  1. Well, let's turn back to our reading in 1 Samuel.

  2. !

  3. So the Philistines.

  4. But the Lord had thundered out and won the battle for the people.

  5. You see that in verse 10.

  6. But the Lord thundered with a mighty sound that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion.

  7. And they were routed before Israel.

  8. So they had won a battle.

  9. In the midst of danger, the Lord was with them.

  10. And then in verse 12, Samuel took a stone, the Ebenezer stone, the remembrance stone, and set it up.

  11. And these great words in verse 12.

  12. Till now, the Lord has helped us.

  13. So it was very much a sense of the Lord was with them in all of these things.

  14. And then in verse 15, it says, Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

  15. And he went around all the different places, bringing the word of God to the people.

  16. So that's the context of what was going on then.

  17. But then in chapter 8, as we come into chapter 8, there's a jump.

  18. There's a jump in the time frame now.

  19. And we see that in verse 1 when it says, when Samuel became old.

  20. So time has moved on.

  21. And there's a jump in the time frame here.

  22. And Samuel has become old.

  23. He's made his sons judges over Israel, his two sons.

  24. One commentator put it like this.

  25. There was one problem with Samuel.

  26. He was mortal.

  27. He couldn't go on forever.

  28. While Samuel was alive and judging the people, things were going well.

  29. Even in the midst of times of threat, like the Philistines there in chapter 7,

  30. they could still say, till now, the Lord has helped us.

  31. The Lord was with them.

  32. But now things are about to change.

  33. Samuel is an old man.

  34. He's got two sons, Joel and Abijah.

  35. But it says of them in verse 3, his sons did not walk in his ways.

  36. They didn't follow the way of Samuel following the Lord.

  37. Instead, they turned aside after gain.

  38. They took bribes and perverted justice.

  39. So this was now the leadership that was coming up behind.

  40. And it was already impacting the people.

  41. As you see, with the people of God, even up to this point,

  42. it's that recurring theme of turning away from God.

  43. And here it is again.

  44. The people's attitude is changing.

  45. Their desire towards God is changing.

  46. The repenting of their sins before God is on the way.

  47. And again, there's almost no thought of their sin coming in once more.

  48. It doesn't take long for change to come.

  49. And it's ongoing, as you see throughout the Bible,

  50. the sense of being near to God, blessing God, and then drifting away from God.

  51. You see it in the Old Testament.

  52. You see it in the New Testament.

  53. And you see it down through the ages of history to our own day.

  54. Today, it's the ongoing theme.

  55. Are we going to be with God?

  56. Are we going to be trusting God?

  57. Are we going to go our own way and do things in our own way?

  58. Well, having had God near and the blessing of God with them,

  59. we see a period of change is about to come here as well.

  60. And what do the people want?

  61. Do they want God with them?

  62. Do they see Joel and Abijah and their wicked ways,

  63. their bribery, their corruption, their perverting justice?

  64. Do they see this and say,

  65. Samuel, cry out to God for us?

  66. No, they come with their own ideas.

  67. And they want a king.

  68. They want a king over them as a people.

  69. In verse 5.

  70. Now, appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.

  71. And in many ways, it sounds right.

  72. And as we'll see in a moment, it does seem like a good request.

  73. But it's what is the motive behind it.

  74. What is behind what they're asking?

  75. They want a king just like all the other nations.

  76. But why?

  77. And for what purpose?

  78. They had been used to having judges over them,

  79. judges who were leading them towards God.

  80. But now their eyes were starting to wonder

  81. and see what else was going on around them

  82. and think, maybe we should go that way.

  83. And that's so often the problem for ourselves today as well.

  84. We can become so accustomed to calling ourselves

  85. maybe a Christian people or a Christian nation.

  86. And we think that we have everything in our hands that we need.

  87. But then we start to see little things around us

  88. that catch our attention and lead us away

  89. and make us think, well, maybe what we need

  90. is we can still have God to a degree,

  91. but we can have all these other things as well.

  92. And eventually, God is pushed out.

  93. And instead we're saying,

  94. we want to be just like everybody else around us.

  95. Just think back in our own lifetime.

  96. We had a queen, Queen Elizabeth II,

  97. who ruled for over 70 years,

  98. an incredible length of time.

