  1. We can turn back to our reading in the book of Psalms, Psalm 18.

  2. We're going to look at the beginning of this, Psalm 1-3.

  3. Psalm 18, verse 1-3.

    Psalms 18:1–3

  4. I love you, O Lord, my strength.

  5. Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,

  6. my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,

  7. my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

  8. I call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised,

  9. and I am saved from my enemies.

  10. As I said this morning, we were thinking about coming away from a communion weekend,

  11. and this morning we were reflecting on that sense of the Lord being worthy of all our thanksgiving.

  12. In 2 Corinthians 9, verse 15, it's thanks be to God for that indescribable gift.

    2 Corinthians 9:15

  13. There's just no way that we can almost think of a word to describe the gift that God has given us in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  14. So he is worthy of all thanksgiving.

  15. And this evening we're going to think about the Lord and how worthy he is to be praised.

  16. And that's what we read there in verse 3.

  17. I called upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised.

  18. There's this sense of going on in worship of God.

  19. And you note at the beginning of the psalm, if you have a Bible,

  20. the ESV Bible in particular, it has a few words mentioning the context of the psalm before you come into verse 1.

  21. So it says there to the choir master, it's a psalm of David, the servant of the Lord,

  22. who addressed the words of the song to the Lord on the day when the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies

  23. and from the hand of Saul, he said, and then it goes into his song from verse 1,

  24. I love you, O Lord, my strength.

  25. So the context is there given to us of a day when David was delivered from all of his enemies.

  26. And you can read about that in 2 Samuel 22, where you have this song mentioned as well.

  27. And David has known victory over his enemies,

  28. a victory that maybe at one stage seemed impossible for him,

  29. as he saw his enemies all around him.

  30. And yet God has given him this glorious victory as he was running from Saul,

  31. as he was running from his enemies.

  32. He was in constant danger of death.

  33. But now he has been delivered from that.

  34. And he has this praise being offered up to God.

  35. And as we see there in verse 3, he is worthy to be praised,

  36. the God who has given him this victory.

  37. So this is David's song of victory.

  38. But in many ways we could say it is our song of victory as well,

  39. because God has given us this song for us to sing.

  40. And we can sing these words ourselves,

  41. and we can sing them maybe with the same meaning behind them as what David had.

  42. When we know the Lord, when we love the Lord,

  43. we recognize just how he is our strength,

  44. how he is all of these things to us,

  45. and how he has given us victory in this world as well.

  46. Because when God saves us, he gives us victory over our enemies.

  47. And we think of the greatest enemies that we have in this world as a people,

  48. the enemy of sin, the enemy of death,

  49. the enemy of a lost eternity.

  50. We have all of these enemies.

  51. And yet as we look to the Lord Jesus and the victory that he has won for us,

  52. we realize what he has saved us from,

  53. and that we are saved by his grace.

  54. And so we, therefore, can sing this song ourselves with that sense of victory

  55. and see that worthy to be praised is God.

  56. Worthy to be praised is the Lord.

  57. We read in the New Testament, 2 Timothy 3, verse 16,

    2 Timothy 3:16

  58. that all Scripture is breathed out by God.

  59. So God has given us his word through various writers,

  60. as you see throughout the Bible.

  61. And so here we have David writing this song.

  62. As we read in Timothy, we're seeing that he is inspired,

  63. he is moved by the Lord to write these words.

  64. And you can almost think, well, is this not then God praising himself?

  65. It's not this God giving words, boasting words to David to write about him.

  66. But God is not that way.

  67. God isn't like some leaders we might see in the world

  68. who want all the praise for themselves.

  69. So they write their own way of praising and their qualities

  70. and all that they have done,

  71. speaking about it all the time in that sense of,

  72. look at me and what I have done.

  73. God inspired David.

  74. He was moved by the Spirit to write these words.

  75. But David inspired his writing from his own experience.

  76. He is writing these words, having known God with him.

  77. God is the one who has brought him through and given him this victory.

  78. And so now he can see God as his Savior.

  79. And now he can express his thankfulness

  80. that he has brought him through all of this.

