  1. Psalm 34, the Sing Psalms version on page 40 of the psalm books. We're going to sing from verse 1 to verse 10.

  2. ! Psalm 34, the tune is Peter's ham.

  3. At all times I will bless the Lord, I will praise him with my voice.

  4. Because I glory in the Lord, let troubled souls rejoice.

  5. Together let us praise the Lord, exalt his name with me.

  6. I sought the Lord, his answer came from fear, he set me free.

  7. We'll sing from verse 1 to 10 to God's praise. We stand to sing.

  8. Amen.

  9. Together let us praise the Lord, exalt his name with me.

  10. I sought the Lord, his answer came from fear, she set me free.

  11. They look to him and shine with joy, they are not good to shame.

  12. This suffering and cry to the Lord, from whom deliverance came.

  13. The angel of the Lord, exalt his name with me.

  14. All those who fear and honour him, he sets his people free.

  15. The angel of the Lord, exalt his name with me.

  16. And hunger for their good.

  17. But those who wait upon the Lord will not lack any truth.

  18. Let's bow our heads in a word of prayer. Let us pray.

  19. Lord, our gracious God, we come just seeking to worship you and thankful that at all times we can bless the Lord and praise you with our voice.

  20. That we can come together with that joy in our singing just now, lifting our voices to you, raising up our praise to you.

  21. For you alone are worthy of it.

  22. And we thank you for this renewed opportunity.

  23. We thank you for this time together where we can reflect on your word to us.

  24. And above all, reflecting upon what has been done for us in your giving your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who came to take away the sin of the world.

  25. And we thank you that we come to do this in remembrance of him.

  26. And we come humbly before you.

  27. We come just seeking to know your presence with us, to know your peace upon us.

  28. We thank you that the psalm that we have sung has reminded us that we can come and taste and see that God is good who trusts.

  29. And him is blessed.

  30. And so we pray, Lord, that we would all come to taste of your goodness today, whether we are sitting at the table or whether we are looking on, that today our hearts would hunger for you, that we would long for you, that we would long for you in a way that maybe we haven't before, to see your goodness with us, to see your blessing upon us.

  31. And we do thank you for your word that guides us.

  32. We thank you for the word that we have before us today.

  33. And as we open it up together, we pray that we would know your spirit guiding us in it, that we would know your voice speaking to us through your word.

  34. For it's so precious, your word.

  35. It is a word that gives life to our soul.

  36. It's a word that became flesh and dwelt among us, as we read last evening.

  37. And we thank you that it is a living and an active word, that it has power, even today as it has at all times.

  38. It is still powerful today to convict and to convert.

  39. And we pray that that power would be known with us today as well.

  40. The conviction that we come under, when we realise how far short we fall of your glory, when we recognise the sin in our hearts, when we recognise who we have sinned against.

  41. But yet we thank you that your word is able to convert, to turn us from our sin and to turn to you as our Lord and as our God.

