  1. Well, let's return to Paul's letter to the Philippians.

  2. !

  3. Let's bow in prayer before we turn to the word.

  4. Father in heaven, we ask and pray this evening that you would bless us and encourage us in the truth this night.

  5. Lord, it's a great privilege that we have to be able to open the Bible in front of us.

  6. And we need the light of your presence to guide us into what we need to see here.

  7. We dare not, Lord, progress, in fact, without that light.

  8. And so may the Spirit guide us to the things of truth.

  9. And may we find blessing and joy in what we discover.

  10. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  11. Amen.

  12. You know, if there was two themes that you would say flow out of the letter to the Philippians,

  13. we've kind of touched on them both in all the different parts of the letter that we've read tonight.

  14. The obvious one is Paul's joy when he thinks about the church in Philippi.

  15. And in some ways, that's very often a rebuke to us because when we, I think, so often think about the church on earth,

  16. very often we think about all of the problems, we think about all of the things that make it difficult.

  17. And joy is maybe rarely the first word that would spring to mind when we think about the church.

  18. But for Paul, joy was one of the great reasons for, or one of the great things of his thought and state

  19. when he was reflecting on the church and thought of them.

  20. Connected to that is the reason for Paul's joy.

  21. And that again runs through this letter really clearly.

  22. It's not as clear in English actually when you're reading it, but if you're reading it in Greek,

  23. you would see it immediately because the same word crops up time and again,

  24. although it's translated in three different ways in the passages we've read.

  25. And that is the fellowship of the church.

  26. The partnership of the church.

  27. The way in which the church share together in some experiences.

  28. And my thinking tonight is to reflect a little bit on this.

  29. The way in which God has ordained for the church to have an experience of partnership or fellowship in its life.

  30. And this theology, it runs actually throughout the whole of the Bible.

  31. It goes back to the very beginning to creation when God created Adam.

  32. Adam, he said it's not good for Adam to be alone.

  33. And he created a partner for him.

  34. Someone who would be alongside him.

  35. And who would fulfill a...

  36. In fact, I'm not even hesitant to say it, but it's a divine purpose.

  37. It is a purpose of God's own character that the wife that has provided for Adam is there to correspond to him

  38. and to work with him and to serve together in their lives as a whole.

  39. And that design for fellowship and the core of what it means to be human

  40. is actually reflective of the character and nature of God himself.

  41. God is...

  42. You know, the God we worship is not a...

  43. Is not a monad.

  44. It's not the same God as Islam worships.

  45. The God of Islam is alone.

  46. There is only one God.

  47. He has no son.

  48. He has his prophets.

  49. He has his servants.

  50. He has creatures that do his bidding.

  51. But in Islam, God is not three persons.

  52. And our God is three persons.

  53. From before the foundation of the world, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

  54. have entered into a partnership for the work of salvation.

  55. They've entered into a partnership and a sharing in the work of the atonement.

  56. They work in partnership in the work of creation.

  57. They've worked in partnership in the work of revelation.

  58. There is even a partnership of the Trinity in the way in which we pray

  59. as followers of Jesus Christ.

  60. And so this partnership, this sharing of work together,

  61. is reflective of the character of God himself.

  62. And it's so dangerous for us if we get into a habit of thinking about the Christian life

  63. where we can cut ourselves off or put ourselves into positions

  64. where we are isolated and alone.

  65. We need partnership.

  66. And we need that at a deep level, as we'll see,

  67. in some of the ways in which this works out.

  68. Obviously, there's a great danger as well.

  69. Human partnerships are abused.

  70. Human partnerships have been abused from the very beginning.

  71. This morning, we were thinking about Noah.

  72. It is interesting.

  73. Just after the story of Noah comes the story of the Tower of Babel

  74. where a group of humans come together and they say,

  75. let us build a tower that we can bring God down to us.

  76. And there is a great wickedness in the scheme of the people of Babel.

  77. And God confounds that scheme and brings a judgment upon them

  78. of dividing up the people into languages and groups

  79. that scatter over the face of the earth.

  80. And so sometimes human sin takes the good things that God has made

  81. and corrupts them and pollutes them for our own purposes.

  82. So Paul uses this idea of partnership, as I say, three times in the letter to the Philippians.

  83. The first of these, we've read it just this moment, in fact, in verse 5 of chapter 1,

  84. where Paul says that,

  85. because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,

  86. I have been able to pray with joy.

  87. Because of your partnership in the gospel,

  88. I have been able to pray with joy.

  89. The reason for Paul's joy is because they've participated with him

  90. in some of the work of the gospel.

  91. The work of the gospel is itself that profound work of God himself,

  92. the bringing of good news into the experience of men and women in this world.

  93. And Paul says that you have partnered with me in that work.

  94. It's been a missionary endeavor

  95. that goes on in the life and the experience of the church.

  96. And Paul says of the Philippians,

  97. it's been my experience of you that this has been the case since the very beginning.

  98. Now, the beginning of the story of the Philippians is in the book of Acts.

  99. And you can read there about how in the book of Acts,

  100. Paul went on the Jewish Sabbath to a riverside outside the city

  101. to a place where a group of mostly women were meeting for prayer.

