  1. If we can turn back to our reading in Isaiah chapter 28. I'm reading at the beginning of this section at verse 14.

    Isaiah 28 chapter mention

  2. ! Isaiah 28 at verse 14, where we read,

  3. Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.

  4. Because you have said, we have made a covenant with death and with Sheol, we have an agreement.

  5. When the overwhelming whip passes through, it will not come to us.

  6. We have made lies, our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter.

  7. Therefore, thus says the Lord God,

  8. Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation.

  9. Whoever believes will not be in haste.

  10. You see a great contrast in these two verses.

  11. You hear the word of the people in the day.

  12. We have made a covenant with death, they say.

  13. We have everything in our hands.

  14. We have this protection over ourselves.

  15. And we will find refuge in our lies.

  16. And then you see the contrast of that with what the Lord is saying in verse 16.

  17. Thus says the Lord God,

  18. Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone.

  19. And really the contrast there is before us in where are the people finding their refuge?

  20. One, the people are making a refuge in their lies.

  21. And the other one is God calling the people to make their refuge with him.

  22. And in the security of the precious cornerstone that has a sure foundation.

  23. A few weeks ago at the beginning of this month, we had a communion weekend where we came together and remembered the Lord's death together.

  24. And we took part or many of us took part in the Lord's Supper.

  25. Many watched on perhaps as the Lord's Supper was dispensed.

  26. And part of coming to the Lord's Supper, to the Lord's Table, is when we are challenged to ask ourselves, where are we with the Lord?

  27. We call it examining ourselves.

  28. And every one of us should do that as we come to the Lord's Table.

  29. But it should never be the only time we do it.

  30. Maybe it's highlighted at that time in a way where we think, well, can I go to the Lord's Table?

  31. And there's maybe a sense of that overwhelming feeling, I can't.

  32. I'm not worthy.

  33. But even as we come away from the Lord's Table, as we go on, maybe looking ahead to the next one,

  34. do we wait until the next one comes round in August before we ask ourselves, am I worthy of sitting at the Lord's Table?

  35. Am I any better than I was the last time when I didn't?

  36. Or even if I did sit there, maybe I'm feeling more unworthy now than I was then.

  37. We're examining ourselves all the time.

  38. It's not just at one point as we approach the Lord's Supper.

  39. We should be examining ourselves on a daily basis.

  40. And examining ourselves in the light of God's Word.

  41. In looking to this morning and the service we heard this morning,

  42. did you go home and examine yourself in light of what you heard?

  43. Did you take it in?

  44. Did you ponder it?

  45. Did you think about it?

  46. Well, think about who is my example?

  47. Who am I looking to?

  48. Who am I seeking to follow?

  49. Who are the good people around me that I can learn from?

  50. Who can I encourage?

  51. How can I keep going?

  52. Did you examine yourself under all of these things that Gordon was preaching to us this morning under the heading of grace?

  53. Or even as we come this evening, do you come here to hear the Word of God?

  54. In the sense of, I'm going to go away and think about what I'm hearing.

  55. Think about what is being put before me again.

  56. And examine myself in light of this Word.

  57. And ask myself, where am I finding my refuge?

  58. Is it in the lies of this world?

  59. Or is it in this cornerstone, this precious stone that God shows to us as the person of Jesus Christ?

  60. As we look at Isaiah chapter 28 here, we find a people who are examining themselves.

    Isaiah 28 chapter mention

  61. And they're examining themselves in light of everything that's going on around them.

  62. And they're basically coming to the conclusion, as we so often see in Scripture, that, well, we can go on without God.

  63. We don't need God.

  64. We're going to make refuge, lies, a refuge.

  65. We're going to make falsehood the place where we take shelter.

  66. And it sounds absurd to us.

  67. And so it did to God in his day as well, because he comes and speaks to them in a very different way.

  68. And he assures them that there they will find no hope.

  69. And yet, when we see everything that's going on around us, and we think of the days of Isaiah,

  70. when the people were examining themselves in light of the standards of others around them,

  71. and thinking, we're going to go this way.

  72. We're going to do this.

  73. And we don't need God's help in the midst of this.

  74. We can decide ourselves.

  75. We look at our own nation.

  76. We look at the world in which we're living today, and we see the exact same ideas going on.

  77. We'll find refuge in our lies.

  78. We'll make falsehood the place where we take shelter.

  79. And we'll call it wisdom.

  80. We'll call it progress.

  81. We'll call it we're getting on fine, and we'll put God out of the equation.

  82. But just as it was in the days of Isaiah, when God was warning of the seriousness of judgment that was upon the people,

  83. if they continued in this manner, so it is for ourselves today.

  84. Things are not at a distance from us this evening, where we think, well, it's not really impacting me,

  85. what our nation has decided, whether it's to do with infants,

  86. or whether it's to do with when we come to that point of dying in our lives, and who is in control.

  87. Or when we think of the wars and the rumors of wars that are going on around us, it's not at a distance.

  88. God is speaking.

  89. And God is speaking, not just to a few people in a few places.

  90. He is speaking to every one of us.

  91. Here and throughout the world, God is speaking to us.

  92. And he's showing us the kind of judgment that he can bring upon a people of this world.

  93. And none of us know how far that judgment might go.

  94. Often we get asked the question these days, do you think this is the end times?

  95. So many people have that in the back of their minds.

  96. Is this it?

  97. We don't know.

  98. We don't know because the word of God doesn't tell us exactly when it will come.

  99. But it does give us instruction as to the kind of things that we're going to see before it does come.

  100. We're going to see the wickedness of man in so many different ways.

  101. The evil being poured out in our world.

  102. Much of it done in the name of progress and wisdom.

  103. But God is warning us.

  104. God is warning us that yes, we are in the last days.

  105. We don't know when the Lord will return.

  106. We don't know how far things will go.

  107. But we know that we are living in the last days.

  108. And the Lord is going to come.

  109. And when he comes, he will judge his people.

  110. And when we think of everything that's going on around us today,

  111. does it give us a sense of urgency?

