  1. Romans 8 and looking at verse 33.

  2. Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?

  3. ! It is God who justifies.

  4. !

  5. It is important for us to follow the Lord Jesus Christ.

  6. Particularly if we have been following the Lord for a long time,

  7. it is important for us often to just stop and to reflect and to remember

  8. what it is that God the Father did

  9. and what it is that God the Son did for us

  10. and what God the Holy Spirit continues to do for us

  11. and Christ interceding for us.

  12. And this chapter is one of these chapters that brings before us in a very, very clear way.

  13. It is a chapter, and particularly this latter part,

  14. it is a tremendous encouragement of assurance

  15. because it is something that quite often we can grapple with,

  16. our assurance, being assured of our faith.

  17. Sometimes we are so assured,

  18. we are absolutely sure that we belong to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  19. no doubt whatever.

  20. And for some Christians,

  21. they spend a lot of their lives like that.

  22. But many don't.

  23. Many struggle at different times

  24. with a whole sense of assurance.

  25. And at the heart of all that the Apostle is reminding of us here

  26. is that God is for us.

  27. That God is not against us.

  28. That as a believer, God is for us.

  29. And that is an incredible statement in itself.

  30. If God be for us, who can be against us?

  31. So that means God is for us.

  32. The creator of this world,

  33. the one who brought all things into being by the word of his power,

  34. he is for you.

  35. You are precious to him,

  36. far more precious than you or I ever realize.

  37. He will never forget you.

  38. He will never fall out with you.

  39. He'll never disown you.

  40. He'll never not be there for you.

  41. He's committed to you completely.

  42. And every day we should remember that,

  43. because there are times in our experience

  44. when we say, like Jacob said,

  45. remember,

  46. he said,

  47. all these things are against me.

  48. And yet,

  49. Jacob was to discover by the end of his life,

  50. far than being against him,

  51. they were actually all working together

  52. for his good

  53. and for God's people's good.

  54. But sometimes when we're going through the difficult times

  55. and things aren't working out

  56. and God's providence is mysterious

  57. and we're struggling,

  58. we kind of echo Jacob's sentiments

  59. and say,

  60. all these things are against us

  61. or against me.

  62. Well,

  63. it certainly wasn't.

  64. As the Lord says in Jeremiah,

  65. I know the plans that I have for you,

  66. plans for peace

  67. are not of evil

  68. to give you a future and a hope.

  69. Now,

  70. Paul is arguing here and saying,

  71. he's displaying how much God is for us

  72. and he's saying,

  73. if God has done the greatest thing possible for us,

  74. it is inconceivable

  75. but that he will do the lesser things as well.

  76. And the greatest thing that he did

  77. was in giving his son.

  78. Giving his son

  79. to a life

  80. that ended up in pain,

  81. in torture,

  82. in abuse,

  83. in crucifixion,

  84. in abandonment,

  85. in the full experiencing

  86. of the wrath of God

  87. and death itself.

  88. That's what the father gave the son up to.

  89. That's what God gave his son up to

  90. for you and for me.

  91. And that's what the son gave himself up to

  92. for you and for me.

  93. So,

  94. if God has done this for us,

  95. the greatest thing possible,

  96. then,

  97. obviously,

  98. that's the argument here,

  99. he will do the lesser things as well.

  100. That was Jesus' own argument,

  101. remember,

  102. when he was talking about how God cares for us.

  103. He even cares for the lilies,

  104. for the birds in the air.

  105. He cares even for the lilies.

  106. And if God cares about the grass

  107. that grows on the ground,

  108. how much more will he

  109. but care for you as well?

  110. And so,

  111. Paul then goes on to ask this question,

  112. who shall bring,

  113. that's what he's saying,

  114. who shall bring any charge

  115. against God's elect?

  116. The election of God

  117. is one of the most wonderful

  118. statements,

  119. truths,

  120. that we have

  121. in the word of God.

  122. And it's hard for us,

  123. we cannot,

  124. to even begin to imagine,

  125. but before ever we were,

  126. God has set his love upon us.

  127. Now,

  128. I know our minds can't process that.

  129. It is beyond human comprehension

  130. because we're dealing

  131. from where we are

  132. here in time

  133. into eternity.

  134. And it is beyond

  135. our understanding.

  136. But faith

  137. believes it.

