  1. Well, we're turning back to the chapter that we read in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  2. ! I'm not going to spend much time by way of introduction because we covered all of it last night.

  3. Remember that I said to you there were four things I wanted to think about.

  4. One was the uniqueness of the nature of humankind, and then the work that God had given him to do,

  5. and then the companion that God had created specifically for him.

  6. But you remember the last one was the choice that man faced, the first man faced.

  7. And that's what I want to explore with us this evening, the choice that the man faced.

  8. I want to do that by just thinking about three things.

  9. One of them, the first one, is the specific arrangement that God came to with Adam.

  10. The specific arrangement that related to, focused on, the trees he was allowed to eat and the tree that he wasn't allowed to eat.

  11. And then secondly, I want us to think about the process.

  12. That's what this chapter is all about, at least in the first part of it.

  13. The process through which sin entered into the world.

  14. I want us to think about the conversation that took place between Eve and the serpent.

  15. And then I want us to think lastly of the fall itself.

  16. That moment when Eve and Adam, they took the forbidden fruit, and they immediately, everything changed.

  17. Everything changed.

  18. The whole atmosphere changed suddenly from one of perfection to one of destruction and shame and darkness.

  19. And I want us to look at the consequences of God's wrath and his mercy.

  20. So I think there's enough there to be getting on with for the next half an hour or so.

  21. First of all, I want us to think about the arrangement, the specific arrangement that God came to with Adam.

  22. Now, we're not told the half, of course, of what Adam was shown, the kind of conversations that must have taken place between Adam and God.

  23. There must have been loads and loads of words exchanged between the two of them.

  24. But the Bible wants us to focus on a very narrow area of interest.

  25. And the reason for that is because this is where the test of man lay.

  26. This is where it was going to be determined whether or not the man who was made in the image of God

  27. was going to live up to that image perfectly and indestructibly.

  28. And so the focus of the chapter is on what they ate, the trees in the garden,

  29. and what God was prepared to permit them to eat,

  30. but also what he forbade, the prohibition that God imposed on the man.

  31. And we're given this in very, very clear terms, and specific reference is made to it.

  32. God says, first of all, you may surely eat of every tree of the garden,

  33. but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat,

  34. for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

  35. Now, if you think about it, just think about that one verse.

  36. It's formulated in a particular way.

  37. And theologians down the centuries have identified such a formulation as a covenant.

  38. A covenant.

  39. And so when it came to the writing of the subordinate standard

  40. that our church adheres to the Westminster Confession of Faith,

  41. they identify that specific covenant as,

  42. you should know this,

  43. the covenant of works.

  44. The covenant of works.

  45. And just as an aside,

  46. it's probably best,

  47. it's probably valuable to just spend one or two minutes

  48. just identifying what a covenant was in the first place.

  49. A covenant was a promised bond.

  50. A promised bond.

  51. I suppose that's probably the best way of describing it.

  52. And it very often takes place in human terms

  53. between two kings,

  54. two countries that are at war with one another.

  55. When one country,

  56. when it becomes clear that

  57. one country is going to dominate and win the war,

  58. to the extent where the other king decides,

  59. I'm going to surrender,

  60. they come together and they talk terms of peace.

  61. And in the old days,

  62. way back in Old Testament times,

  63. those terms of peace would be called a covenant.

  64. The two kings would come together,

  65. two governments,

  66. and they would come to a deal,

  67. if you like,

  68. in which the winner or the suzerain

  69. would say to the loser,

  70. the vassal,

  71. here are my terms of peace.

  72. Here is what I'm going to promise you

  73. by way of security for the future.

  74. And here is what I'm going to demand of you

  75. as our vassal.

  76. And so that made for a resolution of the conflict.

  77. And it made for a secure future,

  78. both for the winner king and the loser king.

  79. And it meant that,

  80. hopefully,

  81. if the terms of peace were good,

  82. which they often were,

  83. that both countries would be able

  84. not only to live in peace,

  85. but actually to improve relations with one another.

  86. That's how it worked

  87. in Old Testament times.

  88. And it wasn't just an agreement.

  89. It wasn't just a loose agreement.

  90. It was a very solemn set of...

  91. They often went through a very solemn ceremony

  92. in which blood was...

  93. The blood of an animal was spilled.

  94. And indeed,

  95. when you come on to Abrahamic times,

  96. an animal was cut in half.

  97. And there was a ceremony

  98. in which the two kings would go through the...

  99. walk down the aisle,

  100. if you like,

  101. together.

  102. And they were saying,

  103. if either one of us breaks this covenant,

  104. let us be like this animal

  105. that has been cut in half.

  106. That was the solemnity of the covenant.

  107. And a fascinating,

  108. fascinating theme.

  109. Not least because the idea of covenant

  110. is rooted in God.

  111. That's how God operates.

  112. By way of a formal promise bond

  113. in which he comes to his people

  114. and he says,

  115. I am the Lord.

  116. You are my people.

  117. Here is what I am promising you.

  118. And here is what I am expecting of you.

  119. Now, if you put it like that,

  120. go through the Old Testament

  121. and you'll find that that occurs

  122. on several different occasions.

  123. And the first of them is this one.

  124. I'm tempted to go through this

  125. in greater detail,

  126. but I'm going to say this rather cheekily,

  127. that if you want to explore this

  128. in more detail,

  129. sign up for the ETS Saturday course

  130. two weeks from today.

  131. And we will be exploring this

  132. in great detail

  133. all the way through the Bible.

  134. I hope you'll forgive me for a plug.

  135. But it's all to do

  136. with what we're doing

  137. and the kind of work that I do.

  138. Not just for students,

  139. but for the whole church.

  140. The first of these covenants

  141. is found right here.

  142. Now, there's some people who say,

  143. well, there's no mention of a covenant.

  144. It doesn't tell us

  145. in other places in the Bible.

  146. There's clear mention

  147. that this is a covenant,

  148. but not here.