  112. Does it make you ask this evening,

  113. where am I finding my refuge?

  114. Where am I looking in this world in which I'm living,

  115. in the life that I am living,

  116. where am I finding my hope?

  117. Where am I finding what will give me hope?

  118. Not just for just now, but for eternity.

  119. We are being warned.

  120. The Lord is speaking.

  121. And he is showing us a sense of his judgment upon us.

  122. But are we listening?

  123. Or are we like the people here in Isaiah who will say,

  124. no, we'll carry on and make lies our refuge.

  125. The fool, as we sang in Psalm 14,

  126. the fool says in his heart,

  127. there is no God.

  128. And it is foolish to think that tonight,

  129. that there is no God.

  130. But it's also foolish to know there is a God

  131. and not to take refuge in him.

  132. To say I'm not good enough to come to him.

  133. To say I'm too much of a sinner to come to him.

  134. That is foolishness.

  135. Because we need him.

  136. We can make different kinds of lies our refuge.

  137. The lies of the world, but also the lies in our own heart.

  138. That God would have nothing to do with me.

  139. Or that I do not need God.

  140. We are fools to think that.

  141. Instead, we should see what God is saying and saying to us here in verse 16,

  142. behold, I am the one who has laid us a foundation in Zion,

  143. a stone, a tested stone,

  144. a precious cornerstone of sure foundation.

  145. There is this stone.

  146. And what he's speaking about here is not just a physical stone,

  147. as we would think,

  148. but he is speaking about the Lord Jesus

  149. as the cornerstone, the precious stone.

  150. And it says at the end of this verse in 16,

  151. whoever believes will not be in haste,

  152. will not be in panic,

  153. but instead will have a calm and a peace

  154. because we know our refuge in Christ.

  155. So the difference is there for us to see.

  156. And this passage reminds us of what we have in Christ.

  157. And as we examine ourselves under God's word tonight

  158. to ask ourselves,

  159. how are we with God this evening?

  160. Are we finding our refuge in him?

  161. Is he the precious cornerstone of my life

  162. in which I am taking refuge?

  163. We look at ourselves and we panic.

  164. We look at ourselves and we feel fear.

  165. But what are we to do?

  166. We are to do as Robert Murray McShane once said.

  167. He was a minister in Dundee,

  168. died at a young age in his twenties.

  169. But he once said this,

  170. for every look at yourself,

  171. take ten looks at Christ.

  172. For he is altogether lovely,

  173. such infinite majesty,

  174. and yet such meekness and grace,

  175. and all for sinners,

  176. even the chief of sinners.

  177. For every look at yourself,

  178. take ten looks to Christ.

  179. And so as we look at God's word this evening,

  180. let's not just look at ourselves.

  181. But let's look at this precious cornerstone

  182. that is Jesus Christ our Lord.

  183. And there see where we can find

  184. a place of refuge,

  185. a place of calm.

  186. But the first thing we want to see

  187. about this stone as we look at it this evening,

  188. the stone that is Christ,

  189. is the first thing we think about is

  190. the stone that is rejected,

  191. that we sang of in Psalm 118.

  192. The psalmist there is closely tied in

  193. with what Isaiah is saying about the cornerstone.

  194. In verse 22 of Psalm 118,

  195. the stone the builders had refused,

  196. had rejected,

  197. it has become the cornerstone.

  198. But you see,

  199. first of all,

  200. it was rejected by many.

  201. And this chapter,

  202. chapter 28 of Isaiah,

  203. is really showing the judgment

  204. that is coming upon the people.

  205. It's right throughout the first half of

  206. Isaiah up to chapter 40.

  207. You see the judgment

  208. that is about to come.

  209. Then from chapter 40 onwards,

  210. you see the Lord then calling

  211. his people back to himself

  212. in the midst of judgment.

  213. But here it is still to come.

  214. There is the warning.

  215. In many ways,

  216. that's where we are tonight as well.

  217. We are under the warning

  218. of the judgment of God.

  219. And in verse 14,

  220. as we come in this chapter,

  221. it says,

  222. therefore,

  223. and so it's showing,

  224. it's important

  225. what has just been said

  226. in the beginning of the chapter.

  227. Under this judgment

  228. that you are under,

  229. therefore it says,

  230. hear the word of the Lord.

  231. Hear what the Lord is saying.

  232. And what you find is,

  233. what's happened is,

  234. the people are rejecting God.

  235. They are turning away from God.

  236. And it's happened in Isaiah's day

  237. among the religious leaders

  238. as well as the political leaders.

  239. They've all turned away from God.

  240. And the rot has set in.

  241. And that is what we see

  242. to this very day.

  243. God is judging this nation

  244. because the people,

  245. the leaders,

  246. have turned away from God.

  247. At the time of national crisis

  248. in the midst of the people

  249. in Isaiah's day,

  250. a time when the nation

  251. was coming under threat,

  252. the people,

  253. instead of turning to God,

  254. turned away from him.

