  1. For a few moments this evening we'll turn to look at Psalm 107.

  2. We're going to be looking over really the whole of this psalm.

  3. We can read at the beginning and at the very end of the psalm.

  4. Verse 1 it says to us, O give thanks to the Lord,

  5. for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

  6. And then the last verse, verse 43, it says,

  7. Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things.

  8. Let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

  9. So the psalm begins and ends with that theme of the steadfast love of the Lord.

  10. And in between we find a number of different circumstances that people find themselves in

  11. in order to consider the steadfast love of God that doesn't change.

  12. As time goes on, as the years go past and months and weeks,

  13. one thing that becomes apparent more and more,

  14. and we're reminded of more and more,

  15. is the variety of people around us

  16. and the variety of situations that people find themselves in.

  17. In one moment, there's a people who are celebrating and rejoicing.

  18. At this time of year, week by week pretty much,

  19. you'll see around the town or in different parts of the country as well,

  20. you'll see people getting married, special days, days of much joy and happiness,

  21. and you see that taking place.

  22. And yet on the other hand, you'll see people on the other end of the spectrum

  23. who are going through such trials and difficulties,

  24. many that are so difficult for us to even try and contemplate for ourselves sorrow and sadness

  25. that seems to go beyond our imagination at times.

  26. There's that variety of people and variety of situations that they find themselves in,

  27. the highs and the lows, and life is full of that.

  28. But one thing I'm sure maybe all of you or many of you at least experience in the midst of life

  29. and all that comes our way,

  30. in all the changes and all the variety that we see around us,

  31. it's so good to know that there is something that doesn't change,

  32. that there is something that is always constant

  33. in the midst of everything that goes on,

  34. in every change, in everything that comes our way,

  35. that we can come to the Word of God

  36. and see that what doesn't change is this steadfast love of God.

  37. A love that doesn't change

  38. because it is a love that's from the promise of God himself.

  39. Promises that you see running throughout Scripture.

  40. Promises that God gives from beginning to end.

  41. Great and wonderful promises that we can claim and cling on to

  42. in the midst of the highs and in the midst of the lows as well.

  43. That God is a God for his people.

  44. That he has made that covenant promise.

  45. I will be your God and you will be my people.

  46. And in that we find a God who,

  47. these words especially,

  48. the steadfast love of the Lord.

  49. How precious these words are

  50. and how important these words are for us,

  51. especially as we come to put our trust fully in the Lord.

  52. To put our trust in him who is able to save.

  53. But in our experience in life,

  54. the Lord will bring us through

  55. maybe many different experiences, situations,

  56. in order for us to cry out for that help.

  57. And to cry out to the Lord in that sense of,

  58. we need you.

  59. We need you in this situation, Lord.

  60. We can't do without you.

  61. And then as we come through that situation,

  62. as the psalm reminds us,

  63. we are encouraged and challenged indeed

  64. to remember the steadfast love of the Lord.

  65. And so as we look at this psalm together this evening,

  66. we see a variety of people

  67. in a variety of different situations.

  68. But they all have something in common.

  69. You see the verses that are repeated

  70. throughout this psalm.

  71. We'll look at it as we're going through.

  72. But you see that in each situation

  73. that the people find themselves in,

  74. that the same words are repeated

  75. in every situation.

  76. And the same constant in it all

  77. as well as the steadfast love of God.

  78. So there are both variables and constants

  79. in this psalm.

  80. And that's what we want to look at together

  81. this evening.

  82. But before you come into these situations,

  83. the opening verses of this psalm

  84. make it clear to us,

  85. verse 1 to verse 3,

  86. that this is indeed a psalm of thanksgiving,

  87. a psalm of thanking God

  88. in the midst of everything.

  89. O give thanks to the Lord,

  90. for He is good,

  91. for His steadfast love endures always.

  92. The foundation of our thanks

  93. is that steadfast love of God that endures.

  94. But there's that challenge to us straight away.

  95. O give thanks to the Lord.

  96. And it's the same challenge

  97. that you find in each situation

  98. that the people are in us

  99. will see as well.

  100. But look at the vastness

  101. of God's work here.

  102. Look at where this steadfast love is seen.

  103. When you look at these opening three verses,

  104. in verse 3,

  105. gathered in from the lands,

  106. from the east and from the west,

  107. from the north and from the south.

  108. God's saving work is so vast.

  109. This steadfast love goes out

  110. through all ends of the earth,

  111. from north, south, east and west.

  112. But you see also that God's work

  113. is so necessary.

  114. In verse 2, it says,

  115. let the redeemed of the Lord say so,

  116. whom He has redeemed from trouble.

  117. The people of God are in trouble.

  118. And we as a people,

  119. we're always finding ourselves

  120. in that troubled situation.

  121. Different places we find ourselves in

  122. where we know we need the Lord.