  81. And with thankfulness, he sees, as is often David's case,

  82. he expresses it in song.

  83. In song, David writes these words.

  84. And so verse 1 to 3, as we look at this psalm this evening,

  85. they show us David beginning his praise to God

  86. by expressing his love of God and what God has done for him.

  87. Then he proceeds to describe how much the Lord means to him

  88. by using different expressions there,

  89. especially in verse 2, of who God is for him.

  90. And as someone wrote, you could say he sees this as the Lord,

  91. the source of his strength, stability, safety, and salvation.

  92. All of these things come across in the way that David describes the Lord in verse 2.

  93. And then in verse 3, we see that God has proved himself reliable,

  94. that he can be depended upon, and so he is worthy to be praised.

  95. Worthy to be praised.

  96. We have that same kind of song ourselves.

  97. This evening we're going to sing this psalm at the end of our service.

  98. Will we be singing these words with that sense of,

  99. this is my song too, this is the same song as David had as my song,

  100. that I can say, I love the Lord.

  101. He is my strength.

  102. He is my rock.

  103. He is my deliverer.

  104. He is my refuge, my shield.

  105. All of these things.

  106. Can we sing that?

  107. Are we worshiping the Lord as we should,

  108. as he is worthy to be praised?

  109. One person said this,

  110. one of the great tragedies of the human spirit

  111. is to become a prisoner of ingratitude.

  112. For ingratitude shuts the human spirit up

  113. and the world lightened only by the self,

  114. which is no light at all.

  115. A spirit of, a prisoner of ingratitude.

  116. We're not thankful for what we have.

  117. And so the opposite is true of that.

  118. Gratitude then gives us light.

  119. And not light of self,

  120. but light as we see revealed by God through his word.

  121. And so we want to be a people who worship God as we should,

  122. that he is worthy to be praised in all things.

  123. And how then can we worship God?

  124. Well, that's what we see with David here.

  125. We see him worshiping, first of all, in verse 1,

  126. by delighting in God.

  127. He is delighting in God.

  128. He makes two declarations here in verse 1.

  129. He starts by first declaring his love for the Lord.

  130. I love you, O Lord.

  131. And then the second declaration is that absolute dependence upon the Lord as my strength.

  132. So from the outset of this psalm, he's indicating that as he lives his life here,

  133. these two great themes are what the manner in which he is living his life.

  134. They are constantly before him.

  135. And he's telling us this, that he finds his great delight in God.

  136. I love you, O Lord, my strength.

  137. Isn't it an amazing thing to be able to say,

  138. I love you, the Lord.

  139. I love you, my Lord.

  140. Psalm 116, which we sang together, has the expression of that in the psalm as well.

  141. I love the Lord because my voice and prayers heeded here.

  142. And you see it recurring again and again.

  143. But what kind of love is it?

  144. And are you able to say with David tonight,

  145. I love you, O Lord.

  146. Well, when you look at the kind of love it is,

  147. it's a love that is full of worship towards God.

  148. As we read in Matthew 28, in verse 9,

  149. when Jesus, the resurrected Jesus, met his disciples,

  150. what did they do with him?

  151. It says in verse 9,

  152. And behold, Jesus met them and said,

  153. Greetings.

  154. And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshipped him.

  155. They came up and took hold of his feet and worshipped him.

  156. There was this sense of just being in the presence of the risen Savior,

  157. that they could do nothing else but worship him,

  158. fall at his feet and worship him.

  159. It's the same as you see with Mary Magdalene.

  160. We read of it in Matthew.

  161. It doesn't go into the same details as it does in the Gospel of John.

  162. But when she encountered Jesus in the garden,

  163. John 20, verse 17,

    John 20:17

  164. Jesus said to her, he called her by name,

  165. Mary.

  166. She didn't realize who it was that was in front of him at first.

  167. She turned and said to him in Aramaic,

  168. Rabboni, which means teacher.

  169. And there was a sense of worship with her because Jesus goes on to say,

  170. Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father.

