  1. Well, let's turn to that passage now that we read in John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  2. ! John chapter 20. We can read once again from verse 24.

    John 20 chapter mention

  3. Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called a twin, was not with them when Jesus came.

  4. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord.

  5. But he said to them, Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails,

  6. and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.

  7. Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them.

  8. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you.

  9. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands,

  10. and put out your hand and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.

  11. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God.

  12. Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me?

  13. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

  14. Isn't it telling sometimes we think of people by what we see as the negatives,

  15. or the things that maybe appear wrong in their lives,

  16. and we think of them in such a way as gives them names according to that.

  17. Thomas has come to be known in history as Doubting Thomas.

  18. Most people today would relate to that,

  19. because of the way that he said here, as we read,

  20. that he refused to believe the testimony of the other disciples,

  21. and would not believe unless he saw Jesus for himself.

  22. So he's called Doubting Thomas.

  23. But then he's also confessing Thomas.

  24. Why don't we refer to him as confessing Thomas?

  25. Why don't we focus on that more positive element in his life?

  26. Because as we'll see this evening, there is no other confession really in the New Testament,

  27. or even in the entire Scripture quite like it.

  28. It's a confession that includes not only a personal testimony to his relationship with Jesus,

  29. but a confession of Jesus as Lord and God.

  30. Within the one confession, you find that wonderful expression,

  31. my Lord and my God.

  32. That is who we should think of when we think about Thomas.

  33. Not that his doubting is something we just push aside as irrelevant,

  34. but here is somebody who came through the instruction and leading of Jesus himself

  35. to make this wonderful personal confession

  36. that is now forever for the whole process of time before us in the words of Scripture.

  37. And as we look at that this evening,

  38. we can see two things, especially just to focus on them.

  39. First of all, Christ's correction of Thomas,

  40. and then Thomas' confession of Christ.

  41. Christ's, first of all, Christ's correction of Thomas,

  42. and then Thomas' confession of Christ.

  43. Now, we read the previous event here from verse 19,

  44. where we find that the first time that Jesus came into the midst of the disciples,

  45. it's almost exactly the same words, and we'll refer to that in a minute,

  46. that Jesus came and stood amongst them,

  47. even with the doors being locked.

  48. We shouldn't wonder about that.

  49. This is the Jesus who performs miracles that people cannot completely fathom or understand,

  50. and the fact that he himself is the greatest miracle

  51. through his coming into the world as the Son of God,

  52. taking our human nature to himself and living a sinless life.

  53. In many respects, that is the great miracle.

  54. And where you see that great miracle,

  55. and where you think of this Jesus and who he is,

  56. and what he was able to do at other times,

  57. we should not be at all surprised or disbelieving

  58. that he actually came into the presence of the disciples here,

  59. even when the doors were locked.

  60. He is there with them and speaks to them in a way that we find recorded there.

  61. But Thomas was absent at that previous event.

  62. He didn't appear with them for whatever reason.

  63. Maybe he was tied up with something else.

  64. We're not told.

  65. We're just told that Thomas was not with them.

  66. And when Jesus came to reveal to them his hands and his side,

  67. and spoke to them in a way that said,

  68. Peace be with you.

  69. As the Father has sent me, even so I'm sending you.

  70. He breathed on them, said,

  71. We receive the Holy Spirit, and so on.

  72. Thomas was absent.

  73. Maybe he had good reason to be absent.

  74. We don't know.

  75. But from the whole tenor of the passage,

  76. it seems that he could have been there,

  77. but for some reason wasn't.

  78. And certainly when Jesus spoke to him on the second occasion,

  79. he didn't speak to him roughly,

  80. but he did speak to him critically

  81. for not having believed the testimony of the disciples

  82. who had seen him on that first occasion

  83. of his appearing amongst them.

  84. And you know, that's something that,

  85. in simple terms,

  86. but yet profoundly important,

  87. that you and I can say of ourselves.

  88. The fact that Christ has promised

  89. to be present in the gatherings of his people,

  90. the fact that Christ is present

  91. in the preaching of the gospel,

  92. the fact that faith comes by hearing,

  93. as Roman 10 puts it,

  94. and hearing by the word of God,

  95. or the word of Christ,

  96. that means that every gathering of God's people

  97. where Christ has promised to be present

  98. is important.

  99. It's significant.

  100. It's somewhere we should always intend to be.

  101. It's something we should always approach

  102. with the opinion,

  103. with the view,

  104. with the desire

  105. to actually meet with Jesus

  106. as he has promised to be

  107. in the midst of his people.

  108. That his Holy Spirit would bring us

  109. by his blessing,

  110. once again,

  111. to meet with Jesus spiritually.

