  1. Would you please in your Bibles just now turn back to Matthew chapter 6 where we've read page 978 in our Bibles.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. Well, let's just pray just for a moment before we study the Word together.

  4. Heavenly Father, we come as always to the Bible with that sense, Lord, of expectation.

  5. We want to hear your voice. We want to hear what you are saying to us out of Scripture.

  6. And so we pray that today you would guide our thoughts and our hearts to be fed and nourished from these things.

  7. That our faith may grow and deepen. That we may know our Lord and Saviour Jesus better because of what we discover.

  8. That we would live our lives to his glory and to the praise of your name.

  9. And so we ask today that these things will be done not through the effort of flesh and blood,

  10. but through the work and power of the Holy Spirit.

  11. So grant us that working in our hearts today. In Jesus' name we ask. Amen.

  12. There is a wonderful phrase that I discovered. It chimes with maybe some ideas that you'd find in other writers as well like John Piper.

  13. But certainly Derek Kidner writing a commentary on the book of Psalms has this wonderful phrase,

  14. The greatest happiness is to be in close agreement with God.

  15. The greatest happiness is to be in close agreement with God.

  16. And that's a theme that runs through the psalm that we've read today, Psalm 32.

  17. And I think looking together at Psalm 32 is perhaps an illustration of some of the points I'm going to make today.

  18. And some of the teaching that we can draw out of the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6.

  19. I think it gives us an important insight into the prayer life of the Christian.

  20. So I want this week and next Sunday as well, while Calamurto's away, I want to take a little time thinking about our prayer life.

  21. Today, this morning, we're going to be thinking about it in terms of our private or personal prayer, our walk with God.

  22. And next Sunday evening, if we're spared, God willing, we'll think about public prayer.

  23. And immediately, as I say public prayer, people think, oh, you mean what happens in the prayer meeting?

  24. No, I mean corporate prayer.

  25. Because all Christians everywhere should and do pray with other Christians.

  26. It is inconceivable, in fact, that you could be a Christian and never pray with another Christian.

  27. And so we'll think about corporate prayer next Sunday.

  28. The key, of course, to both of these is actually the idea of fellowship.

  29. So as we go through our lives, we are, as Christians, we're in fellowship with God and also with one another in the church.

  30. There's a fellowship within the circles of our families.

  31. There's your fellowship within the circles that we have of the friendships that we have.

  32. And there's your wider fellowship within the congregation.

  33. And perhaps even wider still within the church at large in the world.

  34. And the key to good fellowship is always to walk in harmony with the person you're walking with.

  35. It's a proverb, a very simple one, that if two people are in disagreement, they cannot walk together.

  36. And that's especially true in our lives spiritually.

  37. If we're in disagreement with God over something, then we cannot walk together.

  38. That's why Derek Kidner's phrase is so apt.

  39. The greatest happiness is to be in close agreement with God.

  40. So the greatest happiness that we can experience in life is to be found when we are walking in agreement with those we share in fellowship with.

  41. With God in our private lives.

  42. With God in our own personal headspace.

  43. And with those around us, whether it's in your marriage or your family or even in the life of the church.

  44. And so I want this morning to suggest four ways in which your prayer life will deepen that close agreement with God.

  45. In which you will find the greatest happiness.

  46. And I hope these will be helpful to you.

  47. Now, as always, I just want to preface this with the three groups that I have in mind.

  48. I think, as a rule, this is how I preach.

  49. I always have three groups in mind when I'm preaching.

  50. The first of these is those who have not yet entered in by the narrow gate.

  51. The Bible speaks about following after God and being saved as entering by the narrow gate.

  52. And there are those who have not yet done that here.

  53. There are those who are still perhaps seeking.

  54. They're interested.

  55. They want to know what this salvation is.

  56. You today might still be looking for someone who can take away your guilt and your shame.

  57. Who will offer you a sure hope.

  58. Maybe you're seeking salvation.

  59. And I want to say to you that today, what I have today, I hope, is for you.

  60. The relationship that you need to have with Jesus as a Savior is found through prayer.

  61. And so if you are not yet already praying to God, and I would suggest that you do so urgently,

  62. I hope that what I have today will help you and give you some guides on how you would go about that.

  63. There's those today here who have entered by the narrow gate and who are on the road to salvation,

  64. but have not long been on that road.

  65. Perhaps you are new to walking together with God.

  66. A young Christian.

  67. Someone who has not yet taken many steps along that way.

  68. And I hope that today, what I have for you will be a blessing to you today to help you and encourage you

  69. as you think about how you pray, but more than just how you pray, just how you relate to God entirely.

  70. Like just what it means to be a Christian living today.

  71. And then there are many of you here today who, I suspect probably what I have to say today,

  72. you will think this is familiar, well-trodden material.

  73. You'll think, I've heard most of this before.

  74. And I would urge you today not to switch off.

  75. The reason I would say that is because when it comes to our relationships with people,

  76. what is often the greatest danger to these relationships is complacency.