  99. And for many of us, it's all we knew

  100. from a very young age up until 2022

  101. when she passed away.

  102. It's all we knew.

  103. Queen Elizabeth II was all we knew.

  104. And it's hard to imagine anybody saying

  105. during her reign,

  106. we don't want her as queen anymore.

  107. There would be maybe one or two

  108. who weren't royalists in that sense

  109. who would say it.

  110. But the majority of people would never come

  111. and say, we don't want you as queen over us anymore.

  112. You would never get like this,

  113. the elders of Israel or the parliament

  114. coming to the queen in our day and saying,

  115. we don't want you as queen anymore.

  116. We want something else.

  117. We want something different.

  118. But change often happens

  119. and it brings in a sense of a different perspective.

  120. So today, maybe many more would say,

  121. we don't want a king over us now.

  122. We had a queen for 70 years.

  123. That's long enough.

  124. Let's have something different.

  125. Let's go a different direction in our day and age.

  126. Do something different.

  127. Let's be like other nations.

  128. Let's get a president.

  129. Or let's just have somebody else over us.

  130. Or let's not have anybody at all ruling over us.

  131. Let's just do things the way we want to do it ourselves.

  132. Well, that's what was happening in Samuel's day.

  133. They'd had Samuel for a long period of time.

  134. But change is coming in and it's no longer,

  135. we don't want Samuel anymore.

  136. It's more we don't want the Lord anymore.

  137. So let's just see what our options are.

  138. And so we want to see just what this meant in Samuel's day.

  139. Sometimes we take peace for granted.

  140. Sometimes we take the blessing of God for granted,

  141. that he has given us days of peace and his goodness to us.

  142. And we start to suddenly think,

  143. maybe we don't want that anymore.

  144. We don't want the Lord anymore.

  145. And as we see the world in which we live,

  146. I almost could say it's at a tipping point today,

  147. where every nation is asking,

  148. well, who is going to be our king?

  149. Who is going to be our ruler?

  150. Who is going to help us in the midst of all that's going on?

  151. And it's all about egos and personalities.

  152. Instead of every nation of the world saying,

  153. may the Lord be king over us.

  154. We are always in danger of pushing God out.

  155. And with that, there are serious consequences.

  156. And there's three things I want us to see in this chapter today

  157. as we think of the people's request for a king.

  158. The first thing is just the request itself.

  159. We'll begin with that.

  160. The request that is made by the people.

  161. And like I say, the people's request,

  162. it's not a wrong request.

  163. In fact, if you go back to the book of Deuteronomy,

  164. it's something that the Lord has already told them

  165. that's going to be happening.

  166. And the Lord has said to them that,

  167. you will have a king over you.

  168. In Deuteronomy 17, verse 14, it says,

    Deuteronomy 17:14

  169. when you come to the land,

  170. the Lord your God is giving you,

  171. and you possess it and dwell in it,

  172. and then say, I will set a king over me

  173. like all the nations that are around me.

  174. You may indeed set a king over you

  175. whom the Lord your God will choose.

  176. So the request itself wasn't wrong.

  177. They had heard from the Lord that this was going to happen,

  178. that this would take place.

  179. And here in this tipping point in their history,

  180. they're about to move from having judges over them

  181. to having a king over them.

  182. And you think, great, we're going to see the Lord

  183. working out his plan.

  184. But there's a problem.

  185. When you look at Deuteronomy,

  186. it says, a king over you

  187. whom the Lord your God will choose.

  188. But here in verse 5, it's saying,

  189. now appoint for us a king

  190. to judge us like all the nations.

  191. They are wanting to have their say.

  192. It's not about the Lord's choosing,

  193. but just their own desires.

  194. And so from here we see the request for a king,

  195. not itself wrong,

  196. but it's a motive behind it that is wrong.

  197. You could say the people were right to call for a change.

  198. They see, Samuel, you're old.

  199. Your sons are taking bribes and perverting justice.

  200. Something's got to change.

  201. So we're going to take it into our own hands.

  202. And we are going to sort out this mess.

  203. But what they want is to be like all the other nations.

  204. It's a testing time for the people.

  205. And they're wondering which direction to go in.

  206. And what they want is, as you see down in verse 20,

  207. we want a king,

  208. that our king may judge us

  209. and go out before us and fight our battles.

