  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise in Psalm 63.

  2. ! In the Scottish Psalter verse in Psalm 63, we're going to sing from verse 1 down to verse 8.

  3. ! The tune is Jackson.

  4. Lord, thee my God I'll early seek, my soul doth thirst for thee, my flesh longs in a dry parched

  5. land wherein no waters be. Psalm 63, page 295, we stand to sing to God's praise.

  6. Lord, thee my God I'll early seek, my soul doth thirst for thee, my flesh longs in a dry

  7. large land wherein no waters be.

  8. Psalm 63, page 295, verse 1.

  9. As I thy power may be whole, and brightness of thy face, as I have seen thee clear to

  10. forth within thy holy face.

  11. Psalm 63, page 295, verse 1.

  12. Since Bethany's time of the light, my lips be patient near.

  13. Psalm 63, page 295, verse 1.

  14. Psalm 63, page 295, verse 1.

  15. Psalm 63, page 295, verse 1.

  16. Even as with marrow and with fat my soul shall fill it thee,

  17. then shall my blood with joyfulness sing graces unto thee.

  18. When I do thee upon my bed, remember with delight,

  19. and when on thee I meditate in watches of the night.

  20. Then shadow of thy wings I'll join, for thou my wealth must be.

  21. My soul re-follows far than me, thy light hand doth sustain.

  22. Amen.

  23. Amen.

  24. Amen.

  25. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer. Let us pray.

  26. Our gracious Father in heaven, we come in your name this evening,

  27. thankful for an opportunity again this day to gather in worship.

  28. Thankful for your word to us.

  29. Thankful to be able to sing your praises as we come.

  30. With these words on our lips just now, that we would come with that longing, that desire,

  31. coming into your presence, longing like the dry parched land, to meet with you as our true and living God.

  32. That we would know, Lord, the power of your name in our midst this evening.

  33. For we know that if we are just gathered here by ourselves, if we just come as the people that we are,

  34. just seeking to talk with one another, to say words that maybe just come from our own lips.

  35. We know that in ourselves there is no good, and in us there is no power.

  36. But we thank you that as we come, we come in the knowledge and assurance that when we gather in your name,

  37. that you are in the midst to bless.

  38. And that is what we seek in you this evening, to know your presence with us,

  39. to know in the quietness of our hearts your voice speaking to us,

  40. ministering to us in every need that we have,

  41. ministering to us, Lord, knowing that you have every concern and care that we carry,

  42. sometimes we feel by ourselves that you already know them.

  43. And so that we are not alone, even if we are sitting by ourselves in a pew,

  44. even if no one has said a word to us, even as we have come in.

  45. We thank you, Lord, that your voice is there to speak to us.

  46. And that through it, Lord, we know that you are God and there is no other.

  47. And so we come, Lord, yes, to meet together and fellowship with one another.

  48. But we come especially to meet with you as the living God.

  49. And so, Lord, be pleased to come. Be pleased to be with us, Lord.

  50. Be pleased to hear our prayers, even at this time, and to hear us and encourage us in our hearts as we offer up our praise to you.

  51. And as we read your word and as we share from it, Lord, that your spirit would help us to understand and to hear what God the Lord is saying.

  52. And we do thank you, Lord, that we come with that prayerful spirit, that even as we are gathered here just now,

  53. that it is not just one voice praying, but many, and many in their hearts.

  54. And so, Lord, even quietly just pleading with you and praying to you for so many different things, personal things, very private things to ourselves, perhaps,

  55. but also for our congregation, for our people here, even those who are at home, Lord, tuning in in their own quietness of prayer just now as well,

  56. that we can offer that up together as the fellowship of your people, and that we can come, Lord, with the prayers for all around us as well,

  57. praying for those who would say to us quite naturally that they want no prayer from us, that they want nothing to do with us.

  58. But yet we thank you, Lord, that we can come praying for them, praying for them just as we were, in ignorance and darkness,

  59. and yet praying, Lord, for your light to shine into their hearts, shine the beauty of Christ towards them,

  60. that they might be overwhelmed and overcome by the sense of God and the sense of your power all around us.

  61. For we see it in so many ways. We see it in the creation, in all the wonder of it,

  62. whether it's the beauty of sunny days or even the clouds that come with the rain, the clouds that water the ground and give growth.

  63. We see that just now, Lord, as we see plants and trees and grass begin to flourish.

  64. We see new life in the fields around us. We see a freshness in it in so many different ways.

  65. We thank you, Lord, for every season that you give and give with a purpose, whether it's winter, spring, summer or autumn.

  66. We thank you, Lord, that each of them have a purpose in our life and in our years.

  67. We thank you, Lord, that you have ordained all, that you have created it by your power, through your word and for your glory.

  68. And we pray, Lord, that you would help the world in which we live to know that you are its God, its maker.

  69. For when we see how much we've turned away and how much we've rejected you,

  70. how much we see it in our day, Lord, as we thought of this morning,

  71. and yet thankful that your voice goes out, thankful that you still call people to you,

  72. to all ends of the earth, that you have the word preached in every nation, through every tongue, to every tribe.

  73. And yet we know, Lord, that still your word reaches out to people who have not heard it yet.

  74. But we thank you that it never returns empty or void.

  75. And so we pray that that word gone out today would be blessed by you and accomplish great things for you.

  76. And we pray that for this evening hour as well, that you would help us to be still before you,

  77. to know you with us, and to hear our prayers, Lord.

  78. And we do pray for our people here, Lord, thankful for everyone, thankful for your goodness to us,

  79. thankful as we look ahead to the week before us, Lord, that you are with us in it, that you go before us,

  80. that every plan and purpose that we seek to put into place, they're all ordained by you and given blessing by you.

  81. We do pray, Lord, that you will be pleased to meet with us in the week ahead,

  82. when we think of all the different things going on, whether it's groups meeting in the hall or prayer meetings going on,

  83. whatever is taking place, Lord, that you would be pleased to bless.

  84. We think of the WFM, thankful again for them and pray for the meeting tomorrow evening.

  85. We commit the prayer meetings during the week to you as well in Laxdale, here in the hall and in the seminary on Thursday,

  86. Lord, thankful for these opportunities that we have to call upon the name of the Lord together,

  87. to share from your word, to encourage one another and to meet with one another.

  88. We pray, Lord, for the opportunities we have to reach out to our community as well,

  89. to invite people through our doors, whether it's to these services during the week,

  90. to our services on the Lord's Day or to the Friday, the free, the over 55,

  91. so the youth groups, the toddler groups, Lord, we thank you for all of these endeavours

  92. and just pray to see your spirit working in them.

  93. Thankful for every encouragement that you give us, Lord,

  94. and thankful for all who come through our doors and the connections that that builds,

  95. connections that we see growing and developing in different ways

  96. and connections that help us, Lord, to be alongside people in times of need as well.

