  1. Please turn in your Bibles to Luke chapter 23 this morning and to words that we find in verse 34.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  2. ! Luke chapter 23 verse 34.

    Luke 23:34

  3. A few years ago there was an 18 year old young man called Brant Jean who was in the witness box at the trial of the individual who murdered his brother.

  4. The woman was a lady called Amber Geigor. She was an ex-police woman and she found Brant's brother in what she thought was her flat and she shot him dead.

  5. He was actually in his own flat and for whatever reason that they couldn't quite ascertain she had been so disorientated she thought that he was in her flat and she shot him dead.

  6. It was what Brant Jean did during his time on the witness stand that means we have heard about his actions.

  7. So in the witness books he addressed directly this young woman whose life was now forever going to be changed for what she did.

  8. And he addressed her with regard to wanting the very best for her.

  9. And knowing that his murdered brother would want the very best for her.

  10. He explained to her that the very best for her would be to know Jesus Christ as her own personal saviour.

  11. Now this was highly unusual as he explained what was taking place but he then turned to the judge and he asked the judge for permission to come out of the witness box and to go and hug the accused to show that he really had forgiven her for murdering his brother.

  12. And the judge agreed and so Brant Jean went and he hugged this accused young woman and it was the image of him hugging her as a sign of his forgiveness toward her that was being around the US and actually around the world.

  13. And so when we live in a culture where we have this clamour to cancel people.

  14. Where we want people punished.

  15. We want people sidelined.

  16. We want people to pay the penalty for the wrongs that they've done.

  17. Because in our generation there always has to be somebody who has to pay the price isn't there.

  18. But in such a culture it's quite remarkable just how genuine forgiveness shines out.

  19. Now I don't know how you react to hearing a story about that.

  20. In one sense it's lovely to hear.

  21. It's remarkable.

  22. But if you try and put yourself as I try and put myself into the shoes of this young man Brant Jean.

  23. I wonder how we would react if somebody had done something barbaric to our family.

  24. Humanly speaking there's absolutely no chance that I would behave in the way he had behaved.

  25. Because if it's one of my loved ones then every instinct is to somehow seek revenge.

  26. Humanly speaking there's no chance.

  27. But spiritually speaking there is.

  28. Because spiritually speaking when we have a living connection with Jesus Christ.

  29. Then the way in which our lives are transformed by that means that we have a very different relationship with wrongdoing.

  30. And a very different relationship with forgiveness.

  31. So when this young 18 year old man was talking about her deepest need and her need to connect with Jesus.

  32. And how he wanted to show his forgiveness offer.

  33. Perhaps he had in mind the words of Jesus in Luke chapter 6.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  34. When Jesus says but love your enemies and to good to them and lend from them.

  35. Maybe he had in mind the teaching of Jesus.

  36. Maybe he had in mind however the example of Jesus that we find here.

  37. Because the example of Jesus in this episode is that Jesus himself is on the receiving end of barbaric treatment.

  38. By this stage of verse 34.

  39. Jesus is his body is processing the impact of these large iron nails being hammered through his wrists and his feet.

  40. Severing the nerves and all of the pain signals that are going from different parts of his body.

  41. And flooding to his brain so that his brain realizes what's taking place.

  42. He's in the middle of beginning to endure some of the physical torture that crucifixion involves.

  43. Not simply is it that his nerves will have been torn to shreds through these nails that were used.

  44. But then he's now feeling the impact of gravity.

  45. Gravity that he himself called into existence.

  46. As it pulls down upon his joints and muscles.

  47. Potentially dislocating some of them as he tries to push himself up and push himself out to somehow be able to breathe.

  48. Jesus is here.

  49. The one who was present at the very dawn of time.

  50. The one who's the power of whose word actually put into existence all that we can see and hear and feel and touch and smell.

  51. He is the one on the end of this horrendous treatment.

  52. If there was ever in one sense an injustice perpetrated in this world it was on this occasion.

  53. And so what does Jesus do?

  54. He asks his heavenly father to forgive those soldiers who are doing their job and the others implicated.

  55. Because they don't appreciate what they've done.

  56. Father forgive them.

  57. And so this morning I want us to pause over these words.

  58. And to hopefully have our own souls warmed as we think of the forgiveness that is available for us through Jesus Christ and all that he has done.

  59. Those of you who enjoy novels or drama series or whatever movies will know that there is one.

  60. There's a standard technique amongst many techniques that the scriptwriters have.

  61. About placing characters in circumstances that really doesn't fit for them.

  62. So it tends to go in one of two ways.

  63. Either you have the spoiled rich kid who is put into a situation where they have to slum it with the underclass.

  64. Or the opposite.

  65. You've got the hardened tough nut who is now mixing it with the rich and the powerful and influential.

  66. And at some point within the plot, usually reasonably near the start, the words,

  67. You don't belong here, are communicated.

  68. Now Jesus was in neither of these categories.

  69. But there was a very real sense in which he did not belong in this scene that we have just read about here at Calvary.

  70. The scene that was unfolding at Golgotha.

  71. He, in that one sense, he didn't belong in that environment.

  72. Now I see this because we have possibly sanitized what Golgotha, what Calvary was actually like.

  73. But if we actually were on the ground in that era, then it would be the type of place that we really would have to prepare to enter.

  74. It would be the type of place that we would have to get ready for the sights and the sounds and the smells of what was going to be evident.

