  1. And we're going to begin now by singing to God's praise in Psalm number 63.

  2. ! This is from the Scottish Psalter, Psalm number 63.

  3. It's on page 295 in the Blue Books, and the tune is Weatherby, Psalm 63.

  4. As I have seen thee heretofore within thy holy place, since better is thy love than life,

  5. my lips thee praise shall give. I in thy name will lift my hands and bless thee while I live.

  6. Even as with marrow and with fat my soul shall fill it be.

  7. Then shall my mouth with joyful lips sing praises unto thee.

  8. To the end of verse 8, Psalm 63, verses 1 to 8, and the tune is Weatherby,

    Psalms 63:1–8

  9. Lord, thee my God, I'll early see.

  10. Amen.

  11. Let thy heart shines, when no water shines, but thy thy power may behold,

  12. Behold, the brightness of thy face,

  13. as I have seen thee near to forth

  14. within thy holy place.

  15. Since betterness, thy love the night,

  16. my mercy reign shall give.

  17. I give, I give, will end my arms.

  18. I bless thee, my life, I live.

  19. I pass with my,

  20. O angel, my soul shall be let thee,

  21. and shall my love with joyfulness

  22. sing Christmas unto thee.

  23. When I do thee upon my bed,

  24. remember with delight,

  25. and wake on thee,

  26. I meditate,

  27. and watch this all the night.

  28. In shadow, I live, I enjoy,

  29. for thou my help us be.

  30. My soul thee follows hard,

  31. and thee thy light and dust sustain.

  32. Amen.

  33. Let us bow and pray.

  34. Amen.

  35. The psalmist said,

  36. Lord, thee my God,

  37. I'll early seek.

  38. My soul doth thirst for thee.

  39. And we pray that we also

  40. will have that thirsting soul

  41. where we'll be seeking after the living

  42. and through God.

  43. Help us, Lord,

  44. to realize that above all that we need

  45. and all that we should have in this world,

  46. the greatest blessing is to have you

  47. as our Lord and our Savior.

  48. And we pray that you will open our hearts

  49. and open our minds

  50. to discover more of you in the truth.

  51. We give thanks, Lord,

  52. for your word,

  53. because it is truly a lamp to our feet

  54. and a light to our path.

  55. We give thanks, Lord,

  56. for the reality of your truth

  57. and for the way it shows us

  58. so much of who you are

  59. and indeed of who we are ourselves.

  60. And it reveals to us our duties

  61. and our responsibilities before you.

  62. And so we pray for help and grace

  63. that we might walk in your paths.

  64. Because we have to confess, O Lord,

  65. that so often we are wayward.

  66. So often we walk with a limb spiritually.

  67. So often we wander spiritually.

  68. So often, Lord,

  69. we need the good shepherd going out after us.

  70. And so we pray that you will bless

  71. every single one of us here tonight

  72. and that our focus will be entirely upon yourself.

  73. We pray that we may be able to see you

  74. as the great, mighty Lord of heaven and earth,

  75. the one who spoke this very world into existence,

  76. the one who spoke the planetary system,

  77. the one who spoke all things into being.

  78. And we worship you tonight as the great creator God

  79. and the one who has not only brought life

  80. but continues to sustain life.

  81. And the God who rules and overrules all things.

  82. And that we give thanks, Lord,

  83. that even when our world, as we look out,

  84. may appear chaotic,

  85. that there is no chaos with you.

  86. And that you will order and bring things to a conclusion

  87. in your own way and at your own time.

  88. And so we pray that every day that we might live

  89. with an expectant heart,

  90. because one day the Lord will return without any warning.

  91. The word of God tells us to watch and to be ready.

  92. And so we pray that we might have that spirit

  93. and that we might have that eye of faith

  94. looking ever towards the heavens.

  95. We pray that you will bless each and every one of us tonight

  96. as we gather round your word.

  97. And we pray that you will open that word into our hearts,

  98. into our minds,

  99. and that it will go down deep,

  100. that it will affect us.

  101. Forbid, Lord, that we just come here as a sense of duty,

  102. like marking a card and then going away,

  103. that we might come with a genuine desire in our heart

  104. to know more of you,

  105. that there might be a true longing within our heart

  106. to grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  107. And we pray that we will not be those who simply hear the word

  108. and don't do it.

  109. That we pray, O Lord, that our lives might be lives of faith

  110. and help us to remember that what is not of faith is sin.

  111. And so we pray that faith will govern and guide us

  112. as we focus upon you as we journey through this life.

  113. We pray that you will be merciful to us as we come confessing our sin.

  114. We confess our sins personally, individually,

  115. and we also confess our sin collectively as a body of your people.

  116. And ask for that cleansing and that forgiveness,

  117. which is yours to give and which was achieved by yourself.