  102. And there he met, among others, Lydia,

  103. whose heart God opened with the gospel.

  104. And from that day forward, Paul has said,

  105. the character of the Philippian church has been one that has shared in,

  106. shouldered with him, this work of the gospel.

  107. So this is a church where from the very beginning of their story

  108. and consistently right the way through it,

  109. they've had a very clear purpose.

  110. They've had a clear sense of their identity.

  111. They've bought into the idea that they are makers of disciples,

  112. that they are engaged in the work of bringing the good news

  113. into the lives of men and women,

  114. and they have been blessed and are continuing to be a blessing

  115. in this great work.

  116. That's one of these things that we should think about

  117. for ourselves, isn't it?

  118. As we think about our identity as a congregation,

  119. as we think about what we are about,

  120. what we're for,

  121. as we think about it in terms of our families,

  122. because I hope that we would aspire to have families

  123. as part of the life of our congregation,

  124. what are our families for?

  125. What are our homes for?

  126. What are our resources for?

  127. What has God blessed us with in our lives

  128. that we can use for his glory?

  129. And how do we do this?

  130. And the answer of it ought to come back

  131. to this idea of partnership in the gospel.

  132. That is the good news of Jesus.

  133. The good spiel.

  134. The good story that's there to be told.

  135. And that is the story of Jesus.

  136. Of the Redeemer's coming.

  137. Of his life in this world.

  138. His ministry.

  139. But culminating, as Paul talks about,

  140. in that trajectory that takes him to the cross.

  141. Where he empties himself.

  142. Taking on the form of a servant

  143. and subjects himself even to the point of death itself.

  144. That is the good news tonight.

  145. That is there for each one of us.

  146. That is the good news that we are invited into.

  147. When Calvin wrote about this in this passage,

  148. he says,

  149. We know how rare an excellence it is

  150. to follow God immediately upon his calling us

  151. and also to persevere steadily unto the end.

  152. For many are slow and backward to obey,

  153. while there are still more that fall short

  154. through fickleness or inconsistency.

  155. And Paul says,

  156. Here is a church in Philippi

  157. that has not been inconsistent.

  158. Here is a church in Philippi

  159. that has not been fickle

  160. in its support and unwavering care

  161. for the lost around about them.

  162. This is a church that remembers what it's for.

  163. And sadly, in the New Testament,

  164. it's pretty clear that that's not always the case.

  165. It's possible for churches to lose sight of that

  166. somewhere along the way,

  167. to stray from that calling.

  168. But Paul is reminded of the Philippians,

  169. of their partnership in the gospel

  170. since the day of Lydia's conversion.

  171. And so we should be bold

  172. when we think about what we want as a church,

  173. especially as we move towards calling a pastor

  174. and how foundational that will be

  175. to the life of this church.

  176. It's so important in the character of the church that we have.

  177. What do we want?

  178. A pastor who will lead us in the word

  179. and who will lead us in the work of the gospel,

  180. who will create and spurn on, as Paul did,

  181. a partnership in the gospel

  182. in our midst as a church.

  183. And our prayer, maybe just now as well,

  184. as we think about that forthcoming vacancy meeting

  185. and as we think about the process that has to be followed,

  186. our prayer should be for a pastor

  187. who himself will be committed to that work of the gospel

  188. and who will see it flourish in this place.

  189. So there is that first element of this partnership,

  190. that they are partners in the work of the gospel.

  191. But then if you turn over the page

  192. to Philippians chapter two, verse one,

  193. and we read there, so if there is any encouragement in Christ,

  194. any comfort from love,

  195. any participation in the spirit,

  196. any affection and sympathy,

  197. complete my joy by being of the same mind,

  198. having the same love,

  199. being in full accord and of one mind.

  200. So Paul is saying there

  201. that there are certain things

  202. that flow from the work of the gospel.

  203. Flowing from the work of the gospel,

  204. there is an encouragement in Christ,

  205. that is a comfort from love,

  206. the love of God that is shown to us in Christ Jesus,

  207. that is a participation.

  208. That same word is used for participation there.

  209. So in chapter one,

  210. he's talked about their partnership in the gospel.

  211. Now he talks about their participation in the spirit,

  212. and it's the same word in Greek.

  213. So there is this working of God

  214. in the lives of these Christians in Philippi,

  215. which leads to Paul having a completed joy

  216. as they express a unity

  217. and a commitment and a love towards one another

  218. that overflows from their experience of the gospel.

  219. And again, the notion here is that Paul is rejoicing.

  220. He says, complete my joy.

  221. So there is an experience of joy already.

  222. And Paul is saying he wants that experience of joy

  223. that he's already had

  224. when he thinks about the Philippian church.

  225. He wants that to just overflow and grow

  226. as he remembers them

  227. and as he hears about them

  228. and as he hears of the work of God among them.

  229. And he says, this comes from the Holy Spirit.

  230. This is the work of God, the Spirit,

  231. in our lives.

  232. And the result of it is that the church in Philippi

  233. will have this thing he calls a one-mindedness,

  234. that they would share a sense of duty

  235. and purpose and direction.

