  182. Margaret, who was 18,

  183. and her sister, who was 13.

  184. Now, her father went to the police

  185. and he said,

  186. Now, they're only young girls.

  187. Please let them go.

  188. And the police let one of them go,

  189. Margaret's wee sister,

  190. who was 13.

  191. But they didn't let

  192. Margaret Wilson go.

  193. And Margaret Wilson

  194. was sentenced to death

  195. on the 11th of May, 1685.

  196. That was about 340 years ago.

  197. And she was sentenced to death

  198. in a very awful way.

  199. Herself and another Margaret,

  200. called Margaret McLoughlin.

  201. You've maybe heard the story,

  202. The Two Margarets.

  203. This is where it comes from.

  204. They were tied to bits of wood

  205. on a beach.

  206. Okay?

  207. And they waited for the sea

  208. to come in.

  209. And bit by bit,

  210. the sea was getting higher

  211. and higher.

  212. And they put Margaret Wilson,

  213. the younger girl,

  214. they put her nearer the shore.

  215. And what happened was

  216. she could see Margaret McLoughlin,

  217. the older woman.

  218. She could see the waters

  219. going over her head.

  220. And Margaret McLoughlin died.

  221. And Margaret Wilson saw that.

  222. And when she saw that,

  223. the soldiers came to her,

  224. the policemen came to her

  225. and said,

  226. Now what will you do?

  227. Will you deny Christ?

  228. Will you give the oath

  229. to the king?

  230. And she said,

  231. No way.

  232. I love the Lord Jesus Christ

  233. and I'm not going to do that.

  234. And bit by bit,

  235. the waters came higher

  236. and higher

  237. until Margaret Wilson

  238. drowned as well.

  239. Imagine that.

  240. She was only 18,

  241. a few years older

  242. than some of you,

  243. maybe the same age

  244. as some of you.

  245. And that's how much

  246. she loved the Lord Jesus,

  247. that she wasn't willing

  248. to deny him.

  249. Now I hope that you'll never

  250. be asked to die

  251. for the Lord Jesus.

  252. But you will be asked

  253. to deny yourself,

  254. to make some difficult decisions

  255. and to do some hard things.

  256. And I hope when you're asked

  257. to do these hard things

  258. for Jesus,

  259. to stand up for him,

  260. to speak for him,

  261. to refuse to yield for him,

  262. I hope that when you do so,

  263. you'll think to yourself,

  264. Well, this is but a very small thing.

  265. Compared to what that girl,

  266. Margaret Wilson, did.

  267. And it's a really,

  268. really small thing

  269. compared to what Jesus did

  270. in dying for her sins.

  271. That the Lord would bless

  272. these thoughts to you.

  273. Well, I've been asked now

  274. to lead you

  275. in the Lord's Prayer.

  276. Our Father,

  277. which art in heaven,

  278. hallowed be thy name.

  279. Thy kingdom come.

  280. Thy will be done on earth

  281. as it is in heaven.

  282. Give us this day

  283. our daily bread,

  284. and forgive us our debts

  285. as we forgive our debtors.

  286. And lead us not into temptation,

  287. but deliver us from evil.

  288. For thine is the kingdom,

  289. the power and the glory,

  290. forever.

  291. Amen.

  292. Amen.

  293. Well, as the children

  294. make their way out,

  295. we're now going to sing again,

  296. this time from Psalm 49.

  297. Psalm 49

  298. in the Sing-Sams version

  299. of the Psalm.

  300. And the tune is Sussex.

  301. From verse 7,

  302. that's page 65,

  303. verse 7.

  304. There is no one

  305. who is able to redeem

  306. a soul from death.

  307. None can pay to God

  308. the ransom

  309. to prolong another's breath.

  310. To redeem a life

  311. as costly

  312. none sufficient price

  313. can pay.

  314. So that one

  315. should live immortal,

  316. free forever

  317. from decay.

  318. That's saying,

  319. no matter how much money

  320. you have,

  321. you're going to die.

  322. You can't pay

  323. your way out of that.

  324. For we all

  325. can see life ending,

  326. wise and foolish,

  327. all will die.

  328. They must leave

  329. their wealth to others,

  330. none can death's demand defy.

  331. So for endless generations

  332. in their tombs,

  333. they will remain,

  334. though they owned

  335. while they were living

  336. lands to which

  337. they gave their name.

  338. Man, despite his wealth,

  339. is mortal.

  340. Like the beasts,

  341. he fades away.

  342. Thus the self-assured

  343. will perish,

  344. though renowned

  345. for what they say.

  346. I'm going to sing

  347. then these verses,

  348. Psalm 7 to 13

  349. of Psalm 49,

  350. to God's praise.

  351. There is no one

  352. who is able

  353. to redeem a soul

  354. from death.

  355. Amen.

  356. There is no one

  357. who is able

  358. to redeem

  359. a soul

  360. from death.

  361. none can pay

  362. to God

  363. the ransom

  364. to prolong

  365. another's breath.

  366. To redeem

  367. a life is costly,

  368. none sufficient

  369. price can pay,

  370. so that one should live

  371. immortal,

  372. free forever

  373. from decay.

  374. For we all

  375. can see

  376. life ending,

  377. wise and foolish

  378. all will die.

  379. They must leave

  380. their wealth

  381. to others,

  382. none can death

  383. demand,

  384. defy.

  385. So for endless

  386. generations

  387. in their tomb

  388. they will remain,

  389. though they own

  390. while they were living

  391. lands to which

  392. they gave

  393. their name.

  394. Man, despite

  395. his wealth

  396. is mortal,

  397. like the beast

  398. he fades away.

  399. Thus the self-assured

  400. will perish,

  401. though renowned

  402. for what

  403. they say.

  404. Well, let us now

  405. read God's Word

  406. as we find it

  407. in the Gospel

  408. according to Mark

  409. and chapter 8,

  410. picking up our reading

  411. from verse 22.

  412. Mark 28

  413. from verse 22,

  414. and we're reading

  415. together

  416. down to the end

  417. of the chapter.

  418. And they came

  419. to Bethsaida,

  420. and some people

  421. brought to him

  422. a blind man

  423. and begged him

  424. to touch him.

  425. And he took

  426. the blind man

  427. by the hand

  428. and led him

  429. out of the village.

  430. And when he had

  431. spat on his eyes

  432. and laid his hands

  433. on him,

  434. he asked him,

  435. do you see anything?

  436. And he looked up

  437. and said,

  438. I see men,

  439. but they looked

  440. like trees

  441. walking.

  442. Then Jesus

  443. laid his hands

  444. on his eyes again

  445. and he reopened

  446. his eyes.

  447. His sight was

  448. restored

  449. and he saw

  450. everything clearly.

  451. And he sent him

  452. to his home

  453. saying,

  454. do not even

  455. enter the village.

  456. And Jesus

  457. went on

  458. with his disciples

  459. to the villages

  460. of Caesarea Philippi.

  461. and on the way

  462. he asked his disciples,

  463. who do people

  464. say that I am?

  465. And they told him,

  466. John the Baptist,

  467. and others say Elijah,

  468. and others one

  469. of the prophets.

  470. And he asked them,

  471. but who do you

  472. say that I am?

  473. Peter answered him,

  474. you are the Christ.

  475. And he strictly

  476. charged them

  477. to tell no one

  478. about him.

  479. And he began

  480. to teach them

  481. that the Son of Man

  482. must suffer

  483. many things

  484. and be rejected

  485. by the elders

  486. and the chief priests

  487. and the scribes

  488. and be killed

  489. and after three days

  490. rise again.

  491. And he said this

  492. plainly.

  493. And Peter took him

  494. aside and began

  495. to rebuke him.

  496. But turning

  497. and seeing his disciples,

  498. he rebuked Peter

  499. and said,

  500. get behind me,

  501. Satan,

  502. for you are not

  503. setting your mind

  504. on the things

  505. of God

  506. but on the things

  507. of man.

  508. And he called

  509. to him the crowd

  510. with his disciples

  511. and said to them,

  512. if anyone would

  513. come after me,

  514. let him deny himself

  515. and take up his cross

  516. and follow me.

  517. For whoever would

  518. save his life

  519. will lose it,

  520. but whoever loses

  521. his life for my sake

  522. and the gospels

  523. will save it.

  524. For what does it

  525. profit a man

  526. to gain the whole world

  527. and forfeit his life?

  528. For what can a man

  529. give in return

  530. for his life?

  531. For whoever is ashamed

  532. of me and of my words

  533. in this adulterous

  534. and sinful generation,

  535. of whom will the

  536. Son of Man

  537. also be ashamed

  538. when he comes

  539. in the glory

  540. of his Father

  541. with the holy angels.

  542. Amen.

  543. And we pray that the Lord

  544. would bless his own word

  545. to us.

  546. And to his name

  547. be all the praise

  548. and all the glory.

