  2. Blessed are they that undefiled and straight are in the way,

  3. who in the Lord's most holy law do walk and do not stray.

  4. Blessed are they who to observe his statutes are inclined,

  5. and who to seek the living God with their whole heart and mind.

  6. Down to the end of the verse 6, Psalm 119, from the beginning of the psalm.

  7. Blessed are they that undefiled.

  8. Blessed are they that undefiled,

  9. but straight are in the way,

  10. who in the arms was holy law,

  11. do walk and do not stray.

  12. Blessed are they who to observe his statutes are inclined,

  13. and who to observe his statutes are inclined,

  14. but who to see the living God with their whole heart and mind.

  15. The endless ways to walk the way,

  16. to know the integrity,

  17. of us, by the Lord's most holy law,

  18. by the peace and fear for thee.

  19. of my stout,

  20. but my stout,

  21. just to your stand,

  22. the wounds,

  23. my wings,

  24. thy legs,

  25. and the light,

  26. then shall I know each day,

  27. when I

  28. thy peace and song be set.

  34. the peace o lord

  35. that we

  36. are partakers of

  37. this night here

  38. that is denied

  39. to so many across our world

  40. tonight

  41. because

  42. of the

  43. dis-peace

  44. that is experienced

  45. in the troubled

  46. and tormented parts of our world

  47. tonight

  48. and we

  49. oh lord our god bring these

  50. places before thee

  51. for there

  52. there is a voice that

  53. cries to thee from the very depths

  54. of human emotion

  55. and experience

  56. as we

  57. see

  58. the upheavals of

  59. natural disaster

  60. and conflict

  61. and we pray oh lord our god

  62. that they would hear the voice

  63. that cries out of the depths

  64. of experience in these places

  65. and that we would recognise

  66. the blessing that we have

  67. that is the peace

  68. that we enjoy here

  69. and how each year

  70. we remember those

  71. who paid the ultimate price

  72. many who left these shores

  73. never to return

  74. in the giving the ultimate sacrifice

  75. in the great world conflicts

  76. with which

  77. that peace

  78. was purchased

  79. and we give thanks unto thee

  80. oh lord for the greater peace

  81. that was purchased

  82. by one

  83. who in the great

  84. conflicts of

  85. Gethsemane and

  86. Gabbatha

  87. and Golgotha

  88. purchased the peace

  89. that passes

  90. our understanding

  91. through the finished work

  92. which he accomplished

  93. as he laid down

  94. his life

  95. for those

  96. whom he loved

  97. and we bless thee

  98. for that peace

  99. that peace of God

  100. and that peace

  101. with God

  102. and we bless thee

  103. sovereign father

  104. that

  105. we can never lose

  106. that peace of God

  107. though we have to recognise and acknowledge that through sin

  108. we bring a breach into the peace with God

  109. Sovereign Father we gather tonight to worship

  110. and we pray for the enabling to do so

  111. and for us individually and collectively to be granted

  112. the spirit of worship

  113. that our minds might be gathered and focused as one

  114. in this place

  115. and to hear what we shall read from thy word

  116. and what they were saying to us

  117. and that they would separate us from everything

  118. that would separate us from thyself

  119. For oh Lord

  120. so often when we come into the courts of thy house

  121. we experience conflict

  122. and the many affections that contend

  123. for the affection that we desire to be singular

  124. and set on the things that are above where Christ is

  125. Gracious God in thy presence tonight

  126. we would ask thee to

  127. draw near to each and every spirit that

  128. in thy presence this night

  129. is going through a time of testing and turmoil

  130. and trial

  131. and may be experiencing that loneliness that can be experienced

  132. when the testing and the trials of a nature that they feel

  133. unable to share with any

  134. and may even reduce them to being unable to articulate words

  135. that they can present before thee in prayer

  136. but we bless thee that thy word reminds us

  137. of a prayer that ascends into thy nearer presence

  138. that does not consist of words

  139. but rather of sighs and groans which cannot be uttered

  140. that remarkable language that is heard

  141. that is heard recognised and answered by thee

  142. and we pray thy nearness to any oh Lord

  143. with us here or joining us

  144. on the live stream

  145. that thou oh Lord would minister to

  146. all who may be passing through such times

  147. the strength that thou dost hold in reserve

  148. for thou dost appoint days in our earthly pilgrimage

  149. that we would never choose

  150. but we bless thee

  151. that thy word reminds us of the great promise

  152. that as thy day so thy strength shall be

  153. and that there is a strength that is held in reserve

  154. and that we may never experience

  155. until we are brought into the very depths

  156. from which we cry

  157. and receive that strength

  158. Sovereign Father we pray tonight

  159. for this congregation

  160. as in its spiritual history

  161. it finds itself at a time of vacancy

  162. and thou knowest oh Lord

  163. the concern we have for it

  164. as the vital place

  165. it plays in its strategic position

  166. of walk and witness

  167. within the confines of our presbytery

  168. and we commit it

  169. and commend it to thee

  170. remembering tonight

  171. the one whom

  172. is appointed over them

  173. as their inter-moderator

  174. Reverend Colin MacLeod

  175. with all the burdens

  176. he has of his own congregation

  177. and back

  178. and now the additional burdens

  179. of this congregation

  180. and we remember also thy servant

  181. in the assistantship of the congregation

  182. as he also experiences

  183. the burden of a vacant congregation

  184. as he performs the duties of interim moderator

  185. in the congregation of Shawbust

  186. and we remember the other vacant congregations

  187. and pray for the interim moderators

  188. for Reverend Ian Thompson

  189. as he takes on the burden

  190. of the congregation of South Hewist

  191. for Reverend Paul Murray

  192. as he takes on the burden

  193. of the congregation of Park

  194. for the Reverend Ewan Matheson

  195. as he takes on the burden

  196. of Barvis

  197. and Reverend Thomas Davis

  198. as he takes on the additional burden

  199. of Calanish

  200. These are days

  201. O Lord of concern

  202. and we pray

  203. that the concern

  204. would be laid upon us

  205. as a real burden

  206. so that we would

  207. be found

  208. as a praying people

  209. petitioning thee

  210. that it would please thee

  211. O Lord

  212. to prepare

  213. and provide

  214. and raise up

  215. those

  216. who called

  217. and equipped

  218. by thee

  219. would be enabled

  220. to

  221. fill these vacancies

  222. that we might

  223. see days

  224. again

  225. of gospel

  226. blessing

  227. and increase

  228. across the pulpits

  229. and parishes

  230. of our beloved island

  231. O Lord

  232. our God

  233. we ask

  234. that they would

  235. remember us

  236. and now

  237. sovereign father

  238. as we come

  239. to

  240. read thy truth

  241. we pray

  242. that they would

  243. be with us

  244. and clear our minds

  245. of every distraction

  246. that thy word

  247. might be lodged

  248. in our hearts

  249. in a way

  250. that

  251. long after

  252. we leave

  253. this place

  254. the power

  255. of thy spirit

  256. would open

  257. and apply