  236. But more than that,

  237. that they would share a sense of love

  238. and compassion for one another,

  239. that they would minister to one another

  240. out of their needs

  241. and in their times of sorrow and sadness,

  242. that they would experience this overflow

  243. of the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

  244. It's an astonishing thing.

  245. And he says, this thing,

  246. this one-mindedness,

  247. is in fact the mind of Christ.

  248. So he says, I want you to have this humility

  249. that counts others more significant than yourselves.

  250. Let each one of you look not only on his own interests,

  251. but on the interests of others.

  252. Have this mind among yourselves,

  253. which is yours in Christ Jesus.

  254. And so the character of the church in Philippi,

  255. Paul is saying,

  256. is one that comes about

  257. because they are conformed to the likeness of Jesus.

  258. So the roughness,

  259. if you can think of it this way,

  260. the roughness of their character,

  261. perhaps it's their short-temperedness,

  262. perhaps it's their,

  263. perhaps it's their,

  264. maybe it's times of greed,

  265. of self-centeredness,

  266. of wanting things their own way,

  267. of insisting on their desires.

  268. And sometimes these desires

  269. might not be wrong things,

  270. but insisting on them nonetheless.

  271. And Paul says,

  272. what he wants them to change to

  273. is away from that way of thinking

  274. about their lives

  275. and their purpose in this world

  276. to thinking like Christ.

  277. So he wants them to think like Jesus,

  278. who he goes on to explain

  279. in this really profound passage

  280. about the self-emptying of Jesus,

  281. the way he takes on the form of a servant

  282. and empties himself,

  283. becoming obedient to the point of death

  284. and suffering in this world.

  285. And he says,

  286. that's the mind I want you to have.

  287. I want you to have a mind

  288. that is like Christ

  289. and that you are willing to suffer loss

  290. for the good and the blessing

  291. of your brothers and sisters.

  292. I don't want you to insist on your own way.

  293. I want you to serve them.

  294. And the prime example he uses of that

  295. is Jesus,

  296. who left the throne room of heaven

  297. and came into this world

  298. and who took on himself

  299. the form of a servant.

  300. He didn't come as a prince in a palace.

  301. He didn't come as a king ruling armies.

  302. He didn't come as a mighty general

  303. exerting his will

  304. and forcing people to conform to his way.

  305. He came as the Messiah.

  306. Messiah,

  307. who laid down his life for others,

  308. who poured himself out

  309. in ministry and in care

  310. for the lost people around him

  311. and the profound needs

  312. that he saw in their lives

  313. and ultimately gave his life

  314. as a sacrifice for many

  315. at the cross.

  316. And Paul says,

  317. a church

  318. that is characterized

  319. by partnership,

  320. a church that is characterized

  321. by this Greek word

  322. koinonia,

  323. is a church that has

  324. the mind of Christ

  325. where people outdo themselves,

  326. one another,

  327. to minister to the needs

  328. of those around them.

  329. And what's fascinating

  330. is Paul says,

  331. you can't do that yourself.

  332. I want us to stop

  333. and think about that

  334. just now for a moment.

  335. We can't do that ourselves.

  336. There is no amount

  337. of exertion

  338. that we can have,

  339. there is no amount

  340. of effort

  341. that we can put in

  342. that is going to change

  343. our fundamental character.

  344. The truth is,

  345. if you are not

  346. a loving person,

  347. you will never be

  348. a loving person.

  349. And no amount

  350. of hypnosis

  351. and no amount

  352. of self-help

  353. and no amount

  354. of therapy

  355. is going to change that.

  356. The world's tools

  357. do not change

  358. the essential character

  359. of sinners.

  360. But someone does.

  361. And that's why Paul says,

  362. I want you to have

  363. this participation,

  364. this partnership

  365. with the Holy Spirit.

  366. His prayer

  367. for the Philippian church

  368. is that they will move

  369. as the Spirit

  370. leads them.

  371. That they'll go on

  372. as the Spirit

  373. carries them

  374. and takes them forward.

  375. There are wonderful illustrations

  376. of this once

  377. from John Piper.

  378. He was preaching

  379. and he was saying

  380. this participation

  381. in the Holy Spirit

  382. is like two

  383. military jets.

  384. You see them

  385. at air shows

  386. where you maybe see

  387. the red arrows

  388. or formation flying

  389. they call it.

  390. And it's truly remarkable

  391. because the precision

  392. with which these

  393. hypersonic jets move

  394. is just incredible

  395. to watch.

  396. One of the jets

  397. turns this way

  398. and the other one

  399. turns as well

  400. and they move

  401. in parallel

  402. to one another

  403. and stay in formation.

  404. And it's remarkable

  405. watching it.

  406. The amount of precision

  407. and the amount

  408. of synchronization

  409. that goes into it.

  410. It's the same thing

  411. as synchronized swimming

  412. in the Olympics

  413. where you see a team

  414. of athletes

  415. performing

  416. these intricate maneuvers

  417. in a pool of water

  418. which would terrify me

  419. to do by myself.

