  1. Can we again open our Bibles if you have one? Revelation chapter 5. Let's read verse 5 and verse 6.

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. I don't know how familiar you are with the book of Revelation, but there's probably two main myths about the book of Revelation.

  4. One is it's about the future. Many people who speculate about these things say that the book of Revelation talks about things that will happen in the future.

  5. And they read all sorts of amazing things into the book.

  6. And especially in these days of power politics in the Middle East, there are many folks who say, well, it's obvious, it's all there in the book of Revelation.

  7. Well, the book of Revelation, frankly, may allude to the future, but it is very much a book which talks about today.

  8. So that's mythology number one, that it's a book entirely about the future.

  9. Mythology number two is that it's a difficult book.

  10. Now, there's a certain degree of truth in that.

  11. The book of Revelation is perhaps not the easiest book in the Bible, but it's not as difficult as we think.

  12. Remember, the Bible is a people's book.

  13. The Bible is written for every single one of us.

  14. It's not for experts to stand up in a podium and to explain it and unpack it to people as if there was some priestly caste who is understanding,

  15. and the ordinary people can't really get it.

  16. The Bible is a book for every single person.

  17. And there, of course, there's symbolism in the Bible.

  18. We'll see symbolism in the verses we're going to read.

  19. But at the end of the day, it's not as difficult as it appears.

  20. And so if you were to have an image here about Revelation chapter 5, indeed the whole of Revelation,

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  21. you would ask the question, what is behind the locked door?

  22. Or what is behind the curtain?

  23. Because the word Revelation means an unveiling.

  24. So what we have is you imagine something and it's mysterious.

  25. And someone says, look, you go into that room, but don't look behind the curtain,

  26. because there are mysteries behind the curtain.

  27. And so look at the Revelation as the unveiling, the opening of the curtain to see what is behind it.

  28. Now remember also that whenever we read the Bible, and again we see this tonight when we look at Esther,

  29. there is really one story in the Bible, and that's the story of Jesus.

  30. And the story of how Jesus came to save, and that runs from Genesis right on to Revelation.

  31. How he came on a great rescue mission.

  32. And so the hero of the Bible, the hero of the day, the hero of the hour is always the Lord Jesus.

  33. And of course he is featured very much in this chapter.

  34. He is seen there in two figures.

  35. He is seen there as a lion.

  36. We see that, of course, in verse 5.

  37. And he's seen also as the lamb.

  38. There was a 13th century Italian philosopher known as Bonaventure.

  39. And someone, a student, said to Bonaventure,

  40. why don't people love God more?

  41. And his reply was, they don't love him because they don't know him.

  42. It's interesting, isn't it?

  43. They don't love him because they don't know him.

  44. That's true very much here in the Western Isles.

  45. The church-going population of the Western Isles is, I think, the highest in the United Kingdom

  46. at something like 10%, but 90% of folk don't appear to know him or don't appear to even care.

  47. And I think a lot of the problem is that folk just don't know him.

  48. They don't know about him.

  49. They don't know what he is like.

  50. And sometimes we've not really helped.

  51. And so what I want to do here is look at this passage.

  52. And the key word in the passage is, if you wanted one key word in the passage,

  53. it is the word worthy.

  54. Dominates it.

  55. You see it there in verse 2.

  56. You see it in verse 9.

  57. You see it in verse 12.

  58. It's the theme of the song of the angels in verse 9.

  59. And worthy are you to take the scroll and open its seals.

  60. Worthy.

  61. And again, we'll unpack that in a wee while, God willing.

  62. But this morning, as we look at the passage, I just want us to notice, strangely enough, three things.

  63. The first thing we notice there is the scroll.

  64. And that kind of dominates the chapter, isn't it?

  65. The scroll.

  66. What do we notice about the scroll?

  67. Well, verse 1 and verse 3, we notice that the scroll is sealed.

  68. And so you're always wondering, what's inside a sealed scroll?

  69. Well, we've got to ask ourselves, what exactly is this scroll?

  70. Verse 1 says it's got writing on it.

  71. There's writing on it on both sides.

  72. The idea there is it's packed with information.

  73. It's packed with writing.

  74. And there's lots of ideas, lots of theories about what actually is written on the scroll.

  75. Some folks say it's prophecies are written on the scroll.

  76. There's another interesting view.

  77. It's the last will and testimony.

  78. Some folks say it's the last will and testimony of Jesus.

  79. That's what's written on the scroll.

  80. And so the picture is it's like the reading of a will.

  81. What has Jesus left for the church?

  82. And it's in the scroll.

  83. And people are really keen to open the scroll.

  84. So it could be prophecies.

  85. One view is it's the last will and testimony of Jesus.

  86. And another view, and I think this is probably the most accurate, is everything's in the scroll.

  87. The history of the world is in the scroll.

  88. The future is in the scroll.

  89. The purposes and plan of God are in the scroll.

  90. Wouldn't you like to know the purposes and plan of God?

  91. Well, sometimes it's a blessing not to know the purposes and plan of God.

  92. Have that picture in your mind that that's what the scroll is.

  93. It is the purposes and plan of God for everything.

  94. It's not the first time we see the scroll.

  95. You see the scroll in Exodus chapter 2.

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  96. The same book.

