  1. Well, we turn back to our reading in Mark's Gospel, chapter 12, and this parable that we have in verse 1 to verse 12.

  2. The parable of the tenants, as it is called.

  3. It's not just a parable as we see here, Jesus teaching it against the Jewish leaders of the time,

  4. but it's a reminder to us of how we have God's Word to this very day.

  5. At the heart of it is that the Son was sent to them and the Son was rejected.

  6. So this is looking at the Jews of that day.

  7. But then at the end of verse 9, it says,

  8. He will come and destroy the tenants and those who have rejected him and give the vineyard to others.

  9. So that the Gospel is going to go out.

  10. And as with many parts of Scripture, what we find here is a response to Jesus' teaching.

  11. A response to the authority of God's Word.

  12. As a question for ourselves as we begin the service this evening,

  13. what do you do when you hear God's Word speaking to you?

  14. We all hear it.

  15. We all hear God's Word speaking to us.

  16. We heard it this morning.

  17. We hear it this evening.

  18. We hear it so often.

  19. But what do we do with the Word of God?

  20. And what you find as you go through the Scriptures,

  21. you find there are those who delight to hear the Word of God.

  22. You think of the two on the road to Emmaus who met with Jesus there on the way.

  23. And it says that their heart burned within them.

  24. Not with anger.

  25. As we can often think of a burning heart with anger.

  26. It wasn't with anger.

  27. But it was with this amazement, this wonder that Jesus was there opening up the Scriptures to them.

  28. So there is one response to the Word of God.

  29. But as we see again and again throughout God's Word,

  30. there's another response, another burning within the heart.

  31. But it's a burning with anger.

  32. It's a burning with a ferocious anger as we see here as we look at the authority that Jesus was challenging.

  33. As you read through chapter 11 and chapter 12 here in Mark's Gospel,

  34. Jesus has arrived in Jerusalem and he's just a matter of days away from the crucifixion,

  35. from going to the cross.

  36. Why was he going to be crucified?

  37. Well, we could say because it was God's plan.

  38. That God had planned and purposed this from the very beginning.

  39. As we see going through the Old Testament, as we saw this morning,

  40. we thought about Isaiah 53, just touched on that,

  41. how this reminder of Isaiah there speaking about the suffering servant,

  42. the one who was going to give his life.

  43. We could say that's the reason.

  44. But we see it too in another way as well here.

  45. He was going to be crucified because he was at the mercy of people's hands,

  46. those who he caused offense to, those who he upset.

  47. He angered these leaders.

  48. And it was they who were seeking to crucify him as well.

  49. In chapter 11 there in verse 18,

  50. Jesus had come in and seen what they were doing in the temple in Jerusalem.

  51. And he's saying there in verse 17,

  52. that my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations,

  53. but you have made it a den of robber.

  54. So he's speaking to their hearts there.

  55. And what they say is that they sought a way to destroy him in verse 18.

  56. They sought a way to destroy him.

  57. In verse 27 to 33, as we read here,

  58. again, they were challenging his authority,

  59. questioning his authority.

  60. Who is he to say any of these things to us?

  61. And even after this parable at the end in verse 12,

  62. they were seeking to arrest him.

  63. So it still wasn't changing.

  64. Their reaction to God's word was one of,

  65. you will not tell us what to do.

  66. Why was he going to be crucified?

  67. Well, because of what we see here,

  68. not just in their hearts,

  69. but in all the hearts of the people,

  70. in ourselves today as well.

  71. We see that he was going to be crucified

  72. because the world is a sinful world

  73. that needs a saviour, a redeemer.

  74. And he came as that saviour who would give his life.

  75. The son that we read of in this parable,

  76. the son that the master loved.

  77. So the question we face is,

  78. as we were thinking this morning,

  79. whose voice or what voice are we listening to?

  80. Do we trust Jesus as the son of God

  81. or are we looking somewhere else?

  82. Are we looking to do away with him?

  83. Are our hearts burning with desire for him

  84. or burning with anger against him?

  85. So as you go into chapter 12,

  86. Jesus here challenges these religious leaders

  87. with this parable that speaks to them.

  88. He's speaking right into their hearts.

  89. He's getting right into their very soul and being

  90. as to what are they going to do with him.

  91. The parable is something that the people

  92. would have been familiar with.

  93. In those days, very often this kind of situation

  94. would happen.

  95. We sometimes call it today absentee landlords

  96. where somebody owns a vineyard,

  97. in this case in the scriptures,

  98. but they're at a distance.