  420. And yet they're there

  421. doing these things

  422. in absolute precision.

  423. Maybe half a dozen

  424. of them at once.

  425. Information

  426. in a pool of water.

  427. And when Paul

  428. talks about

  429. partnership

  430. in the Spirit

  431. that's what he's

  432. talking about.

  433. He's talking about

  434. us aligning ourselves

  435. to the guidance

  436. and the direction

  437. and the lead

  438. of the Holy Spirit

  439. who is saying

  440. this is the way

  441. in which we will go.

  442. And that involves

  443. obviously as Jesus

  444. had in his life

  445. that surrender

  446. to the will

  447. of the Father.

  448. It's that

  449. Gethsemane experience

  450. experience

  451. where Jesus

  452. for our salvation

  453. looks into the cup

  454. that is before him

  455. and says

  456. nevertheless

  457. Father not my will

  458. but yours be done.

  459. And Paul's saying

  460. that same character

  461. that same desire

  462. needs to be ours

  463. daily

  464. as we think

  465. about what we're for.

  466. As we think

  467. about who we're for.

  468. As we think

  469. about how we live

  470. and how we love

  471. and what we're about.

  472. that we surrender

  473. daily

  474. to the leading

  475. of the Holy Spirit

  476. and where that takes us

  477. is that place

  478. where we minister

  479. lovingly

  480. and sacrificially

  481. and fully

  482. to those around us.

  483. Particularly

  484. our brothers and sisters

  485. in Christ.

  486. and so it's

  487. difficult for us

  488. because so often

  489. actually

  490. in our experience

  491. the drive

  492. the desire

  493. of our lives

  494. is to do

  495. almost the exact

  496. opposite.

  497. It's really been

  498. the case

  499. since COVID

  500. and the pandemic

  501. did so much

  502. fundamental damage

  503. to the character

  504. of our communities

  505. to the character

  506. of volunteering.

  507. It eroded

  508. things away

  509. and we're having

  510. slowly to rebuild

  511. these things

  512. now a few years

  513. on.

  514. But we need

  515. more of it.

  516. We need the Holy Spirit

  517. to enable us

  518. to come away

  519. from our glorious

  520. isolation

  521. and to reintegrate

  522. into proper

  523. fellowship

  524. and life together.

  525. For us to

  526. stir up

  527. true service

  528. without fear

  529. in one another's

  530. lives

  531. and to seek

  532. to minister

  533. the grace of God

  534. in Christ Jesus

  535. and the work

  536. of the gospel.

  537. And so there is

  538. to be this

  539. participation

  540. this partnership

  541. in the Holy Spirit.

  542. There's a few

  543. things that flow

  544. from this.

  545. Just some

  546. quick theological

  547. ideas that are

  548. really important

  549. for us to grasp.

  550. If ever

  551. somebody's asking

  552. you to say

  553. well you know

  554. what do you mean

  555. the Holy Spirit

  556. is a person?

  557. Why is God

  558. a triune person?

  559. Why is God

  560. a trinity?

  561. This is one of

  562. the places

  563. where we go to.

  564. We can be assured

  565. the Holy Spirit

  566. is a person.

  567. You don't have

  568. a partnership

  569. with a force.

  570. You don't have

  571. a partnership

  572. with an energy

  573. field.

  574. You have

  575. a partnership

  576. with a person.

  577. And so where

  578. Paul says

  579. if there's any

  580. participation

  581. in the Spirit

  582. what he's talking

  583. about is

  584. the Spirit

  585. as a person

  586. interacting with us.

  587. So we can be sure

  588. that the Spirit

  589. is a person

  590. here.

  591. But equally

  592. that there's a Spirit

  593. as a person

  594. as someone

  595. we can offend.

  596. As Paul says

  597. elsewhere in fact

  598. it's possible

  599. to grieve

  600. the Spirit

  601. because we don't

  602. want to work

  603. with him

  604. because we resist

  605. his call upon

  606. our lives

  607. because we want

  608. to go in a

  609. different direction

  610. and we say

  611. enough of it

  612. we don't want you.

  613. And it's possible

  614. to grieve

  615. the Spirit

  616. and when we do

  617. that sometimes

  618. we will discover

  619. that for a season

  620. he might leave

  621. us alone.

  622. The Spirit

  623. might say

  624. well fine

  625. you do your own

  626. thing for a while

  627. and we'll see

  628. how you get on.

  629. There's lessons

  630. for us

  631. to learn

  632. when that happens.

  633. There is this

  634. partnership as well

  635. where we work

  636. together

  637. with the Holy Spirit

  638. where the Spirit

  639. is the one leading

  640. but we are following

  641. clearly.

  642. It's like we were

  643. thinking this morning

  644. about Noah

  645. when God showed him

  646. and told him

  647. how to build the ark.

  648. Moses is at pains

  649. to tell us

  650. Noah did all

  651. that the Lord

  652. commanded him.

  653. When Noah was told

  654. to put the animals

  655. into the ark

  656. and prepare for the flood

  657. Noah did all the things

  658. that the Lord

  659. commanded him.