  77. We become familiar with the beat and the rhythm of life.

  78. And so perhaps we neglect to spend time conversing deeply with our spouses.

  79. And that can lead to trouble in your marriage.

  80. And it's the same with God.

  81. Complacency can set in in our lives.

  82. And we can become slow to fellowship with God.

  83. And weary, perhaps, along the way.

  84. And find that it's not God that has shifted, but it's us that have departed from a close walk with Him.

  85. And so I hope today these will be reminders to you of the basics that we can get right,

  86. so that we can discover the greatest happiness is found in a close walk with God.

  87. First of all, then, we should note that Jesus, when He teaches the disciples to pray,

  88. He teaches them firstly about the reputation of God.

  89. When Jesus teaches the disciples to pray, He says, pray like this,

  90. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

  91. And just to very briefly unpackage the language there,

  92. the word hallowed means to make something holy.

  93. You know, we talk about hallowed ground.

  94. It's ground, normally talking about a cemetery, in fact.

  95. It's talking about ground that's been set apart for a special purpose.

  96. The church today is hallowed ground.

  97. Not because there's something intrinsically holy about the church,

  98. but because the building has been set apart for the worship of God.

  99. It's a place where we want to come to worship God.

  100. And we've created this space for that purpose.

  101. So if something's hallowed, it's simply set apart, kept special.

  102. And when we talk about God's name being hallowed,

  103. what we really mean is not simply the name of Jesus,

  104. but the whole reputation that God has.

  105. So if we were to think about Ali, who's presenting today,

  106. and there are a lot of things you could say about Ali's reputation,

  107. but a lot of the young people in the church know him by his alter ego of Captain Toothpaste.

  108. That's his reputation, his name.

  109. He's got a name for brushing your teeth.

  110. And when we think about our God, he has a reputation, a name,

  111. a reputation for salvation, for hope,

  112. for granting relief to those who are lost and in darkness,

  113. for bringing light into the world,

  114. for bringing hope into the hopeless darkness of our lives.

  115. And so when Jesus is teaching the disciples to pray,

  116. he begins by teaching them to adore God,

  117. simply to express adoration for God.

  118. Now, in our generation, certainly, there is a rush, isn't there,

  119. to meet our needs.

  120. We would tend to want to prioritize our needs.

  121. And it's very tempting to think of that as being a unique situation in our generation.

  122. People today are very interested in near instant gratification.

  123. If you want something, you just take it.

  124. If you want to order something off the internet,

  125. you can expect it to be delivered the next day,

  126. so long as you order before 12,

  127. and so long as the ferry goes.

  128. But we want things instantly.

  129. We want the immediate delivery of that need to be met.

  130. But the truth is, actually,

  131. in all of human history,

  132. the desire to put our wants and our needs first,

  133. even in prayer,

  134. has always been there.

  135. Because one of the fundamental problems

  136. with sinful human hearts

  137. is what I would call the idolatry of self.

  138. For most people,

  139. the idol is not something external

  140. that you fall down and worship.

  141. Rather, the idol is often something internal,

  142. whether it's our own ego,

  143. our own sense of self and worth.

  144. But we primarily want to put ourselves

  145. at the fore of all things.

  146. And so even in prayer as Christians,

  147. we can fall into that very easily.

  148. We can make our own reputation,

  149. our own glory,

  150. our own comfort,

  151. our own fame,

  152. whatever it might be.

  153. We can make these things,

  154. the first things that we rush with,

  155. into prayer.

  156. And we can almost say,

  157. well, God,

  158. the most important thing today

  159. is not my relationship with you.

  160. It's not your glory.

  161. The most important thing

  162. is what I'm getting out of this.

  163. My needs been met.

  164. But Jesus teaches us to pray

  165. firstly for God's reputation.

  166. Indeed, the greatest happiness,

  167. if this is truly the case,

  168. if the greatest happiness

  169. is to be found in close agreement

  170. with God,

  171. then the greatest happiness

  172. is to be found

  173. when we align our priorities

  174. with God's priorities.

  175. And what does God want?

  176. And what is God's desire?

  177. Well, we could say today,

  178. well, it's to save people.

  179. Yes, but to what end?

  180. Why does God save people?

  181. Why does God bless

  182. and prosper his children?

  183. Why does God give us

  184. the promise of himself

  185. as our everlasting reward?

  186. And it is simply because

  187. God is jealous

  188. for his own reputation.

  189. God being God

  190. wants and deserves,

  191. ultimately,

  192. he's entirely right

  193. in longing for this,

  194. wants the praise

  195. of the nations.

  196. There is nothing

  197. self-indulgent in that

  198. if you are the creator

  199. and sustainer

  200. of all things.

  201. If you are indeed

  202. the highest,

  203. then there is nothing wrong

  204. or flawed

  205. in God wanting

  206. to be glorified.

  207. and the way he is glorified

  208. is in showing us

  209. his salvation,

  210. principally,

  211. in rescuing

  212. rebels and sinners

  213. through the work

  214. and person

  215. of Jesus Christ,

  216. his son.

  217. And so,

  218. God's greatest priority

  219. is, in fact,

  220. for his own reputation.

  221. And so,

  222. of course,

  223. there are many things

  224. that God has promised.

  225. There are many things

  226. that we can claim

  227. and lay hold of

  228. in prayer.

  229. There are many things

  230. that we can ask God for.

