  1. I'm going to look to the Book of Acts tonight and to continue thinking about this message that Paul preached.

  2. ! The first sermon of the Apostle Paul during his ministry in the first of his three great missionary journeys that are recorded in the Book of Acts.

  3. I mentioned this morning that he was in the company of Barnabas who came from the island of Crete.

  4. And when they visited that island together at the beginning of this missionary journey sent out from Antioch in Syria,

  5. I suppose the leading apostle was Barnabas.

  6. But after leaving the island and going to the mainland of Asia Minor and going to Pisidian Antioch,

  7. they came to see Paul becoming the main spokesman of the mission.

  8. He became the more gifted of the two and the more used by the Lord to spread the message that would one day win the whole world.

  9. The first missionary journey covers Acts chapter 13 and 14.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  10. The narrative begins in Antioch in Syria.

  11. It ends in Antioch in Syria with a report back to the sending church.

  12. And all of that took around about a year and a half, under two years of traveling around 18 to 24 months.

  13. And they visited the islands of the Mediterranean and they visited cities like Perga,

  14. this city where this sermon was in Antioch, in Pisidia, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe.

  15. The message was one of hope.

  16. It was full of the resurrection.

  17. Just to stand back from this particular chapter, this particular passage that we're going to look at tonight,

  18. just to remind you of what Acts is in the Word of God.

  19. John Piper has helpfully commented that Acts is fairly unique in the Scriptures.

  20. It's a book that's in the canon of Scripture to help prevent the church from coasting to a standstill.

  21. It's really easy for that to happen to the Christian church,

  22. especially if things are going quite well or if there are decent numbers or there's plenty money around or something like that.

  23. We can simply think maintenance is all that we need.

  24. We'll just keep going, keep the wheels turning, but to complete Piper's quote,

  25. to prevent the church from coasting to a standstill and entering a maintenance mode

  26. with all the inner wheels turning, working, but going nowhere.

  27. There have been many moments in the history of the global church

  28. where a particular local expression of the Christian faith starts to coast, to plateau and to decline

  29. or comes under the judgment of the Lord.

  30. And I'm pretty convinced that the book of Acts contains the answer to avoid that danger.

  31. This book is saturated in prayer and in the fear of the Lord

  32. and it is driven by the heartbeat of a missionary concern.

  33. Wanting to see outsiders becoming insiders,

  34. wanting to see people who are far away being brought near.

  35. If we lose that prayerful concern and that missionary concern,

  36. we're not really walking in the footsteps of the apostles.

  37. We're not really living like a book of Acts kind of church.

  38. And yet the book of Acts is there in the New Testament to say,

  39. this is what life looks like between the first and second comings of Jesus.

  40. We want to see witness from Jerusalem in ever expanding circles of effect,

  41. like ripples in a pond.

  42. You throw a stone in a pond and the ripples travel to the other side of the pond.

  43. If you stand by a loch or something like that,

  44. you've probably all done this.

  45. You've thrown a stone and you see the little wave that it creates.

  46. Well, the death and the resurrection of Jesus

  47. are a moment at the center of the history of the universe,

  48. sending out ripples.

  49. And depending on how we hear that story and respond to it,

  50. we will either be drawing nearer or drawing further away from life and hope and peace with God.

  51. The church was born in Pisidian Antioch over the course of eight days of ministry.

  52. Two Sabbaths, two Jewish Sabbaths.

  53. Paul and Barnabas witnessing to a little group there.

  54. And on the eighth day, they were thrown out and they had to flee.

  55. But eight days was long enough to establish a living church that continued in that place

  56. and that continued to glorify God for years and years and years to come.

  57. This book of Acts is full of fuel for our prayers and wisdom.

  58. If we want strategies, if we want an idea of who we should be and what we should be doing,

  59. we don't need to look any further.

  60. Title for my message tonight is the gospel goes viral.

  61. It spreads like a contagion.

  62. You see these things sometimes in the news or on social media or something like that,

  63. that a story will be ignored for a long time and then suddenly everyone's talking about it.

  64. It's mentioned, it's discussed, it's gossiped, it spreads all around the world.

  65. And Jesus and his death and resurrection becomes the talking point in Pisidian Antioch.

  66. The church is born and the church grows.

  67. Two things about how this message came and about how it was reacted to tonight.

  68. The first thing is that there is good news for those who break God's law.

  69. The gospel, by definition, is good news.

  70. And the gospel is to be shared with those who are in the wrong before Almighty God.

  71. The gospel is for sinners.

  72. The gospel exposes the fact that we are sinners in need of Christ, in need of grace.

  73. The reason I broke the reading this morning at verse 37 and took it up again tonight at verse 38

  74. is that Paul seems here to be moving to application mode.

