  1. Well, we can turn back to our reading in Mark's Gospel, chapter 10, and we'll look at these verses that we've read together from verse 32 down to verse 45.

  2. ! A few weeks ago, just before the October holidays on the Lord's Day morning, we were looking at the previous section to this from verse 13 down to verse 31.

  3. And we saw there how in verse 13 there was the children that were being brought to Jesus, and the disciples were rebuking them and telling them not to bother the Master with them.

  4. But Jesus says, let the children come to me, for to them belongs the kingdom of God.

  5. And then we went on from there into verse 17 down to verse 31, where we see Jesus meeting with the rich young ruler, as he's known, the one who had great wealth, but yet lacked one thing.

  6. One thing missing in his life.

  7. He wasn't willing to give it all up and to come and follow Jesus.

  8. And the people who heard this and saw this, the disciples and those who were with Jesus, they were astonished.

  9. In verse 26, it says, they were exceedingly astonished and said to him, then who can be saved?

  10. If this young man, who's seemingly kept all of the law in his own eyes, a good man in many ways, how, if he can't be saved, how can anyone be saved?

  11. Well, Jesus reminded them that with man it's impossible, but with God, all things are possible, it says in verse 27.

  12. And so that's where we're continuing from as we come into verse 32.

  13. And who is Jesus speaking to in this passage?

  14. As you read from verse 32 down to verse 45, when you see everything that's taking place,

  15. when you see the kind of words that are used, you think of that word, verse 26, that people were exceedingly astonished.

  16. There was this astonishment in their midst.

  17. There was amazement.

  18. There was fear.

  19. There was demands being made.

  20. There was dismay.

  21. There was all kinds of thoughts going on among the people.

  22. So you might think that Jesus here is speaking to people who are opposed to him or know nothing about him.

  23. And he's teaching them his ways.

  24. But who is he actually speaking to?

  25. Well, he's speaking to the disciples and to his closest followers.

  26. And we see in their experience so much of what our experience can be like as well.

  27. We have all these times that we go through different experiences in life, different emotions,

  28. that sense of astonishment, amazement, fear.

  29. All can be our experience too in life when it comes to following Jesus.

  30. And so what we see here as we look at this passage is all of these mixed up feelings,

  31. mixed up questions that they have, mixed up reactions to the situation that they find themselves.

  32. And it shows us the reality of the world in which we live, that we have so many challenges that we have to face up to.

  33. Here are those who are closest to Jesus.

  34. This is coming towards the end of his ministry.

  35. He's been three years with them.

  36. And still you could say they don't fully understand who they have before them.

  37. And it's a great reminder to us as Christians or as those who are maybe seeking to know more about the Christian faith,

  38. to know more about the Lord, that in our own understanding, our own emotions,

  39. we can, as they would say, we can go through the ringer.

  40. We can go through all of these different challenges.

  41. And we feel one moment that we're close to the Lord, just like the disciples were,

  42. and the followers on many occasions.

  43. And at other times we can feel like we're so far away from the Lord

  44. and almost going in the opposite direction to him.

  45. But our faith is not dependent on our feelings.

  46. Our faith is not dependent on what's going on around us.

  47. And when we look at this situation and the way the people respond and the way the people act,

  48. it's almost an encouragement to us.

  49. It's an encouragement to us that, well, we're not alone.

  50. When we feel like we're going through these experiences of astonishment, amazement, doubt, and fear,

  51. and all of these things, we're not alone.

  52. We're not the first.

  53. We won't be the last.

  54. And there are many others going through these experiences as well.

  55. Even those who were the closest to Jesus, his own disciples,

  56. found themselves almost again and again asking that question that they asked in Mark chapter 4

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  57. with the storm that they were with Jesus in.

  58. Who is this?

  59. They were astonished again and again.

  60. They react in different ways again and again throughout the Gospels as we see.

  61. But where does it always come back to?

  62. It needs to come back to the reality of the truth that Jesus speaks,

  63. the word that Jesus speaks to them and to us as well.

