  1. Well, good evening and welcome to our service. Once again, it's good to be with you. I'm glad to see you all here in good time after I try to persuade you this morning at the close of the service to be here for 6pm.

  2. But I'd forgotten that you were half past 6. At least it wasn't 7pm, which was, of course, the appointed time for the evening service, I believe, in decades past.

  3. So, we are here to worship God and before we sing to the praise of God, let's read from Ephesians chapter 3 as our call to worship the Lord.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  4. Ephesians 3 verse 20, the Apostle Paul writes,

    Ephesians 3:20

  5. Amen.

  6. Well, let's sing to the glory of God.

  7. Let's raise our voices as we sing Psalm 47.

  8. The Sing Psalms rendering of Psalm 47 on page 62.

  9. The tune is Walton.

  10. All nations, clap your hands and shout.

  11. Let joyful cries to God ring out.

  12. How awesome is the Lord most high, great King who rules the earth throughout.

  13. Let's stand and sing to the praise of God.

  14. All nations, clap your hands and shout.

  15. All nations, clap your hands and shout.

  16. Let joyful cries to God ring out.

  17. How awesome is the Lord most high, great King who rules the earth throughout.

  18. He has such good beneath our feet.

  19. The nations who are freeing our cause.

When blessings, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who are freeing our efforts, who

