  1. James chapter 1 and at verse 12.

    James 1 chapter mention

  2. And so on.

  3. I want to return to looking at this first chapter in the letter of James.

  4. And we have noticed that the first part of this letter, James, is is dealing with how we need to learn spiritual wholeness and health and well-being in the best sense of the of the terms.

  5. That is that we have a walking with the Lord Jesus, which is in commune with him and walking to learn from him and to thereby grow up in faith.

  6. And we saw from verse 2 to verse 4, the way in which spiritual maturity comes by remaining steadfast in our trials.

  7. And we notice the ways in which we all have our different trials, that God gives trials to us in order to build us up on the faith.

  8. And we grow up as we remain steadfast in these trials.

  9. And we saw from verse 5 down to verse number 8, the way in which faith responds to our trials.

  10. And that is that we respond in prayer and we seek the wisdom that comes from God alone.

  11. And we notice that the wisdom that comes from God is a wisdom that enables us to serve God.

  12. It enables us to live the right kind of life.

  13. It enables us to make right judgments.

  14. And it even enables us to govern our own lives and for the church to govern itself.

  15. Praying for wisdom in order to associate with our trials and to learn from them.

  16. And at verse number 12, we see the way in which the people are once more encouraged in their trials and encourage that if they remain steadfast, then they will receive the crown of life.

  17. And from verse 12 to verse 13, James changes his focus.

  18. And he does so by moving from trials to think of temptation.

  19. And in verse 13 down to verse number 15, this evening, we want to look at what James has to say and to think of the trial of faith and temptation to sin.

  20. And we might be saying, why should we focus on sin?

  21. And perhaps there are two simple reasons for that.

  22. Because sin is something that we have to deal with ourselves.

  23. And secondly, our sin is what God does deal with.

  24. And the more we understand what sin means and the more we understand why God deals with us in the way that he does,

  25. then that helps us on our journey to spiritual or Christian maturity.

  26. And so we have the trial of faith and the temptation to sin.

  27. Well, I notice first of all, that there is a pastoral concern.

  28. And the pastoral concern, we have brought to our attention in that verse 13,

  29. let no one say when he is tempted, I am being tempted by God.

  30. He introduces the idea of temptation.

  31. The word translated temptation here is from the same word group as the word translated testing earlier.

  32. And there is that kind of double meaning in the terms.

  33. And James is now focusing on the second interpretation of the term.

  34. That is temptation.

  35. When things cross our path and things work in our experience,

  36. that that draws us away temptation,

  37. which is the design to destroy our faith,

  38. to lead us into sin,

  39. and therefore lead us into separation from God.

  40. And when we think of temptation in that way,

  41. it reminds us of the importance of understanding something about the way in which temptation works in our lives.

  42. Its goal is, its purpose is to sever us from God and for us to lose the assurance of our faith.

  43. The pastoral concern here is that there are those who are blaming God for their temptation.

  44. Let no one say when he is tempted,

  45. I am being tempted by God.

  46. Now perhaps we may say,

  47. surely we don't do that.

  48. But the reality is that we do that more often than we think.

  49. In this letter here,

  50. there are those who are facing poverty.

  51. There are those who are rich.

  52. There are challenges associated with poverty and with riches.

  53. We may think of financial difficulty,

  54. causing us to question God's providence.

  55. We're blaming God for bringing us into financial difficulty.

  56. When we are facing personal illness,

  57. we begin to question the goodness of God and even the love of God.

  58. When we see,

  59. as we saw in Psalm 73,

  60. the wicked prospering and the people of God suffering,

  61. we may question the justice of God and blame God.

  62. Why is God allowing this to happen?

  63. In so many parts of life,

  64. we blame God for the situations that we have arrived in.

  65. When we suffer personal bereavement,

  66. and we blame God for dealing with us so sorely,

  67. we question the love of God.

  68. And tonight,

  69. if we have faith,

  70. all of us at one time or another,

  71. if we are honest with ourselves,

  72. we'll have blamed God,

  73. questioned God for what he is doing.

  74. And at the very beginning of the Bible,

  75. we see that blame culture emerging in the very first sin,

  76. where Adam blames God for giving a wife,

  77. Eve,

  78. who led him into the transgression.