  99. But they have other workers

  100. who will come and work it for them.

  101. But the landlord ultimately owns it

  102. and will get his share of the profits from it.

  103. And that's what we see here.

  104. This is the parable that Jesus uses.

  105. Verse 1 describes for us a man who planted a vineyard.

  106. And put everything up that was required,

  107. a fence around it.

  108. He dug a wine pit where the wine,

  109. the juice of the grapes,

  110. would be collected in the right season.

  111. He built a tower for a watchman to guard it.

  112. And he had his workers, his servants,

  113. to work it for them.

  114. And he left it in their care.

  115. But when the season came,

  116. when the wine was going to be flowing,

  117. the master would want his share.

  118. And so he would send his servants to them

  119. to gather what he was due.

  120. But then you see the response of those

  121. who were the workers in the vineyard.

  122. In this parable,

  123. the lord of the vineyard,

  124. the master is God.

  125. We see that so clearly.

  126. The vineyard is God's people

  127. that he's caring for.

  128. And the farmers are the Jewish religious leaders

  129. and how they are dealing with God's people.

  130. The servants that the master sends

  131. are the prophets that God sent to his people.

  132. And as we know,

  133. the well-beloved only son

  134. is the Lord Jesus Christ.

  135. These things are so clear to us here.

  136. And it's reminding us of God's grace

  137. and his love towards us.

  138. And that's what we want to take

  139. from this parable as well.

  140. But we see the response

  141. of the farmers.

  142. We see the response

  143. of those who are working the vineyard

  144. for the master.

  145. And we see the response

  146. in how the servants are sent

  147. and what they do with them.

  148. And how it speaks to us

  149. of how we respond

  150. to the word of God.

  151. So we're going to go through it

  152. and look at three different things

  153. in this passage.

  154. First of all,

  155. we see the goodness of God.

  156. The goodness of God.

  157. I want to think about this.

  158. Is it received

  159. or is it rejected?

  160. Received or rejected?

  161. The goodness of God.

  162. The parable,

  163. as Jesus is speaking it to them here,

  164. is very heavy

  165. with Old Testament imagery.

  166. And so the leaders

  167. who he is speaking it to,

  168. they would have known exactly

  169. what he was talking about.

  170. They are questioning Jesus' authority

  171. as we see in chapter 11.

  172. And so he's using this parable

  173. to show them,

  174. well, what are you going to do

  175. with my authority?

  176. Whose authority do you think it is?

  177. And he is showing them

  178. that this authority

  179. foremost is with God.

  180. And they should have been able

  181. to see it immediately

  182. as he speaks this parable to them.

  183. Immediately as God's word

  184. is speaking to them,

  185. they should have been

  186. under conviction of sin here.

  187. The word of God speaking

  188. so clearly to them

  189. that they would have been feeling

  190. just as shying away from Jesus.

  191. Coming to that point

  192. where you would hope

  193. they would just see their sin

  194. and say,

  195. forgive us.

  196. Have mercy on me, a sinner.

  197. That is the response you would want,

  198. but it's not the response

  199. that you see.

  200. Instead, it's their own pride

  201. and self-importance

  202. that comes to the fore.

  203. But when you look at it

  204. in the Old Testament,

  205. you see just why

  206. they should have realized

  207. what Jesus was saying.

  208. For example,

  209. going back to Isaiah again

  210. as we were this morning,

  211. in chapter 5,

  212. verse 1 to 4,

  213. you see just how familiar

  214. this is to what we're reading

  215. here this evening.

  216. Isaiah 5, verse 1,

    Isaiah 5:1

  217. let me sing for my beloved

  218. my love song

  219. concerning his vineyard.

  220. My beloved had a vineyard

  221. on a very fertile hill.

  222. He dug it and cleared it

  223. of stones

  224. and planted it

  225. with choice vines.

  226. He built a watchtower

  227. in the midst of it

  228. and hewed out a wine fat in it

  229. and he looked for it

  230. to yield grapes,

  231. but it yielded wild grapes.

  232. And now,

  233. O inhabitants of Jerusalem

  234. and men of Judah,

  235. judge between me

  236. and my vineyard,

  237. what more was there to do

  238. for my vineyard

  239. that I have not done in it?

  240. When I looked for it

  241. to yield grapes,

  242. why did it yield

  243. wild grapes?

  244. You see how similar

  245. that is to this parable

  246. that Jesus is telling here.

  247. The similarities are there

  248. just so clearly.

  249. And so they should have recognized

  250. what Jesus was speaking about.

  251. They should have recognized

  252. the importance of this.

