  1. We're going to begin our worship by singing to God's praise.

  2. We're going to sing in Psalm 23, the Scottish Psalter version, page 229 of the psalm books, Psalm 23.

  3. !

  4. The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want. He makes me down to lie in pastures green.

  5. He leadeth me the quiet waters by.

  6. We'll stand to sing the whole of this psalm to God's praise.

  7. I'll not want. He makes me down to lie in pastures green.

  8. He leadeth me the quiet waters by.

  9. My soul he doth restore again, and he to work the name.

  10. Within the paths of righteousness, before his soul may sing.

  11. Hear, though I walk in death's dark hill, yet will I hear not ill.

  12. For thou art lift me on thy own.

  13. I'm standing on for still.

  14. My devil, thou hast furnished, in presence of my foes.

  15. My devil, thou hast with oil anoint, and my cup overflows.

  16. To death's and mercy, O my life, shall surely follow me.

  17. And in God's eyes forevermore, my dwelling place shall be.

  18. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer. Let us pray.

  19. Our Father in heaven, we thank you to be able to sing these words together,

  20. to offer up worship to you in song,

  21. and to sing these words that perhaps we've sung so often in the past,

  22. words that we maybe even know without looking at the pages of our Bibles.

  23. We can repeat them, but help us today to know the wonder of them,

  24. the wonder of the Lord, our Lord Jesus as our shepherd,

  25. the one who leads us and guides us, the one who helps us in all our lives.

  26. Every one of us today are dependent upon you, young and old alike.

  27. And we do ask, Lord, that together you will bless us,

  28. that you will be with us as we come to hear of you,

  29. to hear your word and study it together.

  30. Bless the young ones in the Sunday school, in the creche, the tweenies, in the Bible class.

  31. We thank you for every one of the children here and the families together as well.

  32. And together as a people, Lord, that we would have hearts filled with a sense of joy

  33. in coming to you and knowing that you are with us, that you meet here with us.

  34. We thank you for even the Lord's prayer as we say it week by week.

  35. It reminds us of how we are dependent upon you as our Father in heaven.

  36. And we pray that even as we say these words together in a moment,

  37. that there will be words that we may be familiar with as well,

  38. that help us to know who it is we are praying to and what you are able to do for us.

  39. And so may we all together know what the power of prayer is,

  40. and we especially think of our young people going through exams at this time,

  41. that they would do so with that knowledge that they can ask you for help,

  42. that they can ask you for guidance, and that you are there for them.

  43. And we do pray for them, for all our children,

  44. and we just pray for exam periods ahead.

  45. Just now, Lord, that you would give clarity and help in all that they have to do.

  46. Bless us and we pray and watch over us as we ask all with the forgiveness of our sins.

  47. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  48. Well, I was just praying there about exams,

  49. and maybe it's the last thing you want to hear about just now when you're going into May

  50. and the exams are starting for those who are older in the higher classes.

  51. But every one of us has to face tests at different points in our life.

  52. And especially as we're going through school, we do different kinds of tests as we're going through school.

  53. And one of the tests we often have is listening tests.

  54. So who's good at listening? Hands up if you're good at listening.

  55. Many people say, what?

  56. You weren't listening, were you?

  57. Listening is a skill.

  58. It's something we have to learn and to pay attention to things that we are hearing.

  59. But it's often a difficult thing for us to do because we're easily distracted.

  60. So I want to give you a little test just now.

  61. I'm going to read some verses from Psalm 81.

  62. And I want you to listen out for words that are related to hearing.

  63. And I think the teachers, when they're in school, they do this, do they?

  64. So that you have to listen in.

  65. You have to listen carefully to these words.

  66. I'm going to read Psalm 81 at verse 8 down to verse 13.

  67. Hear, my people, let me warn you, if you would but listen now.

  68. No strange God shall be among you.

  69. To a false God do not bow.

  70. I have brought you up from Egypt, from your own God, the Lord am I.

  71. Open wide your mouth towards me, and your food I will supply.

  72. But my people would not listen, would not do what I required.

  73. So I gave them up to follow what their stubborn hearts desired.

  74. If my people would but heed me, Israel follow my command.

  75. I would soon subdue their enemies and against them turn my hand.

  76. So, how many times there did you hear something related to listening?

  77. It comes up quite often there, doesn't it?

  78. The word listen is there twice.

  79. The word hear is the first word that was mentioned.

  80. Hear, my people.

  81. And then there was the word heed in verse 13 as well.

  82. So four times at least you could say there's a word there that's to do with listening.

  83. And so God is speaking there, and so it's important, as he says, hear, listen, heed, all of these things to us.

  84. And that's what's important for us as we come to God's word, as we're hearing it here, as we're hearing it in our Sunday school classes too, that we listen.

  85. Now, what do we need in order to listen?

  86. Listen, first of all, we need to stop.

  87. Stop what we're doing and just pause so that we're sitting ready to listen.

  88. The other thing we need is quietness.

  89. If there was loads of noise going on around us, if there was a building site or something outside and people were working away there,

  90. and there's so much noise around, we wouldn't be able to hear, so we need quietness to be able to hear.

  91. And the third thing we need is focus.

  92. To listen is to listen as it's going on.

  93. I mean, when you're in the house, do you listen to everything mum and dad say to you?

  94. At what point do you stop listening?

  95. They'll shout your name, so they maybe shout,

  96. Callum, come and do, and that's when you stop listening.

  97. Do, no, I'm not going to listen anymore.

  98. I don't want to do anything but what I want to do myself.

  99. We need to focus.

  100. And God is calling us all today to come and to stop and to focus and to listen and to do.

  101. And so today we have to stop, hear, listen, and heed the word of God.

  102. May he give us that skill, that ability to listen and to hear what he is saying to us.

  103. We're going to say the Lord's Prayer together now.

  104. Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

  105. Thy kingdom come.

  106. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  107. Give us this day our daily bread.

  108. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

  109. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  110. for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever.

  111. Amen.

  112. We're going to sing together again to God's praise this time

  113. in Psalm 107, the Scottish Psalter version, page 384.

  114. Psalm 107, and at verse 23,

  115. page 384 of the psalm books.

  116. And then we're reminded of the passage that we're looking at today,

  117. how Jesus is able to bring calm into the midst of a storm.

  118. And in verse 29, it says that the storm is changed into a calm

  119. at his command and will.

