  1. Let's turn again to Psalm 34.

  2. I'm not going to read but verses 1 to 8.

  3. ! Just run through them.

  4. I will bless the Lord at all times.

  5. His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

  6. My soul makes its boast in the Lord.

  7. Let the humble hear and be glad.

  8. To verse 8, to taste and see that the Lord is good.

  9. As you know, this is a psalm that has brought a lot of comfort to God's people over the years.

  10. And it came out of a very dark and deep and dangerous experience that David had.

  11. And there's nothing like the deep, dark experiences of life

  12. where we come to learn in God's hand some of the greatest teachings that we can ever get.

  13. And it's always worth listening to Christians who have gone through deep and difficult experiences

  14. because God is a way of using these things to work in our heart, to teach us.

  15. And it's always worth spending time listening to people who have gone through experiences like that.

  16. Now, as we know, David lived on the edge for years.

  17. And it's strange that a man who had been promised the crown and the palace

  18. spent years living in caves and in the mountains.

  19. For David, it wasn't a bed at night.

  20. He often slept just wherever he could find somewhere to sleep

  21. because there was a price in his head.

  22. He was the number one outlaw in the land.

  23. A soul was trying everything to get him and to kill him.

  24. And things had become so difficult and so dangerous for David

  25. that he thought, there's nowhere left for me to hide in this land.

  26. And he said, I'm just going to go into the land of the Philistines.

  27. And talk of jumping out of the pan into the fire

  28. because the land of the Philistines was real enemy territory.

  29. And David, of course, was the one who had...

  30. And he went to Gath and he had killed the great legend, the great champion of Gath, Goliath.

  31. And as it said there that the women had sung afterwards

  32. because David had led that slaughter of the Philistines.

  33. Saul has slain as thousands and David as tens of thousands.

  34. So he was playing with fire going into Gath.

  35. And of course, it wasn't long until he was recognized

  36. and he was brought before the king.

  37. And David realized that his life was in mortal danger.

  38. And we find that David began to act like he was mad.

  39. He pretended that he was a madman.

  40. He was utterly insane.

  41. And he began to drool.

  42. He was letting his spits fall down

  43. and he was scratching at the door.

  44. And his performance was Oscar style.

  45. It was so good that the king was utterly convinced

  46. that this man was insane, that he was a complete lunatic.

  47. And he said to his men,

  48. What on earth have you brought this madman in here?

  49. Get him out of here.

  50. And of course, David manages to get out

  51. and then he goes, he departs.

  52. We're told that he escapes

  53. and goes to hide in the cave of Adullam.

  54. And of course, God was with David all the time.

  55. And David, of course,

  56. when there's so many parts of this psalm

  57. where we can understand exactly where David has come from,

  58. he was this poor man who cried

  59. and God heard and saved.

  60. And David knew that even although he was playing his own part,

  61. that it was ultimately down to God.

  62. Because we're told in the scripture

  63. that the king's heart is in the hand of the Lord

  64. and he'll turn it whichever way he will.

  65. We've always got to remember that.

  66. The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord.

  67. And so David was aware of that.

  68. And so David, he's praying furiously.

  69. He's crying to the Lord.

  70. And David, of course,

  71. manages to escape with God's help.

  72. And that's the background to this psalm.

  73. And David begins by saying,

  74. I will bless the Lord at all times.

  75. His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

  76. Literally at every time,

  77. I will bless the Lord.

  78. And David is really saying,

  79. whatever happens in life,

  80. always remember there's something to praise God for.

  81. And so often,

  82. we can be slow to praise God,

  83. particularly going through the difficult times

  84. and the hard times.

  85. But there's always something to praise God for.

  86. It's like we've heard the story before

  87. of the old man in America who had bought a stake.

  88. And he put the stake down on the ground for a second

  89. because his laces had opened.

  90. So he bent down to tie his shoe.

  91. And as he put the stake on the ground,

  92. a dog came away and,

  93. the dog came along and away with the stake.

  94. And he says,

  95. Oh no,

  96. my stake is gone.