  29. To them alone

  30. For whose the nations

  31. Come on high

  32. He sits upon this holy throne

  33. The leaders of the nations

  35. To the heavens God

  36. To him belong

  37. The shields of earth

  39. Let's draw near to God

  40. Let's unite our hearts

  41. In prayer

  42. Our heavenly Father

  43. Our great God and King

  44. We praise you for your faithfulness

  45. For your goodness and grace

  46. We give thanks that you have

  47. Brought us together

  48. Together

  49. Again

  50. Under your word

  51. And as we

  52. Recognize its supreme authority

  53. So we pray that we

  54. Would live by it

  55. Grant us to immerse ourselves

  56. In it

  57. And to see our need

  58. Of turning the pages

  59. Of scripture day by day

  60. Being led

  61. By the inspired word of God

  62. In every aspect of our lives

  63. We praise you for the blessings

  64. Of the Lord's day

  65. We thank you for this

  66. The first day of the week

  67. The Christian Sabbath

  68. We praise you for the empty tomb

  69. We give thanks for how the words

  70. Of the Lord Jesus

  71. Resonate with us

  72. I am the resurrection

  73. And the life

  74. And so we gather in the name of

  75. Our living exalted savior

  76. The one who lives

  77. And whoever lives

  78. We praise you that he

  79. He abolished death

  80. And brought life

  81. And immortality to light

  82. Through the gospel

  83. We thank you this evening

  84. That in Jesus Christ

  85. We have a great high priest

  86. Like no other

  87. We thank you that we have

  88. In Jesus Christ

  89. An advocate with the Father

  90. A mediator

  91. We have a glorious redeemer

  92. And we praise you

  93. Our Father in heaven

  94. That we can draw near to you

  95. Through the son of your love

  96. Even in this moment

  97. So anew we pray

  98. That you would still our hearts

  99. Take from us any distracting thoughts

  100. So that nothing will hinder us

  101. From worshipping you

  102. The only living and true God

  103. We pray that you would take from us

  104. Any anxious thoughts

  105. We might have

  106. For your word exhorts us

  107. To be anxious over nothing

  108. But in everything by prayer

  109. And supplication

  110. With thanksgiving

  111. To bring our requests

  112. Before your throne of grace

  113. And how we praise you

  114. For the peace of God

  115. Of which we read of

  116. On the pages of Scripture

  117. As it transcends all understanding

  118. Safeguarding

  119. Protecting

  120. The fragility of our hearts and minds

  121. Through Christ Jesus

  122. Our Lord

  123. Take from us anything

  124. That might come between us and you

  125. For we confess our sins

  126. And we pray that you would forgive us

  127. For our many wrongdoings

  128. Even in this very moment

  129. Our thoughts can wander

  130. We drift

  131. Keep us

  132. We pray

  133. Anchored now

  134. To your word

  135. And as we sing your praises

  136. Enable us to

  137. Fully engage

  138. In this act

  139. Of worship

  140. May your spirit

  141. Lead us

  142. As we

  143. Read your word

  144. And engage with it

  145. Anew this evening

  146. Grant your blessing

  147. On the ministry of the gospel

  148. Here

  149. Within

  150. This congregation

  151. We pray that

  152. Your blessing

  153. Would be

  154. Upon

  155. All that is

  156. Undertaken

  157. Said and done

  158. In your name

  159. From week to week

  160. We pray for the

  161. Encouragement

  162. Of

  163. Calamurdo Smith

  164. And for

  165. The congregation's

  166. Interim moderator

  167. Colin McLeod

  168. May you bless

  169. Pastors

  170. And people

  171. Alike

  172. And may there be

  173. A felt

  174. Sense of

  175. Oneness

  176. And togetherness

  177. During these

  178. Days of

  179. Vacancy

  180. May you

  181. Draw near

  182. And may you

  183. Grant

  184. Much

  185. By way

  186. Of encouragement

  187. To all

  188. Who long

  189. To reach out

  190. With the good news

  191. Of the gospel

  192. Bless

  193. Every

  194. Endeavor

  195. We praise you

  196. For

  197. The

  198. Children

  199. Present

  200. This morning

  201. And for those

  202. Who are present

  203. This evening

  204. And for every

  205. Provision

  206. For

  207. Them

  208. For every

  209. Means

  210. Through which

  211. They have

  212. And are given

  213. An exposure

  214. To the good news

  215. Of the gospel

  216. All of which

  217. Revolves around

  218. Jesus Christ

  219. And him

  220. Crucified

  221. And so now

  222. We pray your

  223. Blessing on every

  224. Home and family

  225. Belonging to

  226. And associated

  227. With the

  228. Congregation

  229. We pray

  230. That you

  231. Would remember

  232. This town

  233. And the

  234. Island

  235. And grant

  236. That as

  237. In times

  238. Past

  239. You would

  240. Come

  241. With

  242. Power

  243. From

  244. The very

  245. Throne room

  246. Of heaven

  247. Itself

  248. As

  249. In decades

  250. Past

  251. As in

  252. Ages

  253. Past

  254. When there

  255. Were

  256. Eras

  257. Of

  258. Spiritual

  259. Awakening

  260. Come

  261. We pray

  262. With

  263. Reviving

  264. Power

  265. Across

  266. Our

  267. Highlands

  268. And

  269. Islands

  270. And so

  271. Now

  272. We look

  273. To you

  274. Our

  275. Great

  276. God

  277. And

  278. Father

  279. You

  280. Are

  281. Infinite

  282. Eternal

  283. You

  284. Are

  285. Unchangeable

  286. In

  287. You

  288. We

  289. Live

  290. We

  291. Move

  292. And

  293. We

  294. Have

  295. Our

  296. Very

  297. Existence

  298. And

  299. It

  300. Is

  301. Your

  302. Presence

  303. We

  304. Crave

  305. And

  306. Long

  307. For

  308. Now

  309. Watch

  310. Over

  311. Us

  312. Forgive

  313. Us

  314. And

  315. You

  316. For

  317. All

  318. Of

  319. Our

  320. Sins

  321. For

  322. All

  323. We

  324. Ask

  325. Is

  326. In

  327. Christ's

  328. Name

  329. And

  330. For

  331. His

  332. Sake

  334. Now

  586. Our next scripture reading.

  587. takes us to the very passage we read this morning, Numbers chapter 10.

    Numbers 10 chapter mention

  588. Now we're going to read from verse 29 to 36, but just by way of context for the benefit of those

  589. of you who were not present this morning, let me just read from verse 11. In the second year,

  590. in the second month, on the 20th day of the month, the cloud lifted from over the tabernacle of the

  591. testimony, and the people of Israel set out by stages from the wilderness of Sinai.

  592. And at verse 29, and Moses said to Hobab, the son of Reuel, the Midianite, Moses's father-in-law,

  593. what we are setting out for the place of which the Lord said, I will give it to you. Come with us,

  594. and we will do good to you. For the Lord has promised good to Israel, but he said to him,

  595. I will not go. I will depart to my own land and to my kindred. And he said,

  596. please do not leave us, for you know where we should camp in the wilderness,

  597. and you will serve as eyes for us. And if you do go with us, whatever good the Lord will do to us,

  598. the same will we do to you. So they set out from the mount of the Lord for three days' journey,

  599. and the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them for three days' journey

  600. to seek out a resting place for them. And the cloud of the Lord was over them by day,

  601. whenever they set out from the camp. And whenever the ark set out, Moses said, Arise, O Lord,

  602. and let your enemies be scattered, and let those who hate you flee before you. And when it rested,

  603. he said, Return, O Lord, to the ten thousand thousands of Israel. Amen.

  604. And we know God will add his blessing to the reading of his own holy word.

  605. We'll now sing to the praise of God the words of Psalm 51 from St. Sam's verses 1 to 12.

  606. This great psalm of confession.

  607. Oh, my God, have mercy on me. In your steadfast love, I pray. In your infinite compassion,

  608. my transgressions wipe away. Cleanse me from iniquity. Wash my sin away from me.

  609. Let's sing these words prayerfully to God's praise.

  610. Amen.

  611. Amen.

  612. Amen.

  613. Oh, my God, have mercy on me. In your steadfast love, I pray.

  614. For you, my God, have mercy on you. In your infinite compassion, my transgressions wipe away.

  615. Cleanse me from iniquity. Wash my sin away from me.

  616. For I know my own transgressions, I can see my sinful life.

  617. You, you, only I've all been lived, and an evil in your sight.

  618. So your words are verified, and your word is justified.

  619. From my birth I have been sinful, such an angel I receive.

  620. Sinful from my first beginning, in my mother's womb conceived.

  621. Truth, dear, and fall in my heart, wisdom to me you impart.

  622. Men's witness of purifying me, I'll be whiter than the snow.

  623. Let the bones you crush be joyful, may I joy and gladness know.

  624. From my failure I endure face, out of my wickedness.

  625. Lord, create a pure heart in me, and a steadfast mind for you.

  626. Do not take your spirit from me, cast me not away from you.

  627. Carry back the joy I have, keep my willing spirit glad.

  628. And the melody there, incidentally, was Ottawa, which I omitted to mention.

  629. Well, turn with me, if you will, for a short time this evening to the passage we read together from the book of Numbers, chapter 10.

    Numbers 10 chapter mention

  630. Numbers 10, the words of Moses to Hobab in verse 29,

  631. Come with us, and we will do good to you.

  632. For the Lord has promised good to Israel.

  633. But he said to him, I will not go.

  634. I will depart to my own land and to my kindred, and so on.

  635. A man named Hobab.

  636. Now, this morning we considered verse 29 under two headings.

  637. Hobab asked, Hobab assured.

  638. So just to recap, the Israelites, in verse 12 of this chapter, they set out in order to begin the conquest of Canaan.

  639. We see them here, assembled, mobilized into orderly ranks with standards and banners lifted up.

  640. It is destination Canaan.

  641. They are good to go, and they are now looking forward to the first leg of their journey towards the promised land.

  642. But our interest, as we highlighted this morning, is in the very personal element to this narrative.

  643. It revolves around Hobab, Moses' Midianite brother-in-law.

  644. He is asked here to join the people of Israel, to enroll, to sign up, to subscribe, to accompany them through the wilderness,

  645. and play a crucial part, a meaningful part, in assisting Israel in navigating their way to Canaan.

  646. But as we noted this morning, Hobab is not merely being called upon as a navigator, as a route finder, as a tracker.

  647. There is so much more to this.

  648. Moses' invitation goes much deeper.

  649. This is a personal invitation with a powerful gospel dynamic to it.

  650. Walk with us, Moses says.

  651. Journey with us.

  652. We will treat you well, should you do so.

  653. In fact, you will share in our inheritance, in the inheritance of God's goodness.

  654. And this is his assurance, should he come along.

  655. It's compelling.

  656. Multiple blessings await Hobab, a promised land flowing with milk and honey, a better country, better by far.

  657. So the question we're going to address tonight is, how will Hobab respond?

  658. Similar to this morning, two headings, we're going to look at Hobab's answer, and we conclude by looking at Moses' appeal.