  97. Sorry, Ezekiel.

  98. Ezekiel chapter 2 verse 10.

    Ezekiel 2:10

  99. Exact same book.

  100. It says,

  101. And both sides of it were written words of lament and mourning and woe.

  102. It's seen in Psalm 139.

  103. Within the volume of the book, it written as of me.

  104. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to pass.

  105. And of course, in an ancient tradition, a book was often sealed after the contents were witnessed by seven people.

  106. And so it's the future of humanity here.

  107. And it is jaw-dropping.

  108. Because when the book is opened, chapter 8 verse 1,

  109. it says that there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

  110. But there's a problem, isn't there?

  111. You've got this book.

  112. You've got this scroll.

  113. And it's got everything in it.

  114. It's like a safe.

  115. But nobody knows the combination.

  116. And you see here, there, the problem with scroll.

  117. In verse 2, I ask the question,

  118. Who is worthy to open the scroll and to break its seals?

  119. You've got the picture there, haven't you?

  120. The scroll.

  121. I see two concepts there, don't you?

  122. The first concept I see is the concept of frustration.

  123. Who is able to open the scroll?

  124. It's like you know something is there.

  125. Now, in the idiom of the day, there's something bigger going on here.

  126. Because not only did the person who opened the scroll see its contents,

  127. but actually, in the context here,

  128. the person who opened the scroll didn't just read it,

  129. but they enacted it.

  130. They made it happen.

  131. So, this stuff in the scroll wasn't going to happen.

  132. Good things, bad things, all these things,

  133. the future of humanity,

  134. the history of the world,

  135. everything wasn't able to get going

  136. unless someone opened the scroll.

  137. The promise of the new heavens and the new earth.

  138. Although the book of Revelation is not all about the future,

  139. where it is somewhat about the future.

  140. That this world is not all there is to be.

  141. That there is a new creation.

  142. That there is a new day coming.

  143. That there is an end to all the tears.

  144. That there is an end to all the pain.

  145. That there is an end to all the frustration.

  146. That this valley of tears is not determinist.

  147. But that there will be a glorious new creation.

  148. But there is nobody able to enact it.

  149. Because nobody can open the scrolls.

  150. And the book was in the hand of a man on a throne.

  151. And he is encircled by a rainbow.

  152. Isn't he?

  153. And the rainbow there,

  154. don't you just love rainbows?

  155. I don't know about you,

  156. but my heart sings

  157. when I see a rainbow.

  158. Because it speaks to me about promise.

  159. It speaks to me about God and the throne.

  160. It speaks to me about a God who said,

  161. I am with you.

  162. I will never leave you.

  163. I'm the promise keeper.

  164. And from the throne,

  165. yes, it's surrounded by a rainbow

  166. and there's flashes of thunder.

  167. That's what God is.

  168. God is a God of awe,

  169. of majesty,

  170. of wonder.

  171. But there's a frustration here,

  172. isn't there?

  173. That's the first concept,

  174. it's frustration.

  175. The second concept is

  176. what I've called worthiness.

  177. They weren't looking for a powerful person.

  178. Don't we today have world leaders

  179. who talk about power?

  180. They boast about power.

  181. My aircraft carrier is bigger than yours.

  182. My army is bigger than your army.

  183. I am the emperor.

  184. What I say goes.

  185. Power.

  186. And it's seen there in the world stage.

  187. It's seen also in your office.

  188. It's seen also in your home.

  189. Power.

  190. And everybody is looking for power.

  191. But it's not a powerful person

  192. who opens a scroll.

  193. This is how world politics,

  194. this is how domestic politics

  195. gets it all wrong.

  196. Power is useless

  197. in the kingdom of God.

  198. Power is also useless

  199. in the way the universe works.

  200. We're not looking for a man or woman of power.

  201. Revelation chapter 5

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  202. is looking for someone of worthiness.

  203. Who is worthy?

  204. Not a person who's powerful,

  205. but a person who is good.

  206. Godly.

  207. Humble.

  208. Not a person who sees himself as Jesus

  209. or even a universal doctor.