  118. And we pray that we might know what it is to be rid of the guilt and the shame that sin brings.

  119. And to have the peace of God that passes all understanding.

  120. And to have the freedom that comes in Jesus Christ.

  121. We pray that you will bless everybody here tonight according to our own individual needs.

  122. We all come with our own issues in life.

  123. And for some people, they might have very sad hearts.

  124. And yet they're hiding it.

  125. For other people, life might be going very well just now.

  126. We're all in different situations with different circumstances.

  127. But we pray, O Lord, that you will help each and every one of us according to our own particular needs.

  128. Bless homes.

  129. Bless families.

  130. Bless husbands and wives.

  131. Bless them.

  132. Bless parents.

  133. Bless children.

  134. Bless grandparents.

  135. Bless those who are so old now and infirm that they are no longer able to get out and about.

  136. And in fact, are now at a stage where they need to be cared for.

  137. We pray that you will be with them.

  138. And we give thanks, Lord, for all the care that we have in this community.

  139. And we give thanks, Lord, for the many blessings that are brought through that.

  140. We pray, Lord, for those who are in hospital.

  141. Those who are unwell.

  142. Those who are maybe waiting for treatment or undergoing it.

  143. Or likewise for surgery.

  144. We pray, Lord, your blessing upon them.

  145. And we give thanks for all that is done for us.

  146. We give thanks for our hospitals and for all that is done in so many different aspects and ways.

  147. And we give thanks, Lord.

  148. Help us always to be giving thanks.

  149. Because so often we can take for granted and just look and say, well, this is what's due us.

  150. This is what's all right.

  151. Help us to remember that everything ultimately comes from your hand.

  152. And so we pray that we might have thankful hearts.

  153. And that we might not be slow in giving the Lord thanks for all the many blessings that we receive from you.

  154. Pray to bless all the different activities of this congregation.

  155. As there will be a return to school tomorrow.

  156. And return to all the activities.

  157. We pray your blessing upon all that is done.

  158. Those who commit week by week and month by month to the ongoing work that takes place.

  159. We give thanks for them, for their willingness, and for their love for you.

  160. We pray that you'll bless them.

  161. Bless all who attend from the senior fellowship right all the way down to the creche.

  162. And ask your blessing upon them.

  163. We pray your blessing upon our young ones growing up.

  164. And a day full of challenges.

  165. Yes, opportunities.

  166. But a very different day to the day even when we grew up ourselves.

  167. And so we pray for them.

  168. And you will bless them.

  169. Bless all the instruction that they receive at home.

  170. And the instruction that they receive in Sunday school.

  171. And the youth fellowship.

  172. And at the various clubs.

  173. We ask, Lord, your blessing upon them.

  174. We pray that you will bless teachers as they go back.

  175. And pray safety upon the pupils.

  176. We pray that you will be with us nationally and internationally.

  177. Pray your blessing upon our leaders.

  178. And ask, Lord, that you will grant them divine wisdom.

  179. Even if they don't acknowledge you.

  180. Even if they don't look for it.

  181. But it is our duty.

  182. Our duty to pray for our King.

  183. It's our duty to pray for those in authority over us.

  184. And so we pray for them.

  185. Because if they don't pray, then who's going to pray?

  186. And so we pray that that wisdom from above will be given to lead us in the right way.

  187. We pray for truth to prevail.

  188. And we pray that you will raise up your people into places of position of prominence and authority.

  189. And so that their witness will be a good one in the day that we live.

  190. We pray for peace on earth.

  191. Oh, Lord, how we long.

  192. That nations would lay down their arms so that conflict would cease.

  193. And we realize that in so many parts of this world, right now, people are living in fear.

  194. People are so apprehensive.

  195. They don't know what the next moment is going to bring.

  196. We don't understand that, where we live.

  197. We give thanks for the safety and security we enjoy here.

  198. But it's not like that for many people in this world.

  199. There's so much suffering, bloodshed, hatred, violence.

  200. Oh, Lord, we long for a day when that violence will cease.

  201. And people will be able to live side by side, one with another.

  202. And it is really only in and through the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, where that radical, powerful change can take place.

  203. And so we pray for the spread of your word globally tonight.

  204. And we pray that many will come under the sound of the gospel.

  205. And that many will respond to the gospel.

  206. And so we pray your blessing upon your word, wherever it is preached throughout the nations of this world.

  207. We pray your blessing on the 40th reunion that took place.

  208. And we give thanks for these times along the way, where there's a time of meeting up together, time of reflecting,

  209. often time too of sadness of those who are no longer part of the group.

  210. And we pray your blessing upon them.

  211. And we give thanks, Lord, for the friendships that we make in life.

  212. Often school friends become lifelong friends.

  213. And we give thanks, Lord, for the way that these things enhance and enrich our lives.

  214. Watch over us then as we wait upon you.

  215. And take away from us our every sin.

  216. In Jesus' name we ask it. Amen.

  217. We're going to sing again from Psalm 32.

  218. And this is in Sing Psalms, Psalm 32.

  219. We're going to sing verses 1 to 7.

  220. It's on page 38 of the Tunis Arlington.

  221. Psalm 32.

  222. Psalm 32.

  223. Psalm 32.

  224. Verses 1 to 7.

  225. How blessed the one who has received forgiveness for a sin, whose sins are covered from God's face,

  226. whose debt is cancelled in God's grace.

  227. There's no deceit in him.

  228. Psalm 32.

  229. When I kept silent, all my bones with groaning were worn out.

  230. Beneath your hand I felt entrapped.

  231. Both day and night my strength was sapped, as in a summer drought.

  232. Then I laid bare my sin to you, the guilt that lay within.

  233. I said, O Lord, I have transgressed.

  234. And you forgave when I confessed.

  235. You pardoned all my sin.

  236. Psalm 32, verses 1 to 7.

    Psalms 32:1–7

  237. The Tunis Arlington.

  238. How blessed are the one who has received forgiveness for his sin.

  239. How blessed are the one who has received forgiveness for all his sin, whose sins are covered from God's face,

  240. whose death is God's face, whose death is God's face, whose death is God's face,

  241. whose death is cancelled in God's face, whose death is cancelled in God's face,

  242. whose death is cancelled in God's face,

  243. Death is counseled in God's grace.

  244. There's no deceit in heaven.

  245. When I kept silent all my wounds,

  246. With rolling weather worn out,

  247. Beneath your hand I felt a child.

  248. O day and night my strength was soft,

  249. Out in the summer cold.

  250. Then I leave my sin to you,

  251. The guilt that me within.

  252. I said, O Lord, I love God's grace,

  253. And you for me claim I confess,

  254. You pardon all my sins.

  255. So let the glory pray to you,

  256. While you are to be found.

  257. Surely when waves are singing past,

  258. And mighty waters rising fast,

  259. You keep them safe and sound.

  260. You are my hiding place,

  261. O Lord, my true security.

  262. You keep me safe in troubled days,

  263. You circle me with joyful grace,

  264. When you have set me free.

  265. Let's turn to read God's word now,

  266. In Paul's letter to the Corinthians,

  267. 2nd Corinthians, and chapter 5.