  75. He gives us his teaching, his doctrine, in his sermon, lots of Old Testament quotation

  76. in the verses recorded between 13 and 37.

  77. But from verse 38 onwards, he's really bringing the plane down to land with his listeners in that synagogue.

  78. He's giving them the application.

  79. So what?

  80. What should you do with this message of Jesus who's been raised?

  81. And so he says in verse 38,

  82. Let it be known to you therefore.

  83. I want you to take this on board.

  84. I want you to know this, understand it and act upon it, brothers.

  85. That through this man, through Jesus, what do you get through Jesus?

  86. What is the good news of Jesus?

  87. It is that forgiveness is preached, is offered.

  88. Forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you and by him.

  89. Everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.

  90. He was speaking to Jews.

  91. He was speaking to people who were scrupulous in their Sabbath observance.

  92. They went to the synagogue.

  93. They did the things that Jewish people were supposed to do according to the law of Moses.

  94. They would be circumcising their little boys.

  95. They would be thinking about how they paid into the costs of the temple back in Jerusalem.

  96. They would be thinking about the year and how at different stages in the year they obeyed the requirements of the law.

  97. Their home life, even their kitchen, would be governed by the law of Moses.

  98. And Paul says that's fine as far as it goes.

  99. But it does not free you from sin.

  100. The law of Moses actually teaches you how bad your problem of sin is.

  101. The moral law applies to all human beings.

  102. The Ten Commandments.

  103. It applies to me.

  104. It applies to you.

  105. It doesn't matter in what era of world history we live.

  106. It doesn't matter if we live in the Old Covenant or the New Covenant.

  107. It doesn't matter if we're young or old.

  108. The same Ten Commandments are binding on me, binding on my heart, binding on you.

  109. And no amount of temple visiting or synagogue visiting or attempts at keeping the law can fix you.

  110. Because every one of those Ten Commandments has been broken by every human being who ever lived except one.

  111. Only Jesus kept this law.

  112. Only Jesus pleased God at all times.

  113. And this problem that we have sinned and we have offended against God, we're in a deep hole and we are digging it even more deeply.

  114. We cannot climb out of the hole.

  115. Jesus is the good news of forgiveness.

  116. I want to put it to you that if you have religion without a living faith in Jesus,

  117. you are trying to solve a guilt and shame and sin problem with something that will let you down.

  118. Religion isn't going to cut it.

  119. Even versions that are Christianized of religion are just so much self-help.

  120. I was talking to a lad not so many days ago who grew up as a Jehovah's Witness.

  121. And in his early 20s he has turned his back on all of that and he has embraced Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