  42. And so we ask, Lord, that your power would be known with us today through your word and spirit.

  43. And that as we come to the sacrament too, that, Lord, all that we do there would be giving glory to you.

  44. For we are unworthy of it, Lord, but we thank you for the one who came to bear our sin on the cross.

  45. The one who was silent before his accusers.

  46. And the one who was led like a lamb to the slaughter.

  47. The one who bore our sin on the tree.

  48. But the one over whom death had no hold.

  49. For even as he gave his life, he took it up again.

  50. And we thank you for that reminder on the first day of the week as we meet.

  51. That he is risen.

  52. And that in Jesus Christ we have a risen Lord, a risen saviour.

  53. We have one who is even now at your right hand.

  54. And we offer our prayers in and through him.

  55. Asking, Lord, forgiveness for all our sin.

  56. So may you bless us together.

  57. Thankful for the fact that you are building your church.

  58. Not just here, but throughout the world.

  59. That you are one who is active.

  60. The one who is working.

  61. The one who is mighty and sovereign over all lands and nations and people.

  62. And we thank you that you have your people.

  63. That you are calling them to yourself.

  64. And that throughout the world today where your name is praised and glorified.

  65. That you would be calling sinners to yourself.

  66. That you would be calling people to turn to you.

  67. And to weep over their sin.

  68. But to rejoice in the joy of salvation.

  69. And so we pray, Lord, for all who go out with your word today to all ends of the earth.

  70. That the promise of your word will be fulfilled.

  71. That it will not return empty or void.

  72. But accomplish all that you have sent it forth for.

  73. And so bless us together even here.

  74. And all your people who gather in your name.

  75. Remember us in our homes and in our families.

  76. In our communities as a whole.

  77. We know, Lord, that every need we have is known unto you.

  78. Every burden that we carry.

  79. Every prayer that we offer up.

  80. You hear.

  81. And are able to answer according to your will.

  82. We do pray for our communities.

  83. We pray for all our people.

  84. We thank you for our young ones who are in Sunday school.

  85. And tweenies and creche and Bible class.

  86. We thank you for the many that we see coming.

  87. Week by week.

  88. And thank you for each home and family that they come from.

  89. We pray your peace and your blessing over them.

  90. And we thank you too, Lord, for those in different needs at this time.

  91. We know that the needs around us are so many.

  92. There are those who are grieving and mourning.

  93. We thank you, Lord, for the comfort.

  94. For the grace that sustains and keeps in these times.

  95. We remember those who are unwell at home or in hospital.

  96. We pray for them, Lord, that you would surround them with your loving arms.

  97. That you would uphold them and keep them also.

  98. And even maybe those who are tuning in online today from home or hospital.

  99. We thank you for the ways that we can still communicate the gospel in that way.

  100. And that they can feel part of our congregation here.

  101. And we pray that they would know that union that is found in Christ.

  102. That we are one in Christ Jesus.

  103. And even though they may not take part in the Lord's Supper physically.

  104. That they would feel and know your presence.

  105. Even remembering their Lord and their Saviour where they are.

  106. And so, Lord, we plead with you to be in our midst.

  107. To do us good.

  108. To guide us and to help us.

  109. To encourage us and to strengthen us.

  110. Through your word and through all that we do today in our fellowship with one another.

  111. That you would bless us with your unity.

  112. With your presence.

  113. And that we would glory in the Lord.

  114. So hear our prayers.

  115. Continue with us.

  116. And go before us, pardoning our sin.

  117. That's all we ask.

  118. We ask in Jesus' name.

  119. Amen.

  120. Amen.

  121. We're going to read together now from the word of God.

  122. Two readings we're going to have.

  123. First of all, in the Old Testament.

  124. In the book of Isaiah.

  125. In chapter 53.

  126. Isaiah chapter 53.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  127. Just a few verses from this chapter.

  128. From verse 4 to verse 7.

  129. And then we'll turn.

  130. And our second reading is in John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  131. So our first reading in Isaiah chapter 53.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  132. You'll find it around page 742 of the church Bibles.

  133. And at verse 4.

  134. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

  135. Yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.

  136. But he was wounded for our transgressions.

  137. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  138. Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace.

  139. And with his stripes we are healed.

  140. All we like sheep have gone astray.

  141. We have turned everyone to his own way.

  142. And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

  143. He was oppressed and he was afflicted.

  144. Yet he opened not his mouth.

  145. Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter.

  146. And like a sheep that before its shearers is silent.

  147. So he opened not his mouth.

  148. Then we'll turn to our second reading in the Gospel of John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  149. We're going to read from verse 14 down to verse 30.

  150. We find this about page 1091 of the church Bibles.

  151. Gospel of John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  152. I'm reading from verse 14 to verse 30.

  153. Here we find Jesus before Pilate in this chapter.

  154. Pilate speaking to him and asking him questions.

  155. And in verse 9 you see that he speaks there to him.

  156. He entered his quarters again and said to Jesus,

  157. Where are you from?

  158. But Jesus gave him no answer.

  159. He was silent as we see what we read in Isaiah 53.

  160. But then we take up our reading at verse 14.

  161. Now it was the day of preparation of the Passover.

  162. It was about the sixth hour.

  163. He said to the Jews, Behold your king.

  164. They cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him.

  165. Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your king?

  166. The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

  167. So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

  168. So they took Jesus and he went out, bearing his own cross,

  169. to the place called the place of the skull,

  170. which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.

  171. There they crucified him, and with him two others,

  172. one on either side, and Jesus between them.

  173. Pilate, who wrote an inscription and put it on the cross,

  174. it read, Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews.

  175. Many of the Jews read this inscription,

  176. for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,

  177. and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek.

  178. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate,

  179. Do not write, The king of the Jews,

  180. but rather this man said, I am the king of the Jews.

  181. Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.

  182. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus,

  183. they took his garments and divided them into four parts,

  184. one part for each soldier, and also his tunic.

  185. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

  186. So they said to one another,

  187. Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it,

  188. to see whose it shall be.

  189. This was to fulfill the scripture which says,

  190. They divided my garments among them,

  191. and for my clothing they cast lots.

  192. So the soldiers did these things,

  193. but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother,

  194. and his mother's sister,

  195. Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

  196. When Jesus saw his mother,

  197. and the disciples whom he loved standing nearby,

  198. he said to his mother,

  199. Woman, behold your son.

  200. Then he said to the disciple,

  201. Behold your mother.

  202. And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

  203. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished,

  204. said to fulfill the scripture,

  205. I thirst.

  206. A jar full of sour wine stood there,

  207. So they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch,

  208. and held it to his mouth.

  209. When Jesus had received the sour wine,

  210. he said,

  211. It is finished.

  212. And he bowed his head,

  213. and gave up his spirit.

  214. Amen.

  215. And may God bless these readings from his word.

  216. Before we come to consider these words together,

  217. we're going to sing once again,

  218. this time in Gaelic,

  219. in Psalm 23.

  220. We're singing two verses in Gaelic.

  221. You'll find them on the front of the order of service.

  222. The words are there on the bulletin sheet,

  223. I should say.

  224. The words are on the front of the bulletin sheet,

  225. in both Gaelic and English.

  226. We'll be singing this psalm.

  227. We remain seated for the singing of the Gaelic psalm.

  228. The Lord's my shepherd,

  229. I'll not want these well-known words.

  230. We remain seated and sing this psalm in Gaelic.

  231. We remain seated.

  232. We remain seated.

  233. We remain seated.

  234. We remain seated.

  235. Thank you.

  236. Thank you.

  237. Isaiah 53 verse 7.

    Isaiah 53:7

  238. He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet opened not his mouth.

  239. Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter is really the text that we have this morning.

  240. We began last evening with a theme of looking at the Lamb of God over this weekend.

  241. And last night we were looking at the opening chapter in John's Gospel where John the Baptist

  242. looked and saw Jesus coming towards him and said these well-known words,

  243. Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  244. And that is really what we're looking at over this weekend.

  245. The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  246. Last evening we thought of it under the heading, The Lamb of God Promised.

  247. We saw how the Lamb of God was promised, seeing it from the Old Testament and fulfillment into the New.

  248. And this morning we're considering the Lamb of God punished.

  249. The purpose for which the Lamb of God came was that he would give his life.

  250. And what we see in Isaiah here is Isaiah depicting it in that way.

  251. The Lamb that is led to the slaughter, the Lamb who died for our sins.

  252. It's amazing how often people use phrases without realizing where they come from.

  253. How often do you hear people saying things like,

  254. The blind leading the blind.

  255. Or by the skin of our teeth.

  256. Or no peace or no rest for the wicked.

  257. They're almost everyday occurrences when you hear these kinds of phrases being used.

  258. But what's amazing is that people don't realize the seriousness of them.

  259. Because they are from the Word of God.

  260. They are all words that we find in the Scriptures.

  261. The blind leading the blind is found in Matthew and Luke's Gospel.

  262. By the skin of our teeth is found in the book of Job, chapter 19.

    Job 19 chapter mention

  263. Where he says,

  264. I am nothing but skin and bones.

  265. I have escaped with only the skin of my teeth.

  266. And you also have no rest or no peace.

  267. For the wicked, Isaiah uses that phrase twice.

  268. In chapter 48 and chapter 57.

  269. And so there are phrases, everyday phrases,

  270. that are used.