  659. So what are we to make of Hobab's answer to the invitation of Moses?

  660. When I ministered in Barvis, I would sometimes watch very experienced surfers surf very large Atlantic waves just beyond the Barvis Macher.

  661. It was not for the faint-hearted.

  662. I was once invited by a local surfer to give it a go.

  663. Come with us, he said.

  664. I can't recall if he said, we will do you good.

  665. But my response was, no.

  666. I'm not doing it.

  667. Go on, he said.

  668. And I simply borrowed Hobab's reply to Moses, and I said firmly, no.

  669. I will not go.

  670. You see, Hobab declines Moses' invitation to associate himself with Israel here.

  671. And it's a firm no.

  672. In no uncertain terms, he makes it very clear to Moses that he is not prepared to sever his personal tie

  673. with his own property and his own indigenous people.

  674. He kind of digs his heels in, doesn't he?

  675. When he says no, you get the impression that he means no.

  676. As if to say, with all due respect, Moses, I'm not going.

  677. No ambiguity.

  678. No hesitation.

  679. This appears to be a resolute no.

  680. I will not go.

  681. Now, three things hinder Hobab.

  682. Note here, when he says, I will now depart to my own land and kindred,

  683. it's clear that, yes, three things hinder him.

  684. He's preoccupied with land, livestock, the two overlap, and loved ones.

  685. Land, livestock, and loved ones.

  686. That resonates with us, doesn't it?

  687. We are a crofting community, essentially.

  688. The land, livestock, and loved ones, all three, go deep.

  689. You see, there is much to sacrifice here for Hobab.

  690. And he's just not prepared to let go.

  691. Because to follow, he must forsake.

  692. So he resolves not to go.

  693. He may be apprehensive, afraid about letting go,

  694. because his attachment to the land is strong.

  695. But Moses is saying,

  696. there's a better land.

  697. There's a better country.

  698. Come with us.

  699. But Hobab has duties.

  700. He has responsibilities.

  701. He has personal family ties.

  702. He can't just walk away and leave everything behind.

  703. He may also be concerned about his personal and professional reputation.

  704. What will his Midianite family and community think of him?

  705. Should he now associate himself with the people of Israel?

  706. What will people say?

  707. What will people think of me?

  708. After all, the Midianites and the Israelites

  709. had a frosty relationship.

  710. It wasn't without friction.

  711. So at best, they coexist at this time.

  712. So it seems that the cost implications are just too great for Hobab here.

  713. So I want to ask at this point,

  714. if perhaps some of us here tonight

  715. feel a measure of sympathy for Hobab.

  716. Do you feel his pain?

  717. Do his personal circumstances here reflect your own?

  718. Perhaps for those of us who are Christians here tonight,

  719. we can reflect on a time

  720. when perhaps we were first challenged

  721. with the invitation of the gospel.

  722. That moment when we perhaps heard the words of Numbers 10 29.

  723. And you too initially responded with a firm,

  724. I will not go.

  725. It's not happening.

  726. You heard the gospel anthem of the church,

  727. come with us.

  728. We will do you good.

  729. And yet you responded by saying,

  730. no, I will not go.

  731. Why not?

  732. Well, perhaps if some of us are prepared to reflect,

  733. maybe it had a lot to do with our attachments and ties at that time.

  734. You see, there's much to walk away from

  735. when you become a follower of Jesus Christ.

  736. There's much to sever and to sacrifice.

  737. What will my family and friends say?

  738. You see, Numbers 10 reminds us of this great truth

  739. that we see across the landscape of the four gospels

  740. as Jesus calls his followers.

  741. To follow, one must forsake.

  742. And this is a recurring emphasis on the pages of the Bible.

  743. It's no different here.

  744. Hobab is being invited to walk by faith.

  745. What is faith in Jesus Christ?

  746. Look at that word and break it down into five elements.

  747. F-A-I-T-H.

  748. You've probably heard it before, but we'll say it again.

  749. Forsaking all.

  750. I trust him.

  751. This is what is being asked of Hobab.

  752. How will Hobab respond?

  753. When you're reading through Matthew's gospel,

  754. we read a little from Matthew's gospel tonight from chapter 16.

  755. We'll come back to a number of key reference points there in a moment.

  756. But if you begin in Matthew chapter 4,

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  757. as Jesus commences his ministry,

  758. he calls, in the first instance, Peter and Andrew,

  759. just as they're casting their nets on the Sea of Galilee.

  760. Come, follow me, Jesus says to them.

  761. To follow Jesus,

  762. they must forsake their ties to the Sea of Galilee.

  763. And that attachment is strong.

  764. They are fishermen.

  765. And they did.

  766. At once, Matthew tells us,

  767. indeed, with immediate effect,

  768. they left their nets and followed Jesus.

  769. But let's go from the positive to the negative.

  770. Because when we come to Matthew chapter 19,

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  771. we realize that this is not always the case.

  772. There's a Hobab in the mix.

  773. In the form of a self-righteous, rich, young ruler

  774. who struggles to forsake his ties to an affluent lifestyle

  775. in order to follow Jesus.

  776. Come, follow me,

  777. Jesus says to this rich young man.

  778. But Matthew tells us

  779. that he went away sad

  780. because he had great wealth.

  781. He does a Hobab.

  782. He says to Jesus,

  783. No,

  784. I will not go.

  785. You see,

  786. Christian discipleship is best summed up

  787. in the words of the Lord Jesus

  788. in the passage we read from Matthew chapter 16,

    Matthew 16:24

  789. verse 24.

  790. Whoever wants to be my disciple

  791. must deny themselves,

  792. take up the cross,

  793. and follow me.

  794. Now,

  795. it's fair to say,

  796. is it not,

  797. that Hobab

  798. seems to have an issue

  799. with self-denial.

  800. And it's something

  801. that you and I

  802. often struggle with

  803. if we're honest with ourselves.

  804. There was once

  805. a preacher,

  806. an author,

  807. his name was Henry Drummond,

  808. and he said this,

  809. The entrance fee

  810. into the kingdom of heaven

  811. is nothing,

  812. but the annual subscription

  813. is everything.