  97. And so remember those in need at this time.

  98. Remember those who are unwell, some seriously unwell, Lord.

  99. We pray that you will surround them and uphold them and bless them.

  100. We ask, O Lord, that in every tear that's shed or every prayer that's offered,

  101. that you will hear and be near to all who need you in these ways.

  102. Remember, too, Lord, those who grieve and mourn.

  103. We pray that you will comfort us as only you can.

  104. For we thank you that in the midst of mourning,

  105. we thank you that there are times when we know just the peace of God,

  106. that peace that passes understanding.

  107. For when we know the Lord and when we know those who are being called by him home

  108. have trusted in you,

  109. we thank you for the comfort and the peace that that gives.

  110. And we pray, Lord, that those who mourn will continue to know that for themselves.

  111. We pray for our nation as a whole as well, Lord.

  112. We thank you for the wider church.

  113. We thank you for every place that meets in your name today

  114. that proclaims the name of Jesus Christ as Lord

  115. and that calls sinners to repentance.

  116. We pray that you would be pleased to build your church throughout our land

  117. and that in the midst of our nation and all that we're going through at this time

  118. when there's so much confusion and turmoil,

  119. so much anxiety and fear,

  120. Lord, may you hear our prayers.

  121. We pray for leaders,

  122. whether it's our prime minister, our first minister,

  123. our royal family, our governments,

  124. whoever it might be, Lord,

  125. in positions of authority and power,

  126. we ask for your blessing,

  127. your mercy upon them,

  128. to be able to know your goodness

  129. and to be able to know your name as a name that's to be called upon,

  130. a name that's the foundation of our nation and this world,

  131. the cornerstone that is Jesus Christ.

  132. We pray that his name would be praised in the corridors of power

  133. and throughout all our land and to the ends of the earth.

  134. So we think, oh, nations in conflict

  135. and nations with so many different needs,

  136. persecution and famine and drought

  137. and so many atrocities going on

  138. and so many nations around the world

  139. where your people are being put to the sword

  140. in so many different ways.

  141. We ask, oh, Lord, for mercy and grace

  142. in the midst of all of these things.

  143. We do pray, Lord, that you will just hear us now

  144. and continue with us as we worship you,

  145. as we sing your praise

  146. and as we seek your presence.

  147. Lord, may you be pleased to bless all that we do

  148. and we ask all acknowledging our sin before you

  149. and you seeking pardon for all things,

  150. whether it's what we have forgotten to do

  151. or what we shouldn't do at all.

  152. Lord, we pray that you would have mercy upon us

  153. and hear us as we pray in the name of Jesus,

  154. asking all things for his sake and his glory.

  155. Amen.

  156. We'll again sing to Psalm 44.

  157. We'll sing from verse 1 down to verse 8.

  158. Psalm 44, verse 1 to verse 8.

    Psalms 44:1

  159. O God, we without ears have heard,

  160. our fathers told us so,

  161. what you accomplished in their days,

  162. in days of long ago.

  163. We'll sing from verse 1 to 8 to God's praise.

  164. Psalm 44, verse 1 to 9.

    Psalms 44:1–9

  165. Psalm 44, verse 1 to 9.

    Psalms 44:1–9

  166. Psalm 44, verse 1 to 9.

    Psalms 44:1–9

  167. Psalm 44, verse 1 to 9.

    Psalms 44:1–9

  168. We're going to read together in the New Testament

  169. in Paul's letter to the Colossians.

  170. Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  171. And we read from the beginning of the chapter down to verse 23.

  172. Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  173. Find it around page 1182 of the church Bibles thereabouts.

  174. Paul, we begin our reading of the church Bibles thereabouts.

  175. We begin our reading at verse 1.

  176. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,

  177. and Timothy our brother,

  178. to the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae,

  179. grace to you and peace from God our Father.

  180. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  181. since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus,

  182. and of the love that you have for all the saints,

  183. because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.

  184. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth,

  185. the gospel which has come to you,

  186. as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing,

  187. as it also does among you since the day you heard it

  188. and understood the grace of God in truth.

  189. Just as you learned it from Epaphras,

  190. our beloved fellow servant,

  191. he is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf,

  192. and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

  193. And so from the day we heard,

  194. we have not ceased to pray for you,

  195. asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will

  196. in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,

  197. so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord,

  198. fully pleasing to him,

  199. bearing fruit in every good work

  200. and increasing in the knowledge of God.

  201. May you be strengthened with all power,

  202. according to his glorious might,

  203. for all endurance and patience,

  204. with joy, giving thanks to the Father

  205. who has qualified you to share

  206. in the inheritance of the saints in light.

  207. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness

  208. and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,

  209. in whom we are redemption,

  210. the forgiveness of sins.

  211. He is the image of the invisible God,

  212. the firstborn of all creation.

  213. For by him all things were created,

  214. in heaven and on earth,

  215. visible and invisible,

  216. whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

  217. All things were created through him and for him.

  218. And he is before all things.

  219. And in him all things hold together.

  220. And he is the head of the body,

  221. the church.

  222. He is the beginning,

  223. the firstborn from the dead,

  224. that in everything he might be preeminent.

  225. For in him all the fullness of God

  226. was pleased to dwell,

  227. and through him to reconcile to himself all things,

  228. whether on earth or in heaven,

  229. making peace by the blood of his cross.

  230. And you who once were alienated and hostile in mind,

  231. doing evil deeds,

  232. he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death,

  233. in order to present you holy and blameless

  234. and above reproach before him.

  235. If indeed you continue in the faith,

  236. stable and steadfast,

  237. not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard,

  238. which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven,

  239. and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

  240. And so on.

  241. And may God bless that reading from his word.

  242. And before we come back to this passage,

  243. we're going to sing again to God's praise in Psalm 81.

  244. The Singed Psalms version, Psalm 81,

  245. page 109 of the psalm books.

  246. We're going to sing from verse 8

  247. down to the end of the psalm.

  248. Psalm 81 at verse 8.

  249. Hear, my people, let me warn you,

  250. if you would but listen now.

  251. No strange God shall be among you.

  252. To a false God do not bow.

  253. We'll sing from verse 8 to the end of the psalm,

  254. to the tune Stuttgart we stand to sing.

  255. To a false God do not bow.

  256. I do not do love from Egypt,

  257. your own God, the Lord, and I.

  258. Open wide your mouth towards me,

  259. and your food I will supply.

  260. But my people would not listen,

  261. would not do what I require.

  262. So I gave them up to follow

  263. what their stubborn hearts desire.

  264. If my people would not heed me,

  265. Israel followed my command.

  266. I would soon,

  267. I would soon subdue their enemies,

  268. and against them turn my hand.

  269. For to it the Lord would power,

  270. and their doom would never end.

  271. But with finest we die,

  272. I feed you,

  273. and me from the rock I send.

