  1. Great fear and meeting of the saints is due unto the Lord.

  2. He of all about him should with reverence be adored.

  3. What a wonderful summary that is of the spirit of worship as the Lord's people gather together Sunday by Sunday

  4. or as opportunity presents itself to give glory to the Lord.

  5. And as verse 8 puts it specifically in the chapter we read together earlier in 2 Timothy chapter 2,

    2 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  6. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, has preached in my gospel,

  7. for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal, but the word of God is not bound.

  8. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus

  9. with eternal glory.

  10. You cannot but read this letter and take on board what really drove Paul,

  11. what mattered most of all to him, what he really wanted more than anything else,

  12. what drove him was giving Jesus Christ all the glory and all the praise.

  13. And so here we have in just the second chapter of this wonderful letter that's so personal,

  14. so moving to read this and think of the providence behind it, the circumstances,

  15. here he is bound as a criminal, writing furiously, his right, his written ministry,

  16. still going on even though he himself was suffering, bound with chains,

  17. but he knew the word of God is not bound.

  18. But what drove him, these wonderful words here in verse 8,

  19. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead.

  20. This was his mission.

  21. To understand Paul, we need to bear these words in mind and ourselves.

  22. Remember what drove him, what shaped him, what moulded him,

  23. what motivated him was this exact sense of service and mission and purpose.

  24. Remember Jesus Christ as preached in my gospel.

  25. That, Timothy, is the key to you taking your place in service in his church as one of his people.

  26. If you're going to lead, you yourself must be led.

  27. That's an ethic of grace.

  28. That certainly has its place in whatever role you're fulfilling in the work of the congregation.

  29. To lead others, you yourself and I myself, you need to be led by the Spirit

  30. toward understanding Jesus Christ, his finished work upon the cross.

  31. And to share that with others, we ourselves need to study and delve into the scripture

  32. and understand the gospel and seek the grace of the gospel to make Jesus known.

  33. And that's all gone on in the heart and mind of Paul.

  34. He wanted people to hear the good news and to grow in their newfound knowledge and understanding,

  35. gained through the gospel ministry that he was part of.

  36. Remember Jesus Christ as preached in my gospel.

  37. Gospel.

  38. Still wonder then, with this motivation, this love, this desire,

  39. that we find him calling Timothy to get the perspective right in order to step into leadership,

  40. in order to fulfill his ministry, in order to meet the responsibility and privilege that would be his

  41. as a pastor, as a leader, as a teacher.

  42. He had to first and foremost get the fundamentals right.

  43. The foundation had to be in place.

  44. And here it is, friends, remember Jesus Christ.

  45. So I want to think about that for a few moments with you this evening,

  46. and in the hope that we would benefit, as Timothy would have in reading these words for the first time,

  47. that we would be encouraged, that we would be motivated to express real loyalty

  48. and sharpen our perspective and deepen our hope that the light would burn brightly

  49. as we go into a new week.

  50. And who knows, Christian friend, the opportunities to witness to your Lord and Saviour

  51. that await this week.

  52. None of us know that.

  53. We'll get to that in a moment.

  54. The first thing then to notice tonight,

  55. I'll put it to you this way,

  56. you are to cherish your Lord and Saviour.

  57. Cherish your Lord and Saviour.

  58. If we don't remember our Lord,

  59. then our spiritual growth cannot occur.

  60. This word, we might just glance over it,

  61. but this wonderful call,

  62. the call here to remember Jesus Christ

  63. is an absolutely crucial principle

  64. in spiritual growth and Christian living.

  65. Because forgetfulness

  66. is an enemy of faithfulness.

  67. If we forget,

  68. we're going to stumble,

  69. we're going to mumble,

  70. we're not going to be certain,

  71. we're going to be hitting the grey areas

  72. instead of being black and white,

  73. showing forth the praises of him

  74. who called us from darkness

  75. into his marvellous light.

  76. For that light to shine brightly,

  77. we need to remember.

  78. This is a starting point.

  79. I'm sure many of you know

  80. that John Newton is famously on record

  81. as saying toward the end of his own life,

  82. my memory is nearly gone.

  83. But I remember two things,

  84. that I am a great sinner

  85. and that Christ is a great Saviour.

  86. That Christian friend is a message

  87. that is the pulse of the New Testament.

  88. It is where our hope is sourced from.

  89. Jesus Christ,

  90. our Lord and Saviour and friend,

  91. he's done everything for us.

  92. We have it beautifully described

  93. so movingly by John in chapter 19 of Christ.

  94. He bearing his own cross

  95. as he leaves the city behind,

  96. making his way to Calvary's hill.

  97. There's our Saviour.

  98. And why did he go there?

  99. So that tonight you and I would have hope.

  100. So that you and I, friends,

  101. could speak of forgiveness,

  102. redemption, adoption,

  103. and salvation,

  104. wonderful, glorious words of grace.

  105. These are words that are just chocked full

  106. in the New Testament

  107. to help us understand who he is

  108. and what it all means for you

  109. and for me this evening.

  110. And this is where it all starts.

  111. Remember Jesus Christ,

  112. risen from the dead,

  113. the offspring of David,

  114. as preached in my gospel.

  115. So if we're going to remember,

  116. that's going to protect us

  117. as we cherish our Saviour.

  118. We're going to refuse to forget.

  119. We're going to remember the blessings.

  120. We're going to remember what we've learned

  121. in our pilgrimage, Christian friend.

  122. We're going to store up these nuggets,

  123. these beautiful moments in time

  124. and fellowship under the word,

  125. together, perhaps at the Lord's table

  126. in this very building.

  127. Time and time again,

  128. the Lord has fed you

  129. and nourished you

  130. and blessed you

  131. and filled you

  132. and built you up.

  133. And you are to remember these things

  134. and draw on these things

  135. as you go into the world

  136. and that world out there

  137. that's waiting for us

  138. is a dark world.