  255. And you see,

  256. in verse 14,

  257. it says,

  258. hear the word of the Lord,

  259. you scoffers.

  260. You scoffers there

  261. mean that this is

  262. a repeated practice.

  263. It's not just a one-off.

  264. But the people are doing it

  265. again and again and again.

  266. Every decision that they're making,

  267. every direction they're turning,

  268. it's all going away from God

  269. again and again and again.

  270. And you see it in verse 15.

  271. It's their own wisdom.

  272. It says there,

  273. because you have said.

  274. They are making all

  275. their own decisions,

  276. using their own wisdom.

  277. Instead of listening

  278. to what the Lord is saying,

  279. they're listening to themselves.

  280. And where do they end up?

  281. They end up,

  282. we have made a covenant

  283. with death.

  284. death.

  285. This is the way

  286. that we are going.

  287. And does it not

  288. speak into our situation

  289. today?

  290. This is the way

  291. that we are going.

  292. This is the direction

  293. we are choosing to turn

  294. in our own wisdom.

  295. We will take all these matters

  296. of life and death

  297. into our own hands.

  298. And where does it lead us?

  299. To find refuge

  300. in lies.

  301. To find shelter

  302. in falsehood.

  303. And there is hope

  304. in any of these things

  305. is foolishness.

  306. It's like we read of

  307. in Matthew,

  308. or Jesus preaches

  309. in Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  310. the wise and the foolish

  311. builder.

  312. The Lord is saying here

  313. in Isaiah 28,

  314. hear the word of the Lord.

  315. Listen,

  316. but they don't.

  317. And so what is the outcome?

  318. The same as it would be

  319. in Matthew 7.

  320. Everyone who hears

  321. these words of mine

  322. and does not do them

  323. will be like a foolish man

  324. who built his house

  325. on the sand.

  326. And the rain fell

  327. and the floods came

  328. and the winds blew

  329. and beat against the house

  330. and it fell

  331. and great

  332. was the fall

  333. of it.

  334. There is the outcome

  335. of this wisdom.

  336. It's foolishness.

  337. Foolishness.

  338. It's foolishness.

  339. To go on listening

  340. to our own wisdom

  341. is foolishness.

  342. To go on

  343. in the direction

  344. that we are going

  345. rejecting God,

  346. it is foolishness

  347. and there will be

  348. a great destruction.

  349. The Lord

  350. is being rejected.

  351. Isaiah 53,

    Isaiah 53:3

  352. verse 3,

  353. he speaks,

  354. we've looked at it recently,

  355. he's despised

  356. and rejected by men,

  357. a man of sorrows

  358. and acquainted with grief.

  359. Again,

  360. speaking about

  361. the Lord Jesus.

  362. In John,

    John 1:10

  363. chapter 1,

  364. verse 10,

  365. he was in the world

  366. and the world

  367. was made through him

  368. yet the world

  369. did not know him.

  370. He came to his own

  371. and his own people

  372. did not receive him.

  373. He was rejected.

  374. rejected.

  375. The cornerstone

  376. of Psalm 118,

  377. rejected.

  378. And so it asks

  379. ourselves this evening,

  380. what are we doing

  381. with this cornerstone?

  382. What are we doing

  383. with Jesus?

  384. As you look at yourself,

  385. as you examine yourself,

  386. are you rejecting him again?

  387. Are you making lies

  388. your refuge?

  389. Are you making falsehood

  390. your shelter?

  391. Are you rejecting

  392. the Lord Jesus Christ?

  393. Instead of looking at him,

  394. we're looking to ourselves.

  395. We'll go back to

  396. Robert Murray McShane's quote

  397. when he said,

  398. for every look at you,

  399. take it yourself,

  400. take ten looks at Christ.

  401. He went on to say this,

  402. let your soul be filled

  403. with heart ravishing sense

  404. of the sweetness

  405. and excellency of Christ

  406. and all that is in him.

  407. Let the Holy Spirit

  408. fill every chamber

  409. of your heart

  410. and so there will be

  411. no room for folly

  412. or the world

  413. or Satan

  414. or the flesh.

  415. By rejecting Jesus,

  416. we are making room

  417. for folly,

  418. the world,

  419. Satan

  420. and the flesh.

  421. And so McShane was saying,

  422. look to him.

  423. Look to him

  424. that the Spirit of God

  425. might fill

  426. every chamber

  427. of your heart.

  428. So as you examine

  429. your heart this evening,

  430. what is in there?

  431. Is it yourself

  432. or is it Christ?

  433. Somebody commenting

  434. on what McShane commented

  435. there was saying this,

  436. here is the punchline

  437. to the entire thought.

  438. The excellency of Christ

  439. is both the brilliant contrast

  440. to the sin

  441. in our hearts

  442. and the remedy

  443. to the sin

  444. we find there.

  445. the brilliant contrast

  446. to the sin

  447. in our hearts

  448. is the excellency

  449. of Christ.

  450. So as we look

  451. at our hearts

  452. and we see

  453. the sin in our hearts,

  454. we see

  455. the excellency

  456. of Christ

  457. and we see there

  458. the remedy

  459. for the sin

  460. that we find in it.

  461. So it's not about

  462. rejecting

  463. Christ.

  464. Christ.

  465. It's about

  466. receiving him,

  467. trusting him.

  468. The fool

  469. says in his heart,

  470. there is no God.

  471. So don't

  472. be foolish

  473. this evening.

  474. Well the second thing

  475. we see as we move on here

  476. is we see

  477. the grounded stone.