  64. They're brought back to see the teaching of Jesus.

  65. And that's what Jesus is giving to them in the verses that we are looking at this evening.

  66. And there is a wealth of teaching again.

  67. Chapter 10 just seems to be full of teaching after teaching after teaching of who Jesus is

  68. and how they need to trust him.

  69. And you see it's in the situation, the setting again of Jesus foretelling his death,

  70. reminding them this is the purpose that he has come,

  71. that he has a mission to fulfill,

  72. and that his mission is for the salvation of souls.

  73. And so he's telling them for the third time that he is going to die for them,

  74. and yet they don't understand.

  75. And don't we too have so much to learn?

  76. You don't know everything.

  77. I don't know everything.

  78. We don't have all the answers.

  79. Being a minister doesn't mean all the answers are contained in my mind.

  80. It's impossible.

  81. Being a church member doesn't mean you've made it.

  82. You've arrived and that's it.

  83. Coming to church doesn't make you better than others around us.

  84. And so it's important for us that we see that we are all a work in progress.

  85. That's what this passage reminds us about.

  86. We are all a work in progress.

  87. And in the midst of all the mixed up emotions that we can have in life,

  88. that we can depend on the word of God.

  89. And so the first thing we see with the people here is their mixed up feelings.

  90. Jesus here is continuing, as it says in verse 32,

  91. they were on the road going up to Jerusalem.

  92. So he's been on this journey.

  93. You see it in verse 17 as well.

  94. Just before he met the rich young man,

  95. he says he was setting out on his journey.

  96. What was his journey?

  97. Well, it was his journey that he was on going up to Jerusalem.

  98. And he outlines for them in verse 32 to verse 34

  99. the purpose for which he was going up to Jerusalem.

  100. And perhaps this is what leaves the disciples and the followers

  101. with so many mixed up feelings of amazement and fear

  102. all mixed up together.

  103. Because when you look at what this journey entails,

  104. he says to them in verse 33,

  105. See, we are going up to Jerusalem.

  106. And he outlines the purpose.

  107. The Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes

  108. and they will condemn him to death

  109. and deliver him over to the Gentiles.

  110. And so it goes on.

  111. This is the purpose for which Jesus has come.

  112. And since Jesus began his earthly ministry,

  113. he has been teaching the disciples who he called to follow

  114. and all who are in his hearing,

  115. he was teaching them of the purpose of his coming.

  116. He was revealing it to them again and again.

  117. He has called them to follow him.

  118. And he has been telling them who he is.

  119. And they believed so much about Jesus.

  120. They believed he was a great teacher.

  121. They believed he was a great prophet.

  122. But yet they were still missing out on so much.

  123. Again, you go back to that event in chapter 4

  124. when he was with them in the boat

  125. and they were astonished and they said,

  126. Who is this?

  127. When they had seen Jesus by his word,

  128. calm the wind and the waves to be a peaceful, calm sea.

  129. They were amazed.

  130. Who is this?

  131. And it's almost like they still have this question

  132. in the back of their mind,

  133. even at this point as they're just about arriving in Jerusalem.

  134. Who is this?

  135. They believed that the rabbi,

  136. their teacher as he was, Jesus,

  137. that he was going to deliver his people

  138. from the domination of Rome.

  139. They believed that Jesus was going to restore God's people.

  140. They believed that he would be the king of Israel.

  141. And all of these things they were right with.

  142. But where they were going wrong

  143. was just how this was going to happen

  144. and when this was going to happen.

  145. They expected it to be done in a way

  146. that they could understand.

  147. And because it wasn't going the way they expected,

  148. their feelings were all over the place.

  149. And so as Jesus tells them

  150. for the third time here

  151. that they are going up to Jerusalem

  152. for this very purpose,

  153. they're still not understanding.

  154. The disciples believed that everything

  155. was going to be right in their own lifetime.

  156. They believed that Jesus was on the verge

  157. of his kingdom coming in power

  158. and that he was going to rule.

  159. But they didn't see that what God was doing

  160. was beyond anything that they could imagine.

  161. that it went beyond their situation,

  162. that it went beyond their setting

  163. and their time.