  139. It's a world of indifference

  140. and apathy.

  141. It's a world where the devil reigns

  142. as a prince.

  143. It's where his influence is felt

  144. in the secularism

  145. that seems to be gripping

  146. our own nation

  147. and driving this progressiveness

  148. toward liberalism

  149. and atheism,

  150. secularism at the back of everything.

  151. And who's driving it?

  152. Who's fanning that flame?

  153. The devil.

  154. Because he wants the church of Christ

  155. silenced,

  156. all the more important

  157. that we cherish our Lord and Saviour

  158. and remember Jesus Christ

  159. risen from the dead.

  160. Paul writes from a prison cell.

  161. He is writing where things

  162. have not gone

  163. according to his own plans.

  164. He didn't wish to be chained,

  165. suffering, bound as a criminal.

  166. But nevertheless,

  167. this is where providence finds him.

  168. We need to, friends,

  169. as we remember,

  170. hope for the best

  171. but plan for the worst.

  172. There will be times

  173. where providence

  174. overtakes us

  175. in a manner

  176. that we wouldn't wish on anybody

  177. and things will suddenly change

  178. and we may be disorientated

  179. and buffeted

  180. and uncertain

  181. of where to turn

  182. and so all the more important,

  183. we remember Jesus Christ.

  184. we remember who he is

  185. and look where Paul was writing from.

  186. As far as we can piece things together,

  187. a New Testament scholars

  188. have been so detailed

  189. in the study of these things.

  190. It seems that the two stages

  191. of the Roman judicial system,

  192. Paul has been through the first,

  193. he's been found guilty.

  194. It's now just a matter of the second

  195. where the pronunciation,

  196. the sentence will be carried out.

  197. He doesn't know how long he's got.

  198. Time is ticking

  199. and for him,

  200. he knows that there isn't much left to go.

  201. He knows that he has been poured out

  202. as a drink offering.

  203. He knows that the time

  204. for his departure has come.

  205. Time is short.

  206. There's not much left.

  207. And so we find him in this letter

  208. particularly emphasising

  209. what needs to be emphasised.

  210. Remember Jesus Christ.

  211. Christ,

  212. cherish your Lord and Saviour.

  213. Christian friend,

  214. there's a reminder here for all of us

  215. that if we cherish our Lord,

  216. it will protect us from apathy.

  217. Where does apathy come from?

  218. Apathy comes from disillusionment,

  219. disappointment,

  220. despair.

  221. All these things can combine and collide

  222. and take the hope right out of your heart

  223. and leave you uncertain of things.

  224. But not if you're fixed on Christ.

  225. Not if you remember who he is

  226. and what he has done for you.

  227. Not if you as a Christian

  228. can speak to him tonight

  229. as your Lord

  230. and your Saviour.

  231. And so cherishing the Lord

  232. is something that begins in here.

  233. It's a heart work.

  234. It's personal.

  235. But there's another element to this

  236. and that comes out in these words

  237. in verse 9.

  238. I am suffering

  239. for which I am suffering.

  240. So he makes a link there.

  241. Remember Jesus Christ

  242. risen from the dead,

  243. the offspring of David

  244. as preached in my gospel.

  245. So has everything gone smoothly

  246. because of that?

  247. Absolutely not.

  248. For which I am suffering,

  249. bound with chains,

  250. as a criminal.

  251. But the word of God is not bound.

  252. So here we're seeing Paul

  253. and his awareness,

  254. not just of the need

  255. to have our heart warmed

  256. with a love

  257. that is completely focused on Jesus.

  258. He wants us to be protected

  259. from the apathy and disappointment

  260. that comes from disappointment

  261. and setbacks.

  262. But he also is very conscious

  263. of the watching world.

  264. What did the world make of Paul

  265. at this time?

  266. As far as the Roman security detail

  267. were concerned,

  268. this was just a troublemaking Jew.

  269. He was finished,

  270. hopeless,

  271. beaten,

  272. a religious troublemaker,

  273. a zealot,

  274. a fool.

  275. He was weak,

  276. he was puny,

  277. and above all,

  278. he's in chains,

  279. in a cell,

  280. he's alone.

  281. That was the world's view of Paul.

  282. But it was not God's view.

  283. God's view of Paul,

  284. that's his view of every child

  285. that belongs to him.

  286. Precious,

  287. forgiven,

  288. adopted.

  289. A child,

  290. not forgotten,

  291. not alone,

  292. but loved

  293. and redeemed

  294. and part of his plan

  295. to make the gospel known.

  296. So Paul accepts this.

  297. Remember Jesus Christ.

  298. Remember the gospel

  299. for which I am suffering,

  300. bound with change as a criminal,

  301. but the word of God

  302. is not bound.

  303. And so friends,

  304. tonight,

  305. the call from this

  306. great personal epistle

  307. is to cherish

  308. your Lord

  309. and your Saviour.

  310. You'll notice the language

  311. in verse 10

  312. in these few verses

  313. we've read together

  314. and we're going to get to this

  315. in a moment,

  316. but just to jump ahead

  317. into verse 10,

  318. there's another link.

  319. Therefore,

  320. because of all this,

  321. I endure everything

  322. for the sake of the elect.

  323. Why, Paul?

  324. That they also may obtain

  325. the salvation

  326. that is in Christ Jesus

  327. with eternal glory.

  328. He cherished his Lord

  329. and Saviour.

  330. He loved making him known.

  331. It was his motivation.

  332. And he loved those

  333. who, like him,

  334. had responded

  335. in repentance

  336. and faith.

  337. And this is the supreme

  338. question of the Bible

  339. now before us

  340. here in verse 10.

  341. He speaks in this phrase

  342. of the elect,

  343. those chosen by God,

  344. that they

  345. may also

  346. obtain

  347. the salvation

  348. that is in Christ Jesus.