  138. You have no problem

  139. with your faith

  140. in accepting that

  141. and believing

  142. that from all eternity,

  143. God

  144. has set his love upon you.

  145. And he knows

  146. everything about us,

  147. all our yesterdays

  148. and every yesterday

  149. of our life.

  150. Because as the scripture

  151. tells us,

  152. that a thousand years

  153. are but as yesterday

  154. and as a watch

  155. in the night.

  156. So God knows

  157. everything about us

  158. in intimate detail.

  159. But going way back

  160. into the councils

  161. of eternity,

  162. we find that God

  163. set his love

  164. upon us.

  165. And I find this

  166. one of the most

  167. comforting truths

  168. that we can ever find

  169. in scripture.

  170. Because you see,

  171. part of our problem

  172. is that we often

  173. wonder,

  174. did I start right?

  175. I'm here tonight

  176. as a Christian,

  177. you're saying,

  178. but did I start right?

  179. And if I didn't

  180. start right,

  181. maybe I have been

  182. mistaken all the way

  183. along.

  184. Because you look

  185. at your life

  186. and you see

  187. all the inconsistencies,

  188. you see the failures,

  189. you're aware of

  190. who you are

  191. and what you are

  192. and so often

  193. we say,

  194. well maybe,

  195. maybe,

  196. maybe it was simply

  197. because of a very

  198. difficult providence

  199. that I was going through

  200. and I said to the Lord,

  201. Lord,

  202. you've got to help me here

  203. and you've asked the Lord

  204. to come in

  205. to your life.

  206. But then you're saying

  207. as the time goes on,

  208. maybe I didn't

  209. ask Christ

  210. to come in,

  211. maybe I didn't,

  212. maybe I didn't

  213. make a decision,

  214. maybe,

  215. and sometimes

  216. we can torment

  217. ourselves

  218. with all these

  219. kind of thoughts,

  220. maybe,

  221. maybe I didn't

  222. start right.

  223. Have you ever

  224. asked yourself that

  225. and you're thinking,

  226. here I am

  227. all these years later

  228. and what if I,

  229. what if,

  230. what if it's not

  231. real faith?

  232. Well,

  233. here's the beauty

  234. of it.

  235. It didn't start

  236. with you.

  237. It started

  238. with the Lord.

  239. And the Lord

  240. is in charge

  241. of the providences

  242. and all the different

  243. things in our lives.

  244. And every person

  245. here has a different

  246. experience

  247. of how you came

  248. to start

  249. following the Lord.

  250. And following

  251. is a lovely

  252. biblical expression

  253. of what a Christian

  254. is,

  255. to follow the Lord.

  256. Jesus says that

  257. often,

  258. to follow me.

  259. Follow me.

  260. And that's what we do

  261. as Christians,

  262. we follow the Lord.

  263. And you began

  264. to follow the Lord

  265. because the Lord

  266. had set his love

  267. upon you.

  268. He had always

  269. set his love,

  270. but there was a

  271. particular point

  272. in your life

  273. when he said

  274. he began to work

  275. in your heart

  276. and in your life.

  277. And it might be

  278. through lots

  279. of different experiences.

  280. And the reason

  281. that you're still

  282. following tonight

  283. is because

  284. you are

  285. following the Lord

  286. because of his love.

  287. And you can't

  288. turn back,

  289. you can't go away,

  290. you've experienced,

  291. there's been lots of things

  292. that have happened

  293. in your life

  294. which could,

  295. from a natural

  296. point of view,

  297. would cause shipwreck

  298. and cause you

  299. to go back,

  300. but you haven't

  301. because you're rooted

  302. to him

  303. and you're grounded

  304. in him

  305. because of his love.

  306. And it's his love

  307. to you

  308. that is at the

  309. start of it all.

  310. You notice

  311. when in verse 35

  312. the apostle says,

  313. who shall separate us

  314. not from,

  315. who shall separate

  316. us

  317. our love

  318. for Christ,

  319. but no,

  320. it's his.

  321. Who shall separate us

  322. from the love

  323. of Christ?

  324. If it was looking

  325. simply at our love,

  326. then you'd put,

  327. but whatever love

  328. we have

  329. is as a result

  330. of his love

  331. to us.