  120. We're going to sing from verse 23 to 30 to God's praise.

  121. Thank you.

  122. Thank you.

  123. Thank you.

  124. Thank you.

  125. Which makes the sea with roaring wings

  126. I want to swell and rise

  127. If unto heaven and to the dead

  128. They do all come again

  129. Their soul of pain can melt away

  130. With love alone with fear

  131. They relapse stagger like wonder

  132. At their waves in daily

  133. Then they do come in trouble cry

  134. Who then from straits are free

  135. The storm is changed into account

  136. At his command and will

  137. So that the waves which raged before

  138. Now quiet and still

  139. Then are they not because of rest

  140. And quiet the lady

  141. So to the lady

  142. I will turn to read God's word together now in the gospel of Mark

  143. And chapter 6

  144. Mark chapter 6

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  145. We take up our reading at verse 30

  146. You find it around page 1015

  147. Of the church Bibles

  148. Mark chapter 6 at verse 30

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  149. The apostles returned to Jesus

  150. And told him all that they had done and taught

  151. And he said to them

  152. Come away by yourselves

  153. To a desolate place and rest a while

  154. For many were coming and going

  155. And they had no leisure even to eat

  156. And they went away in the boat

  157. To a desolate place by themselves

  158. Now many saw them going and recognized them

  159. And they ran there on foot from all the towns

  160. And got there ahead of them

  161. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd

  162. And he had compassion on them

  163. Because they were like sheep without a shepherd

  164. And he began to teach them many things

  165. And when it grew late

  166. His disciples came to him

  167. And said

  168. This is a desolate place

  169. And the hour is now late

  170. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages

  171. And buy themselves something to eat

  172. But he answered them

  173. You give them something to eat

  174. And they said to him

  175. Shall we go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread

  176. And give it to them to eat

  177. And he said to them

  178. How many loaves do you have?

  179. Go and see

  180. And when they had found out

  181. They said five and two fish

  182. Then he commanded them all

  183. To sit down in groups on the green grass

  184. So they sat down in groups by hundreds and by fifties

  185. And taking the five loaves and the two fish

  186. He looked up to heaven

  187. And said a blessing

  188. And broke the loaves

  189. And gave them to the disciples

  190. To set before the people

  191. And he divided the two fish among them all

  192. And they all ate and were satisfied

  193. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces

  194. And of fish

  195. And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men

  196. Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat

  197. And go before him to the other side

  198. To Bethsaida

  199. While he dismissed the crowd

  200. And after he had taken leave of them

  201. He went up on the mountain to pray

  202. And when evening came

  203. The boat was out on sea

  204. And he was alone on the land

  205. And he saw that they were making headway painfully

  206. For the wind was against them

  207. And about the fourth watch of the night

  208. He came to them walking on the sea

  209. He meant to pass by them

  210. But when they saw him walking on the sea

  211. They thought it was a ghost and cried out

  212. For they all saw him and were terrified

  213. But immediately he spoke to them and said

  214. Take heart

  215. It is I

  216. Do not be afraid

  217. And he got into the boat with them

  218. And the wind ceased

  219. And they were utterly astounded

  220. For they did not understand about the loaves

  221. But their hearts were hardened

  222. And so on

  223. And may God bless that reading from his word

  224. We'll again come to God in prayer

  225. Let us pray

  226. Our Father in heaven

  227. As we approach your word

  228. We do so

  229. Recognising

  230. Our own lack of understanding

  231. And even

  232. As the disciples here

  233. Were seeing and hearing

  234. The wonders of Jesus

  235. It says

  236. Their hearts were hardened

  237. And we know ourselves

  238. That that can be true

  239. At times in our own experience

  240. Perhaps even we come in here today

  241. With that sense of

  242. Of hardness

  243. Of not coming to listen

  244. But maybe just coming

  245. And just to show

  246. Our face here

  247. And to put others at ease

  248. That we have come

  249. But we thank you

  250. That as we come

  251. We come under

  252. What is your word

  253. A living

  254. And an active word

  255. And a word that is powerful

  256. A word that we see there

  257. That is still through to this day

  258. That Jesus as he spoke

  259. Had the power to calm

  260. Even the wind itself

  261. And the waves of the sea

  262. And we thank you

  263. That that is true for us today as well

  264. That you are the one

  265. Who is able to calm us

  266. And to change out every situation

  267. That seems so powerless to us

  268. That we have no ability

  269. To change anything

  270. In and of ourselves

  271. But your word reminds us

  272. That you are the one

  273. Who is able

  274. And so we come in prayer to you

  275. Depending on you

  276. Depending on you

  277. For all things

  278. From the beginning of a day

  279. To the end

  280. And even through the watches

  281. Of the night

  282. When we may

  283. Be unaware of everything

  284. Going on around us

  285. When we are in the depths of sleep

  286. We thank you

  287. That you are one

  288. Who is constantly awake

  289. Never slumbering

  290. Nor sleeping

  291. As the psalmist says

  292. But that you are always

  293. Watching over your people

  294. That your presence is near

  295. And in all our cares

  296. And all our anxieties

  297. And all our thanksgivings

  298. We thank you

  299. That we can come

  300. And bring them all to you

  301. As the one who hears us

  302. That you hear us

  303. Through the name of your son

  304. Our Lord and saviour

  305. Jesus Christ

  306. And as we have read of him

  307. And how he prayed

  308. To you himself

  309. We thank you

  310. That even as he was dependent

  311. In all things

  312. That we too are as well

  313. And so Lord

  314. We thank you

  315. That we come

  316. Through a name

  317. Above every name

  318. That we offer up our prayers

  319. In and through

  320. The name of Jesus

  321. And so hear us

  322. Lord we ask

  323. And may your will be done

  324. And may all be

  325. To your glory

  326. And we do ask

  327. Oh Lord

  328. For all our different needs today

  329. And the needs of those around us

  330. We thank you

  331. That again

  332. You are the one

  333. The one who is able to comfort

  334. The one who is able to heal

  335. The one who is able to help

  336. In any and every circumstance

  337. And we know Lord

  338. The many around us

  339. Who need you

  340. In particular ways

  341. And especially

  342. Oh Lord

  343. In times of

  344. Of grief and sorrow

  345. As in our own midst

  346. Lord

  347. There are

  348. Those who grieve

  349. And those

  350. Who we know

  351. Even in our own denomination

  352. Who are grieving today

  353. In the midst of loss

  354. We thank you

  355. That you are

  356. A God of all comfort

  357. And so throughout

  358. Our communities today

  359. May that comfort

  360. Be evident

  361. In special ways

  362. That people

  363. Would know

  364. The everlasting arms

  365. Underneath

  366. Upholding

  367. And strengthening

  368. We do remember

  369. Even those

  370. In our own denomination

  371. Who have been servants

  372. To you

  373. And who have been

  374. Taken to glory

  375. As we have heard

  376. Of the passing

  377. Of the Reverend Ian Allen

  378. In these days

  379. We thank you

  380. For his life

  381. And for his ministry

  382. In different places

  383. And over many years

  384. We do

  385. Lord

  386. Give thanks

  387. For the word

  388. That he preached

  389. So faithfully

  390. And pray Lord

  391. That even

  392. It would still

  393. Continue

  394. To bear fruit

  395. We do pray Lord

  396. For comfort

  397. For his family