  75. Because it genuinely was grotesque.

  76. If this had been made into a movie, the British Board of Film Control would be struggling to get a proper rating for this movie.

  77. Because an 18 rating wouldn't be enough because some of the sights that would be seen.

  78. The sights of the brutality of the crucifixion process.

  79. The sights of nakedness.

  80. The sights of shame.

  81. But more than that, it wouldn't simply be the sights that would be placing the events that would unfold at Calvary into a category all of its own.

  82. It would even be the sounds.

  83. The sounds of what was taking place.

  84. The sounds of screams.

  85. Of sobbing.

  86. Of groaning.

  87. Of the abuse that would be thrown at those being crucified by passers-by.

  88. The sights were graphic.

  89. The sounds would be haunting.

  90. And the smells.

  91. Well, the smells would be just catching in your throat.

  92. It would be the type of place that you would be holding your breath.

  93. You'd be breathing out your mouth rather than out your nose.

  94. Because you don't want to inhale the noxious smell.

  95. It's a place where there's constant burning taking place.

  96. Where the refuge of the city is being burnt.

  97. But on top of that, you've got human remains that are being burnt within that also.

  98. Because frequently those who had been crucified, once parts of them had been eaten by vultures, the rest is just thrown into gaps.

  99. And then eventually it's going to be burned.

  100. And so you think if there is ever a location that the Lord of glory ought not to be in, it is in that location.

  101. We could turn around and say to Jesus, you really don't belong here.

  102. And I want to contrast that image as it is portrayed for us in our minds with how very different it was at the start of the world.

  103. I want to contrast just the grotesque brutality and awful horror of what takes place at Calvary.

  104. With what we imagine from what the Bible teaches us, the Garden of Eden to be.

  105. A place that would be so lush.

  106. A place that would be so beautiful.

  107. The variety of colour.

  108. The aroma coming from the various different flowers and fauna, whatever else would be there.

  109. The place where the Lord God would walk in the cool of the day with the pinnacle of his creative work.

  110. The place that is ultimately the place that we've been longing for ever since.

  111. But that place of beauty, that place of delight, that place of rest.

  112. That place of being in the very near, close presence of God.

  113. And can you contrast anything greater than the place of the skull?

  114. The very mention.

  115. The place of the skull.

  116. It implies that connection, does it not, with the curse that sin has brought into this very world.

  117. And the place of the skull is contrasted with the place of beauty that God created for humanity to inhabit.

  118. And to enjoy.

  119. And to enjoy him.

  120. And so where the Lord God once walked in the cool of the day.

  121. Here you have the Lord of glory.

  122. And he's now barely able to walk.

  123. Isn't that what the passage says to us in verse 29?

  124. That they compelled Simon to help carry the cross behind Jesus.

  125. It had been an evening whereby Jesus would have had little, if any, sleep.

  126. It would have been an evening whereby he would have had little, if any, food.

  127. Following the first Lord's Supper that he inaugurated, instituted with his disciples that evening.

  128. It had been, in the intervening hours, he had been beaten.

  129. He had been flogged.

  130. And sometimes we read that and we forget just how brutal even that was.

  131. Flogging used to have leather ropes.

  132. And it used to have bits of bone.

  133. And other sharp objects in it.

  134. And it would go diagonally across the back of the person being flogged.

  135. And the bits would dig into their skin.

  136. And then it would be yanked.

  137. So that the skin would be ripped.

  138. And it would go over one side and then diagonally the other side.

  139. And it would keep going.

  140. And it's recorded in Roman history that many, many people died from being flogged alone.

  141. So here you have the Savior.

  142. He's had no sleep.

  143. He's had minimal nourishment.

  144. He has had abuse.

  145. He has been flogged.

  146. And now he's been asked to carry this piece of wood upon which he himself is going to be impaled.

  147. And his strength is almost non-existent.

  148. And so he is the Lord of Glory.

  149. The one who would have walked in the cool of the day.

  150. As the Lord God walked in the cool of the day with Adam and Eve.

  151. Here you have the Lord of Glory now stumbling.

  152. But his alertness is not in question, however.

  153. We note that from the intervening section from verse 27 onwards.

  154. As he turns and he addresses those almost professional mourners who had gathered.

  155. And who were expressing their sorrow over what was unfolding.

  156. Realizing these men were being led off to their graves.

  157. And Jesus turns and he speaks to them and he tells them not to weep for him.

  158. He speaks to them that if this can happen to somebody who's innocent like him, what may happen in a day for those who are not so innocent.

  159. And so he is very aware of the people who are there.

  160. And then even as his hands are held down and his feet are held down and as he is then manhandled and hoisted vertical.