  478. We see the foundation

  479. of this stone.

  480. What happened

  481. to the stone

  482. that was rejected

  483. in Psalm 118?

  484. It became

  485. the cornerstone.

  486. It became

  487. that foundation

  488. to everything.

  489. And there

  490. we are reminded

  491. of Christ.

  492. He was rejected

  493. by many

  494. and yet

  495. all the time

  496. he was being made

  497. that sure foundation

  498. of our faith.

  499. And the psalmist

  500. says

  501. this is the Lord's

  502. doing.

  503. It is marvelous

  504. in our eyes.

  505. is it marvelous

  506. in your eyes

  507. this evening

  508. that you can look

  509. to Christ

  510. and see the

  511. excellency of Christ

  512. and know that Christ

  513. is the one

  514. who is able

  515. to fill your heart

  516. and find refuge

  517. in him.

  518. I say I may have

  519. been writing

  520. 700 years

  521. before

  522. the coming

  523. of the Lord

  524. Jesus Christ

  525. yet you see

  526. here

  527. Christ

  528. in verse 16

  529. behold I am

  530. the one

  531. who has laid

  532. as a foundation

  533. in Zion

  534. a stone

  535. a tested

  536. stone

  537. a precious

  538. cornerstone

  539. of a sure

  540. foundation.

  541. We see it

  542. here

  543. the cornerstone

  544. is Christ.

  545. Jesus himself

  546. when he was

  547. standing

  548. before the scribes

  549. and the Pharisees

  550. he quoted

  551. Psalm 118

  552. in Matthew

    Matthew 21:42

  553. 21

  554. verse 42

  555. he says

  556. the stone

  557. the builders

  558. reject

  559. has become

  560. the cornerstone

  561. but they

  562. couldn't see it

  563. they were rejecting

  564. him

  565. and here was

  566. the Lord

  567. that stone

  568. before them

  569. and here we

  570. have the Lord

  571. before us

  572. this evening

  573. and are we

  574. rejecting him

  575. as well?

  576. We would be

  577. foolish.

