  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise in Psalm 100, the first version of the psalm, the Scottish Psalter, page 362, the Tunis Duke Street.

  2. Psalm 100, the first version, all people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice and say with mirth, his praise forth tell, come ye before a man rejoice, we'll stand to sing to God's praise.

  3. All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice, him said with mirth, his praise forth tell, come ye before them and rejoice.

  4. Know that the Lord is God indeed, where thy daily feet did us make.

  5. We are his hope, he doth the seed, and for his sheep he doth us take.

  6. Oh, enter then his gates with peace, approach with joy his courts unjewed.

  7. Praise God and bless this name always.

  8. Please, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if you pray, if

  9. O times firm he stood

  10. and shall proclaim to his endew.

  11. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  12. Let us pray.

  13. Lord, our gracious God,

  14. we come thankful for this day,

  15. a day that you have given to us,

  16. a day set aside for the great joy

  17. and privilege and delight

  18. of coming to worship you.

  19. We thank you for these words

  20. that we have sung together,

  21. that we are joining in

  22. with a multitude of people

  23. who sing praise to you this day,

  24. who come to worship you,

  25. to hear your word,

  26. your very voice speaking to us,

  27. for you are one who,

  28. your word is living and active,

  29. as it says,

  30. and we thank you

  31. that there is such power

  32. in your word

  33. to help us in all our daily needs

  34. and to remind us

  35. that you are God

  36. and there is no other.

  37. And help us today

  38. that we would come

  39. to love the Lord

  40. with all our heart

  41. and to love our neighbour

  42. as ourselves.

  43. As we think of

  44. who you are, Lord,

  45. your greatness,

  46. how great you are

  47. as creator of heaven and earth,

  48. and yet you're the one

  49. who draws near to us,

  50. the one who shepherds us.

  51. And we thank you too,

  52. Lord,

  53. that you give us

  54. people in our lives,

  55. you give us people

  56. around us,

  57. friends and families

  58. and neighbours

  59. and colleagues

  60. and even the strangers

  61. around us, Lord.

  62. We thank you

  63. for the world

  64. in which we live in,

  65. for the billions of people

  66. that there are in it,

  67. and everyone is known to you.

  68. And we pray, Lord,

  69. that you would give

  70. all people of this world

  71. a sense of wonder

  72. of who you are,

  73. but also a sense of love

  74. towards you.

  75. But I ask, well, Lord,

  76. that we would see

  77. a people loving

  78. their neighbours

  79. as themselves,

  80. that we would think

  81. of places

  82. where there are

  83. such difficulties

  84. and conflicts

  85. and wars

  86. and so many

  87. terrible things happening.

  88. We pray, Lord,

  89. for your gospel,

  90. the good news of God

  91. to help in every situation.

  92. So here is today, Lord,

  93. look down upon us.

  94. We thank you

  95. for our young people.

  96. We thank you

  97. for a time of holiday

  98. for the schools,

  99. and we pray

  100. that teachers

  101. and pupils

  102. and all the staff

  103. would be refreshed

  104. and encouraged

  105. in this time.

  106. May you bless

  107. and watch over

  108. all who come

  109. and go over these weeks.

  110. May you remember us

  111. in the church here

  112. as well as

  113. the holiday tweenies

  114. goes on

  115. and the creche

  116. goes on, Lord.

  117. We thank you

  118. for all who help

  119. in these things

  120. and for all who attend

  121. and even today

  122. that your spirit

  123. will be upon us

  124. to bless us.

  125. Watch over us

  126. then, we pray,

  127. and continue with us.

  128. It's all we ask.

  129. We ask for the forgiveness

  130. of our sin.

  131. In Jesus' name,

  132. Amen.

  133. It's good to see

  134. the young ones out today.

  135. I know it's a time

  136. of holiday

  137. and I hope you all

  138. enjoy a good holiday,

  139. a break from school.

  140. Some of you

  141. will be staying at home

  142. over the holiday time.

  143. Some will be going away.

  144. But I think of holiday time

  145. as a time

  146. just to take our eyes

  147. off the busyness

  148. of what's happening

  149. around us every day,

  150. whether it's school work.

  151. You maybe want to put

  152. that away for a while.

  153. But then you think to yourself,

  154. well, what am I going to do?

  155. What am I going to focus on?

  156. It's not just going to be

  157. sleep and eat, I hope.

  158. I hope there's going to be

  159. more than that.

  160. I'm sure some of you

  161. will be helping

  162. just now with lambing time.

  163. Some of you will be just

  164. maybe out and about

  165. doing different things.

  166. And whether it's at home

  167. or whether you're away,

  168. keep your eyes out

  169. for just different things

  170. you might see

  171. that you haven't seen before.

  172. And with that in mind,

  173. I think of just recently

  174. I was in Edinburgh.

  175. Hands up if you've ever

  176. been to Edinburgh.

  177. Anybody ever been to Edinburgh?

  178. Yeah, there's a few hands

  179. going up all right.

  180. Who's been on the Royal Mile?

  181. Anybody been on the Royal Mile?

  182. Do you know where that is?

  183. It's near the castle,

  184. Edinburgh Castle.

  185. The Royal Mile

  186. goes up towards it.

  187. It's that road.

  188. Well, I was at the

  189. free church offices,

  190. which are just beside

  191. the Royal Mile.

  192. And we had meetings there.

  193. And that's where I used

  194. to go to college

  195. when I was training

  196. to be a minister as well.

  197. And every day,

  198. I would be walking up

  199. and down the Royal Mile.

  200. Not the whole mile,

  201. but just a part of it

  202. to get to the college.

  203. And so when I was down

  204. just now,

  205. just recently,

  206. I was thinking about

  207. the number of times

  208. I'd walked up and down.

  209. And the many things

  210. I hadn't even noticed before.

  211. And a place I didn't often pass

  212. when I was down in college,

  213. but I passed this week,

  214. was a place called

  215. John Knox's House.

  216. Now, anybody heard of

  217. John Knox?

  218. He was a very famous

  219. Scottish minister

  220. a very long time ago

  221. in the 1500s.

  222. And he was used by God

  223. very powerfully in Scotland

  224. for the church in Scotland.

  225. And there was this house,

  226. it's called

  227. John Knox's House.

  228. And I thought,

  229. wow, that's interesting.

  230. It looks a very old building.

  231. And it is a very old building.

  232. Apparently,

  233. it was built in about 1470.

  234. So that's more than

  235. 500 years ago.

  236. He didn't always stay in it.

  237. There was somebody else in it

  238. before him.

  239. And what was amazing

  240. was on the outside

  241. of the walls,

  242. there was letters

  243. in gold.

  244. And I stopped

  245. and I started to think,

  246. I hadn't noticed that before.

  247. What does it say?

  248. Well, what it said was

  249. to love God above all

  250. and love your neighbour

  251. as yourself.

  252. And I thought,

  253. wow, that's amazing.

  254. Love God as yourself

  255. and love your neighbour,

  256. love God

  257. and love your neighbour

  258. as yourself.

  259. There's a verse

  260. from the Bible

  261. in gold

  262. on the side

  263. of this house.

  264. And it had been there

  265. since it was built.

  266. Now,

  267. in Edinburgh

  268. many years ago,

  269. there was a fire

  270. that destroyed

  271. many of the buildings

  272. around the Royal Mile.

  273. But this one stood.

  274. This one didn't get burnt down.

  275. It stood

  276. even in the midst of fire.

  277. And there's God's word

  278. still speaking to us.

  279. And the Royal Mile

  280. is called such

  281. because

  282. at the bottom

  283. of the Royal Mile

  284. is a palace,

  285. Holyrood Palace.

  286. And then on the top

  287. of the hill

  288. is Edinburgh Castle.

  289. And between that,

  290. the distance is a mile.

  291. And it's called

  292. a Royal Mile

  293. because the royalty

  294. would go from the palace

  295. to the castle

  296. and back and forth.

  297. And I was thinking,

  298. well, imagine

  299. how many of these royals

  300. and how many of the servants

  301. and how many of the people

  302. saw this verse?

  303. Love God above all else

  304. and your neighbour

  305. as yourself.

  306. A great reminder

  307. to all of us

  308. of what's important

  309. in life.

