  1. I'm with me now to Matthew chapter 13, and today I'd like to consider together the words of verse 33, Matthew 13 and verse 33.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  2. ! He told them another parable, the kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour till it was all leavened.

  3. As you'd expect, I'm usually asked a number of questions about my retirement, the most common one being, how is retirement?

  4. How many times I've answered that question, I'm sure everybody who's retired has found the same after they retire.

  5. But another question is, what are you doing with yourself in your retirement?

  6. Well, I'm preaching most weeks, but one thing I've taken up doing since I retired is making bread.

  7. Making bread. And I enjoy making bread.

  8. Making bread is a very interesting process.

  9. Okay, I've got a bread machine.

  10. I don't have to do all that kneading, all that pulling and manipulating of dough and waiting for ages until the whole thing's ready to go in the oven.

  11. You shove it all into the machine and it does the work for you.

  12. Even the baking of it.

  13. You just take out the finished loaf.

  14. But you need to be sure that you've put all the ingredients in that the loaf requires.

  15. And that they are in exactly the right measurements according to what you're given in the guidance for making the different types of bread.

  16. If you don't keep to the guidance accurately, your bread's not going to turn out the way it should be at all.

  17. But it's an interesting process.

  18. And one of the most interesting things about it, as in making of bread at any time, is the use of yeast.

  19. Yeast nowadays, you can still get the old type of yeast, but yeast nowadays is mostly dried yeast, just powder.

  20. And that has to be added to all the other ingredients or else the bread will not rise.

  21. And yeast has fascinating properties.

  22. It's a fascinating material.

  23. It has a fascinating in its substance, in the way it works.

  24. Because as soon as it begins to work, it affects, as we'll see today from the study, the whole batch of ingredients or the dough, if you like, as it's mixed together.

  25. The yeast does its own work so that eventually it produces what turns out to be a loaf of bread.

  26. And the Bible uses yeast, or leaven as it is here.

  27. This is the word leaven that's used, the same thing, leaven, yeast.

  28. The Bible uses that illustratively.

  29. It uses yeast to illustrate, for example, the workings of sin.

  30. Because just as yeast works and spreads through the whole batch of dough, so sin is like that in our lives individually or in the life of any group of people.

  31. If it's left unrepented of, undisturbed, it'll grow in its own way.

  32. Sin is never static.

  33. It's never a neutral negative thing.

  34. It always has growth properties unless the growth is stemmed by the addition of grace or the power of God.

  35. But yeast is also used positively, as it is in this verse here.

  36. The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until it was all leavened.

  37. The positive element that yeast is, is also used here in the Bible to emphasize a positive result.

  38. The yeast was put into the batch of dough until the whole batch was leavened and ready just to be put in the oven to be baked as bread.

  39. That's the good use of this illustration, the use of the illustration in a good sense in the Bible.

  40. So what does that actually tell us today?

  41. What are we learning from this brief verse or reference to yeast?

  42. Well, two things.

  43. Look at the second one mostly.

  44. But first of all, yeast is actually a living organism.

  45. You might not think that as you take the wee sachet of powdered yeast or dried yeast and put it into the dough.

  46. But yeast retains its own properties so that when the liquid is added to it, it begins then to use, it begins then to affect the whole batch of dough.

  47. And if you take what used to be the yeast that was kept in a little jar or a little bottle, you just took a little bit of it, added it to the dough,

  48. and the bit that you left behind still kept on growing, you could use it again and again.

  49. It has in itself this property.

  50. It is itself a living organism.

  51. That's what makes it so fascinating.

  52. That yeast has within it the properties that it shows once it begins to work.

  53. And that's true of the kingdom of God.

  54. Now, the kingdom of God, we could spend ages actually trying to define what the Bible means by the kingdom of God.

  55. But the kingdom of God is essentially where God's influence or God's grace reigns and spreads throughout humanity,

  56. spreads throughout any people or even any individual.

  57. Where the grace of God is at work, the kingdom of God is in that person,

  58. the kingship of God is being shown in that person,

  59. allegiance to God as king is evident in that person,

  60. or in a congregation like yourselves, where you find that congregation growing spiritually.