  578. Peter

  579. and Paul

  580. in the New

  581. Testament

  582. they use

  583. this verse

  584. as well

  585. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2:6

  586. chapter 2

  587. verse 6

  588. Peter says

  589. here

  590. for it

  591. stands

  592. in scripture

  593. behold

  594. I am

  595. laying

  596. in Zion

  597. a stone

  598. a cornerstone

  599. chosen

  600. and precious

  601. and whoever

  602. believes

  603. in him

  604. will not

  605. be put

  606. to shame

  607. you see

  608. he adds

  609. that

  610. believes

  611. in him

  612. the stone

  613. is Christ

  614. and so

  615. why

  616. was Jesus

  617. quoting

  618. Psalm 118

  619. why was

  620. Peter

  621. and Paul

  622. why would

  623. they both

  624. quote

  625. this verse

  626. from Isaiah

  627. to encourage

  628. a people

  629. in their

  630. faith

  631. to bring

  632. them

  633. to see

  634. their need

  635. of Christ

  636. that this

  637. stone

  638. is what

  639. they need

  640. for their

  641. salvation

  642. that's what's

  643. spelled out

  644. for us

  645. in verse

  646. 16

  647. and it

  648. uses

  649. these

  650. different

  651. phrases

  652. as laid

  653. a foundation

  654. in Zion

  655. a stone

  656. a tested

  657. stone

  658. a precious

  659. cornerstone

  660. and saying

  661. so much

  662. to us

  663. there

  664. saying so

  665. much

  666. that the

  667. people

  668. would

  669. recognize

  670. when people

  671. were building

  672. in those

  673. days

  674. there would

  675. be a

  676. substantial

  677. stone

  678. that was

  679. set

  680. in the

  681. ground

  682. on which

  683. everything

  684. else

  685. was built

  686. so there

  687. was no

  688. mistaking

  689. what God

  690. was saying

  691. the stone

  692. was required

  693. for building

  694. on and

  695. the Lord

  696. is saying

  697. here

  698. I have

  699. set

  700. this stone

  701. a tested

  702. stone

  703. a precious

  704. cornerstone

  705. and that is

  706. what he is

  707. building

  708. his church

  709. on

  710. so that even

  711. as the world

  712. is shaken

  713. as the world

  714. is rocked

  715. as even

  716. maybe at times

  717. when our faith

  718. is rocked

  719. we have

  720. this precious

  721. cornerstone

  722. it is

  723. the foundation

  724. on which

  725. everything

  726. is built

  727. we are not

  728. building

  729. on our

  730. own wisdom

  731. we are

  732. building on

  733. the wisdom

  734. of God

  735. who has

  736. given us

  737. this stone

  738. God

  739. is building

  740. his church

  741. and he is

  742. building it

  743. on the rock

  744. that is

  745. Jesus Christ

  746. I was

  747. watching a

  748. building

  749. program

  750. this last

  751. week and

  752. somebody

  753. had bought

  754. a plot

  755. of land

  756. and they

  757. wanted to

  758. build a

  759. house on

  760. it

  761. and they

  762. knew the

  763. ground

  764. wasn't the

  765. best but

  766. they didn't

  767. realise just

  768. how bad

  769. it was

  770. when they

  771. started clearing

  772. the ground

  773. you could see

  774. this digger

  775. just digging

  776. in and

  777. underneath the

  778. top layer

  779. of soil

  780. they had

  781. clay

  782. and the

  783. clay was

  784. just going

  785. down and

  786. down and

  787. down

  788. it was

  789. just seemed

  790. to be

  791. never ending

  792. and they

  793. were so

  794. amazed

  795. at the

  796. depth

  797. and it

  798. caused

  799. them

  800. panic

  801. because

  802. they realised

  803. we can't

  804. build here

  805. we've got

  806. to hit

  807. rock

  808. now the

  809. builder

  810. could easily

  811. have said

  812. well we've

  813. gone down

  814. far enough

  815. we'll just

  816. build on

  817. this clay

  818. they don't

  819. really need

  820. to know

  821. but he

  822. couldn't

  823. because he

  824. knew that

  825. very soon

  826. if they did

  827. that the

  828. building was

  829. going to

  830. start to

  831. give way

  832. it didn't

  833. have a

  834. sure

  835. foundation

  836. and when

  837. you look at

  838. the people

  839. in Isaiah's

  840. day here

  841. their foundation

  842. was very

  843. much on

  844. clay

  845. their wisdom

  846. was in the

  847. lies that

  848. they were

  849. taking refuge

  850. in and

  851. falsehood

  852. they had

  853. taken shelter

  854. so what was

  855. going to

  856. happen

  857. it's all

  858. going to

  859. come

  860. crumbling

  861. down

  862. and the

  863. wisdom of

  864. this world

  865. is just

  866. like that

  867. it's being

  868. built on

  869. a foundation

  870. that is

  871. weak

  872. and it's

  873. going to

  874. come crumbling

  875. down

  876. but the

  877. Lord didn't

  878. spare anything

  879. when he laid

  880. this foundation

  881. a very different

  882. foundation

  883. this stone

  884. the foundation

  885. stone in

  886. Zion

  887. a stone

  888. a tested

  889. stone

  890. he spared

  891. nothing

  892. he gave

  893. his son

  894. that he

  895. might give

  896. his life

  897. for his

  898. people

  899. that Jesus

  900. would be the

  901. foundation

  902. of our

  903. faith

  904. Gordon was

  905. mentioning this

  906. morning of

  907. our righteousness

  908. when our

  909. righteousness is

  910. in ourselves

  911. it's got no

  912. foundation

  913. Paul was

  914. saying there

