  1. If you're able to turn to the book of Acts and follow in Acts chapter 13, that will be very helpful.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  2. I mentioned before we read that this is part of the record of the first missionary journey of Paul and Barnabas recorded in the book of Acts.

  3. And they were initially in the Mediterranean Islands in Cyprus and they left Paphos.

  4. And when they were in these islands, Barnabas took the lead.

  5. He was from Cyprus and probably it was natural and more comfortable for him as someone from those islands to be the first to speak and to engage with the people of Cyprus.

  6. But when they left and went to the mainland of Asia Minor to what we would call Turkey today, Paul seemed to step up and to be the leading spokesman of that missionary team of three who arrived there.

  7. Sadly, the team of three soon became a team of two because John Mark bailed out.

  8. He abandoned his uncle Barnabas and his great friend Paul and went home to Jerusalem.

  9. Later on, he would be an effective servant of Christ.

  10. But Paul certainly had his confidence in Mark shaken by that.

  11. But the work went on.

  12. And so we read that they went on a Sabbath and they had two Sabbath, continuous Sabbaths in the area of Antioch in Pisidia when they were able to speak to the Jewish people and the people who were interested in their faith who gathered with the Jews in the synagogue.

  13. So in the middle of verse 14,

  14. Paul is the same rabbinic style.

  15. He's like a rabbi preaching in the synagogue and he's using his body as well as his words to get attention and to speak.

  16. And he says in the middle of verse 16,

  17. There are lots of speeches in the book of Acts.

  18. Sermons, we might even call them.

  19. Or defences before kings and princes and rulers who held the lives of God's servants in their hands.

  20. The book of Acts is a great encouragement to us in the day that we're living in.

  21. Because we are called like Paul and Barnabas to be missionaries, to be on mission, to be those who are excited by the gospel and its power and who want to share it.

  22. And this book of Acts is different really from all the other books in the word of God.

  23. There's nothing quite like it in the Old Testament.

  24. And the gospels and the letters that make up the rest of the New Testament are different again.

  25. But Acts is a handbook on church life from the first years of the spread of the gospel.

  26. John Calvin spoke about the value of this book to us.

  27. And he said that this book, Acts, is the beginning of the reign of Christ and the renewal of the world.

  28. I think that's a beautiful phrase.

  29. The story of how God will make the world new is being told in this book of Acts.

  30. And the story of how Jesus ascended to heaven, seated at the right hand of God, is ruling as king of nations, king of the church.

  31. The story of the reign of King Jesus starts in the book of Acts.

  32. He ascends in chapter 1, but he says, wait for the Spirit.

  33. And the Spirit comes on the church in power and in the leading and empowering of the Spirit.

  34. Mission takes place.

  35. Thousands are saved.

  36. Many are called to serve God as missionaries.

  37. Peter, in the first 12 chapters, is the main leading apostle.

  38. And most of his ministry is directed to Jerusalem and the Jewish people and Samaria.

  39. And then from chapter 13 onwards, the shift and the focus moves.

  40. Peter is still there, but there's more about Paul.

  41. And Paul becomes the towering figure in the second half of the book of Acts.

  42. And his mission breaks out beyond the Jews to Gentiles and comes to Europe.

  43. Comes into the Roman Empire and eventually will reach our shores as well.

  44. We can learn so much from the first steps that the Lord caused his church to take that will help us to take sensible steps in our day and generation.

  45. So I want to answer a question this morning.

  46. And that is, what do we have to offer?

  47. What do we have to offer Stornoway?

  48. What do we have to offer Lewis?

  49. What do we have to offer Scotland in 2026?

  50. 2,000 years after the time of Paul and the apostles.

  51. The scriptures and books like Acts tell us what we have and what we can share.

  52. What we have to offer.

  53. So let's look at Paul's approach, his method.

  54. Two thoughts this morning about Paul and his offer that will maybe shape us.

  55. And our offer to our nation today.

  56. So the first thought this morning is that Paul's first sermon, as the leading apostle to the Gentiles,

  57. Paul's first sermon offered facts and fulfillment.

  58. Facts and fulfillment.

  59. What do we have to offer?

  60. The same as Paul.

  61. We want content in our faith.

  62. Content, truth in our message for our town, for our nation, for our generation.

  63. We don't dumb things down.

  64. We don't run away from deep truth, from things that will cause our minds to be filled with glory and worship and praise.

