  1. Well, as God enables us, now we're going to revisit the passage we were exploring this morning

  2. ! Matthew chapter 9. We have already looked at verse 9, and tonight we're going to navigate

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  3. ! navigate through verses 10 to 13. In verse 10, we read, as Jesus recalculates,

  4. at table in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and

  5. his disciples. Now, we're going to consider two things, hospitable Matthew, hostile Pharisees.

  6. Tonight comes with a more practical perspective on Matthew. Our title is Matthew Profiles Matthew.

  7. Today, this morning, we considered his calling and evidence of his commitment to Jesus Christ.

  8. Hospitable Matthew, take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to thee. Take my will and make it

  9. thine. It shall be no longer mine. The melodious personal testimony of Francis Ridley Havergal,

  10. words written back in 1874, but words which in many ways sum up Matthew's testimony.

  11. Today, we looked at the A side. Tonight, it's very much the B side. Let's begin by recognizing that

  12. submission to Jesus always leads to service for Jesus. Matthew rose and followed Jesus, verse 9.

  13. Verse 10, so begins a life of consecrated service to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  14. So, the scene unfolds in verse 10. It's the domestic scene. We're taken into Matthew's home.

  15. Notice two Fs, how following Jesus and fellowship with Jesus go together. They go hand in hand,

  16. following and fellowship. Matthew extends hospitality and organizes a house fellowship in his own home.

  17. Now, in verse 10, we read that he invites many. Luke actually tells us in his account in Luke 5 that

  18. many looks like a large crowd of fellow tax collectors and various other men labeled sinners. Yes, those

  19. perceived to be, from the vantage point of the scribe and the Pharisee as notoriously wicked. Those who fell

  20. foul of God's law. You see, the Pharisees used the twofold gauge of self-righteousness and hypocrisy

  21. as they judged others. And this is no exception. But observe, if you will, the one who is at the very

  22. center of this fascinating mix of loathed and stigmatized, marginalized individuals having dinner

  23. together. It is, of course, the Lord Jesus Christ himself. And look at the picture that Matthew paints

  24. here. They are all seen reclining at table with Jesus along with his disciples. Now, let's be clear that

  25. this is a picture of open fellowship together. Oneness of fellowship, togetherness of fellowship.

  26. Reclining at table is a picture of having dinner together, and it's powerfully symbolic. This is table

  27. fellowship at its most personal. It's a scene of friends reunited. They have so much in common. No icebreakers

  28. required. No awkward conversations here. Not at all. There is harmony in this fellowship. Yes, there is unity

  29. in its diversity, you might say. And Matthew doesn't hold back. Let's be clear. It's not a light meal that is

  30. being served here. Luke spells this out for us in his account. Luke 5, 29, Matthew made a great feast

  31. feast in his house. We're talking an extravagant banquet. It's not a budget meal. No, it's a la carte.

  32. And Jesus is Matthew's guest of honor. And isn't it fascinating, isn't it heartwarming,

  33. too, that Jesus doesn't decline Matthew's invitation to his infamous home, labeled ceremonially unclean.

  34. No, he accepts Matthew's hospitality gladly. And in doing so, something significant happens.

  35. Rabbinic regulations go out the window with immediate effect. Now, what do we mean by that?

  36. Well, by accepting this invitation, by reclining at table, by eating with this interesting group of men,

  37. it's immediately apparent that Jesus is not minded to comply with the rabbi's rulebook. Think of the

  38. Pharisee's code of conduct, which states clearly that any contact with sinners would make Jesus a sinner by

  39. association. But notice that there's so much more than mere contact here. There is personal interaction

  40. going on. Now, this kind of table fellowship was strictly forbidden. But for those who are reclining at table with Jesus,

  41. along with Matthew and the disciples, tax collectors, sinners alike, it is a powerful and personal symbol of

  42. Jesus' friendship and fellowship and association and acceptance of such despised individuals.

  43. You see, Jesus immediately identifies with this room full of outcasts. And he doesn't shy away from it.

  44. No, he engages with it. So picture this, if you will. Matthew here and his guests reclining on a couch that extends around the room.

  45. The host takes the central place. Yes, his name is Matthew. And the guest of honor is Jesus of Nazareth. And there he is by Matthew's side.

  46. And the remaining guests, well, they form a semicircle. And every eye in Matthew's house is fixed on Jesus. They are hanging on to his every word.

  47. Can you imagine how engaging the Q&A would have been? The questions that they would have been asking Jesus?

  48. And the answers in response to their questions. Every question answered with clarity.

  49. What does this scene tell us about the host? What are we to glean about Matthew here?

  50. What does this tell us about his hospitality?

  51. Well, it tells us, surely, that Matthew is on fire for Jesus.

  52. His heart burns within him.

  53. And having had his heart opened, melted by the love and mercy of Jesus Christ at the tax collector's booth,

  54. now we're beginning to see grace at work, expressing itself as it will.

  55. After all, faith without works is dead, James tells us.

  56. Well, that's not the case with Matthew.

  57. You see, from a theological perspective, faith that is not followed by action, by doing,

  58. in the Christian life is counterproductive.

  59. It is of no use, and it is as good as dead.

  60. But that's not what we are witnessing here.

  61. His home has been, is now wide open.

  62. First his heart, then his home in that order.

  63. What does this convey to us?

  64. You see, when we follow Jesus,

  65. when we follow Jesus, we instinctively,

  66. and this is what grace does,

  67. when we begin to follow Jesus,

  68. maybe you can recall this from your own Christian perspective,

  69. as you began your Christian pilgrimage.