  210. But someone who sees himself as nothing.

  211. the power of goodness.

  212. So the question goes out again.

  213. Who is worthy?

  214. You look in the world situation

  215. through history and through time,

  216. who's worthy?

  217. Is there a worthy politician?

  218. You see great humanitarians.

  219. You know,

  220. we've seen them in the past.

  221. Nelson Mandela,

  222. Mother Teresa,

  223. great humanitarians,

  224. wonderful people.

  225. The world leaders.

  226. Who's good?

  227. Is there one good figure

  228. for maybe the

  229. five of you

  230. who like Lord of the Rings?

  231. Who is able

  232. to destroy the ring?

  233. That that ring,

  234. that malevolent thing

  235. that brings misery

  236. into the world

  237. is not a symbol of sin.

  238. It's not a symbol of transgression.

  239. That misery thing

  240. that brings

  241. rottenness

  242. into the core

  243. of everything in the world.

  244. Who is able

  245. to destroy the ring?

  246. Nobody.

  247. Verse 3,

  248. he's in despair.

  249. No one in heaven

  250. or in earth

  251. or under the earth

  252. was able

  253. to open the scroll

  254. or to look into it.

  255. Verse 4,

  256. and I began

  257. to weep loudly.

  258. That brings out

  259. the original,

  260. snorting,

  261. wailing like an animal

  262. and inconsolable grief.

  263. And if you have

  264. a sensitive

  265. conscience,

  266. that's how you'll feel

  267. just now

  268. whenever you watch

  269. the news.

  270. There are folk

  271. near to me

  272. who just can't

  273. watch the news anymore.

  274. It literally

  275. triggers

  276. an emotion

  277. of grief.

  278. Where can we go?

  279. We're just lost.

  280. We need

  281. a Messiah.

  282. Don't we?

  283. These islands

  284. need a Messiah.

  285. Our nation

  286. needs a Messiah.

  287. There are elections

  288. coming up

  289. and folk are saying,

  290. yeah,

  291. we are the people

  292. who will sort this

  293. and sort that

  294. and sort the others.

  295. Can't even get off

  296. a ferry

  297. in five minutes.

  298. The world's

  299. in a mess.

  300. We need

  301. a Messiah.

  302. And so what

  303. do we see

  304. in the passage?

  305. We see a scroll,

  306. don't we?

  307. And we're asking

  308. this question,

  309. we need

  310. a Messiah.

  311. Messiah.

  312. Enter

  313. the Lamb.

  314. Point one,

  315. the scroll.

  316. Point two,

  317. the Lamb.

  318. There's something

  319. dramatic happens here.

  320. Look at verse five.

  321. I love the language

  322. of verse five.

  323. It's very

  324. military,

  325. isn't it?

  326. Weep no more

  327. and behold

  328. the lion

  329. of the tribe

  330. of Judah.

  331. The root

  332. of David

  333. has conquered

  334. so that he

  335. can open

  336. the scrolls.

  337. And there's

  338. this image

  339. of a lion,

  340. an image

  341. of power,

  342. the king

  343. of the jungle,

  344. invincibility.

  345. You've seen

  346. a lion's jaws,

  347. how it can

  348. just consume

  349. a wildebeest.

  350. A lion

  351. is at the top

  352. of the eating

  353. hierarchy.

  354. Lions eat

  355. people,

  356. so there's

  357. this image

  358. of power.

  359. And Jesus

  360. is that lion,

  361. isn't he?

  362. He is the one

  363. who is of the

  364. tribe of Judah.

  365. He is the one

  366. of the root

  367. of David.

  368. People talk

  369. about Jesus,

  370. gentle Jesus,

  371. meek and mild.

  372. Yes,

  373. he is.

  374. But he's also

  375. lying.

  376. He's also

  377. all-consuming.

  378. He's also

  379. powerful.

  380. Folks say

  381. they don't know

  382. about Jesus.

  383. Do they know

  384. about the Jesus

  385. who is not

  386. some sort of

  387. leftover

  388. hippie

  389. from the 60s?

  390. Someone who

  391. just floats

  392. about being

  393. nice to

  394. everyone?

  395. No.

  396. But there's

  397. more to

  398. Jesus than

  399. the lion

  400. is of

  401. Jesus.

  402. The lion

  403. is a

  404. lamb.

  405. Looking for

  406. a lion,

  407. finding a

  408. lamb.

  409. That could

  410. be the

  411. metaphor for

  412. where we

  413. are in

  414. Stornoway

  415. today.