  549. Well, let us again

  550. call upon the name

  551. of the Lord in prayer.

  552. Let us pray.

  553. Gracious and ever-blessed God,

  554. as we have read

  555. the living and breathing

  556. word together,

  557. we pray that we would

  558. have grace to receive it

  559. and wisdom

  560. to take it to heart.

  561. Help us to be

  562. not hearers

  563. of the word only,

  564. but to be doers

  565. of it also.

  566. Help us,

  567. when we hear it,

  568. not to harden

  569. our hearts,

  570. but to yield

  571. our hearts

  572. and indeed

  573. to yield

  574. our whole lives

  575. to it,

  576. knowing that the word

  577. is good

  578. and that it is

  579. for our good,

  580. that it is for

  581. our instruction

  582. in righteousness.

  583. And so, Lord,

  584. we pray for humility

  585. and not to stand

  586. over the word

  587. and judgment,

  588. but to sit under it

  589. as humble disciples,

  590. even as Mary of Bethany

  591. sat at the feet

  592. of Jesus

  593. and chose

  594. that good part

  595. which could not

  596. be taken from her.

  597. And so, Lord,

  598. we pray today

  599. as we gather

  600. in worship

  601. that our hearts

  602. would be lifted up

  603. in praise

  604. to the God

  605. who is good

  606. and who does good,

  607. the God

  608. who is love,

  609. and that we would

  610. remember

  611. as thy people

  612. that herein is love,

  613. not that we loved God,

  614. but that he loved us

  615. and sent his Son

  616. to be the propitiation

  617. for our sins.

  618. And so,

  619. we pray, Lord,

  620. now as we continue

  621. that all would be

  622. done to the glory

  623. of the great name

  624. of Jesus Christ,

  625. that the people of God

  626. might be strengthened

  627. in their faith

  628. and enabled to go on

  629. in the truth,

  630. and that those

  631. who are yet

  632. outside of Christ,

  633. some perhaps

  634. sitting on the fence,

  635. others entirely unconvinced,

  636. that the Holy Spirit

  637. might challenge them,

  638. that the sword

  639. of the Spirit

  640. might pierce

  641. their very hearts

  642. and minds,

  643. and that they

  644. might be convinced

  645. that there is

  646. a God in heaven,

  647. a God to whom

  648. we are all accountable,

  649. a God before whom

  650. we will all stand,

  651. and that as the

  652. prophet of old

  653. has told us,

  654. our great responsibility

  655. and duty

  656. in this life

  657. is to prepare

  658. to meet our God,

  659. and so prepare us,

  660. we ask.

  661. Bless this congregation,

  662. we pray for them,

  663. asking thy blessing

  664. to be upon them,

  665. help them to be faithful

  666. in their worship

  667. and in their witness,

  668. grant that the truth

  669. that is proclaimed

  670. from this pulpit

  671. week by week,

  672. that it might yield fruit,

  673. and that it might

  674. do so for eternity,

  675. we pray for the

  676. inter-moderator,

  677. we pray for

  678. Mr. Smith as well,

  679. the assistant minister,

  680. asking thy blessing

  681. to be upon both of them,

  682. and the office bearers here,

  683. and all of the congregation,

  684. we give thanks

  685. that we have seen

  686. so many young ones

  687. worshipping the Lord,

  688. and we pray that

  689. they might grow up

  690. as trees planted

  691. in the house of the Lord,

  692. that they might

  693. in the future,

  694. and even in these days,

  695. bear fruit.

  696. We pray for

  697. a new generation,

  698. a generation

  699. which will be faithful,

  700. indeed,

  701. which will be more faithful

  702. than our own generation

  703. has been,

  704. and so we pray

  705. for the Church of Christ,

  706. throughout our island,

  707. and throughout our nation,

  708. regardless of denomination,

  709. where Christ is preached,

  710. and where holiness

  711. is exhorted.

  712. Oh, we pray that

  713. the Church might increase,

  714. that the Word

  715. might go forth with power,

  716. that the Holy Spirit

  717. might be poured out

  718. upon us today,

  719. and upon other congregations

  720. throughout our land,

  721. for we are mindful

  722. that it is the Spirit

  723. that quickens

  724. and gives life,

  725. and the flesh

  726. profits nothing,

  727. that without Him

  728. we can do nothing,

  729. and so, Lord,

  730. meet with us

  731. and bless us

  732. and draw near to us,

  733. that Christ

  734. might be in our midst,

  735. that we might hear

  736. His voice,

  737. that we might feel

  738. His presence,

  739. and that we might know

  740. Him dwelling richly

  741. in our hearts.

  742. Remember our nation

  743. and those who rule

  744. over us particularly,

  745. our King

  746. and Royal Family,

  747. our Prime Minister,

  748. our First Minister,

  749. our Members of Parliament

  750. in Westminster

  751. and Holyrood,

  752. and our Councillors,

  753. we ask Thee

  754. to be mindful of them,

  755. to give them wisdom,

  756. because the truth

  757. tells us that

  758. righteousness

  759. exalts a nation,

  760. and that sin

  761. is our approach

  762. to any people,

  763. and so we pray

  764. that iniquity

  765. might be restrained,

  766. and that righteousness

  767. might flow forth,

  768. and we know, Lord,

  769. that the Church

  770. will be central to that,

  771. indeed that the pulpit

  772. will be central to that.

  773. And so, Lord,

  774. protect our pulpits,

  775. raise up faithful men

  776. of God,

  777. who will preach

  778. the unsearchable riches

  779. of Christ,

  780. and who will seek

  781. to obey God

  782. more than men.

  783. And so bless us now

  784. and go before us

  785. and forgive us graciously

  786. for all of our sin,

  787. for Christ's sake.

  788. Amen.

  789. Well, we can sing again

  790. to God's praise,

  791. this time in Psalm 37,

  792. and the tune is Moravia,

  793. we're singing from

  794. verse 25,

  795. sorry,

  796. verse 35,

  797. Psalm 37,

    Psalms 37:35

  798. verse 35,

  799. page 255,

  800. I saw the wicked,

  801. great in power,

  802. spread like a green bay tree,

  803. he passed,

  804. yea, was not,

  805. whom I sought,

  806. but found he could not be.

  807. Speaking of those

  808. who reject the Lord Jesus Christ,

  809. and they look so strong

  810. and so powerful,

  811. but in a short time

  812. they are gone.

  813. Mark thou the perfect,

  814. and behold the man

  815. of uprightness,

  816. because that surely

  817. of this man

  818. the latter end is peace.

  819. There is the great distinction

  820. between the two types of men,

  821. the two types of women.

  822. But those men

  823. that transgressors are

  824. shall be destroyed together,

  825. the latter end of wicked men

  826. shall be cut off forever,

  827. but the salvation of the just

  828. is from the Lord above.

  829. He in the time of their distress,

  830. their stay and strength

  831. doth prove.

  832. The Lord shall help

  833. and them deliver,

  834. he shall them free and save

  835. from wicked men,

  836. because in whom

  837. their confidence

  838. they have.

  839. Psalm 37,

    Psalms 37:35–40

  840. verses 35 to 40,

  841. to God's praise,

  842. I saw the wicked

  843. great in power

  844. spread like a green bay tree.

  845. I saw the wicked

  846. great in power

  847. spread like a green bay tree.

  848. He passed,

  849. yea, was not him I sought,

  850. but found he could not be.

  851. Mark thou the perfect

  852. and behold the man of a rightness,

  853. because that surely of this man

  854. the latter end is peace.

  855. but those men that transgressors are

  856. shall be destroyed together,

  857. the latter end of wicked men shall be cut off forever.

  858. forever.

  859. But the salvation of the just is from the Lord above.

  860. He in the time of their distress,

  861. their stay and strength doth prove.

  862. The Lord shall help and deliver,

  863. He shall them free and save from wicked men,

  864. because in him their confidence they have.

  865. Amen.

  866. Well,

  867. now with a view to God's blessing,

  868. if you would turn back with me

  869. to the portion of Scripture,

  870. which we read together in the Gospel

  871. according to Mark and chapter 8.

  872. We want to consider together verses 34 to 38,

  873. but we can take our text from verse 36.

  874. For what does it profit a man

  875. to gain the whole world

  876. and forfeit his life?

  877. Well, at the center of Christianity

  878. is the theme of sacrifice.

  879. And when we think of Christianity and sacrifice,

  880. we naturally think about the cross

  881. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  882. and rightly so,

  883. of Jesus' sacrificing himself,

  884. of denying himself,

  885. and going through the agony

  886. and the awfulness

  887. and the horror of Calvary

  888. in order that atonement might be made,

  889. being wounded for our transgressions,

  890. bruised for our iniquities.

  891. So we think of his sacrifice

  892. and the life and the forgiveness

  893. and the glory that is ours

  894. if we are in Christ as a result.

