  1. Well, we'll turn back to our reading in Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  2. We're going to look together this evening, verse 10 down to verse 15.

  3. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers.

  4. And then down at verse 15, he is, as it says here, the deliverer of all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

  5. He is a deliverer.

  6. We're looking this evening at Jesus as he's presented to us in this passage, and in particular in these two ways.

  7. As we see in verse 11, how he's not ashamed to call them brothers.

  8. We see Jesus as a brother here.

  9. And then in verse 15, we see Jesus as a deliverer or a redeemer there.

  10. But it's in the midst, too, of the one who is at work as well.

  11. Here we see the devil at work there in verse 14 as well.

  12. So we have Jesus there in the midst of this battle.

  13. And in many ways, that's the battle that Jesus has fought for us.

  14. As we think of coming to approach another time of communion in our midst.

  15. As we think of remembering the Lord's death until he come.

  16. We see here in this passage how he has come to conquer death itself.

  17. Death is a great fear for many people.

  18. And it certainly was in the case of the Hebrews, as the writer was here outlining for us.

  19. Verse 15 makes that clear for us that death was what they were subject to, lifelong slavery.

  20. It was a fear of death that they had.

  21. And that was because they were living in the midst.

  22. He was writing.

  23. These were mainly Jews.

  24. So they were people who understood who God was.

  25. They understood the Old Testament.

  26. But to come and put their trust in Jesus was a huge step for them.

  27. Because it would lead to persecution.

  28. It would lead to rejection.

  29. It could even lead to death.

  30. That's what that verse is making clear for us.

  31. They were living in that fear of death.

  32. And yet, in the midst of this, Jesus is seen as being the one who comes alongside them.

  33. The one who fulfills that promise to his people.

  34. That never will he leave them.

  35. Never will he forsake them.

  36. And we see that in a wonderful way, how he is a brother and a redeemer.

  37. So these people, they had a fear of living in a Christian way.

  38. What's our greatest fear today?

  39. What's your greatest fear in life?

  40. Or do you feel yourself as if you are free to live your life the way that you wanted?

  41. We can often think of other places in the world where freedom is not as prevalent as we have it.

  42. We think of places like North Korea, for example.

  43. One you often find on the World Watch list as it is, where persecution is prevalent.

  44. Where we see North Korea as very often that number one nation.

  45. Where persecution against the Christian faith is so intense.

  46. And therefore, there isn't that freedom to live the Christian life.

  47. And it's true in other places in the world as well.

  48. The World Watch list, as it's called, highlights the hundred most persecuted countries in the world.

  49. Places where to live as a Christian is a fearful thing.

  50. And especially that fear of your very life being taken from you.

  51. But it's something where we maybe feel, well, that's not our experience.

  52. We have that freedom to live.

  53. But there are still things in our life that have a sense of control over us.

  54. There are many things that we think that we're free to live.

  55. And yet, many things directing the way we go and the way we live.

  56. What we believe and what we do.

  57. For example, in our nation, materialism, secularism.

  58. These are two things that are very prevalent as well.

  59. They come through in all aspects of life.

  60. More and more, people would say, with that sense of a materialistic lifestyle is the goal for many.

  61. Or secularism taking over from the Christian faith.

  62. Where all forms of Christian faith are being pushed aside.

  63. Whether it's among our schools, our education system.

  64. Just our governments.

  65. The way we live.

  66. The way things are ordered.

  67. Everything is being pushed out.

  68. And so are we free to live?

  69. Or are we in some ways being controlled in that sense?

  70. Because behind all of these things, whether it's nations that are persecuting the Christian faith.

  71. Materialism, secularism.

  72. Behind all of these things is a desire to have God put out.

  73. God put away.

  74. And if we put God away, what replaces him?

  75. Well, it's our own ways, our own ideas, and our own thoughts.

  76. And so are we free to live?

  77. Well, in a spiritual sense, we have to think about that as well.

  78. Do we feel that freedom to be a Christian in our nation?

  79. Do we feel that freedom to be a Christian in our community?

  80. Do we feel that freedom to be a Christian in our home, among our friends, among our family?

  81. Because in the midst of that, there can also be a sense of fear.

  82. Because it's not the fear the same way as the Hebrews had it here.

  83. That fear of persecution and death.

  84. But it's a fear that we can often have that holds us back and leads us to live in the wrong way.

  85. To follow the ways of the world.

  86. The ideas of the people around us.

  87. Instead of faithfully following the Lord Jesus Christ.

  88. Fear cripples us so often.

  89. And we're afraid to live the Christian life.

  90. And when you think about it, the Hebrews here, they were afraid for a much more serious thing.

  91. Because they were afraid for their very lives.

  92. Now, we don't have that.

  93. But we have a fear ourselves.

  94. And right from the outset of this book, and as we look at it this evening,

  95. I want us to see that as we see Jesus,

  96. that he is the one who doesn't take these situations away.

  97. He doesn't take the situation away for the Hebrews here where that persecution was going to be no more.

  98. That fear of death was going to be no more.

  99. But he gives them an assurance that he is with them.

  100. And the same is true for us.

  101. That whatever our fears, whatever the things that are crippling us,

  102. and even is so paralyzed by fear,

  103. that the Lord is able to assure us that he is with us.