  97. I'll praise the Lord.

  98. And a bystander said,

  99. What on earth are you saying praise the Lord for?

  100. Well, he said,

  101. I'm really sorry,

  102. my stake is gone,

  103. but I'm praising the Lord

  104. because I've still got an appetite.

  105. And there's a lot of people in the world

  106. who would give anything to have an appetite.

  107. So there was a man

  108. who saw that even although

  109. his dinner had gone,

  110. that he still had a reason to praise God.

  111. And we should be like that as well

  112. because sometimes we're slow to do that.

  113. And that's one of the features of David's life

  114. because David was stretched to the very edge so often.

  115. And yet virtually in every psalm,

  116. no matter how harrowing the experience,

  117. we find that David will still praise the Lord.

  118. No wonder he was termed a man after God's own heart.

  119. So I hope that praise characterizes our life.

  120. And then David goes on to say,

  121. My soul makes its boast in the Lord.

  122. Now a lot of people boast in different ways.

  123. Some people boast about what they've achieved

  124. and what they've done

  125. and they like to make it known.

  126. Some people boast in their wealth

  127. and they like to parade it.

  128. Some people boast about their abilities

  129. and their talents.

  130. Some people boast about their family.

  131. Some people even boast about their racial identity.

  132. You've got to ask the question,

  133. Should the Christian boast?

  134. Well, it's very obvious from what David is saying, yes.

  135. But our boasting is not about ourselves,

  136. not about what we are or what we've done.

  137. The boasting should be in the Lord.

  138. You find that a feature of Paul's life.

  139. Paul was always saying that he boasted in Christ Jesus.

  140. He gloried in the cross of Christ.

  141. He never boasted about himself,

  142. but he boasted about what Jesus had done

  143. and Jesus is able to do.

  144. And so should we.

  145. And as Christians,

  146. we love to hear other people speak well of the Lord.

  147. And then David says,

  148. Oh, magnify the Lord with me

  149. and let us exalt his name together.

  150. To magnify, we know,

  151. is to make something bigger,

  152. to make it clearer.

  153. So we say to ourselves,

  154. How can we make God bigger?

  155. Well, obviously we cannot make God bigger than he is.

  156. But very simply,

  157. what it means is that

  158. when you use a magnifying glass,

  159. you're able,

  160. whatever you're looking at,

  161. you're able to see it more clearly.

  162. You're able to get a better understanding

  163. of what you're looking at.

  164. And that's the idea that David has here,

  165. where he's saying,

  166. Oh, magnify the Lord with me.

  167. Let your life display the Lord.

  168. That's basically what he's saying.

  169. Let your life display the Lord

  170. so that people,

  171. as people look at your life,

  172. they will be able to see

  173. the Lord at work in you.

  174. And it's a very challenging thing

  175. because that question we have to ask ourselves,

  176. is that the way that we live?

  177. Are people able,

  178. as they see how we conduct ourselves,

  179. how we,

  180. our lifestyle,

  181. what we say,

  182. what we do,

  183. how we act,

  184. is that glorifying God?

  185. Is it magnifying God?

  186. Because remember,

  187. the Christian is the world's Bible.

  188. Many, many people in the world

  189. will never open the Word of God,

  190. never open a Bible.

  191. And they don't know the first thing

  192. about what the Bible is saying.

  193. So the only way they can take any form

  194. or idea of what Christianity is,

  195. is by looking at the life of the Christian.

  196. And if the life of the Christian

  197. is displaying and magnifying

  198. the Lord,

  199. then that's a great thing.

  200. It will bring people to,

  201. to maybe go to the Bible

  202. and say,

  203. well,

  204. why is this passion,

  205. why does this passion do this?

  206. Why does this passion

  207. not react the way that others do?

  208. Why?

  209. It is because

  210. they are magnifying the Lord.

  211. And then in verse four,

  212. David acknowledges

  213. what God has done.

  214. I sought the Lord

  215. and he answered me

  216. and he delivered me

  217. from all my fears.

  218. Now,

  219. at this particular moment

  220. in David's experience

  221. where he said,

  222. I sought the Lord

  223. and he answered me

  224. and delivered me

  225. from all my fears.

