  1. Well, we can turn back together to look at our reading in Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. We're particularly focusing on the last part of the chapter, verse 19 down to verse 30.

  4. !

  5. We have Timothy, a fellow servant who we hear quite a bit of throughout Paul's writings.

  6. He was very close with Timothy, a younger servant in the Lord to what Paul was and very much

  7. alongside Paul in the ministry.

  8. But we also have this man Epaphroditus mentioned.

  9. And it's him that we're kind of focusing on this evening in the sense of one who is only

  10. mentioned in this letter and just very briefly mentioned.

  11. And he's very much maybe an unsung hero.

  12. So that's what we're going to be thinking about this evening.

  13. But as you work your way through the letter to the Philippians as a whole, as you're looking

  14. at the letter, you can read through it very quickly.

  15. It's not a long letter, but it's so worthwhile going back to again and again.

  16. It's a beautiful letter inspired by God that Paul writes to the church at Philippi.

  17. There's so much we can learn from it.

  18. And as you read through it, you find there's so much richness in the sense of theology that

  19. we learn.

  20. We're learning all about God and the wonder of God and what Christ has done for us.

  21. But mixed in with that is also what it's like to live as a Christian on a day-to-day experience.

  22. And the danger is of saying it like that, you separate the two things.

  23. That we see one part of learning about theology, learning about God.

  24. There may be things that are hard to understand, so we maybe leave that for some people.

  25. And then we might take other parts that are more practical.

  26. And it can work the other way around as well.

  27. But what you find is that the two go together.

  28. Both are just as important as each other.

  29. We need the theology and we need to live that out in our lives on a day-to-day experience.

  30. Professor Donald MacLeod in his book, Behold Your God, he has a great quote in that book

  31. where he says,

  32. It is impossible to honour God as we ought unless we know him as he is.

  33. And that really reminds us how the two things just go together so perfectly.

  34. We need to know God, we need to know him as he is in order to honour him as we live out our lives.

  35. So it's not just a case of looking at the important things as the big theological things we can learn here.

  36. And the practical things are less important.

  37. That's not it at all.

  38. Because we think of our Christian lives and how we live on a day-to-day basis.

  39. What's more important for us?

  40. Is it coming to church on a Sunday?

  41. That's more important than the other six days that we live?

  42. Or are the other days important that we class the church as maybe less important?

  43. It's neither.

  44. It's the two.

  45. It's important for us to gather together for worship on the Lord's Day, on a Sunday,

  46. to learn more about God, to learn about his word.

  47. But the other six days, they're not mundane and unimportant.

  48. That's where we live out all that we've learned.

  49. How we live out in a practical way, an experience of the God we're getting to know more.

  50. Or the Christ we're coming to serve.

  51. Or how the Spirit works in our midst.

  52. How we call upon him in prayer to help us.

  53. It all goes together.

  54. And this morning we were thinking about having a king over us.

  55. In 1 Samuel chapter 8, we were looking at the desire of the people there.

    1 Samuel 8 chapter mention

  56. When Samuel was getting old, people came with this request.

  57. Give us a king over us like all the other nations.

  58. We're asking, well, who is to be our king?

  59. And is the Lord Jesus our king?

  60. Well, this evening we're sort of following up on that.

  61. How do we live then with Jesus as our king?

  62. And what we see here is examples of how people live with Jesus as their king.

  63. The example of Paul.

  64. Paul who had that amazing conversion.

  65. The conversion that so many people look for in their own experience, but so few get.

  66. So you have Paul that is often raised up.

  67. And we maybe strive to long for something like that.

  68. But you have Timothy, who was brought up by a loving mother and a grandmother,

  69. who cared for him and nurtured him quite gently,

  70. but helped him to grow up in the knowledge of God.

  71. And then you have Epaphroditus here.

  72. Someone who's just almost in the background, who knows very little about.

  73. And you see here there's a variety of different people.

  74. But they are all living to serve their king.

  75. They are all a people who have come to know the Lord Jesus in a very personal way.

  76. And living for him with all their different gifts and their talents.

  77. Paul was no maverick.

  78. He was no individual.

  79. He just went out and did things by himself in his own way.

  80. He always had people around him who helped him.

  81. And together they worked for the glory of God.

  82. And as you read through Paul's letters,

  83. as you read through them, you find he crossed paths with so many different people.

  84. So many different individuals.

  85. And so many of them were a great blessing to his life and to his ministry.

  86. And what you find is in nearly all his letters,

  87. he ends with a personal note of thanksgiving

  88. for those who have been so helpful to him in the ministry.

  89. In the last chapter of the book of Romans, for example,

  90. chapter 16, almost a whole chapter is taken up to naming individuals

  91. who have been with them and who have helped them.

  92. Men and women along the way.

  93. And there's at least 35 people named in that chapter

  94. who have been precious to him.