  271. And yet they don't realize where they come from.

  272. And perhaps one of the most serious ones in that sense,

  273. not recognizing that it's from the Word of God,

  274. is people who say they were like lambs to the slaughter.

  275. They were led like lambs to the slaughter.

  276. Without thinking or realizing where it comes from,

  277. without realizing the background to these words,

  278. it can be used so flippantly.

  279. They were just like lambs to the slaughter.

  280. And in the passages we have read,

  281. first of all in Isaiah,

  282. here and then in the Gospel of John,

  283. we see just how significant this phrase is.

  284. Led like a lamb to the slaughter.

  285. And how for all believers,

  286. these words are such a key to the hope

  287. that we have of salvation in Jesus Christ.

  288. As John the Baptist said,

  289. Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  290. What Isaiah is saying here is,

  291. Behold the lamb of God who was led,

  292. the Savior who was led like a lamb to the slaughter.

  293. And when we think of how this phrase is used today,

  294. it's often applied to people being led somewhere

  295. where unbeknown to them,

  296. something terrible is going to happen.

  297. And I remember I've read a number of books

  298. from the Second World War

  299. and especially about the suffering

  300. of those who were in concentration camps.

  301. And they were promised peace.

  302. They were promised work.

  303. They were given all these promises.

  304. And yet the phrase that is often used of them

  305. was they were led like lambs to the slaughter.

  306. They didn't realize where they were going.

  307. But when you look at the Lord Jesus

  308. and when you see these words applied to him,

  309. that he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,

  310. it wasn't that he didn't know where he was going.

  311. He knew what lay ahead of him.

  312. He had given the prediction of his death

  313. at least three times before it came to pass.

  314. He had told his disciples,

  315. he had told his people

  316. that he was going to give his life.

  317. And so he knew where he was going.

  318. And yet he was led like a lamb to the slaughter

  319. because he was going there

  320. because it was required to save sinners,

  321. to save you and to save me from our sins.

  322. Behold, the lamb of God

  323. who takes away the sins of the world

  324. is this lamb who was led to the slaughter.

  325. And it is this lamb that we remember together today.

  326. It's this lamb that we see represented before us

  327. in the bread and the wine.

  328. And so I want us to think of the lamb again today,

  329. the lamb who was led to the slaughter.

  330. And we're going to think about it under three headings.

  331. And the first one is the lamb who was silent.

  332. The lamb who was silent.

  333. And then we're going to think about the lamb who is Lord.

  334. And then thirdly, the lamb who was led.

  335. So the first thing we're going to think about

  336. is the lamb who was silent.

  337. What we have in our text there in verse 7 of Isaiah 53.

  338. Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter

  339. and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent.

  340. So he opened not his mouth.

  341. He opened not his mouth.

  342. The silence of Christ is something

  343. that leaves an impression in itself.

  344. We know that there are words that he spoke

  345. as we see in the Gospels,

  346. but there are times when he does not answer.

  347. There are times when he says nothing

  348. in response to questions that are put to him.

  349. We see it in the account that Luke gives

  350. where he's before Herod

  351. in all the questions that Herod was asking of him.

  352. He said nothing.

  353. And we see it here in the Gospel of John

  354. as well in verse 9, as I mentioned earlier,

  355. when he was asked, where are you from?

  356. But Jesus gave him no answer.

  357. You have it in the Gospel of Mark,

  358. again with Pilate.

  359. When he was before Pilate,

  360. Pilate asked him again, saying,

  361. do you answer nothing,

  362. seeing how many things they testify against you,

  363. but Jesus still answered nothing.

  364. So that Pilate marveled, it says in the Gospel of Mark.

  365. He marveled at the silence of Jesus before him.

  366. Pilate was unable to find fault with him.

  367. Herod couldn't find fault with him,

  368. and yet they both see him innocent before him,

  369. and yet silent, giving no response.

  370. What would you do if you were falsely accused?

  371. Would you stay silent?

  372. Surely you would stand and defend yourself

  373. to say all these accusations are false.

  374. There is no truth in them.

  375. Well, imagine having to stand before accusers,

  376. and the punishment is death if you are found guilty.

  377. Would you say nothing?

  378. Would you remain silent?

  379. Well, Jesus is here before his accusers,

  380. and he knows the outcome of this trial,

  381. that he is going to the cross,

  382. and yet he opens not his mouth.

  383. Why was he silent?

  384. Well, he wasn't there to defend himself.

  385. He was there as the Lamb of God

  386. who had come to take away the sin of the world.

  387. He was there not to defend himself,

  388. but to defend us,

  389. to defend you and to defend me.

  390. And therefore he couldn't open his mouth and defend us,

  391. because we are sinners.

  392. He couldn't open his mouth and say,

  393. my people are innocent,

  394. because we are guilty.

  395. But here is the Lamb of God

  396. who takes away the sin of the world.

  397. And so because he had come for his people,

  398. he opened not his mouth.

  399. He was silent.

  400. He didn't defend himself.

  401. Because as Isaiah makes clear for us

  402. in our reading in the verses just before,

  403. when he speaks of, in verse 6,

  404. So we like sheep have gone astray,

  405. we have turned everyone to his own way,

  406. and the Lord has laid on him

  407. the iniquity of us all.

  408. We have gone astray,

  409. but the Lamb of God has come

  410. to take away the sin of the world.

  411. The preacher Andrew Bonner,

  412. he often spoke about an illustration about sheep.

  413. And he used to reflect on how you would see sheep

  414. often get themselves into situations of trouble.

