  1. I'm delighted again this evening to welcome Reverend Colin Dow to the pulpit.

  2. ! He was saying this morning he was here as a student placement 24 years ago.

  3. ! So some of you will remember him, I'm sure.

  29. I'll extort it all my days.

  30. I'll I live to God my Savior.

  31. From my heart I will sing praise.

  32. God, who do trust in princes?

  33. Mortal men who cannot say.

  34. All their plans will come to nothing.

  35. When they perish in the grave.

  36. Blessed is the one who truly looks for heaven.

  37. To Jacob's God.

  38. Blessed is the one who places all his hope upon the Lord.

  39. He who made the earth and heaven.

  40. And the sea split all their store.

  41. He who gives his heavenly promise.

  42. He who is faithful evermore.

  43. He delivers from oppression.

  44. And relieves the hungry's might.

  45. He releases those in prison.

  46. To the life the Lord gives sight.

  47. He who does not know.

  48. He who does not know.

  49. He who does not know.

  50. He who does not know.

  51. He who does not know.

  52. He who does not know.

  53. He who does not know.

  54. He who does not know.

  55. He who does not know.

  56. He who does not know.

  57. He who does not know.

  58. He who does not know.

  59. He who does not know.

  60. He who does not know.

  61. He who does not know.

  62. He who does not know.

  63. He who does not know.

  64. He who does not know.

  65. He who does not know.

  66. He who does not know.

  67. He who does not know.

  68. He who does not know.

  69. He who does not know.

  70. He who does not know.

  71. He who does not know.

  72. Let us pray.

  73. O Lord our God, we join with the psalmist

  74. in calling upon our souls to praise you

  75. and to extol you all the days of our lives.

  76. For you are God, our Savior.

  77. You are the one who made the heaven and the earth,

  78. the sea with all its store.

  79. You are the one who keeps every promise.

  80. You are the one who is faithful.

  81. You are the one who delivers us from oppression

  82. and relieves the plight of the hungry,

  83. who releases those in prison and gives the blind their sight.

  84. You are the one who raises those who are bowed down.

  85. For you, O Lord, delight in righteousness,

  86. protecting and caring for strangers,

  87. for the widow and for the fatherless.

  88. You are the one who frustrates the purposes of the wicked.

  89. You reign to every generation, O Lord.

  90. For over a hundred years,

  91. the message of your sovereignty has been proclaimed from this pulpit.

  92. That our God reigns.

  93. You reign then, you reign still.

  94. You will always reign as King and Lord.

  95. And so our souls praise you.

  96. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

  97. one true and living God,

  98. help me worship you for who you are

  99. and for all that you have done.

  100. Our relentless Redeemer.

  101. We thank you that you have demonstrated

  102. your love for us in this.

  103. While we were yet sinners,

  104. Christ died for us.

  105. The word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  106. We have beheld his glory.

  107. How then do we see the glory

  108. of God on the cross?

  109. If it is not that your own Son,

  110. O Lord our Father,

  111. was humiliated

  112. and crucified in our place,

  113. bearing the punishment our sin deserved,

  114. bearing shame and scoffing rude,

  115. in my place condemned he stood,

  116. sealed my pardon with his blood.

  117. Hallelujah.

  118. What a Savior.

  119. We draw near to you tonight

  120. in the name of Jesus

  121. as your people.

  122. We thank you for the faith

  123. that you have given us,

  124. for even the faith

  125. by which we are saved

  126. is a gift from yourself.

  127. Lord, we may have small faith,

  128. we may have great faith.

  129. It's not our faith that counts,

  130. but the one in whom we have faith.

  131. We thank you that you, O Lord,

  132. are forever committed to us

  133. in love and covenant promise.

  134. You have said,

  135. I will never leave you,

  136. I will never forsake you.

  137. Behold, I am with you

  138. to the very end of the age.

  139. Our Lord God and loving Heavenly Father,

  140. we pray that you would comfort

  141. those in distress.

  142. We pray that you would give hope

  143. to those in despair.

  144. We pray that you would give strength

  145. to those who are exhausted.

  146. We pray that you would give joy

  147. to those who are depressed.

  148. We pray that you would give serenity

  149. to those who are anxious.

  150. We thank you that you are

  151. the God of our hearts,

  152. the God who overcomes our hearts

  153. and is greater than our hearts.

  154. We pray that you would speak truth

  155. to us this evening.

  156. We pray for our church here.

  157. We ask that you would

  158. open the floodgates of heaven

  159. and send your spirit

  160. to begin a movement

  161. in these islands once again

  162. that would cause people

  163. to fill the church,

  164. to rush into the church,

  165. eager to hear the good news

  166. of Jesus Christ and be saved.

  167. We pray, Lord,

  168. that you would do a work

  169. here in Kenneth Street.

  170. Once again, Lord,

  171. we thank you for Callum Smith here.

  172. We thank you for Callum

  173. for his gifting

  174. and for his godliness.

  175. We thank you for the way

  176. that he shepherds

  177. and cares for this congregation.

  178. We pray that you would bless him

  179. and Johan and the family

  180. richly

  181. in their ministry among us.

  182. and we pray, Lord,

  183. that as he looks for a colleague

  184. and as we look for a colleague

  185. that you would give us

  186. unanimity of heart and spirit,

  187. focusing our minds

  188. upon what you would have for us,

  189. not upon what our

  190. personal preferences may be.

  191. We pray for our denomination

  192. as a whole.

  193. We ask, Lord,

  194. that you would help us

  195. to remain faithful

  196. to your word.

  197. We do not stand

  198. on the laurels of our heritage.

  199. As much as we look forward

  200. to a dynamic future

  201. of your blessing.

  202. We pray for the growth

  203. of the church

  204. all over Scotland.

  205. Lord, we ask

  206. that you would work powerfully

  207. in every pulpit

  208. from which your word

  209. is preached this evening.