  95. And I think of a recent AGM just over a week ago.

  96. And an AGM in a congregation is a time when we often think of

  97. all the different work that goes on in the congregation.

  98. And the pity is that we don't have the AGM with this number of people.

  99. Because there's so many people who need to hear a word of thanksgiving

  100. for all that is going on in the congregation.

  101. And so as we're thinking this evening of Epaphroditus, an unsung hero,

  102. it's not with a view to a plea for service to the church.

  103. It's not that at all, and I hope it doesn't come across like that,

  104. asking for more.

  105. It's with a sense of thanksgiving that together we are serving our Lord and our King.

  106. That here in our own congregation we have many who are like Epaphroditus,

  107. who we maybe hear very little of, but who we can encourage

  108. because they are encouragers in all that is done in the name of the Lord here.

  109. Young and old alike, men, women, boys, girls,

  110. so many people even here this evening who are involved,

  111. are tuning in online tonight,

  112. who are involved in the work of the congregation in so many different ways.

  113. And it all comes from having that servant mentality,

  114. a servant outlook on everything.

  115. And that's what Epaphroditus had.

  116. It's what Paul and Timothy had too.

  117. But we're reflecting more on Epaphroditus this evening.

  118. He very much had, first of all, as we see, a servant's heart.

  119. He had a servant's heart.

  120. And from the little we learn of him here, you can see that.

  121. When we are called by Christ,

  122. when we come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  123. it's just the beginning of a life being lived for him.

  124. And we need to grow in our knowledge of him,

  125. to see Jesus Christ,

  126. to love him more,

  127. to know him more,

  128. to serve him more.

  129. And it begins by seeing him as he was,

  130. in all that he did for us.

  131. And you think,

  132. as we mentioned this morning,

  133. Jesus came into this world.

  134. He was a king.

  135. But he didn't come to be served.

  136. As the Gospel of Mark says,

  137. he didn't come to be served,

  138. but to serve and to give his life

  139. as a ransom for many.

  140. That was the way our king came,

  141. to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  142. So the more we know Jesus in that way,

  143. the more that we see what he has done for us,

  144. the more that we see his grace and his love

  145. towards us as sinners,

  146. the more that we understand of all of these things,

  147. the more we see what a privilege it is

  148. to serve our king.

  149. That we are no longer serving the things of this world,

  150. that we are no longer serving in the darkness of this world,

  151. but that we are serving with a servant heart

  152. that the Lord Jesus Christ has given to us.

  153. That's what we see with Paul and Timothy and Epaphroditus

  154. and so many others that Paul mentions

  155. as he is giving thanks for those who helped in his ministry.

  156. We are to cultivate this heart of a servant

  157. and to grow in Christ.

  158. When we are young,

  159. we are often encouraged to have good role models.

  160. And I'm sure there's many of the young people

  161. here this evening,

  162. you're being encouraged maybe

  163. to look up to somebody else,

  164. maybe someone in the family

  165. or someone in the community

  166. and saying,

  167. there's a good example to follow.

  168. There's someone you can look at

  169. and see how they're living their lives

  170. and you follow that example.

  171. You come alongside these people

  172. and learn from them.

  173. And it's so good when in a congregation

  174. of God's people,

  175. these kinds of things happen naturally.

  176. When we see our young people coming in

  177. and the older people,

  178. we can just come alongside in a natural way

  179. and encourage.

  180. Ask them questions.

  181. Ask how their wake has gone.

  182. And that the young people can ask

  183. about their experience.

  184. How long have you been a Christian?

  185. What's it like being a Christian?

  186. We learn from one another.

  187. It comes from that kind of servant heart.

  188. We were learning by examples.

  189. And Paul was very much an example to Timothy,

  190. as he was to Epaphroditus.

  191. But they learned from each other as well.

  192. It was a two-way interaction.

  193. They all had this servant heart

  194. where they recognized

  195. they were in this together.

  196. Because their greatest example was

  197. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  198. And you see that in the beginning

  199. of chapter 2

  200. where Paul is speaking about

  201. Christ's example of humility.

  202. humility.

  203. To think on all the things

  204. that Jesus has done for us.

  205. To think of how he humbled himself.

  206. And that's the basis of our servant heart as well.

  207. The foundation of ourselves

  208. growing together,

  209. young and old alike.

  210. You see it with Paul

  211. how he has developed

  212. over the years.

  213. You see it here

  214. even in chapter 2

  215. verse 19

  216. where he says,

  217. I hope

  218. to send Timothy

  219. to you soon.

  220. Well that's not what he says,

  221. is it?

  222. He says,

  223. I hope

  224. in the Lord Jesus

  225. to send Timothy

  226. to you soon.

  227. You see,

  228. he's learning.

  229. And then he says

  230. in verse 24,

  231. 24,

  232. and I trust

  233. that shortly

  234. I myself

  235. will come also.