  415. And there was one particular story

  416. often recounted was

  417. how sheep would often jump down onto a ledge

  418. where there was grass that looked so sweet.

  419. But what they would find was

  420. that where they had jumped down,

  421. they couldn't get off.

  422. They couldn't get back out of the situation

  423. that they'd put themselves in.

  424. And what caught his attention was this,

  425. how the shepherd,

  426. instead of immediately going down to the sheep

  427. and rescuing it,

  428. would leave it.

  429. Would leave it for a few days even

  430. until it had eaten all the grass,

  431. until it was starting to get tired and weary.

  432. And only then would the shepherd

  433. at that point go down with a rope

  434. to lift the sheep out from the ledge

  435. it was stuck on.

  436. And he would ask,

  437. why?

  438. Why don't you just go down

  439. and rescue the sheep immediately?

  440. And the shepherd would say,

  441. well, if I did that,

  442. the sheep are so foolish

  443. that they would just dash off the edge of the cliff.

  444. You have to wait

  445. until they're tired and weary.

  446. And only then

  447. can you go down and rescue them

  448. when they're helpless.

  449. And he was making this illustration

  450. to say that is the way with us.

  451. All we like sheep have gone astray.

  452. We've turned each to our own way.

  453. But we're so busy in what we're doing,

  454. we're not listening to God.

  455. We're not listening to what his word is saying to us.

  456. That we are in danger,

  457. that we are in our sin lost.

  458. We won't listen until that point

  459. where we are made to feel helpless

  460. and hopeless.

  461. And only then is he able to save.

  462. We are sheep who have gone astray.

  463. But we have a shepherd who has come.

  464. But he has come as a lamb.

  465. He has come as a lamb.

  466. He has come as one of us

  467. to take away our sin.

  468. In our action in coming to the Lord's table today,

  469. we do so in silence.

  470. And yet our actions speak loudly.

  471. What we are doing,

  472. we are showing that we are not

  473. struggling and shouting anymore

  474. against the Lord,

  475. but that we are resting in Christ,

  476. our Saviour.

  477. We are still before him.

  478. But maybe you're sitting,

  479. looking on today as well,

  480. and you're still in that restless place.

  481. You're still in that point in life

  482. where you're still like the sheep

  483. who has gone astray,

  484. who turned to your own way.

  485. But the Lord is speaking to you as well.

  486. And he is saying,

  487. Be still,

  488. and come to me.

  489. The one who was silent,

  490. the one who opened not his mouth,

  491. the one who was led like a lamb

  492. to the slaughter,

  493. the lamb of God,

  494. who came to take away the sin of the world.

  495. It's the one that we are to behold

  496. and to look at today.

  497. So the first thing there we have

  498. is the lamb who was silent.

  499. The second thing we have

  500. is the lamb who is Lord.

  501. And we notice this in Isaiah speaking about it as well,

  502. how he was oppressed and afflicted,

  503. yet he opened not his mouth.

  504. Why did he do that?

  505. Because he had authority,

  506. because he had power.

  507. He was Lord.

  508. And we see it too in the Gospel of John.

  509. Especially there we're going to reflect

  510. for a few moments on this point,

  511. the lamb who is Lord,

  512. we see it here in different ways.

  513. We see it first with Pilate.

  514. Pilate is an interesting character

  515. as you look at him here

  516. when he's got Jesus before him.

  517. He finds no fault with him.

  518. And it's so many of the things that Pilate says

  519. that make you wonder just where he was.

  520. Pilate said to him in verse 38 of chapter 18,

  521. What is truth?

  522. What a question to ask.

  523. What is truth?

  524. There's this kind of wondering

  525. and looking and seeing this Jesus.

  526. And he's saying,

  527. What is truth?

  528. And in the whole encounter with Pilate and Jesus

  529. and the questions that are back and forth,

  530. you see that there is an interest

  531. being stirred up in him.

  532. At one point,

  533. he just wanted to give him away to Herod.

  534. You make the decision almost.

  535. Just take it out of my hands.

  536. He doesn't want to make this decision

  537. and yet he comes to the point,

  538. as we all do,

  539. where we have to decide,

  540. What will you do with Christ?

  541. And Pilate here,

  542. he sees him as king.

  543. He says in there in verse 14,

  544. Now it was the day of preparation of the Passover.

  545. It was about the sixth hour.

  546. He said to the Jews,

  547. Behold your king.

  548. But they cried out,

  549. Away with him,

  550. away with him.

  551. Shall I crucify your king?

  552. He said.

  553. We have no king,

  554. but Caesar was their response.

  555. So there's this debate going on.

  556. Who is Lord?

  557. And Pilate is always saying,

  558. Here is your king.

  559. Here is your Lord.

  560. And they're saying,

  561. He is no lord to us.

  562. We have no lord.

  563. We have no king,

  564. but Caesar.

  565. Caesar.

  566. So there's this dilemma going on.

  567. And that's the way we can often come as well.

  568. We have this dilemma of,

  569. Well, who is our Lord?

  570. What is truth?

  571. What can make me come to the Lord's table?

  572. Can I come to the Lord's table?

  573. We're being torn in different directions.

  574. We can try and avoid the whole subject of Jesus ourselves as well.

  575. We can say,

  576. Well, it's not for me,

  577. but there's no hiding from Jesus.

  578. And as Jesus is taken away,

  579. the chief priests came to him in verse 21,

  580. Do not write,

  581. The king of the Jews,

  582. but rather,

  583. This man said,

  584. I am the king of the Jews.

  585. But Pilate's answered,

  586. What I have written,

  587. I have written.

  588. I am the king.

  589. The king of the Jews is what he kept.

  590. There was something he was seeing.

  591. That this Jesus,

  592. this Christ,

  593. he was Lord.

  594. And that's the question we have to answer today as well.

  595. Who is he to us?

  596. Is he your Lord?

  597. Is he your king?

  598. And if he is,

  599. you come.