  161. He is alert enough to utter these words.

  162. Father, forgive them.

  163. For they don't know what they do.

  164. Well, let's press in a little deeper.

  165. And think about this prayer itself.

  166. And I want us to notice two or three things.

  167. I want to notice first of all to whom he prays.

  168. The Lord Jesus says, Father.

  169. Here at the start of his time upon the cross.

  170. Our Savior is very much aware of that father-son relationship.

  171. That bond.

  172. That presence.

  173. That has accompanied him through his ministry.

  174. On multiple occasions he spoke about his father being with him.

  175. And him seeking to do his father's will.

  176. And him saying the words that the father has given him to say.

  177. And him reminding people that he's not alone.

  178. That the father is with him.

  179. Here he is at the start of his time on the cross.

  180. And he is aware that the father-son relationship.

  181. That he has so prized and has been so precious to him.

  182. That that is still in existence.

  183. There's going to come a point.

  184. In a number of hours time.

  185. And even that itself.

  186. As we see a number of hours.

  187. I think there's only been once or twice in my life.

  188. That have known you know real acute horrendous pain.

  189. And if you've been in such a situation.

  190. That every second.

  191. As you wait for pain relief to kick in.

  192. Every second.

  193. Seems far far longer.

  194. And here we have.

  195. In a number of hours time.

  196. Jesus is going to reach that place.

  197. Where he's not going to be alert.

  198. To the comforting presence.

  199. Of the father who has accompanied him.

  200. Through his ministry.

  201. He's going to cry out.

  202. My God.

  203. My God.

  204. Why have you forsaken me?

  205. Because it's almost as if this cloud has enveloped his soul.

  206. In a similar way to the darkness that has enveloped his body at Calvary.

  207. Where that darkness.

  208. Wrapped that scene.

  209. For these three hours.

  210. It's almost as if there is this cloud that has enveloped the Lord's soul.

  211. Because he's calling out.

  212. Because he doesn't sense the felt presence of his father with him.

  213. And he cries out.

  214. And he cries out.

  215. My God.

  216. My God.

  217. Why have you forsaken me?

  218. The one individual who has never experienced a distance.

  219. From his father.

  220. Is now sensing that there is a distance.

  221. You see.

  222. For you and I.

  223. Being at a distance from God.

  224. Is almost our default natural position.

  225. It's not something that we had to necessarily work at.

  226. It's what we are as humans.

  227. We're at a distance.

  228. Through our sin.

  229. By nature and by practice.

  230. But not the Lord.

  231. Not the Lord at all.

  232. And so if there was anybody less prepared.

  233. To be.

  234. To sense himself at a distance from his father.

  235. It was the Lord Jesus Christ.

  236. And of course by the time he.

  237. He's coming towards the end of his time on the cross.

  238. We see that once again.

  239. He's back.

  240. Thinking in terms of his father.

  241. So at the start of his.

  242. Of the time on the cross.

  243. And at the end of his time on the cross.

  244. At the start.

  245. He says father forgive.

  246. And at the end he's saying father receive.

  247. And so at the start.

  248. And at the end he's conscious of his father's presence.

  249. But as he plumbed the very depths.

  250. He's not.

  251. And so we remind ourselves.

  252. That that sense of utter forsakenness.

  253. Was not constant.

  254. Through the time.

  255. That our savior was on the cross.

  256. But that there was that.

  257. That.

  258. That time of.

  259. Of where this cry of dereliction.

  260. This cry of abandonment.

  261. Articulates that sense.

  262. Of being.

  263. That sense of being cut off.

  264. And then we look at that.

  265. And we.

  266. And we.

  267. We.

  268. We realize that actually we're connected.

  269. To what's taking place there.

  270. And we realize that.

  271. That I.

  272. That we.

  273. Caused.

  274. That.

  275. And so he is.

  276. At the start.

  277. Of.

  278. This.

  279. Time in the cross.

  280. He is conscious of his father.

  281. And.

  282. And he's coming to the father.

  283. With a prayer that.

  284. That in many ways.

  285. Would meet.

  286. A warm reception.

  287. In the heart of the father.

  288. Because.

  289. Jesus has.

  290. Has told us.

  291. We.

  292. We have it recorded for us.

  293. In John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  294. That.

  295. That God so loved the world.

  296. And the world.

  297. In John.

  298. Is.

  299. Is.

  300. The.

  301. The.

  302. The.

  303. The.

  304. The.

  305. The.

  306. Created order.

  307. And rebellion.

  308. And rejection of God.

  309. God so loved this.

  310. Rebellious.

  311. Rejecting world.

  312. That he.

  313. That he gave his one and only son.

  314. That whoever believes in him.

  315. And will not perish.

  316. But will have everlasting life.

  317. And so here you have.

  318. The son.

  319. Reflecting the heart of the father.

  320. Praying for those.

  321. Rebel.