  236. No,

  237. he says,

  238. I trust

  239. in the Lord

  240. that shortly

  241. I myself

  242. will come also.

  243. So he's adding

  244. these little things.

  245. He's showing

  246. his focus

  247. is on the Lord Jesus

  248. in doing

  249. his will.

  250. And that's

  251. the servant heart

  252. that he has.

  253. That's the way

  254. that he is living.

  255. And that's the example

  256. that he's giving

  257. to Epaphroditus

  258. and to Timothy

  259. as well.

  260. And they are

  261. learning this

  262. together.

  263. Look at the way

  264. he describes

  265. Epaphroditus

  266. in verse 25.

  267. I thought it

  268. necessary to send

  269. to you,

  270. Epaphroditus,

  271. my brother

  272. and my fellow

  273. worker

  274. and fellow

  275. soldier.

  276. Three different

  277. ways

  278. he describes

  279. him.

  280. My brother,

  281. my fellow

  282. worker,

  283. and my

  284. fellow soldier.

  285. And so he's

  286. showing us here

  287. the kind of

  288. servant heart

  289. that Epaphroditus

  290. had.

  291. He was

  292. a brother

  293. in the Lord.

  294. What a wonderful

  295. privilege it is

  296. for us

  297. to have brothers

  298. and sisters

  299. in the Lord.

  300. To have those

  301. who are alongside

  302. us in this work

  303. encouraging each

  304. other,

  305. praying for each

  306. other,

  307. looking out for

  308. each other.

  309. what a wonderful

  310. privilege it

  311. is.

  312. So we have

  313. brothers and

  314. sisters.

  315. We have

  316. fellow workers.

  317. We have those

  318. who are working

  319. with that same

  320. heart,

  321. that same

  322. mind.

  323. It is to serve

  324. Christ as our

  325. king.

  326. And we are

  327. fellow soldiers.

  328. We are in this

  329. battle,

  330. because it is a

  331. battle at times.

  332. We are battling

  333. against the powers

  334. of this world,

  335. but we are not

  336. doing it alone.

  337. We are doing it

  338. together.

  339. And so we can

  340. look around this

  341. evening and see

  342. we are brothers

  343. and sisters

  344. in Christ.

  345. We are fellow

  346. workers in the

  347. gospel.

  348. We are fellow

  349. soldiers in this

  350. battle.

  351. We need to be

  352. united in all

  353. of these things.

  354. John Wesley

  355. once learned

  356. a very harsh

  357. lesson in terms

  358. of judging

  359. others.

  360. There was this

  361. man who had

  362. been converted.

  363. But ever since

  364. he had been

  365. converted,

  366. John Wesley

  367. had kind of

  368. looked down

  369. on him.

  370. He had seen

  371. him as someone

  372. who he thought

  373. was greedy,

  374. who wasn't

  375. generous with

  376. what he had.

  377. And one day

  378. when they were

  379. having a collection

  380. for a special

  381. cause,

  382. John Wesley

  383. saw this man

  384. put so little

  385. into the

  386. collection that he

  387. openly criticized

  388. him.

  389. In front of

  390. others he

  391. criticized him

  392. for the little

  393. that he put

  394. in.

  395. It was challenging

  396. him,

  397. rebuking him.

  398. But after that

  399. the man went

  400. to John Wesley

  401. privately and

  402. spoke to him.

  403. And this

  404. suddenly opened

  405. John Wesley's

  406. eyes.

  407. Because what

  408. the man said

  409. to him was

  410. that for the

  411. last number

  412. of months

  413. he'd been

  414. living off

  415. only parsnips

  416. and water.

  417. That's all

  418. he was living

  419. off.

  420. And he

  421. wasn't buying

  422. himself anything.

  423. And he

  424. explained it

  425. in this way

  426. before his

  427. conversion

  428. he had found

  429. himself in

  430. debt to so

  431. many different

  432. people.

  433. And because

  434. he had no

  435. thought,

  436. nothing was

  437. convicting his

  438. conscience,

  439. he didn't think

  440. anything of being

  441. in debt to

  442. these people

  443. and he wasn't

  444. paying it back.

  445. But he

  446. said,

  447. when he

  448. became a

  449. Christian,

  450. Christ made

  451. me an

  452. honest man.

  453. And he

  454. recognized that

  455. he had to

  456. pay back

  457. all of his

  458. debts.

  459. So every

  460. spare penny

  461. he said,

  462. after my

  463. tithe I

  464. have so

  465. little left,

  466. I pay

  467. my debts.

  468. And all

  469. of a sudden

  470. John Wesley

  471. realized this

  472. heart,

  473. the man's

  474. heart was

  475. for the

  476. Lord.

  477. In

  478. recognizing

  479. what he

  480. owed to

  481. others.

  482. And how

  483. he was

  484. living his

  485. life honoring

  486. the Lord.