  814. And this is where we see Hobab.

  815. Moses is saying to him,

  816. Hobab,

  817. there is so much to gain.

  818. Hobab is saying to Moses,

  819. Ah,

  820. but there's everything to lose,

  821. is there not?

  822. This is Hobab's challenge,

  823. and perhaps it's yours tonight.

  824. So let's move on.

  825. Let's come to Moses' appeal.

  826. Because this really takes us

  827. to the nitty-gritty

  828. of what is unfolding.

  829. Credit to Moses

  830. in verse 31.

  831. You will notice that he is not one

  832. for taking no for an answer.

  833. What are we to make

  834. of his appeal

  835. in verse 31?

  836. What does he say to Hobab?

  837. Hobab,

  838. please do not leave us,

  839. for you know

  840. where we should camp

  841. in the wilderness,

  842. and you will serve

  843. as eyes for us.

  844. Please, Hobab,

  845. I beg you,

  846. don't abandon us

  847. at this critical juncture.

  848. He pleads with him

  849. not to walk away,

  850. not to depart,

  851. not to detach himself,

  852. not to go back.

  853. There's something

  854. distinctly missional

  855. about Moses

  856. in this instance,

  857. isn't there?

  858. You see,

  859. missional outreach

  860. is reaching out

  861. to someone

  862. with the gospel.

  863. It's as simple as that,

  864. and we see it here.

  865. Moses leads by example

  866. here in Numbers 10.31.

  867. Notice how he reaches out

  868. to Hobab,

  869. and his appeal,

  870. as we've just read,

  871. it's personal,

  872. but it's incredibly persuasive.

  873. Notice, too,

  874. that it's intentional,

  875. it's purposeful,

  876. and it is passionate.

  877. This is one-to-one evangelism

  878. at its very best,

  879. and no,

  880. we're not on the pages

  881. of the New Testament.

  882. This is Numbers chapter 10,

    Numbers 10 chapter mention

  883. and it's bulging

  884. with the gospel,

  885. isn't it?

  886. Notice, too,

  887. that Moses,

  888. here in verse 31,

  889. calls Hobab

  890. to serve.

  891. Now, this is crucial

  892. to our understanding

  893. of Christian discipleship

  894. throughout the Bible.

  895. The Lord Jesus himself

  896. sets the sacrificial bar

  897. of service.

  898. The Son of Man,

  899. he says,

  900. came not to be served,

  901. but to serve,

  902. and to give his life

  903. as a ransom for many.

  904. Now, when you think of Hobab,

  905. it's important for us

  906. to think of someone

  907. who is distinguished.

  908. He's a prominent figure

  909. in the Midianite community.

  910. He's a man of standing,

  911. and yet,

  912. his commission

  913. is to serve.

  914. Service,

  915. not status.

  916. No platform,

  917. no pedestal,

  918. no superiority,

  919. no standing,

  920. no pomp,

  921. no ceremony.

  922. Hobab's,

  923. Moses' appeal

  924. to Hobab

  925. is

  926. to serve.

  927. And that word

  928. in this verse

  929. really is important.

  930. You see,

  931. a servant,

  932. generally speaking

  933. throughout the Scriptures,

  934. is by definition

  935. devoted

  936. to another

  937. to the disregard

  938. of his own interests.

  939. It's the vocabulary

  940. of slavery.

  941. And who is the ultimate

  942. bond-servant

  943. in the narrative here?

  944. It is, of course,

  945. Moses,

  946. the servant

  947. of God himself.

  948. Moses is the one

  949. addressing Hobab

  950. to serve.

  951. Moses is indeed

  952. one who is owned

  953. and dedicated

  954. to serve

  955. his Lord

  956. and his Master,

  957. the Holy One

  958. of Israel.

  959. Now,

  960. it's important

  961. for us

  962. to recognize

  963. the importance

  964. of this little

  965. but significant

  966. word,

  967. serve.

  968. You will serve

  969. as eyes

  970. for us.

  971. Because,

  972. you see,

  973. this kind

  974. of vocabulary

  975. really goes

  976. against the grain

  977. of contemporary

  978. thinking these days,

  979. doesn't it?

  980. A self-orientated,

  981. self-focused,

  982. self-centered,

  983. self-elevating,

  984. 21st century

  985. take on life.

  986. Shameless,

  987. self-promotion

  988. dominates just about

  989. every social media

  990. platform these days.

  991. it's at the core

  992. of our individualistic

  993. culture where there's

  994. a constant striving

  995. for self-fulfillment.

  996. And yet,

  997. when you turn

  998. the pages of

  999. Matthew,

  1000. Mark,

  1001. Luke,

  1002. and John,

  1003. what is it

  1004. that strikes you

  1005. immediately?

  1006. Serving Jesus Christ

  1007. is central

  1008. to the gospel

  1009. narratives.

  1010. You see,

  1011. discipleship begins

  1012. as it does

  1013. in Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  1014. We referenced it earlier.

  1015. It begins with

  1016. follow me

  1017. and continues

  1018. with the same

  1019. discipleship

  1020. dynamic

  1021. throughout.

  1022. Follow me,

  1023. serve me,

  1024. live for me

  1025. from the beginning

  1026. of your Christian life

  1027. to the very end.

  1028. It struck me

  1029. recently

  1030. reading

  1031. Paul's letter

  1032. to Titus.

1033. Paul is an old man.

  1034. The sun

  1035. is setting

  1036. fast

  1037. over

  1038. his days.

  1039. It's now

  1040. 65 AD.

  1041. He writes

  1042. to Titus,

  1043. the great

  1044. apostle Paul.

  1045. And he begins

  1046. this letter,

  1047. yes,

  1048. in the evening

  1049. of his years.

  1050. Paul,

  1051. a servant

  1052. of God

  1053. and

  1054. an apostle

  1055. of Jesus Christ.

  1056. As we read

  1057. this narrative

  1058. tonight,

  1059. I want us

  1060. to ask ourselves

  1061. soul-searching

  1062. questions.

  1063. What,

  1064. who

  1065. are we

  1066. living for?

  1067. What is

  1068. your great

  1069. goal in life?

  1070. is it

  1071. self-gratification

  1072. or self-denial?

  1073. Is it

  1074. higher status

  1075. or higher

  1076. service?