  171. So she has obviously taken hold of Jesus.

  172. She is clinging on to him,

  173. just like the disciples took hold of his feet and worshipped him.

  174. There is that sense of when we love the Lord,

  175. we are giving our worship to him by just coming before him,

  176. clinging on to him,

  177. depending on him.

  178. We recognize that if we love him,

  179. we only do so because he first loved us.

  180. And when our eyes are open to see this,

  181. what else can we do but just come

  182. and throw ourselves at his feet

  183. and just plead,

  184. I love you,

  185. O Lord.

  186. Because there is nowhere else to go.

  187. There is no one else who can give us

  188. that relationship that satisfies,

  189. that gives us hope,

  190. that gives us an eternity

  191. to look forward to.

  192. When we consider all the things

  193. that the Lord has done for us

  194. and his love towards us,

  195. our hearts should be filled

  196. with that sense of worship.

  197. Saying, I love you,

  198. O Lord.

  199. Do you,

  200. this evening,

  201. have that love for the Lord?

  202. Where your worship is just one,

  203. where you see,

  204. you can do nothing

  205. but throw yourself at his feet,

  206. cling to him,

  207. because there's nowhere else to go.

  208. As the disciple of old said,

  209. to whom else shall we go?

  210. For you alone are the words

  211. of eternal life.

  212. There's nowhere else to go.

  213. And the second declaration

  214. seen there in verse one is,

  215. I love you,

  216. O Lord,

  217. my strength.

  218. My strength.

  219. We're going on to see this

  220. in a moment in verse two as well,

  221. but nine times

  222. in these first two verses,

  223. David uses that personal word,

  224. my.

  225. My strength,

  226. he says here in verse one.

  227. My is often a word

  228. that children learn

  229. at a very young age

  230. when they're able

  231. to express themselves

  232. by telling others

  233. what belongs to them.

  234. My toy,

  235. my food,

  236. my room,

  237. my house.

  238. They learn these words

  239. so quickly.

  240. My,

  241. what belongs to me.

  242. And this is almost like

  243. just the childlike nature

  244. that we have

  245. where we're looking at

  246. what we think belongs

  247. to us.

  248. But here David has

  249. that childlike faith

  250. when he's expressing it

  251. in this way.

  252. The Lord is my strength.

  253. My strength.

  254. He's delighting in God.

  255. And we're going to just see

  256. this in a moment

  257. as we think of

  258. depending on God

  259. in verse two,

  260. the way we see

  261. him expressing it

  262. using this word,

  263. my.

  264. But just as before

  265. we go into verse two,

  266. ask yourself this again.

  267. Is God my strength?

  268. Can I say,

  269. can you say tonight

  270. that he is my strength?

  271. In other words,

  272. how are we living our lives?

  273. How are we going forward

  274. in this life?

  275. Are we living it

  276. depending on him

  277. as he is my strength

  278. because I love him?

  279. Or does he mean nothing?

  280. That we just go forward

  281. in our own strength?

  282. So the first aspect

  283. of this worship

  284. that we see with David

  285. is delighting in God.

  286. And we as a people

  287. are to be those

  288. who delight in God ourselves.

  289. Then we come into verse two

  290. and we see this dependence

  291. on God.

  292. Just read through this verse.

  293. The Lord is my rock

  294. and my fortress

  295. and my deliverer,

  296. my God,

  297. my rock

  298. in whom I take refuge,

  299. my shield

  300. and the horn of my salvation,

  301. my stronghold.

  302. My, my, my.

  303. He's repeating it constantly

  304. and using different words

  305. to describe this relationship

  306. that he has with God

  307. and this dependence on God.

  308. And when you pray with God,

  309. what kind of language

  310. do you use?

  311. Do you use these kinds of words

  312. as you come to him?

  313. This is a song,

  314. it's a psalm,

  315. but it can also be a prayer.