  487. Doing it

  488. quietly,

  489. hidden in

  490. many ways,

  491. and yet

  492. criticized by

  493. others.

  494. But John

  495. Wesley

  496. apologized to

  497. the man.

  498. And we

  499. can't judge

  500. those around

  501. us.

  502. We don't

  503. know what's

  504. going on in

  505. people's

  506. lives.

  507. But we

  508. should be

  509. thankful that

  510. we see the

  511. servant heart

  512. that there is

  513. in so many.

  514. In so many

  515. years,

  516. together

  517. here,

  518. just like

  519. Epaphrodite

  520. is with

  521. Paul and

  522. Timothy,

  523. all having

  524. that servant

  525. heart,

  526. fellow

  527. brothers,

  528. fellow

  529. servants,

  530. fellow

  531. soldiers

  532. in the

  533. Lord.

  534. We have

  535. much to

  536. be thankful

  537. for in

  538. that sense.

  539. So we

  540. have the

  541. servant's

  542. heart.

  543. The second

  544. thing we

  545. see here

  546. is the

  547. servant's

  548. burden.

  549. burden.

  550. We see

  551. the

  552. servant's

  553. burden.

  554. Why was

  555. Paul feeling

  556. it so

  557. necessary to

  558. send

  559. Epaphroditus

  560. back?

  561. Well,

  562. when we

  563. read on

  564. in verse

  565. 25,

  566. well,

  567. he was a

  568. fellow worker

  569. and a

  570. fellow soldier,

  571. your messenger

  572. and minister

  573. to my

  574. need.

  575. They had

  576. sent him.

  577. But it

  578. says in

  579. verse 26,

  580. he has

  581. been longing

  582. for you

  583. all and

  584. has been

  585. distressed

  586. because you

  587. heard that

  588. he was

  589. ill.

  590. And you

  591. see here

  592. the burden

  593. that Epaphroditus

  594. had.

  595. His burden

  596. was towards

  597. his people.

  598. It wasn't

  599. about

  600. himself.

  601. It wasn't

  602. looking very

  603. selfishly at

  604. himself.

  605. He was

  606. distressed

  607. because of

  608. others.

  609. And what

  610. we find

  611. is the

  612. servant's

  613. burden,

  614. as we

  615. believe in

  616. the Lord

  617. Jesus,

  618. there is a

  619. burden that

  620. grows in

  621. us.

  622. When we

  623. think of

  624. fellow workers

  625. and fellow

  626. soldiers,

  627. as Paul has

  628. described there,

  629. it reminds us

  630. that we are

  631. always learning

  632. in this

  633. life.

  634. That through

  635. all our

  636. different

  637. experiences,

  638. we are

  639. learning.

  640. Soldiers

  641. go through

  642. boot camp.

  643. They go

  644. through

  645. training so

  646. that they

  647. can endure

  648. hardships when

  649. they go

  650. into the

  651. battlefield.

  652. It's

  653. something they

  654. have to

  655. go through.

  656. And that's

  657. what Paul

  658. is saying

  659. here as

  660. well.

  661. When he

  662. speaks of

  663. it in

  664. verse 22,

  665. he speaks

  666. of Timothy,

  667. but you

  668. know,

  669. Timothy's

  670. proven

  671. worth.

  672. That

  673. proven

  674. worth means

  675. approved

  676. by testing.

  677. He has

  678. gone through

  679. his own

  680. trials.

  681. And you

  682. see it here

  683. with

  684. Epaphroditus.

  685. He has

  686. been

  687. ill.

  688. Indeed,

  689. it says

  690. in verse

  691. 27,

  692. indeed,

  693. he was

  694. ill near

  695. to death.

  696. He has

  697. gone through

  698. this trial,

  699. this experience.

  700. experience.

  701. But what

  702. has it

  703. taught him?

  704. It's

  705. taught him

  706. to focus

  707. on others.

  708. And how

  709. many experiences

  710. have you

  711. gone through

  712. without

  713. understanding

  714. at the

  715. time,

  716. what is

  717. it about?

  718. Why is

  719. this

  720. happening?

  721. But then

  722. later on,

  723. you're able

  724. to help

  725. others who

  726. go through

  727. that very

  728. similar

  729. experience

  730. themselves.

  731. And that's

  732. what being

  733. fellow

  734. Christians

  735. together

  736. does.

  737. That's

  738. what a

  739. community

  740. of

  741. believers

  742. does.

  743. How

  744. quietly

  745. and how

  746. subtly

  747. things go

  748. on in

  749. the

  750. background.

  751. How

  752. many

  753. unsung

  754. heroes

  755. are here

  756. who will

  757. just go

  758. and visit

  759. someone

  760. because

  761. they've

  762. had a

  763. similar

  764. experience,

  765. whether

  766. it's

  767. grief

  768. or

  769. illness

  770. or

  771. whatever

  772. experience

  773. people are

  774. going

  775. through.