  123. We need that Redeemer.

  124. We need that saving work of God

  125. in the midst of our lives.

  126. So we see how God's work

  127. is so necessary.

  128. And we see there too,

  129. as you go back to verse 1,

  130. how God's work is so enduring.

  131. It's a never-ending love

  132. that He shows to His people.

  133. The Lord, He is good,

  134. for His steadfast love

  135. endures forever.

  136. It is an ongoing love,

  137. steadfast love,

  138. that is there for His people.

  139. So the psalm is a psalm of thanksgiving

  140. that is so broad and wide in its nature,

  141. in its distance,

  142. north, south, east, and west,

  143. in redeeming from the troubles

  144. of this world

  145. and in showing how enduring this love is.

  146. It's a never-ending love.

  147. And after these first three verses,

  148. then you go in to see

  149. four different sections

  150. where it speaks about people

  151. finding themselves

  152. in times of trouble.

  153. And how in the midst of time of trouble,

  154. they're still able

  155. to thank the Lord

  156. for His steadfast love.

  157. There's a German pastor

  158. in the 1600s

  159. called Martin Rinkert.

  160. And he lived and ministered

  161. in a very difficult time

  162. when there was war

  163. and conflict going on.

  164. And he was taking so many funerals

  165. in his experience

  166. that it was just never-ending.

  167. He was burying thousands of people

  168. within a year.

  169. And yet in the midst of it all,

  170. he was still able to thank the Lord.

  171. And he wrote a hymn.

  172. And the hymn's title was

  173. Now Thank We All Our God.

  174. And the first verse of it goes like this.

  175. Now thank we all, our God,

  176. with heart and hands and voices,

  177. whose wondrous things,

  178. who wondrous things has done,

  179. in whom his world rejoices,

  180. who from our mother's arms

  181. has blessed us on our way

  182. with countless gifts of love

  183. and still is ours today.

  184. How he was able to see

  185. in the midst of everything

  186. that was going on,

  187. the wonder of God

  188. and the steadfast love of God

  189. that was the constant companion

  190. throughout all his days,

  191. even in the most difficult

  192. of experiences.

  193. And we maybe see that

  194. in our own lives as well.

  195. As we go through

  196. so many different experiences

  197. in life,

  198. we have that assurance

  199. as we trust in the Lord

  200. of his steadfast love

  201. that never changes.

  202. So we're going to look at

  203. the four different situations

  204. that we see people in.

  205. And what we find is

  206. that they have a common thread

  207. in each one.

  208. You see in each one

  209. there is the problem,

  210. a different problem

  211. in each part.

  212. Then there is the prayer.

  213. They cry to the Lord.

  214. And then you see

  215. that there is the provision

  216. that the Lord makes.

  217. And then finally you see

  218. the praise

  219. that they're encouraged to give.

  220. And so the first thing you see

  221. is the problem.

  222. And you see this

  223. in the different sections.

  224. Verse 4 and 5,

  225. you see the first one there.

  226. Some wandered in desert wastes,

  227. finding no way to a city

  228. to dwell in.

  229. Hungry and thirsty,

  230. their soul fainted within them.

  231. There were those

  232. who have lost their way.

  233. There are those

  234. who have wandered

  235. in desert wastes,

  236. finding no way to a city.

  237. They were lost

  238. and they were in

  239. a desperate condition.

  240. And they were wondering

  241. to themselves,

  242. how are they going to survive?

  243. How are they going

  244. to get through this?

  245. And the word they wandered,

  246. the wanderers,

  247. it means to stagger.

  248. So it shows

  249. there was this weakness.

  250. They were alone,

  251. they were weak,

  252. they were nearly gone.

  253. And so they are wandering,

  254. lost in this world.

  255. And it's a reminder

  256. to ourselves

  257. of how we so often

  258. have found

  259. or maybe are finding ourselves

  260. in that situation as well.

  261. We're living in a world

  262. but we can feel lost in it

  263. without direction,

  264. without knowing

  265. just where are we going

  266. in our lives.

  267. Many of us have either

  268. been there

  269. or maybe are even there

  270. just now.

  271. We're wondering just

  272. what is life about?

  273. We're not finding direction.

  274. We're not finding

  275. our way.

  276. It reminds us of the story

  277. of the prodigal son

  278. in the New Testament

  279. who had left

  280. everything behind,

  281. taken the money

  282. from his father

  283. and wanted to go

  284. and live his own life.

  285. And he thought

  286. this is it,

  287. my freedom.

  288. And yet he finds himself

  289. wandering around

  290. in the waste,

  291. eating the food

  292. of pigs to survive

  293. and wondering

  294. how have I ended up here?

  295. Is there no point

  296. and direction

  297. in my life?

  298. And so there's

  299. the wanderers here.

  300. We find

  301. the first problem,

  302. the people

  303. who are just lost

  304. and without direction.

  305. The second one

  306. we see then

  307. is in verse 10.