  310. And this is the text

  311. we're going to be looking at

  312. today in our service.

  313. Love the Lord your God

  314. with all your heart

  315. and your neighbour

  316. as yourself.

  317. It doesn't matter

  318. if you're royalty,

  319. it doesn't matter

  320. if you're a servant,

  321. it doesn't matter

  322. who you are,

  323. this is a great command

  324. to us all today.

  325. So keep your eyes peeled

  326. as to what you might see.

  327. Many buildings,

  328. many old places,

  329. they very often have

  330. Bible verses

  331. in there somewhere.

  332. And this one spoke to me

  333. that week

  334. just saying,

  335. love God

  336. above all else

  337. and love your neighbour

  338. as yourself.

  339. So may we be able

  340. to do that.

  341. Well,

  342. we're going to say

  343. the Lord's Prayer

  344. together now.

  345. Let's say the Lord's Prayer.

  346. Our Father,

  347. which art in heaven,

  348. hallowed be thy name.

  349. Thy kingdom come,

  350. thy will be done

  351. on earth

  352. as it is in heaven.

  353. Give us this day

  354. our daily bread

  355. and forgive us

  356. our debts

  357. as we forgive

  358. our debtors.

  359. And lead us

  360. not into temptation,

  361. but deliver us

  362. from evil.

  363. For thine is the kingdom,

  364. the power

  365. and the glory

  366. forever.

  367. Amen.

  368. We'll again

  369. sing to God's praise.

  370. Now we're going to sing

  371. in Psalm 92,

  372. again in the Scottish

  373. Psalter version.

  374. Psalm 92,

  375. page 352

  376. of the psalm books.

  377. We're going to sing

  378. from verse 1

  379. down to verse 6.

  380. The tune is Paisley.

  381. Psalm 92 at verse 1.

  382. To render thanks

  383. unto the Lord

  384. it is a comely thing

  385. unto thy name

  386. o thou most high

  387. due praise

  388. allowed to sing.

  389. We'll sing

  390. from verse 1

  391. to 6.

  392. To God's praise

  393. we stand to sing.

  394. Amen.

  395. To render thanks

  396. unto the Lord

  397. To desert the living

  398. And to thy name, O the Lord,

  399. To face the life to sing

  400. Thy loving kindness to show forth

  401. When shines the morning light

  402. And to declare thy faithfulness

  403. With pleasure every night

  404. On a tempting instrument

  405. Upon the solitary

  406. And on the harvest

  407. All ensign

  408. And gifts with melody

  409. For thy Lord, my mighty words

  410. Has made my heart my cloud

  411. And I will triumph in the words

  412. Which by thy hands were made

  413. How great Lord, thy words teach God

  414. Of high and deep it is

  415. And if thy thy name

  416. And if thy thy name

  417. Orthrophot

  418. We can turn together to read God's words in the Gospel of Mark, in chapter 12.

  419. We're going to take up our reading at verse 28, reading down to verse 40.

  420. Mark, chapter 12, at verse 28.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  421. In this passage we read there's a question that one of the scribes comes to Jesus with.

  422. And what has been happening up to this point is that there have been a number of people coming with questions to Jesus, trying to catch him out.

  423. You see at the end of chapter 11 at verse 27 there, the authority of Jesus was challenged.

  424. They tried to catch him out on his authority.

  425. And then in verse 13 of chapter 12, they've got a question about paying taxes to Caesar.

  426. So they're trying to catch him out politically.

  427. And then in verse 18, they ask about the resurrection.

  428. They're trying to catch him out on a theological point.

  429. So they're trying to catch Jesus out in all these different questions that they have.

  430. But then there's a sense of change as you come into verse 28 with this question that's asked of Jesus.

  431. And this is where we're going to focus our attention today.

  432. So at verse 28 we read,

  433. And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another.

  434. And seeing that he answered them well, asked him,

  435. Which commandment is the most important of all?

  436. Jesus answered,

  437. The most important is,

  438. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  439. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  440. with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.

  441. The second is this,

  442. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  443. There is no other commandment greater than these.

  444. And the scribes said to him,

  445. You are right, teacher.

  446. You have truly said that he is one,

  447. and there is no other besides him.

  448. And to love him with all the heart,

  449. and with all the understanding,

  450. and with all the strength,

  451. and to love one's neighbor as oneself,

  452. is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

  453. And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely,

  454. he said to him,

  455. You are not far from the kingdom of God.

  456. And after that,

  457. no one dared to ask him any more questions.

  458. And as Jesus taught in the temple,

  459. he said,

  460. How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?

  461. David himself,

  462. in the Holy Spirit,

  463. declared,

  464. The Lord said to my Lord,

  465. Sit at my right hand

  466. until I put your enemies under your feet.

  467. David himself calls him Lord.

  468. So how is he his son?

  469. And the great throng heard him gladly.

  470. And in his teaching,

  471. he said,

  472. Beware of the scribes

  473. who like to walk around in long robes,

  474. and like greetings in the marketplaces,

  475. and have the best seats in the synagogues,

  476. and the places of honor at feasts,

  477. who devour widows' houses,

  478. and for a pretense make long prayers.

  479. They will receive the greater condemnation.

  480. And so on.

  481. And may God add his blessing

  482. to that reading from his word.

  483. Well, let's again engage in prayer.

  484. We'll bow our heads in a word of prayer.

  485. Our gracious God,

  486. we do thank you for your word.

  487. We thank you for the wonder

  488. of how you continue to speak to us as a people,

  489. that you show grace towards us

  490. as undeserving sinners.

  491. And yet, Lord,

  492. you still desire that mercy upon us,

  493. that we would come and know you

  494. and love you with all our heart.

  495. And we pray today, Lord,

  496. that you would bless your word,

  497. that you would bless it

  498. not just in our hearing here,

  499. or to those who listen in online at home,

  500. or who at some point come to hear this service.

  501. We pray, Lord,

  502. that your word will be blessed

  503. to all ends of the earth.

  504. For we know that you have your people

  505. to all ends.

  506. You have your people near and far.

  507. That you are one who is building his church.

  508. And we thank you, Lord,

  509. that your kingdom comes with power.

  510. And even in the words that we've read,

  511. we're reminded of that kingdom

  512. and of how this scribe who came to Jesus

  513. with a question was told,

  514. you are not far from the kingdom of God.

  515. And it can often be a case

  516. where we feel close to your kingdom.

  517. But sometimes it's so near and yet so far.

  518. And we pray today, Lord,

  519. that for those who hear your voice

  520. and feel that there is still

  521. that little distance to be overcome,

  522. that you would help, Lord,

  523. that by your spirit,

  524. you would apply your words

  525. to each one of us

  526. to remind us of your kingdom

  527. and the way to your kingdom.

  528. That is to see that you have

  529. first loved us

  530. and given yourself for us.

  531. And that we would then come

  532. to love you with all our hearts.

  533. So bless us, Lord,

  534. around your word today.

  535. And remember us as a people.

  536. Remember us here

  537. and remember your people

  538. throughout all ends of the earth.

  539. So we thank you, Lord,

  540. for the power of prayer.

  541. We thank you for the many prayers

  542. that will be offered up to you today.

  543. Not just here,

  544. but through all your people

  545. in so many different languages

  546. and so many different places

  547. and so many different circumstances.

  548. We thank you that prayer is made to you.

  549. And we pray, Lord,

  550. that as the hearer of prayer,

  551. that you would answer

  552. and answer according to your will.

  553. And we pray, Lord,

  554. today just to see your kingdom

  555. come in power,

  556. to know that power of Christ

  557. in our midst,

  558. to know the power

  559. of the resurrection,

  560. to know the power of your word

  561. and your spirit working.

  562. And we pray, Lord,

  563. that indeed there would be

  564. much blessing and rejoicing

  565. to all ends of the earth today.

  566. May there be rejoicing

  567. in one sinner who repents

  568. and one who comes

  569. to know you and to love you.

  570. And we thank you, Lord,

  571. for all the kingdom work

  572. that you are doing.

  573. We thank you, Lord,

  574. for the way that you remind us

  575. that you are building your church.

  576. We think even of the Gambia partnership.

  577. Thankful for the very generous collection

  578. that was made

  579. and for the blessing that that is.