  253. And as we are hearing

  254. God's word as well,

  255. surely we too recognize

  256. the importance of it

  257. because it's always speaking to us.

  258. Here it is speaking

  259. into the hearts

  260. of these Jewish leaders

  261. into their sin.

  262. And that is what God's word

  263. does for us as well.

  264. It speaks into our hearts

  265. of our sinfulness,

  266. of how far short we fall

  267. of God's glory,

  268. of how much we've done wrong

  269. against him.

  270. And when you look at

  271. what God has done

  272. for his people

  273. in the Old Testament,

  274. how God had tenderly cared

  275. for them.

  276. When you go back to Egypt,

  277. they were in slavery,

  278. they were in bondage,

  279. and yet the Lord

  280. took them out.

  281. He had taken them

  282. through the wilderness,

  283. cared for them there,

  284. given them everything

  285. that they needed.

  286. He took them

  287. into the promised land,

  288. a land flowing

  289. with milk and honey.

  290. There they took root

  291. and they flourished

  292. and God blessed them

  293. in so many ways.

  294. God had given

  295. his vine as they were,

  296. his people,

  297. all of his goodness

  298. in which to grow.

  299. He had blessed them

  300. in so many ways.

  301. He had given them

  302. his word.

  303. He had given them

  304. his protection.

  305. And he had done

  306. all of these things

  307. for them.

  308. God had been good

  309. to them.

  310. As Isaiah 5,

    Isaiah 5:4

  311. verse 4 said,

  312. what could have been

  313. done more to my vineyard

  314. that I have not done

  315. in it?

  316. He had done everything

  317. for them.

  318. Time and time again

  319. the Lord has been

  320. good to them.

  321. But what did they do?

  322. They rejected him.

  323. And what of us today?

  324. When we think of

  325. what God has done

  326. for us,

  327. can we not say today,

  328. God has been good

  329. to us?

  330. God has been good

  331. to me.

  332. Can you say that

  333. this evening?

  334. As God's word

  335. is speaking to you,

  336. reminding you

  337. in your heart

  338. of your sin.

  339. And yet we read

  340. of a saviour.

  341. Can you not say,

  342. well, God has been

  343. good to me.

  344. God has showed

  345. his favour

  346. towards me.

  347. There is no

  348. question that

  349. everyone here

  350. who has come

  351. to trust

  352. in the Lord

  353. Jesus Christ

  354. cannot confess

  355. that God

  356. has been good.

  357. we are not

  358. the Israel

  359. that he is

  360. speaking about

  361. here.

  362. We are not

  363. those who are

  364. in bondage

  365. in Egypt.

  366. But we are

  367. in bondage

  368. in sin.

  369. We are lost

  370. in our sin.

  371. But God

  372. by his mercy

  373. takes us

  374. out of that sin.

  375. As Psalm 40

  376. speaks about

  377. waiting on the Lord

  378. and has been

  379. brought up

  380. out of that pit

  381. the mighty

  382. clean,

  383. our feet

  384. set on the rock.

  385. that is what

  386. the goodness

  387. of God

  388. does for us.

  389. Takes us

  390. from darkness

  391. to light.

  392. Has God

  393. been good

  394. to you?

  395. If you are

  396. a believer

  397. you can say it.

  398. God has been

  399. good.

  400. But maybe

  401. you are seeking

  402. after God.

  403. Can you not

  404. say that God

  405. has been good

  406. to you as well?

  407. God has given

  408. you an opportunity.

  409. God has given

  410. you this time.

  411. God has given

  412. you his work.

  413. God has heard

  414. our prayers

  415. in so many ways.

  416. God has given

  417. us his grace

  418. in so many

  419. different ways

  420. day by day.

  421. God has been

  422. good.

  423. The psalmist

  424. in Psalm 116

  425. in the Sing

  426. Psalms version

  427. it puts it like

  428. this,

  429. rest oh my soul

  430. God has been

  431. good to you.

  432. That is where

  433. we find rest.

  434. God was good

  435. to these leaders

  436. but what did

  437. they do?

  438. They rejected

  439. him.

  440. They questioned

  441. his authority.

  442. They sought

  443. to arrest

  444. him.

  445. They sought

  446. to crucify

  447. him.

  448. But what

  449. about us?

  450. What do we do

  451. with this

  452. goodness

  453. of God?

  454. Do we give

  455. thanks to him?

  456. Do we rejoice

  457. in it or do we

  458. just push it

  459. back in his face

  460. and say not

  461. for us?