  398. That you will

  399. Surround them

  400. In these times

  401. We thank you

  402. Of the Macphersion family

  403. The Reverend John Macphersion

  404. And his wife Catherine

  405. In the sad news

  406. Of the sudden loss

  407. Of a son Malcolm

  408. We pray Lord

  409. That you will

  410. Surround them

  411. And comfort them

  412. As only you can

  413. And Dave Macphersion

  414. As well

  415. The Reverend Dave Macphersion

  416. And his brother

  417. In Govan too

  418. Lord

  419. We just pray Lord

  420. For him and his family

  421. As well

  422. And in this time

  423. Of grief Lord

  424. That you would be one

  425. Who is very near

  426. And we know too Lord

  427. That there are those

  428. Who are going through

  429. Ill health

  430. And so many different trials

  431. And we just commit

  432. Each one to you

  433. And Lord

  434. When they cannot pray

  435. That they would feel

  436. That they could ask

  437. For prayer

  438. Or that they would know

  439. That there are people

  440. Praying for them

  441. And we do ask

  442. Oh Lord

  443. That you will

  444. Just go before us

  445. In all of these things

  446. We thank you Lord

  447. Of our nation

  448. And all that's going on

  449. As we know

  450. The various issues

  451. Going on in parliaments

  452. At this time

  453. We thank you

  454. For your hearing of prayer

  455. And so many different things

  456. To do with the gender recognition

  457. And we thank you Lord

  458. For the way that you are able

  459. To turn the tide in that

  460. And we thank you

  461. Of the upcoming

  462. Assisted Suicide Bill

  463. And we pray Lord

  464. For wisdom

  465. And for your intervention

  466. And those who maybe have

  467. Leanings towards it

  468. That they would be convinced

  469. Otherwise

  470. For we know that

  471. Life is precious

  472. And life is in your hands

  473. And we know that

  474. Although there can be

  475. So much that will be

  476. Painted as intended for good

  477. That we see it

  478. Oh Lord

  479. In the wider picture

  480. That it can be used

  481. Oh Lord

  482. In so many wicked ways

  483. And so we pray Lord

  484. That you would come

  485. In a day of your power

  486. And heal our land

  487. And pour blessing upon us

  488. To see your goodness

  489. And your mercy with us

  490. In all of these things

  491. We pray that for the world

  492. In which we live in as well

  493. A world in so much turmoil

  494. A world with so much conflict

  495. And hatred being showered

  496. Upon so many

  497. In so many different ways

  498. We see Lord

  499. A stirring of anger

  500. In so many places

  501. And we just pray for peace

  502. May your peace come

  503. And so Lord

  504. Hear our prayers

  505. And give our people

  506. Ears to listen

  507. To hear what you are saying to us

  508. As you call us

  509. To bow the knee before you

  510. May you open hearts and minds

  511. To receive the wonder of the gospel

  512. That we would be astounded

  513. Even as the disciples were

  514. In this passage that we've read

  515. That people would be astounded

  516. At what you are able to do

  517. And to do for good

  518. So hear our prayers

  519. Continue with us

  520. And go before us

  521. In the rest of this day

  522. That's all we ask

  523. We ask for the forgiveness

  524. Of our sin

  525. In Jesus' name

  526. Amen

  527. Well before we come back

  528. To look at this passage

  529. We'll sing again

  530. To God's praise

  531. In Psalm 62

  532. In the Sing Psalms version

  533. Psalm 62

  534. On page 79

  535. Of the Psalm books

  536. We're going to sing

  537. From verse 1

  538. Down to verse 8

  539. Psalm 62

  540. On page 79

  541. My soul finds rest

  542. In God alone

  543. From him comes my salvation sure

  544. My safety fortress

  545. Sheltering rock

  546. In him alone

  547. I am secure

  548. We'll sing from verse 1 to 8

  549. And we stand to sing

  550. To God's praise

  551. In the Sing Psalms

  552. And we stand to sing

  553. To God's praise

  554. In God alone

  555. From him comes my salvation sure

  556. My safety fortress

  557. Shelter secure

  558. In the Singwasser

  559. And his hope

  560. And his hope

  561. And his hope

  562. From his high place

  563. They take delight

  564. In spreading eyes

  565. With force

  566. And fighting

  567. Clouds may bless

  568. But in

  569. Thy hearts

  570. Are times

  571. Despite

  572. I rest

  573. My soul

  574. And brought

  575. Alone

  576. In him

  577. My hope

  578. Is ever

  579. Burture

  580. My safety forecast shall be brought, in him alone I am secure.

  581. I own the land's salvation rest, on God my rock and my deep heart.

  582. O people, trust in him always, to him alone for a pure heart.

  583. We can turn back to a reading in the Gospel of Mark, chapter 6.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  584. I'm reading again at verse 48.

  585. Mark, chapter 6, at verse 48.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  586. And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them.

  587. And about the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking on the sea.

  588. He meant to pass by them.

  589. But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out.

  590. For they all saw him and were terrified.

  591. But immediately he spoke to them and said,

  592. Take heart, it is I.

  593. Do not be afraid.

  594. Are you afraid to follow Jesus?

  595. You may have come in here today just thinking,

  596. I just want to come and go and maybe not truly hear what the Word of God is saying,

  597. because you may be afraid of what it might say to you,

  598. what difference it might make in your life.

  599. Are you afraid to follow Jesus, to hear what he says?

  600. Well, you're not alone.

  601. It's not a new thing.

  602. It's there from the beginning of time.

  603. It'll be there till the return of the Lord Jesus.

  604. There'll be a sense of fear in terms of what Jesus means.

  605. And sometimes it's a good thing to be afraid.

  606. It's a good thing to be afraid because it can make us look for what the right answer is

  607. and where help can be found in our fear.

  608. And as you're reading here in the Gospel of Mark,

  609. as you're looking at the first half of the Gospel of Mark,

  610. it's full of accounts of Jesus revealing himself to the people in so many different ways.

  611. You see there's many miracles that he's done,

  612. so many teachings that he's given,

  613. and people were marveling.

  614. And you think to yourself,

  615. well, the more they're seeing,

  616. the more they'll believe,

  617. the more people that there will be that will believe.

  618. But yes, there were some who believed,

  619. but there was many who turned away

  620. and many who were afraid

  621. because he was preaching a truth to them

  622. that they couldn't fully understand.

  623. So truth and fear are often things that go together.

  624. There can be anxiety in the midst of hearing truth

  625. and you're wondering,

  626. is it true?

  627. You think even of this coming week,

  628. it marks 80 years

  629. since VE Day,

  630. Victory in Europe Day,

  631. when the Second World War

  632. came to an end,

  633. when peace came.

  634. And you can imagine

  635. the differing emotions

  636. that would have been throughout the country

  637. at that time.

  638. So many mixed emotions,

  639. so many tears flowing,

  640. tears of joy and tears of sadness

  641. mixed together.

  642. Joy and fear just there in abundance.

  643. And for some,

  644. it was probably a moment

  645. where they would actually ask,

  646. is it really true?

  647. Do we really have peace?

  648. It would have been hard to believe

  649. after all that they'd gone through.

  650. Was it actually a day when peace

  651. had come?

  652. Can we believe what we're hearing?

  653. And as we come to the Word of God,

  654. sometimes we read through it

  655. and we think,

  656. can this really be true?

  657. Does this really matter to my life?

  658. It can make us turn away

  659. and reject it.

  660. It can make us afraid

  661. and it can also fill us

  662. with joy.

  663. And you see here

  664. that just mixture of emotions.

  665. The disciples terrified

  666. and astounded

  667. just in a short space of time.

  668. And you see it again and again

  669. as you're going through Scripture.