  258. the teaching

  259. of thy truth

  260. to our lives

  261. that we might

  262. walk in it

  263. that we might

  264. know its blessing

  265. and fullness

  266. we pray

  267. to

  268. remember

  269. all who

  270. have been

  271. bereaved

  272. in our town

  273. and across

  274. our island

  275. in recent days

  276. when the voice

  277. of death

  278. has spoken

  279. time and again

  280. almost day

  281. by day

  282. and we ask

  283. O Lord

  284. that

  285. thou would

  286. draw near

  287. to all

  288. tonight

  289. who experience

  290. the sorrow

  291. and sadness

  292. of separation

  293. and that

  294. into the brokenness

  295. of bereavement

  296. thou would

  297. minister

  298. the care

  299. and compassion

  300. and comfort

  301. that cometh

  302. from thyself

  303. in the way

  304. that thou are

  305. alone not able

  306. to access

  307. the inner spirit

  308. and lay

  309. these blessings

  310. there

  311. Father

  312. continue with us

  313. watch over us

  314. take away

  315. our every sin

  316. and love us

  317. freely

  318. for Christ's sake

  319. Amen

  320. we turn

  321. to read

  322. in God's word

  323. in the Old Testament

  324. in the book

  325. of Psalms

  326. and Psalm

  327. 86

  328. the Old Testament

  329. the book

  330. of Psalms

  331. Psalm 86

  332. and we'll read

  333. the whole psalm

  334. incline your ear

  335. O Lord

  336. and answer me

  337. for I am poor

  338. and needy

  339. preserve my life

  340. for I am godly

  341. save your servant

  342. who trusts in you

  343. you are

  344. my God

  345. be gracious

  346. to me

  347. O Lord

  348. for to you

  349. do I cry

  350. all the day

  351. gladden the soul

  352. of your servant

  353. for to you

  354. O Lord

  355. do I lift up

  356. my soul

  357. for you

  358. O Lord

  359. are good

  360. and forgiving

  361. abounding

  362. in steadfast love

  363. to all

  364. who call upon you

  365. give ear

  366. O Lord

  367. to my prayer

  368. listen

  369. to my plea

  370. for grace

  371. in the day

  372. of my trouble

  373. I call upon you

  374. for you

  375. answer me

  376. there is none

  377. like you

  378. among the gods

  379. O Lord

  380. nor are there

  381. any works

  382. like yours

  383. all the nations

  384. who you have

  385. made

  386. shall come

  387. and worship

  388. before you

  389. O Lord

  390. and shall glorify

  391. your name

  392. for you are

  393. great

  394. and do wondrous

  395. things

  396. you alone

  397. are God

  398. teach me

  399. your way

  400. O Lord

  401. that I may

  402. walk

  403. in your truth

  404. unite my

  405. heart

  406. to fear

  407. your name

  408. I give

  409. thanks to you

  410. O Lord

  411. my God

  412. with my whole

  413. heart

  414. and I will

  415. glorify

  416. your name

  417. forever

  418. for great

  419. is your

  420. steadfast

  421. love

  422. towards me

  423. you have

  424. delivered my

  425. soul

  426. from the

  427. depths

  428. of Sheol

  429. O God

  430. insolent men

  431. have risen

  432. up against me

  433. a band

  434. of ruthless

  435. men

  436. seeks my

  437. life

  438. and they

  439. do not

  440. set you

  441. before them

  442. but you

  443. O Lord

  444. are a God

  445. merciful

  446. and gracious

  447. slow to

  448. anger

  449. and abounding

  450. in steadfast

  451. love

  452. and faithfulness

  453. turn to

  454. me

  455. and be

  456. gracious

  457. to me

  458. give your

  459. strength

  460. to your

  461. servant

  462. and save

  463. the son

  464. of your

  465. maidservant

  466. show me

  467. a sign

  468. of your

  469. favour

  470. that those

  471. who hate

  472. me

  473. may see

  474. and be

  475. put to

  476. shame

  477. because you

  478. Lord

  479. have helped

  480. me

  481. and comforted

  482. me

  483. and so on

  484. and may the

  485. Lord bless

  486. to us

  487. this passage

  488. of scripture

  489. and we'll

  490. sing now

  491. to God's

  674. Can we turn then this evening for a time to the passage of Scripture that we read, the Old Testament, Psalm 86?

  675. Psalm 86, I'm reading again the words of verse 11.

  676. Where we read these words,

  677. Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth. Unite my heart to fear your name.

  678. Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth. Unite my heart to fear your name.

  679. When the great reformer John Calvin wrote his commentary on the Bible and he came to the book of Psalms,

  680. He recognised the unique nature of the book.

  681. And of it he said this.

  682. It is, he said, an anatomy of the soul.

  683. Because there is not an emotion which anyone can be conscious of that is not here represented as in a mirror.

  684. The Holy Spirit has here drawn all the griefs, sorrows, fears, doubts, hopes, cares, perplexities with which the minds of men are agitated.

  685. Quite a profound statement.

  686. And yet one I'm sure that we can all agree that we have experienced in a measure as we ourselves see the preciousness of the Psalms

  687. and how they relate and how they relate and how they are a source of comfort to us in experiences that we pass through.

  688. And for that reason, Calvin gave it that remarkable title, An Anatomy of the Soul.

  689. There are bookshops that have vast, vast amounts of titles on the anatomy of the body.

  690. But here we have the only book for their greatest need, that is the anatomy of the soul.

  691. And so looking at it with that as our backdrop, we come to this great psalm that we have here.

  692. And at the very outset you may notice something if the designation is given in your Bible,

  693. that not only is it a psalm, but it is also a prayer.

  694. A prayer of David.

  695. And it is a prayer where the psalmist is presenting petitions of poverty and praise.

  696. As we look at the psalm, we discern that, the petitions of poverty and praise.

  697. And that comes out very strongly in the boldness with which the psalm begins.

  698. The boldness of the opening petition.

  699. Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me.

  700. In many other places the psalms open with great declarations of reverence and respect.

  701. But here, because of the poverty that the psalmist is experiencing,

  702. it's as if he rushes into the presence of God and just pours himself out.

  703. In the metrical psalm, it perhaps comes across even more strongly where it says,

  704. bow down thine ear.

  705. It's such a bold petition for a petitioner to come before the living God and make that request.

  706. Because the Bible teaches us that before God, we are the clay.

  707. And he is the potter.

  708. And we have that in the Old Testament prophecies,

  709. where, for instance, in Isaiah, in chapter 64 and verse 8, we read these words,

  710. But now, O Lord, you are our father, we are the clay, and you are our potter.

  711. We are all the work of your hand.

  712. And in another place Isaiah says, does the clay say to whom who forms it, what are you making?

  713. And here we have this bold petition of the clay to the potter saying, bow down your ear to me.

  714. And most remarkably, elsewhere in the book of Psalms, we are told that the petition is answered.

  715. Words that we so often sing.

  716. Perhaps presenters here will understand what I say when it's one of the great weaknesses.

  717. I'm guilty of myself because being a presenter, you get so caught up with the concern about the tune and so on,

  718. that you can almost at times miss the very words you're presenting.