  349. What is that?

  350. It is to be saved

  351. from the wrath

  352. to come.

  353. It is to be saved

  354. from being under the law,

  355. banished

  356. and helpless,

  357. facing a lost eternity

  358. and to be transferred

  359. into the kingdom

  360. of his dear son.

  361. That is salvation.

  362. And so the question

  363. in all of this,

  364. friends,

  365. tonight is,

  366. do you know

  367. and do you cherish

  368. Jesus Christ

  369. as Lord and Saviour?

  370. That is

  371. the supreme question

  372. of the Bible.

  373. Are you saved?

  374. Do you know

  375. the Lord

  376. as your Saviour?

  377. Do you know

  378. what it is

  379. to speak of

  380. salvation

  381. in Christ Jesus?

  382. I pray so.

  383. And the question

  384. is this,

  385. of course,

  386. as we speak

  387. about cherishing

  388. the Lord,

  389. if tonight

  390. you're unconvinced

  391. and unconverted,

  392. I wonder

  393. if you would ask

  394. yourself in the

  395. quiet and privacy

  396. of your own heart

  397. now or this evening,

  398. why?

  399. Why are you

  400. unconvinced?

  401. why are you

  402. unconverted?

  403. What is it

  404. about the cross

  405. and the saving

  406. work of Christ

  407. that leaves you

  408. still far off?

  409. Are you waiting

  410. for something else?

  411. Are you waiting

  412. for something more?

  413. Are you waiting

  414. for someone

  415. to say something

  416. to you

  417. that hasn't

  418. been said before?

  419. Bearing

  420. his own cross,

  421. he went out

  422. and he gave himself

  423. a ransom for many.

  424. I would urge you

  425. tonight,

  426. friends,

  427. to be very,

  428. very careful

  429. from saying

  430. to the living God,

  431. I want a sign.

  432. I want something else.

  433. I want something more

  434. because if you're

  435. saying that to God

  436. tonight,

  437. what you're saying

  438. is the cross

  439. is not enough.

  440. The death

  441. of your precious

  442. beloved son

  443. is not enough.

  444. His atoning sacrifice,

  445. that's not enough.

  446. I need something more.

  447. I want something else.

  448. I need to be gripped.

  449. I need to be impressed.

  450. I need to be entertained.

  451. I need something

  452. that I haven't had yet

  453. and I want you

  454. to give it to me.

  455. That is to say

  456. to God,

  457. the cross

  458. is not enough.

  459. Be very,

  460. very careful,

  461. friends,

  462. that you

  463. do not stay long

  464. on that dangerous

  465. ground,

  466. but come to Christ.

  467. Trust in him

  468. with all your heart.

  469. Cherish

  470. your Lord

  471. and your Saviour.

  472. There's something else here

  473. to turn to secondly

  474. and we find it

  475. in these words.

  476. We've read through

  477. verse 10 already.

  478. Paul,

  479. in this wonderful perspective,

  480. he himself was chained

  481. to all intents

  482. and purposes.

  483. He was restricted.

  484. He was of no use

  485. to anybody,

  486. but look at this.

  487. 2,000 years later,

  488. we have all his epistles

  489. that form

  490. the canon of Scripture

  491. that feed our souls,

  492. that give us insight

  493. and understand

  494. the glorious gospel

  495. of grace.

  496. The world had no idea

  497. who they were dealing with.

  498. They were dealing

  499. with Jesus,

  500. the King of Kings

  501. and here his apostle,

  502. his servant,

  503. was writing furiously,

  504. maybe by lamplight,

  505. who knows,

  506. scratching furiously away

  507. on these parchments

  508. led by the Spirit

  509. as the word

  510. was breathed out.

  511. He was born along

  512. and he wrote

  513. these beautiful,

  514. precious words

  515. and sends them off

  516. to Timothy

  517. and he draws

  518. this incredible letter

  519. to a close

  520. in verse 4.

  521. I charge you

  522. in the presence

  523. of God

  524. and of Christ Jesus

  525. who was to judge

  526. the living and the dead.

  527. Preach the word,

  528. Timothy.

  529. Keep the focus,

  530. Timothy.

  531. Take heart,

  532. Timothy.

  533. But whatever you do,

  534. preach the word.

  535. Because Paul knew,

  536. secondly,

  537. that that was

  538. to the benefit

  539. of the church of Christ

  540. and this is

  541. the second thing here.

  542. We are to cherish

  543. our Lord

  544. and our Saviour

  545. and we are secondly

  546. to cherish

  547. his church.

  548. Cherish

  549. his church.

  550. I endure

  551. everything

  552. for the sake

  553. of the elect.

  554. This was a man

  555. who wasn't just

  556. driven to some

  557. kind of apostolic

  558. high office.

  559. He wasn't

  560. lording it over

  561. anybody.

  562. He was the least

  563. of all the apostles.

  564. He was a man

  565. who had been

  566. truly humbled.

  567. He was a man

  568. who,

  569. in his own words

  570. in his testimony

  571. in 1 Timothy,

  572. remember he says

  573. it twice

  574. in a very short

  575. space of time,

  576. I received mercy.

  577. He knew he had

  578. been a pompous,

  579. arrogant,

  580. proud sinner

  581. heading for

  582. a lost eternity

  583. until Christ

  584. stopped him

  585. in his tracks

  586. and he received

  587. mercy.

  588. That's the gospel.

  589. And so Paul

  590. is giving himself

  591. to the furtherance

  592. of that cause

  593. and the spreading

  594. of that wonderful

  595. name,

  596. Jesus Christ

  597. and he wants

  598. to serve

  599. the Lord

  600. and by serving

  601. the Lord

  602. he wants to

  603. nourish and

  604. encourage and

  605. look out for

  606. his people.