  274. Amen.

  275. We can turn back to our reading in Colossians.

  276. Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  277. We're going to focus on verse 3 to verse 8

  278. together this evening.

  279. Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  280. We just read at verse 3.

  281. We always thank God,

  282. the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  283. when we pray for you,

  284. since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus,

  285. and of the love that you have for all the saints,

  286. and so on.

  287. As you read through the Bible,

  288. as you go to the different parts,

  289. whether it's the letters,

  290. as we look at Paul's letters here,

  291. or the Gospels,

  292. or even back into the Old Testament,

  293. do you ever think to yourself,

  294. there's a place,

  295. if I had a choice,

  296. if I could do it,

  297. I'd love to go back,

  298. and be in that place at this very time,

  299. and just see what it was like.

  300. Maybe you've had the privilege of visiting

  301. some of these places in your own time,

  302. whether it's the Middle East,

  303. or different parts of Turkey,

  304. as we see Colossae here,

  305. as part of modern day Turkey,

  306. or Rome,

  307. places in Italy.

  308. Maybe you've seen it as it is now,

  309. but as you're there,

  310. you've thought,

  311. I wonder what it was like to be there

  312. in the days that we read of in the scripture.

  313. Well, I'm sure there's some places

  314. that would maybe be up on the top of your list

  315. of places you might want to go to Jerusalem.

  316. It'd be fascinating maybe just to walk up,

  317. as it is,

  318. up to Jerusalem,

  319. as we read of in the Old and New Testament,

  320. as you see just what it would be like

  321. to go back to those days

  322. and walk up with a crowd

  323. making their way up to the festivals

  324. in Jerusalem.

  325. Or to go to Corinth,

  326. a city that was busy and bustling

  327. in so many different ways,

  328. where the gospel had come,

  329. and yet there were so many challenges in it.

  330. Or Rome,

  331. another fascinating place to see,

  332. and it would have been

  333. to see the Colosseum

  334. and all of these different things

  335. in the day

  336. that we read of in the scriptures.

  337. You can't but wonder

  338. what it would be like.

  339. But where would Colosse come

  340. on your list of places to go?

  341. I'm sure it's maybe not up there

  342. in the top places you'd like to see,

  343. but it's interesting to think

  344. of what these places were like at the time,

  345. because it helps us to understand

  346. the way Paul is writing

  347. and the things that are going on.

  348. And that's why we want to just begin

  349. by looking at this evening,

  350. is just to think of Colosseum,

  351. what kind of place it was.

  352. Paul was obviously writing to them,

  353. but it's a place he'd never even been.

  354. And yet the gospel had come to them

  355. and was bearing fruit in their midst.

  356. And Paul is writing to encourage them.

  357. But what kind of place was it?

  358. Well, if you go back

  359. in the history of Colosseum,

  360. the time of Paul's writing to it

  361. was a time when that place

  362. was very much in decline.

  363. It wasn't as vibrant

  364. as it had once been.

  365. And in many ways,

  366. it may sound strange,

  367. but you could almost compare it

  368. to Stornoway.

  369. Colosseum and Stornoway

  370. have things in common.

  371. And what are they, you might ask?

  372. It may not be the weather,

  373. but they've certainly got other things

  374. in common.

  375. Colosseum, when it was founded,

  376. it was founded on industry.

  377. And it was a textile industry

  378. that it was founded on.

  379. It was famous for wool,

  380. and especially purple wool.

  381. And that's what it had thrived on,

  382. that business of textile.

  383. And yet, that was about

  384. three or four hundred years

  385. before Christ came.

  386. But by the time Paul is writing to them,

  387. it's a place that has seen decline.

  388. That vibrant industry

  389. is no longer there.

  390. It's dwindled in many ways.

  391. And people,

  392. as we would see in our own town,

  393. a textile town, if you like,

  394. a place that was vibrant,

  395. has seen a bit of decline.

  396. And you think of many young people

  397. having to go away from here

  398. to the mainland for work

  399. and different things.

  400. Colosse went through that

  401. itself as well.

  402. Places nearby,

  403. Laodicea was a more thriving place

  404. that attracted people away,

  405. that brought work away from Colosse.

  406. They went away to work.

  407. And all of these things were going on

  408. because trade had moved around.

  409. But as Paul is writing to them,

  410. as if he was writing to ourselves today,

  411. these aren't the things

  412. that he's interested in.

  413. What's important to him

  414. is not the economy

  415. or the politics of the place,

  416. but the very fact that

  417. God is in the midst.

  418. That God was there

  419. when the place was thriving and busy.

  420. And that even though

  421. there's a time of decline,

  422. God is still in the midst.

  423. These people are still there.

  424. And so that's why

  425. Paul is writing to them.

  426. And he's writing to them,

  427. even though he's not been there,

  428. he's writing to them

  429. because he's heard about their faith.

  430. Epaphras had come back,

  431. I think from Ephesus it was,

  432. and come back,

  433. shared the gospel with them.

  434. And the gospel had borne fruit

  435. in this place.

  436. And the church was established.

  437. And the people of God

  438. were positive in so many ways.

  439. And yet there were challenges.

  440. There were challenges.

  441. And that's the reality

  442. of the Christian life, isn't it?

  443. When we think of history,

  444. there's always been challenges.

  445. And when we think of our own day today,

  446. even our own town today,

  447. as we look around,

  448. we see vibrancy that was there once,

  449. decline that's there now.

  450. Even in the church,

  451. we see it's so different

  452. to what it once was,

  453. but yet still with the hope

  454. of God in our midst.

  455. And so Paul,

  456. as he's writing to them,

  457. he's writing to encourage,

  458. even though he's in prison,

  459. even though he doesn't know

  460. what the future holds for him,

  461. he's writing to encourage them

  462. because they have something

  463. in common together,

  464. the gospel.

  465. The gospel is in his heart,

  466. it's in their hearts.

  467. It's in the place of Colossae

  468. as it is in Paul's prison cell

  469. as he writes.

  470. We often speak about people

  471. that can be in two different ways

  472. described.

  473. One person can be described

  474. as a glass half empty person.

  475. Somebody else can be described

  476. as the glass half full person.

  477. And we can know ourselves

  478. where we maybe fall into that.

  479. We know the glass half empty

  480. is things are looked at

  481. a little bit more negatively.

  482. The glass half full,

  483. it's got a more positive outlook.

  484. But Paul wasn't either of these.

  485. He wasn't just half full glass.

  486. He was the fullness

  487. of the glass entirely

  488. to overflowing.

  489. And that's what he was seeking

  490. to encourage the church,

  491. whatever it was to be like.

  492. To be a people who knew

  493. God is with us.

  494. Therefore, we don't have to look

  495. at things glass half empty

  496. negatively and think,

  497. well, God can't do.

  498. Or just to be just half full

  499. where we're looking more positively,

  500. but still only halfway.

  501. But to be overflowing.

  502. To be overflowing with that hope

  503. that God is with us.