  316. Very often you can say that

  317. about the psalms,

  318. you can use them as a prayer.

  319. And it's a good thing for us

  320. to use God's word

  321. as we come to prayer,

  322. to read God's word

  323. before we pray

  324. and even to pray God's word

  325. as we do pray with God.

  326. And so is this the kind of language

  327. that you use

  328. as you come to God in prayer?

  329. Do you say,

  330. I love you, O Lord,

  331. my strength,

  332. my rock,

  333. my fortress,

  334. my deliverer,

  335. my God,

  336. my refuge,

  337. my shield,

  338. my horn,

  339. my stronghold.

  340. Do you use all of that language

  341. with God?

  342. Because it's a great way

  343. to come to him

  344. because it reminds us

  345. of just how dependent

  346. we are on him.

  347. And just to go through

  348. some of these words

  349. in verse 2

  350. and just think,

  351. well,

  352. how can they apply to us

  353. and our dependence on him?

  354. He uses the word,

  355. my rock,

  356. twice.

  357. The Lord is my rock.

  358. He uses it in the third line

  359. there as well,

  360. my God,

  361. my rock in whom I take refuge.

  362. And the word rock there

  363. just has behind it

  364. a security.

  365. It's to do with

  366. an immovable rock,

  367. something that is solid,

  368. something that is secure

  369. so that when everything else

  370. in the world

  371. is being thrown around,

  372. tossed around,

  373. when everything is in chaos,

  374. God remains the same

  375. and that he is stable.

  376. He is the place of security.

  377. So David here

  378. is reminding himself

  379. and reminding us

  380. that when it appears

  381. that the world

  382. is spinning out of control,

  383. that as a believer

  384. we can stand above it all

  385. and stand on the Lord,

  386. that he is my rock.

  387. It reminds us of

  388. another couple of psalms,

  389. Psalm 40,

  390. that we sing so often

  391. when we set our feet

  392. upon a rock,

  393. when we have that security

  394. as we come to trust

  395. in the Lord Jesus,

  396. that he is the rock

  397. of our salvation.

  398. We have it in Psalm 46

  399. as well,

  400. when God is a refuge

  401. and a strength.

  402. Verse 5 says,

  403. God is in the midst of us.

  404. She shall not be moved.

  405. God will help her

  406. when morning dawns.

  407. You have that security

  408. when the Lord

  409. is my rock.

  410. Someone put it like this,

  411. when we stand on him,

  412. we see our trials

  413. through his eyes.

  414. And even though

  415. the difficulties of life

  416. might break our hearts,

  417. they still cause our hearts

  418. to bow in worship.

  419. So that no matter

  420. what we are going through,

  421. David here is writing

  422. in a time of victory,

  423. but as we know so well,

  424. David had times

  425. of despair as well,

  426. but yet he was able

  427. to still say,

  428. the Lord is my rock.

  429. That is the hope

  430. that we can have ourselves.

  431. That as we love the Lord

  432. and see that he is my strength,

  433. he is my rock,

  434. the one who is immovable.

  435. Then he goes on

  436. to speak about God

  437. as his deliverer

  438. and his shield.

  439. God is my fortress

  440. and my deliverer

  441. and then later on

  442. he says my shield.

  443. And so deliverer

  444. and shield

  445. we could almost take together

  446. and again see

  447. how they apply to us.

  448. When trouble comes

  449. into our lives,

  450. when David has experienced

  451. this trouble,

  452. the Lord has been

  453. a shield to him

  454. and he has been

  455. a deliverer to him.

  456. And so David

  457. is able to see

  458. in the sense of deliverer,

  459. he is able to see

  460. what he has been

  461. brought through.

  462. He saw his enemies

  463. fall around him.

  464. He saw a victory won.

  465. He was able to see

  466. the evidence of this.

  467. God is my deliverer.

  468. But God as my shield

  469. reminds us too

  470. that there are things

  471. that we do not see

  472. that the Lord

  473. keeps from us.

