  1. And throughout the chapter Paul is emphasizing us towards unity and togetherness and also to move forward in our own faith.

  2. ! And he reminds us at the end to be renewed in the spirit of your minds and to be on the new self created after the likeness of God and through righteousness and holiness.

  3. And that word righteousness is what I really want to focus on this evening.

  4. Perhaps it's best summed up for us in 2 Corinthians 5 and verse 21 where we have that great transaction.

  5. For our sake he made, that's God made him, made Christ to be sin who knew no sin so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  6. I read the portion in John 17 at the beginning for a purpose.

  7. I believe it undergirds what I'd like to share with you tonight.

  8. And what it emphasizes is the love and mercy, compassion and security that all of us who are in Christ are blessed with.

  9. We are safe and we are protected and guarded and kept by our Lord because we are precious.

  10. We're precious in God's sight.

  11. And we are a gift from the Father to the Son.

  12. As we read there in verse 6 of John 17,

  13. Jesus Christ is praying for us continually and interceding for us every moment of our lives.

  14. I'm praying for them, we're told in verse 9 of that chapter.

  15. I'm not praying for the world, but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

  16. And we're also told that Jesus is glorified in us, in all his beloved people.

  17. We're told in verse 10,

  18. All mine are yours and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.

  19. And that's quite a lot to begin, even that short three verses that I read there.

  20. It's a lot for us to begin.

  21. And perhaps we don't think of these things enough.

  22. Especially when we consider the sin that's always about us.

  23. The sins that we commit, and yes, the sin that we just cannot shake off while we're in this life.

  24. And for a short while this evening, I'd like us to consider something that is deeply biblical,

  25. and I believe incredibly liberating for all of us, and it's this.

  26. And we're not sinners trying to become righteous.

  27. We are the righteousness of God in Christ.

  28. And this is a key concept of our faith.

  29. And I believe we really need to focus on that much more.

  30. Because until that settles properly into our hearts,

  31. peace in our daily struggles will always feel just out of reach.

  32. We are made righteous in God's eyes,

  33. not through our own works, because that's impossible.

  34. We just cannot do that.

  35. But it's through faith in Jesus Christ.

  36. So from that we understand that it's relation-based.

  37. It's because of a relationship with Jesus Christ.

  38. And it couldn't be any other way.

  39. And it's very true that many believers continue to call themselves sinners.

  40. And that's primarily because they are honest about their struggles.

  41. And now that's not a bad thing,

  42. because we certainly don't want to minimize grace or pretend that we never fail.

  43. So that's totally understandable.

  44. But the problem here is not humility.

  45. The problem is identity.

  46. When we repeatedly name ourselves by what Jesus has already dealt with,

  47. we actually quietly place ourselves back under a burden that he carried for us.

  48. We're much too prone to be looking inwards instead of looking upwards.

  49. And I believe it's true as islanders,

  50. for a lot of people on this island,

  51. we have a tendency to look upon the negative

  52. instead of resting in and enjoying the positive aspects of our lives.

  53. Let me give you a couple of examples.

  54. Perhaps one of them you'll know very well.

  55. The weather.

  56. And is it not true that

  57. whenever we may be enjoying a good spell of weather,

  58. we might say to someone something like,

  59. isn't this just a glorious spell of weather?

  60. It's so warm,

  61. and we've been getting the sun for so long now.

  62. And yet, so often, the answer comes from people,

  63. ah, yes, but I'm sure the rain isn't far away.

  64. That's very true, isn't it?

  65. It tends to be the way we look at things.

  66. And even when it comes to our faith,

  67. we're not exempt from these negative aspects.

  68. I've often been in conversation with other Christians

  69. and perhaps said something like,

  70. isn't it just amazing that here we are,

  71. the two of us,

  72. and the two of us are saved now.

  73. And too often I get the reply,

  74. I hope I am.

  75. Well, I don't understand that.

  76. I hope I am.

  77. And I don't believe it's God honouring either.

  78. But yet, at the end of the day,

  79. that's us, isn't it?

  80. That's just the way we are.

  81. Perhaps not just here in Lewis,

  82. but certainly a West Coast thing anyway.

  83. But I'd like to focus on this word righteous.

  84. And as I briefly looked at 2 Corinthians 5,

  85. we're told he was made sin

  86. so that we might be made righteous.

  87. He was condemned so that we might be justified.

  88. And his death was in place of our spiritual death.

  89. And this means that just as God imputed our sin,

  90. just as the Father imputed our sin and guilt to Christ,

  91. He made Him to be sin,

  92. so the Father also imputes the righteousness of Christ

  93. to all who believe in Him.

  94. Not only does the believer receive

  95. a right standing before God

  96. on the basis of his or her faith in Jesus,

  97. but Paul tells us that in Christ,

  98. the believer actually shares

  99. in the righteousness

  100. that characterises God himself.