  79. And that blame culture follows our own experience

  80. and our relation with God time after time.

  81. And one of the writers commenting on this

  82. makes the point that so often,

  83. when we sin,

  84. we blame God in order to relieve our own personal guilt.

  85. Instead of going to God with our sin

  86. and confessing our sin,

  87. if we can find some way of blaming God

  88. in the midst of our sin,

  89. then it tends to ease our guilt.

  90. A pastoral concern.

  91. Do you think that's a concern

  92. that includes your own life,

  93. your own relationship with God?

  94. Does this speak into your heart

  95. as it speaks into my heart this evening,

  96. forcing us to think

  97. of a response to our sin,

  98. of a response to situations

  99. where we actually blame God?

  100. And James is very quick

  101. to make it clear

  102. that because of God's character

  103. that cannot happen.

  104. And in God's activity

  105. that will never happen.

  106. For God cannot be tempted with evil.

  107. He is immune to that sense

  108. of being tempted himself.

  109. It just cannot happen

  110. because of the God that he is

  111. in all of his perfection

  112. and in all of his holiness.

  113. He cannot be tempted by sin.

  114. It simply does not happen.

  115. Sin is apparent to him.

  116. And because of his relationship

  117. with his people,

  118. neither is he engaged

  119. in tempting them.

  120. And of course,

  121. that's,

  122. that leaves us

  123. with a mystery.

  124. A mystery that does not

  125. lead us to blame God,

  126. but it does

  127. lead us to think

  128. about the mystery

  129. of our providence.

  130. Where providence takes us

  131. to different places.

  132. and in these very places

  133. that we face temptation.

  134. And the God who is

  135. the God of our providence

  136. still cannot be blamed

  137. for our temptation.

  138. The pastoral concern.

  139. Important for us to,

  140. to consider

  141. temptation

  142. and to be on our guard

  143. and to always ensure

  144. that temptation

  145. does not ever

  146. have its source

  147. in the reality of God.

  148. It simply cannot

  149. happen in that way.

  150. The pastoral concern.

  151. Secondly,

  152. then we see

  153. that there's a process.

  154. If that's not the source

  155. of our temptation,

  156. what is the source?

  157. The process.

  158. We see in a version number 14,

  159. but each person is tempted

  160. when he is lured

  161. and deticed

  162. by his own desire.

  163. Our personal desire.

  164. The reality of it

  165. is the source

  166. of our temptation.

  167. And that,

  168. and the desire,

  169. the way in which

  170. James speaks of it

  171. and the way in which

  172. the New Testament

  173. speaks of it,

  174. it's something that

  175. speaks deep

  176. into our experience.

  177. It's the longing

  178. that we have

  179. and the impulses

  180. of our hearts

  181. towards certain things.

  182. The desire that we have

  183. in our hearts

  184. towards satisfaction.

  185. And that desire

  186. in our hearts

  187. is something

  188. that is a power

  189. which draws us

  190. to this object

  191. in which we will

  192. have satisfaction.

  193. and such is the desire

  194. that we suffer pain

  195. and we feel a pain

  196. if we cannot have

  197. the satisfaction

  198. that we can have

  199. by embracing the object.

  200. It is something

  201. that's powerful

  202. within us,

  203. deeply rooted

  204. in our being.

  205. It is the tendency

  206. to choose the things

  207. that are all about

  208. ourselves

  209. and not about God.

  210. Indeed,

  211. it is the tendency

  212. to choose

  213. the very things

  214. that God has

  215. prohibited.

  216. Temptation

  217. from our desire.

  218. We read Peter

  219. in 1 Peter 2

  220. speaking about

  221. the way in which

  222. we are to abstain

  223. from the passions

  224. of the flesh.

  225. It's like a powerful

  226. energy that builds

  227. up inside of us

  228. that leads us

  229. to desire the things

  230. that will satisfy

  231. the flesh

  232. and that will

  233. separate us

  234. from God.

  235. And while

  236. the New Testament

  237. speaks of

  238. that desire,

  239. we understand

  240. the diversity

  241. of individual

  242. experience.

  243. we understand

  244. tonight that

  245. the things

  246. that are a powerful

  247. temptation to you

  248. because of your

  249. disposition

  250. might not cause me

  251. even to look

  252. at these very things.