  104. That he will not leave his people.

  105. That's what we want to see this evening.

  106. This Jesus who is a brother.

  107. This Jesus who is a redeemer.

  108. Right from the outset of this book,

  109. there's a real sense of the reality of who Jesus is.

  110. The first chapter is a wonderful chapter in terms of,

  111. if you look at the first heading in the ESV Bible,

  112. the supremacy of God's Son,

  113. the supremacy of Jesus Christ,

  114. how he is over all.

  115. And it's quoting there from the Old Testament,

  116. many different quotes.

  117. And he sent his Son

  118. that we might have that salvation

  119. as it comes to the end of chapter 1.

  120. But then into chapter 2,

  121. it's reminding us and all of God's people,

  122. we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard,

  123. lest we drift away from it.

  124. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable,

  125. and every transgression and disobedience

  126. received a just retribution,

  127. how shall we escape

  128. if we neglect such a great salvation?

  129. There is this great salvation available to us,

  130. and we're almost afraid.

  131. In our fear, we're neglecting,

  132. we're rejecting this great salvation.

  133. So the writer to the Hebrews is writing

  134. to encourage the people and ourselves

  135. to put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ

  136. and to know the salvation that he offers to his people

  137. and to see it in the midst of all the challenges

  138. that this world presents to us,

  139. the temptations,

  140. the powers of evil that are at work,

  141. as you see in verse 14,

  142. how the devil is mentioned there

  143. in the sense that he is prowling always around

  144. to tempt us away,

  145. to take us away from this salvation.

  146. But as we fix our eyes on Jesus,

  147. we can say,

  148. he is my Lord,

  149. he is my God,

  150. and he is the one who I will look to.

  151. And who do we have as we look to Jesus then?

  152. Well, the first thing we see here is

  153. Jesus as a brother.

  154. We see this in verse 11.

  155. For he who sanctifies

  156. and those who are sanctified

  157. all have one origin.

  158. That is why he is not ashamed

  159. to call them brothers.

  160. It's a wonderful thought that Jesus

  161. would call us brothers and sisters.

  162. Because there are a number of people in this world

  163. who we would find it very difficult

  164. to be comfortable in their presence.

  165. You think of people in positions of authority.

  166. You think of being with royalty.

  167. You think of being with politicians,

  168. presidents, billionaires,

  169. all kinds of people

  170. who we would be very uncomfortable

  171. in their presence.

  172. We wouldn't know what to say.

  173. We would be so out with our comforts.

  174. So how can we relate

  175. to these kinds of people?

  176. We know nothing of what they are like

  177. and they know nothing of what we are like.

  178. And so we're just not on the same page.

  179. And I guess the same could be said of them as well,

  180. that they are not comfortable

  181. as much in our presence either

  182. when they're dealing with us.

  183. They cannot relate to the normal human being,

  184. as it were,

  185. those who experience day-to-day trials

  186. that they've never experienced themselves.

  187. And you see it sometimes

  188. when these kinds of people,

  189. they try and mix in places

  190. that they're not used to

  191. and they're very uncomfortable.

  192. In the same way as we would be uncomfortable

  193. and afraid going into Buckingham Palace,

  194. for example,

  195. if we were ever invited there,

  196. if we invited royalty into our homes,

  197. how comfortable would they be?

  198. A fish out of water,

  199. there would be an awkwardness with it.

  200. And isn't it then remarkable

  201. how you read these words in verse 11 here?

  202. He's not ashamed to call them brothers.

  203. Who is this?

  204. This is Jesus.

  205. This is Jesus speaking to his people then

  206. and as he speaks to his people today.

  207. Not ashamed to call them brothers.

  208. The King of Kings.

  209. The Lord of Lords.

  210. And yet he is there to come

  211. alongside his people.

  212. And the amazing thing is

  213. that he calls his brothers here.

  214. And the very people

  215. who are the cause

  216. of his going to the cross.

  217. Because of our sin,

  218. he came into this world.

  219. Because of our sin,

  220. he died on the cross.

  221. And yet here he is saying,

  222. I'm not ashamed to be called

  223. to call them brothers.

  224. And when you look at verse 3,

  225. chapter 1, verse 3,

  226. you see a little there of who it is.

  227. He is the radiance of the glory of God

  228. and the exact imprint of his nature.

  229. And he upholds the universe

  230. by the word of his power.

  231. This is who it is.

  232. The exact radiance of the glory of God.

  233. The exact imprint of his nature.

  234. He upholds the universe

  235. by the word of his power.

  236. And yet at the same time,

  237. he says he is not ashamed

  238. to call them brothers.

  239. The wonder of who we have

  240. to come alongside us.

  241. The wonder of Jesus

  242. who came into this world

  243. to associate with all.

  244. The rich and the poor.

  245. The sick, the lame,

  246. the suffering.

  247. How he associated with them all.

  248. And he wasn't awkward in coming.

  249. He was very much at home

  250. among his people.

  251. You see it again and again

  252. throughout the scriptures.

  253. How he relates to people.

  254. How he comes alongside people.

  255. How he comes alongside

  256. the children,

  257. the women,

  258. the sick,

  259. the grieving,

  260. the sinners,

  261. as they were called,

  262. the tax collectors.

  263. All of these people.

  264. People who others would find

  265. it very awkward

  266. to be with.

  267. Jesus was alongside them

  268. all because he is not ashamed

  269. to call his own brothers.