  65. But we want to be stretched.

  66. And we want our eyes and our hearts to be opened.

  67. The synagogue rulers said to Barnabas and to Paul,

  68. Do you have a word of exhortation?

  69. That's in verse 15.

  70. A paraklesis.

  71. A word of encouragement.

  72. The New Testament letter to the Hebrews.

  73. The whole letter is described in Hebrews 13.2 as a word of exhortation.

  74. A word of encouragement.

  75. And it's kind of shorthand for what teaching and preaching and evangelism and disciple making is all about.

  76. We take the word of God to mold and shape people.

  77. We take the message of Jesus, the message of the word Old and New Testament,

  78. and it is a word of strengthening.

  79. It is a word of encouragement.

  80. It is a word where God comes alongside you and fills you and makes you fruitful.

  81. He is the comforter, the paraclete, the paracletos, the encouragement,

  82. the exhortation of the word.

  83. It's got to have content.

  84. It's got to address the head and the heart.

  85. It's got to fill your mind with the truth of the gospel and of Jesus,

  86. and that will change your emotional and your will response to these truths.

  87. If we just go for an emotional high,

  88. if we just go for comfort,

  89. without the content of truth like the cross and the resurrection,

  90. people will soon run out of steam.

  91. They will soon be running on empty.

  92. But if our hearts are filled with the glorious word and promises of God,

  93. the devil can do what he wants.

  94. The devil can do his worst.

  95. We are standing on the rock,

  96. and God is our refuge,

  97. and God is our strength.

  98. The style of meeting that Paul was in in the synagogue in Antioch,

  99. Pisidian Antioch, would be very familiar to us.

  100. The way the Jews then worshipped was very like the simple style of Protestant and Reformed worship

  101. that we still see practiced around the world today.

  102. There is a call to worship.

  103. There is a reading of the scripture.

  104. There is a meditation and a teaching from that scripture.

  105. There is a response in songs of praise.

  106. There are, the Psalms were prominent in the synagogue worship,

  107. as they ought to be prominent in our worship and in our praying as well,

  108. shaping the heart.

  109. The liturgy of the Bible becoming the liturgy of the heart.

  110. There is confession of sin,

  111. and there is the sense that sin is being declared forgiven

  112. by the gospel being preached.

  113. That feels familiar to us, doesn't it?

  114. Well, let's never go away from that.

  115. Let's never replace that.

  116. The ordinary means of grace.

  117. The gathering of God's people on the Lord's Day.

  118. The sacraments.

  119. What a blessing they are supposed to be to us as we approach them by faith.

  120. Gatherings for prayer.

  121. Times to encourage one another.

  122. The paraklesis.

  123. The exhortation.

  124. The encouragement.

  125. When the word gets dug into our hearts.

  126. The way we dig our gardens and we feed our plants.

  127. We do that spiritually.

  128. When we open the Bible,

  129. we let it speak.

  130. And we understand its message.

  131. And how did Paul go about this in Antioch of Pisidia?

  132. Well, he gave them fact after fact after fact.

  133. Content.

  134. Information.

  135. He explained the history of salvation.

  136. What God did through the centuries for Israel.

  137. And in this, he's actually copying the approach that the apostles took.

  138. In the first half of the book of Acts,

  139. Peter did the same on the day of Pentecost.

  140. Peter quoted the same Psalms and the same prophecies

  141. that Paul would be quoting to his audience a decade or two later.

  142. And whether they were speaking to Jews who knew the scriptures,

  143. or whether they were building a bridge to non-Jews, Gentiles,

  144. who had very little awareness of the scripture.