  719. And yet in Psalm 116, the psalmist tells us of what the effect of his petition being answered had upon him.

  720. Because he says, I love the Lord because my voice and prayers heeded here.

  721. And then he tells us the effect that that had on him.

  722. I, while I live, will call on him who bowed to me his ear.

  723. It's such a powerful image for us to reflect on God bowing his ear to hear a prayer from the very clay that we are.

  724. And yet before us here, that is exactly what we have again.

  725. The psalmist in his great need.

  726. And in verses 1 to 7, as he comes then to present his petitions of poverty and praise,

  727. from verses 1 to 7, he does that where time and again he highlights his conflict.

  728. Over and over again, the petitions are there.

  729. I am poor.

  730. I am needy.

  731. Be gracious to me.

  732. I cry to you all the day.

  733. Gladden the soul and so on and so on.

  734. His conflict.

  735. And then in verses 8 and 10, 8 to 10 rather, he presents to us as a backdrop to these, to his conflict,

  736. the confidence he has in the character of God.

  737. There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours.

  738. All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name.

  739. For you are great and do wondrous things.

  740. You alone are God.

  741. These are wonderful words to read.

  742. When we see the conflict and distress that the psalmist experiences, summed up for us in the very first verse where he says of himself,

  743. I am poor and needy.

  744. And into the poverty and into the need.

  745. We then come to the remarkable petition that he presents in verse 11, which is going to be the focus of our thoughts for our time this evening.

  746. Where he then presents a petition.

  747. And he says, teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth.

  748. Unite my heart to fear your name.

  749. And the three points that present themselves specifically there.

  750. Your way, your truth, and your name.

  751. And so in this petition, in this verse he begins with these words, teach me.

  752. Me.

  753. And there is so much depth even in that two words.

  754. That they would easily, easily accommodate a single sermon being preached on these two words because of the depth that they contain.

  755. First of all, he identifies his need.

  756. In the midst of the conflict and strife and the poverty that he's experiencing, he now comes to God.

  757. And having assessed his need, he presents that need to God.

  758. And he says, teach.

  759. Teach.

  760. And in these words, teach me.

  761. Teach.

  762. Teach.

  763. He wants to be taught.

  764. And it's himself that he wants to be taught.

  765. And he is the needy.

  766. Teach me.

  767. And he is the needy.

  768. Teach me.

  769. Teach me.

  770. Teach me.

  771. Teach me.

  772. And in these words, teach me, we have an evidence of the change that took place in the life of the psalmist when he was brought from death to life and from darkness to light.

  773. What we call regeneration.

  774. What we call regeneration.

  775. Regeneration.

  776. That mysterious work that is undertaken by God in the spirit of man.

  777. That act of creation that takes place as the desire that the psalmist expresses here was infused into him.

  778. That act of creation.

  779. Because regeneration, being born again, coming to faith is an act of creation.

  780. Because Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians chapter 5, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  781. And in light of that new creation, now the psalmist comes with a great mark of that creation, a great mark of regeneration, what we might call a great mark of grace, desire.

  782. And his desire is for grace.

  783. His desire is for grace.

  784. Many people want a mark of grace.

  785. Some of the Lord's people, from time to time in their earthly pilgrimage experience a lack of assurance, even although their conversion at one point may have been very, very powerful.

  786. Yet along the way in the earthly pilgrimage, they can be brought to low places.

  787. And in themselves, they look for a mark of grace.

  788. And I think this is one of the greatest marks of grace.

  789. The mark of desire.

  790. Because as Isaiah reminds us, there was a day when we had no desire.

  791. But regeneration infused desire.

  792. Desire for grace.

  793. And we see that here in the psalmist.

  794. Verse 3, be gracious to me, O Lord.

  795. Verse 6, give ear, O Lord, to my prayer.

  796. Listen to my plea for grace.

  797. Because the recipient of grace becomes a grace-dependent child.

  798. And grace enrolls the child in the school of God.

  799. Where we become grace-dependent children.

  800. And the grace-dependent children.

  801. And the grace-dependent children.

  802. Exercise the desire they have to be in the means of grace.

  803. Where grace was received and where grace is communicated.

  804. Teach me, he cries.

  805. And then he asks what he wants to be taught.

  806. He says, teach me your way.

  807. Because he knows that there is only two ways.

  808. And for each and every one of us here tonight.

  809. It is either your way.

  810. Or we drop the Y.

  811. And it becomes our way.

  812. It's either his way or our way.

  813. Teach me, he says.

  814. Teach me, he says.

  815. Your way.

  816. And in saying that, he recognizes that it is God alone that is able to teach him.

  817. Some of you here may be teachers.

  818. Some of you may know the burden of teaching.

  819. But the request that has been made here to be taught.

  820. Is to be taught by the only one that can teach this lesson.

  821. Because those of you who are teachers are teaching the head.

  822. But the lesson that is being taught here needs to be taught and received in the heart.

  823. For God alone has access to the heart.

  824. For it is there that God infuses the capacity to learn.

  825. And the capacity to be taught the lesson.

  826. The capacity to learn.

  827. And the capacity to be taught the lesson.

  828. For those of you who are teachers, if there are any present.

  829. And all of us know that in the field of education, there are what we call the three R's.

  830. The three fundamental skills of education.

  831. Reading, writing and arithmetic.

  832. But in the lesson that we are taught in grace.

  833. I want to suggest that there are four R's.

  834. Because the first R is reading.

  835. And the second one is retaining what we read.

  836. And the third one is reflecting upon what we read.

  837. And all of these are of no benefit to us.

  838. Unless what we read and what we retain and what we reflect upon is that which regulates our lives.

  839. And one Bible expositor makes this observation with great solemnity.

  840. And he says this.

  841. We may listen to the best preacher who ever lived.

  842. But unless God shall apply the truth to our heart.

  843. We will not receive it.

  844. We need.

  845. We need.

  846. Here is a psalm where the psalmist is saying.

  847. I am poor and needy.

  848. We need the instruction and the illumination of the Holy Spirit.

  849. In the upper room discourse, Christ said to the disciples about the Holy Spirit.

  850. He shall teach you all things.

  851. In the school of God.

  852. We need the instruction and illumination of the Holy Spirit.

  853. But unless we have his teaching, we cannot.

  854. And we will not know the truth.

  855. Therefore, he says, never neglect the means of grace.

  856. And then he adds this with great solemnity.

  857. But at the same time, never get into the condition that some are in.

  858. who feel quite happy so long as they have been to a place of worship on the Lord's day.