  270. And yet he is in the radiance

  271. and the glory

  272. of God his Father.

  273. It's an amazing thing

  274. to think of that.

  275. He's not ashamed

  276. to call us brothers.

  277. And you get a little insight

  278. of this in the quotes

  279. that you see

  280. in verse 12 and 13.

  281. We'll come back to the one

  282. in verse 12 later on.

  283. But the quotes in verse 13

  284. are from Isaiah chapter 8,

    Isaiah 8:17

  285. verse 17 and verse 18.

  286. And the quote in verse 12

  287. is from Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:22

  288. verse 22.

  289. But there in verse 13,

  290. for example,

  291. the second one,

  292. Behold I

  293. and the children

  294. God has given me.

  295. When you look at that

  296. in the Old Testament

  297. in Isaiah chapter 8,

    Isaiah 8:18

  298. verse 18,

  299. it's talking about

  300. Isaiah himself

  301. and the children

  302. that he has

  303. alongside him.

  304. And Isaiah is writing

  305. there in the time

  306. of great suffering

  307. ahead for the people.

  308. And yet he is writing

  309. with that confidence

  310. that God will be with them.

  311. The children

  312. that he has given him

  313. in that day

  314. are those reminders to him

  315. that God

  316. is going to be faithful.

  317. If you look up Isaiah 8

  318. later on,

  319. you'll see it

  320. for yourselves.

  321. So there's that idea

  322. of the nature of family

  323. and God being with Isaiah

  324. and the family there.

  325. But here's applying

  326. to Jesus.

  327. And so what is it saying?

  328. Behold I and the children

  329. God has given me.

  330. He is saying here

  331. that God has given

  332. to him his people.

  333. And that he is the one

  334. who is looking after

  335. his people.

  336. That he is the one

  337. who is not ashamed

  338. to call them brothers.

  339. Here I am

  340. and the children

  341. that you have given me.

  342. The people

  343. that you have given

  344. to me.

  345. Tolstoy,

  346. the great Russian writer,

  347. said of him,

  348. he was once passing

  349. through a street

  350. one day

  351. and a beggar

  352. stopped him

  353. and pleaded with him

  354. for some money.

  355. And Tolstoy put his

  356. hands in his pockets

  357. and wasn't able

  358. to find any money.

  359. And so he said to him,

  360. please don't be angry

  361. with me on my brother,

  362. but I have nothing

  363. with me.

  364. If I did,

  365. I would give you

  366. something.

  367. And the beggar

  368. looked up

  369. with a face

  370. that was suddenly

  371. beaming.

  372. And he said,

  373. you've given me

  374. more than I asked

  375. for.

  376. You have called me

  377. brother.

  378. That sense of

  379. connection

  380. was there.

  381. That sense of

  382. not just being

  383. looked down

  384. upon,

  385. not just being

  386. thought as

  387. nothing

  388. in this world,

  389. just a poor beggar,

  390. but to be

  391. acknowledged

  392. as a brother

  393. made all the difference.

  394. And what a difference

  395. this makes to us

  396. as we think of

  397. everything that we

  398. have to face up

  399. to in this life.

  400. All the fears

  401. that we have.

  402. Imagine it to the

  403. people that

  404. the Hebrews

  405. that we're being

  406. written to

  407. in the fear

  408. of persecution

  409. and even death.

  410. Here is Jesus

  411. saying,

  412. I'm not ashamed

  413. to call you

  414. brothers.

  415. And for you

  416. and for me

  417. the same

  418. is true.

  419. But are we

  420. ashamed

  421. of him?

  422. Are you

  423. ashamed

  424. of him

  425. tonight?

  426. That's the

  427. other side

  428. of the coin

  429. here.

  430. We looked

  431. at this

  432. last week

  433. in Mark

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  434. chapter 8

  435. in verse 38.

  436. Whoever is

  437. ashamed of me

  438. and of my

  439. words

  440. in this

  441. adulterous

  442. and sinful

  443. generation,

  444. of him

  445. will the

  446. Son of Man

  447. also be ashamed

  448. when he comes

  449. in the glory

  450. of his Father

  451. with the holy

  452. angels.

  453. We were

  454. looking at it

  455. last week,

  456. that sense

  457. of just

  458. disassociating

  459. ourselves

  460. with him.

  461. He is

  462. not ashamed

  463. to call

  464. us

  465. brothers.

  466. The one

  467. who,

  468. as we see

  469. there in

  470. verse 3

  471. of chapter 1,

  472. is the

  473. radiance

  474. of the

  475. glory

  476. of God.

  477. Are we

  478. ashamed

  479. of him?

  480. What fear

  481. do we have

  482. most

  483. in this

  484. world?

  485. Well,

  486. the fear

  487. of the

  488. Lord

  489. is the

  490. beginning

  491. of wisdom,

  492. as it

  493. says.

  494. And that

  495. is a

  496. right

  497. reverence

  498. towards

  499. God.

  500. A

  501. right

  502. reverence

  503. towards

  504. Jesus,

  505. the one

  506. who is

  507. not

  508. ashamed

  509. to

  510. call

  511. us

  512. brothers.