  322. Those rebellious.

  323. Those rejecting.

  324. Those who are.

  325. Actually.

  326. Putting the Lord of glory himself.

  327. To death.

  328. And so the first.

  329. The first component.

  330. That we.

  331. That we.

  332. We highlight.

  333. With regard to this prayer.

  334. Is.

  335. To whom.

  336. He prays.

  337. He prays to the father.

  338. And then we notice.

  339. What he prays for.

  340. We notice what he prays for.

  341. He doesn't pray for rescue.

  342. He had mentioned to Peter.

  343. When Peter thought that it was time to.

  344. To somehow.

  345. Resort to.

  346. To physical violence.

  347. To secure Jesus's release.

  348. We learn that.

  349. That he is.

  350. That there were legions of angels.

  351. That he could have called on.

  352. To come and rescue him.

  353. That's.

  354. But he's not going to come.

  355. It's not going to call for rescue.

  356. It's not going to call for those to come to his aid.

  357. To help him.

  358. In his current plight.

  359. he's also not crying out for justice

  360. we're very quick to communicate to friends and families

  361. when we've been unfairly treated

  362. when things have been said about us that are not accurate

  363. when things are done to us that are grossly unfair

  364. we don't just sit back and absorb that

  365. we very much plead our case

  366. we very much try and make the injustice known

  367. we very much try and take control of the situation

  368. that's not what Jesus is doing

  369. he's not praying for rescue

  370. he is not praying for justice

  371. he is not praying for retribution

  372. you need to make them pay for what they're doing here

  373. you need to intervene

  374. this has to stop

  375. he doesn't pray for that

  376. instead he prays

  377. Father forgive them

  378. Father forgive them

  379. for they don't know what they're doing

  380. now Jesus' prayer

  381. for these soldiers to be forgiven

  382. we need to contrast his prayer for their forgiveness

  383. as we pray when we're seeking to forgive others

  384. because when we are struggling with forgiveness

  385. one of the things that gives a degree of clarity to us

  386. is the fact that we ourselves have sinned

  387. that we ourselves have not behaved in the way that we ought to have done

  388. that we ourselves have said and done and thought and acted in ways

  389. that have needed us to be forgiven by God

  390. and so it's on the basis that we have been forgiven

  391. that we then forgive others

  392. and so we forgive other people's debts

  393. as we have our own debts forgiven

  394. as Jesus makes that clear in the prayer he taught his disciples

  395. and so when we are seeking to forgive somebody else

  396. we're doing so

  397. and in fact we can probably only do so

  398. from the basis that we ourselves have been forgiven

  399. and been forgiven much worse

  400. but Jesus has never been forgiven has he

  401. he's never had to come before his heavenly father

  402. and acknowledge a word spoken inappropriately

  403. or an act done with the wrong motives

  404. or anything like that

  405. he's never had to come with any word of repentance

  406. there's never been a single stray sinful thought

  407. in the mind of our master

  408. not even for a nanosecond

  409. so when Jesus is coming and he's asking for their forgiveness

  410. he's coming in a different way

  411. in which we come and ask for forgiveness for others

  412. and ask for forgiveness for ourselves

  413. because he's never himself been forgiven

  414. there was never a moment of rebellion

  415. or rejection

  416. or going off on his own timeline or timetable

  417. because everything was lived in accordance

  418. with the will and purposes of his heavenly father

  419. and it's also worth noting

  420. when we think of what Jesus is praying for here

  421. that when he's praying for forgiveness

  422. he's asking the father to forgive

  423. and you may be correct in concluding

  424. but didn't Jesus himself declare people forgiven

  425. in other episodes within the gospel

  426. and if you're thinking along these lines

  427. you'd be correct

  428. you remember when the guy's mates took him to meet Jesus

  429. best thing you can do as a mate

  430. is to take your mates to meet Jesus

  431. well they carried this mate

  432. they carried him

  433. there's four of them carrying him

  434. they can't get in

  435. and so they're beginning to take the ceiling off this roof

  436. and they're going to lower this guy down

  437. and he's in front of Jesus

  438. and it's you know

  439. the commotion must have been quite something

  440. but he's in front of Jesus

  441. they're waiting

  442. what's Jesus going to say

  443. and Jesus says

  444. son your sins are forgiven

  445. he doesn't say father forgive his sins

  446. he says son your sins are forgiven

  447. and then there was another occasion

  448. when this woman is coming

  449. and she's wiping Jesus' feet

  450. with her tears and with her hair

  451. and Jesus is declaring her

  452. that her sins are forgiven

  453. and Jesus has said

  454. it's recorded for us in Matthew chapter 9

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  455. that the son of man has power to forgive sins