  308. Another section

  309. begins there.

  310. Some sat in darkness

  311. and in the shadow

  312. of death,

  313. prisoners in affliction

  314. and in irons,

  315. for they had rebelled

  316. against the words

  317. of God

  318. and spurned

  319. the counsel

  320. of the Most High.

  321. They're prisoners.

  322. They're locked in.

  323. And again,

  324. you see just that darkness

  325. that surrounds them here.

  326. And what you find is

  327. it's because of

  328. what they've done themselves,

  329. because of the way

  330. that they have rebelled,

  331. as verse 11 makes clear.

  332. They rebelled against

  333. the Word of God.

  334. And again,

  335. in our lives,

  336. who of us

  337. have rebelled

  338. against the Word of God?

  339. We've said,

  340. no,

  341. I will not listen

  342. to what the Word of God is.

  343. I don't need that Word.

  344. It's not for me.

  345. And we find ourselves

  346. thinking we've got freedom,

  347. but all it means

  348. is that we're in prison,

  349. that we're in darkness,

  350. that we're lost.

  351. And it's all

  352. of our own doing.

  353. We feel that

  354. sense of being trapped.

  355. And so many things

  356. can make us prisoners

  357. in that sense

  358. in this life.

  359. Jealousy

  360. and anger

  361. and maybe hurt

  362. in the past

  363. and unforgiving spirit,

  364. hatred towards

  365. either people,

  366. even the church.

  367. People turn against

  368. the church.

  369. They have their own ideas

  370. and they spurn

  371. the Word of God

  372. and we'll be free

  373. from that,

  374. but you're never free.

  375. We're still in darkness.

  376. We're putting God away,

  377. but we're only ending up

  378. in darkness ourselves

  379. more and more.

  380. So we see there

  381. another problem.

  382. And you see the third one

  383. in verse 17 and 18.

  384. Again,

  385. you see a new section there.

  386. Some were fools

  387. through their sinful ways

  388. and because of their iniquities

  389. suffered affliction.

  390. They loathed any kind of food

  391. and they grew near

  392. to the gates of death.

  393. Sin is at the heart of it all

  394. and we're reminded of that

  395. in this section.

  396. Fools through their sinful ways.

  397. The fool says in his heart

  398. there is no God.

  399. That's sin to say

  400. there is no God.

  401. And from there

  402. just leads to this

  403. downward spiral

  404. and life

  405. where sin just

  406. takes over our life.

  407. We think nothing of it.

  408. Sin just becomes

  409. a natural part

  410. of how we live.

  411. But yet we are fools

  412. to go on living like that.

  413. Fools through their sinful ways.

  414. Then the fourth one you see,

  415. then the fourth problem

  416. is in verse 23 there.

  417. Another section begins.

  418. Some.

  419. So it's always talking

  420. about these some.

  421. Different people

  422. in different situations.

  423. Some went down

  424. to the sea and ships

  425. doing business

  426. on the great waters.

  427. They saw the deeds

  428. of the Lord

  429. as wondrous works

  430. in the deep.

  431. And so it goes on.

  432. And in this experience,

  433. they end up reeling

  434. and staggering

  435. like drunken men

  436. in this storm.

  437. They're overwhelmed

  438. by life,

  439. tossed about.

  440. And it's just the way

  441. life can sometimes

  442. leave us feeling like that.

  443. Overwhelmed

  444. in so many situations.

  445. That it's just like

  446. a storm

  447. all around us

  448. as we were thinking

  449. about this morning.

  450. Instead of having

  451. that peace with God,

  452. there's nothing

  453. but trouble

  454. coming our way.

  455. And without the Lord

  456. in our lives,

  457. without Jesus

  458. in our lives,

  459. we're just floundering around.

  460. We're being tossed around

  461. by the sea.

  462. And so we see

  463. there's four different kinds

  464. of people here.

  465. Four different situations.

  466. Four different situations

  467. that we maybe have had

  468. in our own lives

  469. or have.

  470. We're wanderers.

  471. We're prisoners.

  472. We're the sick in sin.

  473. We're the overwhelmed

  474. by the storms of life.

  475. At the heart of them all

  476. is the sin

  477. of our hearts.

  478. The sin in this world

  479. that leads us

  480. down these paths

  481. away from God.

  482. There is the problem

  483. for us

  484. and indeed

  485. for the world.

  486. But is there

  487. an answer?

  488. Well you see

  489. in all of these situations

  490. we find

  491. the answer.

  492. And the answer

  493. is prayer.

  494. For in every situation

  495. you find here

  496. the constant is

  497. then they cried

  498. to the Lord

  499. in their trouble

  500. and he delivered them

  501. from their distress.

  502. That verse

  503. is repeated

  504. in each of these sections.

  505. It's there

  506. in each one.

  507. Then they cried

  508. to the Lord

  509. in their trouble

  510. and he delivered them

  511. from their distress.