  332. And that is

  333. an incredible comfort

  334. because it gets rid

  335. of all the problems

  336. that we have

  337. about,

  338. maybe I didn't

  339. start right

  340. or what.

  341. It's because of

  342. his love

  343. that worked

  344. in your heart

  345. and produced

  346. a love for him

  347. and the things

  348. of God

  349. that you tonight

  350. are following him.

  351. And so this is

  352. where the great

  353. encouragement is

  354. because Jesus

  355. had said,

  356. all that the

  357. Father gives me,

  358. everyone,

  359. all that the

  360. Father gives me

  361. will come to me

  362. and him that

  363. cometh to me

  364. I will in no

  365. wise cast out.

  366. So we have

  367. the two sides

  368. of it there.

  369. We have

  370. the Father's

  371. giving of the

  372. people to Christ

  373. and in time

  374. they come to

  375. Christ

  376. and Christ

  377. will turn

  378. none of them

  379. away.

  380. Now some people

  381. say,

  382. you've got to be

  383. careful about

  384. mentioning election

  385. because people

  386. will say

  387. they'll hide

  388. behind and we

  389. know that some

  390. people do hide

  391. behind the

  392. doctrine of

  393. election and

  394. they say,

  395. well if I'm

  396. going to be

  397. saved,

  398. I'll be

  399. saved anyway

  400. and if I'm

  401. not going to

  402. be saved,

  403. well there's

  404. nothing I

  405. can do about

  406. it.

  407. Well scripture

  408. certainly is not

  409. silent on the

  410. doctrine of

  411. election and

  412. we find that

  413. the great

  414. apostles who

  415. preached the

  416. doctrine of

  417. election saw

  418. thousands coming

  419. to faith under

  420. their preaching.

  421. You'll see how

  422. much Peter talks

  423. about election and

  424. yet Peter was a

  425. very one,

  426. thousands were

  427. converted as he

  428. preached.

  429. And of

  430. course when we

  431. preach we have

  432. to give both

  433. sides because we

  434. have our

  435. responsibility as

  436. well.

  437. And we're told

  438. that what we are

  439. to do, we're

  440. never told to

  441. just sit and

  442. fold our arms and

  443. wait for God to

  444. work.

  445. We're told to

  446. search and to

  447. seek and we're

  448. told we're given

  449. great promises to

  450. knock, to ask, to

  451. search, to seek,

  452. to pray.

  453. And if we do so

  454. sincerely and

  455. with all our

  456. heart God will

  457. honour that and

  458. respond to that.

  459. So the question

  460. is asked here,

  461. who shall bring

  462. any charge

  463. against God's

  464. elector, against

  465. the believer?

  466. Now in order to

  467. understand this we

  468. have to put

  469. ourselves into the

  470. courtroom because

  471. we're talking legal

  472. terms here.

  473. Here's the court

  474. in session.

  475. And the call is

  476. made.

  477. And here you

  478. are in the

  479. box.

  480. And the call is

  481. made, can anybody

  482. bring any charge

  483. against this

  484. person?

  485. There you are as

  486. a believer.

  487. So as we say,

  488. it's a legal

  489. term.

  490. We're talking

  491. legally in God's

  492. sight.

  493. And we know

  494. that there are

  495. many who can

  496. bring charges.

  497. We know that

  498. Satan brings

  499. charges all the

  500. time.

  501. If we could see

  502. behind the scenes

  503. and see how many

  504. charges Satan

  505. is bringing

  506. about us

  507. before God.

  508. We're told that

  509. in Revelation.

  510. For the accuser

  511. of the brethren

  512. is cast down

  513. which accused

  514. them before our

  515. God day and

  516. night.

  517. Now we know

  518. it's an awful

  519. thing to stand

  520. accused.

  521. And the devil

  522. is an expert

  523. at accusing

  524. us.

  525. And he brings

  526. up before us

  527. so much.

  528. He'll bring

  529. your past.

  530. And he'll bring,

  531. particularly since

  532. you became a

  533. Christian.

  534. You may not

  535. bother too much

  536. about your life

  537. before you

  538. were a Christian.

  539. I'll bother

  540. with that as

  541. well.

  542. But particularly

  543. since you

  544. became a

  545. Christian.

  546. You'll say

  547. call yourself

  548. a Christian.

  549. You remember

  550. what you said.