  226. We know that David

  227. was praying furiously,

  228. fervently,

  229. to the Lord.

  230. But it wasn't a matter of

  231. David saying,

  232. well,

  233. I need,

  234. I'm going to pray.

  235. I need to go down

  236. my knees.

  237. I need a wee bit

  238. of a quiet time.

  239. There was none of that.

  240. There was no opportunity

  241. for that.

  242. David was praying

  243. at the very same time

  244. as he was acting

  245. like a madman.

  246. He was crying to the Lord.

  247. He was praying to the Lord.

  248. I'm sure we've all been

  249. in situations like that.

  250. We're in a predicament.

  251. We don't know what to do.

  252. We don't know where to turn.

  253. We're not sure

  254. what we should say.

  255. We're stuck.

  256. And we're in the situation

  257. where you can't sort of say,

  258. oh, hold,

  259. give me a moment

  260. till I have a wee bit of time

  261. and speak to the Lord.

  262. No, we've often done it.

  263. We say,

  264. oh, Lord, help me here.

  265. I really don't know

  266. what to do.

  267. I mean,

  268. this is dire.

  269. Please, Lord,

  270. give me the words

  271. to speak

  272. or give me,

  273. show me what to do

  274. in this situation

  275. because this is,

  276. I'm in,

  277. for as far as I'm concerned,

  278. I'm in a real predicament.

  279. Do you know,

  280. that's real prayer.

  281. That's a prayer of faith.

  282. It doesn't need

  283. to be a long prayer.

  284. But it's genuine.

  285. It's from the heart.

  286. It's an urgent prayer.

  287. Please, Lord,

  288. help me.

  289. And the great thing

  290. we read here is,

  291. I sought the Lord

  292. and he answered me

  293. and he delivered me

  294. from all my fears.

  295. So you see,

  296. the deliverance

  297. was complete.

  298. He delivered

  299. so that if

  300. the sheer terror,

  301. because that's really

  302. what that word fear

  303. means,

  304. he delivered

  305. David from

  306. the situation,

  307. but he also

  308. delivered his mind

  309. from the terror

  310. that he was experiencing.

  311. So you see,

  312. it's a complete

  313. deliverance.

  314. And that's the way

  315. that the Lord

  316. so often works

  317. in our life

  318. and in our heart.

  319. So it was a cry.

  320. And then David says,

  321. You know,

  322. you can't focus

  323. on the Lord

  324. for long

  325. without it becoming

  326. evident in your life.

  327. People will see it.

  328. if you spend time

  329. in prayer

  330. and with the word

  331. yourself

  332. or with a group

  333. of people

  334. and then you come away,

  335. there will be something

  336. of the lingering presence

  337. of God's peace,

  338. of God's love

  339. will be evident

  340. in who you are.

  341. You can't hide it.

  342. It's part of what happens.

  343. It tells us

  344. of how they took note

  345. of the disciples

  346. that they had been

  347. with Jesus.

  348. You remember,

  349. Moses is a classic example.

  350. It's probably

  351. almost an extreme example.

  352. But when he was up

  353. on the mount

  354. with the Lord

  355. for 40 days,

  356. Moses couldn't see it.

  357. But when he came down,

  358. his face was shining

  359. so brightly

  360. that the Israelites

  361. couldn't look on him.

  362. When Moses was going

  363. to speak to them,

  364. they said,

  365. you have to put a veil

  366. over your face

  367. because your face

  368. is shining so bright.

  369. It's like the sun.

  370. We can't look on it.

  371. And that was because

  372. he had been

  373. in the intimate presence

  374. of the Lord

  375. for 40 days.

  376. Now,

  377. it won't be as evident

  378. or as extreme

  379. in a sense

  380. as that

  381. with us.

  382. But something,

  383. something will show.

  384. You can't,

  385. often your work

  386. will display it.

  387. I remember going down

  388. for logs and coal

  389. one time

  390. to my caskals.

  391. Bob Hepburn,

  392. you know,

  393. he's about six foot eight.

