  1. It's my pleasure today to welcome Reverend Colin Dow to preach to us at both this morning and this evening service. Colin is minister at Crow Road Free Church in Glasgow.

  2. Thank you. Thank you very much, Colin. My legs are kind of sore, has to be said. Wonderful to be here. I always feel like I'm coming home when I'm coming up to Lewis and I never knew why that was until my wife bought me a subscription to an ancestry website for my Christmas present.

  3. And it turns out that I am a direct descendant of Summer Edma Gilbride, the first Lord of the Isles. So that must be why I feel I'm coming home.

  4. Behold, the Lord God comes with might and his arm rules for him. Behold, his reward is with him and his recompense before him. He will tend his flock like a shepherd.

  5. He will gather the lambs in his arms. He will carry them in his bosom and gently lead those with young.

  6. Let us worship God. Let us sing to his praise in Psalm 93. Psalm 93 on page 123.

  7. The Lord is King, his throne endures, majestic in its height.

  8. Let us stand as we sing to God's praise.

  9. Let us sing to God's praise.

  10. The Lord is King, his throne endures, majestic in its height.

  11. The world is found firm and sure,

  12. Rebooteth cannot be, Rebooteth cannot be.

  13. Your throne is strong, Now you are God.

  14. From all eternity, From all eternity,

  15. But these the Lord have lifted up,

  16. They lifted up their voice,

  17. They lifted up their voice,

  18. But these the Lord have lifted up their weight,

  19. And made a mighty noise,

  20. And made a mighty noise,

  21. And made a mighty noise.

  22. The Lord have grown on high,

  23. Is strong,

  24. For powerful is he,

  25. For powerful is he,

  26. And thunder of the ocean's waves,

  27. Are breakers of the sea,

  28. Are breakers of the sea,

  29. Are breakers of the sea,

  30. Are breakers of the sea,

  31. Are breakers of the sea.

  32. Your voice is not a true source and firm,

  33. Unchanging is your word,

  34. Unchanging is your word,

  35. Unchanging is your word,

  36. And holiness adorns your eyes,

  37. For endless days,

  38. For endless days,

  39. For endless days,

  40. For endless days,

  41. For endless days,

  42. For endless days,

  43. Let us pray.

  44. Indeed, O Lord Almighty, had we a thousand tongues,

  45. they would not be enough to sing your praises,

  46. for you are King.

  47. You have always been King, you have always reigned,

  48. since before the sun was set in the sky,

  49. and you flung the stars into space.

  50. You were King, and you are King today.

  51. You are in sovereign control of all things that come to pass,

  52. and you will always be King.

  53. You reign in splendor and glory, and we bow before you,

  54. our Sovereign God.

  55. You are Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one true and living God.

  56. God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable,

  57. in his being wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.

  58. And yet we have seen you in the face of Jesus Christ.

  59. We thank you for your great love for us.

  60. You demonstrated your love for us in this.

  61. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

  62. Surely, O Lord, by nature we were conceived in sin.

  63. We sinned daily in thought, word, and deed,

  64. both by the wrong things we do,

  65. and the right things we fail to do.

  66. How we thank you, O Lord,

  67. that you have laid all our sins

  68. on the shoulders of our Saviour, Jesus Christ,

  69. who bore them on Calvary's tree for us.

  70. How we thank you that if we confess our sins,

  71. you are faithful and just to forgive our sins

  72. and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  73. How we thank you that the blood of Jesus Christ

  74. is enough to forgive all our sins.

  75. But more so,

  76. the blood of Jesus Christ covers us with his righteousness.

  77. So that even as you look upon us,

  78. as we are united in Christ,

  79. you say of us,

  80. you are my beloved son,

  81. you are my beloved daughter,

  82. in you I am well pleased.

  83. What a great message the gospel of Jesus Christ is.

  84. And we pray this morning that you would send your Holy Spirit

  85. that we may focus our minds

  86. on Jesus Christ and him crucified,

  87. the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me,

  88. the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for the sheep.

  89. We ask all these things

  90. with the forgiveness of all our sin,

  91. in Jesus' name.

  92. Amen.

  93. It is so wonderful to see all you boys and girls here today.

  94. Did any of you run yesterday?

  95. We have two down here.

  96. Anyone else?

  97. Are your legs as sore as mine today?

  98. Yeah?

  99. I want to help you understand

  100. what ministers do for a living.

  101. Okay?

  102. Because lots of people come to me and say,

  103. what do ministers do?

  104. And sometimes I find it quite hard

  105. to explain to someone

  106. who doesn't go to church

  107. what a minister does.

  108. How would you answer that question,

  109. what does a minister do?

  110. Well, I want to help

  111. try and explain to you

  112. what a minister does.

  113. So,

  114. I here

  115. have a pencil case.

  116. And I know that there's a young man

  117. in this connegation

  118. whose father has bought him

  119. this pencil case.

  120. Who's that young man?

  121. Uh-huh.

  122. But because

  123. it couldn't be delivered

  124. here,

  125. it had to be delivered

  126. to my house in Glasgow.

  127. But it wasn't me

  128. who bought the pencil case

  129. for this young man.

  130. It was

  131. his father.

  132. This young man's father

  133. who loves him very much

  134. and wants him to have

  135. the coolest

  136. pencil case

  137. in the whole

  138. of the world.

  139. It's got

  140. Mr. Beast

  141. written in the front.

  142. And it's got a picture

  143. of Callum.

  144. Right in the front of it.

  145. And I wonder

  146. whether

  147. Callum Angi,

  148. would you mind

  149. walking up here

  150. because I certainly

  151. can't walk down there.

  152. Would you come

  153. and get this

  154. from me?

  155. Would you mind?

  156. Tell you what,

  157. I'll meet you halfway.

  158. Well,

  159. there we go.

  160. It's come all the way

  161. from China

  162. without a 254%

  163. cut.

  164. Good boy,

  165. Callum Angi.

  166. So,

  167. I came all the way

  168. up here

  169. to do three things.

  170. I came up here

  171. to run the half marathon.

  172. I came up here

  173. to preach today.

  174. And I came up here

  175. to give a present

  176. from a father

  177. to his son.

  178. because,

  179. well,

  180. Gordon loves

  181. Callum Angi

  182. and Gordon loves

  183. to buy

  184. Callum Angi

  185. lovely things.

  186. So,

  187. what do you think

  188. a minister does?

  189. And what is me

  190. giving that pencil case

  191. to you got to do

  192. with being a minister?

  193. Huh?

  194. Ministers

  195. give

  196. what our loving

  197. heavenly father

  198. has bought

  199. for his children.

  200. So,

  201. our loving

  202. heavenly father,

  203. God,

  204. has bought

  205. salvation

  206. through the blood

  207. of Jesus

  208. for us

  209. if we have

  210. faith in Jesus.

  211. And what the

  212. minister does

  213. is

  214. to tell

  215. God's children,

  216. us,

  217. that God

  218. has bought

  219. a present

  220. for us.

  221. And the minister

  222. stands up

  223. every single Sunday

  224. morning and evening.

  225. this is what

  226. Callum does

  227. every Sunday

  228. morning and evening

  229. to give that gift

  230. to God's children.

  231. To give that gift

  232. to you

  233. and to me.

  234. That's what he does.

  235. So,

  236. as he preaches

  237. from the word,

  238. he is

  239. listening

  240. to God the Father

  241. saying,

  242. tell my children

  243. I have wonderful

  244. gifts for them.

  245. I have forgiveness

  246. for them

  247. from Jesus.

  248. I have peace

  249. for them

  250. from the Holy Spirit.

  251. I have comfort

  252. when they're sad.

  253. I have joy

  254. for them.

  255. I have hope

  256. for them

  257. when they can't

  258. see the way ahead.

  259. I have all

  260. these things

  261. for them.

  262. And through

  263. the preaching

  264. of the word,

  265. the minister

  266. gives these gifts

  267. to God's children.

  268. So,

  269. when next time

  270. someone asks you,

  271. what does a minister

  272. do?