  551. You remember

  552. what you did.

  553. Remember these

  554. times.

  555. Remember.

  556. Remember.

  557. And all these

  558. things can

  559. really, really

  560. bring you down.

  561. But you know

  562. the wonderful

  563. thing is that

  564. not one

  565. accusation that

  566. is brought

  567. against the

  568. Christian will

  569. stick.

  570. Who shall

  571. bring any

  572. charge?

  573. Well, as you

  574. say, the world

  575. can.

  576. There are five

  577. things in

  578. operation.

  579. There's sin.

  580. There's Satan.

  581. There's the law

  582. of God.

  583. There's death.

  584. And there's hell.

  585. And these five

  586. things bring us

  587. into condemnation.

  588. These five things

  589. are what are going

  590. to destroy us.

  591. because we're

  592. regarding the

  593. law of God.

  594. Not that the

  595. law of God is

  596. evil.

  597. It is anything

  598. but it is

  599. perfect.

  600. But we are all

  601. required to

  602. adhere every

  603. single day in

  604. thought, word,

  605. and deed to

  606. God's law.

  607. To live it

  608. perfectly.

  609. And if we fail

  610. at any point,

  611. we are guilty of

  612. failing in

  613. everything.

  614. And that means

  615. nobody, nobody

  616. can fulfill

  617. God's law.

  618. We are all

  619. under condemnation.

  620. We are all

  621. naturally under

  622. the wrath of

  623. God.

  624. We are all

  625. standing accused.

  626. But of course

  627. this is what

  628. the Lord Jesus

  629. has done.

  630. Because Jesus

  631. came.

  632. Jesus came and

  633. he fulfilled the

  634. law.

  635. And Jesus is

  636. the one who

  637. experienced all

  638. the wrath and

  639. all the

  640. condemnation of

  641. God.

  642. And the thing

  643. is this, at the

  644. moment that we're

  645. born again, we

  646. are justified.

  647. Remember,

  648. justification is a

  649. legal act.

  650. We don't become

  651. more justified than

  652. the very first

  653. moment we become

  654. justified.

  655. It means that as

  656. God looks on us,

  657. when we come to

  658. accept Christ,

  659. God looks on us

  660. as somebody whose

  661. sins have been

  662. forgiven and

  663. pardoned.

  664. That's part of what

  665. he does.

  666. says, your sins

  667. and your

  668. iniquities, I

  669. will remember

  670. no more.

  671. It's like the

  672. slate is wiped

  673. clean.

  674. There's none

  675. there.

  676. Oh, there's all

  677. the accusations

  678. and God says,

  679. no, they've all

  680. been wiped

  681. clean by my

  682. son.

  683. But God goes

  684. even further

  685. than that.

  686. He now accepts

  687. us as righteous

  688. because of what

  689. Christ has done.

  690. And you see,

  691. it's an amazing

  692. transaction that

  693. takes place because

  694. God, who is

  695. absolutely just,

  696. and in order to

  697. retain his

  698. justice, he

  699. cannot overlook

  700. sin or bypass

  701. it or ignore it

  702. in any shape or

  703. form.

  704. It has to be

  705. punished.

  706. punished.

  707. And because

  708. Christ was

  709. punished in

  710. our place, it

  711. is impossible

  712. for God to

  713. punish us

  714. now.

  715. Christ has been

  716. punished.

  717. Because of his

  718. justice and who

  719. he is, it's

  720. once and for

  721. all upon the

  722. Lord Jesus

  723. Christ.

  724. And that means

  725. that we are as

  726. justified as we

  727. will ever be.

  728. Now, justification

  729. doesn't mean that

  730. all of a sudden

  731. we become perfect.

  732. Sinless

  733. creatures, not

  734. at all.

  735. Justification is

  736. not what

  737. affects, we

  738. know that there

  739. are two great

  740. terms that we

  741. remember it from

  742. our catechism

  743. days.

  744. And remember

  745. how there's

  746. justification and

  747. adoption and

  748. sanctification.

  749. And if you

  750. remember,

  751. justification was

  752. an act and

  753. adoption is an

  754. act and

  755. sanctification was

  756. a work.

  757. And in a sense

  758. sanctification is

  759. both an act

  760. and a work

  761. because there

  762. is a once and

  763. for all

  764. sanctification

  765. because to

  766. sanctify simply

  767. means to set

  768. apart.