  580. It's not just to those

  581. who work with the Gambia partnership,

  582. but especially to those

  583. who receive the Bibles,

  584. whether they're written Bibles

  585. or audio Bibles.

  586. We thank you, Lord,

  587. for the great ways

  588. that your word goes out there.

  589. We pray that it would be blessed.

  590. We thank you for all belonging

  591. to our congregation here.

  592. And indeed, throughout our island,

  593. many people have visited there

  594. and seen the work going on

  595. and been involved in it.

  596. And we pray, Lord,

  597. that you will bless each one

  598. and encourage them in their hearts

  599. and help us to have

  600. that prayerful awareness

  601. of your people there.

  602. We thank too of Myanmar

  603. and Thailand at this time

  604. with the devastating earthquakes there.

  605. Having recently heard

  606. of the work of the gospel in Myanmar

  607. and thankful for your people there,

  608. we pray for all people there just now

  609. in the midst of the devastation

  610. that has been brought.

  611. The loss of life

  612. and those still missing.

  613. And we just pray, Lord,

  614. for your blessing over them,

  615. your help towards them.

  616. There and in Thailand as well, Lord,

  617. we just pray for even good

  618. to come out of even these circumstances

  619. that people would recognize

  620. their need of you

  621. and recognize that you alone are God

  622. who is able to help.

  623. We think too of the ongoing conflicts

  624. in the Middle East and the Ukraine

  625. and the devastation that that brings.

  626. And we just pray, Lord, for peace.

  627. We pray, Lord, to see

  628. your power at work in these places.

  629. We pray to see that, Lord,

  630. throughout our lands,

  631. to give wisdom and help

  632. to those who rule over us,

  633. to give blessing to people

  634. throughout our nations, Lord,

  635. to see their great need of Jesus,

  636. a Savior who has come into this world.

  637. I mean, as we think of Easter time

  638. and the way the gospel is heard

  639. in different places

  640. and in different ways,

  641. we thank you that there is still

  642. that heritage in our land

  643. that we are a Christian nation.

  644. And though we may have drifted

  645. very far from it,

  646. we thank you for the Christian influences

  647. around us,

  648. even the testimony of your word

  649. and of your grace

  650. down through the years.

  651. We pray, Lord,

  652. that in these days

  653. you will have mercy upon us

  654. and turn us again towards you.

  655. Continue to bless us

  656. as we worship you this day,

  657. Lord, look after us

  658. and all our loved ones

  659. as we commit each other

  660. into your hands.

  661. Remember those who are away

  662. at this time

  663. and those who will be coming

  664. and going over these weeks

  665. of holiday, Lord.

  666. Keep people safe and travel

  667. and watch over each one.

  668. Remember our community,

  669. so, Lord,

  670. we do pray for your help

  671. towards us as a people

  672. in all our different needs,

  673. those who are unwell,

  674. those who are anxious

  675. and afraid of the future

  676. and what changes might come

  677. into our lives.

  678. We think of those

  679. who are maybe awaiting test results

  680. or anxious about ill health,

  681. Lord.

  682. We pray for help towards them.

  683. And especially at this time,

  684. Lord,

  685. as we have seen so many deaths

  686. in our communities

  687. in this past week

  688. and even in this day

  689. and in the days ahead

  690. when there are so many funerals

  691. to take place,

  692. Lord,

  693. we do remember

  694. all who mourn

  695. and grieve at this time,

  696. asking for your comfort

  697. and your blessing

  698. over each one.

  699. Especially remember

  700. our undertakers

  701. at this time

  702. and what has been

  703. a particularly busy period,

  704. Lord.

  705. We pray for them,

  706. each one,

  707. that you will bless them

  708. in their hearts

  709. and in their souls.

  710. In the midst of

  711. seeing so much grief

  712. and sorrow,

  713. Lord,

  714. we pray that

  715. you would minister

  716. to their hearts

  717. and into their lives.

  718. We pray that

  719. for all who feel

  720. that voice of grief

  721. at this time,

  722. Lord,

  723. that you will be near

  724. to all such

  725. and just pray

  726. your blessing over them.

  727. Hear our prayers,

  728. Lord.

  729. Continue with us

  730. in this day

  731. and throughout it,

  732. Lord,

  733. may we be able

  734. to lift our eyes

  735. to Jesus

  736. and look on him,

  737. the one who came

  738. to die for our sins,

  739. but the one

  740. who is risen,

  741. who is ascended,

  742. who is at the right hand

  743. of God our Father.

  744. And we pray

  745. in his name

  746. all of these things

  747. with the forgiveness

  748. of our sins.

  749. In his precious name,

  750. Amen.

  751. We're going to sing

  752. to God's praise again

  753. before we turn back

  754. to look at this passage.

  755. We're singing in Psalm 43

  756. in the Sing Psalms.

  757. Psalm 43,

  758. we'll sing the whole

  759. of this psalm together.

  760. Page 54 of the psalm books,

  761. the tune is Finart.

  762. Come,

  763. vindicate me,

  764. O my God,

  765. against this nation.

  766. Plead my cause.

  767. Deliver me

  768. from wicked foes

  769. and hypocrites

  770. who break your laws.

  771. And then at verse 3,

  772. it says,

  773. send your light forth

  774. and your truth.

  775. Let them direct me

  776. in your grace

  777. and bring me

  778. to your holy hill

  779. and to your sacred

  780. dwelling place.

  781. We'll sing

  782. the whole of this psalm

  783. to God's praise

  784. and we stand to sing.

  785. Amen.

  786. Come,

  787. vindicate me,

  788. O my God,

  789. against this nation.

  790. Plead my cause.

  791. Deliver me

  792. from wicked foes

  793. and hypocrites

  794. who break your laws.

  795. You are my stronghold

  796. and my God.

  797. Why then have you

  798. rejected me?

  799. Why must I go

  800. about and leave

  801. down to the

  802. by the enemy?

  803. O Savior,

  804. I've forth

  805. found your truth.

  806. Let them direct me

  807. and bring me

  808. to your holy hill

  809. into your sacred

  810. dwelling place.

  811. then to God's altar

  812. I will go

  813. to God my joy

  814. and my delight

  815. and I will place you

  816. with the hand

  817. O God you are

  818. O God you are

  819. my Lord

  820. O my

  821. Why are you

  822. I will cast

  823. to my soul

  824. Why are you

  825. so

  826. disturbed

  827. in me

  828. Trust God

  829. for I

  830. will

  831. listen

  832. yet

  833. my

  834. Savior

  835. and

  836. my

  837. God

  838. is

  839. He

  840. Amen

  841. We can turn back to our reading in Mark chapter 12 and look at verse 28 in this section.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  842. Where one of the scribes came and had heard him disputing with one another and seeing that he answered them well asked him,

  843. which commandment is the most important of all?

  844. That's the question that we see here.

  845. And then we see Jesus answering the question.

  846. The most important is,

  847. Hear O Israel,

  848. the Lord our God,

  849. the Lord

  850. is one

  851. and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  852. with all your soul,

  853. with all your mind

  854. and with all your strength.

  855. And the second is this,

  856. you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  857. What's the best bit of advice you've ever been given?

  858. It might be something that's just stuck with you all your days since you heard it being given to you.

  859. Not the kind of advice that says,

  860. Why are you doing it like that?

  861. You should do it like this.

  862. It's that kind of annoying bit of advice we can often get frustrated with,

  863. but a bit of advice that's been given to you and you've thought,

  864. I need to listen to that.

  865. But did you listen?

  866. Are you still listening to it?

  867. It might have been a bit of advice about planning for the future,

  868. maybe financially planning your future.

  869. It might have been about what job to take or not to take as you were considering that.

  870. Maybe it's advice you're sort of hearing just now.

  871. If you're younger and you're thinking,

  872. What am I to do going forward?

  873. Am I going to go to university or college?

  874. Am I going to go to work?

  875. What should I do?

  876. And there's all kinds of advice being offered to you.

  877. In the midst of all this advice that's coming your way,

  878. the trouble is what to listen to.

  879. And do we listen to it?

  880. Somebody once put it like this,

  881. The trouble with good advice is that it usually interferes with your plans.

  882. That's often the sense that we get good advice often interferes with your plans.

  883. And when you think of the gospel and what Jesus says to us in the gospel,

  884. it isn't just advice.