  268. 2nd Corinthians, chapter 5.

  269. And we'll read the chapter.

  270. For we know that if the tent,

  271. Which is our earthly home,

  272. Is destroyed,

  273. We have a building from God,

  274. A house not made with hands,

  275. Eternal in the heavens.

  276. For in this tent we groan,

  277. Longing to put on our heavenly dwelling,

  278. If indeed by putting it on,

  279. We may not be found naked.

  280. For while we are still in this tent,

  281. We groan, being burdened,

  282. Not that we would be unclothed,

  283. But that we would be further clothed,

  284. So that what is mortal

  285. May be swallowed up by life.

  286. He who has prepared us

  287. For this very thing is God,

  288. Who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

  289. So we are always of good courage.

  290. We know that while we are at home in the body,

  291. We are away from the Lord.

  292. For we walk by faith,

  293. Not by sight.

  294. Yes, we are of good courage,

  295. And we would rather be away from the body,

  296. And at home with the Lord.

  297. So, whether we are at home or away,

  298. We make it our aim to please Him.

  299. For we must all appear

  300. Before the judgment seat of Christ,

  301. So that each one may receive what is due,

  302. For what he has done in the body,

  303. Whether good or evil.

  304. Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord,

  305. We persuade others.

  306. But what we are is known to God,

  307. And I hope it is known also to your conscience.

  308. We are not commending ourselves to you again,

  309. But giving you cause to boast about us,

  310. So that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance,

  311. And not about what is in the heart.

  312. For if we are beside ourselves,

  313. It is for God.

  314. If we are in our right mind,

  315. It is for you.

  316. For the love of Christ controls us,

  317. Because we have concluded this,

  318. That one has died for all,

  319. Therefore all have died.

  320. And he died for all,

  321. That those who live might no longer live for themselves,

  322. But for him,

  323. Who for their sake died and was raised.

  324. From now on, therefore,

  325. We regard no one according to the flesh.

  326. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh,

  327. We regard him thus no longer.

  328. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,

  329. He is a new creation.

  330. The old has passed away,

  331. Behold, the new has come.

  332. All this is from God,

  333. Who through Christ reconciled us to himself,

  334. And gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

  335. That is, in Christ,

  336. God was reconciling the world to himself,

  337. Not counting their trespasses against them,

  338. And entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

  339. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ,

  340. God making his appeal through us.

  341. We implore you on behalf of Christ,

  342. Be reconciled to God.

  343. For our sake he made him to be sin,

  344. Who knew no sin,

  345. So that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  346. Amen.

  347. And may God bless to us this reading of his own holy word.

  348. I'm going to sing again now in Psalm 73,

  349. From the Scottish Psalter.

  350. Psalm 73,

  351. From verse 23,

  352. To the end,

  353. And the tune is Tiverton.

  354. Psalm 73,

  355. At verse 23,

  356. Page 316.

  357. Nevertheless,

  358. O Lord,

  359. I am with thee.

  360. Thou dost me hold by my right hand,

  361. And still upholdest me.

  362. Thou with thy counsel,

  363. While I live,

  364. Wilt me conduct and guide.

  365. And to thy glory afterward,

  366. Receive me to abide.

  367. Whom have I in the heavens high,

  368. But thee, O Lord, alone?

  369. And in the earth whom I desire,

  370. Besides thee there is none.

  371. My flesh and heart doth faint and fail,

  372. But God doth fail me never.

  373. For of my heart God is a strength,

  374. And a portion forever.

  375. Verses 23 to 28,

  376. Psalm 73,

  377. Nevertheless,

  378. Continually.

  379. Nevertheless,

  380. Continually,

  381. O Lord,

  382. I am with thee.

  383. Thou dost me hold by my right hand,

  384. And still upholdest me.

  385. Thou with thy counsel,

  386. Orth voyque voyque

  387. The heaven's sight, but thee, O Lord, alone.

  388. Hath in the earth, through thy desire,

  389. besides thee there is none.

  390. My flesh and heart doth inch and veil,

  391. but God doth veil me never.

  392. For of my heart God is the strength

  393. and portion forever.

  394. For, O they that are far from thee,

  395. forever perish shall,

  396. they plant a holding from thee, O

  397. the past destroyed all.

  398. But surely it is good for thee,

  399. that I draw near to all.

  400. And, O I just, that all my words

  401. I may declare abroad.

  402. Let's turn back again to the chapter we read

  403. in 2 Corinthians chapter 5.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  404. And it's a fairly long section,

  405. so I'm not going to read it all,

  406. but from verse 14.

  407. And I'm not going into every verse of it

  408. or every aspect of it,

  409. but just looking at it quite simply.

  410. For the love of Christ controls us,

  411. because we have concluded this,

  412. that one has died for all,

  413. therefore all have died.

  414. And he died for all,

  415. that those who live might no longer

  416. live for themselves,

  417. but for him who for their sake

  418. died and was raised.

  419. And then in verse 18,

  420. we read,

  421. all this is from God,

  422. who through Christ reconciled us

  423. to himself

  424. and gave us the ministry

  425. of reconciliation.

  426. That is, in Christ,

  427. God was reconciling the world

  428. to himself.

  429. Verse 20,

  430. therefore we are ambassadors for Christ,

  431. God making his appeal through us.

  432. We implore you on behalf of Christ,

  433. be reconciled to God.

  434. For our sake he made him to be sin

  435. who knew no sin,

  436. that in him we might become

  437. the righteousness of God.