  600. Because he is Lord.

  601. He is God of all.

  602. We are reminded too of how he is Lord

  603. and the reaction of the soldiers as we see here.

  604. In verse 23,

  605. when the soldiers had crucified Jesus,

  606. they took his garments

  607. and divided them into four parts,

  608. one part for each soldier,

  609. also his tunic.

  610. But the tunic was seamless,

  611. woven into one piece from top to bottom.

  612. So they said to one another,

  613. Let us not tear it,

  614. but cast lots

  615. to see whose it shall be.

  616. And this was to fulfill scripture,

  617. which says,

  618. He divided my garments among them,

  619. and for my clothing

  620. they cast lots.

  621. It's an interesting thing here

  622. that what's the point here

  623. that they cast lots for his garments.

  624. One of the things that people speak about here

  625. is the garment,

  626. the tunic especially,

  627. was woven in one piece

  628. from top to bottom.

  629. And that there's a significance in that.

  630. And that there was a change

  631. coming into the system now.

  632. A change coming into the world.

  633. Because as we were looking at

  634. last night,

  635. behold the Lamb of God.

  636. The Lamb of God

  637. was the Lamb that was slain

  638. once a year

  639. for the forgiveness of sin.

  640. And there was a high priest

  641. who would take the Lamb

  642. into the Holy of Holies.

  643. And only he could go in.

  644. And the high priest,

  645. we are told in Exodus 39,

  646. would wear a tunic

  647. that was seamless,

  648. that was made in one piece,

  649. representing,

  650. going in without blemish

  651. or without flaw.

  652. And here we find

  653. that the garment,

  654. the tunic that Jesus was wearing,

  655. it was in one piece,

  656. seamless,

  657. woven from top to bottom.

  658. And there's significance in this.

  659. In who Jesus is being seen as.

  660. He is now going to be

  661. the great high priest.

  662. And the night before

  663. Jesus' crucifixion,

  664. in Mark 14, verse 61,

    Mark 14:61

  665. again he was appearing

  666. before the high priest.

  667. And the high priest asked him,

  668. Are you the Christ,

  669. the Son of the Blessed?

  670. And Jesus said,

  671. I am.

  672. You will see the Son of Man

  673. seated at the right hand of power

  674. and coming with clouds of heaven.

  675. And then it goes on to say this,

  676. the high priest tore his garments

  677. and said,

  678. What further witness do we need?

  679. You have heard this blasphemy.

  680. What is your decision?

  681. And they all condemned him

  682. as deserving death.

  683. The high priest tore his own garments.

  684. What was forbidden by the law

  685. in the Old Testament,

  686. he did.

  687. And people are saying

  688. this was how it was being seen

  689. as the old system was gone

  690. and the new was coming.

  691. Here is the Lamb of God

  692. fulfilled in Jesus Christ,

  693. the one who came

  694. to take away the sin of the world

  695. so that no longer

  696. was the system going to be

  697. the high priest himself going in,

  698. but Jesus as high priest.

  699. Once and for all sacrificed.

  700. So that now we have access to God

  701. through our Lord

  702. who is Jesus Christ.

  703. He is Lord.

  704. And you see it too

  705. in the reaction of the people

  706. in verse 15.

  707. We have no king

  708. but Caesar, they said.

  709. But what were they saying

  710. before that?

  711. Crucify him.

  712. Crucify him.

  713. Away with him.

  714. All these different responses.

  715. Pilate,

  716. Herod,

  717. the soldiers,

  718. the people,

  719. the crowds,

  720. they're all significant

  721. because they're all

  722. making the point

  723. who is Lord

  724. and what is

  725. your verdict

  726. of Christ.

  727. Will you avoid him

  728. or trying to push him away?

  729. Will you mock him?

  730. Will you shout his condemnation?

  731. Or will you instead

  732. take hold of him

  733. as the one who is

  734. the Lamb of God

  735. who came

  736. to take away

  737. the sin

  738. of the world?

  739. We are shown

  740. the Lamb

  741. who was Lord.

  742. But is he Lord

  743. for you?

  744. But before you answer that,

  745. there's one other thing

  746. we want to consider here.

  747. And that is to see

  748. what Jesus did

  749. for his people.

  750. And there we see

  751. the Lamb

  752. who was led

  753. away.

  754. As we see it

  755. in Isaiah 53

    Isaiah 53:7

  756. verse 7,

  757. he was led

  758. like a lamb

  759. to the slaughter.

  760. We see it also

  761. here

  762. in verse 16

  763. and 17

  764. of John 19.

  765. So he delivered him

  766. over to them

  767. to be crucified.

  768. So they took Jesus

  769. and he went out

  770. bearing his own cross

  771. to the place

  772. called

  773. the place

  774. of the skull

  775. which is in Aramaic,

  776. which in Aramaic

  777. is called

  778. Golgotha.

  779. He was led.

  780. The Lamb

  781. was led

  782. away.

  783. But all the time

  784. the people

  785. are leading him.

  786. Or so it seems.

  787. They were leading him

  788. to Pilate,

  789. to the high priest,

  790. to Herod

  791. and eventually

  792. leading him out

  793. to be crucified.

  794. And it would seem

  795. they get

  796. what they want.

  797. The Lamb

  798. of God

  799. was punished.

  800. punished.

  801. But when you look

  802. at where he was

  803. being led to,

  804. as he was led

  805. away

  806. bearing his own

  807. cross

  808. to the place

  809. called the skull

  810. to Golgotha

  811. to Calvary

  812. as it's known,

  813. we see he was

  814. being led

  815. away

  816. to fulfill

  817. scripture.

  818. The scripture

  819. that we have

  820. in Isaiah 53

    Isaiah 53:7

  821. verse 7,

  822. the Lamb

  823. was led

  824. to the slaughter.

  825. He was wounded

  826. for our transgressions,

  827. it says in verse 5

  828. of Isaiah 53.