  776. They can

  777. come

  778. alongside.

  779. and be

  780. brothers and

  781. sisters

  782. alongside

  783. each other

  784. because they

  785. can say,

  786. I know

  787. what you're

  788. going through.

  789. I have

  790. been there.

  791. And that

  792. we are

  793. growing

  794. together

  795. in that

  796. way.

  797. And here

  798. we see

  799. Epaphroditus.

  800. He was

  801. distressed,

  802. it says,

  803. because you

  804. heard that

  805. he was

  806. ill.

  807. And it's

  808. interesting

  809. that that

  810. word

  811. distressed

  812. is only

  813. used

  814. here

  815. and when

  816. Jesus

  817. is in

  818. the

  819. garden

  820. of

  821. Gethsemane.

  822. The

  823. same

  824. word

  825. there

  826. is

  827. used

  828. distressed

  829. as it

  830. is in

  831. Matthew

    Matthew 26:37

  832. 26

  833. verse

  834. 37

  835. and

  836. 38

  837. where

  838. he

  839. says

  840. Jesus

  841. was

  842. sorrowful

  843. and

  844. troubled.

  845. Troubled

  846. is that

  847. same

  848. word

  849. distressed.

  850. And

  851. what is

  852. that word

  853. meaning?

  854. Well

  855. it's

  856. meaning

  857. that

  858. there

  859. is

  860. a

  861. distress

  862. a

  863. trouble

  864. feeling

  865. troubled

  866. because

  867. of the

  868. burden

  869. for

  870. others.

  871. The

  872. burden

  873. of the

  874. Lord

  875. Jesus

  876. as he

  877. was in

  878. Gethsemane

  879. was as he

  880. was saying

  881. to his

  882. father

  883. not my

  884. will

  885. but yours

  886. be done.

  887. What was

  888. the burden?

  889. It was the

  890. burden

  891. of the

  892. salvation

  893. of the

  894. world.

  895. The

  896. redemption

  897. of his

  898. people

  899. by going

  900. to the

  901. cross.

  902. What a

  903. powerful

  904. way he

  905. was

  906. troubled.

  907. And it's

  908. saying here

  909. of Epaphroditus

  910. he was

  911. distressed

  912. because you

  913. heard he

  914. was ill.

  915. It doesn't

  916. seem to

  917. compare

  918. but it

  919. still says

  920. that there

  921. is a

  922. burden

  923. towards

  924. the

  925. people.

  926. A

  927. genuine

  928. concern.

  929. His

  930. focus,

  931. his

  932. concern

  933. was on

  934. others.

  935. And it's

  936. a wonderful

  937. privilege when

  938. we have

  939. people with

  940. that kind

  941. of mindset

  942. as well.

  943. One

  944. commentator

  945. was speaking

  946. about this

  947. in a

  948. situation

  949. where the

  950. church

  951. didn't have

  952. this kind

  953. of nature,

  954. didn't have

  955. this kind

  956. of attitude.

  957. And he

  958. said this,

  959. what a

  960. lesson for

  961. the church.

  962. How many

  963. of us can

  964. see no

  965. further than

  966. the end

  967. of our

  968. own noses?

  969. We are

  970. so caught

  971. up in

  972. what is

  973. happening

  974. to us

  975. that we

  976. are unable

  977. to see

  978. the needs

  979. of those

  980. around us.

  981. That's

  982. not how

  983. the church

  984. should be.

  985. It's not

  986. just looking

  987. to ourselves.

  988. It's not

  989. just thinking

  990. about ourselves

  991. but it's

  992. a burden

  993. for others.

  994. And the

  995. blessing that

  996. we have

  997. here is

  998. that there

  999. is that

  1000. collective

  1001. burden

  1002. for others

  1003. in our

  1004. midst,

  1005. of looking

  1006. out for,

  1007. of sharing

  1008. with one

  1009. another.

  1010. And in

  1011. many ways

  1012. that is a

  1013. sign of

  1014. maturing in

  1015. our faith

  1016. and in

  1017. our understanding.

  1018. It's a

  1019. sign of

  1020. maturing in

  1021. our knowledge

  1022. of God

  1023. and his

  1024. cause,

  1025. of what

  1026. Christ has

  1027. done for

  1028. us.

  1029. When you

  1030. see it

  1031. here in

  1032. the beginning

  1033. of chapter

  1034. 2,

  1035. maybe

  1036. especially

  1037. verse 4,

  1038. let each

  1039. of you

  1040. look not

  1041. only to

  1042. his own

  1043. interests

  1044. but also

  1045. to the

  1046. interests

  1047. of others.