  101. God regards or counts believers as forgiven

  102. and God declares and treats them as forgiven.

  103. because God the Father has imputed,

  104. or perhaps another word is attributed,

  105. God has attributed the believer's sin to Christ.

  106. And because God the Father

  107. likewise imputes Christ's righteousness

  108. to the believer.

  109. God the Father has not been able to do

  110. for the believer.

  111. with that,

  112. and with that thinking,

  113. I tend to think that we take the first part of that verse

  114. and keep it in our minds that,

  115. and of course it's not wrong,

  116. because Jesus was made to be sin for us,

  117. but also the fact that,

  118. that we are now made righteous

  119. in the sight of God

  120. is so important

  121. and perhaps something

  122. that we don't think of

  123. as often as perhaps we ought to.

  124. Every believer

  125. is a reflection

  126. of God's own image in Christ.

  127. and that is,

  128. that's the express image

  129. of his person.

  130. God sees

  131. a reflection

  132. of himself

  133. in every believer

  134. in Christ

  135. and through Christ.

  136. And we need to really

  137. grasp hold of that.

  138. And that is that

  139. every time God looks at us

  140. individually

  141. as believers,

  142. he sees a reflection

  143. of himself

  144. in us

  145. in Christ.

  146. And we have a special place

  147. in the heart of God.

  148. This is a perfect

  149. God-given righteousness.

  150. And it is that

  151. and that alone

  152. that enables

  153. every believer

  154. to go into the presence

  155. of a holy God

  156. because we are made righteous,

  157. our sins are forgiven,

  158. we are made righteous

  159. in Christ

  160. and we are now enabled

  161. to go into the presence

  162. of a holy God.

  163. And so we need to be

  164. very clear

  165. and Paul writes plainly,

  166. you know,

  167. scripture doesn't define

  168. believers

  169. by what they once were.

  170. And notice the exchange

  171. that goes on here,

  172. this great transaction,

  173. Jesus did not merely

  174. forgive sin,

  175. he became sin

  176. for us.

  177. And we did not merely

  178. get a clean slate

  179. as it were

  180. because of that.

  181. we also became righteous,

  182. we were made righteous

  183. immediately

  184. in the sight of God.

  185. And this is not

  186. poetic language,

  187. this is covenant truth.

  188. Because yes,

  189. you and I,

  190. we still stumble,

  191. we stumble in the flesh

  192. and yet growth

  193. is ongoing.

  194. But it's not about

  195. our failures

  196. in this life.

  197. we're always going

  198. to fall in some way

  199. in our lives

  200. as Christians.

  201. We're always going

  202. to stumble.

  203. But it's about

  204. repenting

  205. of that sin

  206. which we are now

  207. led to do

  208. as believers,

  209. led by the Spirit

  210. to do.

  211. It's about repenting

  212. and it's about

  213. picking ourselves

  214. up again

  215. and it's about

  216. looking to Jesus

  217. and it's like

  218. shaking the dust

  219. off us

  220. looking to the

  221. empty cross now,

  222. looking to our

  223. resurrected Lord

  224. and moving on.

  225. Because we have

  226. to keep going

  227. on this walk

  228. or this race

  229. as Scripture

  230. often puts us

  231. to run

  232. this race.

  233. I mentioned

  234. the word identity

  235. and this is what

  236. it's all about

  237. being

  238. a child of God

  239. and a reflection

  240. of God's image

  241. and the righteousness

  242. of Christ.

  243. Our identity

  244. is not built

  245. on our washed moments

  246. but it's built

  247. on Christ's

  248. finished work.

  249. And

  250. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  251. chapter 6

  252. and verse 11

  253. that tells us

  254. you were washed,

  255. you were sanctified,

  256. you were justified

  257. in the name

  258. of the Lord Jesus.

  259. But notice

  260. that is all

  261. past tense.

  262. you were washed,

  263. you were sanctified,

  264. you were justified.

  265. Something

  266. that has

  267. already

  268. been done

  269. for us.

  270. And living

  271. with the mindset

  272. of

  273. I'm just

  274. a sinner

  275. that can

  276. very easily

  277. trap us

  278. in cycles

  279. of shame

  280. and

  281. in cycles

  282. of fear

  283. and self-focus

  284. particularly

  285. because

  286. what that does

  287. is it very subtly

  288. teaches us

  289. to look inwards

  290. instead of upwards.

  291. But the gospel

  292. calls us

  293. to a different

  294. posture

  295. and

  296. Colossians

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  297. chapter 2

  298. and verse 10

  299. reminds us

  300. of these words

  301. and you

  302. have been

  303. filled

  304. in him.

  305. We're not

  306. lacking

  307. righteousness.

  308. We're not

  309. missing

  310. something

  311. essential.