  1077. Hobab,

  1078. Moses says,

  1079. you know

  1080. where we should

  1081. camp in the wilderness

  1082. and you can

  1083. serve

  1084. as our

  1085. eyes.

  1086. Notice

  1087. something else

  1088. that Moses

  1089. does.

  1090. focus on

  1091. and

  1092. he focuses

  1093. on Hobab's

  1094. knowledge

  1095. and awareness

  1096. and experience

  1097. all of which

  1098. makes him a

  1099. resourceful and

  1100. effective person

  1101. to have.

  1102. In other words,

  1103. his gifts

  1104. can be put

  1105. to good use

  1106. within the

  1107. fellowship

  1108. of Israel.

  1109. Service

  1110. and gifts

  1111. overlap

  1112. in the

  1113. Christian

  1114. life

  1115. and both

  1116. are to

  1117. be

  1118. not for

  1119. our

  1120. benefit

  1121. but for

  1122. the glory

  1123. of God.

  1124. You see,

  1125. Hobab can

  1126. input

  1127. and assist

  1128. as few

  1129. can.

  1130. That's the

  1131. point here.

  1132. He can

  1133. act as

  1134. the very

  1135. eyes of

  1136. Israel

  1137. and play

  1138. an active

  1139. part in

  1140. this journey.

  1141. So what is

  1142. Moses saying

  1143. to him?

  1144. Well,

  1145. again,

  1146. come,

  1147. not as a

  1148. passenger,

  1149. but come

  1150. as an

  1151. active

  1152. participant,

  1153. Hobab.

  1154. Again,

  1155. this is

  1156. vital

  1157. to our

  1158. understanding

  1159. of discipleship

  1160. as we

  1161. read this

  1162. narrative in

  1163. Numbers 10

  1164. in parallel

  1165. with the

  1166. Gospels of

  1167. Matthew,

  1168. Mark,

  1169. Luke,

  1170. and John.

  1171. You see,

  1172. the kingdom

  1173. always requires

  1174. of you and

  1175. I a

  1176. hands-on

  1177. approach.

  1178. Folded

  1179. hands are

  1180. of no

  1181. use in

  1182. the kingdom.

  1183. Proactive,

  1184. not inactive.

  1185. Doing,

  1186. not dithering.

  1187. Hands to

  1188. the plow,

  1189. no looking

  1190. back.

  1191. And so

  1192. Hobab is

  1193. given every

  1194. encouragement

  1195. by Moses

  1196. here to

  1197. enroll,

  1198. to sign

  1199. up,

  1200. and to

  1201. accompany

  1202. Moses and

  1203. the people

  1204. of Israel

  1205. through this

  1206. wilderness

  1207. journey ahead

  1208. and play

  1209. a strategic,

  1210. meaningful,

  1211. vital,

  1212. key part

  1213. in assisting

  1214. Moses and

  1215. the people

  1216. of Israel

  1217. and to

  1218. give of

  1219. his insight

  1220. and knowledge

  1221. and experience

  1222. to the

  1223. glory of

  1224. God.

  1225. God.

  1226. But let me

  1227. just say

  1228. what I

  1229. said this

  1230. morning

  1231. very briefly.

  1232. Moses'

  1233. appeal

  1234. goes

  1235. so much

  1236. deeper

  1237. than just

  1238. having

  1239. Hobab

  1240. on board

  1241. as someone

  1242. who would

  1243. be useful

  1244. to have.

  1245. As we

  1246. said,

  1247. this points

  1248. us firmly

  1249. to a

  1250. very powerful

  1251. moving

  1252. gospel

  1253. invitation.

  1254. You see,

  1255. Hobab is

  1256. personally

  1257. asked to

  1258. step

  1259. forward,

  1260. to come

  1261. forward,

  1262. and associate

  1263. himself now

  1264. with God's

  1265. people,

  1266. to follow

  1267. the ark

  1268. of the

  1269. covenant,

  1270. to follow

  1271. the pillar

  1272. of cloud,

  1273. to follow

  1274. not just

  1275. the people

  1276. of God

  1277. but the

  1278. Lord God

  1279. himself.

  1280. And he's

  1281. assured here

  1282. too that

  1283. God has

  1284. a purpose,

  1285. for him.

  1286. Listen to

  1287. what Moses

  1288. says in

  1289. verse 32,

  1290. Hobab,

  1291. should you

  1292. come,

  1293. and can

  1294. you hear

  1295. the decibels

  1296. rising in

  1297. Moses'

  1298. voice?

  1299. Hobab,

  1300. should you

  1301. come with

  1302. us,

  1303. then you

  1304. too will

  1305. be a

  1306. recipient

  1307. of blessing

  1308. as much

  1309. as every

  1310. other

  1311. Israelite

  1312. you see

  1313. around you

  1314. here.

  1315. You will

  1316. not be

  1317. excluded

  1318. should you

  1319. come

  1320. with us.

  1321. We will

  1322. treat you

  1323. well.

  1324. Indeed,

  1325. you will

  1326. be grafted

  1327. in,

  1328. you will

  1329. be adopted

  1330. into the

  1331. family of

  1332. God,

  1333. Hobab.

  1334. What's

  1335. ours will

  1336. be yours,

  1337. the same

  1338. inheritance,

  1339. no less.

  1340. That's what

  1341. Moses is

  1342. saying in

  1343. verse 32,

  1344. just as

  1345. that little

  1346. word serve

  1347. is so

  1348. significant

  1349. in verse

  1350. 31,

  1351. the word

  1352. same carries

  1353. tremendous

  1354. weight in

  1355. verse 32.

  1356. Now isn't

  1357. Moses a

  1358. great evangelist?

  1359. He's

  1360. persistent,

  1361. isn't he?

  1362. He reaches

  1363. out to

  1364. Hobab

  1365. once again,

  1366. and with

  1367. urgency he

  1368. makes his

  1369. appeal to

  1370. him to

  1371. commit once

  1372. and for

  1373. all.

  1374. You see,

  1375. the Israelites,

  1376. well,

  1377. they're good

  1378. to go.

  1379. They're

  1380. ready to

  1381. depart.