  512. What is able

  513. to help

  514. in our situation

  515. today?

  516. We can cry out

  517. for help

  518. to friends

  519. to family

  520. even to strangers

  521. at times.

  522. We can cry out

  523. to the world

  524. to help us

  525. in all our different

  526. situations

  527. to give us the answers

  528. to all our different needs

  529. but there is only one

  530. who can help.

  531. And that answer

  532. is given to us

  533. in this psalm

  534. in the midst

  535. of the variety

  536. of people

  537. the variety

  538. of different problems

  539. there is only one

  540. answer

  541. and that is

  542. to pray

  543. to cry

  544. out

  545. to the Lord.

  546. Now you notice

  547. it doesn't give

  548. the prayer

  549. to cry.

  550. All it says

  551. is that they cried

  552. to the Lord

  553. in their trouble.

  554. It may not be

  555. a long

  556. eloquent prayer

  557. it may not have

  558. much substance

  559. it may even just be

  560. a groan

  561. but it's directed

  562. towards the Lord

  563. towards the Lord

  564. who is able

  565. to help.

  566. Prayer is that

  567. opportunity

  568. to speak

  569. to God

  570. who is able

  571. to help.

  572. And again

  573. you have given

  574. so many reminders

  575. through scripture

  576. of what crying out

  577. to the Lord

  578. means.