  829. He was bruised

  830. for our iniquities.

  831. The chastisement

  832. of our peace

  833. was upon him

  834. and by his stripes

  835. we are healed.

  836. He was led

  837. out to suffer

  838. in our place.

  839. He was led

  840. out,

  841. condemned,

  842. a sinner.

  843. but his sacrifice

  844. was for us.

  845. It is through him

  846. we can say

  847. in my place

  848. condemned

  849. he stood.

  850. He didn't open

  851. his mouth,

  852. he was led

  853. to the cross.

  854. Because of the sin

  855. in your heart

  856. and mine,

  857. he was led

  858. like a lamb

  859. to the slaughter.

  860. Because we all

  861. like sheep

  862. have gone astray,

  863. we have turned

  864. each to our

  865. own way.

  866. The cost

  867. of our sin

  868. was this lamb

  869. being led away

  870. to die

  871. on the cross.

  872. And it is the cross

  873. that we are

  874. to look to today.

  875. It is the cross

  876. that we see

  877. before us

  878. when we think

  879. of the blood

  880. and the body

  881. that was shed

  882. and broken

  883. for his people.

  884. There is a story

  885. told of

  886. a long time

  887. ago in London

  888. when London

  889. wasn't as

  890. enormous

  891. as it is

  892. today.

  893. And the heart

  894. of London,

  895. the centre

  896. of London

  897. from which

  898. all other points

  899. took its distance

  900. was Charing Cross.

  901. And the place

  902. was often

  903. just referred to

  904. as the cross.

  905. People knew it

  906. in that way.

  907. There was one day

  908. when a policeman

  909. was out on duty

  910. and he came

  911. across a little

  912. boy who was

  913. distressed.

  914. He was lost.

  915. He was weeping.

  916. And the policeman

  917. was trying to ask him

  918. where are you from?

  919. Where do you live?

  920. And the wee boy

  921. just couldn't

  922. explain to him

  923. where his house

  924. was.

  925. And this was going

  926. on for a little while.

  927. Policeman just trying

  928. to get this information

  929. out of the boy.

  930. Can you just tell me

  931. something?

  932. Can you tell me

  933. something about

  934. where you live?

  935. And eventually

  936. the little boy

  937. said,

  938. well if you take

  939. me to the cross

  940. I can find

  941. my way from there.

  942. Because he knew

  943. Charing Cross.

  944. He knew that point

  945. and from there

  946. he knew where to go.

  947. But the illustration

  948. is there for us

  949. as well.

  950. When we are lost

  951. we are struggling

  952. to find our way

  953. to know

  954. what direction

  955. to go in.

  956. Where can we go?

  957. Well

  958. we pray

  959. take us

  960. to the cross.

  961. Take us

  962. to the cross

  963. because there

  964. we see

  965. all that's been

  966. done for us.

  967. And from there

  968. we can find

  969. our way

  970. because there

  971. we see

  972. our Lord

  973. the Lamb of God

  974. who came

  975. to take away

  976. the sin

  977. of the world.

  978. And from there

  979. we can follow him

  980. and walk

  981. with him

  982. knowing that

  983. he is the way

  984. the truth

  985. and the life.

  986. Knowing that

  987. in him

  988. we have a

  989. saviour

  990. who is faithful

  991. to us.

  992. And he has

  993. shown it

  994. in his love

  995. for us

  996. in giving

  997. his life.

  998. Today we come

  999. to the cross

  1000. in remembrance

  1001. of the Lamb

  1002. who was punished.

  1003. To remember

  1004. what Christ

  1005. has done

  1006. for us.

  1007. And when you

  1008. see that

  1009. when you

  1010. behold

  1011. the Lamb

  1012. of God

  1013. who takes

  1014. away

  1015. the sin

  1016. of the world

  1017. what is

  1018. your verdict

  1019. on Christ

  1020. then?

  1021. When you

  1022. see what

  1023. he has done

  1024. the price

  1025. that he

  1026. paid

  1027. in giving

  1028. his life

  1029. as a ransom

  1030. for many

  1031. what is

  1032. your verdict?

  1033. Do you

  1034. ignore him?

  1035. Do you

  1036. mock him?

  1037. Do you

  1038. cry out

  1039. crucify him

  1040. crucify him?

  1041. Or do you

  1042. say as

  1043. John the

  1044. Baptist

  1045. behold

  1046. the Lamb

  1047. of God

  1048. who takes

  1049. away the

  1050. sin

  1051. of the

  1052. world?

  1053. As we

  1054. come to

  1055. the Lord's

  1056. table

  1057. today

  1058. may we

  1059. behold

  1060. the Lamb

  1061. the Lamb

  1062. who was

  1063. led away

  1064. the Lamb

  1065. who died

  1066. for your

  1067. sin

  1068. and mine.