  145. The facts were the same.

  146. The doctrine was the same.

  147. The creator who has worked in redeeming, rescuing, saving.

  148. The God of the Exodus.

  149. The God of the monarchy under David.

  150. The God of the promise to David that there would always be a king on David's throne.

  151. These are the things that Peter stressed, that Paul stressed,

  152. and that we today need to be aware of.

  153. We need to have the same approach.

  154. Stephen, in Acts 7, got martyred for giving a speech

  155. to those who took up stones and killed him.

  156. But it's the same.

  157. It's the history of salvation.

  158. It's facts.

  159. Who is God?

  160. What has God done?

  161. And then drawing conclusions that lead people,

  162. challenge people to repent and to believe the gospel.

  163. So we've got facts, but we've also got fulfillment.

  164. We've got information, content.

  165. This is what God has done.

  166. But one of the things the early church was very aware of

  167. was that the story of salvation

  168. is a story that proves the faithfulness and trustworthiness of God.

  169. that God spoke in Isaiah.

  170. That God spoke in the book of Psalms, in the second Psalm, in Psalm 16.

  171. And then God fulfilled what he said.

  172. The promise was fulfilled.

  173. So facts and prophecy fulfilled.

  174. I wonder if you like that kind of teaching

  175. and if you like that kind of preaching

  176. that is rich in Scripture

  177. and making connections between Old and New Testament

  178. and showing you Jesus from all the Scripture.

  179. The New Testament scholar Don Carson

  180. summed up the life of the early church like this.

  181. He said,

  182. Above all, they preach Jesus,

  183. Jesus crucified and risen,

  184. Jesus who pours out his spirit,

  185. Jesus who inaugurates the kingdom,

  186. Jesus who's drawing in Jews and Gentiles alike,

  187. Jesus who's transforming men and women,

  188. Jesus who's anticipating his own return,

  189. Jesus who is already ascended to glory

  190. and who will come again.

  191. He is the man who is God,

  192. who was promised,

  193. and he has come,

  194. and crucially,

  195. he is an answer to death.

  196. He has been raised from the dead.

  197. So our first thought in looking at this passage

  198. is what do we have to offer Scotland?

  199. What do we have to offer our generation?

  200. We offer facts and fulfillment,

  201. the truth of the gospel

  202. and the fulfillment of prophecy.

  203. But the second thing that Paul's first sermon

  204. in Pisidian Antioch offered

  205. and that we have to offer

  206. is resurrection hope through Jesus.

  207. A huge amount of the New Testament teaching

  208. is future focused.

  209. It's focused on the return of Jesus.

  210. It's focused on the resurrection of the body.

  211. And it grounds all of this

  212. in the historical fact

  213. that Jesus uniquely

  214. has been raised from the dead.

  215. Jesus is not just another rabbi.

  216. He's not just another teacher.

  217. He is the one

  218. who has been raised from the dead.

  219. And so as Paul speaks to the people

  220. in the synagogue,

  221. he says in verse 28 and 29,

  222. though they found in him

  223. no guilt worthy of death,

  224. they asked Pilate to have him executed.

  225. And when they'd carried out

  226. all that was written of him,

  227. they took him down from the tree,

  228. the tree of curse,

  229. and they laid him in a tomb.

  230. Verse 30,

  231. but God raised him from the dead.

  232. He appeared to many.

  233. The witnesses are speaking about it.

  234. Verse 32,

  235. we bring you the good news,

  236. the gospel,

  237. that what God promised to the fathers,

  238. this he has fulfilled to us

  239. in their children by raising Jesus.

  240. And he quotes Psalm 2

  241. and Psalm 6,

  242. Isaiah 55

  243. and Psalm 16,

  244. you will not let your Holy One

  245. see corruption.

  246. The resurrection

  247. is a huge deal

  248. for Paul

  249. and for the early church.

  250. And I think

  251. when he went to Gentile groups

  252. in Athens

  253. and in other places,

  254. he had the same basic message,

  255. same basic approach,

  256. whether people knew

  257. the storyline of the Old Testament

  258. or not,

  259. he would speak about

  260. Jesus,

  261. Jesus,

  262. Jesus,

  263. his death

  264. and resurrection.