  859. And who return home just as if they had done all their duty for the day.

  860. They are, he says, like men who go to the market.

  861. But buy nothing.

  862. Here in this school.

  863. There are lessons that we must learn.

  864. When the capacity to be taught.

  865. And the capacity to receive and retain the lesson is infused by the work of the Holy Spirit.

  866. And of that vast curriculum that there is in God's school.

  867. I want tonight to focus on one particular aspect of the curriculum.

  868. And that is the lessons that are taught concerning ourselves.

  869. I spoke earlier about the four R's, the arithmetic.

  870. In this school, there is spiritual arithmetic.

  871. And here, in the lesson that has been taught to us,

  872. we learn what one writer calls addition by subtraction.

  873. In a Christian context, he says, addition by subtraction signifies that spiritual growth

  874. and a closer relationship with God that can only be achieved.

  875. Not by adding more things to one's life.

  876. But by removing, by removing negative influences and practices.

  877. And what a day we find ourselves in.

  878. Of negative influences that can have such a profound influence upon us.

  879. But even in the psalmist's day, negative influences had an effect on him.

  880. And we'll come to that when he identifies the need for his heart to be united.

  881. Learning addition by subtraction is one of the most difficult lessons that we are taught about ourselves in this school.

  882. It's one thing to say, teach me your way.

  883. It's another thing as we receive the lessons, to put our yea and amen to the outworking of providence in our lives

  884. and say, not my way, Lord, but your way.

  885. Because your ways are not my ways.

  886. Let me illustrate this to you.

  887. By bringing before you one who has a recipient of grace recorded for us.

  888. The profound experience of being a recipient of grace.

  889. Grace that he heard.

  890. And today across the world.

  891. In many diets of worship.

  892. The words that he recorded will have been lifted up in praise.

  893. Where multitudes today will have sung.

  894. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound.

  895. That saved a wretch like me.

  896. I once was lost, but now I'm found.

  897. Was blind, but now I see.

  898. The effect of being a recipient of grace.

  899. And what it had for John Newton.

  900. And the depth of assurance that he received.

  901. And the depth of inward illumination enabling him to write these remarkable words.

  902. Amazing grace.

  903. And yet, as I said a minute ago.

  904. On the earthly pilgrimage.

  905. As we go on.

  906. In this school and we are taught.

  907. The lesson of addition by subtraction can be painful.

  908. It's almost hard to believe that a man like John Newton.

  909. Who wrote such beautiful words.

  910. Amazing grace.

  911. Could further on in his earthly pilgrimage write this.

  912. It is a point I long to know.

  913. Of that.

  914. Often it causes anxious thought.

  915. Do I love the Lord or no?

  916. Am I his?

  917. Or am I not?

  918. If I love, why am I thus?

  919. Why this dull and lifeless frame?

  920. Hardly sure can they be worse.

  921. Who have never known his name.

  922. Could my heart so hard remain?

  923. Prayer a task and burden prove.

  924. Every trifle give me pain.

  925. If I knew a saviour's love.

  926. When I turn my eyes within.

  927. All is dark and vain and wild.

  928. Filled with unbelief and sin.

  929. Can I deem myself a child?

  930. And so he goes on.

  931. Being taught of God.

  932. And I think if we had been contemporary with John Newton.

  933. And we had heard him utter these remarkable words.

  934. expressing an extreme lack of assurance.