  915. in Philippines

  916. he had all

  917. of these

  918. things he

  919. could claim

  920. as his

  921. own

  922. foundation

  923. his own

  924. righteousness

  925. but it was

  926. nothing

  927. it was

  928. rubbish

  929. compared to

  930. the surpassing

  931. worth of

  932. knowing Christ

  933. Jesus

  934. as Lord

  935. tested

  936. stone

  937. a precious

  938. stone

  939. the stone

  940. that the

  941. builders would

  942. use would be

  943. an expensive

  944. stone

  945. it would be

  946. a costly

  947. stone

  948. because it

  949. needed to

  950. be secure

  951. it needed to

  952. be right

  953. for the

  954. foundation

  955. and God

  956. did not

  957. spare

  958. anything

  959. the cost

  960. was paid

  961. in full

  962. what are we

  963. relying on

  964. our

  965. falsehood

  966. our lies

  967. or the

  968. stone

  969. that is

  970. Jesus

  971. Christ

  972. probably the

  973. young people

  974. here just

  975. now tonight

  976. but did

  977. you get any

  978. school reports

  979. in the last

  980. few weeks

  981. when you come

  982. to the end

  983. of term

  984. or maybe

  985. you're waiting

  986. for results

  987. of exams

  988. it can be a

  989. bit of an

  990. anxious time

  991. there was

  992. once a

  993. school boy

  994. brought home

  995. his school

  996. report

  997. and it

  998. had very

  999. poor

  1000. grades

  1001. he didn't

  1002. do very

  1003. well

  1004. at all

  1005. and he

  1006. gave it to

  1007. his father

  1008. his father

  1009. read it

  1010. and he

  1011. said to

  1012. him

  1013. what do

  1014. you have

  1015. to say

  1016. about this

  1017. you haven't

  1018. done well

  1019. and the wee

  1020. boy replied

  1021. well there's

  1022. one thing

  1023. dad for

  1024. sure

  1025. you can

  1026. be proud

  1027. of me

  1028. I

  1029. didn't

  1030. cheat

  1031. finding a

  1032. positive

  1033. in the

  1034. midst of

  1035. everything

  1036. else

  1037. that was

  1038. negative

  1039. when we

  1040. stand

  1041. before

  1042. God

  1043. and he

  1044. looks at

  1045. us

  1046. and we

  1047. failed

  1048. in so

  1049. many

  1050. things

  1051. what are

  1052. we going

  1053. to say

  1054. to him

  1055. all we

  1056. can do

  1057. is be

  1058. honest

  1059. and if

  1060. we're

  1061. saying

  1062. it is

  1063. not in

  1064. my

  1065. righteousness

  1066. we are

  1067. saying

  1068. I haven't

  1069. tried to

  1070. cheat

  1071. I haven't

  1072. tried to

  1073. do things

  1074. by myself

  1075. I haven't

  1076. tried to

  1077. do things

  1078. in my

  1079. own way

  1080. I haven't

  1081. been the

  1082. one who

  1083. has made

  1084. lies my

  1085. refuge

  1086. or taken

  1087. shelter in

  1088. falsehood

  1089. I haven't

  1090. done any

  1091. of these

  1092. things

  1093. Lord

  1094. from the

  1095. depths

  1096. I cried

  1097. to you

  1098. like the

  1099. psalmist

  1100. says

  1101. because that

  1102. is all

  1103. we can

  1104. do

  1105. all we

  1106. can do

  1107. is look

  1108. and see

  1109. the precious

  1110. cornerstone

  1111. that is

  1112. Jesus

  1113. Christ

  1114. to try

  1115. and do

  1116. anything

  1117. else

  1118. is cheating

  1119. we're

  1120. cheating

  1121. God

  1122. we're

  1123. making

  1124. him out

  1125. to be

  1126. a liar

  1127. we're

  1128. making

  1129. out his

  1130. word

  1131. to be

  1132. false

  1133. if we

  1134. can

  1135. say

  1136. we'll

  1137. go

  1138. by

  1139. ourselves

  1140. and

  1141. our

  1142. own

  1143. wisdom

  1144. he is

  1145. calling

  1146. us

  1147. to put

  1148. our

  1149. trust

  1150. in

  1151. him

  1152. as we

  1153. read in

  1154. John

  1155. those few

  1156. verses

  1157. in

  1158. verse

  1159. 10

  1160. where

  1161. the

  1162. people

  1163. rejected

  1164. the

  1165. Lord

  1166. it

  1167. goes

  1168. on

  1169. to

  1170. say

  1171. in

  1172. verse

  1173. 12

  1174. and

  1175. 13

  1176. but

  1177. to

  1178. all

  1179. who

  1180. did

  1181. receive

  1182. and

  1183. who

  1184. believed

  1185. in

  1186. his

  1187. name

  1188. he

  1189. gave

  1190. the

  1191. right

  1192. to

  1193. become

  1194. the

  1195. children

  1196. of

  1197. God

  1198. that is

  1199. what we

  1200. are

  1201. through

  1202. faith

  1203. through

  1204. believing

  1205. in him

  1206. through

  1207. trusting

  1208. in him

  1209. and the

  1210. stone

  1211. that he

  1212. has

  1213. given

  1214. the

  1215. Christ

  1216. that he

  1217. has

  1218. given

  1219. are

  1220. are we

  1221. listening

  1222. to

  1223. his

  1224. word

  1225. that is

  1226. the

  1227. question

  1228. and as

  1229. we

  1230. close

  1231. it's

  1232. a

  1233. question

  1234. I

  1235. want

  1236. to

  1237. put

  1238. to

  1239. you

  1240. are

  1241. you

  1242. listening

  1243. to

  1244. what

  1245. the

  1246. Lord

  1247. is

  1248. saying

  1249. are

  1250. you

  1251. examining

  1252. yourself

  1253. in the

  1254. light

  1255. of

  1256. his

  1257. word

  1258. to

  1259. us

  1260. where

  1261. there

  1262. are

  1263. two

  1264. places

  1265. we

  1266. can

  1267. take

  1268. refuge

  1269. in the

  1270. lies

  1271. of

  1272. this

  1273. world

  1274. or in

  1275. the

  1276. rock

  1277. the

  1278. cornerstone

  1279. that is

  1280. Jesus

  1281. Christ

  1282. I said