  504. And that's what we want to think

  505. about this evening.

  506. It's this fullness

  507. that Paul speaks of here.

  508. And when we think of the word full,

  509. it can be looked at both positively

  510. and negatively as well.

  511. It can be looked at

  512. being full of the joys.

  513. We can see that,

  514. but we can also be full of sorrow.

  515. Or we can think of it

  516. full of love

  517. in a positive sense

  518. or full of hate

  519. in a negative sense.

  520. There's this fullness in life.

  521. It's an overwhelming experience,

  522. whether it's in a positive way

  523. or a negative way.

  524. But when the Lord Jesus

  525. is in our hearts,

  526. we have that fullness

  527. that goes beyond anything else.

  528. An abundance of good things.

  529. An abundance that the psalmist

  530. speaks of in Psalm 23,

  531. when he speaks of

  532. the table being set

  533. in the presence of an enemy.

  534. And yet even so,

  535. what does he say?

  536. And yet my cup overflows.

  537. My head, he does anoint.

  538. And my cup overflows.

  539. What springs up from the hope

  540. that we have in the gospel,

  541. it speaks of here

  542. in verse 5

  543. of the hope of the gospel,

  544. this foundation

  545. that's laid up in heaven for us,

  546. that we have heard

  547. the word of truth,

  548. the gospel.

  549. That's what helps us

  550. to remain full

  551. and to have that focus

  552. on the fullness of Christ

  553. that you see running

  554. throughout this first chapter

  555. as you read

  556. the preeminence of Christ.

  557. There's so much imagery

  558. there for us

  559. as Paul writes to them.

  560. He is the image

  561. of the invisible God,

  562. the firstborn

  563. of all creation

  564. for by him

  565. and all things were created.

  566. This richness here of Christ,

  567. and that's the fullness

  568. that he's speaking of

  569. in these verses as well,

  570. verse 3 to verse 8.

  571. So there's three fullnesses

  572. that we want to know.

  573. That's a word, fullness.

  574. The fullnesses

  575. that we want to speak of,

  576. thankful, boastful, and faithful.

  577. And that's the fullness

  578. that we see in these verses,

  579. verse 3 to verse 8.

  580. So we think first of all

  581. of thankful.

  582. Being thankful.

  583. And you see that in verse 3.

  584. We always thank God,

  585. the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  586. when we pray for you.

  587. It's rich in thanksgiving.

  588. Not just this verse,

  589. but really throughout the letter

  590. there's so much thanksgiving

  591. that Paul gives for them.

  592. Imagine, or maybe you've had this,

  593. you've had work done

  594. in your house.

  595. Perhaps it's been a major work

  596. that's been done,

  597. a whole rewiring of the house

  598. or a whole new heating system

  599. put into the house.

  600. There's always a little anxiety

  601. that comes with it.

  602. The old is taken out

  603. and the new is put in,

  604. and you're wondering,

  605. will it work?

  606. Will it be efficient?

  607. Will it be as good

  608. as they say it will be?

  609. And I'm sure

  610. if you've had it done,

  611. there'll be others

  612. who will come and say,

  613. oh, you should have done it this way.

  614. You should have gone with that instead.

  615. There'll be all of these

  616. different opinions

  617. coming in.

  618. When does it get to the point

  619. where you know

  620. that it's working?

  621. Only when it's up

  622. and running

  623. and put to the test.

  624. Checking,

  625. double checking,

  626. making sure that

  627. everything's working all right.

  628. And then you get to the point

  629. where you have peace of mind

  630. because you know

  631. it's all working.

  632. Well, the church at Colossae

  633. had gone through a renovation.

  634. It had gone from having no faith

  635. to being a people

  636. who were in darkness

  637. to being a people

  638. who were in light.

  639. A people who had heard the gospel

  640. and they were transformed

  641. by the gospel.

  642. But remembering the kind of place it was,

  643. a place that wasn't as vibrant

  644. as it once used to be,

  645. a place that was in decline,

  646. it was also a place

  647. that hadn't totally abandoned

  648. other religions.

  649. And so those who had been converted

  650. by the gospel

  651. who had come to faith

  652. they faced many challenges.

  653. And the biggest challenge of all

  654. was people saying,

  655. you may have that gospel

  656. but that's not enough.

  657. You need more.

  658. You need more than just that gospel

  659. of Jesus Christ.

  660. You need to bring other things in.

  661. And there's so many different opinions

  662. that are being offered to them.

  663. And so Paul is writing

  664. with this sense of

  665. thanking God,

  666. the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  667. that he is with them.

  668. That he is in their midst.

  669. That through their relationship

  670. that they have in Christ,

  671. that they have

  672. the fullness of Jesus,

  673. the fullness of Christ

  674. in their hearts.

  675. And there is nothing else

  676. that they need.

  677. There is nothing else

  678. that is going to make

  679. a difference to them.

  680. And this is what is so

  681. in giving thanks

  682. to Paul himself

  683. and that he's encouraging them

  684. in their thankfulness

  685. with a swell.

  686. So in the midst

  687. of all the problems

  688. and Paul could have

  689. come down hard on them

  690. in the fact that

  691. they were being swayed

  692. away from the gospel,

  693. but instead he comes

  694. alongside

  695. to encourage them

  696. and to give thanks

  697. for them.

  698. We always thank God,

  699. the Father of our Lord Jesus,

  700. when we pray

  701. for you.

  702. There is this bond.

  703. There is this relationship.

  704. And that's a challenge

  705. to ourselves today as well.

  706. As we think of our own sense

  707. of thankfulness,

  708. are we glass half empty

  709. or glass half full?

  710. Or are we overflowing

  711. with thankfulness?

  712. Do we look at things

  713. with that negative sense?

  714. We have those days,

  715. we have those times,

  716. but do we look around

  717. and give thanks

  718. that God is working,

  719. that God is with us?

  720. Is that our attitude

  721. that we are always

  722. full of thanksgiving

  723. to God

  724. and what he is doing

  725. in our midst,

  726. in our congregation,

  727. in our friends,

  728. in our families,

  729. in our denomination?

  730. Do we have that sense

  731. of thanksgiving,

  732. that sense of thankfulness?

  733. Even as we think

  734. of joining together

  735. on Wednesday evening,

  736. a time of thanksgiving

  737. for God's goodness

  738. to our denomination

  739. over these last number

  740. of years,

  741. there's been reasons

  742. for encouragement.

  743. Yes,

  744. we can look at things

  745. and think,

  746. it's not what we would want,

  747. we can look at it

  748. in a negative sense,

  749. but let's come together

  750. in thanksgiving

  751. that God is with us,

  752. that God hears

  753. his praying people

  754. and God is able

  755. to answer

  756. his praying people.