  149. But when it bears

  150. all the hallmarks of a covenant,

  151. then I think we can safely assume

  152. with good reason

  153. that the covenant exists.

  154. And here it is again.

  155. Let me just read it to you once again.

  156. The Lord God

  157. commanded the man saying,

  158. you may eat.

  159. Here's the provision

  160. that I'm making for you.

  161. Here's the promise

  162. that I'm making for you.

  163. You may surely eat

  164. of every tree of the garden,

  165. but of the tree

  166. of the knowledge

  167. of good and evil,

  168. you shall not eat.

  169. There's the prohibition.

  170. There's the terms of peace.

  171. The terms of agreement

  172. between the two of us.

  173. That's how God operates.

  174. And then he says,

  175. for in the day

  176. that you shall eat of it,

  177. you shall surely die.

  178. Very often a covenant

  179. contained not only a prohibition,

  180. but it contained the consequences

  181. of breaking the covenant.

  182. We have all the hallmarks

  183. of this promise bond.

  184. And that forms the basis

  185. of our understanding

  186. of the arrangement

  187. between God and Adam.

  188. One of the objections

  189. that I've often heard

  190. to Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  191. is this.

  192. And I've often heard this.

  193. Skeptics who come to you

  194. and say,

  195. well, you know,

  196. do you honestly mean,

  197. do you honestly mean us

  198. to believe

  199. that all of the world's problems,

  200. all of the world's difficulties,

  201. all of the violence

  202. and the mistrust

  203. and the betrayals

  204. and everything happened

  205. just because

  206. someone ate an apple?

  207. Now, if you put it like that,

  208. then it does sound

  209. on the surface

  210. a bit ridiculous,

  211. doesn't it?

  212. I can understand

  213. when somebody comes

  214. and they say that.

  215. And what I would say

  216. to that person is,

  217. you haven't really understood

  218. Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  219. or Genesis chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  220. You've taken

  221. a very superficial view

  222. of what,

  223. and that's the reason,

  224. that's part of the reason

  225. I wanted to cover this

  226. this evening

  227. because I think people

  228. do take,

  229. for one thing,

  230. all the focus

  231. is on the forbidden fruit,

  232. isn't it?

  233. And when we,

  234. when we simply think

  235. about the tree of knowledge

  236. of good and evil

  237. and that's all we think about,

  238. then we lose sight

  239. of the big picture

  240. of Genesis 2 and 3.

  241. There's more to it than that

  242. and I think it's worth exploring

  243. the bigger picture

  244. that is happening.

  245. The fact is

  246. that Adam was given

  247. a choice

  248. of one path

  249. or another.

  250. The tragedy is that

  251. we pay all our attention

  252. on the tree of knowledge

  253. of good and evil

  254. and we forget

  255. that there was actually

  256. another tree

  257. in the middle of the garden.

  258. You find it

  259. in verse 9

  260. in chapter 2.

  261. The tree of life

  262. was in the midst

  263. of the garden

  264. along with

  265. the tree of knowledge

  266. and good and evil.

  267. We often think of

  268. the tree of knowledge

  269. of evil

  270. as standing on its own

  271. but that's not so.

  272. There were two trees

  273. in the middle of the garden.

  274. The tree of life

  275. and the tree of knowledge.

  276. Now let that form

  277. the basis

  278. for your understanding.

  279. There was the two trees

  280. and here's God

  281. in this covenant

  282. and he says to the man,

  283. the first thing

  284. he says is

  285. you may surely eat

  286. of every tree

  287. of the garden.

  288. Now you put two

  289. and two together

  290. and what does that equal?

  291. If Adam had

  292. made use

  293. of the provision

  294. that God,

  295. the invitation

  296. that God had given him

  297. to eat of any tree

  298. of the garden,

  299. every tree of the garden,

  300. then,

  301. you know what the answer,

  302. he would eventually

  303. have eaten

  304. of the tree of life

  305. because the tree of life

  306. was one of the rest

  307. of the trees.

  308. It's bound to have happened.

  309. So God's,

  310. God's intention was,

  311. God's provision was,

  312. his invitation was,

  313. that in the course

  314. of obedience,

  315. if Adam had chosen

  316. to obey

  317. and just eat

  318. of the marvelous fruit

  319. that God had given him,

  320. he would have eventually

  321. eaten the tree of life

  322. and by so doing,

  323. he would have lived forever.

  324. And you might ask,

  325. well,

  326. why was this?

  327. Well,

  328. I'll tell you why.

  329. Because man

  330. is given

  331. free will.

  332. He's made in the image

  333. of God.

  334. He knows the difference

  335. between,

  336. he knows right,

  337. but he's given this command

  338. as a test.

  339. It has,

  340. it has to be tested

  341. because if he's given

  342. the ability

  343. to choose

  344. and to opt

  345. for one

  346. or the other,

  347. then the way

  348. to determine

  349. which way he's going

  350. to go

  351. is to test him.

  352. And so this was

  353. the test.

  354. But if he had

  355. chosen to obey,

  356. if he had chosen

  357. plan A,

  358. if you like,

  359. then it would have

  360. been a very different

  361. outcome,

  362. not only for him

  363. and Eve,

  364. but for the rest

  365. of humanity,

  366. I believe.

  367. If you want to think

  368. about it like this,

  369. each tree

  370. is a door.

  371. You have door one,

  372. which is

  373. the tree of life.

  374. You have door two,

  375. the tree of knowledge

  376. of good and evil.

  377. Now,

  378. if you think about it

  379. that way,

  380. I think it adds

  381. a little bit of clarity

  382. to the situation.

  383. Adam's choice was

  384. he either goes

  385. through door one

  386. or door two,

  387. but he doesn't

  388. get to come back.

  389. He chooses

  390. one or the other.

  391. And what his choice

  392. is,

  393. is for himself

  394. and for all

  395. of humanity

  396. because he stands

  397. as what they call

  398. the federal head,

  399. which means that

  400. we were in him.