  474. That as he is

  475. our shield,

  476. he protects us

  477. even at times

  478. when we are unaware

  479. of it.

  480. I'm sure we are not

  481. always aware

  482. of the way

  483. God has been with us

  484. day by day

  485. in our lives.

  486. Maybe eternity

  487. will reveal it for us,

  488. what he has kept us from.

  489. But you know,

  490. you could think

  491. of just situations

  492. where

  493. but for the grace

  494. of God

  495. something different

  496. might have happened.

  497. That God has been

  498. a shield to us,

  499. protecting us

  500. in a circumstance,

  501. taking us through things

  502. even as we didn't

  503. see them.

  504. And David is aware

  505. of that,

  506. that God has been

  507. his shield

  508. and also

  509. his deliverer.

  510. So there is

  511. a dependence

  512. on God.

  513. He is the one

  514. who rescues.

  515. He is the one

  516. who delivers

  517. from danger.

  518. And isn't that

  519. a great assurance

  520. to us?

  521. That as we put

  522. our trust in him

  523. he gives us

  524. that promise

  525. as well.

  526. Through faith

  527. he delivers us

  528. from the consequences

  529. of sin.

  530. We don't realize

  531. just now

  532. just what he is

  533. shielding us from.

  534. But we put our

  535. trust in him

  536. to protect us

  537. as our redeemer

  538. and our deliverer.

  539. And then he goes

  540. on to say

  541. my strength

  542. and the horn

  543. of my salvation.

  544. The horn

  545. of my salvation.

  546. The horn

  547. as it mentioned

  548. here was something

  549. in David's day

  550. that was a particular

  551. symbol of

  552. strength

  553. and conquest.

  554. The horn

  555. could be used

  556. to make a noise,

  557. a cry,

  558. a shout

  559. of victory.

  560. But it was also

  561. used in a way

  562. where the horn

  563. was a reminder

  564. of the abundance

  565. of God's goodness.

  566. Because at harvest time

  567. especially

  568. the horn

  569. would be filled

  570. to overflowing

  571. with the produce

  572. of the harvest.

  573. And it would be

  574. a symbol

  575. of an overflowing

  576. abundance

  577. of God's goodness.

  578. And so it has

  579. these two sides

  580. to it

  581. and he is

  582. the horn

  583. of my salvation.

  584. In other words

  585. we have this sense

  586. of rejoicing

  587. in God.

  588. That God

  589. gives us

  590. an abundance

  591. as we were

  592. thinking about

  593. this morning.

  594. Abounding

  595. in grace

  596. for example.

  597. That God

  598. gives us

  599. that

  600. in a way

  601. that we are

  602. able to rejoice

  603. in him.

  604. He is my strength.

  605. He is

  606. the horn

  607. of my salvation.

  608. He gives us

  609. all of these

  610. things.

  611. And so we too

  612. can see

  613. that the Lord

  614. blesses us

  615. with an abundance

  616. of good things.

  617. Then he goes on

  618. to say

  619. God is

  620. my fortress

  621. and my

  622. stronghold.

  623. A high tower

  624. is what this

  625. refers to.

  626. It's a place

  627. of security

  628. a place

  629. of safety

  630. for God's

  631. people.

  632. The stronghold

  633. the high tower

  634. was a place

  635. where a city

  636. would be

  637. defended from

  638. so that those

  639. in the stronghold

  640. would be looking

  641. out over the

  642. enemies and

  643. able to defend

  644. the city

  645. from there.

  646. It's a reminder

  647. to us that

  648. God sees

  649. all things.

  650. That he is

  651. over us

  652. in all things.

  653. That there's

  654. nothing out

  655. of his view,

  656. out of his

  657. vision.

  658. That God

  659. sees every

  660. situation

  661. that we are

  662. going through

  663. and that he

  664. is able

  665. to protect

  666. us from

  667. his stronghold.

  668. When the

  669. battle rages

  670. we can go

  671. to him.

