  1. We can turn back together to our reading in Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  2. ! This evening we're going to look at verse 1 to verse 8.

  3. ! Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  4. We'll just read again at the beginning of that chapter.

  5. In the year that King Uzziah died,

  6. I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne high and lifted up, and so on.

  7. What kind of year have you had so far?

  8. As we've come into the month of April,

  9. we've come to that quarter of the way through 2026,

  10. and you could maybe say,

  11. well, perhaps things have been going well so far.

  12. Perhaps things have been difficult to this point.

  13. Or perhaps maybe it's just been,

  14. seemed like just another ordinary year in many ways.

  15. It's the kind of question we can just ponder from time to time.

  16. How have things been so far?

  17. We've got young people in here tonight,

  18. and many of you will be coming up to exam times just now,

  19. so maybe you don't want to be asked too many questions just now.

  20. But that kind of question is a kind of reflective question.

  21. How would you answer that in terms of writing an essay?

  22. How has your year been so far?

  23. Reflect on that.

  24. Or we maybe have some who have been to the 40th reunion this weekend,

  25. or maybe here for the fellowship this evening.

  26. And again, that's always a time of reflection.

  27. Maybe not just one year, but how have your years been so far?

  28. How has your life gone?

  29. What direction has it taken?

  30. Whatever age and stage we're at,

  31. there's always that time to reflect and to ask,

  32. well, how are things going for us?

  33. So how have things been this year?

  34. Sounds maybe like a bit of a survey question,

  35. where you're asked a variety of different questions.

  36. In a survey, they're trying to get to the crux of how things are going.

  37. For example, the nation that we live in every 10 years has a national census.

  38. It's a survey where there's a variety of different questions asked,

  39. and they're trying to ascertain just how the nation is going,

  40. what direction it's going in.

  41. And a lot of people get very excited about it,

  42. especially when they look at questions about faith.

  43. For some reason, people seem to enjoy finding out how faith is going,

  44. especially when, for the last number of years,

  45. the Christian faith, according to the census anyway, is in decline.

  46. It's said that between 1930 and 2010,

  47. the number of church members in the United Kingdom had reduced by 50%.

  48. The last census in 2021,

  49. it was said that for the first time in the history of these census,

  50. that Christianity had fallen below 50% of the nation identifying as Christian.

  51. It was down at 46%.

  52. So these kind of surveys, they tell us different things,

  53. but they don't always give a true reflection of everything that's going on.

  54. Just like when you have a house that may be going on the market, going for sale,

  55. you have to get a surveyor in to look at it.

  56. But the surveyor isn't able to tell everything about the house.

  57. You'll often see in a surveyor's report a line saying,

  58. I wasn't able to access a certain point.

  59. It may be the loft space.

  60. It may be under the floor, into the foundations.

  61. So the surveyor has only gone by what he can see.

  62. But in many ways, that might be missing the most important thing about that house.

  63. Maybe a foundation that is starting to crack,

  64. or a roof that is showing signs of decay.

  65. And so there's things that can be missed.

  66. A survey doesn't always tell us all the answers.

  67. But as we look at this passage here in Isaiah together this evening, Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  68. what we find here is Isaiah the prophet very much taking part in a survey of the nation,

  69. looking around and seeing what's happening in the land that he lives in,

  70. among the people that he is living with,

  71. and where he finds himself in all of this as well.

  72. And so it's an important time in his life,

  73. a time when he's looking around and taking stock.

  74. And we see that in many ways, it seems bleak for God's people.

  75. And even for Isaiah himself, it seems to be bleak in some ways.

  76. It's a time of sorrow,

  77. a situation in the land that's looking very difficult.

  78. But the deeper you go into his survey,

  79. you see that there is something else,

  80. and something greater to be seen.

  81. It reveals much about the situation that he's in.

  82. It reveals much about himself.

  83. But above all,

  84. this survey that he's doing reveals much more about God,

  85. and the need to lean on him.

  86. And Isaiah chapter 6 is very much a chapter

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  87. that we see turning from a sense of despair

  88. to a sense of delighting in God,

  89. even in the midst of very difficult situations.

  90. It's a time for reflection,

  91. a time for survey.

  92. As we see in the beginning of this chapter,

  93. it's about a significant year,

  94. in the year that King Uzziah died.

  95. And so there's a significance in that for us.

  96. It's a time of asking,

  97. how is their year going?

  98. How have their years gone?

  99. And what might lie ahead for them?

  100. And so as we look at Isaiah's survey

  101. of the situation here,

  102. we're going to see five things that he sees

  103. as he looks around,

  104. and as he looks at himself.

  105. We're going to see that there's an ache

  106. in his heart,

  107. and among the people.

  108. There's an ache.

  109. But we see then that there's an aura.

  110. There's a sense of seeing something significant

  111. in the midst of their ache.

  112. Then there's an awareness,

  113. an awareness of what is happening.

  114. Then there's an assurance

  115. of what their situation that they are in is about.

  116. And then we see finally,

  117. there's an availability from Isaiah.

  118. So there's five things that we're going to see

  119. together from this passage.

  120. And the first thing is an ache.

  121. There's an ache in his heart

  122. and the hearts of many of the people.

  123. And we see that in these opening words

  124. that tell us,

  125. in the year that King Uzziah died.

  126. What's the significance of this,

  127. you might ask?

  128. Is there any significance in it?

  129. Well, it is significant.

  130. I say I record that

  131. because this is an important point

  132. in their history,

  133. in their lives.

  134. in the year that King Uzziah died.

  135. So this is a point of reflecting

  136. this year that they are in,

  137. this point that they've come to.

  138. And it's significant

  139. because it's a time of great pain.

  140. Uzziah the king has died.

  141. And sometimes in the history

  142. of the Old Testament,

  143. you find that the king's passing

  144. would not cause pain and grief.