  164. It went down to generation after generation

  165. that God was building his kingdom

  166. and his kingdom was going to come

  167. in an even greater way

  168. than they could ever imagine.

  169. That God was restoring his people

  170. through Jesus giving himself,

  171. as we see in this passage,

  172. as a ransom for many.

  173. When Jesus predicted his death

  174. three times in the Gospel of Mark,

  175. you find that each time

  176. that he tells his people

  177. what is to take place,

  178. there is a sense of confusion.

  179. There is a sense of misunderstanding.

  180. If he has really come to put the world in order,

  181. how is his death going to accomplish this?

  182. It just seemed absurd.

  183. But Jesus has his purpose.

  184. He is going to Jerusalem

  185. and they are afraid and astonished.

  186. But Jesus is here reminding them

  187. of the question that he had

  188. in chapter 8, verse 29,

  189. where he says,

  190. Who do you say that I am?

  191. It keeps coming back to this.

  192. It's not about your feelings.

  193. It's not about what you think should happen

  194. or how it should happen,

  195. but who do you say that I am?

  196. And that's the same for ourselves today as well.

  197. When life isn't going maybe the way that we expected

  198. or the church isn't going the way that we would want it,

  199. all of these things,

  200. we come back to see,

  201. well, what is the foundation of our church?

  202. What is the foundation of our faith?

  203. It is the one who asks of us,

  204. Who do you say that I am?

  205. Do we see that it is the Christ

  206. and that his word is our security?

  207. Not our feelings,

  208. but our faith in him.

  209. Martin Luther once famously said,

  210. Feelings come and feelings go

  211. and feelings are deceiving.

  212. My warrant is the word of God.

  213. Not else is worth believing.

  214. I'll trust in God's unchanging word

  215. till soul and body sever.

  216. For though all things shall pass away,

  217. his word shall stand forever.

  218. Feelings come and feelings go

  219. and feelings are deceiving.

  220. But we can say the same.

  221. My warrant is the word of God.

  222. Not else is worth believing.

  223. And that's what Jesus is teaching them here.

  224. In their mixed up feelings,

  225. it is to see that the word that he is speaking,

  226. it will stand forever.

  227. And that is our hope today as well.

  228. Faith is not on feelings.

  229. Faith is on the word of God

  230. and the promises given through Jesus in that word.

  231. And the question comes to us,

  232. do we believe?

  233. Who do we say that this man is?

  234. Is he the Christ who has come into the world?

  235. Well, we have these mixed up feelings,

  236. but we also see, secondly here,

  237. mixed up questions.

  238. You can almost ask yourself,

  239. have the disciples learned anything

  240. in all their experience with Jesus,

  241. given that this is the third time

  242. that he's told them that his death

  243. is going to come

  244. as they make their way up to Jerusalem?

  245. Have they learned anything

  246. from their experience with him?

  247. And when you look at chapter 8, 9, and 10,

  248. in each of these chapters,

  249. Jesus tells them his purpose

  250. in coming into the world

  251. is that he is going to give his life.

  252. In chapter 8, verse 31,

  253. he began to teach them

  254. that the Son of Man must suffer many things

  255. and be rejected by the elders

  256. and the chief priests and the scribes

  257. and be killed, and after three days,

  258. rise again.

  259. In chapter 9, verse 31,

  260. for he was teaching his disciples,

  261. saying to them,

  262. the Son of Man is going to be delivered

  263. into the hands of men,

  264. and they will kill him,

  265. and when he is killed,

  266. after three days, he will rise.

  267. And then we have it again

  268. in chapter 10 here,

  269. in verse 33, as we've read,

  270. to verse 34.

  271. See, we are going up to Jerusalem,

  272. and so on.

  273. Three times he has told them.

  274. And you would think by now

  275. they're going to understand,

  276. they're going to get it,

  277. that this is why Jesus has come.

  278. Surely, at least by this third time.

  279. The first time you see Jesus telling them,

  280. well, he has to tell Peter

  281. to get behind me, Satan.

  282. If we do not know what you are talking about,

  283. the things of God,

  284. your mind is not on the things of God,

  285. but on the things of man,

  286. in verse 33 of chapter 8.