  122. And as far as I can see, a true and growing Christian disciple.

  123. And he talked about what it was like to be a boy in that particular sect.

  124. That they would do the mission things that they were told they had to do.

  125. To be on side with God.

  126. To be on side with the Kingdom Hall.

  127. They would have to visit people or give out literature or approach doors.

  128. But they would do it as slowly as possible.

  129. It was usually a Saturday morning that he was involved in that as a boy.

  130. As slowly as possible.

  131. Not like Paul wanting the whole city to hear of Jesus.

  132. Not like someone with the joy of salvation that wants everyone to know.

  133. But getting off with as little as possible.

  134. Because it's a drudge.

  135. It's a trial.

  136. It's not a joy.

  137. It's not a pleasure.

  138. It's just ticking a box.

  139. My religion requires me to do this so I'll try and do it.

  140. But my heart isn't in it.

  141. And I suspect if we talk to religious people.

  142. Whether they follow non-Christian paths.

  143. Or versions of Christianity that don't have Christ and the cross at the center.

  144. It's just a burden.

  145. We're trying to carry something.

  146. Paul quotes the book of Habakkuk to his listeners in the synagogue.

  147. And he warns them.

  148. He talks about freedom from these burdens.

  149. Freedom from the law of Moses that they couldn't keep by themselves through Christ and his resurrection.

  150. But in verse 40.

  151. Beware therefore lest what is said and the prophet should come about.

  152. Look you scoffers.

  153. Be astounded and perish for I am doing a work in your days.

  154. A work that you will not believe even if one tells it to you.

  155. Now the background to that was that Habakkuk had a message of invasion.

  156. Of the Babylonians coming to judge the nation.

  157. Because they were just going through the motions.

  158. They were just religious.

  159. There was violence and there was destruction and strife and conflict.

  160. They weren't really repenting of these real sins.

  161. They weren't addressing the root problem of the human heart.

  162. And so Habakkuk says in Habakkuk 1.4

  163. Therefore the law is paralyzed and justice never prevails.

  164. That's why you scoff.

  165. That's why you don't believe.

  166. Even though someone explains it to you.

  167. You won't believe it.

  168. Because you don't deal with the root of your sin problem.

  169. Well here's good news for a world with a sin problem.

  170. Here's good news for a world that cannot climb its way up to God by itself.

  171. God has come down.

  172. God has come into the pit and the miry clay where we are.

  173. God has come down in Jesus Christ.

  174. And God has come under the load that we cannot carry.

  175. And God has saved us through the cross and through the resurrection.

  176. And all that we need to do is repent and believe and put our trust in Jesus.

  177. Now those who opposed Paul and Barnabas in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch.

  178. They shook the dust off their feet when they left that city.

  179. They were rejecting Jesus and his death and resurrection.

  180. And that meant they were condemning themselves.

  181. And just as Jesus told his church to do in Matthew 10 and Mark 6 and Luke 9 and Luke 10.

  182. Jesus said if they won't receive my peace and my word.

  183. Shake the dust off your feet and go to the next town.

  184. And go to the next town.

  185. And go to the next town.

  186. So that folk have the opportunity to hear the good news.

  187. There is a way for lawbreakers to be saved.

  188. But it's not through human effort.

  189. It's not through human religion.

  190. It's through faith.

  191. That's all very well, isn't it?

  192. But I suspect the easy thing to do is to just nod and say,

  193. Yeah, I've heard that since I was a child.

  194. I think that's right.

  195. And not ask the question,

  196. Am I doing this very thing that Jesus warned his compatriots in Israel about?

  197. That Paul was warning the people in the synagogue about?

  198. Am I doing this?

  199. Are you doing this?

  200. That we think,

  201. My problem with sin and my problem with the things that I don't get quite right,

  202. It's quite a small problem.

  203. It's one I'm going to somehow muddle through and fix.

  204. I don't really need God to come down and dramatically save me.

  205. I don't need the Son of God to take my load.

  206. I'm better than a lot of other people.

  207. If there's a piece of your heart that thinks like that,

  208. Talk to God about it and admit that that is a grievous deception and a foolish sin.

  209. To minimize your need, to minimize your sin, to minimize your guilt.

  210. And maybe to say,

  211. I don't need the medicine that maybe some other people need.

  212. We all need the medicine.

  213. We all need the gospel.

  214. We all need Christ.

  215. What Paul says in the synagogue on the second Sabbath when he was there,