  210. We remember the missionary

  211. endeavour of your church

  212. all over the world.

  213. We thank you for the growth

  214. of your church

  215. in many nations.

  216. We also remember

  217. those nations

  218. where there's

  219. great challenge.

  220. We remember the nation

  221. of Japan

  222. where a tiny church

  223. is faced with

  224. further decline.

  225. We pray for your people

  226. there

  227. in that

  228. highly populated country,

  229. technologically advanced

  230. and yet spiritually dead.

  231. Lord,

  232. will you not open

  233. the floodgates of heaven

  234. and pour down

  235. your spirit

  236. upon that great nation?

  237. We pray, O Lord,

  238. for our world.

  239. We ask, Lord,

  240. that you would make

  241. wars to cease,

  242. that you would frustrate

  243. the purposes

  244. of wicked men,

  245. that you would relieve

  246. the plight of the oppressed

  247. !

  248. And the hungry.

  249. And Lord,

  250. we pray for

  251. our politicians

  252. and those

  253. in authority over us.

  254. We especially

  255. remember them

  256. as they debate

  257. the proposed

  258. euthanasia bill.

  259. And we ask, O Lord,

  260. that your word

  261. would take

  262. front and centre

  263. in all

  264. of their decisions.

  265. Lord,

  266. we ask and pray

  267. for this bill

  268. not to go forward,

  269. for it to be defeated

  270. in both

  271. Holyrood and Westminster.

  272. And we ask that

  273. rather than ending life,

  274. which is your prerogative,

  275. you would help us

  276. to invest our

  277. care and resource

  278. and money

  279. in preserving life

  280. and giving dignity

  281. to those

  282. who are dying.

  283. And Lord,

  284. we consider now

  285. our own personal needs.

  286. We are hungry

  287. for your word

  288. this evening.

  289. That's why we're here.

  290. So will you fill us

  291. with a new vision

  292. of Jesus Christ?

  293. But Lord,

  294. there may be some

  295. among us here

  296. this evening

  297. who do not yet know you,

  298. who are here

  299. by force of habit,

  300. or because they have been

  301. forced to be here

  302. by their parents

  303. or by peer pressure.

  304. But do not know you.

  305. They have not yet

  306. discovered

  307. the great meaning

  308. of life

  309. and the pearl

  310. of great price

  311. that is to be found

  312. in Jesus Christ.

  313. Lord,

  314. will your spirit

  315. do a work among us

  316. this evening

  317. that breaks open

  318. the hardness

  319. of our hearts?

  320. will your spirit

  321. do a miracle

  322. of grace

  323. within us

  324. this evening

  325. to transform

  326. our hearts

  327. of stone

  328. into hearts

  329. of flesh?

  330. Help us all,

  331. O Lord,

  332. this evening

  333. as we come

  334. to come

  335. with that attitude

  336. of those Gentiles

  337. who came to the disciples

  338. saying,

  339. Sir,

  340. we would see Jesus.

  341. Now we ask

  342. all these things

  343. with the forgiveness

  344. of our sin

  345. in Jesus' name.

  346. Amen.

  347. We're going to sing again

  348. this time in Psalm 1.

  349. This is on page

  350. number 200.

  351. It's from the

  352. Scottish Psalter.

  353. Psalm 1.

  354. That man

  355. hath perfect blessedness

  356. who walketh

  357. not astray

  358. in counsel

  359. of ungodly men

  360. nor stands

  361. in sinner's way.

  362. nor sitteth

  363. in the scorner's chair.

  364. But placeth

  365. his delight

  366. upon God's law

  367. and meditates

  368. on his law

  369. day and night.

  370. Psalm 1,

  371. the whole psalm

  372. to God's praise.

  373. best best best

  374. nor stands in sinners' way.

  375. Lord sitteth in the scorners' ship,

  376. and raiseth his delight.

  377. At most grog, so grog, so grog, so grog,

  378. so grog, so grog, so grog, so grog, so grog,

  379. We shall be like a tree that goes near planted by our earth.

  380. Which in this season yields its fruit, and its sweet faith ever.

  381. And only thou shalt prosper well, now with it are not so.

  382. But like they are bound to virtue, which when right to our goal.

  383. In judgment therefore shall most and such as the God we are.

  384. Nor in the assembly of the earth shall we yet men appear.

  385. For while the way of God remain, unto the Lord is Lord.

  386. Where as the way of the earth shall white be overgrown.

  387. We are going to read now in God's word from the book of 2 Corinthians chapter 13.

    2 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  388. 2 Corinthians chapter 13.

    2 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  389. 2 Corinthians chapter 13.

    2 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  390. This is the word of God.

  391. This is the third time I am coming to you.

  392. Every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

  393. I warn those who sinned before and all the others.

  394. And I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit.

  395. That if I come again I will not spare them.

  396. Since you seek proof that Christ is speaking in me.

  397. He is not weak in dealing with you.

  398. But is powerful among you.

  399. For he was crucified in weakness.

  400. For he lives by the power of God.

  401. For we also are weak in him.

  402. But in dealing with you.

  403. We will live with him by the power of God.

  404. Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.

  405. Test yourselves.

  406. Or do you not realize this about yourselves.

  407. That Jesus Christ is in you.

  408. Unless indeed you fail to meet the test.

  409. I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test.

  410. But we pray to God that you may do no wrong.

  411. That not that we may appear to have met the test.

  412. But that you may do what is right.

  413. Though we may seem to have failed.

  414. For we cannot do anything against the truth.

  415. But only for the truth.

  416. For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong.

  417. Your restoration is what we pray for.

  418. For this reason I write these things while I am away from you.

  419. So that when I come.

  420. I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority.

  421. That the Lord has given me for building up.

  422. And not for tearing down.

  423. Finally brothers.

  424. Rejoice.

  425. Aim for restoration.

  426. Comfort one another.

  427. Agree with one another.

  428. Live in peace.

  429. And the God of love and peace will be with you.

  430. Greet one another with a holy kiss.

  431. All the saints greet you.

  432. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  433. And the love of God.

