  1. Well, we can turn back to our reading in the book of Romans, chapter 13.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  2. We're going to look at the end of this chapter, verse 11.

  3. Besides this, you know the time that the hour has come for you to wake up from sleep.

  4. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.

  5. The night is far gone, the day is at hand, and so on.

  6. We are reminded this morning in this service that we're checking out of 2025 and checking in to 2026, God willing, in this coming week ahead.

  7. And the year seems to go past quicker.

  8. Each year that passes, time just goes past so quickly.

  9. But as we think about coming to the end of a year and as we think about our lives in general,

  10. how much of our time is taken up with the consideration that we find in these verses that we've just read.

  11. The consideration being the Lord could come today.

  12. The Lord could come today.

  13. The word here is in verse 12.

  14. The night is far gone, the day is at hand.

  15. The reminder here is that the Lord could come at any time.

  16. And yet the reality for us, for many of us, I'm sure, is that we're going on in our lives busy with so many different things.

  17. All we want to do is get through our to-do list to get things done.

  18. And we go on like this day by day, week by week, month by month.

  19. And it can even go into year by year where we're just living our lives in this busy way, trying to get through different things.

  20. But as the year draws to a close, and as we look back over it, even as you think of this time last year, coming to the end of 2024, going into 2025,

  21. think how quickly that time has gone past.

  22. Going through the winter months of January and February as the gales were coming.

  23. Coming into the springtime when there's always that element of newness and freshness.

  24. And looking forward to the summer months, which then pass by so quickly.

  25. Before you know it, you're into the autumn and you're seeing the leaves falling off the trees.

  26. And then here we are on this last Lord's Day of the year.

  27. Looking back just a few days where the shortest day has just come and gone.

  28. And that's the cycle that we live in, this time that keeps going past so quickly.

  29. But how much of what we did or how we were living was motivated by that thought,

  30. well, the Lord could come at any moment.

  31. Are you ready?

  32. Are you ready for that moment when the Lord comes?

  33. That's the warning that we have so much through Scripture.

  34. Jesus himself gave this warning on a number of occasions.

  35. For example, in Matthew 24, verse 42 to 44, he says there,

    Matthew 24:42–44

  36. There's the stark warning that Jesus,

  37. Jesus himself says,

  38. Therefore you also must be ready,

  39. For the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

  40. You don't know, but are you ready?

  41. Are we ready for the Lord's return?

  42. He says there,

  43. Jesus, stay awake.

  44. And it's the same kind of phrase that we have here with Paul in verse 11.

  45. And besides this, you know the time that the hour has come for you to wake from your sleep,

  46. to wake up.

  47. That's what we see here as well.

  48. But we go on, we make plans in our life,

  49. and I'm sure many of us are looking ahead and already making our plans for 2026,

  50. and even some, maybe even looking further ahead than that.

  51. We'll have Easter and summer holidays to think about, getting them booked up.

  52. We'll have maybe if you're at the stage of life, you're in school,

  53. but you're starting to think about what's next.

  54. Maybe after you finish fourth year or sixth year,

  55. you're thinking, what college, what university, what career am I going to follow?

  56. We're all always making plans.

  57. We're always looking ahead.

  58. We need to make plans.

  59. We need to plan ahead in our lives,

  60. but do our plans reflect God and his will for us?

  61. Are your plans, are our plans,

  62. are they in light of the fact of the Lord's coming

  63. and being ready for that day?

  64. James, in the letter of James in chapter 4,

  65. it says this,

  66. Come now, you who say,

  67. Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town

  68. and spend a year there and trade and make profit.

  69. Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring.

  70. What is your life?

  71. For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.

  72. Instead, you ought to say,

  73. If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.

  74. Again, James gives that warning to us.

  75. We're making our plans,

  76. but we do not know what tomorrow will bring.

  77. So there's warnings for us all the way through Scripture.

  78. And as we turn to Romans chapter 13 here,

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  79. and as we ask that question,

  80. Are we ready for the Lord's return?

  81. Romans chapter 12 begins in verse 1 and 2 with,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  82. again, it's instructions in living in our lives,

  83. but it's living in the present,

  84. thinking of the past mercies of God, if you like.

  85. Chapter 12 begins with that.

  86. And at the end of chapter 13,

  87. it's coming to the point in verse 11 to 14,

  88. where it's living in the present

  89. in light of the Lord's return.

  90. So chapter 12 begins kind of looking back,

  91. living in the present.

  92. Chapter 13 ends with living in the present,

  93. but looking always ahead to the Lord's return,

  94. without that knowledge of just when it will be.

  95. And so there's an urgency here.

  96. There's a great need here presented by Paul

  97. to us this evening,

  98. to ourselves,

  99. looking back in our lives,

  100. living in light of God's past mercies,

  101. all that he has done for us,

  102. and especially all that he has done for us in Christ.