  216. Is that he's going to turn to the Gentiles.

  217. He's going to turn to the non-Jews.

  218. Because so many of the Jews are hardening their hearts against the message of the prophets.

  219. And the message of Jesus.

  220. And the message of the apostles.

  221. Not everybody.

  222. But some hardened their hearts.

  223. Be so careful that you don't go home tonight saying,

  224. I can listen to this gospel next week, next month, next year.

  225. It's not important tonight.

  226. It is important tonight.

  227. If you have unconfessed, unforgiving sin in your life,

  228. It separates you from God and eternal life.

  229. And I would not want to leave this building, let alone fall asleep at home tonight,

  230. Without crying out to God,

  231. Deal with my sin.

  232. Give me eternal life.

  233. Be merciful to me.

  234. So there is good news for those who break God's law.

  235. And that's what the verses 38 to 41 are all about.

  236. Don't be like those who are mentioned in the prophet Habakkuk's book,

  237. Who will not believe,

  238. Even if one tells it to you.

  239. But the second thing tonight,

  240. As well as the good news for those who break God's law,

  241. Is the right response to God's gospel.

  242. Verse 42 to the end of the chapter shows us those who responded correctly,

  243. And those who did not respond correctly.

  244. Verse 42,

  245. As they went out,

  246. Went out of the synagogue on the first of the two Sabbaths,

  247. The people begged them that these things might be told them the next Sabbath.

  248. But they didn't wait till the next Sabbath.

  249. Verse 43,

  250. They haven't really left the vicinity of the gathering in the events in verse 43.

  251. After the meeting of the synagogue broke up,

  252. Many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas.

  253. Isn't that interesting?

  254. They heard the gospel,

  255. And some of them became convinced,

  256. There's something here that's real and necessary and true,

  257. And I want to find out more about it.

  258. Maybe that's where you are in your life before God tonight.

  259. Well, they weren't happy to just say,

  260. Well, we'll see what happens.

  261. We'll see if we feel like coming along next week.

  262. They followed Paul and Barnabas.

  263. They wanted to know.

  264. Because it was a big deal to know God,

  265. To know peace with God.

  266. It was a big deal.

  267. And so they spoke with Paul and Barnabas,

  268. And they urged them to continue in the grace of God.

  269. To continue in the way of peace with God through the cross.

  270. Verse 44,

  271. So what has happened in Pisidian Antioch?

  272. The whole city wasn't in the Jewish synagogue on the first Sabbath.

  273. Something has happened in that city

  274. Between one Friday and the next Friday.

  275. The Sabbath was Friday night, Saturday morning.

  276. What happened between the synagogue service breaking up

  277. On the first Sabbath,

  278. And then the following week, seven days later.

  279. What happened to bring the whole city out?

  280. People were talking.

  281. The news of Jesus as the God who became a man,

  282. The God who as a man suffered and tasted death,

  283. The God who took shame onto himself,

  284. And suffered and died on the tree,

  285. On the cross,

  286. That was being talked about in Pisidian Antioch all week.

  287. And the whole city came out to the synagogue

  288. To hear what was going on.

  289. That's why I say the good news of the gospel went viral.

  290. People were talking about it.

  291. I can remember seasons in my own life

  292. Where this seemed to be happening

  293. And people were talking about the gospel

  294. And who's being converted

  295. And who's coming to church

  296. And who's reading the Bible

  297. And who's praying

  298. And who's coming to Bible studies

  299. And prayer meetings.

  300. And sometimes that tide comes in

  301. And sometimes it goes out a bit

  302. And then it comes in again.

  303. But are you looking for that?

  304. Are you praying for that?

  305. Are you expecting that God can do again

  306. What he has done many times before?

  307. Alistair Begg at a conference a while ago

  308. I heard him say the following words

  309. Talking about the local church

  310. And how important it is

  311. In God's work in the world.

  312. Alistair Begg said

  313. The authentic local church

  314. Contains the DNA

  315. Of a remade world.

  316. I like that.

  317. Where you get a few people

  318. There might only be 20, 30, 50, 80, 100

  319. There might be hundreds

  320. There might be thousands

  321. But if it's a real gospel church

  322. That gathers around the word

  323. Gathers around prayer

  324. Gathers around the sacraments

  325. There's something going on there

  326. That has got the seeds of a new creation in it.

  327. It's got the DNA of a remade world.

  328. It's got the power