  273. This is a bit

  274. old for you,

  275. but I often

  276. get told that

  277. a minister's job

  278. is six days

  279. to be invisible

  280. and one day

  281. to be incomprehensible.

  282. But don't

  283. use that.

  284. Say,

  285. it's the minister's job

  286. to give

  287. the gift

  288. a father

  289. has bought

  290. to his children.

  291. And then

  292. when they say,

  293. what does that mean?

  294. Explain to them,

  295. God

  296. has bought

  297. salvation

  298. for his children

  299. through the blood

  300. of his son,

  301. Jesus,

  302. and it's

  303. the minister's job

  304. to offer

  305. that salvation

  306. to God's children.

  307. So,

  308. next time

  309. you're playing

  310. with your pencil case,

  311. Calabangi,

  312. and fill it up

  313. and take it to school

  314. and show your teacher,

  315. isn't this cool?

  316. Or next time

  317. you're using

  318. your pencil case

  319. in school,

  320. children,

  321. could you remember

  322. my story

  323. about what a minister

  324. does?

  325. Giving gifts

  326. a loving father

  327. has bought

  328. for his child

  329. to them.

  330. We're now going

  331. to say the Lord's

  332. Prayer together.

  333. Our Father,

  334. Jordan,

  335. heaven,

  336. hallowed be thy name.

  337. Thy kingdom come,

  338. thy will be done

  339. on earth

  340. as it is in heaven.

  341. Forgive us

  342. our debts

  343. as we forgive

  344. our debtors.

  345. And lead us

  346. not into temptation,

  347. but deliver us

  348. from evil.

  349. For thine

  350. is the kingdom,

  351. the power,

  352. and the glory

  353. forever and ever.

  354. Amen.

  355. We're going to sing

  356. a song now,

  357. a psalm now,

  358. that talks about

  359. our sin

  360. and how God

  361. forgives our sin.

  362. This is a great gift

  363. the Father gives us.

  364. He blocks out our sin

  365. because of the death

  366. of Jesus.

  367. Psalm 51

  368. from verse 5

  369. to verse 15

  370. in St.

  371. Psalms,

  372. page 68.

  373. 8.

  374. Psalm 51,

  375. page 68.

  376. From my birth

  377. I have been sinful.

  378. Such the nature

  379. I received,

  380. sinful from my first

  381. beginning,

  382. in my mother's womb

  383. concede.

  384. Again,

  385. let's stand to sing

  386. as we sing

  387. Psalm 51

  388. to God's praise.

  389. For my heart

  390. I have been sinful,

  391. Such the nature

  392. I receive,

  393. Sent to God

  394. from my first

  395. beginning,

  396. And my mother's

  397. womb concede,

  398. Truth,

  399. you look

  400. for in my heart,

  401. Wisdom to me

  402. you enviars.

  403. And with this

  404. of beautify me,

  405. I'll be whiter

  406. than the snow.

  407. Let the bones

  408. you must be joyful,

  409. May I joy

  410. and gladness know.

  411. From my failure

  412. hide your face,

  413. Lord,

  414. and all my wickedness.

  415. Lord,

  416. create a pure heart

  417. in me,

  418. and a steadfast mind

  419. renew.

  420. Do not take your spirit

  421. from me,

  422. cast me not away

  423. from you.

  424. Give me back

  425. the joy I have,

  426. Keep my will

  427. in spirit blood.

  428. Then I'll teach

  429. your ways to sinners,

  430. Rebels will turn

  431. back to you.

  432. free me from the guilt,

  433. my Savior,

  434. for those merciful

  435. and true.

  436. Then I'll praise

  437. your righteousness,

  438. teach my lips

  439. your name to bless.

  440. Amen.

  441. We're going to read now

  442. from Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  443. Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  444. And we're going to read

  445. from verse 1

  446. to verse 17.

  447. This is on page 724

  448. of the Bible I have here.

  449. Isaiah 40.

  450. This is the word of God.

  451. Comfort.

  452. Comfort, my people,

  453. says your God.

  454. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem

  455. and cry to her

  456. that her warfare has ended.

  457. That her iniquity is pardoned.

  458. That she has received

  459. from the Lord's hand

  460. double for all her sins.

  461. A voice cries.

  462. In the wilderness

  463. prepare the way of the Lord.

  464. Make straight in the desert

  465. a highway for our God.

  466. Every valley

  467. shall be lifted up

  468. and every mountain and hill

  469. be made low.

  470. The uneven ground

  471. shall become level

  472. and the rough places

  473. a plain.

  474. and the glory of the Lord

  475. shall be revealed.

  476. And all flesh

  477. shall see it together

  478. for the mouth

  479. of the Lord

  480. has spoken.

  481. A voice

  482. says,

  483. cry.

  484. And I said,

  485. what shall I cry?

  486. All flesh is grass

  487. and its beauty

  488. is like the flower

  489. of the field.

  490. The grass withers.

  491. The flower fades

  492. when the breath

  493. of the Lord

  494. blows on it.

  495. Surely the people

  496. are grass.

  497. The grass withers.

  498. The flower fades.

  499. But the word of our God

  500. will stand forever.

  501. Get you up

  502. to a high mountain,

  503. O Zion,

  504. herald of good news.

  505. Lift up your voice

  506. with strength,

  507. O Jerusalem,

  508. herald of good news.

  509. Lift it up.

  510. Fear not.

  511. Say to the cities

  512. of Judah,

  513. behold your God.

  514. Behold the Lord God

  515. comes with might

  516. and his arm rules for him.

  517. Behold his reward

  518. is with him

  519. and his recompense

  520. before him.

  521. He will tend his flock

  522. like a shepherd.

  523. He will gather

  524. the lambs in his arms.

  525. He will carry them

  526. in his bosom

  527. and gently lead those

  528. that are with young.

  529. who has measured

  530. the water

  531. in the hollow

  532. of his hand

  533. and marked off

  534. the heavens

  535. with a span,

  536. enclosed the dust

  537. of the earth

  538. in a measure

  539. and weighed

  540. the mountains

  541. in scales

  542. and the hills

  543. in a balance?

  544. Who has measured

  545. the spirit of the Lord

  546. or what man

  547. shows him his counsel?

  548. Whom did he consult

  549. and who made him understand?

  550. Who taught him

  551. the path of justice

  552. and taught him knowledge

  553. and showed him

  554. the way of understanding?

  555. Behold the nations

  556. are like a drop

  557. from a bucket

  558. and are accounted

  559. as the dust

  560. on the scales.

  561. Behold he takes up

  562. the coastlands

  563. like fine dust.

  564. Lebanon would not

  565. suffice for fuel

  566. nor are its beasts

  567. enough for a burnt offering.

  568. All the nations

  569. are as nothing

  570. before him.

  571. They are accounted

  572. by him as less

  573. than nothing

  574. and emptiness.

  575. Amen.

  576. May God bless

  577. this reading

  578. of his word.

  579. Let us pray.

  580. We thank you Lord

  581. for your word.

  582. We thank you

  583. that it is

  584. your living breath.

  585. That just as you

  586. breathed

  587. into the nostrils

  588. of the first man

  589. Adam

  590. and he became

  591. a living being

  592. so you breathe

  593. through your word

  594. into our hearts

  595. and we

  596. spiritually

  597. live.

  598. we thank you

  599. that your word

  600. is living and active

  601. sharper than any

  602. two-edged sword.

  603. We thank you

  604. that your word

  605. is like honey

  606. honey

  607. from the comb

  608. and more precious

  609. than gold.

  610. We pray for

  611. every organization

  612. engaged in

  613. spreading your word

  614. in translating

  615. it into

  616. the languages

  617. of the peoples

  618. of the world.

  619. world.

  620. We thank you

  621. for Wycliffe

  622. Bible Translators

  623. for the work

  624. of the Bible

  625. Societies

  626. for the work

  627. of the Langham

  628. Partnership.

  629. We thank you

  630. for the growing

  631. church

  632. all over

  633. our world.