  895. And that is given to us freely.

  896. We do not earn it.

  897. It is not of works,

  898. Paul tells the Ephesians,

  899. lest any man should boast,

  900. but it is of grace.

  901. That is, it is a free

  902. and undeserved gift.

  903. And yet it's been said,

  904. and you've heard it said,

  905. I'm sure,

  906. that although the Gospel is free,

  907. it will cost you everything that you have.

  908. And you know there is truth in that as well.

  909. Sacrifice is central to Christianity.

  910. And that speaks of Christ,

  911. but it speaks of his people as well.

  912. Being a Christian is being somebody

  913. who has sacrificed

  914. and who does sacrifice.

  915. And today I want us to consider

  916. what that sacrifice looks like.

  917. And I want to consider

  918. why we ought to make that sacrifice.

  919. What the alternative

  920. to that sacrifice is.

  921. And the first thing that I want us to consider,

  922. to consider really three headings.

  923. And the first is

  924. the nature of discipleship.

  925. When I speak of discipleship,

  926. I just mean of the Christian life,

  927. of being a disciple.

  928. Christians in Jesus' day

  929. were called disciples.

  930. They were those who sat at his feet,

  931. who learned from him.

  932. They were those who went with him

  933. wherever he went

  934. and who sought to obey his commands.

  935. So the nature of discipleship.

  936. What does it look like

  937. to be a Christian,

  938. to be a disciple of Jesus?

  939. Now, here in this section,

  940. we have arguably

  941. the clearest description

  942. from Jesus' own lips

  943. of what it means

  944. to be a disciple,

  945. what it means to be a Christian.

  946. And we read in verse 34

  947. that he calls to the crowd

  948. with his disciples.

  949. So he's not just talking to the twelve.

  950. He's talking to the crowd,

  951. those of them who are disciples

  952. and any of them

  953. who would become a disciple.

  954. And he says to them,

  955. if anyone would come after me,

  956. let him deny himself

  957. and take up his cross

  958. and follow me.

  959. Now, just briefly,

  960. I think that there are

  961. four things there

  962. that we should consider.

  963. Four things that are true

  964. of the nature of discipleship,

  965. of what it means

  966. to be a Christian.

  967. And the first thing

  968. is perhaps quite basic

  969. and we could skip over it.

  970. And it is this,

  971. there is willingness there.

  972. There is a willingness.

  973. If any man would,

  974. I think in the authorised version,

  975. it was if any man will.

  976. We speak of

  977. if any man is willing.

  978. And when we read

  979. would or willing,

  980. it is talking about the will.

  981. It is talking about

  982. the man or the woman

  983. volitionally.

  984. You see, Christianity

  985. doesn't just affect

  986. your intellect.

  987. It's not just about

  988. learning things

  989. and keeping things in there.

  990. It's not just about

  991. being convinced

  992. of certain truths,

  993. that certain things are true

  994. and certain things are false.

  995. Now, that is in it

  996. and that is important.

  997. But there is more than that

  998. to being a Christian.

  999. You can be convinced

1000. of the truths of Christianity

1001. and not be a Christian.

1002. So, there is the intellectual element.

  1003. There is also

  1004. the emotional element.

  1005. Your affections are moved.

  1006. Those who are Christians

  1007. are those who love

  1008. the Lord Jesus Christ.

1009. They are those who hate sin.

  1010. The affections are moved.

  1011. And as Christians,

1012. there ought to be times

  1013. when we are moved.

1014. Moved by what the Lord

  1015. has done for us.

  1016. Moved in our affections.

  1017. Moved in our feelings.

  1018. Moved about our sins.

1019. And yet, you can be moved.

  1020. We all know people

1021. who have sat under sermons

1022. and they have been convinced

  1023. of the truth.

1024. And they have been moved by it.

  1025. And like Felix,

  1026. their knees have trembled

  1027. or they have wept

1028. knowing that there is truth in this.

  1029. That this is important.

  1030. That this is urgent.

1031. That this is life and death.

  1032. And yet,

  1033. they have gone away

1034. and they have never become Christians.

  1035. Why is that?

  1036. Well, because although

  1037. the intellect was persuaded

  1038. and although the affections

  1039. were moved,

  1040. the will remained unmoved.

  1041. But Christianity affects us

  1042. volitionally as well.

1043. We become willing to follow.

  1044. You see,

  1045. Jesus doesn't drag anybody

  1046. kicking and screaming

1047. into the kingdom of God.

  1048. You don't become a Christian

  1049. despite yourself.

  1050. You don't become a Christian

  1051. saying,

1052. well, I really don't want to do this

1053. but I'm just going to do it anyway.

1054. That's not the way it works.

1055. We read in Psalm 110

1056. that the Lord will make

  1057. his people willing

1058. in a day of his power.

1059. That he doesn't drag us

  1060. kicking and screaming

  1061. but he calls us

  1062. with an effectual call

  1063. with irresistible grace

1064. so that before we know it,

1065. our own mind is changed,

1066. our own will is altered

1067. and the things that we

  1068. didn't want to do.

1069. I mean, most of you

  1070. can remember a time

  1071. when you didn't want

  1072. to be a Christian.

  1073. Not all of you

  1074. but most of you.

  1075. And something changed

1076. and then you found yourself

1077. wanting to be a Christian

1078. and then you found yourself

  1079. thinking,

1080. well, the most important thing

1081. in all of life for me

1082. is to become a Christian.

  1083. You see, friends,

  1084. those who follow Jesus,

  1085. those who are disciples

1086. are those who are willing

  1087. to do so.

1088. And if you turn that

  1089. on its head,

1090. then this is true also.

  1091. That if you're not

  1092. a Christian here today,

  1093. well, it might be

1094. that there are certain things

  1095. that you're not fully

  1096. persuaded of.

  1097. And let's be honest,

1098. that was true of all of us.

1099. And you have to search

  1100. the scriptures

1101. and you have to be in company

  1102. with the Lord's people

1103. and you have to do it

  1104. all prayerfully

  1105. because you want

  1106. to be persuaded.

1107. And that might be the case.

1108. It might be the case

1109. that you've never been moved

  1110. under the gospel.

1111. But this is certainly the case

  1112. that if you're not a Christian,

  1113. it's because you don't

1114. want to be a Christian.

  1115. It's because you don't

1116. want to be a Christian.

1117. Now, I don't mean to be harsh

  1118. to anybody there

1119. because you might be there

  1120. here today

  1121. and you're thinking,

  1122. well, I'm not a Christian

1123. but I really do want

  1124. to be a Christian.

  1125. I really do.

  1126. Well, there are promises

  1127. for you too.

  1128. Jesus says,

1129. seek and you shall find.

1130. Ask and it shall be given to you.

1131. And if you really want

  1132. more than anything else

1133. in life to be a Christian today,

  1134. then the chances are

  1135. that you've already

  1136. taken the first steps

  1137. to becoming a Christian,

1138. that the Lord is already

  1139. working in your life

  1140. and let that be

  1141. an encouragement to you.

  1142. But if you're not a Christian,

  1143. the central thing

  1144. won't be a lack

  1145. of intellectual persuasion

  1146. or not having

  1147. your feelings moved.

  1148. It will be this,

1149. that you just don't want to be.

1150. That there are other things

  1151. that are more important

  1152. to you in life

  1153. than giving your life

  1154. to Jesus Christ.

  1155. Christ.

1156. And so those who are disciples

1157. are those who are willing

  1158. to follow.

  1159. The second thing,

1160. and let me try to move

  1161. through them quickly,

1162. if anyone would come after me,

  1163. if anyone is willing

  1164. to come after me,

  1165. let him deny himself.

  1166. There is self-denial.

  1167. And of course,

  1168. we've touched on this.

1169. This is a great characteristic

  1170. of our Lord.

1171. Though he was equal with God,

  1172. yet he made himself

  1173. of no reputation.

  1174. He humbled himself.

  1175. He emptied himself

  1176. of his glory.

  1177. He became obedient

1178. to suffering and to death,

1179. even the death of the cross.

1180. He tells us about it.

  1181. That is a context.

1182. He said plainly to the people

1183. that the Son of Man

  1184. must suffer many things

  1185. and be rejected

  1186. by the elders

  1187. and the chief priests

  1188. and the scribes

  1189. and be killed.

1190. This is the Son of God.

1191. He didn't need to go

  1192. through any of this.

  1193. But he had entered

1194. into a covenant to do so.

1195. He had promised to do so.

  1196. And part of that

  1197. was self-denial.

  1198. And when you look

  1199. at the Lord,

  1200. that is what jumps

1201. to you off the page,

  1202. that he is one

  1203. who denied himself.

1204. But here he's telling us

  1205. to deny ourselves,

  1206. to be Christ-like

1207. in this way as well.

  1208. And you know, friends,

  1209. by nature,

  1210. we want to do

  1211. the very opposite,

  1212. don't we?

  1213. We don't want

  1214. to deny ourselves.