  61. That's the advancement of the kingdom of God.

  62. The God as king is made evident through the way you're showing allegiance to him as a congregation.

  63. And whenever you find the influence of God through his people advancing,

  64. the kingdom of God is seen in that.

  65. The kingdom of God shows itself and grows in that.

  66. Well, here is what he's saying.

  67. The kingdom of God is like leaven,

  68. like this yeast that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour.

  69. And as it's true of the yeast that it has,

  70. as a living organism that has this property in itself,

  71. it makes it a very suitable illustration for the kingdom of God.

  72. Because the kingdom of God, it doesn't depend on us to grow.

  73. Yes, it's something in which we contribute our life,

  74. and in which we contribute as we'll see the things that we can bring to others about the gospel and about Christ.

  75. But the kingdom of God has within itself the properties of growth.

  76. Because God is at work in the growth of his kingdom.

  77. The spirit of God is at work in the growth of his kingdom.

  78. Where you have the word of God,

  79. where you have the faithful preaching of the word of God,

  80. where you have the sacraments,

  81. where you have prayer,

  82. where you have God's people worshiping together,

  83. where you have that witness and commitment to God going on in any congregation or any individual.

  84. There you have, within that commodity,

  85. the principles, if you like, of growth, of effectiveness.

  86. You add the power of God.

  87. You add the grace of God.

  88. And all of that comes together for the advance of the kingdom.

  89. The kingdom has within itself the capacity, the influence,

  90. that by the grace of God, by the work of God's Spirit,

  91. it becomes a living force.

  92. It moves in such a way as to bring people into its provisions.

  93. The kingdom of God is like leaven.

  94. It has in itself that capacity.

  95. It's a living organism.

  96. It's not neutral.

  97. It's not static.

  98. It's not negative.

  99. It's positive.

  100. And it has that capacity.

  101. But secondly, more fully,

  102. the kingdom of God, like yeast,

  103. yeast is a change-bringing organism.

  104. Not just a living organism.

  105. It's a change-bringing organism.

  106. When you add yeast to the batch of dough,

  107. it immediately begins to change things.

  108. It permeates for a start.

  109. It permeates the whole batch.

  110. You see what the verse is saying?

  111. This woman took this leaven and she hid it.

  112. She placed it in three measures of flour until it was all leavened.

  113. She didn't actually do this and then almost immediately try and bake the dough into bread.

  114. She left it until it was all leavened,

  115. until the yeast had done its work through that whole batch of dough.

  116. And Jesus is saying,

  117. that is what the kingdom of God is like.

  118. In other words,

  119. your Christian influence is designed to permeate that society,

  120. that batch of human dough, if you like,

  121. into which God has placed you as an individual,

  122. into which God has placed you as a congregation.

  123. You are here in this town,

  124. you are here in this community,

  125. as God's living organism,

  126. God's living yeast,

  127. God's living leaven,

  128. so that you see yourselves as a congregation,

  129. as actually placed for a purpose,

  130. where God has placed you here in Stornoway,

  131. so that the influence of your life will permeate the whole batch of humanity,

  132. hopefully, prayerfully,

  133. that God has placed you amongst.

  134. That's the growth that you're praying for and looking for.

  135. It's designed to permeate the whole of society around you.

  136. You don't leave any aspect of that society out.

  137. You don't leave any kind of person out of that influence

  138. of the grace of God working through you.

  139. The doctrines that you believe in,

  140. the lifestyle of a Christian,

  141. all of those things are designed to act as the leaven in the part of the dough.

  142. And your part and my part is to be that leaven in our society.

  143. You leave the change to the Holy Spirit.

  144. You can't bring about the conversion of any individual.

  145. Nobody can.

  146. But you have to be,

  147. as Jesus put it elsewhere,

  148. in the position of making disciples.

  149. Bringing the leaven of your Christian life and influence

  150. to bear upon the people around you.

  151. You're leaving the work of regeneration,

  152. the work of bringing to life spiritually,

  153. to the Holy Spirit.

  154. You can't do it anyway.

  155. But the Holy Spirit is not going to do

  156. what the Bible requires you and me to do.