  210. It says there,

  211. they're wanting a king who's going to do what they want

  212. and the way they wanted.

  213. And the people did not trust God in their battles.

  214. That's what they're saying here.

  215. We need a king who will go before us in our battles.

  216. If we are going to be successful,

  217. we must be like all the other nations around us.

  218. Because we look at them,

  219. they've got a kings themselves.

  220. That's the way we need to go.

  221. They didn't want to be different to everybody else.

  222. And therein is the challenge

  223. that the people had to face up to.

  224. Who did they want to be?

  225. Where was their identity to be found?

  226. Just like everybody else around them

  227. or their identity in the Lord

  228. and the Lord as their king.

  229. And that's the challenge for ourselves today as well.

  230. Whether it's individually

  231. or collectively as a church

  232. or even as a nation,

  233. a nations of the world.

  234. It's what are we going to be like?

  235. You see in so many ways

  236. that every nation

  237. and all the leaders,

  238. they want to be the ones taking the lead.

  239. We want to be the ones going ahead

  240. of everybody else,

  241. setting the tone,

  242. setting the ways

  243. that others might follow us.

  244. You think of the discussion

  245. and the debate going on

  246. over assisted suicide just now.

  247. It's like,

  248. well, we're seeing other people doing it.

  249. We're seeing other nations doing it.

  250. Let's be like them.

  251. Let's be like them.

  252. Let's show that we are just like

  253. everybody else around us.

  254. That we're open-minded.

  255. That we're the ones in control.

  256. That we're the ones who have power.

  257. Let's just push what God is saying

  258. in his word away from us.

  259. And let's just be like the rest.

  260. But if we are to be God's people,

  261. we are to be different.

  262. We are called to be holy

  263. and to be set apart.

  264. And to stand apart

  265. from everything else

  266. that goes against

  267. the word of God

  268. and say,

  269. no,

  270. we are not just going to be like

  271. all the rest around us.

  272. We're not going to have

  273. the king over us

  274. as just the king of this world.

  275. When we have the king

  276. of the heavens and the earth.

  277. When we have the king

  278. who made all things,

  279. who has everything in his hands.

  280. Why would we want to be like

  281. everybody else around us?

  282. So what is our motive in life?

  283. The motive behind the request here

  284. was that they would be like

  285. all the other nations.

  286. Well, as a people,

  287. what do we want?

  288. Do we want to be like

  289. everybody else around us

  290. who pushes God out?

  291. Do we want to be like

  292. other nations

  293. that just do things

  294. their own way?

  295. At the end of the book of Judges,

  296. it says the people did

  297. what was right in their own eyes.

  298. They had no king over them.

  299. And that's what happens.

  300. We descend into that chaos.

  301. We just do what is right

  302. in our own eyes,

  303. but we are called to be holy,

  304. to be set apart.

  305. And what the Lord is saying here

  306. is the request of the people.

  307. They are not rejecting you, Samuel.

  308. They are rejecting me.

  309. In verse 7,

  310. Obey the voice of the people

  311. in all that they say to you,

  312. for they have not rejected you,

  313. but they have rejected me

  314. from being king over them.

  315. Rejecting the Lord as king.

  316. The same thing that Jesus speaks about

  317. in the parable of the 10 minutes

  318. in Luke chapter 19,

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  319. where it says,

  320. we do not want this man

  321. to reign over us.

  322. They were rejecting

  323. the Lord as king.

  324. Are you?

  325. Are you rejecting

  326. the Lord as king today?

  327. Are you rejecting Jesus?

  328. I will not have this man

  329. reign over me.

  330. Think about what that means.

  331. You want to be like

  332. just the rest of the world

  333. around you.

  334. But where is the world going?

  335. Descending into darkness

  336. and chaos.

  337. When in the king,

  338. our king as Jesus,

  339. we have one who is light,

  340. who is truth,

  341. who is life.

  342. What are we asking for?

  343. Well, the second thing we see

  344. is the response that God gives.

  345. And herein we see

  346. the Lord make clear

  347. this is what you are asking for.

  348. Just so you may be aware,

  349. you need to hear

  350. this voice.

  351. It says in verse 9,

  352. Now then,

  353. obey their voice.