  434. And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.

  435. Be with you all.

  436. This is the word of God.

  437. Before we turn back to that passage.

  438. We'll sing in Psalm 19.

  439. On page 23.

  440. Psalm 19.

  441. On page 23.

  442. From which we shall sing.

  443. Verses 7.

  444. To verse 14.

  445. Psalm 19.

  446. Page 23.

  447. From verse 7.

  448. The perfect law of God.

  449. Revives the soul of man.

  450. His statutes which are sure.

  451. Make wise the simple one.

  452. The precepts of the Lord are right.

  453. And fill the heart.

  454. With great delight.

  455. Let's sing Psalm 19.

  456. From verse 7 to the end.

  457. To God's praise.

  458. The perfect law of God.

  459. Revives the soul of man.

  460. His statutes which are sure.

  461. Make wise the simple one.

  462. The precepts of the Lord are right.

  463. And fill the heart with great delight.

  464. God's praise.

  465. For great, the earth commands.

  466. Share light on what we see.

  467. The fear of God is pure.

  468. At last eternally.

  469. The standards of the Lord express.

  470. His perfect truth and righteousness.

  471. The power of God is pure.

  472. The power of God is pure.

  473. The power of God is pure.

  474. The power of God is pure.

  475. The power of God is pure.

  476. The power of God is pure.

  477. You can discern His cause, forgive my hidden sin, keep me from willful deeds, may they not rule within.

  478. And then I shall be free from blame and guiltless of transgressions.

  479. Lord, let the words I speak, be pleasing in Your sight, and may my endless thoughts be in Your judgment right.

  480. O Lord, You are the rock to me, You have redeemed and sent me free.

  481. May I begin by once again thanking you from the bottom of my heart for the welcome that myself and my family have received this weekend up here.

  482. It's been wonderful for Kathmer and myself to renew friendships.

  483. You don't seem to have changed one little bit in the last 24 years.

  484. As I said this morning, I have far less hair and far more children than I had back then.

  485. But you don't seem to have changed at all, except the man standing beside me, Callum Smith.

  486. He is your minister now.

  487. My first experience of Callum was when he was inducted to Dumfries Free Church.

  488. And over the years, I felt very blessed to work with him on the presbytery.

  489. And it's wonderful to see him as your shepherd at this time.

  490. But of course, we pray for a colleague for him.

  491. Please turn with me back to 2 Corinthians chapter 13 and verse 14.

    2 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  492. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

  493. At the end of every service of worship, the presiding minister will raise his hands and pronounce the benediction.

  494. The word benediction literally means blessing or more literally to speak well.

  495. The minister on behalf of God dismisses God's people with his blessing upon them.

  496. The service concludes with the minister, or God rather, speaking well over his people.

  497. Pronouncing both his pleasure in them and his intention for them.

  498. His pleasure in them in that they are his children whom he loves, protects, and will provide for.

  499. And his intention to strengthen them for all the challenges which lie in the week ahead.

  500. So the benediction is an essential component in every Christian service of worship.

  501. It is the public announcement of God's blessing upon his people.

  502. As Christians, we are to listen carefully to the benediction.

  503. Recognizing it's for us.

  504. It's God's gift to us.

  505. It's God's words of pleasure and intention for us.

  506. Whatever issues I may be facing, whether grief or depression, whether joy or thankfulness, anxiety or doubt,

  507. be it peace or tranquility, God wants me to experience his pleasure in me as his child and his loving intention toward me.

  508. Now the benediction that I choose to use most often is this one taken from 2 Corinthians 13, 14.

  509. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

  510. Now we're tempted, are we not, because we've heard these words so often,

  511. not to think too deeply about what they mean.

  512. In truth, we're rather spoiled by them because there's a richness here which goes beyond anything the world can offer us.

  513. God blesses us not so much with grace, love and fellowship, although these are wonderful things.

  514. God blesses us with himself and in essence says to us,

  515. I will know you this week and you will know me this week.

  516. I'll be with you through all the trials of this week.

  517. Know this, my beloved child, I take great pleasure in you.

  518. I love you and I'll be with you always.

  519. Out of this benediction in 2 Corinthians 13, verse 14, we could say many things,

    2 Corinthians 13:14

  520. but I want to reflect this evening on just three.

  521. First of all, it tells us about God.

  522. Then it tells us about salvation.

  523. And then it tells us about prayer.

  524. Tells us about God, salvation and prayer.

  525. At the end of the service this evening, listen carefully to the good words of this benediction.

  526. They are for us as a Christian church.

  527. And they are for us as individual Christians.

  528. First of all then, these words tell us about God.

  529. These words tell us about God.

  530. My wife and I were privileged recently to travel down to Newcastle to attend a celebration for the ministry of Dr. Ian Hamilton.

  531. Known to many of us, Ian is an influential Christian pastor, writer and theologian.

  532. He has influenced many of us, myself included, for the good.

  533. And inspired us to be the best servants of Christ it's possible for us to be.

  534. At that celebration dinner, one of the speakers highlighted some of the distinctive emphases of Ian's preaching.

  535. And he read something that Ian had written some years ago.

  536. Ian wrote these words in a banner of Truth magazine.

  537. We as Christians worship one God in three persons.

  538. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  539. This is the chief and distinctive doctrine of the Christian faith.

  540. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity.