  757. If we see what Christ

  758. has done for us,

  759. and that's what Paul

  760. goes on to describe

  761. so wonderfully here

  762. in this chapter,

  763. how he has

  764. his beloved son,

  765. as he says in verse 14,

  766. in whom we have

  767. the forgiveness of sins,

  768. if we see what we have

  769. in Christ,

  770. if we see what we have

  771. in him,

  772. there is reason

  773. for thanksgiving.

  774. Otherwise,

  775. we just miss out

  776. on so much.

  777. I was reading

  778. a sad story

  779. about a sportsman

  780. just the other day

  781. who had made millions

  782. during a sporting career,

  783. a short career,

  784. being a footballer it was.

  785. He had got on

  786. so well,

  787. he had earned

  788. so much money,

  789. and during

  790. those great days

  791. when he was making

  792. so much,

  793. he had helped

  794. so many people,

  795. being so generous

  796. to them,

  797. family,

  798. friends,

  799. even strangers.

  800. He had helped

  801. out so many people.

  802. However,

  803. over the years,

  804. addiction

  805. took a hold

  806. of him.

  807. Gambling addiction,

  808. and then drinking,

  809. and all his money

  810. was gone.

  811. He hit rock bottom.

  812. He lost

  813. everything.

  814. And some people

  815. would say

  816. it's his own fault.

  817. And that's the way

  818. many people

  819. looked at him.

  820. But one of the saddest

  821. things he said

  822. was,

  823. of all the people

  824. that I helped

  825. when I had plenty,

  826. not one of them

  827. was there

  828. when I was in need.

  829. Not one of them

  830. came back

  831. with a sense

  832. of thanksgiving

  833. to him

  834. that he had helped

  835. them in their time

  836. of need.

  837. No one.

  838. No one came.

  839. And that's

  840. a challenge

  841. to us

  842. as we think

  843. of our own

  844. thanksgiving

  845. as well.

  846. Are we

  847. thanking the Lord

  848. for all that

  849. he has done

  850. for us?

  851. Are we

  852. thanking the Lord

  853. for his goodness

  854. and mercies

  855. new each day?

  856. Or are we

  857. choosing

  858. to ignore

  859. his goodness

  860. to us

  861. and therefore

  862. in that

  863. ignore others

  864. in their need

  865. as well?

  866. Coming to faith

  867. is not the

  868. end of our

  869. journey

  870. and that's

  871. what Paul

  872. is so encouraging

  873. with here.

  874. He's encouraging

  875. them to grow

  876. in their faith.

  877. They have

  878. learned the

  879. gospel as we

  880. see in verse

  881. 7 there

  882. just as you

  883. learned from

  884. Epaphras,

  885. our beloved

  886. fellow servant.

  887. They learned

  888. the gospel

  889. from him.

  890. And then in

  891. verse 10

  892. to walk in a

  893. manner worthy

  894. of the Lord

  895. fully pleasing

  896. in him

  897. bearing fruit

  898. in every good

  899. work

  900. and increasing

  901. in the

  902. knowledge of

  903. God.

  904. It's about

  905. going on.

  906. And

  907. thanksgiving

  908. is what

  909. helps us

  910. to go on.

  911. I think it was

  912. one of the

  913. old Puritans

  914. that had said

  915. the thankful

  916. heart has a

  917. continual

  918. feast.

  919. The thankful

  920. heart is a

  921. continual

  922. feast.

  923. In other

  924. words the

  925. more we are

  926. in thanksgiving

  927. to God

  928. the more we

  929. are thankful

  930. to him

  931. the more

  932. we are feasting

  933. on his

  934. goodness

  935. to us.

  936. So the

  937. first thing

  938. we see here

  939. is Paul

  940. is this

  941. thankfulness.

  942. The second

  943. thing we see

  944. is to be

  945. boastful.

  946. To be

  947. boastful.

  948. And this

  949. immediately

  950. thinks

  951. surely that's

  952. a negative.

  953. Surely that's

  954. a negative

  955. to be boasting

  956. in anything.

  957. Because boasting

  958. is often seen

  959. as something

  960. that's not

  961. good to do.

  962. And we can

  963. think of people

  964. who are boastful

  965. in so many

  966. arrogant ways.

  967. Think of

  968. these people

  969. who boast

  970. in their

  971. riches or

  972. boast in

  973. what they've

  974. done in

  975. life.

  976. They're boasting

  977. in themselves

  978. in so many

  979. ways.

  980. It can be

  981. irritating.

  982. And that's

  983. not the kind

  984. of boasting

  985. that we want.

  986. But what

  987. Paul is

  988. boasting

  989. in is about

  990. something

  991. that for the

  992. people of

  993. God in

  994. Colossae

  995. would not

  996. irritate

  997. them at

  998. all.

  999. But really

  1000. encourage

  1001. them.

  1002. That's

  1003. what we

  1004. see in

  1005. verse 6.

  1006. Paul is

  1007. full of

  1008. thanksgiving

  1009. but then

  1010. there's

  1011. this

  1012. thanksgiving

  1013. because of

  1014. the hope

  1015. laid up

  1016. in heaven

  1017. in verse

  1018. 5.

  1019. Of this

  1020. you have

  1021. heard

  1022. before

  1023. the word

  1024. of truth

  1025. the gospel

  1026. which has

  1027. come to

  1028. you as

  1029. indeed

  1030. in the

  1031. whole

  1032. world

  1033. it is

  1034. bearing

  1035. fruit

  1036. and

  1037. growing.

  1038. What is

  1039. he boasting

  1040. in?

  1041. He is

  1042. boasting

  1043. in the

  1044. power of

  1045. God.

  1046. That the

  1047. gospel

  1048. is

  1049. bearing

  1050. fruit

  1051. not

  1052. just

  1053. in

  1054. them

  1055. but

  1056. in

  1057. the

  1058. whole

  1059. world.

  1060. And you

  1061. can imagine

  1062. what it would

  1063. be like

  1064. for the

  1065. people of

  1066. Colossae.

  1067. They would

  1068. have been

  1069. thinking about

  1070. other places

  1071. maybe like

  1072. Laodicea

  1073. or Ephesus

  1074. where

  1075. Epaphras

  1076. had come

  1077. from

  1078. and hearing

  1079. these great

  1080. things that

  1081. were happening

  1082. Paul has

  1083. been there

  1084. but he

  1085. hasn't come

  1086. to us.

  1087. Or these

  1088. places that

  1089. there's so

  1090. many more

  1091. people in

  1092. them.

  1093. So many

  1094. more things

  1095. going on

  1096. and yet

  1097. Paul is

  1098. here coming

  1099. to them.

  1100. Maybe they

  1101. are feeling

  1102. discouraged

  1103. to remember

  1104. what you

  1105. have in

  1106. your midst.

  1107. You have

  1108. that same

  1109. gospel that

  1110. is bearing

  1111. fruit in

  1112. the whole

  1113. world and

  1114. you have

  1115. it here in

  1116. your midst.