  513. The second

  514. thing we

  515. see here

  516. is this

  517. is written

  518. in the

  519. midst

  520. of the

  521. fear

  522. of death

  523. and the

  524. one

  525. who has

  526. the power

  527. of death,

  528. as verse

  529. 14 says,

  530. that is

  531. the devil.

  532. The

  533. reality

  534. of that

  535. fear

  536. in this

  537. life

  538. is seen

  539. here.

  540. And

  541. since

  542. therefore,

  543. in verse

  544. 14,

  545. since

  546. therefore the

  547. children share

  548. in flesh

  549. and blood,

  550. he himself

  551. likewise

  552. partook of

  553. the same

  554. things,

  555. that through

  556. death he

  557. might destroy

  558. the one

  559. who has

  560. power of

  561. death,

  562. that is

  563. the devil,

  564. and deliver

  565. all those

  566. who through

  567. fear of

  568. death

  569. were subject

  570. to lifelong

  571. slavery.

  572. fear of

  573. fear.

  574. There is

  575. this sense

  576. of

  577. acknowledgement,

  578. what is

  579. ahead

  580. for us?

  581. Who is

  582. in control

  583. in this

  584. world?

  585. In many

  586. ways,

  587. because of

  588. the situation

  589. that these

  590. people were

  591. finding themselves

  592. in,

  593. they couldn't

  594. see that

  595. God was

  596. in control.

  597. It was

  598. almost like

  599. evil was

  600. in control.

  601. And as we

  602. look at our

  603. own world

  604. today,

  605. that is

  606. the fear

  607. that we

  608. can have

  609. us

  610. well,

  611. that everywhere

  612. we look,

  613. there is

  614. evil on

  615. all corners

  616. of the

  617. globe.

  618. There is

  619. wickedness,

  620. there is

  621. so many

  622. things that

  623. are wrong,

  624. there is

  625. people dying,

  626. there is

  627. people suffering

  628. all around

  629. us.

  630. And we

  631. see that in

  632. so many

  633. ways,

  634. but we see

  635. it in our

  636. own lives

  637. too.

  638. Do you see

  639. it in your

  640. own life?

  641. Do you see

  642. it in the

  643. way that

  644. your life

  645. is going?

  646. The way

  647. things come

  648. across your

  649. path from

  650. a day-to-day

  651. experience,

  652. you see it

  653. in the

  654. struggles that

  655. you have

  656. on a

  657. daily basis,

  658. the things

  659. that you

  660. hear,

  661. the news

  662. that comes

  663. your way,

  664. there is a

  665. sense of

  666. dismay so

  667. often,

  668. disarray in

  669. all our

  670. lives,

  671. and it

  672. seems like

  673. evil is

  674. just winning.

  675. Satan is

  676. the adversary

  677. here,

  678. but Jesus

  679. has power

  680. over him

  681. as well.

  682. Because he

  683. came to

  684. deliver all

  685. those who

  686. through fear

  687. of death

  688. were subject

  689. to lifelong

  690. slavery.

  691. He came

  692. to deliver.

  693. We see

  694. here our

  695. weakness as

  696. he speaks

  697. of flesh

  698. and blood

  699. in verse

  700. 14.

  701. When we

  702. think of

  703. that,

  704. we often

  705. think of

  706. our own

  707. lives.

  708. we are

  709. flesh and

  710. blood.

  711. Yes,

  712. we are

  713. made in

  714. the image

  715. of God,

  716. but we

  717. are still

  718. a sinful

  719. people.

  720. We are

  721. still sinners

  722. in our

  723. hearts.

  724. And we

  725. see that

  726. in our

  727. day-to-day

  728. experience.

  729. We know

  730. it in how

  731. we live,

  732. in how

  733. we behave,

  734. in how

  735. we act.

  736. We know

  737. it in so

  738. many different

  739. ways.

  740. And we

  741. see that

  742. sin because

  743. there's a

  744. weakness

  745. in us

  746. all.

  747. And we

  748. may be

  749. asked,

  750. well,

  751. but Jesus

  752. knows

  753. nothing of

  754. this.

  755. Jesus

  756. doesn't

  757. understand

  758. my

  759. sufferings.

  760. Jesus

  761. doesn't

  762. understand

  763. my

  764. temptations.

  765. But yet

  766. here we

  767. see that

  768. he does.

  769. We share

  770. in flesh

  771. and blood.

  772. He himself,

  773. in verse

  774. 14,

  775. likewise,

  776. partook of

  777. the same

  778. things,

  779. that through

  780. death he

  781. might destroy

  782. the one who

  783. has power

  784. of death.

  785. he partook,

  786. he took

  787. on flesh

  788. and blood

  789. just as

  790. we are.

  791. He was

  792. tempted

  793. beyond

  794. anything that

  795. we've been

  796. tempted

  797. ourselves.

  798. He knows

  799. out every

  800. experience,

  801. he knows

  802. how hard

  803. it is.

  804. And that

  805. is how

  806. he can

  807. relate to

  808. us as

  809. brothers,

  810. as sisters

  811. in the

  812. Lord.

  813. You may

  814. say to

  815. yourself,

  816. but he

  817. knows

  818. nothing

  819. of my

  820. struggle,

  821. he knows

  822. nothing of

  823. my sin,

  824. he knows

  825. nothing of

  826. the experiences

  827. I've had

  828. in my

  829. life,

  830. but he

  831. knows it

  832. all.