  1215. We don't want

  1216. to deny ours.

  1217. We say,

1218. I will not have this man

  1219. to reign over me.

1220. If it means doing things

  1221. that aren't easy

  1222. for me to do,

  1223. doing things

  1224. that I don't want to do,

  1225. doing things

1226. that are going to cost me,

  1227. that are going to

  1228. entail sacrifice for me,

  1229. then really,

  1230. really,

  1231. I would rather not.

  1232. And yet,

  1233. that's what Jesus

  1234. calls you to, friend.

  1235. He calls you

  1236. to self-denial.

  1237. To live

  1238. no longer for yourself,

  1239. but for him.

  1240. You remember

  1241. that that's what

  1242. the apostle said

  1243. in 2 Corinthians 5,

1244. that the love of Christ

  1245. constrains us,

  1246. constrains us

  1247. or compels us

  1248. to do what?

  1249. To live no longer

  1250. for ourselves,

  1251. but for him

  1252. who died for us

  1253. and who rose again.

1254. And so being a Christian

  1255. means denying yourself.

  1256. It means

  1257. putting the Lord first,

  1258. denying your own desires,

  1259. denying your own will,

  1260. denying your own way,

  1261. your own aspirations,

  1262. and saying,

  1263. Lord,

  1264. lead me.

  1265. Lord,

  1266. guide me.

  1267. Show me thy ways,

  1268. O Lord,

  1269. thy paths,

  1270. O teach thou me.

1271. And do thou lead me

  1272. in thy truth,

  1273. therein my teacher be.

  1274. So there is self-denial

  1275. in the Christian life

  1276. and there will be

  1277. self-denial

  1278. in your life

  1279. if you're a Christian.

  1280. The third thing

  1281. is that

  1282. if any man's

1283. going to come after Jesus,

1284. that he must deny himself

1285. and take up his cross.

  1286. Now,

  1287. you hear people saying

  1288. that we've all got

  1289. our cross to bear.

  1290. And yet,

1291. we know what they mean,

  1292. but this isn't speaking

  1293. about general afflictions

  1294. or trials.

  1295. The cross was what

  1296. a criminal carried

  1297. to the place

  1298. of his execution.

  1299. Jesus had to bear

  1300. his own cross.

  1301. And other men

  1302. and men who were

  1303. sentenced to death

  1304. in these days,

  1305. they would carry

  1306. their own cross

  1307. on the way

  1308. to the place

  1309. of execution.

  1310. And when people

  1311. saw them,

  1312. well,

  1313. they knew what was

  1314. going on.

  1315. They would say,

  1316. well,

  1317. that person's

  1318. bearing his cross,

  1319. he's on his way

  1320. to be executed.

  1321. He's on his way

  1322. to die.

  1323. The cross was

  1324. a symbol of death.

  1325. That's what it was.

  1326. And what Jesus

  1327. is saying is this,

  1328. that if you're

  1329. going to follow me,

  1330. that you must be

  1331. willing not only

  1332. to deny yourself

  1333. on the smaller things,

  1334. but you must be

  1335. willing to lose

  1336. your life.

  1337. To lose it

  1338. metaphorically

1339. in giving it to me

1340. so that I can be

  1341. the master of it

1342. and the king of it.

  1343. But also,

  1344. he goes further

1345. and this is a thing.

  1346. He says,

  1347. you must be willing

  1348. to lose it physically

  1349. as well.

  1350. Physically.

1351. And this is the very

  1352. fulfillment of self-denial.

  1353. You cannot deny yourself

  1354. further than this

  1355. to give your life,

1356. to breathe your last breath

  1357. like Margaret Wilson did,

  1358. like Margaret McLaughlin did,

  1359. like what people

  1360. are doing all over

  1361. the world today,

  1362. dying for Christ

  1363. rather than denying him.

  1364. And you know,

  1365. friends,

  1366. Jesus was speaking

  1367. to the disciples here

  1368. and these very disciples

  1369. who would be apostles,

  1370. many of them

  1371. experienced this.

  1372. They paid

  1373. the highest price.

  1374. We know,

  1375. well,

1376. we read in the scriptures

  1377. that James,

  1378. the brother of John,

  1379. was beheaded.

1380. And that for Christ's sake,

  1381. tradition tells us

  1382. that Peter

  1383. was crucified

  1384. upside down,

  1385. that Paul,

  1386. the apostle Paul,

1387. himself was put to death.

  1388. History is full

  1389. of instances,

  1390. friends,

  1391. of people giving

  1392. their lives.

  1393. And you know,

  1394. we're not living

1395. in that kind of country today

  1396. and we're not living

1397. in that kind of time.

1398. But be under no illusions.

  1399. Christians,

  1400. there is a cross

  1401. to bear as well

  1402. today,

  1403. in different ways,

1404. but there is a cross

  1405. to bear.

  1406. To be a Christian

1407. is to lose your life

  1408. and that's becoming

  1409. increasingly evident

  1410. in a society

  1411. which is not just

  1412. post-Christian

  1413. but is becoming

  1414. increasingly

  1415. anti-Christian.

  1416. And the world today,

  1417. the word of God

  1418. today isn't just

  1419. unpopular,

1420. but it seemed to be

  1421. actually dangerous.

  1422. And services of worship

  1423. like this,

  1424. where people take

  1425. the word of God

  1426. seriously,

  1427. they're seen to be

  1428. dangerous.

  1429. Prayer is seen

  1430. to be dangerous.

  1431. And so if you're

  1432. going to live out

  1433. the Christian life,

  1434. if you're going to

  1435. live it out

  1436. in your workplace,

  1437. if you're going to

  1438. live it out

  1439. in the school

  1440. or in the hospital

  1441. or in the surgery

  1442. or in the office

1443. or whatever it might be,

  1444. then you will find

  1445. yourself being

  1446. increasingly marginalized.

  1447. You will find that.

  1448. And you know,

  1449. that cross doesn't

1450. sit well on our shoulders.

  1451. Because our

  1452. inclination,

  1453. our natural

  1454. inclination,

  1455. is to shun that,

  1456. to run from it.

  1457. We can even see

  1458. that the natural

  1459. inclination,

  1460. human inclination,

  1461. of Jesus

  1462. was to shun it.

  1463. If it be possible

  1464. that this cup

  1465. would be taken

  1466. from me,

  1467. Jesus said,

1468. but not as I will,

  1469. but as thou wilt.

  1470. Even Jesus felt

  1471. that horror

  1472. at what he saw

  1473. in the cup,

  1474. at what the cross

  1475. would entail.

1476. And we do as well.

1477. And yet at the same time,

  1478. as it was what

  1479. Jesus was called to,

  1480. it's what we're called to.

  1481. To give our life.

1482. To give all of our life.

  1483. To give it metaphorically.

  1484. And whatever that

  1485. might mean,

  1486. might not mean

  1487. losing your life,

  1488. we hope not.

1489. It may very well mean

  1490. losing your reputation.

1491. It may very well mean

  1492. losing many other things.

  1493. We'll come to that.

  1494. But that's what

  1495. you're called to.

  1496. And fourthly,

  1497. and finally here,

  1498. the nature of discipleship

1499. is just a general term.

  1500. He says that you're

  1501. to deny yourself

1502. to take up your cross

  1503. and follow me.

1504. To put it very simply,

  1505. the Christian is somebody

  1506. who follows Christ.

  1507. Not the whims

  1508. and the fashions

  1509. of this world.

  1510. Christ is king.

  1511. The word is truth.

  1512. That is law.

  1513. And to follow Christ

1514. is to submit to him.

1515. To submit to his will.

1516. To submit to his word.

  1517. And to do that

  1518. at whatever cost.

  1519. And you know,

  1520. friends,

1521. the cost can be high.

  1522. I've touched on it.

1523. But even in our day,

1524. you know that there are

  1525. lines of work

  1526. which really are closed

  1527. to many Christians.

  1528. Certainly Christians

1529. who are going to be faithful.

  1530. Certainly Christians

1531. who aren't going to bend

  1532. on things like

  1533. the Lord's Day.

1534. There are lines of work

1535. that are closed to them.

  1536. And being a Christian

  1537. in different parts

  1538. of our country

  1539. can lead to joblessness.

1540. It can lead to being

  1541. ostracized and mocked.

1542. We've all known a bit of that

  1543. if we're Christians.

1544. It can lead to losing

  1545. acquaintances and friends.

1546. It can even lead to

  1547. breakages in the family.

  1548. Jesus himself speaks

  1549. about father being divided

  1550. against son

  1551. and mother against daughter

  1552. and so on.

1553. It can lead to suffering.

1554. It can lead to isolation

  1555. and loneliness.

  1556. And yet,

  1557. yet you know that

  1558. and yet you continue

1559. to follow the Lord Jesus.

  1560. Because Christ also

  1561. suffered for us,

  1562. as Peter says,

1563. leaving an example for us

  1564. that we should follow

  1565. in his steps.