  265. And so often,

  266. the resurrection hope

  267. was

  268. where people parted

  269. and where people said,

  270. we can't accept that,

  271. we don't believe that,

  272. we don't want to hear this.

  273. It seemed

  274. too incredible

  275. to them.

  276. let me tell you

  277. a little bit

  278. about my

  279. recent ministry

  280. in Inverness

  281. and I hope

  282. it will encourage you.

  283. One of the

  284. opportunities

  285. that I have

  286. is to get into

  287. one of the local

  288. high schools,

  289. the academy

  290. at Milburn.

  291. It's a good school

  292. and it's a really

  293. interesting group

  294. of staff

  295. and of

  296. young people.

  297. and yet

  298. most of them

  299. have no connection

  300. with a gospel church.

  301. So there are

  302. limited ways

  303. to get involvement,

  304. occasional assemblies,

  305. a hot chocolate club

  306. at lunchtime

  307. that chaplains

  308. go and run

  309. maybe at Christmas

  310. or at Easter

  311. that might run

  312. a little video

  313. or something

  314. that we put together

  315. that's shown

  316. in the morning

  317. assembly times,

  318. but it's pretty limited.

  319. But occasionally,

  320. I'll get asked

  321. to meet

  322. the first year pupils,

  323. go into their

  324. classrooms,

  325. spend a period

  326. or two

  327. just answering

  328. questions.

  329. I have to tell you,

  330. I'm amazed

  331. at the questions

  332. young people

  333. have.

  334. 2025,

  335. 2026,

  336. they're not

  337. really asking

  338. about political

  339. stuff.

  340. They're not

  341. asking about

  342. woke stuff.

  343. They're not

  344. asking about

  345. gender ID

  346. stuff.

  347. The young people

  348. are asking,

  349. why are you

  350. a Christian?

  351. Why are you

  352. a minister?

  353. Is there

  354. a heaven?

  355. What happens

  356. when you die?

  357. What is a soul?

  358. What's life

  359. for?

  360. these are

  361. the right

  362. questions

  363. and they

  364. are the

  365. questions

  366. that people

  367. have always

  368. been asking

  369. and they

  370. are the

  371. questions

  372. that the

  373. gospel

  374. answers

  375. and I

  376. suspect

  377. that they

  378. are the

  379. questions

  380. that the

  381. vast majority

  382. of people

  383. that you

  384. know

  385. are asking.

  386. are we

  387. spending

  388. enough time

  389. in the

  390. Bible

  391. and in

  392. prayer

  393. to know

  394. the answer

  395. and be

  396. able to

  397. give a

  398. reason for

  399. the hope

  400. that is

  401. in us?

  402. Are we

  403. spending

  404. enough time

  405. with people

  406. who are

  407. not yet

  408. Christians

  409. so that

  410. they trust

  411. us and

  412. know us

  413. and will

  414. want to

  415. come with

  416. their

  417. question?

  418. That's a

  419. school and

  420. that's a

  421. cohort of

  422. young people.

  423. I wouldn't

  424. say that

  425. they're

  426. necessarily

  427. unique or

  428. unusual but

  429. I find it

  430. so encouraging.

  431. But I

  432. also could

  433. tell you

  434. story after

  435. story of

  436. people in

  437. their

  438. twenties who

  439. walk in

  440. the door of

  441. a city

  442. centre church

  443. full of

  444. questions.

  445. And they're

  446. not people

  447. often who've

  448. grown up

  449. with a

  450. Christian

  451. faith.

  452. They're

  453. often people

  454. who have

  455. grown up

  456. with

  457. atheist

  458. parents and

  459. atheist

  460. grandparents

  461. and they've

  462. gone through

  463. a secular

  464. education that

  465. did not

  466. offer them

  467. any spiritual

  468. challenge or

  469. information at

  470. all.

  471. And yet

  472. they've

  473. arrived at

  474. 18,

  475. they've

  476. arrived at

  477. 20,

  478. 22,

  479. 24,

  480. and they're

  481. saying,

  482. what's the

  483. point of

  484. life?

  485. What

  486. explains

  487. beauty?