  541. It's a mysterious doctrine without any earthly pattern.

  542. But it's a doctrine we must believe if we are to call ourselves Christians.

  543. It's a doctrine clearly taught in the Bible even if the word Trinity is never used.

  544. We serve one God.

  545. But the Father is God.

  546. And the Son is God.

  547. And the Holy Spirit is God.

  548. The early fathers of the church, like Athanasius of Alexandria, stood firmly on the truth of the Trinity.

  549. This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the formulation of the Nicene Creed.

  550. The fundamental confession of the Christian faith.

  551. In my church, we'll be studying the Nicene Creed a little later this year.

  552. Athanasius was the key figure in its formulation.

  553. We may be familiar with some of the language of the Nicene Creed by virtue of the Christmas carol,

  554. O come all ye faithful, where in verse 2, it quotes verbatim some of the language of the Creed.

  555. The Apostles' Creed, O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

  556. The Apostles' Creed, for as valuable as it is, does not definitively declare the divinity either of Jesus as the Son nor of the Holy Spirit.

  557. As such, a Mormon or a Jehovah's Witness can recite the Apostles' Creed.

  558. But not the Nicene Creed.

  559. For in unmistakable terms, the Nicene Creed declares,

  560. The Son is God, the Father is God, and the Holy Spirit is God.

  561. They are not of a similar essence to God.

  562. They are the same.

  563. Later, the Nicene Creed declares,

  564. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

  565. With the Father and the Son, he is to be worshipped and glorified.

  566. People often ask whether Christians worship the same God as Muslims or Jews.

  567. The answer is an emphatic no.

  568. No.

  569. We believe in the divine trinity.

  570. It is the cardinal doctrine of our faith.

  571. Both Jews and Muslims worship a God who we may describe as a monad.

  572. One God, one person, who alone, eternally has been alone,

  573. and as alone, has nothing else other than himself to love.

  574. For the Christian, because God is trinity, love stands central to the being of God.

  575. The Father has always loved the Son and the Spirit, for they are not him.

  576. The Son has always loved the Father and the Spirit, for they are not him.

  577. And the Spirit has always loved the Father and the Son, for they are not him.

  578. Such a strong inner Trinitarian love allows that infinite, eternal, and unchangeable love

  579. each person of the Trinity has for the other to spill over into all he's created.

  580. It's the doctrine of the Trinity which allows the Apostle John to say,

  581. God is love.

  582. So to the answer of whether Christians worship the same God as Muslims, Jews, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses,

  583. the answer is an emphatic no.

  584. There is no common ground between the God of these religions.

  585. For their gods are monads, our God is divine Trinity, three in one.

  586. The God who offers himself to us in this blessing, this benediction,

  587. is the God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the fullness of his Trinitarian glory.

  588. The great church father, Gregory Nazianzus, beautifully said,

  589. No sooner do I conceive of the one, than I am illumined by the splendor of the three.

  590. No sooner do I distinguish him, than I am carried back to the one.

  591. No sooner do I conceive of the one.

  592. No sooner do I conceive of the one.

  593. It's a beautiful mystery.

  594. Don't feel threatened by it.

  595. Feel invited by it to participate,

  596. even as the overflow of each divine person's love for the other

  597. overflows into the life of the church

  598. and into the life of individual believers.

  599. Now one of Ian Hamilton's famous phrases is that

  600. every doctrine of the Christian faith must be practical

  601. or it's of no use.

  602. Every doctrine of the Christian faith must be practical.

  603. The doctrine of the Trinity is the cornerstone of our faith.

  604. So it's not surprising it is the most practical

  605. of all the doctrines of Christianity.

  606. What warrant do I have to believe

  607. that God loves me?

  608. How do I know that God loves me?

  609. When I've failed him,

  610. when I've backslidden,

  611. when I've become spiritually cold,

  612. when I've sunk into pits of depression and anxiety

  613. where I cannot but hate myself,

  614. when I've fallen away from him,

  615. what assurance do I have

  616. that God loves me?

  617. It is because

  618. by virtue of his being Trinity,

  619. God is love.

  620. It is more natural for him to love

  621. than it is for me to breathe.

  622. Among many other warrants,

  623. this is the most powerful,

  624. the eternal,

  625. infinite,

  626. and unchangeable

  627. inner Trinitarian love

  628. between Father,

  629. Son,

  630. and Spirit

  631. which overflows

  632. into our daily experience

  633. as Christians.

  634. Shall such love

  635. now hate me

  636. who it has loved

  637. since before I was born?

  638. Shall he now hate me?

  639. Shall such love

  640. cast me away now

  641. who it has held close

  642. to its heart

  643. since before the sun

  644. began to shine in the sky?

  645. Shall he?

  646. If I am united to Christ,

  647. the Father cannot look upon me,

  648. yes,

  649. even the ugly,

  650. messy,

  651. sinful me,

  652. without seeing

  653. the glorious righteousness

  654. of his Son,

  655. and he loves me.

  656. Furthermore,

  657. if the inner Trinitarian love

  658. of Father,

  659. Son,

  660. and Spirit

  661. has overflowed

  662. into my life,

  663. surely that love

  664. should overflow

  665. from my heart

  666. into the lives

  667. of others.

  668. Why do we bear

  669. with one another,

  670. forgive one another,

  671. and comfort one another?

  672. We do it

  673. because

  674. the love

  675. of a Father

  676. for a Son

  677. and the Spirit

  678. has flooded

  679. our hearts

  680. with the love

  681. of God,

  682. a love

  683. which spills

  684. over into

  685. our love

  686. for others.

  687. And so

  688. the Apostle John

  689. writes,

  690. Beloved,

  691. if God so loved us,

  692. then we

  693. ought to love

  694. one another.

  695. You see,

  696. this wonderful

  697. doctrine of the Trinity,

  698. far from being

  699. an abstract theological

  700. doctrine,

  701. is the most practical

  702. of all Christian doctrines.

  703. It serves

  704. as the foundation

  705. for all we are

  706. to believe

  707. concerning God

  708. and for our life

  709. together

  710. as Christians.