  231. But above all of them

  232. and first and foremostly

  233. in all of them,

  234. there needs to be

  235. a desire

  236. that our own hearts

  237. will be aligned

  238. to magnify

  239. God himself.

  240. That we will adore him.

  241. And so,

  242. in our prayer life,

  243. that needs to be the case.

  244. You see it in Psalm 32

  245. where we've read

  246. that the center of the Psalm,

  247. in verse 7,

  248. there's these wonderful words

  249. that David uses.

  250. He says,

  251. you are my hiding place.

  252. The place of ultimate safety

  253. and security.

  254. Last Sunday evening,

  255. in fact,

  256. if you want a great sermon

  257. on this,

  258. go and find it on YouTube,

  259. Kenny I preaching

  260. last Sunday night.

  261. It's kind of

  262. a great example of this.

  263. Of the security

  264. that David found

  265. in the Lord

  266. in times of distress.

  267. Psalm 32,

  268. it's in that same vein.

  269. of that great security

  270. that is to be found.

  271. David then,

  272. he goes on

  273. and he says,

  274. you are the one

  275. who preserves me

  276. in time of trouble.

  277. You know,

  278. the great troubles

  279. that afflict the child

  280. of God in the world,

  281. there are many.

  282. The New Testament

  283. kind of itemizes them

  284. almost quite helpfully

  285. in this way.

  286. It says,

  287. we face enemies

  288. in the world

  289. and the flesh

  290. and the devil.

  291. So the world around us

  292. that are going to be

  293. people who despise

  294. the Christian faith,

  295. who despise

  296. us for following Jesus,

  297. they despise us

  298. for Jesus' own sake.

  299. And it wears us down.

  300. And it's distressing

  301. and it's troubling

  302. to experience that

  303. and the hatred

  304. that comes our way.

  305. And David says,

  306. you are my preserver

  307. in times of trouble.

  308. when the world

  309. despises me,

  310. you're the one

  311. who preserves me.

  312. And the way he

  313. adores the Lord

  314. for this,

  315. he says it's the same

  316. internally.

  317. Psalm 32,

  318. it's really interesting.

  319. The enemies,

  320. the greatest enemies

  321. that David actually faces,

  322. he feels,

  323. are not actually

  324. outside and external,

  325. but that his own heart

  326. and the sinful desires

  327. that rise up there

  328. and that want to

  329. overtake our lives

  330. and want to blot out

  331. and push out

  332. our fellowship with God.

  333. And these things

  334. God preserves us from.

  335. How many of us

  336. can say that,

  337. in fact,

  338. as we think about our lives,

  339. that God has preserved us

  340. not from external threats,

  341. maybe he has,

  342. but more so,

  343. in fact,

  344. from the reckless

  345. things that we would

  346. do ourselves.

  347. And from the ways

  348. in which he has brought us

  349. through troubled waters

  350. and preserved us

  351. from that chaos.

  352. And also,

  353. he says,

  354. you have taken me,

  355. and there's this wonderful

  356. expression that he uses,

  357. you surround me

  358. with shouts of deliverance.

  359. When I read that phrase

  360. in Psalm 32,

  361. actually,

  362. I always think about

  363. old kind of cowboy

  364. and Indian westerns

  365. or old war movies.

  366. You know,

  367. when the good guys,

  368. you know,

  369. defeat the enemy,

  370. whether it's the Germans

  371. coming and they're

  372. beaten back in the fight

  373. in a World War II movie,

  374. or whether it's the Indians

  375. that have come

  376. and the cowboys

  377. have beaten them back

  378. and the sheriff

  379. and all the rest

  380. and they're beaten back.

  381. And as they're running away,

  382. you know,

  383. the good guys are there

  384. shouting for joy

  385. because of the deliverance

  386. that they've experienced.

  387. There's a real cry

  388. of happiness

  389. that comes from

  390. being victorious

  391. and sharing in victory.

  392. And David says,

  393. you surround me

  394. with these kind of shouts.

  395. What David's actually doing there

  396. is he's talking about

  397. the character,

  398. I think,

  399. of a triune God.

  400. Because when we think about it,

  401. we can see the Father

  402. operating in his love

  403. towards us

  404. as the ultimate safety

  405. and shelter

  406. and hiding place

  407. for his people.

  408. God the Father

  409. is our solace.

  410. He is the one

  411. that we run to.

  412. It's his love

  413. that we shelter in.

  414. That's where we find

  415. our comfort

  416. and our joy.

  417. We're talking about

  418. God the Son

  419. and the grace

  420. by which he delivers us

  421. through his victory

  422. at the cross,

  423. offering himself

  424. as one who will take away

  425. our sin.

  426. He is the one

  427. who preserves us

  428. in times of trouble,

  429. the one who delivers us

  430. from the evil one

  431. who would attack us.

  432. Or we think about

  433. the Holy Spirit

  434. who unites us to God

  435. and to one another

  436. and who literally

  437. today

  438. in this church

  439. has surrounded you

  440. with shouts of deliverance.

  441. And that's one of the

  442. most important things

  443. really about corporate praise.

  444. That's why we sing together.

  445. We don't just participate

  446. in watching someone

  447. sing in worship.

  448. We participate.

  449. And often it's because

  450. the people around us,

  451. there's probably people

  452. there sitting

  453. who need to hear

  454. the praise

  455. of God's people.