  488. What

  489. explains the

  490. variety of

  491. life and

  492. beauty?

  493. Isn't there

  494. a bigger

  495. story?

  496. Isn't there

  497. a deeper

  498. purpose?

  499. And they're

  500. going online

  501. and they're

  502. going to

  503. YouTube and

  504. they're going

  505. to websites

  506. and they're

  507. going on

  508. TikTok and

  509. sometimes they

  510. don't find

  511. rubbish

  512. answers.

  513. By the

  514. grace of

  515. God,

  516. they find a

  517. Christian

  518. answer.

  519. They find

  520. something that

  521. points them to

  522. the Bible.

  523. So they go to

  524. Amazon and

  525. they buy a

  526. Bible and

  527. they say,

  528. let me find

  529. a church.

  530. That's

  531. happening in

  532. France.

  533. It's

  534. happening in

  535. Portugal.

  536. It's

  537. happening in

  538. Spain.

  539. It's

  540. happening in

  541. England.

  542. It's

  543. happening in

  544. Scotland.

  545. It's

  546. happening in

  547. Canada.

  548. It's

  549. amazing.

  550. Are we

  551. praying that

  552. people who

  553. are one or

  554. two or

  555. three generations

  556. away from

  557. the gospel

  558. would be as

  559. open as

  560. many were

  561. in the

  562. book of

  563. Acts?

  564. To at

  565. least hear

  566. about the

  567. resurrection.

  568. To at

  569. least hear

  570. that there

  571. is a

  572. savior and

  573. that we

  574. need a

  575. savior.

  576. That the

  577. universe has

  578. a purpose

  579. and that

  580. there is

  581. a king.

  582. Has this

  583. got through

  584. to your

  585. heart?

  586. I don't

  587. assume that

  588. everybody here

  589. in Kenneth

  590. Street is a

  591. Christian.

  592. I hope

  593. there are

  594. many who

  595. are not

  596. Christians who

  597. are here in

  598. this gathering.

  599. But I hope

  600. the fact that

  601. you're here is

  602. not just to

  603. please a

  604. relative or

  605. a spouse,

  606. but that

  607. you're here

  608. because you

  609. look for

  610. truth and

  611. you look

  612. for meaning.

  613. You will

  614. find it in

  615. Jesus Christ.

  616. Christ.

  617. Paul might

  618. not have

  619. been an

  620. easy man.

  621. He lived

  622. through much

  623. suffering.

  624. He lived

  625. through beatings

  626. and shipwrecks

  627. and all kinds

  628. of things that

  629. might have

  630. made him

  631. cynical about

  632. people or

  633. hardened, but

  634. it didn't

  635. because the

  636. Lord Jesus

  637. showed him

  638. when he was

  639. converted

  640. all that

  641. was ahead

  642. of him

  643. and all

  644. that he

  645. must suffer.

  646. But his

  647. calling

  648. was go

  649. and be

  650. my witness.

  651. Jesus does

  652. the saving.

  653. Paul's job,

  654. go and be

  655. my witness.

  656. That's my

  657. job.

  658. That's your

  659. job.

  660. That's the

  661. job of the

  662. Christian church.

  663. Go and be

  664. my witness.

  665. go and

  666. say,

  667. there's an

  668. answer to

  669. death.

  670. There's an

  671. answer to

  672. the meaning

  673. of life.

  674. We have a

  675. faith in

  676. Jesus Christ

  677. that is quite

  678. different from

  679. all other

  680. belief systems,

  681. quite different

  682. from all

  683. other faiths.

  684. If you

  685. have Muslim

  686. friends,

  687. and I hope

  688. you do,

  689. and I hope

  690. you're a good

  691. friend to

  692. them,

  693. at some

  694. point,

  695. ask them

  696. what they

  697. believe,

  698. and maybe

  699. they'll ask

  700. you what

  701. you believe.