  112. If we're not there,

  113. it's not likely to happen.

  114. And that's one of the sad things,

  115. isn't it really?

  116. In many ways,

  117. it's a tragedy,

  118. how few people around us

  119. and how few people

  120. even of our congregations

  121. regularly come

  122. to every occasion

  123. where Christ is present,

  124. where they can meet with Jesus,

  125. where Jesus can speak to them

  126. and show them the evidences

  127. of his love,

  128. of his death,

  129. of his resurrection.

  130. That's what the gospel

  131. sets out for us.

  132. That's why it's important

  133. that you're here tonight.

  134. Yes, you're here to worship

  135. along with others,

  136. and that worship includes

  137. so many things

  138. that are precious to us.

  139. But we're here to listen to God.

  140. You've not come here

  141. to listen to me,

  142. I hope.

  143. You've come here to listen

  144. to God speaking to you

  145. through his word.

  146. God taking the scriptures

  147. and opening up your mind

  148. and opening up the scriptures

  149. for your mind

  150. to receive them.

  151. This is an important occasion.

  152. And it's made important

  153. by the fact

  154. that you're coming into

  155. the presence of the King.

  156. that Jesus,

  157. through the gospel,

  158. is being presented

  159. to you once again.

  160. Whether it's the case

  161. that we've not yet come

  162. to trust in him,

  163. or whether we've been

  164. trusting in him

  165. for many years,

  166. we're still needy

  167. of meeting with Christ tonight.

  168. Meeting with him

  169. as our Savior,

  170. maybe for the first time,

  171. hopefully,

  172. if we've not done that yet.

  173. But meeting with him

  174. for the umpteenth time,

  175. perhaps.

  176. because we're always in need

  177. of being nurtured

  178. and guided

  179. and taught

  180. by Christ

  181. through his presence,

  182. through his Holy Spirit

  183. in the gatherings

  184. of his people.

  185. So he was missing.

  186. And he missed out

  187. on what had happened

  188. on that occasion.

  189. But then you see

  190. they come to see

  191. the disciples' testimony,

  192. verse 25,

  193. when he came,

  194. the other disciples

  195. told Thomas,

  196. who wasn't with them

  197. when Jesus came

  198. the first time,

  199. the other disciples

  200. told him,

  201. we have seen the Lord.

  202. But then he said

  203. to them firmly,

  204. unless I see

  205. in his hands

  206. the mark of the nails

  207. and place my finger

  208. into the mark of the nails

  209. and place my hand

  210. into his side,

  211. I will never believe.

  212. Now some people would say,

  213. well, Thomas was quite right

  214. surely to say that.

  215. He wasn't prepared

  216. to take anybody else's word

  217. for it.

  218. He wanted to see

  219. Christ for himself.

  220. And if Christ was really

  221. risen from the dead,

  222. was it all that wrong

  223. for him to say

  224. that he would not believe

  225. unless and until

  226. he saw him for himself?

  227. Yes, it was wrong.

  228. You can see that

  229. from the rebuke

  230. Jesus gave him.

  231. Don't be disbelieving,

  232. but believe.

  233. In other words,

  234. he should have listened

  235. and accepted

  236. the testimony

  237. of his fellow disciples.

  238. Why should they

  239. be unreliable?

  240. Why should they have

  241. told him other

  242. than the truth?

  243. Why should he insist

  244. unless he saw him

  245. for himself,

  246. he would not believe

  247. their testimony

  248. as to his resurrection

  249. from the dead?

  250. it was wrong of him

  251. not to accept

  252. their testimony.

  253. And we should always

  254. ourselves be open

  255. to the testimony

  256. of other people

  257. who know the Lord.

  258. Maybe they're from

  259. very different backgrounds

  260. to ours,

  261. very different churches

  262. to ours,

  263. very different congregations

  264. to ours.

  265. But those who genuinely

  266. sincerely know the Lord

  267. and present the Lord

  268. through their lives,

  269. let's not doubt

  270. the veracity

  271. of their life.

  272. Let's not doubt

  273. the genuineness

  274. of their testimony

  275. unless there are other

  276. things that make

  277. that possible.

  278. Here are people

  279. who had seen the Lord,

  280. who had heard the Lord,

  281. who had been spoken

  282. to by the Lord,

  283. who came to Thomas

  284. and said,

  285. we have seen the Lord.

  286. Now, I'm sure they said

  287. more than what you find

  288. there in verse 25.

  289. That's just as the Bible

  290. often does.

  291. It really summarizes

  292. what happened

  293. in a few words.

  294. You can't believe

  295. that it's all

  296. that they said

  297. was,

  298. we have seen the Lord.