  456. And the Holy Spirit

  457. has brought us here today

  458. to participate in that.

  459. And so when we pray,

  460. let us pray

  461. as people who know

  462. God is jealous

  463. for his own glory.

  464. And let's remember

  465. that our greatest happiness

  466. lies

  467. in being close

  468. in agreement with that.

  469. In aligning

  470. our prayers

  471. prayers

  472. with God's

  473. desire

  474. for his own glory.

  475. Now what does that

  476. practically look like?

  477. Just very briefly.

  478. I think simply

  479. it is that

  480. this.

  481. I would urge you

  482. to spend time

  483. sitting alone

  484. reflecting

  485. in adoration

  486. on God's character

  487. and expressing

  488. that in his presence.

  489. It's a challenging

  490. discipline.

  491. It's something

  492. that I find

  493. in fact

  494. when it comes

  495. we'll think about this

  496. next week

  497. God willing

  498. but when it comes

  499. to corporate prayer

  500. this is something

  501. that I find often

  502. is lacking

  503. because we don't

  504. maybe do enough

  505. of it in our

  506. private prayer life.

  507. It's just taking

  508. the time

  509. to express

  510. adoration

  511. for God

  512. in his presence.

  513. The second thing

  514. I'm seeing the time

  515. so we'll rattle

  516. through the other points.

  517. The second thing

  518. is confession.

  519. God

  520. Jesus

  521. teaching us

  522. to pray

  523. teaches us

  524. to pray

  525. forgive us

  526. our debts

  527. as we have

  528. forgiven our debtors.

  529. And

  530. there's an awful lot

  531. that we could say here

  532. but it comes back

  533. to

  534. the primary

  535. relationship

  536. that we have

  537. with God

  538. just now

  539. in this world.

  540. We relate

  541. to God

  542. just now

  543. in this world

  544. as men

  545. and women

  546. who have

  547. offended

  548. a holy God

  549. who have

  550. affronted him

  551. with our sin.

  552. We haven't

  553. lived as we should

  554. we haven't

  555. done what we should

  556. we haven't

  557. said the things

  558. we should

  559. we haven't

  560. gone to the places

  561. we should

  562. we haven't

  563. devoted ourselves

  564. as we ought to

  565. to a holy God

  566. perhaps because

  567. we don't adore him

  568. enough.

  569. We miss him.

  570. we fall short

  571. of the standard

  572. that he has set

  573. and

  574. the great

  575. challenge

  576. for us

  577. is to

  578. recognize that

  579. and to come

  580. to God

  581. to deal with it.

  582. To come to God

  583. and to acknowledge

  584. our sin

  585. so that we will be

  586. continually fit

  587. for his

  588. presence.