  103. But living in the present,

  104. looking ahead,

  105. reminded that the day is coming

  106. when the Lord will come again.

  107. And so we are warned in these verses.

  108. There's three warnings for us this evening

  109. that I want to take from these verses together.

  110. Three warnings as we come to the end of this year,

  111. and God willing,

  112. as we go into a new year,

  113. are we doing so in light of the Lord

  114. and the light that he could come at any moment?

  115. And so the first warning for us

  116. is those words,

  117. wake up.

  118. Wake up in verse 11.

  119. Besides this,

  120. you know the time that the hour has come

  121. for you to wake from your sleep.

  122. Time to wake up.

  123. Those words that we love to hear in the morning.

  124. It's time to get up.

  125. But it's not just about getting up in the morning.

  126. It's much more than that.

  127. It's time to wake from the slumber

  128. that we are in in life,

  129. when we are just sleeping our way through life,

  130. unaware of eternity,

  131. unaware that the Lord could come at any time.

  132. You see,

  133. this is not just a gentle coming round

  134. after a good night's sleep.

  135. This is not just slowly opening your eyes

  136. and thinking,

  137. well,

  138. I had a good 8,

  139. 10,

  140. 12 hours sleep there.

  141. This is a wake-up call.

  142. This is just a shaking awake

  143. in the middle of the night almost

  144. when you're just sound asleep.

  145. We're not paying attention.

  146. We're not aware

  147. of what's going on around us.

  148. There's a danger around us

  149. that we're unaware of,

  150. and we are being woken up.

  151. That's the cry of Paul here,

  152. to wake up.

  153. This week,

  154. God willing,

  155. we'll be counting down

  156. to a time that we can see coming.

  157. On New Year's Eve,

  158. it's always the case

  159. that you have the countdown to midnight,

  160. countdown to the new year coming in.

  161. And we know it's coming.

  162. We can see it coming.

  163. We've had it in the past.

  164. God willing,

  165. we'll have it this week.

  166. We live in light of that.

  167. A new year is coming in.

  168. But we also live in light

  169. of so much uncertainty,

  170. so much that we're unsure of,

  171. so much that we don't know.

  172. Because there are other things

  173. that alarm us

  174. and wake us up at different times.

  175. You think of being off just now.

  176. If you're off for a few days,

  177. or even if you're lucky enough

  178. to be off for a fortnight,

  179. and the alarm gets switched off.

  180. It's not going off every morning

  181. to go to school or to go to work.

  182. And each morning,

  183. it's probably maybe getting

  184. a little bit later each morning.

  185. You're getting used to sleeping

  186. in more and more.

  187. But when you go back to work

  188. or when you go back to school

  189. and when the alarm is set

  190. for that first day back,

  191. it comes as a shock.

  192. It comes as something

  193. that startles you awake

  194. because you got so used

  195. to it not being there,

  196. but now it's there again

  197. and it just wakes you up

  198. with a startle.

  199. It's the same with other things

  200. that we see.

  201. So many things now

  202. that have alarms

  203. that can startle us.

  204. For example,

  205. your car,

  206. your dashboard,

  207. it'll light up

  208. with a warning light

  209. unexpectedly

  210. and make a noise

  211. or even slow down

  212. to a stop.

  213. And you don't see it coming,

  214. but it just comes

  215. out of the blue.

  216. There's no warning.

  217. So many pieces of machinery

  218. or things that we're working

  219. with these days,

  220. there's so many warnings

  221. that'll just come

  222. out of the blue

  223. that startle us.

  224. And all of these things,

  225. it's a question of,

  226. well, what do we do with them?

  227. What do we do with the alarm

  228. going off in the morning

  229. when we don't want to hear it?

  230. Well, there's three things.

  231. We can just ignore it.

  232. We can hit the snooze button

  233. or we can listen to it

  234. and actually do something

  235. about it.

  236. And that's the warning

  237. that Paul is giving us here

  238. in this wake up

  239. from your sleep.

  240. Wake up from where you are

  241. just now.

  242. What are you going to do?

  243. Are you going to choose

  244. to just ignore this word?

  245. Come to the end of another year

  246. and just choose another time.

  247. Are you going to choose

  248. to snooze it,

  249. to pause it and say,

  250. we'll come back to that.

  251. Or are you going to listen to it?

  252. That's the warning of the gospel,

  253. to be aware of the danger

  254. that we are in.

  255. That if we do not have Christ,

  256. if we are not trusting in him fully,

  257. then we are in danger.

  258. Because you see,

  259. the second half of this verse says,

  260. for salvation is nearer to us now

  261. than when we first believed.