  70. Remember these early days when your heart was on fire for Christ.

  71. What do you recall?

  72. Well, we see it here.

  73. When we follow Jesus,

  74. we instinctively

  75. long to draw others into fellowship with us

  76. who know not Jesus.

  77. You see, following Christ and Christian fellowship

  78. are complementary components,

  79. and we see it here.

  80. Again, we drew a comparison this morning

  81. between Matthew and Lydia in Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  82. You'll record how,

  83. you'll recall how in Acts 16,

  84. we read of how the Lord opened Lydia's heart

  85. to respond to Paul's gospel message,

  86. and when she and the members of her household were baptized,

  87. Luke tells us of what happens next.

  88. She invited us to her home.

  89. First her heart,

  90. then her home is opened.

  91. If you consider me a believer in the Lord,

  92. she said,

  93. come and stay at my house.

  94. And Paul says,

  95. and she persuaded us.

  96. She said it like she meant it.

  97. And we gladly accepted her hospitality.

  98. Submission to Jesus

  99. and service for Jesus

  100. go together.

  101. Notice too that Matthew

  102. extends Christian hospitality

  103. without discrimination.

  104. Notice here

  105. that his open heart

  106. is longing

  107. to provide an open home,

  108. particularly for the displaced,

  109. as he once was.

  110. All are welcome.

  111. Nobody is barred.

  112. What does this say

  113. about Matthew's missional objective,

  114. and what can we glean from it?

  115. Well, his key objective

  116. is to introduce others

  117. to Jesus Christ.

  118. And notice that he wastes

  119. no time in witnessing to others.

  120. And notice this too.

  121. He doesn't turn his back

  122. on his former work colleagues

  123. or snub them in any way.

  124. No, he reaches out to them.

  125. They are the ones

  126. who are invited for dinner

  127. and to have fellowship

  128. with Jesus Christ.

  129. And I believe that Matthew

  130. records this detail for us

  131. so that we too

  132. might be encouraged

  133. to do likewise.

  134. There is something

  135. very winsome,

  136. very engaging,

  137. and attractive

  138. about Matthew's life,

  139. testimony,

  140. and witness,

  141. even at this very early stage

  142. of his Christian life.

  143. Notice what he doesn't do.

  144. Matthew doesn't

  145. de-friend

  146. or ditch

  147. his work colleagues,

  148. former friends.

  149. They're not in any way

  150. cut off.

  151. They are not cancelled.

  152. No.

  153. Instead,

  154. he strengthens

  155. his ties with them

  156. by welcoming them

  157. into his new home,

  158. into his new world,

  159. into his changed life

  160. of complete transformation.

  161. And notice that there is no bias.

  162. His door is wide open

  163. for all.

  164. He leads by example.

  165. Matthew's home

  166. is a beautiful drop-in center

  167. for anyone passing.

  168. Come in, he says.

  169. Friendship

  170. have fellowship

  171. with us,

  172. and they all seem

  173. to accept

  174. his open invitation.

  175. And I believe

  176. that we are encouraged

  177. to follow Matthew's example.

  178. We too are encouraged

  179. to retain friendships

  180. in the Christian life

  181. wherever possible.

  182. I know that when

  183. a person becomes

  184. a Christian,

  185. it's not always possible

  186. to retain

  187. every friendship.

  188. Some ties

  189. must be severed.

  190. But many friendships

  191. can and should

  192. be retained.

  193. I sometimes

  194. get asked the question,

  195. did you lose

  196. many friends

  197. when you became

  198. a Christian?

  199. Well, that's a good question.

  200. I suppose

  201. the answer to that

  202. is yes.

  203. to some extent,

  204. but that need not be

  205. the answer

  206. that rolls off

  207. our lips.

  208. I want us

  209. to ponder this.

  210. Loss of friendship

  211. can be self-inflicted

  212. when we are the ones

  213. who walk away

  214. and keep our distance.

  215. reflect on that,

  216. if you will.

  217. Because Matthew

  218. doesn't disengage.

  219. He doesn't

  220. detach himself

  221. from those

  222. who were his

  223. former colleagues

  224. and friends,

  225. not at all,

  226. and neither

  227. should you and I.

  228. There is unity

  229. in the diversity

  230. of this fellowship,

  231. as we said

  232. a moment ago.

  233. So, as we conclude

  234. this,

  235. our first point,

  236. it's been

  237. in the main

  238. positive,

  239. but we now

  240. come to a negative

  241. because not

  242. everyone

  243. is happy

  244. or feeling

  245. the harmony

  246. of this

  247. fellowship,

  248. and they are

  249. the hostile

  250. Pharisees

  251. we meet

  252. time and again

  253. on the pages

  254. of the Gospels.

  255. Matthew's Gospel

  256. is no exception.

  257. We meet them

  258. across

  259. the terrain

  260. of

  261. Matthew,

  262. Mark,

  263. Luke,

  264. and John.

  265. The Pharisees,

  266. verse 11.

  267. The scribes

  268. are there too.

  269. Mark and Luke

  270. tell us that,

  271. but they are one

  272. and the same.

  273. We see them

  274. lurking in the

  275. background.