  462. God has been

  463. good.

  464. But so many

  465. reject God

  466. today.

  467. Let us not

  468. be found

  469. as those

  470. who reject

  471. or shun

  472. God

  473. or turn

  474. away from

  475. him

  476. but give

  477. thanks to

  478. him

  479. and receive

  480. his goodness

  481. and praise

  482. him for all

  483. his grace

  484. and love

  485. towards us.

  486. the goodness

  487. of God.

  488. We see it

  489. here among

  490. them,

  491. rejected by

  492. them.

  493. Let us

  494. receive

  495. that goodness.

  496. The second

  497. thing we see

  498. here is just

  499. that grace

  500. of God.

  501. He's giving

  502. them something

  503. that they

  504. don't deserve

  505. and they just

  506. throw it back

  507. in his face.

  508. And we see

  509. that in how

  510. the master

  511. has given

  512. them this

  513. vineyard.

  514. He's done

  515. everything for

  516. them,

  517. prepared it

  518. for them.

  519. And then

  520. in verse 2

  521. it says,

  522. when the

  523. season came

  524. he sent

  525. a servant

  526. to the

  527. tenants

  528. to get

  529. from them

  530. some of

  531. the fruit

  532. of the

  533. vineyard.

  534. Some

  535. of the

  536. fruit

  537. of the

  538. vineyard.

  539. The owner

  540. would send

  541. his servants

  542. to gather

  543. what was

  544. due to

  545. him.

  546. some

  547. of the

  548. fruit

  549. of the

  550. vineyard

  551. as it

  552. says in

  553. verse 2.

  554. The owner

  555. normally would

  556. take about

  557. a third

  558. or a half

  559. for himself.

  560. Everything

  561. else

  562. would go

  563. to those

  564. who attended

  565. it.

  566. To the

  567. farmers,

  568. to the

  569. tenants

  570. who had

  571. been leased

  572. it.

  573. They would

  574. get the

  575. rest.

  576. they paid

  577. nothing

  578. for it.

  579. They

  580. tended it

  581. for a

  582. time and

  583. they bore

  584. the fruit.

  585. You would

  586. think,

  587. well,

  588. they would

  589. be delighted

  590. with that.

  591. They would

  592. be made

  593. up with

  594. that.

  595. They would

  596. receive

  597. their

  598. reward.

  599. But yet

  600. what we

  601. see is

  602. when the

  603. servants

  604. arrive,

  605. the tenants,

  606. what do

  607. they do?

  608. They turn

  609. against them

  610. time and

  611. time

  612. again.

  613. So the

  614. first servant

  615. arrives in

  616. verse 3

  617. and they

  618. took him

  619. and beat

  620. him and

  621. sent him

  622. away empty

  623. handed.

  624. Verse 4,

  625. again he

  626. sent them

  627. another servant

  628. and they

  629. struck him

  630. on the

  631. head and

  632. treated him

  633. shamefully.

  634. And again

  635. and again we

  636. see it going

  637. on here.

  638. They killed

  639. some,

  640. they beat

  641. others,

  642. sent them

  643. all away

  644. empty

  645. handed.

  646. God is

  647. showing

  648. his grace

  649. here towards

  650. them,

  651. giving them

  652. opportunity

  653. after opportunity

  654. and yet

  655. they still

  656. cannot see

  657. the goodness

  658. of God

  659. or the

  660. grace

  661. of God.

  662. And what

  663. is he saying

  664. to the

  665. leaders here?

  666. Well all

  667. of these

  668. servants

  669. that are

  670. sent back

  671. to the

  672. tenants,

  673. he is

  674. saying,

  675. these are

  676. the prophets.

  677. These are

  678. the ones

  679. who have

  680. spoken

  681. down

  682. through

  683. all the

  684. generations

  685. and what

  686. did you

  687. do with

  688. them?

  689. The ones

  690. who brought

  691. you my

  692. word,

  693. you beat

  694. them,

  695. you killed

  696. them,

  697. you sent

  698. them away.

  699. You see

  700. this when

  701. you go to

  702. the book

  703. of Hebrews

  704. in chapter

  705. one.

  706. Long ago

  707. at many

  708. times and

  709. in many

  710. ways,

  711. God spoke

  712. to our

  713. fathers by

  714. the prophets.

  715. So right

  716. through the

  717. generations,

  718. God was

  719. speaking.

  720. And yet

  721. they rejected,

  722. rejected,

  723. rejected.

  724. And then

  725. finally,

  726. the landowner

  727. sees one

  728. more option.