  702. The

  703. fundamental

  704. difference

  705. between the

  706. Christian faith

  707. and perversions

  708. of Christianity

  709. and distortions

  710. of Christianity

  711. in the sects

  712. or whatever,

  713. and the

  714. fundamental

  715. difference

  716. between

  717. Christianity

  718. and Islam

  719. are the

  720. facts

  721. that we

  722. believe,

  723. the

  724. fulfillment

  725. in Jesus

  726. that we

  727. believe,

  728. and crucially,

  729. the story

  730. of the

  731. death and

  732. resurrection

  733. of Jesus.

  734. Islam

  735. denies that

  736. Jesus died

  737. on the cross.

  738. Do you know

  739. that?

  740. Islam says

  741. that God

  742. would never

  743. allow a

  744. true prophet

  745. of God

  746. to suffer

  747. death by

  748. crucifixion.

  749. well,

  750. the facts,

  751. Old and

  752. New Testament,

  753. predict it,

  754. and it is

  755. fulfilled in

  756. history,

  757. and there

  758. is no

  759. salvation

  760. for the

  761. world

  762. unless a

  763. good and

  764. perfect man,

  765. a new

  766. Adam,

  767. suffers and

  768. dies in the

  769. place of

  770. imperfect

  771. men and

  772. women,

  773. and leads

  774. a new

  775. humanity,

  776. back to

  777. the tree

  778. of life,

  779. back to

  780. relationship

  781. with God,

  782. back from

  783. death to

  784. life.

  785. That's

  786. Jesus.

  787. Islam says,

  788. no, no,

  789. he didn't

  790. die,

  791. there's no

  792. death,

  793. there's no

  794. resurrection,

  795. he's just

  796. a prophet.

  797. Jesus is

  798. not just

  799. a prophet,

  800. he's God

  801. in the

  802. flesh,

  803. who died

  804. and defeated

  805. death,

  806. who died

  807. and rose

  808. again.

  809. Other

  810. religions

  811. will tell

  812. you,

  813. go and

  814. be a

  815. better

  816. human,

  817. go and

  818. be a

  819. more loving

  820. human,

  821. go and

  822. be nice,

  823. go and

  824. be forgiving,

  825. go and

  826. be kind.

  827. Well,

  828. how are you

  829. going to

  830. do that?

  831. Because all

  832. the religions

  833. of the world

  834. that tell

  835. you to be

  836. kind and

  837. nice,

  838. they don't

  839. give you

  840. the power,

  841. they don't

  842. give you

  843. the ability

  844. to be a

  845. better human.

  846. But if you

  847. are joined

  848. by faith

  849. to Jesus,

  850. he has

  851. defeated

  852. sin,

  853. he has

  854. defeated

  855. lies,

  856. he has

  857. defeated

  858. death,

  859. and he

  860. lives inside

  861. of his

  862. people.

  863. Don't

  864. make the

  865. mistake of

  866. John Mark,

  867. who left

  868. the battlefield,

  869. left the

  870. mission field,

  871. and just

  872. went home

  873. to comfort.

  874. Later,

  875. John Mark,

  876. thank God,

  877. came back

  878. to the

  879. battle,

  880. came back

  881. to the

  882. mission field,

  883. was restored.

  884. Paul found

  885. him useful

  886. later on.

  887. But look

  888. at the

  889. world,

  890. the way

  891. Paul looked

  892. at the

  893. world.

  894. This

  895. world

  896. belongs

  897. to Jesus.

  898. Let's

  899. go and

  900. get it

  901. for him.

  902. this

  903. town,

  904. this

  905. island,

  906. has a

  907. great need.

  908. Will they

  909. hear from

  910. me and

  911. you and

  912. from the

  913. people of

  914. God in

  915. this

  916. island,

  917. how much

  918. God has

  919. done in

  920. history,

  921. in salvation

  922. history,

  923. and how

  924. much he is

  925. doing

  926. still.

  927. Verse 30,

  928. God raised

  929. him from

  930. the dead.

  931. You're

  932. going to

  933. know lots

  934. of

  935. hurting,

  936. sad,

  937. broken

  938. folk

  939. in the

  940. year that's

  941. ahead.

  942. At some

  943. point,

  944. we have

  945. to go

  946. beyond just

  947. being a

  948. nice

  949. neighbor,

  950. asking how

  951. you're

  952. doing.