  312. We are

  313. filled

  314. in Christ.

  315. So much

  316. to think

  317. about

  318. with these

  319. words.

  320. this truth

  321. is not

  322. meant to

  323. produce

  324. pride in us.

  325. It produces

  326. rest.

  327. And when we

  328. truly

  329. understand

  330. that we

  331. are righteous

  332. in Christ

  333. then

  334. our obedience

  335. it stops

  336. being driven

  337. by fear

  338. and it

  339. really does

  340. start flowing

  341. from love.

  342. And we

  343. start living

  344. from the

  345. security

  346. of it

  347. because we

  348. know

  349. that we

  350. are safe

  351. in Christ.

  352. The word

  353. tells us

  354. so.

  355. And just

  356. as John

  357. reminds us

  358. in his epistle

  359. in 1 John

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  360. chapter 4

  361. and verse 13

  362. he says

  363. by this

  364. we know

  365. that we

  366. abide in

  367. him

  368. and he

  369. in us

  370. because he

  371. has given

  372. us

  373. of his

  374. spirit.

  375. God's

  376. own

  377. spirit

  378. dwelling

  379. within us

  380. and leading

  381. and guiding

  382. us

  383. each step

  384. of our way

  385. in this

  386. world.

  387. And God's

  388. presence in

  389. us

  390. is certainly

  391. not based

  392. on our

  393. performance

  394. it's based

  395. on his

  396. promise.

  397. And that's

  398. a promise

  399. that can

  400. never ever

  401. be broken.

  402. And it's

  403. just as

  404. Calumura

  405. spoke of

  406. last Sunday

  407. in his

  408. sermon

  409. that we

  410. have been

  411. given an

  412. inexpressible

  413. gift

  414. from God

  415. himself.

  416. a gift

  417. that is

  418. full of

  419. joy

  420. that joy

  421. that we're

  422. told that

  423. in and of

  424. itself is

  425. inexpressible

  426. and full

  427. of glory.

  428. And

  429. just as

  430. with the

  431. gift of

  432. God's

  433. love

  434. that is

  435. now shed

  436. abroad

  437. in our

  438. hearts

  439. and we

  440. now also

  441. experience

  442. the peace

  443. of God

  444. that our

  445. scripture

  446. says

  447. passes

  448. all

  449. understanding

  450. and yet

  451. it is so

  452. deep within

  453. us

  454. and so

  455. foundational

  456. with regard

  457. to our

  458. faith

  459. in Christ.