  935. From having been on the high mountain of assurance.

  936. We would be desperate to ask the question.

  937. What happened?

  938. And remarkably John Newton recorded for us what happened.

  939. Because elsewhere he wrote of what happened.

  940. In the school of grace.

  941. He prayed.

  942. I asked the Lord that I might grow in faith and love and every grace.

  943. Might more of his salvation know and seek.

  944. More earnestly his face.

  945. It was he who taught me thus to pray.

  946. And he I trust has answered prayer.

  947. But it has been in such a way.

  948. As almost drove me.

  949. To despair.

  950. I'd hope that in some favoured hour at once.

  951. He'd answer my request.

  952. And by his love's constraining power.

  953. Subdue my sin.

  954. And give me rest.

  955. And listen to this.

  956. Instead of this.

  957. He made me feel.

  958. The hidden evils of my heart.

  959. And let the angry powers of hell assault my soul.

  960. In every part.

  961. Yea more with his own hand.

  962. He seemed intent to aggravate my woe.

  963. Crossed all the faired signs I schemed.

  964. Humbled my heart.

  965. And laid me low.

  966. The experience of addition by subtraction.

  967. And it wrought out of the very soul of Newton.

  968. A cry from the depths.

  969. And he said.

  970. Lord why is this?

  971. I trembling cried.

  972. Wilt thou pursue thy worm to death?

  973. And back came the answer.

  974. It is in this way the Lord replied.

  975. I answer prayer.

  976. For grace and faith.

  977. These inward trials I employ from self and pride.

  978. To set thee free.

  979. And break thy schemes of earthly joy.

  980. That thou mayest find.

  981. Thy all.

  982. In me.

  983. In me.

  984. Truly.

  985. Remarkable words.

  986. From a remarkable man.

  987. As he learned.

  988. In the school of grace.

  989. What he had to be taught.

  990. In the school of grace.

  991. What he had to be taught.

  992. Because each and every one of us.

  993. Must also be taught this lesson.

  994. Teach me thy way.

  995. That voy.

  996. That voy.

  997. That voy.

  998. That voy.

  999. That voy.

  1000. That voy.

  1001. That voy.

  1002. That voy.

  1003. That voy.

  1004. That voy.

  1005. That voy.

  1006. That voy.

  1007. That voy.

  1008. That voy.

  1009. thy way

  1010. our former minister

1011. the reverend roddy john campbell

  1012. would often

1013. address us on this and illustrate

1014. the work of the refiner

  1015. those who

  1016. refine precious metal

  1017. requiring

  1018. great great skill and

  1019. deft of hand

1020. where they would take the raw

1021. gold as it came out of the earth

1022. or silver whatever they were refining

1023. and place it into the crucible

  1024. where ferocious

  1025. heat would be applied

  1026. to melt

  1027. the metal

  1028. and in the

  1029. melting of the metal

  1030. as the

1031. heat was increased so the

  1032. impurities would be brought

  1033. to the surface

1034. and then the refiner would come with this

  1035. refining pan

  1036. and skim the surface

  1037. and take away

  1038. only the

  1039. impurities

  1040. but leave

  1041. the precious metal

  1042. and in our lives

  1043. as we are taught

  1044. there are impurities

1045. that need to be removed

1046. in the school of grace

  1047. for every grace

  1048. dependent

  1049. child

  1050. we need to learn

  1051. what humility

  1052. is

  1053. that humility

  1054. that is

  1055. where we learn

  1056. the plague

  1057. of our heart

  1058. and having its

  1059. abominable

  1060. and innumerable

  1061. abominations

  1062. abominations

  1063. exposed

  1064. to our view

  1065. and to our understanding

1066. we need to be taught

  1067. and have the

  1068. impurities of our lives

  1069. come out

  1070. through repentance

  1071. where we learn

  1072. feeling the heavy burden

  1073. of our

  1074. infidelity

  1075. to be made conscious

  1076. of that

  1077. we need to learn

  1078. love

  1079. learned

  1080. by our personal

  1081. sense of the

  1082. undeserved goodness

  1083. of God

  1084. to us

  1085. the vilest

  1086. of the vile

1087. we need to be taught

  1088. what patience is

  1089. patience as the Puritans

  1090. would say

  1091. is only learned

  1092. in the furnace

  1093. of affliction

  1094. and the work

  1095. of the refiner

  1096. as he refined

  1097. the metal

  1098. and having

  1099. undertaken

  1100. the work of skimming

  1101. he would repeat

  1102. the whole process

  1103. as he discerned

  1104. the need

  1105. for the lessons

  1106. to be learned

  1107. and the impurities

  1108. to come out

  1109. and so the process

  1110. would be repeated

  1111. over and over

  1112. and over again

  1113. and the refiner

  1114. would know

  1115. when his work

  1116. was complete

  1117. when he would

  1118. look into the pot

  1119. and see nothing

  1120. but his own image

  1121. no impurities

  1122. and our earthly

  1123. pilgrimage

  1124. consists

  1125. of the removal

  1126. of the impurities

  1127. that are in us

  1128. as we learn

  1129. in the school

  1130. of God's grace

  1131. what it is

  1132. that we need

  1133. to be taught

  1134. and he goes on

  1135. and he says

  1136. teach me

  1137. your way

  1138. oh Lord

  1139. that I may

  1140. walk in

  1141. your truth

  1142. your truth

  1143. what we learned

  1144. as children

  1145. here

  1146. is the only

  1147. rule

  1148. to guide

  1149. us

  1150. and to direct

  1151. us

  1152. and how we

  1153. need to walk

  1154. in that

  1155. truth

  1156. the need

  1157. for us

  1158. to come back

  1159. and remind

  1160. ourselves

  1161. of the four

  1162. hours

  1163. the need

  1164. for us

  1165. to read

  1166. retain

  1167. receive

  1168. reflect

  1169. !

  1170. and live

  1171. lives

  1172. that are

  1173. regulated

  1174. by that

  1175. truth

  1176. and it's

  1177. the great

  1178. great charge

  1179. that Elijah

  1180. brought against

  1181. the children

  1182. of Israel

  1183. in the day

  1184. when on

  1185. Mount Carmel

  1186. he there

  1187. restored the

  1188. worship of

  1189. God

  1190. it having

  1191. been brought

  1192. to such

  1193. a low

  1194. almost as

  1195. in the

  1196. observing

  1197. of it

  1198. one would

  1199. easily

  1200. conclude

  1201. that it

  1202. could never

  1203. be restored

  1204. and revived

  1205. and refreshed

  1206. and yet

  1207. Elijah

  1208. there

  1209. challenges

  1210. the people

  1211. of God

  1212. and he

  1213. says to

  1214. them

  1215. how long

  1216. halt

  1217. ye

  1218. between

  1219. two

  1220. opinions

  1221. it comes

  1222. across

  1223. even stronger

  1224. in the

  1225. ESV

  1226. where it

  1227. says

  1228. how long

  1229. will you

  1230. go

  1231. halting

  1232. between

  1233. two

  1234. opinions

  1235. not

  1236. walking

  1237. but

  1238. halting

  1239. limping

  1240. how difficult

  1241. it is

  1242. to walk

  1243. when

  1244. you have

  1245. a limp

  1246. perhaps

  1247. through an

  1248. injury

  1249. you've

  1250. sustained

  1251. you know

  1252. what it

  1253. is

  1254. when

  1255. you're

  1256. trying

  1257. to

  1258. walk

  1259. and

  1260. the

  1261. difficulty

  1262. if

  1263. you've

  1264. got

  1265. a

  1266. distance

  1267. to

  1268. walk

  1269. because

  1270. of

  1271. a

  1272. limp

  1273. and

  1274. some

  1275. of you

  1276. here

  1277. may

  1278. recall

  1279. a great

  1280. sermon

  1281. that was

  1282. preached

  1283. here

  1284. by the

  1285. Reverend

  1286. Kenneth

  1287. Stewart

  1288. when he

  1289. in his

  1290. study

  1291. on the

  1292. book

  1293. and in

  1294. the life

  1295. of

  1296. Elijah

  1297. came

  1298. to this

  1299. passage

  1300. and the

  1301. challenge

  1302. that he

  1303. placed

  1304. before us

  1305. that

  1306. night

  1307. asking

  1308. where

  1309. we

  1310. were

  1311. whether

  1312. we're

  1313. halting

  1314. between

  1315. two

  1316. opinions

  1317. because

  1318. when we

  1319. are

  1320. he said

  1321. we have

  1322. one

  1323. foot in

  1324. the world

  1325. and one

  1326. foot in

  1327. the church

  1328. and the

  1329. world

  1330. doesn't

  1331. know

  1332. where

  1333. we

  1334. are

  1335. and the

  1336. church

  1337. doesn't

  1338. know

  1339. where

  1340. we

  1341. are

  1342. and

  1343. it's

  1344. the

  1345. necessity

  1346. for us

  1347. to

  1348. understand

  1349. what it

  1350. is that

  1351. the

  1352. psalmist

  1353. is

  1354. asking

  1355. here

  1356. I

  1357. need

  1358. to

  1359. walk

  1360. and I

  1361. need

  1362. to

  1363. walk

  1364. in

  1365. your

  1366. truth

  1367. and

  1368. in

  1369. the

  1370. psalm

  1371. that

  1372. we

  1373. sung

  1374. in

  1375. our

  1376. opening

  1377. praise

  1378. psalm

  1379. 119

  1380. the

  1381. psalmist

  1382. goes

  1383. on

  1384. with

  1385. that

  1386. wonderful

  1387. petition

  1388. where

  1389. he

  1390. speaks

  1391. of

  1392. the

  1393. word

  1394. as

  1395. a

  1396. lamp

  1397. to

  1398. his

  1399. feet

  1400. and

  1401. a

  1402. light

  1403. to

  1404. his

  1405. path

  1406. and

  1407. everything

  1408. that

  1409. is

  1410. contained

  1411. in

  1412. that

  1413. petition

  1414. be

  1415. strange

  1416. if

  1417. this

  1418. time

  1419. tomorrow

  1420. night

  1421. you

  1422. were

  1423. outside

  1424. the

  1425. church

  1426. and

  1427. you

  1428. saw

  1429. somebody

  1430. walking

  1431. up

  1432. kenneth

  1433. street

  1434. with

  1435. a

  1436. torch

  1437. why

  1438. do

  1439. you

  1440. need

  1441. a

  1442. torch

  1443. when

  1444. it's

  1445. daylight

  1446. the

  1447. psalmist

  1448. is

  1449. discerning

  1450. the

  1451. darkness

  1452. of the

  1453. day

  1454. in which

  1455. he

  1456. was

  1457. found

  1458. and

  1459. the

  1460. necessity

  1461. to

  1462. walk

  1463. to

  1464. walk

  1465. with

  1466. the

  1467. truth

  1468. as a

  1469. lamp

  1470. to his

  1471. feet

  1472. and a

  1473. light

  1474. to his

  1475. path

  1476. and

  1477. what

  1478. about

  1479. ourselves

  1480. in

  1481. the

  1482. darkness

  1483. of

  1484. the

  1485. day

  1486. that

  1487. we

  1488. are

  1489. found

  1490. do

  1491. we

  1492. not

  1493. need

  1494. that

  1495. lamp

  1496. to

  1497. her

  1498. feet

  1499. that

  1500. light

  1501. to

  1502. her

  1503. path

  1504. that

  1505. we

  1506. might

  1507. walk

  1508. in

  1509. the

  1510. truth

  1511. not

  1512. halting

  1513. not

  1514. limping

  1515. but

  1516. walking

  1517. !