  711. When hands are raised

  712. at the end

  713. of the service

  714. and a blessing

  715. is pronounced,

  716. it's as if God

  717. himself is saying,

  718. Go,

  719. my children,

  720. live in love,

  721. even as the Father

  722. loves the Son

  723. and the Spirit

  724. and the Son

  725. loves the Father

  726. and the Spirit

  727. and the Spirit

  728. loves the Father

  729. and the Son.

  730. So this blessing

  731. tells us,

  732. first of all,

  733. something about God.

  734. Secondly,

  735. it tells us

  736. something about salvation.

  737. Tells us about salvation.

  738. This benediction

  739. is remarkable

  740. on many accounts

  741. but chief among them

  742. is what it tells us

  743. about the source

  744. and the means

  745. and the purpose

  746. of our salvation.

  747. Here we have

  748. the Christian gospel

  749. in miniature.

  750. The grace

  751. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  752. The love of God.

  753. The fellowship

  754. of the Holy Spirit.

  755. The source

  756. of our salvation

  757. is to be found

  758. in the love

  759. of God the Father.

  760. The source

  761. of our salvation

  762. is to be found

  763. in the love

  764. of God the Father.

  765. God so loved

  766. the world

  767. that he sent

  768. his only begotten

  769. Son.

  770. We wrongly

  771. attribute

  772. to God the Father

  773. the sternest

  774. of all the divine

  775. attributes.

  776. wrath,

  777. judgment,

  778. righteousness,

  779. etc.

  780. But time and again

  781. the Bible

  782. wants us to understand

  783. that the source

  784. of our salvation

  785. is to be found

  786. in the infinite,

  787. eternal,

  788. and unchangeable

  789. love of the Father.

  790. God,

  791. to be understood

  792. as the Father,

  793. demonstrated

  794. his love

  795. for us

  796. in this.

  797. While we were

  798. yet sinners,

  799. Christ died

  800. for us.

  801. God the Father

  802. is simply

  803. filled with love.

  804. In 1 John 3

    1 John 3:1

  805. verse 1,

  806. see what kind

  807. of love

  808. the Father

  809. hath lavished

  810. upon us

  811. that we should

  812. be called

  813. children of God

  814. and that is

  815. what we are.

  816. It's a love

  817. with no beginning

  818. and no end,

  819. no start

  820. and no finish.

  821. A love

  822. for us

  823. as infinite

  824. as God

  825. himself

  826. is infinite.

  827. It can't be

  828. measured

  829. or calculated

  830. not even

  831. by our actions.

  832. It's an

  833. unconditional

  834. love.

  835. No human

  836. love

  837. is unconditional

  838. but God's

  839. love for us

  840. carries no

  841. condition.

  842. If someone

  843. was to ask

  844. me this

  845. evening

  846. why I

  847. am a

  848. Christian,

  849. I could

  850. only answer

  851. I love

  852. him because

  853. he first

  854. loved me.

  855. And then

  856. if that

  857. someone

  858. was to

  859. explore with

  860. me why

  861. God loved

  862. me,

  863. all I can

  864. say is

  865. that God

  866. loves me

  867. not for

  868. any qualities

  869. I have,

  870. not for

  871. anything he

  872. can make

  873. out of me,

  874. but because

  875. it's in the

  876. nature of

  877. God the

  878. Father to

  879. love.

  880. Many of us

  881. are fond of

  882. the Christian

  883. singer-songwriter

  884. Stuart Townend,

  885. how deep

  886. the Father's

  887. love for us,

  888. how vast

  889. beyond

  890. all measure.

  891. if the

  892. love of

  893. God the

  894. Father is

  895. the

  896. source of

  897. our

  898. salvation as

  899. Christians,

  900. the grace

  901. of the

  902. Lord Jesus

  903. Christ is

  904. the means

  905. of our

  906. salvation.

  907. How our

  908. becoming

  909. Christians

  910. came about.

  911. The

  912. mechanism

  913. of our

  914. salvation

  915. is the

  916. grace of

  917. God in

  918. the Lord

  919. Jesus

  920. Christ.

  921. In

  922. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 8:9

  923. 8 verse

  924. 9,

  925. the apostle

  926. writes,

  927. you know

  928. the grace

  929. of our

  930. Lord Jesus

  931. Christ that

  932. though he

  933. was rich

  934. yet for

  935. our

  936. sakes he

  937. became

  938. poor so

  939. that you

  940. by his

  941. poverty

  942. might become

  943. rich.

  944. When we

  945. think of

  946. Jesus we

  947. cannot but

  948. think of

  949. the grace

  950. of God

  951. toward us.

  952. Because of

  953. Jesus we

  954. did not

  955. receive what

  956. we deserved.

  957. We received

  958. what we did

  959. not deserve.

  960. On account

  961. of our

  962. sins we

  963. deserved

  964. the

  965. condemnation

  966. of death

  967. but on

  968. the cross

  969. Jesus was

  970. punished

  971. for our

  972. sins and

  973. died to

  974. bear our

  975. condemnation.

  976. On account

  977. of our

  978. sins we

  979. did not

  980. deserve the

  981. riches of

  982. the mercy

  983. and glory

  984. of God

  985. but on

  986. the cross

  987. Jesus earned

  988. them all

  989. for us

  990. and has

  991. freely gifted

  992. them to

  993. us.

  994. Our

  995. salvation may

  996. have cost us

  997. nothing but

  998. it cost the

  999. glorious son

  1000. of God

  1001. his life

  1002. blood shed

  1003. on the

  1004. cross for

  1005. us.

  1006. What gift

  1007. of grace

  1008. is Jesus

  1009. my redeemer

  1010. that is no

  1011. more for

  1012. heaven now

  1013. to give.

  1014. Because of

  1015. Jesus Christ

  1016. I who

  1017. deserved to

  1018. die eternally

  1019. now by

  1020. faith in him

  1021. shall live

  1022. eternally in

  1023. the glory of

  1024. my heavenly

  1025. father.