  145. It would cause rejoicing

  146. when the king was not a good king.

  147. And there was often the case

  148. where the king could be quite hard

  149. on the people

  150. and mistreat the people.

  151. But we find here that

  152. Uzziah had been a king

  153. who was a good king.

  154. And he had been a king

  155. for a very long time.

  156. He'd been a king

  157. for about 52 years.

  158. And he had been good

  159. for the people.

  160. The people had enjoyed

  161. much blessing

  162. under his reign.

  163. There was power.

  164. There was wealth.

  165. There was success.

  166. You could almost say

  167. unlike anything

  168. that experienced

  169. since the days of Solomon.

  170. There was a real period

  171. of blessing.

  172. And so this year,

  173. the year that King Uzziah died,

  174. was significant.

  175. It brought grief

  176. into their midst.

  177. It disturbed Isaiah.

  178. He records it here for us.

  179. This was a significant point

  180. in the year that King Uzziah died.

  181. Because his death signaled

  182. the end of a great period

  183. for these people.

  184. A period of prosperity.

  185. A period of spiritual consistency

  186. where he had led the people well.

  187. And now they were going

  188. into a period of change

  189. and a period of doubt.

  190. And it wasn't all good.

  191. It's evidence for that

  192. when you see the first five chapters

  193. that things were changing.

  194. That things were going to go

  195. in a different direction

  196. for the people.

  197. There's evidence of it

  198. in chapter 6

  199. at the end of the chapter

  200. when it's speaking

  201. about the people

  202. then being taken

  203. into foreign lands.

  204. So it's evidence here

  205. that this year

  206. in which King Uzziah died

  207. was an important year.

  208. A significant year.

  209. And so there was change

  210. in their midst.

  211. They had been looking

  212. towards Uzziah

  213. in dependence.

  214. Depending on him

  215. as their king.

  216. Depending on him

  217. as the one

  218. who was going to lead them well.

  219. And that as long as

  220. he was there

  221. then things were going

  222. to be well with them.

  223. In the year

  224. that King Uzziah died

  225. things changed.

  226. What can we say

  227. about it ourselves

  228. when we think of the years

  229. in which we're living in

  230. just now.

  231. Even this year

  232. 2026.

  233. We could maybe reflect

  234. on this year

  235. in many different ways

  236. and look at

  237. maybe our own

  238. individual lives

  239. and say things like

  240. well in this year

  241. when I was given

  242. a bad diagnosis.

  243. In this year

  244. when I lost my job.

  245. In this year

  246. when my heart

  247. was troubled

  248. in many different ways.

  249. Or we could look at it

  250. in a more wider sense

  251. as well.

  252. In this year

  253. when we have seen

  254. everything taking place

  255. in the Middle East.

  256. In this year

  257. when we are seeing again

  258. the prices of everything

  259. going in such a direction

  260. that it causes

  261. much worry

  262. and concern.

  263. There's so many things

  264. that are happening

  265. around us.

  266. We can reflect

  267. on this year already

  268. in a short space of time

  269. that's seen

  270. a lot of change.

  271. And when we see that

  272. we ask ourselves

  273. what does that do

  274. to us?

  275. Where does it take us?

  276. How do we feel

  277. in the midst of it?

  278. In the sense of

  279. all of these things

  280. changing.

  281. For I say

  282. in the year

  283. that King Uzziah died

  284. caused him

  285. great concern.

  286. And as we look

  287. at our year

  288. and we see

  289. all of these changes

  290. taking place

  291. does it cause us

  292. does it cause you

  293. concern?

  294. Because it makes us ask

  295. well what is

  296. the foundation

  297. of our life?

  298. The foundation

  299. for the nation

  300. as Isaiah

  301. is looking at here

  302. you might think

  303. initially

  304. is Uzziah.

  305. That he was the one

  306. who was important

  307. to everything

  308. and that's the way

  309. it would seem.

  310. It was significant

  311. and for ourselves

  312. the foundation

  313. of our lives

  314. may have been

  315. a loved one.

  316. It may have been

  317. a job.

  318. It may have been

  319. the money that we have.

  320. It may have been

  321. the peace

  322. that was relative

  323. around the world.

  324. But when things

  325. begin to change

  326. suddenly these foundations

  327. are shaken

  328. and they make us

  329. ask questions.

  330. What is

  331. your foundation

  332. as you look

  333. at the year

  334. in which you're living?

  335. Well for Isaiah

  336. it was

  337. Uzziah

  338. was important

  339. he was important

  340. for the people.

  341. So there was

  342. an ache

  343. a hurt

  344. when Uzziah

  345. died.

  346. But where did

  347. that take them?

  348. Where did it

  349. take Isaiah?

  350. Well it takes us

  351. to our second point

  352. where we see

  353. that there was

  354. an aura.

  355. There was an aura.

  356. In the year

  357. that King Uzziah

  358. died

  359. where did he look?

  360. Well he goes on

  361. to say

  362. I saw the Lord

  363. sitting upon

  364. a throne

  365. high

  366. and lifted up.

  367. In the year

  368. that King

  369. Uzziah

  370. died

  371. Isaiah

  372. saw

  373. a greater

  374. aura.

  375. He saw

  376. the Lord

  377. sitting

  378. upon the throne

  379. high

  380. and lifted

  381. up.

  382. So in the midst

  383. of the pain

  384. of Uzziah's

  385. death

  386. and the doubts

  387. about the future

  388. what it might

  389. hold

  390. there is a reminder

  391. that Isaiah

  392. sees.

  393. It is the Lord

  394. that is sovereign

  395. and overruling

  396. in all things.

  397. It is the Lord

  398. that is in control.