  833. Psalm

  834. 139,

  835. as we

  836. sang together,

  837. reminds us

  838. of that,

  839. there is

  840. nothing

  841. hidden

  842. from him.

  843. And so

  844. in our

  845. experience,

  846. he knows.

  847. He knows

  848. our

  849. temptations,

  850. he knows

  851. our weakness,

  852. he knows

  853. our suffering,

  854. he knows

  855. all of

  856. these things,

  857. and he

  858. knows how

  859. the devil

  860. is the

  861. one who

  862. is active.

  863. Thomas

  864. Brooks,

  865. a famous

  866. writer,

  867. once said,

  868. Satan

  869. promises

  870. the best,

  871. but pays

  872. the worst.

  873. He

  874. promises

  875. honor and

  876. pays with

  877. disgrace.

  878. He

  879. promises

  880. pleasure and

  881. pays with

  882. pain.

  883. He

  884. promises

  885. profit and

  886. pays with

  887. loss.

  888. He

  889. promises

  890. life and

  891. pays

  892. with

  893. death.

  894. That's

  895. the

  896. promises

  897. of

  898. Satan.

  899. But the

  900. promises

  901. of

  902. Jesus

  903. is that

  904. he is

  905. able to

  906. deliver

  907. those who

  908. through

  909. fear of

  910. death

  911. were

  912. subject

  913. to

  914. lifelong

  915. slavery.

  916. To

  917. deliver

  918. and to

  919. give

  920. life.

  921. That is

  922. a promise

  923. he gives

  924. to us

  925. through

  926. scripture.

  927. I

  928. have

  929. come

  930. that

  931. they

  932. might

  933. have

  934. life

  935. and

  936. have

  937. it

  938. to

  939. the

  940. full

  941. as

  942. the

  943. promise

  944. of

  945. Jesus.

  946. So he

  947. is the

  948. destroyer

  949. of the

  950. one who

  951. has

  952. power of

  953. death.

  954. He

  955. is the

  956. destroyer

  957. of

  958. death

  959. itself.

  960. And that

  961. is where

  962. we have

  963. hope as

  964. well.

  965. Again,

  966. you think

  967. of the

  968. Hebrews

  969. he was

  970. writing

  971. to.

  972. When

  973. they hear

  974. these

  975. things,

  976. he has

  977. come

  978. to

  979. destroy

  980. the

  981. one

  982. who

  983. has

  984. power

  985. over

  986. death.

  987. What

  988. relief,

  989. what

  990. hope

  991. they

  992. had.

  993. Do

  994. you

  995. have

  996. that

  997. hope

  998. for

  999. yourself?

  1000. Do

  1001. you

  1002. have

  1003. that

  1004. hope

  1005. and

  1006. the

  1007. fear

  1008. of

  1009. death

  1010. in

  1011. your

  1012. own

  1013. life?

  1014. We

  1015. know

  1016. it's

  1017. coming.

  1018. We

  1019. don't

  1020. know

  1021. when.

  1022. And

  1023. what

  1024. can

  1025. help

  1026. us

  1027. in

  1028. it

  1029. is

  1030. to

  1031. know

  1032. the

  1033. one

  1034. who

  1035. is

  1036. the

  1037. destroyer

  1038. of

  1039. death.

  1040. Jesus

  1041. who

  1042. came.

  1043. The

  1044. third

  1045. and

  1046. final

  1047. thing

  1048. we

  1049. see

  1050. here

  1051. is

  1052. Jesus

  1053. as

  1054. redeemer.

  1055. And

  1056. that

  1057. is

  1058. in

  1059. verse

  1060. 15.

  1061. Deliverer.

  1062. That

  1063. is a

  1064. word

  1065. there

  1066. we

  1067. can

  1068. take

  1069. as

  1070. redeemer.

  1071. And

  1072. deliver

  1073. all

  1074. those

  1075. who

  1076. through

  1077. fear

  1078. of

  1079. death

  1080. were

  1081. subject

  1082. to

  1083. lifelong

  1084. slavery.

  1085. There's

  1086. never

  1087. a

  1088. time

  1089. when

  1090. Jesus

  1091. is

  1092. not

  1093. enough.

  1094. And

  1095. yet

  1096. the

  1097. world

  1098. will

  1099. tell

  1100. us

  1101. you

  1102. don't

  1103. need

  1104. him.

  1105. You

  1106. can

  1107. manage

  1108. without

  1109. him.

  1110. You

  1111. can

  1112. live

  1113. your

  1114. life

  1115. as

  1116. you

  1117. want.

  1118. You

  1119. don't

  1120. need

  1121. Jesus.

  1122. But

  1123. we

  1124. do.

  1125. Because

  1126. he

  1127. is the

  1128. only

  1129. way

  1130. to

  1131. salvation.

  1132. He

  1133. is

  1134. the

  1135. one

  1136. who

  1137. has

  1138. all

  1139. supremacy

  1140. as

  1141. chapter

  1142. one

  1143. makes

  1144. clear

  1145. for

  1146. us.

  1147. The

  1148. exact

  1149. imprint

  1150. of

  1151. the

  1152. nature

  1153. of

  1154. God,

  1155. the

  1156. one

  1157. who

  1158. upholds

  1159. the

  1160. universe

  1161. by

  1162. the

  1163. word

  1164. of

  1165. his

  1166. power.