  1026. because of

  1027. Jesus Christ

  1028. I whose

  1029. sins were

  1030. once as

  1031. crimson as

  1032. blood

  1033. now by

  1034. faith

  1035. wear the

  1036. white robe

  1037. of the

  1038. righteousness

  1039. of Christ.

  1040. Well if the

  1041. love of God

  1042. the father

  1043. is the

  1044. source of

  1045. our salvation

  1046. why we

  1047. are Christians

  1048. the grace

  1049. of the

  1050. Lord Jesus

  1051. Christ

  1052. the how

  1053. of our

  1054. becoming

  1055. salvation

  1056. the means

  1057. the

  1058. fellowship

  1059. of the

  1060. Holy

  1061. Spirit

  1062. is the

  1063. purpose

  1064. of our

  1065. becoming

  1066. Christians

  1067. the purpose

  1068. in the

  1069. upper room

  1070. discourse

  1071. in John

  1072. between

  1073. John 14

  1074. 17

  1075. Jesus

  1076. tells his

  1077. disciples

  1078. what will

  1079. happen to

  1080. them

  1081. after his

  1082. death and

  1083. resurrection

  1084. and he

  1085. says

  1086. I will

  1087. ask the

  1088. father

  1089. and he

  1090. will give

  1091. you another

  1092. helper

  1093. to be

  1094. with you

  1095. forever

  1096. even the

  1097. spirit of

  1098. truth

  1099. whom the

  1100. world cannot

  1101. receive

  1102. because it

  1103. neither sees

  1104. him nor

  1105. knows him

  1106. you know

  1107. him

  1108. for he

  1109. dwells

  1110. within you

  1111. and will

  1112. be in

  1113. you

  1114. later

  1115. Jesus

  1116. says

  1117. if anyone

  1118. loves me

  1119. he will

  1120. keep my

  1121. word

  1122. and my

  1123. father will

  1124. love him

  1125. and we

  1126. will come

  1127. to him

  1128. and make

  1129. our home

  1130. with him

  1131. in other

  1132. words

  1133. the Holy

  1134. Spirit

  1135. whom

  1136. when we

  1137. believe

  1138. the

  1139. father

  1140. sends

  1141. to live

  1142. within

  1143. us

  1144. is the

  1145. presence

  1146. of the

  1147. fullness

  1148. of the

  1149. triune

  1150. God

  1151. with us

  1152. in and

  1153. through the

  1154. Holy Spirit

  1155. we have

  1156. fellowship

  1157. with God

  1158. the father

  1159. God the

  1160. son

  1161. here then

  1162. is the

  1163. purpose of

  1164. our salvation

  1165. that we

  1166. may know

  1167. God

  1168. and have

  1169. fellowship

  1170. and communion

  1171. with him

  1172. in his

  1173. high priestly

  1174. prayer in

  1175. John 17

    John 17:3

  1176. verse 3

  1177. Jesus

  1178. describes

  1179. what eternal

  1180. life is

  1181. this is

  1182. eternal life

  1183. he says

  1184. that they

  1185. know you

  1186. the only

  1187. true God

  1188. and Jesus

  1189. Christ

  1190. whom you

  1191. have sent

  1192. God

  1193. when we

  1194. read these

  1195. words

  1196. the

  1197. fellowship

  1198. of the

  1199. Holy

  1200. Spirit

  1201. we are

  1202. to think

  1203. of how

  1204. the

  1205. Holy

  1206. Spirit

  1207. brings

  1208. to our

  1209. hearts

  1210. the glorious

  1211. knowledge

  1212. of the

  1213. fullness

  1214. of God

  1215. Father

  1216. Son

  1217. and Holy

  1218. Spirit

  1219. that is

  1220. why

  1221. this is

  1222. a

  1223. benediction

  1224. offering

  1225. us

  1226. Son

  1227. Father

  1228. and Spirit

  1229. one

  1230. God

  1231. oh yes

  1232. in this

  1233. blessing

  1234. God is

  1235. offering

  1236. us

  1237. grace

  1238. love

  1239. and

  1240. fellowship

  1241. but more

  1242. importantly

  1243. he is

  1244. offering us

  1245. himself

  1246. he is

  1247. saying to

  1248. us

  1249. I will

  1250. know you

  1251. and you

  1252. will know

  1253. me this

  1254. week

  1255. I'll be

  1256. with you

  1257. through all

  1258. the trials

  1259. of this

  1260. week

  1261. know this

  1262. my beloved

  1263. child

  1264. I take

  1265. great

  1266. pleasure

  1267. in you

  1268. and I

  1269. will be

  1270. with you

  1271. always

  1272. in the

  1273. raising of

  1274. hands

  1275. at the

  1276. end of

  1277. the

  1278. service

  1279. God

  1280. is

  1281. reminding

  1282. us

  1283. of the

  1284. purpose

  1285. of our

  1286. salvation

  1287. that

  1288. he

  1289. himself

  1290. shall

  1291. be our

  1292. inheritance

  1293. our

  1294. portion

  1295. and our

  1296. reward

  1297. not what

  1298. he gives

  1299. us

  1300. but

  1301. he

  1302. himself

  1303. what

  1304. does

  1305. any

  1306. lover

  1307. want

  1308. but

  1309. the

  1310. one

  1311. he

  1312. loves

  1313. he

  1314. doesn't

  1315. want

  1316. her

  1317. money

  1318. he

  1319. doesn't

  1320. want

  1321. her

  1322. gold

  1323. he

  1324. wants

  1325. her

  1326. the

  1327. triune

  1328. God

  1329. and the

  1330. mysterious

  1331. glory