  262. Time is moving on.

  263. Time is fast moving on.

  264. Are you awake?

  265. Are you looking to Jesus?

  266. Jesus, as he says himself,

  267. stay awake for you do not know

  268. the day your Lord is coming.

  269. That's the warning

  270. that's ringing in our ears.

  271. It's time to wake up.

  272. Are you awake?

  273. Do you hear this alarm going off?

  274. Do you hear this warning sound

  275. of the gospel as we're ringing

  276. in your ear?

  277. Has it registered?

  278. Who is the warning for?

  279. Well, it's for us all.

  280. Even if you're a Christian

  281. sitting in here tonight,

  282. it's not to sit comfortably

  283. and think,

  284. well, I'm all right.

  285. It's for every one of us,

  286. for the Christian

  287. and for those who are seeking the Lord,

  288. for those who have

  289. no interest in the Lord,

  290. the warning is for us all.

  291. Because you see,

  292. it uses the word there,

  293. salvation is nearer to us now

  294. than when we first believed.

  295. The wake-up call

  296. is to the Christian

  297. as well as the non-Christian.

  298. It's for everyone

  299. to wake up from the slumber

  300. that we are in.

  301. That's the warning

  302. that Paul is giving us here.

  303. Salvation is nearer

  304. than when you first believed.

  305. So the warning is here

  306. in light of time and seasons

  307. and the time that goes on

  308. so quickly.

  309. And the idea here is that

  310. every one of us

  311. should be looking around us

  312. and seeing the changing world

  313. in which we live.

  314. When we see

  315. the way the Scripture

  316. teaches,

  317. the way it goes through

  318. from the Old Testament

  319. to the New Testament,

  320. every warning that the Lord

  321. is giving,

  322. as you think of the Old Testament,

  323. he's warning of things

  324. that are to come.

  325. You see it fulfilled.

  326. You see the prophets' warning

  327. of invasions coming.

  328. You see the prophets' warning

  329. of a people turning away from God

  330. and there's going to be consequences.

  331. And you see them fulfilled.

  332. You see nations coming

  333. and taking God's people captive.

  334. You see a Redeemer being prophesied.

  335. You see the coming

  336. of the Lord Jesus fulfilled

  337. in the Scripture,

  338. what we've been remembering

  339. in this past week.

  340. The Lord Jesus

  341. born into this world

  342. as a man.

  343. You see that foretold.

  344. You see it fulfilled.

  345. And so it goes on.

  346. You see the warnings

  347. in the New Testament

  348. of a world

  349. that will go into decline

  350. and turning away from God.

  351. We see that being fulfilled

  352. in our own day.

  353. But behind all of these warnings now

  354. is the Lord will come.

  355. The Lord will come again.

  356. And so he's saying

  357. it is time to wake up.

  358. Every one of us

  359. needs to wake up.

  360. Too many people

  361. are just sleeping

  362. their way through life.

  363. Christians included.

  364. We are not aware

  365. of living in light

  366. of the Lord's return.

  367. I'm sure as you've been

  368. enjoying meals

  369. in this past week

  370. and maybe just having

  371. a bit more time

  372. to rest and relax.

  373. After a meal

  374. you go and sit down

  375. and you say

  376. I'm going to watch

  377. something on the television.

  378. I'm going to watch

  379. maybe the football.

  380. I'm going to watch

  381. a soap.

  382. I'm going to watch

  383. a movie.

  384. So you sit down

  385. to relax and watch it.

  386. How long has it taken

  387. until you're asleep?

  388. You've had a big meal.

  389. You're sitting maybe

  390. in a warm room

  391. and within 5, 10, 15 minutes

  392. you're away with it.

  393. You're sleeping

  394. in that chair.

  395. We're out of touch

  396. because when you're sleeping

  397. you're not aware

  398. of things that are going on

  399. round about you.

  400. And there's times

  401. where you can just

  402. doze off like that.

  403. And it's good for us

  404. to get a rest,

  405. to get a sleep.

  406. But there's other times

  407. when there's no excuse

  408. for sleeping.

  409. And especially

  410. as we think of

  411. what Paul is saying

  412. to us here

  413. is not to sleep

  414. our way through life

  415. unaware of God,

  416. ignoring the warning

  417. of the gospel,

  418. ignoring all that

  419. he is saying to us.

  420. It is time

  421. to wake up

  422. because we're living

  423. in light of the return

  424. of the Lord.

  425. Have we been awake

  426. this last year

  427. or have we been sleeping

  428. our way through it?

  429. There's an urgency

  430. in these words

  431. that as a people

  432. we have to take heed of.

  433. One person

  434. put it like this.

  435. In the midst

  436. of a generation

  437. screaming for answers,

  438. Christians are stuttering.

  439. Christians are sleeping.

  440. What a warning

  441. there is in these words

  442. for us.