  157. That's to be leaven in society.

  158. It's a bit like what Jesus says elsewhere,

  159. you are the salt of the earth.

  160. Just like salt has an influence

  161. on the whole,

  162. whatever food you're adding salt to,

  163. it doesn't just salt a tiny wee bit of it,

  164. it spreads through the whole lot.

  165. It affects the savor of the whole thing.

  166. So the leaven spreads throughout the dough.

  167. So the congregation that you are in this world,

  168. that God has given you to be,

  169. and where God has placed you,

  170. you're a congregation to act as leaven

  171. in this society around you.

  172. And just like the leaven begins to activate the moment,

  173. you actually add the water to it,

  174. so actually you are to seek the blessing of God,

  175. as you've been doing.

  176. I mean, this congregation itself

  177. has so many things going on,

  178. as I've mentioned, in prayer.

  179. And as I came to know,

  180. when I was ministered here,

  181. these eight happy years that I was with you,

  182. the number of things that are going on alongside with,

  183. alongside of the preaching of the gospel,

  184. the worship of God every Lord's Day,

  185. every midweek,

  186. alongside of that,

  187. fits all of these activities

  188. that you have going on in the congregation.

  189. That is really part of the way

  190. the leavening influence of the gospel is at work.

  191. Because in the work you have with young folks,

  192. with older young folks,

  193. with the smaller ones,

  194. the tiny ones,

  195. think of all that as leavening influence.

  196. Think of all that as an activity that's going on

  197. with a view to bringing about the leavening,

  198. the spiritual development of the whole batch of people

  199. that you are.

  200. And everybody has their own bit to contribute to that.

  201. You know, that's how it is for our situation in life as well.

  202. We're placed by the Lord in order to seek to bring

  203. an influence by his blessing to the community around us.

  204. You know, our tendency,

  205. the tendency certainly of the world around you

  206. is to think that people's problems are entirely external.

  207. And that if you improve people's conditions externally,

  208. then you'll find a difference in their way of life,

  209. in their outlook on life,

  210. in their behavior in life.

  211. Well, people's behavior may to some small extent

  212. be affected by their environment

  213. and by the situations that they have from day to day outwardly.

  214. But people's behavior begins from in here.

  215. It begins from within the soul.

  216. And unless that is turned around and changed,

  217. that person's not going to be much different

  218. to what they always have been.

  219. But here is where the leavening influence

  220. of the gospel, of the Christian gospel,

  221. of the Christian life,

  222. as it's set in society,

  223. it's aiming at, by God's blessing,

  224. affecting people so that they'll begin

  225. to think deeply about life,

  226. that they'll turn to the Lord,

  227. they'll become new creations in Christ.

  228. And you're a leavening influence

  229. towards that objective.

  230. And if I may say so,

  231. one of the rewarding things

  232. that I've done more recently

  233. is to speak at the Road to Recovery

  234. that David leads here in the town.

  235. And one of the encouraging

  236. and really thrilling things about it

  237. is that that work is based on the gospel.

  238. That work is based not on changing

  239. people's outward circumstances,

  240. though, of course, that's not neglected.

  241. But the work is that people

  242. will come to know the Lord,

  243. that people will come to have their lives

  244. changed by the grace of God.

  245. And the leavening influence

  246. of a Christian influence

  247. is designed to bring people

  248. to that point,

  249. by God's blessing,

  250. that the leaven of the lives

  251. of those who are seeking

  252. to help those with needs

  253. such as addictions,

  254. will come to see them converted,

  255. come to see them

  256. coming into the kingdom themselves

  257. and becoming part of it.

  258. The kingdom is like leaven,

  259. which a woman took

  260. and hid in these measures of flow

  261. until it was all leavened.

  262. And you know that should be

  263. our objective as well.

  264. Even if we're convinced

  265. that the world is not going to be

  266. completely changed

  267. before the Lord comes,

  268. we should still have it as our objective

  269. to see as much change

  270. as possible taking place.

  271. And that means through your influence

  272. as a congregation,

  273. through your influence as individuals,

  274. that you seek God's blessing

  275. to bring the change about.