  634. We thank you

  635. especially

  636. for the growth

  637. of the church

  638. in nations

  639. which previously

  640. had been closed

  641. to the gospel.

  642. We think of

  643. the nation

  644. of Mongolia

  645. a nation

  646. which up

  647. until the fall

  648. of the Iron

  649. Curtain

  650. we knew

  651. little or

  652. nothing about

  653. and yet

  654. now

  655. there is

  656. a growing

  657. church

  658. with 60,000

  659. believers

  660. sending missionaries

  661. all over

  662. that part of

  663. Asia

  664. even into

  665. China.

  666. Lord we thank

  667. you that your

  668. spirit is doing

  669. amazing things

  670. is raising

  671. the spiritual

  672. temperature

  673. of entire

  674. nations.

  675. Lord we pray

  676. that you

  677. would send

  678. revival

  679. on our own

  680. beloved Scotland.

  681. Will you not

  682. O Lord

  683. rend the heavens

  684. in wrath

  685. remember mercy

  686. O Lord

  687. and do the

  688. things you

  689. did at first

  690. here.

  691. We pray

  692. that you

  693. would fill

  694. our churches

  695. to overflowing

  696. with eager

  697. worshippers

  698. and lifelong

  699. disciples.

  700. We pray

  701. Lord that you

  702. would thrust

  703. men into the

  704. harvest field

  705. for the

  706. harvest

  707. is white.

  708. We thank

  709. you for this

  710. church

  711. which has

  712. for so long

  713. been a bastion

  714. of the preaching

  715. of the word

  716. and the praising

  717. of your name.

  718. And we pray

  719. Lord that you

  720. would call

  721. a man of

  722. your own

  723. choosing here.

  724. We thank you

  725. for the thoughts

  726. of Gordon

  727. on Wednesday

  728. evening

  729. and for this

  730. little note

  731. in our orders

  732. of service

  733. which reminds

  734. us of the

  735. things for

  736. which we are

  737. to pray

  738. regarding

  739. this vacancy.

  740. We pray

  741. for unanimity

  742. of spirit

  743. among us.

  744. We pray

  745. that you

  746. would help

  747. us to

  748. be guided

  749. and led

  750. to a man

  751. who is

  752. word focused

  753. in his

  754. ministry.

  755. We pray

  756. that you

  757. would give

  758. us insight.

  759. We thank

  760. you for the

  761. promise that

  762. if any lacks

  763. wisdom

  764. we should

  765. ask it of

  766. you.

  767. We pray

  768. that you

  769. would help

  770. us to trust

  771. in your

  772. timing.

  773. and we

  774. pray

  775. Lord

  776. that you

  777. would help

  778. us to

  779. yield

  780. our

  781. hearts

  782. to

  783. your

  784. choice.

  785. Father

  786. our

  787. great

  788. desire

  789. is

  790. just as

  791. it

  792. is

  793. for

  794. Glasgow.

  795. May

  796. Glasgow

  797. flourish

  798. by the

  799. preaching

  800. of the

  801. word

  802. and the

  803. praising

  804. of your

  805. name

  806. may

  807. Stornoway

  808. flourish

  809. in the

  810. same

  811. way.

  812. Lord

  813. we pray

  814. for our

  815. nation

  816. the

  817. nation

  818. once

  819. known

  820. as

  821. the

  822. land

  823. of the

  824. book.

  825. We

  826. pray

  827. for

  828. the

  829. great

  830. unreached

  831. parts

  832. of our

  833. nation

  834. for

  835. Argyle

  836. and for

  837. Maryshire

  838. for

  839. increasingly

  840. parts of

  841. the inner

  842. and outer

  843. Hebrides.

  844. Lord

  845. we ask

  846. and pray

  847. that you

  848. would send

  849. your spirit

  850. in new

  851. power.

  852. We

  853. pray

  854. Lord

  855. for

  856. our

  857. own

  858. denomination

  859. the

  860. free

  861. church

  862. of

  863. Scotland

  864. we

  865. recognise

  866. that

  867. we

  868. are

  869. a

  870. tiny

  871. little

  872. branch

  873. of

  874. a

  875. worldwide

  876. tree

  877. which

  878. keeps

  879. growing.

  880. We

  881. pray

  882. Lord

  883. that

  884. you

  885. would

  886. bless

  887. however

  888. our

  889. tiny

  890. branch.

  891. I

  892. selfishly

  893. pray

  894. for

  895. our

  896. two

  920. We

  921. give

  922. you

  923. thanks

  924. for

  925. their

  926. growth

  927. over

  928. these

  929. last

  930. months

  931. when

  932. they

  933. have

  934. first

  935. begun

  936. to

  937. worship

  938. you

  939. publicly

  940. and

  941. yet

  942. have

  943. both

  944. doubled

  945. in

  946. size.

  947. Lord

  948. we

  949. pray

  950. for

  951. such

  952. a

  953. growth

  956. all

  957. over

  958. Scotland.

  959. We

  960. pray

  961. for

  962. any

  968. in

  969. our

  971. here.

  972. We

  973. pray

  974. for

  975. those

  976. who

  977. are

  978. physically

  979. ill.

  980. We

  981. pray

  982. for

  983. those

  984. who

  985. are

  986. mentally

  987. challenged.

  988. We

  989. pray

  990. for

  991. those

  992. who

  993. are

  994. discouraged.

  995. We

  996. also

  997. pray

  998. Lord

  999. for

  1000. who

  1001. were

  1002. born

  1003. baptized

  1004. and

  1005. brought

  1006. up

  1007. in

  1008. our

  1009. connegation

  1010. but

  1011. have

  1012. backslidden

  1013. have

  1014. left

  1015. the

  1016. faith

  1017. behind

  1018. them.

  1019. We

  1020. remember

  1021. the

  1022. promises

  1023. made

  1024. at

  1025. baptism.

  1026. Promises

  1027. not

  1028. so

  1029. much

  1030. made

  1031. by

  1032. parents

  1033. to

  1034. you

  1035. but

  1036. made

  1037. by

  1038. you

  1039. to

  1040. parents.

  1041. Lord

  1042. we

  1043. pray

  1044. that

  1045. you

  1046. would

  1047. remember

  1048. the

  1049. covenant

  1050. promises

  1051. you

  1052. made

  1053. and

  1054. bring

  1055. our

  1056. people

  1057. back.

  1058. Now

  1059. Lord

  1060. we

  1061. commit

  1062. ourselves

  1063. to

  1064. you

  1065. asking

  1066. that

  1067. you

  1068. would

  1069. make

  1082. of

  1083. Jesus

  1084. Christ

  1085. would

  1086. reign.

  1087. We

  1089. these

  1090. things

  1091. in

  1123. I

  1124. should

  1128. much

  1129. to

  1130. Elizabeth

  1131. for

  1134. this

  1140. so

  1141. well

  1142. by

  1143. what

  1144. means

  1145. shall

  1179. if

  1180. he

  1185. then

  1186. do

  1187. attentive

  1188. me

  1189. groan

1190. Let me be, he have I sought, with all my soul and heart.

1191. O let me not from the right path of thy commands depart.

1192. Thy word I in my heart have lived, but I offend not thee.

1193. O Lord, the weather blessed are thy status teach the me.

1194. But judgment so thy mouth each one, my lips decreed how.

1195. For joy thy testimonies plead, the righteous, O only name.

1196. Thy will thy holy present make, my meditation.

1197. And carefully I'll have respect, but to thy ways each one.

1198. Among thy statutes my delight shall constantly be set.

1199. And by thy grace I never will, my holy word forget.

  1200. Amen.

1201. It really is a great privilege to preach to you today and to share this time with you.

1202. Some of you may remember that I did a placement as a student here 24 years ago.

1203. Back then I had far more hair, far more energy and far less children.

1204. So it's lovely to bring with me this weekend my wife, who won first prize in the over 50s female half marathon yesterday.