  354. Only you shall solemnly

  355. warn them

  356. and show them

  357. the ways of the king

  358. who will rule

  359. over them.

  360. So,

  361. the Lord is saying,

  362. Samuel,

  363. they're not just rejecting you,

  364. they're rejecting me

  365. as their king.

  366. But warn them.

  367. Warn them if this is the way

  368. they want to go,

  369. that this is the kind of king

  370. that they are going to have

  371. over them.

  372. So,

  373. he gives them a clear warning

  374. that things

  375. are not going to be

  376. what they might expect.

  377. And there's a lesson there

  378. for ourselves.

  379. Today's a lesson

  380. we see in Psalm 106,

    Psalms 106:15

  381. verse 15,

  382. where the psalmist says,

  383. He gave them their request.

  384. He gave them what they wanted,

  385. what the people wanted.

  386. And then it says this,

  387. He sent leanness

  388. into their soul.

  389. They got what they wanted,

  390. where did it take them?

  391. Leanness

  392. in their soul.

  393. They were missing out

  394. on the blessing

  395. of God.

  396. Be careful

  397. what you ask for,

  398. for you might just

  399. regret it.

  400. And that's the kind of world

  401. that we are living in

  402. today as well.

  403. Where our requests

  404. are saying,

  405. we don't want

  406. the Lord as king,

  407. we want the kings

  408. like other nations.

  409. Let's be careful

  410. what we ask for.

  411. What lesson do we learn

  412. in God's word

  413. in the Old and New Testament

  414. when we see the history

  415. of the nations

  416. in the world?

  417. Well, we see that

  418. when God gives the people

  419. the desires of their hearts,

  420. it so often descends

  421. into moral chaos

  422. and corruption.

  423. Like I mentioned,

  424. the days of the judges,

  425. they had no king over them,

  426. and they did what was right

  427. in their own eyes.

  428. The same is true

  429. in the book of Romans,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  430. chapter 1.

  431. When you go through

  432. that chapter,

  433. you see chaos descending.

  434. Why?

  435. Because in verse 22,

  436. it says,

  437. claiming to be wise,

  438. they became fools

  439. and exchanged the glory

  440. of the immortal God

  441. for images resembling

  442. mortal man

  443. and birds and animals

  444. and creeping things.

  445. Therefore,

  446. God gave them up

  447. in the lusts

  448. of their hearts

  449. to impurity.

  450. He gave them over

  451. to the desire

  452. of their hearts.

  453. Do you want to be

  454. just like the people

  455. around you?

  456. Do you want to find

  457. your fun

  458. and your satisfaction

  459. and your pleasure

  460. and wholeness

  461. in everything

  462. that the world

  463. has to offer?

  464. Is that the way

  465. you want to go?

  466. Well, be careful

  467. because there are consequences.

  468. Be careful

  469. the direction

  470. it takes you

  471. because it leads us

  472. away from the grace

  473. of God

  474. and leads us

  475. into chaos

  476. and that's what we see

  477. in the next few verses

  478. from verse 10

  479. down to verse 18.

  480. We see the chaos

  481. it leads to

  482. going completely

  483. the wrong direction.

  484. A world class

  485. runner

  486. was once

  487. invited

  488. to a race

  489. in a major city

  490. in America

  491. and they were

  492. very excited

  493. to go to this race

  494. a very prestigious race

  495. with a great reward

  496. if you won

  497. and so this runner

  498. she went

  499. to the city

  500. and thought

  501. she knew

  502. where she was going

  503. as she'd been

  504. given directions

  505. but as she came

  506. into the city

  507. she found herself

  508. thinking she was

  509. in the right place

  510. but not sure

  511. exactly where to go

  512. so she stopped

  513. at a shop

  514. and asked

  515. there's a race

  516. taking place today

  517. can you tell me

  518. where it is?