  276. So that permeates,

  277. the leaven as it permeates,

  278. the whole measure

  279. of the batch of dough,

  280. so the kingdom is designed

  281. to infiltrate,

  282. to permeate,

  283. to go through society

  284. and communities.

  285. But secondly,

  286. it's a change-bringing organism

  287. because as you see yeast at work,

  288. one of the things you see

  289. is that the yeast transfers

  290. its own properties,

  291. if you like,

  292. to the whole batch of dough

  293. into which you place it.

  294. Because the batch of dough

  295. is there static.

  296. It doesn't move.

  297. It doesn't change.

  298. As soon as you add the yeast to it,

  299. it begins to change.

  300. And the change is brought about,

  301. not just brought about by the yeast,

  302. but the yeast is seeking

  303. to transform that batch of dough

  304. into like itself,

  305. to grow,

  306. to increase,

  307. to change in its substance indeed,

  308. to some extent.

  309. And that's the same with the gospel.

  310. When you introduce the gospel

  311. into human society,

  312. into human communities,

  313. into human individual experiences,

  314. that gospel enters into that life

  315. or these lives

  316. as yeast is entered

  317. into the batch of dough.

  318. It immediately begins,

  319. if God blesses it as we pray,

  320. to influence the whole batch.

  321. And it begins to transform

  322. that whole batch

  323. into what it's like itself

  324. because the yeast of God's gospel

  325. or the life that God gives

  326. to his people

  327. is something that has

  328. divine properties.

  329. You could be mistaken about that

  330. and I don't want to mislead you,

  331. but of course,

  332. it doesn't mean we are made

  333. into something other than human beings

  334. when we come to know the Lord,

  335. when we have a spirit working within us,

  336. when we're changed from being dead sinners

  337. into living disciples, saints.

  338. But it does mean

  339. this gospel,

  340. this grace of God

  341. that works through the gospel,

  342. this grace of God

  343. that is at work

  344. in the life of God's people,

  345. it has its own divine properties.

  346. It's not been manufactured

  347. by human beings.

  348. It's not something

  349. the church has brought about

  350. in the course of history.

  351. It's not something

  352. that any individual,

  353. however talented,

  354. is actually able to produce

  355. or reproduce.

  356. It is God at work.

  357. And God's work

  358. is always like himself.

  359. It always bears a similarity

  360. to him.

  361. And as the yeast

  362. is entered into

  363. the batch of dough,

  364. so it begins to change

  365. that batch of dough

  366. to be like itself.

  367. It transforms that batch

  368. from within

  369. and it spreads out

  370. throughout it,

  371. as we've said,

  372. until the whole batch

  373. is affected.

  374. You don't find

  375. any other philosophy

  376. that has that capacity.

  377. It doesn't matter

  378. what religion

  379. you look at in the world

  380. with Christianity.

  381. Whatever influences

  382. it has,

  383. it may very well

  384. have a lot of influence

  385. as you can see

  386. in our own society.

  387. There are many religions

  388. and ideologies

  389. that have influences

  390. that bring people

  391. to follow them.

  392. But it doesn't have

  393. the divine capacity

  394. to change human life

  395. from within.

  396. It doesn't have

  397. within it

  398. that capacity,

  399. that divine power

  400. which the Spirit

  401. of God

  402. uses and shows

  403. in people

  404. being born again.

  405. That's why

  406. it's so important

  407. that you and I

  408. and this congregation

  409. act as leaven

  410. in this community.

  411. Because you're

  412. carrying with you

  413. in the gospel,

  414. in your own Christian life,

  415. when you're committed

  416. to the Lord,

  417. you're carrying with you

  418. a power

  419. that cannot be

  420. reproduced

  421. or replicated

  422. by any other power

  423. on earth.

  424. And you have to believe

  425. that that power

  426. is the power

  427. that's able to change

  428. people's lives

  429. radically.

  430. What's going to change

  431. this society

  432. we belong to today

  433. with all its dreadful

  434. excesses,

  435. with its rampant

  436. secularist way

  437. of looking at things,

  438. with all its atheism,

  439. with all the hate

  440. that there is there

  441. for the gospel,

  442. for the things of God,

  443. for the people of God,

  444. for the church?