  579. You have that

  580. great account

  581. in 1 Kings 18

  582. when Elijah

  583. is there with

  584. Ahab

  585. and his people

  586. his prophets

  587. Ahab's prophets

  588. Elijah is just

  589. one man

  590. but he trusts

  591. in God

  592. and he puts

  593. a challenge

  594. before Ahab

  595. and all his

  596. prophets

  597. and say

  598. you cry

  599. to your gods

  600. and I'll cry

  601. to my God

  602. and see

  603. who sends

  604. down fire

  605. who is able

  606. to help

  607. in that situation

  608. and Elijah

  609. as they're saying

  610. to them

  611. keep crying

  612. maybe he's not

  613. hearing you

  614. maybe he's not

  615. listening just now

  616. but he will

  617. eventually

  618. and nothing

  619. comes

  620. because their

  621. gods

  622. are not able

  623. to help

  624. but Elijah's

  625. God

  626. our God

  627. he sends

  628. down fire

  629. he hears

  630. and he answers

  631. and that is

  632. the God

  633. that we cry

  634. out to today

  635. for ourselves

  636. or for others

  637. the one

  638. who is able

  639. the same

  640. as Paul

  641. speaks about

  642. in Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  643. chapter 10

  644. he reminds us

  645. there that we

  646. are to call

  647. on the name

  648. of the Lord

  649. he says

  650. because

  651. if you confess

  652. with your mouth

  653. that Jesus

  654. is Lord

  655. and believe

  656. in your heart

  657. that God

  658. raised him

  659. from the dead

  660. you will be

  661. saved

  662. why

  663. because he

  664. goes on

  665. in verse 13

  666. to say

  667. for everyone

  668. who calls

  669. on the name

  670. of the Lord

  671. will be saved

  672. if we are truly

  673. calling out

  674. to God

  675. if we are calling

  676. out in our

  677. desperation

  678. that cry of faith

  679. they cried

  680. to the Lord

  681. in their trouble

  682. and he relieved

  683. them

  684. from their distress

  685. he is the one

  686. who is able

  687. to help

  688. we don't always

  689. see our need

  690. at times

  691. and there are

  692. many people

  693. living in this world

  694. and they're lost

  695. but they don't

  696. know it

  697. because they feel

  698. that everything

  699. is going fine

  700. everything is fine

  701. it'll be

  702. okay at the end

  703. you hear

  704. so many funerals

  705. now in the mainland

  706. especially

  707. where they play

  708. songs

  709. and Frank Sinatra

  710. as I did it

  711. my way

  712. that's so common

  713. now

  714. but that is

  715. the song

  716. that they sang

  717. I did it

  718. my way

  719. but it's not

  720. the song

  721. of salvation

  722. as we were

  723. thinking of

  724. this morning

  725. and it's not

  726. the cry

  727. that we see

  728. we need

  729. here

  730. the cry

  731. that we need

  732. here

  733. is to call

  734. upon the name

  735. of the Lord

  736. not do it

  737. our way

  738. but to seek

  739. to do it

  740. his way

  741. that he would

  742. direct us

  743. Thomas Aquinas

  744. he once put it

  745. like this

  746. bestow upon me

  747. oh Lord

  748. my God

  749. understanding

  750. understanding

  751. to know

  752. the

  753. diligence

  754. to seek

  755. the

  756. wisdom

  757. to find

  758. the

  759. and a

  760. faithfulness

  761. that may

  762. finally

  763. embrace

  764. thee

  765. it's all

  766. about this

  767. coming

  768. to cry

  769. to the

  770. Lord

  771. in our

  772. trouble

  773. so we

  774. have

  775. the problem

  776. there are

  777. four different

  778. sets of

  779. people and

  780. situations

  781. but the

  782. prayer is

  783. there for

  784. us to see

  785. that the

  786. prayer

  787. is the

  788. same in

  789. every

  790. situation

  791. and it's

  792. the same

  793. that's true

  794. for us

  795. today

  796. we cry

  797. to the

  798. Lord

  799. in our

  800. trouble

  801. we ask

  802. him

  803. to help

  804. for he

  805. is able

  806. to relieve

  807. us

  808. in our

  809. distress

  810. to give

  811. comfort

  812. to give

  813. hope

  814. that's the

  815. third thing

  816. that we

  817. see

  818. but we

  819. see as

  820. they cry

  821. to the

  822. Lord

  823. the Lord

  824. makes

  825. provision

  826. for them

  827. in each

  828. situation

  829. we see

  830. that they

  831. could not

  832. help

  833. themselves

  834. they could

  835. not

  836. free

  837. themselves

  838. they

  839. needed

  840. a

  841. redeemer

  842. they

  843. needed

  844. someone

  845. to save

  846. them

  847. as it

  848. says in

  849. verse 2

  850. let the

  851. redeemed

  852. of the

  853. Lord

  854. say so

  855. whom he

  856. has

  857. redeemed

  858. from

  859. trouble

  860. he needs

  861. to be

  862. the one

  863. who saves

  864. we cannot

  865. do it

  866. ourselves

  867. and this

  868. is the

  869. story of

  870. scripture

  871. from beginning

  872. to end

  873. that God

  874. is a

  875. redeeming

  876. God

  877. God

  878. is a

  879. saving

  880. God

  881. you see

  882. it

  883. when you