  885. It's not just a bit of advice in the midst of what other people are offering to us.

  886. Here is an option for us to listen to.

  887. It's not advice.

  888. Yes, it's commands.

  889. And because it's commands,

  890. we have to ask ourselves,

  891. Are we listening to it?

  892. And as Jesus was speaking to the scribes and the Pharisees,

  893. as we're reading here,

  894. they were hearing what he was saying,

  895. and it was almost like they were taking it as advice.

  896. Here is an option for you.

  897. But what Jesus was saying,

  898. it's not advice,

  899. it's commands.

  900. And are you listening to these commands?

  901. And as we think of this setting of this passage before us,

  902. it's in the midst of Jesus' final week before the crucifixion.

  903. And if you like,

  904. tensions are running high.

  905. There are those who have seen and heard what Jesus was doing.

  906. They've marveled at him,

  907. and many have come to follow him.

  908. But there are those also who have seen him as more of a threat,

  909. someone that needs to be dealt with,

  910. someone that needs to be got rid of.

  911. And so there's this tension that's mounting.

  912. And ultimately,

  913. this tension is going to come to the point where Jesus is put onto the cross,

  914. where he's crucified.

  915. But before you come to that point,

  916. you see that they're trying to catch him out.

  917. They're determined to get something that they can hold against him.

  918. And that's what I was pointing out before we read,

  919. as you see at the end of chapter 11 and into chapter 12,

  920. they're trying to catch him out on all these different things.

  921. Whether it's his authority or political ways,

  922. paying taxes to Caesar,

  923. who are we to pay?

  924. Or the resurrection and questions of theology.

  925. They're trying to catch him out.

  926. Trying to catch him so that they can put down on him.

  927. But Jesus, as he answers all of these challenges,

  928. he comes to say that you do not know the Scriptures.

  929. You do not understand what the Word of God is saying.

  930. If you did, you wouldn't be asking these questions in this way.

  931. But then you come into verse 28.

  932. And there's this encounter of Jesus here,

  933. and one of the scribes who comes up to him.

  934. And they've heard this debate that's going on.

  935. And you sense there's just something different here.

  936. There's something more to this encounter than just trying to trick Jesus or catch him out.

  937. The question that we have here is more looking from the heart.

  938. Not to catch him out, but almost coming pleading with a help me understand kind of attitude.

  939. We're hearing what you're saying.

  940. And maybe it isn't just advice that we can choose whether we follow or not.

  941. Instead, is it a command that we are to obey?

  942. That's what's at the heart of this question.

  943. And it's an encounter with Jesus, with Jesus meeting this man.

  944. And he's got this question, this burning question in his heart.

  945. He wants to understand.

  946. So how do you come to the Word of God today?

  947. How do you come here today?

  948. Or how do you come as you tune in online to come and hear the Word of God?

  949. How are you approaching Jesus?

  950. Is it to come and find fault with him?

  951. To find something wrong with him?

  952. To find a reason to turn away from him?

  953. Or are you coming with that heart, seeking to understand?

  954. With that longing to come and see for yourself,

  955. Jesus, help me.

  956. Help me to understand what this means for my life.

  957. Well, Jesus, in the midst of this question that he's asked,

  958. gives a wonderful answer that goes right to the heart.

  959. It goes right to the heart of what it means to be saved.

  960. It goes right to the heart of what it means to worship.

  961. And so what Jesus says to this man and those who are hearing,

  962. in his hearing there as well,

  963. it is so much to say to us today.

  964. Even just thinking of the context of Jesus here,

  965. on his way to Jerusalem,

  966. on his way to the cross,

  967. to be crucified,

  968. knowing what's ahead of him.

  969. How we often see he has that heart for the people,

  970. that longing,

  971. that they would come to understand

  972. all that he has come to do.

  973. How he has come to show them such a great love,

  974. and that they are to show him that love in return.

  975. And we want to see three things

  976. from this passage together this morning.

  977. And the first thing we're going to look at

  978. is the question that's asked.

  979. And then secondly,

  980. we're going to look at the question answered.

  981. And then the third thing is

  982. we're going to think of the question applied.

  983. So the first thing we want to look at

  984. is the question that's asked.

  985. And where does this question come from?

  986. Where does this question come from?

  987. Which commandment is the most important of all

  988. is the question.

  989. Where does it come from?

  990. Well, the first thing we notice

  991. about the question asked

  992. is the one who asks the question.

  993. One of the scribes came up

  994. and heard them disputing with one another

  995. and seeing that he answered them well,

  996. asked him.

  997. So who is it that's asking this question?

  998. It's one of the scribes,

  999. one of the teachers of the law.

1000. He was one of those who would have been

1001. the group who were opposed to Jesus and his teaching.

1002. They were looking and seeing him

1003. almost as a threat to their authority,

  1004. to their position.

1005. They were the ones who had the law.

1006. They were the ones who told the people

1007. what they should do and not do.

1008. And so Jesus is a threat to them.

  1009. And yet with him,

  1010. with this scribe,

1011. there seems to be something different.

1012. He came up and heard them disputing with one another

1013. and seeing that he answered them well.

  1014. What Jesus was saying,

1015. it stood out to him.

1016. It made an impact on him.

1017. It started to open his mind

1018. to something that he was hearing,

  1019. something different

1020. and a different way for him to see things,

1021. seeing that he answered them well.

1022. And that's what being in the presence

1023. of Jesus can do to you.

1024. It can do to us all

1025. as we come into the presence of Jesus.

1026. We come to hear the word of God speaking to us.

1027. It reminds us of all that God has done well.

1028. All that God has done for us.

1029. What he heard from Jesus impacted upon him.

  1030. And to this day,

1031. that is what it does to people as well.

1032. No matter how opposed people might be at first,

1033. the word of God is powerful to speak.

1034. And we always need to have that

1035. in the back of our minds.

1036. Whatever we're doing for the Lord,

1037. whatever we're sharing the word of God,

1038. the word of God is powerful to speak.

1039. We think even of that encouragement

  1040. with the Gambia partnership

1041. and the Bibles going out there,

  1042. audio Bibles, written Bibles.

1043. That word is powerful to speak.

1044. A minister recently was sharing

1045. about a home Bible study group

1046. that we're meeting through his church.

1047. Different parts of a city they were meeting.

  1048. And in one group,

1049. a woman had come in who was an atheist.

1050. She didn't believe in God at all.

1051. And yet someone had spoken to her

1052. and told her about this group that was meeting

  1053. and invited her along.

  1054. Probably maybe wondering,

1055. I wonder, will she come?

1056. After all, she's an atheist.

1057. What interest would she have

1058. in the things of God?

  1059. And yet she did.

1060. She came along to this group.

1061. Came along one week and listened.

1062. And then she was back the next time as well.

1063. She began to enjoy hearing about the word of God,

  1064. hearing about Jesus,

1065. and beginning to question atheism.

  1066. Is there a God?

1067. Could this God be real?

1068. Is this word speaking to me

  1069. in a more powerful,

1070. in a more meaningful way?

  1071. And that's the power

  1072. that God's word has.

1073. That's what we see with this scribe

1074. who came to ask this question.

1075. He came having seen something in Jesus,

  1076. how he answered well

  1077. in all the disputes

1078. that they had been having.

1079. And so the second thing we see

  1080. about this man,

  1081. the question being asked,

1082. is that what he heard

  1083. was good.

  1084. And you see that

1085. in how he sees Jesus

1086. and he answered them well.

  1087. It wasn't just a clever answer

  1088. that Jesus was given.

1089. It means more than that.

1090. But he answered them well.

1091. There was something more powerful

1092. about what Jesus was saying

  1093. compared to anything else

  1094. that he was hearing.

  1095. This word was full.

  1096. What Jesus was saying

  1097. had no comeback.

  1098. We see that

1099. and how in all these different ways

  1100. he'd been asking questions.

1101. You see at the end of this section

  1102. in verse 34,

  1103. it says,

1104. after that no one dared

1105. to ask him any more questions.

  1106. What Jesus was saying

  1107. was complete.

  1108. It was good.

  1109. It was full.

  1110. There was no way

1111. of coming back against it.