  660. When Noah himself

  661. had to take his family

  662. into the ark

  663. and wait for God

  664. to close the door

  665. Noah did all

  666. that God commanded him.

  667. When it came time

  668. for Noah to come

  669. out of the ark

  670. Noah did all

  671. that God commanded him.

  672. Our lives

  673. need to be

  674. characterized

  675. by that listening

  676. to the voice

  677. of the Lord

  678. and the Holy Spirit

  679. guiding and directing us

  680. and it applies

  681. to all of us

  682. as a church.

  683. The final point

  684. is in verse 10

  685. of chapter 3

  686. the third time

  687. Paul uses the same word

  688. is when he's talking

  689. about his own salvation

  690. and his experience

  691. of suffering

  692. and he says

  693. in verse 10

  694. I'll read it

  695. maybe just a wee bit

  696. before that

  697. for Christ's sake

  698. I have suffered

  699. the loss of all things

  700. and count them

  701. as rubbish

  702. in order that

  703. I may gain Christ

  704. and be found in him

  705. not having a righteousness

  706. of my own

  707. that comes from the law

  708. but that which comes

  709. through faith in Christ

  710. the righteousness

  711. from God

  712. that depends on faith

  713. that I may know him

  714. and the power

  715. of his resurrection

  716. and may share

  717. his sufferings

  718. that I may go

  719. into partnership

  720. with his sufferings

  721. that I would have

  722. koinonia

  723. in his suffering

  724. becoming like him

  725. in his death

  726. and that by any means

  727. possible

  728. I may attain

  729. the resurrection

  730. of the dead

  731. Paul there

  732. in chapter 3

  733. he gives this wonderful

  734. statement of how

  735. justification works

  736. of how our salvation

  737. effectively works

  738. our salvation

  739. is that which makes us

  740. in God's eyes

  741. and in God's presence

  742. righteous

  743. acceptable to him

  744. our sin

  745. covered holy

  746. and that happens

  747. because we receive

  748. the righteousness

  749. of Jesus

  750. we're clothed

  751. in the righteousness

  752. of Christ

  753. but Paul

  754. says as well

  755. that there's

  756. something else

  757. going on here

  758. something deep

  759. and mysterious

  760. in that God

  761. hasn't left us

  762. at that point

  763. there's a work

  764. that goes on

  765. that as we go on

  766. as believers

  767. there's a continual

  768. progress

  769. of that work

  770. of our sanctification

  771. of our being made

  772. more and more

  773. like Christ Jesus

  774. and the truth

  775. of it is

  776. that there is

  777. no gain

  778. without pain

  779. in the Christian

  780. life

  781. the mystery

  782. is that there

  783. is no glory

  784. without the road

  785. of the cross

  786. without us

  787. being taken

  788. to that place

  789. where Jesus

  790. himself

  791. was taken to

  792. and so when

  793. Paul talks

  794. about the Christian

  795. somehow participating

  796. in the death

  797. of Jesus

  798. he's talking

  799. about two

  800. separate things

  801. in fact

  802. there is a sense

  803. in which we

  804. participate in the

  805. death of Jesus

  806. for our salvation

  807. at the cross

  808. the old person

  809. with its sin

  810. and its guilt

  811. is put to death

  812. our sin

  813. is dealt

  814. with there

  815. it's completed

  816. the work

  817. of salvation

  818. is done

  819. but there is

  820. also an experience

  821. of an ongoing

  822. progress

  823. in the Christian

  824. life

  825. where we are

  826. coming time

  827. and again

  828. to the death

  829. of Jesus

  830. and where we

  831. need to experience

  832. in our own

  833. bodies

  834. the ongoing

  835. work of

  836. dying

  837. anew

  838. putting to death

  839. the sin

  840. that is within

  841. us

  842. ensuring that

  843. it is dealt

  844. with

  845. in Christ

  846. and so here

  847. Paul is talking

  848. about that

  849. second thing

  850. that participation

  851. that goes on

  852. in the way

  853. we think

  854. about our

  855. lives

  856. the way

  857. that we

  858. go on

  859. thinking

  860. about what

  861. happens

  862. with us

  863. daily

  864. and that's

  865. why

  866. for the

  867. Christian

  868. that participation

  869. in the

  870. gospel

  871. is not just

  872. a one-off

  873. thing

  874. that happens

  875. at the

  876. beginning

  877. of your

  878. Christian

  879. life

  880. sometimes

  881. that's

  882. the way

  883. we think

  884. we get

  885. swept into

  886. thinking

  887. about

  888. conversion

  889. has been

  890. something

  891. that happened