  394. I remember saying,

  395. how he did,

  396. I looked up

  397. and all I could see

  398. was the white

  399. of his eyes.

  400. His face was,

  401. everything was black

  402. because he'd been

  403. working in the coal.

  404. And I remember saying,

  405. do you know this,

  406. if you were transported

  407. this very second

  408. into the middle

  409. of Prince's Street,

  410. there's not one

  411. person passing

  412. but would know

  413. what you were working at

  414. because it was so evident,

  415. it was so clear.

  416. And in a sense,

  417. it comes,

  418. you can apply that

  419. spiritually

  420. because there is

  421. something of the

  422. radiance of the Lord

  423. will begin to manifest

  424. itself

  425. in God's people

  426. as they are

  427. in fellowship,

  428. as they are

  429. in close

  430. proximity

  431. with the Lord.

  432. 2 Corinthians

  433. talks about

  434. the shining

  435. radiance

  436. of the Christian.

  437. Classic example

  438. of Stephen

  439. when he was

  440. being stoned.

  441. Remember what

  442. happened there?

  443. Stephen was given

  444. a sight into heaven,

  445. he was given

  446. a vision into heaven

  447. where he saw

  448. the risen Lord

  449. standing.

  450. And he was given

  451. such a sight

  452. of the Lord Jesus,

  453. it tells us

  454. that they saw

  455. his face

  456. was shining

  457. even as they were

  458. raining stones

  459. on him

  460. to kill him.

  461. His persecutor

  462. couldn't help

  463. but notice

  464. his face

  465. was shining.

  466. You see,

  467. so those who

  468. look to him

  469. are radiant

  470. and their faces

  471. shall never

  472. be ashamed.

  473. What a change.

  474. Shame

  475. and embarrassment

  476. is part

  477. and partial

  478. of life.

  479. It's part

  480. of the sin,

  481. it's part

  482. of what sin

  483. is.

  484. And we all

  485. know what it

  486. is to end

  487. up with a red

  488. face of

  489. embarrassment.

  490. Where we're

  491. ashamed

  492. of what we've

  493. said,

  494. ashamed of

  495. what we've

  496. done.

  497. If you're

  498. caught doing

  499. something

  500. that's wrong,

  501. there's always

  502. a look of guilt,

  503. isn't there?

  504. You'll even find

  505. it with a

  506. young person.

  507. You catch him

  508. doing something

  509. that's wrong,

  510. there's that

  511. guilty look.

  512. It's natural,

  513. it's what

  514. happens.

  515. And so shame

  516. has been part

  517. and partial

  518. of our life.

  519. But part of

  520. the wonder

  521. is that Jesus,

  522. part of what

  523. he took on

  524. the cross

  525. was our

  526. shame.

  527. So that he's

  528. transferring

  529. this embarrassment

  530. and shame

  531. which is part

  532. of sin

  533. and giving us

  534. this radiance

  535. in place,

  536. this shining

  537. radiance

  538. that talks

  539. of in

  540. 2 Corinthians.

  541. and then

  542. David says

  543. this,

  544. as we just

  545. mentioned that

  546. earlier,

  547. this poor

  548. man cried

  549. and the

  550. Lord heard

  551. and saved

  552. him out of

  553. all his

  554. distresses.

  555. Well,

  556. David was

  557. the poor

  558. man.

  559. And you

  560. know,

  561. we often

  562. know what

  563. it is to

  564. be poor.

  565. So many

  566. different

  567. situations.

  568. We sometimes

  569. were poor

  570. in spirit,

  571. poor in

  572. prayer.

  573. Have you

  574. sure you've

  575. often felt,

  576. oh man,

  577. I feel so

  578. poor in

  579. prayer.

  580. You look at

  581. your Christian

  582. service and

  583. you say,

  584. oh man,

  585. my Christian

  586. service is

  587. poor.

  588. We feel

  589. poor

  590. spiritually.

  591. We feel

  592. often,

  593. oh man,

  594. I'm a

  595. poor witness.

  596. Sometimes

  597. we have

  598. poor health.

  599. Sometimes

  600. our finances

  601. are poor.