  1518. because

  1519. it's

  1520. the

  1521. great

  1522. outcome

  1523. that

  1524. the

  1525. psalmist

  1526. desires

  1527. in

  1528. his

  1529. petition

  1530. here

  1531. in

  1532. this

  1533. cry

  1534. of

  1535. poverty

  1536. in

  1537. this

  1538. cry

  1539. where

  1540. he

  1541. says

  1542. to

  1543. God

  1544. incline

  1545. your

  1546. ear

  1547. and

  1548. answer

  1549. me

  1550. for

  1551. I

  1552. am

  1553. poor

  1554. and

  1555. needy

  1556. and

  1557. this

  1558. is

  1559. my

  1560. need

  1561. teach

  1562. me

  1563. your

  1564. way

  1565. O

  1566. Lord

  1567. that

  1568. I

  1569. may

  1570. walk

  1571. in

  1572. your

  1573. truth

  1574. and

  1575. then

  1576. he

  1577. comes

  1578. to

  1579. pour

  1580. out

  1581. before

  1582. God

  1583. a

  1584. great

  1585. hindrance

  1586. that

  1587. he

  1588. is

  1589. conscious

  1590. of

  1591. the

  1592. need

  1593. for

  1594. God

  1595. to

  1596. unite

  1597. his

  1598. heart

  1599. what

  1600. about

  1601. your

  1602. own

  1603. heart

  1604. tonight

  1605. what

  1606. about

  1607. my

  1608. heart

  1609. am I

  1610. before

  1611. God

  1612. tonight

  1613. with

  1614. a

  1615. heart

  1616. that

  1617. is

  1618. united

  1619. are

  1620. you

  1621. before

  1622. God

  1623. tonight

  1624. with

  1625. a

  1626. heart

  1627. that

  1628. is

  1629. united

  1630. the

  1631. psalmist

  1632. here

  1633. wasn't

  1634. he

  1635. was

  1636. so

  1637. conscious

  1638. of

  1639. a

  1640. divided

  1641. heart

  1642. and

  1643. he

  1644. says

  1645. unite

  1646. my

  1647. heart

  1648. to

  1649. fear

  1650. your

  1651. name

  1652. and

  1653. it's

  1654. such

  1655. a

  1656. barrier

  1657. to

  1658. us

  1659. in

  1660. our

  1661. earthly

  1662. pilgrimage

  1663. when

  1664. the

  1665. heart

  1666. is

  1667. divided

  1668. it's

  1669. the

  1670. very

  1671. thing

  1672. that

  1673. brings

  1674. such

  1675. dis

  1676. peace

  1677. into

  1678. our

  1679. relationship

  1680. when

  1681. the

  1682. heart

  1683. becomes

  1684. divided

  1685. imagine

  1686. if you

  1687. will

  1688. for a

  1689. moment

  1690. a

  1691. teenage

  1692. boy

  1693. and

  1694. a

  1695. teenage

  1696. girl

  1697. and

  1698. they

  1699. begin

  1700. a

  1701. relationship

  1702. and

  1703. they

  1704. only

  1705. have

  1706. as

  1707. we've

  1708. all

  1709. seen

  1710. and

  1711. experienced

  1712. some

  1713. of

  1714. us

  1715. eyes

  1716. for

  1717. each

  1718. other

  1719. they

  1720. can't

  1721. bear

  1722. to

  1723. be

  1724. apart

  1725. and

  1726. when

  1727. they're

  1728. together

  1729. they

  1730. just

  1731. want

  1732. to

  1733. talk

  1734. about

  1735. each

  1736. other

  1737. that

  1738. depth

  1739. of

  1740. feeling

  1741. and

  1742. the

  1743. heart

  1744. being

  1745. united

  1746. and

  1747. yet

  1748. into

  1749. that

  1750. closeness

  1751. something

  1752. comes in

  1753. that

  1754. begins

  1755. to

  1756. contend

  1757. for the

  1758. affection

  1759. of

  1760. one

  1761. or

  1762. the

  1763. other

  1764. perhaps

  1765. the

  1766. boy

  1767. starts

  1768. to

  1769. play

  1770. football

  1771. and

  1772. begins

  1773. to

  1774. enjoy

  1775. his

  1776. football

  1777. and

  1778. spend

  1779. a lot

  1780. of

  1781. time

  1782. with

  1783. the

  1784. boys

  1785. who

  1786. are

  1787. playing

  1788. football

  1789. and

  1790. all

  1791. of a

  1792. sudden

  1793. whereas

  1794. time

  1795. was

  1796. fully

  1797. devoted

  1798. and

  1799. committed

  1800. to

  1801. the

  1802. relationship

  1803. now

  1804. it's

  1805. not

  1806. what

  1807. it

  1808. was

  1809. and

  1810. how

  1811. true

  1812. that

  1813. can

  1814. be

  1815. in

  1816. our

  1817. spiritual

  1818. relationship

  1819. where

  1820. the

  1821. heart

  1822. that

  1823. once

  1824. was

  1825. united

  1826. now

  1827. becomes

  1828. divided

  1829. is it

  1830. not the

  1831. great

  1832. charge

  1833. that

  1834. Christ

  1835. laid

  1836. before

  1837. the

  1838. church

  1839. in

  1840. Ephesus

  1841. when

  1842. he

  1843. said

  1844. to

  1845. them

  1846. after

  1847. having

  1848. listed

  1849. the

  1850. qualities

  1851. for

  1852. which

  1853. they

  1854. were

  1855. to

  1856. be

  1857. commended

  1858. and

  1859. he

  1860. did

  1861. that

  1862. and

  1863. they

  1864. were

  1865. not

  1866. few

  1867. and

  1868. they

  1869. were

  1870. commended

  1871. and

  1872. then

  1873. solemnly

  1874. this

  1875. has

  1876. to

  1877. cut

  1878. right

  1879. across

  1880. the

  1881. whole

  1882. thing

  1883. and

  1884. he

  1885. says

  1886. but

  1887. I

  1888. have

  1889. somewhat

  1890. against

  1891. thee

  1892. thou

  1893. has

  1894. left

  1895. thy

  1896. first

  1897. love

  1898. there's

  1899. a

  1900. breach

  1901. thou

  1902. has

  1903. left

  1904. thy

  1905. first

  1906. love

  1907. oh

  1908. how

  1909. we

  1910. remember

  1911. the

  1912. fervency

  1913. of

  1914. the

  1915. first

  1916. love

  1917. how

  1918. we

  1919. longed

  1920. to

  1921. be in

  1922. the

  1923. means

  1924. of

  1925. grace

  1926. with

  1927. the

  1928. singular

  1929. desire

  1930. that we

  1931. spoke

  1932. of