  589. I was trying

  590. to think of a way

  591. of illustrating

  592. this and

  593. what actually

  594. you know my love

  595. of movies

  596. particularly science

  597. fiction

  598. I was thinking

  599. about Star Trek

  600. and sometimes

  601. you see the

  602. Enterprise

  603. it's caught in the

  604. grip of an

  605. enormous force

  606. maybe it's a

  607. black hole

  608. or something

  609. but the ship

  610. just can't

  611. escape

  612. and Kirk's

  613. there on the

  614. bridge

  615. and he's

  616. saying Scotty

  617. you've got to

  618. get us out of

  619. here

  620. you've got to

  621. give us

  622. everything we've

  623. got

  624. and Scotty

  625. will come up

  626. with some

  627. completely

  628. harebrained

  629. ingenious plan

  630. and he'll

  631. say something

  632. like I'll

  633. eject the

  634. warp core

  635. and it'll

  636. blow up

  637. and so Scotty

  638. ejects the

  639. warp core

  640. and it blows

  641. up behind

  642. the ship

  643. and the

  644. ship's set

  645. free in an

  646. instant

  647. it just

  648. like it

  649. it hurtles

  650. away from

  651. the danger

  652. and that's

  653. what confession

  654. is like in

  655. the life of

  656. the Christian

  657. it's that we

  658. have to

  659. eject that

  660. that sin

  661. we have to

  662. acknowledge that

  663. sin

  664. instead of

  665. clinging on to

  666. it

  667. instead of

  668. clinging on to

  669. the crazy

  670. idea that

  671. our sin

  672. isn't a

  673. big deal

  674. it needs to

  675. get jettisoned

  676. out the

  677. back

  678. and in

  679. the great

  680. grace of

  681. God and

  682. in the

  683. love that

  684. he shows

  685. us and

  686. in the

  687. wonder of

  688. the cross

  689. and the

  690. magnificence of

  691. what Jesus

  692. has done

  693. that guilt

  694. is taken

  695. by Christ

  696. and it's

  697. replaced with

  698. his righteousness

  699. and we

  700. are set

  701. free

  702. and we

  703. can blast

  704. off into

  705. God's

  706. service

  707. and that

  708. today is

  709. why

  710. confession

  711. remains

  712. so

  713. important

  714. in the

  715. life of

  716. the

  717. Christian

  718. we need

  719. to keep

  720. continually

  721. divesting

  722. ourselves

  723. of all of

  724. the stuff

  725. that clings

  726. to us

  727. and slows

  728. us down

  729. we need

  730. to lay

  731. it all

  732. before the

  733. cross

  734. of

  735. Christ

  736. and discover

  737. that we

  738. can be

  739. set free

  740. and

  741. liberated

  742. and

  743. allowed

  744. to go

  745. on

  746. so

  747. there's

  748. adoration

  749. there's

  750. confession

  751. there's

  752. also

  753. thanksgiving

  754. and

  755. thanksgiving

  756. in this

  757. way of

  758. thinking

  759. about

  760. our

  761. life

  762. and

  763. prayer

  764. you

  765. almost

  766. think

  767. it's

  768. strange

  769. because

  770. it's

  771. not

  772. explicitly

  773. there

  774. in the

  775. Lord's

  776. prayer

  777. you

  778. work

  779. through

  780. the

  781. Lord's

  782. prayer

  783. you

  784. can

  785. read

  786. through

  787. it

  788. you

  789. don't

  790. really

  791. find

  792. many

  793. expressions

  794. of

  795. thankfulness

  796. and

  797. that's

  798. a

  799. good

  800. and

  801. important

  802. question

  803. for us

  804. to maybe

  805. ask

  806. why

  807. isn't

  808. it

  809. explicit

  810. I

  811. think

  812. one of

  813. the

  814. reasons

  815. is

  816. because

  817. Jesus

  818. is

  819. teaching

  820. throughout

  821. the

  822. New

  823. Testament

  824. throughout

  825. the

  826. Gospels

  827. there's

  828. a

  829. theme

  830. emerges

  831. and

  832. the

  833. theme

  834. is

  835. there

  836. at

  837. the

  838. beginning

  839. of

  840. the

  841. Lord's

  842. prayer

  843. our

  844. Father

  845. in

  846. heaven

  847. the

  848. relationship

  849. of

  850. God's

  851. people

  852. of

  853. Christians

  854. to

  855. God

  856. the

  857. Father

  858. is

  859. that

  860. of

  861. children

  862. coming

  863. to

  864. a

  865. Father

  866. I

  867. think

  868. it's

  869. really

  870. important

  871. to

  872. understand

  873. how

  874. thankfulness

  875. works

  876. in that

  877. context

  878. and to

  879. see that

  880. in the

  881. context

  882. of a

  883. relationship

  884. with

  885. God

  886. as

  887. Father

  888. how

  889. does

  890. thankfulness

  891. work

  892. in your

  893. family

  894. does it

  895. work

  896. on the

  897. basis

  898. that

  899. as

  900. children

  901. you

  902. would

  903. be

  904. very

  905. diligent

  906. always

  907. to

  908. say

  909. thanks

  910. is

  911. that

  912. how

  913. thankfulness

  914. really

  915. works

  916. I

  917. think

  918. about

  919. my

  920. family

  921. there's

  922. times

  923. where

  924. the

  925. kids

  926. do

  927. there's

  928. times

  929. where

  930. they

  931. don't

  932. we

  933. really

  934. wish

  935. when

  936. they're

  937. out

  938. we

  939. really

  940. wish