  401. he represented us,

  402. not just himself

  403. and his wife.

  404. Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  405. tells the story

  406. of how Adam and Eve

  407. chose to enter

  408. door two

  409. by eating

  410. of the forbidden fruit.

  411. I hope that that

  412. clarifies

  413. the situation

  414. for us

  415. and it adds

  416. depth to the objection.

  417. Oh,

  418. well,

  419. you're not going

  420. to tell me

  421. that all the troubles

  422. of the world

  423. are because somebody

  424. ate an apple.

  425. It's not just that at all.

  426. This is a solemn covenant.

  427. This is a solemn choice.

  428. It's an opportunity

  429. to exercise his free will

  430. one way or the other.

  431. In many ways,

  432. it doesn't matter

  433. what the fruit was

  434. or whether it was fruit

  435. in the first place.

  436. It so happened to be

  437. there cannot be

  438. an easier,

  439. more clearer option.

  440. Nobody could mistake it.

  441. What's more,

  442. it doesn't get better

  443. than the Garden of Eden.

  444. It was no difficult thing

  445. for Adam and Eve

  446. to simply obey.

  447. If they only had obeyed,

  448. then they would have

  449. opted for the right choice

  450. both for themselves

  451. and for the rest of humanity.

  452. But it didn't happen

  453. that way,

  454. did it?

  455. It didn't,

  456. that's not the way it was

  457. because through a process

  458. of conversation,

  459. this brings me on

  460. to the second point

  461. I wanted to raise with you,

  462. a process of conversation

  463. in chapter three,

  464. which sees the introduction

  465. of the serpent,

  466. all kinds of questions

  467. in chapter two,

  468. chapter one,

  469. two,

  470. and three.

  471. I know that Genesis,

  472. first chapters of Genesis,

  473. they conjure up

  474. all kinds of questions.

  475. Where did the serpent

  476. come from?

  477. Who was the serpent?

  478. Where did evil come from?

  479. Where is the origin of evil?

  480. You read in chapter one,

  481. God saw everything

  482. that he had made

  483. and it was all very good.

  484. In that case,

  485. where did the presence

  486. of evil come from?

  487. That's the most common question

  488. everyone asks

  489. who wants to know

  490. the Bible more.

  491. The answer,

  492. I don't know.

  493. Nobody can give you

  494. a definitive answer

  495. to that question.

  496. It's one of these areas

  497. where you just have to

  498. throw up your hands

  499. and say,

  500. there is so much

  501. I can understand

  502. about the Bible

  503. but it's limited.

  504. We have to leave that

  505. to God.

  506. I do not know

  507. where evil is originated

  508. but it's there

  509. and it's personal.

  510. It takes the form

  511. of Lucifer,

  512. Satan,

  513. whatever you want

  514. to call him

  515. and he takes the form

  516. of a serpent

  517. and he comes to Eve

  518. in some way.

  519. I don't know

  520. what the serpent

  521. looked like.

  522. It doesn't matter.

  523. He comes to Eve.

  524. I would suggest

  525. very quickly

  526. after God commanded them

  527. not to eat

  528. of the tree

  529. of knowledge

  530. of good and evil

  531. and he embarks

  532. on this conversation,

  533. the temptation

  534. to do exactly

  535. what God had forbidden

  536. and there are

  537. certain features

  538. of this conversation

  539. that are eerily

  540. and scarily similar

  541. to the way

  542. in which he has operated

  543. all down the centuries

  544. even today,

  545. even maybe even

  546. right now

  547. in this building.

  548. He's never far away

  549. but I want you to notice

  550. one or two features

  551. about this conversation.

  552. First of all,

  553. I want you to notice

  554. that at no time

  555. does the serpent

  556. ever tell Eve

  557. to eat the fruit.

  558. Do you notice that?

  559. At no time

  560. does he actually say

  561. I think you should

  562. eat the fruit

  563. because that's not

  564. subtle enough

  565. and it sort of

  566. gives the lie

  567. to the idea

  568. that we think

  569. of temptation

  570. as this voice,

  571. this little demon

  572. on our shoulder

  573. and he's whispering

  574. to us

  575. this is what you should do.

  576. That's not the way

  577. it works at all.

  578. The way it works

  579. is that

  580. he began

  581. to chip away

  582. at the woman's trust

  583. in what God

  584. had said

  585. and it was a slow

  586. drip, drip, drip

  587. process

  588. in which he starts

  589. the conversation

  590. in a plausible manner

  591. and says

  592. to Eve

  593. you know how

  594. God said

  595. what was that

  596. he said?

  597. He said

  598. you can't eat

  599. any of the tree

  600. of the garden

  601. again.

  602. Remind me again.

  603. She says

  604. it's about

  605. that we mustn't

  606. touch the tree

  607. in the middle

  608. of the garden

  609. of the tree

  610. of the good

  611. and evil

  612. and at that point

  613. he seizes

  614. the opportunity

  615. to chip

  616. even further

  617. and he says

  618. actually

  619. in actual fact

  620. things are not

  621. the way

  622. that God

  623. is presenting

  624. them to you.

  625. You're not

  626. going to surely die.

  627. He knows

  628. that the day

  629. you eat it

  630. you'll become

  631. like him.

  632. that's what

  633. he wants

  634. to prevent

  635. you from

  636. better things.

  637. And

  638. you see

  639. what he's doing?

  640. He's chipping

  641. away and he's

  642. undermining

  643. her trust

  644. in the bare

  645. word of God

  646. alone.

  647. and it works

  648. because as the

  649. conversation

  650. proceeds

  651. her mind

  652. is wandering

  653. away

  654. from that

  655. position

  656. where she

  657. accepted

  658. or where

  659. Adam

  660. accepted

  661. the simple

  662. command

  663. of God

  664. not

  665. to go

  666. not to

  667. touch

  668. not to

  669. eat

  670. of the

  671. tree

  672. of

  673. knowledge

  674. of

  675. good

  676. and

  677. evil.