  438. Now we know that Paul was a man

  439. who was on a mission,

  440. and Paul loved the Lord Jesus Christ.

  441. Paul lived for the Lord Jesus Christ,

  442. and Paul in the end

  443. was going to lay down his life

  444. for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  445. And he tells us here

  446. that it is the love of Christ

  447. that controls him,

  448. or as we have in the AV,

  449. constrains him.

  450. And that was very true

  451. in Paul's life.

  452. This was the driving force.

  453. This is what propelled him on.

  454. This is what gave the impetus

  455. to his life,

  456. this sense of the love of Christ.

  457. Of what God had done in Christ for Paul,

  458. and what God in Christ was doing for Paul.

  459. And if you're a believer tonight,

  460. you can echo the same,

  461. that what God has done for you in Christ,

  462. and what God is doing for you in Christ.

  463. And Paul sees this amazing love

  464. in the death of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  465. And when Paul talks about

  466. the death of Jesus Christ,

  467. he isn't just talking about

  468. a historical fact.

  469. You know, quite often people,

  470. they will talk about

  471. the death of Jesus,

  472. and they will say that,

  473. yes, Jesus died on a cross.

  474. And they will think of Jesus' death

  475. no more than any other person

  476. who was maybe executed.

  477. And they will say,

  478. well, he was either hung,

  479. or he was crucified,

  480. or he was beheaded,

  481. or whatever.

  482. And it's a historical fact.

  483. And they think about it like that.

  484. And there's others

  485. who might go a little further on,

  486. and they might say,

  487. well, Jesus Christ was

  488. a really quite remarkable person.

  489. His teaching was so extraordinary,

  490. and his moral life was beyond blemish

  491. in any shape or form.

  492. And he died the way he lived,

  493. a life of just self-sacrifice.

  494. And he died for what he taught.

  495. And a lot of people look at it

  496. just like that,

  497. and they say,

  498. he left a great example for us.

  499. That's not how Paul is looking at it,

  500. and neither should we.

  501. Because Paul is looking at why he died.

  502. What was taking place on the cross

  503. as he died.

  504. Because that is at the very heart

  505. of what Christianity really is all about.

  506. And that is why Paul,

  507. he says earlier on in Corinthians,

  508. for I decided to know nothing among you

  509. except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

  510. And that was a great message

  511. of all the early church,

  512. was preaching Jesus Christ

  513. and him crucified.

  514. And when they talked and preached that,

  515. it was what took place,

  516. and what that involved,

  517. and what it was for us as well.

  518. So what was Christ doing on the cross?

  519. Well, there's two or three things

  520. that we can see.

  521. Well, one of them,

  522. if we go right to the end,

  523. we see this word righteousness,

  524. that we might become

  525. the righteousness of God.

  526. So, an incredible transaction

  527. took place on the cross.

  528. Because the problem for all of us

  529. is that we don't have righteousness ourselves.

  530. The Bible tells us

  531. what a righteousness is like.

  532. It's like filthy rags.

  533. You know, sometimes when you're in the city,

  534. you sometimes see a poor,

  535. down and out,

  536. a poor beggar in a doorway.

  537. And they're looking utterly

  538. and absolutely disheveled.

  539. Their clothes are torn.

  540. Their face is dirty.

  541. And you say,

  542. oh, what a poor soul that is.

  543. Well, with regard to our righteousness,

  544. that's how it is in God's sight.

  545. Not one of us

  546. is able to say to the Lord,

  547. because I've done this,

  548. because I've done that,

  549. I have a claim upon you.

  550. And that's really hard for us

  551. to get hold of.

  552. Because we cling,

  553. it's very hard to uncover

  554. self-righteousness.

  555. And it's very hard

  556. for self-righteousness to be broken.

  557. Because we kind of judge one another.

  558. And a lot of people will say,

  559. they look around and they say,

  560. well, I know I'm not perfect.

  561. I know I would never dare

  562. to say I'm perfect.

  563. But I'm a pretty decent citizen.

  564. Never done anything

  565. drastically wrong.

  566. And sometimes you look at somebody

  567. and you say,

  568. oh, see what he did,

  569. see what she did.

  570. I would never have done that.

  571. And so we kind of,

  572. we puff ourselves up.

  573. That's a self-righteousness.

  574. It's very judgmental self-righteousness.

  575. But it's within us all.

  576. It's part of who we are.

  577. It's part of what we are.

  578. And we somehow think

  579. at the end of the day,

  580. the Lord will say,

  581. well, I know that you're not perfect.

  582. And I know that,

  583. but it's going to be all right.

  584. No, it doesn't.

  585. It's not.

  586. That's not the way it works.

  587. God says that,

  588. as we said,

  589. oh, right, you're right.

  590. There is none righteous.

  591. No, not one.

  592. In the whole wide world,

  593. ever,

  594. there's not one

  595. that has ever been righteous.

  596. And because we are unrighteous,

  597. it means that we are guilty

  598. before God.

  599. that we have no place of protection,

  600. that we have no shelter,

  601. because we're under,

  602. Scripture tells us,

  603. under God's wrath,

  604. because of our unrighteousness.

  605. But on the cross,

  606. God was doing something amazing.

  607. It was like,

  608. people describe it

  609. like in a bookkeeping term.

  610. And you have,

  611. on the one side,

  612. you have all the wrongs.

  613. And there's all your sin,

  614. past, present, future.

  615. All recorded.

  616. Everything you've said,

  617. everything you've done,

  618. everything you've ever thought.

  619. It's all there.

  620. And on the other page

  621. is Christ's righteousness.

  622. And on the cross,

  623. a transfer was taking place.

  624. Where all our sin

  625. was being placed

  626. to Christ's account.

  627. That's what he was experiencing

  628. through the abandonment

  629. and forsakenness

  630. when God's wrath

  631. was being poured upon him.