  769. And that's

  770. what God has

  771. done.

  772. The moment

  773. you're born

  774. again, you're

  775. set apart to

  776. him.

  777. You belong to

  778. him.

  779. Don't belong to

  780. anybody else.

  781. You belong to

  782. him.

  783. So in one sense

  784. you're sanctified

  785. right away.

  786. but there's

  787. this ongoing work

  788. and sanctification

  789. is changing

  790. us bit by

  791. bit so that

  792. we become

  793. more and

  794. more resembling

  795. the Lord

  796. Jesus Christ.

  797. That's not

  798. what justification

  799. does.

  800. That's what

  801. sanctification

  802. does.

  803. So always

  804. remember that

  805. no claim,

  806. no charge

  807. will ever

  808. stand.

  809. The world

  810. makes plenty

  811. charges against

  812. the Christian

  813. because as the

  814. world looks at

  815. the Christian,

  816. we make the

  817. mistake, I

  818. can remember it

  819. myself, of

  820. thinking whenever

  821. you see a

  822. Christian doing

  823. or saying

  824. something that

  825. you think,

  826. that's not

  827. right, or

  828. doing something

  829. that's not,

  830. you say,

  831. call themselves

  832. a Christian.

  833. Hypocrite.

  834. I remember

  835. it.

  836. Because back

  837. then, I

  838. thought that a

  839. Christian became

  840. perfect.

  841. But a Christian

  842. isn't.

  843. There's not one

  844. Christian who's

  845. perfect in this

  846. world.

  847. We're full of

  848. sin.

  849. Our hearts are

  850. just a

  851. cogmire of

  852. deceit, the

  853. hardest deceitful

  854. above all things

  855. and desperately

  856. wicked.

  857. Not till glory

  858. will we be made

  859. perfect in

  860. holiness.

  861. So the

  862. world's charges

  863. against the

  864. Christian don't

  865. stand.

  866. Because even as

  867. we live out our

  868. days in this

  869. world, all our

  870. faults, all our

  871. sins, all our

  872. blemishes, they

  873. have been pardoned

  874. and forgiven in

  875. Christ.

  876. And that's the

  877. wonderful thing.

  878. What a liberty,

  879. what a freedom

  880. it gives a

  881. Christian.

  882. Once we discover

  883. this, that is all

  884. of grace.

  885. we didn't do

  886. anything.

  887. We just

  888. received.

  889. And I think

  890. sometimes when

  891. you're trying to

  892. share the gospel

  893. with somebody, one

  894. of the hardest

  895. things for them to

  896. grasp is that

  897. salvation is a

  898. gift.

  899. That you don't

  900. earn it.

  901. There's nothing

  902. you can do to

  903. earn it.

  904. All you can do

  905. is just come

  906. falling on your

  907. knees and say,

  908. Lord, you've

  909. got to help me.

  910. I can't do this

  911. myself.

  912. It's the greatest

  913. discovery.

  914. Because that's

  915. the place where

  916. the Lord will

  917. come and deal

  918. with you and

  919. bring you that

  920. salvation, that

  921. light, that life

  922. that you need.

  923. So we find who

  924. shall bring any

  925. charge against

  926. God's elect?

  927. Nobody.

  928. Because God

  929. justifies.

  930. And that follows

  931. on very simply

  932. who is to

  933. condemn.

  934. Well, it says,

  935. if you were to

  936. say, you could

  937. put this question,

  938. will Christ

  939. Jesus condemn?

  940. Well, Christ

  941. Jesus can't

  942. condemn.

  943. Jesus is the

  944. one that we're

  945. going to have to

  946. appear before

  947. the judgment.

  948. Remember, judgment

  949. seat of Christ.

  950. We stand before

  951. him.

  952. Is he going to

  953. condemn us

  954. having died for

  955. us?

  956. Of course not.

  957. He can never

  958. condemn anybody

  959. that he has

  960. died for.

  961. In fact, at the

  962. opening of the

  963. chapter, it tells

  964. us there is

  965. now no

  966. condemnation to

  967. those who are

  968. in Christ

  969. Jesus.

  970. So that's why

  971. tonight I want

  972. us just to

  973. simply look

  974. back on what

  975. it is to be a

  976. Christian.

  977. Because sometimes

  978. we forget.