  678. I think

  679. you know

  680. what this

  681. is about

  682. don't you?

  683. You know

  684. this voice

  685. at least

  686. I do.

  687. it works

  688. in different

  689. ways

  690. according to

  691. our

  692. circumstances

  693. where you

  694. are

  695. this evening.

  696. The serpent's

  697. been doing

  698. this.

  699. This is the

  700. first time

  701. he did it

  702. to a man

  703. and a woman

  704. but he's

  705. been doing

  706. it for

  707. centuries

  708. ever since

  709. and he's

  710. doing it

  711. probably

  712. even

  713. tonight.

  714. even as

  715. we speak

  716. perhaps

  717. some of

  718. you open

  719. the Bible

  720. and say

  721. is this

  722. really

  723. true?

  724. Is this

  725. really

  726. true?

  727. Is this

  728. really the

  729. basis of

  730. our

  731. understanding

  732. of the

  733. human

  734. race?

  735. I mean

  736. look at

  737. all these

  738. eminent

  739. scientists

  740. that are

  741. telling us

  742. that we

  743. can do

  744. away with

  745. God

  746. because we

  747. know so

  748. much more

  749. now in

  750. the 21st

  751. century.

  752. We're so

  753. advanced in

  754. our

  755. understanding

  756. of science

  757. and surely

  758. this belongs

  759. to the

  760. Middle Ages

  761. belongs to

  762. the past.

  763. Some of

  764. you have

  765. probably heard

  766. this in

  767. your place

  768. of work

  769. or perhaps

  770. even people

  771. in your

  772. family have

  773. said to

  774. you

  775. are you

  776. serious

  777. about this?

  778. You still

  779. believe?

  780. That word

  781. still is

  782. really painful

  783. isn't it?

  784. You still

  785. believe?

  786. And it

  787. gets to

  788. you.

  789. it gets

  790. to you.

  791. Can I

  792. be personal

  793. the way

  794. it gets

  795. to me?

  796. I'm

  797. coming to

  798. the sort

  799. of senior

  800. end of

  801. life.

  802. I'm

  803. there.

  804. Senior

  805. end of

  806. life.

  807. And the

  808. voice I

  809. hear very

  810. often is

  811. what have

  812. you done

  813. with your

  814. life?

  815. you

  816. spent all

  817. these years

  818. following

  819. Jesus

  820. albeit

  821. rather

  822. badly.

  823. You

  824. haven't

  825. made a

  826. very good

  827. job of

  828. it.

  829. But that's

  830. just an

  831. aside.

  832. You

  833. follow

  834. Jesus.

  835. Look at

  836. what you

  837. could have

  838. done.

  839. Look at

  840. all these

  841. people who have

  842. decided to

  843. go on

  844. different paths

  845. than you.

  846. Are they

  847. all getting

  848. struck by

  849. lightning?

  850. No.

  851. They're all

  852. thriving.

  853. They're having

  854. a great time,

  855. far better

  856. time than

  857. you are

  858. choosing all

  859. the difficulty

  860. of ministry

  861. and being

  862. involved in

  863. the church

  864. and following

  865. Jesus

  866. instead of

  867. just making

  868. the most

  869. of life.

  870. You know

  871. what you've

  872. done?

  873. You're only

  874. going to

  875. live once

  876. and you've

  877. blown it.

  878. Exactly the

  879. same thing.

  880. Chipping

  881. away.

  882. the word

  883. of God.

  884. That's how

  885. he does it.

  886. How does

  887. he do it

  888. for you?

  889. How does

  890. he do it

  891. for you?

  892. Probably in

  893. a similar

  894. way.

  895. What do I

  896. do about

  897. it?

  898. How do I

  899. respond to

  900. that voice?

  901. Well I

  902. come straight

  903. back to

  904. the Bible.

  905. And I

  906. discover

  907. actually in

  908. the Bible

  909. that I'm

  910. strangely not

  911. alone.

  912. If you

  913. read Psalm

  914. 73,

  915. it's the

  916. most remarkable

  917. testimony in

  918. which the

  919. psalmist,

  920. he goes

  921. through exactly

  922. the same

  923. process and

  924. conversation as

  925. I've just

  926. described.

  927. And he

  928. tells us that

  929. the wicked are

  930. thriving.

  931. They're happy.

  932. They're not

  933. suffering in

  934. any way.

  935. And here

  936. he is.

  937. following God

  938. in vain.

  939. And now

  940. there's a

  941. turning point

  942. in Psalm

  943. 73 where

  944. he says,

  945. then I

  946. went into

  947. the house

  948. of God.

  949. And the

  950. moment I

  951. went into

  952. the house

  953. of God,

  954. I saw

  955. things from

  956. an entirely

  957. different

  958. perspective.

  959. That's what

  960. we need to

  961. do.

  962. my dear

  963. friends,

  964. when we

  965. are overcome

  966. by those

  967. voices of

  968. doubt,

  969. we must

  970. take refuge

  971. in the

  972. word of

  973. God alone

  974. that tells

  975. us who

  976. we are

  977. and it

  978. tells us

  979. where our

  980. hope and

  981. our promise

  982. and our

  983. assurance

  984. lies in

  985. God's

  986. word alone.

  987. that's

  988. what we're

  989. here for,

  990. isn't it?

  991. We don't

  992. have anything

  993. yet.

  994. I mean,

  995. how else

  996. when you

  997. think of

  998. the most

  999. impossible

  1000. prospect,

  1001. which is

  1002. the resurrection

  1003. of the

  1004. dead,

  1005. that's what

  1006. God promises.

  1007. He says,

  1008. I am the

  1009. resurrection

  1010. of the

  1011. life.

  1012. He believes

  1013. in me,

  1014. though he

  1015. were dead,

  1016. yet shall

  1017. he live.

  1018. We believe

  1019. that.

  1020. Why would

  1021. we believe

  1022. that?