  299. They would have undoubtedly

  300. explained to Thomas

  301. how it was

  302. they had seen him,

  303. what they had actually

  304. witnessed,

  305. what he had said

  306. to them.

  307. They wouldn't have just

  308. left it at,

  309. we have seen the Lord.

  310. That's not their way.

  311. But for all of that,

  312. Thomas refused

  313. their testimony.

  314. Thomas did not believe.

  315. Thomas insisted

  316. that he would have

  317. to prove this

  318. for himself

  319. despite the testimony

  320. of his fellow believers.

  321. And so what happened?

  322. Well, verses 26 and 27,

  323. what you find essentially

  324. is Jesus recreating

  325. the event.

  326. It's the same emphasis

  327. in different ways,

  328. same emphasis in many ways,

  329. though there are differences,

  330. where you find

  331. in verse 26

  332. that they were again

  333. together

  334. eight days later

  335. and Thomas

  336. was with them.

  337. That's emphasized.

  338. And

  339. though the doors

  340. were locked,

  341. same as previously,

  342. Jesus came

  343. and stood among them

  344. and said,

  345. peace be with you,

  346. just as he had done before.

  347. And then he turned

  348. and spoke to Thomas.

  349. And when he's saying here,

  350. peace be with you,

  351. we're not going to go

  352. into that,

  353. but it is important

  354. and it's important

  355. that Jesus re-emphasized that

  356. as we'll see probably

  357. for Thomas' benefit

  358. as well as the others

  359. because they had heard it before.

  360. When he says,

  361. peace be with you,

  362. he's really speaking

  363. about what he has himself

  364. done in order to bring

  365. peace between themselves

  366. and God.

  367. It's the peace

  368. of reconciliation,

  369. the peace that he has

  370. effected through the cross

  371. and through his resurrection

  372. from the dead.

  373. He has provided them

  374. with the ground

  375. of their acceptance

  376. with God in himself.

  377. And that's why he's able

  378. to say,

  379. peace be with you.

  380. May this peace

  381. be your experience.

  382. And what an important point

  383. that is for us tonight

  384. as well.

  385. Isn't that what

  386. the Lord is saying

  387. to you and to me

  388. through the gospel tonight?

  389. Isn't he addressing you

  390. and addressing me

  391. with these same terms,

  392. with these same words,

  393. peace be to you?

  394. Isn't he emphasizing

  395. through the gospel

  396. what he has done,

  397. why he has done it,

  398. who it's for,

  399. and how it's important

  400. for us to receive it?

  401. Peace be with you.

  402. The peace of God,

  403. the peace of Christ,

  404. the peace that has come

  405. to be given to his people

  406. instead of condemnation.

  407. There is therefore,

  408. as Paul said to the Romans,

  409. no condemnation

  410. to those who are

  411. in Christ Jesus

  412. there is no condemnation

  413. to them.

  414. In other words,

  415. there's peace for them.

  416. They are at peace with God.

  417. They're in a relationship

  418. with God

  419. where peace is the central

  420. facet of it,

  421. where the previous

  422. relationship

  423. has been replaced,

  424. and where there is now

  425. no condemnation.

  426. They are forgiven their sins.

  427. There's peace

  428. between them

  429. and their God.

  430. But moving on from that,

  431. it's important to notice

  432. that this event

  433. was recreated,

  434. as we've put it,

  435. specifically for the benefit

  436. of Thomas.

  437. The Lord came

  438. into this gathering,

  439. and it's emphasizing

  440. that Thomas

  441. was there at the time,

  442. and then after Jesus

  443. had said,

  444. peace be to you,

  445. peace be with you,

  446. he turned to Thomas

  447. and said,

  448. put your finger here

  449. and see my hands,

  450. and put out your hand

  451. and place it in my side,

  452. and don't be disbelieving,

  453. but believe.

  454. In other words,

  455. Jesus had specifically

  456. arranged this meeting

  457. for whatever benefit

  458. the other disciples

  459. got out of it,

  460. I'm sure they did,

  461. but it was specifically

  462. for Thomas.

  463. His target was Thomas.

  464. He aimed his words

  465. at Thomas.

  466. It was for Thomas' benefit

  467. especially

  468. that he came to re-emphasize

  469. his resurrection

  470. from the dead

  471. and the peace with God

  472. that he mentioned.

  473. Now, isn't that interesting?

  474. Isn't that significant?

  475. Jesus didn't say

  476. about this Thomas

  477. like we might have said,

  478. well, you've had your chance, boy.