  443. Because we get

  444. so complacent,

  445. so comfortable in life

  446. that we're not living

  447. in light of the imminent

  448. return of the Lord

  449. that it could be

  450. at any moment.

  451. And when we lose

  452. that sight

  453. we lose that

  454. urgency

  455. in it all.

  456. So we are being called

  457. to wake up

  458. as a people.

  459. The second thing

  460. we're being told here

  461. is to watch out.

  462. We see this

  463. in verse 12.

  464. The night is far gone,

  465. the day is at hand.

  466. So let us

  467. cast off

  468. the works

  469. of darkness

  470. and put on

  471. the armour

  472. of light.

  473. What are we doing

  474. with our lives?

  475. That's the question

  476. being asked

  477. in this verse.

  478. And again,

  479. it's in light

  480. of the day

  481. being at hand.

  482. But you see here

  483. that there is

  484. the works of darkness

  485. and the armour

  486. !

  487. of light.

  488. the difference

  489. is there.

  490. And so how are we

  491. living our lives

  492. as we

  493. wake up

  494. of our slumber?

  495. What are we seeing

  496. around us?

  497. What are we seeing

  498. in our people?

  499. What are we seeing

  500. in our communities?

  501. What are we seeing

  502. in our church?

  503. If it's time

  504. to wake up

  505. what are we

  506. watching out for?

  507. Well,

  508. what are our works?

  509. Paul here

  510. is saying

  511. it is time

  512. then to cast

  513. off the works

  514. of darkness

  515. and put on

  516. the armour

  517. of light.

  518. It's about

  519. making sure

  520. that we are

  521. doing right

  522. with the Lord.

  523. Light and darkness

  524. are opposite.

  525. Paul,

  526. writing to the

  527. Ephesians,

  528. says it as well.

  529. He says it

  530. in chapter 5

  531. verse 13,

  532. but when anything

  533. is exposed

  534. by the light

  535. it becomes visible.

  536. For anything

  537. that becomes visible

  538. is light.

  539. Therefore it says

  540. awake,

  541. O sleeper,

  542. and arise

  543. from the dead

  544. and Christ

  545. will shine

  546. in you.

  547. Again,

  548. it's that warning

  549. of wake up.

  550. Wake up.

  551. See the light

  552. of Christ

  553. and let the light

  554. of Christ

  555. shine in you.

  556. But he says

  557. arise from the dead.

  558. We are dead

  559. in darkness.

  560. That is the place

  561. that darkness

  562. so often represents

  563. in the word of God.

  564. it's our place

  565. of being lost.

  566. Whether it's

  567. in this life

  568. or whether it's

  569. in eternity.

  570. It's a place

  571. of darkness

  572. eternally

  573. where there's

  574. wailing and

  575. gnashing of teeth.

  576. It's a place

  577. of darkness

  578. in this life

  579. when we are

  580. ignorant

  581. and ignore

  582. the warnings

  583. of the gospel,

  584. turn away

  585. from God,

  586. we are in

  587. darkness.

  588. And so Paul

  589. is writing here

  590. to the Christians

  591. in Rome

  592. saying in the

  593. midst of this

  594. time that you

  595. are living,

  596. which was a

  597. time of

  598. crisis in

  599. so many ways,

  600. when they

  601. were being

  602. persecuted

  603. and all that

  604. was happening

  605. in the Christian

  606. church at this

  607. time,

  608. it was making

  609. so many

  610. turn away.

  611. Or the danger

  612. was that they

  613. would turn back

  614. to the darkness.

  615. darkness.

  616. But he's

  617. warning them

  618. here,

  619. it is not

  620. a time

  621. to turn back.

  622. He's saying

  623. cast off

  624. the works

  625. of darkness

  626. and put on

  627. the armour

  628. of light.

  629. The armour

  630. of light,

  631. so it's this

  632. defence

  633. that you're

  634. putting on.

  635. It's this

  636. protection

  637. that you're

  638. putting on.

  639. The armour

  640. of light,

  641. the same

  642. as Paul

  643. speaks of

  644. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  645. chapter 6,

  646. the armour

  647. of God.

  648. what we have

  649. available for

  650. us in the

  651. gospel.

  652. All the

  653. powers that

  654. we have

  655. when we

  656. see the

  657. powers of

  658. darkness

  659. that are

  660. spoken of

  661. so often

  662. in the

  663. scriptures,

  664. you also

  665. have the

  666. power of

  667. the light

  668. of the

  669. gospel.

  670. The armour

  671. of light

  672. is what we

  673. have available

  674. to us

  675. here.

  676. And what

  677. he's saying

  678. is now

  679. is the

  680. time to

  681. trust in

  682. the Lord.

  683. Watch out

  684. for what

  685. you are

  686. doing.

  687. Watch out

  688. for what

  689. is going

  690. on around

  691. you.