  670. This is often what the truth

  671. of God does.

  672. And especially when it comes

  673. to seeing Jesus

  674. and who He is.

  675. You just think back

  676. a couple of chapters

  677. to chapter 4.

  678. And there was,

  679. Jesus was with the disciples

  680. in a boat

  681. on another occasion

  682. in the middle of a storm.

  683. And they're afraid.

  684. And they asked,

  685. do you not care

  686. that we are perishing?

  687. Do you not care

  688. that we are dying here?

  689. And Jesus is able

  690. to calm that storm.

  691. Peace, be still.

  692. And the wind

  693. and the waves ceased.

  694. And they're asking,

  695. who is this?

  696. They're afraid

  697. of this Jesus.

  698. And you see it

  699. in chapter 5 as well

  700. in verse 15 to 17.

  701. Another time

  702. when Jesus did a miracle.

  703. He healed a demon-possessed man.

  704. And you see the crowd's reaction.

  705. They're afraid.

  706. And what do they do?

  707. They beg Jesus

  708. to go away.

  709. To leave us alone.

  710. And is that what we need

  711. when we hear about Jesus?

  712. Just beg him.

  713. Just go away.

  714. Leave me alone.

  715. I'm too afraid

  716. of these things.

  717. Well, fear often keeps us

  718. from recognizing Jesus

  719. and who he is

  720. and what he wants for us.

  721. Fear paralyzes us.

  722. But we need to hear

  723. what he is saying to us.

  724. We need to overcome

  725. that fear

  726. and come to be a people

  727. of faith

  728. instead of fear.

  729. We are being paralyzed

  730. by fear.

  731. We've all got maybe

  732. different fears

  733. and we're afraid

  734. of certain situations

  735. and it leaves us

  736. kind of paralyzed.

  737. If you're afraid

  738. of heights,

  739. you start climbing a ladder,

  740. you look down,

  741. the fear

  742. can just paralyze you.

  743. You're stuck.

  744. You cannot go up.

  745. You cannot go down.

  746. Fear of spiders

  747. leaves you afraid

  748. of going into

  749. any room

  750. where you've seen

  751. when you close the door

  752. and you're afraid

  753. to go in there again

  754. until that spider's gone.

  755. Fear of the doctor.

  756. You just say,

  757. I'm not going.

  758. I'm afraid

  759. what he might say to me.

  760. We can be afraid

  761. in so many different situations.

  762. But are you afraid here?

  763. Are you afraid

  764. as you're hearing

  765. the word of God?

  766. Fear stirs us up

  767. to see we need faith.

  768. And somebody once said,

  769. I am inwardly fashioned

  770. for faith,

  771. not for fear.

  772. Fear is not

  773. my native land.

  774. Faith is.

  775. I am not made

  776. for fear and worry.

  777. They are the sand

  778. of the machinery of life.

  779. They're there

  780. to grind away

  781. and to damage

  782. the machinery.

  783. But faith is the oil.

  784. Faith is the oil

  785. that keeps machinery

  786. lubricated,

  787. that keeps our lives

  788. going in the right direction.

  789. fear and worry

  790. leaves me grasping

  791. for breath.

  792. But faith and confidence

  793. helps me to breathe freely.

  794. We are not designed

  795. for fear,

  796. but we are a people

  797. of fear.

  798. But we are to be

  799. a people of faith.

  800. So is fear

  801. keeping you back today?

  802. Are you afraid

  803. of Jesus?

  804. Are you afraid

  805. of what might happen

  806. if you commit

  807. to Jesus?

  808. Are you afraid

  809. that you'll let him down?

  810. Are you afraid

  811. of what people

  812. will think?

  813. Are you afraid

  814. maybe you're sitting

  815. at home

  816. watching online?

  817. Are you afraid

  818. to come to church

  819. in case something

  820. happens?

  821. We should be more

  822. afraid

  823. of what will happen

  824. if we don't come

  825. to Jesus.

  826. We should be more

  827. afraid of not

  828. listening

  829. to Jesus

  830. because the day

  831. comes when we have

  832. to appear

  833. before him.

  834. And we need

  835. to be a people

  836. of faith,

  837. believing

  838. in him.

  839. William Garnall

  840. once said,

  841. we fear men

  842. so much

  843. because we fear

  844. God so little.

  845. What are we

  846. more afraid

  847. of today?

  848. What people

  849. will think,

  850. what people

  851. will say,

  852. or what God

  853. the Lord

  854. will think?

  855. Are we afraid

  856. of Jesus?

  857. Well,

  858. the disciples

  859. here,

  860. they were learning.

  861. and there was

  862. a mix of fear

  863. and faith

  864. all intermingled.

  865. And I want us

  866. to look at

  867. three things

  868. from this passage

  869. today.

  870. And they help us

  871. to see our own

  872. lives as well.

  873. And the three things

  874. are the Lord's

  875. paths,

  876. the way the Lord

  877. leads us.

  878. And then you see

  879. the Lord's presence

  880. and then the Lord's

  881. prompting.

  882. And there are

  883. three things,

  884. situations that can

  885. leave us afraid,

  886. but that can also

  887. give us assurance.

  888. And the first thing

  889. we see is the

  890. Lord's path.

  891. We can focus,

  892. first of all,

  893. on the disciples

  894. here.

  895. It's late at night

  896. and we've seen

  897. they've fed

  898. the 5,000 men

  899. there.

  900. And Jesus

  901. has instructed

  902. them to go

  903. before him

  904. to the other side,

  905. it says in verse

  906. 45,

  907. to Bethsaida,

  908. while he

  909. remained with

  910. the crowd

  911. to dismiss them.

  912. And so

  913. they've listened.

  914. The Lord's

  915. told them

  916. what to do

  917. and they've

  918. gone and

  919. they've done it.

  920. They've gone

  921. out in the boat.

  922. But once more

  923. they find themselves

  924. out on the lake

  925. and a storm

  926. rises,

  927. the wind

  928. is against them.

  929. And it almost

  930. seems to happen

  931. so often

  932. whether they're

  933. away from the

  934. Lord,

  935. that they're

  936. presented with

  937. a challenge.

  938. They're left

  939. in a situation

  940. where what

  941. are you

  942. going to

  943. do

  944. here?

  945. And so

  946. often in

  947. these early

  948. days,

  949. it seems

  950. that fear

  951. is what

  952. overwhelms

  953. them.

  954. Fear is

  955. what almost

  956. overcomes

  957. each time.

  958. And it's

  959. so similar

  960. to the

  961. situation

  962. where they

  963. were in

  964. chapter 4.

  965. The Lord

  966. had instructed

  967. them to go

  968. out in the

  969. boat and

  970. to make

  971. their way

  972. and they're

  973. caught up

  974. in a storm.

  975. the Lord

  976. was directing

  977. them.

  978. It's not

  979. like a

  980. Jonah

  981. situation

  982. where they're

  983. running away

  984. from the

  985. Lord.

  986. When the

  987. Lord's told

  988. him to do

  989. something,

  990. to go one

  991. way,

  992. and he

  993. goes the

  994. completely

  995. opposite,

  996. that's not

  997. the situation

  998. here.