  941. that

  942. they

  943. would

  944. always

  945. say

  946. thanks

  947. to

  948. people

  949. who

  950. give

  951. them

  952. something

  953. so

  954. there's

  955. a

  956. place

  957. for

  958. saying

  959. thank

  960. you

  961. it's

  962. really

  963. important

  964. but

  965. actually

  966. the

  967. real

  968. thankfulness

  969. that

  970. children

  971. have

  972. I

  973. think

  974. for

  975. their

  976. parents

  977. for

  978. their

  979. for

  980. the

  981. provision

  982. that's

  983. made

  984. for

  985. them

  986. in

  987. their

  988. homes

  989. it

  990. really

  991. gets

  992. expressed

  993. in the

  994. boldness

  995. in which

  996. they

  997. come

  998. they

  999. appreciate

  1000. the

  1001. provision

  1002. that's

  1003. been

  1004. made

  1005. for

  1006. them

  1007. they

  1008. rely

  1009. willingly

  1010. joyfully

  1011. on

  1012. their

  1013. parents

  1014. breakfast

  1015. is going

  1016. to be

  1017. there

  1018. for

  1019. them

  1020. dinner

  1021. is going

  1022. to be

  1023. there

  1024. for

  1025. them

  1026. lifts

  1027. are going

  1028. to be

  1029. there

  1030. for

  1031. them

  1032. when

  1033. they

  1034. want

  1035. to

  1036. see

  1037. their

  1038. pals

  1039. and

  1040. it's

  1041. not

  1042. that

  1043. they

  1044. come

  1045. with

  1046. it's

  1047. not

  1048. that

  1049. they

  1050. come

  1051. with

  1052. a

  1053. greediness

  1054. about

  1055. that

  1056. but

  1057. it's

  1058. rather

  1059. that

  1060. they

  1061. don't

  1062. come

  1063. to

  1064. parents

  1065. who

  1066. are

  1067. going

  1068. to

  1069. be

  1070. begrudging

  1071. in

  1072. what

  1073. they

  1074. do

  1075. they

  1076. joyfully

  1077. ask

  1078. and

  1079. I think

  1080. that's

  1081. why

  1082. when

  1083. Paul

  1084. talks

  1085. about

  1086. prayer

  1087. with

  1088. thanksgiving

  1089. it's

  1090. that

  1091. sense

  1092. of

  1093. asking

  1094. boldly

  1095. for

  1096. things

  1097. and

  1098. asking

  1099. for

  1100. big

  1101. things

  1102. of

  1103. God

  1104. because

  1105. we

  1106. have

  1107. that

  1108. boldness

  1109. to

  1110. come

  1111. to

  1112. him

  1113. because

  1114. we

  1115. are

  1116. so

  1117. thankful

  1118. for how

  1119. he has

  1120. always

  1121. answered

  1122. us

  1123. that we

  1124. learn

  1125. that God

  1126. is a

  1127. worthy

  1128. loving

  1129. parent

  1130. the perfect

  1131. example of

  1132. what a

  1133. parent would

  1134. be

  1135. and so

  1136. therefore we

  1137. can come to

  1138. him with that

  1139. sense of

  1140. boldness

  1141. and you see it

  1142. in Psalm 32

  1143. where David

  1144. talks there about

  1145. the blessing of the

  1146. one whose

  1147. transgression is

  1148. forgiven

  1149. the great

  1150. happiness

  1151. happiness

  1152. that that

  1153. person

  1154. has

  1155. because

  1156. his

  1157. life

  1158. is so

  1159. closely

  1160. aligned

  1161. to

  1162. God's

  1163. priorities

  1164. sin

  1165. is dealt

  1166. with

  1167. the glory

  1168. of God

  1169. is advanced

  1170. and David

  1171. what he's

  1172. really saying

  1173. that is

  1174. he's

  1175. discovered

  1176. that God

  1177. in his

  1178. great provision

  1179. is someone

  1180. that he can

  1181. rest on

  1182. and joyfully

  1183. trust

  1184. in

  1185. and therefore

  1186. thankfulness

  1187. becomes

  1188. just an

  1189. automatic

  1190. overflow

  1191. in the

  1192. continual

  1193. expression

  1194. of his

  1195. life

  1196. and so

  1197. when we

  1198. want to

  1199. think about

  1200. our

  1201. prayer

  1202. life

  1203. that's

  1204. where

  1205. thankfulness

  1206. has to

  1207. come into

  1208. it

  1209. isn't it

  1210. that we're

  1211. continually

  1212. expressing

  1213. our thanks

  1214. to God

  1215. directly

  1216. yes

  1217. but that

  1218. actually

  1219. more so

  1220. our prayer

  1221. life

  1222. and our

  1223. dependence

  1224. on God

  1225. is informed

  1226. by that

  1227. experience

  1228. of his

  1229. faithfulness

  1230. that God

  1231. has always

  1232. been there

  1233. for us

  1234. that God

  1235. has always

  1236. secured us

  1237. that God

  1238. has always

  1239. made it

  1240. safe for us

  1241. has always

  1242. made it

  1243. possible for

  1244. us to go

  1245. forward

  1246. even when we

  1247. are surrounded

  1248. by distress

  1249. where grief

  1250. comes in

  1251. like a flood

  1252. he's still

  1253. there

  1254. and he

  1255. still gives

  1256. himself

  1257. as our

  1258. highest

  1259. reward

  1260. until we

  1261. come to

  1262. him

  1263. continually

  1264. with

  1265. thankfulness

  1266. which

  1267. ultimately

  1268. feeds into

  1269. all of

  1270. our

  1271. requests

  1272. the S

  1273. in this

  1274. word

  1275. is

  1276. supplication

  1277. so we

  1278. have

  1279. adoration

  1280. confession

  1281. thanksgiving

  1282. supplication

  1283. I hinted

  1284. at it at the

  1285. beginning

  1286. it's a very

  1287. familiar

