  1. I'll talk a wee bit and mention a couple of things from the end of the chapter as well.

  2. !

  3. And he said vehemently and clearly, I will die for you.

  4. And the Lord Jesus Christ replied by saying, you will deny me three times.

  5. And he did say, he would remind him also or predict that his untimely death would be very difficult as well.

  6. He would know what it is to suffer persecution.

  7. But when all of that happened, of course, Jesus is arrested.

  8. Jesus was eventually crucified, all of which Peter saw.

  9. Peter saw Jesus on the cross.

  10. Peter saw Jesus dying on the cross.

  11. Peter saw Jesus laid in a tomb.

  12. And Peter and the rest of the disciples, in a sense, scattered or disappeared and locked themselves away because of fear of what might happen to them.

  13. What happened to Jesus might also happen to them.

  14. What happens then is that some women came running up to Peter and the fellow disciples to tell them that Jesus is raised from the dead.

  15. They ran, and according to John's gospel, you can read it yourselves, and they go and they see an empty tomb.

  16. But it's really interesting that as they go from there, they lock themselves away in a room.

  17. And it tells you why.

  18. John records it for us.

  19. He was there.

  20. We were fearful of the Jews.

  21. They lock the room.

  22. There is nobody can get in.

  23. And what happens then is that Jesus, the resurrected Jesus, appears in the room.

  24. And, of course, they're terrified.

  25. And Jesus simply says, peace be with you.

  26. I'm not entirely sure it would be that easy to persuade me to peace, to be at peace, if I saw the person on the cross and in the tomb appear in the room with me.

  27. Of course, we know why.

  28. But he demonstrates to Peter the words of Scripture that the grave couldn't hold Jesus.

  29. Yes, he laid down his life as a ransom for many.

  30. The perfect Son of God gave his life to dead sinners that we might have life.

  31. But the wonder of what Peter now reveals to these suffering Christians is that Jesus didn't remain dead.

  32. He was resurrected from the grave.

  33. We met him face to face.

  34. In a locked room, the resurrection body is different.

  35. And what is even more amazing that Peter, when he writes these words, was also the same person that would meet Jesus on a beach a few days later and have breakfast with Jesus, the resurrected Jesus.

  36. And there, Jesus would restore the bungling Peter.

  37. And that's why we love Peter, I think.

  38. I don't know, maybe you don't, but I do.

  39. Because in my life, I see the mistakes and I see Peter's mistakes.

  40. And I have a sense of hope that I, too, can know the continual redeeming love of God for my mistakes, too.

  41. It's just amazing to see.

  42. But it's this thought that I want you to hold in your mind as we turn to 1 Peter.

  43. The one who writes the testimony of what it is to have a living hope is the one who saw Jesus die, breathe as last, shed his blood, and was raised again on the third day to life by the power of the Spirit.

  44. Who walked with the disciples, who talked with the disciples, who explained to the disciples that all of the Old Testament had been pointing to him.

  45. It is such a marvelous experience and insight.

  46. And now he writes to these Christians in the five towns, shall we say, that are being persecuted because of their faith in Jesus Christ.

  47. It was a time when Paul and Peter would be put to death, mid-60s, shall we say, of 60 AD, 65 AD, around that sort of time.

  48. And he is writing this to people who are experiencing great trial because of their faith.

  49. And they were probably beginning to either doubt or wobble in their faith.

  50. Now, who hasn't had a wobble in their faith?

  51. Maybe health issues.

  52. Maybe things that have happened to us and we have a wobble.

  53. We start to question.

  54. Lord, are you really walking with me?

  55. What is this?

  56. And it's interesting that Peter didn't turn around to the churches and say, I'm really sorry that you're experiencing great trial.

  57. It breaks my heart.

  58. What he does is, he doesn't diminish that, by the way.

  59. He goes straight to the very foundation of their lives and their relationship with Jesus.

  60. He goes straight to the fact that they have been called by God, saved by Jesus through the sprinkling of his blood, through the work of the Holy Spirit.

  61. Therefore, they have a living hope.

  62. Not a maybe hope.

  63. Now, I said earlier to the kids that we have this thing in Lewis, this hope in Lewis.

  64. You know, we can even say, yes, I believe in Jesus, but I don't know if I'll get to heaven.

  65. No, no, that isn't biblical.

  66. When we trust in Jesus for our salvation and have a living hope, we're trusting in him and what he has done, what he has completed, what he has fulfilled, that he has risen from the dead, that he ascends to the right hand of God the Father and continues to intercede.

  67. It is all dependent on our relationship with him.

  68. If you have Jesus as your Savior, you have a living hope.

  69. It's all to do with him.

  70. It's on him, through him.

  71. And so that's really important for us as we delve into this bit of scripture today.

  72. And the first thing, of course, in verse 3, blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  73. He's just oozing with a sense of joy and privilege and blessing.