  287. So there was a misunderstanding.

  288. They didn't get it.

  289. The same is true in chapter 9,

  290. after he's told them.

  291. What do they start speaking about?

  292. They start speaking about,

  293. in verse 33,

  294. who is the greatest?

  295. Who is the greatest?

  296. Their minds go to something

  297. completely different.

  298. So surely this time

  299. they're going to get it.

  300. But no.

  301. What do they have?

  302. After they've been told this,

  303. you'd think they'd have questions.

  304. But even their questions are mixed up.

  305. They almost don't know what to ask.

  306. So as in verse 35 it says,

  307. James and John,

  308. the sons of Sebedee,

  309. came to him and said to him,

  310. Teacher,

  311. you would maybe expect,

  312. help us understand.

  313. Teach us what this actually means.

  314. Teach us what it will mean for us.

  315. But what do they say in verse 35?

  316. Teacher,

  317. we want you to do for us

  318. whatever we ask of you.

  319. And you might think,

  320. well okay,

  321. what do they want?

  322. And that's exactly what Jesus says to them.

  323. What do you want me to do for you?

  324. And look at the reply.

  325. Grant us to sit one at your right hand

  326. and one at your left

  327. in your glory.

  328. Grant us to sit one at your right,

  329. one at your left

  330. in your glory.

  331. There's almost no thought

  332. of what Jesus is going to do for them.

  333. How glory is going to come to them.

  334. They think it's going to be easy.

  335. They want all this glory.

  336. They want the crown.

  337. But they don't want the cross.

  338. They don't want that suffering.

  339. They don't want any of that.

  340. And there's the problem.

  341. And perhaps in the back of their mind

  342. is the account of the rich young ruler

  343. and the cost of following Jesus.

  344. That's at the end of that section

  345. in verse 29 of this chapter

  346. to verse 31.

  347. You know, there's the cost.

  348. Truly I say to you,

  349. there is no one who has left house

  350. or brothers or sisters or mother,

  351. so on.

  352. There's a cost.

  353. And it's almost like

  354. as we come into verse 35,

  355. that's maybe in the back of their minds.

  356. They're wanting something out of this.

  357. They're wanting glory.

  358. But they don't grasp

  359. what the cost is

  360. that Jesus is going to pay.

  361. If only they truly knew

  362. who was before them.

  363. If only they could truly understand

  364. what he was about to do.

  365. What his death actually meant.

  366. The price that was being paid.

  367. Why did he have to tell them so often

  368. what had to happen?

  369. Why did he leave a remembrance

  370. before the crucifixion,

  371. that he gave this remembrance,

  372. the Lord's Supper,

  373. to do this in remembrance of me?

  374. Because we forget.

  375. Because we are a forgetful people

  376. where we want all the glory,

  377. glory,

  378. but none of the dirty work.

  379. Jesus came

  380. to give his life.

  381. But the problem with the disciples

  382. is just like us,

  383. pride so often takes over.

  384. We want glory.

  385. When you think about

  386. what they're asking for here,

  387. grant us to sit

  388. one at your right hand

  389. and one at your left

  390. in your glory.

  391. You wonder what they thought

  392. as Jesus was crucified

  393. with a thief,

  394. one on the right

  395. and one on the left.

  396. And one of these thieves

  397. actually crying out,

  398. remember me

  399. when you're in paradise.

  400. The humility that was seen

  401. there on the cross

  402. of Jesus giving himself.

  403. They would understand

  404. eventually.

  405. And that's what Jesus

  406. makes clear here.

  407. You don't understand

  408. at this point,

  409. are you able to drink

  410. the cup that I drink

  411. or be baptized

  412. with a baptism

  413. which I am baptized?

  414. He's saying at this point,

  415. you don't understand.

  416. But then he says

  417. in the end of verse 39,

  418. the cup that I drink,

  419. you will drink.

  420. And the baptism

  421. with which I am baptized,

  422. you will be baptized.

  423. So they will receive this.

  424. And as you see

  425. with the disciples

  426. as they go on,

  427. after the crucifixion,

  428. many of them suffered

  429. greatly.

