  3. CONGREGATIONS

  4. Let me tell a story.

  5. Let me tell a story.

  6. Let me tell a story.

  7. Thank you.

  8. Thank you.

  9. Thank you.

  10. Thank you.

  11. Thank you.

  12. Thank you.

  13. Thank you.

  14. Thank you.

  15. Thank you.

  16. Thank you.

  17. Thank you.

  18. He's got meetings coming up where he'll be able to address people that we wouldn't normally

  19. be able to address.

  20. He'll be speaking in the Parliament, Scottish Parliament in just over a week's time.

  21. So remember him in that role as well and pray for him.

  22. We'll hear maybe a little bit more about what that role entails in the fellowship afterwards.

  23. Thanks too to all who have supported the communion weekend in many different ways

  24. and opening up your homes for fellowship and attending the services and supporting in the months as well

  25. in so many different ways.

  26. Very thankful to all who have provided in any way over the weekend.

  27. We're also delighted to welcome into membership nine new members,

  28. four by certificate and five by profession.

  29. We do pray for them that they will settle into the congregation here and be a blessing to us.

  30. We have Murdo and Maddie Morrison and Angus and Isbell MacDonald joining by certificate.

  31. And we also have by profession Chrissy Murray, Levi Morrison, Aaron Smith, Fraser and Amy Lipock.

  32. So please do continue to remember them in prayer.

  33. We give thanks to God.

  34. And I know that there are many others who would desire that as well.

  35. And our desire for you is that you will come and put your trust in the Lord.

  36. And we give thanks to God for his continual reminders to us that he is a gracious God,

  37. a generous God, a faithful God.

  38. And we look to him in these days.

  39. So I'm going to ask Alistair now to lead us in our worship.

  40. Again, to have our eyes fixed on Jesus and the wonder of all that he has done for us.

  41. Again, thank you, Calamurto, for your kind welcome and introduction this evening.

  42. We're going to cast our eyes heavenwards as we take to our lips the words of Psalm 36.

  43. Psalm 36 on page 44.

  44. We're going to begin our worship with the words,

  45. Your steadfast love is great, O Lord.

  46. It reaches heaven high.

  47. Your faithfulness is wonderful, extending to the sky.

  48. Singing on to the end of the verse, Mark 10.

  49. To those who know you as their God, your steadfast love impart.

  50. Maintain your righteousness to those of pure and upright heart.

  51. Psalm 36 from verse 5 to the verse Mark 10, five stanzas.

  52. And we'll stand to praise God.

  53. Amen.

  54. Amen.

  55. Amen.

  69. CHOIR SINGS

  70. CHOIR SINGS

  71. CHOIR SINGS

  72. CHOIR SINGS

  73. CHOIR SINGS

  74. to those

  75. of good

  76. and of

  77. right heart.

  78. We're going to bow our heads

  79. and we're going to join our hearts together

  80. as we approach our Heavenly Father

  81. in prayer.

  82. Lord our God,

  83. Father, Son and Holy

  84. Spirit, we bow

  85. before you as we seek

  86. to offer this evening sacrifice

  87. of worship to you,

  88. conscious that you are God

  89. and we are not.

  90. We pray that it would be with

  91. a sense of deep reverence

  92. that we would approach

  93. your holy throne this evening

  94. and yet simultaneously

  95. with a holy boldness,

  96. recognising that you have

  97. given to us this great

  98. invitation to draw near to you.

  99. And not simply have you given

  100. to us that invitation,

  101. you've given to us a promise

  102. that those who draw near to you,

  103. you will in turn

  104. draw near to us.

  105. And we recognise that

  106. the fulfilment of that promise

  107. transforms our gathering

  108. this evening.

  109. because it means that we're not

  110. simply here in the presence

  111. of family and friends,

  112. perhaps regulars and visitors

  113. to this congregation.

  114. But as we seek to draw near to you

  115. and you in turn have promised

  116. to draw near to us,

  117. then we are in the presence

  118. of the living, almighty God.

  119. We pray therefore that we would have

  120. that stillness that comes

  121. from recognising that you are here

  122. watching,

  123. that you are here listening,

  124. that you are the one who walks

  125. among the golden candlesticks,

  126. you walk among the congregations

  127. that bear your name,

  128. you know all the different

  129. matters that are unfolding,

  130. all the different undercurrents

  131. that may be present,

  132. you know everything.

  133. And so we pray that this evening

  134. we would have that sense

  135. of humility

  136. and yet boldness,

  137. that sense of recognition

  138. of our unworthiness

  139. to have this privilege

  140. and yet simultaneously

  141. a genuine sense of joy

  142. that we can come before

  143. the living and true God

  144. and offer this sacrifice

  145. of worship to you.

  146. We pray, Heavenly Father,

  147. that you would grant to us

  148. the very real leading

  149. of your own Holy Spirit

  150. this evening

  151. through all the different

  152. component parts of our service.

  153. As we sing your praises,

  154. we ask that we would be kept

  155. from merely articulating words,

  156. but that our focus would be

  157. on the one whose name

  158. we are praising.

  159. As we have thought

  160. of your steadfast love,

  161. your covenant commitment

  162. to your people,

  163. the fact that you are the God

  164. who keeps your word,

  165. that we can absolutely

  166. depend upon you.

  167. We thank you

  168. that we can praise you

  169. in such a way

  170. for your steadfast love

  171. and we pray that

  172. as we praise this evening,

  173. we would do so

  174. with our eyes fixed upon you

  175. as the one who is worthy

  176. of our praise

  177. and of our adoration.

  178. We pray that your Holy Spirit

  179. would enable us

  180. as we pray,

  181. as we seek to know

  182. how to approach

  183. the living and true God

  184. and how we seek

  185. to ask from you

  186. what we do not deserve,

  187. but yet what you are

  188. so willing to give,

  189. that you would do us good

  190. this evening,

  191. that we would know

  192. a sense of your favour,

  193. of your smile

  194. resting over us

  195. as we seek you

  196. above all else.

  197. We thank you

  198. for your word

  199. and we pray,

  200. Father,

  201. that as we read

  202. and study

  203. and submit ourselves

  204. to the teaching

  205. of your word

  206. this evening,

  207. we pray that we would

  208. do so with an eagerness

  209. to hear what you have

  210. to say to us

  211. and that we would do so

  212. recognising that

  213. your word

  214. is the food

  215. for our souls,

  216. it is the direction

  217. for our lives,

  218. it is the way

  219. in which we hear

  220. what you have to say

  221. to us

  222. and we pray,

  223. therefore,

  224. that we would be

  225. eagerly anticipating

  226. what we may learn

  227. of our Saviour

  228. as we open

  229. your word tonight.

  230. We thank you

  231. that your word

  232. reminds us

  233. that all of Scripture

  234. points to our Saviour

  235. and so we pray

  236. that we may be

  237. able to see

  238. and to savour again

  239. our precious dear Lord.