  1382. They await

  1383. the signal

  1384. from Moses,

  1385. but Moses

  1386. will not

  1387. lift his

  1388. hand until

  1389. he's finished

  1390. with Hobab,

  1391. and he's

  1392. not finished

  1393. with him

  1394. yet.

  1395. This

  1396. incident,

  1397. again,

  1398. I say it,

  1399. it's bulging

  1400. with the

  1401. gospel,

  1402. isn't it?

  1403. You see,

  1404. this call,

  1405. this appeal

  1406. to Hobab

  1407. to take

  1408. to the

  1409. path of

  1410. discipleship

  1411. is powerful,

  1412. but it's

  1413. also

  1414. ponyant.

  1415. There's

  1416. an urgency

  1417. to this.

  1418. There's

  1419. tension

  1420. in the

  1421. air.

  1422. Why?

  1423. Because it's

  1424. like standing

  1425. in the

  1426. last chance

  1427. saloon.

  1428. The clock

  1429. is ticking.

  1430. It's time

  1431. to go,

  1432. and there

  1433. is no

  1434. more time

  1435. to lose.

  1436. This is

  1437. it.

  1438. Decision

  1439. time,

  1440. Hobab.

  1441. Now,

  1442. can I

  1443. stop there

  1444. and ask

  1445. as we

  1446. read this,

  1447. if you

  1448. have not

  1449. as yet

  1450. resolved

  1451. to trust

  1452. in Jesus

  1453. Christ,

  1454. will you

  1455. resolve

  1456. to do

  1457. that now?

  1458. Will you

  1459. resolve

  1460. to live

  1461. for Jesus?

  1462. Will you

  1463. resolve

  1464. to sever

  1465. any ties

  1466. you have

  1467. tonight

  1468. that might

  1469. be holding

  1470. you back

  1471. from trusting

  1472. in the

  1473. Lord Jesus

  1474. Christ

  1475. as your

  1476. personal

  1477. savior?

  1478. Will you

  1479. come into

  1480. the fellowship

  1481. of the gospel

  1482. with God's

  1483. people?

  1484. Will you

  1485. say,

  1486. the world

  1487. behind me,

  1488. the cross

  1489. before me,

  1490. no turning

  1491. back?

  1492. Because when

  1493. all is said

  1494. and done,

  1495. there remains

  1496. one important

  1497. question.

  1498. Who asks

  1499. that question?

  1500. It is,

  1501. of course,

  1502. the Lord

  1503. Jesus

  1504. himself.

  1505. The question

  1506. that is put

  1507. in the passage

  1508. we read

  1509. from Matthew

    Matthew 16:26

  1510. 16,

  1511. verse 26,

  1512. 6,

  1513. what will

  1514. it profit

  1515. a man

  1516. if he gains

  1517. the whole

  1518. world

  1519. and forfeits

  1520. his own

  1521. soul?

  1522. We can

  1523. paraphrase

  1524. that ever

  1525. so slightly

  1526. because in

  1527. this verse

  1528. that I've

  1529. quoted from

  1530. Matthew

  1531. 16,

  1532. 26,

  1533. Jesus

  1534. turns the

  1535. word

  1536. good

  1537. in Numbers

  1538. 10,

  1539. 29

  1540. on its

  1541. head.

  1542. As if

  1543. to say,

  1544. what good

  1545. will it

  1546. be for

  1547. someone to

  1548. gain the

  1549. whole world

  1550. yet forfeit

  1551. their soul?

  1552. Does that

  1553. paint a

  1554. picture of

  1555. you tonight?

  1556. It certainly

  1557. paints a

  1558. picture of

  1559. Hobab.

  1560. So,

  1561. to be

  1562. or not

  1563. to be?

  1564. That is

  1565. the question.

  1566. What did

  1567. Hobab do?

  1568. How did

  1569. he respond?

  1570. What is

  1571. the outcome?

  1572. Well,

  1573. let's look

  1574. at verse

  1575. 33

  1576. because it

  1577. sheds

  1578. some light

  1579. on how

  1580. all of

  1581. this

  1582. concludes.

  1583. So,

  1584. they

  1585. set out

  1586. from the

  1587. mountain

  1588. of the

  1589. Lord.

  1590. The

  1591. ark of

  1592. the

  1593. covenant

  1594. of the

  1595. Lord

  1596. went

  1597. before

  1598. them

  1599. to

  1600. seek

  1601. out

  1602. a

  1603. resting

  1604. place

  1605. for

  1606. them.

  1607. The

  1608. cloud

  1609. of the

  1610. Lord

  1611. was

  1612. over

  1613. them

  1614. when

  1615. they

  1616. set

  1617. out

  1618. from

  1619. the

  1620. camp.

  1621. What

  1622. is so

  1623. significant

  1624. about the

  1625. pronouns

  1626. we come

  1627. across

  1628. from verse

  1629. 33?

  1630. Well,

  1631. do the

  1632. pronouns

  1633. they

  1634. and them

  1635. not include

  1636. Hobab?

  1637. Well,

  1638. I'm

  1639. persuaded

  1640. that all

  1641. five

  1642. pronouns

  1643. do

  1644. just that.

  1645. he

  1646. has

  1647. come

  1648. forward.

  1649. He's

  1650. in.

  1651. He

  1652. has

  1653. taken

  1654. that

  1655. next

  1656. step.

  1657. He's

  1658. in the

  1659. fellowship

  1660. of

  1661. Israel.

  1662. Had

  1663. he

  1664. not,

  1665. then

  1666. surely

  1667. the

  1668. passage

  1669. would

  1670. have

  1671. spelt

  1672. this

  1673. out

  1674. for

  1675. us.

  1676. If

  1677. there

  1678. had

  1679. been

  1680. a

  1681. parting

  1682. of

  1683. the

  1684. ways

  1685. at

  1686. this

  1687. decisive

  1688. point,

  1689. then

  1690. this

  1691. would

  1692. in

  1693. all

  1694. probability

  1695. be

  1696. highlighted.

  1697. But we

  1698. mustn't

  1699. stop

  1700. there

  1701. because

  1702. we need

  1703. to go

  1704. beyond

  1705. the

  1706. law

  1707. of

  1708. probability,

  1709. don't

  1710. we?

  1711. And the

  1712. Bible

  1713. does.