  1023. Because God

  1024. has said

  1025. it.

  1026. that's all.

  1027. The bare

  1028. word of

  1029. God alone.

  1030. Now,

  1031. I must

  1032. hurry up.

  1033. Then the

  1034. third thing

  1035. is that,

  1036. of course,

  1037. you know the

  1038. rest of the

  1039. story,

  1040. the rest

  1041. literally is

  1042. history.

  1043. The woman

  1044. took the

  1045. fruit,

  1046. and by

  1047. the way,

  1048. Adam was

  1049. as culpable

  1050. as Eve

  1051. was.

  1052. She was

  1053. the first.

  1054. Somebody

  1055. had to be

  1056. the first.

  1057. Well,

  1058. so be

  1059. it.

  1060. But the

  1061. moment that

  1062. Eve took

  1063. the fruit,

  1064. everything

  1065. changed.

  1066. The whole

  1067. environment

  1068. changed.

  1069. Light

  1070. became

  1071. darkness.

  1072. Sweetness

  1073. became

  1074. bitterness.

  1075. Security

  1076. became

  1077. fear.

  1078. Peace

  1079. became

  1080. turmoil.

  1081. Outside

  1082. and inside,

  1083. they knew

  1084. that they

  1085. all of a

  1086. sudden

  1087. discovered

  1088. that they

  1089. were naked.

  1090. Whereas

  1091. beforehand,

  1092. in a

  1093. perfect world,

  1094. that was

  1095. immaterial.

  1096. It didn't

  1097. matter because

  1098. God had

  1099. created them

  1100. that way.

  1101. There was

  1102. no need

  1103. for clothing.

  1104. Now they're

  1105. full of

  1106. shame and

  1107. embarrassment.

  1108. They

  1109. pathetically

  1110. sow fig

  1111. leaves for

  1112. themselves and

  1113. they hide

  1114. from God.

  1115. It only

  1116. gets worse

  1117. as the

  1118. chapter

  1119. proceeds.

  1120. God

  1121. comes into

  1122. the garden

  1123. in the

  1124. cool of

  1125. the day.

  1126. They know

  1127. it's going

  1128. to happen

  1129. because it's

  1130. happened

  1131. before.

  1132. Beforehand,

  1133. they've had

  1134. no problem

  1135. with God.

  1136. God has

  1137. been their

  1138. delight.

  1139. They've

  1140. looked forward

  1141. to him

  1142. coming in

  1143. and to

  1144. every

  1145. conversation

  1146. that they've

  1147. had,

  1148. every opportunity

  1149. of fellowship

  1150. with God.

  1151. They said,

  1152. yes,

  1153. Lord,

  1154. we want

  1155. you to

  1156. come in

  1157. now.

  1158. They don't

  1159. want to

  1160. see him.

  1161. They don't

  1162. want him

  1163. anywhere near

  1164. them.

  1165. And yet,

  1166. he's going

  1167. to come

  1168. in in the

  1169. cool of

  1170. the day.

  1171. It's

  1172. interesting.

  1173. Just a

  1174. little bit

  1175. of an

  1176. aside here.

  1177. When it

  1178. tells us

  1179. that the

  1180. Lord God

  1181. walked in

  1182. the garden

  1183. in the

  1184. cool of

  1185. the day,

  1186. well,

  1187. God,

  1188. that's an

  1189. anthropomorphism

  1190. when God

  1191. describes himself

  1192. in human

  1193. terms because

  1194. God doesn't,

  1195. he doesn't have

  1196. legs to

  1197. walk,

  1198. but that

  1199. doesn't matter.

  1200. We know

  1201. what's being

  1202. said.

  1203. But the

  1204. other question

  1205. here in

  1206. this verse

  1207. is the

  1208. cool of

  1209. the day.

  1210. Be very

  1211. careful,

  1212. very careful.

  1213. This is why

  1214. we teach

  1215. our students

  1216. Hebrew,

  1217. by the

  1218. way.

  1219. It's not

  1220. that cool

  1221. of the day

  1222. is not

  1223. correct,

  1224. but there's

  1225. maybe a

  1226. better way

  1227. of putting

  1228. it and

  1229. something

  1230. that is

  1231. a bit

  1232. more,

  1233. more,

  1234. more,

  1235. that will

  1236. fit the

  1237. context.

  1238. The cool

  1239. of the day,

  1240. walking in the

  1241. garden,

  1242. sort of

  1243. gives the

  1244. impression

  1245. that God

  1246. comes in

  1247. blissfully

  1248. unaware of

  1249. what's

  1250. happened.

  1251. He's going

  1252. for a

  1253. quiet stroll

  1254. in the

  1255. garden,

  1256. and he

  1257. doesn't see

  1258. Adam at

  1259. first,

  1260. and he

  1261. says,

  1262. Adam,

  1263. where are

  1264. you?

  1265. that's not

  1266. the way

  1267. it was.

  1268. You'll

  1269. notice

  1270. there's a

  1271. footnote

  1272. that says

  1273. the wind

  1274. of the

  1275. day.

  1276. This was

  1277. not some

  1278. kind of

  1279. innocuous

  1280. walk.

  1281. walk.

  1282. It

  1283. wasn't a

  1284. stroll.

  1285. This was

  1286. judgment.

  1287. This was

  1288. an angry

  1289. creator

  1290. who was

  1291. righteously,

  1292. exceedingly

  1293. angry

  1294. at the

  1295. fact that

  1296. his image

  1297. has

  1298. deliberately

  1299. disobeyed

  1300. him,

  1301. and he

  1302. has every

  1303. right to

  1304. be angry,

  1305. and he

  1306. seeks them

  1307. out,

  1308. and he

  1309. calls them

  1310. out,

  1311. and he

  1312. begins the

  1313. process of

  1314. interrogation,

  1315. and he

  1316. has three

  1317. things to

  1318. say.