  416. That could

  417. be a

  418. metaphor of

  419. where we

  420. are in

  421. Scotland,

  422. in the

  423. United

  424. Kingdom.

  425. We're

  426. looking for

  427. a lion.

  428. But he

  429. sent a

  430. lamb.

  431. What do we

  432. notice about

  433. a lamb?

  434. Well, one or

  435. two things.

  436. We notice

  437. weakness,

  438. don't we?

  439. This reveals

  440. the values

  441. of the

  442. Kingdom.

  443. Strength

  444. is through

  445. weakness.

  446. Strength

  447. is through

  448. weakness.

  449. If you

  450. watch the

  451. major world

  452. powers,

  453. it's almost

  454. a comedy

  455. show,

  456. isn't it?

  457. Let's

  458. take

  459. Vladimir

  460. Putin.

  461. You ever

  462. seen his

  463. table?

  464. You need

  465. binoculars to

  466. see the

  467. guy at the

  468. other end.

  469. It's the

  470. biggest table

  471. I've ever

  472. seen in

  473. the world.

  474. So you've

  475. got little

  476. Vlad at

  477. one end of

  478. this huge

  479. table.

  480. It's the

  481. optics of

  482. power,

  483. isn't it?

  484. the optics of

  485. power,

  486. the optics of

  487. power,

  488. and then

  489. of course

  490. we have

  491. the

  492. president

  493. with

  494. Air

  495. Force

  496. One.

  497. Invincible

  498. world

  499. power.

  500. I live in

  501. Edinburgh

  502. when the

  503. royals are

  504. in town.

  505. You always

  506. know the

  507. royals are

  508. in town.

  509. There's a

  510. cavalcade,

  511. the cars

  512. are there,

  513. the motorcycle

  514. outriders,

  515. the cars

  516. with the

  517. flashing blue

  518. lights.

  519. It's the

  520. royals,

  521. there's

  522. power,

  523. there is

  524. power here.

  525. But here

  526. is the

  527. power of

  528. the Lamb.

  529. Folk talk

  530. about soft

  531. diplomacy,

  532. don't they?

  533. Soft power.

  534. We are

  535. Christians,

  536. we are

  537. people,

  538. men and

  539. women of

  540. the kingdom.

  541. And this

  542. is where

  543. our power

  544. comes from.

  545. And the

  546. power of

  547. the kingdom

  548. is inverse.

  549. isn't it?

  550. It's the

  551. power of

  552. gentleness,

  553. it's the

  554. power of

  555. opposites,

  556. that the

  557. way up

  558. is the

  559. way down,

  560. that those

  561. who have

  562. less have

  563. more,

  564. that those

  565. who have

  566. nothing have

  567. everything.

  568. It's the

  569. mathematics of

  570. the kingdom.

  571. And the

  572. paradox is

  573. things are

  574. not as

  575. they seem.

  576. Things are

  577. not as

  578. they seem.

  579. Here we

  580. are in

  581. this

  582. building.

  583. It's a

  584. simple

  585. building,

  586. traditional

  587. Presbyterian

  588. church,

  589. plain

  590. building.

  591. And yet

  592. there's more

  593. power in

  594. here this

  595. morning,

  596. isn't there,

  597. than

  598. Downing

  599. Street,

  600. Holyrood,

  601. the Kremlin

  602. and the

  603. White House

  604. combined.

  605. Isn't

  606. there?

  607. power.

  608. But it's

  609. a quiet

  610. power.

  611. And that's

  612. the way

  613. God most

  614. often works.

  615. Again,

  616. we'll see a

  617. little bit of

  618. that tonight

  619. in Esther.

  620. God doesn't

  621. just work

  622. with the

  623. dramatic

  624. signs and

  625. wonders.

  626. He works

  627. powerfully.

  628. Have you

  629. ever heard

  630. the moon

  631. operating in

  632. the tide?

  633. Have you?

  634. No,

  635. it's

  636. silent.

  637. And yet

  638. the seas

  639. rise

  640. and the

  641. seas

  642. fall.

  643. That's

  644. power.

  645. The

  646. lamb is

  647. gentle,

  648. the lamb

  649. is silent,

  650. the lamb

  651. is meek.

  652. We see

  653. weakness,

  654. but also

  655. we see

  656. sacrifice,

  657. verse 6.

  658. This is a

  659. weird lamb.

  660. Verse 6,

  661. I saw a

  662. lamb standing

  663. as though

  664. it had

  665. been slain.

  666. You know,

  667. the metaphors

  668. are bizarre.

  669. Not only

  670. is the

  671. Messiah,

  672. not only

  673. is the

  674. one who

  675. is able

  676. to open

  677. the scrolls

  678. a weak

  679. lamb,

  680. he's a

  681. dead

  682. lamb.