  74. And it's just expressive.

  75. Praise be to God, as we would sing maybe the additional element to Psalm 100.

  76. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

  77. Praise him, all creatures here below.

  78. Praise him above ye heavenly hosts.

  79. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

  80. It's this expression of a believer who knows the Redeemer.

  81. Praise be to the Lord, the one who has provided salvation, who has redeemed his people.

  82. So what does he then express?

  83. It's so important for us to understand that when we are going through trials in life,

  84. the challenges that each and every one of us face, the questions that we have,

  85. whatever it might be, here Peter underlines again the foundation.

  86. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ because of his mercy.

  87. Because of his mercy.

  88. It's a great challenge to us hearing that because of his mercy.

  89. Justice is getting what you deserve.

  90. Mercy is not getting what you deserve.

  91. Grace is getting what you do not deserve.

  92. That is what we receive.

  93. Grace, we don't deserve it.

  94. But in Jesus Christ, we also get mercy.

  95. Mercy is such an amazing blessing given through the sacrificial work of Jesus.

  96. Everything that we are as believers,

  97. if you are a believer today,

  98. you know the mercy of God.

  99. You know that steadfast love.

  100. And God's steadfast love isn't in the absence of judgment.

  101. It's in the presence of it.

  102. They work hand in hand.

  103. What do I mean?

  104. There is not a person in here that surprises God.

  105. There is not a person.

  106. I mean, when I had backslidden way years ago,

  107. I would always try and persuade myself to come to church and do better.

  108. You've got to do better, Barvis.

  109. Do better.

  110. And I would come in and try and hide wherever I would be.

  111. And I would just turn up in church,

  112. which is a good thing, by the way.

  113. But the battle was much deeper.

  114. A lack of understanding of what it meant just to understand the mercy of God.

  115. And Lord, I'm sorry I messed up.

  116. I messed up again.

  117. Lord, help me.

  118. And in his steadfast love,

  119. he does again and again and again.

  120. And gives me and every believer the grace of repentance.

  121. Daily repentance.

  122. That great term named in a book,

  123. St. Claude B. Ferguson wrote,

  124. the grace of repentance.

  125. Go get it.

  126. It's worth reading every word of it.

  127. True love.

  128. The love of God doesn't exist in the absence of judgment.

  129. There are no surprises here today.

  130. There are no mistakes here today.

  131. Not one of you.

  132. We might make mistakes,

  133. but there are no mistakes.

  134. God knows everything.

  135. And he demonstrates his mercy for you.

  136. Wherever you have been,

  137. there is nothing that you have done

  138. that God's mercy can't redeem

  139. because of the powerful, sacrificial love of Jesus.

  140. Nothing.

  141. Nothing.

  142. There's not one person,

  143. the sin of one person here today

  144. that overwhelms the steadfast love of God in Christ Jesus.

  145. Not one.

  146. So that is this mercy that he speaks about.

  147. He understands that God has always been active

  148. right from the beginning of the fall.

  149. At the fall,

  150. when he exclaims,

  151. the seed of the woman

  152. will crush the head of the serpent.

  153. The serpent will bruise his heel.

  154. That whole picture of mercy

  155. is strewn right through the Old Testament

  156. until the arrival of Jesus,

  157. the seed of the woman.

  158. Hence why Peter calls him here

  159. as the seed,

  160. the imperishable seed.

  161. He is the seed of the woman

  162. who would overcome the world,

  163. who would overcome sin

  164. and our rebellion within us

  165. and bring us home

  166. because he is merciful.

  167. And it is the great joy of every Christian

  168. to know today that mercy.

  169. And it is exactly that mercy

  170. that is always, always on offer

  171. for every moment you take,

  172. for every breath you take in your life.

  173. That mercy,

  174. if you haven't trusted in Jesus,

  175. King Jesus,

  176. it's on offer constantly.

  177. But there can be a time

  178. when that ceases,

  179. when it evaporates

  180. in our final moments.

  181. If you haven't,

  182. I beg you to follow him,

  183. to receive this mercy,

  184. to understand what he is doing.

  185. That mercy then is explained

  186. that he has given us new birth,

  187. born again,

  188. born again,

  189. not of Adam's seed,

  190. but the imperishable seed,

  191. God,

  192. the Christ,

  193. the Savior,

  194. the seed of the woman.

  195. Through him,

  196. we're born again.

  197. We start again.

  198. We have a restoration

  199. of our relationship.

  200. Now,

  201. when we talk about the great sin,

  202. in churches,

  203. we talk about sin.

  204. Now,

  205. almost inevitably,

  206. we're thinking about things

  207. that we do.

  208. But the great sin,

  209. ultimately,

  210. is unbelief

  211. or inner rebellion.

  212. That is the great sin.

  213. Other things are follow-ons.

  214. As Jesus would say,

  215. you deal with the heart.

  216. The other things are from the hand,

  217. what flows from the heart.

  218. That's essentially what he's saying

  219. in the Beatitudes,

  220. the Sermon on the Mount,

  221. I should say.

  222. And so here,

  223. you understand the call

  224. to new birth,

  225. to a new start with him.

  226. If you haven't,

  227. that is the blessing

  228. that you are being offered,

  229. a new birth.

  230. And what does that mean?

  231. It means that through

  232. new birth in Christ Jesus,

  233. you believe in him,

  234. you have a living hope.