1205. I'm very proud of her.

1206. And then son number two, Aidan.

  1207. Son number three, Jonathan.

  1208. And his girlfriend, Ailey.

1209. So thank you for your very kind welcome.

1210. It really is lovely, lovely to be here and to see old friends.

1211. We're going to turn in our Bibles now to Isaiah chapter 40 and verse 11.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  1212. Isaiah 40 and verse 11.

1213. Where we read of God, he will tend his flock like a shepherd.

1214. He will gather the lambs in his arms.

1215. He will carry them in his bosom.

1216. And gently lead those that are with young.

1217. Heavenly Father, we bow in your presence.

1218. May your word be our rule, your spirit our teacher, and your greater glory our supreme concern.

1219. Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  1220. Amen.

1221. There are few more indeeding images that you may have in your minds of God than that of him being our shepherd.

1222. Perhaps the most famous line of any song in any language is the first line of Psalm 23.

  1223. The Lord's my shepherd.

1224. One of Jesus' most famous parables is that of the shepherd.

1225. Who having left the 99 sheep in safety, searches for that one lost sheep.

1226. And when he finds it, he lays that one lost sheep across his shoulders.

1227. And joyfully brings it home.

1228. Our Lord said to himself, I am the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep.

1229. There's something about the image of God as our shepherd which comforts us.

1230. And whatever our circumstances makes us feel safe.

1231. This chapter, Isaiah 40, tells the story of how God will rescue his people from their exile in Babylon.

1232. Having spiraled downwards through their unfaithfulness to him,

1233. the Israelites were forcibly relocated all across the vast Babylonian empire.

1234. For 70 years they were exiled from their homeland because of their unfaithfulness to God.

1235. These were terrifying years of exile and pain.

1236. But a time will come when God will lead them back from Babylon and bring them back to Israel.

1237. When their sins shall be forgiven and they shall once again be established in Jerusalem.

1238. The rescue from Babylon is pictured in verse 11 here as that of the Lord.

  1239. Like a shepherd.

  1240. Tending his flock.

1241. Gathering the lambs in his arms.

1242. Carrying them in his bosom.

1243. And gently leading those who have young.

1244. After all, these returning people of Israel will have hundreds of miles to travel back to their homeland from Babylon.

1245. But the Lord shall be their shepherd.

1246. He shall lead them like a flock of sheep.

1247. He shall provide for them.

1248. He shall protect them every step of the way.

1249. Now, although it may be a bit fanciful,

1250. the homeward journey of the exiles from Babylon was compared by many of the early church fathers

1251. to the lifelong journey of the Christian.

  1252. Like Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress,

1253. we leave behind us the city of destruction when we become Christians

1254. and we make our way to the celestial city of heaven.

1255. But we do not travel alone in life.

  1256. Unkept.

  1257. Unloved.

  1258. Unprotected.

1259. Rather, as we make our way through life,

1260. the Lord tends to us,

  1261. gathers us,

  1262. carries us,

1263. and gently leads us to himself.

1264. We may experience many hardships on the journey.

1265. We may be attacked by all kinds of enemies.

1266. But the Lord will be our shepherd

1267. and he will lead us home.

  1268. Picture this.

1269. In all of life's ups and downs,

1270. in all of our pleasures,

1271. in all of our pains,

1272. in all of our joys,

1273. and in all of our sorrows,

  1274. our Lord is tender,

  1275. loving.

  1276. He's our powerful shepherd.

1277. And he will hold us fast,

  1278. nearer to his heart.

1279. I want us to explore this image of the Lord as our shepherd

1280. from this verse in Isaiah 40,

  1281. under three headings,

  1282. our glorious shepherd,

  1283. our gracious shepherd,

  1284. our gentle shepherd.

1285. For any today who feel as though they're lost and alone,

  1286. take comfort.

  1287. Take comfort.

1288. The Lord is your shepherd.

1289. He will never leave you.

1290. He will never forsake you.

  1291. He will carry you.

1292. He will be with you always.

  1293. First of all then,

1294. we have our glorious shepherd.

  1295. Our glorious shepherd.

  1296. When I was a child,

1297. and I'd get into verbal spat with another boy in my class,

1298. the argument would always end up with him saying to me,

1299. my dad's bigger than your dad.

1300. And then I'd say to him,

1301. no, no, no, no, no, no.

1302. My dad's bigger than your dad.

  1303. Truth be told,

1304. both dads were the same size.

  1305. In Isaiah 40,

  1306. there's no doubt who's the bigger.

1307. One of the reasons that we love Isaiah 40 is

1308. because of the picture that it paints

  1309. of the sheer immensity,

  1310. glory,

1311. and power of the Lord who is our shepherd.

1312. It all begins in verse 9

  1313. with the announcement,

  1314. Behold your God.

  1315. Behold your God.

  1316. Behold him indeed.

1317. See him in the limitless sovereignty

  1318. of his kingly reign.

1319. There follows from verse 12

1320. a series of rhetorical questions.

1321. Who has measured the waters

1322. in the hollow of his hand?

1323. Who has measured the spirit of the Lord?

1324. The might and power of Babylon

1325. can be counted and measured.

1326. But the immensity of God

  1327. is beyond all calculation.

  1328. Behold,

  1329. Isaiah cries out,

1330. the nations are like drops from a bucket

1331. and are accounted as dust on the scales.

  1332. Drops of water.

  1333. Dust indeed.

  1334. The greatest

1335. of all the human empires

  1336. is but dust

  1337. in the scales

  1338. to God.

  1339. On one side

1340. is the weight of God.

  1341. On the other

  1342. a fleck of dust.

  1343. All the nations

1344. there is nothing before him.

  1345. Who does this puny

  1346. king of Babylon

  1347. suppose himself

  1348. to be compared

  1349. to the immensity

  1350. of the glory

  1351. of the God

  1352. of heaven and earth?

  1353. The God

  1354. who cannot be likened

  1355. to any image?

  1356. The limitless

  1357. infinity of his essence

  1358. and character

  1359. going beyond

  1360. the limited

  1361. finite mind

  1362. any of us

  1363. can ever imagine?

  1364. And then come

  1365. the three great questions

  1366. of this chapter.

  1367. Do you not know?

  1368. Have you not heard?

  1369. He sits above

1370. the circle of the earth

  1371. and its inhabitants

  1372. are like grasshoppers.

  1373. He brings princes

  1374. to nothing

  1375. and makes the rulers

  1376. of the earth

  1377. as emptiness

  1378. or vanity.

  1379. Lift up your eyes

  1380. on high

  1381. and see

  1382. who created

  1383. all these.

  1384. He brings out

  1385. their host

  1386. by number

  1387. and he calls

  1388. them all

  1389. by name.

  1390. Astronomers

  1391. will admit

  1392. they haven't

  1393. even begun

  1394. to scratch

  1395. the surface

  1396. of all

  1397. there is to know

  1398. about

  1399. the stars

  1400. we can see.

  1401. Never mind

  1402. the stars

  1403. only the Hubble

  1404. can see.

  1405. God created

  1406. them all

  1407. and he gave

  1408. each one

  1409. a name.

  1410. It crescendos

  1411. in verse 28

  1412. The Lord

  1413. is the everlasting

  1414. God

  1415. the creator

  1416. of the ends

  1417. of the earth.

  1418. He does not

  1419. faint or grow weary

  1420. his understanding

  1421. is unsearchable.

  1422. The king of Babylon

  1423. he's seated

  1424. on a throne

  1425. of earthly glory.

  1426. He sneers

  1427. at the world

  1428. around him

  1429. but all the

  1430. time

  1431. his beauty

  1432. is like

  1433. the flower

  1434. of the field.

  1435. He is less

  1436. than a grain

  1437. of dust.

  1438. He's a grasshopper.

  1439. He's a great

  1440. nothing.

  1441. My dad's

  1442. bigger than

  1443. your dad

  1444. indeed.

  1445. Our great

  1446. shepherd king

  1447. the Lord

  1448. himself

  1449. he is the

  1450. everlasting

  1451. God

  1452. the created

  1453. of the ends

  1454. of the earth.