  692. Because

  693. every day

  694. there are

  695. people dying

  696. without the

  697. Lord who

  698. are going

  699. to a

  700. lost

  701. eternity.

  702. Darkness

  703. and light

  704. are the

  705. opposite.

  706. And where

  707. do you want

  708. to spend

  709. eternity?

  710. Where do

  711. you want

  712. to be

  713. but with

  714. the Lord

  715. surely

  716. for all

  717. eternity?

  718. The forces

  719. of evil

  720. are all

  721. around us.

  722. It's a time

  723. of year when

  724. we can maybe

  725. watch many

  726. of these

  727. movies that

  728. portray

  729. good and

  730. evil fighting

  731. against each

  732. other.

  733. James Bond

  734. was always

  735. a Christmas

  736. film back

  737. in the

  738. day.

  739. The forces

  740. of evil

  741. trying to

  742. gain the

  743. power of

  744. the world,

  745. control of

  746. the world,

  747. and the

  748. superhero

  749. coming in.

  750. The same

  751. with any

  752. kind of

  753. superhero,

  754. like Superman

  755. or Batman

  756. or any

  757. of these

  758. things.

  759. It's always

  760. these two

  761. forces coming

  762. against each

  763. other.

  764. And it's

  765. far-fetched

  766. in so many

  767. ways.

  768. But when

  769. you look at

  770. the scriptures

  771. it reminds

  772. us of the

  773. reality of

  774. this battle

  775. that is

  776. going on

  777. between the

  778. forces of

  779. evil and

  780. the power

  781. of God.

  782. There is

  783. this darkness

  784. that seeks

  785. to overcome.

  786. But Paul

  787. is saying

  788. watch out

  789. for this.

  790. Put on

  791. the armour

  792. of light.

  793. And so

  794. we are to

  795. wake up

  796. of our

  797. slumber

  798. and recognise

  799. the seriousness

  800. of the day

  801. that we live

  802. in and to

  803. see that

  804. we are to

  805. be about

  806. the Lord's

  807. business.

  808. We are

  809. reminded of

  810. that this

  811. morning from

  812. Callum as

  813. well.

  814. And somebody

  815. who was

  816. reading this

  817. week put it

  818. like this,

  819. we have a

  820. duty in

  821. this life.

  822. The kind

  823. of things

  824. that we are

  825. to watch

  826. out for

  827. in our

  828. lives.

  829. We have

  830. a duty

  831. first to

  832. the Saviour.

  833. That is

  834. what this

  835. word of

  836. Paul is

  837. bringing the

  838. people back

  839. to, to

  840. the Saviour

  841. who they

  842. are to

  843. see and

  844. know and

  845. love with

  846. all their

  847. hearts.

  848. The Saviour

  849. who is the

  850. light of

  851. the world

  852. and to

  853. put on

  854. this armour

  855. of light

  856. to serve

  857. him

  858. faithfully

  859. who served

  860. his people,

  861. who gave

  862. his life

  863. for his

  864. people.

  865. But they

  866. also said

  867. you have

  868. a duty

  869. to the

  870. saints,

  871. that is

  872. the people

  873. of God.

  874. The duty

  875. is to

  876. carry out

  877. your

  878. responsibilities

  879. to the

  880. church.

  881. That's

  882. what we

  883. are being

  884. called to

  885. here as

  886. well,

  887. as we

  888. are to

  889. watch out

  890. for what

  891. is going

  892. on around

  893. us.

  894. When we

  895. come to

  896. the church,

  897. when we

  898. come to

  899. be part

  900. of the

  901. people of

  902. God,

  903. we make

  904. our vows,

  905. we make

  906. our promises

  907. to each

  908. other that

  909. we will

  910. look out

  911. for one

  912. another,

  913. that we

  914. will pray

  915. for one

  916. another,

  917. that we

  918. will encourage

  919. one another.

  920. That is

  921. what we

  922. are to

  923. be as

  924. the people

  925. of God

  926. to watch

  927. out for

  928. these things.

  929. We don't

  930. let the

  931. power of

  932. darkness

  933. come in

  934. to destroy

  935. these things,

  936. but that we

  937. put on

  938. the armour

  939. of light

  940. to guard

  941. us with

  942. one another.

  943. They also

  944. went on to

  945. say you

  946. have a

  947. duty to

  948. sinners.

  949. You have

  950. a duty

  951. to the

  952. saviour,

  953. you have

  954. a duty

  955. to the

  956. saints,

  957. but you

  958. also have

  959. a duty

  960. to the

  961. sinners.