  1283. before

  1284. whoever

  1285. believes

  1286. will not

  1287. be in

  1288. haste

  1289. it means

  1290. they will

  1291. find their

  1292. calm

  1293. their

  1294. peace

  1295. in the

  1296. Lord

  1297. Jesus

  1298. Christ

  1299. Christ

  1300. is

  1301. a

  1302. living

  1303. stone

  1304. it

  1305. means

  1306. that

  1307. we

  1308. can

  1309. look

  1310. to

  1311. him

  1312. who

  1313. died

  1314. for

  1315. our

  1316. sins

  1317. who

  1318. was

  1319. raised

  1320. from

  1321. the

  1322. dead

  1323. and

  1324. who

  1325. was

  1326. triumphant

  1327. over

  1328. sin

  1329. it

  1330. is

  1331. the

  1332. stone

  1333. that

  1334. his

  1335. church

  1336. is

  1337. being

  1338. built

  1339. upon

  1340. what

  1341. is

  1342. our

  1343. vision

  1344. of

  1345. the

  1346. Lord

  1347. Jesus

  1348. do

  1349. we

  1350. see

  1351. the

  1352. excellency

  1353. of

  1354. Christ

  1355. as

  1356. we

  1357. look

  1358. to

  1359. him

  1360. look

  1361. at

  1362. yourself

  1363. once

  1364. but

  1365. look

  1366. to

  1367. Christ

  1368. ten

  1369. times

  1370. and

  1371. what

  1372. do

  1373. you

  1374. see

  1375. in

  1376. this

  1377. world

  1378. when

  1379. we

  1380. look

  1381. into

  1382. ourselves

  1383. we

  1384. feel

  1385. a

  1386. sense

  1387. of

  1388. worry

  1389. anxious

  1390. about

  1391. everything

  1392. that's

  1393. going

  1394. on

  1395. around

  1396. us

  1397. but

  1398. when

  1399. we

  1400. look

  1401. to

  1402. Christ

  1403. we

  1404. see

  1405. the

  1406. one

  1407. on

  1408. whom

  1409. the

  1410. church

  1411. is

  1412. being

  1413. built

  1414. a

  1415. church

  1416. that

  1417. is

  1418. secure

  1419. not

  1420. just

  1421. for

  1422. today

  1423. but

  1424. for

  1425. all

  1426. eternity

  1427. New

  1428. York

  1429. today

  1430. is a

  1431. huge

  1432. city

  1433. population

  1434. of

  1435. over

  1436. 8

  1437. million

  1438. people

  1439. and

  1440. it

  1441. covers

  1442. a

  1443. vast

  1444. area

  1445. but

  1446. when

  1447. people

  1448. first

  1449. came

  1450. to

  1451. New

  1452. York

  1453. as it

  1454. is

  1455. now

  1456. it

  1457. was

  1458. initially

  1459. called

  1460. New

  1461. Amsterdam

  1462. by a

  1463. Dutch

  1464. colony

  1465. and

  1466. they

  1467. set

  1468. up

  1469. their

  1470. own

  1471. colony

  1472. there

  1473. and

  1474. they

  1475. only

  1476. went

  1477. so

  1478. far

  1479. into

  1480. Manhattan

  1481. as it

  1482. is

  1483. now

  1484. and

  1485. there

  1486. they

  1487. built

  1488. a

  1489. wall

  1490. because

  1491. they

  1492. thought

  1493. that's

  1494. as

  1495. far

  1496. as

  1497. we're

  1498. going

  1499. to

  1500. go

  1501. it'll

  1502. keep

  1503. us

  1504. safe

  1505. in

  1506. our

  1507. place

  1508. and

  1509. it'll

  1510. protect

  1511. us

  1512. from

  1513. those

  1514. the

  1515. Native

  1516. Americans

  1517. and

  1518. others

  1519. who

  1520. might

  1521. come

  1522. and

  1523. if

  1524. you

  1525. know

  1526. you

  1527. New

  1528. York

  1529. today

  1530. there's

  1531. a

  1532. street

  1533. called

  1534. Wall

  1535. Street

  1536. and

  1537. that's

  1538. where

  1539. this

  1540. original

  1541. wall

  1542. was

  1543. built

  1544. and

  1545. the

  1546. name

  1547. stuck

  1548. but

  1549. if

  1550. you

  1551. look

  1552. on

  1553. a

  1554. map

  1555. now

  1556. you

  1557. find

  1558. Wall

  1559. Street

  1560. beyond

  1561. it

  1562. is

  1563. a

  1564. mass

  1565. of

  1566. streets

  1567. the

  1568. people

  1569. only

  1570. thought

  1571. they

  1572. would

  1573. go

  1574. so

  1575. far

  1576. and

  1577. populate

  1578. a

  1579. small

  1580. area

  1581. but

  1582. now

  1583. it's

  1584. stretching

  1585. beyond

  1586. what

  1587. the

  1588. eye

  1589. can

  1590. see

  1591. with

  1592. over

  1593. 8

  1594. million

  1595. people

  1596. living

  1597. in

  1598. New

  1599. York

  1600. and

  1601. its

  1602. surrounding

  1603. areas

  1604. the

  1605. people

  1606. who

  1607. first

  1608. landed

  1609. there

  1610. they

  1611. thought

  1612. this

  1613. will

  1614. be

  1615. us

  1616. but

  1617. as

  1618. it's

  1619. gone

  1620. on

  1621. it's

  1622. exceeded

  1623. what

  1624. anybody

  1625. could

  1626. see

  1627. well

  1628. when you

  1629. look at

  1630. the

  1631. church

  1632. in the

  1633. days

  1634. of

  1635. Jesus

  1636. when you

  1637. go

  1638. to

  1639. the

  1640. book

  1641. of

  1642. Acts

  1643. and

  1644. you

  1645. find

  1646. a

  1647. small

  1648. number

  1649. what

  1650. you

  1651. find

  1652. is

  1653. Jesus

  1654. speaking

  1655. to

  1656. them

  1657. and

  1658. saying

  1659. you're

  1660. going

  1661. to be

  1662. my

  1663. witnesses

  1664. here

  1665. in

  1666. Jerusalem

  1667. going

  1668. out

  1669. to

  1670. Judea

  1671. and

  1672. going

  1673. to

  1674. all

  1675. the

  1676. ends

  1677. of

  1678. the

  1679. earth

  1680. the

  1681. church

  1682. we

  1683. were

  1684. being

  1685. told

  1686. then

  1687. is

  1688. going

  1689. to

  1690. grow

  1691. and

  1692. the

  1693. church

  1694. is

  1695. still

  1696. growing

  1697. today

  1698. because

  1699. the

  1700. foundation