  602. Sometimes

  603. we feel

  604. that we're

  605. maybe a

  606. poor husband

  607. or a

  608. poor wife

  609. or a

  610. poor father

  611. or a

  612. poor mother.

  613. We often

  614. in so

  615. many different

  616. situations

  617. in life,

  618. we feel,

  619. oh,

  620. I'm not

  621. very good

  622. at this.

  623. I feel

  624. poor at

  625. what I'm

  626. doing.

  627. But the

  628. beauty of

  629. it is that

  630. we can

  631. go to

  632. the Lord

  633. and cry

  634. to him

  635. and say,

  636. Lord,

  637. you've

  638. got to

  639. help me.

  640. This is

  641. not what

  642. I want

  643. to be.

  644. And we

  645. go to

  646. our Lord

  647. who is

  648. able to

  649. help us.

  650. And David's

  651. cry wasn't

  652. a vague

  653. cry,

  654. the cry

  655. of a

  656. kind of

  657. despair.

  658. Is there

  659. anybody out

  660. there?

  661. It was a

  662. cry of

  663. faith.

  664. It was

  665. focused upon

  666. the Lord.

  667. He was

  668. crying there.

  669. And do we

  670. appreciate,

  671. I don't

  672. think we

  673. do,

  674. the wonderful

  675. privilege that

  676. we have,

  677. that at

  678. any time

  679. of the

  680. day or

  681. night,

  682. in any

  683. situation,

  684. doesn't

  685. matter what,

  686. we can

  687. go to the

  688. Lord and

  689. say,

  690. Lord,

  691. you've

  692. got to

  693. help me

  694. just now.

  695. Isn't

  696. that amazing?

  697. the Lord

  698. is never

  699. too busy.

  700. He's

  701. never

  702. away.

  703. He's

  704. never

  705. too

  706. involved

  707. with

  708. somebody

  709. else.

  710. He's

  711. always

  712. available.

  713. It's

  714. one of

  715. the most

  716. wonderful

  717. privileges.

  718. And I

  719. don't think

  720. we take

  721. it,

  722. we appreciate

  723. sufficiently

  724. what we

  725. have.

  726. Irrespective

  727. of whatever

  728. we're going

  729. through,

  730. even if

  731. it's of

  732. our own

  733. making,

  734. we can

  735. still go to

  736. the Lord

  737. and say,

  738. Lord,

  739. you've

  740. got to

  741. help me

  742. just now.

  743. I'm

  744. stuck,

  745. I'm

  746. struggling.

  747. I'm

  748. not in

  749. a good

  750. place,

  751. Lord.

  752. Help,

  753. help,

  754. help.

  755. That's

  756. a cry

  757. of faith.

  758. It's

  759. real.

  760. That's

  761. the kind

  762. of prayer

  763. that the

  764. Lord

  765. hears.

  766. And

  767. as the

  768. hymn

  769. writer said,

  770. what a

  771. friend we

  772. have in

  773. Jesus.

  774. If you're

  775. here tonight

  776. and you

  777. have to

  778. say,

  779. well,

  780. I have

  781. to

  782. confess,

  783. I know

  784. all about

  785. Jesus,

  786. or I

  787. know an

  788. awful lot

  789. about

  790. Jesus,

  791. but I

  792. haven't

  793. come to

  794. this place

  795. yet where

  796. what you're

  797. saying,

  798. some of

  799. it,

  800. yeah,

  801. I'm

  802. hearing,

  803. but I

  804. can't

  805. follow it.

  806. Well,

  807. it's

  808. time you

  809. did.

  810. You have

  811. no idea

  812. what you're

  813. missing.

  814. You have

  815. no idea

  816. what you're

  817. losing out

  818. on,

  819. because it's

  820. a fragile

  821. life,

  822. a difficult

  823. life.

  824. Having the

  825. Lord makes

  826. all the

  827. difference in

  828. the world.

  829. So David's

  830. cry,

  831. it was a

  832. cry.

  833. it was

  834. literally

  835. a cry,

  836. this poor

  837. man cried.

  838. David

  839. didn't make

  840. a prayer

  841. which was

  842. full of

  843. great

  844. theological

  845. terms.