  1455. He alone

  1456. stands

  1457. gloriously

  1458. enthroned

  1459. above all

  1460. that he has

  1461. made.

  1462. Our human

  1463. minds

  1464. cannot imagine

  1465. the greatness

  1466. of his being.

  1467. Our human

  1468. calculations

  1469. will always

  1470. fall short

  1471. of measuring

  1472. even the

  1473. smallest movement

  1474. of his power.

  1475. There are no

  1476. words in any

  1477. human language

  1478. sufficient to

  1479. even begin to

  1480. describe his

  1481. immensity.

  1482. To describe

  1483. himself to us

  1484. God must use

  1485. baby talk

  1486. so that we may

  1487. understand.

  1488. All his

  1489. revelations of

  1490. himself are like

  1491. a toddler

  1492. babbling

  1493. but that is

  1494. what our

  1495. God must

  1496. do so that

  1497. we may

  1498. know him.

  1499. Who then

  1500. is your

  1501. shepherd

  1502. who tends

  1503. you?

  1504. Who holds

  1505. you close

  1506. to his

  1507. heart?

  1508. Who is

  1509. this shepherd

  1510. king who

  1511. gathers you

  1512. like a

  1513. lamb in

  1514. his arms

  1515. and gently

  1516. leads you

  1517. through life?

  1518. He is the

  1519. everlasting

  1520. God before

  1521. whom the

  1522. nations are

  1523. as drops

  1524. in a bucket

  1525. and as

  1526. grains of

  1527. dust.

  1528. The God

  1529. who will

  1530. rescue his

  1531. captive people

  1532. from Babylon

  1533. who will

  1534. lead them

  1535. through the

  1536. wilderness

  1537. home to

  1538. Israel.

  1539. This is

  1540. who he

  1541. is in

  1542. the

  1543. immensity

  1544. of his

  1545. power,

  1546. his

  1547. supremacy

  1548. and his

  1549. glory.

  1550. What

  1551. comfort this

  1552. must have

  1553. been to

  1554. the fearful

  1555. people of

  1556. Israel.

  1557. Nothing

  1558. need they

  1559. fear if

  1560. God be

  1561. their

  1562. shepherd.

  1563. No

  1564. hunger,

  1565. no thirst,

  1566. no army,

  1567. no robber,

  1568. no mountain

  1569. or desert.

  1570. As the

  1571. famous St.

  1572. Julian of

  1573. Norwich

  1574. once said,

  1575. all shall

  1576. be well,

  1577. all shall

  1578. be well.

  1579. It shall

  1580. be well

  1581. because of

  1582. the glory

  1583. of the

  1584. God who

  1585. is our

  1586. shepherd.

  1587. Our

  1588. enemies may

  1589. be greater

  1590. than us,

  1591. but there

  1592. is drops

  1593. from a

  1594. bucket to

  1595. God.

  1596. The

  1597. deserts of

  1598. our lives

  1599. may seem

  1600. empty,

  1601. but the

  1602. God who

  1603. created

  1604. water

  1605. shall fill

  1606. them with

  1607. refreshing

  1608. pools.

  1609. He is

  1610. the

  1611. Lord,

  1612. our

  1613. shepherd,

  1614. who will

  1615. lead us

  1616. beside the

  1617. still waters

  1618. and make

  1619. us lie

  1620. down in

  1621. green

  1622. pastures,

  1623. who will

  1624. lead us

  1625. in paths

  1626. of

  1627. righteousness.

  1628. The

  1629. Lord,

  1630. our

  1631. shepherd,

  1632. who will

  1633. be with

  1634. us,

  1635. comforting

  1636. us with

  1637. his rod

  1638. and staff

  1639. as we

  1640. walk through

  1641. the valleys

  1642. of the

  1643. shadow

  1644. of death.

  1645. As the

  1646. Israelites

  1647. make their

  1648. way from

  1649. Babylon

  1650. to

  1651. Canaan,

  1652. God

  1653. will prepare

  1654. them

  1655. banqueting

  1656. tables in

  1657. the

  1658. wilderness,

  1659. and his

  1660. goodness

  1661. and mercy

  1662. shall follow

  1663. them always.

  1664. Behold,

  1665. our

  1666. God,

  1667. Isaiah

  1668. cries.

  1669. He will

  1670. tend his

  1671. flock like

  1672. a shepherd.

  1673. He will

  1674. gather the

  1675. lambs in

  1676. his arms.

  1677. He will

  1678. carry them

  1679. in his

  1680. bosom and

  1681. gently lead

  1682. those who

  1683. have

  1684. young.

  1685. him.

  1686. If the

  1687. church

  1688. fathers

  1689. were

  1690. right,

  1691. and

  1692. the

  1693. return

  1694. from

  1695. exile

  1696. is a

  1697. picture

  1698. of the

  1699. Christian

  1700. life,

  1701. then

  1702. surely

  1703. we

  1704. too

  1705. can

  1706. take

  1707. comfort

  1708. from

  1709. the

  1710. immensity

  1711. and glory

  1712. of the

  1713. Lord

  1714. who is

  1715. our

  1716. shepherd.

  1717. Who are

  1718. these

  1719. enemies

  1720. who stand

  1721. against

  1722. us,

  1723. who seem

  1724. so tall

  1725. and strong

  1726. to us?

  1727. They have

  1728. not seen

  1729. the glory

  1730. of God

  1731. who stands

  1732. tall over

  1733. them.

  1734. What is

  1735. this physical

  1736. or mental

  1737. illness we

  1738. are enduring?

  1739. This grief

  1740. which gnaws

  1741. at our

  1742. very bones.

  1743. Surely

  1744. our God

  1745. who sustains

  1746. the innumerable

  1747. stars in

  1748. their heavenly

  1749. positions.

  1750. Surely

  1751. he can

  1752. sustain us

  1753. and cause

  1754. our cup

  1755. of joy

  1756. yet to

  1757. overflow.

  1758. Are there

  1759. any here

  1760. this morning

  1761. who are

  1762. anxious

  1763. any here

  1764. this morning

  1765. who are

  1766. fearful?

  1767. In my

  1768. Spurgeon's

  1769. morning and

  1770. evening readings

  1771. for the

  1772. 27th of

  1773. March,

  1774. I read

  1775. some

  1776. beautiful

  1777. words.

  1778. He wrote,

  1779. this is

  1780. the royal

  1781. road to

  1782. comfort.

  1783. Great

  1784. thoughts

  1785. of your

  1786. sin alone

  1787. will drive

  1788. you to

  1789. despair.

  1790. But listen

  1791. to this.

  1792. Great

  1793. thoughts

  1794. of Christ

  1795. will

  1796. pilot you

  1797. into the

  1798. heaven of

  1799. peace.

  1800. Great

  1801. thoughts

  1802. of Christ

  1803. will

  1804. pilot you

  1805. into the

  1806. heaven of

  1807. peace.

  1808. Look not

  1809. inwards at

  1810. our

  1811. weakness

  1812. and sin

  1813. but upwards

  1814. at the

  1815. glory and

  1816. holiness and

  1817. love of

  1818. our shepherd.

  1819. Then,

  1820. surely then,

  1821. we shall

  1822. be at

  1823. peace and

  1824. all shall

  1825. be well

  1826. with us.

  1827. The

  1828. Lord's

  1829. our

  1830. glorious

  1831. shepherd.

  1832. Well,

  1833. second,

  1834. the Lord is

  1835. our gracious

  1836. shepherd.

  1837. He's our

  1838. gracious

  1839. shepherd.

  1840. You will

  1841. know that

  1842. the people

  1843. of Israel

  1844. were in

  1845. exile in

  1846. Babylon

  1847. because of

  1848. their

  1849. unfaithfulness

  1850. to God.

  1851. For

  1852. hundreds of

  1853. years prior

  1854. to their

  1855. exile,

  1856. ever since

  1857. the days

  1858. of David,

  1859. they had

  1860. been on

  1861. a downward

  1862. spiral.