  276. They prowl

  277. around,

  278. always keeping

  279. a close eye

  280. on the Lord

  281. Jesus,

  282. monitoring his

  283. every move

  284. and words

  285. with a very

  286. fine

  287. tooth comb.

  288. They are

  289. forensic in their

  290. analysis,

  291. and they observe

  292. here with a

  293. contempt-filled

  294. hostility.

  295. verse 11.

  296. The question.

  297. The question,

  298. why,

  299. they ask.

  300. Why does

  301. your teacher,

  302. they ask

  303. the disciples

  304. of Jesus,

  305. why does

  306. your teacher

  307. eat

  308. with tax

  309. collectors

  310. and

  311. sinners?

  312. Now,

  313. the point

  314. of emphasis

  315. in the

  316. question

  317. is that

  318. three-letter

  319. word

  320. eat.

  321. Why

  322. is it so

  323. significant?

  324. Well,

  325. it doesn't

  326. go unnoticed,

  327. does it,

  328. that Jesus

  329. is eating

  330. with tax

  331. collectors

  332. and sinners.

  333. You see,

  334. the act

  335. of eating

  336. is so,

  337. so significant

  338. because it's

  339. tangible evidence

  340. that Jesus

  341. is cementing

  342. his fellowship

  343. with outsiders,

  344. with the

  345. outcast.

  346. Eating

  347. together

  348. in table

  349. fellowship

  350. mode

  351. is in

  352. effect,

  353. and I

  354. quote,

  355. extended

  356. interpersonal

  357. association.

  358. and it's

  359. taboo

  360. from a

  361. rabbinic

  362. perspective.

  363. Think,

  364. for example,

  365. of how

  366. Luke chapter

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  367. 15 begins

  368. before we

  369. come to

  370. the three-fold

  371. parable

  372. of

  373. culminating

  374. with the

  375. lost son,

  376. the prodigal

  377. son.

  378. How does

  379. Luke begin

  380. that chapter?

  381. Now,

  382. the tax

  383. collectors

  384. and sinners

  385. were all

  386. gathering

  387. round

  388. to hear

  389. Jesus,

  390. but the

  391. Pharisees

  392. and the

  393. teachers

  394. of the

  395. law

  396. grumbled.

  397. Why?

  398. Why were

  399. they grumbling,

  400. you might

  401. ask?

  402. They

  403. grumbled

  404. because,

  405. in their

  406. own words,

  407. this man,

  408. and isn't

  409. the tone

  410. so disparaging,

  411. this man

  412. receives

  413. or welcomes

  414. sinners

  415. and eats

  416. with them.

  417. As if to

  418. say,

  419. how

  420. outrageously

  421. offensive,

  422. how unorthodox

  423. in the

  424. extreme.

  425. And if you're

  426. going to

  427. continue

  428. reading Luke's

  429. gospel,

  430. it's not

  431. insignificant

  432. that there

  433. is much

  434. grumbling

  435. again from

  436. the scribes

  437. and the

  438. Pharisees

  439. just four

  440. chapters

  441. later,

  442. you come

  443. to Luke

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  444. chapter 19

  445. where Jesus

  446. is seen

  447. going into

  448. a certain

  449. house to

  450. be a

  451. guest.

  452. Now,

  453. house,

  454. guest,

  455. houseguest,

  456. again implies

  457. hospitality,

  458. food,

  459. and the

  460. act of

  461. eating.

  462. He is

  463. going into

  464. a certain

  465. house to

  466. be a

  467. guest of

  468. a man

  469. who is

  470. a sinner

  471. and the

  472. sinner's

  473. name,

  474. you've

  475. guessed it,

  476. Zacchaeus.

  477. His

  478. occupation,

  479. not insignificant,

  480. chief tax

  481. collector,

  482. in a

  483. similar

  484. mode

  485. to

  486. Matthew,

  487. deja vu.

  488. Jesus

  489. interacts

  490. personally

  491. with Matthew's

  492. guests.

  493. That's the

  494. other thing

  495. that's so

  496. striking about

  497. this passage.

  498. notice that

  499. he doesn't

  500. discriminate

  501. against any

  502. of those

  503. who are

  504. in the

  505. room,

  506. unlike

  507. the scribes

  508. and the

  509. Pharisees.

  510. You can't

  511. help but

  512. draw comparisons.

  513. You compare,

  514. you contrast.

  515. You see,

  516. Matthew's

  517. friends,

  518. most if not

  519. all of them,

  520. when it

  521. comes to

  522. professional

  523. reputation,

  524. believe me,

  525. they had

  526. the poorest

  527. of professional

  528. reputations.

  529. But does

  530. that hinder

  531. the Lord

  532. Jesus?

  533. No,

  534. he will not

  535. distance himself

  536. from the

  537. outcast.

  538. He will

  539. by no

  540. means

  541. cast

  542. out

  543. the

  544. outcast.

  545. Instead,

  546. he reaches

  547. out to

  548. them.

  549. He befriends

  550. them lovingly

  551. and graciously.

  552. It's

  553. remarkable.

  554. And again,

  555. I believe

  556. that we

  557. are encouraged

  558. from a

  559. practical

  560. perspective

  561. to do

  562. likewise.

  563. Do you

  564. know,

  565. sometimes we

  566. are inclined

  567. to distance

  568. ourselves

  569. from those

  570. whose reputation

  571. goes before

  572. them.

  573. Sometimes our

  574. hearts just

  575. ooze with

  576. prejudice

  577. and discrimination.