  1048. And then

  1049. it goes

  1050. on to

  1051. speak of

  1052. have this

  1053. mind

  1054. among

  1055. yourselves

  1056. which is

  1057. yours

  1058. in Christ

  1059. Jesus

  1060. who thought

  1061. he was,

  1062. who though

  1063. he was in

  1064. the form

  1065. of God

  1066. did not

  1067. count

  1068. equality

  1069. with God

  1070. a thing

  1071. to be

  1072. grasped

  1073. but made

  1074. himself

  1075. nothing

  1076. taking the

  1077. form

  1078. of a

  1079. servant.

  1080. There is

  1081. our example

  1082. of humility

  1083. of being

  1084. concerned

  1085. for others.

  1086. It comes

  1087. from knowing

  1088. Christ

  1089. knowing

  1090. our King

  1091. more

  1092. and more

  1093. and so

  1094. do we have

  1095. that

  1096. servant's

  1097. burden?

  1098. we do

  1099. but let's

  1100. keep

  1101. cultivating

  1102. that

  1103. burden

  1104. so it

  1105. doesn't

  1106. just stay

  1107. within

  1108. these

  1109. walls

  1110. but it

  1111. goes out

  1112. beyond

  1113. these

  1114. walls.

  1115. It reaches

  1116. out to

  1117. our

  1118. community

  1119. all around

  1120. us

  1121. to those

  1122. who are

  1123. burdened

  1124. and troubled

  1125. in so

  1126. many different

  1127. ways around

  1128. us

  1129. that we

  1130. would have

  1131. that

  1132. burden

  1133. for them.

  1134. And you

  1135. notice

  1136. Epaphroditus

  1137. how he's

  1138. mentioned

  1139. towards the

  1140. end here

  1141. because

  1142. of the

  1143. burden

  1144. that he

  1145. had for

  1146. others.

  1147. Look at

  1148. how others

  1149. looked

  1150. to him.

  1151. In

  1152. verse 28

  1153. and 29

  1154. what does

  1155. it say?

  1156. I am

  1157. more eager

  1158. to send

  1159. him

  1160. therefore

  1161. that you

  1162. may rejoice

  1163. at seeing

  1164. him again

  1165. and that I

  1166. may be less

  1167. anxious.

  1168. So receive

  1169. him in the

  1170. Lord with

  1171. all joy

  1172. and honour

  1173. such men.

  1174. He sees

  1175. here that

  1176. here is

  1177. one

  1178. who is

  1179. a great

  1180. example

  1181. of

  1182. humility.

  1183. A

  1184. great

  1185. example

  1186. of what

  1187. a servant

  1188. and a

  1189. brother

  1190. in the

  1191. Lord

  1192. looks like.

  1193. And there

  1194. is such

  1195. encouragement

  1196. in him

  1197. coming back

  1198. that he

  1199. would be

  1200. well

  1201. received

  1202. because he

  1203. had that

  1204. burden

  1205. for his

  1206. people.

  1207. And if we

  1208. have that

  1209. burden

  1210. for one

  1211. another

  1212. what does

  1213. it do?

  1214. it means

  1215. that we

  1216. are encouraged

  1217. when we

  1218. are in

  1219. each

  1220. other's

  1221. company.

  1222. It means

  1223. we are

  1224. encouraged

  1225. when we

  1226. are together

  1227. in the

  1228. things of

  1229. the Lord.

  1230. Whatever

  1231. service

  1232. we are

  1233. given,

  1234. whatever

  1235. little

  1236. things we

  1237. might be

  1238. doing for

  1239. the Lord

  1240. here.

  1241. There is

  1242. so much

  1243. that goes

  1244. on with

  1245. our young

  1246. people,

  1247. with our

  1248. old

  1249. people,

  1250. with the

  1251. doors being

  1252. opened

  1253. throughout

  1254. the week

  1255. for different

  1256. people to

  1257. come and

  1258. go and

  1259. everyone is

  1260. playing their

  1261. part.

  1262. Everyone

  1263. has

  1264. something

  1265. to do

  1266. and that

  1267. we are

  1268. in that

  1269. sense of

  1270. being

  1271. together

  1272. in it,

  1273. we are

  1274. having that

  1275. joy and

  1276. that being

  1277. together in

  1278. it,

  1279. we are

  1280. encouraging

  1281. one another.

  1282. And so let

  1283. us keep

  1284. doing so.

  1285. The unsung

  1286. heroes,

  1287. they don't

  1288. want to be

  1289. to the

  1290. fore,

  1291. but we

  1292. just get

  1293. on with

  1294. it because

  1295. of our

  1296. love for

  1297. Christ and

  1298. our love

  1299. for one

  1300. another.

  1301. So we

  1302. have that

  1303. servant's

  1304. burden that

  1305. we see

  1306. in Epaphroditus

  1307. and Timothy

  1308. and Paul

  1309. as well.

  1310. The final

  1311. thing we

  1312. want to

  1313. see here

  1314. is the

  1315. servant's

  1316. honour.

  1317. Why do

  1318. they do

  1319. what they

  1320. do?