  1288. structure

  1289. those of

  1290. you who

  1291. have been

  1292. Christians

  1293. a long

  1294. time

  1295. have heard

  1296. and used

  1297. the

  1298. acts

  1299. way of

  1300. thinking

  1301. about

  1302. prayer

  1303. but we

  1304. come to

  1305. God

  1306. with all

  1307. of our

  1308. requests

  1309. whether

  1310. they are

  1311. big

  1312. things

  1313. or small

  1314. things

  1315. it's

  1316. illustrated

  1317. in the

  1318. Lord's

  1319. prayer

  1320. with the

  1321. expressions

  1322. give us

  1323. this day

  1324. our daily

  1325. bread

  1326. on the

  1327. face of

  1328. it

  1329. that's

  1330. such a

  1331. simple

  1332. prayer

  1333. isn't

  1334. it

  1335. give us

  1336. bread

  1337. for today

  1338. but you

  1339. know when

  1340. you

  1341. burrow

  1342. into it

  1343. and you

  1344. start to

  1345. see

  1346. what

  1347. does

  1348. daily

  1349. bread

  1350. actually

  1351. involve

  1352. it's

  1353. not just

  1354. that there's

  1355. an entire

  1356. food chain

  1357. behind that

  1358. that has

  1359. to deliver

  1360. for you

  1361. it's

  1362. that there's

  1363. an entire

  1364. emotional

  1365. chain

  1366. behind that

  1367. that has

  1368. to be

  1369. there

  1370. and supportive

  1371. of you

  1372. as well

  1373. it's not

  1374. enough

  1375. simply to

  1376. have

  1377. bread

  1378. you need

  1379. to have

  1380. love

  1381. and affection

  1382. and family

  1383. and care

  1384. around you

  1385. so Lord

  1386. give us

  1387. this day

  1388. that

  1389. give us

  1390. this day

  1391. the means

  1392. to have

  1393. the bread

  1394. so it's

  1395. a prayer

  1396. for employment

  1397. and the

  1398. structures

  1399. for employment

  1400. to be in

  1401. place

  1402. they're

  1403. vast

  1404. it needs

  1405. society

  1406. to be

  1407. at peace

  1408. for society

  1409. to function

  1410. for trade

  1411. to operate

  1412. all of these

  1413. things have

  1414. to be in

  1415. place

  1416. for us

  1417. to have

  1418. jobs

  1419. there has

  1420. to be

  1421. someone

  1422. levying

  1423. taxes

  1424. to pay

  1425. for you

  1426. as a

  1427. teacher

  1428. or as

  1429. a fireman

  1430. or whatever

  1431. else it

  1432. might be

  1433. I mean the

  1434. prayer

  1435. give us

  1436. this day

  1437. our daily

  1438. bread

  1439. is not

  1440. a small

  1441. thing

  1442. at all

  1443. it's an

  1444. enormous

  1445. vast

  1446. prayer

  1447. for daily

  1448. provision

  1449. to be

  1450. made

  1451. in our

  1452. lives

  1453. and for

  1454. God

  1455. to bless

  1456. us

  1457. and to

  1458. keep

  1459. us

  1460. and then

  1461. on the

  1462. other end

  1463. of the

  1464. scale

  1465. you almost

  1466. think

  1467. well

  1468. they

  1469. deliver us

  1470. from evil

  1471. and you're

  1472. thinking

  1473. well

  1474. evil

  1475. that's such

  1476. a little

  1477. thing

  1478. but it's

  1479. not

  1480. the words

  1481. in the

  1482. prayer

  1483. are actually

  1484. used

  1485. to speak

  1486. of delivering

  1487. us

  1488. from

  1489. the evil

  1490. one

  1491. from Satan

  1492. himself

  1493. the great

  1494. enemy

  1495. of the

  1496. church

  1497. who is

  1498. going about

  1499. like a

  1500. roaring

  1501. lion

  1502. seeking

  1503. whom he

  1504. may

  1505. devour

  1506. that's

  1507. the

  1508. battlefield

  1509. that we

  1510. are in

  1511. the conflict

  1512. that we

  1513. are involved

  1514. in as

  1515. Christians

  1516. it is a

  1517. conflict

  1518. against

  1519. cosmic

  1520. powers

  1521. far

  1522. beyond

  1523. the

  1524. things

  1525. that we

  1526. see

  1527. in this

  1528. world

  1529. and be

  1530. no doubt

  1531. Satan

  1532. that great

  1533. evil

  1534. one

  1535. is out

  1536. to get

  1537. you

  1538. that's

  1539. why the

  1540. Christian

  1541. armor

  1542. in

  1543. Ephesians

  1544. 6

  1545. ends

  1546. with a

  1547. point

  1548. of

  1549. prayer

  1550. that having

  1551. done all

  1552. we will

  1553. stand

  1554. and pray

  1555. and so

  1556. today

  1557. as we

  1558. think about

  1559. this

  1560. and as

  1561. we

  1562. wonder

  1563. how

  1564. is it

  1565. that we

  1566. can

  1567. experience

  1568. the

  1569. greatest

  1570. happiness

  1571. let us

  1572. remember

  1573. it is to

  1574. be found

  1575. in close

  1576. agreement

  1577. with God

  1578. in praying

  1579. according to

  1580. God's will

  1581. and the

  1582. things that

  1583. God has

  1584. willed for

  1585. us to

  1586. pray

  1587. the things

  1588. that God

  1589. has shown

  1590. us

  1591. the things

  1592. that he

  1593. teaches

  1594. us to

  1595. pray

  1596. for

  1597. they are

  1598. these

  1599. four

  1600. things

  1601. adoration

  1602. of him

  1603. of his

  1604. character

  1605. they are

  1606. confession

  1607. of our

  1608. sins

  1609. there is

  1610. a spirit

  1611. of

  1612. thanksgiving

  1613. that has

  1614. to

  1615. underline

  1616. all of

  1617. this

  1618. and then

  1619. a coming