  519. Oh yes

  520. the shop assistant

  521. said there's this race

  522. it's just about

  523. a mile up the road

  524. there if you make

  525. your way up

  526. you'll find

  527. it's just about

  528. to start

  529. you'll find

  530. the runners there

  531. and so she left

  532. and hurried

  533. arrived just in time

  534. to register

  535. and enter the race

  536. there was fewer

  537. runners than she

  538. anticipated being there

  539. and she thought

  540. well it gives me

  541. a better chance

  542. and so she ran

  543. in this race

  544. and she came first

  545. a few minutes

  546. ahead of everybody else

  547. she was delighted

  548. at first

  549. but then she started

  550. to realise

  551. there's no talk

  552. of the prize

  553. being given

  554. she got a medal

  555. and that was it

  556. but she was expecting

  557. money

  558. and she said

  559. oh I'm sorry

  560. there was no prize

  561. fund for this

  562. is this not the race

  563. such and such

  564. oh no

  565. that's in a town

  566. seven miles away

  567. so she had just

  568. ran a race

  569. on the wrong

  570. course

  571. and missed the chance

  572. of winning the prize

  573. because she was given

  574. the wrong direction

  575. and that's the way

  576. we are living today

  577. we are seeking

  578. a prize

  579. but the prize

  580. of being offered

  581. is very different

  582. to what the Lord

  583. offers

  584. we're in the wrong

  585. race

  586. when we choose

  587. to reject God

  588. and to turn away

  589. from him

  590. and notice

  591. the way the Lord

  592. speaks

  593. here in these verses

  594. notice the word

  595. that is used

  596. so often

  597. he will take

  598. that's all

  599. that keeps appearing

  600. in verse 10

  601. through to verse 18

  602. he will take

  603. your sons

  604. he will take

  605. your daughters

  606. he will take

  607. the tenth

  608. of your great gain

  609. and he will take

  610. your male servants

  611. and female servants

  612. he will take

  613. the tenth

  614. of your flocks

  615. everything here

  616. this king

  617. is going to be

  618. about taking

  619. away

  620. they are going

  621. to lose

  622. so much

  623. he will take

  624. he will take

  625. he will take

  626. and that's what

  627. the king

  628. of this world

  629. offers

  630. that's what

  631. the world

  632. offers to us

  633. come in this

  634. direction

  635. but it's all

  636. about

  637. I will take

  638. from you

  639. I will take

  640. from you

  641. and we are

  642. in danger

  643. of losing

  644. everything

  645. we are in

  646. danger of

  647. losing

  648. the blessing

  649. of God

  650. we are in

  651. danger of

  652. losing

  653. the gospel

  654. we are in

  655. danger of

  656. losing

  657. our life

  658. our very

  659. soul

  660. if we choose

  661. to go in

  662. this direction

  663. because the

  664. God of this

  665. world is

  666. the devil

  667. and he

  668. will take

  669. take

  670. everything

  671. away from

  672. us

  673. take our

  674. very soul

  675. if he has

  676. opportunity

  677. he will

  678. take

  679. he will

  680. take

  681. he will

  682. take

  683. and we're

  684. left

  685. with nothing

  686. this is

  687. the king

  688. that the

  689. people

  690. have asked

  691. for

  692. and look

  693. at the

  694. response

  695. even when

  696. God

  697. says

  698. this is

  699. the kind

  700. of king

  701. you will

  702. have in

  703. verse 19

  704. but the

  705. people

  706. refused

  707. to obey

  708. the voice

  709. of Samuel

  710. and said

  711. no

  712. but there

  713. shall be

  714. a king

  715. over us

  716. we are

  717. warned

  718. in the

  719. gospel

  720. of the

  721. consequences

  722. of rejecting

  723. the lord

  724. as our

  725. king

  726. everything

  727. will be

  728. taken

  729. from us

  730. will you

  731. say

  732. no

  733. but I

  734. will still

  735. have

  736. this world

  737. as my

  738. king

  739. I will

  740. have this

  741. world

  742. as my

  743. domain

  744. I will