  240. As we have thought

  241. much of him

  242. in these days,

  243. we pray that that would be

  244. what we will do

  245. for the rest of our days,

  246. that we will think

  247. much of our Saviour.

  248. Thank you for the opportunity

  249. to be able to focus in

  250. through word and sacrament

  251. on that great cost

  252. of our salvation

  253. this morning

  254. and we pray,

  255. Father,

  256. that it would be

  257. even now

  258. still

  259. our souls

  260. being fed

  261. from the privileges

  262. that have been ours.

  263. Father,

  264. we confess

  265. before you

  266. that

  267. as we

  268. see our Saviour,

  269. we realise

  270. that

  271. in comparison

  272. to him,

  273. we are flawed

  274. and we are

  275. individuals

  276. who are polluted

  277. in every different way.

  278. As we think

  279. of what your word says

  280. when Isaiah recognised

  281. that he was a man

  282. of unclean lips

  283. as Peter recognised

  284. before

  285. the Lord himself

  286. that he was

  287. a sinful man

  288. that he didn't deserve

  289. to be there,

  290. we realise

  291. that that is us,

  292. we do not deserve

  293. your goodness

  294. your mercy,

  295. your grace

  296. toward us.

  297. We do not deserve it

  298. because not simply

  299. of the sins

  300. that we committed

  301. before we came

  302. to a living knowledge

  303. of Jesus Christ

  304. but even the sins

  305. that we have committed

  306. since.

  307. And Father,

  308. we cannot help

  309. but be grieved

  310. by them

  311. because we know

  312. that it is possible

  313. for us to grieve

  314. your spirit

  315. by the way

  316. in which we live.

  317. And so we pray,

  318. that we would know

  319. real,

  320. true confession

  321. again this evening

  322. and we pray

  323. that again

  324. we would know

  325. the delight

  326. that you are faithful,

  327. you are just,

  328. you will forgive

  329. and cleanse

  330. from all of our

  331. unrighteousness

  332. when we come

  333. confessing our sins.

  334. Father,

  335. thank you

  336. that your knowledge

  337. of each person

  338. in here

  339. is encyclopedic.

  340. There is nothing

  341. about any one of us

  342. that you don't know.

  343. You know those

  344. who have been eagerly

  345. anticipating gathering

  346. tonight

  347. and you know those

  348. Father who have come

  349. to this place

  350. and they don't want

  351. to be here

  352. and yet

  353. you have brought us

  354. here

  355. for this divine

  356. appointment tonight

  357. and we pray

  358. that for each one

  359. of us

  360. it would be

  361. to do us good

  362. that we might

  363. see the wonder

  364. of who the Saviour is

  365. and that we might

  366. all be irresistibly

  367. drawn to him

  368. as we bow

  369. before him

  370. in humble worship

  371. and adoration.

  372. Please guide us,

  373. please lead us

  374. and please accept us

  375. for we come

  376. through that name

  377. which is most precious

  378. to you than any other

  379. in the name of your Son

  380. and our Saviour.

  381. Amen.

  382. We're going to further

  383. praise God.

  384. This time we're going to

  385. sing in Psalm number 27

  386. singing from the

  387. sing Psalms version

  388. Psalm 27

  389. on page 31

  390. Psalm 27

  391. page 31

  392. we're singing

  393. from the beginning

  394. down to the end

  395. of the verse

  396. marked 5

  397. that's 6 stanzas

  398. Psalm 27

  399. page 31

  400. the Lord's my Saviour

  401. and my light

  402. who will make me dismayed

  403. the Lord's the stronghold

  404. of my life

  405. why should I

  406. be afraid

  407. and so on

  408. down to the end

  409. of the verse

  410. marked 5

  411. 6 stanzas

  412. and again we'll stand

  413. to praise God.

  414. the Lord's my Saviour

  415. and my light

  416. who will make me dismayed

  417. the Lord's the stronghold of my life

  418. why should I be afraid

  419. of sin

  420. You are set to be to take my life away.

  421. My love, my son, is not my foes, will stumble in my day.

  422. Although I'm not the end, my heart will feel no pain.

  423. Oh, what against me is true, the lies I will lift up my hand.

  424. What against me is true, the lies I will lift up my hand.

  425. I'll flee before the Lord, and this I'll seek always.

  426. As I may come within God's house, I'll dwell there all my years.

  427. Back on the beauty of the Lord, I constantly may gaze.

  428. I'll flee before the Lord, and this I'll flee before the Lord.

  429. In His wings

  430. For in His square

  431. May He will keep me

  432. Safe in troubled days

  433. Within His tent

  434. He'll shelter me

  435. And on the Lord

  436. Me raised

  437. Our scripture reading this evening

  438. is taken from the Gospel of John and chapter 12.

  439. John chapter 12, we're going to take up a reading at verse 20.

    John 12 chapter mention

  440. John chapter 12 at verse 20.

    John 12 chapter mention

  441. John chapter 12, verse 20.

    John 12:20

  442. Now among those who went up to worship at the feast

  443. were some Greeks.

  444. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee

  445. and asked him,

  446. Sir, we wish to see Jesus.

  447. Philip went and told Andrew.

  448. Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

  449. And Jesus answered them,

  450. The hour has come

  451. for the Son of Man

  452. to be glorified.

  453. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  454. unless a grain of wheat

  455. falls into the earth and dies,

  456. it remains alone.

  457. But if it dies,

  458. it bears much fruit.

  459. Whoever loves his life

  460. loses it.

  461. And whoever hates his life

  462. in this world

  463. will keep it for eternal life.

  464. If anyone serves me,

  465. he must follow me.

  466. And where I am,

  467. there will my servant be also.

  468. If anyone serves me,

  469. the Father

  470. will honour him.

  471. Now

  472. is my soul

  473. troubled.

  474. And what shall I say?

  475. Father,

  476. save me from this hour?

  477. But for this purpose

  478. I have come

  479. to this hour.

  480. Father,

  481. glorify your name.

  482. Then a voice

  483. came from heaven.

  484. I have glorified it

  485. and I will glorify it

  486. again.

  487. The crowd that had stood there

  488. and heard it

  489. said that it thundered.

  490. Others said,

  491. An angel

  492. has spoken to him.

  493. Jesus answered,

  494. This voice

  495. has come

  496. for your sake,

  497. not mine.

  498. Now is the judgment

  499. of this world.

  500. Now will the ruler

  501. of this world

  502. be cast out.

  503. And I,

  504. when I am lifted up

  505. from the earth,

  506. will draw all people

  507. to myself.

  508. He said this

  509. to show

  510. by what kind of death

  511. he was going to die.

  512. So the crowd

  513. answered him,

  514. We've heard from the law

  515. that the Christ

  516. remains forever.

  517. How can you say

  518. that the Son of Man

  519. must be lifted up?

  520. Who is this

  521. Son of Man?

  522. So Jesus said to them,

  523. The light

  524. is among you

  525. for a little while longer.