  456. so why is he not forgiving the soldiers

  457. directly at this point

  458. why is he asking the father to forgive

  459. because by this stage

  460. we have the saviour

  461. he has been lifted up

  462. from the earth

  463. he is now the one

  464. who is absorbing sin himself

  465. he is the one who has been designated

  466. as a sinner

  467. not because of anything he has by nature

  468. or by practice

  469. but for everything that we have

  470. by nature and by practice

  471. and so here he is upon the cross

  472. and so he is not declaring

  473. forgiveness for these soldiers

  474. because he as the one who has become sin

  475. is needing the father to forgive

  476. rather than him to forgive

  477. so we note to whom he prays

  478. he prays to the father

  479. at this point

  480. whose presence he is aware of

  481. and we note that what he prays for

  482. that it is not for rescue

  483. and it's not for justice

  484. or it's not for retribution

  485. but it is forgiveness

  486. and we notice that

  487. who it is that he is praying for

  488. forgive them

  489. for they know not what they are doing

  490. forgive them

  491. well the immediate context there

  492. is there's people who have crucified him

  493. and who have placed him

  494. in a particular position

  495. at Calvary's cross

  496. and those for whom that task

  497. has been delegated

  498. were these Roman soldiers

  499. they were experts in crucifixion

  500. you would have to be

  501. because if someone was sentenced

  502. to be crucified

  503. and they didn't die

  504. well you would die in their place

  505. and so it's in their self-interest

  506. to ensure that they know

  507. exactly what they are doing

  508. and so these soldiers

  509. are the immediate beneficiaries

  510. of this prayer in that sense

  511. because these soldiers

  512. who are going about

  513. their day's work

  514. these soldiers who woke up

  515. that morning

  516. and went on shift

  517. not quite knowing

  518. what was about to happen

  519. and then they turn up

  520. to the barracks

  521. and they're told

  522. well there's three guys

  523. you're going to go and crucify

  524. and there may be a bit more

  525. of a crowd this time

  526. so keep an eye out

  527. for any unrest

  528. that may happen

  529. we've been given a tip off

  530. by some of these religious guys

  531. some of these leaders

  532. in that temple place over there

  533. that they may be a bit of trouble today

  534. so all eyes on what you're doing

  535. make sure you know

  536. what you're up to

  537. and these soldiers

  538. they're doing their job aren't they

  539. and they're holding them down

  540. and they're putting the nails

  541. through his hands and his feet

  542. and they're hoisting them upwards

  543. and no doubt

  544. they've been splattered

  545. a little bit by blood

  546. and they're conscious

  547. of quite a number of eyes

  548. upon them

  549. but these are people

  550. who it's highly unlikely

  551. have heard a word

  552. that's come from Jesus' mouth

  553. it's possible

  554. they may have been on duty

  555. in different places

  556. when Jesus has spoken

  557. but it's also highly unlikely

  558. it's even more unlikely

  559. that they've seen

  560. any of his miracles

  561. they may have heard

  562. a little rumour or two

  563. as to who exactly

  564. this person might be

  565. but it didn't really

  566. didn't really compute

  567. it didn't really connect

  568. for them

  569. and so largely

  570. largely

  571. in a position of

  572. of ignorance

  573. they are taking

  574. into their hands

  575. the Lord of Glory

  576. and they are crucifying him

  577. and as such

  578. they are then

  579. being prayed for

  580. just as Isaiah said

  581. would happen

  582. Isaiah some 700 years

  583. beforehand said

  584. that he would make

  585. intercession

  586. for the transgressors

  587. and there's multiple levels

  588. in which we can

  589. apply that

  590. these words

  591. but here we have

  592. Jesus making intercession

  593. he is praying

  594. for those

  595. who have done wrong

  596. in that sense

  597. and he's praying

  598. for these soldiers

  599. but what about others

  600. what about others

  601. who acted

  602. in a way

  603. that they didn't

  604. quite understand

  605. because

  606. is it not what

  607. we learn

  608. in Acts chapter 3

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  609. in verse 17

  610. when Peter

  611. is communicating

  612. the gospel message

  613. he says

  614. now brothers

  615. I know that you

  616. acted in ignorance

  617. as did also

  618. your rulers

  619. but what God

  620. had foretold

  621. by the prophet

  622. actually went

  623. and was unfolded

  624. exactly as was predicted

  625. that there is

  626. a level of ignorance

  627. that took place here

  628. because certainly

  629. the Roman authorities

  630. and even the Jewish authorities

  631. they didn't realise

  632. the enormity

  633. of the sin

  634. that they were perpetrating

  635. at this point

  636. they didn't realise

  637. the enormity of it

  638. and yet

  639. they were directly involved

  640. in the very crucifixion

  641. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  642. and we can take it