  683. It looks

  684. as if

  685. he's been

  686. slain.

  687. Now,

  688. again,

  689. the gospel

  690. and grammar

  691. as they

  692. say,

  693. I saw

  694. a lamb

  695. standing

  696. as though

  697. it had

  698. been

  699. slain.

  700. There's

  701. an ambiguity

  702. there.

  703. Is it

  704. dead?

  705. Is it

  706. alive?

  707. Well,

  708. it looks

  709. as though

  710. it had

  711. been

  712. slain,

  713. but,

  714. you know,

  715. it's

  716. alive.

  717. who

  718. does that

  719. remind you

  720. of?

  721. That

  722. reminds you

  723. of Jesus

  724. and

  725. resurrection.

  726. He looks

  727. as if

  728. he's been

  729. slain,

  730. but he

  731. is

  732. alive.

  733. And this

  734. is us

  735. right into

  736. the heart

  737. of our

  738. faith.

  739. The

  740. kernel of

  741. the

  742. kernel,

  743. the very

  744. epicenter

  745. of the

  746. Christian

  747. faith.

  748. What is

  749. the

  750. center of

  751. the

  752. gospel?

  753. What is

  754. the center

  755. of the

  756. church?

  757. It's not

  758. all the

  759. stuff.

  760. It's not

  761. all the

  762. accoutrements.

  763. It's not

  764. all the

  765. outward

  766. stuff in

  767. the church.

  768. And that's

  769. what I

  770. would love

  771. to do,

  772. and that's

  773. what I

  774. try and

  775. do from

  776. day to

  777. day.

  778. Get folk

  779. to the

  780. kernel of

  781. the

  782. gospel,

  783. and the

  784. kernel of

  785. the

  786. gospel is

  787. dear

  788. dying

  789. lamb,

  790. thy

  791. precious

  792. blood

  793. shall

  794. never

  795. lose

  796. its

  797. power

  798. till

  799. all

  800. the

  801. ransomed

  802. church

  803. of God

  804. be saved

  805. and sin

  806. no more.

  807. This

  808. is

  809. a

  810. foolish

  811. message.

  812. You say

  813. to it,

  814. what is

  815. the answer

  816. to the

  817. world's

  818. ills?

  819. A

  820. dying

  821. lamb

  822. who was

  823. sacrificed

  824. for our

  825. sin.

  826. Look at

  827. how all

  828. the faith

  829. traditions

  830. view God.

  831. I was

  832. in India

  833. recently,

  834. and it

  835. was dominated

  836. by the

  837. Hindu faith,

  838. and there

  839. are shops

  840. that sell

  841. idols,

  842. and they're

  843. all there,

  844. and they

  845. all look

  846. very

  847. idly.

  848. The

  849. gods

  850. of human

  851. invention

  852. are either

  853. too

  854. bizarre

  855. and remote

  856. and up

  857. there and

  858. unattainable,

  859. or they're

  860. too human.

  861. this is

  862. not an

  863. avatar,

  864. this is

  865. a flesh

  866. and blood

  867. god,

  868. this is

  869. a god.

  870. We've

  871. seen the

  872. scroll,

  873. we've

  874. seen a

  875. lamb.

  876. Thirdly,

  877. what are the

  878. implications?

  879. The question

  880. we may ask

  881. is,

  882. so what?

  883. Who

  884. cares?

  885. here we

  886. are,

  887. a few

  888. folk

  889. gathered

  890. here in

  891. this

  892. building,

  893. Kenneth

  894. Street.

  895. You go

  896. home and

  897. someone says,

  898. oh,

  899. what was he

  900. on about

  901. today?

  902. Well,

  903. he spoke

  904. about a

  905. lamb.

  906. What else

  907. did he

  908. speak about?

  909. Spoke about

  910. gentleness,

  911. spoke about

  912. sacrifice,

  913. a lamb who

  914. died for

  915. our sins.

  916. So what?

  917. I think

  918. this passage

  919. speaks,

  920. and this is

  921. the application

  922. for today,

  923. there's several

  924. levels of

  925. application.

  926. The first,

  927. the passage

  928. to me speaks

  929. in terms of

  930. reversals.

  931. Number one,

  932. there's a

  933. reversal of

  934. power.

  935. Look at

  936. verse six.

  937. Here we

  938. move into

  939. symbolism.

  940. The lamb

  941. looking as if

  942. it had been

  943. slain with

  944. seven horns

  945. and seven

  946. eyes.

  947. Well,

  948. you know,

  949. symbolism 101

  950. tells you that

  951. seven is the

  952. number of

  953. perfection.