  235. And I'm just going to quote

  236. a person first of all,

  237. and then two or three scriptures

  238. afterwards.

  239. I want you to understand

  240. the power and the depth

  241. and the majesty

  242. of this mercy,

  243. this new birth,

  244. this call for you

  245. to follow him.

  246. And if you're a believer

  247. here today,

  248. I want to challenge you.

  249. I will challenge you

  250. at the end.

  251. But it's a challenge for you.

  252. How now shall you live?

  253. In the title given

  254. to one of Chuck Colson's book,

  255. how now shall you live

  256. in light of this?

  257. Do we hide?

  258. When you have this living hope,

  259. do you hide?

  260. So we're going to challenge

  261. ourselves at the end for that.

  262. I don't know,

  263. as I do,

  264. I'm like a kid in a sweetie shop,

  265. and I don't say

  266. what I'm going to do

  267. for the last,

  268. and I just chuck it in now.

  269. But we're challenged with this.

  270. And of course,

  271. if you're a non-Christian,

  272. that's the case today.

  273. Edmund Clowney,

  274. in his commentary,

  275. writes,

  276. Peter writes a letter of hope.

  277. The hope he proclaims

  278. is not what we call

  279. a fond hope.

  280. We cherish fond hopes

  281. because they are so fragile.

  282. We hope against hope

  283. because we do not really expect

  284. what we hope for.

  285. But Peter writes of a sure hope,

  286. a hope that holds our future

  287. in its hands,

  288. a current hope

  289. that is anchored in the life

  290. and death and resurrection of Jesus.

  291. Peter knows that God's salvation

  292. in Christ means deliverance

  293. from sin and death

  294. and on God's fulfillment

  295. of his promise for salvation.

  296. That is because God has accomplished

  297. his salvation

  298. in the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  299. from the dead,

  300. and you are through him

  301. ready for his return.

  302. You, in Christ,

  303. are ready for his return.

  304. Now, very often,

  305. I get the question

  306. about end times.

  307. And I've stopped

  308. really thinking about it

  309. other than this.

  310. Exactly what he said

  311. at the end.

  312. Be ready.

  313. Be ready now.

  314. Be ready.

  315. Be ready for his return.

  316. We don't know the time

  317. or the hour.

  318. You can be near the kingdom.

  319. You might have been sitting

  320. in the pew here for,

  321. in the pew that you're sitting in

  322. for many years

  323. because your family has.

  324. But here's the answer.

  325. Be ready.

  326. Be ready for his return.

  327. And to be ready for his return

  328. is not to be found in church,

  329. in a pew,

  330. but in your relationship

  331. with him who is merciful

  332. in his great mercy.

  333. Come to him and be ready.

  334. That's how you're ready.

  335. Now, the rest is,

  336. I don't know when he's going to return.

  337. There might be indications.

  338. I don't know.

  339. But in Christ,

  340. I'm ready for whatever happens,

  341. whether it's trials,

  342. sickness,

  343. or whatever.

  344. I am ready in Christ.

  345. That's the answer

  346. that Clowney here says.

  347. He gives you.

  348. Be ready for his return.

  349. The only way to be ready

  350. is in Christ.

  351. Now, in a couple of bits

  352. of Scripture,

  353. Paul writes,

  354. first of all,

  355. in Corinth,

  356. he talks about the challenge

  357. of those people

  358. who were beginning

  359. to bring doubt

  360. about the resurrection.

  361. And he really challenges them

  362. about that.

  363. And he writes this.

  364. He says,

  365. For if the dead are not raised,

  366. then Christ has not been raised

  367. either.

  368. And if Christ has not been raised,

  369. your faith is futile.

  370. You are still in your sins.

  371. Then those who have fallen asleep

  372. in Christ are lost.

  373. If only for this life

  374. we have hope in Christ,

  375. we are to be pitied

  376. more than all men.

  377. But Christ has indeed

  378. been raised from the dead,

  379. the firstfruits of those

  380. who have fallen asleep.

  381. For since death came through a man,

  382. the resurrection of the dead

  383. comes through a man.

  384. For as in Adam

  385. all die,

  386. so in Christ

  387. all will be made alive.

  388. All in Christ

  389. will be born again.

  390. Now, to one of my favorite chapters

  391. in the New Testament,

  392. I need you to hear

  393. the cast iron guarantee

  394. of a living hope.

  395. I need you to hear

  396. what it's saying.

  397. And in many ways,

  398. it would have been suitable

  399. for Paul to write

  400. to these struggling,

  401. suffering Christians

  402. as well in these five towns.

  403. Romans 8,

    Romans 8:33

  404. verse 33 and onwards.

  405. Who will bring

  406. any charge

  407. against those

  408. whom God has chosen?

  409. It is God

  410. in his mercy,

  411. that's my added bit,

  412. who justifies.

  413. Who is he

  414. that condemns?

  415. Christ Jesus

  416. who died.

  417. More than that,

  418. was raised to life,

  419. is at the right hand

  420. of God

  421. and also interceding

  422. for us.

  423. Who shall separate us

  424. from the love of Christ?