  479. You've had your chance.

  480. We were here before.

  481. Jesus came here previously.

  482. You missed out on it.

  483. That was your fault.

  484. No, Jesus didn't say to him,

  485. you could have been here last time,

  486. but you missed out

  487. on a very important event.

  488. And therefore,

  489. I can't say anything more

  490. to you at this point.

  491. No, he didn't do that, did he?

  492. Because this is

  493. the loving, kind Jesus.

  494. The Jesus who takes account

  495. of his people's faults

  496. and his people's failures.

  497. The Jesus who's not content

  498. to leave us

  499. in our own reluctance.

  500. The Jesus who comes before us

  501. in the gospel

  502. and addresses us

  503. and says,

  504. don't be disbelieving,

  505. but believe.

  506. He came here

  507. for Thomas' benefit.

  508. He didn't pass him off.

  509. He didn't say to him,

  510. you've had your chance.

  511. And so there's nothing more

  512. to be said about it.

  513. No, he's following it up.

  514. And that's the same

  515. for everybody here tonight.

  516. If you've not yet come

  517. to accept Christ

  518. and believe in him

  519. and trust in him

  520. for your salvation,

  521. be thankful tonight

  522. that he's not passed you off.

  523. That he's not saying

  524. to you tonight,

  525. you've had previous chances,

  526. so I'm not going to speak

  527. to you again.

  528. You should have done this

  529. the last time,

  530. so therefore this time

  531. it's different.

  532. I have nothing else for you.

  533. That's not the Jesus

  534. we meet with in the gospel.

  535. Jesus has come

  536. through the gospel tonight,

  537. through his spirit

  538. to this place tonight

  539. to speak to you,

  540. to speak to me.

  541. You might have passed him away

  542. reluctantly to believe in him,

  543. reluctant to believe in him.

  544. You might have many times

  545. refused in the past

  546. to give your life over to him,

  547. to trust in him,

  548. to deliver your life

  549. over into his hands.

  550. But he's not left you.

  551. You're here tonight

  552. and he's speaking to you.

  553. And he has something

  554. to say to you.

  555. And the very fact

  556. that you're here means

  557. he's not abandoned you.

  558. He's not saying to you,

  559. your chance is gone.

  560. Your opportunity is past.

  561. Thanks be to God.

  562. We are a patient God.

  563. A patient Savior.

  564. A long-suffering Redeemer.

  565. A God who does not pass us off

  566. despite our failures

  567. or for our failures.

  568. Now that,

  569. no way does that actually

  570. validate the kind of thought

  571. that says,

  572. well, I'll have many

  573. other opportunities then.

  574. That's not why we're saying this.

  575. That's not why it's in the Bible.

  576. It's not here so that we can conclude,

  577. well, because he came back to Thomas,

  578. he's bound to come back to me

  579. if I refuse him tonight.

  580. He's going to come back to me.

  581. I'll be here next week.

  582. You might not be.

  583. And even if you are,

  584. you might never hear his voice again.

  585. Don't guarantee yourself

  586. a hearing with Jesus

  587. if you turn away from him

  588. when he's speaking to you.

  589. He came here for Thomas' benefit.

  590. He's here in the Gospel tonight

  591. for your benefit.

  592. And he's addressing you

  593. as he did Thomas.

  594. Oh, the kindness of Jesus,

  595. friends,

  596. is so amazing, isn't it?

  597. He is so much

  598. above ourselves

  599. and different to ourselves.

  600. How patient are we

  601. with our fellow human beings?

  602. How patient are we

  603. even with our pets?

  604. We get annoyed.

  605. We're easily put off.

  606. But Christ comes back

  607. for Thomas' benefit.

  608. And that's what's emphasized

  609. for you tonight as well

  610. through the Gospel.

  611. So what does he say?

  612. Jesus, first of all,

  613. you see, he knew

  614. what Thomas had said

  615. or thought.

  616. Thomas had said

  617. before Jesus came in

  618. the second time,

  619. there was Thomas

  620. with the other disciples

  621. and Thomas saying to him,

  622. unless I actually see

  623. for myself

  624. the mark of the nails

  625. in his hands

  626. and so on,

  627. I will never believe.

  628. Now, Jesus wasn't

  629. physically present with them.

  630. He came moments after that

  631. into their company,

  632. but he knew

  633. what he had said.

  634. He knew what Thomas'

  635. mind had thought.

  636. And he addressed him

  637. exactly in accordance

  638. with Thomas'

  639. own words.

  640. It was Thomas'

  641. reluctance and refusal

  642. to accept the testimony

  643. of the disciples.

  644. This is what he said.

  645. Thomas,

  646. put your finger here

  647. and see my hands

  648. and put your hand out

  649. and place it in my sight.