  1069. Quoted

  1070. from

  1071. the hymn

  1072. How Deep

  1073. the Father's

  1074. Love

  1075. Last Night

  1076. I'll quote

  1077. the last

  1078. verse of it

  1079. just now

  1080. where it

  1081. says

  1082. I will

  1083. not boast

  1084. in anything

  1085. no gifts

  1086. no power

  1087. no wisdom

  1088. but I

  1089. will boast

  1090. in Jesus

  1091. Christ

  1092. his death

  1093. and resurrection

  1094. why should I

  1095. gain from

  1096. his reward

  1097. I cannot

  1098. give an

  1099. answer

  1100. but this

  1101. I know

  1102. with all

  1103. my heart

  1104. his wounds

  1105. have paid

  1106. my ransom

  1107. by his

  1108. stripes

  1109. we are

  1110. healed

  1111. why

  1112. because the

  1113. Lamb

  1114. was

  1115. punished

  1116. the Lamb

  1117. was led

  1118. away to

  1119. die

  1120. for the

  1121. sins

  1122. of this

  1123. world

  1124. so today

  1125. may we

  1126. behold

  1127. the Lamb

  1128. of God

  1129. who takes

  1130. away

  1131. the sin

  1132. of the

  1133. world

  1134. let us

  1135. pray

  1136. our

  1137. Father

  1138. in heaven

  1139. we come

  1140. before you

  1141. just as

  1142. we are

  1143. with nothing

  1144. in our

  1145. hands to

  1146. bring to

  1147. you

  1148. but simply

  1149. to your

  1150. cross to

  1151. cling

  1152. and we

  1153. pray

  1154. today

  1155. Lord

  1156. that as

  1157. we come

  1158. to behold

  1159. the Lamb

  1160. of God

  1161. to remember

  1162. all that

  1163. he has

  1164. done

  1165. for us

  1166. to see

  1167. even the

  1168. elements

  1169. before us

  1170. the Lamb

  1171. that was

  1172. slain

  1173. to remember

  1174. what they

  1175. represent

  1176. the blood

  1177. represented

  1178. by the

  1179. wine

  1180. and the

  1181. bread

  1182. representing

  1183. the body

  1184. may you

  1185. enable us

  1186. to look

  1187. and to

  1188. see

  1189. and to

  1190. rejoice

  1191. in the

  1192. Saviour

  1193. of the

  1194. world

  1195. Jesus

  1196. Christ

  1197. our

  1198. Lord

  1199. our

  1200. King

  1201. may you

  1202. continue

  1203. with us

  1204. Lord

  1205. may you

  1206. hear our

  1207. prayers

  1208. may you

  1209. guide us

  1210. in all

  1211. that we

  1212. do

  1213. and all

  1214. that we

  1215. see

  1216. as we

  1217. ask all

  1218. with the

  1219. forgiveness

  1220. of our

  1221. sin

  1222. in Jesus

  1223. name

  1224. Amen

  1225. well before

  1226. we come

  1227. to the

  1228. Lord's

  1229. table

  1230. it's

  1231. customary

  1232. that we

  1233. would

  1234. just make

  1235. clear

  1236. who the

  1237. Lord's

  1238. table

  1239. is for

  1240. and it's

  1241. what's

  1242. often called

  1243. the fencing

  1244. of the

  1245. table

  1246. and maybe

  1247. seems a

  1248. little bit

  1249. of a

  1250. strange

  1251. thing

  1252. to call

  1253. it

  1254. fencing

  1255. what does

  1256. that

  1257. actually

  1258. mean

  1259. it's not

  1260. that we're

  1261. putting up

  1262. a great

  1263. barrier

  1264. to those

  1265. who should

  1266. and shouldn't

  1267. come

  1268. it's not

  1269. about putting

  1270. up a wall

  1271. in that sense

  1272. of you

  1273. can't come

  1274. past

  1275. but it's

  1276. just to

  1277. make it

  1278. clear

  1279. for whom

  1280. the

  1281. Lord's

  1282. table

  1283. is

  1284. it is

  1285. for those

  1286. who have

  1287. come

  1288. to

  1289. trust

  1290. in the

  1291. Lamb of

  1292. God

  1293. Jesus

  1294. Christ

  1295. I want

  1296. to highlight

  1297. just three

  1298. things

  1299. from the

  1300. word

  1301. fence

  1302. when we

  1303. think of

  1304. fence

  1305. we maybe

  1306. just think

  1307. of

  1308. of

  1309. crofts

  1310. and we

  1311. think of

  1312. the fences

  1313. we see

  1314. all around

  1315. our

  1316. islands

  1317. and what

  1318. are they

  1319. used

  1320. for

  1321. well they're

  1322. used

  1323. to either

  1324. keep

  1325. people

  1326. or animals

  1327. out

  1328. or in

  1329. and that's

  1330. certainly

  1331. one element

  1332. of fence

  1333. and there's

  1334. three I want

  1335. to highlight

  1336. as we come

  1337. to the

  1338. Lord's

  1339. table

  1340. from the

  1341. word

  1342. fence

  1343. the first

  1344. it means

  1345. to shield

  1346. or protect

  1347. so there is

  1348. a sense

  1349. when we come

  1350. to the

  1351. Lord's

  1352. table

  1353. it is

  1354. for a

  1355. particular

  1356. people

  1357. that is

  1358. why there

  1359. are white

  1360. tablecloths

  1361. on some

  1362. of the

  1363. pews

  1364. there is

  1365. an indication

  1366. of a

  1367. separation

  1368. there's a

  1369. divide

  1370. but it's

  1371. not in the

  1372. sense of

  1373. being

  1374. exclusive

  1375. in that

  1376. sense

  1377. but it's

  1378. just marking

  1379. the difference

  1380. there are

  1381. those who

  1382. sit on

  1383. one side

  1384. of the

  1385. fence

  1386. those who

  1387. have

  1388. professed

  1389. the

  1390. Lord

  1391. those who

  1392. have said

  1393. the Lord

  1394. is my

  1395. shepherd

  1396. but as

  1397. we see

  1398. there are

  1399. others

  1400. on the

  1401. other

  1402. side

  1403. of the

  1404. fence

  1405. where you

  1406. have not

  1407. come

  1408. to confess

  1409. the Lord

  1410. as your

  1411. shepherd

  1412. and it's

  1413. not there

  1414. to keep

  1415. you out

  1416. don't see

  1417. it like

  1418. that

  1419. it's not

  1420. the sense

  1421. of stay

  1422. away

  1423. for good

  1424. but it's

  1425. to show