  578. We're afraid

  579. to befriend

  580. that certain

  581. individual

  582. so we will

  583. give him

  584. or her

  585. a wider

  586. birth.

  587. We're afraid

  588. of how

  589. that person

  590. might react

  591. to any

  592. attempts on

  593. our part

  594. to reach

  595. out to

  596. them.

  597. There might

  598. be a

  599. backlash.

  600. There might

  601. be a

  602. negative

  603. reaction.

  604. We do

  605. it all

  606. the time.

  607. But you

  608. see,

  609. behind a

  610. veneer

  611. of poor

  612. or bad

  613. reputation

  614. as we

  615. see here,

  616. the very

  617. individuals

  618. that we

  619. are detaching

  620. ourselves

  621. from may

  622. well be

  623. the very

  624. ones who

  625. are more

  626. receptive to

  627. the gospel

  628. and need

  629. to hear

  630. and may

  631. even long

  632. to hear

  633. the message

  634. of the

  635. gospel

  636. and have

  637. the love

  638. and tender

  639. mercy of

  640. Jesus Christ

  641. extended to

  642. them.

  643. So let

  644. me just

  645. digress

  646. just for

  647. a moment.

  648. Remember

  649. Nathaniel?

  650. Nathaniel

  651. in John

    John 1 chapter mention

  652. chapter 1,

  653. Philip

  654. reaches out

  655. to him,

  656. but Nathaniel's

  657. reputation

  658. goes before

  659. him as

  660. someone who

  661. is somewhat

  662. skeptical of

  663. not bordering

  664. on cynical.

  665. But Philip

  666. doesn't give

  667. up on

  668. him.

  669. Nathaniel

  670. is somewhat

  671. rude and

  672. indifferent.

  673. As Philip

  674. tries to reach

  675. out to

  676. Nathaniel,

  677. the moment

  678. he speaks

  679. of Jesus

  680. of Nazareth,

  681. Nathaniel

  682. says in

  683. that disparaging

  684. tone,

  685. really?

  686. Can anything

  687. good come

  688. out of

  689. Nazareth?

  690. Are you

  691. serious,

  692. Philip?

  693. That's

  694. ridiculous.

  695. That's

  696. outrageous.

  697. So what

  698. does Philip

  699. do?

  700. Does he

  701. write him

  702. off?

  703. Does he

  704. walk away?

  705. No,

  706. he says,

  707. Nathaniel,

  708. I insist

  709. that you

  710. come and

  711. see.

  712. Come and

  713. see for

  714. yourself.

  715. Follow

  716. me.

  717. You see,

  718. befriending

  719. Nathaniel is

  720. clearly

  721. challenging

  722. for Philip,

  723. but Philip

  724. is rewarded

  725. for his

  726. prayerful

  727. persistence

  728. and perseverance.

  729. He persuades

  730. Nathaniel to

  731. come to

  732. Jesus.

  733. And Nathaniel

  734. ultimately

  735. becomes,

  736. doesn't he,

  737. a disciple

  738. of the

  739. Lord Jesus

  740. Christ.

  741. Even

  742. when someone

  743. is less

  744. than receptive,

  745. when our

  746. one-to-one

  747. evangelism is

  748. intentional

  749. and purposeful,

  750. and if we're

  751. prepared not

  752. to give up

  753. too easily,

  754. we see fruit

  755. for our

  756. labor.

  757. Anyway,

  758. back to

  759. the scribes

  760. and the

  761. Pharisees,

  762. as they

  763. clearly feel,

  764. don't they,

  765. that Jesus

  766. should have

  767. at least

  768. understood

  769. that it

  770. was

  771. unorthodox

  772. for him

  773. to recline

  774. a table

  775. and eat

  776. with

  777. contaminated

  778. men in

  779. this

  780. ceremonially

  781. unclean,

  782. filthy

  783. environment.

  784. By

  785. comparison,

  786. if you

  787. had

  788. attended

  789. a high-end

  790. dinner party

  791. hosted by

  792. a Pharisee

  793. and a

  794. scribe

  795. and a

  796. Sadducee,

  797. well,

  798. they were

  799. likened to

  800. an exclusive

  801. society

  802. for the

  803. righteous,

  804. for the

  805. holier-than-thou

  806. brigade,

  807. like-minded,

  808. upright,

  809. pious men

  810. of standing

  811. and for

  812. nobody else.

  813. Nobody else

  814. is welcome.

  815. But look at

  816. verse 12.

  817. Look at how

  818. Jesus responds

  819. to their

  820. hostility.

  821. Isn't Jesus

  822. forthright?

  823. And isn't it

  824. peppered

  825. with irony?

  826. because Jesus

  827. goes on to

  828. draw a

  829. telling

  830. comparison

  831. between

  832. the Pharisee

  833. and those

  834. with whom

  835. he is

  836. having

  837. fellowship.

  838. Now,

  839. this is how

  840. we're going

  841. to conclude

  842. tonight,

  843. but it's

  844. worth

  845. looking at

  846. in a

  847. little

  848. detail.

  849. Let's

  850. just,

  851. again,

  852. remind

  853. ourselves

  854. of what

  855. Jesus

  856. says

  857. in

  858. verse

  859. 12.

  860. Those

  861. who are

  862. well,

  863. who have

  864. no need

  865. of a

  866. physician,

  867. but those

  868. who are

  869. sick.