  632. For our sin.

  633. But more than that,

  634. Christ's righteousness

  635. has been placed

  636. to our account.

  637. It's not that all of a sudden

  638. we become perfect

  639. and altogether righteous.

  640. But in legal terms,

  641. as God looks on us,

  642. once you become a believer,

  643. God looks at you

  644. through Jesus.

  645. And as he looks at you

  646. through Jesus,

  647. he sees the perfect

  648. righteousness of his Son.

  649. And so you're accepted

  650. because of what Jesus Christ

  651. has done.

  652. And so there's this

  653. incredible transaction

  654. taking place on the cross.

  655. And sometimes it's hard

  656. for us to understand that

  657. and to understand

  658. that we are as righteous

  659. as we will ever be

  660. in God's sight.

  661. There's another level,

  662. of course,

  663. we know with regard

  664. to our ongoing sin

  665. and such like.

  666. But in legal terms,

  667. that's how it is.

  668. But another thing

  669. was taking place

  670. on the cross

  671. and we see that

  672. in verses 18 and 19

  673. because it tells us here

  674. that God,

  675. through Christ,

  676. reconciled us to himself.

  677. Verse 19,

  678. in Christ,

  679. God was reconciling

  680. the world to himself.

  681. Because you see,

  682. by nature,

  683. we're alienated from God.

  684. God,

  685. we're estranged from God.

  686. That's our default position.

  687. We don't want God.

  688. We're ignorant of God.

  689. God,

  690. don't care about God.

  691. I suppose if you went

  692. around Stornway tonight

  693. and you did a survey,

  694. there'd be a lot of people

  695. who would say,

  696. I don't believe in God.

  697. I never think about God.

  698. I don't care about God.

  699. And people often find

  700. that God's word,

  701. when they hear it,

  702. they find that

  703. his word is intolerable

  704. and that his law

  705. is distasteful.

  706. And they say,

  707. no,

  708. I don't want this.

  709. As we're hearing this morning,

  710. we want our life

  711. and we don't want anything

  712. cutting across our life.

  713. And that's so true.

  714. That's the way we are by nature.

  715. It's my life

  716. and I will live it my way

  717. and I'm not in any way ready

  718. to live my life

  719. with somebody else ruling,

  720. somebody else on the throne

  721. of my heart.

  722. It's mine.

  723. Me.

  724. Mine.

  725. And so,

  726. by nature,

  727. we are alienated.

  728. We're strangers to God.

  729. We're at enmity.

  730. We're told in Scripture

  731. that the haters of God,

  732. who is the Lord,

  733. it says in Scripture,

  734. that we should obey him.

  735. Also, remember what it says,

  736. we will not have this man

  737. rule over us.

  738. So, you see,

  739. there's this alienation

  740. which needs reconciliation.

  741. So, reconciliation is essential,

  742. but here's the thing.

  743. It's not just us

  744. that have to be reconciled to God,

  745. but God has to be reconciled to us.

  746. And that's a serious thing.

  747. Why?

  748. Because, well,

  749. we know the story in Genesis 3.

  750. We know what happened.

  751. We remember the story of the fall,

  752. of how Adam and Eve disobeyed God.

  753. And how do we find Adam and Eve after that?

  754. We find them outside the garden.

  755. How did they end up outside the garden?

  756. Did they get lost?

  757. Did they sort of wander out?

  758. And did Adam turn to Eve and say,

  759. oh, you know,

  760. we've gone outside the garden here.

  761. We'll have to try and get back in.

  762. No.

  763. What did God do?

  764. He drove them out of the garden.

  765. He expelled them.

  766. And more than that,

  767. there was an angel with a flaming sword

  768. barring their way back in,

  769. lest they come to the tree of life.

  770. So, from that moment on,

  771. we need reconciliation with God,

  772. but God has to be reconciled to us as well.

  773. Because God is against us.

  774. His wrath is against us.

  775. We're told that in Romans,

  776. that the wrath of God

  777. is revealed from heaven

  778. against all ungodliness.

  779. As we say,

  780. that's a default position.

  781. You know,

  782. it's a grim situation.

  783. But that's how it is.

  784. And that's the wonder

  785. of what has happened here.

  786. That there's reconciliation.

  787. And the wonderful thing is

  788. that God,

  789. the God who has been wronged,

  790. is the author

  791. of this reconciliation.

  792. reconciliation.

  793. Now,

  794. usually when we think

  795. of reconciliation

  796. in human terms,

  797. in our everyday thing,

  798. we always talk about negotiation.

  799. Supposing it's just

  800. within a family,

  801. supposing there's a breakup

  802. in a family,

  803. there's,

  804. you try and,

  805. and you need,

  806. you need both parties

  807. coming together.

  808. You'll often see it

  809. in employment,

  810. in work.

  811. And you'll see that

  812. the workers

  813. and the management

  814. have reached an impasse.

  815. And often you'll find

  816. there's a strike

  817. takes place.

  818. Because neither side

  819. will agree.

  820. And there's an ongoing strike.

  821. And then all of a sudden

  822. you see,

  823. oh,

  824. there's talks taking place.

  825. There's negotiation.

  826. And when there's negotiation

  827. taking place,

  828. there's always hope

  829. that there'll be

  830. an outcome,

  831. a good outcome.

  832. We see it again

  833. in global conflicts.

  834. And we've seen it

  835. with the likes of Ukraine

  836. and in Gaza.

  837. And you're saying,

  838. just it's ongoing.

  839. And then you hear

  840. there might be talks.

  841. And there's always this hope.

  842. Oh,

  843. the moment people start talking,

  844. you're saying,

  845. well,

  846. hopefully,

  847. hopefully this will bring

  848. a solution.

  849. Hopefully we'll get

  850. things together.

  851. Is that how it was

  852. with us and God?