  729. In verse

  730. six,

  731. he had

  732. still one

  733. other,

  734. a beloved

  735. son.

  736. Finally,

  737. he sent

  738. him to

  739. them saying,

  740. they will

  741. respect my

  742. son.

  743. Surely,

  744. this will be

  745. the answer.

  746. I will send

  747. my son.

  748. And again,

  749. you go back

  750. to Hebrews

  751. chapter one.

  752. God spoke

  753. to our

  754. fathers through

  755. the prophets,

  756. but in

  757. these last

  758. days,

  759. he has

  760. spoken to

  761. us by

  762. his son,

  763. whom he

  764. appointed

  765. heir of

  766. all things.

  767. So we're

  768. seeing here,

  769. this is the

  770. master sending

  771. his son.

  772. This is God

  773. sending Jesus

  774. Christ into

  775. the world.

  776. Surely,

  777. they will

  778. receive him.

  779. But what

  780. do they

  781. do?

  782. What do

  783. they do

  784. with him?

  785. Well,

  786. they see

  787. an opportunity

  788. for themselves.

  789. In verse

  790. seven,

  791. but those

  792. tenants said

  793. to one

  794. another,

  795. this is

  796. the heir,

  797. come,

  798. let us

  799. kill him

  800. and the

  801. inheritance

  802. will be

  803. ours.

  804. And they

  805. took him

  806. and killed

  807. him and

  808. threw him

  809. out of

  810. the vineyard.

  811. This is

  812. what they

  813. did with

  814. him.

  815. they

  816. thought that

  817. by killing

  818. the son,

  819. they could

  820. have

  821. everything

  822. for

  823. themselves.

  824. They

  825. could not

  826. stand

  827. the thought

  828. of this

  829. Jesus

  830. having

  831. authority

  832. over them.

  833. So they

  834. are looking

  835. for ways

  836. to kill

  837. him.

  838. And yet

  839. what grace

  840. God

  841. shows.

  842. Grace

  843. that they

  844. don't

  845. deserve.

  846. The

  847. blessings

  848. that they

  849. have received

  850. again

  851. and

  852. again.

  853. But there

  854. is a

  855. warning.

  856. What will

  857. the owner

  858. do?

  859. What will

  860. the owner

  861. of the

  862. vineyard

  863. do?

  864. In verse

  865. 9,

  866. he will

  867. come

  868. and destroy

  869. the tenants.

  870. What a

  871. warning

  872. that is

  873. there.

  874. What will

  875. we do

  876. with this

  877. grace

  878. of God

  879. ourselves?

  880. God

  881. has shown

  882. us grace.

  883. He

  884. has given

  885. us

  886. his

  887. word

  888. through

  889. the

  890. prophets

  891. as we

  892. have

  893. them.

  894. He

  895. has

  896. spoken

  897. to

  898. us

  899. through

  900. his

  901. son,

  902. the

  903. Lord

  904. Jesus

  905. Christ.

  906. But how

  907. do we

  908. receive

  909. that

  910. word?

  911. Do we

  912. receive it

  913. with gladness

  914. or do we

  915. reject it?

  916. Do we

  917. shun it

  918. and turn

  919. away from

  920. it?

  921. Do we

  922. have that

  923. attitude

  924. where if

  925. we can

  926. just get

  927. rid

  928. of this

  929. son,

  930. we will

  931. have

  932. everything

  933. for

  934. ourselves?

  935. As one

  936. commentator

  937. put it,

  938. this is

  939. the way

  940. that humanity

  941. sees it.

  942. If humanity

  943. can dispense

  944. with God

  945. or even

  946. kill God,

  947. then humanity

  948. can become

  949. God.

  950. It's not a

  951. reminder of

  952. the kind of

  953. hearts which

  954. we have.

  955. The hearts

  956. that are

  957. apart from

  958. the grace

  959. of God

  960. want to

  961. be God

  962. ourselves.

  963. If we

  964. can dispense

  965. with God

  966. or even

  967. kill God,

  968. we can

  969. become

  970. God.

  971. But we

  972. cannot.

  973. What they

  974. failed to

  975. understand

  976. was the

  977. grace that

  978. was on

  979. offer here,

  980. that they

  981. could have

  982. everything if

  983. they would

  984. just receive

  985. the son.

  986. But they

  987. failed to

  988. understand.

  989. Receive

  990. the son,

  991. the vineyard

  992. and it's

  993. all there

  994. for you.