  1319. When he

  1320. hears Adam

  1321. and his

  1322. pathetic

  1323. excuse,

  1324. he says,

  1325. what have

  1326. you done?

  1327. Have you

  1328. eaten of

  1329. the fruit

  1330. that I

  1331. told you

  1332. not to

  1333. eat?

  1334. Adam

  1335. immediately,

  1336. first case

  1337. of passing

  1338. the buck

  1339. in history,

  1340. when he

  1341. blames his

  1342. wife,

  1343. God

  1344. turns to

  1345. her,

  1346. he says,

  1347. what's

  1348. this you

  1349. have done?

  1350. She

  1351. passes the

  1352. buck to

  1353. the,

  1354. it's a

  1355. classic

  1356. case of

  1357. refusing to

  1358. take

  1359. responsibility,

  1360. if ever

  1361. there was

  1362. a mark

  1363. of sinful

  1364. behavior,

  1365. sinful human

  1366. nature,

  1367. it is that

  1368. we refuse

  1369. to take

  1370. responsibility

  1371. for what

  1372. we have

  1373. done.

  1374. It was

  1375. a serpent,

  1376. she says,

  1377. that deceived

  1378. me,

  1379. and I

  1380. ate.

  1381. And so

  1382. therefore,

  1383. God turns

  1384. to the

  1385. serpent,

  1386. and he

  1387. says,

  1388. he then

  1389. decides to

  1390. say three

  1391. things in

  1392. judgment,

  1393. he talks

  1394. to the

  1395. serpent,

  1396. then he

  1397. takes to

  1398. this woman,

  1399. and he

  1400. talks to

  1401. the man.

  1402. I'm going

  1403. to take

  1404. these in

  1405. reverse order,

  1406. simply because

  1407. if I do

  1408. so, we

  1409. will end

  1410. on a

  1411. note of

  1412. hope.

  1413. hope.

  1414. What he

  1415. says to

  1416. the man

  1417. is two

  1418. things.

  1419. There are

  1420. two edges

  1421. to what he

  1422. says to

  1423. Adam.

  1424. There's the

  1425. edge of

  1426. judgment,

  1427. but perhaps

  1428. surprisingly,

  1429. hidden in

  1430. this judgment,

  1431. there is

  1432. grace.

  1433. Where do I

  1434. see that?

  1435. Well,

  1436. what he

  1437. says to the

  1438. man,

  1439. he says,

  1440. because you

  1441. have listened

  1442. to the

  1443. voice of

  1444. your wife,

  1445. verse 17,

  1446. and have

  1447. eaten of

  1448. the tree

  1449. which I

  1450. commanded

  1451. you,

  1452. shall not

  1453. curse to

  1454. the ground

  1455. because of

  1456. you.

  1457. In pain,

  1458. you shall

  1459. eat of

  1460. it.

  1461. Now,

  1462. the good

  1463. news is,

  1464. you shall

  1465. eat.

  1466. In other

  1467. words,

  1468. you're going

  1469. to continue

  1470. to exist.

  1471. to be

  1472. with

  1473. difficulty.

  1474. Whereas

  1475. beforehand,

  1476. when you

  1477. planted seed

  1478. in the

  1479. ground,

  1480. it grew.

  1481. In a

  1482. perfect world,

  1483. if you

  1484. planted seed

  1485. in the

  1486. ground,

  1487. it will

  1488. yield

  1489. 100%,

  1490. and without

  1491. any kind,

  1492. now you

  1493. are going

  1494. to have

  1495. frustration

  1496. after frustration.

  1497. And like I

  1498. said last

  1499. night,

  1500. these are

  1501. the first

  1502. fruit,

  1503. these are

  1504. the symbols

  1505. of all

  1506. the difficulty

  1507. that was

  1508. going to

  1509. arise,

  1510. the things

  1511. that go

  1512. wrong,

  1513. either minor

  1514. inconveniences

  1515. or major

  1516. catastrophes,

  1517. natural

  1518. disaster,

  1519. it's all

  1520. contained in

  1521. these words.

  1522. In pain,

  1523. you shall

  1524. eat of

  1525. it all

  1526. the days

  1527. of your

  1528. life.

  1529. Thorns

  1530. and thistles,

  1531. it shall

  1532. bring forth

  1533. to you,

  1534. and you

  1535. shall eat

  1536. the plants

  1537. of the

  1538. field.

  1539. Yet,

  1540. you shall

  1541. eat.

  1542. Do you

  1543. remember?

  1544. Do you

  1545. see that?

  1546. He's repeating

  1547. himself twice.

  1548. You shall

  1549. eat.

  1550. It's what

  1551. we call

  1552. common

  1553. grace.

  1554. It's how

  1555. theologians

  1556. explain the

  1557. fact that

  1558. God allows

  1559. life to

  1560. continue and

  1561. very often

  1562. to thrive

  1563. in a

  1564. sinful

  1565. world.

  1566. It's a

  1567. sign of

  1568. God's

  1569. kindness,

  1570. making the

  1571. sun to

  1572. shine on

  1573. the righteous

  1574. and the

  1575. unrighteous,

  1576. and the

  1577. rain to

  1578. rain on

  1579. the righteous

  1580. and the

  1581. unrighteous,

  1582. in the

  1583. words of

  1584. Jesus.

  1585. But then

  1586. to the

  1587. woman,

  1588. he says

  1589. this.

  1590. He says,

  1591. I will

  1592. surely

  1593. multiply you.

  1594. Two things.

  1595. He was going

  1596. to multiply

  1597. her pain

  1598. and child

  1599. being.

  1600. That was

  1601. going to

  1602. be a

  1603. mark of

  1604. the

  1605. consequence

  1606. that she

  1607. had to

  1608. suffer by

  1609. way of

  1610. her part

  1611. in the

  1612. disobedience.

  1613. It was to

  1614. become a

  1615. feature of

  1616. the human

  1617. race,

  1618. that whereas

  1619. animals with

  1620. relative ease

  1621. gave birth to

  1622. their offspring,

  1623. the woman

  1624. was to do

  1625. so in

  1626. pain.