  526. Walk

  527. while you have the light,

  528. lest darkness

  529. overtake you.

  530. The one

  531. who walks

  532. in the darkness

  533. does not know

  534. what he is going.

  535. While you have the light,

  536. believe in the light,

  537. so that you may become

  538. sons

  539. of light.

  540. The grass withers

  541. and the flowers fade,

  542. but the word of our God

  543. stands

  544. forever.

  545. Let's once more

  546. bow our heads

  547. as we approach

  548. our Heavenly Father

  549. in prayer.

  550. We pray, Heavenly Father,

  551. that your

  552. blessing

  553. might rest upon

  554. this congregation

  555. and its witness

  556. in the months

  557. and years

  558. and decades

  559. to come.

  560. We thank you

  561. for the witness

  562. of this congregation

  563. over many, many years.

  564. We thank you

  565. for the way

  566. in which it has

  567. been used

  568. by you

  569. to draw

  570. many people

  571. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  572. And we pray, Father,

  573. that what has been done

  574. in the past

  575. would be merely

  576. the beginning

  577. of what will yet happen

  578. with more and more people

  579. coming to hear

  580. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  581. and being drawn

  582. by the Holy Spirit

  583. into a living relationship

  584. with him.

  585. We do thank you

  586. for Calamurto

  587. and all who serve

  588. alongside him

  589. in either official

  590. or unofficial capacities,

  591. all who are willing

  592. to give

  593. of their time

  594. and of the gifts

  595. that you've provided

  596. them with.

  597. To serve

  598. in whatever capacity

  599. within the congregation.

  600. We pray, Father,

  601. that you would encourage

  602. all who serve

  603. in whatever way

  604. that might be.

  605. We pray especially, Father,

  606. for any who may feel

  607. that at times

  608. their service

  609. is overlooked.

  610. Father,

  611. we pray that you would

  612. make it very real

  613. to them

  614. that there is no service

  615. for you

  616. that is ever overlooked.

  617. You are the one

  618. who sees

  619. and you are the one

  620. who will reward.

  621. We pray, Father,

  622. that as the people

  623. of God

  624. in this congregation

  625. mingle

  626. mingle within

  627. the people

  628. of this town

  629. and beyond,

  630. whether that is

  631. with their neighbours

  632. or with their work colleagues

  633. or in whatever other

  634. front line they may have,

  635. we pray

  636. that what might be seen

  637. from your people

  638. is more and more

  639. a reflection

  640. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  641. whom your people

  642. here love.

  643. We pray that that

  644. would be what will draw

  645. men and women,

  646. boys and girls.

  647. We pray that that's

  648. what the people of God

  649. would be known for

  650. in this place,

  651. known for their

  652. similarity

  653. and the resemblance

  654. that they have

  655. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  656. Father,

  657. we long that that

  658. would be the case

  659. not simply here

  660. but throughout

  661. every Christian

  662. congregation

  663. up and down

  664. this land

  665. who holds

  666. your word

  667. to be true

  668. and who seeks

  669. to portray

  670. Jesus Christ

  671. as the crucified

  672. yet risen

  673. exalted

  674. and returning

  675. Saviour.

  676. We pray that we

  677. would see days

  678. in our country

  679. once again

  680. whereby young and old

  681. would be drawn

  682. by the power of the Spirit

  683. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  684. We thank you

  685. for what we are hearing

  686. of our renewed interest

  687. with different age groups

  688. and different demographics

  689. within the country

  690. and we pray,

  691. that as people

  692. seem to be stirring

  693. to the sense

  694. of hopelessness

  695. that a secular

  696. humanist outlook

  697. actually brings,

  698. we ask Father

  699. that you would bring

  700. those who are seeking

  701. into contact

  702. with those

  703. who have a living

  704. relationship with you

  705. so that they may seek

  706. and that they may find

  707. and that they may bow

  708. before the Lord Jesus

  709. as Lord and Saviour.

  710. Father,

  711. we've already mentioned

  712. the fact that you know

  713. each one of us

  714. in here tonight

  715. and so that means

  716. you know everything

  717. that's going on

  718. in our lives

  719. this evening.

  720. You know those

  721. who've come into this place

  722. tonight with many burdens,

  723. perhaps burdens

  724. that are crushing

  725. in their weight,

  726. perhaps burdens

  727. that are so,

  728. so desperately heavy

  729. that they wonder

  730. if they're going

  731. to survive them.

  732. Father,

  733. we thank you

  734. that you have told us

  735. that there is

  736. a great burden bearer

  737. and that there is

  738. an invitation to know

  739. that we can have

  740. the rest

  741. that Jesus alone

  742. can give.

  743. We thank Father

  744. of those who perhaps

  745. have come to this place

  746. tonight with many

  747. different fears,

  748. perhaps those who've come

  749. with unanswered questions,

  750. perhaps those who've come

  751. with doubts and difficulties

  752. that are causing

  753. real problems

  754. in their lives.

  755. Father,

  756. we realise that

  757. we live in a broken world

  758. and the brokenness

  759. caused by sin

  760. manifests itself

  761. in many different ways

  762. and yet,

  763. Father,

  764. we thank you

  765. that there is a remedy

  766. for that brokenness

  767. and that is found

  768. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  769. and so,

  770. please help me

  771. this evening

  772. to communicate

  773. your truth

  774. in the power

  775. of your own Holy Spirit

  776. and help us all

  777. to receive

  778. your word

  779. as it is,

  780. not the word

  781. of any preacher

  782. but the word

  783. of the living God

  784. spoken to us.

  785. Please enable us

  786. to be freed

  787. from all manner

  788. of distraction

  789. of things

  790. that may have happened

  791. or are happening

  792. or may yet happen

  793. in the future.

  794. Help us

  795. for the time

  796. that you have gathered

  797. us together

  798. to have our eyes

  799. focused

  800. on the Lord Jesus Christ,

  801. the one in his name

  802. we pray.

  803. Amen.

  804. Well,

  805. before we study

  806. some of these words

  807. we're going to sing

  808. in Psalm 43

  809. singing from the

  810. Scottish Psalter

  811. Psalm 43

  812. this is on page

  813. number 264

  814. Psalm 43

  815. O send thy light

  816. forth

  817. and thy truth

  818. let them be guides

  819. to me

  820. and bring me

  821. to thine holy hill

  822. even where

  823. thy dwellings be

  824. and so on

  825. to the end of the psalm

  826. Psalm 43

  827. page 246

  828. and verse 3

  829. O send thy light

  830. forth

  831. and thy truth

  832. O send thy light

  833. forth

  834. and thy truth

  835. let them be guides

  836. to me

  837. and bring me

  838. to thy holy hill

  839. in where

  840. thy dwelling's

  841. be

  842. and where

  843. I took

  844. a softer

  845. road

  846. to God

  847. my chief

  848. and choice

  849. in God

  850. in God

  851. my God

  852. thy name

  853. to praise

  854. my heart

  855. my will

  856. and why

  857. why

  858. are

  859. the

  860. and why

  861. will

  862. sing

  863. thoughts

  864. are

  865. now

  866. disquieted

  867. in me

  868. still

  869. still

  870. trust

  871. in God

  872. for him

  873. to praise

  874. good

  875. cause

  876. thy

  877. yet

  878. shall

  879. have

  880. he

  881. of

  882. my

  883. counten

  884. sister

  885. held

  886. my

  887. God

  888. that

  889. doth

  890. me

  891. save

  892. let me invite you to take your Bibles and to have them open at John chapter 12 this evening to words that we read earlier on John chapter 12