  253. And all of us

  254. tonight are made

  255. in such a way

  256. in the diversity

  257. of our disposition

  258. as God has made us

  259. that there

  260. we find ourselves

  261. drawn to one thing

  262. and not drawn

  263. to another thing.

  264. tonight we may

  265. well be here

  266. and in the

  267. sacred of our hearts

  268. tempted by the

  269. things that

  270. are attractive

  271. to ourselves

  272. and others

  273. tempted by things

  274. that are attractive

  275. to them

  276. and that would

  277. be unattractive

  278. to you.

  279. and whilst we

  280. understand that

  281. we all have

  282. the same sinful

  283. heart

  284. we understand

  285. the diversity

  286. of experience

  287. your attractions

  288. won't be mine

  289. and your attractions

  290. won't be those

  291. of the person

  292. next to you.

  293. and that's why

  294. in circumstances

  295. circumstances

  296. in temptation

  297. are tailored

  298. to suit

  299. your personal

  300. disposition

  301. and it's

  302. it's wonderful

  303. and mysterious

  304. and awesome

  305. in so many ways

  306. the way in which

  307. the devil works

  308. and the way in which

  309. we find ourselves

  310. in the very

  311. circumstances

  312. that are tailored

  313. to our individual

  314. passions

  315. and to our

  316. individual desires.