  607. I endure

  608. everything for

  609. the sake of

  610. the elect

  611. that they

  612. also may

  613. obtain the

  614. salvation that

  615. is in Christ

  616. Jesus with

  617. eternal glory.

  618. He was driven

  619. to encourage,

  620. nurture,

  621. build up the

  622. faith because

  623. he knew they

  624. were living in

  625. a dark and

  626. sinful world.

  627. as we are

  628. tonight,

  629. Christian friend.

  630. I want to

  631. share with you

  632. what Oswald

  633. Chambers said

  634. about this

  635. dynamic.

  636. Oswald

  637. Chambers,

  638. maybe you

  639. know his

  640. very famous

  641. devotional work,

  642. my utmost for

  643. his highest.

  644. Oswald Chambers

  645. at one point

  646. and it's very

  647. effective and

  648. yes,

  649. minister was

  650. so short.

  651. He said,

  652. all heaven

  653. is interested

  654. in the cross.

  655. All hell

  656. is terribly

  657. afraid of the

  658. cross.

  659. While humanity

  660. are the only

  661. beings who

  662. more or less

  663. ignore its

  664. meaning.

  665. We know

  666. how true

  667. that is.

  668. We have

  669. cultural heroes

  670. tonight in the

  671. UK for instance

  672. and I mention

  673. them often because

  674. they seem to be

  675. even more

  676. prominent than

  677. ever,

  678. are comedians.

  679. Comedians are

  680. leading the charge

  681. in the secular

  682. world,

  683. the progressive

  684. mindset that

  685. uses repeatedly

  686. the gospel and

  687. the things of

  688. Christ and the

  689. things of

  690. Christianity

  691. as a

  692. battering ram,

  693. as something

  694. to mock and

  695. something for

  696. cheap laughs.

  697. Be careful

  698. with them.

  699. Don't let them

  700. get under your

  701. skin or in

  702. your mind.

  703. A lot of

  704. them are bad

  705. people and we

  706. need to be

  707. careful of their

  708. influence on

  709. ourselves and

  710. our youngsters

  711. because they're

  712. cultural heroes,

  713. these comedians,

  714. and they will

  715. mock and

  716. abuse and

  717. deride the

  718. cross of

  719. Christ just

  720. as Oswald

  721. Chambers saw

  722. over a hundred

  723. years ago.

  724. Humanity are the

  725. only beings

  726. who more or

  727. less ignore

  728. its meaning.

  729. And we as

  730. Christians,

  731. the church,

  732. can feel that.

  733. We feel the

  734. heat of the

  735. mockery,

  736. the disdain,

  737. the way that

  738. the world can

  739. shun us at

  740. times and

  741. leave us,

  742. don't want us

  743. involved,

  744. don't want the

  745. voice,

  746. don't want the

  747. influence,

  748. don't want the

  749. space,

  750. don't want a

  751. seat at the

  752. table because

  753. we're going to

  754. bring them to

  755. Christ,

  756. we're going to

  757. live for

  758. Christ,

  759. we're drawn

  760. not by an

  761. ethic that

  762. has as its

  763. head cultural

  764. progressiveness.