  999. They're doing

  1000. exactly what

  1001. they've been

  1002. told.

  1003. And still

  1004. a storm

  1005. comes.

  1006. They're

  1007. listening to

  1008. Jesus and

  1009. a storm

  1010. arises and

  1011. they're afraid

  1012. in the midst

  1013. of this

  1014. storm.

  1015. And it

  1016. would be

  1017. easy for

  1018. them to

  1019. blame him.

  1020. You've

  1021. sent us

  1022. this way.

  1023. You told

  1024. us to do

  1025. this and

  1026. we're doing

  1027. it and yet

  1028. still here

  1029. we are

  1030. caught in

  1031. a storm.

  1032. But what

  1033. you find

  1034. with the

  1035. disciples is

  1036. that so

  1037. often in

  1038. these early

  1039. experiences

  1040. they're

  1041. obedient to

  1042. the Lord

  1043. but the

  1044. Lord is

  1045. testing them.

  1046. The Lord

  1047. is discipling

  1048. them and

  1049. the Lord

  1050. is reminding

  1051. them of

  1052. their need

  1053. to depend

  1054. on him.

  1055. And the

  1056. same is

  1057. true for

  1058. ourselves.

  1059. If we

  1060. are to be

  1061. a people

  1062. of faith

  1063. there are

  1064. going to

  1065. be times

  1066. of fear,

  1067. times of

  1068. doubt,

  1069. times of

  1070. worry,

  1071. times of

  1072. testing.

  1073. They're

  1074. always going

  1075. to come.

  1076. Even when

  1077. we're doing

  1078. exactly what

  1079. the Lord

  1080. has told

  1081. us.

  1082. We can

  1083. be obedient

  1084. to God

  1085. and doing

  1086. everything

  1087. in his

  1088. will and

  1089. the way

  1090. he wants

  1091. us and

  1092. yet still

  1093. testing

  1094. comes.

  1095. And we

  1096. are thinking

  1097. am I

  1098. wrong?

  1099. Have I

  1100. done the

  1101. wrong thing?

  1102. Yes,

  1103. there are

  1104. times when

  1105. we do

  1106. and the

  1107. Lord will

  1108. teach us

  1109. in that

  1110. as well

  1111. but sometimes

  1112. when we're

  1113. obedient

  1114. testing

  1115. comes.

  1116. But it's

  1117. how we

  1118. respond

  1119. in that

  1120. testing.

  1121. Hardships

  1122. and trials

  1123. will come

  1124. but it's

  1125. not to

  1126. misunderstand

  1127. that we're

  1128. on the

  1129. wrong path.

  1130. The

  1131. Lord's

  1132. paths

  1133. aren't

  1134. always

  1135. easy

  1136. and the

  1137. Lord is

  1138. here

  1139. testing

  1140. the

  1141. disciples

  1142. testing

  1143. them to

  1144. see how

  1145. they respond

  1146. and how

  1147. they react

  1148. and what

  1149. they'll learn

  1150. in the

  1151. midst of

  1152. it but

  1153. the Lord

  1154. is with

  1155. them and

  1156. we'll come

  1157. to that

  1158. in a

  1159. moment.

  1160. But it's

  1161. the reality

  1162. of a life

  1163. of faith

  1164. and fear

  1165. together

  1166. is how

  1167. we respond

  1168. but the

  1169. Lord is

  1170. often teaching

  1171. us.

  1172. And if

  1173. you think

  1174. of different

  1175. career paths

  1176. in life,

  1177. if you

  1178. want to

  1179. be a

  1180. pilot,

  1181. an

  1182. aircraft

  1183. pilot,

  1184. if you

  1185. want to

  1186. go into

  1187. space or

  1188. if you

  1189. want to

  1190. go to

  1191. sea,

  1192. work on

  1193. ships,

  1194. there's

  1195. often times

  1196. in the

  1197. training where

  1198. you have

  1199. to be in

  1200. a simulator

  1201. and you

  1202. go into

  1203. a simulator

  1204. and it

  1205. simulates

  1206. a certain

  1207. situation.

  1208. It may

  1209. be you're

  1210. flying a

  1211. plane and

  1212. a bird

  1213. strike comes.

  1214. How are

  1215. you going

  1216. to deal

  1217. with it?

  1218. Well,

  1219. the simulator

  1220. is a

  1221. safe place

  1222. to learn

  1223. and you'll

  1224. get all

  1225. kinds of

  1226. issues being

  1227. thrown at

  1228. you.

  1229. So maybe

  1230. it's not

  1231. just one

  1232. issue.

  1233. It'll be

  1234. two or

  1235. three things

  1236. coming all

  1237. at once.

  1238. And how

  1239. do you

  1240. respond?

  1241. In a

  1242. simulator,

  1243. it's a

  1244. safe

  1245. environment.

  1246. Training

  1247. you to do

  1248. the right

  1249. thing if it

  1250. happens for

  1251. real.

  1252. And many

  1253. of the

  1254. situations go

  1255. beyond anything

  1256. you'll ever

  1257. see.

  1258. But it's

  1259. still good to

  1260. know how

  1261. to respond.

  1262. And you

  1263. could almost

  1264. look at this

  1265. simulator in

  1266. Jesus'

  1267. experience with

  1268. his disciples.

  1269. He's there

  1270. in a safe

  1271. environment with

  1272. them.

  1273. It's almost

  1274. like they're

  1275. learning to

  1276. ride their

  1277. bike but

  1278. the stabilizers

  1279. are on and

  1280. the parent is

  1281. alongside just

  1282. there to catch

  1283. when we

  1284. fall.

  1285. Well,

  1286. Jesus is here

  1287. putting them

  1288. on these

  1289. paths,

  1290. putting them

  1291. through these

  1292. testing times

  1293. because he's

  1294. preparing them

  1295. for when he's

  1296. not there with

  1297. them, when he

  1298. leaves them

  1299. to it.

  1300. Jesus is

  1301. going to go

  1302. away from

  1303. them.

  1304. He'd be at a

  1305. distance and

  1306. when he's not

  1307. there, how

  1308. will they

  1309. respond?

  1310. Of course,

  1311. he's always

  1312. there as we'll

  1313. see in a

  1314. moment as well.

  1315. But we are

  1316. to learn in

  1317. every situation

  1318. that we're

  1319. going through.

  1320. Trusting

  1321. Jesus is

  1322. what we

  1323. need.

  1324. As we go

  1325. on our own

  1326. paths, as we

  1327. go our own

  1328. way, as we

  1329. live a life

  1330. of faith,

  1331. doing what

  1332. the Lord

  1333. wants,

  1334. obedient to

  1335. him, know

  1336. that testings

  1337. will come,

  1338. that we need

  1339. to lean on

  1340. the Lord

  1341. and be

  1342. prepared through

  1343. learning through

  1344. his word,

  1345. through experience,

  1346. through the

  1347. experience of

  1348. others.

  1349. Even as James

  1350. says in his

  1351. letter,

  1352. consider it

  1353. pure joy,

  1354. my brothers,

  1355. whenever you

  1356. face trials

  1357. of many kinds

  1358. because you

  1359. know the

  1360. testing of

  1361. your faith

  1362. develops

  1363. perseverance.