  995. Receive

  996. the son

  997. as God

  998. goes on

  999. to speak

  1000. to us

  1001. through the

  1002. word and

  1003. you will

  1004. become a

  1005. child of

  1006. God.

  1007. Receive

  1008. the son

  1009. and you

  1010. become an

  1011. heir alongside

  1012. him.

  1013. Receive

  1014. the son

  1015. and you

  1016. have all

  1017. the blessings

  1018. that heaven

  1019. has to

  1020. offer.

  1021. But they

  1022. killed him.

  1023. What about

  1024. you?

  1025. What do you

  1026. do with

  1027. the son

  1028. who was

  1029. sent?

  1030. Do you

  1031. receive him

  1032. and all

  1033. the blessings

  1034. that are

  1035. offered

  1036. through him

  1037. or do

  1038. you kill

  1039. him?

  1040. God's

  1041. grace and

  1042. love is

  1043. immense

  1044. towards us

  1045. through his

  1046. son Jesus

  1047. Christ but

  1048. yet we

  1049. live in a

  1050. world that

  1051. says no

  1052. again and

  1053. again and

  1054. again.

  1055. Will you

  1056. receive this

  1057. word with

  1058. joy or

  1059. will you

  1060. burn in

  1061. anger

  1062. against it?

  1063. That's the

  1064. choices that

  1065. are so

  1066. often put

  1067. before us.

  1068. But we

  1069. are warned

  1070. again and

  1071. again and

  1072. that's what we

  1073. see finally

  1074. here because

  1075. there's an

  1076. ultimate

  1077. warning.

  1078. You go

  1079. on rejecting

  1080. the grace

  1081. of God

  1082. and there

  1083. are consequences.

  1084. Verse 9

  1085. What will

  1086. the owner

  1087. of the

  1088. vineyard

  1089. do?

  1090. He will

  1091. come and

  1092. destroy the

  1093. tenants and

  1094. give the

  1095. vineyard to

  1096. others.

  1097. Jesus was

  1098. God's final

  1099. messenger and

  1100. if they

  1101. rejected him

  1102. they were

  1103. saying no to

  1104. God for the

  1105. very last

  1106. time.

  1107. It's a

  1108. frightening

  1109. thought that

  1110. for us that

  1111. we could say

  1112. no to

  1113. God one

  1114. last time

  1115. but yet

  1116. God still

  1117. speaks.

  1118. The religious

  1119. leaders killed

  1120. the Son of

  1121. God on

  1122. the cross

  1123. at Calvary.

  1124. They thought

  1125. that they

  1126. would get

  1127. rid of

  1128. him and

  1129. get everything

  1130. all authority

  1131. and everything

  1132. else for

  1133. themselves

  1134. but they

  1135. would end

  1136. up with

  1137. nothing.

  1138. The

  1139. Master would

  1140. come and

  1141. destroy the

  1142. tenants.

  1143. They will

  1144. be cast

  1145. out and

  1146. others will

  1147. receive.

  1148. That is

  1149. the same

  1150. for us.

  1151. You

  1152. reject the

  1153. Son.

  1154. You throw

  1155. him away

  1156. but others

  1157. will receive.

  1158. Reject the

  1159. authority of

  1160. Jesus.

  1161. Reject the

  1162. salvation that

  1163. is offered

  1164. through him

  1165. and there is

  1166. only judgment

  1167. and destruction

  1168. for you.

  1169. But how

  1170. shall we

  1171. respond to

  1172. the word

  1173. of God?

  1174. Again you

  1175. go back to

  1176. Hebrews

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  1177. chapter 2.

  1178. It's there

  1179. the warnings

  1180. are there for

  1181. us how God

  1182. has spoken

  1183. through his

  1184. Son.

  1185. But the

  1186. beginning of

  1187. chapter 2

  1188. therefore we

  1189. must pay much

  1190. closer attention

  1191. to what we

  1192. have heard

  1193. lest we

  1194. drift away

  1195. from it.

  1196. For since

  1197. the message

  1198. was declared

  1199. by angels

  1200. proved to be

  1201. reliable and

  1202. every transgression

  1203. and disobedience

  1204. received a

  1205. just retribution

  1206. how shall

  1207. we escape

  1208. if we

  1209. neglect such

  1210. a great

  1211. salvation?

  1212. Isn't that a

  1213. stark warning

  1214. for us?

  1215. Pay closer

  1216. attention to

  1217. what we have

  1218. heard lest we

  1219. drift away

  1220. from it.

  1221. How shall

  1222. we escape

  1223. if we

  1224. neglect such

  1225. a great

  1226. salvation?