  672. He is the

  673. one who is

  674. able to

  675. keep us,

  676. to protect

  677. us,

  678. to help

  679. us.

  680. And so as

  681. David says

  682. all of these

  683. things here

  684. in verse 2,

  685. when he's

  686. using that

  687. word my,

  688. he is reminding

  689. us just of

  690. the greatness

  691. of God.

  692. Who he is

  693. in all of

  694. these ways.

  695. My rock,

  696. my fortress,

  697. my deliverer,

  698. my God,

  699. my rock,

  700. my shield,

  701. my horn,

  702. my stronghold.

  703. They are

  704. all ways

  705. of expressing

  706. that dependence

  707. on God.

  708. But they are

  709. all ways

  710. that we

  711. can express

  712. our dependence

  713. on God

  714. as well.

  715. Because when

  716. we know God

  717. and we come

  718. to trust

  719. in the Lord

  720. Jesus,

  721. he is all

  722. of these

  723. things to

  724. us.

  725. A deliverer,

  726. a rock,

  727. a shield,

  728. salvation,

  729. a stronghold.

  730. Every aspect

  731. of this

  732. can be our

  733. song

  734. through faith

  735. in the Lord

  736. Jesus Christ

  737. as well.

  738. So then

  739. the final

  740. thing we

  741. see here

  742. is as we

  743. go into

  744. verse 3,

  745. worship

  746. leads us

  747. to a

  748. devotion

  749. to God.

  750. I call

  751. upon the

  752. Lord

  753. who is

  754. worthy

  755. to be

  756. praised

  757. and I

  758. am saved

  759. from my

  760. enemies.

  761. So David

  762. here is

  763. making

  764. a pledge.

  765. He is

  766. devoting

  767. himself

  768. to God.

  769. I call

  770. upon the

  771. Lord

  772. who is

  773. worthy

  774. to be

  775. praised.

  776. God

  777. is a

  778. God

  779. to

  780. worship.

  781. And when

  782. you think

  783. of David

  784. and all

  785. the situations

  786. that he

  787. has been

  788. through

  789. here,

  790. you would

  791. say that

  792. David would

  793. surely be

  794. able to

  795. say that

  796. there was

  797. a time

  798. when he

  799. thought the

  800. outcome

  801. would be

  802. different,

  803. when he

  804. thought the

  805. enemies would

  806. capture him,

  807. when he

  808. would be

  809. killed,

  810. when Saul

  811. would have

  812. him killed.

  813. But God

  814. has taken

  815. him through

  816. and God

  817. has proved

  818. to him

  819. that he

  820. can be

  821. dependent

  822. on.

  823. So David

  824. knew that

  825. if God

  826. could help

  827. him in

  828. these past

  829. days,

  830. he could

  831. help him

  832. in his

  833. future days

  834. as well.

  835. So that's

  836. what he is

  837. making clear

  838. here in

  839. verse 3,

  840. I call

  841. upon the

  842. Lord who

  843. is worthy

  844. to be

  845. praised and

  846. I am

  847. saved from

  848. my enemies.

  849. This is an

  850. ongoing

  851. salvation,

  852. that he

  853. has this

  854. trust in

  855. God.

  856. He is

  857. worshipping

  858. God.

  859. And the

  860. word

  861. worship

  862. itself,

  863. what's

  864. behind

  865. that?

  866. Well,

  867. the word

  868. worship

  869. is with

  870. this word

  871. worthy,

  872. worthship,

  873. the one

  874. who is

  875. worthy

  876. to be

  877. praised.

  878. And so

  879. he is

  880. showing

  881. himself to

  882. be on

  883. God's

  884. side,

  885. that he

  886. will

  887. trust in

  888. the Lord

  889. in all

  890. his days.

  891. So David

  892. knew the

  893. Lord was

  894. worthy to

  895. be praised

  896. because of

  897. the way

  898. he had

  899. brought him

  900. through.