  643. a step further

  644. that actually

  645. you and I

  646. many of us in here

  647. now realise

  648. that there is actually

  649. a direct relation

  650. between what took place here

  651. and what happens

  652. in our lives

  653. for long enough

  654. we didn't recognise

  655. that there was

  656. a direct relationship

  657. for long enough

  658. this is just

  659. this is something

  660. that just took place

  661. and it's not

  662. particularly pleasant

  663. and you know

  664. I don't quite know

  665. how to feel

  666. about the whole thing

  667. but it's nothing to do

  668. with me

  669. but it actually does

  670. it does have to do

  671. with us

  672. because it's our sin

  673. that was laid

  674. upon the Saviour

  675. and so we

  676. were in a position

  677. of ignorance

  678. with our connection

  679. to what's taking place

  680. here

  681. but actually

  682. we've come to a position

  683. where our eyes

  684. have been opened

  685. and our ears

  686. have been unblocked

  687. and we've heard

  688. and we've seen

  689. what our sin has caused

  690. and we've bowed

  691. our knee gladly

  692. before Jesus

  693. the Saviour

  694. who has died

  695. in our place

  696. and so here

  697. we are learning

  698. that sins of ignorance

  699. need to be paid for

  700. just as well as

  701. sins that are committed

  702. from a position

  703. of knowledge

  704. sins of ignorance

  705. need to be forgiven

  706. just as sins

  707. of knowledge

  708. sinning against the light

  709. need to be forgiven

  710. and how wonderful

  711. it is

  712. that there is

  713. a Saviour

  714. who is very conscious

  715. of the sin

  716. that needs to be

  717. paid for

  718. the sin that is

  719. willfully

  720. by rejecting

  721. and ignoring God

  722. in the world

  723. he's created

  724. not being or doing

  725. what he asks

  726. in his law

  727. in his word

  728. that the actual sin

  729. willfully

  730. in rejection of God

  731. as well as the sins

  732. committed in ignorance

  733. that there is a Saviour

  734. who is willing

  735. to ensure

  736. that all sin

  737. all sin

  738. the

  739. the

  740. particular sin

  741. that is an issue

  742. for me

  743. and the particular sin

  744. that is an issue

  745. for you

  746. maybe

  747. maybe more than one

  748. but there tends to be one

  749. that

  750. that each one of us

  751. struggles with

  752. in particular

  753. all

  754. sin

  755. sin of

  756. willful

  757. disobedience

  758. as well

  759. as sins

  760. of

  761. committed

  762. in ignorance

  763. that they have

  764. to be

  765. dealt with

  766. and they are

  767. being dealt with

  768. on the cross

  769. by the Saviour

  770. who knows all

  771. about them

  772. and so

  773. we take these words

  774. to ourselves

  775. and we remind

  776. ourselves that

  777. that sins of

  778. ignorance

  779. they are still sins

  780. and they have to be

  781. paid for

  782. praise God

  783. that there is a Saviour

  784. who can deal with it

  785. we remind ourselves

  786. that actually

  787. what's more uncomfortable

  788. to us

  789. is not our sins

  790. of ignorance

  791. but our sins

  792. in knowledge

  793. because there are

  794. many things

  795. that we know

  796. many directives

  797. that we're given

  798. in scripture

  799. that we do not

  800. live out

  801. many

  802. some perhaps

  803. even here

  804. today

  805. who don't have

  806. a living relationship

  807. with Jesus yet

  808. you know who Jesus

  809. is though

  810. and you know

  811. what Jesus has done

  812. and you know

  813. the invitation

  814. that Jesus has given

  815. to you

  816. to follow

  817. and so you cannot

  818. claim ignorance

  819. in that sense

  820. you too

  821. have got light

  822. and you too

  823. need to respond

  824. to the light

  825. and to the invitation

  826. of this

  827. most remarkable

  828. this precious Saviour

  829. who is willing

  830. to go through this

  831. for you

  832. but for those of us

  833. who are the people

  834. of God

  835. I mean how often

  836. how often do we gossip

  837. when we know

  838. that gossip

  839. is listed

  840. very highly

  841. among the sins

  842. in the New Testament

  843. how often do we

  844. harbour resentment

  845. towards

  846. brothers and sisters

  847. in Christ

  848. when we ought not to

  849. how often do we

  850. let pride

  851. take a position

  852. and twist

  853. the impression

  854. that we have

  855. of ourselves

  856. and so often

  857. there are sins

  858. of ignorance

  859. and there's also

  860. sins that are

  861. willfully sinning

  862. against the light

  863. and our sin

  864. all of it

  865. led to this

  866. particular place

  867. and so we remind

  868. ourselves of that

  869. and we are so thankful

  870. we are so thankful

  871. today

  872. that it is here

  873. at this place

  874. in this person

  875. of the eternal son

  876. that our sin

  877. is being dealt with

  878. we also learn

  879. from a passage

  880. like this

  881. that when we are

  882. opposed

  883. for being

  884. the people of God

  885. and living a life

  886. seeking to please God

  887. with folks

  888. not understanding

  889. and folks

  890. mistreating us

  891. perhaps

  892. let's not be surprised

  893. because if there was

  894. blindness

  895. in the way in which

  896. our saviour was treated

  897. that spiritual blindness

  898. continues today

  899. and let's recognise

  900. that if Jesus

  901. was dealt with

  902. in the way he was

  903. well what right

  904. do we have

  905. to always be understood

  906. what right do we have

  907. to always be treated

  908. in the right way

  909. we're very big

  910. on our rights

  911. and our generation

  912. aren't we

  913. but then we look