  445. What is it that's

  446. going to change

  447. church buildings

  448. that for centuries

  449. were associated

  450. with the gospel

  451. and being now changed

  452. into mosques

  453. or whatever else

  454. use they're changed into?

  455. What's going to reverse that?

  456. What's going to change that?

  457. And friends,

  458. we need to see

  459. these changes.

  460. Otherwise,

  461. that's just going to go on

  462. month by month,

  463. year by year,

  464. and we'll be left

  465. with a spiritual wilderness.

  466. What's going to change it

  467. is the gospel,

  468. the power of God

  469. unto salvation.

  470. How do we actually

  471. set about

  472. living to that end?

  473. Well,

  474. being,

  475. yeast being,

  476. leaven in the world.

  477. having an influence

  478. with people

  479. alongside you,

  480. neighbors,

  481. work colleagues,

  482. school friends,

  483. but you and I

  484. have to be the yeast

  485. that looks to change

  486. society by the blessing

  487. of God.

  488. To see the kingdom

  489. of God advance.

  490. That's what we were

  491. praying for with the

  492. children,

  493. wasn't it?

  494. Where,

  495. in the Lord's Prayer,

  496. that's one of the elements

  497. in the Lord's Prayer.

  498. Thy kingdom come.

  499. Thy will be done

  500. on earth

  501. as it is in heaven.

  502. Let your kingdom come.

  503. We can't be praying,

  504. let your kingdom come,

  505. and then standing aside

  506. as if that's going to happen

  507. without us being concerned

  508. to live as yeast

  509. or leaven

  510. in this world

  511. for Christ.

  512. God's not dependent

  513. on us.

  514. Yes,

  515. God can work

  516. without us.

  517. God can do many things

  518. without us.

  519. But that's not how

  520. he's revealed

  521. in the Bible

  522. as operating.

  523. He operates

  524. through the life

  525. of his church.

  526. He operates

  527. through God's people

  528. living as yeast

  529. in the society

  530. where they're placed.

  531. Transferring

  532. the properties

  533. of spiritual life

  534. by God's blessing

  535. to those that presently

  536. don't have it.

  537. it's a change

  538. bringing organism.

  539. It transfers

  540. its properties

  541. to the whole batch.

  542. Thirdly,

  543. finally,

  544. it actually grows.

  545. Are we

  546. too used

  547. to seeing

  548. the church

  549. decrease?

  550. Are we in danger

  551. of saying,

  552. well,

  553. that's just how

  554. God has planned it.

  555. That's just how

  556. God is.

  557. That's what providence

  558. has brought about.

  559. Yes.

  560. Are we satisfied

  561. with that?

  562. Are we saying,

  563. that's how it must be?

  564. Are we seeing

  565. ourselves as just

  566. no longer acting

  567. as yeast

  568. in society?

  569. Have we lost

  570. our vision

  571. that the church

  572. is meant

  573. to grow

  574. and not

  575. to be reduced?

  576. I know

  577. everything's

  578. under the authority

  579. and the providence

  580. of God

  581. under the complete

  582. and utter authority

  583. of God

  584. that he rules

  585. sovereignly

  586. over every event,

  587. over every eventuality,

  588. over every turn

  589. in the church's life

  590. and experience.

  591. That's how it's

  592. always been.

  593. But let's not

  594. lose

  595. our vision

  596. of growth.

  597. Let's not

  598. lose our vision

  599. that the kingdom

  600. of God,

  601. the rule

  602. of God

  603. through his people

  604. is meant

  605. to lead

  606. to growth.

  607. A growth

  608. in his cause.

  609. A growth

  610. in people

  611. confessing him

  612. as their Lord.

  613. It's like leaven

  614. which this woman

  615. took and hid

  616. in three measures

  617. of flour

  618. till all

  619. was leavened.

  620. In other words,

  621. the kingdom

  622. of God

  623. has that

  624. spiritual

  625. substance

  626. to it

  627. that is itself

  628. designed

  629. to grow.