1112. And that's what we can take

  1113. for ourselves as well

1114. of the word of God.

1115. It gives answers to us

1116. that are complete and full.

1117. Even the most searching questions

  1118. that we might have.

  1119. You have to give

1120. the word of God a chance.

1121. So many people just dismiss

  1122. God's word.

1123. They don't want to hear.

  1124. They think they know

  1125. the answers.

1126. But if you're truly wondering,

1127. what does the word of God say?

1128. Well, give it a chance.

1129. Have you given the word of God

  1130. a chance to speak

  1131. into your heart,

  1132. into your situation?

1133. Or have you just pushed it away

  1134. thinking you know

  1135. the answer already?

  1136. You think to yourself,

1137. what questions do I have

1138. that the Bible can answer?

  1139. Well, come and see

1140. the wonderful range of answers

1141. that the Bible gives to us

  1142. about life,

  1143. about death,

  1144. about eternity,

1145. about all the big issues

  1146. in life.

1147. We find the word of God

1148. speaks into every one of them.

  1149. It speaks truth.

  1150. It speaks well.

  1151. It speaks good.

1152. It speaks in a way

1153. that we have no way

1154. of coming back against it.

  1155. You almost might come

  1156. to the point

  1157. where you dare ask

  1158. no more questions

  1159. if you're against it

  1160. because you're afraid

1161. the answers might be given

  1162. to you.

  1163. If you could ask

1164. one thing of the Lord,

  1165. what would it be?

  1166. What question would you

1167. want to come and ask

  1168. the Lord?

  1169. Well, come with it.

1170. Give the word of God

  1171. a chance to answer

  1172. those questions.

1173. That's what this scribe does.

  1174. He has this question

1175. that he wants to ask.

  1176. And the third thing

1177. we see about the question

  1178. being asked,

  1179. it's a personal question.

  1180. It's something that's

  1181. very much weighing

  1182. heavy upon him.

  1183. Probably a question

  1184. he's maybe been

  1185. mulling over

  1186. in his own mind

  1187. long before he's heard

  1188. Jesus talking

  1189. at this point.

  1190. Wondering,

1191. is this really the way

  1192. we should be living?

  1193. You see,

1194. the question is so personal.

  1195. Which commandment

  1196. is the most important

  1197. of all?

1198. Why is he asking that?

1199. Why is he asking about

  1200. which commandment

  1201. is the most important

  1202. of all?

  1203. Well, because

  1204. as a scribe

1205. he was so used to

  1206. having hundreds

  1207. of laws,

  1208. hundreds of commandments

  1209. that he taught

  1210. the people

  1211. that this is how

  1212. you are to live.

  1213. There was more than

  1214. 600 laws

  1215. or commands

  1216. that the people

  1217. had to live by.

  1218. And there was

  1219. always discussion,

  1220. always debate

  1221. going on about

  1222. which were the most

  1223. important.

  1224. Some were of a

  1225. positive nature,

  1226. some of a negative

  1227. nature.

  1228. And then they were

  1229. divided into groups

  1230. of the heavy

  1231. and the light

  1232. commands.

  1233. And so they were

  1234. weighing down,

  1235. there was a heavy

  1236. burden on the people.

  1237. They couldn't agree

  1238. amongst themselves

  1239. which were the

  1240. most important

  1241. ones.

  1242. And so that's

  1243. what's behind

  1244. this question.

  1245. Which is the most,

  1246. which commandment

  1247. is the most

  1248. important

  1249. of all?

  1250. Of all the

  1251. hundreds

  1252. of commands

  1253. that we have,

  1254. which is the

  1255. most important

  1256. of all?

  1257. Which one

  1258. can we focus

  1259. on?

  1260. They loved

  1261. to debate.

  1262. debate.

  1263. They loved

  1264. to discuss

  1265. all these

  1266. different commands

  1267. but so often

  1268. they were just

  1269. weighing heavy.

  1270. And that's

  1271. often the case

  1272. with ourselves

  1273. as well.

  1274. The questions

  1275. we have

  1276. are ones

  1277. we might love

  1278. to debate

  1279. back and forth

  1280. and discuss

  1281. in different ways

  1282. but we have

  1283. to come to the

  1284. point and ask

  1285. ourselves

  1286. but which is

  1287. the most

  1288. important question?

  1289. What's the

  1290. most important

  1291. thing that we

  1292. have to focus

  1293. on?

  1294. What am I

  1295. to do?

  1296. That's what's

  1297. behind the

  1298. question that's

  1299. asked.

  1300. Which is the

  1301. most important

  1302. commandment?

  1303. Well we see

  1304. the answer

  1305. then is given.

  1306. It's the second

  1307. thing we see

  1308. the question

  1309. answered in

  1310. verse 29.

  1311. Jesus answered

  1312. the most

  1313. important is

  1314. hear O Israel

  1315. the Lord our

  1316. God the Lord

  1317. is one and

  1318. you shall

  1319. love the

  1320. Lord your

  1321. God with

  1322. all your

  1323. heart with

  1324. all your

  1325. soul with

  1326. all your

  1327. mind with

  1328. all your

  1329. strength.

  1330. And the

  1331. second is

  1332. this you

  1333. shall love

  1334. your neighbour

  1335. as yourself.

  1336. As well as

  1337. a good

  1338. question there

  1339. is a great

  1340. answer.

  1341. There is a

  1342. wonderful

  1343. answer given

  1344. and as is

  1345. often the

  1346. case with

  1347. Jesus he

  1348. doesn't bring

  1349. them something

  1350. new something

  1351. that they

  1352. might find

  1353. hard to

  1354. understand.

  1355. Instead he

  1356. reiterates

  1357. what's at

  1358. the heart

  1359. of the

  1360. gospel.

  1361. What's at

  1362. the heart

  1363. of what

  1364. they already

  1365. know from

  1366. the Old

  1367. Testament.

  1368. And what

  1369. he does

  1370. here is

  1371. bring them

  1372. right back

  1373. to the

  1374. very

  1375. teachings

  1376. that they

  1377. have

  1378. themselves.

  1379. In that

  1380. version 29

  1381. where it

  1382. says hear

  1383. O Israel

  1384. the Lord

  1385. our God

  1386. the Lord

  1387. is one.

  1388. That's a

  1389. prayer that

  1390. the Jews

  1391. had from

  1392. the Old

  1393. Testament

  1394. days.

  1395. Still have

  1396. to this

  1397. day.

  1398. It's called

  1399. the Shema.

  1400. And it's

  1401. a declaration

  1402. they make

  1403. every day

  1404. morning and

  1405. evening.

  1406. Those words

  1407. hear O

  1408. Israel the

  1409. Lord our

  1410. God the

  1411. Lord is

  1412. one.

  1413. It's a

  1414. declaration

  1415. there is

  1416. only one

  1417. God.

  1418. And it

  1419. goes right

  1420. back to

  1421. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  1422. chapter 6

  1423. hear O

  1424. Israel the

  1425. Lord our

  1426. God the

  1427. Lord is

  1428. one.

  1429. Love the

  1430. Lord your

  1431. God with

  1432. all your

  1433. heart with

  1434. all your

  1435. soul with

  1436. all your

  1437. strength.

  1438. these

  1439. commandments

  1440. that I

  1441. give to

  1442. you today

  1443. are to

  1444. be upon

  1445. your

  1446. heart.

  1447. So he

  1448. takes them

  1449. right back

  1450. to the

  1451. scriptures of

  1452. the Old

  1453. Testament and

  1454. there it

  1455. is this

  1456. prayer that

  1457. they already

  1458. knew.

  1459. Hear O

  1460. Israel the

  1461. Lord your

  1462. God the

  1463. Lord is

  1464. one.

  1465. You see

  1466. in the

  1467. midst of

  1468. asking all

  1469. our questions

  1470. in life

  1471. what do I

  1472. need to

  1473. do?

  1474. Where do I

  1475. need to

  1476. go?

  1477. How can

  1478. I find

  1479. this hope

  1480. this salvation

  1481. that Jesus

  1482. offers?

  1483. It's in

  1484. his truth.

  1485. It's in

  1486. his word.

  1487. It is here

  1488. before us.