  765. The Christian

  766. church is

  767. counter-cultural,

  768. we're not going

  769. to be shaped by

  770. the culture

  771. around us,

  772. we're going to

  773. engage with the

  774. culture,

  775. we're going to

  776. enjoy as much

  777. as we can of

  778. it,

  779. of course we

  780. are,

  781. but the

  782. ethic that

  783. drives us

  784. is an

  785. ethic of

  786. grace,

  787. for to me

  788. to live is

  789. Christ,

  790. to die is

  791. gain,

  792. we honour

  793. him above

  794. all,

  795. we put him

  796. first,

  797. his name,

  798. and our

  799. loyalty must be

  800. seen in these

  801. words,

  802. remember Jesus

  803. Christ,

  804. so let us

  805. do so friends

  806. together as we

  807. cherish our

  808. Lord and

  809. Saviour,

  810. secondly let us

  811. cherish his

  812. church,

  813. I endure

  814. everything for

  815. the sake of

  816. the elect,

  817. Paul is

  818. very keen

  819. on using the

  820. word saints

  821. in his

  822. writings of

  823. the church,

  824. people,

  825. brothers and

  826. sisters,

  827. set apart,

  828. Adelphoi,

  829. often used,

  830. often translated

  831. in the ESV as

  832. brethren,

  833. but it could

  834. and should be

  835. translated,

  836. brothers and

  837. sisters,

  838. his sense

  839. of family

  840. was never

  841. far from

  842. the surface,

  843. as he wrote

  844. to Christians

  845. around the

  846. then known

  847. world,

  848. he knew they

  849. were under

  850. the cost,

  851. he knew they

  852. were suffering,

  853. he knew they

  854. were open

  855. to attack

  856. from the

  857. enemy and

  858. agnosticism

  859. and secularism

  860. and atheism

  861. and pluralism,

  862. he knew all

  863. these things

  864. were coming

  865. against the

  866. church,

  867. not only

  868. from out

  869. with,

  870. but then

  871. the problem

  872. from within,

  873. false teachers

  874. saying you

  875. need circumcision,

  876. you need the

  877. Aaronic priesthood,

  878. you need to

  879. maintain the

  880. bond we have

  881. with our

  882. father Abraham

  883. and all the

  884. Abrahamic

  885. practices

  886. and the

  887. tension

  888. from out

  889. with and

  890. the pressure

  891. from within,

  892. the church

  893. was really

  894. under the

  895. cosh,

  896. that's why

  897. it meant

  898. so much

  899. to the

  900. apostle Paul,

  901. that's why

  902. we have

  903. wonderful

  904. passages

  905. such as

  906. 2nd

  907. Corinthians

  908. and chapter

  909. 11,

  910. where we

  911. read from

  912. verse

  913. 23,

  914. these words,

  915. five times

  916. I received

  917. at the

  918. hands of

  919. the

  920. Jews

  921. forty

  922. lashes

  923. less

  924. one,

  925. three times

  926. I was

  927. beaten

  928. with

  929. rods,

  930. once I

  931. was

  932. stoned,

  933. three times

  934. I was

  935. shipwrecked

  936. for a

  937. night and

  938. a day,

  939. I was

  940. adrift at

  941. sea,

  942. on frequent

  943. journeys,

  944. in danger

  945. from rivers,

  946. danger from

  947. robbers,

  948. danger from

  949. my own

  950. people,

  951. danger from

  952. Gentiles,

  953. danger in

  954. the city,

  955. danger in

  956. the wilderness,

  957. danger at

  958. sea,

  959. danger from

  960. false

  961. brothers,

  962. in toil and

  963. hardship,

  964. through many a

  965. sleepless night,

  966. in hunger and

  967. thirst,

  968. often without

  969. food and

  970. cold and

  971. exposure and

  972. apart from

  973. other things,

  974. there is the

  975. daily pressure

  976. on me of

  977. my anxiety

  978. for all the

  979. churches.

  980. Cherish

  981. his church.

  982. And so

  983. we find

  984. tonight that

  985. the words of

  986. scripture place

  987. great dignity

  988. on the

  989. Christian church.

  990. We don't

  991. create it

  992. ourselves,

  993. we receive

  994. it.

  995. Behold,

  996. what manner

  997. of love

  998. the Father

  999. has given

  1000. to us,

  1001. we should

  1002. be called

  1003. children of

  1004. God.

  1005. As with

  1006. Paul,

  1007. so with

  1008. the Apostle

  1009. John.

  1010. They were

  1011. caught up

  1012. with the

  1013. great

  1014. dignity

  1015. that is

  1016. ours

  1017. through

  1018. Christ,

  1019. the dignity

  1020. that belongs

  1021. to the

  1022. church.

  1023. And so

  1024. he knew

  1025. and accepted

  1026. that to

  1027. further the

  1028. gospel,

  1029. he was

  1030. required at

  1031. times to

  1032. suffer for

  1033. the gospel.

  1034. And so

  1035. he accepts

  1036. this readily

  1037. and gladly,

  1038. I endure

  1039. everything for

  1040. the sake of

  1041. the elect,

  1042. that they may

  1043. also obtain

  1044. the salvation

  1045. that is in

  1046. Christ Jesus

  1047. with eternal

  1048. glory.

  1049. If I have

  1050. to suffer

  1051. for their

  1052. well-being

  1053. and their

  1054. nourishment

  1055. and their

  1056. encouragement,

  1057. well,

  1058. so be it.

  1059. Perhaps he

  1060. had understood

  1061. at this point

  1062. as his life

  1063. and ministry

  1064. and service

  1065. was fast

  1066. drawn to a

  1067. close that

  1068. the Lord

  1069. had put him

  1070. in prison

  1071. so he

  1072. would write

  1073. and write

  1074. and keep

  1075. writing.

  1076. and so

  1077. we have

  1078. the prison

  1079. epistles

  1080. and the

  1081. pastoral

  1082. epistles

  1083. and the

  1084. Corinthian

  1085. letters

  1086. that furnish

  1087. us with

  1088. such great

  1089. insight and

  1090. understanding

  1091. of the

  1092. gospel of

  1093. our Lord

  1094. and Saviour

  1095. Jesus

  1096. Christ.

  1097. John

  1098. Stott said

  1099. this,

  1100. glory comes

  1101. through

  1102. suffering.

  1103. This is

  1104. an invariable

  1105. law of

  1106. Christian life

  1107. and service.

  1108. We are not

  1109. entitled,

  1110. Christian friends,

  1111. to an easy

  1112. time.

  1113. That's not

  1114. a promise

  1115. we receive

  1116. in the

  1117. Bible.

  1118. What we

  1119. do receive

  1120. is great

  1121. dignity

  1122. as children

  1123. of the

  1124. living God

  1125. and that

  1126. is a

  1127. wonderful

  1128. humbling

  1129. reality

  1130. tonight.

  1131. So there's

  1132. no sense

  1133. in us

  1134. sitting back

  1135. leaving it

  1136. to God

  1137. or leaving

  1138. it to

  1139. others.

  1140. We have

  1141. to take

  1142. an example

  1143. from these

  1144. early believers,

  1145. this first

  1146. century church

  1147. that reached

  1148. out,

  1149. that turned

  1150. the world

  1151. upside down,

  1152. that lived

  1153. out what

  1154. the Lord

  1155. had worked

  1156. in and

  1157. they made

  1158. Jesus

  1159. known.

  1160. I endure

  1161. that they

  1162. may obtain.

  1163. We too

  1164. must cherish

  1165. the church

  1166. and do

  1167. the work

  1168. we are

  1169. called to

  1170. do in

  1171. our day

  1172. and in

  1173. our age.

  1174. Many

  1175. passages

  1176. in the

  1177. New Testament

  1178. deal with

  1179. the nature

  1180. of the

  1181. church and

  1182. how it is

  1183. that the

  1184. church is

  1185. to conduct

  1186. herself.

  1187. By this

  1188. of course

  1189. I'm speaking

  1190. to you

  1191. and to

  1192. me as

  1193. Christians

  1194. this evening.

  1195. We've

  1196. gathered in

  1197. a place

  1198. of worship

  1199. but we

  1200. know that

  1201. the Bible

  1202. and New

  1203. Testament

  1204. makes it

  1205. clear that

  1206. the church

  1207. is not

  1208. a building

  1209. we are

  1210. living

  1211. stones.

  1212. We belong

  1213. to Christ.

  1214. We are

  1215. called to

  1216. worship

  1217. together

  1218. to nourish

  1219. ourselves

  1220. through the

  1221. word and

  1222. through sacraments

  1223. and prayer.