  1167. He

  1168. is

  1169. the

  1170. one

  1171. who

  1172. came

  1173. to

  1174. save

  1175. us

  1176. from

  1177. our

  1178. sins,

  1179. to

  1180. deliver

  1181. us

  1182. from

  1183. the

  1184. power

  1185. of

  1186. death.

  1187. He

  1188. is

  1189. a

  1190. redeemer.

  1191. And

  1192. he

  1193. is

  1194. the

  1195. one

  1196. who

  1197. we

  1198. need.

  1199. And

  1200. Jesus

  1201. came.

  1202. He

  1203. came

  1204. like

  1205. us

  1206. in

  1207. every

  1208. way.

  1209. And

  1210. yet

  1211. was

  1212. without

  1213. sin.

  1214. But

  1215. he

  1216. gave

  1217. his

  1218. life.

  1219. He

  1220. laid

  1221. down

  1222. his

  1223. life.

  1224. That

  1225. is what

  1226. we

  1227. will

  1228. come

  1229. to

  1230. remember

  1231. in a

  1232. few

  1233. weeks

  1234. time.

  1235. That

  1236. he

  1237. gave

  1238. his

  1239. life

  1240. for

  1241. our

  1242. sins.

  1243. That

  1244. he

  1245. rose

  1246. again

  1247. on the

  1248. third

  1249. day

  1250. that

  1251. we

  1252. might

  1253. have

  1254. life

  1255. through

  1256. him.

  1257. And

  1258. you

  1259. look

  1260. at

  1261. that

  1262. as

  1263. I

  1264. said

  1265. in

  1266. verse

  1267. 12

  1268. the

  1269. quote

  1270. from

  1271. Psalm

  1272. 22.

  1273. Psalm

  1274. 22

  1275. is

  1276. one

  1277. we

  1278. often

  1279. associate

  1280. with

  1281. the

  1282. death

  1283. of

  1284. Jesus.

  1285. It

  1286. outlines

  1287. it

  1288. to

  1289. us

  1290. how

  1291. he

  1292. suffered,

  1293. how

  1294. he

  1295. was

  1296. forsaken,

  1297. all

  1298. of

  1299. these

  1300. things.

  1301. But

  1302. in

  1303. verse

  1304. 12

  1305. there's

  1306. a

  1307. quote

  1308. from

  1309. verse

  1310. 22

  1311. of

  1312. that

  1313. psalm.

  1314. I

  1315. will

  1316. tell

  1317. of

  1318. your

  1319. name

  1320. to

  1321. my

  1322. brothers

  1323. in the

  1324. midst

  1325. of the

  1326. congregation.

  1327. I

  1328. will

  1329. sing

  1330. your

  1331. praise.

  1332. What

  1333. do we

  1334. see

  1335. here?

  1336. We

  1337. see

  1338. here

  1339. Jesus

  1340. who

  1341. is

  1342. victorious

  1343. at

  1344. the

  1345. cross.

  1346. We

  1347. see

  1348. Jesus

  1349. here

  1350. who

  1351. as

  1352. Isaiah

  1353. says

  1354. he

  1355. will

  1356. see

  1357. of

  1358. the

  1359. travel

  1360. of

  1361. his

  1362. soul

  1363. and

  1364. be

  1365. satisfied.

  1366. He

  1367. will

  1368. look

  1369. on

  1370. his

  1371. people.

  1372. He

  1373. will

  1374. look

  1375. on

  1376. his

  1377. brothers

  1378. as

  1379. it

  1380. says

  1381. here

  1382. in

  1383. the

  1384. midst

  1385. of

  1386. the

  1387. congregation

  1388. and

  1389. he

  1390. will

  1391. sing

  1392. praise

  1393. because

  1394. he

  1395. is

  1396. victorious

  1397. at

  1398. the

  1399. cross.

  1400. He

  1401. is

  1402. the

  1403. redeemer

  1404. of

  1405. his

  1406. people.

  1407. You

  1408. think

  1409. of

  1410. that

  1411. and

  1412. all

  1413. that

  1414. Jesus

  1415. has

  1416. done.

  1417. Psalm

  1418. 22

  1419. takes

  1420. us

  1421. all

  1422. the

  1423. way

  1424. through

  1425. that

  1426. experience.

  1427. My

  1428. God,

  1429. my

  1430. God,

  1431. why

  1432. have

  1433. you

  1434. forsaken

  1435. me?

  1436. All

  1437. of

  1438. his

  1439. suffering,

  1440. all

  1441. of

  1442. his

  1443. experiences

  1444. that

  1445. he

  1446. went

  1447. through

  1448. and

  1449. yet

  1450. he

  1451. is

  1452. able

  1453. to

  1454. come

  1455. to

  1456. that

  1457. point

  1458. where

  1459. in

  1460. the

  1461. midst

  1462. of

  1463. the

  1464. congregation,

  1465. he

  1466. will

  1467. sing

  1468. your

  1469. praise.

  1470. The

  1471. praises

  1472. of

  1473. his

  1474. people,

  1475. the

  1476. praises

  1477. of

  1478. those

  1479. who

  1480. are

  1481. his

  1482. brothers

  1483. and

  1484. sisters.

  1485. He

  1486. came

  1487. for

  1488. his

  1489. people.