  630. And you can

  631. see that

  632. in the early

  633. church,

  634. for example,

  635. in the days

  636. of the Acts

  637. of the Apostles.

  638. Look at the number

  639. of people,

  640. it's not about

  641. numbers,

  642. but just look

  643. at the size

  644. of that batch

  645. of disciples

  646. that left

  647. the upper room

  648. and went out

  649. to follow Christ

  650. and to bring

  651. the gospel

  652. into the world.

  653. And by the time

  654. you read

  655. through the book

  656. of Acts

  657. and you see

  658. what's happened

  659. in Athens,

  660. in Thessalonica,

  661. in Ephesus,

  662. all the other

  663. places that are

  664. mentioned there,

  665. you'll find

  666. churches established,

  667. you'll find

  668. churches growing,

  669. you'll find

  670. the kingdom

  671. of God

  672. advancing.

  673. Why is that?

  674. Because the people

  675. of God,

  676. the disciples

  677. of Jesus,

  678. took this

  679. into the world,

  680. they acted

  681. as leaven

  682. in the society

  683. of their day.

  684. And God

  685. blessed that

  686. and God

  687. followed that

  688. and God

  689. took that

  690. and placed it

  691. into the batch

  692. of dough

  693. that that sinful

  694. pagan world

  695. was.

  696. and as you

  697. read the book

  698. of Acts

  699. you can watch

  700. it grow.

  701. You can see

  702. its influence.

  703. You can see

  704. how seriously

  705. people took

  706. their Christian

  707. walk,

  708. their Christian

  709. confession,

  710. their Christian

  711. commitment

  712. to the Lord

  713. and to His

  714. cause.

  715. You can see

  716. it,

  717. secondly,

  718. you can see

  719. it on revivals,

  720. can't you?

  721. If you read

  722. these excellent

  723. books on revival

  724. that you find

  725. written recently

  726. by Tom Lenny,

  727. he's got three

  728. or four books

  729. actually on revival

  730. in different parts

  731. of Scotland,

  732. including Lewis

  733. itself,

  734. which he focuses

  735. on quite a bit.

  736. But as you'll see

  737. the accounts he gives

  738. in all of these

  739. areas,

  740. for example,

  741. just of Lewis

  742. itself,

  743. where he has

  744. checked it out

  745. with people

  746. and followed

  747. through his research,

  748. and you'll find

  749. some really

  750. astounding,

  751. some wonderful,

  752. some exhilarating

  753. accounts of

  754. individuals

  755. used by God,

  756. placed in the

  757. darkness of

  758. their own day,

  759. and all of a

  760. sudden,

  761. spiritual life.

  762. Leaven has

  763. done its work.

  764. People come

  765. to think

  766. seriously

  767. about life.

  768. What is life

  769. about?

  770. They come

  771. to attend

  772. church services,

  773. and they come

  774. to not only

  775. attend,

  776. but also come

  777. with concern,

  778. with weeping

  779. to church services,

  780. seeking the

  781. Lord,

  782. concerned

  783. for the

  784. name of

  785. Christ,

  786. more concerned

  787. for the

  788. glory of

  789. God than

  790. for themselves.

  791. That's the

  792. leaven at work.

  793. And that's

  794. God blessing

  795. his word,

  796. God placing

  797. these people

  798. as the movement

  799. grew in the

  800. society of their

  801. day,

  802. so that others

  803. are added to

  804. the number.

  805. You see,

  806. that should be

  807. our vision as

  808. well,

  809. shouldn't it,

  810. that we don't

  811. rest until the

  812. whole batch

  813. is leavened,

  814. until throughout

  815. the course of

  816. our lives,

  817. at least in

  818. this world,

  819. we've given

  820. what we can

  821. and been

  822. what we

  823. should be

  824. as God's

  825. leaven in

  826. the world.

  827. And of

  828. course,

  829. that's the

  830. case with

  831. individuals as

  832. well.

  833. Once the

  834. work starts

  835. in an

  836. individual's

  837. life,

  838. the work

  839. of God's

  840. Spirit,

  841. where God,

  842. as it were,

  843. places the

  844. leaven of

  845. his life,

  846. the leaven of

  847. his Spirit,

  848. into any

  849. human soul,

  850. it grows.