  853. No.

  854. Because we couldn't

  855. negotiate with God.

  856. We had nothing

  857. to negotiate with.

  858. We couldn't even

  859. approach God.

  860. So this is the

  861. extraordinary thing

  862. that God

  863. is the one.

  864. He is the initiator

  865. of it.

  866. God is the one

  867. who has

  868. initiated

  869. and that was what

  870. Christ was doing

  871. on the cross.

  872. However,

  873. there were negotiations.

  874. And the negotiations

  875. that took place

  876. with regard to

  877. reconciliation

  878. took place in heaven.

  879. because Christ,

  880. the Son of God,

  881. entered into a covenant

  882. with God the Father.

  883. So the negotiation

  884. for the reconciliation

  885. took place in heaven

  886. where the Son

  887. agreed to come

  888. in our nature.

  889. Think of it.

  890. The Son of God,

  891. the one who is equal

  892. in power and glory

  893. to the Father,

  894. took our nature,

  895. became one with us

  896. to be our representative

  897. in this world

  898. in order to

  899. reconcile us

  900. to God the Father.

  901. And so all this

  902. was taking place

  903. on the cross

  904. where God was

  905. reconciling us

  906. to himself

  907. through the work

  908. of Christ.

  909. And again,

  910. when you think

  911. of the cross

  912. and you think

  913. of these hours

  914. of desolation

  915. and isolation

  916. and abandonment

  917. for Christ,

  918. what was he suffering?

  919. Right?

  920. Try and turn this

  921. personally.

  922. And you think,

  923. try and say to you,

  924. right,

  925. for the next three hours,

  926. I'm going to list

  927. every wrong deed

  928. that I have done

  929. that I can remember.

  930. and I'm going

  931. to write it down.

  932. And I'm going

  933. to write down

  934. everything wrong

  935. that I said.

  936. And you're writing

  937. down things

  938. that you're ashamed of,

  939. things that embarrassed

  940. you,

  941. things that you felt

  942. real guilt about,

  943. things that you

  944. were remorseful about,

  945. and you so wish

  946. that you had never

  947. said them

  948. or never done them.

  949. And what about

  950. our thoughts?

  951. Imagine if there's

  952. a big screen here

  953. at the back of the pulpit.

  954. And every thought

  955. that you thought

  956. was screened up there.

  957. Every thought.

  958. And when you think

  959. of all the filth

  960. and the anger

  961. and the murder,

  962. every commandment

  963. is breached

  964. in our mind.

  965. Every single one.

  966. Can you imagine

  967. the shame

  968. and embarrassment

  969. and the sense

  970. of guilt

  971. we would have

  972. if it was all

  973. screened

  974. for everybody

  975. to see,

  976. I don't think

  977. we'd ever come

  978. out of the house

  979. again.

  980. Well, on the cross,

  981. Christ was bearing

  982. all our guilt,

  983. all our shame,

  984. all our embarrassment,

  985. all the defilement

  986. of our sin

  987. and our iniquity,

  988. everything.

  989. and he was enduring

  990. the Father's wrath

  991. upon him

  992. for our sin.

  993. It's that personal

  994. because sometimes

  995. we look at it

  996. in an abstract way.

  997. But this was personal,

  998. right on.

  999. And there was nothing

  1000. for Christ

  1001. but silence.

  1002. He couldn't hear

1003. the walk of the Father

1004. or the talk of the Father,

  1005. just his anger.

  1006. And this is what

  1007. he was doing

  1008. for us

  1009. in order that

  1010. we can be reconciled.

  1011. What was

  1012. keeping us away

  1013. had to be removed.

  1014. And of course,

1015. it is the work then

  1016. of the Holy Spirit

  1017. to apply

  1018. that to our hearts.

  1019. And that is what

  1020. Paul talks about

  1021. in verse 17.

  1022. Therefore,

  1023. if anyone

  1024. is in Christ,

1025. he is a new creation.

1026. The old has passed away

  1027. because the new

  1028. has come.

  1029. And that's exactly

  1030. what happens

1031. when we come to faith.

  1032. It's a new creation.

  1033. Every bit as powerful

  1034. and as awesome

  1035. as the original creation.

  1036. At the very start,

  1037. God said,

  1038. let there be light.

1039. And there was a day

  1040. God said

  1041. into your heart,

  1042. let there be light.

  1043. And you saw

  1044. in a way

  1045. you never saw before.

  1046. You saw the way

  1047. of salvation.

  1048. You saw Christ

  1049. as your Savior.

  1050. And

  1051. everything changed

  1052. because you have

  1053. new desires,

  1054. new aims,

  1055. new ambitions,

  1056. new hopes.

  1057. The Word of God,

1058. you might have been used

  1059. to reading the Bible,

  1060. but it was maybe

  1061. just out of habit

  1062. or out of duty.

  1063. But now this book

  1064. has become precious

  1065. to you.

  1066. And every day

  1067. you go to it

  1068. because it gives you

  1069. food for your soul,

  1070. gives you nourishment,

  1071. gives you light.

  1072. it sets out

  1073. before you

  1074. the whole future

  1075. of what's ahead

  1076. for you.

  1077. This book is just

  1078. the most amazing book

  1079. in the world.

  1080. And that is because

  1081. you are now

  1082. a new creation.

1083. And this is all part

  1084. of what the Lord

  1085. has done for us,

  1086. what God was doing

  1087. for us

  1088. in Christ Jesus.

1089. And so because of this,

1090. now there's lots of things

  1091. we could look at,

  1092. but because of this,

  1093. it tells us now

  1094. that we are ambassadors

  1095. for Christ.

  1096. Prior to that,

  1097. it tells us

  1098. that we no longer

  1099. live for ourselves,

  1100. but we live

  1101. for Christ.

  1102. That'll tell you

  1103. exactly tonight

  1104. where you are.