  953. If you've

  954. got a

  955. hope that

  956. has an

  957. answer to

  958. death,

  959. you want

  960. to share

  961. that,

  962. and you

  963. want other

  964. people to

  965. have the

  966. hope that

  967. you have.

  968. The great

  969. evangelist

  970. Billy Graham

  971. was around

  972. when the

  973. space program

  974. was getting

  975. going,

  976. and satellites

  977. were getting

  978. launched,

  979. and for the

  980. first time

  981. in the

  982. 50s and

  983. in the

  984. 60s,

  985. photographs

  986. were being

  987. published in

  988. newspapers and

  989. on television

  990. of the

  991. whole globe

  992. photographed

  993. from space

  994. for the

  995. first time.

  996. Billy Graham

  997. was asked

  998. what he

  999. made of

  1000. it all,

  1001. these photos

  1002. of the

  1003. world,

  1004. and his

  1005. answer then

  1006. is one

  1007. that is

  1008. very attractive.

  1009. He said,

  1010. when I see

  1011. these pictures

  1012. of the

  1013. earth,

  1014. sitting in

  1015. the heavens,

  1016. I want to

  1017. reach out

  1018. and grab

  1019. the world

  1020. for God.

  1021. Have we

  1022. lost that?

  1023. Have we

  1024. lost that

  1025. sense that

  1026. this earth

  1027. belongs to

  1028. Christ,

  1029. that the

  1030. nations

  1031. belong to

  1032. him,

  1033. the Psalm

  1034. 2,

  1035. vision of

  1036. reality,

  1037. the Psalm

  1038. 16,

  1039. vision of

  1040. reality.

  1041. This is

  1042. my Father's

  1043. world.

  1044. This is

  1045. my Saviour's

  1046. world.

  1047. I want to

  1048. grab it

  1049. for him

  1050. so that

  1051. he will

  1052. get the

  1053. glory.

  1054. What do

  1055. we have to

  1056. offer Scotland?

  1057. Why are we

  1058. planting churches

  1059. in the borders

  1060. for the first

  1061. time in a

  1062. hundred years?

  1063. churches?

  1064. Why are we

  1065. wanting to

  1066. return to

  1067. the inner

  1068. Hebrides that

  1069. we've left?

  1070. Why are we

  1071. wanting to

  1072. return to the

  1073. Clyde Islands

  1074. that we've

  1075. left?

  1076. Why are we

  1077. wanting to

  1078. have strong

  1079. churches in

  1080. the towns

  1081. of Fife

  1082. or of

  1083. Clackmanonshire

  1084. or Stirlingshire

  1085. or the

  1086. Central

  1087. Belt,

  1088. the East

  1089. Coast?

  1090. Why go

  1091. back to the

  1092. northern counties,

  1093. Caithness and

  1094. Sutherland,

  1095. where there's

  1096. been just a

  1097. decimation of

  1098. the gospel?

  1099. Why?

  1100. Because

  1101. souls are

  1102. precious

  1103. and Christ

  1104. gave us

  1105. all for

  1106. them.

  1107. What do we

  1108. have to

  1109. offer

  1110. Scotland?

  1111. Facts,

  1112. truth,

  1113. sweet

  1114. doctrine,

  1115. fulfillment,

  1116. and

  1117. resurrection,

  1118. life,

  1119. and hope.

  1120. There's

  1121. nothing else

  1122. that will

  1123. change our

  1124. land.

  1125. Change a

  1126. government in

  1127. May might

  1128. make things

  1129. better,

  1130. might make

  1131. things worse,

  1132. but it

  1133. won't save

  1134. the nation.

  1135. A

  1136. revolution

  1137. in Iran

  1138. or a

  1139. revolution

  1140. anywhere else

  1141. on the face

  1142. of the earth

  1143. will change

  1144. some things

  1145. but it

  1146. won't change

  1147. the

  1148. fundamental.