  1117. And that

  1118. is something

  1119. to be

  1120. boastful

  1121. in.

  1122. To

  1123. rejoice

  1124. in.

  1125. And they

  1126. could have

  1127. easily just

  1128. focused on

  1129. themselves and

  1130. become so

  1131. insular in

  1132. so many

  1133. ways and

  1134. just have

  1135. no thought

  1136. for anybody

  1137. else.

  1138. It's always a

  1139. danger when

  1140. you're feeling

  1141. discouraged or

  1142. glass half

  1143. empty that

  1144. we just

  1145. focus inwardly.

  1146. Let's just

  1147. look after

  1148. ourselves.

  1149. but what

  1150. Paul is

  1151. doing here

  1152. in

  1153. thanksgiving

  1154. and then

  1155. coming with

  1156. his boastful

  1157. side as

  1158. well,

  1159. remember

  1160. God is

  1161. working in

  1162. your midst.

  1163. And we

  1164. live in a

  1165. place, a

  1166. location and

  1167. even a

  1168. culture where

  1169. family is

  1170. important,

  1171. where friendship

  1172. is important

  1173. and very

  1174. strong and

  1175. is a great

  1176. thing.

  1177. But it

  1178. can also be

  1179. a barrier,

  1180. a barrier

  1181. to going

  1182. beyond

  1183. ourselves

  1184. and to

  1185. loving

  1186. others.

  1187. We can

  1188. be so

  1189. comfortable

  1190. loving our

  1191. own family,

  1192. loving our

  1193. own friends,

  1194. loving the

  1195. people that

  1196. we've grown

  1197. up with or

  1198. gone to

  1199. school with

  1200. or work

  1201. with.

  1202. We can

  1203. be so

  1204. comfortable

  1205. in these

  1206. things and

  1207. forget

  1208. others.

  1209. Those who

  1210. come through

  1211. our doors,

  1212. who we

  1213. don't

  1214. recognize or

  1215. are different

  1216. to us,

  1217. or those

  1218. who don't

  1219. even darken

  1220. our doors

  1221. at all.

  1222. We think

  1223. that we

  1224. have nothing

  1225. in common,

  1226. that we

  1227. have nothing

  1228. to say.

  1229. And yet

  1230. the gospel

  1231. is what

  1232. they need.

  1233. And Paul

  1234. in many ways

  1235. is reminding

  1236. the church

  1237. at Colossae

  1238. of what

  1239. they have

  1240. in their

  1241. midst.

  1242. The gospel

  1243. that has

  1244. come to

  1245. you as

  1246. indeed in

  1247. the whole

  1248. world,

  1249. it is

  1250. bearing fruit

  1251. and growing

  1252. as it

  1253. also does

  1254. among you.

  1255. He's saying

  1256. to them,

  1257. you are not

  1258. alone.

  1259. That I

  1260. have people

  1261. everywhere,

  1262. all over

  1263. the world,

  1264. who are your

  1265. brothers and

  1266. sisters in

  1267. Christ.

  1268. We can

  1269. boast in

  1270. this, in

  1271. the greatest,

  1272. in the right

  1273. sense of the

  1274. word, that

  1275. we rejoice

  1276. with thanksgiving

  1277. and boasting

  1278. that this

  1279. gospel is

  1280. bearing fruit.

  1281. do we

  1282. rejoice when

  1283. we hear

  1284. as we

  1285. have

  1286. updates,

  1287. even within

  1288. our own

  1289. denomination,

  1290. as we

  1291. are given

  1292. updates of

  1293. what's

  1294. happening in

  1295. other places,

  1296. as we

  1297. hear of

  1298. conversions,

  1299. as we

  1300. hear of

  1301. new members

  1302. in our

  1303. own

  1304. presbytery,

  1305. our own

  1306. islands,

  1307. we rejoice,

  1308. we boast

  1309. because God

  1310. is working

  1311. in the right

  1312. sense of

  1313. boasting.

  1314. or boasting

  1315. when we

  1316. hear of

  1317. new churches

  1318. being planted

  1319. or elders

  1320. and deacons

  1321. being made

  1322. or new

  1323. students coming

  1324. into the

  1325. seminary or

  1326. whatever it

  1327. is, it's

  1328. boasting in

  1329. the right

  1330. sense of

  1331. giving thanks

  1332. to God

  1333. that he is

  1334. in our

  1335. midst, that

  1336. the gospel

  1337. is bearing

  1338. fruit.

  1339. But it's

  1340. always with

  1341. that caveat

  1342. as Paul

  1343. says to

  1344. the Galatians,

  1345. may I

  1346. never boast

  1347. except in

  1348. the cross

  1349. of our

  1350. Lord Jesus

  1351. Christ.

  1352. That's

  1353. where boasting

  1354. comes from,

  1355. that Christ

  1356. has done

  1357. it.

  1358. We boast

  1359. in his

  1360. finished work

  1361. because that

  1362. is the

  1363. work that

  1364. is bearing

  1365. fruit.

  1366. There's

  1367. always a

  1368. danger of

  1369. jealousy or

  1370. a negative

  1371. attitude coming

  1372. through in

  1373. all that we

  1374. do.

  1375. It's been

  1376. there down

  1377. through all

  1378. the generations.

  1379. You find it

  1380. in Scripture,

  1381. you find it

  1382. in every

  1383. generation of

  1384. God's

  1385. people,

  1386. the danger

  1387. of jealousy

  1388. and rivalry

  1389. and all of

  1390. these things.

  1391. But what

  1392. Paul encourages

  1393. here is that

  1394. boastful nature

  1395. of rejoicing

  1396. that the

  1397. gospel is in

  1398. everything,

  1399. that we see

  1400. glory for

  1401. God in.

  1402. Whether it's

  1403. here,

  1404. whether it's

  1405. in our

  1406. nation,

  1407. whether it's

  1408. to all the

  1409. ends of

  1410. the earth,

  1411. to all

  1412. different people,

  1413. we can rejoice

  1414. that the

  1415. gospel is

  1416. bearing

  1417. fruit.

  1418. We boast

  1419. in Christ.

  1420. So we

  1421. have thankful,

  1422. we have boastful,

  1423. and then

  1424. finally we

  1425. have here

  1426. faithful,

  1427. being faithful.

  1428. And what

  1429. we see

  1430. here is

  1431. faithfulness

  1432. is at the

  1433. heart of so

  1434. much here

  1435. too.

  1436. We see

  1437. the

  1438. faithfulness

  1439. of Paul,

  1440. who is

  1441. remembering

  1442. the church

  1443. at Colossae,

  1444. who is

  1445. giving thanks

  1446. as he's

  1447. praying for

  1448. the church

  1449. at Colossae.

  1450. There is

  1451. that faithfulness

  1452. of him.

  1453. There is

  1454. the faithfulness

  1455. of Epaphras,

  1456. as it speaks

  1457. of in

  1458. verse 7.