  329. To make a dead place come alive.

  330. I once came across a photograph

  331. Taken in Chile

  332. In the Atacama Desert

  333. Which is the driest desert on earth.

  334. Some polar regions can be classed as deserts

  335. But outside of the poles

  336. The Atacama in Chile

  337. It's got mountains on one side

  338. That stops clouds bearing rain

  339. It's got the Pacific Ocean on the other side

  340. That takes the wind away from the land

  341. So that there's no chance of rain falling on the ground.

  342. Very different from our dear Hebrides.

  343. It doesn't rain a lot in the Atacama Desert

  344. It's the driest place on earth.

  345. And yet

  346. In the 1970s

  347. It rained heavily there.

  348. And the thing that happened in that desert

  349. That surprised people

  350. And caused thousands of people

  351. To travel there

  352. With their cameras

  353. And take photos of the place

  354. Was that that dry wilderness

  355. That had had no recorded rain

  356. For maybe 300 years

  357. When the rain came

  358. It turned pink

  359. And purple

  360. With a bloom of flowers

  361. A floral bloom

  362. The seed was there

  363. And the life was in the seed

  364. Wherever God's word goes

  365. Wherever God's gospel goes

  366. It has the DNA

  367. Of the new creation

  368. Of the age that is to come

  369. Within it.

  370. And that means

  371. If you are praying

  372. For your children

  373. For your spouse

  374. For your Sunday school group

  375. That you look after

  376. For your youth fellowship

  377. The seed has the life

  378. Of the kingdom in it

  379. And you are praying

  380. That God would water it

  381. And cause it to come alive

  382. A super bloom

  383. When dormant seeds

  384. Burst into life

  385. That is glorious and wonderful

  386. When the word comes in power

  387. Now there is resistance

  388. In verse 45

  389. When the Jews saw the crowds

  390. They were filled with jealousy

  391. Pure envy

  392. Don't like to see

  393. The success

  394. Of the Christian missionaries

  395. And so they began to contradict

  396. What was spoken by Paul

  397. Reviling him

  398. And Paul and Barnabas

  399. Don't shut up

  400. They speak with boldness

  401. It is necessary

  402. That the word of God

  403. Be spoken first to you

  404. Since you thrust it aside

  405. Judge for yourselves

  406. Since you judge yourselves

  407. Unworthy of eternal life

  408. We are turning to the Gentiles

  409. This is fulfilling prophecy actually

  410. This is the role of the Messiah

  411. And the role of the witnesses

  412. Of the Messiah

  413. I have made you a light

  414. For the Gentiles

  415. That you may bring salvation

  416. To the ends of the earth

  417. And the Gentiles rejoiced

  418. And the word of the Lord

  419. Was blessed to them

  420. And many believed

  421. And the word of the Lord

  422. Spread through the region

  423. Verse 49

  424. And despite the opposition

  425. They are filled with joy

  426. And with the Holy Spirit

  427. There is a bloom

  428. There are flowers

  429. There is life

  430. The word of God was honoured

  431. The word of God was shared

  432. And God's sovereignty

  433. Is at work in all of this

  434. And a little bit of persecution

  435. Didn't halt the power of the word

  436. A bit of hassle

  437. Didn't halt the power of the word

  438. What about the islands?

  439. What about Stornoway?

  440. What about our schools?

  441. What about our community?

  442. What about people

  443. With deep, deep hatred

  444. Towards the things of Christ?

  445. They may be being burnt

  446. They may be had a bad experience

  447. They may be being let down badly

  448. By a Christian

  449. Or by a church

  450. And they don't want to touch

  451. This Christianity

  452. With a long, long, long barge pole

  453. While prayer

  454. And love

  455. And gentleness

  456. And the word

  457. Can get through

  458. Because the seed

  459. Has life in it

  460. The word

  461. Has life in it

  462. I want to finish

  463. By giving you three signs

  464. Of a healthy response

  465. To the gospel

  466. I think this will be true

  467. At all times

  468. And in all places

  469. That where God is working

  470. These three signs

  471. Will mark God working

  472. And God's word getting through

  473. And these three signs

  474. Are a hunger for the words

  475. And an active witness

  476. And an overcoming

  477. Of opposition

  478. Through grace

  479. Hunger for the word

  480. Active witness

  481. Overcoming

  482. Opposition

  483. There is hunger

  484. All through this chapter

  485. And indeed all through

  486. Many parts of the book of Acts

  487. There is hunger for the word

  488. Paul's sermon

  489. Quotes Psalm 2

  490. Psalm 16

  491. Isaiah 55

  492. Isaiah 49

  493. Habakkuk chapter 1

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  494. It's full of the word