  1332. of his

  1333. trinity

  1334. says to

  1335. us

  1336. you can

  1337. have

  1338. my

  1339. grace

  1340. and you

  1341. can

  1342. have

  1343. my

  1344. mercy

  1345. and you

  1346. can

  1347. have

  1348. my

  1349. fellowship

  1350. but more

  1351. than

  1352. anything

  1353. else

  1354. I

  1355. want

  1356. to

  1357. give

  1358. you

  1359. myself

  1360. God

  1361. goes

  1362. with us

  1363. into the

  1364. week that

  1365. lies ahead

  1366. God

  1367. in the

  1368. fullness

  1369. of all

  1370. he is

  1371. he goes

  1372. with us

  1373. and he

  1374. says I'll

  1375. never leave

  1376. you

  1377. no I'll

  1378. never forsake

  1379. you

  1380. tells us

  1381. about

  1382. salvation

  1383. well

  1384. finally

  1385. this

  1386. benediction

  1387. tells us

  1388. about

  1389. prayer

  1390. prayer

  1391. one of

  1392. my

  1393. senior

  1394. Christian

  1395. mentors

  1396. recently

  1397. gave me

  1398. a book

  1399. to read

  1400. it's

  1401. entitled

  1402. distinct

  1403. communion

  1404. and written

  1405. by

  1406. Dan

  1407. Peters

  1408. who some

  1409. of you

  1410. may

  1411. know

  1412. building

  1413. upon

  1414. the

  1415. work

  1416. of the

  1417. English

  1418. Puritan

  1419. John

  1420. Owen

  1421. in his

  1422. book

  1423. communion

  1424. with

  1425. God

  1426. which

  1427. some

  1428. of you

  1429. may

  1430. have

  1431. read

  1432. Dan

  1433. suggests

  1434. and

  1435. proves

  1436. from

  1437. scripture

  1438. and

  1439. historic

  1440. theology

  1441. that

  1442. we

  1443. as

  1444. Christians

  1445. can

  1446. enjoy

  1447. distinct

  1448. communion

  1449. with

  1450. each

  1451. person

  1452. of the

  1453. Holy

  1454. Trinity

  1455. that

  1456. depending

  1457. upon

  1458. our

  1459. situations

  1460. and

  1461. circumstances

  1462. we

  1463. may

  1464. pray

  1465. either

  1466. to

  1467. Father

  1468. to

  1469. Son

  1470. or

  1471. to

  1472. Holy

  1473. Spirit

  1474. Dan

  1475. seeing

  1476. something

  1477. very

  1478. important

  1479. in this

  1480. book

  1481. which

  1482. is

  1483. something

  1484. I

  1485. want

  1486. to

  1487. work

  1488. on

  1489. in

  1490. my

  1491. private

  1492. and

  1493. public

  1494. prayers

  1495. in

  1496. this

  1497. book

  1498. in

  1499. this

  1500. verse

  1501. we

  1502. read

  1503. the

  1504. grace

  1505. of

  1506. the

  1507. Lord

  1508. Jesus

  1509. Christ

  1510. and

  1511. the

  1512. love

  1513. of

  1514. God

  1515. and

  1516. the

  1517. fellowship

  1518. of

  1519. the

  1520. Holy

  1521. Spirit

  1522. be

  1523. with

  1524. you

  1525. all

  1526. the

  1527. triune

  1528. God

  1529. is

  1530. inviting

  1531. us

  1532. to

  1533. enjoy

  1534. his

  1535. grace

  1536. and

  1537. his

  1538. love

  1539. and

  1540. his

  1541. fellowship

  1542. but

  1543. under

  1544. the

  1545. inspiration

  1546. of

  1547. the

  1548. Holy

  1549. Spirit

  1550. Paul

  1551. is

  1552. choosing

  1553. his

  1554. words

  1555. very

  1556. carefully

  1557. he's

  1558. attributing

  1559. grace

  1560. to

  1561. the

  1562. Lord

  1563. Jesus

  1564. Christ

  1565. he's

  1566. attributing

  1567. love

  1568. to

  1569. God

  1570. the

  1571. Father

  1572. he's

  1573. attributing

  1574. fellowship

  1575. to

  1576. the

  1577. Holy

  1578. Spirit

  1579. it's

  1580. not

  1581. as if

  1582. we

  1583. can't

  1584. attribute

  1585. love

  1586. and

  1587. fellowship

  1588. to

  1589. the

  1590. Lord

  1591. Jesus

  1592. Christ

  1593. it's

  1594. not

  1595. as if

  1596. we

  1597. can't

  1598. attribute

  1599. grace

  1600. and

  1601. fellowship

  1602. to

  1603. God

  1604. the

  1605. Father

  1606. and

  1607. it's

  1608. not

  1609. as if

  1610. we

  1611. can't

  1612. attribute

  1613. grace

  1614. and

  1615. love

  1616. to

  1617. the

  1618. Holy

  1619. Spirit

  1620. but

  1621. under

  1622. the

  1623. inspiration

  1624. of

  1625. the

  1626. Holy

  1627. Spirit

  1628. in

  1629. this

  1630. verse

  1631. Paul

  1632. attributes

  1633. grace

  1634. to

  1635. the

  1636. Lord

  1637. Jesus

  1638. Christ

  1639. love

  1640. to

  1641. God

  1642. the

  1643. Father

  1644. and

  1645. fellowship

  1646. to

  1647. the

  1648. Holy

  1649. Spirit

  1650. remember

  1651. the

  1652. love

  1653. of

  1654. God

  1655. the

  1656. Father

  1657. is

  1658. the

  1659. source

  1660. of

  1661. our

  1662. salvation

  1663. the

  1664. grace

  1665. of

  1666. the

  1667. Lord

  1668. Jesus

  1669. Christ

  1670. is

  1671. the

  1672. means

  1673. of

  1674. our

  1675. salvation

  1676. and

  1677. the