  1364. And

  1365. perseverance

  1366. must finish

  1367. its work

  1368. so that you

  1369. may be

  1370. mature and

  1371. complete,

  1372. not lacking

  1373. in anything.

  1374. It's there

  1375. for us.

  1376. We're going

  1377. through the

  1378. fire,

  1379. testing,

  1380. but it's

  1381. for our

  1382. good.

  1383. To make us

  1384. mature and

  1385. complete,

  1386. not lacking

  1387. in anything.

  1388. are you

  1389. afraid of

  1390. what Jesus

  1391. might put

  1392. you through?

  1393. Are you

  1394. afraid of

  1395. what path

  1396. Jesus might

  1397. take you

  1398. down?

  1399. Well,

  1400. whatever it

  1401. is,

  1402. it's to be

  1403. obedient to

  1404. God.

  1405. It may be

  1406. a hard

  1407. path,

  1408. but be

  1409. obedient to

  1410. God and

  1411. follow the

  1412. way that he's

  1413. showing.

  1414. The Lord's

  1415. path is one

  1416. filled with

  1417. testing but

  1418. also teaching.

  1419. but above

  1420. all is the

  1421. path to

  1422. salvation and

  1423. to eternal

  1424. life.

  1425. So the

  1426. Lord's

  1427. path.

  1428. The second

  1429. thing we see

  1430. is the

  1431. Lord's

  1432. presence.

  1433. And we

  1434. have this

  1435. great assurance

  1436. here as

  1437. well, the

  1438. Lord's

  1439. presence.

  1440. And when we

  1441. look at this,

  1442. we do so

  1443. first of all

  1444. looking at the

  1445. situation where

  1446. we find the

  1447. Lord.

  1448. As he sent

  1449. them on,

  1450. he sent

  1451. them ahead

  1452. to the

  1453. other side

  1454. to Bethsaida,

  1455. he's dismissed

  1456. the crowd,

  1457. and he's

  1458. gone up the

  1459. mountain to

  1460. pray.

  1461. Jesus lets

  1462. the disciples

  1463. go, and

  1464. he goes to

  1465. pray.

  1466. Is he

  1467. leaving the

  1468. disciples?

  1469. Has he just

  1470. left them to

  1471. go?

  1472. Or is there

  1473. a reminder to

  1474. us here of

  1475. where he is

  1476. even now?

  1477. praying?

  1478. In the

  1479. gospel of

  1480. Mark, there

  1481. are three

  1482. times when

  1483. Jesus is

  1484. mentioned

  1485. praying.

  1486. In chapter

  1487. one, at the

  1488. beginning of

  1489. his ministry,

  1490. here in this

  1491. chapter, and

  1492. in chapter

  1493. 14 in

  1494. Gethsemane,

  1495. in each he is

  1496. alone, in

  1497. each the

  1498. disciples are

  1499. in the

  1500. vicinity, and

  1501. in each they

  1502. do not

  1503. understand, or

  1504. they're afraid.

  1505. And yet

  1506. he's praying.

  1507. I wonder, was

  1508. he praying for

  1509. them?

  1510. We know in

  1511. John 17 that

  1512. Jesus prays for

  1513. his people, he

  1514. prays for us.

  1515. And you

  1516. wonder here if

  1517. that prayer that

  1518. he was offering

  1519. up was,

  1520. Father, teach

  1521. these disciples

  1522. through this

  1523. experience.

  1524. May they see

  1525. your glory.

  1526. May they know

  1527. your presence.

  1528. We don't know,

  1529. it's not recorded

  1530. for us.

  1531. But that prayer

  1532. in John 17

  1533. certainly makes

  1534. it clear to

  1535. us that he

  1536. prays for

  1537. his own.

  1538. And here we

  1539. have this

  1540. reminder too

  1541. for ourselves

  1542. that even we

  1543. are going

  1544. through times

  1545. of trial

  1546. and challenge.

  1547. Where is

  1548. he now?

  1549. He is at the

  1550. right hand of

  1551. God, and

  1552. what is he

  1553. doing?

  1554. He's making

  1555. intercession for

  1556. his people.

  1557. Even as we

  1558. offer up our

  1559. cries and our

  1560. prayers, Jesus

  1561. is the one

  1562. who is

  1563. interceding

  1564. for us.

  1565. And so he

  1566. was one who

  1567. prayed, showing

  1568. us our need

  1569. to pray, that

  1570. we are dependent

  1571. on God for

  1572. all things.

  1573. It's a lesson

  1574. and a reminder

  1575. to us, a

  1576. lesson to have

  1577. our own times

  1578. alone with the

  1579. Lord because we

  1580. do face all

  1581. these trials.

  1582. But it's to be

  1583. in the presence

  1584. of our Lord

  1585. as we do

  1586. so.

  1587. And it's a

  1588. reminder too

  1589. that as Jesus

  1590. was dependent

  1591. on the

  1592. Father, so

  1593. are we.

  1594. We do

  1595. nothing by

  1596. ourselves.

  1597. And that's a

  1598. reminder, but

  1599. it's also a

  1600. blessing.

  1601. We don't have

  1602. to face up to

  1603. anything by

  1604. ourselves.

  1605. Whatever it

  1606. is, we go

  1607. through it knowing

  1608. that there is

  1609. prayer there to

  1610. the Father in

  1611. heaven who is

  1612. able to help.

  1613. help.

  1614. And so it

  1615. seems he was

  1616. at a distance,

  1617. but he was

  1618. close, and

  1619. he is close to

  1620. us as well.

  1621. And even

  1622. though he had

  1623. sent his

  1624. disciples, he

  1625. had not

  1626. forgotten

  1627. them.

  1628. And you

  1629. see that in

  1630. verse 48.

  1631. He saw that

  1632. they were

  1633. making headway

  1634. painfully for

  1635. the wind was

  1636. against them.

  1637. He was aware.

  1638. He knew what

  1639. was happening

  1640. to them.

  1641. He knew their

  1642. situation.

  1643. like he knows

  1644. yours and

  1645. mine too.

  1646. He knows

  1647. everything that's

  1648. going on.

  1649. And he was

  1650. aware they

  1651. were in

  1652. trouble, and

  1653. he came to

  1654. their aid.

  1655. But isn't it

  1656. strange what it

  1657. says?

  1658. They were

  1659. making headway

  1660. painfully for

  1661. the wind was

  1662. against them, and

  1663. about the fourth

  1664. watch of the

  1665. night, he came

  1666. to them walking

  1667. on the sea.

  1668. He meant to

  1669. pass by them.

  1670. It seems a

  1671. bit odd.

  1672. He meant to

  1673. pass by them.

  1674. Had he

  1675. changed his

  1676. mind?

  1677. Had he

  1678. thought they're

  1679. being disobedient,

  1680. they're not

  1681. listening, I'm

  1682. just going to

  1683. go past them?

  1684. What was he

  1685. doing here?

  1686. Was he not

  1687. concerned about

  1688. them?

  1689. Or was there

  1690. more to this?