  914. at the one

  915. who put his rights

  916. to one side

  917. and then we

  918. therefore finish off

  919. by just asking

  920. ourselves

  921. where

  922. where does

  923. your level

  924. of forgiveness

  925. reach

  926. today

  927. if we have

  928. been forgiven

  929. then our level

  930. of forgiveness

  931. forgiveness

  932. for the things

  933. that have been

  934. said and done

  935. or not said

  936. or not done

  937. then our level

  938. of forgiveness

  939. needs to be

  940. as high as it

  941. possibly can be

  942. because we

  943. have received

  944. forgiveness

  945. for all that we

  946. have done

  947. through the saviour

  948. on the cross

  949. who was able to pray

  950. at this moment

  951. father forgive them

  952. for they know

  953. not

  954. what they do

  955. amen

  956. let's pray

  957. father we thank you

  958. for these words

  959. they are precious

  960. and we pray

  961. that they would

  962. sink

  963. deeply

  964. into our

  965. hearts

  966. and souls

  967. that our lives

  968. would be shaped

  969. by the

  970. person and work

  971. the example

  972. the teaching

  973. of your son

  974. and our saviour

  975. forgive us

  976. for our

  977. sins

  978. against you

  979. against the

  980. truth you've

  981. given to us

  982. forgive us

  983. even for the

  984. many sins

  985. that we've

  986. committed in

  987. ignorance

  988. thank you

  989. that there is

  990. a full

  991. and free

  992. and total

  993. forgiveness

  994. available in

  995. Christ

  996. keep our eyes

  997. fixed on him

  998. then we pray

  999. we ask it in

  1000. his name

  1001. amen

  1002. well we

  1003. focus on

  1004. our saviour

  1005. through the

  1006. word that's

  1007. preached but

  1008. also through

  1009. the sacrament

  1010. that we're

  1011. going to

  1012. partake of

  1013. today and

  1014. it is

  1015. helpful

  1016. it is useful

  1017. it is biblical

  1018. for us to

  1019. pause and to

  1020. ask ourselves

  1021. who is it

  1022. that ought to

  1023. be remembering

  1024. the Lord's

  1025. death by

  1026. taking bread

  1027. and wine

  1028. today

  1029. and

  1030. very simply

  1031. I want to

  1032. enlist for you

  1033. three things

  1034. that first of

  1035. all it is

  1036. for those

  1037. who love

  1038. the Lord

  1039. Jesus

  1040. Christ

  1041. those who

  1042. love the

  1043. Lord Jesus

  1044. Christ

  1045. that is

  1046. for whom

  1047. this table

  1048. has been

  1049. prepared

  1050. it's not

  1051. those who

  1052. feel that

  1053. our love

  1054. could not

  1055. be better

  1056. because we

  1057. know it

  1058. could

  1059. our hearts

  1060. as well as

  1061. our minds

  1062. are so very

  1063. divided

  1064. but we

  1065. know

  1066. even in

  1067. our most

  1068. fragile

  1069. condition

  1070. even when

  1071. we have

  1072. placed

  1073. ourselves

  1074. through our

  1075. wanderings

  1076. away from

  1077. our saviour

  1078. and we've

  1079. placed ourselves

  1080. and we've

  1081. wandered away

  1082. he's never

  1083. wandered from

  1084. us we

  1085. wander from

  1086. him

  1087. but even

  1088. when we're

  1089. in the

  1090. messiest

  1091. mess we

  1092. can be

  1093. we know

  1094. deep down

  1095. that we

  1096. love the

  1097. Lord Jesus

  1098. Christ

  1099. and we

  1100. love him

  1101. because he

  1102. first loved

  1103. us

  1104. and when

  1105. we turn

  1106. around and

  1107. we echo

  1108. Peter's words

  1109. and we say

  1110. Lord you know

  1111. all things

  1112. you know

  1113. that I love

  1114. you

  1115. in our

  1116. right

  1117. spiritual

  1118. mind

  1119. we love

  1120. the Lord

  1121. Jesus

  1122. and so if

  1123. you love

  1124. the Lord

  1125. Jesus

  1126. today

  1127. your place

  1128. is at

  1129. his table

  1130. those who

  1131. love the

  1132. Lord Jesus

  1133. also want

  1134. to live

  1135. for the

  1136. Lord Jesus

  1137. don't we

  1138. and the

  1139. Lord's

  1140. table is

  1141. for those

  1142. who are

  1143. living for

  1144. the Lord

  1145. Jesus

  1146. and we're

  1147. living for

  1148. the Lord

  1149. Jesus

  1150. knowing that

  1151. we're not

  1152. living a

  1153. perfect life

  1154. knowing that

  1155. there are

  1156. gaps

  1157. knowing that

  1158. we wish

  1159. that our

  1160. prayer life

  1161. was more

  1162. vibrant

  1163. and we

  1164. wish that

  1165. our absorption

  1166. of God's

  1167. truth was

  1168. more steady

  1169. and flowing

  1170. we wish

  1171. our witness

  1172. was brighter

  1173. we wish

  1174. these things

  1175. would be

  1176. on a

  1177. different

  1178. level

  1179. perhaps

  1180. most of

  1181. the time

  1182. but we

  1183. are seeking

  1184. to live

  1185. for the

  1186. Lord Jesus

  1187. Christ

  1188. we're no

  1189. longer

  1190. living for

  1191. ourselves

  1192. we're no

  1193. longer

  1194. living for

  1195. our reputation

  1196. we're no

  1197. longer

  1198. living for

  1199. our careers

  1200. we're no

  1201. longer

  1202. living for

  1203. other things

  1204. that can be

  1205. perfectly

  1206. legitimate

  1207. but we

  1208. are seeking

  1209. to live

  1210. for the

  1211. Lord Jesus

  1212. Christ

  1213. he could

  1214. have taken

  1215. us

  1216. home to

  1217. glory

  1218. the very

  1219. instant we

  1220. came to a

  1221. living faith

  1222. but he

  1223. hasn't

  1224. he has

  1225. left us

  1226. here

  1227. to serve

  1228. him

  1229. to live

  1230. for him

  1231. and so

  1232. this table

  1233. is for

  1234. those who

  1235. love the

  1236. Lord Jesus

  1237. Christ

  1238. and are

  1239. seeking to

  1240. live for

  1241. him

  1242. and then

  1243. thirdly

  1244. it's those