  1566. You know, friends,

  1567. we read this

  1568. and I hope we haven't

  1569. in any way

  1570. embellished it

  1571. or misexplained it.

1572. But we read the very words

  1573. of Jesus

1574. and we can say this.

  1575. Jesus doesn't lead us

  1576. down the garden path,

  1577. does he?

1578. He tells us up front

  1579. what Christianity is,

1580. what it's going to mean.

  1581. He doesn't say

1582. that it's going to be easy.

  1583. He doesn't say

1584. that there's going to be

  1585. no cost.

  1586. On the very contrary,

1587. he says the very opposite.

  1588. He says it's a costly thing.

  1589. It's a sacrificial thing.

  1590. It's a difficult thing.

  1591. Jesus tells us that.

  1592. And you know, friends,

  1593. we shouldn't as churches

  1594. try to deceive people

1595. into the kingdom of God,

  1596. deceive them into membership

  1597. by not telling them

1598. really what's expected of them

1599. and what the Christian life means

  1600. if it's lived,

1601. if it's lived as the word

1602. calls us to live it.

  1603. That's what Jesus calls

  1604. his people to be.

  1605. And let's be honest.

1606. We want a strong church.

  1607. We want a church

  1608. which will leaven society

  1609. and have an impact

  1610. and have an influence

  1611. in our own workplaces,

  1612. in our own families,

  1613. in society at large.

1614. And these are the kind

1615. of Christians that we need.

  1616. These are the kind

1617. of leaders that we need.

  1618. These are the kind

  1619. of men, friends,

  1620. that we need.

1621. Men who will be strong,

  1622. who will be leaders,

1623. who will guide their families,

  1624. who will guide churches,

  1625. who will guide societies.

  1626. These are the kind

1627. of men who we need,

  1628. who will deny themselves

1629. and take up their cross

  1630. and follow Jesus

  1631. regardless of the cost.

  1632. These are the kind

1633. of women that we need,

  1634. the kind of mothers

  1635. in Israel,

  1636. the kind of women

1637. that we need in churches,

1638. that we need in workplaces,

1639. that we need in homes,

1640. that we need throughout society.

  1641. That is what Christ

  1642. calls us to be.

  1643. And friends,

1644. if we were living this out,

  1645. what a difference

  1646. we would see.

  1647. Devoted,

  1648. selfless,

  1649. faithful Christians,

  1650. that's what Jesus

  1651. calls us to.

  1652. That's the first point.

  1653. Let us see,

  1654. secondly,

  1655. we've seen the nature

  1656. of discipleship,

  1657. the alternative

  1658. to discipleship.

  1659. Verse 35,

  1660. for whoever would save

1661. his life will lose it,

  1662. but whoever loses

1663. his life for my sake

  1664. and the gospels

  1665. will save it.

  1666. Now,

  1667. we've seen that being

1668. a Christian is in many ways

  1669. to lose your life

  1670. or to lose it

  1671. as you want,

  1672. you would naturally,

  1673. let me say sinfully,

  1674. want to live it.

  1675. And the alternative

  1676. to that

  1677. is just to

  1678. take Jesus' words

1679. with a pinch of salt

1680. and to keep your life.

1681. And you can do that

  1682. if you're not a Christian

  1683. here today

  1684. and not a member

  1685. of the church.

  1686. You could say,

  1687. well,

  1688. thanks,

  1689. but no thanks,

  1690. I'll leave it.

1691. But you can also do this

1692. if you are a member

  1693. in the church.

1694. You can be a member,

1695. you can sit at the Lord's table

  1696. and you can hear

  1697. many of the commands

  1698. of Jesus

1699. and you can feel him

  1700. and know him

  1701. speaking to your heart

  1702. and to your mind

  1703. and you can say,

  1704. well,

  1705. no thanks.

1706. Not that kind of Christianity.

1707. To not lose your life

1708. is to not surrender it

  1709. to Jesus Christ.

1710. And what I want us

1711. to consider just for a moment

  1712. is why.

  1713. Why would we not

  1714. surrender our lives

  1715. to Jesus Christ?

  1716. Why would we not

1717. be willing to go through

1718. all this pain and agony

  1719. and all this suffering

  1720. and self-denial?

1721. Should it lead to that

1722. or at least be willing?

  1723. Well,

  1724. the answer that Jesus

  1725. gives us here

  1726. is that

  1727. that people

  1728. will not make

  1729. these sacrifices

  1730. because they hope

  1731. to gain the world.

  1732. What shall it profit

  1733. a man

  1734. if he shall gain

  1735. the whole world?

1736. So that is the context

  1737. here.

  1738. And that is often

  1739. what stops people

  1740. becoming Christians

  1741. or being faithful

  1742. in their Christianity.

  1743. Again,

  1744. not that they're not

  1745. persuaded intellectually

1746. and not that they're not

  1747. moved under the truth

  1748. but that they're just

  1749. not willing.

  1750. And you know,

  1751. nobody expects

1752. to gain the whole world

  1753. and you don't expect

1754. to gain the whole world

  1755. but we expect

1756. to gain parts of it,

1757. to annex parts of it

  1758. to ourselves,

  1759. to claim things,

  1760. people,

  1761. places,

  1762. as our own.

  1763. And for these things

  1764. we live.

  1765. We live for family,

  1766. for friends.

  1767. People live for comfort,

  1768. for power,

  1769. for wealth,

  1770. for success.

  1771. People in our day,

  1772. friends,

1773. they live for the holidays

  1774. that they go on.

1775. They just plow their way

1776. through the rest of the year

  1777. and then they've got

  1778. these times of holidays

1779. that they look forward to

1780. and they think of little else

  1781. and then oftentimes

  1782. before they've even

1783. come away from their holiday

  1784. they're booking

1785. and planning their next one.

  1786. People live for beauty,

  1787. for reputation,

  1788. for acclaim,

  1789. for praise.

1790. All parts of the world

1791. that we seek to annex

  1792. for ourselves.

1793. And that's where people today,

  1794. and there are things

  1795. I've missed out,

  1796. I'm sure,

  1797. but generally speaking

  1798. that's where people

  1799. are seeking their satisfaction.

  1800. It's where they're seeking

  1801. their fulfillment in life.

  1802. That's where people

  1803. are looking for happiness.

  1804. And many people

  1805. will tell you

1806. that this is what life

  1807. is all about.

  1808. These things.

  1809. And of course

  1810. they look for happiness

  1811. in these things

1812. and they don't find it.

  1813. I was reading

  1814. not that long ago

  1815. an article

  1816. an article about

  1817. why rich people

  1818. aren't happy.

  1819. And studies

  1820. had been done

  1821. and surveys

  1822. had been taken

1823. and there was a man

  1824. called,

  1825. he was a,

  1826. I think he was a Jew

  1827. living in America

  1828. but Russian by birth

  1829. and he's a novelist

1830. but for one of his novels

1831. he did a great amount

  1832. of research

  1833. into rich people

1834. and whether they are happy

1835. or whether they're not happy.

  1836. And he said

1837. at the end of it

  1838. he said

  1839. here were people

  1840. who could purchase

  1841. anything they wanted

  1842. and whose wealth

  1843. was widely envied

  1844. by others

  1845. and yet even

  1846. they weren't content.

  1847. They weren't content.

  1848. And he went on

  1849. to say that

1850. at the end of the day

  1851. I was just happy

  1852. to end this research

  1853. because it was

  1854. quite depressing.

1855. People who had it all

1856. who had all the things

1857. that perhaps we would like

  1858. for ourselves

  1859. who had the money

  1860. to buy them

  1861. who had the time

  1862. to do them

1863. and yet who weren't happy.

  1864. And there was

  1865. another survey

1866. done around the same time

  1867. with billionaires

  1868. and with millionaires

  1869. to see how happy

  1870. they were

  1871. and they were told

  1872. to give an answer

  1873. out of ten

  1874. and most of them

  1875. were around four

  1876. some five.

  1877. Very famously

  1878. I can't remember his name

  1879. but the man

  1880. who founded

  1881. Phones for You

  1882. a billionaire

  1883. he said that often

1884. he was at one or two.

  1885. One or two

  1886. out of ten.