  317. Our temptations

  318. arise from

  319. the reality

  320. of the sinful

  321. disposition

  322. of our sinful

  323. hearts

  324. the power of

  325. our passions

  326. and because

  327. of that

  328. powerful

  329. passion

  330. of our hearts

  331. the process

  332. is explained

  333. to us here

  334. it's

  335. if

  336. there are fishermen

  337. here

  338. I'm sure

  339. there are

  340. explained to us

  341. a process

  342. here

  343. which

  344. highlights

  345. how temptation

  346. works

  347. but each

  348. person

  349. is tempted

  350. when he is

  351. lured

  352. and

  353. enticed

  354. there are two

  355. things going on

  356. there is

  357. there is the

  358. enticement

  359. and there is

  360. the attachment

  361. and because

  362. of

  363. of our

  364. sinful

  365. disposition

  366. we see

  367. first of all

  368. that we

  369. are lured

  370. we're

  371. drawn

  372. away

  373. something

  374. attractive

  375. is presented

  376. to us

  377. that the

  378. fisherman

  379. will

  380. bait his

  381. hook

  382. or the

  383. fisherman

  384. will use

  385. a particular

  386. kind of

  387. fly

  388. he will do

  389. that in

  390. order to

  391. attract

  392. and to

  393. bring

  394. the fish

  395. out of its

  396. hiding place

  397. and to

  398. bring it

  399. and for

  400. it to be

  401. drawn and

  402. attracted

  403. to the

  404. very thing

  405. that's on

  406. that

  407. hook

  408. there is

  409. that

  410. enticement

  411. and it

  412. is

  413. an

  414. enticement

  415. that is

  416. powerful

  417. in the

  418. sense

  419. that we

  420. must have

  421. it

  422. it's

  423. delicious

  424. bait

  425. and we

  426. must have

  427. it

  428. and we

  429. think of

  430. how that

  431. works

  432. and we

  433. think of

  434. how it

  435. works

  436. in our

  437. personal

  438. experience

  439. and that

  440. process

  441. through which

  442. the devil

  443. will keep

  444. presenting

  445. the same

  446. thing to

  447. our minds

  448. in order

  449. to draw

  450. us away

  451. and there

  452. are two

  453. graphs that

  454. we can

  455. think of

  456. and the

  457. more the

  458. devil

  459. persists

  460. in seeking

  461. to draw

  462. us away

  463. the more

  464. our

  465. resistance

  466. will

  467. diminish

  468. and as

  469. our

  470. resistance

  471. diminish

  472. the more

  473. the bait

  474. becomes

  475. attractive

  476. until we

  477. reach the

  478. point

  479. where we're

  480. attached

  481. and that's

  482. what

  483. what James

  484. is saying

  485. here

  486. lured

  487. and

  488. enticed

  489. there is

  490. the sense

  491. of

  492. being

  493. dragged

  494. away

  495. that's

  496. what the

  497. word

  498. means

  499. that's

  500. what the

  501. fisherman

  502. does

  503. let me

  504. get my

  505. fish

  506. on the

  507. hook

  508. and

  509. no matter

  510. how much

  511. it struggles

  512. it's

  513. pulling my

  514. line in

  515. and do it

  516. professionally

  517. understanding

  518. what's on

  519. the hook

  520. in order

  521. to ensure

  522. that the

  523. fish is

  524. landed

  525. and that's

  526. how temptation

  527. works

  528. once we're

  529. enticed

  530. once we

  531. see it

  532. as the

  533. must-have

  534. thing

  535. then we

  536. grasp it

  537. and we're

  538. caught

  539. and we're

  540. carried away

  541. and

  542. carried away

  543. not like the

  544. struggling

  545. fish

  546. but

  547. carried away

  548. because we

  549. have now

  550. come to

  551. the point

  552. where we

  553. are willing

  554. to embrace

  555. the very

  556. thing that

  557. God

  558. prohibits

  559. and the

  560. very thing

  561. that in

  562. the first

  563. place we

  564. knew

  565. would affect

  566. our relationship

  567. with God

  568. and would

  569. bring about

  570. some kind

  571. of severance

  572. in that

  573. relationship

  574. there is

  575. that

  576. process

  577. the process

  578. described by

  579. one of the

  580. writers in

  581. this way

  582. there's the

  583. personal struggle

  584. with evil

  585. desire

  586. it's not

  587. usually one

  588. of confrontation

  589. with the

  590. devil

  591. but rather

  592. a confrontation

  593. with their

  594. own worst

  595. enemy

  596. namely

  597. our very

  598. selves

  599. that's where

  600. temptation

  601. works

  602. the pain

  603. of temptation

  604. is a

  605. self

  606. inflicted

  607. attack

  608. it's our

  609. fault

  610. it comes

  611. from the

  612. reality of

  613. who we

  614. are

  615. and this

  616. this is the

  617. sense of

  618. being dragged

  619. away

  620. our own

  621. desires

  622. are like

  623. a marauding

  624. beast

  625. that would

  626. soon

  627. consume

  628. us

  629. the process