  901. And in

  902. your life

  903. and my

  904. life,

  905. I'm sure

  906. there's

  907. been times

  908. as we

  909. looked ahead,

  910. as we

  911. looked forward

  912. in our

  913. lives,

  914. where all

  915. we could

  916. see was

  917. defeat.

  918. all we

  919. could see

  920. was there

  921. wasn't a

  922. way ahead

  923. for us.

  924. Everything

  925. seemed to

  926. weigh heavy

  927. upon us.

  928. All we

  929. could see

  930. was our

  931. unworthiness,

  932. our sin,

  933. and no way

  934. forward for

  935. ourselves.

  936. That is what

  937. David was

  938. seeing here

  939. at times in

  940. his own

  941. life.

  942. But yet he

  943. was brought

  944. through and

  945. so can we.

  946. that as

  947. we trust

  948. in the

  949. Lord,

  950. as we

  951. look to

  952. him,

  953. that there

  954. is that

  955. assurance

  956. that he

  957. is able

  958. to bring

  959. us through.

  960. And what

  961. a lesson

  962. there is

  963. in that

  964. for us.

  965. That as

  966. David learned

  967. to trust

  968. in God,

  969. so can

  970. we.

  971. That as

  972. David was

  973. protected,

  974. so will

  975. he protect

  976. us.

  977. As David

  978. was provided

  979. for,

  980. so he

  981. will provide

  982. for us.

  983. As he

  984. helped

  985. David,

  986. so he

  987. will help

  988. us.

  989. As he

  990. refreshed

  991. David,

  992. so he

  993. will

  994. refresh

  995. us.

  996. He can

  997. do all

  998. of these

  999. things

  1000. because he

  1001. is God

  1002. who is

  1003. able.

  1004. And he

  1005. is the

  1006. one who

  1007. is worthy

  1008. to be

  1009. praised.

  1010. Jim

  1011. Parker,

  1012. in one

  1013. of his

  1014. books,

  1015. he said

  1016. this about

  1017. worship.

  1018. This then

  1019. is worship

  1020. in its

  1021. largest sense.

  1022. And he

  1023. goes on to

  1024. describe it

  1025. in this

  1026. way.

  1027. Petition

  1028. as well

  1029. as praise.

  1030. Preaching

  1031. as well

  1032. as prayer.

  1033. Hearing

  1034. as well

  1035. as speaking.

  1036. Actions

  1037. as well

  1038. as words.

  1039. Obeying

  1040. as well

  1041. as offering.

  1042. Loving

  1043. people

  1044. as well

  1045. as loving

  1046. God.

  1047. So he

  1048. has all

  1049. these

  1050. aspects

  1051. of worship

  1052. that we

  1053. are to

  1054. have

  1055. ourselves.

  1056. But he

  1057. goes on

  1058. to say

  1059. this,

  1060. however,

  1061. the primary

  1062. acts of

  1063. worship

  1064. are those

  1065. which focus

  1066. on God

  1067. directly.

  1068. and we

  1069. must not

  1070. imagine

  1071. that work

  1072. for God

  1073. in the

  1074. world

  1075. is a

  1076. substitute

  1077. for direct

  1078. fellowship

  1079. with him

  1080. in praise

  1081. and prayer

  1082. and devotion.

  1083. So there

  1084. are important

  1085. things for us

  1086. to be doing

  1087. in this

  1088. world.

  1089. But there

  1090. is nothing

  1091. more important,

  1092. there is no

  1093. substitute,

  1094. as Jim

  1095. Packer

  1096. says here,

  1097. than direct

  1098. fellowship

  1099. with him

  1100. in praise

  1101. and prayer

  1102. and devotion.

  1103. And that

  1104. is what

  1105. David

  1106. is showing

  1107. here.

  1108. In everything

  1109. that he

  1110. did for

  1111. the Lord,

  1112. he sees

  1113. it is all

  1114. about worship.