  745. have the

  746. pleasures

  747. of this

  748. world

  749. as my

  750. playground

  751. will you

  752. have

  753. that

  754. but lose

  755. your soul

  756. he will

  757. take

  758. he will

  759. take

  760. he will

  761. take

  762. well let's

  763. see

  764. as we

  765. think of

  766. the response

  767. of God

  768. let's see

  769. the reasoning

  770. why we

  771. must come

  772. to our

  773. senses

  774. the people

  775. refused

  776. to obey

  777. the voice

  778. of Samuel

  779. they wanted

  780. their own

  781. king

  782. but what

  783. should they

  784. have asked

  785. for

  786. they should

  787. have asked

  788. for what

  789. God gave

  790. them in

  791. Deuteronomy

  792. the king

  793. of his

  794. choosing

  795. and that's

  796. the king

  797. that we

  798. need to

  799. do

  800. that's

  801. the king

  802. that you

  803. and I

  804. both need

  805. to do

  806. because what

  807. will it

  808. profit a

  809. man if he

  810. gains the

  811. whole world

  812. but yet

  813. loses

  814. his soul

  815. we need

  816. the Lord

  817. as our

  818. king

  819. we need

  820. Jesus

  821. as

  822. our

  823. king

  824. a king

  825. not who

  826. takes

  827. who takes

  828. who takes

  829. but who

  830. gives

  831. a king

  832. who came

  833. not to be

  834. served

  835. but to

  836. serve

  837. a king

  838. who came

  839. not to

  840. take life

  841. but to

  842. give his

  843. life

  844. and to

  845. give his

  846. life as

  847. a ransom

  848. for many

  849. a king

  850. who says

  851. I have

  852. come

  853. that they

  854. might have

  855. life

  856. and life

  857. in abundance

  858. the one

  859. who has

  860. come

  861. to give

  862. to give

  863. and to

  864. give

  865. and yet

  866. we would

  867. say we

  868. don't want

  869. this king

  870. it would

  871. be madness

  872. it would

  873. be foolishness

  874. to see a

  875. selfish king

  876. who would

  877. take and

  878. take and

  879. take and

  880. said

  881. that's my

  882. king

  883. that's what

  884. I want

  885. instead

  886. to see

  887. Jesus

  888. who says

  889. I give

  890. I give

  891. my life

  892. for you

  893. I give

  894. you life

  895. I give

  896. you life

  897. eternal

  898. so will

  899. you not

  900. come

  901. to me

  902. will you

  903. not have

  904. me

  905. as king

  906. over you

  907. it's such

  908. a difference

  909. that Jesus

  910. makes

  911. as king

  912. to his

  913. people

  914. the difference

  915. he makes

  916. to us

  917. individually

  918. the difference

  919. he makes

  920. to us

  921. as a

  922. church

  923. the difference

  924. he makes

  925. to us

  926. as a land

  927. and as

  928. nations

  929. of the

  930. world

  931. if we

  932. would

  933. but say

  934. lord

  935. be king

  936. over us

  937. rule

  938. over us

  939. the world

  940. will take

  941. but Jesus

  942. gives

  943. and so

  944. what is

  945. our desire

  946. today

  947. what is

  948. your desire

  949. today

  950. when you

  951. think of

  952. who is

  953. king

  954. over you

  955. who do

  956. you want

  957. as king

  958. do you

  959. want the

  960. world

  961. that will

  962. take your

  963. soul

  964. or do you

  965. want Jesus

  966. who will

  967. give you

  968. life

  969. individually

  970. every one

  971. of us

  972. should desire

  973. to find

  974. that life

  975. in Jesus

  976. as our

  977. king

  978. and collectively

  979. as a

  980. church

  981. here

  982. let's have

  983. Jesus

  984. as our

  985. king

  986. as our

  987. focus

  988. the one

  989. who has

  990. given

  991. his life

  992. for his

  993. church

  994. as a

  995. nation

  996. may we

  997. pray

  998. that Jesus

  999. would be

  1000. king

  1001. that he

  1002. would rule

  1003. in all

  1004. things

  1005. in our

  1006. parliaments

  1007. in Westminster

  1008. in Holyrood

  1009. in all our

  1010. leadership

  1011. throughout our

  1012. land

  1013. in all

  1014. our