  1620. with an

  1621. expectation

  1622. for the

  1623. greatest

  1624. and most

  1625. profound

  1626. of help

  1627. in our

  1628. lives

  1629. and that

  1630. is not

  1631. I want to

  1632. finish by

  1633. saying this

  1634. that is not

  1635. merely

  1636. a formula

  1637. for how

  1638. you pray

  1639. that's not

  1640. merely a

  1641. formula for

  1642. the sort

  1643. of things

  1644. that you

  1645. would go

  1646. through as

  1647. a checklist

  1648. and say

  1649. well my

  1650. prayer tonight

  1651. when I go

  1652. to bed

  1653. I want to

  1654. pray in

  1655. adoration

  1656. of God

  1657. I want

  1658. to confess

  1659. my sins

  1660. I want

  1661. to give

  1662. thanks for

  1663. all of his

  1664. goodness to

  1665. me today

  1666. and I want

  1667. to ask

  1668. him for

  1669. his help

  1670. and everything

  1671. that lies

  1672. ahead of me

  1673. tomorrow

  1674. I mean

  1675. that's fine

  1676. but actually

  1677. that same

  1678. template

  1679. in a way

  1680. is a

  1681. pattern

  1682. for Christian

  1683. living

  1684. it's a

  1685. pattern

  1686. for what

  1687. characterizes

  1688. the whole

  1689. of your

  1690. Christian

  1691. life

  1692. day by

  1693. day

  1694. and that

  1695. if you

  1696. seek to

  1697. walk

  1698. in close

  1699. harmony

  1700. with God

  1701. and to

  1702. know his

  1703. friendship

  1704. and his

  1705. fellowship

  1706. then these

  1707. are the

  1708. things

  1709. that you

  1710. would

  1711. prioritize

  1712. and make

  1713. much of

  1714. let's pray

  1715. to him

  1716. just now

  1717. heavenly

  1718. father you

  1719. are good

  1720. and we

  1721. rejoice in

  1722. that love

  1723. that you

  1724. have towards

  1725. your people

  1726. we rejoice

  1727. today that

  1728. you are a

  1729. god who

  1730. wants to

  1731. save

  1732. sinners

  1733. you are a

  1734. god today

  1735. who wants

  1736. to bring

  1737. us

  1738. as the

  1739. finished

  1740. article

  1741. of that

  1742. salvation

  1743. to be a

  1744. worthy

  1745. bride of

  1746. christ

  1747. in the

  1748. new heavens

  1749. and the

  1750. new earth

  1751. and so

  1752. all that

  1753. you are

  1754. doing

  1755. is designed

  1756. towards

  1757. growing our

  1758. character

  1759. and shaping

  1760. us

  1761. and so

  1762. we pray

  1763. today that

  1764. we would

  1765. learn to

  1766. adore you

  1767. for who

  1768. you are

  1769. that we

  1770. would come

  1771. speedily to

  1772. confess our

  1773. sin

  1774. that we

  1775. wouldn't hide

  1776. these things

  1777. from you

  1778. that we

  1779. would discover

  1780. the liberty

  1781. that belongs

  1782. to people

  1783. who walk

  1784. closely with

  1785. their god

  1786. and may we

  1787. know therefore

  1788. the greatest

  1789. happiness

  1790. the greatest

  1791. blessing

  1792. in our

  1793. lives

  1794. in knowing

  1795. you

  1796. and following

  1797. after you

  1798. help us in

  1799. this we pray

  1800. and we ask

  1801. it all in

  1802. jesus name

  1803. amen

  1804. we are going

  1805. to sing in

  1806. conclusion in

  1807. the scottish

  1808. psalter the

  1809. second half

  1810. of the blue

  1811. book

  1812. psalm 116

  1813. singing at the

  1814. beginning

  1815. this is page

  1816. 395

  1817. and we're going

  1818. to sing

  1819. four stanzas

  1820. verses one

  1821. to six

  1822. in conclusion

  1823. today

  1824. i love the

  1825. lord because

  1826. my voice

  1827. and prayers

  1828. heeded here

  1829. while i live

  1830. will call on

  1831. him

  1832. who bowed

  1833. to me

  1834. his ear

  1835. the great

  1836. truth of the

  1837. bible that

  1838. god who

  1839. sits in

  1840. heaven

  1841. has bowed

  1842. down his

  1843. ear to hear

  1844. what his

  1845. people are

  1846. saying on

  1847. earth

  1848. and he

  1849. hears us

  1850. and he

  1851. answers us

  1852. and he is

  1853. full of

  1854. grace in

  1855. what he

  1856. does

  1857. so let's

  1858. stand and

  1859. sing to

  1860. his praise

  1861. these verses

  1862. from one to

  1863. five

  1864. one to six

  1865. or to god's

  1866. praise

  1867. i love

  1868. the lord

  1869. because my

  1870. voice and

  1871. prayers

  1872. heeded

  1873. here

  1874. i love

  1875. the lord

  1876. because my

  1877. voice and

  1878. prayers

  1879. heeded

  1880. here

  1881. i

  1882. i

  1883. i

  1884. !

  1885. i

  1886. will fall

  1887. on

  1888. him

  1889. who

  1890. will

  1891. to

  1892. me

  1893. !

  1894. is

  1895. near

  1896. !

  1897. of death

  1898. the

  1899. hearts

  1900. and

  1901. sorrows

  1902. did

  1903. about

  1904. me

  1905. come

  1906. thus

  1907. right

  1908. the

  1909. things

  1910. of

  1911. heaven

  1912. to

  1913. ward

  1914. on

  1915. me

  1916. cry

1917. my soul, O Lord, I do thee hungry pray.

1918. O merciful and righteous is, yea, gracious is our Lord.

1919. O sister me, I was brought to, he did me help her for.

1920. Now the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of God the Holy Spirit be with each one of you now and always. Amen.

  1921. Amen.