  1933. burning

  1934. in

  1935. the

  1936. heart

  1937. the

  1938. heart

  1939. so

  1940. sorrowful

  1941. when the

  1942. benediction

  1943. would be

  1944. pronounced

  1945. here on

  1946. the

  1947. sabbath

  1948. evening

  1949. thinking

  1950. of the

  1951. days

  1952. that lay

  1953. between

  1954. you

  1955. and

  1956. being here

  1957. again

  1958. in this

  1959. precious

  1960. place

  1961. to

  1962. receive

  1963. fresh

  1964. supplies

  1965. in the

  1966. means

  1967. of

  1968. grace

  1969. and

  1970. here

  1971. the

  1972. psalmist

  1973. comes

  1974. with

  1975. his

  1976. great

  1977. petition

  1978. teach

  1979. me

  1980. your

  1981. way

  1982. oh

  1983. lord

  1984. that

  1985. I

  1986. may

  1987. walk

  1988. in

  1989. your

  1990. truth

  1991. unite

  1992. my

  1993. heart

  1994. because

  1995. it

  1996. is

  1997. only

  1998. with

  1999. a

  2000. united

  2001. heart

  2002. that

  2003. I

  2004. can

  2005. fulfill

  2006. the

  2007. depth

  2008. of

  2009. my

  2010. desire

  2011. which

  2012. is

  2013. to

  2014. fear

  2015. your

  2016. name

  2017. and

  2018. it

  2019. brings

  2020. before

  2021. us

  2022. the

  2023. solemnity

  2024. of

  2025. the

  2026. duty

  2027. that

  2028. we

  2029. are

  2030. to

  2031. engage

  2032. in

  2033. continually

  2034. that

  2035. of

  2036. keeping

  2037. the

  2038. heart

  2039. the

  2051. commend

  2052. it

  2053. to

  2055. because

  2056. I

  2057. think

  2058. it's

  2059. a

  2060. book

  2061. that's

  2062. foundational

  2139. the

  2141. of

  2142. life

  2143. the

  2145. hadn't

  2146. been

  2147. keeping

  2148. his

  2150. his

  2151. heart

  2152. had

  2153. become

  2154. divided

  2155. and

  2156. Flavel

  2157. speaks

  2158. about

  2159. that

  2160. in

  2161. the

  2162. book

  2163. in it

  2164. he

  2165. says

  2166. the

  2168. difficulty

  2169. in

  2171. is

  2172. to

  2173. win

  2174. the

  2176. to

  2178. how

  2186. of

  2187. us

  2192. that

  2193. we

  2194. find

  2195. ourselves

  2196. possibly

  2197. in

  2198. one

  2199. level

  2200. a

  2201. day

  2202. of

  2203. greater

  2204. outreach

  2205. and

  2206. evangelism

  2207. than

  2208. any

  2209. of

  2210. us

  2211. have

  2212. ever

  2213. seen

  2214. the

  2215. fact

  2216. that

  2217. wherever

  2218. the

  2219. furthest

  2220. point

  2221. in

  2222. the

  2223. world

  2224. tonight

  2232. able

  2233. to

  2234. listen

  2235. to

  2236. this

  2237. the

  2238. vast

  2239. resource

  2240. that is

  2241. available

  2242. in the

  2244. that we

  2251. the

  2252. Christian

  2253. teaching

  2254. everything

  2255. that is

  2256. there

  2257. and how

  2258. little

  2259. do we

  2260. hear

  2261. in the

  2262. day

  2263. in which

  2264. we're

  2265. found

  2266. of the

  2267. work of

  2268. regeneration

  2269. and how

  2270. profound

  2271. does that

  2272. statement

  2273. of

  2274. Flavel

  2275. become

  2276. in

  2277. 2025

  2278. the

  2279. greatest

  2280. difficulty

  2281. in

  2282. conversion

  2283. is to

  2284. win

  2285. the

  2286. heart

  2287. to

  2288. God

  2289. but

  2290. then he

  2291. comes

  2292. to

  2293. this

  2294. perhaps

  2295. the

  2296. most

  2297. solemn

  2298. statement

  2299. in the

  2300. whole

  2301. little

  2302. book

  2303. the

  2304. greatest

  2305. difficulty

  2308. is to

  2309. keep

  2310. the

  2311. heart

  2312. with

  2313. God

  2314. the

  2316. knew what

  2317. that

  2318. meant

  2319. John

  2320. Newton

  2321. knew what

  2322. that

  2323. meant

  2324. I

  2325. know

  2326. what

  2327. that

  2328. means

  2329. and

  2330. every

  2331. recipient

  2332. of saving

  2333. grace

  2334. in here

  2335. tonight

  2336. knows

  2337. what

  2338. that

  2339. means

  2340. the

  2341. greatest

  2342. difficulty

  2343. after

  2344. conversion

  2345. is to

  2346. keep

  2347. the

  2348. heart

  2349. with

  2350. God

  2351. and

  2352. it

  2353. becomes

  2354. each

  2355. and

  2356. every

  2357. one

  2358. of

  2359. us

  2360. to

  2361. take

  2362. this

  2363. petition

  2364. away

  2365. to

  2366. retain

  2367. it

  2368. to

  2369. reflect

  2370. it

  2371. and

  2372. seek

  2373. that

  2374. in

  2375. the

  2376. outworking

  2377. of

  2378. our

  2379. lives

  2380. we

  2381. would

  2382. engage

  2383. with

  2384. the

  2385. spirit

  2386. the

  2387. desire

  2388. of

  2389. the

  2390. psalmist

  2391. and

  2392. each

  2393. day

  2394. as

  2395. we

  2396. step

  2397. out

  2398. into

  2399. the

  2400. day

  2401. that

  2402. we

  2403. would

  2404. do

  2405. so

  2406. as

  2407. grace

  2408. dependent

  2409. children

  2410. recognizing

  2411. our

  2412. need

  2413. of

  2414. dependence

  2415. upon

  2416. God

  2417. because

  2418. be

  2419. assured

  2420. of

  2421. this

  2422. each

  2423. and

  2424. every

  2425. one

  2426. of

  2427. us

  2428. will

  2429. step

  2430. out

  2431. into

  2432. tomorrow

  2433. of

  2434. a

  2435. prayer

  2436. that

  2437. was

  2438. offered

  2439. up

  2440. by

  2441. a

  2442. revered

  2443. name

  2444. in

  2445. this

  2446. congregation

  2447. an

  2448. elder

  2449. by

  2450. the

  2451. name

  2452. of

  2453. Murdo

  2454. Maccinnon

  2455. called up

  2456. in prayer

  2457. one night

  2458. and he

  2459. began