  962. And that

  963. is the

  964. duty of

  965. the church,

  966. to let

  967. Christ

  968. shine

  969. in us

  970. and through

  971. us,

  972. to let

  973. that light

  974. of the

  975. gospel

  976. shine in

  977. to those

  978. around us,

  979. because our

  980. duty to

  981. sinners is

  982. to tell

  983. them that

  984. they are

  985. lost and

  986. perishing in

  987. the darkness

  988. of this

  989. world,

  990. but that

  991. there is a

  992. saviour who

  993. is able to

  994. save.

  995. We are

  996. called to

  997. be a

  998. witness to

  999. those around

  1000. us.

  1001. So we

  1002. are to

  1003. watch out.

  1004. We are to

  1005. watch out in

  1006. all of these

  1007. relationships with

  1008. our saviour,

  1009. with one

  1010. another,

  1011. and with

  1012. those who

  1013. are lost

  1014. around us.

  1015. We are in

  1016. that crisis

  1017. of the hour

  1018. because the

  1019. day is at

  1020. hand.

  1021. But are we

  1022. living in

  1023. the light of

  1024. the Lord's

  1025. return?

  1026. Are we

  1027. witnessing in

  1028. the light that

  1029. the Lord could

  1030. come at

  1031. any moment?

  1032. Are we

  1033. looking out

  1034. for one

  1035. another in

  1036. light that

  1037. the Lord

  1038. could come

  1039. at any

  1040. time?

  1041. So we

  1042. are to

  1043. watch out

  1044. in all of

  1045. these things.

  1046. The night

  1047. is far

  1048. gone,

  1049. the day

  1050. is at

  1051. hand,

  1052. so let

  1053. us cast

  1054. off the

  1055. works of

  1056. darkness

  1057. and put

  1058. on the

  1059. armour of

  1060. light.

  1061. The final

  1062. thing we

  1063. see here

  1064. is that

  1065. we are to

  1066. walk in

  1067. a particular

  1068. way.

  1069. in verse

  1070. 13,

  1071. let us

  1072. walk

  1073. properly

  1074. as in

  1075. the

  1076. daytime.

  1077. Let us

  1078. walk

  1079. properly

  1080. as in

  1081. the

  1082. daytime.

  1083. So here

  1084. Paul is

  1085. saying that

  1086. our behaviour,

  1087. the way we

  1088. live, the way

  1089. we walk,

  1090. should be in

  1091. light of

  1092. being in

  1093. the day,

  1094. of being

  1095. in the

  1096. light.

  1097. I'm sure

  1098. many of us

  1099. know what it

  1100. is to walk

  1101. around in

  1102. the dark.

  1103. Maybe you're

  1104. in your

  1105. house and

  1106. you get

  1107. up and

  1108. it's

  1109. dark but

  1110. you don't

  1111. want to

  1112. wake up

  1113. anybody

  1114. else so

  1115. you leave

  1116. the lights

  1117. off.

  1118. But as

  1119. you're

  1120. walking

  1121. around,

  1122. you forget

  1123. that you've

  1124. left something

  1125. on the

  1126. floor or

  1127. you forget

  1128. where a

  1129. certain piece

  1130. of furniture

  1131. is and

  1132. without

  1133. recognising

  1134. where you're

  1135. going,

  1136. you knock

  1137. into it or

  1138. you kick

  1139. it, even

  1140. worse if

  1141. you're not

  1142. wearing

  1143. anything on

  1144. your feet

  1145. and you get

  1146. a scream

  1147. of ouch

  1148. when that

  1149. happens.

  1150. We're trying

  1151. to do things

  1152. in the dark

  1153. we're not

  1154. seeing.

  1155. And that's

  1156. the very

  1157. thing the

  1158. gospel speaks

  1159. about.

  1160. We're trying

  1161. to live

  1162. our lives

  1163. apart from

  1164. God,

  1165. thinking we

  1166. know where

  1167. we're going

  1168. and what

  1169. we're doing,

  1170. but all the

  1171. time we're

  1172. just groping

  1173. around in

  1174. the dark.

  1175. Because apart

  1176. from him,

  1177. we are in

  1178. that darkness.

  1179. And so we

  1180. need to walk

  1181. in this light,

  1182. walk in the

  1183. daytime,

  1184. getting away

  1185. from the

  1186. things of

  1187. the darkness,

  1188. getting away

  1189. from the

  1190. things of

  1191. this world

  1192. and putting

  1193. on that

  1194. armour of

  1195. light and

  1196. walking in

  1197. that way.

  1198. The Bible

  1199. describes the

  1200. sinful world

  1201. in which we

  1202. live in as

  1203. darkness.

  1204. And there's

  1205. a contrast

  1206. when we

  1207. think of the

  1208. Christian life

  1209. as living

  1210. in the

  1211. light.

  1212. Paul asks

  1213. that question,

  1214. a rhetorical

  1215. question in

  1216. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 6:14

  1217. chapter 6

  1218. verse 14.