  1701. is

  1702. Jesus

  1703. Christ

  1704. and

  1705. his

  1706. church

  1707. is

  1708. being

  1709. built

  1710. until

  1711. he

  1712. comes

  1713. so

  1714. whatever

  1715. else

  1716. is

  1717. torn

  1718. down

  1719. in

  1720. our

  1721. world

  1722. whatever

  1723. else

  1724. shakes

  1725. our

  1726. world

  1727. today

  1728. and

  1729. our

  1730. world

  1731. is

  1732. being

  1733. shaken

  1734. it's

  1735. being

  1736. shaken

  1737. by

  1738. the

  1739. lies

  1740. that

  1741. people

  1742. take

  1743. refuge

  1744. in

  1745. it's

  1746. been

  1747. shaken

  1748. by

  1749. the

  1750. falsehood

  1751. that

  1752. people

  1753. find

  1754. hope

  1755. in

  1756. by

  1757. rejecting

  1758. God

  1759. don't

  1760. be

  1761. foolish

  1762. tonight

  1763. God

  1764. is

  1765. speaking

  1766. to

  1767. us

  1768. he

  1769. is

  1770. building

  1771. his

  1772. church

  1773. its

  1774. foundation

  1775. is

  1776. Jesus

  1777. Christ

  1778. a

  1779. precious

  1780. cornerstone

  1781. who

  1782. gave

  1783. himself

  1784. for

  1785. his

  1786. church

  1787. are

  1788. you

  1789. taking

  1790. refuge

  1791. in

  1792. the

  1793. lies

  1794. of

  1795. this

  1796. world

  1797. are

  1798. you

  1799. examining

  1800. yourself

  1801. under

  1802. the

  1803. word

  1804. of

  1805. God

  1806. and

  1807. saying

  1808. I

  1809. don't

  1810. need

  1811. him

  1812. you

  1813. need

  1814. him

  1815. now

  1816. because

  1817. God

  1818. is

  1819. sending

  1820. his

  1821. judgment

  1822. but

  1823. he has

  1824. offered

  1825. salvation

  1826. in

  1827. Christ

  1828. and

  1829. so

  1830. he

  1831. says

  1832. behold

  1833. I am

  1834. the one

  1835. who has

  1836. laid

  1837. as a

  1838. foundation

  1839. in

  1840. Zion

  1841. a

  1842. stone

  1843. a

  1844. tested

  1845. stone

  1846. a

  1847. precious

  1848. cornerstone

  1849. of sure

  1850. foundation

  1851. whoever

  1852. believes

  1853. in

  1854. him

  1855. we can

  1856. add

  1857. will

  1858. not

  1859. be put

  1860. to

  1861. shame

  1862. do

  1863. you

  1864. believe

  1865. in

  1866. Jesus

  1867. today

  1868. is a

  1869. day when

  1870. we see

  1871. so much

  1872. to make

  1873. us fear

  1874. in this

  1875. world

  1876. but for

  1877. every look

  1878. we take

  1879. at ourselves

  1880. take

  1881. ten looks

  1882. to Christ

  1883. his

  1884. excellency

  1885. his

  1886. beauty

  1887. and find

  1888. your

  1889. refuge

  1890. in

  1891. him

  1892. let us

  1893. pray

  1894. Lord our

  1895. gracious

  1896. God

  1897. we thank

  1898. you

  1899. that in

  1900. the world

  1901. that's full

  1902. of lies

  1903. and falsehoods

  1904. that we

  1905. do have

  1906. one

  1907. who is

  1908. truth

  1909. and who

  1910. is described

  1911. as we

  1912. have read

  1913. as that

  1914. precious

  1915. cornerstone

  1916. that sure

  1917. foundation

  1918. and help

  1919. us this

  1920. evening

  1921. that we

  1922. might find

  1923. our refuge

  1924. in him

  1925. so we

  1926. might be

  1927. safe

  1928. and secure

  1929. in a

  1930. world full

  1931. of trouble

  1932. that we

  1933. would see

  1934. that our

  1935. eternity

  1936. and our

  1937. eternal

  1938. life

  1939. is secure

  1940. through

  1941. faith in

  1942. him

  1943. Lord hear

  1944. us we

  1945. pray

  1946. and forgive

  1947. us our

  1948. sins

  1949. as we

  1950. ask all

  1951. in his

  1952. precious

  1953. name

  1954. Amen

  1955. we'll

  1956. conclude

  1957. by singing

  1958. to God's

  1959. praise

  1960. in

  1961. Psalm

  1962. 96

  1963. in

  1964. the

  1965. Scottish

  1966. Psalter

  1967. Psalm

  1968. 96

  1969. we're

  1970. going to

  1971. sing from

  1972. verse

  1973. 10

  1974. down to

  1975. the end

  1976. of the

  1977. psalm

  1978. to God's

  1979. praise

  1980. among the

  1981. heathens

  1982. say

  1983. God

  1984. reigns

  1985. the

  1986. world

  1987. shall

  1988. steadfast

  1989. lay

  1990. be

  1991. fixed

  1992. from

  1993. whom

  1994. he

  1995. shall

  1996. judge

  1997. the

  1998. people

  1999. righteously

  2000. let

  2001. him

  2002. be

  2003. glad

  2004. before

  2005. the

  2006. Lord

  2007. and

  2008. let

  2009. the

  2010. earth

  2011. rejoice

  2012. let

  2013. seas

  2014. and

  2015. all

  2016. that

  2017. is

  2018. therein

  2019. cry

  2020. out

  2021. and

  2022. make

  2023. a

  2024. noise

  2025. let

  2026. fields

  2027. rejoice

  2028. and

  2029. death

  2030. rejoice

  2031. everything

  2032. that

  2033. spring

  2034. earth

  2035. off

  2036. the

  2037. earth

  2038. then

  2039. woods

  2040. and

  2041. every

  2042. tree

  2043. shall

  2044. sing

  2045. with

  2046. blood

  2047. bless

  2048. and

  2049. with

  2050. mirth

  2051. before

  2052. the

  2053. Lord

  2054. because

  2055. he

  2056. comes

  2057. to

  2058. judge

  2059. the

  2060. earth

  2061. comes

  2062. he

  2063. he

  2064. he

  2065. he

  2066. he

  2067. he

  2068. he

  2069. he

  2070. he

  2071. he

  2072. he

  2073. he

  2074. he

  2075. he

  2076. he

  2077. he

  2078. he

  2079. he

  2080. he

  2081. he

  2082. benediction

2083. i'll go to the main door and close with the benediction

2084. now may grace mercy and peace from god father son and holy spirit rest and abide with you all now and forevermore amen