  1224. This is where

  1225. we learn

  1226. where understanding

  1227. deepens and

  1228. expands

  1229. that it is

  1230. those who are

  1231. poor in

  1232. spirit

  1233. that inherit

  1234. the kingdom

  1235. of heaven.

  1236. And that's

  1237. why Paul

  1238. is so clear

  1239. in other

  1240. writings

  1241. that we

  1242. are to

  1243. conduct

  1244. ourselves

  1245. in a

  1246. manner

  1247. that is

  1248. worthy

  1249. of the

  1250. calling

  1251. with which

  1252. we have

  1253. been

  1254. called.

  1255. Called

  1256. from

  1257. darkness

  1258. to

  1259. light.

  1260. Therefore

  1261. as Jesus

  1262. said

  1263. let your

  1264. light

  1265. shine

  1266. before

  1267. men

  1268. that

  1269. they

  1270. might

  1271. glorify

  1272. your

  1273. father

  1274. who is

  1275. in

  1276. heaven.

  1277. And so

  1278. I mentioned

  1279. earlier

  1280. that we

  1281. are

  1282. driven

  1283. by

  1284. an

  1285. ethic

  1286. of

  1287. grace.

  1288. An

  1289. ethic

  1290. not

  1291. of

  1292. moral

  1293. principles

  1294. of course

  1295. but

  1296. principles

  1297. that have

  1298. at their

  1299. heart

  1300. the grace

  1301. of the

  1302. gospel.

  1303. So we

  1304. put

  1305. Jesus

  1306. first.

  1307. We

  1308. die

  1309. to

  1310. self

  1311. to

  1312. live

  1313. for

  1314. him.

  1315. And

  1316. this

  1317. is

  1318. very

  1319. important

  1320. especially

  1321. in

  1322. your

  1323. situation

  1324. this

  1325. evening

  1326. as a

  1327. vacant

  1328. congregation.

  1329. You've

  1330. been

  1331. now

  1332. 21

  1333. months

  1334. going

  1335. through

  1336. this

  1337. process.

  1338. It's

  1339. been

  1340. a

  1341. privilege

  1342. to be

  1343. part

  1344. of

  1345. it

  1346. with

  1347. you.

  1348. I

  1349. wish

  1350. it

  1351. had

  1352. been

  1353. shorter.

  1354. I

  1355. wish

  1356. it

  1357. had

  1358. been

  1359. clearer.

  1360. At

  1361. times

  1362. I

  1363. know

  1364. things

  1365. could

  1366. have

  1367. been

  1368. so

  1369. much

  1370. better.

  1371. But

  1372. the

  1373. best

  1374. of

  1375. men

  1376. are

  1377. men

  1378. at

  1379. best.

  1380. And

  1381. I

  1382. hope

  1383. you'll

  1384. forgive

  1385. my

  1386. blunderings

  1387. and my

  1388. uncertainties

  1389. as we've

  1390. gone through

  1391. just to

  1392. get to

  1393. this

  1394. point.

  1395. Where

  1396. are we

  1397. in

  1398. this

  1399. process?

  1400. At

  1401. this

  1402. point

  1403. in

  1404. time

  1405. we

  1406. have

  1407. had

  1408. the

  1409. speeches,

  1410. we've

  1411. had

  1412. the

  1413. election,

  1414. we've

  1415. had

  1416. the

  1417. votes,

  1418. the

  1419. votes

  1420. are

  1421. in,

  1422. the

  1423. counts

  1424. have

  1425. been

  1426. done.

  1427. And

  1428. now for

  1429. you on

  1430. Wednesday

  1431. the next

  1432. phase is

  1433. just around

  1434. the corner.

  1435. Now I

  1436. need to

  1437. speak

  1438. tonight

  1439. specifically

  1440. and

  1441. particularly

  1442. to the

  1443. members

  1444. of this

  1445. congregation.

  1446. Let me

  1447. say this

  1448. to you

  1449. gently

  1450. and with

  1451. all

  1452. respect,

  1453. you need

  1454. to be

  1455. here on

  1456. Wednesday.

  1457. If you're

  1458. not here

  1459. on Wednesday

  1460. there are

  1461. mandates

  1462. available for

  1463. you to

  1464. take part

  1465. in this

  1466. process.

  1467. That

  1468. allows

  1469. you to

  1470. put your

  1471. name to

  1472. the call

  1473. we hope

  1474. to sign

  1475. here on

  1476. Wednesday

  1477. evening.

  1478. It's

  1479. not me

  1480. now that's

  1481. telling you

  1482. what to

  1483. do.

  1484. I'm

  1485. pointing you

  1486. to the

  1487. ethic of

  1488. grace.

  1489. I mentioned

  1490. the election

  1491. that's

  1492. happened.

  1493. All that

  1494. we have

  1495. to go

  1496. on as

  1497. a branch

  1498. of the

  1499. church

  1500. of Christ

  1501. when it

  1502. comes to

  1503. vacancies

  1504. is numbers.

  1505. We've

  1506. had the

  1507. vote and

  1508. the numbers

  1509. have been

  1510. cast.

  1511. The

  1512. clear

  1513. majority

  1514. said we

  1515. wish to

  1516. call

  1517. Calamurdo.

  1518. So what

  1519. do we

  1520. do now?

  1521. How do

  1522. we run

  1523. with this?

  1524. How do

  1525. we deal

  1526. with this?

  1527. I'm going

  1528. to turn

  1529. now to

  1530. where perhaps

  1531. this ethic

  1532. of grace

  1533. is most

  1534. clearly and

  1535. famously

  1536. spelt out.

  1537. How do

  1538. we conduct

  1539. ourselves

  1540. perhaps at

  1541. a time

  1542. when you're

  1543. challenged

  1544. because things

  1545. maybe didn't

  1546. turn the way

  1547. you'd hoped

  1548. for?