  1219. What

  1220. fellowship has

  1221. light with

  1222. darkness?

  1223. The two

  1224. just don't

  1225. go together.

  1226. And so

  1227. for us,

  1228. it's important

  1229. that we keep

  1230. walking in

  1231. the light

  1232. and walking

  1233. in the light

  1234. of the

  1235. Lord's

  1236. return.

  1237. We think

  1238. this world,

  1239. or so many

  1240. think this

  1241. world,

  1242. is progressive.

  1243. progressive.

  1244. It's found

  1245. its way

  1246. out of the

  1247. darkness of

  1248. Christianity,

  1249. out of the

  1250. dark ages

  1251. which

  1252. Christianity

  1253. is.

  1254. But it's

  1255. so not

  1256. true.

  1257. To go away

  1258. from that

  1259. is to go

  1260. back into

  1261. the darkness,

  1262. to go back

  1263. into the

  1264. world,

  1265. and to go

  1266. back into

  1267. the very

  1268. things that

  1269. the Word

  1270. of God

  1271. condemns.

  1272. darkness.

  1273. The darkness

  1274. that we see

  1275. around us

  1276. in this

  1277. world is

  1278. maybe becoming

  1279. more and

  1280. more prevalent,

  1281. but we

  1282. still have

  1283. the light

  1284. of the

  1285. Gospel.

  1286. We still

  1287. have the

  1288. light of

  1289. the Lord

  1290. Jesus

  1291. Christ.

  1292. Because this

  1293. world is in

  1294. darkness.

  1295. This world

  1296. is in

  1297. darkness

  1298. concerning

  1299. what mankind

  1300. is like.

  1301. We live in

  1302. a world

  1303. where so many

  1304. will say,

  1305. but I'm

  1306. a good

  1307. person.

  1308. And yet

  1309. the Bible

  1310. says there

  1311. is none

  1312. who is

  1313. good.

  1314. We are

  1315. ignorant.

  1316. The

  1317. world is

  1318. in darkness

  1319. as to our

  1320. purpose in

  1321. this life.

  1322. Where so

  1323. many people

  1324. will have

  1325. their own

  1326. goals,

  1327. their own

  1328. targets,

  1329. living for

  1330. self.

  1331. Whereas the

  1332. Scriptures

  1333. teach us

  1334. our great

  1335. purpose is

  1336. to glorify

  1337. God and

  1338. to enjoy

  1339. him forever.

  1340. there is

  1341. this darkness

  1342. and there

  1343. is this

  1344. light.

  1345. The world

  1346. is in

  1347. darkness

  1348. concerning

  1349. death

  1350. and

  1351. eternity.

  1352. Where the

  1353. world

  1354. says,

  1355. well,

  1356. death is

  1357. either the

  1358. end and

  1359. that's it.

  1360. Or you

  1361. see so

  1362. many saying,

  1363. well,

  1364. when there's

  1365. death,

  1366. then we

  1367. all go

  1368. to heaven.

  1369. And we'll

  1370. all enjoy

  1371. being together

  1372. there.

  1373. But the

  1374. reality is

  1375. so different.

  1376. Where death

  1377. usher's in

  1378. eternity.

  1379. And eternity

  1380. in heaven is

  1381. for those

  1382. who believe,

  1383. for those

  1384. who trust

  1385. in the

  1386. Lord Jesus

  1387. Christ.

  1388. Because if

  1389. you don't,

  1390. it's

  1391. darkness.

  1392. darkness.

  1393. And so the

  1394. contrast is

  1395. there for

  1396. us.

  1397. And which

  1398. way are we

  1399. walking as

  1400. we come to

  1401. the end of

  1402. this year?

  1403. Are we

  1404. walking in

  1405. darkness?

  1406. Or are we

  1407. walking in

  1408. light of the

  1409. gospel?

  1410. Are we

  1411. walking in

  1412. light of the

  1413. Lord's

  1414. return at

  1415. any moment?

  1416. Martin Lloyd

  1417. Jones in

  1418. one of

  1419. his books

  1420. on Romans

  1421. said this,

  1422. the world

  1423. would not

  1424. go on

  1425. living as

  1426. it does

  1427. for a

  1428. second if

  1429. it knew

  1430. something about

  1431. the judgment

  1432. to come.

  1433. The world

  1434. would not

  1435. go on

  1436. living as

  1437. it does

  1438. for a

  1439. second if

  1440. it knew

  1441. something of

  1442. the judgment

  1443. to come.

  1444. The Lord

  1445. will come

  1446. to judge.

  1447. We don't

  1448. know when.

  1449. We look

  1450. forward to

  1451. days and

  1452. we live

  1453. for days.

  1454. We plan

  1455. for days.

  1456. We plan

  1457. for things

  1458. that are

  1459. going to

  1460. happen in

  1461. the future.