  884. go back

  885. to the

  886. Old

  887. Testament

  888. how he

  889. redeemed

  890. his

  891. people

  892. from

  893. slavery

  894. in

  895. Egypt

  896. even as

  897. we were

  898. looking at

  899. Isaiah

  900. this morning

  901. it was

  902. the Lord

  903. that redeemed

  904. them

  905. when they

  906. were taken

  907. into

  908. captivity

  909. you see

  910. he does

  911. it for

  912. nations

  913. of people

  914. but you

  915. also see

  916. that he

  917. does for

  918. individuals

  919. as well

  920. you think

  921. of the

  922. beautiful

  923. story

  924. of Ruth

  925. and how

  926. she

  927. found

  928. a

  929. kinsman

  930. redeemer

  931. when she

  932. married

  933. Boaz

  934. a beautiful

  935. story

  936. but it's

  937. all about

  938. the wonder

  939. of a

  940. redeemer

  941. a redeemer

  942. for an

  943. individual

  944. as well

  945. as a

  946. wider

  947. people

  948. and that's

  949. the wonder

  950. of the

  951. redeemer

  952. that we

  953. have in

  954. Jesus

  955. Christ

  956. that he

  957. is the

  958. one who

  959. is able

  960. to save

  961. us

  962. in our

  963. trouble

  964. as you

  965. see in

  966. each

  967. situation

  968. here

  969. the

  970. redeemer

  971. comes

  972. to their

  973. aid

  974. and he

  975. shows

  976. his

  977. steadfast

  978. love

  979. his

  980. covenant

  981. love

  982. that

  983. endures

  984. always

  985. you see

  986. it in

  987. verse 7

  988. in that

  989. first

  990. situation

  991. he led

  992. them

  993. he led

  994. them by

  995. a straight

  996. way

  997. till they

  998. reached

  999. a city

  1000. to dwell

  1001. in

  1002. he brought

  1003. them

  1004. to a

  1005. place

  1006. of

  1007. security

  1008. a place

  1009. of safety

  1010. after they

  1011. had cried

  1012. to the

  1013. Lord

  1014. you see

  1015. it in

  1016. verse 14

  1017. he brought

  1018. them out

  1019. of darkness

  1020. and the

  1021. shadow

  1022. of death

  1023. and burst

  1024. their bonds

  1025. apart

  1026. he freed

  1027. them

  1028. freed them

  1029. from the

  1030. prison

  1031. that they

  1032. were in

  1033. and he's

  1034. able to

  1035. do that

  1036. you see

  1037. it in

  1038. verse 20

  1039. he sent

  1040. out his

  1041. word

  1042. and healed

  1043. them

  1044. and delivered

  1045. them from

  1046. their destruction

  1047. they had

  1048. been fools

  1049. they had

  1050. been sick

  1051. in their

  1052. sin

  1053. but the

  1054. word of

  1055. God

  1056. healed

  1057. them

  1058. the

  1059. redeemer

  1060. can

  1061. heal

  1062. you see

  1063. it in

  1064. verse 29

  1065. again

  1066. he made

  1067. the storm

  1068. be still

  1069. and the

  1070. waves of

  1071. the sea

  1072. were hushed

  1073. in every

  1074. situation

  1075. you see

  1076. a different

  1077. kind of

  1078. peace

  1079. being brought

  1080. but it's

  1081. always

  1082. he has

  1083. made it

  1084. possible

  1085. he has

  1086. brought

  1087. he has

  1088. led them

  1089. he has

  1090. brought them

  1091. out

  1092. he has

  1093. sent out

  1094. his word

  1095. and healed

  1096. them

  1097. he has

  1098. made the

  1099. storm

  1100. to be

  1101. still

  1102. he is

  1103. the one

  1104. who is

  1105. able

  1106. he is

  1107. the one

  1108. who has

  1109. made

  1110. provision

  1111. for his

  1112. people

  1113. and again

  1114. that is

  1115. true for

  1116. us today

  1117. as we

  1118. cry out

  1119. to the

  1120. Lord

  1121. now

  1122. trouble

  1123. what

  1124. provision

  1125. has he

  1126. made

  1127. for us

  1128. for all

  1129. who are

  1130. lost in

  1131. this world

  1132. for all

  1133. who are

  1134. caught up

  1135. in the

  1136. sin

  1137. of this

  1138. world

  1139. and maybe

  1140. think

  1141. there is

  1142. no

  1143. freedom

  1144. for me

  1145. in the

  1146. midst

  1147. of my

  1148. sin

  1149. there is

  1150. no hope

  1151. for me

  1152. in the

  1153. midst

  1154. of my

  1155. sin

  1156. what has

  1157. he done

  1158. he has

  1159. provided

  1160. a redeemer

  1161. he has

  1162. provided a

  1163. redeemer

  1164. who is

  1165. his own

  1166. son

  1167. Jesus

  1168. Christ

  1169. there is

  1170. only

  1171. one

  1172. Christ

  1173. has

  1174. redeemed

  1175. his

  1176. people

  1177. he came

  1178. to save

  1179. his

  1180. people

  1181. from

  1182. their

  1183. sins

  1184. and that

  1185. is the

  1186. wonder

  1187. of the

  1188. steadfast

  1189. love

  1190. of God

  1191. that God

  1192. loved

  1193. his

  1194. people

  1195. so much

  1196. that he

  1197. gave

  1198. his

  1199. own

  1200. son

  1201. the

  1202. redeemer

  1203. has

  1204. come

  1205. as the

  1206. hymn writer

  1207. puts it

  1208. there is a

  1209. redeemer

  1210. Jesus

  1211. God's

  1212. own

  1213. son

  1214. precious

  1215. lamb

  1216. of God

  1217. Messiah

  1218. holy

  1219. one

  1220. there is

  1221. a

  1222. redeemer

  1223. and the

  1224. only