  870. Now,

  871. tax

  872. collectors

  873. and their

  874. associates,

  875. they are

  876. the sick,

  877. the spiritually

  878. ill,

  879. and here

  880. they are

  881. gathering

  882. in Matthew's

  883. home.

  884. He,

  885. the Lord

  886. Jesus Christ,

  887. is the

  888. good

  889. physician

  890. they need

  891. and he

  892. will attend

  893. to them.

  894. He will

  895. bring healing

  896. to their

  897. troubled

  898. souls.

  899. Yes,

  900. here we

  901. see Jesus,

  902. the good

  903. physician,

  904. the good

  905. shepherd,

  906. the good

  907. physician,

  908. because from

  909. his surgery

  910. comes

  911. salvation

  912. for the

  913. lost.

  914. He has

  915. come to

  916. seek and

  917. to save

  918. the lost.

  919. From his

  920. dispensary,

  921. from his

  922. divine

  923. dispensary,

  924. comes the

  925. remedy of

  926. redemption

  927. for those

  928. considered

  929. beyond

  930. redemption.

  931. By

  932. contrast,

  933. those who

  934. consider

  935. themselves

  936. to be

  937. healthy,

  938. in other

  939. words,

  940. perfectly

  941. well,

  942. under the

  943. guise of

  944. false

  945. piety,

  946. and have

  947. in their

  948. own

  949. considered

  950. opinion,

  951. no need

  952. for

  953. cleansing

  954. from sin,

  955. see

  956. no need

  957. whatsoever

  958. for the

  959. healing

  960. intervention

  961. of this

  962. heavenly

  963. physician

  964. who is

  965. passing

  966. by.

  967. Such

  968. was

  969. the

  970. attitude

  971. of

  972. the

  973. religious

  974. leaders

  975. we are

  976. engaging

  977. with here,

  978. because the

  979. scourge

  980. of

  981. self-righteousness

  982. is theirs.

  983. They are

  984. blinded

  985. to their

  986. leprosy

  987. of sin

  988. within.

  989. Yes,

  990. the very

  991. ones who

  992. will label

  993. the leper

  994. unclean,

  995. blinded

  996. to their

  997. leprosy

  998. of sin

  999. within.

  1000. They live

  1001. their

  1002. religious

  1003. lives

  1004. on a

  1005. self-elevated

  1006. pedestal

  1007. of

  1008. contradictory

  1009. piety.

  1010. They are

  1011. deluded

  1012. and they

  1013. are in

  1014. denial,

  1015. and the

  1016. Lord Jesus

  1017. say so

  1018. without

  1019. holding

  1020. back.

  1021. No

  1022. filter

  1023. here.

  1024. Jesus

  1025. declares

  1026. that he

  1027. has

  1028. come

  1029. not

  1030. to

  1031. call

  1032. the

  1033. righteous,

  1034. the

  1035. self-righteous

  1036. scribes

  1037. and Pharisees.

  1038. No,

  1039. he has

  1040. come

  1041. to

  1042. call

  1043. sinners,

  1044. those

  1045. who

  1046. fully

  1047. recognize

  1048. their

  1049. urgent

  1050. and

  1051. pressing

  1052. need

  1053. to

  1054. repent

  1055. of

  1056. their

  1057. sins

  1058. and

  1059. find

  1060. salvation

  1061. in

  1062. Jesus

  1063. Christ

  1064. and

  1065. be

  1066. clothed

  1067. with

  1068. the

  1069. imputed

  1070. righteousness

  1071. of

  1072. God.

  1073. Now,

  1074. we read

  1075. from the

  1076. beginning

  1077. of this

  1078. chapter.

  1079. Why?

  1080. Well,

  1081. think of

  1082. the phrase

  1083. that the

  1084. title of

  1085. some of

  1086. Calvin's

  1087. commentaries

  1088. on the

  1089. Gospels,

  1090. a harmony

  1091. of

  1092. the

  1093. Gospels.

  1094. And there

  1095. is harmony

  1096. here,

  1097. there always

  1098. is.

  1099. There is

  1100. logic

  1101. to

  1102. chapter

  1103. 9

  1104. beginning

  1105. with

  1106. the

  1107. episode

  1108. concerning

  1109. the

  1110. paralytic.

  1111. And then

  1112. we transition

  1113. to Matthew

  1114. and into

  1115. Matthew's

  1116. home.

  1117. The

  1118. words

  1119. of

  1120. Jesus

  1121. speak

  1122. into

  1123. a much

  1124. wider

  1125. context.

  1126. And more

  1127. often than

  1128. not,

  1129. it's like

  1130. that as

  1131. we read

  1132. through

  1133. the

  1134. Gospels.

  1135. So,

  1136. verse 1

  1137. here in

  1138. chapter 9,

  1139. let's

  1140. just follow

  1141. it briefly.

  1142. When a

  1143. paralyzed

  1144. man,

  1145. carried

  1146. by four

  1147. friends,

  1148. is lowered

  1149. to Jesus

  1150. through an

  1151. opening in

  1152. the roof

  1153. of a

  1154. house dug

  1155. by those

  1156. carrying

  1157. him,

  1158. what happens?

  1159. Jesus

  1160. responds to

  1161. their faith

  1162. by healing

  1163. the

  1164. incapacitated

  1165. body of

  1166. the

  1167. paralytic.

  1168. Is that

  1169. it?