  1863. They had

  1864. worshipped the

  1865. Lord,

  1866. but they had

  1867. worshipped many

  1868. other gods

  1869. also,

  1870. idols made

  1871. of wood

  1872. and stone,

  1873. and they

  1874. sacrificed

  1875. to these

  1876. idols.

  1877. We even

  1878. read of

  1879. one of the

  1880. kings of

  1881. Israel who

  1882. sacrificed his

  1883. children to

  1884. one of

  1885. these idols.

  1886. prior to

  1887. their

  1888. captivity in

  1889. Babylon,

  1890. Israel had

  1891. become a

  1892. morally

  1893. disgusting,

  1894. socially

  1895. corrupted,

  1896. and

  1897. religiously

  1898. depraved

  1899. nation.

  1900. Well,

  1901. God's

  1902. judgment upon

  1903. them was

  1904. severe.

  1905. He caused

  1906. the Babylonian

  1907. army to

  1908. march in

  1909. and destroy

  1910. Jerusalem,

  1911. to carry

  1912. its best

  1913. people away

  1914. into exile,

  1915. to scatter

  1916. them to the

  1917. four winds of

  1918. the massive

  1919. Babylonian

  1920. empire.

  1921. However,

  1922. his judgment

  1923. upon them,

  1924. to use

  1925. technical

  1926. terms,

  1927. was not

  1928. retributive as

  1929. much as it

  1930. was restorative.

  1931. He punished

  1932. them to bring

  1933. them to their

  1934. senses,

  1935. as we may

  1936. a child.

  1937. Because during

  1938. those 70

  1939. years of

  1940. exile,

  1941. the people

  1942. of Israel

  1943. came to

  1944. their senses

  1945. and realized

  1946. why all this

  1947. had happened

  1948. to them.

  1949. They realized

  1950. that it was

  1951. because of

  1952. their sin

  1953. that God

  1954. had judged

  1955. them.

  1956. They repented

  1957. and once again

  1958. began to

  1959. seek the

  1960. Lord.

  1961. And as at

  1962. this point we

  1963. enter Isaiah

  1964. 40,

  1965. where God

  1966. says,

  1967. Comfort,

  1968. comfort my

  1969. people,

  1970. says your

  1971. God.

  1972. Speak tenderly

  1973. to Jerusalem

  1974. and cry to

  1975. her that her

  1976. warfare is

  1977. ended,

  1978. that her

  1979. iniquity is

  1980. pardoned,

  1981. that she

  1982. has received

  1983. from the

  1984. Lord's hand

  1985. double for

  1986. all her

  1987. sins.

  1988. The God

  1989. who had

  1990. judged them

  1991. on account

  1992. of their

  1993. sins,

  1994. now forgives

  1995. and restores

  1996. them to

  1997. himself.

  1998. His

  1999. gracious love

  2000. for them

  2001. means that

  2002. they shall

  2003. never cease

  2004. to be

  2005. his people

  2006. and he

  2007. shall never

  2008. cease to

  2009. be their

  2010. God.

  2011. He announces

  2012. his forgiveness,

  2013. her warfare

  2014. is ended,

  2015. her iniquity

  2016. is pardoned.

  2017. Israel has

  2018. paid for

  2019. its sin

  2020. by being

  2021. judged

  2022. and exiled

  2023. from God,

  2024. by being

  2025. cast away

  2026. from his

  2027. holy presence

  2028. in Jerusalem.

  2029. Now,

  2030. having paid

  2031. the price

  2032. of their

  2033. unfaithfulness,

  2034. God announces

  2035. their forgiveness

  2036. and their

  2037. restoration.

  2038. They have

  2039. paid the

  2040. price of

  2041. their sin,

  2042. they have

  2043. borne their

  2044. punishment,

  2045. they have

  2046. been exiled

  2047. and forsaken

  2048. by God,

  2049. now God

  2050. will bring

  2051. them back

  2052. and restore

  2053. them to

  2054. himself once

  2055. again.

  2056. He shall

  2057. be their

  2058. God and

  2059. they shall

  2060. be his

  2061. people.

  2062. This

  2063. chapter

  2064. paints a

  2065. picture not

  2066. just of the

  2067. Lord of

  2068. glory but

  2069. of the

  2070. Lord of

  2071. grace.

  2072. the grace

  2073. of God

  2074. and the

  2075. forgiveness

  2076. of his

  2077. people and

  2078. their

  2079. reconciliation

  2080. with them

  2081. through the

  2082. payment of

  2083. a debt of

  2084. faithfulness

  2085. they owed

  2086. him.

  2087. And then

  2088. we hear the

  2089. voice of

  2090. the Lord

  2091. Jesus Christ

  2092. crying out,

  2093. I am the

  2094. good shepherd.

  2095. The good

  2096. shepherd lays

  2097. down his

  2098. life for

  2099. the sheep.

  2100. And then

  2101. we hear the

  2102. voice of

  2103. the apostle

  2104. Peter saying,

  2105. he himself,

  2106. Jesus,

  2107. bore our

  2108. sins in

  2109. his body

  2110. upon the

  2111. tree that

  2112. we might

  2113. die to

  2114. sin and

  2115. live to

  2116. righteousness.

  2117. By his

  2118. wounds you

  2119. have been

  2120. healed for

  2121. you were

  2122. straying like

  2123. sheep but

  2124. have now

  2125. returned to

  2126. the shepherd

  2127. and overseer

  2128. of your

  2129. souls.

  2130. On

  2131. account of

  2132. our sin

  2133. and unfaithfulness,

  2134. our straying

  2135. from God,

  2136. the Lord

  2137. Jesus Christ

  2138. was exiled

  2139. and forsaken

  2140. by God on

  2141. the cross.

  2142. He paid

  2143. the price

  2144. of our

  2145. sin.

  2146. He bore

  2147. the punishment

  2148. of our

  2149. unfaithfulness.

  2150. The Lord

  2151. who was our

  2152. shepherd bore

  2153. !

  2154. The Lord

  2155. who was our

  2156. shepherd bore

  2157. The cost of

  2158. our idolatry,

  2159. our greed,

  2160. our selfishness.

  2161. Through faith

  2162. in the good

  2163. shepherd Jesus

  2164. Christ, our

  2165. iniquity is

  2166. pardoned for

  2167. he has

  2168. received from

  2169. the Lord's

  2170. hand double

  2171. for all our

  2172. sins.

  2173. on the

  2174. cross

  2175. he paid

  2176. the price

  2177. and reconciled

  2178. us to

  2179. God.

  2180. This is

  2181. the grace

  2182. of the

  2183. shepherd of

  2184. whom we

  2185. read in

  2186. verse 11.

  2187. The shepherd

  2188. who tends

  2189. his flock

  2190. because he

  2191. gave himself

  2192. for his

  2193. flock.

  2194. The shepherd

  2195. who gathered

  2196. his flock

  2197. in those arms

  2198. he stretched

  2199. out on the

  2200. cross.

  2201. The shepherd

  2202. who carries

  2203. his lambs

  2204. near his

  2205. heart,

  2206. that heart

  2207. which stopped

  2208. beating for

  2209. three days

  2210. because he

  2211. was laid

  2212. in a tomb.

  2213. The shepherd

  2214. who gently

  2215. leads those

  2216. who have

  2217. young because

  2218. he was

  2219. harshly led

  2220. for them

  2221. to Mount

  2222. Calvary

  2223. where he

  2224. was crucified.

  2225. In the

  2226. old covenant

  2227. innocent sheep

  2228. were sacrificed

  2229. on behalf of

  2230. their sinful

  2231. shepherds.

  2232. In the new

  2233. covenant our

  2234. innocent shepherd

  2235. was sacrificed

  2236. on behalf of

  2237. his sinful

  2238. sheep.

  2239. But that

  2240. grace of

  2241. Christ which

  2242. has brought

  2243. us close

  2244. to God

  2245. continues

  2246. throughout

  2247. our lives

  2248. as Christian

  2249. believers

  2250. to bring

  2251. us closer

  2252. to him

  2253. still.