  1149. But the

  1150. gospel,

  1151. Jesus

  1152. says,

  1153. Acts 1,

  1154. 8,

  1155. you shall

  1156. be my

  1157. witnesses

  1158. in Jerusalem

  1159. and in

  1160. Judea

  1161. and to

  1162. the ends

  1163. of the

  1164. earth.

  1165. It's

  1166. still the

  1167. same.

  1168. We are

  1169. sent,

  1170. we are

  1171. on mission

  1172. and it's

  1173. glorious.

  1174. May the

  1175. Lord help

  1176. you here

  1177. in Stornoway

  1178. Free Church

  1179. and your

  1180. sister

  1181. congregations

  1182. in the

  1183. town and

  1184. in the

  1185. island

  1186. to see

  1187. the

  1188. Lamb of

  1189. God

  1190. praised,

  1191. worshipped,

  1192. adored,

  1193. followed

  1194. and may

  1195. this be a

  1196. year of

  1197. good things

  1198. and of

  1199. blessing.

  1200. Lord,

  1201. receive our

  1202. thanks for

  1203. this passage

  1204. and grant

  1205. that it may

  1206. be an

  1207. encouragement

  1208. to us

  1209. to pray

  1210. big prayers,

  1211. mighty

  1212. requests

  1213. to the

  1214. great God

  1215. of heaven

  1216. who can

  1217. only do

  1218. great things.

  1219. We ask

  1220. for our

  1221. nation

  1222. to be

  1223. gifted

  1224. to Jesus.

  1225. We ask

  1226. for this

  1227. community

  1228. and island

  1229. to be

  1230. gifted

  1231. to Jesus

  1232. as his

  1233. reward.

  1234. We ask

  1235. that many

  1236. will come

  1237. to know

  1238. and love

  1239. and fear

  1240. the Lord

  1241. in this

  1242. generation.

  1243. We especially

  1244. remember the

  1245. young

  1246. and those

  1247. who have

  1248. questions

  1249. but yet

  1250. have not

  1251. received an

  1252. answer.

  1253. Show us

  1254. how

  1255. to be

  1256. quick

  1257. and ready

  1258. and clear

  1259. with the

  1260. answer that

  1261. is in

  1262. Jesus.

  1263. And if

  1264. anyone here

  1265. today

  1266. has come

  1267. to find

  1268. the answer

  1269. in recent

  1270. days,

  1271. strengthen

  1272. them

  1273. to go

  1274. forward in

  1275. a life of

  1276. discipleship

  1277. and to

  1278. commit

  1279. themselves

  1280. fully

  1281. to the

  1282. Lord.

  1283. We pray

  1284. in Jesus'

  1285. name.

  1286. Amen.

  1287. Our closing

  1288. praise this

  1289. morning is

  1290. from the

  1291. Sing Psalms

  1292. version of

  1293. Psalm 96,

  1294. a great

  1295. psalm of

  1296. praise and

  1297. worship and

  1298. thanksgiving.

  1299. Psalm 96

  1300. from verse

  1301. 7 to the

  1302. end,

  1303. the vision

  1304. of the

  1305. world

  1306. belonging

  1307. to the

  1308. Lord who

  1309. is its

  1310. king.

  1311. The tune

  1312. is our

  1313. guile,

  1314. Psalm 96

  1315. in

  1316. version

  1317. A from

  1318. verse 7,

  1319. all nations

  1320. to the

  1321. Lord as

  1322. cry,

  1323. the glory

  1324. that is

  1325. due.

  1326. We stand

  1327. and sing.

  1328. All

  1329. nations

  1330. to

  1331. the

  1332. Lord

  1333. as

  1334. cry,

  1335. the

  1336. glory

  1337. that

  1338. is

  1339. due.

  1340. Glory

  1341. and

  1342. strength

  1343. ascribe

  1344. to

  1345. God

  1346. and

  1347. praise

  1348. his

  1349. name

  1350. and

  1351. you.

  1352. A

  1353. durnish

  1354. course

  1355. with

  1356. joy

  1357. and

  1358. ring

  1359. and

  1360. offer

  1361. him

  1362. with

  1363. you.

  1364. Worship