  425. Shall trouble

  426. or hardship

  427. or persecution

  428. or famine

  429. or nakedness

  430. or danger

  431. or sword?

  432. As it is written,

  433. for your sake,

  434. we face death

  435. all day long.

  436. We are considered

  437. as sheep

  438. to be slaughtered.

  439. No,

  440. in all these things,

  441. we are more

  442. than conquerors

  443. through him

  444. who loved us.

  445. For I am convinced

  446. that neither death

  447. nor life

  448. nor angels

  449. nor demons,

  450. neither the present

  451. nor the future

  452. nor any powers,

  453. neither height

  454. nor depth

  455. nor anything else

  456. in all creation

  457. will be able

  458. to separate us

  459. from the love

  460. of God

  461. that is in Christ

  462. Jesus our Lord.

  463. God.

  464. If there is a bit

  465. of scripture

  466. I would like you

  467. to read

  468. when you go home

  469. today

  470. before you eat

  471. your lunch,

  472. read it together.

  473. Read it together.

  474. Chew over it.

  475. Meditate

  476. on these words.

  477. This is the power

  478. of Christ.

  479. The grave

  480. couldn't hold him

  481. and in him

  482. it cannot hold you.

  483. Sin cannot hold you.

  484. It puts it to death.

  485. We are raised

  486. with Christ.

  487. We have new life.

  488. It is incredible

  489. to understand this

  490. because on this

  491. foundation

  492. you live out

  493. the Christian life.

  494. You live it out.

  495. Far too often

  496. we go into our shells.

  497. We end up fighting

  498. cultural wars.

  499. Everybody's waving

  500. their flags

  501. anti this,

  502. pro that

  503. and we're getting

  504. swallowed up

  505. in it all

  506. and we're getting

  507. quieter and quieter

  508. as believers.

  509. But we have

  510. this living hope.

  511. You have it

  512. in Christ

  513. and there is nothing

  514. nothing means

  515. nothing.

  516. Absolutely nothing

  517. can separate you

  518. from the love of God

  519. that is in Christ Jesus.

  520. It's truly fabulous.

  521. It changes everything.

  522. And we're all concerned

  523. about the changes

  524. that happen

  525. in our culture.

  526. You have them here.

  527. We have them elsewhere.

  528. But nothing

  529. can rob you

  530. of this.

  531. Not even Satan.

  532. He lost

  533. the battle.

  534. He can damage you

  535. but you can't

  536. lose this.

  537. It is cast iron.

  538. Nothing

  539. can separate you

  540. from

  541. the Lord,

  542. the love of God

  543. that is in Christ

  544. Jesus.

  545. And I pray then

  546. that it would work

  547. in you.

  548. Mold that into

  549. your thinking

  550. and understanding

  551. and you're looking

  552. at people around you

  553. and storing away.

  554. How many people

  555. I see

  556. and I work with

  557. or used to work with

  558. or play football

  559. with or fight with

  560. or whatever.

  561. All of these things

  562. back in the day.

  563. Now I'm seeing

  564. all these people.

  565. Many of them

  566. don't even come to church.

  567. They don't engage.

  568. But that is our calling.

  569. We have this message

  570. that is our calling

  571. to go.

  572. Not to retreat.

  573. To get into fight mode.

  574. To bicker.

  575. This is our calling.

  576. This is what we're called to.

  577. Paul also said,

  578. we were therefore

  579. buried with him

  580. through baptism

  581. into death

  582. in order that

  583. just as Christ

  584. was raised from the dead

  585. through the glory

  586. of the Father,

  587. we too

  588. may live

  589. a new life.

  590. Very quickly then.

  591. You're thinking

  592. how am I going to finish

  593. in this time?

  594. Probably not.

  595. I might go over

  596. a minute or two

  597. or whatever.

  598. If the clock

  599. bothers you

  600. I'll go over it anyway

  601. probably a wee bit

  602. but not much.

  603. The joy then he says

  604. to these people

  605. is this

  606. that you have

  607. an inheritance.

  608. Now my wife

  609. often tells me

  610. you're the only

  611. Lewis man I know

  612. that has never been

  613. left a croft.

  614. That's true.

  615. I haven't

  616. but I don't know

  617. if I'm the only one.

  618. I doubt very much

  619. that I'm the only one.

  620. But we are heirs

  621. of God.

  622. What an incredible

  623. privilege we have.

  624. We are heirs

  625. through the work

  626. of Jesus

  627. the atoning work

  628. of Jesus

  629. the resurrection

  630. power in our lives

  631. we have an inheritance

  632. that cannot

  633. perish.

  634. It's undefiled.

  635. It's unfading.

  636. It feels like

  637. the Christian

  638. witness is

  639. fading in the

  640. church

  641. of Christ.

  642. But God

  643. hasn't changed.

  644. He's still

  645. sovereign.

  646. He's still

  647. ruler.

  648. He's still

  649. the merciful one.

  650. He's still

  651. the one who

  652. brings people

  653. to life.

  654. I had the

  655. opportunity

  656. a few months

  657. ago to speak

  658. about Mission

  659. International

  660. and to share

  661. incredible stories.