  846. He didn't

  847. make a

  848. prayer that

  849. was so

  850. eloquent

  851. and a

  852. beautiful

  853. flow of

  854. words.

  855. It was

  856. just a

  857. cry.

  858. Lord,

  859. help me,

  860. I'm a

  861. dead man

  862. unless you

  863. help me.

  864. It was a

  865. desperate

  866. cry.

  867. And that's

  868. a prayer of

  869. faith that

  870. the Lord

  871. will answer.

  872. You see,

  873. the Pharisee,

  874. and remember

  875. the Pharisee

  876. and the

  877. publican,

  878. the Pharisee,

  879. he had a

  880. very eloquent

  881. prayer.

  882. He was

  883. talking mostly

  884. about himself.

  885. Very eloquent.

  886. The publican,

  887. he had nothing

  888. really,

  889. he just felt

  890. a hopeless,

  891. poor sinner.

  892. All he could

  893. say was,

  894. Lord,

  895. have mercy

  896. on me.

  897. Lord,

  898. be merciful

  899. to me,

  900. a sinner.

  901. That's all

  902. he had.

  903. But it

  904. was more

  905. than enough

  906. because he

  907. was the

  908. one who

  909. went to

  910. his house

  911. justified.

  912. He was

  913. the one

  914. that the

  915. Lord had

  916. heard.

  917. So the

  918. cry is

  919. an absolutely

  920. essential

  921. thing.

  922. A baby

  923. is never

  924. taught to

  925. cry.

  926. It's natural

  927. to a baby,

  928. isn't it?

  929. A baby

  930. cries.

  931. Cries when

  932. it's hungry.

  933. A baby

  934. cries when

  935. she's thirsty.

  936. A baby

  937. cries when

  938. feeling dirty,

  939. needing change.

  940. A baby

  941. cries when

  942. babies

  943. sore.

  944. So many

  945. things.

  946. Nobody

  947. teaches.

  948. It's

  949. natural.

  950. So it

  951. is for

  952. the

  953. Christian.

  954. Because the

  955. moment that

  956. God begins

  957. to work in

  958. your heart,

  959. the moment

  960. the journey

  961. of faith

  962. begins,

  963. you and

  964. I are

  965. spiritual

  966. babies.

  967. And it's

  968. natural for

  969. us to

  970. cry.

  971. It's

  972. part and

  973. partial of

  974. your

  975. Christian

  976. life.

  977. You start

  978. crying the

  979. moment that

  980. God begins

  981. to work in

  982. your heart.

  983. And it's

  984. part,

  985. something that

  986. goes on all

  987. throughout our

  988. life.

  989. And then it

  990. tells us that

  991. the angel of

  992. the Lord

  993. encamps

  994. round those

  995. who fear

  996. him and

  997. delivers them.

  998. Now,

  999. when it

  1000. says here

  1001. the angel

  1002. of the

  1003. Lord,

  1004. in a sense

  1005. it could

  1006. talk of

  1007. two things.

  1008. We know

  1009. that the

  1010. heirs of

  1011. salvation,

  1012. that the

  1013. angels are

  1014. ministering

  1015. spirits to

  1016. the heirs of

  1017. salvation.

  1018. So that if

  1019. you're a

  1020. believer,

  1021. you have

  1022. the angels

  1023. ministering to

  1024. you.

  1025. And how

  1026. little we

  1027. understand that

  1028. and how

  1029. little we

  1030. know.

  1031. And I'm

  1032. sure many

  1033. a time we

  1034. have been

  1035. protected and

  1036. kept and

  1037. delivered because

  1038. of these

  1039. ministering

  1040. spirits.

  1041. But the

  1042. angel of

  1043. the Lord,

  1044. as it

  1045. says here,

  1046. the angel of

  1047. the Lord is

  1048. sometimes spoken

  1049. of as the

  1050. angel of

  1051. the covenant,

  1052. the Lord

  1053. Jesus Christ.

  1054. And it

  1055. could actually

  1056. mean both

  1057. because both

  1058. are true.