  2254. The story

  2255. of the

  2256. Christian

  2257. life

  2258. is the

  2259. story of

  2260. Christ's

  2261. continued

  2262. grace

  2263. in forgiving

  2264. our sin

  2265. in strengthening

  2266. us with

  2267. new dissolve

  2268. and giving

  2269. us the

  2270. inextinguishable

  2271. hope of

  2272. eternal life.

  2273. It is

  2274. grace

  2275. it is

  2276. whole grace

  2277. and it's

  2278. nothing but

  2279. grace.

  2280. grace.

  2281. Have you

  2282. failed

  2283. your

  2284. shepherd?

  2285. Have you

  2286. strayed from

  2287. your shepherd?

  2288. When you

  2289. return to

  2290. him

  2291. do not

  2292. expect the

  2293. harshness

  2294. of a

  2295. judge

  2296. anticipate

  2297. the grace

  2298. of a

  2299. shepherd.

  2300. Are you

  2301. exhausted in

  2302. his service

  2303. falling over

  2304. under the

  2305. burdens you're

  2306. carrying?

  2307. Go to

  2308. him because

  2309. he is your

  2310. shepherd and

  2311. ask him for

  2312. more grace

  2313. to help you

  2314. carry them.

  2315. Are you

  2316. fearful and

  2317. anxious for

  2318. your future?

  2319. Take your

  2320. anxieties to

  2321. Jesus and

  2322. pray for his

  2323. grace that he

  2324. may replace

  2325. your worry

  2326. with his

  2327. peace.

  2328. We have a

  2329. gracious

  2330. shepherd.

  2331. Therefore all

  2332. shall be well

  2333. with us.

  2334. we have a

  2335. glorious

  2336. shepherd,

  2337. we have a

  2338. gracious

  2339. shepherd,

  2340. then finally

  2341. we have

  2342. a gentle

  2343. shepherd,

  2344. a gentle

  2345. shepherd.

  2346. When I

  2347. was a

  2348. wee boy,

  2349. maybe

  2350. oh three

  2351. or four

  2352. years old

  2353. and I

  2354. wake up

  2355. at night

  2356. with fear

  2357. in my

  2358. heart

  2359. thinking there

  2360. was a

  2361. monster

  2362. under my

  2363. bed,

  2364. I would

  2365. creep into

  2366. my mum

  2367. and dad's

  2368. bed.

  2369. And my

  2370. dad would

  2371. put his

  2372. arm around

  2373. me and

  2374. I'd put

  2375. my head

  2376. on his

  2377. chest and

  2378. I could

  2379. hear the

  2380. beating of

  2381. his heart.

  2382. And as a

  2383. tiny wee

  2384. boy I was

  2385. then able to

  2386. go back to

  2387. sleep because

  2388. no matter if

  2389. the sky was

  2390. falling down,

  2391. no matter if

  2392. really there

  2393. was a monster

  2394. under my

  2395. bed and it

  2396. wasn't just a

  2397. figment of

  2398. my imagination,

  2399. I couldn't

  2400. have been

  2401. safer,

  2402. more at

  2403. peace,

  2404. more contented

  2405. than when

  2406. my wee

  2407. heady was

  2408. on my

  2409. dad's

  2410. chest and

  2411. I was

  2412. listening to

  2413. the beat

  2414. of his

  2415. heart.

  2416. Nearly

  2417. 50 years

  2418. later I

  2419. can still

  2420. remember how

  2421. loved and

  2422. safe I

  2423. felt.

  2424. Now we

  2425. could talk

  2426. about the

  2427. gentleness of

  2428. our glorious

  2429. and gracious

  2430. shepherd from

  2431. each of the

  2432. four clauses

  2433. in verse

  2434. 11 but it's

  2435. the third

  2436. which appeals

  2437. to me

  2438. most,

  2439. maybe to

  2440. you also.

  2441. He will

  2442. carry them

  2443. in his

  2444. bosom,

  2445. he will

  2446. carry them

  2447. in his

  2448. bosom.

  2449. Our

  2450. shepherd king

  2451. having gathered

  2452. us in his

  2453. arms draws

  2454. us in those

  2455. powerful arms

  2456. into his

  2457. chest so

  2458. that we may

  2459. hear the

  2460. beating of

  2461. his heart.

  2462. He does

  2463. for us what

  2464. my father

  2465. used to do

  2466. for me,

  2467. he puts

  2468. his arm

  2469. around us

  2470. and he

  2471. draws us

  2472. close.

  2473. We were

  2474. very much

  2475. by ourselves

  2476. we were

  2477. alone and

  2478. insecure,

  2479. afraid and

  2480. worried.

  2481. The darkness

  2482. was oppressive

  2483. to us

  2484. and the

  2485. loneliness

  2486. was complete.

  2487. There seemed

  2488. to be no

  2489. light in

  2490. our lives

  2491. and no

  2492. hope.

  2493. But he

  2494. gathered us

  2495. in his

  2496. arms,

  2497. those arms

  2498. of his

  2499. which are

  2500. so strong

  2501. and so

  2502. powerful

  2503. and yet

  2504. so gentle.

  2505. In Sunday

  2506. school we

  2507. learned the

  2508. chorus,

  2509. my God

  2510. is so

  2511. big,

  2512. so strong

  2513. and so

  2514. mighty,

  2515. there's

  2516. nothing

  2517. that he

  2518. cannot

  2519. do.

  2520. As

  2521. children we

  2522. would all

  2523. do the

  2524. actions,

  2525. came to

  2526. the strong,

  2527. mighty,

  2528. strike the

  2529. bodybuilder's

  2530. pose,

  2531. show off

  2532. these

  2533. bicep

  2534. muscles.

  2535. Well it's

  2536. true,

  2537. our God

  2538. is so

  2539. strong and

  2540. so mighty

  2541. but those

  2542. strong and

  2543. mighty arms

  2544. they're so

  2545. tender,

  2546. they gently

  2547. gather us

  2548. to himself,

  2549. such tender

  2550. arms they

  2551. hold us

  2552. close to

  2553. his heart.

  2554. The strong

  2555. arms of

  2556. our king

  2557. are the

  2558. gentle

  2559. arms of

  2560. our shepherd.

  2561. In John

  2562. 10,

  2563. 27,

  2564. Jesus

  2565. says,

  2566. my sheep

  2567. hear my

  2568. voice,

  2569. I know

  2570. them and

  2571. they follow

  2572. me.

  2573. I give

  2574. them eternal

  2575. life and

  2576. they will

  2577. never perish,

  2578. no one will

  2579. ever snatch

  2580. them from

  2581. my hand.

  2582. Once the

  2583. strong arms

  2584. of our

  2585. shepherd has

  2586. us,

  2587. no one,

  2588. no one,

  2589. not even

  2590. ourselves and

  2591. our doubts

  2592. can snatch

  2593. us from

  2594. his grasp

  2595. and he

  2596. holds us

  2597. so close

  2598. that we

  2599. may hear

  2600. the beat

  2601. of his

  2602. heart

  2603. and every

  2604. beat of

  2605. his heart

  2606. is for

  2607. us.

  2608. Every beat

  2609. of the

  2610. heart of

  2611. God

  2612. echoes

  2613. with his

  2614. love for

  2615. us.

  2616. Once we

  2617. were far

  2618. away from

  2619. him,

  2620. lost and

  2621. fearful,

  2622. rather like

  2623. a child

  2624. waking in

  2625. the dark

  2626. with a

  2627. monster

  2628. under its

  2629. bed.

  2630. But now

  2631. he has

  2632. gathered us

  2633. up in

  2634. his arms,

  2635. he is

  2636. holding us

  2637. close to

  2638. himself and

  2639. he lets us

  2640. hear the

  2641. beating of

  2642. his loving

  2643. heart for

  2644. us.

  2645. When I

  2646. was a

  2647. wee

  2648. balach,

  2649. I couldn't

  2650. have felt

  2651. safer,

  2652. more at

  2653. peace and

  2654. more contented

  2655. than when

  2656. my dad's

  2657. arms were

  2658. around me

  2659. and my

  2660. head was

  2661. on his

  2662. chest.