  1170. No.

  1171. By no

  1172. means.

  1173. Notice

  1174. where Matthew

  1175. places the

  1176. emphasis

  1177. here.

  1178. The key

  1179. issue

  1180. is the

  1181. paralytic's

  1182. spiritual

  1183. sickness.

  1184. It's his

  1185. sinful

  1186. condition

  1187. that comes

  1188. under the

  1189. spotlight.

  1190. Primarily

  1191. his soul.

  1192. The

  1193. secondary

  1194. issue

  1195. is his

  1196. physical

  1197. situation,

  1198. his

  1199. incapacitated

  1200. body,

  1201. disabled

  1202. as it

  1203. is.

  1204. But look

  1205. at how

  1206. Jesus,

  1207. the good

  1208. physician,

  1209. intervenes

  1210. in verse

  1211. 2.

  1212. Take

  1213. heart,

  1214. my son,

  1215. your sins

  1216. are

  1217. forgiven.

  1218. Bishop

  1219. Ryle,

  1220. J.C.

  1221. Ryle,

  1222. calls Jesus

  1223. in this

  1224. context,

  1225. the healer

  1226. of sin,

  1227. sick

  1228. souls.

  1229. And so

  1230. he is.

  1231. Because the

  1232. paralytic

  1233. we see

  1234. here,

  1235. yes,

  1236. he's

  1237. restored to

  1238. health.

  1239. Physically,

  1240. he's on his

  1241. feet.

  1242. But in

  1243. particular,

  1244. especially,

  1245. you might

  1246. say,

  1247. from a

  1248. spiritual

  1249. perspective,

  1250. which is

  1251. the key

  1252. point of

  1253. emphasis

  1254. in his

  1255. personal

  1256. encounter

  1257. with

  1258. Jesus.

  1259. In other

  1260. words,

  1261. it's not

  1262. the self-declared

  1263. healthy

  1264. who need

  1265. a doctor,

  1266. but those

  1267. who are

  1268. ill.

  1269. And those

  1270. who are

  1271. unable

  1272. to see

  1273. with clarity

  1274. their illness

  1275. for what

  1276. it is.

  1277. Sick

  1278. here points

  1279. to

  1280. outcasts

  1281. who

  1282. recognize

  1283. that they

  1284. have a

  1285. pressing,

  1286. urgent need

  1287. for healing.

  1288. You see,

  1289. Matthew was

  1290. just like

  1291. the paralyzed

  1292. man we're

  1293. introduced to

  1294. at the

  1295. beginning

  1296. of chapter

  1297. nine,

  1298. just like

  1299. him discriminated

  1300. against,

  1301. by the

  1302. righteous,

  1303. the self-righteous

  1304. teachers of

  1305. the law,

  1306. who have no

  1307. spiritual

  1308. discernment

  1309. or compassion

  1310. for sinners.

  1311. They don't.

  1312. Not an

  1313. iota.

  1314. But Jesus

  1315. Christ

  1316. does.

  1317. Unclean

  1318. Matthew

  1319. has been

  1320. cleansed.

  1321. He has

  1322. been forgiven

  1323. through Jesus

  1324. Christ.

  1325. as was

  1326. the paralytic

  1327. before him.

  1328. You see,

  1329. the spiritual

  1330. blindness,

  1331. pride,

  1332. and prejudice

  1333. of the

  1334. Pharisees

  1335. means that

  1336. they fail

  1337. to recognize

  1338. who Jesus

  1339. really is.

  1340. Verse 6,

  1341. the Son

  1342. of Man

  1343. who has

  1344. authority

  1345. on earth

  1346. to forgive

  1347. sins.

  1348. The Son

  1349. of Man

  1350. is the

  1351. Son of God.

  1352. God

  1353. manifest

  1354. in the

  1355. flesh,

  1356. God

  1357. incarnate,

  1358. but He

  1359. is.

  1360. We see

  1361. Him here

  1362. in Matthew's

  1363. home.

  1364. He is

  1365. Emmanuel.

  1366. He is

  1367. God

  1368. with

  1369. us.

  1370. So again,

  1371. verse 7,

  1372. one final

  1373. reference to

  1374. the paralytic.

  1375. because

  1376. whilst the

  1377. healed

  1378. paralytic

  1379. took up

  1380. his mat

  1381. and walked

  1382. out in

  1383. full view

  1384. of them

  1385. all,

  1386. what happens?

  1387. Everyone

  1388. praises

  1389. God

  1390. in unison?

  1391. Not quite.

  1392. The scribes

  1393. and the Pharisees

  1394. beg

  1395. to differ.

  1396. They are

  1397. furious.

  1398. They are

  1399. incensed

  1400. at what

  1401. unfolds.

  1402. Back to

  1403. verse 13

  1404. here.

  1405. We have

  1406. the

  1407. rebuke

  1408. and it

  1409. is sharp.

  1410. What does

  1411. Jesus say

  1412. to them?

  1413. Go

  1414. and learn

  1415. what

  1416. this

  1417. means.

  1418. And then

  1419. He quotes

  1420. the prophet

  1421. Hosea.

    Hosea 6:6

  1422. Chapter

  1423. 6,

  1424. verse 6,

  1425. I

  1426. desire

  1427. mercy,

  1428. not

  1429. sacrifice.

  1430. Whoa!

  1431. Reality

  1432. check.