  1490. He

  1491. took

  1492. on

  1493. flesh

  1494. and

  1495. blood

  1496. to be

  1497. like

  1498. us

  1499. and

  1500. he

  1501. partook

  1502. of

  1503. the

  1504. same

  1505. things

  1506. as

  1507. it

  1508. says

  1509. there

  1510. in

  1511. verse

  1512. 14

  1513. the

  1514. same

  1515. experience

  1516. that

  1517. you

  1518. and

  1519. I

  1520. have

  1521. but

  1522. he

  1523. did

  1524. it

  1525. that

  1526. through

  1527. death

  1528. he

  1529. might

  1530. destroy

  1531. the

  1532. one

  1533. who

  1534. has

  1535. power

  1536. over

  1537. death

  1538. and

  1539. because

  1540. of

  1541. what

  1542. he

  1543. has

  1544. done

  1545. it

  1546. means

  1547. that

  1548. you

  1549. and

  1550. I

  1551. can

  1552. know

  1553. that

  1554. salvation

  1555. in

  1556. him

  1557. that

  1558. wonderful

  1559. passage

  1560. in

  1561. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1562. chapter

  1563. 8

  1564. where

  1565. it

  1566. speaks

  1567. of

  1568. what

  1569. shall

  1570. separate

  1571. us

  1572. from

  1573. the

  1574. love

  1575. of

  1576. God

  1577. well

  1578. it

  1579. says

  1580. nothing

  1581. will

  1582. separate

  1583. us

  1584. from

  1585. the

  1586. love

  1587. of

  1588. God

  1589. that

  1590. is

  1591. in

  1592. Christ

  1593. Jesus

  1594. our

  1595. Lord

  1596. not

  1597. even

  1598. death

  1599. that

  1600. is

  1601. the

  1602. comfort

  1603. for

  1604. the

  1605. Hebrews

  1606. is

  1607. it

  1608. your

  1609. comfort

  1610. tonight

  1611. is

  1612. it

  1613. the

  1614. comfort

  1615. that

  1616. you

  1617. lean

  1618. upon

  1619. in

  1620. the

  1621. midst

  1622. of

  1623. this

  1624. world

  1625. and

  1626. all

  1627. that

  1628. comes

  1629. our

  1630. way

  1631. when

  1632. we

  1633. are

  1634. afraid

  1635. of

  1636. so

  1637. many

  1638. things

  1639. do we

  1640. have

  1641. the

  1642. comfort

  1643. of

  1644. Jesus

  1645. our

  1646. brother

  1647. and our

  1648. redeemer

  1649. Richard

  1650. Baxter

  1651. he once

  1652. said

  1653. we paid

  1654. nothing

  1655. for God's

  1656. eternal

  1657. love

  1658. and nothing

  1659. for the

  1660. son

  1661. of his

  1662. love

  1663. and nothing

  1664. for his

  1665. spirit

  1666. and our

  1667. grace

  1668. and faith

  1669. and nothing

  1670. for our

  1671. eternal

  1672. rest

  1673. we paid

  1674. nothing

  1675. for any

  1676. of these

  1677. things

  1678. but he

  1679. goes on

  1680. to say

  1681. what an

  1682. astonishing

  1683. thought

  1684. it will

  1685. be

  1686. to think

  1687. of

  1688. the

  1689. unmeasurable

  1690. difference

  1691. between

  1692. our

  1693. deservings

  1694. and our

  1695. receivings

  1696. oh how

  1697. free was

  1698. all this

  1699. love

  1700. and how

  1701. free

  1702. is this

  1703. enjoyed

  1704. glory

  1705. we paid

  1706. nothing

  1707. for it

  1708. what a

  1709. difference

  1710. between

  1711. our

  1712. deservings

  1713. what do

  1714. we

  1715. deserve

  1716. we

  1717. deserve

  1718. nothing

  1719. and our

  1720. receivings

  1721. what do

  1722. we receive

  1723. by grace

  1724. the salvation

  1725. that is

  1726. offered

  1727. through him

  1728. the free

  1729. gift

  1730. through the

  1731. one who

  1732. came

  1733. as our

  1734. redeemer

  1735. Jonathan

  1736. Edwards

  1737. another famous

  1738. writer

  1739. speaking about

  1740. all that we

  1741. have

  1742. from God

  1743. he said

  1744. wisdom

  1745. we have

  1746. wisdom

  1747. the pardon

  1748. of sin

  1749. deliverance

  1750. acceptance

  1751. in God's

  1752. favor

  1753. grace

  1754. holiness

  1755. through

  1756. comfort

  1757. and happiness

  1758. eternal

  1759. life

  1760. and glory

  1761. and he

  1762. says yes

  1763. God is

  1764. both the

  1765. purchaser

  1766. and the

  1767. price for

  1768. all of

  1769. these things

  1770. for Christ

  1771. who is

  1772. God

  1773. purchased

  1774. these

  1775. blessings

  1776. by offering

  1777. himself

  1778. as the

  1779. price

  1780. of our

  1781. salvation

  1782. salvation

  1783. he

  1784. is

  1785. our

  1786. redeemer

  1787. but is

  1788. he

  1789. are you

  1790. afraid

  1791. this

  1792. evening

  1793. to give

  1794. yourself

  1795. to him

  1796. are you