  662. One of them

  663. in Malawi

  664. when the

  665. second blast

  666. of Cyclone

  667. Freddie

  668. absolutely

  669. obliterated

  670. Malawi.

  671. And the

  672. pastor we were

  673. working with

  674. we were working

  675. with several

  676. but he was the

  677. main guy

  678. he was a

  679. translator

  680. he starts

  681. preaching

  682. in these

  683. camps.

  684. Tens of

  685. thousands

  686. and he

  687. proclaims

  688. Christ

  689. and all I

  690. get was a

  691. message

  692. pray for me

  693. for the

  694. Muslim

  695. leaders

  696. are looking

  697. for me

  698. with red

  699. eyes.

  700. They're

  701. full of

  702. rage

  703. because over

  704. 50 Muslims

  705. became Christians

  706. and nearly

  707. 600 came

  708. to faith.

  709. Is God

  710. working?

  711. Yes he

  712. is.

  713. And he

  714. still uses

  715. you as

  716. the body

  717. of Christ.

  718. It's not

  719. just ministers

  720. who stand

  721. up here

  722. and preach.

  723. He uses

  724. you and

  725. your testimony

  726. and this

  727. reality in

  728. your life

  729. is what he's

  730. calling you

  731. out for.

  732. There is

  733. no hiding

  734. under the

  735. bed.

  736. You are

  737. a body

  738. of Christ

  739. you work

  740. together

  741. and you

  742. share this

  743. reality

  744. together

  745. and it's

  746. a living

  747. testimony

  748. of it being

  749. together.

  750. It's

  751. imperishable

  752. it's

  753. undefiled

  754. it's

  755. unfading

  756. this is

  757. kept

  758. in heaven

  759. for you.

  760. That's the

  761. promise.

  762. It's kept

  763. in heaven

  764. for you.

  765. It's like

  766. an anchor

  767. into eternity.

  768. Why?

  769. Because Jesus

  770. is alive.

  771. He's

  772. resurrected

  773. he is

  774. alive and

  775. at the

  776. right hand

  777. of God

  778. the Father

  779. interceding

  780. for you.

  781. That's

  782. how certain

  783. it is.

  784. And finally

  785. you get to

  786. this verse

  787. in verse

  788. 5

  789. where it

  790. says

  791. what's

  792. really

  793. together

  794. unfading

  795. and kept

  796. in heaven

  797. for you

  798. who by

  799. God's

  800. power

  801. are being

  802. guarded

  803. through

  804. faith

  805. for salvation

  806. ready

  807. to be

  808. revealed

  809. in the

  810. last time.

  811. Now

  812. I think

  813. I've

  814. talked

  815. enough

  816. about

  817. the

  818. ready

  819. to be

  820. revealed

  821. stuff.

  822. Okay?

  823. Jesus

  824. is coming

  825. again.

  826. You now

  827. understand

  828. all of

  829. that

  830. from what

  831. I've

  832. already

  833. said.

  834. But it's

  835. interesting

  836. to me

  837. that as

  838. you go

  839. on in

  840. this

  841. chapter

  842. and then

  843. into

  844. chapter 2

  845. it became

  846. very clear

  847. through

  848. Peter's

  849. writing

  850. that there

  851. were things

  852. happening

  853. within the

  854. church.

  855. He talks

  856. about

  857. loving

  858. your

  859. brother

  860. intently

  861. loving

  862. each

  863. other

  864. deeply

  865. and

  866. driven

  867. by

  868. love

  869. the

  870. body

  871. of

  872. Christ

  873. driven

  874. by

  875. that

  876. unifying

  877. love

  878. that

  879. keeps

  880. him

  881. together.

  882. Now

  883. I've

  884. heard

  885. various

  886. comments

  887. about

  888. love

  889. in my

  890. time

  891. as a

  892. preacher.

  893. Oh

  894. love

  895. love

  896. love

  897. love

  898. what

  899. about

  900. the

  901. law

  902. or

  903. something

  904. derogatory

  905. as

  906. if

  907. love

  908. was

  909. some

  910. thing

  911. just

  912. you know

  913. wavy

  914. thing.

  915. But isn't

  916. it interesting

  917. that when

  918. Jesus was

  919. asked to

  920. give a

  921. synopsis

  922. of the

  923. Ten

  924. Commandments

  925. isn't

  926. it interesting

  927. that he

  928. says

  929. love

  930. the

  931. Lord

  932. your

  933. God

  934. with

  935. all

  936. your

  937. heart

  938. mind

  939. soul

  940. and

  941. strength

  942. and

  943. love

  944. your

  945. neighbor

  946. as

  947. yourself.

  948. Interesting.

  949. What is

  950. the first

  951. fruit of

  952. the Spirit

  953. mentioned?