  1115. There is no

  1116. substitute,

  1117. as David

  1118. is saying

  1119. here,

  1120. for this

  1121. fellowship,

  1122. this praise,

  1123. prayer,

  1124. and devotion

  1125. that this

  1126. psalm

  1127. shows to

  1128. us.

  1129. Is that

  1130. our worship

  1131. today?

  1132. Is that

  1133. the way

  1134. we are

  1135. living

  1136. our lives

  1137. today?

  1138. With that

  1139. praise,

  1140. prayer,

  1141. and devotion

  1142. to God,

  1143. the one

  1144. who is

  1145. worthy

  1146. to be

  1147. praised.

  1148. A little

  1149. boy had

  1150. been to

  1151. church,

  1152. and at

  1153. the end

  1154. of the

  1155. day,

  1156. at night,

  1157. as he

  1158. knelt

  1159. beside his

  1160. bedside,

  1161. to pray

  1162. to God.

  1163. This

  1164. was his

  1165. prayer.

  1166. Dear

  1167. God,

  1168. we had

  1169. a good

  1170. time in

  1171. church

  1172. today.

  1173. But I

  1174. wish you

  1175. had been

  1176. there.

  1177. Coming

  1178. to church

  1179. is not

  1180. about having

  1181. a good

  1182. time with

  1183. each other.

  1184. It's not

  1185. about coming

  1186. to see

  1187. the person

  1188. sitting beside

  1189. you or to

  1190. catch up

  1191. with others

  1192. around you.

  1193. It's about

  1194. recognizing

  1195. that God

  1196. is here

  1197. and that

  1198. we meet

  1199. with him,

  1200. the one

  1201. who is

  1202. worthy

  1203. of all

  1204. our

  1205. praise.

  1206. We are

  1207. so thankful

  1208. to God

  1209. for all

  1210. that he

  1211. does for

  1212. us.

  1213. He is

  1214. worthy

  1215. of our

  1216. thanksgiving.

  1217. And this

  1218. evening we

  1219. think of

  1220. the fact

  1221. that he

  1222. is worthy

  1223. of worship,

  1224. worthy

  1225. to be

  1226. praised.

  1227. So may

  1228. our hearts

  1229. praise him

  1230. tonight.

  1231. Praise him

  1232. with that

  1233. sense of

  1234. thanksgiving,

  1235. praise him

  1236. and recognizing

  1237. our delight

  1238. in him,

  1239. our dependence

  1240. on him

  1241. and our

  1242. ongoing

  1243. devotion

  1244. to him.

  1245. May we

  1246. be a

  1247. people

  1248. who have

  1249. that praise

  1250. and prayer

  1251. and devotion

  1252. with him

  1253. in that

  1254. relationship

  1255. where we

  1256. can come

  1257. and say

  1258. I love

  1259. you my

  1260. Lord,

  1261. my strength.

  1262. Let us

  1263. pray.

  1264. Lord,

  1265. our

  1266. gracious

  1267. God,

  1268. we do

  1269. thank you

  1270. for your

  1271. word again

  1272. that reminds

  1273. us of our

  1274. ongoing

  1275. dependence

  1276. of you.

  1277. And we

  1278. thank you

  1279. that you

  1280. are worthy

  1281. to be

  1282. praised.

  1283. And help

  1284. us,

  1285. Lord,

  1286. to come

  1287. and acknowledge

  1288. you in that

  1289. way,

  1290. that you

  1291. are one

  1292. we are

  1293. to worship

  1294. and you

  1295. alone,

  1296. so that

  1297. from the

  1298. outset of

  1299. our time

  1300. and as we

  1301. go from

  1302. here this

  1303. evening

  1304. into all

  1305. the week

  1306. ahead,

  1307. that whatever

  1308. we do

  1309. for you,

  1310. that we

  1311. recognize

  1312. that there

  1313. is no

  1314. substitute

  1315. for that

  1316. fellowship

  1317. with you

  1318. in praise

  1319. and prayer

  1320. and devotion.

  1321. Teach us

  1322. to pray,

  1323. teach us