  495. Paul is a word of God

  496. Man

  497. And God's grace

  498. Is falling

  499. On the word

  500. If you find it hard to pray

  501. Read through

  502. A psalm

  503. And ask God to help you

  504. To turn that psalm

  505. Into your stumbling

  506. Halting prayers

  507. It's the word

  508. That will disciple you

  509. And will help you

  510. To grow spiritually

  511. And to be fruitful

  512. Spiritually

  513. I've hidden your word

  514. In my heart

  515. That I might not

  516. Sin against you

  517. A few chapters on

  518. In chapter 17

  519. We read about

  520. The Bereans

  521. The people there

  522. In chapter 17

  523. Verse 11

  524. Received the message

  525. In Berea

  526. With great eagerness

  527. And examined the scriptures

  528. Every day

  529. To see if what Paul said

  530. Was true

  531. Many of them believed

  532. They searched the scriptures

  533. If you're not sure

  534. If you've got questions

  535. Search the scriptures

  536. It's a sign

  537. Of a healthy response

  538. To the gospel

  539. That we read

  540. And that we

  541. Carefully read

  542. The word of God

  543. The second sign

  544. Is active witness

  545. Again

  546. This passage

  547. Is full of it

  548. Verse 44

  549. The next Sabbath

  550. Almost the whole city

  551. Gathered to hear

  552. The word of the Lord

  553. Verse 49

  554. The word of the Lord

  555. Was spreading

  556. Throughout the whole

  557. Region

  558. I mentioned this morning

  559. That a team

  560. Of three missionaries

  561. Had been reduced

  562. To a team

  563. Of two missionaries

  564. That did not stop

  565. The word spreading

  566. Mark

  567. John Mark

  568. Had left

  569. But the blessing

  570. Of God

  571. Had not left

  572. And so Barnabas

  573. And Paul

  574. See blessing

  575. And their witness

  576. And the witness

  577. Of others

  578. Makes the gospel

  579. Credible

  580. I know

  581. There is live stream

  582. And things like that

  583. And that sometimes

  584. We maybe think

  585. Well

  586. Do I really need

  587. To go out tonight

  588. Nobody will miss me

  589. And I can always

  590. Catch up with the service

  591. Or I can watch it live

  592. And that's true

  593. But if you walk

  594. Into a building

  595. And there are

  596. Hundreds of empty seats

  597. That could be filled

  598. It makes the word

  599. Less credible

  600. To any visitor

  601. Who comes in

  602. Off the street

  603. And I think

  604. This is something

  605. That has happened

  606. Across Europe

  607. In the last

  608. Centuries actually

  609. That many people

  610. Have concluded

  611. That Christianity

  612. Is irrelevant

  613. Because it doesn't

  614. Seem

  615. To affect

  616. People

  617. Doesn't seem

  618. To be precious

  619. To them

  620. Well the gatherings

  621. Of God's people

  622. Should be well

  623. Supported

  624. And the mission

  625. Of God's church

  626. Should be well

  627. Supported

  628. Prayerfully

  629. Financially

  630. And every other way

  631. To show

  632. That we really

  633. Do believe this

  634. And we do

  635. Love and serve

  636. This God

  637. And we want

  638. To be committed

  639. And it may be

  640. That there's a cup

  641. Final on the TV

  642. It may be

  643. That we've had

  644. A hard week

  645. It may be

  646. That we have

  647. A lot of work

  648. To do

  649. In the next few days

  650. But if God

  651. Is great

  652. In our thinking

  653. We will not

  654. Be minimizing

  655. !