  1225. redeemer

  1226. of God's

  1227. elect

  1228. as the

  1229. shorter

  1230. catech

  1231. puts it

  1232. is the

  1233. Lord

  1234. Jesus

  1235. Christ

  1236. there is

  1237. our

  1238. provision

  1239. in the

  1240. midst of

  1241. all that

  1242. is wrong

  1243. in this

  1244. world

  1245. and all

  1246. the

  1247. problems

  1248. that we

  1249. have

  1250. and all

  1251. the cries

  1252. that we

  1253. offer out

  1254. the

  1255. pleas

  1256. the

  1257. prayer

  1258. for

  1259. help

  1260. there is

  1261. one

  1262. who

  1263. is able

  1264. to

  1265. help

  1266. one

  1267. who

  1268. is able

  1269. to

  1270. save

  1271. and that

  1272. is

  1273. Jesus

  1274. Christ

  1275. he is

  1276. able to

  1277. save

  1278. his people

  1279. from their

  1280. sins

  1281. and when we

  1282. know that

  1283. salvation

  1284. when we

  1285. know Jesus

  1286. Christ

  1287. as our

  1288. redeemer

  1289. where does

  1290. that lead

  1291. us to

  1292. well surely

  1293. it leads us

  1294. to our

  1295. final thing

  1296. that we

  1297. see here

  1298. it should

  1299. lead us

  1300. to

  1301. praise

  1302. in all

  1303. of these

  1304. situations

  1305. in all

  1306. the four

  1307. different

  1308. situations

  1309. again there

  1310. is a

  1311. constant

  1312. in each

  1313. situation

  1314. he says

  1315. let them

  1316. thank the

  1317. Lord for

  1318. his steadfast

  1319. love

  1320. for his

  1321. wondrous

  1322. works to

  1323. the children

  1324. of men

  1325. so that is

  1326. the conclusion

  1327. of each of

  1328. these four

  1329. sections

  1330. all these

  1331. different

  1332. people who

  1333. find themselves

  1334. in different

  1335. situations

  1336. he is able

  1337. to provide

  1338. a way out

  1339. he is able

  1340. to redeem

  1341. and then there

  1342. is this

  1343. call

  1344. let them

  1345. thank the

  1346. Lord

  1347. for his

  1348. steadfast

  1349. love

  1350. you know

  1351. so often

  1352. people

  1353. will say

  1354. well I'm

  1355. going to

  1356. call on

  1357. God for

  1358. help

  1359. as they

  1360. face up

  1361. to a

  1362. challenge

  1363. a difficult

  1364. situation

  1365. the Lord

  1366. provides

  1367. gives grace

  1368. he gives

  1369. help

  1370. and so many

  1371. people come

  1372. through and they

  1373. forget

  1374. forget

  1375. what the

  1376. Lord has

  1377. helped

  1378. forget

  1379. what the

  1380. Lord has

  1381. done

  1382. it's like

  1383. the parable

  1384. of the

  1385. ten lepers

  1386. they were

  1387. all healed

  1388. but only one

  1389. came back

  1390. to thank

  1391. the Lord

  1392. and he said

  1393. where are

  1394. the others

  1395. well they'd

  1396. all gone

  1397. their own

  1398. way

  1399. that's what

  1400. this psalm

  1401. is reminding

  1402. us of as well

  1403. as we are

  1404. looking for

  1405. help in this

  1406. life as the

  1407. Lord provides

  1408. graciously help

  1409. to us

  1410. well we're

  1411. reminded let

  1412. us thank

  1413. the Lord

  1414. for his

  1415. steadfast love

  1416. for his

  1417. covenant love

  1418. his constant

  1419. love

  1420. let us not

  1421. forget what

  1422. the Lord has

  1423. done for

  1424. us

  1425. he has

  1426. rescued us

  1427. he has

  1428. saved us

  1429. through Jesus

  1430. Christ

  1431. is that not

  1432. worthy of

  1433. all our

  1434. praise

  1435. a call

  1436. to thanks

  1437. oh give

  1438. thanks to the

  1439. Lord for he

  1440. is good

  1441. his steadfast

  1442. love

  1443. endures

  1444. forever

  1445. that's the

  1446. cry at the

  1447. start

  1448. it's the

  1449. cry throughout

  1450. let them

  1451. give thanks

  1452. to the

  1453. Lord for

  1454. his steadfast

  1455. love

  1456. for his

  1457. wondrous

  1458. works to

  1459. the children

  1460. of men

  1461. it's the

  1462. psalm as the

  1463. hymn writer

  1464. sees another

  1465. hymn thank

  1466. you oh my

  1467. father for

  1468. giving us

  1469. your son

  1470. and sending

  1471. us your

  1472. spirit

  1473. till the

  1474. work on

  1475. earth

  1476. is done

  1477. thank you

  1478. oh my

  1479. father for

  1480. giving us

  1481. your son

  1482. that we

  1483. have a

  1484. redeemer

  1485. so the

  1486. call is

  1487. there to

  1488. thanksgiving

  1489. because his

  1490. steadfast love

  1491. endures

  1492. always

  1493. what is the

  1494. most important

  1495. verse in

  1496. this psalm

  1497. it's a

  1498. fairly long

  1499. psalm

  1500. and it

  1501. covers a

  1502. lot of

  1503. ground

  1504. but what

  1505. is the

  1506. most important

  1507. verse

  1508. is there

  1509. a most

  1510. important

  1511. verse

  1512. well somebody

  1513. said there

  1514. is

  1515. one writer

  1516. said the

  1517. last verse

  1518. is the

  1519. most

  1520. important

  1521. why

  1522. well look

  1523. at the

  1524. last verse

  1525. whoever

  1526. is wise

  1527. let him

  1528. attend

  1529. to these

  1530. things

  1531. let him