  1627. I have no

  1628. direct knowledge

  1629. of course of

  1630. this.

  1631. I can only

  1632. talk about

  1633. having witnessed

  1634. the birth of

  1635. my six

  1636. children from

  1637. afar, but

  1638. it is true.

  1639. It's true,

  1640. isn't it?

  1641. But then he

  1642. says this,

  1643. your desire

  1644. shall be for

  1645. your husband

  1646. and he shall

  1647. rule over.

  1648. What does this

  1649. mean?

  1650. Your desire

  1651. shall be for

  1652. your husband

  1653. and he shall

  1654. rule over

  1655. us.

  1656. what it

  1657. means is

  1658. that whereas

  1659. there was

  1660. perfectly

  1661. balanced

  1662. desire for

  1663. him before

  1664. now,

  1665. there is a

  1666. distorted,

  1667. exaggerated

  1668. dependence on

  1669. him now.

  1670. And the

  1671. rule that he

  1672. would have

  1673. had before

  1674. now, which

  1675. was a

  1676. loving,

  1677. balanced

  1678. rule,

  1679. would now

  1680. become a

  1681. monstrous

  1682. one.

  1683. or might

  1684. become a

  1685. monster.

  1686. Again, if it

  1687. wasn't for

  1688. God's common

  1689. grace that

  1690. restrains us

  1691. sometimes more

  1692. than others.

  1693. So what God

  1694. is saying is

  1695. that whereas

  1696. beforehand you

  1697. had a perfect

  1698. equilibrium in

  1699. your relationship

  1700. with each

  1701. other, now

  1702. that's all

  1703. spoiled.

  1704. And your

  1705. view of him

  1706. is going to

  1707. change and

  1708. his view of

  1709. you is going

  1710. to change and

  1711. it's all going

  1712. to become

  1713. ugly.

  1714. Again, to a

  1715. lesser or

  1716. greater extent.

  1717. Let me give you

  1718. an example of

  1719. that.

  1720. I know the

  1721. time is

  1722. going.

  1723. Let me give

  1724. you an

  1725. example of

  1726. this.

  1727. Later on in

  1728. chapter 4,

  1729. we go into

  1730. the next

  1731. chapter and

  1732. chapter 4 as

  1733. the human race

  1734. develops and

  1735. as more people

  1736. are born and

  1737. as things

  1738. happen, you

  1739. come across

  1740. this nasty

  1741. character called

  1742. Lamech.

  1743. Chapter 4,

  1744. verse 23.

  1745. And he

  1746. marries two

  1747. women.

  1748. Well, that was

  1749. a red flag for

  1750. a start.

  1751. One of them

  1752. is called

  1753. Ada and

  1754. the other

  1755. one called

  1756. Zilha.

  1757. A nasty,

  1758. nasty piece

  1759. of work.

  1760. Right?

  1761. And he

  1762. kills a man.

  1763. But it's

  1764. not just

  1765. that.

  1766. He wants

  1767. to boast

  1768. about it

  1769. to his

  1770. wives and

  1771. he says

  1772. to them,

  1773. Ada,

  1774. Zilha,

  1775. hear my

  1776. voice,

  1777. you wives

  1778. of Lamech,

  1779. listen to

  1780. what I've

  1781. said.

  1782. I've killed

  1783. a man for

  1784. wounding me,

  1785. a young man

  1786. for striking

  1787. me.

  1788. What's

  1789. this?

  1790. What's

  1791. the idea

  1792. here?

  1793. The idea

  1794. I believe

  1795. is an

  1796. exact

  1797. fulfillment

  1798. of what

  1799. God said

  1800. to Eve.

  1801. That here

  1802. is a man

  1803. and he

  1804. is threatening

  1805. his wives

  1806. and he's

  1807. saying to

  1808. them,

  1809. see what

  1810. I've done

  1811. to this

  1812. guy.

  1813. Just be

  1814. careful.

  1815. Domestic

  1816. abuse

  1817. didn't start

  1818. in the

  1819. 21st

  1820. century.

  1821. It started

  1822. way back

  1823. then.

  1824. But what

  1825. I want

  1826. to end

  1827. with is

  1828. God's

  1829. word to

  1830. the serpent.

  1831. Not only

  1832. was the

  1833. serpent to

  1834. crawl on

  1835. the ground

  1836. forever

  1837. as a

  1838. mark of

  1839. what God

  1840. had said

  1841. to him.

  1842. I don't

  1843. want to

  1844. spend any

  1845. time on

  1846. that.

  1847. I want

  1848. to spend

  1849. all the

  1850. time on

  1851. the next

  1852. bit,

  1853. the second

  1854. bit where

  1855. he says

  1856. I will

  1857. put enmity

  1858. between you

  1859. and the

  1860. woman and

  1861. between your

  1862. offspring and

  1863. her offspring.

  1864. I'm going to

  1865. split the

  1866. human race

  1867. in two.

  1868. There's going

  1869. to be race

  1870. number one

  1871. which is

  1872. going to

  1873. serve me,

  1874. the seed of

  1875. the woman,

  1876. and race

  1877. number two

  1878. which is

  1879. going to

  1880. serve you,

  1881. the seed of

  1882. the serpent.

  1883. They were

  1884. both going

  1885. to look like

  1886. sometimes two

  1887. people in the

  1888. same family

  1889. were born.

  1890. The seed of

  1891. the woman,

  1892. seed of the

  1893. serpent.

  1894. Seed of the

  1895. woman followed

  1896. the Lord.

  1897. Seed of the

  1898. serpent followed

  1899. the serpent.

  1900. I'm going to

  1901. split the

  1902. human race.

  1903. And as you

  1904. read all the

  1905. way through

  1906. the Old

  1907. Testament,

  1908. it becomes

  1909. very clear

  1910. who belonged

  1911. to which.