  399. and as we look

  400. around ourselves

  401. this evening

  402. and in this

  403. year

  404. or in all

  405. our years

  406. through all

  407. the different

  408. changes

  409. through all

  410. the different

  411. directions

  412. we have

  413. gone

  414. through all

  415. the different

  416. ups and

  417. downs

  418. when so often

  419. we have maybe

  420. just looked

  421. to ourselves

  422. looked to

  423. our own

  424. wisdom

  425. our own

  426. understanding

  427. of things

  428. maybe we are

  429. being taken

  430. to the point

  431. where we begin

  432. to see

  433. something

  434. different

  435. something else

  436. where our eyes

  437. should have

  438. always been

  439. fixed upon

  440. and that is

  441. the aura

  442. of God

  443. the Lord

  444. sitting

  445. upon

  446. a throne.

  447. You get the sense

  448. here that the people

  449. had lost their vision

  450. of the Lord

  451. you get it so often

  452. throughout the Old Testament

  453. where things went

  454. into decline

  455. it is because

  456. they took their eyes

  457. of God

  458. away from God

  459. they started

  460. to look to

  461. idols

  462. and false

  463. gods

  464. of their own

  465. wisdom

  466. and that is

  467. when things

  468. went wrong

  469. and perhaps

  470. even a good

  471. king like

  472. Uzziah

  473. was making

  474. them take

  475. their eyes

  476. off the Lord

  477. and so

  478. Uzziah's

  479. death

  480. was perhaps

  481. maybe a good

  482. thing

  483. in that sense

  484. because it

  485. made them

  486. look

  487. somewhere else

  488. and look

  489. to the Lord

  490. Isaiah

  491. is reminded

  492. who is

  493. really in

  494. control

  495. Uzziah

  496. might have

  497. been a good

  498. king

  499. but he was

  500. a king

  501. appointed

  502. by God

  503. and used

  504. by God

  505. and so

  506. Isaiah

  507. here is being

  508. reminded

  509. that when

  510. we look

  511. around

  512. and we see

  513. turmoil

  514. on the surface

  515. the ache

  516. the pain

  517. of Uzziah's

  518. death

  519. and the uncertainty

  520. that it brings

  521. it brings him

  522. to a greater

  523. place

  524. that the Lord

  525. is sovereign

  526. sitting

  527. on his

  528. throne

  529. and what

  530. did he

  531. see

  532. of the

  533. Lord

  534. well you

  535. see that

  536. there's three

  537. things that he

  538. saw of the

  539. Lord

  540. first of all

  541. he saw

  542. his position

  543. Isaiah

  544. saw the

  545. Lord

  546. sitting

  547. upon the

  548. throne

  549. so there

  550. was this

  551. sovereignty

  552. there's a

  553. peace

  554. in that

  555. there's an

  556. assurance

  557. in that

  558. an earthly

  559. king may

  560. have died

  561. but the

  562. Lord

  563. still

  564. reigned

  565. he saw

  566. the Lord

  567. in all

  568. his glory

  569. and it

  570. had a

  571. profound

  572. impact

  573. on Isaiah

  574. he lifted

  575. his eyes

  576. up

  577. I saw

  578. the Lord

  579. high

  580. and lifted

  581. up

  582. and so in

  583. the midst

  584. of everything

  585. going on

  586. in your

  587. life just

  588. now are

  589. you lifting

  590. your eyes

  591. up to

  592. God

  593. and faith

  594. as the

  595. Lord shakes

  596. our lives

  597. in different

  598. ways

  599. take things

  600. from us

  601. removes

  602. foundations

  603. that we

  604. were relying

  605. on

  606. are we

  607. lifting

  608. our eyes

  609. to God

  610. and faith

  611. and seeing

  612. that he

  613. is sovereign

  614. he saw

  615. us well

  616. he saw

  617. God's

  618. personality

  619. how did

  620. he see

  621. this

  622. well he

  623. sees it

  624. as you

  625. hear

  626. the angelic

  627. beings

  628. saying

  629. holy

  630. holy

  631. holy

  632. is the

  633. Lord

  634. of hosts

  635. the whole

  636. earth

  637. is filled

  638. with his

  639. glory

  640. there was

  641. that sense

  642. that he

  643. could see

  644. the glory

  645. of God

  646. not the

  647. glory of

  648. usiah

  649. as a good

  650. king

  651. but the

  652. glory

  653. of God

  654. and Isaiah

  655. understood

  656. that usiah

  657. might have

  658. been a good

  659. king

  660. but the

  661. Lord

  662. is a

  663. holy

  664. holy

  665. holy

  666. God

  667. he is

  668. far

  669. greater

  670. and he

  671. is the

  672. one who

  673. deserves

  674. all glory

  675. and praise

  676. and so

  677. when your

  678. life is

  679. stripped

  680. bare

  681. as we

  682. would say

  683. when the

  684. rug is

  685. pulled from

  686. under your

  687. feet

  688. and things

  689. are shaken

  690. in your

  691. life

  692. what do

  693. you have

  694. do you

  695. have that

  696. vision of

  697. God

  698. who is

  699. holy

  700. holy

  701. holy

  702. that security

  703. with God

  704. I say

  705. I learned

  706. it's not

  707. about

  708. Isaiah

  709. it's not

  710. about

  711. himself

  712. it's

  713. all

  714. about

  715. God

  716. that

  717. he

  718. is

  719. the

  720. one