  892. in the

  893. past

  894. and that's

  895. what it

  896. belongs

  897. and then

  898. after that

  899. we're just

  900. going on

  901. as Christians

  902. and we're

  903. walking

  904. and we're

  905. learning

  906. and we're

  907. growing

  908. and so on

  909. but actually

  910. what we need

  911. is the cross

  912. that was there

  913. at the beginning

  914. every day

  915. in our

  916. experience

  917. that we keep

  918. coming back

  919. to and examining

  920. the death

  921. of Jesus

  922. and learning

  923. from what

  924. Christ has

  925. done

  926. in order to

  927. put to death

  928. the sin

  929. that is within

  930. us

  931. in order to

  932. keep being

  933. refreshed

  934. in this

  935. work and

  936. progress

  937. of redemption

  938. in our

  939. lives

  940. and in order

  941. to bring

  942. about the

  943. fullness

  944. of the

  945. restored

  946. image

  947. of God

  948. in order

  949. for us

  950. to attain

  951. full

  952. Christ

  953. likeness

  954. as Paul

  955. says

  956. in order

  957. that I

  958. may

  959. become

  960. somehow

  961. worthy

  962. or attain

  963. the resurrection

  964. of the dead

  965. in order

  966. that I can

  967. become like

  968. Christ

  969. in his

  970. victory

  971. and in the

  972. glorification

  973. that was his

  974. when he rose

  975. from the dead

  976. and has

  977. ascended up

  978. into heaven

  979. to be with

  980. the father

  981. in order

  982. that I may

  983. experience

  984. the fullness

  985. of the new

  986. life of God

  987. in me

  988. I need to

  989. keep coming

  990. back to

  991. and experiencing

  992. the suffering

  993. along the way

  994. and this is a

  995. strange thing

  996. about God's

  997. providence

  998. in our

  999. lives

  1000. that working

  1001. and flying

  1002. in tandem

  1003. with the

  1004. Holy Spirit

  1005. often takes

  1006. us

  1007. into places

  1008. of

  1009. suffering

  1010. the places

  1011. where the

  1012. cost of

  1013. discipleship

  1014. is laid

  1015. bare

  1016. and very

  1017. clear to

  1018. us

  1019. where it

  1020. is not

  1021. cheap

  1022. grace

  1023. that we

  1024. are called

  1025. to

  1026. but we

  1027. are called

  1028. to something

  1029. costly

  1030. we're called

  1031. to something

  1032. extreme

  1033. we're called

  1034. to lay

  1035. down our

  1036. lives

  1037. in the

  1038. pursuit

  1039. of the

  1040. righteousness

  1041. and the

  1042. glory

  1043. of Jesus

  1044. remember how

  1045. Jesus himself

  1046. did not

  1047. count equality

  1048. with God

  1049. something to

  1050. be grasped

  1051. it's not

  1052. something to

  1053. hold on to

  1054. for Jesus

  1055. rather he

  1056. empties

  1057. himself

  1058. and taking

  1059. the form

  1060. of a

  1061. servant

  1062. and becoming

  1063. obedient to

  1064. death

  1065. for us as

  1066. Christians

  1067. that is a

  1068. pathway that

  1069. will take us

  1070. into costly

  1071. places

  1072. it's a pathway

  1073. that will lead

  1074. us to places

  1075. of suffering

  1076. and sorrow

  1077. and anguish

  1078. sometimes it

  1079. will be

  1080. places

  1081. of

  1082. psychological

  1083. sorrow

  1084. where we

  1085. have to

  1086. wrestle

  1087. with our

  1088. own sinful

  1089. selves

  1090. and our

  1091. own sinful

  1092. thoughts

  1093. where in

  1094. fact the

  1095. desires of

  1096. our hearts

  1097. are the

  1098. things that

  1099. are so

  1100. wrong

  1101. and there

  1102. has to be

  1103. surgery done

  1104. to cut

  1105. these things

  1106. away

  1107. there's a

  1108. suffering

  1109. associated

  1110. with that

  1111. that as

  1112. Christians

  1113. as we

  1114. put to

  1115. death

  1116. the sin

  1117. that is

  1118. within us

  1119. there is a

  1120. pain

  1121. a suffering

  1122. of that

  1123. process

  1124. of putting

  1125. sin to

  1126. death

  1127. but equally

  1128. there's an

  1129. external

  1130. root of

  1131. suffering

  1132. as well

  1133. where we

  1134. have to

  1135. give up

  1136. the comfort

  1137. that we

  1138. take for

  1139. granted

  1140. where we

  1141. have to

  1142. sacrifice

  1143. the comforts

  1144. that we

  1145. think we're

  1146. entitled

  1147. to

  1148. the things

  1149. that we

  1150. think to

  1151. ourselves

  1152. we have

  1153. earned

  1154. and say

  1155. that's

  1156. mine

  1157. and we

  1158. would want

  1159. to grasp

  1160. it and

  1161. hold it

  1162. tight

  1163. and say

  1164. no Lord

  1165. you can

  1166. take other