  656. Our desire

  657. To honor him

  658. In active

  659. Witness

  660. Romans 1

    Romans 1:16

  661. Verse 16

  662. For I am not

  663. Ashamed of the gospel

  664. I fear that

  665. Many Christians

  666. Seem to be ashamed

  667. I wonder how often

  668. I'm tongue tied

  669. And I'm ashamed

  670. But that gospel

  671. Is God's power

  672. For salvation

  673. For Jew

  674. For Gentile

  675. So when I meet

  676. People

  677. And they ask me

  678. What I do

  679. For a living

  680. When I meet people

  681. And they ask me

  682. What I did

  683. At the weekend

  684. Or what I did

  685. At New Year

  686. Or at Christmas

  687. I want to give them

  688. An answer

  689. That glorifies God

  690. Not to sort of

  691. Show off

  692. Or to

  693. Sort of

  694. You know

  695. Be a

  696. A kind of

  697. Pretend-y

  698. Holy person

  699. But to think

  700. How can I

  701. Answer this

  702. Casual question

  703. With a way

  704. That says

  705. I had a great

  706. Weekend

  707. I spent time

  708. With a family

  709. We ate together

  710. And we got to

  711. Go and worship

  712. Jesus Christ

  713. Together

  714. And that's the

  715. Highlight of our

  716. Week

  717. So important

  718. To us

  719. As a family

  720. Hunger for the

  721. Word

  722. An active

  723. Witness

  724. Matthew Henry

  725. Once said

  726. The spirit of

  727. Christ

  728. Is the spirit

  729. Mission

  730. Do you believe

  731. That

  732. If we have

  733. The spirit

  734. We have

  735. The spirit

  736. To equip us

  737. To be

  738. Missionaries

  739. To be

  740. Witnesses

  741. A hunger for the

  742. Word

  743. An active

  744. Witness

  745. And then

  746. Overcoming

  747. Opposition

  748. And I guess

  749. That sometimes

  750. Just looks like

  751. You keep

  752. Going

  753. Even when

  754. You're tired

  755. Or even

  756. When

  757. It's not

  758. Easy

  759. Verse 45

  760. When the

  761. Jews saw

  762. The crowds

  763. They were

  764. Filled with

  765. Jealousy

  766. They began

  767. To contradict

  768. What was

  769. Spoken by

  770. Paul

  771. Reviling

  772. Him

  773. Reviling

  774. Is a

  775. Strong

  776. Word

  777. My

  778. Colleague

  779. Chris Davidson

  780. At

  781. Merkinj

  782. At the

  783. Church

  784. Plant

  785. In one

  786. Of the

  787. Poorest

  788. Parts

  789. Of the

  790. Highlands

  791. In one

  792. Of the

  793. Most

  794. Economically

  795. Deprived

  796. Postcodes

  797. In

  798. Scotland

  799. Chris

  800. Says

  801. And I

  802. Think he's

  803. Right

  804. If you

  805. Want to

  806. Be a

  807. Gospel

  808. Minister

  809. In

  810. Contemporary

  811. Scotland

  812. You need

  813. A heart

  814. That is

  815. Soft

  816. And gentle

  817. Like

  818. Jesus

  819. And you

  820. Need a

  821. Hide

  822. That is

  823. Tough

  824. Like a

  825. Rhinoceros

  826. It's not

  827. Going to

  828. Be easy

  829. It's not

  830. Going to

  831. Be easy

  832. To be

  833. A deacon

  834. Or an

  835. Elder

  836. It's

  837. Going to

  838. Cost

  839. You

  840. But we

  841. Are called

  842. As disciples

  843. To take

  844. Up the

  845. Cross

  846. It's not

  847. Going to

  848. Be easy

  849. If you

  850. Give up

  851. A career

  852. That's

  853. A good

  854. Career

  855. To take

  856. The wage

  857. Of a

  858. Church

  859. Worker

  860. And go

  861. And spread

  862. The news

  863. Of Jesus

  864. But it's

  865. Worth it

  866. Don't do

  867. It

  868. For earthly

  869. Reward

  870. You overcome

  871. Difficulty

  872. Cost

  873. Opposition

  874. You keep

  875. Going

  876. Verse 50

  877. The Jews

  878. Incited the

  879. Devout

  880. Woman of

  881. High

  882. Standing

  883. And the

  884. Leading

  885. Men of

  886. The city

  887. And stirred

  888. Up

  889. Persecution

  890. Is that

  891. Really

  892. What's

  893. Stopping

  894. Us

  895. Are we

  896. Being

  897. Persecuted

  898. Not

  899. Much

  900. Maybe

  901. Sometimes

  902. People

  903. Have a

  904. We

  905. Laugh

  906. At

  907. Our

  908. Expense

  909. But we're

  910. Not going

  911. To be

  912. Rounded

  913. Up

  914. And put

  915. In jail

  916. Are we

  917. But we

  918. Have brothers

  919. And sisters

  920. Who face

  921. That

  922. In Sudan

  923. And where

  924. Islam is

  925. Sweeping

  926. Through parts

  927. Of Africa

  928. And making

  929. It so hard

  930. To be a

  931. Christian

  932. In parts

  933. Of India

  934. In parts

  935. Of Asia

  936. Hinduism

  937. And buddhism

  938. Can be very

  939. Militant

  940. Atheism

  941. Secular

  942. Can be

  943. Very

  944. Militant

  945. In your