  1426. that there

  1427. is another

  1428. place that

  1429. you can

  1430. come to

  1431. to come

  1432. and find

  1433. yourself

  1434. on the

  1435. right side

  1436. of the

  1437. fence

  1438. not halting

  1439. between

  1440. different

  1441. opinions

  1442. what side

  1443. of the

  1444. fence

  1445. are you

  1446. on

  1447. but to

  1448. come

  1449. to this

  1450. side

  1451. the side

  1452. where we

  1453. find

  1454. the protection

  1455. of the

  1456. Lord

  1457. because

  1458. coming to

  1459. take the

  1460. Lord's

  1461. supper

  1462. by faith

  1463. if you

  1464. believe

  1465. it will

  1466. do you

  1467. good

  1468. the second

  1469. thing we

  1470. see about

  1471. a fence

  1472. is

  1473. it

  1474. encloses

  1475. for those

  1476. who come

  1477. confessing

  1478. and professing

  1479. Jesus Christ

  1480. as Lord

  1481. there is a

  1482. sense of

  1483. being

  1484. enclosed

  1485. together

  1486. strengthened

  1487. together

  1488. we are

  1489. no longer

  1490. the sheep

  1491. who have

  1492. gone astray

  1493. we are not

  1494. out

  1495. wandering

  1496. away

  1497. by

  1498. ourselves

  1499. away

  1500. from

  1501. God

  1502. we are

  1503. gathered

  1504. together

  1505. as one

  1506. body

  1507. in

  1508. Christ

  1509. and we

  1510. are

  1511. seeking

  1512. to be

  1513. strengthened

  1514. together

  1515. to be

  1516. nourished

  1517. together

  1518. by the

  1519. shepherd

  1520. of the

  1521. sheep

  1522. so we

  1523. are

  1524. enclosed

  1525. together

  1526. we are

  1527. given

  1528. strength

  1529. and

  1530. encouragement

  1531. and we

  1532. rejoice

  1533. when the

  1534. number of

  1535. the flock

  1536. is added

  1537. to

  1538. when there

  1539. are those

  1540. who come

  1541. to profess

  1542. Christ

  1543. as Lord

  1544. and come

  1545. into

  1546. membership

  1547. with

  1548. ourselves

  1549. we are

  1550. encouraged

  1551. we are

  1552. blessed

  1553. as we

  1554. are enclosed

  1555. together

  1556. one

  1557. in

  1558. Christ

  1559. but the

  1560. word

  1561. fence

  1562. has another

  1563. quite

  1564. different

  1565. meaning

  1566. and it

  1567. means

  1568. fencing

  1569. or to

  1570. fence

  1571. to fight

  1572. with a

  1573. sword

  1574. I don't

  1575. know if

  1576. anybody

  1577. has ever

  1578. tried

  1579. it

  1580. you see

  1581. it

  1582. I think

  1583. it's

  1584. part of

  1585. the

  1586. Olympic

  1587. Games

  1588. they have

  1589. these

  1590. fencing

  1591. competitions

  1592. and they're

  1593. fighting each

  1594. other with a

  1595. sword

  1596. and in

  1597. some ways

  1598. that reminds

  1599. us what

  1600. the Lord's

  1601. table

  1602. is like

  1603. as well

  1604. because

  1605. there's often

  1606. a fight

  1607. going on

  1608. a fight

  1609. going on

  1610. of the

  1611. battle

  1612. of coming

  1613. to acknowledge

  1614. the Lord

  1615. and who

  1616. is

  1617. Lord

  1618. but as

  1619. we look

  1620. to the

  1621. Lord

  1622. Jesus

  1623. Christ

  1624. and trust

  1625. in him

  1626. we are

  1627. reminded

  1628. that he

  1629. has won

  1630. the victory

  1631. when you

  1632. go back

  1633. to the

  1634. book of

  1635. Genesis

  1636. when the

  1637. man and

  1638. the woman

  1639. were cast

  1640. out of

  1641. the garden

  1642. of Eden

  1643. there was

  1644. a flaming

  1645. sword

  1646. that was

  1647. to protect

  1648. them from

  1649. getting back

  1650. in

  1651. the axis

  1652. was denied

  1653. but when

  1654. we look

  1655. to Jesus

  1656. Christ

  1657. we find

  1658. in him

  1659. the victory

  1660. that he

  1661. has broken

  1662. down

  1663. that barrier

  1664. that he

  1665. has fought

  1666. that fight

  1667. for us

  1668. and that we

  1669. have access

  1670. once more

  1671. to God

  1672. we are to

  1673. come

  1674. victorious

  1675. in him

  1676. he has

  1677. opened

  1678. up

  1679. the way

  1680. so the

  1681. fencing

  1682. is important

  1683. it does

  1684. show that

  1685. there is

  1686. a division

  1687. but it's

  1688. not a divide

  1689. that we

  1690. want always

  1691. there

  1692. we want

  1693. others

  1694. to come

  1695. because it

  1696. means

  1697. enclosing

  1698. together

  1699. coming near

  1700. to God

  1701. together

  1702. as one

  1703. and remembering

  1704. the victory

  1705. of Christ

  1706. well as

  1707. we prepare

  1708. to come

  1709. to the

  1710. Lord's

  1711. table

  1712. we're going

  1713. to sing

  1714. to God's

  1715. praise

  1716. in Psalm

  1717. 118

  1718. the Scottish

  1719. Psalter

  1720. version of

  1721. the Psalm

  1722. Psalm 118

  1723. we're going

  1724. to sing

  1725. from verse

  1726. 15

  1727. to verse

  1728. 23

  1729. page 398

  1730. of the

  1731. psalm books

  1732. Psalm 118

  1733. at verse

  1734. 15

  1735. we'll sing

  1736. from verse

  1737. 15

  1738. to verse

  1739. 23

  1740. to God's

  1741. praise

  1742. B

1743. The bright hand of the mighty Lord, exalted is all night.

1744. The bright hand of the mighty Lord, the faithful, valiantly.

1745. I shall not die, but live and shall the works of God discover.

1746. The Lord not be just eyes and sore, but not to death in over.

1747. O set ye open unto me, the gates of righteousness.

1748. Then will I enter into them, and I the Lord will bless.

1749. This is the gate of God, I am, that I shall enter in.

1750. The gate of God, I am, that I shall not be.

1751. And so this make a cornerstone, which builders did despise.

1752. This is the doing of the Lord, and wondrous in our eyes.