  851. It grows.

  852. It spreads

  853. throughout the

  854. whole of that

  855. person's life

  856. and being.

  857. It's not just

  858. something that

  859. affects your

  860. thoughts without

  861. affecting your

  862. conscience,

  863. without affecting

  864. your will,

  865. without affecting

  866. your love,

  867. your emotions.

  868. The whole of

  869. your human

  870. character is

  871. affected by

  872. the leaven of

  873. God's life

  874. entering into

  875. you.

  876. And today,

  877. friends,

  878. we're privileged

  879. to have the

  880. Gospel setting

  881. out these terms

  882. for us,

  883. to remind us

  884. that the

  885. kingdom of

  886. heaven is

  887. like leaven,

  888. that we

  889. belong to

  890. the movement

  891. of the

  892. kingdom of

  893. heaven,

  894. that we

  895. belong to

  896. that movement

  897. that itself

  898. is designed

  899. to infiltrate

  900. the world

  901. for Christ,

  902. to grow in

  903. that world,

  904. to bring

  905. about the

  906. knowledge of

  907. Christ in

  908. that world.

  909. You put a

  910. batch of

  911. yeast into

  912. a lump of

  913. dough,

  914. you try and

  915. stop it

  916. working.

  917. It's not

  918. easy.

  919. Maybe not

  920. impossible,

  921. but it's not

  922. easy.

  923. Because that

  924. yeast, as it

  925. grows, as it

  926. transfers its

  927. properties, the

  928. whole batch

  929. grows.

  930. You try and

  931. stop the

  932. spirit of

  933. God.

  934. Once it

  935. works, even

  936. through an

  937. individual, in

  938. any part of

  939. human society,

  940. you try and

  941. stop it.

  942. You can't do

  943. it.

  944. Because it's

  945. God at

  946. work, for

  947. which you and

  948. I should be

  949. burdened.

  950. She didn't

  951. wait until all

  952. things were

  953. leavened.

  954. Then she

  955. could take the

  956. batch of

  957. dough and

  958. use it for

  959. bread.

  960. God's

  961. purpose is

  962. for yourself

  963. and for

  964. myself today.

  965. Remember how

  966. Paul wrote to

  967. the Philippian

  968. church, a

  969. church that

  970. he loved,

  971. a church that

  972. loved him

  973. greatly.

  974. It wasn't a

  975. perfect church,

  976. no church is.

  977. But when he

  978. wrote to them

  979. in the very

  980. first chapter of

  981. that short

  982. epistle, he

  983. said how much

  984. he was thanking

  985. God for them,

  986. for every

  987. remembrance of

  988. them.

  989. He was

  990. writing to

  991. them from

  992. prison.

  993. But as he

  994. remembered them,

  995. as he reflected

  996. upon them,

  997. he thanked

  998. God for them,

  999. for their

  1000. partnership in

  1001. the gospel from

  1002. the first day

  1003. till now.

  1004. What's he

  1005. saying?

  1006. He's saying I'm

  1007. thankful that

  1008. you became part

  1009. of the leaven,

  1010. that as God

  1011. made me leaven

  1012. in your society,

  1013. you joined

  1014. that, you

  1015. became leaven,

  1016. you influenced

  1017. others, you

  1018. were used

  1019. by God.

  1020. As he went

  1021. on to say

  1022. that it was

  1023. right for him

  1024. to think

  1025. this about

  1026. them.

  1027. For he

  1028. says where

  1029. he has

  1030. begun a

  1031. good work,

  1032. he will

  1033. fulfill it,

  1034. complete it,

  1035. bring it to

  1036. completion at

  1037. the day of

  1038. Christ.

  1039. Friends,

  1040. let's not

  1041. rest.

  1042. Let's not

  1043. lose our

  1044. sight of

  1045. God at

  1046. work.

  1047. Let's not

  1048. lose our

  1049. vision for

  1050. the gospel.

  1051. Let's

  1052. retain that

  1053. picture of

  1054. God's

  1055. kingdom as

  1056. leaven.