  430. But at this point,

  431. they just don't understand.

  432. And that's the danger

  433. for us

  434. to allow pride

  435. to come in.

  436. The Bible teaches us

  437. again and again

  438. about pride.

  439. Proverbs 16,

    Proverbs 16:18

  440. verse 18,

  441. pride goes before destruction

  442. and a haughty spirit

  443. before a fall.

  444. 1 Corinthians 10,

    1 Corinthians 10:12

  445. verse 12,

  446. therefore let anyone

  447. who thinks he stands

  448. take heed lest he fall.

  449. Pride is so dangerous.

  450. And so as Jesus

  451. is teaching them here

  452. in their mixed up questions,

  453. again he is pointing them back

  454. towards himself

  455. and taking their minds

  456. off their pride

  457. and their glory

  458. and all of these things

  459. and to come and see

  460. as we see thirdly

  461. a need for a servant's heart.

  462. The disciples here

  463. asked that question.

  464. We want you to do

  465. whatever we ask.

  466. And Jesus says,

  467. what do you want me

  468. to do for you?

  469. They wanted glory.

  470. But if you read on

  471. to the end of the chapter,

  472. you see another man,

  473. Bartimaeus,

  474. with the same opportunity

  475. where Jesus says,

  476. what do you want me

  477. to do for you?

  478. In verse 51.

  479. And look at the difference

  480. in the response.

  481. The blind man,

  482. Bartimaeus,

  483. came to him and said,

  484. little rabbi,

  485. let me recover my sight.

  486. What would you ask

  487. of Jesus tonight?

  488. For glory

  489. or for gain

  490. in the sense

  491. of seeing Jesus?

  492. We can have mixed up questions,

  493. but what we need to do

  494. is humble ourselves

  495. before God.

  496. It's so easy for us

  497. to forget

  498. what the Lord has done

  499. and why.

  500. And so again,

  501. we don't go on feelings.

  502. We come

  503. to the word of God

  504. and stand

  505. on what the word

  506. of God says.

  507. That he has come

  508. to give his life.

  509. That we might be called

  510. the children

  511. of God.

  512. So we see

  513. mixed up questions.

  514. Thirdly,

  515. we see here

  516. mixed up reactions.

  517. There's a mixture

  518. of reactions here.

  519. The reaction

  520. of the James

  521. and John

  522. to hearing

  523. for a third time

  524. that Jesus will die.

  525. The reaction

  526. is to say

  527. this question,

  528. we want one

  529. to sit

  530. on the right

  531. and one

  532. to sit on the left

  533. in your glory.

  534. And Jesus

  535. rebukes

  536. James and John.

  537. But the ten

  538. are also there

  539. as well.

  540. And you notice

  541. that

  542. excuse me,

  543. you notice that

  544. when he begins

  545. to help them

  546. to understand.

  547. When he talks

  548. about the cup

  549. and all of these

  550. things,

  551. you know that

  552. all of these

  553. things are to come.

  554. But then he goes

  555. on to teach them

  556. about what it is

  557. to serve,

  558. to be a servant.

  559. The other ten

  560. were indignant,

  561. it says.

  562. When they heard

  563. in verse 41,

  564. when the ten

  565. heard it,

  566. they began

  567. to be indignant

  568. at James

  569. and John.

  570. You wonder

  571. if that was

  572. their first reaction.

  573. You wonder

  574. if when they heard

  575. James and John

  576. ask this question,

  577. that would come

  578. into our heart

  579. as well

  580. and say,

  581. wish I'd

  582. asked that first.

  583. Wouldn't it be great

  584. if I could sit

  585. on the right

  586. or on the left

  587. of Jesus

  588. in glory?

  589. You can almost

  590. imagine the other ten

  591. thinking these thoughts

  592. because it's most

  593. naturally what we

  594. might think ourselves

  595. if we heard somebody

  596. asking Jesus that.

  597. But the reply

  598. after Jesus

  599. has rebuked them,

  600. when he says to them,

  601. you don't know

  602. what you are asking,

  603. the response

  604. of the ten

  605. is then this

  606. indignant response

  607. towards James

  608. and John.