  1532. consider

  1533. the

  1534. steadfast

  1535. love

  1536. of the

  1537. lord

  1538. why

  1539. is that

  1540. so

  1541. important

  1542. well it

  1543. speaks to

  1544. us

  1545. about

  1546. wisdom

  1547. what is

  1548. it

  1549. to be

  1550. wise

  1551. the world

  1552. will tell

  1553. us so

  1554. many things

  1555. that are

  1556. wise

  1557. according

  1558. to them

  1559. but according

  1560. to the word

  1561. of god

  1562. wisdom's

  1563. beginning

  1564. is the

  1565. fear of

  1566. the lord

  1567. that doesn't

  1568. mean just

  1569. to run

  1570. away

  1571. scared

  1572. from the

  1573. lord

  1574. it

  1575. means

  1576. to

  1577. consider

  1578. the lord

  1579. to look

  1580. to the

  1581. lord

  1582. to be in

  1583. awe

  1584. of the

  1585. lord

  1586. it's the

  1587. one

  1588. who is

  1589. god

  1590. over all

  1591. and so

  1592. it says

  1593. here

  1594. whoever

  1595. is wise

  1596. let him

  1597. attend

  1598. to these

  1599. things

  1600. that these

  1601. are important

  1602. matters

  1603. these are

  1604. important

  1605. things

  1606. in our

  1607. own

  1608. experience

  1609. so that

  1610. whatever

  1611. situation

  1612. we find

  1613. ourselves

  1614. in

  1615. whether we

  1616. are the

  1617. wanderers

  1618. whether we

  1619. are the

  1620. prisoners

  1621. whether we

  1622. are those

  1623. who are

  1624. sick

  1625. in sin

  1626. whether we

  1627. are those

  1628. who are

  1629. being tossed

  1630. around in

  1631. the storms

  1632. of this

  1633. life

  1634. let us

  1635. consider

  1636. these

  1637. things

  1638. and let

  1639. us see

  1640. where our

  1641. help is

  1642. found

  1643. it is

  1644. found in

  1645. crying out

  1646. to the

  1647. lord

  1648. who is

  1649. able

  1650. to relieve

  1651. us

  1652. from our

  1653. troubles

  1654. to bring

  1655. us

  1656. out

  1657. so it

  1658. says

  1659. let them

  1660. attend

  1661. to these

  1662. things

  1663. but then

  1664. it concludes

  1665. let them

  1666. consider

  1667. the steadfast

  1668. love

  1669. of the

  1670. lord

  1671. look

  1672. on these

  1673. things

  1674. look

  1675. on the

  1676. lord

  1677. and his

  1678. steadfast

  1679. love

  1680. that is

  1681. unchanging

  1682. in all

  1683. our lives

  1684. he is

  1685. there

  1686. for his

  1687. people

  1688. he has

  1689. promised

  1690. that those

  1691. who cry

  1692. will be

  1693. saved

  1694. so we

  1695. can come

  1696. in confidence

  1697. whoever is

  1698. wise

  1699. let him

  1700. attend

  1701. to these

  1702. things

  1703. let him

  1704. consider

  1705. the

  1706. steadfast

  1707. love

  1708. of the

  1709. lord

  1710. let us

  1711. let us

  1712. consider

  1713. the

  1714. steadfast

  1715. love

  1716. love

  1717. of the

  1718. lord

  1719. and see

  1720. if he

  1721. is not

  1722. worthy

  1723. of all

  1724. our

  1725. praise

  1726. let us

  1727. come

  1728. and give

  1729. thanks to

  1730. the lord

  1731. for he

  1732. is good

  1733. for his

  1734. steadfast

  1735. love

  1736. endures

  1737. forever

  1738. let us

  1739. pray

  1740. lord we do

  1741. thank you

  1742. for your

  1743. word and

  1744. for all the

  1745. truths that

  1746. we find

  1747. in them

  1748. the promises

  1749. that we see

  1750. before us

  1751. a new

  1752. day by

  1753. day that

  1754. you are

  1755. a good

  1756. god

  1757. who is

  1758. gracious

  1759. to his

  1760. people

  1761. that your

  1762. steadfast

  1763. love

  1764. endures

  1765. forever

  1766. we pray

  1767. to know

  1768. more

  1769. of that

  1770. enduring

  1771. love

  1772. that you

  1773. have

  1774. shown

  1775. so hear

  1776. our prayers

  1777. continue

  1778. with us

  1779. as we

  1780. ask all

  1781. in jesus

  1782. name

  1783. amen

  1784. well we

  1785. conclude by

  1786. singing

  1787. from this

  1788. psalm that

  1789. we've been

  1790. looking at

  1791. we sing the

  1792. last three

  1793. verses

  1794. in the

  1795. scottish

  1796. psalter

  1797. psalm 107

  1798. at verse

  1799. 41

  1800. page 385

  1801. yet

  1802. setteth

  1803. he the

  1804. poor

  1805. on high

  1806. from all

  1807. his

  1808. miseries

  1809. and he

  1810. much like

  1811. unto a

  1812. flock

  1813. doth make

  1814. him

  1815. families

  1816. and at

  1817. the end

  1818. whoso is

  1819. wise

  1820. and will

  1821. these

  1822. things

  1823. observe

  1824. and then

  1825. record

  1826. even they

  1827. shall

  1828. understand

  1829. the love

  1830. and kindness

  1831. of the

  1832. lord

  1833. with these

  1834. last three

  1835. verses

  1836. the

  1837. tunas

  1838. montrose

  1839. we stand

  1840. to sing

  1841. up

  1842. Amen.

  1843. Amen.

1844. After the benediction, I'll go to the main door.

  1845. We'll close the benediction.

1846. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God,

1847. Father, Son and Holy Spirit rest upon

1848. and abide with you all now and forevermore.

  1849. Amen.

  1850. Amen.