  1887. Many of us

  1888. don't remember it

  1889. if we're young enough

  1890. but we've all heard

  1891. the song

  1892. by the Rolling Stones

  1893. I Can't Get No Satisfaction.

  1894. What's interesting

  1895. about that song

  1896. is that here were

  1897. a people

1898. on top of the world

  1899. here were a people

  1900. who were rich

  1901. who were again

1902. envied by many other people

  1903. who had everything

  1904. that the world

  1905. teaches us

1906. to think that we want

  1907. and yet they were

  1908. singing this song

  1909. I can't get

  1910. I'm not satisfied

  1911. by it

  1912. everything that I have

  1913. it doesn't satisfy me

  1914. and what was even

  1915. more interesting

  1916. is that everybody

  1917. sang along to this

  1918. they weren't thinking

  1919. what on earth

  1920. are these people

  1921. talking about

  1922. they've got everything

  1923. that they're not satisfied

  1924. no they sang along

1925. they knew what it meant

  1926. they knew exactly

1927. what they were talking about

  1928. and yet

  1929. they

  1930. and indeed

  1931. we to an extent

  1932. continue

  1933. to chase after

  1934. these things

  1935. in the world

  1936. to think

  1937. that the world

  1938. can fulfill us

  1939. that if we just

  1940. try harder

  1941. and try things

  1942. a little differently

  1943. that we can get

  1944. the world

  1945. to work for us

  1946. and you know

  1947. that's why

  1948. it's all consuming

  1949. because it's always

  1950. promising us more

  1951. always promising us better

  1952. and yet never delivering

  1953. there was another

  1954. another survey done

  1955. by a guy called

  1956. Michael Norton

  1957. who's a professor

  1958. in Harvard

  1959. in America

  1960. and he's done

  1961. a lot of work

  1962. on wealth

  1963. and happiness

  1964. and he asked people

  1965. a question

  1966. and again

  1967. it was millionaires

  1968. and billionaires

  1969. how much more

  1970. if you're not happy

  1971. how much more

  1972. would you need

  1973. to be happy

  1974. and he said

  1975. basically everybody

  1976. in that survey

  1977. whether they had

  1978. a million dollars

  1979. to their name

  1980. or whether they were

  1981. billionaires

  1982. basically every single

  1983. one of them

  1984. needed two to three

  1985. times more

  1986. than they already had

  1987. in order

  1988. to be happy

  1989. and then they thought

  1990. well I'll be happy

  1991. I'll be fulfilled

  1992. I'll be satisfied

  1993. then

  1994. and do you think

  1995. they were

  1996. do you think

  1997. that this is what

  1998. life is all about

  1999. and I'm just not

  2000. talking about money

  2001. I'm sure there

  2002. probably aren't

  2003. many millionaires

  2004. in here today

  2005. and yet

  2006. we have our own

  2007. goals

  2008. aspirations

  2009. desires

  2010. perhaps even

  2011. idols

  2012. do these things

  2013. make us happy

  2014. outside of Christ

  2015. you know

  2016. you sometimes

  2017. you may be

  2018. sitting in a sun

  2019. lounge

  2020. if you're on a

  2021. holiday

  2022. or you're

  2023. maybe out for a

  2024. walk in the

  2025. castle grounds

  2026. or you're sitting

  2027. before the fire

  2028. at night

  2029. or you're out

  2030. in the garage

  2031. and you're doing

  2032. what you want

  2033. to do

  2034. and you sit back

  2035. and you say

  2036. to yourself

  2037. well this is

  2038. the life

  2039. this is the

  2040. life

  2041. but is it

  2042. is that the

  2043. life

  2044. really

  2045. sitting in a

  2046. sun lounge

  2047. working in a

  2048. garage

  2049. out for a

  2050. walk

  2051. now these things

  2052. are good

  2053. they're all very

  2054. good

  2055. but is that

  2056. what life

  2057. is all about

  2058. do you really

  2059. think that is

  2060. what life

  2061. is all about

  2062. you remember

  2063. what Jesus

  2064. said in his

  2065. high priestly

  2066. prayer in

  2067. John 17

  2068. he said

  2069. this is life

  2070. eternal

  2071. in other words

  2072. this is what

  2073. life is

  2074. this is what

  2075. life is all

  2076. about

  2077. that they

  2078. might know

  2079. thee the only

  2080. true God

  2081. and Jesus

  2082. Christ

  2083. whom you

  2084. have sent

  2085. that's what

  2086. life is

  2087. to know

  2088. God

  2089. to know

  2090. Jesus

  2091. that is what

  2092. life is all

  2093. about

  2094. that is why

  2095. we have been

  2096. made

  2097. that is a

  2098. purpose

  2099. for which

  2100. we have been

  2101. made

  2102. to glorify

  2103. God

  2104. and to

  2105. enjoy him

  2106. forever

  2107. and so to

  2108. live for the

  2109. world

  2110. and bear in

  2111. mind that

  2112. living for the

  2113. world and

  2114. living for

  2115. Christ are

  2116. mutually

  2117. exclusive

  2118. to live for

  2119. the world

  2120. instead of

  2121. living for

  2122. Christ

  2123. isn't

  2124. the life

  2125. it's to

  2126. miss out

  2127. on life

  2128. it is to

  2129. miss out

  2130. on the

  2131. point of

  2132. life

  2133. and it

  2134. is to

  2135. remain

  2136. unsatisfied

  2137. unfulfilled

  2138. unhappy

  2139. you know

  2140. we have

  2141. seen

  2142. that the

  2143. nature

  2144. of

  2145. discipleship

  2146. takes

  2147. in

  2148. hard

  2149. things

  2150. but I

  2151. don't mean

  2152. to paint

  2153. a dark

  2154. picture

  2155. there is

  2156. joy in

  2157. self-denial

  2158. there is

  2159. joy in

  2160. taking up

  2161. your cross

  2162. there is

  2163. great joy

  2164. heavenly joy

  2165. and peace

  2166. in following

  2167. Jesus

  2168. even when

  2169. that means

  2170. that there

  2171. are hard

  2172. decisions

  2173. to be

  2174. made

  2175. but let

  2176. us notice

  2177. this too

  2178. at the

  2179. flip side

  2180. of living

  2181. to gain

  2182. this world

  2183. is that

  2184. you must

  2185. lose

  2186. your soul

  2187. and that's

  2188. what we

  2189. read

  2190. Jesus

  2191. says

  2192. for whoever

  2193. would save

  2194. his life

  2195. will lose

  2196. it

  2197. and what

  2198. does it

  2199. profit a

  2200. man to

  2201. gain the

  2202. whole world

  2203. and forfeit

  2204. his life

  2205. or as

  2206. it's put

  2207. elsewhere

  2208. to lose

  2209. his own

  2210. soul

  2211. what will

  2212. it profit

  2213. you at

  2214. the end

  2215. of the

  2216. day

  2217. if you

  2218. gain

  2219. this

  2220. whole

  2221. world

  2222. and yet

  2223. lose

  2224. your own

  2225. soul

  2226. but what

  2227. does that

  2228. mean

  2229. I remember

  2230. once

  2231. speaking to

  2232. somebody

  2233. somebody

  2234. who was

  2235. working

  2236. in the

  2237. service

  2238. industry

  2239. and this

  2240. woman

  2241. was

  2242. slightly

  2243. annoyed

  2244. living

  2245. in this

  2246. town

  2247. and she

  2248. was annoyed

  2249. with the

  2250. amount

  2251. of Christians

  2252. who would

  2253. say to

  2254. her

  2255. how is

  2256. your soul

  2257. and she

  2258. didn't like

  2259. this she

  2260. didn't like

  2261. being challenged

  2262. in that

  2263. kind of

  2264. way

  2265. and she

  2266. made a

  2267. flippant

  2268. kind of

  2269. remark

  2270. about her

  2271. soul

  2272. about she

  2273. didn't even

  2274. know where

  2275. her soul

  2276. was

  2277. and I

  2278. remember

  2279. asking her

  2280. do you

  2281. know what

  2282. your soul

  2283. is

  2284. and she

  2285. stopped

  2286. and she

  2287. said

  2288. well

  2289. well actually

  2290. no I

  2291. don't really

  2292. know what

  2293. a soul

  2294. is

  2295. the soul

  2296. friends

  2297. is

  2298. your

  2299. personality

  2300. it is

  2301. your

  2302. consciousness

  2303. it is

  2304. your

  2305. thought

  2306. process

  2307. it is

  2308. you

  2309. that's

  2310. what the

  2311. soul

  2312. is

  2313. your

  2314. body

  2315. will

  2316. die

  2317. and yet

  2318. your soul

  2319. is the