  1714. There

  1715. are

  1716. two

  1717. further

  1718. references

  1719. to

  1720. Hobab,

  1721. or at

  1722. least

  1723. Hobab

  1724. is being

  1725. alluded

  1726. to.

  1727. So if

  1728. you've

  1729. got your

  1730. Bible

  1731. in front

  1732. of you,

  1733. just

  1734. turn,

  1735. if you

  1736. will,

  1737. a few

  1738. books

  1739. forward

  1740. to

  1741. the

  1742. book

  1743. of

  1744. Judges.

  1745. Judges

    Judges 1:16

  1746. chapter

  1747. 1

  1748. verse

  1749. 16.

  1750. Now,

  1751. we're

  1752. turning

  1753. to the

  1754. book

  1755. of

  1756. Judges

  1757. because

  1758. the

  1759. book

  1760. of

  1761. Judges

  1762. provides

  1763. more

  1764. compelling

  1765. evidence

  1766. to

  1767. support

  1768. our

  1769. conclusion.

  1770. Judges

  1771. 1

  1772. 16,

  1773. as I

  1774. said a

  1775. moment

  1776. ago,

  1777. alludes

  1778. to

  1779. Hobab.

  1780. Let's

  1781. just get

  1782. a handle

  1783. on the

  1784. historical

  1785. context.

  1786. We are

  1787. in the

  1788. realm

  1789. of the

  1790. ongoing

  1791. conquest

  1792. of

  1793. Canaan,

  1794. so we're

  1795. some

  1796. 40 to

  1797. 60

  1798. years

  1799. on

  1800. from

  1801. the

  1802. events

  1803. that are

  1804. unfolding

  1805. in

  1806. Numbers

  1807. 10

  1808. at

  1809. Mount

  1810. Sinai.

  1811. What

  1812. do we

  1813. read

  1814. in

  1815. verse

  1816. 16?

  1817. And

  1818. the

  1819. descendants

  1820. of

  1821. the

  1822. Canaanite,

  1823. Moses'

  1824. father-in-law,

  1825. went up

  1826. with the

  1827. people of

  1828. Judah

  1829. from the

  1830. city of

  1831. Palms

  1832. into the

  1833. wilderness

  1834. of

  1835. Judah.

  1836. Now,

  1837. this

  1838. speaks

  1839. of

  1840. Hobab's

  1841. kindred,

  1842. of

  1843. Hobab's

  1844. people.

  1845. The

  1846. Canaanites

  1847. were a

  1848. subgroup

  1849. of the

  1850. Midianites.

  1851. And

  1852. this would

  1853. strongly

  1854. suggest

  1855. that

  1856. his

  1857. whole

  1858. family

  1859. have

  1860. followed

  1861. in

  1862. his

  1863. footsteps.

  1864. But

  1865. we're

  1866. not

  1867. done

  1868. yet.

  1869. There's

  1870. one

  1871. further

  1872. reference

  1873. and

  1874. you

  1875. only

  1876. have

  1877. to

  1878. turn

  1879. a

  1880. page

  1881. or

  1882. two.

  1883. We

  1884. come

  1885. to

  1886. chapter

  1887. 4

  1888. verse

  1889. 11

  1890. and

  1891. you

  1892. will

  1893. see

  1894. there

  1895. that

  1896. Hobab

  1897. is

  1898. actually

  1899. mentioned.

  1900. You

  1901. will

  1902. notice

  1903. that

  1904. more

  1905. specifically

  1906. it

  1907. refers

  1908. to

  1909. the

  1910. descendants

  1911. of

  1912. Hobab

  1913. Moses'

  1914. brother

  1915. in

  1916. law.

  1917. Now

  1918. Heber,

  1919. the

  1920. Canaanites,

  1921. had

  1922. separated

  1923. from the

  1924. Canaanites

  1925. the

  1926. descendants

  1927. of

  1928. Hobab,

  1929. the

  1930. father-in-law

  1931. of Moses

  1932. and so

  1933. on.

  1934. Now,

  1935. again,

  1936. this is

  1937. years

  1938. later.

  1939. Here we

  1940. are

  1941. in

  1942. Canaan

  1943. during the

  1944. leadership

  1945. of the

  1946. judge,

  1947. prophet,

  1948. and

  1949. mother in

  1950. Israel,

  1951. Deborah.

  1952. Two very

  1953. significant

  1954. reference

  1955. points,

  1956. all of

  1957. which take

  1958. us back

  1959. to Numbers

    Numbers 10 chapter mention

  1960. chapter 10.

  1961. So,

  1962. had

  1963. Hobab

  1964. not

  1965. followed

  1966. and his

  1967. line and

  1968. his people,

  1969. his

  1970. immediate

  1971. and extended

  1972. family,

  1973. then

  1974. he would

  1975. not be

  1976. mentioned.

  1977. So,

  1978. we conclude

  1979. that Hobab

  1980. indeed,

  1981. back in

  1982. chapter 10

  1983. of Numbers,

  1984. subscribed,

  1985. yes,

  1986. he sided

  1987. with Israel.

  1988. He takes

  1989. that step

  1990. forward

  1991. and he

  1992. walks

  1993. alongside

  1994. Moses,

  1995. grafted

  1996. into

  1997. the

  1998. commonwealth

  1999. of Israel.

  2000. you might

  2001. ask the

  2002. question,

  2003. was he

  2004. disappointed?

  2005. No.

  2006. Yes,

  2007. there are

  2008. challenges

  2009. ahead.

  2010. If you're

  2011. going to

  2012. turn the

  2013. pages of

  2014. Scripture

  2015. from Numbers

    Numbers 10 chapter mention

  2016. chapter 10

  2017. onwards,

  2018. it doesn't

  2019. always make

  2020. for good

  2021. reading.

  2022. You're

  2023. going to

  2024. read of

  2025. periods of

  2026. rebellion

  2027. and plagues

  2028. and disobedience,

  2029. but you're

  2030. also going to

  2031. read of

  2032. times of

  2033. great blessing.