  1433. It's

  1434. such a

  1435. sobering

  1436. call

  1437. to

  1438. reflection

  1439. and

  1440. serious

  1441. consideration.

  1442. You see,

  1443. Jesus,

  1444. as He

  1445. quotes

  1446. the words

  1447. of the

  1448. prophet,

  1449. highlights

  1450. the

  1451. danger

  1452. of a

  1453. religious

  1454. persuasion

  1455. that is

  1456. purely

  1457. external

  1458. in which

  1459. ritual

  1460. ceremonial

  1461. demands

  1462. take the

  1463. place

  1464. of

  1465. mercy.

  1466. Now,

  1467. the word

  1468. mercy

  1469. is taken

  1470. from the

  1471. vocabulary

  1472. of covenant

  1473. theology.

  1474. It's a

  1475. key Hebrew

  1476. word.

  1477. We sang it

  1478. repeatedly

  1479. tonight in

  1480. our Psalms.

  1481. It's the

  1482. word

  1483. chesed.

  1484. it's the

  1485. language of

  1486. loving

  1487. kindness,

  1488. tender

  1489. mercy,

  1490. faithfulness,

  1491. steadfast

  1492. love.

  1493. Mercy,

  1494. not

  1495. merit.

  1496. And it's

  1497. conspicuous

  1498. by its

  1499. absence,

  1500. isn't it,

  1501. in the

  1502. scribe

  1503. and the

  1504. Pharisee.

  1505. mercy.

  1506. But anyway,

  1507. it's not

  1508. about them,

  1509. is it?

  1510. Let's

  1511. conclude.

  1512. This is

  1513. all about

  1514. the personal

  1515. dynamic of

  1516. the gospel.

  1517. That's what

  1518. we've explored

  1519. this morning

  1520. and this

  1521. evening,

  1522. and let's

  1523. now

  1524. home in

  1525. on the

  1526. final sentence

  1527. we have

  1528. in this

  1529. paragraph.

  1530. What does

  1531. it say?

  1532. we are

  1533. reminded,

  1534. aren't we,

  1535. in no uncertain

  1536. terms,

  1537. that Jesus

  1538. came not

  1539. to call

  1540. the righteous,

  1541. but

  1542. sinners,

  1543. but

  1544. sinners.

  1545. Ordinary

  1546. individual,

  1547. fishermen,

  1548. tax collectors,

  1549. paralytics,

  1550. lepers,

  1551. and so

  1552. on and

  1553. so forth.

  1554. You know,

  1555. as you read

  1556. of Matthew,

  1557. you might

  1558. say that

  1559. long,

  1560. long,

  1561. long before

  1562. John

  1563. Newton

  1564. penned

  1565. the words

  1566. that we're

  1567. so familiar

  1568. with,

  1569. Matthew

  1570. would have

  1571. been saying

  1572. that evening

  1573. as he

  1574. closed

  1575. the door

  1576. as the

  1577. last guest

  1578. leaves,

  1579. and as

  1580. he turns

  1581. the lights

  1582. out,

  1583. he might

  1584. have said,

  1585. amazing grace,

  1586. how sweet

  1587. the sound

  1588. that saved

  1589. a wretch

  1590. like me

  1591. and others

  1592. like me

  1593. in this room

  1594. this evening,

  1595. for I once

  1596. was lost,

  1597. but now

  1598. I'm found,

  1599. I was once

  1600. blind,

  1601. but now

  1602. I see.

  1603. I mention

  1604. John

  1605. Newton,

  1606. his

  1607. gravestone

  1608. is telling.

  1609. In

  1610. Olney,

  1611. in England,

  1612. you will

  1613. find John

  1614. Newton's

  1615. tombstone,

  1616. as it's

  1617. often called,

  1618. and if you

  1619. read it,

  1620. it's a

  1621. fascinating

  1622. read.

  1623. John

  1624. Newton,

  1625. Clark,

  1626. once an

  1627. infidel,

  1628. and Libertine,

  1629. that's someone

  1630. who is

  1631. riotous in the

  1632. extreme,

  1633. a profligate,

  1634. a servant

  1635. of slaves

  1636. in Africa,

  1637. was by the

  1638. rich mercy,

  1639. the chesed,

  1640. of our Lord

  1641. and Savior

  1642. Jesus Christ,

  1643. preserved,

  1644. restored,

  1645. pardoned,

  1646. and appointed

  1647. to preach

  1648. the faith

  1649. he had

  1650. long labored

  1651. to destroy.

  1652. Now,

  1653. before you

  1654. close your

  1655. Bible,

  1656. look at

  1657. how chapter

  1658. 10 in

  1659. Matthew's

  1660. Gospel

  1661. begins.

  1662. Notice

  1663. there

  1664. that the

  1665. names of

  1666. the twelve

  1667. apostles are

  1668. highlighted.

  1669. Simon,

  1670. who is

  1671. called

  1672. Peter,

  1673. Andrew,

  1674. his brother,

  1675. James,

  1676. the son of

  1677. Zebedee,

  1678. and John,

  1679. his brother,

  1680. Philip,

  1681. and Bartholomew,

  1682. Thomas,

  1683. and Matthew,

  1684. the tax

  1685. collector.

  1686. Hmm.

  1687. Matthew,

  1688. the tax

  1689. collector.

  1690. We said

  1691. this morning

  1692. that names

  1693. stick,

  1694. but it's

  1695. also a

  1696. wonderful

  1697. reminder

  1698. of the

  1699. one who

  1700. saves to

  1701. the uttermost.