  2320. part of

  2321. you

  2322. which

  2323. shall

  2324. be

  2325. conscious

  2326. throughout

  2327. all

  2328. eternity

  2329. it is

  2330. a part

  2331. of

  2332. you

  2333. which

  2334. is

  2335. immortal

  2336. it

  2337. is

  2338. a part

  2339. of

  2340. you

  2341. which

  2342. never

  2343. dies

  2344. and so

  2345. to lose

  2346. your soul

  2347. if your soul

  2348. is immortal

  2349. isn't for you

  2350. to have no soul

  2351. anymore

  2352. that's impossible

  2353. and so what

  2354. does it mean

  2355. to lose

  2356. your soul

  2357. to lose

  2358. your

  2359. personality

  2360. to lose

  2361. your thought

  2362. processes

  2363. what does

  2364. that mean

  2365. well

  2366. it doesn't mean

  2367. to cease

  2368. to have them

  2369. to cease

  2370. to have a

  2371. personality

  2372. to cease

  2373. to be

  2374. a

  2375. person

  2376. we're

  2377. actually

  2378. told

  2379. in the

  2380. context

  2381. what it

  2382. means

  2383. verse 38

  2384. for whoever

  2385. is ashamed

  2386. of me

  2387. and of

  2388. my words

  2389. in this

  2390. adulterous

  2391. and sinful

  2392. generation

  2393. of whom

  2394. will the

  2395. son of

  2396. man

  2397. be ashamed

  2398. when he

  2399. comes

  2400. in the

  2401. glory

  2402. of his

  2403. father

  2404. with the

  2405. holy

  2406. angels

  2407. what

  2408. Jesus

  2409. is saying

  2410. is this

  2411. life

  2412. will

  2413. shortly

  2414. end

  2415. for each

  2416. and every

  2417. one of

  2418. us

  2419. and we

  2420. shall

  2421. all stand

  2422. before the

  2423. judgment

  2424. seat of

  2425. Christ

  2426. revelation

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  2427. chapter 20

  2428. tells us

  2429. that we

  2430. shall stand

  2431. before a

  2432. great white

  2433. throne

  2434. and the

  2435. books

  2436. shall be

  2437. opened

  2438. and everything

  2439. that we

  2440. have done

  2441. and everything

  2442. that we

  2443. have said

  2444. and everything

  2445. that we

  2446. have thought

  2447. even the

  2448. secrets

  2449. of our

  2450. hearts

  2451. will be

  2452. laid bare

  2453. before this

  2454. great judge

  2455. and then we

  2456. shall be

  2457. judged

  2458. and we

  2459. shall be

  2460. judged

  2461. on the basis

  2462. of what we

  2463. did with

  2464. Jesus

  2465. and what we

  2466. did with

  2467. his words

  2468. what a

  2469. response was

  2470. what was the

  2471. response of

  2472. your heart

  2473. did you

  2474. believe

  2475. what was the

  2476. response of

  2477. your life

  2478. did you

  2479. live it

  2480. out

  2481. did you

  2482. respond with

  2483. faith

  2484. or did you

  2485. respond with

  2486. unbelief

  2487. that's what

  2488. you will be

  2489. judged on

  2490. the deeds

  2491. done in the

  2492. body

  2493. Paul says

  2494. whether they

  2495. be good

  2496. or bad

  2497. and the

  2498. reality of

  2499. it is this

  2500. if you

  2501. have disregarded

  2502. your soul

  2503. and the needs

  2504. of your soul

  2505. if you have

  2506. been ashamed

  2507. to own

  2508. Jesus Christ

  2509. as yours

  2510. to deny

  2511. yourself

  2512. and to

  2513. take up

  2514. your cross

  2515. and to

  2516. follow him

  2517. then your

  2518. soul will

  2519. be lost

  2520. eternally

  2521. and it

  2522. will be

  2523. lost

  2524. eternally

  2525. we read

  2526. in the

  2527. rest of

  2528. scripture

  2529. when you

  2530. lift up

  2531. your eyes

  2532. in hell

  2533. as the

  2534. rich man

  2535. in the

  2536. story of

  2537. the rich

  2538. man

  2539. and Lazarus

  2540. the rich

  2541. man who

  2542. had it

  2543. all

  2544. the rich

  2545. man who

  2546. lived in

  2547. the nicest

  2548. house

  2549. and who

  2550. ate the

  2551. best food

  2552. and who

  2553. wore the

  2554. nicest

  2555. of

  2556. clothes

  2557. we're

  2558. told that

  2559. he died

  2560. and that

  2561. he lifted

  2562. up his

  2563. eyes

  2564. in

  2565. torments

  2566. that's

  2567. what it

  2568. means

  2569. friends

  2570. to lose

  2571. your soul

  2572. the rich

  2573. man was

  2574. conscious

  2575. in hell

  2576. and yet

  2577. it was to

  2578. him a

  2579. place of

  2580. weeping

  2581. and gnashing

  2582. of teeth

  2583. a place

  2584. of

  2585. outer

  2586. and utter

  2587. darkness

  2588. that's

  2589. what it

  2590. means

  2591. friends

  2592. to lose

  2593. your soul

  2594. that's

  2595. what it

  2596. means

  2597. and so

  2598. I want

  2599. to

  2600. to just

  2601. wrap this

  2602. up with

  2603. one final

  2604. and very

  2605. brief

  2606. point

  2607. and that

  2608. is the

  2609. choice

  2610. of

  2611. discipleship

  2612. because we

  2613. read in

  2614. verse 37

  2615. what can a

  2616. man give

  2617. in return

  2618. for his

  2619. life

  2620. or what

  2621. can a man

  2622. give in

  2623. exchange

  2624. for his

  2625. soul

  2626. what is

  2627. your soul

  2628. worth

  2629. you know

  2630. we

  2631. we live

  2632. in a day

  2633. when

  2634. people are

  2635. used to

  2636. exchanging

  2637. things

  2638. to buying

  2639. and selling

  2640. I think

  2641. that's

  2642. even

  2643. changed

  2644. in the

  2645. last few

  2646. years

  2647. many

  2648. people

  2649. now

  2650. use

  2651. things

  2652. like

  2653. vintage

  2654. and

  2655. ebay

  2656. they

  2657. see a

  2658. pair

  2659. of

  2660. trainers

  2661. or a

  2662. pair

  2663. of

  2664. trousers

  2665. whatever

  2666. it

  2667. might

  2668. be

  2669. and

  2670. they

  2671. think

  2672. well

  2673. I

  2674. could

  2675. sell

  2676. that

  2677. and

  2678. they

  2679. put

  2680. it

  2681. on

  2682. for

  2683. say

  2684. ten

  2685. pounds

  2686. and

  2687. hopefully

  2688. they'll

  2689. get

  2690. that

  2691. and

  2692. the

  2693. money

  2694. they

  2695. get

  2696. and

  2697. they

  2698. can

  2699. use

  2700. that

  2701. money

  2702. to

  2703. buy

  2704. another

  2705. many

  2706. people

  2707. that's

  2708. what

  2709. we're

  2710. used

  2711. to

  2712. and

  2713. the

  2714. important

  2715. thing

  2716. there

  2717. is

  2718. that

  2719. you

  2720. get

  2721. what

  2722. it's

  2723. worth

  2724. that

  2725. you

  2726. get

  2727. what

  2728. the

  2729. trousers

  2730. are

  2731. worth

  2732. and

  2733. that

  2734. what

  2735. you

  2736. buy

  2737. with

  2738. the

  2739. money

  2740. that

  2741. is

  2742. worth

  2743. at

  2744. least

  2745. as

  2746. good

  2747. as

  2748. what

  2749. you

  2750. sold

  2751. or

  2752. hopefully

  2753. even

  2754. better

  2755. but

  2756. the

  2757. great

  2758. question

  2759. here

  2760. the

  2761. great

  2762. exchange

  2763. question

  2764. here

  2765. is

  2766. what

  2767. is

  2768. your

  2769. soul

  2770. worth

  2771. is

  2772. your

  2773. soul

  2774. worth

  2775. is

  2776. anything

  2777. so

  2778. valuable

  2779. as

  2780. your

  2781. soul

  2782. is

  2783. anything

  2784. more

  2785. precious

  2786. than

  2787. that

  2788. because

  2789. what

  2790. Jesus

  2791. is

  2792. saying

  2793. here

  2794. and

  2795. bear

  2796. this

  2797. in

  2798. mind

  2799. and

  2800. never

  2801. forget

  2802. it

  2803. he's

  2804. saying

  2805. that

  2806. your

  2807. soul

  2808. is

  2809. worth

  2810. more

  2811. than

  2812. this

  2813. world

  2814. what

  2815. shall

  2816. it

  2817. profit

  2818. a

  2819. man

  2820. if

  2821. he

  2822. shall

  2823. gain

  2824. the

  2825. whole

  2826. world

  2827. and

  2828. lose

  2829. his

  2830. own

  2831. soul

  2832. your

  2833. soul

  2834. is

  2835. worth

  2836. more

  2837. than

  2838. the

  2839. world

  2840. and

  2841. he

  2842. made

  2843. the

  2844. world

  2845. and

  2846. he

  2847. knows

  2848. what

  2849. the

  2850. world

  2851. is

  2852. worth