  954. Every school

  955. girl knows

  956. that.

  957. Seven is the

  958. word of

  959. perfection.

  960. So when you've

  961. got seven

  962. horns,

  963. horn is a

  964. symbol of

  965. power.

  966. Again,

  967. that's not a

  968. complex image.

  969. The eyes,

  970. wisdom.

  971. Zechariah speaks

  972. of the seven

  973. eyes of the

  974. Lord which

  975. range throughout

  976. the earth.

  977. Stop right

  978. there.

  979. Stop right

  980. there.

  981. The lamb

  982. has seven

  983. horns.

  984. He's all

  985. powerful.

  986. And he's

  987. got seven

  988. eyes.

  989. He sees

  990. everything.

  991. Again,

  992. the present

  993. tense is

  994. used of

  995. the power

  996. and not

  997. the visibility

  998. of the

  999. lamb but

  1000. the vision

  1001. of the

  1002. lamb that

  1003. he can see

  1004. absolutely

  1005. everything.

  1006. think for

  1007. a moment

  1008. of the

  1009. people to

  1010. whom the

  1011. book of

  1012. revelation

  1013. was written.

  1014. It wasn't

  1015. written to a

  1016. group of

  1017. comfortable

  1018. Christians

  1019. in an

  1020. island,

  1021. seated in

  1022. nice padded

  1023. pews in a

  1024. warm building

  1025. like us.

  1026. the book of

  1027. revelation was

  1028. written by

  1029. two people

  1030. who perhaps

  1031. the very next

  1032. day they would

  1033. have been fed

  1034. to the

  1035. lions.

  1036. It was

  1037. written to the

  1038. persecuted

  1039. church.

  1040. It was

  1041. written to

  1042. people who

  1043. feared the

  1044. Roman Empire.

  1045. The Roman Empire

  1046. was tyrannical.

  1047. It was going to

  1048. massacre people.

  1049. That's who it

  1050. was written to.

  1051. Not folk in a

  1052. tidy situation

  1053. like us but

  1054. folk who in

  1055. fear of their

  1056. lives.

  1057. Suffering

  1058. persecution for

  1059. their faith.

  1060. And so much

  1061. of this was

  1062. behind closed

  1063. doors.

  1064. See that again?

  1065. Closed doors,

  1066. veil.

  1067. And they

  1068. wondered,

  1069. did anyone

  1070. ever notice?

  1071. Did you ever

  1072. think that?

  1073. Does anybody

  1074. ever notice?

  1075. I heard in the

  1076. news two days

  1077. ago,

  1078. Nigeria.

  1079. The persecution

  1080. of Christians

  1081. in Nigeria

  1082. is going

  1083. through the

  1084. roof and

  1085. only recently

  1086. has it begun

  1087. to be spoken

  1088. about.

  1089. I read

  1090. this morning,

  1091. that's an

  1092. incredible

  1093. statistic,

  1094. 365 million

  1095. Christians,

  1096. one in

  1097. seven Christians

  1098. in the world,

  1099. one in seven,

  1100. 365 million

  1101. are being

  1102. persecuted for

  1103. their faith.

  1104. who cares?

  1105. Who knows?

  1106. Who knows?

  1107. He sees.

  1108. In verse

  1109. seven,

  1110. he took the

  1111. scroll from

  1112. a hand.

  1113. Didn't he?

  1114. Verse seven

  1115. says that.

  1116. He went and

  1117. took the scroll

  1118. from the right

  1119. hand of him

  1120. who was seated

  1121. on the throne.

  1122. the will of the

  1123. father and

  1124. son are one.

  1125. Do you feel

  1126. you're alone?

  1127. Churches can

  1128. feel

  1129. isolating

  1130. places at

  1131. times,

  1132. don't they?

  1133. you've got

  1134. the inner

  1135. people,

  1136. you've got

  1137. the circle,

  1138. the in

  1139. crowd,

  1140. but you're

  1141. not one of

  1142. the in

  1143. crowd.

  1144. You're just

  1145. sitting there

  1146. in the pew.

  1147. Does

  1148. anybody know

  1149. I'm here?

  1150. Does

  1151. anybody care?

  1152. care?

  1153. He cares.

  1154. There's a

  1155. Zulu

  1156. greeting.

  1157. Not used

  1158. it often

  1159. myself,

  1160. but there's

  1161. a Zulu

  1162. greeting

  1163. and it's

  1164. sawabona.

  1165. Sawabona.

  1166. It means,

  1167. if there are

  1168. any Zulu

  1169. speakers here,

  1170. they'll correct

  1171. my pronunciation,

  1172. it simply

  1173. means,

  1174. I see

  1175. you.