  630. do we

  631. tonight

  632. understand

  633. how the

  634. bible

  635. describes

  636. temptation

  637. that leads

  638. us to

  639. sin

  640. can we

  641. allow the

  642. bible

  643. to give

  644. us that

  645. background

  646. and to

  647. give to us

  648. the image

  649. into which

  650. we can

  651. fit our

  652. experience

  653. and realise

  654. even now

  655. or tonight

  656. or tomorrow

  657. that's

  658. temptation

  659. and I'm

  660. attracted to

  661. it

  662. and I have

  663. to be

  664. careful

  665. that the

  666. hook of

  667. temptation

  668. that I don't

  669. bite it

  670. and take the

  671. bait

  672. I need to

  673. appreciate

  674. what's happening

  675. around me

  676. in the realm

  677. of my faith

  678. and in the realm

  679. of my relationship

  680. with God

  681. this is the

  682. biggest threat

  683. and the biggest

  684. threat as the

  685. writer said

  686. it's not the

  687. devil himself

  688. the biggest

  689. threat and

  690. danger

  691. is your

  692. sinful heart

  693. and mine

  694. the process

  695. and thirdly

  696. there is a

  697. product

  698. then decide

  699. when it has

  700. conceived

  701. gives birth

  702. to sin

  703. and sin

  704. when it is

  705. fully grown

  706. brings forth

  707. death

  708. he changes

  709. the metaphor

  710. from the

  711. fishing metaphor

  712. and uses

  713. the metaphor

  714. of conception

  715. and of birth

  716. and as soon

  717. as I'm

  718. attached to

  719. the temptation

  720. then

  721. sin has been

  722. conceived

  723. it's hidden

  724. it's like

  725. the conception

  726. of the child

  727. in the mother's

  728. womb

  729. it's hidden

  730. but something

  731. new

  732. a new

  733. person

  734. has been

  735. created

  736. and it's now

  737. in my Christian

  738. experience

  739. because of the

  740. way in which

  741. this process

  742. has led me

  743. to embrace

  744. the temptation

  745. because of that

  746. something new

  747. has taken

  748. place

  749. in my

  750. relationship

  751. with God

  752. there is the

  753. beginning

  754. of the very

  755. thing

  756. that harms

  757. my relationship

  758. with God

  759. the conception

  760. and once

  761. the conception

  762. happens

  763. and we

  764. understand

  765. that naturally

  766. as conception

  767. happens

  768. it happens

  769. where there is

  770. a loving embrace

  771. where there is

  772. a relationship

  773. where there is

  774. a bond

  775. and that's

  776. what happens

  777. with sin

  778. as I embrace

  779. it

  780. there's a bond

  781. there's a relationship

  782. and my attention

  783. and my desires

  784. and my heart

  785. is given over

  786. to that sin

  787. sin is conceived

  788. and sin

  789. when it is

  790. fully grown

  791. brings

  792. forth death

  793. the child

  794. conceived

  795. will be born

  796. into

  797. the visible

  798. world

  799. at the

  800. appropriate

  801. time

  802. and there is

  803. that process

  804. that James

  805. describes here

  806. that the same

  807. thing happens

  808. with my sin

  809. it's conceived

  810. in my heart

  811. and then

  812. it will become

  813. visible

  814. in the first

  815. place

  816. in my relationship

  817. with God

  818. it brings forth

  819. death

  820. I begin to

  821. realize

  822. now that

  823. the very thing

  824. that attracted

  825. me

  826. that I embraced

  827. with all of my

  828. heart

  829. has affected

  830. the relationship

  831. where my heart

  832. should be

  833. exclusively

  834. it's affected

  835. my devotion

  836. to my

  837. savior

  838. and it's

  839. brought about

  840. a change

  841. in that

  842. relationship

  843. and of course

  844. it doesn't

  845. bring that

  846. relationship

  847. to an end

  848. but there is

  849. a difference

  850. between the

  851. status of

  852. that relationship

  853. and the

  854. experience

  855. and the

  856. enjoyment

  857. of that

  858. relationship

  859. and as

  860. soon as

  861. conceived

  862. it brings

  863. forth death

  864. in the sense

  865. that in my

  866. experience

  867. I lose

  868. every sense

  869. of spiritual

  870. well-being

  871. I lose

  872. every sense

  873. of the

  874. presence of

  875. God with

  876. me

  877. and I'm

  878. alert

  879. immediately

  880. to the

  881. fact

  882. that sin

  883. has affected

  884. my relationship

  885. with God

  886. think of

  887. David

  888. and Bathsheba

  889. David

  890. when other

  891. kings were

  892. at war

  893. his guard

  894. was down

  895. David

  896. saw

  897. Bathsheba

  898. David

  899. desired

  900. Bathsheba

  901. David

  902. acted

  903. and brought

  904. Bathsheba

  905. to himself

  906. and David

  907. committed

  908. adultery

  909. there was

  910. that process

  911. through which