  609. They're almost

  610. tut-tutting

  611. James and John

  612. now,

  613. forever daring

  614. to think of

  615. asking that question.

  616. But the thing is

  617. that as you see

  618. Jesus teaching

  619. here,

  620. you see that

  621. Jesus sees

  622. into the hearts

  623. of all.

  624. Not just

  625. James and John

  626. who had asked

  627. the question,

  628. but the other ten

  629. as well.

  630. But when you see

  631. in verse 42,

  632. it says,

  633. Jesus called

  634. them to him

  635. and said

  636. to them,

  637. this is them

  638. all together,

  639. you know

  640. that those

  641. who are considered

  642. rulers of the

  643. Gentiles

  644. lorded over

  645. them,

  646. and their

  647. great ones

  648. exercise

  649. authority over

  650. them,

  651. but it shall

  652. not be so

  653. among you.

  654. He is saying

  655. this is not

  656. to be you.

  657. Instead,

  658. you are to

  659. have a

  660. servant's

  661. heart,

  662. but whoever

  663. would be

  664. great among

  665. you must

  666. be your

  667. servant,

  668. and whoever

  669. would be

  670. first among

  671. you must

  672. be slave,

  673. which is the

  674. same word,

  675. servant of

  676. all.

  677. So they are

  678. told this is

  679. what our

  680. hearts are

  681. to be like,

  682. not looking

  683. for glory,

  684. but for giving

  685. service to

  686. the Lord.

  687. the Lord.

  688. Why?

  689. Well,

  690. Jesus gives

  691. them the

  692. reason why.

  693. In verse

  694. 45,

  695. for even

  696. the Son of

  697. Man came

  698. not to be

  699. served,

  700. but to

  701. serve and

  702. to give

  703. his life

  704. as a

  705. ransom for

  706. many.

  707. There is

  708. the reason.

  709. Not just

  710. why the

  711. disciples should

  712. have that

  713. servant heart,

  714. but every

  715. one of

  716. Jesus'

  717. followers

  718. should have

  719. the servant

  720. heart.

  721. Servant,

  722. as the

  723. word has

  724. here.

  725. When you

  726. look at

  727. its meaning

  728. in the

  729. Greek,

  730. it has

  731. that

  732. servant,

  733. slave

  734. mindset.

  735. It also

  736. has and

  737. is used

  738. for

  739. deacon

  740. or minister.

  741. It's used

  742. in the

  743. same way.

  744. And behind

  745. it all

  746. is the

  747. same thing,

  748. that we

  749. are not

  750. our own.

  751. As one

  752. person put

  753. it,

  754. both words

  755. denote a

  756. man who

  757. is not

  758. at his

  759. own

  760. disposal,

  761. but is

  762. his

  763. master's

  764. purchased

  765. property,

  766. bought to

  767. serve his

  768. master's

  769. needs,

  770. to be at

  771. his

  772. beg and

  773. call every

  774. moment the

  775. slave's

  776. sole business

  777. is to do

  778. as he

  779. is told.

  780. That goes

  781. for all

  782. who are

  783. servants

  784. of Christ.

  785. We are

  786. not our

  787. own.

  788. We are

  789. purchased

  790. with a

  791. price to

  792. serve

  793. our

  794. master.

  795. And so

  796. we are

  797. to live

  798. for our

  799. saviour

  800. because we

  801. see what

  802. he has

  803. done for

  804. us.

  805. For even

  806. the son

  807. of man

  808. came not

  809. to be

  810. served,

  811. but to

  812. serve.

  813. And so

  814. if Jesus

  815. himself came

  816. with his

  817. mindset

  818. not to

  819. be served,

  820. the one

  821. who if

  822. anyone

  823. deserved it

  824. was him,

  825. but no,

  826. he came

  827. to serve

  828. and to

  829. give his

  830. life as

  831. a ransom

  832. for many.

  833. And so

  834. that's what

  835. he asks

  836. of his

  837. people today.