  1702. Yes,

  1703. tax collectors

  1704. too are

  1705. numbered in

  1706. the register

  1707. of which we

  1708. sang earlier

  1709. in Psalm

  1710. 87.

  1711. Can you

  1712. imagine

  1713. a

  1714. gravestone

  1715. on the

  1716. outskirts

  1717. of

  1718. somewhere

  1719. in

  1720. Galilee,

  1721. the

  1722. gravestone

  1723. of

  1724. Matthew,

  1725. the tax

  1726. collector?

  1727. Can you

  1728. imagine

  1729. what might

  1730. have been

  1731. written on

  1732. it?

  1733. Probably

  1734. something

  1735. similar to

  1736. John

  1737. Newton,

  1738. you might

  1739. say.

  1740. Matthew,

  1741. Levi,

  1742. once a

  1743. publican,

  1744. a tax

  1745. collector,

  1746. so he

  1747. was,

  1748. was by

  1749. the rich

  1750. mercy of

  1751. our Lord

  1752. and Savior

  1753. preserved,

  1754. restored,

  1755. pardoned,

  1756. and appointed

  1757. as one

  1758. of the

  1759. twelve,

  1760. an apostle

  1761. no less,

  1762. and commissioned

  1763. to write

  1764. under the

  1765. superintendence

  1766. of God

  1767. the Holy

  1768. Spirit,

  1769. the gospel

  1770. according

  1771. to

  1772. Matthew.

  1773. Amen.

  1774. Let's pray

  1775. together.

  1776. gracious

  1777. God,

  1778. we

  1779. praise

  1780. you

  1781. for

  1782. your

  1783. faithfulness

  1784. and

  1785. for

  1786. your

  1787. covenant

  1788. love,

  1789. steadfast,

  1790. unfailing.

  1791. We

  1792. praise

  1793. you

  1794. for

  1795. how

  1796. you

  1797. have

  1798. given

  1799. us

  1800. such

  1801. moving

  1802. accounts

  1803. of

  1804. individuals

  1805. like

  1806. Matthew

  1807. who

  1808. came

  1809. to

  1810. faith

  1811. and

  1812. as

  1813. he

  1814. followed

  1815. so

  1816. he

  1817. reached

  1818. out

  1819. to

  1820. others

  1821. longing

  1822. to

  1823. bring

  1824. whoever

  1825. might

  1826. come

  1827. into

  1828. fellowship

  1829. with

  1830. Jesus

  1831. Christ.

  1832. A

  1833. wonderful

  1834. example

  1835. for us

  1836. to

  1837. follow

  1838. and

  1839. may

  1840. we

  1841. be

  1842. moved

  1843. this

  1844. evening

  1845. to

  1846. live

  1847. our

  1848. lives

  1849. for

  1850. Jesus

  1851. Christ

  1852. so

  1853. that

  1854. we

  1855. too

  1856. might

  1857. say

  1858. for

  1859. to

  1860. me

  1861. to

  1862. live

  1863. is

  1864. Christ

  1865. and

  1866. to

  1867. die

  1868. is

  1869. gain

  1870. for

  1871. we

  1872. ask

  1873. these

  1874. things

  1875. in

  1876. his

  1877. name

  1878. and

  1879. for

  1880. his

  1881. sake

  1882. amen

  1883. well

  1884. let's

  1885. exalt

  1886. the

  1887. name

  1888. of

  1889. Jesus

  1890. as

  1891. we

  1892. sing

  1893. psalm

  1894. 72

  1895. to

  1896. his

  1897. praise

  1898. the

  1899. Scottish

  1900. Psalter

  1901. version

  1902. of

  1903. psalm

  1904. 72

  1905. at

  1906. verse

  1907. 17

  1908. on

  1909. page

  1910. 314

  1911. his

  1912. name

  1913. forever

  1914. shall

  1915. endure

  1916. last

  1917. like

  1918. the

  1919. sun

  1920. it

  1921. shall

  1922. men

  1923. shall

  1924. be

  1925. blessed

  1926. in

  1927. him

  1928. and

  1929. blessed

  1930. all

  1931. nations

  1932. shall

  1933. him

  1934. call

  1935. in

  1936. conclusion

  1937. to

  1938. his

  1939. praise

  1940. !

  1941. his

  1942. name

  1943. his

  1944. name

  1945. forever

  1946. !

  1947. !

  1948. !

  1949. !

  1950. !

  1951. !

  1952. !

  1953. !

  1954. !

  1955. !

  1956. !

  1957. Son it shall

  1958. Then shall be

  1959. Blessed

  1960. Who are blessed

  1961. All nations

  1962. Shall

  1963. Him fall

  1964. Now blessed

  1965. Be the Lord

  1966. Lord our Lord

  1967. The God of

  1968. Israel

  1969. For He alone

  1970. Th Th

  1971. Wondrous

  1972. Word

  1973. Then glory

  1974. Th

  1975. Excelled

  1976. And blessed

  1977. Be His

  1978. Glorious

  1979. Day

  1980. To all

  1981. Eternity

  1982. The whole

  1983. Earth

  1984. Let

  1985. Amen.

  1986. So let it be.

1987. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,

1988. the love of God the Father,

1989. and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

  1990. remain with us all.

  1991. Amen.

  1992. Amen.