  721. who

  722. deserves

  723. that

  724. place

  725. of

  726. glory

  727. in

  728. our

  729. lives

  730. so

  731. are

  732. you

  733. giving

  734. him

  735. that

  736. glory

  737. he

  738. saw

  739. his

  740. personality

  741. he

  742. also

  743. saw

  744. his

  745. presence

  746. you see

  747. that

  748. in

  749. verse

  750. four

  751. the

  752. foundations

  753. of the

  754. threshold

  755. shook

  756. at the

  757. voice

  758. of him

  759. who

  760. called

  761. and the

  762. house

  763. was

  764. filled

  765. with

  766. smoke

  767. there

  768. was

  769. a

  770. sense

  771. of

  772. the

  773. presence

  774. of

  775. God

  776. so

  777. Isaiah

  778. was

  779. gone

  780. but

  781. there

  782. was

  783. this

  784. assurance

  785. that

  786. God

  787. was

  788. there

  789. God

  790. was

  791. with

  792. him

  793. God

  794. was

  795. with

  796. his

  797. people

  798. he's

  799. reminded

  800. powerfully

  801. of

  802. that

  803. he

  804. might

  805. have

  806. felt

  807. forsaken

  808. in that

  809. sense

  810. of

  811. the

  812. loss

  813. of

  814. Isaiah

  815. but

  816. it

  817. only

  818. brought

  819. him

  820. to

  821. see

  822. more

  823. of

  824. the

  825. glory

  826. of

  827. God

  828. and

  829. the

  830. presence

  831. of

  832. God

  833. as a

  834. great

  835. reminder

  836. there

  837. for

  838. us

  839. we

  840. can

  841. be

  842. a

  843. people

  844. who

  845. feel

  846. lonely

  847. at

  848. times

  849. we

  850. can

  851. feel

  852. isolated

  853. we

  854. can

  855. feel

  856. afraid

  857. and

  858. maybe

  859. you

  860. have

  861. that

  862. sense

  863. maybe

  864. you

  865. are

  866. one

  867. of

  868. these

  869. people

  870. who

  871. feels

  872. a

  873. sense

  874. of

  875. loneliness

  876. tonight

  877. but

  878. there's

  879. that

  880. great

  881. reminder

  882. to

  883. us

  884. here

  885. this

  886. great

  887. truth

  888. that

  889. if

  890. we

  891. are

  892. saved

  893. if

  894. we

  895. are

  896. belonging

  897. to

  898. God

  899. we

  900. are

  901. never

  902. alone

  903. you

  904. are

  905. never

  906. alone

  907. because

  908. his

  909. presence

  910. is

  911. promised

  912. that

  913. aura

  914. of

  915. God

  916. is

  917. there

  918. for

  919. his

  920. people

  921. at

  922. all

  923. times

  924. he

  925. is

  926. with

  927. us

  928. always

  929. that's

  930. the

  931. promise

  932. that

  933. we

  934. have

  935. in

  936. the

  937. Lord

  938. Jesus

  939. Christ

  940. as

  941. he

  942. gave

  943. that

  944. great

  945. commission

  946. lo I

  947. am

  948. with

  949. you

  950. always

  951. even

  952. to

  953. the

  954. end

  955. of

  956. the

  957. age

  958. there

  959. is

  960. that

  961. presence

  962. that

  963. aura

  964. of

  965. God

  966. that

  967. we

  968. can

  969. know

  970. in

  971. our

  972. own

  973. lives

  974. as

  975. we

  976. look

  977. to

  978. him

  979. so

  980. are

  981. you

  982. lonely

  983. this

  984. evening

  985. well

  986. you

  987. can

  988. know

  989. that

  990. as

  991. you

  992. look

  993. to

  994. God

  995. as

  996. you

  997. lift

  998. up

  999. your

  1000. voice

  1001. your

  1002. eyes

  1003. to

  1004. God

  1005. as

  1006. you

  1007. see

  1008. he

  1009. is

  1010. sovereign

  1011. he

  1012. is

  1013. present

  1014. he

  1015. is

  1016. holy

  1017. he

  1018. is

  1019. all

  1020. of

  1021. these

  1022. things

  1023. and

  1024. he

  1025. is

  1026. it

  1027. for

  1028. you

  1029. that

  1030. you

  1031. might

  1032. know

  1033. him

  1034. with

  1035. you

  1036. the

  1037. third

  1038. thing

  1039. we

  1040. see

  1041. here

  1042. is

  1043. an

  1044. awareness

  1045. how

  1046. did

  1047. I

  1048. say

  1049. I

  1050. respond

  1051. in

  1052. as

  1053. he

  1054. saw

  1055. the

  1056. glory

  1057. of

  1058. God

  1059. what

  1060. did

  1061. it

  1062. do

  1063. for

  1064. him

  1065. well

  1066. it

  1067. made

  1068. him

  1069. realize

  1070. what

  1071. he

  1072. had

  1073. been

  1074. relying

  1075. on

  1076. he

  1077. had

  1078. been

  1079. relying

  1080. on

  1081. his

  1082. earthly

  1083. king

  1084. he

  1085. had

  1086. been

  1087. relying

  1088. on

  1089. usiah

  1090. for

  1091. things

  1092. to

  1093. go

  1094. well

  1095. for

  1096. him

  1097. and

  1098. for

  1099. the

  1100. people

  1101. of

  1102. God

  1103. instead

  1104. of

  1105. looking

  1106. to

  1107. the

  1108. heavenly

  1109. king

  1110. to

  1111. God

  1112. in

  1113. heaven

  1114. and

  1115. the

  1116. king

  1117. that

  1118. is

  1119. secure

  1120. on

  1121. his

  1122. throne

  1123. there

  1124. so

  1125. what

  1126. he

  1127. realizes

  1128. now

  1129. is

  1130. seeing

  1131. the

  1132. glory

  1133. of

  1134. God

  1135. is

  1136. his

  1137. error

  1138. he

  1139. becomes

  1140. aware

  1141. of