John 12 chapter mention John 12 chapter mention

  893. and I want us to read again the words of verse 32 John chapter 12 and the words of verse 32 where Jesus amongst other things says and I when I am lifted up from the earth will draw all people to myself

    John 12 chapter mention

  894. you may

  895. you may not know that the scientists in China and in America are having a bit of a competition at present to try and develop the world's strongest magnet

  896. currently China is a magnet that is 800,000 times stronger than the earth's magnetic field

  897. so the earth's magnetic field compass always points north

  898. it's a magnetic field that does that

  899. China has developed a magnet that's 800,000 times stronger than the earth's magnetic field

  900. we're assured by both the Chinese and American scientists that these developments are going to help with our understanding of chemistry and physics and materials

  901. but human nature being what human nature is whatever good discoveries we end up having it tends to be used for things that are less than helpful

  902. but what we find in these words of verse 32 here is actually something that's got an even stronger pulling power than this magnet that the Chinese have been able to develop

  903. that's 800,000 times stronger than the earth's magnetic field

  904. because what we find here in verse 32 is that we've got a drawing power that can draw from thousands of miles away

  905. that can draw from thousands of years ago

  906. right back to a particular location where a particular event took place

  907. whereby outside of Jerusalem the Lord Jesus Christ the Lord of glory

  908. the one present at the very beginning of time calling into existence all that we see

  909. the giver of life is about to die

  910. the light of the world is about to be extinguished

  911. Jesus says that when he is when he is lifted up from the earth

  912. that he is going to draw all people to himself

  913. and that's what we see

  914. we see people of all ages drawn to Jesus

  915. we see people from all cultures drawn to Jesus

  916. we see people from all generations drawn to Jesus

  917. drawn so that they look to the events of this cross at Calvary

  918. and not just merely with a casual glance at something that's happened and then they move on

  919. but drawn in such a way that when they look and see what Jesus has done

  920. then their lives are transformed

  921. and so the pulling, drawing, captivating appeal of Jesus Christ

  922. when he is declared in all of his glory

  923. it will draw to himself all those whom the Father will call

  924. and tonight we're going to be thinking about this drawing magnetic power

  925. of Jesus

  926. that transforms men, women, boys and girls

  927. that has the power to transform you this evening

  928. if you entered this building without a living relationship with Jesus

  929. as we encounter the power of the gospel

  930. it is that power that can change your life

  931. that can change anyone of our lives

  932. and so this evening we're going to be thinking about this drawing power of Jesus

  933. let's put this into its context

  934. however we need to always make sure we do so

  935. and what we saw on Friday evening

  936. when we looked at the first part of this section of John chapter 12

    John 12 chapter mention

  937. we saw that there was a great request

  938. those folks had come from far away

  939. and they had come with a particular desire

  940. we want to see Jesus

  941. and when Jesus was given this message

  942. he took their arrival as the sign that the hour that had always been in the future

  943. throughout John's gospel as a drum beat

  944. every so often the hour has not yet come

  945. the hour has not yet come

  946. the hour has not yet come

  947. with these Greek visitors

  948. with their request to see Jesus

  949. he now says that the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified

  950. glorified

  951. the hour has come now for the plan of salvation

  952. developed in eternity

  953. enacted in time to move on to its next phase

  954. and this next phase is going to mean that

  955. the people from all the nations of the earth

  956. are going to be

  957. are going to be welcomed

  958. and blessed as they look to Jesus

  959. up until this point Jesus had only been going to the lost sheep of Israel

  960. but now there's this wider perspective

  961. because now the plan of salvation has moved on to a new phase

  962. a critical phase for Jesus

  963. and so the first thing I want us to point out from this passage this evening

  964. is the internal impact of this next phase if you like

  965. of the plan of salvation

  966. and the impact that that has on Jesus

  967. and we have that for us described in verse 27 to verse 29

  968. where it says

  969. now is my soul troubled

  970. and what shall I say

  971. Father save me from this hour

  972. but for this purpose I've come to this hour

  973. Father glorify your name

  974. then a voice came from heaven

  975. I have glorified it

  976. and I will glorify it again

  977. the crowd that stood there and heard it said

  978. that it had thundered

  979. others said

  980. an angel has spoken to him

  981. the eternal impact of this hour coming upon Jesus

  982. there was a sequel last year I think it was

  983. Gladiators 2 movie

  984. some of you may have seen the original Gladiators film

  985. in that film the main character played by an actor called Russell Crowe

  986. in his, in the death scene of the main character

  987. what stood out in that movie was that over about five minutes

  988. you saw this main character dying

  989. and it would go, revert images from him to images of what he's thinking about

  990. and he's walking through fields and there's all this beautiful sunset

  991. and it's all so calm and it's so peaceful

  992. and bit by bit this carries on until eventually death comes

  993. and you know the movies like to portray what death is going to be like

  994. and not necessarily particularly accurately

  995. but that's them

  996. so there you have the main character

  997. in that great, that action adventure as it were

  998. and his death was so calm and so peaceful

  999. and so pleasant and filled with wonderful images

1000. and you think what a contrast to the Lord of Glory

1001. because as the main character of all scripture

1002. we have recorded for us in all four Gospels

1003. that when Jesus was approaching his death

1004. it wasn't nice, calm, relaxing images

1005. there wasn't warm, soothing music in the background

1006. to create just the right atmosphere

1007. there was in the sense of our Saviour

1008. the horror of what was about to unfold

1009. that for our Saviour, when he says here

1010. now is my soul troubled

  1011. he's not exaggerating

1012. he is communicating the agitation

  1013. that he now experiences

1014. conscious that the hour has now come

1015. this is the same terminology that's used in different occasions

1016. it's used as Jesus saw the impact of death

1017. and what it's done in the household of Lazarus

1018. he's going to use similar words

1019. agitation, trauma as he thinks of the betrayal

  1020. in chapter 13

1021. the words are going to be used there as well

1022. but for Jesus, he is now deeply troubled

1023. words that are associated in the original with trauma

1024. why is he so troubled?

1025. because with the hour coming

1026. the time where he is going to become a curse for sin

1027. and be before the holy justice of a sin hating God

1028. well that, instead of being an event well in the future

1029. is now an event that's right up close

1030. and the prospect of standing before a sin hating God

1031. carrying this sin of the world on him

1032. is something that shook him right to his very core

1033. this is a different perspective to what we see of Jesus, isn't it?