  1459. Our

  1460. beloved

  1461. fellow

  1462. servant,

  1463. he is a

  1464. faithful

  1465. minister

  1466. of Christ.

  1467. on your

  1468. behalf.

  1469. And they

  1470. have the

  1471. people.

  1472. In verse

  1473. 2 it

  1474. says,

  1475. to the

  1476. saints

  1477. and faithful

  1478. brothers in

  1479. Christ at

  1480. Colossae.

  1481. There is a

  1482. sense of

  1483. faithfulness

  1484. right throughout

  1485. all that is

  1486. taking place.

  1487. And

  1488. faithfulness is

  1489. such a key

  1490. feature for

  1491. any Christian's

  1492. life.

  1493. Faithfulness

  1494. towards God,

  1495. towards his

  1496. word,

  1497. towards prayer,

  1498. towards his

  1499. people.

  1500. It is a

  1501. life of

  1502. faithfulness.

  1503. And no

  1504. matter what

  1505. is going

  1506. on around

  1507. us, we

  1508. remain faithful

  1509. and sure

  1510. and steadfast

  1511. in the

  1512. Lord.

  1513. When you

  1514. look at the

  1515. Old Testament,

  1516. you find so

  1517. many of

  1518. God's people

  1519. who were

  1520. faithful in

  1521. the midst of

  1522. very challenging

  1523. periods.

  1524. We think of

  1525. Jeremiah we

  1526. were looking

  1527. at this

  1528. morning.

  1529. So many

  1530. of the

  1531. people are

  1532. turning away

  1533. from God

  1534. and yet

  1535. Jeremiah was

  1536. faithful,

  1537. faithfully

  1538. proclaiming

  1539. the message

  1540. that God

  1541. gave.

  1542. And you

  1543. see it

  1544. as you

  1545. look in

  1546. the book

  1547. of Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1548. chapter 11,

  1549. that great

  1550. book of

  1551. faith,

  1552. and those

  1553. who were

  1554. faithful to

  1555. God in

  1556. the midst

  1557. of all

  1558. kinds of

  1559. situations.

  1560. Situations

  1561. that seemed

  1562. absurd,

  1563. situations

  1564. that seemed

  1565. crazy to

  1566. others around.

  1567. You think

  1568. of Noah

  1569. building an

  1570. ark when

  1571. there was

  1572. no sign

  1573. of water

  1574. or rain

  1575. or anything

  1576. and yet

  1577. he was

  1578. faithful,

  1579. he listened

  1580. to God.

  1581. You think

  1582. of Daniel

  1583. and his

  1584. faithfulness

  1585. in the

  1586. midst of

  1587. great

  1588. challenges

  1589. when he

  1590. was being

  1591. told to

  1592. bow down

  1593. to the

  1594. king

  1595. instead

  1596. of God

  1597. with the

  1598. very threat

  1599. of his

  1600. life and

  1601. yet he

  1602. was faithful

  1603. to God

  1604. and was

  1605. blessed.

  1606. Faithfulness

  1607. is so

  1608. important.

  1609. Epaphras,

  1610. it wasn't

  1611. easy for

  1612. him and

  1613. yet he

  1614. was faithful.

  1615. He was

  1616. faithful with

  1617. the gospel

  1618. that he

  1619. had heard

  1620. himself and

  1621. he brought

  1622. it to his

  1623. beloved brothers

  1624. and sisters

  1625. here in

  1626. Colossae that

  1627. they might

  1628. hear of the

  1629. wonder of

  1630. this Christ.

  1631. He was

  1632. faithful and

  1633. all our

  1634. faithfulness is

  1635. built on the

  1636. fact of Jesus'

  1637. faithfulness to

  1638. us and what

  1639. he has done

  1640. for us.

  1641. we can be

  1642. faithful because

  1643. he was

  1644. faithful for

  1645. us.

  1646. He did

  1647. all for

  1648. us.

  1649. And so

  1650. as Paul is

  1651. writing to

  1652. this church

  1653. at Colossae

  1654. to be

  1655. thankful,

  1656. to be

  1657. boastful,

  1658. to be

  1659. faithful,

  1660. it's all

  1661. for Christ.

  1662. It's all

  1663. for him

  1664. that he

  1665. might get

  1666. glory and

  1667. that the

  1668. gospel would

  1669. go on

  1670. bearing

  1671. fruit.

  1672. And that's

  1673. what it is

  1674. for us

  1675. too, to

  1676. remember what

  1677. we have in

  1678. Christ and

  1679. that we

  1680. would be

  1681. thankful for

  1682. all of that,

  1683. that we

  1684. would be

  1685. boastful,

  1686. that we

  1687. would be

  1688. encouraged that

  1689. God is in

  1690. our midst and

  1691. that we would

  1692. be faithful in

  1693. serving him

  1694. and in all

  1695. that we do

  1696. for him.

  1697. There was a

  1698. story told

  1699. about a

  1700. man who

  1701. was a

  1702. clerk in a

  1703. small hotel

  1704. in a

  1705. town in

  1706. America.

  1707. And this

  1708. night, a

  1709. stormy night,

  1710. heavy rain

  1711. outside, an

  1712. elderly couple

  1713. arrived at

  1714. the hotel.

  1715. They came in

  1716. through the

  1717. door and

  1718. they came up

  1719. to the

  1720. clerk at

  1721. the reception

  1722. and asked

  1723. if they

  1724. could have

  1725. a room.

  1726. And the

  1727. clerk at

  1728. the desk

  1729. said,

  1730. I'm sorry,

  1731. but we're

  1732. full.

  1733. And I

  1734. know for a

  1735. fact that

  1736. all the

  1737. towns,

  1738. all the

  1739. hotels in

  1740. the town

  1741. are full

  1742. as well.

  1743. Then he

  1744. said,

  1745. but I

  1746. can't

  1747. send you

  1748. back out

  1749. into the

  1750. rain.

  1751. How about

  1752. would you

  1753. stay in

  1754. my room?

  1755. He had

  1756. his own

  1757. room in

  1758. the hotel.

  1759. You can

  1760. stay in

  1761. my room

  1762. and I'll

  1763. stay out

  1764. at the

  1765. desk

  1766. through the

  1767. night.

  1768. The

  1769. couple

  1770. hesitated,

  1771. but the

  1772. clerk insisted

  1773. that they

  1774. would stay

  1775. in his

  1776. room.

  1777. The next

  1778. morning,

  1779. when the

  1780. couple were

  1781. leaving,

  1782. the man

  1783. came and

  1784. paid his

  1785. bill.

  1786. He had

  1787. stayed a

  1788. night in

  1789. the hotel,

  1790. therefore he

  1791. was wanting

  1792. to pay

  1793. for the

  1794. room.