  1142. his

  1143. error

  1144. you

  1145. see

  1146. that

  1147. in

  1148. verse

  1149. 5

  1150. look at

  1151. his

  1152. response

  1153. to

  1154. everything

  1155. that

  1156. he

  1157. has

  1158. seen

  1159. in

  1160. verse

  1161. 5

  1162. woe

  1163. is

  1164. me

  1165. for

  1166. I

  1167. am

  1168. lost

  1169. that's

  1170. his

  1171. response

  1172. in

  1173. verse

  1174. 5

  1175. woe

  1176. is

  1177. me

  1178. for

  1179. I

  1180. am

  1181. lost

  1182. I

  1183. say

  1184. I

  1185. probably

  1186. thought

  1187. all

  1188. was

  1189. well

  1190. in

  1191. his

  1192. life

  1193. enjoying

  1194. that

  1195. peace

  1196. that

  1197. the

  1198. king

  1199. usiah

  1200. had

  1201. brought

  1202. the

  1203. blessings

  1204. that

  1205. had

  1206. been

  1207. many

  1208. he

  1209. thought

  1210. all

  1211. was

  1212. well

  1213. but

  1214. when

  1215. usiah

  1216. was

  1217. taken

  1218. away

  1219. he

  1220. was

  1221. made

  1222. aware

  1223. of

  1224. his

  1225. own

  1226. short

  1227. comings

  1228. he

  1229. says

  1230. I

  1231. am

  1232. lost

  1233. what

  1234. he's

  1235. saying

  1236. is

  1237. I

  1238. am

  1239. as

  1240. good

  1241. as

  1242. dead

  1243. when

  1244. I

  1245. am

  1246. relying

  1247. on

  1248. earthly

  1249. things

  1250. for

  1251. my

  1252. life

  1253. for

  1254. my

  1255. salvation

  1256. for

  1257. everything

  1258. that

  1259. I

  1260. need

  1261. if

  1262. I

  1263. am

  1264. putting

  1265. my

  1266. trust

  1267. in

  1268. these

  1269. things

  1270. I

  1271. am

  1272. lost

  1273. woe

  1274. is

  1275. me

  1276. and

  1277. what

  1278. has

  1279. made

  1280. him

  1281. aware

  1282. of

  1283. this

  1284. is

  1285. the

  1286. glory

  1287. of

  1288. God

  1289. when

  1290. you're

  1291. driving

  1292. at

  1293. night

  1294. and

  1295. we

  1296. see

  1297. it

  1298. maybe

  1299. more

  1300. so

  1301. now

  1302. with

  1303. the

  1304. cars

  1305. that

  1306. are

  1307. coming

  1308. towards

  1309. us

  1310. and

  1311. the

  1312. brightness

  1313. of

  1314. their

  1315. lights

  1316. it

  1317. can

  1318. be

  1319. hard

  1320. sometimes

  1321. to

  1322. see

  1323. where

  1324. you're

  1325. going

  1326. the

  1327. lights

  1328. are

  1329. shining

  1330. so

  1331. brightly

  1332. you

  1333. almost

  1334. have

  1335. to

  1336. come

  1337. to

  1338. a

  1339. stop

  1340. sometimes

  1341. to

  1342. make

  1343. sure

  1344. that

  1345. you're

  1346. staying

  1347. well

  1348. imagine

  1349. what

  1350. the

  1351. glory

  1352. of

  1353. God

  1354. does

  1355. how

  1356. that

  1357. stops

  1358. us

  1359. in

  1360. our

  1361. tracks

  1362. we

  1363. see

  1364. it

  1365. here

  1366. with

  1367. Isaiah

  1368. he

  1369. has

  1370. just

  1371. stopped

  1372. in

  1373. his

  1374. tracks

  1375. the

  1376. glory

  1377. of

  1378. God

  1379. all

  1380. that

  1381. he

  1382. is

  1383. seeing

  1384. and

  1385. he

  1386. comes

  1387. to

  1388. the

  1389. point

  1390. and

  1391. says

  1392. woe

  1393. is

  1394. me

  1395. for

  1396. I

  1397. am

  1398. lost

  1399. it

  1400. has

  1401. stopped

  1402. him

  1403. and

  1404. that's

  1405. what

  1406. the

  1407. word

  1408. of

  1409. God

  1410. does

  1411. to

  1412. us

  1413. to

  1414. this

  1415. day

  1416. maybe

  1417. it's

  1418. doing

  1419. it

  1420. has

  1421. been

  1422. for

  1423. some

  1424. time

  1425. it's

  1426. making

  1427. you

  1428. stop

  1429. in

  1430. your

  1431. tracks

  1432. and

  1433. all

  1434. you

  1435. can

  1436. say

  1437. is

  1438. the

  1439. same

  1440. as

  1441. I

  1442. say

  1443. a

  1444. woe

  1445. is

  1446. me

  1447. for

  1448. I

  1449. am

  1450. lost

  1451. because

  1452. the

  1453. word

  1454. of

  1455. God

  1456. makes

  1457. us

  1458. aware

  1459. of

  1460. our

  1461. lostness

  1462. it

  1463. makes

  1464. us

  1465. aware

  1466. of

  1467. where

  1468. we

  1469. are

  1470. in

  1471. this

  1472. year

  1473. and

  1474. in

  1475. every

  1476. year

  1477. it

  1478. brings

  1479. us

  1480. to

  1481. realize

  1482. where

  1483. we

  1484. stand

  1485. before

  1486. God

  1487. and

  1488. if

  1489. we

  1490. are

  1491. relying

  1492. on

  1493. the

  1494. world

  1495. when

  1496. we

  1497. survey

  1498. our

  1499. lives

  1500. when

  1501. we

  1502. survey

  1503. our

  1504. situations

  1505. when

  1506. we

  1507. think

  1508. do

  1509. I

  1510. have

  1511. God

  1512. in

  1513. my

  1514. life

  1515. am

  1516. I

  1517. trusting

  1518. in

  1519. the

  1520. Lord

  1521. Jesus

  1522. Christ

  1523. for

  1524. my

  1525. salvation

  1526. if

  1527. not

  1528. well

  1529. we

  1530. can

  1531. only

  1532. say

  1533. woe

  1534. is

  1535. me

  1536. for

  1537. I

  1538. am

  1539. lost

  1540. the

  1541. glory

  1542. of

  1543. God

  1544. brings

  1545. this

  1546. revelation

  1547. to

  1548. Isaiah