  1059. That David

  1060. is talking

  1061. here and

  1062. he's saying

  1063. the angel

  1064. of the

  1065. Lord encamps

  1066. round those

  1067. who fear

  1068. the Lord.

  1069. So you

  1070. have the

  1071. protection

  1072. of the

  1073. Lord,

  1074. his presence

  1075. in camping,

  1076. which talks

  1077. of nearness,

  1078. and you have

  1079. the ministering

  1080. spirits,

  1081. round,

  1082. front,

  1083. back,

  1084. side.

  1085. You

  1086. couldn't be

  1087. more protected.

  1088. There isn't

  1089. anybody in

  1090. the world

  1091. who might

  1092. have the

  1093. best trained

  1094. SAS

  1095. bodyguards

  1096. giving a

  1097. protection,

  1098. anything near

  1099. the protection

  1100. that the

  1101. Christian has.

  1102. Protection of

  1103. soul and

  1104. protection of

  1105. body by

  1106. the Lord.

  1107. And the

  1108. very idea

  1109. that he

  1110. encamps

  1111. means that

  1112. it's permanent.

  1113. When you

  1114. camp down

  1115. and camp

  1116. round,

  1117. it means

  1118. this is

  1119. talking about

  1120. we're here

  1121. for the

  1122. long term.

  1123. It's not

  1124. just a

  1125. fleeting

  1126. presence.

  1127. It's a

  1128. permanent

  1129. presence.

  1130. What a

  1131. privilege we

  1132. have.

  1133. See,

  1134. so often we

  1135. don't think

  1136. about these

  1137. things that

  1138. this is what

  1139. we have.

  1140. The

  1141. presence of

  1142. the Lord

  1143. encamp

  1144. round us.

  1145. it's a

  1146. wonderful

  1147. thing.

  1148. And then

  1149. finally in

  1150. verse 8,

  1151. David says,

  1152. taste and

  1153. see that

  1154. the Lord

  1155. is good.

  1156. And I

  1157. love the

  1158. way that

  1159. David says

  1160. this.

  1161. Now David

  1162. has experienced

  1163. all throughout

  1164. his life

  1165. that the

  1166. Lord is

  1167. good.

  1168. He's proved

  1169. it continually.

  1170. And he

  1171. wants

  1172. everybody

  1173. else to

  1174. discover just

  1175. how wonderful

  1176. that the

  1177. Lord is.

  1178. and when

  1179. you become

  1180. a Christian,

  1181. you don't

  1182. become a

  1183. secret

  1184. Christian.

  1185. You might

  1186. be a

  1187. secret

  1188. Christian for

  1189. a little

  1190. while,

  1191. but it's

  1192. very hard

  1193. to remain

  1194. a secret

  1195. Christian.

  1196. Because part

  1197. of what a

  1198. Christian wants

  1199. to do is

  1200. to tell

  1201. others.

  1202. You want

  1203. to share.

  1204. You want

  1205. others to

  1206. know,

  1207. others to

  1208. experience

  1209. what you've

  1210. experienced.

  1211. You want

  1212. that other

  1213. people will

  1214. come to

  1215. faith in

  1216. the way

  1217. that you've

  1218. come to

  1219. faith.

  1220. It's like

  1221. if you,

  1222. supposing you

  1223. were to

  1224. discover some

  1225. amazing cure

  1226. for a fatal

  1227. illness.

  1228. And this

  1229. cure not

  1230. only cured

  1231. you of the

  1232. illness,

  1233. but brought

  1234. a sense of

  1235. well-being

  1236. into life.

  1237. You wouldn't

  1238. keep that

  1239. hidden away.

  1240. You would

  1241. want everybody

  1242. to know.

  1243. And so it

  1244. is when we

  1245. become Christians

  1246. that we want

  1247. to share,

  1248. we want to

  1249. tell people

  1250. there is

  1251. this Jesus.

  1252. And if

  1253. you've never

  1254. discovered how

  1255. good the

  1256. Lord is,

  1257. I would

  1258. ask you

  1259. tonight to

  1260. taste.