  1462. And there's

  1463. nothing wrong

  1464. with that

  1465. until we

  1466. leave God

  1467. out of it.

  1468. Until we

  1469. put him

  1470. away.

  1471. Because then

  1472. we're just

  1473. planning for

  1474. darkness.

  1475. But as we

  1476. come to

  1477. the end of

  1478. this year,

  1479. let us

  1480. make sure

  1481. whatever we

  1482. have behind

  1483. us, that

  1484. before us

  1485. we have the

  1486. Lord.

  1487. And that we

  1488. are looking

  1489. to him.

  1490. That we

  1491. are trusting

  1492. in him.

  1493. Faith is

  1494. living in

  1495. light of

  1496. what is to

  1497. come.

  1498. And what

  1499. is to come

  1500. is that the

  1501. day of the

  1502. Lord is

  1503. before us.

  1504. we might

  1505. not even

  1506. get to

  1507. Wednesday

  1508. night's

  1509. bells.

  1510. Because the

  1511. Lord could

  1512. come.

  1513. But are we

  1514. living in

  1515. that way?

  1516. The day

  1517. is at

  1518. hand.

  1519. It is time

  1520. to wake

  1521. up.

  1522. It is time

  1523. to watch

  1524. where we

  1525. are and

  1526. what's going

  1527. on around

  1528. us.

  1529. and it

  1530. is time

  1531. to walk

  1532. in the

  1533. light.

  1534. To put

  1535. our trust

  1536. in the

  1537. Lord Jesus

  1538. Christ.

  1539. To walk

  1540. with him

  1541. that the

  1542. darkness

  1543. will not

  1544. overwhelm

  1545. us.

  1546. Let us

  1547. pray.

  1548. Lord our

  1549. gracious God,

  1550. we do

  1551. thank you

  1552. for the

  1553. light of

  1554. the gospel.

  1555. We thank

  1556. you for

  1557. the light

  1558. that shines

  1559. into our

  1560. hearts

  1561. through

  1562. Jesus

  1563. Christ.

  1564. And we

  1565. pray for

  1566. even that

  1567. light of

  1568. armour of

  1569. light to

  1570. be ours

  1571. in each

  1572. and every

  1573. day.

  1574. That we

  1575. would know

  1576. your protection,

  1577. your grace,

  1578. your peace,

  1579. your mercy

  1580. with us.

  1581. Guide us

  1582. Lord through

  1583. your spirit.

  1584. Guide us

  1585. by your

  1586. light and

  1587. by your

  1588. truth.

  1589. Let them

  1590. shine before

  1591. us today and

  1592. in all the

  1593. days that

  1594. may be ahead

  1595. of us.

  1596. That we

  1597. would know

  1598. your presence

  1599. and your

  1600. peace upon

  1601. us.

  1602. As we

  1603. ask all in

  1604. Jesus name.

  1605. Amen.

  1606. We're going

  1607. to conclude

  1608. by singing

  1609. to God's

  1610. praise in

  1611. Psalm 25,

  1612. the Scottish

  1613. Psalter version.

  1614. Psalm 25

  1615. you'll find

  1616. on page

  1617. 231,

  1618. the first

  1619. version of

  1620. the psalm.

  1621. We're going

  1622. to sing

  1623. from verse

  1624. 4 to

  1625. verse 6,

  1626. the tune

  1627. is Dennis.

  1628. A psalm

  1629. that reminds

  1630. us of

  1631. just looking

  1632. to the

  1633. Lord,

  1634. praying to

  1635. the Lord,

  1636. seeking

  1637. his mercy

  1638. upon us.

  1639. Show me

  1640. thy ways,

  1641. O Lord,

  1642. thy paths,

  1643. O teach

  1644. thou me,

  1645. and do

  1646. thou lead

  1647. me in

  1648. night through

  1649. that in

  1650. my teacher

  1651. be.

  1652. For thou

  1653. art God

  1654. that does

  1655. to me

  1656. salvation

  1657. send,

  1658. and I

  1659. upon thee

  1660. all the

  1661. day

  1662. expecting

  1663. to attend.

  1664. We'll

  1665. sing from

  1666. verse 4

  1667. to 6

  1668. to God's

  1669. praise.

  1670. Amen.

  1671. Amen.

  1672. Amen.

  1673. Amen.

  1674. Amen.

1675. After the benediction, I'll go to the door to my left.

1676. We'll close with the benediction.

1677. Now may grace, mercy, and peace from God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit rest upon and abide with you all now and forevermore.

  1678. Amen.

  1679. Amen.

  1680. Amen.

  1681. Amen.

  1682. Amen.

  1683. Amen.

  1684. Amen.

  1685. Amen.

  1686. Amen.

  1687. Amen.