  946. Workplace

  947. Maybe

  948. It's not

  949. Easy

  950. To take

  951. A

  952. Respectful

  953. Gentle

  954. Christian

  955. Stand

  956. But do

  957. It

  958. Commit

  959. Yourself

  960. To God

  961. And do

  962. It

  963. I don't

  964. Think we

  965. Will face

  966. The risk

  967. Of stoning

  968. Paul faced

  969. That in

  970. Chapter

  971. 14

  972. And verse

  973. 19

  974. Because the

  975. Jews from

  976. Antioch

  977. Travelled

  978. 80 miles

  979. To the

  980. Next town

  981. That he

  982. Was in

  983. And stirred

  984. Up trouble

  985. Against him

  986. And tried

  987. To have him

  988. Killed

  989. That's a

  990. Different order

  991. Of difficulty

  992. But he

  993. Overcame it

  994. By grace

  995. By faith

  996. Now what's

  997. The worst

  998. Thing

  999. That's going

  1000. To happen

  1001. To us

  1002. If we

  1003. Look to

  1004. The Lord

  1005. And desire

  1006. To respond

  1007. To the

  1008. Gospel

  1009. As a

  1010. Christian

  1011. Who wants

  1012. To be a

  1013. Witness

  1014. To be a

  1015. Sin

  1016. What's

  1017. What's

  1018. The worst

  1019. That will

  1020. Happen

  1021. To you

  1022. If you

  1023. Are ready

  1024. To follow

  1025. Jesus

  1026. But you're

  1027. Thinking

  1028. Some of

  1029. My friends

  1030. Will tease

  1031. Me

  1032. Tease you

  1033. Isn't it

  1034. Worth it

  1035. That the

  1036. Son of

  1037. God

  1038. Hung

  1039. Naked

  1040. On a

  1041. Tree

  1042. And died

  1043. For you

  1044. Isn't it

  1045. Worth it

  1046. That you

  1047. Might be

  1048. Teased

  1049. By someone

  1050. Nail your

  1051. Colors

  1052. To the

  1053. Mast

  1054. Follow

  1055. Jesus

  1056. He's

  1057. Worth it

  1058. Overcome

  1059. Opposition

  1060. I'm just

  1061. Amazed

  1062. By this

  1063. Chapter

  1064. That there

  1065. Were

  1066. Eight

  1067. Days

  1068. That Paul

  1069. And Barnabas

  1070. Spent in

  1071. That city

  1072. But when

  1073. They left

  1074. It

  1075. They left

  1076. A church

  1077. Free

  1078. Church of

  1079. Scotland

  1080. Has been

  1081. Around

  1082. Since

  1083. 1843

  1084. We're

  1085. Heading

  1086. For another

  1087. Big

  1088. Anniversary

  1089. 2043

  1090. Will have

  1091. Been

  1092. Around

  1093. For two

  1094. Centuries

  1095. I fear

  1096. That we

  1097. Are not

  1098. As tough

  1099. As Paul

  1100. And his

  1101. Companions

  1102. Were

  1103. That we

  1104. Give up

  1105. Too

  1106. Quickly

  1107. That we

  1108. Quit

  1109. Too

  1110. Easily

  1111. And so

  1112. I encourage

  1113. You to

  1114. Find your

  1115. Strength

  1116. And find

  1117. Your joy

  1118. And find

  1119. Your encouragement

  1120. In the

  1121. Gospel

  1122. The good

  1123. News

  1124. For those

  1125. Who break

  1126. God's law

  1127. Come to

  1128. The cross

  1129. And the

  1130. Good news

  1131. That all

  1132. Who come

  1133. With the

  1134. Right

  1135. Response

  1136. To the

  1137. Gospel

  1138. Will be

  1139. Saved

  1140. And will

  1141. Then have

  1142. News to

  1143. Share

  1144. There is

  1145. Encouragement

  1146. Here

  1147. I wonder

  1148. If Scotland

  1149. Is a dry

  1150. Spiritual

  1151. Desert

  1152. More arid

  1153. Than the

  1154. Atacama

  1155. I wonder

  1156. If prayer

  1157. And fasting

  1158. Are needed

  1159. So that the

  1160. Rain begins

  1161. And the

  1162. Seed

  1163. Comes alive

  1164. Father

  1165. In heaven

  1166. We bless

  1167. You for

  1168. Being together

  1169. Under the

  1170. Word today

  1171. For being

  1172. Together under

  1173. The Word

  1174. This evening

  1175. And for

  1176. The pictures

  1177. That we

  1178. Have of

  1179. The growth

  1180. Of the

  1181. Early

  1182. Church

  1183. Despite

  1184. Persecution

  1185. There was

  1186. Response

  1187. !

  1188. There was

  1189. Harvest

  1190. Grant

  1191. Harvest

  1192. And response

  1193. Tonight

  1194. And in

  1195. Our hearts

  1196. And in

  1197. This gathering

  1198. And in

  1199. The weeks

  1200. And the

  1201. Months

  1202. And in

  1203. The years

  1204. To come

  1205. Bless

  1206. Your servant

  1207. Callum

  1208. Smith

  1209. As he

  1210. Ministers

  1211. Here

  1212. And all

  1213. Who are

  1214. Part of

  1215. The team

  1216. Here

  1217. And all

  1218. Who preach

  1219. Here regularly

  1220. In English

  1221. And Gaelic

  1222. Bless the

  1223. Coming weekend

  1224. And the

  1225. Visit of

  1226. Colin

  1227. Macleod

  1228. Next Sunday

  1229. And bless

  1230. The work

  1231. And the

  1232. Witness

  1233. Of all

  1234. Who serve

  1235. You

  1236. Across