  1176. I see

  1177. you.

  1178. quiet,

  1179. marginal

  1180. person

  1181. suffering

  1182. without anybody

  1183. knowing your

  1184. story.

  1185. The lamb

  1186. in the midst

  1187. of the throne

  1188. sees you.

  1189. So there's

  1190. a reversal

  1191. of status

  1192. here.

  1193. Look at

  1194. what the

  1195. passage says.

  1196. These saints

  1197. have been

  1198. despised for

  1199. many years,

  1200. not many

  1201. noble,

  1202. not many

  1203. wise,

  1204. but he

  1205. sees you.

  1206. verse 8.

  1207. Isn't

  1208. that intriguing?

  1209. They fell

  1210. down before

  1211. the lamb,

  1212. each one

  1213. holding a

  1214. harp and

  1215. a golden

  1216. bow full

  1217. of the

  1218. incense.

  1219. Again,

  1220. we know

  1221. what the

  1222. incense is,

  1223. which are

  1224. the prayers

  1225. of the

  1226. saints.

  1227. the

  1228. prayers of

  1229. the

  1230. saints.

  1231. And the

  1232. prayers are

  1233. answered.

  1234. The

  1235. worthiness is

  1236. the scene.

  1237. And notice

  1238. what the

  1239. worthiness

  1240. is.

  1241. The

  1242. worthiness

  1243. arose from

  1244. his death,

  1245. slain with

  1246. that blood.

  1247. Verse 2,

  1248. there was

  1249. silence in

  1250. heaven.

  1251. Verse 9,

  1252. there's this

  1253. chorus of

  1254. wonder of

  1255. praise.

  1256. There's a

  1257. reversal of

  1258. status.

  1259. But then

  1260. thirdly and

  1261. finally,

  1262. there's a

  1263. reversal of

  1264. exclusivism.

  1265. Look at

  1266. verse 9.

  1267. Whether you

  1268. are to

  1269. take the

  1270. scroll and

  1271. to open

  1272. its seals,

  1273. for you

  1274. were slain

  1275. and by

  1276. your blood

  1277. you ransomed

  1278. people for

  1279. God from

  1280. every tribe

  1281. and language

  1282. and people

  1283. and nation.

  1284. the true

  1285. internationalism

  1286. of the

  1287. church.

  1288. One of my

  1289. big things,

  1290. I pray for

  1291. our own

  1292. denomination,

  1293. is it

  1294. will become

  1295. bigger,

  1296. it will

  1297. become

  1298. poorer,

  1299. and it

  1300. will become

  1301. darker.

  1302. Bigger,

  1303. poorer,

  1304. darker.

  1305. What does

  1306. that mean?

  1307. Bigger means

  1308. that we

  1309. want to

  1310. see our

  1311. churches

  1312. grow and

  1313. expand.

  1314. We want

  1315. to see

  1316. people come

  1317. to faith,

  1318. not just

  1319. splitting

  1320. churches

  1321. and forming

  1322. new churches,

  1323. not just

  1324. doing that

  1325. constantly,

  1326. it gets a

  1327. bit weary,

  1328. but people

  1329. who are

  1330. non-believers

  1331. seeing the

  1332. beauty of

  1333. Jesus,

  1334. seeing the

  1335. beauty of

  1336. Jesus and

  1337. running to

  1338. him and

  1339. filling up

  1340. the churches

  1341. that we

  1342. have,

  1343. planting new

  1344. churches,

  1345. bigger,

  1346. also poorer,

  1347. that we

  1348. have folk

  1349. from every

  1350. socio-economic

  1351. unit,

  1352. that we've

  1353. got folk

  1354. from housing

  1355. schemes,

  1356. that we've

  1357. got folk

  1358. from all

  1359. over as

  1360. well,

  1361. darker for

  1362. ethnic

  1363. diversity.

  1364. And that's

  1365. the promise.

  1366. You ransom

  1367. people from

  1368. every tribe

  1369. and language

  1370. and people

  1371. and nation,

  1372. whoever you

  1373. are in

  1374. this island.

  1375. And one

  1376. of the

  1377. great things

  1378. about the

  1379. highlands

  1380. and islands,

  1381. whether not

  1382. everyone sees

  1383. it as great,

  1384. but I

  1385. certainly see

  1386. it as great,

  1387. is the

  1388. diversity

  1389. of our

  1390. religions,

  1391. people who

  1392. come from

  1393. every single

  1394. area.

  1395. And the

  1396. wonderful thing

  1397. is that

  1398. they're welcome

  1399. in the

  1400. church of

  1401. God.

  1402. Someone once

  1403. said to me,

  1404. what's your

  1405. name?