  1678. fellowship

  1679. of

  1680. the

  1681. Holy

  1682. Spirit

  1683. is

  1684. the

  1685. purpose

  1686. of

  1687. our

  1688. salvation

  1689. surely

  1690. the

  1691. exactness

  1692. of

  1693. Paul's

  1694. words

  1695. together

  1696. with

  1697. the

  1698. meaning

  1699. for

  1700. our

  1701. salvation

  1702. opens

  1703. up

  1704. a

  1705. new

  1706. horizon

  1707. for

  1708. how

  1709. we

  1710. can

  1711. enjoy

  1712. distinct

  1713. communion

  1714. with

  1715. each

  1716. person

  1717. of

  1718. the

  1719. Trinity

  1720. if

  1721. I

  1722. feel

  1723. rejected

  1724. and

  1725. unloved

  1726. if

  1727. I'm

  1728. not

  1729. sure

  1730. whether

  1731. God

  1732. loves

  1733. me

  1734. or

  1735. not

  1736. I

  1737. can

  1738. address

  1739. my

  1740. prayers

  1741. to

  1742. God

  1743. the

  1744. Father

  1745. because

  1746. love

  1747. comes

  1748. from

  1749. him

  1750. if

  1751. I

  1752. feel

  1753. guilty

  1754. and

  1755. ashamed

  1756. not

  1757. at

  1758. all

  1759. convinced

  1760. of

  1761. my

  1762. right

  1763. to

  1764. eternal

  1765. life

  1766. I

  1767. can

  1768. address

  1769. my

  1770. prayers

  1771. to

  1772. God

  1773. the

  1774. Son

  1775. because

  1776. grace

  1777. comes

  1778. from

  1779. him

  1780. and

  1781. if

  1782. I

  1783. feel

  1784. distant

  1785. from

  1786. God

  1787. and

  1788. very

  1789. much

  1790. alone

  1791. not

  1792. at

  1793. all

  1794. sure

  1795. of

  1796. whether

  1797. I'll

  1798. ever

  1799. feel

  1800. close

  1801. to

  1802. him

  1803. ever

  1804. again

  1805. I

  1806. can

  1807. address

  1808. my

  1809. prayers

  1810. to

  1811. God

  1812. the

  1813. Holy

  1814. Spirit

  1815. because

  1816. fellowship

  1817. comes

  1818. from

  1819. him

  1820. if

  1821. my

  1822. problem

  1823. concerns

  1824. the

  1825. source

  1826. of

  1827. salvation

  1828. I

  1829. can

  1830. take

  1831. it

  1832. to

  1833. God

  1834. the

  1835. Father

  1836. in

  1837. prayer

  1838. if

  1839. it

  1840. concerns

  1841. the

  1842. means

  1843. of

  1844. salvation

  1845. I

  1846. can

  1847. take

  1848. it

  1849. to

  1850. the

  1851. Lord

  1852. Jesus

  1853. Christ

  1854. in

  1855. prayer

  1856. if

  1857. it

  1858. concerns

  1859. the

  1860. purpose

  1861. of

  1862. the

  1863. salvation

  1864. I

  1865. can

  1866. take

  1867. it

  1868. to

  1869. the

  1870. Holy

  1871. Spirit

  1872. in

  1873. prayer

  1874. it's

  1875. not

  1876. wrong

  1877. to

  1878. pray

  1879. just

  1880. to

  1881. God

  1882. for

  1883. he

  1884. is

  1885. triune

  1886. and

  1887. he

  1888. is

  1889. one

  1890. but

  1891. for

  1892. our

  1893. benefit

  1894. Paul

  1895. allows

  1896. us

  1897. access

  1898. into the

  1899. contributions

  1900. of each

  1901. person of the

  1902. Trinity

  1903. to our

  1904. salvation

  1905. on a

  1906. daily

  1907. level

  1908. why don't

  1909. you give

  1910. this a

  1911. goal

  1912. in your

  1913. prayers

  1914. I

  1915. am not

  1916. a

  1917. fan

  1918. of

  1919. sci-fi

  1920. but

  1921. I

  1922. know

  1923. enough

  1924. about

  1925. it

  1926. to

  1927. have

  1928. learned

  1929. that

  1930. in

  1931. the

  1932. future

  1933. spacecraft

  1934. !

  1935. will

  1936. all

  1937. have

  1938. shields

  1939. to

  1940. defend

  1941. themselves

  1942. against

  1943. the

  1944. laser

  1945. beams

  1946. of

  1947. enemy

  1948. spacecraft!

  1949. Now

  1950. there's a

  1951. sense in

  1952. which

  1953. when a

  1954. minister

  1955. raises

  1956. his

  1957. hands

  1958. at the

  1959. end

  1960. of a

  1961. service

  1962. of

  1963. worship

  1964. and on

  1965. God's

  1966. behalf

  1967. proclaims

  1968. the

  1969. benediction

  1970. God is

  1971. placing a

  1972. shield of

  1973. protection

  1974. around us

  1975. so that

  1976. whatever may

  1977. happen in

  1978. the week

  1979. ahead

  1980. we shall

  1981. not merely

  1982. cope

  1983. but we

  1984. shall

  1985. overcome

  1986. the

  1987. blessing

  1988. is

  1989. placing

  1990. a

  1991. shield

  1992. of

  1993. God's

  1994. protection

  1995. around

  1996. us

  1997. but

  1998. ultimately

  1999. as I

  2000. said

  2001. earlier

  2002. the

  2003. benediction

  2004. is our

  2005. glorious

  2006. triune

  2007. God's

  2008. gracious

  2009. offer

  2010. to us

  2011. not just

  2012. of the

  2013. virtues

  2014. of his

  2015. love

  2016. and of

  2017. his grace

  2018. and of

  2090. will you

  2091. grant me

  2092. eternal life

  2093. even as I

  2095. to following

  2097. will you

  2098. do this

  2099. now