  1245. who are

  1246. longing for

  1247. him too

  1248. that we

  1249. love him

  1250. that we're

  1251. living for

  1252. him

  1253. and that

  1254. we're longing

  1255. for him

  1256. that we're

  1257. longing to

  1258. know more

  1259. of him

  1260. here

  1261. now

  1262. we're longing

  1263. to have

  1264. more of

  1265. the seasons

  1266. that we

  1267. perhaps had

  1268. perhaps recently

  1269. perhaps way

  1270. way back

  1271. when we

  1272. had that

  1273. felt sense

  1274. of his

  1275. very near

  1276. presence

  1277. with us

  1278. and it

  1279. was so

  1280. precious

  1281. and we

  1282. longed to

  1283. have that

  1284. sense

  1285. of his

  1286. presence

  1287. with us

  1288. again

  1289. and we

  1290. longed to

  1291. know his

  1292. nearness

  1293. and the

  1294. whisper of

  1295. his peace

  1296. to our

  1297. souls

  1298. and we

  1299. longed to

  1300. know more

  1301. of what

  1302. he said

  1303. and when

  1304. he said

  1305. it

  1306. and why

  1307. he said

  1308. it

  1309. and how

  1310. he said

  1311. it

  1312. and what

  1313. he did

  1314. and when

  1315. and why

  1316. and how

  1317. we longed

  1318. to know

  1319. more of

  1320. him

  1321. because we

  1322. actually long

  1323. to be

  1324. with him

  1325. and that's

  1326. not to say

  1327. that we

  1328. don't love

  1329. our families

  1330. and it's

  1331. not to say

  1332. that we're

  1333. not thankful

  1334. for all

  1335. that we

  1336. have

  1337. we do

  1338. but there

  1339. is something

  1340. about Jesus

  1341. that we

  1342. want to

  1343. know more

  1344. about

  1345. a friend

  1346. of mine

  1347. died a

  1348. number of

  1349. years ago

  1350. he was a

  1351. pastor

  1352. in Aberdeen

  1353. and latterly

  1354. he was

  1355. doing different

  1356. things

  1357. helping younger

  1358. pastors like

  1359. me

  1360. and he

  1361. helped me

  1362. hugely

  1363. and I

  1364. remember

  1365. listening

  1366. to

  1367. the last

  1368. time I

  1369. heard him

  1370. speak

  1371. was

  1372. actually

  1373. down in

  1374. Keswick

  1375. at the

  1376. convention

  1377. and he

  1378. was asked

  1379. a question

  1380. what is it

  1381. that you're

  1382. what is it

  1383. that you most

  1384. want just now

  1385. and by this

  1386. point he'd had

  1387. cancer for a

  1388. number of

  1389. years

  1390. and he said

  1391. I just

  1392. I just

  1393. want to

  1394. see Jesus

  1395. and I want

  1396. to be with

  1397. him

  1398. because he's

  1399. the Lord's

  1400. table

  1401. it's not

  1402. it's not

  1403. the free church

  1404. table

  1405. it's not

  1406. the Storname

  1407. free church

  1408. denominations

  1409. none of that

  1410. this is

  1411. the Lord's

  1412. table

  1413. for the

  1414. Lord's

  1415. people

  1416. who love

  1417. him

  1418. who live

  1419. for him

  1420. and who

  1421. long for

  1422. him

  1423. and how

  1424. that

  1425. describes

  1426. you

  1427. and as

  1428. we sing

  1429. now

  1430. Psalm 118

  1431. then if

  1432. you haven't

  1433. already taken

  1434. your place

  1435. at his

  1436. table

  1437. then please

  1438. do so

  1439. we're going

  1440. to sing

  1441. in Psalm

  1442. 118

  1443. singing

  1444. from the

  1445. sing

  1446. Psalms

  1447. verse

  1448. in Psalm

  1449. 118

  1450. we're singing

  1451. from verse

  1452. 15 to

  1453. verse 24

  1454. page 1

  1455. 5

  1456. 6

  1457. triumphant

  1458. shouts

  1459. of joy

  1460. resound

  1461. in places

  1462. where the

  1463. righteous dwell

  1464. the Lord's

  1465. right hand

  1466. is lifted

  1467. high

  1468. his mighty

  1469. hand

  1470. does all

  1471. things

  1472. well

  1473. we're going

  1474. to stand

  1475. as we

  1476. praise God

  1477. triumphant

  1478. triumphant

  1479. shouts

  1480. of joy

  1481. resound

  1482. in places

  1483. where the

  1484. righteous

  1485. dwell

  1486. the Lord's

  1487. right

  1488. is lifted

  1489. high

  1490. his mighty

  1491. and does

  1492. all

  1493. things

  1494. well

  1495. I

  1496. shall

  1497. not

  1498. die

  1499. but

  1500. I

  1501. shall

  1502. live

  1503. !

  1504. the

  1505. Lord's

  1506. great

  1507. works

  1508. I

  1509. will

  1510. proclaim

  1511. the

  1512. Lord

  1513. so

  1514. dearly

  1515. chastened

  1516. me

  1517. but

  1518. rescued

  1519. me

  1520. from

  1521. death's

  1522. domain

  1523. through

  1524. wide

  1525. the

  1526. gates

  1527. of

  1528. righteousness

  1529. I

  1530. enter

  1531. and

  1532. give

  1533. thanks

  1534. to

  1535. God

  1536. this

  1537. is

  1538. the

  1539. gate

  1540. of

  1541. God

  1542. through

  1543. which

  1544. the

  1545. righteous

  1546. come

  1547. before

  1548. the

  1549. Lord

  1550. you

  1551. answered

  1552. me

  1553. I

  1554. will

  1555. give

  1556. thanks

  1557. salvation

  1558. comes

  1559. from

  1560. you

  1561. alone

  1562. the

  1563. soul

  1564. the

  1565. builder

  1566. shall

  1567. reduce

  1568. !

  1569. As

  1570. thou

  1571. become

  1572. the

  1573. the

  1574. Lord

  1575. himself

  1576. all

  1577. this

  1578. this

  1579. the

  1580. Lord

  1581. himself

  1582. has

  1583. done

  1584. this

  1585. this

  1586. is

  1587. this

  1588. is

  1589. the

  1590. heart

  1591. of

  1592. the

  1593. inner

  1594. sky

  1595. this

  1596. is

  1597. the

  1598. kingdom

  1599. Lord

  1600. has

  1601. made

  1602. let

  1603. us

  1604. take

  1605. way

  1606. delight

  1607. !

  1608. Let

  1609. us

  1610. take

  1611. the

  1612. light

  1613. to

  1614. us

  1615. take

  1616. the

  1617. to

  1618. us

  1619. to

  1620. us

  1621. to

  1622. us

  1623. to

  1624. us