  650. These were the terms

  651. that Thomas had refused him on,

  652. refused the testimony on.

  653. He said,

  654. unless I see in his hands

  655. the mark of the nails,

  656. put my finger

  657. into the mark of the nails,

  658. place my hand into his side,

  659. I will never believe.

  660. And here is Jesus saying to him,

  661. I heard you.

  662. I heard what you said.

  663. I know what you said.

  664. And here I am.

  665. And I am now commanding you

  666. to do this.

  667. You refuse to accept

  668. the testimony

  669. of your brother's disciples

  670. on the previous occasion.

  671. And you said,

  672. well,

  673. unless I happen to see his hand,

  674. the mark of the nails,

  675. I will never believe.

  676. Well,

  677. Thomas,

  678. now you're seeing it.

  679. What are you going to do now?

  680. You see,

  681. Jesus addresses exactly

  682. the situation

  683. Thomas himself

  684. had brought about,

  685. the words

  686. that Thomas

  687. had actually spoken of.

  688. It's a marvelous thing

  689. in the Bible,

  690. isn't it,

  691. to realize,

  692. as it often says,

  693. that nothing of our lives

  694. is hidden from God.

  695. None of our words

  696. are hidden from God.

  697. God,

  698. whatever you're thinking

  699. in your mind tonight

  700. as this message goes forth,

  701. God knows what you're thinking.

  702. God knows your conclusions.

  703. God knows what you're saying,

  704. what you're thinking to yourself.

  705. Nobody else knows it.

  706. Nobody else sees

  707. your words floating

  708. above your head.

  709. But God knows it.

  710. Christ knows it.

  711. He knows it exactly.

  712. And while that,

  713. in some ways,

  714. might be disturbing to us,

  715. and indeed,

  716. there's a reason why

  717. it should be disturbing to us

  718. that God sees into our hearts

  719. and sees the very processes

  720. of our mind

  721. and the words that we're using,

  722. it's also immensely comforting,

  723. isn't it,

  724. when you come to actually

  725. see your need

  726. and express your need to God,

  727. you're not coming to a God

  728. who is ignorant

  729. of your situation.

  730. You're not coming to God

  731. as one who has not read

  732. your situation

  733. and who needs to be told

  734. by you what it's about.

  735. He's ahead of you there.

  736. And because He's ahead of you there,

  737. He's more than able

  738. to deal with the situation

  739. you're in

  740. and the condition of your soul.

  741. Remember the woman

  742. who had the hemorrhage of blood

  743. in the Gospels,

  744. Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  745. one version of it,

  746. Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5:30

  747. verse 30.

  748. She reached out

  749. and she said to herself,

  750. if I just touch the hem

  751. of His garment,

  752. I will be healed.

  753. And so she reached out

  754. and there was a huge crowd

  755. jostling around

  756. trying to see Jesus

  757. and she reached out

  758. amongst that crowd

  759. and she touched

  760. the hem of His garment

  761. and immediately

  762. she was cured

  763. of the hemorrhage.

  764. She knew in herself

  765. that the hemorrhage of blood

  766. had been cured,

  767. had been stemmed.

  768. And then remarkably,

  769. Jesus said,

  770. who touched me?

  771. His disciples were amazed.

  772. They saw the crowd around Him

  773. and yet there He is asking,

  774. who touched you?

  775. Who touched me?

  776. Well, the disciples

  777. could have said to Him,

  778. what do you mean

  779. who touched you?

  780. There are dozens of people

  781. here who would have touched you.

  782. Why do you want to know

  783. who touched you?

  784. Most of the people here

  785. might have touched you,

  786. those around you.

  787. But Jesus, you see,

  788. was thinking of

  789. the one specific touch

  790. that had touched Him

  791. in a way no other touch

  792. had at that moment.

  793. the touch of faith,

  794. the touch of trusting,

  795. the touch of looking

  796. for an answer

  797. to her predicament.

  798. And Jesus felt it.

  799. Jesus knew it.

  800. He knew it in Himself.

  801. And that's still the case today.

  802. But it's also the case

  803. on the other side of the issue.

  804. Your unbelief touches Him as well.

  805. He's not unaware

  806. of that unbelief,

  807. as it were,

  808. touching Him

  809. as you express that unbelief,

  810. as you live out

  811. an unbelief in your life,

  812. if that's the case.

  813. Hopefully not.

  814. But if it is,

  815. that's registered with Jesus.

  816. It's not hidden from Him.

  817. And that's one of the reasons

  818. you can be confident

  819. in coming to Him.

  820. Nothing is hidden from Him.

  821. Every aspect of our life

  822. is known to Him.