  1691. He made to

  1692. pass by them.

  1693. There was

  1694. revelation in

  1695. this.

  1696. they were to

  1697. see who he

  1698. was and what

  1699. he was doing.

  1700. Some people

  1701. have tried to

  1702. put this down

  1703. as the walking

  1704. on the sea,

  1705. that the

  1706. disciples were

  1707. tired, it was

  1708. late at night,

  1709. they thought they

  1710. saw him walking

  1711. on the sea, but

  1712. he was actually

  1713. on the land.

  1714. No.

  1715. Others have

  1716. said, oh, there

  1717. must have been a

  1718. shallow part, a

  1719. sandbar, the

  1720. water was very

  1721. shallow, he was

  1722. just walking on

  1723. that.

  1724. No.

  1725. He was walking

  1726. on the sea, and

  1727. he made to

  1728. pass by.

  1729. What was he

  1730. doing here?

  1731. He was showing

  1732. who it was that

  1733. was with them.

  1734. When you go

  1735. back to the

  1736. Old Testament,

  1737. to Exodus

    Exodus 33:19–23

  1738. 33, verse 19

  1739. to 23, there

  1740. you see the

  1741. word pass by

  1742. used again, and

  1743. the phrase is

  1744. used to

  1745. describe God

  1746. revealing himself

  1747. to Moses as

  1748. he passed

  1749. by.

  1750. And here

  1751. is Jesus

  1752. making us

  1753. to pass

  1754. by, that

  1755. they might

  1756. see his

  1757. glory, that

  1758. they might

  1759. know who

  1760. it is that

  1761. is with

  1762. them, that

  1763. it's not

  1764. just on the

  1765. land he's

  1766. walking on,

  1767. on a

  1768. sandbar, that

  1769. Jesus has

  1770. power and

  1771. authority over

  1772. all things.

  1773. He is walking

  1774. on the water,

  1775. and he is

  1776. there for

  1777. them, and

  1778. then he

  1779. comes into

  1780. the boat

  1781. with them.

  1782. It's a

  1783. reminder to

  1784. the disciples,

  1785. they won't

  1786. always have

  1787. Jesus in a

  1788. physical way,

  1789. but that he's

  1790. always going to

  1791. be with them.

  1792. We have

  1793. God the

  1794. Lord on

  1795. our side.

  1796. Even as we

  1797. sang in

  1798. Psalm 23,

  1799. there's these

  1800. great words of

  1801. the Lord being

  1802. with his

  1803. people.

  1804. Verse 2

  1805. gives that

  1806. image of

  1807. the green

  1808. pastures and

  1809. the calm

  1810. waters, and

  1811. a lovely

  1812. calm setting.

  1813. But then

  1814. you have

  1815. verse 3

  1816. and 4

  1817. that remind

  1818. us that

  1819. even in

  1820. the valley

  1821. of the

  1822. shadow of

  1823. death, he

  1824. is there

  1825. for his

  1826. people.

  1827. His rod

  1828. and his

  1829. staff, they

  1830. comfort.

  1831. So the

  1832. Lord is

  1833. there.

  1834. God is

  1835. with us.

  1836. That's his

  1837. promise.

  1838. Never will

  1839. I leave

  1840. you, never

  1841. will I

  1842. forsake

  1843. you.

  1844. Thomas, when

  1845. he saw the

  1846. risen Lord,

  1847. he said he

  1848. would not

  1849. believe unless

  1850. he saw the

  1851. marks on his

  1852. hands and

  1853. the side.

  1854. But what

  1855. did Jesus

  1856. say to

  1857. him when

  1858. he believed?

  1859. Because you

  1860. have seen

  1861. me, you

  1862. have believed.

  1863. Blessed are

  1864. those who

  1865. have not

  1866. seen and

  1867. yet have

  1868. believed.

  1869. Do these

  1870. things make

  1871. you afraid

  1872. of Jesus?

  1873. He can't

  1874. walk on

  1875. water, he

  1876. can't feed

  1877. 5,000, he

  1878. can't calm

  1879. a storm, the

  1880. wind and the

  1881. waves.

  1882. Well, he

  1883. can.

  1884. That's the

  1885. truth we

  1886. hear.

  1887. But do we

  1888. believe it?

  1889. That's the

  1890. question.

  1891. So the

  1892. Lord's

  1893. presence is

  1894. there for

  1895. us.

  1896. What a

  1897. wonderful

  1898. assurance we

  1899. have that

  1900. he is

  1901. there for

  1902. his people.

  1903. And he

  1904. is there

  1905. for you.

  1906. Do not

  1907. be afraid,

  1908. but believe.

  1909. Believe in

  1910. the Lord

  1911. Jesus.

  1912. Jesus.

  1913. Well, the

  1914. third and

  1915. final thing

  1916. we see

  1917. here is

  1918. the Lord's

  1919. prompting.

  1920. The Lord's

  1921. prompting.

  1922. Fear can

  1923. often lead

  1924. us to

  1925. missing

  1926. what's

  1927. important.

  1928. And the

  1929. disciples

  1930. here, yes,

  1931. they were

  1932. terrified, but

  1933. Jesus spoke

  1934. to them there

  1935. in verse 50

  1936. saying,

  1937. take heart,

  1938. it is I,

  1939. do not be

  1940. afraid.

  1941. The Lord

  1942. prompts them

  1943. here.

  1944. You fear

  1945. so much,

  1946. you're afraid

  1947. even of me.

  1948. Do not

  1949. be afraid.

  1950. See who

  1951. it is.

  1952. It is I.

  1953. I am.

  1954. I am the

  1955. Lord who

  1956. is with

  1957. you.

  1958. And he's

  1959. prompting

  1960. them in

  1961. their hearts

  1962. to believing.

  1963. Take

  1964. heart.

  1965. And they

  1966. were astounded,

  1967. utterly

  1968. astounded,

  1969. it says

  1970. there in

  1971. verse 51.

  1972. And they

  1973. were growing

  1974. in their

  1975. knowledge of

  1976. Jesus and

  1977. their

  1978. understanding

  1979. of who

  1980. he is.

  1981. we may

  1982. be believers

  1983. in our

  1984. hearts,

  1985. but our

  1986. hearts are

  1987. still hardened

  1988. at times,

  1989. as we see

  1990. here in

  1991. verse 52.

  1992. Our hearts

  1993. are hardened

  1994. by things

  1995. that go on

  1996. and our

  1997. experience

  1998. and our

  1999. own

  2000. sinfulness.

  2001. All of

  2002. these things

  2003. leave us

  2004. hardened,

  2005. but we

  2006. should be

  2007. utterly

  2008. astounded

  2009. by what

  2010. God is

  2011. saying to

  2012. us.

  2013. We don't

  2014. always

  2015. understand,

  2016. but here

  2017. is Jesus,

  2018. the Son of

  2019. God,

  2020. revealing

  2021. himself

  2022. to us.

  2023. He had

  2024. come to

  2025. them,

  2026. as it

  2027. says here,

  2028. by walking

  2029. on the

  2030. sea.