  838. Not to

  839. seek glory,

  840. but to

  841. seek service.

  842. To see

  843. that he

  844. has bought

  845. us with

  846. a price.

  847. To see

  848. what he

  849. has done

  850. for us

  851. and that

  852. we are

  853. fellow

  854. servants

  855. together.

  856. Willing

  857. to do

  858. whatever

  859. he

  860. commands.

  861. That's

  862. what the

  863. love of

  864. Christ

  865. has done

  866. for us.

  867. And when

  868. you see

  869. the example

  870. of Jesus

  871. that even

  872. as he

  873. sat around

  874. the table

  875. with his

  876. disciples,

  877. he washed

  878. his

  879. disciples'

  880. feet.

  881. All that

  882. he did

  883. for his

  884. people,

  885. all that

  886. he gave,

  887. we are

  888. to be

  889. servants,

  890. not

  891. seekers

  892. of glory

  893. for

  894. ourselves.

  895. David

  896. Livingston,

  897. famous

  898. missionary to

  899. Africa in

  900. the 1800s,

  901. many people

  902. praised him

  903. for the

  904. sacrifice that

  905. he made in

  906. leaving his

  907. home and

  908. going to

  909. serve the

  910. Lord in

  911. a foreign

  912. land.

  913. But I

  914. want to

  915. read how

  916. David

  917. Livingston

  918. himself put

  919. it.

  920. He said

  921. this,

  922. people talk

  923. of the

  924. sacrifice I

  925. have made

  926. in spending

  927. so much

  928. of my

  929. life in

  930. Africa.

  931. Can that

  932. be called

  933. a sacrifice

  934. which is

  935. simply

  936. acknowledging

  937. a great

  938. debt we

  939. owe to

  940. our God

  941. which we

  942. can never

  943. repay?

  944. Is that

  945. a sacrifice

  946. which brings

  947. its own

  948. reward in

  949. healthful

  950. activity,

  951. the

  952. consciousness

  953. of doing

  954. good,

  955. peace of

  956. mind,

  957. and a

  958. bright hope

  959. of our

  960. glorious

  961. destiny?

  962. It is

  963. emphatically

  964. no sacrifice,

  965. rather it

  966. is a

  967. privilege.

  968. Anxiety,

  969. sickness,

  970. suffering,

  971. danger,

  972. foregoing

  973. the common

  974. convenience of

  975. this life,

  976. these may

  977. make us

  978. pause and

  979. cause the

  980. spirit to

  981. waver and

  982. the soul

  983. to sink,

  984. but let

  985. this only

  986. be for a

  987. moment.

  988. All these

  989. are nothing

  990. compared with

  991. the glory

  992. which shall

  993. later be

  994. revealed in

  995. and through

  996. us.

  997. I never

  998. made a

  999. sacrifice.

  1000. Of this

  1001. we ought

  1002. not to

  1003. talk when

  1004. we remember

  1005. the great

  1006. sacrifice

  1007. which he

  1008. made who

  1009. left his

  1010. father's

  1011. throne on

  1012. high to

  1013. give himself

  1014. for us.

  1015. Isn't

  1016. that a

  1017. great

  1018. response?

  1019. Where he

  1020. didn't see

  1021. his life

  1022. as a

  1023. sacrifice

  1024. but as

  1025. a privilege

  1026. to serve

  1027. the one

  1028. who left

  1029. the father's

  1030. throne

  1031. to give

  1032. himself

  1033. for us.

  1034. The

  1035. disciples as

  1036. we see

  1037. them here,

  1038. they had

  1039. their mixed

  1040. up feelings.

  1041. They had

  1042. all these

  1043. mixed up

  1044. emotions,

  1045. the mixed

  1046. up questions,

  1047. the mixed

  1048. up reactions,

  1049. but all

  1050. the time

  1051. they were

  1052. learning.

  1053. And so

  1054. are we.

  1055. We are

  1056. learning what

  1057. Jesus Christ

  1058. has done

  1059. for us.