  954. Love.

  955. Now

  956. Peter

  957. said this

  958. to a

  959. people

  960. who

  961. by all

  962. accounts

  963. were

  964. beginning

  965. to

  966. he

  967. says

  968. in

  969. chapter

  970. two

  971. briefly

  972. and I

  973. want

  974. to

  975. go

  976. to

  977. John

  978. to

  979. finish

  980. put

  981. away

  982. all

  983. malice

  984. and

  985. all

  986. deceit

  987. and

  988. hypocrisy

  989. and envy

  990. and slander

  991. put it

  992. away

  993. put it

  994. away

  995. chuck it

  996. get rid

  997. of it

  998. get it

  999. out of

  1000. sight

  1001. because

  1002. that

  1003. should

  1004. not

  1005. belong

  1006. in the

  1007. body

  1008. of

  1009. Christ

  1010. that

  1011. is

  1012. giving

  1013. Satan

  1014. a

  1015. foothold

  1016. to

  1017. bring

  1018. division

  1019. in a

  1020. time

  1021. of

  1022. great

  1023. trial

  1024. which

  1025. is

  1026. probably

  1027. bringing

  1028. doubt

  1029. about

  1030. their

  1031. relationship

  1032. with

  1033. Jesus

  1034. and

  1035. the

  1036. certainty

  1037. of a

  1038. living

  1039. hope

  1040. hence

  1041. why

  1042. he

  1043. emphasizes

  1044. all

  1045. of

  1046. that

  1047. get

  1048. rid

  1049. of

  1050. it

  1051. put

  1052. it

  1053. in

  1054. the

  1055. bin

  1056. if I

  1057. can

  1058. use

  1059. all

  1060. the

  1061. descriptions

  1062. you get

  1063. the

  1064. idea

  1065. get rid

  1066. of it

  1067. it's

  1068. just

  1069. destructive

  1070. it's

  1071. just

  1072. damage

  1073. it breaks

  1074. friendships

  1075. it breaks

  1076. churches

  1077. that's

  1078. what he's

  1079. saying

  1080. to them

  1081. now

  1082. where have

  1083. we heard

  1084. that before

  1085. this

  1086. love one

  1087. another

  1088. deeply

  1089. well it's

  1090. in John

  1091. 13

  1092. isn't it

  1093. in the

  1094. upper room

  1095. where Jesus

  1096. powerfully

  1097. just after

  1098. he revealed

  1099. that Judas

  1100. will be the

  1101. one to

  1102. betray

  1103. him

  1104. he says

  1105. the words

  1106. now the

  1107. son of

  1108. man

  1109. has

  1110. lifted

  1111. up

  1112. it's

  1113. time

  1114. to

  1115. prepare

  1116. for me

  1117. to

  1118. return

  1119. to the

  1120. father

  1121. to

  1122. fulfill

  1123. what

  1124. God

  1125. has

  1126. called

  1127. me

  1128. to

  1129. do

  1130. to

  1131. lay

  1132. down

  1133. my

  1134. life

  1135. final

  1136. few

  1137. hours

  1138. are

  1139. here

  1140. before

  1141. I

  1142. return

  1143. then

  1144. he

  1145. says

  1146. this

  1147. to

  1148. love

  1149. one

  1150. another

  1151. deeply

  1152. as

  1153. I

  1154. have

  1155. loved

  1156. you

  1157. love

  1158. one

  1159. another

  1160. the

  1161. world

  1162. will

  1163. know

  1164. me

  1165. by

  1166. the

  1167. way

  1168. you

  1169. love

  1170. one

  1171. another

  1172. it's

  1173. a

  1174. variant

  1175. that

  1176. lasts

  1177. a little

  1178. bit

  1179. but

  1180. essentially

  1181. saying

  1182. the

  1183. same

  1184. thing

  1185. how

  1186. would

  1187. you

  1188. like

  1189. to be

  1190. known

  1191. today

  1192. is

  1193. it

  1194. as

  1195. someone

  1196. who

  1197. attends

  1198. free

  1199. church

  1200. chemistry

  1201. or a

  1202. disciple

  1203. of

  1204. Jesus

  1205. surely

  1206. that's

  1207. the

  1208. answer

  1209. surely

  1210. that's

  1211. secondary

  1212. whatever

  1213. value

  1214. and

  1215. joy

  1216. we

  1217. have

  1218. meeting

  1219. together

  1220. here

  1221. the

  1222. first

  1223. principle

  1224. has

  1225. to be

  1226. I'm

  1227. a

  1228. disciple

  1229. of

  1230. Jesus

  1231. if

  1232. you're

  1233. a

  1234. disciple

  1235. of

  1236. Jesus

  1237. then

  1238. how

  1239. do

  1240. you

  1241. love

  1242. one

  1243. another

  1244. how

  1245. do

  1246. you

  1247. love

  1248. one

  1249. another

  1250. because

  1251. I

  1252. believe

  1253. in the

  1254. first

  1255. principles

  1256. here

  1257. there

  1258. are

  1259. plenty

  1260. other

  1261. things

  1262. that

  1263. we

  1264. can

  1265. challenge

  1266. ourselves

  1267. with

  1268. but

  1269. here

  1270. is

  1271. the

  1272. basis

  1273. the

  1274. foundation

  1275. that

  1276. is

  1277. built

  1278. upon

  1279. the

  1280. way

  1281. we

  1282. love

  1283. one

  1284. another

  1285. unifying

  1286. one