  1227. We

  1228. won't.

  1229. We can't.

  1230. But the

  1231. salvation is

  1232. there on

  1233. offer to

  1234. us and

  1235. that's what's

  1236. summed up

  1237. by verse

  1238. 10.

  1239. Have you

  1240. not read

  1241. this scripture?

  1242. The stone

  1243. that the

  1244. builders

  1245. rejected

  1246. has become

  1247. the corner

  1248. stone.

  1249. The Lord

  1250. this was the

  1251. Lord's doing

  1252. and it is

  1253. marvelous

  1254. in our

  1255. eyes.

  1256. Quoting

  1257. from Psalm

  1258. 118.

  1259. The one

  1260. who was

  1261. rejected

  1262. has become

  1263. the

  1264. corner

  1265. stone.

  1266. Is it

  1267. your

  1268. corner

  1269. stone?

  1270. It was

  1271. the Lord's

  1272. doing.

  1273. Is it

  1274. marvelous

  1275. in your

  1276. eyes?

  1277. Do you

  1278. rejoice

  1279. in that?

  1280. That God

  1281. sent his

  1282. beloved

  1283. son.

  1284. That whoever

  1285. believes in

  1286. him will

  1287. not perish

  1288. but have

  1289. everlasting

  1290. life.

  1291. The word

  1292. of God

  1293. speaks to

  1294. our hearts.

  1295. The response

  1296. of these

  1297. religious leaders

  1298. of the day

  1299. was to have

  1300. him arrested

  1301. to cast

  1302. him away.

  1303. But what

  1304. is yours?

  1305. How do

  1306. you respond

  1307. to the

  1308. word of

  1309. God?

  1310. How will

  1311. you escape

  1312. if you

  1313. reject such

  1314. a great

  1315. salvation?

  1316. It was

  1317. Martin

  1318. Luther who

  1319. once put it

  1320. like this,

  1321. the life

  1322. of

  1323. Christianity

  1324. consists

  1325. of

  1326. possessive

  1327. nouns.

  1328. It is

  1329. one thing

  1330. to say

  1331. Christ

  1332. is our

  1333. Savior.

  1334. It is

  1335. quite another

  1336. thing to

  1337. say he

  1338. is my

  1339. Savior

  1340. and my

  1341. Lord.

  1342. The devil

  1343. can say

  1344. the first

  1345. he said.

  1346. The true

  1347. Christian

  1348. alone

  1349. can say

  1350. the second.

  1351. So who

  1352. is this

  1353. Christ?

  1354. Is he

  1355. just

  1356. our

  1357. Savior?

  1358. Or can

  1359. you say

  1360. he is

  1361. my

  1362. Savior?

  1363. If we

  1364. are able

  1365. to say

  1366. he is

  1367. my

  1368. Savior,

  1369. then we

  1370. can face

  1371. up to

  1372. that

  1373. judgment

  1374. when the

  1375. master,

  1376. the owner

  1377. returns.

  1378. And we

  1379. will not

  1380. be cast

  1381. away.

  1382. Because when

  1383. we come

  1384. to trust

  1385. in the

  1386. Lord Jesus

  1387. Christ,

  1388. to know

  1389. his love

  1390. and his

  1391. grace,

  1392. then we

  1393. are saved

  1394. through

  1395. him.

  1396. And as

  1397. Jesus

  1398. says in

  1399. Matthew's

  1400. gospel,

  1401. on that

  1402. day of

  1403. judgment,

  1404. there will

  1405. be those

  1406. who will

  1407. be cast

  1408. away,

  1409. who he

  1410. says,

  1411. I knew

  1412. you not.

  1413. That is

  1414. the outcome

  1415. for those

  1416. who reject

  1417. his son.

  1418. But for

  1419. those who

  1420. receive,

  1421. for those

  1422. who believe

  1423. in him,

  1424. Jesus says,

  1425. then the

  1426. king will

  1427. say to

  1428. those on

  1429. his right,

  1430. come,

  1431. you who

  1432. are blessed

  1433. by my

  1434. father,

  1435. take your

  1436. inheritance,

  1437. the kingdom

  1438. prepared for

  1439. you since

  1440. the creation

  1441. of the

  1442. world.

  1443. The king

  1444. has won.

  1445. He is on

  1446. his throne

  1447. and he

  1448. will come

  1449. again.

  1450. But what

  1451. we receive

  1452. depends on

  1453. what we do

  1454. with him

  1455. now.

  1456. Do we

  1457. receive him

  1458. with gladness

  1459. or do

  1460. our hearts

  1461. burn in

  1462. anger

  1463. against him?