  2034. You're

  2035. also going

  2036. to read of

  2037. the faithfulness

  2038. of the

  2039. covenant-keeping

  2040. God of

  2041. Israel.

  2042. You're

  2043. also going

  2044. to read,

  2045. yes,

  2046. of how

  2047. sin abounds,

  2048. but you

  2049. will read

  2050. of how

  2051. grace

  2052. does so

  2053. much more

  2054. abound

  2055. in the

  2056. history of

  2057. Israel.

  2058. And we

  2059. believe that

  2060. Hobab is a

  2061. recipient

  2062. of grace

  2063. and mercy

  2064. and peace

  2065. as he

  2066. walks

  2067. the path,

  2068. the way

  2069. of the

  2070. wilderness

  2071. with the

  2072. people of

  2073. God.

  2074. No eye

  2075. has seen,

  2076. Paul says

  2077. in 1 Corinthians

  2078. 2, 9,

  2079. no ear

  2080. has heard,

  2081. and no

  2082. human mind

  2083. has conceived

  2084. the things

  2085. God has

  2086. prepared for

  2087. those who

  2088. love him.

  2089. I'm sure

  2090. Hobab may

  2091. well have

  2092. said that

  2093. God did

  2094. immeasurably

  2095. more than

  2096. all he

  2097. could have

  2098. asked for

  2099. or imagined

  2100. back then

  2101. at Mount

  2102. Sinai,

  2103. according to

  2104. the power

  2105. at work

  2106. within

  2107. the people

  2108. of God.

  2109. To him

  2110. be the

  2111. glory in

  2112. the church

  2113. and in

  2114. Christ Jesus

  2115. throughout

  2116. all generations

  2117. forever

  2118. and ever.

  2119. Amen.

  2120. Let's

  2121. pray.

  2122. Our

  2123. heavenly

  2124. Father,

  2125. we praise

  2126. you for

  2127. the

  2128. message

  2129. of the

  2130. gospel.

  2131. We

  2132. thank you

  2133. this evening

  2134. for

  2135. the

  2136. very

  2137. compelling

  2138. tone

  2139. of the

  2140. narrative

  2141. we have

  2142. engaged

  2143. with.

  2144. And it

  2145. speaks to

  2146. us

  2147. now,

  2148. thousands

  2149. of years

  2150. later.

  2151. Perhaps

  2152. we are

  2153. standing

  2154. where

  2155. Hobab

  2156. stood.

  2157. We pray

  2158. that we

  2159. would be

  2160. constrained

  2161. by the

  2162. love of

  2163. Christ to

  2164. take that

  2165. next step

  2166. and to

  2167. walk

  2168. with your

  2169. people.

  2170. And for

  2171. those of

  2172. us who

  2173. can look

  2174. back

  2175. to that

  2176. time where

  2177. perhaps we

  2178. stood,

  2179. where Hobab

  2180. stood and

  2181. took that

  2182. next step

  2183. so we

  2184. reflect with

  2185. gratitude

  2186. and so we

  2187. would raise

  2188. our Ebenezer

  2189. and we

  2190. too can

  2191. stand next

  2192. to Samuel

  2193. and we

  2194. can say

  2195. hitherto,

  2196. thus far the

  2197. Lord has

  2198. helped us

  2199. and so may

  2200. we continue

  2201. to trust

  2202. unreservedly

  2203. in the

  2204. sufficiency

  2205. of your

  2206. grace

  2207. for the

  2208. remainder of

  2209. this day

  2210. and for

  2211. all our

  2212. days.

  2213. In

  2214. Jesus'

  2215. name,

  2216. Amen.

  2217. Well, let's

  2218. conclude our

  2219. service as

  2220. we sing

  2221. Psalm 36

  2222. from

  2223. Sing

  2224. Psalms.

  2225. The tune

  2226. is Huddersfield

  2227. verses 5

  2228. to 10

  2229. on page

  2230. 44.

  2231. Your

  2232. steadfast

  2233. love is

  2234. great,

  2235. O Lord.

  2236. it reaches

  2237. heaven high.

  2238. Your

  2239. faithfulness

  2240. is wonderful,

  2241. extending

  2242. to the

  2243. sky.

  2244. Verses

  2245. 5 to

  2246. 10

  2247. to the

  2248. praise of

  2249. God.

  2250. Amen.

  2251. Your

  2252. steadfast

  2253. love

  2254. is

  2255. great,

  2256. O Lord,

  2257. it

  2258. reaches

  2259. heaven high.

  2260. Your

  2261. faithfulness

  2262. is

  2263. wonderful,

  2264. extending

  2265. to the

  2266. sky.

  2267. Your

  2268. righteousness

  2269. is

  2270. very

  2271. great,

  2272. like mountains

  2273. high and

  2274. steep.

  2275. Your

  2276. justice

  2277. is

  2278. like

  2279. ocean

  2280. depths,

  2281. both

  2282. man and

  2283. beast

  2284. you

  2285. keep.

  2286. high

  2287. precious

  2288. is

  2289. your

  2290. sacrifice

  2291. love,

  2292. what

  2293. haunted

  2294. exit

  2295. brings,

  2296. for

  2297. high and

  2298. loof

  2299. my

  2300. sheltering

  2301. the

  2302. shadow

  2303. of

  2304. your

  2305. wings.

  2306. The

  2307. feet

  2308. within

  2309. your

  2310. hearts

  2311. and

  2312. they

  2313. come

  2314. streams

  2315. of

  2316. your

  2317. delight,

  2318. on

  2319. with

  2320. your

  2321. soul

  2322. shall

  2323. fly,

  2324. in

  2325. your

  2326. life

  2327. we

  2328. see

  2329. light.

  2330. those

  2331. who

  2332. know

  2333. you

  2334. as

  2335. their

  2336. God,

  2337. your

  2338. steadfast

  2339. life,

  2340. loving

  2341. heart,

  2342. may

  2343. take

  2344. your

  2345. righteousness

  2346. to

  2347. those

  2348. of

  2349. pure

  2350. and

  2351. upright

  2352. heart.

  2353. The

  2354. grace of

  2355. the Lord

  2356. Jesus

  2357. Christ,

  2358. the love

  2359. of God

  2360. the Father,

  2361. and the

  2362. fellowship

  2363. of the

  2364. Holy

  2365. Spirit

  2366. remain

  2367. with

  2368. us

  2369. all.

  2370. Amen.

  2371. Amen.