  1287. another

  1288. facing

  1289. challenges

  1290. together

  1291. have

  1292. difference

  1293. of opinion

  1294. with

  1295. each

  1296. other

  1297. by

  1298. how

  1299. we

  1300. love

  1301. one

  1302. another

  1303. like

  1304. Christ

  1305. loved

  1306. us

  1307. Christ

  1308. had

  1309. just

  1310. revealed

  1311. a

  1312. betrayer

  1313. and his

  1314. words

  1315. to the

  1316. disciples

  1317. is

  1318. love

  1319. one

  1320. another

  1321. why

  1322. because

  1323. he

  1324. knew

  1325. the

  1326. enemy

  1327. would

  1328. divide

  1329. he

  1330. knew

  1331. the

  1332. enemy

  1333. would

  1334. maim

  1335. that's

  1336. why

  1337. he's

  1338. saying

  1339. love

  1340. each

  1341. other

  1342. like

  1343. I

  1344. have

  1345. loved

  1346. you

  1347. that

  1348. surely

  1349. is

  1350. the

  1351. first

  1352. building

  1353. block

  1354. of

  1355. everything

  1356. that we

  1357. should

  1358. have

  1359. as a

  1360. body

  1361. of

  1362. Christ

  1363. we're

  1364. putting

  1365. we're

  1366. imitating

  1367. Christ

  1368. that is

  1369. essentially

  1370. the fruit

  1371. of the

  1372. Spirit

  1373. imitation

  1374. imitating

  1375. Christ

  1376. in our

  1377. lives

  1378. that should

  1379. be our

  1380. joy

  1381. that is

  1382. our

  1383. privilege

  1384. and he

  1385. equips

  1386. us

  1387. and intercedes

  1388. for us

  1389. and helps

  1390. us to do

  1391. so

  1392. that's

  1393. the

  1394. challenge

  1395. that you

  1396. face

  1397. so you

  1398. go from

  1399. here

  1400. ready to

  1401. be

  1402. challenged

  1403. what

  1404. comes

  1405. next

  1406. ask

  1407. the

  1408. question

  1409. you've

  1410. got

  1411. great

  1412. preachers

  1413. around

  1414. here

  1415. ask

  1416. the

  1417. question

  1418. how

  1419. do

  1420. we

  1421. grow

  1422. in

  1423. Christ

  1424. how

  1425. do

  1426. we

  1427. have

  1428. stronger

  1429. bonds

  1430. together

  1431. you pray

  1432. with

  1433. one

  1434. another

  1435. you

  1436. love

  1437. one

  1438. another

  1439. that's

  1440. the

  1441. foundational

  1442. principles

  1443. to

  1444. mission

  1445. the

  1446. trouble

  1447. is

  1448. we

  1449. get

  1450. so

  1451. engrossed

  1452. with

  1453. the

  1454. culture

  1455. and the

  1456. wars

  1457. that we

  1458. have

  1459. in

  1460. the

  1461. culture

  1462. we're

  1463. forgetting

  1464. to

  1465. mission

  1466. the

  1467. culture

  1468. we're

  1469. forgetting

  1470. the

  1471. calling

  1472. to

  1473. go

  1474. ye

  1475. therefore

  1476. into

  1477. all

  1478. the

  1479. earth

  1480. including

  1481. our

  1482. own

  1483. town

  1484. and

  1485. go

  1486. and

  1487. proclaim

  1488. the

  1489. name

  1490. of

  1491. Jesus

  1492. the

  1493. good

  1494. news

  1495. of

  1496. Jesus

  1497. to

  1498. whomever

  1499. even

  1500. people

  1501. that we

  1502. might

  1503. have

  1504. fallen

  1505. out

  1506. with

  1507. over

  1508. the

  1509. years

  1510. it's

  1511. time

  1512. to

  1513. learn

  1514. to

  1515. put

  1516. these

  1517. things

  1518. right

  1519. now

  1520. another

  1521. thing

  1522. and I'll

  1523. close

  1524. with

  1525. this

  1526. I

  1527. promised

  1528. I'll

  1529. close

  1530. just

  1531. about

  1532. on

  1533. time

  1534. now

  1535. I did

  1536. have the

  1537. privilege

  1538. again

  1539. I mentioned

1540. this but I want to do it again because I feel myself that I learned so much of this moment in Rwanda

  1541. !

1542. that I want to try and show you that God can work even in extreme circumstances and obviously if you are at the prayer meeting you'll know exactly what I'm going to say.

1543. When we were out last year in Uganda

1544. When we were out last year in Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, in that middle trip we went to the genocide museum and it's truly heartbreaking, terrible, there's just nothing that you can say that even remotely gives you a good feeling.

1545. It was just terrible. 800,000 people dead, killed in about 100 days.

1546. After that we went to a church.

1547. After that we went to a church.

1548. My predecessor, Hugh Henderson, did a commissioning of a building that were over a thousand people in African style. Don't complain if you've got an hour and five minutes. Just saying. We were five and a half hours. And it was just incredible. Right? So the next two days, four of us had the opportunity to preach.