  1549. and

  1550. the

  1551. word

  1552. of

  1553. God

  1554. the

  1555. glory

  1556. of

  1557. God

  1558. that

  1559. speaks

  1560. to

  1561. us

  1562. through

  1563. it

  1564. makes

  1565. the

  1566. same

  1567. through

  1568. for

  1569. ourselves

  1570. it

  1571. makes

  1572. us

  1573. realize

  1574. that

  1575. apart

  1576. from

  1577. God

  1578. we

  1579. are

  1580. indeed

  1581. lost

  1582. but

  1583. where

  1584. was

  1585. Isaiah

  1586. here

  1587. he

  1588. wasn't

  1589. turning

  1590. away

  1591. from

  1592. God

  1593. he

  1594. was

  1595. looking

  1596. towards

  1597. God

  1598. God

  1599. and

  1600. so

  1601. it

  1602. is

  1603. good

  1604. for

  1605. us

  1606. to

  1607. be

  1608. looking

  1609. towards

  1610. God

  1611. it

  1612. is

  1613. good

  1614. for

  1615. us

  1616. to

  1617. be

  1618. coming

  1619. under

  1620. the

  1621. word

  1622. of

  1623. God

  1624. when

  1625. it

  1626. makes

  1627. us

  1628. stop

  1629. in

  1630. our

  1631. tracks

  1632. and

  1633. when

  1634. it

  1635. makes

  1636. us

  1637. look

  1638. at

  1639. our

  1640. lives

  1641. and

  1642. makes

  1643. us

  1644. realize

  1645. we

  1646. are

  1647. indeed

  1648. lost

  1649. because

  1650. if we

  1651. don't

  1652. realize

  1653. this

  1654. nothing

  1655. changes

  1656. if we

  1657. just

  1658. carry

  1659. on

  1660. as if

  1661. life

  1662. is

  1663. fine

  1664. nothing

  1665. changes

  1666. and

  1667. sometimes

  1668. it

  1669. takes

  1670. a

  1671. moment

  1672. or

  1673. a

  1674. circumstance

  1675. or a

  1676. providence

  1677. in our

  1678. lives

  1679. to make

  1680. us

  1681. stop

  1682. and

  1683. take

  1684. stock

  1685. and

  1686. see

  1687. what

  1688. is

  1689. important

  1690. had

  1691. Isaiah

  1692. not

  1693. died

  1694. perhaps

  1695. Isaiah

  1696. and the

  1697. others

  1698. would have

  1699. carried

  1700. on

  1701. as

  1702. aware

  1703. thinking

  1704. we

  1705. are

  1706. fine

  1707. as

  1708. long

  1709. as

  1710. we

  1711. have

  1712. Isaiah

  1713. and

  1714. we

  1715. can

  1716. carry

  1717. on

  1718. in

  1719. our

  1720. lives

  1721. thinking

  1722. I'm

  1723. fine

  1724. as

  1725. long

  1726. as

  1727. I

  1728. have

  1729. my

  1730. health

  1731. my

  1732. work

  1733. my

  1734. family

  1735. and

  1736. all

  1737. of

  1738. these

  1739. things

  1740. but

  1741. when

  1742. they

  1743. are

  1744. taken

  1745. from

  1746. us

  1747. that

  1748. is

  1749. when

  1750. we

  1751. become

  1752. more

  1753. aware

  1754. woe

  1755. is

  1756. me

  1757. for

  1758. I

  1759. am

  1760. lost

  1761. we

  1762. see

  1763. the

  1764. wonder

  1765. of

  1766. God

  1767. here

  1768. though

  1769. you

  1770. see

  1771. God

  1772. in

  1773. his

  1774. words

  1775. speaking

  1776. and

  1777. you

  1778. see

  1779. him

  1780. pointing

  1781. !

  1782. us

  1783. towards

  1784. himself

  1785. and

  1786. towards

  1787. all

  1788. that

  1789. he

  1790. would

  1791. do

  1792. for

  1793. us

  1794. because

  1795. when

  1796. we

  1797. think

  1798. of

  1799. these

  1800. words

  1801. woe

  1802. is

  1803. me

  1804. for

  1805. I

  1806. am

  1807. lost

  1808. we

  1809. think

  1810. of

  1811. our

  1812. condition

  1813. and

  1814. sin

  1815. that

  1816. we

  1817. are

  1818. a

  1819. lost

  1820. people

  1821. and

  1822. if

  1823. we

  1824. are

  1825. lost

  1826. we

  1827. need

  1828. a

  1829. savior

  1830. who

1831. Zacchaeus in the sermon this morning. And we're reminded that the Lord Jesus came to seek and to

1832. save the lost. The lost. And so in the midst of everything that's changing and becoming aware of

1833. our situation, that is a good thing. Because we see here it leads to the next point, which is

1834. an assurance. An assurance. And that's what Isaiah is given here as well. Because he says,

1835. Woe is me, for I am lost. I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of

1836. unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. He has seen the glory of God.

1837. He has seen how lost he is in the midst of it. But then he is given an assurance.

1838. And what is the assurance that he's given? Well, the assurance that he has given is that as he draws

1839. near to God, God draws near to him. And that's the assurance that we can have this evening as well.

1840. That when we begin to realize and become aware of our lostness, our sin, and how we are destined to be

1841. lost for eternity in it, well, it leads us to see our only hope is through God and his word and a

1842. Savior who is Christ Jesus. And so the assurance that we come to see is that God will not turn us away,

1843. but that God is seeking after those who are lost. You see it in the Old Testament. You see it in the

1844. New Testament. And for example, Nehemiah chapter 1 verse 9 and 10, But if you return to me and keep my

    Nehemiah 1:9

1845. commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will

1846. gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen. So we can go so far away from God.