  1464. He has

  1465. shown us

  1466. love.

  1467. He has

  1468. shown us

  1469. his goodness.

  1470. He has

  1471. shown us

  1472. his grace.

  1473. There is

  1474. nothing more

  1475. that he

  1476. could have

  1477. done for

  1478. his vineyard.

  1479. It's

  1480. what we

  1481. do with

  1482. him.

  1483. Do we

  1484. receive him

  1485. or do we

  1486. reject him?

  1487. May God

  1488. help us

  1489. to find

  1490. a refuge

  1491. in him

  1492. so that

  1493. when he

  1494. returns

  1495. he will

  1496. call us

  1497. by saying

  1498. come

  1499. you who

  1500. are blessed

  1501. by my

  1502. father.

  1503. Let us

  1504. pray.

  1505. Lord our

  1506. gracious God

  1507. we do

  1508. thank you

  1509. that your

  1510. word is

  1511. complete,

  1512. that your

  1513. word stands

  1514. firm and

  1515. sure,

  1516. that it

  1517. has all

  1518. authority

  1519. for us

  1520. and reminds

  1521. us of

  1522. our sin

  1523. and yet

  1524. your grace.

  1525. And we

  1526. thank you

  1527. Lord that

  1528. your word

  1529. speaks into

  1530. our hearts.

  1531. And we

  1532. pray today for

  1533. that word

  1534. to be received

  1535. in our hearts,

  1536. not with a

  1537. burning anger

  1538. that shuns

  1539. you and

  1540. turns away

  1541. from you,

  1542. but recognizing

  1543. our need

  1544. of you.

  1545. And thankful

  1546. for your

  1547. goodness to

  1548. us and

  1549. your grace

  1550. towards us.

  1551. Lord,

  1552. continue to

  1553. speak,

  1554. guiding us

  1555. and helping

  1556. us and

  1557. forgiving our

  1558. sins in

  1559. Jesus' name.

  1560. Amen.

  1561. We're going

  1562. to conclude

  1563. by singing

  1564. to God's

  1565. praise these

  1566. words in

  1567. Psalm 118,

  1568. the Sing

  1569. Psalms version,

  1570. page 156,

  1571. Psalm 118,

    Psalms 118:21

  1572. verse 21

  1573. to verse 26.

  1574. You answered

  1575. me, I'll

  1576. give you

  1577. thanks.

  1578. Salvation

  1579. comes from

  1580. you alone.

  1581. The stone

  1582. the builders

  1583. had refused

  1584. has now

  1585. become the

  1586. cornerstone.

  1587. The Lord

  1588. himself has

  1589. done all

  1590. this.

  1591. It is a

  1592. marvel in

  1593. our sight.

  1594. This is

  1595. the day

  1596. the Lord

  1597. has made

  1598. in it.

  1599. Let us

  1600. take great

  1601. delight.

  1602. We'll sing

  1603. from verse

  1604. 21 to

  1605. 26.

  1606. The tune

  1607. is Old

  1608. 100th and

  1609. we stand

  1610. to sing.

  1611. You

  1612. answered

  1613. me,

  1614. I will

  1615. give

  1616. thanks.

  1617. Salvation

  1618. as now

  1619. stone.

  1620. The

  1621. Lord himself

  1622. has done

  1623. all this.

  1624. It is

  1625. a marvel

  1626. in

  1627. our sight.

  1628. This

  1629. is the day

  1630. the Lord

  1631. has made.

  1632. And

  1633. let us

  1634. take great

  1635. delight.

  1636. Save

  1637. us, O Lord,

  1638. we humbly

  1639. pray.

  1640. O

  1641. Lord, we

  1642. pray, grant

  1643. us success.

  1644. His

  1645. blessing

  1646. is blessed

  1647. who comes

  1648. in God's

  1649. great name.

  1650. You

  1651. from the

  1652. Lord's

  1653. house

  1654. we

  1655. will

  1656. bless.

  1657. Amen.

  1658. After the

  1659. benediction,

  1660. I'll go to the

  1661. door to my

  1662. right.

  1663. We'll close

  1664. with a

  1665. benediction.

  1666. May grace,

  1667. mercy, and

  1668. peace from

  1669. God,

  1670. Father,

  1671. Son, and

  1672. Holy Spirit

  1673. rest upon

  1674. and abide

  1675. with you

  1676. all now

  1677. and forever

  1678. more.

  1679. Amen.

  1680. God

  1681. Thank you.