  2460. his

  2461. prayer

  2462. by

  2463. saying

  2464. Lord

  2465. I

  2466. am

  2467. nothing

  2468. and

  2469. nothing

  2470. is

  2471. nothing

  2472. do

  2473. we

  2474. step

  2475. out

  2476. tomorrow

  2477. in

  2478. that

  2479. way

  2480. or

  2481. do

  2482. we

  2483. step

  2484. out

  2485. the

  2486. other

  2487. way

  2488. and

  2489. just

  2490. say

  2491. without

  2492. thee

  2493. I

  2494. can

  2495. do

  2496. anything

  2497. and

  2498. there

  2499. is

  2500. no

  2501. prayer

  2502. and

  2503. how

  2504. it

  2505. becomes

  2506. us

  2507. to

  2508. embed

  2509. this

  2510. petition

  2511. into

  2512. our

  2513. daily

  2514. walk

  2515. and

  2516. witness

  2517. for

  2518. God

  2519. and

  2520. say

  2521. teach

  2522. me

  2523. thy

  2524. way

  2525. and

  2526. in

  2527. thy

  2528. truth

  2529. O

  2530. Lord

  2531. then

  2532. walk

  2533. will

  2534. I

  2535. unite

  2536. my

  2537. heart

  2538. that

  2539. I

  2540. thy

  2541. name

  2542. may

  2543. fear

  2544. continually

  2545. the

  2546. psalmist

  2547. finally

  2548. leaves us

  2549. a beautiful

  2550. petition

  2551. further on

  2552. in

  2553. psalm

  2554. 119

  2555. and

  2556. he

  2557. saw

  2558. the

  2559. value

  2560. of

  2561. the

  2562. word

  2563. and

  2564. this

  2565. is

  2566. what

  2567. he

  2568. said

  2569. thy

  2570. word

  2571. I

  2572. have

  2573. hid

  2574. in

  2575. my

  2576. heart

  2577. that

  2578. I

  2579. offend

  2580. not

  2581. thee

  2582. Spurgeon

  2583. said

  2584. of

  2585. that

  2586. the

  2587. best

  2588. thing

  2589. the

  2590. word

  2591. in

  2592. the

  2593. best

  2594. place

  2595. the

  2596. heart

  2597. with

  2598. the

  2599. best

  2600. purpose

  2601. that

  2602. I

  2603. offend

  2604. not

  2605. thee

  2606. a

  2607. life

  2608. that

  2609. is

  2610. led

  2611. and

  2612. a

  2613. life

  2614. that

  2615. is

  2616. lived

  2617. in

  2618. this

  2619. way

  2620. becomes

  2621. a

  2622. very

  2623. distinct

  2624. life

  2625. and a

  2626. very

  2627. powerful

  2628. and

  2629. prominent

  2630. witness

  2631. when we

  2632. enter into

  2633. the fullness

  2634. of this

  2635. teach me

  2636. your way

  2637. oh lord

  2638. that I

  2639. may walk

  2640. in your

  2641. truth

  2642. unite my

  2643. heart to

  2644. fear

  2645. your name

  2646. I

  2647. close with

  2648. a thought

  2649. from one

  2650. of the

  2651. Puritans

  2652. who said

  2653. that

  2654. lives

  2655. like this

  2656. become

  2657. very

  2658. very

  2659. distinct

  2660. lives

  2661. that so

  2662. many of

  2663. us know

  2664. as we

  2665. recall

  2666. a generation

  2667. who went

  2668. before us

  2669. distinct

  2670. in their

  2671. walk

  2672. and their

  2673. witness

  2674. and this

  2675. is what

  2676. the

  2677. Puritans

  2678. said

  2679. there is

  2680. a life

  2681. that

  2682. speaks

  2683. much

  2684. and

  2685. says

  2686. little

  2687. there is

  2688. a life

  2689. that speaks

  2690. much

  2691. and

  2692. says

  2693. little

  2694. and how

  2695. in the

  2696. darkness

  2697. of the

  2698. world

  2699. that we

  2700. live

  2701. today

  2702. is the

  2703. need

  2704. for that

  2705. profound

  2706. shining

  2707. of God's

  2708. grace

  2709. in lives

  2710. that will

  2711. speak

  2712. much

  2713. and say

  2714. little

  2715. and so

  2716. as we

  2717. close

  2718. it is

  2719. with a

  2720. prayer

  2721. that as

  2722. we leave

  2723. this place

  2724. tonight

  2725. we may

  2726. do so

  2727. with the

  2728. power of

  2729. God's

  2730. spirit

  2731. enabling us

  2732. to receive

  2733. the word

  2734. to retain

  2735. it

  2736. to reflect

  2737. it

  2738. and to

  2739. live lives

  2740. that are

  2741. regulated

  2742. by its

  2743. teaching

  2744. let's

  2745. bow our

  2746. heads

  2747. sovereign

  2748. father in

  2749. heaven we

  2750. do give

  2751. thanks unto

  2752. thee for

  2753. the voice

  2754. that is

  2755. thy truth

  2756. and its

  2757. teaching

  2758. and we

  2759. pray oh

  2760. lord our

  2761. god that

  2762. thou would

  2763. open our

  2764. hearts

  2765. and

  2766. infuse

  2767. the fullness

  2768. of it

  2769. into our

  2770. capacity

  2771. that we

  2772. would be

  2773. enabled to

  2774. learn

  2775. and that

  2776. we would

  2777. be enabled

  2778. to find

  2779. the fullness

  2780. of life

  2781. that is to

  2782. be found

  2783. reconciled to

  2784. thee in the

  2785. finished work

  2786. of christ

  2787. for this is

  2788. man's chief

  2789. end to

  2790. glorify thee

  2791. and to

  2792. enjoy thee

  2793. forever

  2794. and may we

  2795. know the

  2796. fullness of

  2797. that

  2798. in jesus

  2799. name we

  2800. ask

  2801. amen

  2802. we conclude

  2803. our worship

  2804. this evening

  2805. singing from

  2806. psalm 25

  2807. from the

  2808. scottish

  2809. psalter

  2810. on page

  2811. 231

  2812. where the

  2813. psalmist with

  2814. these words

  2815. takes up

  2816. once more

  2817. the very

  2818. petitions that

  2819. we have been

  2820. reflecting upon

  2821. tonight

  2822. surely

  2823. a powerful

  2824. evidence of

  2825. to us

  2826. of his

  2827. need

  2828. show me

  2829. thy ways

  2830. oh lord

  2831. thy paths

  2832. so teach

  2833. thou me