  1167. things away

  1168. from me

  1169. but not

  1170. this

  1171. not my

  1172. comfortable

  1173. job

  1174. not my

  1175. comfortable

  1176. home

  1177. not my

  1178. easy life

  1179. not my

  1180. early

  1181. retirement

  1182. but rather

  1183. I can

  1184. press on

  1185. in the

  1186. costly

  1187. path of

  1188. obedience

  1189. because there

  1190. is a

  1191. greater

  1192. prize

  1193. there is

  1194. that

  1195. partnership

  1196. with

  1197. Jesus

  1198. where we

  1199. are conformed

  1200. to be like

  1201. him

  1202. and where

  1203. we gain

  1204. everything

  1205. there is a

  1206. prize

  1207. to be won

  1208. and without

  1209. fellowship

  1210. without this

  1211. partnership

  1212. without this

  1213. experience

  1214. of togetherness

  1215. with Christ

  1216. himself

  1217. the glories

  1218. that we

  1219. would long

  1220. for

  1221. will never

  1222. be attained

  1223. and so

  1224. we need

  1225. Jesus

  1226. we need

  1227. to come

  1228. with Christ

  1229. as we

  1230. go on

  1231. in this

  1232. pathway

  1233. of obedience

  1234. to him

  1235. to the

  1236. prize

  1237. and the

  1238. goal

  1239. of that

  1240. upward

  1241. calling

  1242. in him

  1243. Philippians

  1244. is a

  1245. letter

  1246. all about

  1247. fellowship

  1248. and strangely

  1249. it's a

  1250. letter of

  1251. fellowship

  1252. that leads

  1253. to joy

  1254. remember

  1255. Paul's

  1256. prayer right

  1257. at the

  1258. beginning

  1259. I am

  1260. filled

  1261. with joy

  1262. when I

  1263. think about

  1264. you

  1265. because of

  1266. your

  1267. partnership

  1268. in the

  1269. gospel

  1270. and then

  1271. he says

  1272. remember

  1273. because of

  1274. that

  1275. partnership

  1276. in the

  1277. gospel

  1278. you have

  1279. an

  1280. opportunity

  1281. for

  1282. partnership

  1283. in the

  1284. Holy

  1285. Spirit

  1286. and he

  1287. says

  1288. that

  1289. partnership

  1290. in the

  1291. Holy

  1292. Spirit

  1293. will lead

  1294. perhaps

  1295. to the

  1296. partnership

  1297. with

  1298. Christ

  1299. and his

  1300. suffering

  1301. but the

  1302. final outcome

  1303. of that

  1304. which is

  1305. implied

  1306. is the

  1307. full

  1308. blessings

  1309. of that

  1310. partnership

  1311. with

  1312. Christ

  1313. in glory

  1314. where we

  1315. will be

  1316. with him

  1317. for all

  1318. eternity

  1319. we rejoice

  1320. therefore

  1321. in a

  1322. God

  1323. who gives

  1324. us

  1325. all

  1326. things

  1327. and who

  1328. will supply

  1329. every need

  1330. of yours

  1331. according to

  1332. his riches

  1333. in glory

  1334. in Christ

  1335. Jesus

  1336. to God

  1337. our

  1338. Father

  1339. be glory

  1340. forever

  1341. and ever

  1342. Amen

  1343. let's

  1344. pray

  1345. Heavenly

  1346. Father

  1347. we

  1348. would bow

  1349. before you

  1350. just now

  1351. and we

  1352. thank you

  1353. that

  1354. there is

  1355. a salvation

  1356. to be

  1357. had

  1358. that there

  1359. is a

  1360. partnership

  1361. in the

  1362. gospel

  1363. that we

  1364. can know

  1365. and experience

  1366. for ourselves

  1367. and I pray

  1368. for anyone

  1369. here tonight

  1370. who does

  1371. not yet

  1372. know that

  1373. in its

  1374. fullness

  1375. those here

  1376. who don't

  1377. know Jesus

  1378. as their

  1379. saviour

  1380. have not

  1381. settled

  1382. in faith

  1383. in him

  1384. and I

  1385. pray Lord

  1386. that you

  1387. would open

  1388. their hearts

  1389. just now

  1390. to receive

  1391. Christ

  1392. that you

  1393. would help

  1394. them to

  1395. trust in

  1396. Jesus

  1397. and to

  1398. discover

  1399. that

  1400. partnership

  1401. in eternal

  1402. life

  1403. that is

  1404. laid out

  1405. before them

  1406. along the

  1407. way Lord

  1408. we pray

  1409. that you

  1410. would help

  1411. us to

  1412. experience

  1413. that partnership

  1414. of the

  1415. Holy Spirit

  1416. that we

  1417. would know

  1418. the Holy

  1419. Spirit's

  1420. help in

  1421. our lives

  1422. that we

  1423. would know

  1424. the Holy

  1425. Spirit's

  1426. leading

  1427. and direction

  1428. and that

  1429. we would

  1430. heed

  1431. where the

  1432. Holy Spirit

  1433. leads us

  1434. because that

  1435. is indeed

  1436. the path

  1437. of blessing

  1438. in the life

  1439. of the

  1440. Christian

  1441. and ultimately

  1442. Lord if that

  1443. leads us

  1444. to places

  1445. of suffering

  1446. we pray

  1447. that we

  1448. would not