  1321. Why does

  1322. Paul travel

  1323. around so

  1324. many different

  1325. places?

  1326. Why does

  1327. Timothy seek

  1328. to learn

  1329. from him?

  1330. Why is

  1331. Epaphroditus

  1332. just quietly

  1333. going about

  1334. his business?

  1335. it's for

  1336. the glory

  1337. of God.

  1338. We don't

  1339. do it

  1340. for honour,

  1341. but we

  1342. know too

  1343. that the

  1344. Lord will

  1345. honour

  1346. those who

  1347. honour

  1348. him.

  1349. It says

  1350. that in

  1351. 1 Samuel

    1 Samuel 2:30

  1352. chapter 2

  1353. verse 30,

  1354. those who

  1355. honour me

  1356. I will

  1357. honour.

  1358. And it

  1359. tells us

  1360. Timothy 4

  1361. verse 8

  1362. he reward

  1363. every faithful

  1364. servant with

  1365. a crown

  1366. of righteousness.

  1367. righteousness.

  1368. We're not

  1369. doing it

  1370. for these

  1371. things,

  1372. but we

  1373. are encouraged

  1374. to know

  1375. that we

  1376. are doing

  1377. it for

  1378. the Lord

  1379. and at

  1380. the end

  1381. of the

  1382. day

  1383. it will

  1384. all be

  1385. worth it.

  1386. Any

  1387. hardship

  1388. we suffer

  1389. now serving

  1390. Christ,

  1391. any challenges

  1392. we come up

  1393. against,

  1394. any disappointments

  1395. that come

  1396. our way,

  1397. we can

  1398. keep on.

  1399. We keep

  1400. on going

  1401. because the

  1402. Lord is

  1403. with us.

  1404. The

  1405. Lord is

  1406. on our

  1407. side.

  1408. And

  1409. whatever we

  1410. do for

  1411. the Lord

  1412. it will

  1413. be worth

  1414. it in

  1415. the end

  1416. because the

  1417. Lord is

  1418. able to

  1419. bless.

  1420. Paul

  1421. here he

  1422. kind of

  1423. honours

  1424. Epaphroditus

  1425. at the end

  1426. of verse

  1427. 29 when

  1428. he says

  1429. of him

  1430. honour

  1431. such

  1432. men.

  1433. give

  1434. them

  1435. their

  1436. place,

  1437. give

  1438. them

  1439. their

  1440. encouragement

  1441. and

  1442. every

  1443. one of

  1444. you

  1445. be

  1446. encouraged

  1447. this

  1448. evening

  1449. as you

  1450. go on

  1451. doing

  1452. for the

  1453. Lord,

  1454. praying

  1455. to the

  1456. Lord,

  1457. serving

  1458. the

  1459. Lord,

  1460. encouraging

  1461. in the

  1462. name of

  1463. the

  1464. Lord,

  1465. be

  1466. encouraged

  1467. yourselves

  1468. and

  1469. encourage

  1470. one

  1471. another.