  1489. And what

  1490. Jesus does

  1491. is he sums

  1492. up for them

  1493. here this

  1494. command.

  1495. He says

  1496. basically come

  1497. back to

  1498. this because

  1499. this is the

  1500. heart of our

  1501. relationship

  1502. with God.

  1503. It's not

  1504. about the

  1505. weighing down

  1506. of law.

  1507. It's not

  1508. about the

  1509. weighing down

  1510. of trying to

  1511. keep the

  1512. hundreds of

  1513. laws that

  1514. are before

  1515. you in

  1516. order to

  1517. be right

  1518. with God.

  1519. That's

  1520. not what

  1521. it's about.

  1522. It's not

  1523. about sacrifices.

  1524. It's not

  1525. about rewards.

  1526. It's not

  1527. about any

  1528. of these

  1529. things.

  1530. It's about

  1531. love the

  1532. Lord your

  1533. God with

  1534. all your

  1535. heart.

  1536. And love

  1537. your neighbor

  1538. as yourself.

  1539. love.

  1540. You wonder

  1541. what impact

  1542. this had

  1543. on not

  1544. just on

  1545. the scribe

  1546. but on

  1547. those around.

  1548. The same

  1549. impact as

  1550. the word of

  1551. God so

  1552. often does.

  1553. Some would

  1554. listen and

  1555. some would

  1556. put it

  1557. away.

  1558. But what

  1559. Jesus is

  1560. saying to

  1561. him here

  1562. is love

  1563. is at the

  1564. heart of

  1565. it.

  1566. Love here

  1567. as you

  1568. see in

  1569. English

  1570. the word

  1571. love is

  1572. just one

  1573. word.

  1574. But when

  1575. you look

  1576. at it

  1577. in the

  1578. text

  1579. itself

  1580. in the

  1581. original

  1582. language

  1583. it's

  1584. agape

  1585. love

  1586. that we

  1587. have

  1588. here

  1589. which

  1590. is

  1591. a

  1592. love

  1593. associated

  1594. with

  1595. God

  1596. himself.

  1597. And this

  1598. is a

  1599. love that

  1600. he has

  1601. shown to

  1602. us

  1603. that is

  1604. behind

  1605. it all

  1606. because

  1607. we can

  1608. only

  1609. love

  1610. when we

  1611. see

  1612. he

  1613. first

  1614. loved

  1615. us.

  1616. And so

  1617. he's

  1618. telling us

  1619. that this

  1620. love is

  1621. a costly

  1622. love.

  1623. Just as

  1624. his love

  1625. has been

  1626. a sacrifice

  1627. that was

  1628. made.

  1629. So

  1630. our love

  1631. is to

  1632. have that

  1633. sacrifice

  1634. as well.

  1635. The

  1636. advice

  1637. the

  1638. commands

  1639. that

  1640. interfere

  1641. with

  1642. our

  1643. plans

  1644. that

  1645. is

  1646. the

  1647. ones

  1648. that

  1649. we

  1650. are

  1651. to

  1652. listen

  1653. to.

  1654. And

  1655. because

  1656. they

  1657. disrupt

  1658. our

  1659. plans

  1660. or

  1661. interfere

  1662. our

  1663. plans

  1664. it

  1665. means

  1666. there

  1667. are

  1668. things

  1669. we

  1670. have

  1671. to

  1672. leave

  1673. behind.

  1674. Attitudes

  1675. we

  1676. have

  1677. to

  1678. change.

  1679. Things

  1680. we

  1681. have

  1682. to

  1683. put

  1684. away

  1685. and

  1686. listen

  1687. instead

  1688. to

  1689. the

  1690. word

  1691. of

  1692. God.

  1693. So

  1694. you

  1695. have

  1696. this

  1697. love

  1698. that

  1699. he

  1700. speaks

  1701. of

  1702. here

  1703. and

  1704. he

  1705. says

  1706. there

  1707. is

  1708. no

  1709. other

  1710. command

  1711. greater

  1712. than

  1713. these

  1714. love

  1715. the

  1716. Lord

  1717. your

  1718. God

  1719. with

  1720. all

  1721. your

  1722. heart

  1723. love

  1724. your

  1725. neighbor

  1726. as

  1727. yourself.

  1728. God

  1729. So

  1730. as

  1731. you

  1732. hear

  1733. this

  1734. question

  1735. it

  1736. would

  1737. ask

  1738. of

  1739. them

  1740. it

  1741. asks

  1742. of

  1743. us

  1744. do

  1745. I

  1746. love

  1747. the

  1748. Lord

  1749. with

  1750. all

  1751. my

  1752. heart

  1753. do

  1754. I

  1755. love

  1756. my

  1757. neighbor

  1758. as

  1759. myself

  1760. Jesus

  1761. is

  1762. here

  1763. stripping

  1764. away

  1765. every

  1766. layer

  1767. as he

  1768. is

  1769. getting

  1770. to

  1771. their

  1772. heart

  1773. stripping

  1774. away

  1775. all

  1776. the

  1777. laws

  1778. that

  1779. they

  1780. have

  1781. tried

  1782. to

  1783. keep

  1784. all

  1785. the

  1786. things

  1787. that

  1788. they

  1789. have

  1790. tried

  1791. to

  1792. do

  1793. themselves

  1794. and

  1795. he

  1796. is

  1797. getting

  1798. to

  1799. the

  1800. core

  1801. he

  1802. is

  1803. getting

  1804. to

  1805. the

  1806. center

  1807. of

  1808. it

  1809. all

  1810. and

  1811. saying

  1812. do

  1813. you

  1814. love

  1815. the

  1816. Lord

  1817. do

  1818. you

  1819. think

  1820. your

  1821. heart

  1822. is

  1823. right

  1824. today

  1825. with

  1826. God

  1827. or

  1828. have

  1829. the

  1830. years

  1831. sort

  1832. of

  1833. put

  1834. layers

  1835. on

  1836. top

  1837. of

  1838. your

  1839. heart

  1840. where

  1841. you

  1842. think

  1843. but

  1844. I'm

  1845. a

  1846. good

  1847. person

  1848. I'm

  1849. doing

  1850. well

  1851. !

  1852. things

  1853. are

  1854. going

  1855. !