  823. Every part of our need,

  824. every element of our need,

  825. from the smallest to the greatest,

  826. registers with Him.

  827. Whether it's faith

  828. or unbelief,

  829. but it touches the Savior.

  830. He knows it.

  831. He's aware of it.

  832. And He speaks accordingly.

  833. So Christ knew

  834. what Thomas had said

  835. and what he had thought.

  836. And secondly,

  837. in this recreation of the event,

  838. Christ commanded Thomas

  839. to touch Him

  840. and to touch the evidences.

  841. That's what He said,

  842. as we read,

  843. Reach out your hand.

  844. Come and put your hand

  845. into the mark of the nails.

  846. And see my hands

  847. and put your hand

  848. and place it in my side.

  849. Do not be disbelieving,

  850. but believe.

  851. He commands him

  852. to touch the evidences

  853. of Christ's own resurrection.

  854. This is the very person,

  855. the very Jesus who died

  856. and was crucified on the cross

  857. and whose body was buried.

  858. And now He's saying to Thomas,

  859. These are the evidences

  860. of my death.

  861. The evidences now

  862. that I am risen from the dead

  863. because they are the marks

  864. of the death I died.

  865. Now reach out and touch them.

  866. And don't be disbelieving,

  867. but believe.

  868. It's a wonderful thing

  869. that God provides us

  870. with evidence

  871. in order that we should believe.

  872. Don't go by the ways

  873. of the world

  874. or the atheistic philosophies

  875. of the world

  876. that says,

  877. you know,

  878. you're telling us

  879. you believe in Jesus.

  880. You've never seen Jesus.

  881. How can you believe

  882. in somebody you've never seen?

  883. How can you speak to somebody

  884. and yet you've never seen Him

  885. with your own eyes?

  886. How can you trust in somebody

  887. and trust your life to somebody

  888. when you don't even know

  889. that He exists physically?

  890. You've never seen Him.

  891. Well, we do see Him.

  892. We do see the evidences

  893. because the Bible

  894. recreates them for us.

  895. And because the Bible

  896. is the Bible

  897. and the Bible

  898. is God's Word,

  899. as you read this passage

  900. and every other passage

  901. in the Word of God

  902. and every other passage

  903. that gives you

  904. such details as this,

  905. it's bringing you

  906. into that occasion

  907. and is placing you there

  908. as surely as if you had been

  909. physically there

  910. on the first occasion.

  911. And so you can see

  912. that tonight

  913. God is presenting you

  914. with the evidences

  915. because they are there

  916. written for you

  917. in His Word.

  918. And the evidences

  919. that are there

  920. are there for our believing

  921. so that we will reach out

  922. and touch the evidences

  923. if you like

  924. through receiving

  925. the testimony

  926. of the Word of God itself.

  927. God doesn't lie.

  928. Don't go along

  929. with the idea

  930. that the Bible

  931. is just far,

  932. far too old

  933. for you nowadays

  934. to believe in it

  935. when the world

  936. has moved on

  937. in such a long way

  938. so many ways

  939. from the days

  940. of the disciples.

  941. You know,

  942. when you come to ask,

  943. well,

  944. what does the Bible

  945. say about this?

  946. People say to you,

  947. what does the Bible

  948. have to say about this?

  949. What does the Bible

  950. have to say about that?

  951. And before you actually

  952. come to that question,

  953. there's another question

  954. that you need to ask

  955. before that.

  956. What is it?

  957. What is the Bible?

  958. Before you even ask,

  959. what does the Bible say?

  960. You have to begin

  961. by saying,

  962. what is the Bible?

  963. What's the nature

  964. of this book?

  965. Who's the author

  966. of this book?

  967. Who wrote it?

  968. Whose authority

  969. is behind it?

  970. Is it a reliable book?

  971. Is it a book

  972. you can trust in?

  973. What is the Bible?

  974. It is the Word of God.

  975. It is God's testimony

  976. to himself.

  977. Then you can ask,

  978. well,

  979. what does it say?

  980. And when you begin

  981. with what the Bible is,

  982. and then you go to

  983. what does it say,

  984. you're coming to a book

  985. then that's authoritative

  986. in what it says to you.

  987. And it remains authoritative.

  988. It remains a reliable book

  989. and always will be

  990. to the end of time.

  991. It is God's Word.

  992. It's God's revelation

  993. of himself.

  994. And I think in this day

  995. and generation

  996. that we belong to,

  997. that's where we have to begin

  998. our testimony to the world,

  999. not in what the Bible says

1000. so much as what the Bible is.

  1001. And why the Bible?

1002. Why we believe the Bible

1003. to be what it is.