  1449. despair

  1450. in it

  1451. but that

  1452. we would

  1453. know

  1454. that this

  1455. suffering

  1456. that we

  1457. endure

  1458. is a

  1459. partnership

  1460. in the

  1461. sufferings

  1462. of Jesus

  1463. it is

  1464. indeed as

  1465. Paul says

  1466. elsewhere

  1467. it is

  1468. making up

  1469. what is

  1470. lacking

  1471. in the

  1472. sufferings

  1473. of Christ

  1474. for the

  1475. salvation

  1476. of this

  1477. world

  1478. and so

  1479. Lord may

  1480. we

  1481. through all

  1482. that we

  1483. endure

  1484. show forth

  1485. the glorious

  1486. riches of

  1487. our God

  1488. and show

  1489. that he

  1490. is worthy

  1491. of our

  1492. trust

  1493. even when

  1494. times of

  1495. despair

  1496. may come

  1497. to us

  1498. help us

  1499. encourage us

  1500. on the road

  1501. enable us

  1502. to be a

  1503. blessing

  1504. and we

  1505. ask this

  1506. all in

  1507. Jesus name

  1508. Amen

  1509. and we're

  1510. going to sing

  1511. in conclusion

  1512. in the

  1513. Scottish

  1514. Psalter

  1515. Psalm

  1516. 133

  1517. this is

  1518. page 424

  1519. in the

  1520. psalm book

  1521. page 424

  1522. this is a

  1523. psalm that

  1524. expresses the

  1525. same joy

  1526. that Paul

  1527. had as he

  1528. thought about

  1529. the fellowship

  1530. of the

  1531. Philippian

  1532. church

  1533. behold

  1534. so see

  1535. look and

  1536. see

  1537. this is

  1538. worth

  1539. noting

  1540. how good

  1541. a thing

  1542. it is

  1543. and how

  1544. becoming

  1545. well

  1546. together

  1547. such as

  1548. brethren

  1549. are

  1550. in unity

  1551. to dwell

  1552. like precious

  1553. ointment

  1554. on the

  1555. head

  1556. that down

  1557. the

  1558. beard

  1559. did

  1560. flow

  1561. even

  1562. Aaron's

  1563. beard

  1564. and to

  1565. the

  1566. skirts

  1567. did

  1568. of his

  1569. garments

  1570. go

  1571. it's

  1572. that

  1573. that

  1574. sense

  1575. of

  1576. anointing

  1577. is really

  1578. the Holy

  1579. Spirit's

  1580. work

  1581. it's the

  1582. spirit

  1583. that

  1584. anoints us

  1585. and enables

  1586. us and equips

  1587. us for

  1588. work in

  1589. God's

  1590. service

  1591. and that

  1592. flows out

  1593. of this

  1594. partnership

  1595. that we

  1596. have

  1597. with

  1598. Christ

  1599. and with

  1600. the Holy

  1601. Spirit

  1602. and this

  1603. partnership

  1604. in the

  1605. work of

  1606. the gospel

  1607. that we're

  1608. called to

  1609. and so

  1610. as Herman's

  1611. Jew

  1612. the Jew

  1613. that doth

  1614. on Zion

  1615. hills

  1616. descend

  1617. for there

  1618. the blessing

  1619. God commands

  1620. life

  1621. that shall

  1622. never end

  1623. the promise

  1624. of everlasting

  1625. life is one

  1626. that is bound

  1627. up in the

  1628. unity of God's

  1629. people with

  1630. their Messiah

  1631. with their

  1632. Savior Christ

  1633. he is the

  1634. one who

  1635. will water

  1636. in the new

  1637. heavens and

  1638. the new

  1639. earth will

  1640. water

  1641. the tree

  1642. of life

  1643. and the

  1644. fruit of

  1645. that tree

  1646. will be

  1647. the means

  1648. by which

  1649. we have

  1650. an experience

  1651. that everlasting

  1652. life as well

  1653. and so the

  1654. blessing of

  1655. God is that

  1656. Jew that

  1657. flows from

  1658. Mount Zion

  1659. itself

  1660. it's a

  1661. wonderful

  1662. picture in

  1663. the psalm

  1664. of the

  1665. blessings of

  1666. unity

  1667. overflowing

  1668. in the

  1669. life of

  1670. the church

  1671. so behold

  1672. how good

  1673. a thing

  1674. it is

  1675. and how

  1676. becoming

  1677. well

  1678. let's stand

  1679. and sing

  1680. the whole

  1681. psalm

  1682. together

  1683. such

  1684. shall

  1685. unity

  1686. to dwell

  1687. like precious

  1688. ointment

  1689. on the head

  1690. that down the

  1691. bearded

  1692. flow

  1693. he

  1694. made

  1695. your spirit

  1696. and to

  1697. the church

  1698. did all

  1699. his garments

  1700. go

  1701. as

  1702. her

  1703. most

  1704. do

  1705. the

  1706. junta

  1707. of

  1708. Zion

  1709. on hills

  1710. be

  1711. said

  1712. for

  1713. there

  1714. the

  1715. blessing

  1716. God

  1717. commands

  1718. life

  1719. that

  1720. shall

  1721. never

  1722. end

  1723. the

1724. grace of the Lord Jesus Christ

1725. the love of God the Father

1726. and the fellowship of God the Holy Spirit

1727. be with each one of us now and always

  1728. Amen

  1729. a

  1730. Thank you.