  1795. And the

  1796. man said

  1797. to him as

  1798. he was

  1799. departing,

  1800. you're the

  1801. kind of

  1802. man who

  1803. should be

  1804. managing the

  1805. best hotel

  1806. in the

  1807. United States

  1808. has to

  1809. offer.

  1810. Someday I'll

  1811. build you

  1812. one.

  1813. And the

  1814. clerk at

  1815. the desk

  1816. just laughed

  1817. it off,

  1818. thought nothing

  1819. else of it.

  1820. Until a

  1821. couple of

  1822. years later,

  1823. a letter

  1824. arrived from

  1825. this elderly

  1826. man.

  1827. outlining

  1828. and remembering

  1829. that he

  1830. had been

  1831. so faithful

  1832. to them

  1833. as a

  1834. couple and

  1835. letting them

  1836. stay in

  1837. his room

  1838. that night,

  1839. inviting him

  1840. to come to

  1841. New York,

  1842. that he had

  1843. something to

  1844. say to

  1845. him.

  1846. And so

  1847. the man,

  1848. the clerk,

  1849. the ticket

  1850. was there,

  1851. he took it

  1852. and he went

  1853. to New York,

  1854. he was met

  1855. by this elderly

  1856. man who

  1857. took him

  1858. to this

  1859. brand new

  1860. building,

  1861. a brand new

  1862. hotel,

  1863. and said,

  1864. that's mine.

  1865. And I

  1866. want you

  1867. to manage

  1868. it.

  1869. He hadn't

  1870. forgotten the

  1871. kindness of

  1872. that man

  1873. when he

  1874. needed him

  1875. and he

  1876. invited him

  1877. to be

  1878. the hotel

  1879. manager.

  1880. And so

  1881. he did.

  1882. Well,

  1883. remember who

  1884. it is we

  1885. are to be

  1886. faithful to.

  1887. Even in the

  1888. least of

  1889. these things

  1890. as the

  1891. scripture

  1892. describes it,

  1893. the least

  1894. of these

  1895. things you

  1896. have been

  1897. faithful to

  1898. me and

  1899. there is

  1900. great reward.

  1901. When we

  1902. are faithful

  1903. to Christ,

  1904. even in the

  1905. least of

  1906. these things,

  1907. we remember

  1908. who we're

  1909. serving,

  1910. we remember

  1911. what he's

  1912. doing,

  1913. that he is

  1914. building not

  1915. a hotel,

  1916. but a

  1917. kingdom,

  1918. his kingdom,

  1919. and that

  1920. people are

  1921. being called

  1922. into his

  1923. kingdom,

  1924. to be part

  1925. of his

  1926. kingdom.

  1927. Through the

  1928. least of

  1929. the things

  1930. that we

  1931. do for

  1932. him,

  1933. we are

  1934. to be

  1935. faithful.

  1936. And when

  1937. we are

  1938. faithful,

  1939. he

  1940. blesses.

  1941. That's the

  1942. encouragement

  1943. that Paul

  1944. is giving to

  1945. the church,

  1946. to the people

  1947. at Colossae.

  1948. They may be

  1949. small,

  1950. they may feel

  1951. discouraged,

  1952. they may have

  1953. their challenges,

  1954. they may not

  1955. know where

  1956. things are

  1957. going,

  1958. but he is

  1959. reminding God

  1960. is with them.

  1961. And with

  1962. God, we are

  1963. to be thankful,

  1964. thankful for

  1965. all of his

  1966. people, for

  1967. all that he

  1968. is doing.

  1969. We are to be

  1970. boastful,

  1971. boasting in the

  1972. right sense,

  1973. that the

  1974. gospel is

  1975. bearing fruit

  1976. all over the

  1977. world, that we

  1978. are part of

  1979. that, and

  1980. to be

  1981. faithful, to

  1982. be faithful in

  1983. all that we

  1984. do for him,

  1985. even the

  1986. littlest of

  1987. things, seeking

  1988. his blessing

  1989. in all.

  1990. So may we

  1991. be a people

  1992. who are

  1993. thankful, giving

  1994. praise to

  1995. him, who

  1996. are boastful

  1997. that God is

  1998. with us, and

  1999. who are

  2000. faithful in

  2001. all that we

  2002. do.

  2003. Let us

  2004. pray.

  2005. Lord, our

  2006. gracious God,

  2007. help us

  2008. to be

  2009. encouraged by

  2010. your word,

  2011. help us to

  2012. be a people

  2013. who don't

  2014. just see our

  2015. glasses half

  2016. full, but

  2017. that see it

  2018. overflowing,

  2019. for you are

  2020. the fullness

  2021. of all, you

  2022. are the

  2023. richest of

  2024. all things,

  2025. and we

  2026. thank you

  2027. that you,

  2028. when you

  2029. are with

  2030. us, Lord,

  2031. help us

  2032. to know

  2033. your glory

  2034. and your

  2035. power.

  2036. And so,

  2037. Lord, we

  2038. ask that you

  2039. would bless

  2040. all that we

  2041. seek to do

  2042. in your

  2043. name, help

  2044. us to be

  2045. thankful, help

  2046. us to boast

  2047. in the gospel

  2048. of our Lord

  2049. Jesus Christ,

  2050. and help us

  2051. to be faithful

  2052. in all that

  2053. you ask us

  2054. to do for

  2055. it.

  2056. And so, we

  2057. pray, Lord,

  2058. that you will

  2059. guide us and

  2060. help us, and

  2061. that we would

  2062. give all glory

  2063. to you, that

  2064. your kingdom

  2065. would come in

  2066. power, as we

  2067. ask it all in

  2068. the precious name

  2069. of our Lord

  2070. and Saviour,

  2071. Jesus Christ.

  2072. Amen.

  2073. Amen.

  2074. we're going

  2075. to conclude

  2076. by singing

  2077. in Psalm 26,

  2078. and let's

  2079. sing Psalm's

  2080. version,

  2081. page 31,

  2082. Psalm 26.

  2083. We'll sing

  2084. from verse 7

  2085. down to the

  2086. end of the

  2087. psalm, the

  2088. tune is

  2089. Balerma.

  2090. I'll tell of

  2091. all your

  2092. awesome deeds,

  2093. proclaiming loud

  2094. your praise,

  2095. your glory

  2096. fills, your

  2097. dwelling place,

  2098. I love, I love

  2099. your house

  2100. always.

  2101. from verse 7

  2102. to the end

  2103. of the

  2104. psalm, we

  2105. stand to

  2106. sing.

  2107. Amen.

  2108. sing.

  2109. Amen.

  2110. Amen.

  2111. Amen.

  2112. Amen.

  2113. Amen.

  2114. Amen.

  2115. Amen.

  2116. After the

  2117. benediction, I'll

  2118. go to the

  2119. door to my

  2120. right.

  2121. We'll close

  2122. with the

  2123. benediction.

2124. now may grace mercy and peace from god father son and holy spirit rest upon and abide with you all

  2125. now and forevermore amen