1004. The world's not going to

  1005. accept that testimony

1006. without the blessing of God,

  1007. without hearts being open

  1008. to receive it,

1009. but you can't leave that

  1010. out of it.

  1011. Well, here is tonight

  1012. what we're looking at

  1013. in this passage.

1014. It is recreating it for us

1015. and the Bible is reliable

  1016. in doing that.

1017. And it's just as if

  1018. you are standing there

  1019. with the disciples

  1020. and with Thomas,

1021. with the Lord before you

1022. and the Lord speaking to you

1023. and the Lord addressing you

  1024. and taking you out

1025. from amongst the other disciples

  1026. and saying,

1027. this is what I have to say to you.

1028. And what did he say to him?

  1029. He said,

  1030. don't be disbelieving,

  1031. but believe.

  1032. Now, literally,

1033. in the language that's used

  1034. in the New Testament,

  1035. literally we could translate

  1036. that as stop disbelieving

  1037. and believe.

  1038. In other words,

  1039. Jesus was instructing Thomas,

  1040. commanding Thomas,

1041. to stop what he was doing,

  1042. which was disbelieving,

  1043. not accepting the truth

1044. of what he had been presented

  1045. with by the disciples.

  1046. Stop disbelieving

  1047. and believe.

  1048. He said to him,

  1049. you have the testimony,

  1050. you see my side,

  1051. you've touched my side,

  1052. you see the marks

  1053. of my suffering,

  1054. my death,

1055. the evidence of my resurrection,

  1056. I'm here myself.

  1057. Stop disbelieving.

1058. are you here tonight unsaved?

  1059. Are you here tonight

1060. and you've not yet accepted Christ?

  1061. Are you here tonight

  1062. and you're still lost,

  1063. as you were

1064. when you came into the world?

1065. Are you here tonight saying,

1066. if only I had more evidence?

1067. If only I had more to go on.

  1068. If only Jesus

  1069. were actually physically present

  1070. in front of me.

  1071. He is,

  1072. in a sense,

1073. in the words of the Bible.

1074. Because they're recreating for you

  1075. the very occasion

  1076. in which he spoke

  1077. these words to Thomas.

  1078. you have the evidences.

  1079. You have the evidence

  1080. of his resurrection.

  1081. The Bible

  1082. produces it for you.

1083. And if you haven't come

  1084. to believe,

  1085. to believe trustingly

  1086. and savingly in Christ,

  1087. he is gently

  1088. but firmly

  1089. saying to you tonight,

  1090. stop disbelieving.

  1091. Stop what you're doing.

  1092. The evidence is there.

1093. Why should you go on

  1094. disbelieving?

1095. Why should you go on

  1096. not trusting in me?

1097. Why should you not come

1098. to give yourself over to me?

  1099. To be your Savior?

1100. That's how he spoke to Thomas.

  1101. And for us,

1102. the evidence is all laid out

  1103. for us in Scripture,

  1104. as we've said.

  1105. And so here is

  1106. his wonderful instruction

1107. to us tonight as well.

  1108. And

  1109. he's not just speaking

1110. to people who have not

1111. yet come to trust in him

  1112. who are still unsaved.

  1113. He's speaking to you

  1114. and to me

  1115. as Christian believers.

1116. Because there are many times

  1117. in our life

  1118. when we're guilty

  1119. of disbelieving

  1120. or reluctantly

  1121. accepting his word.

1122. And he's saying to us as well,

  1123. stop disbelieving.

  1124. Trust me.

  1125. Trust in my word.

1126. Trust what I'm saying to you.

  1127. And move on.

1128. Don't stop where you are.

1129. Don't stop as if there's nothing else

1130. but just to stand there

  1131. questioning

  1132. and wondering.

  1133. Stop disbelieving

  1134. and believe.

  1135. And it's the same.

  1136. You're coming to have

  1137. another communion.

  1138. God willing,

  1139. next Lord's Day.

  1140. And as I've mentioned

  1141. many times

  1142. from this pulpit

  1143. and elsewhere,

1144. we find many people saying,

  1145. as I said myself

  1146. at one time,

1147. if only I had more evidence.

1148. If only I had more

  1149. to go on.

1150. If only I were living

  1151. back in the days

  1152. of the disciples,

1153. it'd be much easier for me.

1154. I could be much more

  1155. persuaded then

  1156. to come

  1157. and take my place

  1158. at the Lord's table.

  1159. It's not that I denounce him.

  1160. It's not that I don't believe

  1161. that he existed.

1162. It's not that I refuse his word

  1163. or anything like that.

  1164. But I just wish

  1165. there was something else.