  1797. afraid

  1798. that he

  1799. will not

  1800. be able

  1801. to keep

  1802. you

  1803. are you

  1804. afraid

  1805. that he

  1806. will not

  1807. be enough

  1808. the Hebrews

  1809. were

  1810. because they

  1811. didn't

  1812. understand

  1813. who Jesus

  1814. was

  1815. that is

  1816. what the

  1817. writer

  1818. is doing

  1819. for them

  1820. here

  1821. he is

  1822. showing them

  1823. his

  1824. supremacy

  1825. he is

  1826. showing them

  1827. his power

  1828. and he is

  1829. showing them

  1830. his love

  1831. he is

  1832. not ashamed

  1833. to call

  1834. them

  1835. brothers

  1836. because he

  1837. is a

  1838. redeemer

  1839. for his

  1840. people

  1841. is he

  1842. your

  1843. redeemer

  1844. is he

  1845. your

  1846. brother

  1847. do not

  1848. be ashamed

  1849. to call

  1850. him

  1851. brother

  1852. because he

  1853. is not

  1854. ashamed

  1855. to call

  1856. his people

  1857. my brothers

  1858. my sisters

  1859. who I

  1860. have

  1861. redeemed

  1862. who I

  1863. have

  1864. bought

  1865. with a

  1866. price

  1867. let us

  1868. pray

  1869. Lord our

  1870. gracious

  1871. God

  1872. we do

  1873. bless you

  1874. for your

  1875. mercies

  1876. to us

  1877. we deserve

  1878. nothing from

  1879. you and

  1880. yet we

  1881. receive

  1882. everything

  1883. through

  1884. Jesus

  1885. Christ

  1886. and we

  1887. thank you

  1888. for all

  1889. that he

  1890. has done

  1891. for us

  1892. for all

  1893. that we

  1894. could not

  1895. do or

  1896. achieve

  1897. for

  1898. ourselves

  1899. we thank

  1900. you that

  1901. he came

  1902. to destroy

  1903. and to

  1904. deliver

  1905. his people

  1906. and destroy

  1907. the one

  1908. who has

  1909. the power

  1910. of death

  1911. we thank

  1912. you Lord

  1913. that it

  1914. has been

  1915. done

  1916. for us

  1917. and may

  1918. we not

  1919. be ashamed

  1920. of him

  1921. who calls

  1922. us

  1923. brothers

  1924. Lord hear

  1925. our prayers

  1926. go before

  1927. us

  1928. pardon

  1929. our sins

  1930. in Jesus

  1931. name

  1932. Amen

  1933. Amen

  1934. we're going

  1935. to conclude

  1936. by singing

  1937. in Psalm

  1938. 46

  1939. the Scottish

  1940. Psalter

  1941. version

  1942. Psalm 46

  1943. we'll sing

  1944. from verse

  1945. 1 to

  1946. verse

  1947. 5

  1948. page 271

  1949. of the

  1950. psalm books

  1951. God is

  1952. our refuge

  1953. and our

  1954. strength

  1955. and straits

  1956. of present

  1957. day

  1958. therefore

  1959. although the

  1960. earth we

  1961. move we

  1962. will not

  1963. be afraid

  1964. we'll sing

  1965. from verse

  1966. 1 to 5

  1967. the tune

  1968. of Stroud

  1969. Water

  1970. we stand

  1971. to sing

  1972. to God's

  1973. praise

  1974. God is

  1975. our refuge

  1976. and our

  1977. strength

  1978. in

  1979. straits

  1980. of

  1981. present

  1982. day

  1983. therefore

  1984. although

  1985. the

  1986. earth

  1987. rain

  1988. we

  1989. will

  1990. not

  1991. be

  1992. afraid

  1993. though

  1994. hills

  1995. amidst

  1996. the

  1997. seas

  1998. be

  1999. cast

  2000. though

  2001. waters

  2002. roaring

  2003. make

  2004. and

  2005. tram

  2006. be

  2007. yet

  2008. though

  2009. the

  2010. hills

  2011. by

  2012. swelling

  2013. seas

  2014. to

  2015. shake

  2016. our

  2017. river

  2018. earth

  2019. streams

  2020. to

  2021. glad

  2022. city

  2023. of

  2024. !

  2025. city

  2026. of

  2027. our

  2028. God

  2029. the

  2030. holy

  2031. place

  2032. where

  2033. in

  2034. the

  2035. Lord

  2036. most

  2037. high

  2038. hath

  2039. is

  2040. abode

  2041. God

  2042. in

  2043. the

  2044. midst

  2045. of

  2046. her

  2047. doth

  2048. dwell

  2049. nothing

  2050. shall

  2051. her

  2052. remove

  2053. the

  2054. Lord

  2055. to

  2056. and

  2057. help

  2058. her

  2059. will

  2060. and

  2061. that

  2062. bright

  2063. early

  2064. blue

  2065. after the

  2066. benediction

  2067. I'll go to the

  2068. main door

  2069. we'll close

  2070. with the

  2071. benediction

  2072. now may

  2073. grace

  2074. mercy

  2075. and peace

  2076. from God

  2077. Father

  2078. Son

  2079. and Holy

  2080. Spirit

  2081. rest upon

  2082. and abide

  2083. with you

  2084. all

  2085. now and

  2086. forevermore

  2087. Amen

  2088. that

  2089. that