1034. because we think of Jesus and the impact of his teaching

1035. and we think of the impact of his ministry

1036. people being made whole again

1037. we think of the control that he's had

1038. and yet now as he comes to a point

1039. where this hour is arriving

1040. for him the full weight of what's about to be unleashed upon him

  1041. is coming into focus

1042. and it's not something he's shrugging off

1043. it's something that's leaving him really, really troubled

1044. because he knows he's going to be in a position

1045. where he's never been in before

1046. because not simply the one who had no sin

1047. is now going to become sin as we thought about

1048. but the one who has lived that life of intimate connection with his father

  1049. even through his ministry

1050. reflecting the father's words and will

1051. and telling people the father's always with him

  1052. he's going to experience

1053. as he stands before this sin hating God

1054. bearing your sin and bearing my sin

1055. he's going to experience a break in that connection

1056. a break in that communion

1057. he's going to sense as if that's no longer there

1058. he's going to cry out

1059. and he's going to say

1060. well my God why have you forsaken me?

1061. he's not even going to have that sense

1062. as we thought of earlier on today

  1063. of that fatherly presence

1064. that accompanied him all the way through

  1065. so for Jesus here

1066. he's conscious of the time

1067. that he is going to be in a situation

1068. that he's never been in before

1069. and the reason he's going to be in that position

1070. is because of the brokenness of your life

1071. and the brokenness of my life

  1072. brokenness caused by sin

1073. caused by our own sin

1074. caused by other people's sin

  1075. but nonetheless the brokenness

1076. the sinfulness of our life

1077. he's going to be in that place

1078. to deal with our sin once and for all

1079. he's going to be in that place

1080. so that he can deal with the worst of our secrets

1081. the things that we hope people never find out about

1082. he's going to be in that place

  1083. bearing our sin

1084. conscious of the attitudes that we have shown

1085. and the selfishness that's been there

1086. and the way in which we perhaps have used others

1087. and the way in which we perhaps have manipulated

1088. or the way in which we've cruelly dealt with other people

1089. and the way in which we've had excesses in different ways

1090. and all of these things that have evidenced

1091. how we were no longer

1092. or how we were not living in a right relationship with God

1093. all of that was going to be condensed

1094. all of it was going to be concentrated

1095. and all of it was going to be taken by our Saviour

1096. and so the very prospect of this unfolding

  1097. was leaving him troubled

1098. little wonder it left him troubled

1099. and so his trouble as this hour is approaching

1100. is a trouble that only he as this infinite being

1101. who could offer this and pay this infinite price

1102. was a trouble that only he could take

1103. and he could deal with for us

1104. and so he makes it clear that his soul is troubled

1105. and into that context he speaks and says

1106. well should I ask the Father to somehow save me from this hour

1107. and of course there is the recognition that he knew

1108. that it was for this hour

  1109. he's coming from verse 27

1110. and then he has this prayer

  1111. Father glorify your name

1112. and just as Jesus had at the very start of his ministry

  1113. this voice from heaven

  1114. to encourage and to

1115. and to give to him what he needed at that moment

1116. as he rose from the river Jordan

  1117. having been baptized

1118. the Holy Spirit descending upon him

1119. and this voice thundering from heaven

1120. this is my beloved son

1121. in whom I am well pleased

1122. and just as Jesus in

  1123. in John 17

1124. as he as he set his face towards Jerusalem

1125. and all that was about to unfold

1126. it was now coming closer

1127. and still there is this word from heaven

  1128. and now here

1129. as the hour has now struck

1130. we have this third word from heaven

1131. when the voice from heaven says

1132. I have glorified your name

1133. and I will glorify it again

1134. and so what we're learning here

1135. is that the Father is being glorified

1136. through the ministry of the Son

1137. and so we learned that at the birth of Jesus didn't we?

1138. the very arrival of the Creator God into his creation

1139. to be limited in a time and in a space

1140. for the first time in his existence

1141. to be helpless, to be dependent

1142. well what was the anthem that the angels would sing?

1143. well glory to God in the highest

1144. so there was glory given to the Father

1145. through the very arrival of Jesus into this broken world

1146. and there was glory given to the Father

1147. through the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ

1148. as he taught, as he healed, as he showed back

1149. as he showed by example how to live

1150. as he protected, as he rescued

1151. as he stood up for those who were being mistreated

1152. all of that was bringing glory to the Heavenly Father

1153. and yet there is a sense in which

1154. the ultimate glory to the Father

1155. is going to be the glory that's going to be

1156. expressed at the cross at Calvary

1157. because there at the cross at Calvary

1158. the Father is going to be glorified

1159. because there at the cross at Calvary

1160. we're going to see something about

1161. of the absolute holiness of God

1162. we're going to see something of the absolute justice of God

1163. we're going to see something of the absolute faithfulness of God

1164. we're going to see something of the depth of the very love of God

1165. all of these are on display at Calvary's cross

1166. the holy God who cannot just ignore sin

1167. the just God who has to ensure that justice is done

1168. the God who is faithful, the God who has promised

1169. that someday there would be somebody who would come

1170. who would undo the damage done and brought into this world by Satan

1171. and undo the damage caused by sin once and for all

1172. and on display would be the very love of God

1173. that how God can simultaneously be the one who punishes

1174. and the one who saves at the same time

1175. and so the cross is going to be this great glorification of God the Father

1176. and here we have the Son being very conscious of that

1177. and so on the cross what is unfolding?

1178. well the eternal Son is bringing glory to the Father

1179. and the Father is being glorified through this work

1180. we tend to think of glory

1181. when people are given a platform or put on some podium

1182. or given some spotlight or whatever

1183. and somehow they are exalted in one way or another

1184. whereas here the glory is going to be given

1185. as Jesus is lifted up

1186. but lifted up in an entirely different way

1187. as he's lifted up to die the death that we deserve

1188. and so this hour has come

1189. the internal impact of this hour upon Jesus

1190. is that he's troubled by it

1191. the external impact of this hour

1192. is what Jesus goes on to speak about next

  1193. from verse 30 to verse 36

1194. because Jesus speaks that a number of things

1195. are now going to happen

1196. because this hour has come

1197. and a number of things are going to be learned

1198. that now that this hour has come

1199. first of all that judgment is coming

  1200. and Jesus sees

1201. now is the judgment of this world

  1202. verse 31

1203. now is the judgment of this world

1204. because what's going to unfold at Calvary

1205. is going to make people aware

1206. that actually the biggest problems in humanity

  1207. they're not external

1208. and they're not time bound

1209. but they're actually eternal issues

1210. that the big problems of humanity

1211. are not going to be solved by economics

1212. they're not going to be solved by education

1213. it's not going to be solved by environmental improvements

1214. all of which have their place in a particular realm

1215. but not in this realm

1216. because the biggest problems that humanity has

  1217. that society has

1218. that if we take it personally

1219. the biggest problems that we have by nature

1220. it's not the problems that are out there

1221. it's the problems that are in here

1222. and this is telling us that

  1223. on the cross itself

1224. judgment for this world is going to be there

1225. because what's going to happen on this cross

1226. well the only person who ever walked on this earth

1227. the only person who perfectly loved God

1228. with all of his heart, soul, strength and mind

1229. the only person who perfectly loved his neighbour as himself

1230. the only one who lived a truly perfect life

1231. what did we do to him?