  1060. And the

  1061. more that

  1062. we see

  1063. and the

  1064. more that

  1065. we believe

  1066. in him,

  1067. the more

  1068. we understand

  1069. that it's

  1070. not about

  1071. our glory

  1072. but our

  1073. humbling

  1074. ourselves

  1075. before him,

  1076. the one

  1077. who came

  1078. not to be

  1079. served but

  1080. to serve

  1081. and to

  1082. give his

  1083. life as

  1084. a ransom

  1085. for many.

  1086. In a

  1087. day of

  1088. remembrance,

  1089. may we

  1090. remember the

  1091. one who

  1092. gave his

  1093. life as

  1094. a ransom

  1095. for many

  1096. and remember

  1097. him by

  1098. humbly

  1099. serving him

  1100. and following

  1101. him,

  1102. leaning on

  1103. his word.

  1104. Let us

  1105. pray.

  1106. Lord,

  1107. our

  1108. gracious

  1109. God,

  1110. we do

  1111. thank you

  1112. for the

  1113. humble

  1114. service

  1115. of our

  1116. Lord Jesus

  1117. Christ,

  1118. the one

  1119. who did

  1120. not consider

  1121. equality

  1122. with God

  1123. a thing

  1124. to be

  1125. grasped

  1126. but made

  1127. himself

  1128. nothing.

  1129. We thank

  1130. you that

  1131. in Jesus

  1132. we see

  1133. the one

  1134. who came

  1135. and could

  1136. and perhaps

  1137. we would

  1138. say should

  1139. have been

  1140. served

  1141. and yet

  1142. we see

  1143. him

  1144. despised

  1145. and rejected.

  1146. We see

  1147. him even

  1148. here reminding

  1149. of the

  1150. very purpose

  1151. that he

  1152. came as

  1153. he made

  1154. his way

  1155. to Jerusalem

  1156. to give

  1157. his life

  1158. but that

  1159. the hope

  1160. was as

  1161. the hope

  1162. still is

  1163. of the

  1164. resurrection

  1165. and we

  1166. thank you

  1167. for all

  1168. the promises

  1169. that we

  1170. find to

  1171. that end

  1172. in your

  1173. word of

  1174. the one

  1175. who came

  1176. not to

  1177. be

  1178. served

  1179. but to

  1180. serve

  1181. and to

  1182. give his

  1183. life as

  1184. a ransom

  1185. for many.

  1186. May it

  1187. encourage

  1188. us

  1189. may it

  1190. humble

  1191. us

  1192. and may

  1193. it

  1194. make

  1195. ourselves

  1196. cast

  1197. ourselves

  1198. upon

  1199. him

  1200. who

  1201. came

  1202. from

  1203. the

  1204. father's

  1205. throne

  1206. to

  1207. give

  1208. himself

  1209. for us

  1210. that we

  1211. might see

  1212. the privilege

  1213. that there

  1214. is in

  1215. following

  1216. him

  1217. and believing

  1218. in him

  1219. and praising

  1220. him

  1221. with all

  1222. our hearts

  1223. so hear

  1224. our prayers

  1225. and pardon

  1226. our sin

  1227. in Jesus

  1228. name

  1229. Amen

  1230. we're going

  1231. to conclude

  1232. by singing

  1233. to God's

  1234. praise

  1235. in Psalm

  1236. 138

  1237. in the

  1238. Sing

  1239. Psalms

  1240. version

  1241. page

  1242. 179

  1243. Psalm

  1244. 138

  1245. page

  1246. 179

  1247. we'll sing

  1248. from

  1249. verse

  1250. 1

  1251. to

  1252. 3

  1253. we'll

  1254. sing

  1255. from

  1256. verse

  1257. 1

  1258. to

  1259. 3

  1260. to

  1261. God's

  1262. praise

  1263. we

  1264. stand

  1265. to

  1266. sing

  1267. !

  1268. I'll

  1269. praise

  1270. you

  1271. Lord

  1272. with

  1273. all

  1274. my

  1275. heart

  1276. before

  1277. the

  1278. God's

  1279. and

  1280. Savior

  1281. praise

  1282. I'll

  1283. learn

  1284. to

  1285. worship

  1286. holy