  1856. well

  1857. the

  1858. Lord

  1859. kind

  1860. of

  1861. just

  1862. strips

  1863. all

  1864. these

  1865. layers

  1866. back

  1867. think

  1868. of

  1869. it

  1870. in

  1871. this

  1872. way

  1873. you've

  1874. got

  1875. a

  1876. wooden

  1877. bench

  1878. in

  1879. the

  1880. garden

  1881. it's

  1882. been

  1883. there

  1884. maybe

  1885. 20

  1886. years

  1887. and

  1888. every

  1889. year

  1890. you've

  1891. painted

  1892. it

  1893. with

  1894. a

  1895. gloss

  1896. paint

  1897. and

  1898. just

  1899. each

  1900. year

  1901. put

  1902. a

  1903. new

  1904. coat

  1905. on

  1906. top

  1907. and

  1908. you

  1909. think

  1910. to

  1911. yourself

  1912. this

  1913. bench

  1914. is

  1915. fine

  1916. this

  1917. bench

  1918. is

  1919. good

  1920. it's

  1921. lasted

  1922. for

  1923. years

  1924. but

  1925. you're

  1926. getting

  1927. to

  1928. the

  1929. stage

  1930. now

  1931. you're

  1932. thinking

  1933. well

  1934. it's

  1935. so

  1936. many

  1937. coats

  1938. of

  1939. paint

  1940. now

  1941. I

  1942. better

  1943. strip

  1944. it

  1945. right

  1946. back

  1947. to

  1948. the

  1949. wood

  1950. and

  1951. just

  1952. start

  1953. with

  1954. a

  1955. fresh

  1956. coat

  1957. again

  1958. but

  1959. to

  1960. your

  1961. horror

  1962. when

  1963. you

  1964. strip

  1965. back

  1966. all

  1967. the

  1968. layers

  1969. of

  1970. paint

  1971. you

  1972. find

  1973. the

  1974. wood

  1975. underneath

  1976. is

  1977. starting

  1978. to

  1979. rot

  1980. all

  1981. that's

  1982. been

  1983. holding

  1984. it

  1985. together

  1986. has

  1987. been

  1988. the

  1989. paint

  1990. all

  1991. these

  1992. layers

  1993. of

  1994. paint

  1995. they've

  1996. hidden

  1997. what's

  1998. at

  1999. the

  2000. core

  2001. of

  2002. it

  2003. and

  2004. so

  2005. you

  2006. need

  2007. to

  2008. take

  2009. action

  2010. well

  2011. in

  2012. many

  2013. ways

  2014. that's

  2015. what

  2016. the

  2017. word

  2018. of

  2019. God

  2020. does

  2021. with

  2022. our

  2023. hearts

  2024. as

  2025. well

  2026. you

  2027. think

  2028. I've

  2029. been

  2030. going

  2031. to

  2032. church

  2033. I've

  2034. been

  2035. saying

  2036. my

  2037. prayer

  2038. I've

  2039. been

  2040. reading

  2041. God's

  2042. word

  2043. all

  2044. these

  2045. layers

  2046. are

  2047. building

  2048. up

  2049. in

  2050. your

  2051. heart

  2052. and

  2053. you

  2054. think

  2055. everything's

  2056. fine

  2057. but

  2058. behind

  2059. all

  2060. that

  2061. when

  2062. you

  2063. strip

  2064. back

  2065. is

  2066. the

  2067. core

  2068. and

  2069. the

  2070. core

  2071. is

  2072. the

  2073. heart

  2074. with

  2075. all

  2076. your

  2077. soul

  2078. with

  2079. all

  2080. your

  2081. mind

  2082. with

  2083. all

  2084. your

  2085. strength

  2086. and

  2087. love

  2088. your

  2089. neighbor

  2090. as

  2091. yourself

  2092. as

  2093. all

  2094. the

  2095. strips

  2096. are

  2097. taken

  2098. away

  2099. it

  2100. asks

  2101. do

  2102. we

  2103. do

  2104. we

  2105. love

  2106. the

  2107. Lord

  2108. in

  2109. that

  2110. way

  2111. because

  2112. that's

  2113. what

  2114. is

  2115. key

  2116. here

  2117. the

  2118. question

  2119. answered

  2120. takes

  2121. away

  2122. from

  2123. all

  2124. the

  2125. burdens

  2126. of

  2127. the

  2128. law

  2129. that

  2130. they

  2131. were

  2132. under

  2133. and

  2134. just

  2135. shows

  2136. them

  2137. the

  2138. wonder

  2139. of

  2140. the

  2141. grace

  2142. of

  2143. God

  2144. that

  2145. is

  2146. love

  2147. to

  2148. us

  2149. that

  2150. demands

  2151. that

  2152. we

  2153. love

  2154. him

  2155. with

  2156. all

  2157. our

  2158. heart

  2159. well

  2160. the

  2161. final

  2162. thing

  2163. we

  2164. see

  2165. here

  2166. is

  2167. the

  2168. question

  2169. applied

  2170. Jesus

  2171. says

  2172. there

  2173. is

  2174. no

  2175. other

  2176. commandment

  2177. greater

  2178. than

  2179. these

  2180. and

  2181. then

  2182. verse

  2183. 32

  2184. it

  2185. says

  2186. the

  2187. scribe

  2188. said

  2189. to

  2190. him

  2191. you

  2192. are

  2193. right

  2194. teacher

  2195. you

  2196. have

  2197. truly

  2198. said

  2199. that

  2200. he

  2201. is

  2202. one

  2203. and

  2204. there

  2205. is

  2206. no

  2207. other

  2208. besides

  2209. him

  2210. and

  2211. to

  2212. love

  2213. him

  2214. with

  2215. all

  2216. the

  2217. heart

  2218. with

  2219. all

  2220. the

  2221. understanding

  2222. with

  2223. all

  2224. the

  2225. strength

  2226. and

  2227. to

  2228. love

  2229. one's

  2230. neighbor

  2231. as

  2232. oneself

  2233. is

  2234. much

  2235. more

  2236. than

  2237. all

  2238. whole

  2239. burnt

  2240. offerings

  2241. and

  2242. sacrifices

  2243. you see

  2244. here

  2245. the

  2246. man

  2247. is

  2248. hearing

  2249. this

  2250. and

  2251. he's

  2252. beginning

  2253. to

  2254. recognize

  2255. he says

  2256. you're

  2257. right

  2258. this

  2259. moment

  2260. of

  2261. dawning

  2262. you're

  2263. right

  2264. the

  2265. word of

  2266. God

  2267. is

  2268. right

  2269. you have

  2270. truly

  2271. said

  2272. he says

  2273. there

  2274. you have

  2275. said

  2276. well

  2277. you have

  2278. given

  2279. almost the

  2280. word is

  2281. beautiful

  2282. you've

  2283. given such

  2284. a beautiful

  2285. answer

  2286. that is

  2287. one

  2288. God

  2289. and to

  2290. love him

  2291. perfectly

  2292. and to

  2293. love others

  2294. perfectly

  2295. is more

  2296. important than

  2297. all the

  2298. laws we've

  2299. been under

  2300. this man

  2301. had come

  2302. to understand

  2303. truth

  2304. the truth

  2305. of God's

  2306. word

  2307. the truth

  2308. of who

  2309. God

  2310. is

  2311. did he

  2312. believe

  2313. well

  2314. Jesus

  2315. says

  2316. to him

  2317. here

  2318. you are

  2319. not

  2320. far

  2321. from

  2322. the

  2323. kingdom

  2324. of

  2325. God

  2326. Jesus

  2327. is

  2328. seeing

  2329. in

  2330. that

  2331. there's

  2332. something

  2333. working

  2334. here

  2335. but

  2336. it

  2337. says

  2338. you

  2339. are

  2340. not

  2341. far

  2342. from

  2343. the

  2344. kingdom

  2345. of

  2346. God

  2347. he's

  2348. saying

  2349. you

  2350. are

  2351. close

  2352. but

  2353. you're

  2354. not

  2355. quite

  2356. there

  2357. is

  2358. that

  2359. you

  2360. today

  2361. where

  2362. the

  2363. Lord

  2364. is

  2365. speaking

  2366. to

  2367. you

  2368. in

  2369. this

  2370. way

  2371. he's

  2372. saying

  2373. you're

  2374. not

  2375. far

  2376. from

  2377. the

  2378. kingdom

  2379. of

  2380. God

  2381. what's

  2382. missing

  2383. maybe

  2384. you

  2385. think

  2386. there's

  2387. nothing

  2388. really

  2389. missing

  2390. maybe

  2391. you

  2392. think

  2393. I'm

  2394. a

  2395. good

  2396. person

  2397. I'm

  2398. beginning

  2399. to

  2400. see

  2401. that

  2402. this

  2403. is

  2404. truth

  2405. but

  2406. Jesus

  2407. says

  2408. here

  2409. there's

  2410. something

  2411. still

  2412. missing

  2413. with

  2414. this

  2415. man

  2416. you're

  2417. not

  2418. far

  2419. from

  2420. the

  2421. kingdom

  2422. of

  2423. God

  2424. it's