  1406. I said,

  1407. David Meredith.

  1408. And the

  1409. reply was,

  1410. Meredith,

  1411. what sort

  1412. of a name

  1413. is that?

  1414. I'm sorry

  1415. I wasn't a

  1416. McLeod or

  1417. a Nicholson

  1418. or a

  1419. McKenzie

  1420. or a

  1421. Smith

  1422. or a

  1423. Bacani.

  1424. Every tribe

  1425. and language

  1426. and people

  1427. and nations

  1428. folk with

  1429. the weirdest

  1430. names and

  1431. folk from

  1432. every complexity

  1433. purchased.

  1434. We look for

  1435. the internationalism

  1436. of the church.

  1437. So what do

  1438. we have

  1439. here?

  1440. Let's

  1441. come into

  1442. land.

  1443. We've got

  1444. the world

  1445. in a mess.

  1446. And how

  1447. can I put

  1448. it simply?

  1449. We've got

  1450. a Messiah.

  1451. A Messiah

  1452. who can

  1453. change the

  1454. world and

  1455. change your

  1456. heart and

  1457. change your

  1458. life.

  1459. What do

  1460. we have

  1461. here?

  1462. Some folks

  1463. say it's

  1464. too good

  1465. to be

  1466. true.

  1467. It is

  1468. true.

  1469. Folks,

  1470. it's

  1471. true.

  1472. The

  1473. gospel's

  1474. true.

  1475. Jesus is

  1476. the lamb.

  1477. Jesus is

  1478. the one

  1479. who says

  1480. trust in

  1481. me,

  1482. lean in

  1483. me.

  1484. Jesus is

  1485. the one

  1486. who says

  1487. yes,

  1488. I have

  1489. died,

  1490. but I've

  1491. died for

  1492. you so

  1493. that you

  1494. would not

  1495. die.

  1496. And I'm

  1497. going to

  1498. bring a

  1499. new creation.

  1500. I'm

  1501. going to

  1502. make this

  1503. world

  1504. new.

  1505. There's

  1506. going to

  1507. be a

  1508. freedom

  1509. from all

  1510. sin,

  1511. freedom

  1512. from all

  1513. illness,

  1514. freedom

  1515. from all

  1516. division,

  1517. freedom

  1518. from

  1519. everything.

  1520. The four

  1521. living

  1522. creatures,

  1523. what did

  1524. they do?

  1525. verse 14.

  1526. They said

  1527. Amen.

  1528. And the

  1529. elders fell

  1530. and worshipped

  1531. him.

  1532. We're

  1533. Lewis folk.

  1534. We don't

  1535. say Amen

  1536. out loud.

  1537. We say

  1538. in here.

  1539. Sing it

  1540. out or

  1541. keep it

  1542. in.

  1543. It doesn't

  1544. matter.

  1545. Our

  1546. response

  1547. this morning

  1548. should be

  1549. Amen.

  1550. And we

  1551. fall down

  1552. and

  1553. worship

  1554. him.

  1555. Father,

  1556. we thank

  1557. you for

  1558. your word,

  1559. for its

  1560. power,

  1561. and the

  1562. power of

  1563. God

  1564. unto

  1565. salvation.

  1566. Help us

  1567. today to

  1568. rejoice in

  1569. the Lamb

  1570. and to

  1571. see him

  1572. as King

  1573. of Kings

  1574. and Lord

  1575. of Lords.

  1576. Amen.

  1577. we sing

  1578. in Psalm

  1579. 34 from

  1580. the

  1581. Scottish

  1582. Psalter,

  1583. page 247.

  1584. Scottish

  1585. Psalter is

  1586. Psalm

  1587. 34

  1588. from

  1589. verse

  1590. 8.

  1591. The tune

  1592. is

  1593. Denfield.

  1594. O taste

  1595. and see

  1596. that God

  1597. is good,

  1598. who trusts

  1599. in him

  1600. is blessed.

  1601. Fear God

  1602. has

  1603. saints,

  1604. none that

  1605. in fear

  1606. shall be

  1607. with want

  1608. oppressed.

  1609. Singing

  1610. to verse

  1611. 15,

  1612. to God's

  1613. praise,

  1614. O taste

  1615. and see

  1616. that God

  1617. is good.

  1618. Standing

  1619. need

  1620. to sing.

  1621. Amen.

  1622. Thank you.

  1623. Thank you.

  1624. Thank you.

  1625. Thank you.

1626. And now may the grace of Lord Jesus, the love of God the Father, the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be upon us all now and forever. Amen.

  1627. Thank you.

  1628. Thank you.