1847. We can be like that prodigal son who has just gone far away from his father, but God can still reach out.

1848. There's an awareness, and then we come to that assurance that God will not turn us away.

1849. Jesus tells us that in the Gospel of John chapter 6 verse 37,

    John 6:37

1850. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

1851. There's great assurance in that. Where do we go with our lostness? We go to Christ.

1852. And as we come to Christ, we are assured, whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

1853. And what did Isaiah find as he came to God? That he was full of glory, that God was full of glory,

1854. that he was lost and unclean, but ultimately he found that God could save. Because you read in verse 6,

1855. Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongues from the altar.

1856. And he touched my mouth and said, Behold, this has touched your lips. Your guilt is taken away, and your sin is atoned for.

1857. So he has given assurance. So he has given assurance. What great assurance there is for us as we come to God,

1858. that he is the one who is able to forgive us our sins. He came with a coal, a burning coal, and touched his lips.

1859. Your sin is atoned for. Where do we go?

1860. Where do we look for that atonement, that our sin being forgiven?

1861. We look to the cross.

1862. We look to the place where Christ died in our place,

1863. that we might have salvation through him.

1864. In 2 Corinthians 3, verse 18, Paul says there,

    2 Corinthians 3:18

1865. There is a work going on in God's people as we look to him being turned from one degree of glory to another.

1866. Little by little, being made like Jesus.

1867. Seeing his glory more and more.

1868. Being transformed into his likeness.

1869. That assurance that we have that the more we look to him,

1870. the more we see our sin,

1871. but the more we see our salvation

1872. in what he has done for us.

1873. And so for us today, we behold God's glory in Jesus Christ.

1874. Christ crucified for his people.

1875. We look to the cross.

1876. When we speak of surveying everything that's going on around us,

1877. looking at the year in which we live in,

  1878. where can we turn?

1879. We can survey the cross.

1880. As the hymn writer says,

1881. When I survey the wondrous cross on which the prince of glory died,

  1882. my riches gain,

1883. I count but loss and poor contempt on all my pride.

1884. That is what Isaiah was doing here.

1885. His pride was in the king who was Isaiah,

  1886. who was taken away.

1887. But it takes him to put all that aside

1888. and look to the glory of God.

1889. So where are you looking this evening?

  1890. For that assurance.

  1891. For that hope.

  1892. For today.

  1893. For tomorrow.

  1894. For all eternity.

1895. As you see your lostness.

1896. As you are able to say, like I say,

  1897. A woe is me.

  1898. For I am lost.

  1899. Where do you go?

1900. Well, you can go to the cross.

  1901. And to Jesus Christ.

1902. Pour contempt on all your pride.

1903. Everything you have count as loss.

1904. Compared to the riches that are in Christ.

1905. Find that assurance in him.

1906. Well, the fifth and final thing we see here is

1907. where it leads, I say.

  1908. Isaiah.

1909. And what we see is an availability.

1910. Because a great vision of God and his glory,

1911. as somebody said, inspires us in the mission of God.

1912. And when you look at Isaiah here,

1913. when you see his sin atoned for,

1914. in verse 8 then it goes on to say,

1915. And I heard the voice of the Lord saying,

  1916. Whom shall I send?

1917. And who will go for us?

  1918. Then I said,

  1919. Here am I.

  1920. Send me.

  1921. Here am I.

  1922. Send me.

  1923. What a changed.

  1924. It's just a few verses before,

1925. when Isaiah is showing where he stands.

1926. Woe is me, for I am lost.

  1927. I'm a man of unclean lips.

1928. Well, he's seen the glory of God.

  1929. He's seen his lostness.

1930. But he's been given that assurance of his sin atoned for.

  1931. And so what now?

1932. Well, he makes himself available.

  1933. Here am I.

  1934. Send me.

1935. He was made right with God.

1936. And so, instead of now surveying the hopelessness of everything around him,

  1937. and the despair,

  1938. Isaiah was dead.

1939. All the blessings that they've enjoyed,

1940. they were gone in many ways.

1941. But his survey takes him deeper.

1942. And now he realizes it's about the Lord who is sovereign.

1943. And as we look at the world in which we live in,

1944. and as we see everything that can make us afraid,

1945. let's just see that that is just the surface.

1946. Because the depths of the foundation of this world are a sovereign God.

1947. And we are to make ourselves available to him.

1948. So are you making yourself available?

1949. Are you giving yourself over into the hands of this sovereign God?

  1950. Just like Isaiah saying,

  1951. Here am I.

  1952. Send me.

1953. You don't know what he's going to send you out for.

1954. But he has a purpose for every one of his people.

1955. He has a use for every one of his people.

1956. It may be something that seems small and insignificant,

1957. but yet it is to be faithful to God,

  1958. and just to say,

  1959. Here am I.

  1960. Send me.

1961. To make ourselves available for him.

1962. That is what is key.

1963. That is what Isaiah did here.

1964. And that is what many of God's people have done.

  1965. In the year 1903,

  1966. late in that year,

1967. there was a pastor in West Wales

1968. who had become very grieved

1969. over the worldliness among young people

1970. and a lack of devotion to the Lord Jesus among the young people.

1971. And this burden kept growing on him.

1972. And so he arranged at New Year time

  1973. a special two-day youth event

1974. so that the young people could come together.

1975. And they were coming under the Word of God.

1976. The Word of God was to be preached.

  1977. And messages were preached

1978. that spoke to the hearts of the young people

1979. and made a deep impression on them,

1980. especially on one young girl,

  1981. a teenage girl.

1982. She was called Flory Evans.

  1983. She was challenged

1984. by the preaching of God's Word that she heard.

1985. And God's Word would not go away from her.

  1986. And a month later,

1987. she found herself at crisis point.