  979. Sometimes we

  980. just drift along

  981. and we take it

  982. for granted.

  983. And it's

  984. important for

  985. us to remind

  986. ourselves just

  987. what the Lord

  988. has done.

  989. and to

  990. remember that

  991. you're following

  992. the Lord

  993. because he

  994. set his love

  995. upon you.

  996. That's where it

  997. began.

  998. And that is the

  999. greatest encouragement

  1000. to us.

  1001. And try and get

  1002. rid of all these

  1003. things.

  1004. Did I start

  1005. right?

  1006. Because you know

  1007. sometimes you go

  1008. through all that

  1009. in your mind.

  1010. And I've done it

  1011. myself.

  1012. I remember

  1013. sometimes going

  1014. back and I'd

  1015. come to the Lord

1016. and say Lord if I

  1017. have never come

  1018. right I'm coming

  1019. to you tonight.

  1020. There's nobody

  1021. else I want in

  1022. my life but you

  1023. Lord.

  1024. But you're already

  1025. there.

  1026. This is Satan

  1027. again.

  1028. Satan is tempting

  1029. us and the sin

  1030. of our heart and

  1031. all these things.

  1032. We love him

  1033. tonight because he

  1034. first loved us.

  1035. That's it.

  1036. Let's pray.

  1037. Lord our God

  1038. we give thanks

  1039. for the wonderful

  1040. news that the

  1041. gospel brings.

  1042. We give thanks

  1043. that it's light

  1044. and life and we

  1045. pray that we may

  1046. rest upon the

  1047. finished work of

  1048. Christ.

  1049. And we give

  1050. thanks that you

  1051. turn no one

  1052. away that comes

  1053. to you.

  1054. Irrespective of

  1055. our past it's

  1056. for sinners that

  1057. Christ came.

  1058. Christ didn't

  1059. come for the

  1060. righteous.

  1061. He came for

  1062. sinners.

  1063. This man eats

  1064. with publicans

  1065. and sinners was

  1066. how the Pharisees

  1067. they were trying

  1068. to condemn him

  1069. and how thankful

  1070. that he sat

  1071. with the publicans

  1072. and sinners.

  1073. This man

  1074. received sinners.

  1075. They mocked him

  1076. with these words

  1077. but how thankful

  1078. that Jesus Christ

  1079. received sinners

  1080. because that's what

  1081. we all are.

  1082. And so help us

  1083. tonight and help

  1084. us here.

  1085. As we heard

  1086. we pray Lord

  1087. to direct us

  1088. in light of

  1089. the congregational

  1090. meeting which will

  1091. take place soon.

  1092. and we ask

  1093. Lord to guide

  1094. Calamurdo

  1095. in the decision

  1096. that he has to

  1097. make and we

  1098. pray that you

  1099. will guide him

  1100. that it will be

  1101. heavenly wisdom

  1102. that will be

  1103. given because

  1104. that's the only

  1105. direction that

  1106. we can know.

  1107. We pray to bless

  1108. this world that

  1109. we are part of

  1110. and Lord what a

  1111. world of upheaval.

  1112. There's so much

  1113. pain and heartache

  1114. all over.

  1115. It's devastating

  1116. when we see of

  1117. all the carnage

  1118. all the deaths

  1119. when we think of

  1120. all that's happening

  1121. in the Middle East

  1122. and all that's

  1123. happening in Iran

  1124. and all that's

  1125. happening in Ukraine

  1126. and in all

  1127. just so many areas

  1128. of this world

  1129. and we pray for

  1130. your people.

  1131. Your people are

  1132. suffering unbelievably

  1133. and we ask Lord

  1134. for their protection

  1135. for their help

  1136. and we pray Lord

  1137. that you will

  1138. intervene.

  1139. Lord bring peace

  1140. to reign.

  1141. Sometimes we don't

  1142. know how that is

  1143. possible.

  1144. But all things

  1145. are possible with

  1146. you.

1147. And so we pray Lord

  1148. for your intervention.

  1149. Bless us all then

  1150. we pray and grant

  1151. us your grace.

1152. Take us all to our

  1153. home safely we pray

  1154. for giving us our

  1155. sin in Jesus name.

  1156. Amen.

  1157. Amen.