1105. Who do you live for?

  1106. Is it yourself?

1107. Or is it for Christ?

  1108. You know that

  1109. sometimes we fear

  1110. that we're not living

  1111. for Christ

  1112. in the way

  1113. that we should.

  1114. But you know,

  1115. one of the things

1116. that makes it so clear

  1117. to us is,

  1118. you know when you

  1119. do anything wrong

  1120. or say wrong

  1121. or you think wrong,

  1122. what's your immediate thought?

  1123. I'm letting Christ down.

1124. It's not letting yourself down.

  1125. There was a day

  1126. you only thought

  1127. about letting yourself down.

  1128. You never thought

  1129. about the Lord.

  1130. Oh, I've let myself

  1131. down badly here.

  1132. That's not the way

  1133. you think now.

  1134. You say,

  1135. oh Lord,

  1136. have mercy on me.

  1137. Oh, forgive me Lord.

  1138. I shouldn't have said that.

  1139. I shouldn't have done that.

  1140. What on earth

  1141. has been going on

  1142. in my head?

  1143. Because you're living

  1144. for Christ.

  1145. You see,

  1146. it's all changed.

1147. That's the way you live.

  1148. Every day,

  1149. you're living

  1150. not for yourself,

  1151. but you're living

  1152. for Christ.

  1153. But we're told here

  1154. that we are ambassadors.

  1155. Ambassadors.

  1156. Therefore,

  1157. we are ambassadors

  1158. for Christ.

  1159. God making

  1160. his appeal

  1161. through us.

  1162. Isn't that amazing?

  1163. All of us.

  1164. God is making

  1165. an appeal

  1166. through us.

  1167. Now,

  1168. an ambassador,

  1169. as you know,

  1170. is somebody

  1171. who represents

  1172. king and country.

  1173. And when an ambassador

1174. goes to a certain place,

  1175. he's not there

  1176. in any way

  1177. or shape

  1178. or form

  1179. to represent himself.

  1180. He's not there

  1181. for his own glory,

  1182. his own honor.

  1183. It's got nothing

  1184. to do with him.

1185. It's all got to do

  1186. with the king

  1187. and the country

  1188. that he represents.

1189. So it is for you

  1190. and for me.

  1191. It's not about us.

  1192. It's all about

  1193. the Lord.

  1194. The ambassador

  1195. has to be

  1196. absolutely faithful

  1197. to the message

  1198. that he or she

  1199. brings.

  1200. Not at liberty

  1201. to add to it.

  1202. Not at liberty

  1203. to detract

  1204. from it.

  1205. Neither are we.

  1206. We're not at liberty

  1207. to say,

  1208. well,

  1209. you might say,

  1210. well,

  1211. this is a rather

  1212. strong message.

1213. This is a bit hard.

  1214. This might make people

  1215. feel uncomfortable.

1216. I'd better water it down

  1217. a bit.

  1218. We're not at liberty

  1219. to do that.

  1220. This is God's word.

  1221. This is God's message.

1222. And it has to be,

  1223. it's a message

1224. that has to be delivered

  1225. faithfully

  1226. and honorably.

  1227. Some people want

  1228. a kind of a pick-and-mix Bible.

  1229. I'll take this bit

  1230. and this bit,

  1231. but oh,

  1232. that's too harsh.

  1233. I'm not having anything

  1234. to do with that.

  1235. No.

1236. We've got to be honest

  1237. and faithful

  1238. with everything.

  1239. But you'll also notice

  1240. what it says.

  1241. We appeal.

  1242. God is making

  1243. his appeal through us.

  1244. We implore you

  1245. on behalf of Christ

  1246. to be reconciled

  1247. to God.

  1248. Implore.

  1249. When we're preaching

  1250. or when we're witnessing,

  1251. it's not just sort of a,

  1252. well,

  1253. it's not a lecture.

  1254. It's not a,

  1255. well,

  1256. here it is,

1257. I'm going to tell you

  1258. a few things.

  1259. This is serious stuff.

  1260. We're dealing with

  1261. the most important thing

  1262. in our life,

  1263. our soul,

  1264. our future,

  1265. our destiny.

  1266. And that is why,

  1267. you see,

  1268. the Lord is,

  1269. you can almost see

  1270. a desperation

  1271. in the Lord

1272. that the word of God

  1273. will go out

1274. and that people will hear.

  1275. Because it's only here

  1276. in this world

  1277. that this message

  1278. is proclaimed,

  1279. not proclaimed in heaven.

  1280. Everybody in heaven

  1281. has heard the message

  1282. and responded to it.

  1283. It's not proclaimed

  1284. in hell

  1285. because the day

  1286. of the good news

  1287. is over,

  1288. the day of opportunity

  1289. is gone.

  1290. Sadly,

  1291. there will be many

  1292. in hell

  1293. who heard the message

  1294. and they will,

  1295. throughout an endless

  1296. eternity,

  1297. wish that they

  1298. responded to it.

  1299. But it's too late.

  1300. It's a fearful thought.

  1301. And so there is

  1302. this urgency

  1303. about it all.

  1304. And in fact,

  1305. further back,

  1306. Paul says,

  1307. we have to

  1308. implore people

  1309. on behalf of Christ.

  1310. Why?

  1311. Because,

  1312. verse 10,

  1313. for we must all

  1314. appear before

  1315. the judgment seat

  1316. of Christ

  1317. so that each one

  1318. may receive

  1319. what is due

1320. for what he has done

  1321. in the body,

  1322. whether good or evil.

  1323. Now,

  1324. there's a lot of,

  1325. there's a lot in that.

  1326. But there's one thing

1327. I'm just going to say

  1328. just now.

  1329. We've got to remember

  1330. that sitting on

  1331. the great white throne

  1332. will be

  1333. the Son of God,

  1334. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1335. in all his majesty

  1336. and in his glory.