  2425. a

  2426. reminder

  2427. to

  2428. us

  2429. that

  2430. it's

  2431. possible

  2432. to

  2433. be

  2434. a

  2435. good

  2436. person

  2437. to

  2438. have

  2439. a

  2440. good

  2441. religious

  2442. upbringing

  2443. and

  2444. still

  2445. be

  2446. lost

  2447. it's

  2448. possible

  2449. to

  2450. know

  2451. the

  2452. truth

  2453. and

  2454. still

  2455. be

  2456. lost

  2457. it's

  2458. possible

  2459. to

  2460. hear

  2461. the

  2462. gospel

  2463. preached

  2464. all

  2465. your

  2466. life

  2467. and

  2468. still

  2469. be

  2470. lost

  2471. somebody

  2472. else

  2473. it's

  2474. possible

  2475. to

  2476. be

  2477. within

  2478. an

  2479. inch

  2480. of

  2481. heaven

  2482. and

  2483. still

  2484. go

  2485. to

  2486. hell

  2487. close

  2488. is

  2489. not

  2490. enough

  2491. not

  2492. far

  2493. from

  2494. the

  2495. kingdom

  2496. of

  2497. God

  2498. is

  2499. not

  2500. enough

  2501. is

  2502. this

  2503. advice

  2504. that we

  2505. choose

  2506. or not

  2507. well

  2508. Jesus

  2509. has

  2510. reminded

  2511. him

  2512. this

  2513. is a

  2514. command

  2515. you're

  2516. not

  2517. far

  2518. from

  2519. the

  2520. kingdom

  2521. of

  2522. God

  2523. but

  2524. he's

  2525. saying

  2526. now

  2527. almost

  2528. go

  2529. and

  2530. do

  2531. these

  2532. things

  2533. go

  2534. and

  2535. live

  2536. in

  2537. this

  2538. way

  2539. love

  2540. the

  2541. Lord

  2542. your

  2543. God

  2544. with

  2545. all

  2546. your

  2547. heart

  2548. with

  2549. all

  2550. your

  2551. soul

  2552. with

  2553. all

  2554. your

  2555. mind

  2556. and

  2557. with

  2558. all

  2559. your

  2560. strength

  2561. and

  2562. love

  2563. your

  2564. neighbor

  2565. as

  2566. yourself

  2567. and

  2568. they

  2569. you

  2570. will

  2571. fulfill

  2572. the

  2573. commands

  2574. of

  2575. God

  2576. believe

  2577. in

  2578. him

  2579. what's

  2580. the best

  2581. advice

  2582. the

  2583. scribe

  2584. was

  2585. given

  2586. well

  2587. surely

  2588. it was

  2589. this

  2590. command

  2591. to

  2592. do

  2593. these

  2594. things

  2595. and

  2596. what's

  2597. the

  2598. best

  2599. advice

  2600. for

  2601. you

  2602. today

  2603. it's

  2604. to

  2605. see

  2606. this

  2607. is

  2608. not

  2609. just

  2610. advice

  2611. this

  2612. is

  2613. a

  2614. command

  2615. do

  2616. this

  2617. and

  2618. live

  2619. that's

  2620. what

  2621. the

  2622. word

  2623. of

  2624. God

  2625. says

  2626. do

  2627. this

  2628. and

  2629. live

  2630. believe

  2631. in

  2632. him

  2633. this

  2634. scribe

  2635. had

  2636. to

  2637. deal

  2638. with

  2639. this

  2640. question

  2641. here

  2642. and

  2643. then

  2644. and

  2645. today

  2646. you

  2647. have

  2648. to

  2649. deal

  2650. with

  2651. this

  2652. question

  2653. too

  2654. do

  2655. you

  2656. love

  2657. the

  2658. Lord

  2659. your

  2660. God

  2661. with

  2662. all

  2663. your

  2664. heart

  2665. do

  2666. you

  2667. love

  2668. your

  2669. neighbor

  2670. as

  2671. yourself

  2672. because

  2673. it's

  2674. dangerous

  2675. to

  2676. delay

  2677. and

  2678. put

  2679. this

  2680. away

  2681. Jesus

  2682. came

  2683. to

  2684. deal

  2685. with

  2686. sin

  2687. that's

  2688. what we

  2689. come

  2690. to

  2691. see

  2692. as

  2693. you

  2694. look

  2695. at

  2696. the

  2697. gospel

  2698. and

  2699. all

  2700. these

  2701. commands

  2702. that

  2703. he

  2704. is

  2705. giving

  2706. it

  2707. was

  2708. leading

  2709. up

  2710. to

  2711. the

  2712. cross

  2713. and

  2714. giving

  2715. his

  2716. life

  2717. for

  2718. his

  2719. people

  2720. that

  2721. they

  2722. might

  2723. live

  2724. so

  2725. we

  2726. need

  2727. to

  2728. listen

  2729. the

  2730. question

  2731. is

  2732. will

  2733. you

  2734. will

  2735. you

  2736. listen

  2737. to

  2738. this

  2739. command

  2740. today

  2741. love

  2742. the

  2743. Lord

  2744. your

  2745. God

  2746. with

  2747. all

  2748. your

  2749. heart

  2750. and

  2751. love

  2752. your

  2753. neighbor

  2754. as

  2755. yourself

  2756. let

  2757. us

  2758. hear

  2759. the

  2760. word

  2761. of

  2762. God

  2763. and

  2764. do

  2765. let

  2766. us

  2767. pray

  2768. our

  2769. father

  2770. in

  2771. heaven

  2772. we

  2773. do

  2774. thank

  2775. you

  2776. for

  2777. the

  2778. commands

  2779. that

  2780. your

  2781. word

  2782. gives

  2783. to

  2784. us

  2785. and

  2786. the

  2787. things

  2788. that

  2789. we

  2790. so

  2791. often

  2792. struggle

  2793. with

  2794. ourselves

  2795. we

  2796. know

  2797. Lord

  2798. the

  2799. frailties

  2800. of our

  2801. hearts

  2802. and

  2803. the

  2804. more

  2805. you

  2806. reveal

  2807. them

  2808. to

  2809. us

  2810. Lord

  2811. the

  2812. more

  2813. we

  2814. see

  2815. that

  2816. there

  2817. is

  2818. nothing

  2819. good

  2820. in

  2821. us

  2822. but

  2823. we

  2824. thank

  2825. you

  2826. Lord

  2827. for

  2828. your

  2829. grace

  2830. that

  2831. is

  2832. able

  2833. to

  2834. save

  2835. and

  2836. the

  2837. way

  2838. that

  2839. you

  2840. are

  2841. able

  2842. to

  2843. take

  2844. our

  2845. hearts

  2846. and

  2847. transform

  2848. them

  2849. from

  2850. the

  2851. hard

  2852. hearts

  2853. that

  2854. we

  2855. so

  2856. often

  2857. see

  2858. to

  2859. the

  2860. hearts

  2861. that

  2862. burn

  2863. within

  2864. us

  2865. with

  2866. a

  2867. love

  2868. for

  2869. you

  2870. and

  2871. so

  2872. we

  2873. pray

  2874. !

  2875. we'll

  2876. conclude

  2877. by singing

  2878. to God's

  2879. praise

  2880. in

  2881. Psalm

  2882. 52

  2883. to sing

  2884. Psalm's

  2885. version

  2886. Psalm

  2887. 52

  2888. page

  2889. 69

  2890. of the

  2891. psalm

  2892. books

  2893. going

  2894. to sing

  2895. verses

  2896. 8

  2897. and

  2898. 9

  2899. and

  2900. the

  2901. tune

  2902. his

  2903. brother

  2904. James

  2905. is

  2906. heir

  2907. Psalm

  2908. 52

  2909. at

  2910. verse

  2911. 8

  2912. but

  2913. I

  2914. am

  2915. like

  2916. an

  2917. olive

  2918. plant

  2919. in

  2920. God's

  2921. house

  2922. growing

  2923. free

  2924. I

  2925. trust

  2926. in

  2927. God's

  2928. unfailing

  2929. love

  2930. to

  2931. all

  2932. eternity

  2933. we'll

  2934. sing

  2935. these

  2936. two

  2937. verses

  2938. to

  2939. God's

  2940. praise

  2941. but

  2942. I

  2943. am

  2944. like

  2945. an

  2946. olive

  2947. plant

  2948. in

  2949. God's

  2950. growing

  2951. free

  2952. I

  2953. trust

  2954. in

  2955. God's

  2956. unfailing

  2957. love

  2958. to

  2959. all

  2960. eternity

  2961. I

  2962. trust

  2963. in

  2964. God's

  2965. unfailing

  2966. love

  2967. to

  2968. all

  2969. eternity

  2970. I'll

  2971. praise

  2972. you

  2973. ever

  2974. for

  2975. your

  2976. deeds

  2977. my

  2978. hope

  2979. is

  2980. in

  2981. your

  2982. name

  2983. and

  2984. in

  2985. the

  2986. presence

  2987. of

  2988. your

  2989. saints

  2990. I

  2991. will

  2992. extol

  2993. your

  2994. faith

  2995. and

  2996. in

  2997. the

  3002. I

  3003. will

  3004. extol

  3005. your

  3007. after

  3008. the

  3009. benediction

  3010. I'll

  3011. go to

  3012. the

  3013. main