1232. well we killed him didn't we?

1233. what did we do to the Saviour of the world?

1234. well we put him to death

1235. we hung him on a cross

1236. we nailed him to a cross

1237. and we left him there to die

1238. and Jesus is saying that there is no judgment

  1239. judgment is coming

  1240. and judgment is

1241. it culminates on that work on the cross

1242. the second thing that Jesus sees

1243. by way of an external impact of this hour

  1244. now verse 31

1245. will the ruler of this world be cast out?

1246. that what's going to happen on this cross at Calvary

1247. as the Father is glorified

1248. is that this work will simultaneously be fatal to Satan

1249. will be fatal to Satan

1250. that Satan as he thinks

1251. he finally has the eternal Son of God

1252. what he wants him to be

  1253. upon a cross

1254. with the weapon that he thinks

1255. is the most suitable weapon

  1256. in his arsenal

1257. to destroy Jesus Christ once and for all

1258. is going to find out

1259. that what he thinks is his greatest moment of triumph

1260. is actually the moment of his ultimate defeat

1261. because Jesus has told us

1262. didn't he in John's Gospel a couple of chapters back

1263. he said no one is going to take my life from me

1264. I will lay it down

1265. and I will take it back up again

  1266. so Satan thinking

  1267. this weapon of death

1268. that is going to somehow extinguish

1269. the light of the world

1270. he thinks that this is his moment

1271. that this is where he is ruling

1272. and he doesn't seem to appreciate

1273. that the work that's about to unfold

1274. will mean that the ruler of this world

  1275. his power broken

1276. never to be restored again

1277. and so the defeat of Satan

  1278. is going to be

1279. so clearly in view in that sense

  1280. Satan is so foolish

  1281. as he sees Jesus

1282. as he sees him breathe his last

  1283. he's so foolish

1284. he thinks he's now got his empire established

1285. and yet his empire is as strong as a sandcastle

1286. with the tide coming in

1287. because you know what it's like

1288. and the tide's coming in

  1289. and slowly but surely

1290. you know that sandcastle is going to fall over

  1291. and as he sees

1292. as he sees the Lord of Glory breathe his last

  1293. no doubt he rejoices

  1294. only to realise

  1295. three days later

1296. that the very Lord of Glory is back

  1297. death defeated

  1298. so the external impact

  1299. of the our coming

1300. is that there is judgement

  1301. that Satan's power

  1302. once and for all

1303. that there is a new king in town

1304. that there is a new king

1305. who has dealt with the old king

  1306. Revelation tells us

  1307. in chapter 11

  1308. verse 15

1309. the kingdom of the world

  1310. has become the kingdom

  1311. of our Lord

  1312. and of his Christ

  1313. and he shall reign

  1314. the third

  1315. external impact

  1316. is that Jesus

  1317. will draw all people

1318. and so now we get back

  1319. to where we started

  1320. this is where Jesus

  1321. will draw all people

  1322. to himself

1323. this is what he said here

  1324. verse 32

1325. when I am lifted up

1326. I will draw all people

1327. and so we are thinking now

  1328. of outstretched arms

  1329. entreating

  1330. may see

  1331. of this Jesus

  1332. of his identity

  1333. and of his willingness

  1334. to be found

  1335. in such a position

  1336. upon a cross

  1337. to secure our freedom

  1338. that all who will

  1339. who will hear

1340. and all who will see

  1341. will be welcomed

  1342. that they will be

  1343. that they will be

  1344. that they will be

  1345. that they will be

  1346. that they will be

  1347. something about Jesus

  1348. that will draw them

  1349. to him

1350. it's not that they are

  1351. that they are driven

  1352. to Jesus

1353. it's that they will be

  1354. drawn to Jesus

  1355. because as we

  1356. as we think of

  1357. what we are like

  1358. and the gap

1359. that exists in our lives

  1360. between the people

1361. that we want to be

  1362. that we really are

1363. we realize that we are

1364. not the way we should be

  1365. and that deep down

1366. that's going to come back

  1367. to haunt us

1368. and it's going to haunt us

  1369. when we actually stand

  1370. before our maker

  1371. and give an account

1372. for how we have lived

1373. and loved in this world

1374. and so we actually need

  1375. to have somebody

  1376. who's going to stand

  1377. with us

1378. when we are in that court setting

1379. and there is nobody better

  1380. to stand with us

  1381. in fact there's nobody

1382. qualified to stand with us

  1383. other than

1384. the very Lord of glory himself

  1385. because anybody else

1386. that we may think of

  1387. our closest friends

  1388. our most loved family

  1389. well they too

  1390. have got this gap

  1391. and they too

1392. are going to have to stand

  1393. before almighty God

  1394. and answer for themselves

  1395. they can't advocate

  1396. on our behalf

  1397. but there is somebody

  1398. who can

  1399. there's somebody

  1400. who can

  1401. somebody who was

  1402. willing to put himself

  1403. into that place

  1404. of horror

  1405. somebody who was willing

  1406. to put himself

  1407. into that place

  1408. where beforehand