  912. because his

  913. guard was

  914. down

  915. he embraced

  916. what God

  917. was forbidding

  918. him

  919. and he took

  920. someone else's

  921. wife

  922. and read

  923. of David's

  924. experience

  925. in Psalm

  926. 32

  927. he had

  928. lost his

  929. strength

  930. his

  931. relationship

  932. with God

  933. was turned

  934. upside down

  935. Bathsheba

  936. was there

  937. Uriah

  938. was to be

  939. dealt

  940. with

  941. the problems

  942. mounted more

  943. and more

  944. all because

  945. he embraced

  946. the temptation

  947. he endured

  948. the pain

  949. his heart

  950. his experience

  951. was like

  952. the drought

  953. of summer

  954. he had

  955. lost every

  956. sense of

  957. living with

  958. God

  959. and living

  960. for God

  961. that's the

  962. death

  963. that it

  964. brings

  965. about

  966. and that's

  967. the death

  968. it brings

  969. about

  970. for you

  971. and for

  972. me

  973. and tonight

  974. it may be

  975. the case

  976. that in

  977. someone's

  978. heart

  979. something

  980. has gone

  981. wrong

  982. and someone's

  983. heart

  984. tonight

  985. may be

  986. like

  987. David's

  988. heart

  989. and maybe

  990. feeling

  991. the pain

  992. of that

  993. disruption

  994. in

  995. your

  996. relationship

  997. with the

  998. Lord Jesus

  999. and your

  1000. sense of

  1001. experiencing

  1002. his love

  1003. and grace

  1004. has gone

  1005. it's

  1006. evaporated

  1007. your sin

  1008. has broken

  1009. has taken

  1010. that away

  1011. your sin

  1012. has brought

  1013. your heart

  1014. to be like

  1015. a desert

  1016. where there is

  1017. no water

  1018. and where there's

  1019. no sense of

  1020. the goodness

  1021. of God

  1022. and tonight

  1023. as we close

  1024. we

  1025. remind

  1026. ourselves

  1027. of the

  1028. importance

  1029. of being

  1030. on our

  1031. guard

  1032. Paul

  1033. prays for the

  1034. Philippians

  1035. in chapter 4

  1036. that the

  1037. peace of

  1038. God

  1039. would guard

  1040. your hearts

  1041. and minds

  1042. we depend

  1043. and trust

  1044. in God

  1045. through prayer

  1046. and the wisdom

  1047. that comes

  1048. through prayer

  1049. we depend

  1050. on God

  1051. for him

  1052. to guard

  1053. our hearts

  1054. and minds

  1055. there may be

  1056. situations

  1057. where we

  1058. can guard

  1059. each other

  1060. in certain

  1061. circumstances

  1062. and we

  1063. are Job

  1064. in Job

    Job 31 chapter mention

  1065. chapter 31

  1066. I made

  1067. a covenant

  1068. with my

  1069. eyes

  1070. we need

  1071. to ensure

  1072. that we

  1073. stop looking

  1074. at the

  1075. things

  1076. that we

  1077. know

  1078. lead us

  1079. into

  1080. temptation

  1081. but Jesus

  1082. of course

  1083. reminds us

  1084. as he

  1085. reminded the

  1086. disciples

  1087. that it is

  1088. what comes

  1089. from the

  1090. heart

  1091. that's what

  1092. defiles a

  1093. person

  1094. even

  1095. we may

  1096. shut

  1097. our eyes

  1098. and not

  1099. look at

  1100. anything

  1101. but it

  1102. doesn't

  1103. take away

  1104. the reality

  1105. of the

  1106. power

  1107. of our

  1108. lusts

  1109. and of

  1110. our

  1111. passion

  1112. that work

  1113. away

  1114. daily in

  1115. our

  1116. experience

  1117. as Paul

  1118. himself

  1119. discovered

  1120. and as we

  1121. do

  1122. discover

  1123. ourselves

  1124. we guard

  1125. our hearts

  1126. and it's

  1127. worth quoting

  1128. as we

  1129. close the

  1130. words of

  1131. Ralph Waldo

  1132. Emerson

  1133. who was a

  1134. 19th century

  1135. philosopher

  1136. when he said

  1137. this

  1138. sow a

  1139. thought

  1140. and you

  1141. reap an

  1142. action

  1143. sow an

  1144. action

  1145. and you

  1146. reap a

  1147. habit

  1148. sow a

  1149. habit

  1150. and you

  1151. reap a

  1152. character

  1153. sow a

  1154. character

  1155. and you

  1156. reap a

  1157. destiny

  1158. what we

  1159. sow we

  1160. shall reap

  1161. says Paul

  1162. to the

  1163. Galatians

  1164. let's

  1165. ensure

  1166. tonight

  1167. and always

  1168. that we

  1169. are sowing

  1170. to the

  1171. spirit of

  1172. God

  1173. and living

  1174. a life

  1175. guarded

  1176. by God

  1177. himself

  1178. trusting

  1179. in him

  1180. and ensuring

  1181. that as

  1182. we realise

  1183. that the

  1184. power of

  1185. our own

  1186. sinful

  1187. hearts

  1188. are need

  1189. to be

  1190. under guard

  1191. against

  1192. anything

  1193. and everything

  1194. that will

  1195. seek to

  1196. disrupt

  1197. and destroy

  1198. our relationship

  1199. with God

  1200. may God

  1201. bless his

  1202. word to us

  1203. so we're

  1204. now going to

  1205. conclude by

  1206. singing Psalm

  1207. 103

  1208. in Psalm