1549. And I was the last of the four. And afterwards we went for lunch and I'm sitting beside Stephen. It's just like I'm still there. Stephen and Bonnie, the other African guy who's the assistant with the Bishop of Kigali, Bishop Amoti. Brilliant, brilliant people.

1550. And then Stephen starts telling us his story. That he lost his whole family in the genocide. Every single one. Close family, extended family, all killed.

1551. And I'm looking at the other three guys across the table and I'm going, what do you say now? What do you say in this moment?

1552. And it's just, I'm looking at them and they're looking at me. Well, you're a team leader, mate. I didn't know what to say.

1553. And then he says, you know, Roddy, so when you were preaching today, two or three of my elders and some of that congregation were the people who killed my family.

1554. I didn't know what to say. I didn't know what to say.

  1555. I didn't know what to say.

1556. Then he explained, after the genocide, I became a Christian.

1557. And there was one time I was praying to the Lord.

1558. And the Lord made it absolutely clear to me, hear this.

1559. This is what he said to Stephen.

1560. Rwanda will never survive unless you forgive.

1561. Now, anybody who knows my past will know that my instinct will be to fight.

1562. I was struck dumb at what this guy was saying.

1563. As we came away that day, there are more things I could say, but as I came away that day, all of us in the car were silent.

1564. And what we discovered was this.

1565. We just saw the power of Christ in someone's life.

1566. That he wouldn't allow Satan to get a foothold to bring division.

1567. To bring an end to the potential of the work of the church in that area.

  1568. Absolutely incredible.

  1569. That he understood.

1570. Every day he would stand in the pulpit.

1571. They wouldn't have one like this.

  1572. It's a lower platform.

1573. But he would be speaking to the people.

  1574. And you know what?

1575. Every day is an opportunity to give Satan a foothold.

1576. Every day is an opportunity to allow bitterness to overwhelm him.

  1577. Just bitterness.

1578. Enough bitterness to bring hate.

  1579. But 26 years later.

  1580. And a school of 2,000 people.

  1581. And a thriving church.

  1582. Testimony.

  1583. Testimony.

1584. To the magnificence of the power of God in someone's life.

  1585. Imitating Jesus.

1586. Because you see, he knew forgiveness.

  1587. His forgiveness through Christ.

1588. He knew what it meant to him.

1589. And he knew that through the power of Christ.

  1590. He could forgive others.

1591. That is something we need as believers.

1592. To stand out from the crowd with.

  1593. God bless you.

1594. Let's pray as we close.

1595. Lord God, our Heavenly Father.

1596. Lord, we thank you today for the incredible sacrifice of Jesus.

1597. That we are covered in him.

1598. That you have us covered.

1599. And through him we have this living hope.

1600. This imperishable, undefiled, unfading, living hope.

1601. We're also so delighted, Lord, that you are holding us now.

1602. That your power is holding us now.

  1603. Helping us now.

  1604. Strengthening us now.

1605. And we know that in your power.

  1606. Forgiveness is possible.

  1607. Transformation is possible.

1608. All of these things we've spoken about today.

1609. Are all possible because of your majestic grace and love.

1610. And so we pray for every person here.

1611. That we would rest today in Jesus Christ.

1612. The Savior of our soul.

1613. The Savior who was raised from the dead.

1614. Defeating sin and defeating the enemy.

1615. The grave and the evil one.

1616. Lord, in him, in you, we have a living hope.

1617. And I pray that each and every one of us would rejoice deeply in our hearts today as we leave here.

1618. And may you be the glory.

1619. And may all the glory be to you today.

1620. You are an awesome God.

1621. And we love you and we thank you for your radical love for us.

1622. In Jesus Christ's name we pray.

  1623. Amen.

1624. Okay, we're going to sing from Psalm 93.

1625. Oh, is it Sing Psalm, is it?

  1626. Yeah, Sing Psalm 93.

  1627. It's on page 123.

1628. We'll sing the five verses.

  1629. The Lord is King.

1630. His throne endures, majestic in his height.

1631. The Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength and might.

1632. These five verses to God's praise.

  1633. Amen.

  1634. The Lord is King.

1635. His throne endures, majestic in his height.

1636. The Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength and might.

1637. The world is broken, firm and sure.

1638. The world is broken, firm and sure.

1639. We moved it cannot be.

  1640. Your throne is strong.

1641. And you have brought from all eternity.

1642. The seas, O Lord, have lifted up.

1643. They lifted up their voice.

1644. The seas have lifted up their waves.

1645. And made a mighty voice.

1646. The Lord is broken, firm and strong.

1647. The Lord is broken, firm and strong.

1648. The Lord is broken, firm and strong.

1649. Royal statutes, Lord, stand firm

1650. of changing His pure word

1651. and holiness and virtue of ours

  1652. for endless days.

  1653. Praise the Lord.

1654. May your mercy and grace and peace

1655. which we find in you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

1656. one God, may these blessings rest upon each

1657. and every one of us, not only now,

1658. but for every day as we wait patiently

1659. for your return, because we know in you,

1660. Lord Jesus, we have a living hope.

1661. Lord, we thank you, and may the glory be all yours

  1662. in Jesus' name. Amen.