  1409. the very prospect

  1410. almost broke him

  1411. whether we think here

  1412. of his trouble

  1413. or whether we think

  1414. specifically of Gethsemane

  1415. as the sweat pores

1416. are now tinged with blood

  1417. such was the weight

  1418. the pressure

  1419. upon him

  1420. and he's willing

  1421. to do that

  1422. he's willing to go

  1423. into that place

  1424. for us

  1425. and he's willing

  1426. to go there

  1427. and he says

  1428. listen I have paid

  1429. the penalty for you

  1430. so come to me

  1431. follow me

  1432. know my rest

  1433. and know the fulfillment

1434. that I can give to you

  1435. and know the love

1436. that I have for you

1437. the love I've shown you

  1438. learn of that love

  1439. and keep learning

  1440. of that love

  1441. and whoever will hear

  1442. of that love

  1443. will be drawn

  1444. will be captivated

  1445. because the pulling power

  1446. of the crucified

  1447. yet risen saviour

  1448. is a power

  1449. that can transform

  1450. from whatever

  1451. starting position

  1452. from a starting position

  1453. of hardened atheism

  1454. from a starting position

  1455. of agnosticism

  1456. or humanism

  1457. or whatever else

1458. it might want to be

  1459. it doesn't matter

1460. how firm a starting position

  1461. somebody can be

  1462. when the pulling power

  1463. of the gospel

  1464. through the Holy Spirit

  1465. starts drawing people

  1466. it doesn't matter

  1467. how fixed

  1468. their position was

  1469. become more and more

  1470. obsessed

1471. with who is this Jesus

  1472. he lived a life

  1473. I couldn't live

  1474. he cared for people

  1475. that other people

  1476. were just quite happy

  1477. to ignore

1478. he wouldn't walk on by

  1479. he would see things

  1480. that other people

  1481. didn't see

  1482. and this Bible

  1483. tells us

  1484. that he's not changed

1485. and so that he sees me

1486. other people may not see me

1487. other people may not know

1488. what's going on in my life

  1489. but this Jesus does

  1490. he knows

1491. and he really does care

  1492. and he's inviting me

  1493. he's inviting me

  1494. and saying

  1495. whoever you are

1496. I'll never turn you away

1497. you see the drawing power

  1498. of Jesus Christ

  1499. there is nothing

  1500. nothing

  1501. that can rival it

  1502. and so that's why

1503. the message of the cross

  1504. is the message

1505. that we need to keep

  1506. communicating

  1507. because it's

  1508. it's the message

1509. where hope is to be found

  1510. isn't it

1511. that all of the mess

  1512. that we've made

  1513. can be undone

1514. that all of the guilt

  1515. that we carry

  1516. can be lifted away

1517. and that all of the

  1518. all of the wandering

  1519. and rejection

1520. that we've had of God

  1521. can be transformed

1522. and we can be accepted

  1523. and it's all focused

1524. on the cross at Calvary

  1525. the cross that is

  1526. the message

  1527. that we share

  1528. is the message

  1529. that we give

  1530. it's the message

1531. that we don't graduate from

  1532. it's a message

  1533. we need to keep

  1534. coming back to

  1535. it is the message

  1536. that is the hope

  1537. of sinners

  1538. it is the message

  1539. that is the joy

  1540. of saints

  1541. it's the message

  1542. that is the study

  1543. of angels

  1544. it is the message

  1545. of Christ

  1546. and his willingness

  1547. to receive all

  1548. who will come

  1549. to him

  1550. who will look

1551. to what he has done

  1552. for them

  1553. and who will welcome

  1554. all who will look

  1555. to him

  1556. to know his salvation

  1557. to know his power

  1558. because when he is

  1559. lifted up

  1560. he will draw

  1561. all people

  1562. to himself

  1563. remember the context

  1564. the Greek people

  1565. came and want to

  1566. see Jesus

  1567. and what they're

  1568. learning is that

  1569. what they're going

  1570. to see of Jesus

  1571. is not what they

  1572. necessarily expect

  1573. to see of Jesus

  1574. because what

  1575. they need to see

  1576. of Jesus

  1577. is a Jesus

  1578. who is crucified

  1579. and yet who is

  1580. risen

  1581. and who is exalted

  1582. and so therefore

  1583. with these truths

  1584. in mind

  1585. what applications

  1586. do we have

  1587. for ourselves

  1588. this evening

  1589. two or three

  1590. and then we're done

  1591. first of all

  1592. for any of you

  1593. who tonight

  1594. are troubled

  1595. deeply troubled

  1596. maybe for different

  1597. reasons

  1598. but troubled

  1599. nonetheless

  1600. let me remind you

  1601. of a saviour

  1602. who can empathise

  1603. with you being

  1604. troubled

  1605. maybe some of you

  1606. are carrying

  1607. traumas

  1608. that are very deep

  1609. and very sore

  1610. let me remind you

  1611. of a saviour

  1612. who can empathise

  1613. with your traumas

  1614. and who can come

  1615. to a people

  1616. who are troubled

  1617. and who are traumatised

  1618. and who can say

  1619. to them

  1620. as he said

  1621. to his disciples

1622. in a couple of chapters

  1623. he said

  1624. don't let your hearts

  1625. be troubled

  1626. why?