  1549. Well, so

  1550. be it.

  1551. That happens

  1552. often in life,

  1553. doesn't it?

  1554. We don't

  1555. allow our

  1556. own sense

  1557. of things

  1558. to cloud our

  1559. judgment at

  1560. a time like

  1561. this.

  1562. Let me read

  1563. to you

  1564. from

  1565. Philippians

  1566. in chapter

  1567. two,

  1568. how it

  1569. is we

  1570. are to

  1571. conduct

  1572. ourselves

  1573. going forward

  1574. with an eye

  1575. to Wednesday

  1576. in particular

  1577. and this

  1578. is for the

  1579. members.

  1580. If there

  1581. is any

  1582. encouragement

  1583. in Christ,

  1584. any comfort

  1585. from love,

  1586. any participation

  1587. in the spirit,

  1588. any affection

  1589. and sympathy,

  1590. complete my

  1591. joy by being

  1592. of the same

  1593. mind,

  1594. having the

  1595. same love,

  1596. being in

  1597. full accord

  1598. and one

  1599. mind.

  1600. Do nothing

  1601. from rivalry

  1602. or conceit,

  1603. but in

  1604. humility

  1605. count others

  1606. more significant

  1607. than yourself.

  1608. Let each

  1609. of you look

  1610. not only to

  1611. his own

  1612. interests,

  1613. but also

  1614. to the

  1615. interests

  1616. of others.

  1617. of this

  1618. mind among

  1619. yourselves,

  1620. which is

  1621. yours in

  1622. Christ Jesus,

  1623. who though

  1624. he was in

  1625. the form

  1626. of God,

  1627. did not

  1628. count equality

  1629. with God

  1630. a thing

  1631. to be

  1632. grasped,

  1633. but made

  1634. himself

  1635. nothing,

  1636. taking the

  1637. form of

  1638. a servant,

  1639. being born

  1640. in the

  1641. likeness

  1642. of men,

  1643. being found

  1644. in human

  1645. form,

  1646. he humbled

  1647. himself by

  1648. becoming

  1649. obedient to

  1650. the point

  1651. of death,

  1652. even death

  1653. on a cross.

  1654. There is the

  1655. ethic of

  1656. grace.

  1657. Count

  1658. others

  1659. better

  1660. than

  1661. yourselves.

  1662. Members,

  1663. you need to

  1664. be here on

  1665. Wednesday.

  1666. There is a

  1667. clear

  1668. responsibility

  1669. and duty

  1670. for you to

  1671. be here.

  1672. I am not

  1673. telling you

  1674. to be here,

  1675. but what I am

  1676. doing is I am

  1677. taking you to

  1678. the scripture

  1679. and I am

  1680. presenting you

  1681. with a word

  1682. that says

  1683. there is a

  1684. time and a

  1685. place where

  1686. the church,

  1687. where the

  1688. believers and

  1689. members of

  1690. the church,

  1691. the living

  1692. stones,

  1693. have to be

  1694. gathered in

  1695. together and

  1696. conduct

  1697. themselves in

  1698. a manner

  1699. that is

  1700. worthy of

  1701. the calling

  1702. with which we

  1703. have

  1704. been called.

  1705. So there we

  1706. have an

  1707. ethic of

  1708. grace in

  1709. Philippians and

  1710. when we turn

  1711. forward to

  1712. Paul's final

  1713. letter, we

  1714. find him

  1715. enduring.

  1716. He is bound

  1717. with chains

  1718. as a criminal.

  1719. But he knows

  1720. that is not

  1721. the end.

  1722. He knows

  1723. that the

  1724. word of

  1725. God is

  1726. going out,

  1727. is going

  1728. forth,

  1729. is spreading.

  1730. Therefore he

  1731. endures for

  1732. the sake of

  1733. the elect that

  1734. they also may

  1735. obtain the

  1736. salvation that

  1737. is in Christ

  1738. Jesus with

  1739. eternal glory.

  1740. Cherish your

  1741. Lord,

  1742. and your

  1743. saviour,

  1744. and cherishes

  1745. church.

  1746. Sometimes that

  1747. means getting

  1748. in line,

  1749. getting together,

  1750. working together,

  1751. pulling together,

  1752. and taking your

  1753. part in what

  1754. could be the

  1755. next phase,

  1756. the next season

  1757. of ministry here

  1758. among you as a

  1759. congregation.

  1760. What an

  1761. opportunity.

  1762. At a time of

  1763. real challenge,

  1764. many of us,

  1765. if we think

  1766. back,

  1767. will be hard

  1768. pressed to

  1769. find a

  1770. time in

  1771. our

  1772. denomination

  1773. where we've

  1774. had so

  1775. many vacancies

  1776. to deal

  1777. with.

  1778. Everybody's

  1779. double-hatting.

  1780. There are

  1781. intermoderators

  1782. and lay

  1783. preachers

  1784. crisscrossing

  1785. our island

  1786. every Sunday

  1787. and sometimes

  1788. on a

  1789. Wednesday as

  1790. well.

  1791. And it's

  1792. the same

  1793. in the

  1794. north of

  1795. Scotland,

  1796. in Skye

  1797. and Wester

  1798. Ross,

  1799. and in

  1800. Glasgow.

  1801. Vacancies,

  1802. challenge,

  1803. gaps.

  1804. We need

  1805. men.

  1806. And so we

  1807. pray to the

  1808. Lord of the

  1809. harvest to

  1810. raise up and

  1811. send workers

  1812. who will

  1813. reap a

  1814. great harvest

  1815. to his

  1816. glory.

  1817. We need

  1818. men.

  1819. We need

  1820. grace.

  1821. We need

  1822. prayer.