  1472. we

  1473. don't

  1474. do it

  1475. out of

  1476. selfishness

  1477. or

  1478. empty

  1479. conceit

  1480. but

  1481. going back

  1482. to the

  1483. beginning

  1484. of this

  1485. chapter

  1486. do

  1487. nothing

  1488. at a

  1489. rivalry

  1490. or conceit

  1491. but in

  1492. humility

  1493. do all

  1494. things

  1495. looking

  1496. to the

  1497. Lord

  1498. Jesus.

  1499. He

  1500. is

  1501. king

  1502. and

  1503. if he

  1504. is

  1505. our

  1506. king

  1507. we

  1508. are

  1509. to

  1510. serve

  1511. him

  1512. and

  1513. if we

  1514. are

  1515. serving

  1516. him

  1517. we

  1518. can

  1519. be

  1520. thankful

  1521. that

  1522. we

  1523. seek

  1524. to

  1525. do

  1526. that

  1527. together

  1528. with

  1529. that

  1530. same

  1531. servant

  1532. heart

  1533. together

  1534. with

  1535. that

  1536. same

  1537. servant

  1538. burden

  1539. together

  1540. looking

  1541. to that

  1542. same

  1543. servant

  1544. honour

  1545. together

  1546. rejoice

  1547. give

  1548. thanks

  1549. for all

  1550. that's

  1551. going

  1552. on

  1553. in

  1554. the

  1555. name

  1556. of

  1557. the

  1558. Lord

  1559. learn

  1560. more

  1561. of

  1562. him

  1563. know

  1564. him

  1565. as

  1566. he

  1567. is

  1568. so

  1569. that

  1570. we

  1571. can

  1572. honour

  1573. him

  1574. with

  1575. all

  1576. that

  1577. we

  1578. are

  1579. let

  1580. us

  1581. pray

  1582. Lord

  1583. our

  1584. gracious

  1585. God

  1586. we

  1587. pray

  1588. that

  1589. you

  1590. will

  1591. unite

  1592. our

  1593. hearts

  1594. in

  1595. that

  1596. way

  1597. of

  1598. being

  1599. servants

  1600. fellow

  1601. servants

  1602. for

  1603. you

  1604. fellow

  1605. workers

  1606. fellow

  1607. soldiers

  1608. in

  1609. this

  1610. work

  1611. of

  1612. the

  1613. gospel

  1614. that

  1615. we

  1616. are

  1617. involved

  1618. in

  1619. we

  1620. thank

  1621. you

  1622. for

  1623. all

  1624. the

  1625. blessings

  1626. that

  1627. you

  1628. give

  1629. to

  1630. us

  1631. we

  1632. thank

  1633. you

  1634. for

  1635. every

  1636. example

  1637. that

  1638. we

  1639. have

  1640. from

  1641. your

  1642. word

  1643. but

  1644. also

  1645. the

  1646. examples

  1647. and

  1648. encouragers

  1649. we

  1650. have

  1651. around

  1652. us

  1653. day

  1654. by

  1655. day

  1656. and

  1657. we

  1658. pray

  1659. Lord

  1660. that

  1661. together

  1662. we

  1663. will

  1664. know

  1665. your

  1666. hand

  1667. of

  1668. blessing

  1669. upon

  1670. us

  1671. that

  1672. we

  1673. would

  1674. know

  1675. your

  1676. strength

  1677. with

  1678. us

  1679. in

  1680. all

  1681. that

  1682. we

  1683. seek

  1684. to

  1685. do

  1686. and

  1687. that

  1688. we

  1689. would

  1690. see

  1691. the

  1692. blessing

  1693. of

  1694. the

  1695. Lord

  1696. in

  1697. our

  1698. midst

  1699. that

  1700. we

  1701. would

  1702. see

  1703. the

  1704. name

  1705. of

  1706. Jesus

  1707. lifted

  1708. high

  1709. and

  1710. praised

  1711. near

  1712. and far

  1713. as

  1714. we

  1715. ask

  1716. all

  1717. in

  1718. his

  1719. precious

  1720. name

  1721. Amen

  1722. We're

  1723. going to

  1724. conclude

  1725. by

  1726. singing

  1727. to

  1728. God's

  1729. praise

  1730. again

  1731. in

  1732. Psalm

  1733. 30

  1734. in

  1735. the

  1736. Sing

  1737. Psalms

  1738. Psalm

  1739. 30

  1740. in

  1741. the

  1742. Sing

  1743. Psalms

  1744. page

  1745. 35

  1746. we'll

  1747. sing

  1748. from

  1749. verse

  1750. 9

  1751. down

  1752. to

  1753. the

  1754. end

  1755. what

  1756. gain

  1757. will

  1758. my

  1759. destruction

  1760. bring

  1761. if I

  1762. descend

  1763. to

  1764. death

  1765. will

  1766. thus

  1767. proclaim

  1768. your

  1769. faithfulness

  1770. or

  1771. praise

  1772. you

  1773. with

  1774. its

  1775. breath

  1776. hear

  1777. as

  1778. I

  1779. cry

  1780. O

  1781. Lord

  1782. my

  1783. God

  1784. and

  1785. listen

  1786. to

  1787. my

  1788. plea

  1789. come

  1790. to

  1791. my

  1792. aid

  1793. and

  1794. my

  1795. distress

  1796. have

  1797. mercy

  1798. Lord

  1799. on

  1800. me

  1801. we'll

  1802. sing

  1803. from

  1804. verse

  1805. 9

  1806. down

  1807. to

  1808. the

  1809. end

  1810. of

  1811. the

  1812. Psalm

  1813. to

  1814. God's

  1815. praise

  1816. !

  1817. to

  1818. God

  1819. God

  1820. him

  1821. will

  1822. hide

  1823. his

  1824. passion

  1825. bring

  1826. If I

  1827. descend

  1828. to

  1829. death

  1830. will

  1831. trust

  1832. you

  1833. your

  1834. faithfulness

1835. or praise you with his bread.

1836. Hear us, I cry, O Lord my God,

1837. and listen to my plea.

1838. Come to my end in my distress,

1839. have mercy, Lord, on me.

1840. Turn my willy into dance,

1841. no longer was I sad.

  1842. My sad cloth, God,

1843. you gave me those of joy,

  1844. and I was glad.

1845. Therefore my heart will sing to you,

1846. and never cease to praise.

1847. To you it may, O Lord my God,

1848. I will lift and always sing.

1849. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my right.

1850. We'll close with the benediction.

1851. Now may grace, mercy, and peace from God,

1852. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

1853. rest upon and abide with you all,

  1854. now and forevermore.

  1855. Amen.

  1856. Thank you, Father,

  1857. Thank you.