  1057. Let's play

  1058. individually our

  1059. own part in

  1060. being leaven

  1061. in the

  1062. society we're

  1063. placed into.

  1064. Let's pray.

  1065. Lord, our

  1066. gracious God,

  1067. we acknowledge

  1068. that we are

  1069. so often not

  1070. what we

  1071. should be,

  1072. that we

  1073. are falling

  1074. short in

  1075. every aspect

  1076. of our

  1077. life.

  1078. Yet, Lord,

  1079. as we complain

  1080. about these

  1081. things, we

  1082. pray that you

  1083. enable us to

  1084. have our

  1085. vision restored

  1086. or maintained

  1087. as to your

  1088. kingdom and its

  1089. work and its

  1090. properties.

  1091. peace.

  1092. And help us,

  1093. we pray, to

  1094. have a proper

  1095. estimate of

  1096. our own place

  1097. within that

  1098. kingdom.

  1099. Grant that you

  1100. would continue

  1101. daily to throw

  1102. our hearts to

  1103. yourself.

  1104. Remember any

  1105. here today,

  1106. Lord, who have

  1107. not yet committed

  1108. their life to

  1109. you.

  1110. We pray that you

  1111. would enter into

  1112. their life

  1113. powerfully, that

  1114. the leaven of

  1115. your gospel might

  1116. indeed carry out

  1117. its own work by

  1118. your spirit.

  1119. We pray that for

  1120. every gathering of

  1121. your church

  1122. throughout the

  1123. world today.

  1124. We pray for

  1125. your people as

  1126. they continue to

  1127. witness to you.

  1128. Lord, make them,

  1129. we pray, more

  1130. and more powerful

  1131. and effective in

  1132. the witness that

  1133. they bear.

  1134. And use us, we

  1135. pray, as your

  1136. people in the

  1137. world, even

  1138. beyond what we

  1139. are able to ask

  1140. or think, that

  1141. whatever small

  1142. ideas we may

  1143. have of ourselves,

  1144. we may know

  1145. that in the

  1146. hands of Christ

  1147. great things can

  1148. be achieved.

  1149. Hear us now,

  1150. we pray for

  1151. his sake.

  1152. Amen.

  1153. Now we

  1154. conclude our

  1155. worship this

  1156. morning singing

  1157. in Psalm 65.

  1158. Psalm 65 in

  1159. the Singed

  1160. Psalms version.

  1161. To the

  1162. Tune Huddersfield

  1163. we're singing

  1164. verses 8 to

  1165. 13.

  1166. That's on

  1167. page 82.

  1168. Those who

  1169. inhabit distant

  1170. lands with

  1171. awe regard

  1172. your ways.

  1173. Where morning

  1174. dawns and

  1175. evening fades,

  1176. you call forth

  1177. songs of

  1178. praise.

  1179. You tend the

  1180. land and water

  1181. it, you make

  1182. it rich and

  1183. good.

  1184. As you

  1185. ordained, your

  1186. streams are full

  1187. to give the

  1188. people food.

  1189. You drench the

  1190. furrows of the

  1191. land, you level

  1192. off the ground, you

  1193. soften it with

  1194. showers of rain and

  1195. make its crops

  1196. abound.

  1197. And although these

  1198. verses speak

  1199. literally of

  1200. agricultural ways

  1201. and the natural

  1202. growth of things in

  1203. the land, they're

  1204. obviously transferable

  1205. spiritually as well

  1206. to the way in

  1207. which God brings

  1208. about by his

  1209. blessing that rich

  1210. spiritual growth that

  1211. we pray for.

  1212. So verses 8 to

  1213. 13, those who

  1214. inhabit distant

  1215. lands with awe

  1216. regard your

  1217. ways.

  1218. Amen.

1220. rich and good, as you ordained, your streams are full to give the people good.

1221. You drenched the furrows of the land, you level off the ground,

1222. you soften it with showers of rain and make this cross a band.

1223. You cried the year with beautifulness, your harvest overflows,

1224. the grass that flourishes again, the hills with calmness so.

1225. The pastures gleam with cloths and gold, the meadows covered in,