  1261. Taste,

  1262. taste for

  1263. yourself.

  1264. You see,

  1265. it's the

  1266. ultimate

  1267. blessing.

  1268. To reject

  1269. Jesus is

  1270. to deprive

  1271. yourself of

  1272. the greatest

  1273. good.

  1274. You know,

  1275. this is part

  1276. of the

  1277. absolute

  1278. madness of

  1279. our nation,

  1280. temptation is

  1281. this determination

  1282. to try to

  1283. silence the

  1284. voice of

  1285. the Christian.

  1286. The only

  1287. voice that

  1288. is bringing

  1289. hope, that

  1290. is bringing

  1291. meaning, that

  1292. could bring

  1293. well-being,

  1294. that could

  1295. bring hope.

  1296. And yet they

  1297. say we don't

  1298. want to hear

  1299. that voice,

  1300. God silence

  1301. that voice.

  1302. You know,

  1303. nothing shows

  1304. clearer that

  1305. hell is an

  1306. overdrive in

  1307. its attempt to

  1308. destroy us

  1309. as a nation.

  1310. And we need

  1311. to pray that

  1312. the Lord will

  1313. indeed have

  1314. mercy upon

  1315. us.

  1316. But it's the

  1317. ultimate

  1318. blessing.

  1319. It's not only

  1320. a blessing for

  1321. life, it's a

  1322. blessing for

  1323. eternity.

  1324. And also

  1325. taste and

  1326. see is a

  1327. command, it's

  1328. not an

  1329. option.

  1330. The Lord is

  1331. saying to

  1332. you tonight,

  1333. through his

  1334. word, oh

  1335. taste and

  1336. see that the

  1337. Lord is

  1338. good.

  1339. Some people

  1340. say, well,

  1341. if I could

  1342. see that the

  1343. Lord is

  1344. good, then

  1345. I would

  1346. taste.

  1347. Well, let's

  1348. put in the

  1349. cart before

  1350. the horse.

  1351. In order to

  1352. see how

  1353. good the

  1354. Lord is,

  1355. you have to

  1356. taste him

  1357. first.

  1358. You have to

  1359. receive him.

  1360. You have to

  1361. accept him.

  1362. You have to

  1363. come, fall

  1364. down before

  1365. him.

  1366. You've got to

  1367. say, Lord,

  1368. open my

  1369. heart.

  1370. Help me to

  1371. discover.

  1372. Help me to

  1373. believe.

  1374. believe.

  1375. Because, you

  1376. know, as we

  1377. said, it's a

  1378. greatest blessing

  1379. and it

  1380. brings a

  1381. guarantee.

  1382. There's a lot

  1383. of guarantees

  1384. in life.

  1385. Sometimes you'll

  1386. get a year

  1387. guarantee, a

  1388. five-year

  1389. guarantee, a

  1390. ten-year

  1391. guarantee.

  1392. Sometimes you'll

  1393. even get a

  1394. lifetime

  1395. guarantee.

  1396. Well, the

  1397. guarantee here,

  1398. when you come to

  1399. taste and to

  1400. see that the

  1401. Lord is good,

  1402. good, it's

  1403. not only

  1404. lifetime, it's

  1405. an eternal

  1406. guarantee.

  1407. The only

  1408. eternal guarantee

  1409. that you can be

  1410. given in this

  1411. world.

  1412. So I pray

  1413. tonight that

  1414. you will all,

  1415. if you haven't

  1416. already, come

  1417. to taste and

  1418. to see that

  1419. the Lord is

  1420. good.

  1421. Let us pray.

  1422. O Lord,

  1433. revealed so

  1434. much of

  1435. yourself in

  1436. your truth.

  1437. And we pray

  1438. that we may

  1439. have an

  1440. appetite for

  1441. your truth.

  1442. And we pray

  1443. that your

  1444. word may have

  1445. a greater

  1446. place in

  1447. our life,

  1448. year by

  1449. year.

  1457. that we

  1458. might be

  1460. !

  1461. before all

  1462. people.

  1463. Help us

  1464. in and take

  1465. us all to

  1466. our homes

  1467. and safety.