  2663. The sky

  2664. could be

  2665. falling down

  2666. and I

  2667. wouldn't

  2668. have cared

  2669. he would

  2670. keep me

  2671. safe.

  2672. I knew

  2673. he would.

  2674. When our

  2675. glorious,

  2676. gracious and

  2677. gentle shepherd

  2678. has gathered

  2679. us up in

  2680. his arms and

  2681. is holding

  2682. us close to

  2683. his heart,

  2684. we feel

  2685. so safe,

  2686. so much

  2687. at peace,

  2688. so very

  2689. contented.

  2690. When I

  2691. fear my

  2692. faith may

  2693. fail,

  2694. Christ will

  2695. hold me

  2696. fast.

  2697. When the

  2698. tempter would

  2699. prevail,

  2700. he will

  2701. hold me

  2702. fast.

  2703. I could

  2704. never keep

  2705. my hold

  2706. through life's

  2707. fearful path.

  2708. For my

  2709. love is

  2710. often cold,

  2711. he must

  2712. hold me

  2713. fast.

  2714. Yes,

  2715. he holds

  2716. us fast,

  2717. such beautiful

  2718. words,

  2719. but where

  2720. he holds

  2721. us fast

  2722. is more

  2723. beautiful

  2724. still.

  2725. He holds

  2726. us fast

  2727. close to

  2728. his heart.

  2729. His arms

  2730. are strong,

  2731. his heart

  2732. beats with

  2733. love for

  2734. us so

  2735. powerfully,

  2736. so rhythmically,

  2737. his grip

  2738. upon us is

  2739. so gentle,

  2740. so tender.

  2741. Many of

  2742. Glasgow's

  2743. professional

  2744. rugby team,

  2745. the Glasgow

  2746. Warriors,

  2747. train at my

  2748. local gym.

  2749. Now,

  2750. some of

  2751. these rugby

  2752. players are

  2753. giants.

  2754. in every

  2755. way,

  2756. well over

  2757. six feet

  2758. tall.

  2759. They've

  2760. got muscles

  2761. in places

  2762. I don't

  2763. have

  2764. places.

  2765. But

  2766. sometimes

  2767. you'll

  2768. see one

  2769. of them

  2770. in the

  2771. swimming pool

  2772. with his

  2773. young child.

  2774. Now,

  2775. these guys,

  2776. I mean,

  2777. they might

  2778. be muscly

  2779. giants,

  2780. but they

  2781. hold their

  2782. little children

  2783. in that

  2784. swimming pool

  2785. with such

  2786. strength,

  2787. such

  2788. tenderness.

  2789. Even

  2790. though that

  2791. child can't

  2792. swim,

  2793. that young

  2794. child is

  2795. never as

  2796. safe as

  2797. when it's

  2798. giant of

  2799. a father

  2800. is holding

  2801. it close.

  2802. Neither

  2803. are we

  2804. safer,

  2805. neither are

  2806. you safer,

  2807. than when

  2808. you have

  2809. your glorious

  2810. and gracious

  2811. shepherd holding

  2812. you close to

  2813. his heart.

  2814. We might feel

  2815. as if we're

  2816. drowning in

  2817. life's sorrows,

  2818. but he's

  2819. carrying us.

  2820. We might feel

  2821. confused and

  2822. full of

  2823. questions,

  2824. but he's

  2825. holding us.

  2826. We might be

  2827. tired and

  2828. exhausted,

  2829. but he draws

  2830. us close.

  2831. We might be

  2832. mentally and

  2833. physically dying,

  2834. but he lets

  2835. us hear the

  2836. beat of his

  2837. gentle heart.

  2838. Well, to

  2839. apply this

  2840. great truth

  2841. of our

  2842. Lord being

  2843. our glorious,

  2844. gracious,

  2845. and gentle

  2846. shepherd,

  2847. let me suggest

  2848. that though

  2849. his hold on

  2850. us is

  2851. ultimate,

  2852. we would

  2853. do well

  2854. to do

  2855. everything we

  2856. can to

  2857. hold on

  2858. to him.

  2859. We would

  2860. do well

  2861. to do

  2862. everything we

  2863. can to

  2864. hold on

  2865. to him.

  2866. We need

  2867. to abide

  2868. in him,

  2869. to walk

  2870. closely to

  2871. him,

  2872. to listen

  2873. carefully to

  2874. the voice

  2875. of our

  2876. shepherd through

  2877. the reading

  2878. of his

  2879. word,

  2880. and letting

  2881. him hear

  2882. the bleating

  2883. of our

  2884. voices as

  2885. we pray,

  2886. daily being

  2887. strengthened by

  2888. the grace of

  2889. his spirit as

  2890. we live in

  2891. him.

  2892. God's

  2893. but there

  2894. may be

  2895. some here

  2896. this morning

  2897. for whom

  2898. the Lord

  2899. is not

  2900. your shepherd.

  2901. You're still

  2902. lost,

  2903. well maybe

  2904. you don't

  2905. think you

  2906. are,

  2907. but you

  2908. are,

  2909. and you're

  2910. straying in

  2911. the desert,

  2912. and you're

  2913. dying on

  2914. the inside.

  2915. The good

  2916. shepherd Jesus

  2917. Christ extended

  2918. wide his arms

  2919. on the cross

  2920. to embrace

  2921. a sinful

  2922. world,

  2923. and he

  2924. invites

  2925. every one

  2926. of us

  2927. today to

  2928. enter that

  2929. embrace.

  2930. The shepherd

  2931. who died

  2932. for his

  2933. sheep,

  2934. he invites

  2935. us to

  2936. believe and

  2937. to trust

  2938. in him,

  2939. to let

  2940. him tend

  2941. us,

  2942. and gather

  2943. us up in

  2944. his gentle

  2945. arms,

  2946. to let us

  2947. crawl into

  2948. bed beside

  2949. him,

  2950. as he puts

  2951. his arm

  2952. around us,

  2953. so that we

  2954. may hear

  2955. his heart.

  2956. So my

  2957. last question

  2958. for you

  2959. today is

  2960. this,

  2961. will you,

  2962. will you

  2963. today let

  2964. him draw

  2965. you close,

  2966. so that

  2967. you may

  2968. hear the

  2969. beat of

  2970. the loving

  2971. heart of

  2972. your loving

  2973. shepherd.

  2974. Amen.

  2975. We shall

  2976. close now

  2977. as we sing

  2978. what is

  2979. perhaps our

  2980. favorite

  2981. psalm,

  2982. Psalm 23

  2983. from the

  2984. Scottish

  2985. Psalter,

  2986. page 229,

  2987. the Lord's

  2988. my shepherd,

  2989. I'll not

  2990. want.

  2991. He makes

  2992. me down

  2993. to lie

  2994. in pastures

  2995. green,

  2996. he leadeth me

  2997. the quiet

  2998. waters

  2999. by.

  3000. the Lord's

  3001. my shepherd,

  3002. I'll not

  3003. want,

  3004. he makes

  3005. me down

  3006. to lie,

  3007. the

  3008. and

  3009. the

  3010. water

  3011. and

  3012. he

  3013. he

  3014. !

  3015. he

  3016. groan

  3017. The quiet waters shine

3018. And so be done, restore again

3019. And be to all the pain

3020. Within the paths of righteousness

  3021. In God's own insane

3022. And though I walk in death's dark pale

3023. Yet will I fear the hill

3024. For thou art with me on thy road

3025. And shall be calm for still

3026. My table thou hast furnished

3027. In presence of my foes

  3028. My heaven does

  3029. With oil and light

  3030. And my cup overflow

  3031. To death and mercy

  3032. Of my life

  3033. Shall surely follow me

  3034. And in the mountains

  3035. Forevermore

3036. My dwelling place shall be

  3037. Receive God's blessing

3038. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ

  3039. The love of God

3040. And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

  3041. Be with you all

  3042. Amen

  3043. Thank you

  3044. Thank you.