1988. And so she asked to meet with the pastor

  1989. and speak with him.

1990. And she spoke to him

1991. about how God's Word had been speaking to him.

1992. And she felt herself lost in life.

  1993. She was in despair.

  1994. And she was saying,

1995. I cannot live like this.

1996. And the pastor asked her a question.

  1997. He said,

  1998. Could you say,

  1999. My Lord,

2000. to the Lord Jesus Christ?

2001. And she began to ponder this question deeply.

  2002. Could she say,

2003. The Lord Jesus is my Lord?

2004. And that's what kept working away at her.

2005. Until she came to the point

2006. where she was able to say,

  2007. He is my Lord.

  2008. She was converted.

2009. God had given her a new heart.

2010. And a heart for the Lord.

2011. And obedience to him was her new life.

2012. And God would soon use this young girl

  2013. in a powerful way.

2014. It was at the end of February

  2015. on a Sunday night.

2016. And it was after a sermon that evening

2017. where the young people were gathered together.

2018. And the pastor asked them a question

2019. to all the people there.

2020. What does Jesus mean to you?

2021. And he was waiting for a few moments

2022. to see if anyone would speak.

  2023. And there was silence.

2024. Until, after a few moments,

  2025. Flory stood up.

  2026. And she said,

2027. I love the Lord Jesus with all my heart.

2028. It's all she could say.

2029. I love the Lord Jesus with all my heart.

2030. But that expression of love

  2031. in that room touched

2032. many of the other people's hearts.

2033. And that sense of conviction

2034. started to spread among the young people.

2035. And many started to be converted.

2036. Flory's simple testimony that night

2037. began to move among the people.

  2038. And at that time,

2039. the Welsh revival of 1904, 1905 began.

2040. Did it begin with her?

  2041. No.

2042. Because it was all of God.

  2043. But God used her.

  2044. And her testimony.

  2045. Just those few words.

2046. What does Jesus mean to you?

2047. I love the Lord Jesus with all of my heart.

  2048. He used her.

  2049. Because she said,

  2050. Here am I.

2051. She could not hold it in.

2052. Isaiah could not hold it in.

  2053. Here am I.

  2054. Send me.

2055. And so God sent him.

2056. And sent him into a very difficult situation.

2057. But God used him mightily.

2058. And God can use any one of us

  2059. in a mighty way.

2060. And so as we look at this year

2061. in which King Uzziah died,

2062. in all the uncertainty that it brought,

  2063. in all the pain,

2064. the ache that there was,

2065. what it brought Isaiah to see,

2066. was the glory of God.

  2067. And may our year,

2068. may your year just now,

2069. may your point in life just now,

  2070. bring you to see

2071. that there is no foundation in this world

  2072. that is secure

  2073. other than the salvation

2074. that is found by God giving his son.

2075. May we see our lostness,

  2076. as Isaiah says,

  2077. Woe is me,

  2078. for I am lost.

2079. But may we see with assurance

2080. that he is able to save our sin

  2081. as atoned for

2082. through what has been done at the cross.

2083. And may we then come

  2084. to say,

  2085. Here am I.

  2086. Send me.

  2087. Lord, use us.

  2088. Whatever plan,

  2089. whatever purpose you have

2090. for every one of us,

  2091. may we say,

  2092. Here am I.

  2093. Send me.

  2094. Let us pray.

  2095. Lord, our gracious God,

2096. we thank you that your word

  2097. is an active word,

  2098. a living word,

2099. a word that gives us assurance

2100. in the midst of the most difficult times,

2101. in the midst of most uncertain times.

  2102. As Isaiah experienced that

2103. in the year that King Uzziah died,

2104. may we look at our own years

  2105. and say,

2106. In the midst of all that goes on around us,

2107. may we see the Lord

  2108. high and lifted up.

2109. May we see his glory,

  2110. your glory,

  2111. in our midst.

2112. And may we see it working in our hearts

  2113. to see us coming

  2114. to recognize our lostness,

2115. but the salvation that you give

  2116. through Jesus Christ.

2117. So we ask all of these things

  2118. for your glory

  2119. and for your sake.

  2120. Amen.

  2121. We're going to conclude

2122. by singing to God's praise

  2123. in Psalm 116.

  2124. The Sing Psalms version,

  2125. page 154.

  2126. Psalm 116,

  2127. we'll sing from verse 1

  2128. to verse 9.

  2129. I love the Lord

2130. because he heard my voice.

2131. He listened when I cried to him for aid.

2132. I'll call on him as long as I shall live

2133. because he turned to hear me when I prayed.

2134. The tune is even tied.

2135. We stand to sing verse 1 to 9.

  2136. I love the Lord

  2137. I love the Lord

2138. because he heard my voice.

2139. He listened when I cried to him for aid.

2140. I'll call on him as long as I shall live.

2141. because he turned to hear me when I prayed.

  2142. The court of death

2143. with grip and entangled thee

2144. upon me came the anguish of the grave.

  2145. With grief and trouble

  2146. I was overcome

2147. Then on the name of God

  2148. I called

  2149. Lord save

  2150. The Lord our God

  2151. is

  2152. strengthened

  2153. full of grace

  2154. Both righteous

  2155. and compassionate

  2156. The Lord protects

2157. all those of childlike faith

2158. When I was in grave

2159. When I was in grave need

  2160. He rescued me

  2161. Rest, O my soul

2162. God, I speak with you

  2163. For you, O Lord

2164. I've saved my soul from death

  2165. My feet from stumbling

2166. And my eyes from tears

2167. That I may live for you

  2168. While I have breath

  2169. After the benediction

2170. I'll go to the door to my left

2171. We'll close with the benediction

2172. Now may grace, mercy and peace

2173. from God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit

2174. rest upon and abide with you all

  2175. now and forevermore

  2176. Amen

  2177. Amen

  2178. Amen

  2179. Thank you.