  2031. And Psalm

    Psalms 77:19

  2032. 77,

  2033. verse 19,

  2034. it says

  2035. there,

  2036. your way

  2037. was through

  2038. the sea,

  2039. your path

  2040. through the

  2041. great waters,

  2042. yet your

  2043. footprints

  2044. were unseen.

  2045. It's

  2046. almost like

  2047. for this

  2048. occasion,

  2049. that Psalm

  2050. footprints

  2051. they couldn't

  2052. see,

  2053. but he

  2054. was there

  2055. with them.

  2056. The Lord

  2057. is prompting

  2058. them,

  2059. prompting

  2060. them through

  2061. his word

  2062. and through

  2063. his presence

  2064. to lean

  2065. upon him,

  2066. to not

  2067. be afraid,

  2068. but to

  2069. listen to

  2070. him.

  2071. And this

  2072. was not

  2073. just a

  2074. word for

  2075. this one

  2076. occasion.

  2077. Take

  2078. heart,

  2079. as I do

  2080. not be

  2081. afraid,

  2082. was for

  2083. this day

  2084. onwards.

  2085. And his

  2086. promise to

  2087. always be

  2088. with them

  2089. and to be

  2090. with all

  2091. his people,

  2092. for all

  2093. their future,

  2094. all their

  2095. eternity,

  2096. he would

  2097. be there

  2098. with them.

  2099. But when

  2100. we look at

  2101. Jesus,

  2102. he has

  2103. our future

  2104. proofed

  2105. entirely.

  2106. For any

  2107. change,

  2108. for anything

  2109. that comes

  2110. our way,

  2111. he's got

  2112. it covered.

  2113. He is

  2114. ever

  2115. enough.

  2116. There is

  2117. no situation

  2118. that arises

  2119. that's out of

  2120. his control.

  2121. There's no

  2122. time in

  2123. our life

  2124. that we

  2125. go through

  2126. that he's

  2127. not there

  2128. for us.

  2129. Everything

  2130. is there,

  2131. whether it's

  2132. personally,

  2133. collectively,

  2134. even as we

  2135. think of the

  2136. world in

  2137. which we

  2138. live in,

  2139. the chaos

  2140. that we

  2141. see all

  2142. around us,

  2143. he is

  2144. still enough.

  2145. He is

  2146. all we

  2147. need.

  2148. He alone

  2149. is to

  2150. be our

  2151. hope,

  2152. our refuge,

  2153. our security,

  2154. all of

  2155. these things.

  2156. And yet

  2157. still,

  2158. we're

  2159. afraid.

  2160. We're

  2161. afraid

  2162. what people

  2163. might say,

  2164. what people

  2165. might think.

  2166. We're

  2167. afraid of

  2168. letting him

  2169. down.

  2170. We're

  2171. afraid of

  2172. going

  2173. forward

  2174. in

  2175. faith

  2176. because

  2177. we're

  2178. fearful.

  2179. It's

  2180. better to

  2181. be afraid

  2182. of the

  2183. consequences

  2184. of naught

  2185. and to

  2186. come

  2187. and follow

  2188. him.

  2189. He

  2190. says,

  2191. take heart

  2192. at his

  2193. eye.

  2194. Do not

  2195. be afraid.

  2196. And he

  2197. speaks that

  2198. word to

  2199. us today

  2200. as well.

  2201. Don't be

  2202. afraid to

  2203. follow

  2204. Jesus.

  2205. The paths

  2206. may not

  2207. always be

  2208. straightforward,

  2209. but it's

  2210. better to be

  2211. on his

  2212. path,

  2213. the narrow

  2214. way that

  2215. leads to

  2216. eternal life

  2217. and the

  2218. broad road

  2219. that leads

  2220. to destruction.

  2221. You have

  2222. the promise

  2223. of his

  2224. presence.

  2225. presence.

  2226. He sees,

  2227. he knows,

  2228. he prays,

  2229. and he's

  2230. with you.

  2231. And that

  2232. is what he

  2233. is prompting

  2234. us with

  2235. today,

  2236. to go

  2237. his way,

  2238. to follow

  2239. him,

  2240. not to be

  2241. afraid,

  2242. but to

  2243. have faith

  2244. and to

  2245. go with

  2246. him.

  2247. Are you

  2248. good at

  2249. listening?

  2250. Because

  2251. God the

  2252. Lord is

  2253. speaking,

  2254. and we

  2255. are to

  2256. follow him.

  2257. Let's

  2258. pray.

  2259. Lord,

  2260. our

  2261. gracious

  2262. God,

  2263. we thank

  2264. you that

  2265. your word

  2266. is a

  2267. living word,

  2268. and we

  2269. pray that

  2270. you will

  2271. take it to

  2272. our hearts

  2273. today,

  2274. and that

  2275. you will

  2276. apply these

  2277. truths of

  2278. our need

  2279. to listen,

  2280. even in the

  2281. midst of

  2282. our fear

  2283. and our

  2284. anxieties

  2285. and all

  2286. that troubles

  2287. us,

  2288. that,

  2289. Lord,

  2290. we would

  2291. come to

  2292. recognize

  2293. that you

  2294. are with

  2295. us,

  2296. and that

  2297. you are

  2298. for us.

  2299. So help

  2300. us to

  2301. be a

  2302. people of

  2303. faith,

  2304. leaning upon

  2305. you for

  2306. all of

  2307. these things,

  2308. as we

  2309. ask it

  2310. in Jesus'

  2311. name.

  2312. Amen.

  2313. We're

  2314. going to

  2315. conclude by

  2316. singing in

  2317. Psalm 34.

  2318. We'll sing

  2319. from verse

  2320. 8 to

  2321. 11.

  2322. Psalm 34.

  2323. Come

  2324. taste and

  2325. see the

  2326. Lord is

  2327. good,

  2328. who

  2329. trusts in

  2330. him,

  2331. is

  2332. blessed.

  2333. Oh,

  2334. fear the

  2335. Lord,

  2336. your

  2337. saints

  2338. with

  2339. need,

  2340. you

  2341. will

  2342. not

  2343. be

  2344. oppressed.

  2345. Then

  2346. verse 11,

  2347. it says,

  2348. come here,

  2349. my children,

  2350. gather round

  2351. and listen

  2352. to my

  2353. word,

  2354. and I

  2355. will help

  2356. you understand

  2357. how you

  2358. may fear

  2359. the Lord.

  2360. We'll sing

  2361. from verse

  2362. 8 to 11,

  2363. we stand

  2364. to sing

  2365. to God's

  2366. praise.

  2367. Amen.

2368. The Lord is true, you trust in His best.

2369. Oh, fear the Lord, you saints with me, you will not be offended.

2370. And thy odds may grow weak and faint and hunger for their good.

2371. But those who wait upon the Lord will not lack any good.

2372. Come here, my children, gather round and listen to my word.

2373. And I will help you understand how you may fear the Lord.

  2374. Amen.

2375. After the benediction, I'll go to the main door.

  2376. We'll close the benediction.

2377. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore.

  2378. Amen.

  2379. Amen.

  2380. dethъ

  2381. Amen.

  2382. Thank you.

  2383. Thank you.