  460. Progress

  461. happens

  462. when

  463. our

  464. perspective

  465. with regard

  466. to our

  467. faith

  468. shifts

  469. from

  470. I'm

  471. constantly

  472. falling

  473. short

  474. and I'm

  475. sure

  476. so many

  477. of us

  478. are guilty

  479. in saying

  480. that and

  481. I'm no

  482. different

  483. but it

  484. needs to

  485. shift to

  486. I am

  487. learning

  488. to live

  489. out

  490. who I

  491. already

  492. am

  493. in

  494. Christ

  495. and we

  496. learn that

  497. as we

  498. grow and

  499. grace

  500. through

  501. what

  502. the

  503. Thessalonians

  504. call the

  505. sanctification

  506. process

  507. because

  508. growth

  509. does not

  510. come from

  511. shame

  512. it comes

  513. from

  514. truth

  515. and the

  516. truth is

  517. that

  518. Jesus

  519. did not

  520. save

  521. sinners

  522. and just

  523. leave them

  524. that way

  525. he made

  526. every one

  527. of us

  528. sons and

  529. daughters

  530. clothed

  531. in his

  532. righteousness

  533. so when

  534. we fall

  535. we don't

  536. say

  537. this proves

  538. I am a

  539. sinner

  540. we see

  541. this does

  542. not align

  543. with who

  544. I am

  545. in Christ

  546. and that

  547. is a huge

  548. difference

  549. in these

  550. words

  551. one keeps

  552. us stuck

  553. exactly

  554. where we

  555. are

  556. and the

  557. other

  558. invites

  559. continued

  560. transformation

  561. in our

  562. lives

  563. we read

  564. there in

  565. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  566. chapter 4

  567. in verse

  568. 24 it

  569. tells us

  570. put on

  571. the new

  572. self

  573. created

  574. after the

  575. likeness

  576. of God

  577. and through

  578. righteousness

  579. and holiness

  580. and we're

  581. not creating

  582. something new

  583. we are

  584. putting on

  585. we're not

  586. sinners

  587. sorry

  588. we are

  589. putting on

  590. what already

  591. belongs to

  592. us

  593. it's been

  594. gifted to

  595. us

  596. and

  597. this is

  598. our truth

  599. that really

  600. ought to

  601. bring

  602. peace to

  603. our hearts

  604. tonight

  605. and we

  606. need to

  607. understand

  608. this

  609. that

  610. God

  611. is not

  612. disappointed

  613. in us

  614. he's not

  615. surprised

  616. by your

  617. weakness

  618. he's not

  619. withholding

  620. love

  621. until we

  622. get it

  623. right

  624. that's

  625. not the

  626. way

  627. God

  628. is for

  629. us

  630. until we

  631. start getting

  632. everything

  633. together

  634. but the

  635. way God

  636. sees us

  637. as righteous

  638. and accepted

  639. and secure

  640. we're not

  641. sinners

  642. trying to reach

  643. God

  644. but we are

  645. the righteousness

  646. of God

  647. and Christ

  648. learning

  649. to walk

  650. in grace

  651. or by grace

  652. day by day

  653. and surely

  654. that for ourselves

  655. ought to be

  656. a great comfort

  657. a great encouragement

  658. to our souls

  659. that our Lord is with us

  660. every single step

  661. walking with us

  662. in our walk

  663. day by day

  664. I read something

  665. quite recently

  666. and it's

  667. it's the words

  668. of a song

  669. that has been

  670. feeling right

  671. and I just want

  672. to just

  673. read a

  674. very small part

  675. of it for you

  676. it says

  677. do you know

  678. what God

  679. did for me

  680. he broke

  681. my chains

  682. and set me

  683. free

  684. he pulled

  685. my heart

  686. from misery

  687. mercy

  688. found me

  689. right there

  690. on my knees

  691. he washed

  692. my sins

  693. in Calvary's

  694. stream

  695. gave me life

  696. where death

  697. had been

  698. he took

  699. my shame

  700. he took

  701. my fear

  702. and now

  703. I stand

  704. redeemed

  705. and clean

  706. it's about us

  707. adopting

  708. a really

  709. positive attitude

  710. about our

  711. Christianity

  712. and about our

  713. faith

  714. and to

  715. remember

  716. especially

  717. our identity

  718. which is in

  719. Christ Jesus

  720. we are seen

  721. as being

  722. perfect

  723. righteous

  724. and holy

  725. in Christ

  726. we make

  727. mistakes here

  728. but he is

  729. with us

  730. every step

  731. of the way

  732. building us

  733. up

  734. slowly

  735. but surely

  736. as we go

  737. on in this

  738. life

  739. we may not

  740. see it

  741. we may not

  742. have that

  743. awareness

  744. of it

  745. but he is

  746. building us

  747. up

  748. and he is

  749. making us

  750. more Christ

  751. like

  752. as we go

  753. on in our

  754. lives

  755. until that

  756. day

  757. when we

  758. will be

  759. taken home

  760. to be with

  761. God

  762. and we

  763. will fully

  764. realise

  765. then

  766. and experience

  767. this perfect

  768. righteousness

  769. in every

  770. aspect

  771. of our

  772. being

  773. throughout the

  774. endless ages

  775. of eternity

  776. eternity

  777. until that

  778. day

  779. let's keep

  780. looking upwards

  781. rather than

  782. inwards

  783. let's pray

  784. father we

  785. just thank you

  786. tonight

  787. for all the

  788. blessings

  789. that we

  790. receive from

  791. you

  792. we thank

  793. you for

  794. we thank

  795. you for the

  796. preciousness

  797. of this

  798. life that we

  799. have in

  800. Christ

  801. we thank

  802. you father

  803. for everything

  804. you do for

  805. us day

  806. day by

  807. day

  808. because we

  809. know that

  810. we're not

  811. we're not

  812. a servant

  813. of even

  814. the least

  815. of your

  816. mercies

  817. and yet

  818. we just

  819. cannot but

  820. gasp in awe

  821. and wonder

  822. at your love

  823. and your

  824. mercy

  825. and your

  826. long suffering

  827. towards us

  828. help us

  829. truly to

  830. focus on

  831. your word

  832. and help

  833. us truly

  834. to focus

  835. on this

  836. great gift

  837. of righteousness

  838. that you

  839. have bestowed

  840. upon each

  841. one of your

  842. own people

  843. it's hard

  844. for us to

  845. understand

  846. that we

  847. are seen

  848. as being

  849. perfectly

  850. pure and

  851. holy

  852. in your

  853. sight

  854. but we

  855. acknowledge

  856. with

  857. thankfulness

  858. Christ's

  859. finished work

  860. at Calvary

  861. for his

  862. death

  863. and for

  864. his

  865. resurrection

  866. and for

  867. his

  868. ascension

  869. Lord

  870. and we

  871. we pray

  872. to be kept

  873. every single

  874. day

  875. keep us

  876. Lord

  877. day by

  878. day

  879. until

  880. our Lord

  881. surely

  882. comes again

  883. we ask

  884. these things

  885. in Jesus

  886. name and

  887. for his

  888. sake

  889. Amen