  1015. homes

  1016. and all

  1017. our

  1018. families

  1019. that Jesus

  1020. would be

  1021. king

  1022. and in

  1023. our world

  1024. in which we

  1025. see so

  1026. many

  1027. troubles

  1028. may we

  1029. pray

  1030. that Jesus

  1031. would be

  1032. king

  1033. and bring

  1034. peace

  1035. and stability

  1036. may we

  1037. as a

  1038. people

  1039. not refuse

  1040. the king

  1041. that is

  1042. before us

  1043. but receive

  1044. the king

  1045. of kings

  1046. and the

  1047. lord of

  1048. lords

  1049. with gladness

  1050. with joy

  1051. and with

  1052. praise

  1053. he is

  1054. there for

  1055. us

  1056. the people

  1057. in Samuel's

  1058. day they

  1059. wanted to be

  1060. like all

  1061. the other

  1062. nations

  1063. rejecting

  1064. the lord

  1065. as king

  1066. may we

  1067. not be

  1068. may we

  1069. instead

  1070. receive

  1071. our king

  1072. with joy

  1073. and look

  1074. to him

  1075. and give

  1076. thanks to

  1077. him

  1078. that he

  1079. has come

  1080. not to

  1081. take

  1082. but to

  1083. give

  1084. blessing

  1085. upon

  1086. blessing

  1087. to his

  1088. people

  1089. if they

  1090. will but

  1091. return

  1092. to him

  1093. let us

  1094. pray

  1095. our father

  1096. in heaven

  1097. we thank

  1098. you for

  1099. the one

  1100. who is

  1101. king

  1102. over all

  1103. and yet

  1104. the one

  1105. who is

  1106. rejected

  1107. by many

  1108. and we

  1109. pray

  1110. lord

  1111. that we

  1112. would

  1113. have

  1114. only

  1115. the lord

  1116. as our

  1117. king

  1118. jesus

  1119. as the

  1120. one

  1121. who is

  1122. on the

  1123. throne

  1124. high

  1125. may we

  1126. lift his

  1127. name up

  1128. and may

  1129. we praise

  1130. him

  1131. for all

  1132. his goodness

  1133. to us

  1134. that he

  1135. has come

  1136. that he

  1137. might give

  1138. for his

  1139. people

  1140. and give

  1141. to his

  1142. people

  1143. we ask

  1144. oh lord

  1145. that you

  1146. would guide

  1147. our every

  1148. step

  1149. in his

  1150. paths

  1151. as we

  1152. ask it

  1153. with the

  1154. forgiveness

  1155. of our

  1156. sin

  1157. in his

  1158. precious

  1159. name

  1160. amen

  1161. we're

  1162. going to

  1163. conclude

  1164. by singing

  1165. to god's

  1166. praise

  1167. in

  1168. psalm

  1169. 106

  1170. page

  1171. 378

  1172. psalm 106

  1173. at verse

  1174. 1

  1175. we sing

  1176. from verse

  1177. 1 to

  1178. verse

  1179. 5

  1180. the tune

  1181. is

  1182. Huddersfield

  1183. give

  1184. praise

  1185. and

  1186. thanks

  1187. unto

  1188. the

  1189. lord

  1190. for

  1191. bountiful

  1192. is

  1193. he

  1194. his

  1195. tender

  1196. mercy

  1197. doth

  1198. endure

  1199. into

  1200. eternity

  1201. god's

  1202. mighty

  1203. works

  1204. who

  1205. can

  1206. express

  1207. or

  1208. show

  1209. forth

  1210. all

  1211. his

  1212. praise

  1213. blessed

  1214. are

  1215. they

  1216. that

  1217. they

  1218. that

  1219. judgment

  1220. keep

  1221. and

  1222. justly

  1223. do

  1224. always

  1225. we sing

  1226. from

  1227. verse

  1228. 1 to

  1229. 5

  1230. to

  1231. God's

  1232. praise

  1233. praise

  1241. bountiful

  1242. is

  1248. doth

  1249. endure

  1250. unto

  1251. eternity

  1252. !

  1253. O

  1254. mighty

  1255. words

  1256. to

  1257. come

  1258. express

  1259. our

  1260. show

  1261. for

  1262. love

  1263. his

  1264. praise

  1265. blessed

  1268. of

  1269. judgment

  1270. keep

  1271. our

  1272. judgment

  1273. justly

  1274. do

  1275. always

  1276. !

  1277. Remember

  1278. me

  1279. your

  1280. breath

  1281. and love

  1282. which

  1283. thou

  1284. to

  1285. thine

  1286. dost

  1287. fail!

  1288. with

  1289. thy

  1290. salvation

  1291. O

  1292. my

  1293. God

  1294. to

  1295. visit

  1296. me

  1309. their

  1310. joy

  1312. !

  1313. and

  1314. may

  1315. with

  1316. love

  1317. love

1324. i'll go to the main door we'll close with the benediction