  1337. And I'll have to,

  1338. tonight,

1339. I will have to stand there

  1340. and answer

  1341. for tonight.

  1342. Was I faithful?

1343. Was I in any way

  1344. seeking my own honour

  1345. or own glory?

  1346. Was I absolutely faithful

  1347. to the message

  1348. that was given?

1349. You will have to give

  1350. an account

1351. for what you did with it.

  1352. Did you accept

  1353. or did you reject?

  1354. And if you reject,

  1355. you're telling Jesus,

  1356. the one who tonight

  1357. is offering you

  1358. himself,

1359. I chose to reject you.

  1360. Well,

  1361. it's solemn

  1362. because if you reject

  1363. Jesus,

  1364. what's the outcome?

  1365. He rejects you.

  1366. depart

  1367. from me.

  1368. Imagine these,

  1369. the final words

  1370. ever hearing

  1371. from Christ.

  1372. Depart

  1373. from me.

  1374. And so it's important

  1375. that you respond

  1376. to this message

  1377. because all the doing

  1378. has been done.

  1379. The reconciliation

  1380. has taken place.

  1381. God

  1382. initiated,

  1383. Christ

  1384. did it,

  1385. and it's there

  1386. ready for you

  1387. tonight.

1388. All you have to do

  1389. is ask him

  1390. into your life

  1391. to accept him

  1392. and to believe.

  1393. It's as simple

  1394. as that.

  1395. And the moment

  1396. you do,

  1397. you become

  1398. a new creation

  1399. where you're able

  1400. to see

  1401. and to believe

  1402. and understand

  1403. in a way

  1404. that you never

  1405. did before.

  1406. Let us pray.

  1407. Lord our God,

1408. we pray to bless us.

  1409. We give thanks

  1410. for this message

  1411. that we have,

  1412. a message

  1413. that is often

  1414. weighty,

  1415. a message

  1416. that is wonderful.

  1417. And we pray

  1418. that we may

  1419. respond to it

  1420. in a right way.

  1421. Our days

  1422. are short.

  1423. One day

  1424. our time

  1425. of opportunity

  1426. will be no more.

  1427. Lord,

1428. and it won't be long

  1429. until all of us

  1430. will be standing

  1431. before that

  1432. great white throne.

  1433. Oh Lord,

  1434. have mercy upon us.

  1435. Take us all

  1436. to our homes safely.

  1437. Pray to bless

  1438. this congregation.

  1439. We pray your blessing

  1440. on Calamurdo

  1441. and Joanne

  1442. and family

  1443. at this time

  1444. of a wee break

  1445. for them.

  1446. May they have

  1447. recharging

  1448. and renewing

  1449. in themselves.

  1450. We pray for Colin

  1451. the Inter Moderator,

  1452. ask your blessing

  1453. upon him as well.

  1454. And pray, Lord,

1455. that you will direct us

  1456. and lead us

  1457. as a congregation,

  1458. lead us forward

  1459. in the right way.

  1460. As the psalmist said,

  1461. show me thy ways,

  1462. O Lord.

  1463. We pray that that

  1464. might be

  1465. our prayer collectively.

  1466. Show us

  1467. your ways,

  1468. O Lord.

  1469. Take away from us

  1470. our sin,

  1471. in Jesus' name.

  1472. Amen.

  1473. We're going to

  1474. conclude singing

  1475. in Psalm 126.

  1476. And this is

  1477. in Sing Psalm,

  1478. Psalm 126.

  1479. I'm going to sing

  1480. the whole psalm.

  1481. And the tune is

  1482. Denfield.

  1483. And there we have

  1484. a picture of

  1485. going out

  1486. mourning,

  1487. going out with tears

  1488. of grief,

  1489. bearing the seed,

  1490. sowing the seed,

  1491. because sowing the seed

  1492. can be hard.

  1493. But there's a great

  1494. encouragement

  1495. coming back

  1496. with songs of joy

  1497. bearing harvest sheaf.

  1498. Psalm 126.

  1499. When Zion's fortunes

  1500. God restored,

  1501. it was a dream

  1502. come true.

  1503. Our mouths

  1504. were then

  1505. with laughter

  1506. filled,

  1507. our tongues

  1508. with songs

  1509. anew.

  1510. The nation said,

  1511. the Lord has done

  1512. great things

  1513. for Israel.

  1514. The Lord did

  1515. mighty things

  1516. for us.

  1517. Enjoy our hearts

  1518. new will.

  1519. Restore our fortunes,

  1520. gracious Lord,

  1521. like streams

  1522. in desert soil.

  1523. A joyful harvest

  1524. will reward

  1525. the weeping

  1526. sower's toil.

  1527. 1, 2, 6,

  1528. a whole psalm

  1529. to the tune

  1530. Denfield.

  1531. Amen.

  1532. When Zion's fortunes

  1533. God restored,

  1534. it was a dream

  1535. come true.

  1536. Our mouths

  1537. were then

  1538. with laughter

  1539. filled,

  1540. our tongues

  1541. with songs

  1542. anew.

  1543. The nations

  1544. say,

  1545. the Lord

  1546. has done

  1547. great things

  1548. for Israel.

  1549. the Lord

  1550. in mighty

  1551. things

  1552. for us

  1553. and joy

  1554. and hearts

  1555. new will.

  1556. Restore our fortunes,

  1557. gracious Lord,

  1558. like streams

  1559. in desert soil.

  1560. A joyful harvest

  1561. will reward

  1562. the weeping

  1563. sower's toil.

  1564. singing,

  1565. singing,

  1566. singing,

  1567. Let your heavenly singing,

1568. grace, mercy, and peace of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit rest and abide upon each one of you

1569. now and forevermore. Amen. I'll go to the door on my right.

  1570. Amen.