1627. because of who he is

  1628. because he is God

1629. and he is the one

  1630. who understands

1631. and he is the one

  1632. who can help us

1633. and he is the one

  1634. who can deliver us

  1635. from our troubles

  1636. whatever they may be

  1637. he is the one

  1638. who can deliver us

  1639. from our troubles

1640. as we look to him

  1641. and for his people

  1642. who find themselves

  1643. in troubled days

  1644. he is the one

1645. who is going to enable us

  1646. in these troubles

  1647. to follow his pattern

  1648. his pattern

  1649. of bringing glory

  1650. to God

  1651. in these troubles

  1652. in the difficulties

  1653. perhaps with health

  1654. in the difficulties

  1655. perhaps with relationships

  1656. in the difficulties

  1657. perhaps at work

  1658. in the difficulties

  1659. perhaps in community

  1660. in congregation

  1661. whatever it might be

  1662. he is the one

1663. who is going to enable us

  1664. to bring glory

  1665. to our God

  1666. through the troubles

  1667. that we face

1668. you know one of the

  1669. greatest ways

  1670. that people see

  1671. the reality of faith

  1672. is when they know

  1673. somebody has a faith

  1674. and they see them

  1675. going through

  1676. really difficult times

  1677. and they see them

1678. holding on to that faith

  1679. that gives a credibility

  1680. to the gospel

  1681. in a way that

  1682. few other things do

  1683. and so

  1684. you may be troubled

  1685. this evening

  1686. there is one

  1687. who understands

  1688. and there is one

  1689. who cares

  1690. and there is one

  1691. who helps

  1692. and there is one

  1693. who can enable you

  1694. to follow his example

  1695. of bringing glory

  1696. to God

  1697. through these troubles

  1698. as you rest

  1699. in him

  1700. that only

  1701. can happen

  1702. however

  1703. as our eyes

  1704. are fixed

  1705. on Jesus

  1706. that can only happen

1707. as he has that place

  1708. in our perspective

  1709. that he really

  1710. ought to have

  1711. that can only happen

  1712. as we look

  1713. to the exalted Jesus

1714. and so we do so

  1715. ourselves

  1716. to remind ourselves

1717. if we want to know

  1718. what God is like

  1719. we look to Jesus

1720. if we want to know

  1721. what it is

  1722. to be human

  1723. we look to Jesus

1724. if we want to know

  1725. what genuine love is

  1726. we look to Jesus

  1727. and we keep

  1728. looking to Jesus

  1729. because looking

  1730. to the crucified

  1731. yet risen

  1732. ascended

  1733. saviour

  1734. who is returning

  1735. that is what's

  1736. going to enable us

  1737. to live the life

  1738. that we ought to

1739. to live as his people

1740. but for some of us

  1741. I know

  1742. it's time to actually

  1743. start looking

  1744. at this Jesus

  1745. isn't it

  1746. it's time to

  1747. to stop looking

  1748. elsewhere

  1749. and to start

  1750. looking to him

  1751. it's time to

  1752. stop delaying

  1753. any longer

  1754. because as Jesus

1755. goes on in this passage

  1756. the people

  1757. as is frequently

  1758. the case

  1759. in John's gospel

  1760. as he studied

  1761. the people

  1762. as they hear

  1763. what Jesus says

  1764. don't quite understand it

  1765. and Jesus

  1766. brings it round

1767. to the point of fact

  1768. that actually

  1769. there's a sense

  1770. of urgency

  1771. to listen to

1772. what he has to say

  1773. there's a sense

  1774. of urgency

  1775. because they have light

  1776. but they're only

  1777. going to have it

  1778. a little bit longer

  1779. and then after that

1780. it's going to be darkness

  1781. and then that's going

  1782. to be major difficulty

  1783. and so what Jesus

  1784. is saying to them

  1785. is that there's an

  1786. there's an urgency

1787. to listen to what he says

  1788. and what he's saying

  1789. to you

1790. is that there's an urgency

  1791. to listen

  1792. to his invitation

  1793. to live

  1794. because today

  1795. you have that invitation

  1796. you're here

  1797. however you're here

  1798. whether you're

  1799. this is your normal

  1800. whether you've been invited

1801. whether you've never been here

  1802. in your life before

  1803. you're here

1804. and he's brought you here

  1805. you have this light

  1806. but this light

  1807. is not guaranteed

  1808. to last any longer

1809. because this is a light

  1810. that needs to be

  1811. responded to now

1812. as you look to Jesus

  1813. and as you think

1814. why was he on that cross

1815. well he went to that cross

  1816. for me

1817. well how can I possibly

  1818. how can I possibly

  1819. live ignoring the fact

1820. he went to that cross

  1821. for me

  1822. but would he want

  1823. someone like me

  1824. would he want

  1825. someone like me

1826. with all of my messed up thinking

1827. and all of my past

1828. with all of my present

  1829. would he want

  1830. someone like me

1831. and again we go back

  1832. to the words of

  1833. John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

1834. that whoever comes to me

  1835. he says

  1836. I will never

  1837. turn you away

1838. you see we started off

  1839. talking about magnets

  1840. and the strongest magnet

  1841. in the world

  1842. and how Jesus

  1843. has greater

  1844. drawing power

  1845. but the thing about

  1846. Jesus is

  1847. like

  1848. every

  1849. magnet

  1850. there are those

  1851. who are drawn

  1852. and there are those

  1853. who are repelled

  1854. and the sad reality

  1855. is that

  1856. some of you

  1857. in here tonight

  1858. might be being

  1859. repelled

  1860. by Jesus

  1861. let me warn you

  1862. as lovingly

  1863. and as solemnly

  1864. as I can

  1865. that that is

  1866. the most dangerous

  1867. place

  1868. you can possibly

  1869. be in

  1870. because this is

  1871. the saviour

  1872. the only one

  1873. you need him

  1874. and he's come

  1875. for you

  1876. and he's offering

  1877. you tonight

  1878. life

  1879. life lived

  1880. to the full

  1881. here and now

  1882. and life

  1883. forevermore

  1884. with him

  1885. as you bow

  1886. the knee

  1887. before

  1888. King Jesus

  1889. why

  1890. because Jesus

  1891. said

  1892. that when I am

  1893. lifted from the earth

  1894. I will draw

  1895. all people

  1896. to myself

  1897. the invitation

  1898. is open

  1899. right now

  1900. to come to him

  1901. let's pray

  1902. Father we thank you

  1903. for

  1904. all that our saviour

  1905. was willing to do

1906. for all that our saviour

  1907. is currently doing

1908. and for all that our saviour

  1909. will yet do

  1910. for us

  1911. we pray that tonight

  1912. you would draw

  1913. to yourself

  1914. those who

  1915. do not have

  1916. a living trust

  1917. in Jesus

  1918. we pray that such

  1919. a connection

  1920. would be established

  1921. and we pray this

  1922. for your glory

  1923. we pray that you

  1924. would be glorified

1925. in the saving of sinners

  1926. we pray that there

  1927. would be rejoicing

  1928. among the angels

  1929. in heaven

  1930. even this evening

  1931. with sinners

  1932. repenting

  1933. and believing

  1934. and turning

  1935. and trusting

1936. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  1937. bless us we pray

1938. for we ask this all

  1939. in his name

  1940. Amen

  1941. we're going to

  1942. conclude

  1943. by singing

  1944. in Psalm

  1945. number 24

  1946. Psalm 24

  1947. on page

  1948. number 28

  1949. Psalm 24

  1950. on page 28

  1951. we're going to sing

  1952. from verse 7

  1953. down to

  1954. the end

  1955. of this

  1956. psalm

  1957. we are singing

  1958. of the king

  1959. of glory

  1960. we're singing

  1961. of our saviour

  1962. you ancient gates

  1963. lift up your heads

  1964. you doors

  1965. be opened wide

  1966. so may the king

  1967. of glory come

  1968. forever

  1969. to abide

  1970. and down to

  1971. verse 10

  1972. but who is this

  1973. exalted king

  1974. who can this

  1975. sovereign be

  1976. the Lord almighty

  1977. he is king

  1978. of glory

  1979. none but he

  1980. we're going to stand

  1981. as we praise God

  1982. you ancient gates

  1983. lift up your heads

1984. your doors be open wide

  1985. so may the king

  1986. of glory come

  1987. forever

  1988. forever

  1989. to the

  1990. mine

  1991. but who

  1992. is this

  1993. exalted

  1994. king

  1995. what

  1996. glorious

  1997. king

  1998. is he

  1999. it is

  2000. the Lord

  2001. of strength

  2002. and might

  2003. the Lord

  2004. of victory

  2005. it is

  2006. the Lord

  2007. of strength

  2008. and might

  2009. the Lord

  2010. of victory

  2011. you

  2012. ancient gates

  2013. lift up

  2014. your heads

2015. your doors be open wide

  2016. so may the king

  2017. of glory

  2018. come

  2019. forever

  2020. to the

  2021. light

  2022. but who

  2023. is this

  2024. exalted

  2025. king

  2026. who

  2027. can this

  2028. sovereign

  2029. be

  2030. the Lord

  2031. almighty

  2032. he is king

  2033. !

  2034. of glory

  2035. and might

  2036. be

  2037. the Lord

  2038. almighty

  2039. he is king

  2040. of glory

  2041. and might

  2042. be

  2043. alleluia

  2044. alleluia

  2045. alleluia

  2046. alleluia

  2047. alleluia

  2048. amen

  2049. amen

  2050. amen

  2051. amen

  2052. until the

  2053. Lord returns

  2054. calls us

  2055. home

  2056. now to him

  2057. is able to

  2058. keep you

  2059. from falling

  2060. and to

  2061. present you

  2062. blameless

  2063. before the

  2064. presence of

  2065. his glory

  2066. with great

  2067. joy

  2068. to the

  2069. only God

  2070. our saviour

2071. through Jesus Christ our Lord

2072. be glory, majesty, dominion and authority

2073. before all time, now and forevermore.

2074. And the people of God said, Amen.

  2075. Amen.