  1823. And there

  1824. in Philippians

  1825. we see the

  1826. stress that

  1827. the apostle

  1828. puts on

  1829. unity and

  1830. being of

  1831. one mind

  1832. together.

  1833. As our

  1834. Lord and

  1835. Saviour

  1836. prayed the

  1837. night he

  1838. was betrayed

  1839. that they

  1840. may be

  1841. one.

  1842. As you

  1843. father are

  1844. in me and

  1845. I in you

  1846. that the

  1847. world may

  1848. know that

  1849. you sent

  1850. me.

  1851. We look

  1852. to his

  1853. grace and

  1854. mercy and

  1855. peace to

  1856. lead and

  1857. guide and

  1858. sustain.

  1859. A day by

  1860. day be it

  1861. Wednesday signing

  1862. a call or

  1863. out there

  1864. speaking to

  1865. an unbeliever

  1866. we might be

  1867. as described

  1868. in this very

  1869. chapter the

  1870. good soldier

  1871. of Christ

  1872. Jesus.

  1873. The honest

  1874. athlete,

  1875. the hard

  1876. working farmer.

  1877. Great three

  1878. amazing pictures

  1879. of what it

  1880. is to be a

  1881. child of God,

  1882. a forgiven

  1883. sinner.

  1884. Telling others

  1885. about the

  1886. Lord that

  1887. you have come

  1888. to know and

  1889. love and

  1890. serve.

  1891. cherish your

  1892. Lord and

  1893. your Saviour

  1894. and cherish

  1895. his church.

  1896. May he bless

  1897. you at this

  1898. time.

  1899. May he go

  1900. before you

  1901. and be among

  1902. you.

  1903. May you know

  1904. a time of

  1905. great blessing

  1906. and grace

  1907. as we gather

  1908. week by week.

  1909. Wednesday,

  1910. yes,

  1911. is just another

  1912. meeting in many

  1913. ways,

  1914. another moment

  1915. in the life

  1916. and experience

  1917. of the

  1918. congregation

  1919. of which

  1920. you are

  1921. part.

  1922. And above

  1923. all may his

  1924. name be glorified.

  1925. And it's

  1926. his name we

  1927. finish with.

  1928. And this

  1929. is the

  1930. question.

  1931. What does

  1932. his name

  1933. mean to

  1934. you tonight?

  1935. What does

  1936. his call

  1937. to have a

  1938. walk that

  1939. is worthy

  1940. of his

  1941. calling?

  1942. What does

  1943. it mean

  1944. to you

  1945. tonight?

  1946. Have you

  1947. sought him

  1948. until you

  1949. found him

  1950. with all

  1951. your heart?

  1952. Have you

  1953. come to

  1954. understand

  1955. that unless

  1956. and until

  1957. you bow

  1958. the knee

  1959. and cry

  1960. out,

  1961. Lord,

  1962. be merciful

  1963. to me,

  1964. a sinner,

  1965. that you

  1966. remain

  1967. out with

  1968. his

  1969. kingdom?

  1970. You

  1971. remain

  1972. under

  1973. the law

  1974. which

  1975. brings

  1976. with it

  1977. the

  1978. curse

  1979. of

  1980. eternal

  1981. judgment?

  1982. But he

  1983. came and

  1984. fulfilled that

  1985. law and

  1986. lived a

  1987. perfect life

  1988. and having

  1989. been raised

  1990. from the

  1991. dead,

  1992. says now

  1993. by the

  1994. grace of

  1995. the gospel,

  1996. come to

  1997. me.

  1998. All you

  1999. who labor

  2000. and are

  2001. heavy laden,

  2002. I will

  2003. give you

  2004. rest.

  2005. What an

  2006. opportunity,

  2007. what an

  2008. invitation,

  2009. and what a

  2010. saviour.

  2011. Let's bow

  2012. in prayer

  2013. together for

  2014. a moment.

  2015. Lord,

  2016. our gracious

  2017. God,

  2018. we pray

  2019. tonight for

  2020. your blessing,

  2021. for your

  2022. guidance,

  2023. for your

  2024. hand to be

  2025. upon us.

  2026. We pray,

  2027. Lord God,

  2028. that we

  2029. might understand

  2030. what you

  2031. would have

  2032. us do

  2033. day by

  2034. day.

  2035. We pray

  2036. especially,

  2037. Lord,

  2038. at this

  2039. time that

  2040. you would

  2041. bless and

  2042. guide your

  2043. people here

  2044. as a

  2045. congregation.

  2046. in the

  2047. time they

  2048. have been

  2049. through,

  2050. Lord,

  2051. these almost

  2052. two years

  2053. of coming

  2054. to terms

  2055. with a

  2056. vacancy

  2057. and the

  2058. challenges

  2059. that that

  2060. presents

  2061. and the

  2062. ongoing

  2063. gospel work

  2064. and ministry

  2065. to the

  2066. town here

  2067. around them.

  2068. Lord,

  2069. we pray

  2070. that you

  2071. would be

  2072. with them,

  2073. that you

  2074. would nourish

  2075. them,

  2076. that you

  2077. would sustain

  2078. them and

  2079. encourage

  2080. them.

  2081. Feed their

  2082. souls,

  2083. Lord.

  2084. Grant

  2085. them your

  2086. grace to

  2087. be bright,

  2088. shining

  2089. witnesses

  2090. where you

  2091. have raised

  2092. them up and

  2093. placed them

  2094. together.

  2095. May they

  2096. be a

  2097. beacon of

  2098. hope to

  2099. so many

  2100. around us.

  2101. Lord,

  2102. we ask all

  2103. these things

  2104. with the

  2105. forgiveness of

  2106. our sin.

  2107. For Jesus

  2108. sake,

  2109. Amen.

  2110. Amen.

  2111. Well,

  2112. we're going to

  2113. close our

  2114. service tonight

  2115. by singing

  2116. finally from