  2853. and

  2854. he

  2855. knows

  2856. that

  2857. your

  2858. soul

  2859. is

  2860. worth

  2861. more

  2862. than

  2863. that

  2864. because

  2865. the

  2866. world

  2867. is

  2868. fleeting

  2869. its

  2870. gold

  2871. and

  2872. silver

  2873. will

  2874. perish

  2875. its

  2876. treasure

  2877. will

  2878. rust

  2879. and

  2880. corrupt

  2881. And

  2882. all

  2883. of it

  2884. at

  2885. the

  2886. end

  2887. of

  2888. the

  2889. day

  2890. will

  2891. be

  2892. consumed

  2893. by

  2894. fire

  2895. and

  2896. as

  2897. we

  2898. read

  2899. in

  2900. Psalm

  2901. 49

  2902. as

  2903. we

  2904. sang

  2905. you

  2906. will

  2907. die

  2908. and

  2909. you

  2910. leave

  2911. all

  2912. these

  2913. things

  2914. behind

  2915. you

  2916. and

  2917. you

  2918. don't

  2919. know

  2920. who's

  2921. going

  2922. to

  2923. get

  2924. them

  2925. you

  2926. don't

  2927. know

  2928. who's

  2929. going

  2930. to

  2931. live

  2932. in

  2933. your

  2934. house

  2935. when

  2936. you

  2937. die

  2938. you

  2939. might

  2940. have

  2941. an

  2942. idea

  2943. but

  2944. you

  2945. don't

  2946. know

  2947. who's

  2948. going

  2949. to

  2950. inherit

  2951. your

  2952. money

  2953. who's

  2954. going

  2955. to

  2956. spend

  2957. your

  2958. money

  2959. who's

  2960. going

  2961. to

  2962. drive

  2963. your

  2964. car

  2965. you

  2966. don't

  2967. know

  2968. any

  2969. of

  2970. these

  2971. things

  2972. and

  2973. neither

  2974. do

  2975. I

  2976. it's

  2977. all

  2978. fleeting

  2979. but

  2980. what

  2981. is

  2982. the

  2983. soul

  2984. worth

  2985. well

  2986. Genesis

  2987. 1

  2988. tells

  2989. us

  2990. that

  2991. your

  2992. soul

  2993. to

  2994. buy

  2995. it

  2996. back

  2997. what

  2998. did

  2999. it

  3000. cost

  3001. we

  3002. were

  3003. redeemed

  3004. not

  3005. with

  3006. corruptible

  3007. things

  3008. as

  3009. silver

  3010. and

  3011. gold

  3012. but

  3013. with

  3014. the

  3015. precious

  3016. blood

  3017. of

  3018. Christ

  3019. that's

  3020. what

  3021. your

  3022. soul

  3023. was

  3024. worth

  3025. and

  3026. who

  3027. can

  3028. put

  3029. a

  3030. price

  3031. on

  3032. the

  3033. precious

  3034. blood

  3035. of

  3036. Christ

  3037. you

  3038. know

  3039. friends

  3040. compared

  3041. to

  3042. your

  3043. soul

  3044. this

  3045. world

  3046. as

  3047. Daniel

  3048. told

  3049. Belshazzar

  3050. is

  3051. weighed

  3052. in the

  3053. balances

  3054. and

  3055. it

  3056. is

  3057. found

  3058. wanting

  3059. it

  3060. is

  3061. nothing

  3062. the

  3063. two

  3064. things

  3065. are

  3066. incompatible

  3067. let

  3068. me

  3069. ask

  3070. you

  3071. just

  3072. finally

  3073. what

  3074. would

  3075. you

  3076. really

  3077. love

  3078. in

  3079. this

  3080. life

  3081. we've

  3082. all

  3083. got

  3084. things

  3085. in

  3086. our

  3087. lives

  3088. which

  3089. we

  3090. wish

  3091. would

  3092. change

  3093. what

  3094. would

  3095. make

  3096. you

  3097. happy

  3098. perhaps

  3099. it

  3100. was

  3101. it's

  3102. better

  3103. health

  3104. maybe

  3105. it's

  3106. beauty

  3107. maybe

  3108. it's

  3109. just

  3110. to be

  3111. a bit

  3112. more

  3113. comfortable

  3114. to be

  3115. a bit

  3116. more

  3117. secure

  3118. to get

  3119. a promotion

  3120. at work

  3121. or to

  3122. be

  3123. respected

  3124. at work

  3125. more than

  3126. you are

  3127. to have

  3128. more

  3129. time off

  3130. to have

  3131. more time

  3132. with the

  3133. family

  3134. maybe it's

  3135. that the

  3136. family

  3137. circumstances

  3138. would be

  3139. better

  3140. maybe there's

  3141. some sort

  3142. of breach

  3143. in the

  3144. family

  3145. that there

  3146. might be

  3147. a reconciliation

  3148. that's

  3149. what you

  3150. want

  3151. maybe it's

  3152. riches

  3153. maybe it's

  3154. a new car

  3155. a new barn

  3156. I don't know

  3157. what it is

  3158. you know

  3159. what it is

  3160. but imagine

  3161. that you got

  3162. all of that

  3163. and that it

  3164. all from

  3165. tomorrow morning

  3166. you get up

  3167. in the morning

  3168. and it all

  3169. just started

  3170. to fall

  3171. in place

  3172. you got

  3173. an inheritance

  3174. the family

  3175. situation

  3176. just sorted

  3177. itself out

  3178. you got

  3179. a clean

  3180. bill of

  3181. health

  3182. everything

  3183. just went

  3184. as you

  3185. wanted

  3186. it to

  3187. go

  3188. every wish

  3189. was fulfilled

  3190. and that

  3191. for the rest

  3192. of your

  3193. life

  3194. and then

  3195. down the

  3196. line

  3197. say you're

  3198. 88 years

  3199. old

  3200. you've

  3201. had a

  3202. good life

  3203. and you

  3204. die

  3205. peacefully

  3206. in your

  3207. sleep

  3208. and yet

  3209. that out

  3210. of Christ

  3211. not a

  3212. Christian

  3213. do you

  3214. think that

  3215. would have

  3216. been a

  3217. life well

  3218. lived

  3219. people are

  3220. walking down

  3221. Francis

  3222. Street

  3223. behind your

  3224. coffin

  3225. and they're

  3226. all speaking

  3227. well of you

  3228. and how good

  3229. a person

  3230. you were

  3231. is that a

  3232. life well

  3233. lived

  3234. or is it a

  3235. life wasted

  3236. because you see

  3237. now that all of

  3238. these things

  3239. are gone

  3240. are they really

  3241. worth it

  3242. were they really

  3243. worth the

  3244. exchange of

  3245. your soul

  3246. were they really

  3247. worth if they

  3248. meant denying

  3249. Christ

  3250. was this

  3251. perfect life

  3252. having all

  3253. that you had

  3254. for that

  3255. beautiful

  3256. family round

  3257. about you

  3258. and all

  3259. men speaking

  3260. well of you

  3261. was it

  3262. worth eternity

  3263. in hell

  3264. as Jesus

  3265. says what

  3266. shall it

  3267. profit a

  3268. man

  3269. what shall

  3270. it profit

  3271. you friend

  3272. if you

  3273. gain the

  3274. whole world

  3275. and get

  3276. all these

  3277. things that

  3278. you're seeking

  3279. after and

  3280. yet lose

  3281. your own

  3282. soul

  3283. you know

  3284. the pleasures

  3285. of sin are

  3286. but for a

  3287. season

  3288. but the

  3289. soul is

  3290. eternal

  3291. and it

  3292. will live

  3293. on

  3294. and the

  3295. question that

  3296. I want to

  3297. leave with

  3298. you is

  3299. where will

  3300. it live

  3301. on

  3302. where

  3303. in heaven

  3304. or in

  3305. hell

  3306. what are

  3307. you investing

  3308. in

  3309. in this

  3310. world

  3311. or in the

  3312. next world

  3313. you see

  3314. what Jesus

  3315. is saying

  3316. to us

  3317. he's saying

  3318. and he doesn't

  3319. beat about the

  3320. bush

  3321. he's saying

  3322. Christianity

  3323. if you're going

  3324. to live it

  3325. as I want

  3326. you to live

  3327. it

  3328. it's going

  3329. to cost

  3330. you

  3331. and it's

  3332. not going

  3333. to be

  3334. an easy

  3335. road

  3336. but in

  3337. the long

  3338. run

  3339. not

  3340. becoming

  3341. a

  3342. Christian

  3343. and not

  3344. following

  3345. me

  3346. and not

  3347. denying

  3348. me

  3349. and taking

  3350. up

  3351. your

  3352. cross

  3353. is going

  3354. to cost

  3355. you

  3356. infinitely

  3357. and eternally

  3358. more

  3359. and so

  3360. friend

  3361. the choice

  3362. is yours

  3363. amen

  3364. let us

  3365. pray

  3366. gracious

  3367. and ever

  3368. blessed

  3369. God

  3370. as we

  3371. come under

  3372. the solemn

  3373. teaching of

  3374. the Lord

  3375. Jesus

  3376. Christ

  3377. help us

  3378. to

  3379. follow him

  3380. closely

  3381. and help

  3382. us to

  3383. count

  3384. that cost

  3385. and help

  3386. us to

  3387. yield

  3388. ourselves