  1912. He says there

  1913. are going to

  1914. be enmity

  1915. between them,

  1916. there's going

  1917. to be war,

  1918. there's going

  1919. to be conflict

  1920. between these

  1921. two types of

  1922. human being,

  1923. those who

  1924. follow me and

  1925. those who

  1926. follow you.

  1927. But it's going

  1928. to end,

  1929. and here's how

  1930. it's going

  1931. to end,

  1932. because he

  1933. says it

  1934. will culminate

  1935. one day

  1936. in a man.

  1937. The reason

  1938. I know that

  1939. is because

  1940. the masculine

  1941. singular is

  1942. used in

  1943. verse 15.

  1944. He,

  1945. he,

  1946. he

  1947. shall

  1948. bruise

  1949. your

  1950. head,

  1951. and you

  1952. will

  1953. bruise

  1954. his

  1955. heel.

  1956. He'll

  1957. you.

  1958. You know

  1959. what this

  1960. is,

  1961. don't you?

  1962. It's the

  1963. first glimpse,

  1964. the first

  1965. glimmer.

  1966. It's the

  1967. wrath

  1968. remembering

  1969. mercy.

  1970. It's God's

  1971. solution to

  1972. an otherwise

  1973. hopeless,

  1974. catastrophic

  1975. event that

  1976. would have

  1977. ruined the

  1978. world

  1979. forever,

  1980. ever.

  1981. And yet

  1982. here is God

  1983. and he's

  1984. saying,

  1985. yes,

  1986. I'm going

  1987. to judge

  1988. you.

  1989. Yes,

  1990. you're going

  1991. to suffer.

  1992. There's

  1993. going to be

  1994. untold

  1995. suffering in

  1996. the human

  1997. race,

  1998. but

  1999. nevertheless,

  2000. he will

  2001. bruise

  2002. your head

  2003. and you

  2004. shall

  2005. bruise

  2006. his

  2007. heel.

  2008. And you

  2009. know when

  2010. that

  2011. happened.

  2012. You know

  2013. who the

  2014. he is.

  2015. The he

  2016. is Jesus

  2017. Christ,

  2018. the son

  2019. of God

  2020. who was

  2021. going to

  2022. come into

  2023. the world

  2024. as the

  2025. second

  2026. Adam or

  2027. the last

  2028. Adam,

  2029. some people

  2030. prefer to

  2031. call him.

  2032. And by

  2033. so

  2034. representing

  2035. his people,

  2036. he was

  2037. going to

  2038. reverse.

  2039. How was

  2040. he going

  2041. to do

  2042. it?

  2043. He was

  2044. going to

  2045. crush the

  2046. head of

  2047. the serpent

  2048. in his

  2049. death on

  2050. the cross.

  2051. By so

  2052. doing,

  2053. he has

  2054. to go

  2055. through

  2056. death

  2057. by which

  2058. the serpent

  2059. will bruise

  2060. his heel.

  2061. one.

  2062. And that

  2063. leads us

  2064. nicely, I

  2065. hope,

  2066. into tomorrow,

  2067. God willing,

  2068. where we

  2069. are going

  2070. to look at

  2071. the death

  2072. of Jesus

  2073. in terms

  2074. of his

  2075. victory

  2076. over the

  2077. evil one

  2078. as demonstrated

  2079. in the

  2080. temptation.

  2081. But so

  2082. much of

  2083. what I

  2084. said tonight,

  2085. I hope,

  2086. resonates

  2087. with all

  2088. of us.

  2089. We have

  2090. an enemy.

  2091. It goes

  2092. about like

  2093. a roaring

  2094. lion seeking

  2095. whom he

  2096. may devour.

  2097. and using

  2098. the same

  2099. kind of

  2100. tactics,

  2101. chipping

  2102. away of

  2103. the word

  2104. of God.

  2105. And tonight,

  2106. I hope that

  2107. our coming

  2108. here together

  2109. will be

  2110. as laying

  2111. hold as

  2112. never before

  2113. on the

  2114. bare word

  2115. of God

  2116. alone and

  2117. resting

  2118. in the

  2119. he, the

  2120. seed of

  2121. the woman

  2122. who is

  2123. going to

  2124. come and

  2125. one day

  2126. give his

  2127. life for

  2128. us and

  2129. thus bruise

  2130. the head

  2131. of the

  2132. serpent.

  2133. He's got

  2134. the victory.

  2135. And in

  2136. him, we

  2137. have the

  2138. victory.

  2139. And God

  2140. promises that

  2141. in his

  2142. son.

  2143. Our

  2144. father in

  2145. heaven, we

  2146. thank you for

  2147. our time

  2148. together and

  2149. we ask that

  2150. you will bless

  2151. your word to

  2152. us, bless

  2153. us as we

  2154. prepare for

  2155. to sit at

  2156. your table and

  2157. remember the

  2158. death of

  2159. Jesus.

  2160. In his

  2161. name,

  2162. amen.

  2163. Amen.

  2164. Well, we're

  2165. going to

  2166. bring our

  2167. service to

  2168. a close by

  2169. singing in

  2170. Psalm 103,

    Psalms 103:3

  2171. verse 3.

  2172. It's the

  2173. Scottish

  2174. Psalters,

  2175. page 369,

  2176. and it's

  2177. verse 3.

  2178. All thine

  2179. iniquities who

  2180. doth most

  2181. graciously forgive,

  2182. who thy

  2183. diseases all

  2184. and pains

  2185. doth heal

  2186. and thee

  2187. relieve.

  2188. And then on

  2189. to verse

  2190. verse 8.

  2191. Psalm 103,

  2192. all thine

  2193. iniquities who

  2194. doth please

  2195. stand if

  2196. you're able.

  2197. Amen.

  2198. Psalm 103,

  2199. doth please

  2200. put

  2201. iniquities who

  2202. put

  2203. iniquities who

  2204. put

  2205. iniquities who