1166. Well, what more do you want?

  1167. Don't you have him

  1168. speaking to you tonight

  1169. in the Bible?

1170. Is that not word of Christ

  1171. in the Bible

  1172. as sure

1173. as if he stood here

  1174. and you saw him

  1175. physically speaking to you

1176. as he was with these disciples?

  1177. If the Bible is,

1178. as we say it is,

  1179. the word of God,

1180. he is speaking to you

1181. and the word that he's

  1182. giving to you

1183. to come and take communion

1184. if you haven't done that before.

  1185. And I hope I'm presenting this

  1186. lovingly and not harshly.

  1187. But Jesus is saying,

1188. here is my word to you.

  1189. Do this

  1190. in remembrance of me.

  1191. Do it.

  1192. Stop being disbelieving

  1193. and believe.

  1194. Do it

  1195. on the basis

  1196. of the truth

  1197. of my word.

  1198. So Christ knew him

  1199. and Christ commanded

1200. and the time is gone.

  1201. But we're going to

  1202. just briefly look at

  1203. Thomas' confession of Christ.

  1204. My Lord

  1205. and my God

  1206. was his response.

  1207. Where you find

  1208. the deity of Christ

  1209. so clearly set out

  1210. and it's the clearest

  1211. as we said

1212. really in the New Testament.

  1213. The lordship

  1214. that's confessed

  1215. there by Thomas

  1216. is a lordship

  1217. using these two words

  1218. my Lord

  1219. and my God.

  1220. Words that express

  1221. the way in which

  1222. God is

  1223. God,

  1224. the creator,

  1225. the sustainer

  1226. of the whole universe

  1227. but also the Lord,

  1228. the covenant Lord

  1229. of his people.

  1230. My Lord

  1231. and my God.

  1232. It is the complete

  1233. absolute lordship

  1234. lordship of Christ.

  1235. And how thankful

1236. you and I should be

  1237. for that tonight.

  1238. That our saviour

  1239. is the master

  1240. of the whole universe.

  1241. That our saviour

  1242. is the Lord,

1243. the God of his people,

1244. the Lord of his people.

  1245. What does that mean?

  1246. It means

1247. that there's no one else

  1248. that can look after

  1249. your life

  1250. the way he does.

  1251. And that's

  1252. for example

  1253. how Samuel Rutherford

1254. put it at one time

  1255. one of Scotland's

  1256. greatest theologians.

  1257. When he was answering

1258. in so many of his letters

  1259. the ways in which

  1260. people were asking

  1261. for advice

  1262. and so on

  1263. and confounded

  1264. sometimes

  1265. by what was happening

  1266. in the country.

  1267. He said

  1268. my faith

  1269. has no other bed

  1270. to rest upon

  1271. than omnipotence.

  1272. God the almighty,

  1273. the power,

  1274. the authority of God.

  1275. my faith

  1276. has no other bed

  1277. to rest upon

  1278. than omnipotence.

  1279. And isn't that

  1280. how it is

1281. for you and I tonight?

  1282. Where is your faith

  1283. going to rest?

  1284. In omnipotence.

  1285. In the mastery

  1286. of Christ.

  1287. In the lordship

  1288. of Christ.

  1289. In the person

  1290. of Jesus

  1291. as Lord

  1292. and God.

  1293. and

  1294. you see

  1295. how personal

  1296. this is as well

  1297. to Thomas.

  1298. My lord

  1299. and my God.

  1300. It's personal

  1301. because

  1302. this Jesus

  1303. belongs

  1304. to Thomas

  1305. through the faith

  1306. that Thomas

  1307. is placing in him

  1308. and has placed

  1309. in him before now

  1310. but is now

  1311. being once again

  1312. registering with him

  1313. as a believer

  1314. where he says

  1315. my lord

  1316. and my God.

  1317. that possessive

  1318. pronoun

  1319. is so important.

  1320. My lord

  1321. and my God.

  1322. And how important

  1323. that is

  1324. for you

  1325. as well

  1326. as for me

  1327. tonight.

  1328. It's not just

  1329. that we believe

  1330. in the lordship

  1331. of Christ

  1332. in a general sense.

  1333. It's not just

  1334. that we believe

  1335. that Jesus

  1336. is lord

  1337. over the whole

  1338. universe

  1339. because that's

  1340. what the bible

  1341. says.

  1342. That's going

  1343. quite far

  1344. in the extent

  1345. of what you believe.

  1346. but it's further

  1347. and it's more

  1348. precious to say

  1349. my lord

  1350. and my God.

  1351. Can you say

  1352. that tonight?

  1353. Is he your lord?

  1354. Is he your god?

  1355. Does he belong

  1356. to you

  1357. as god

  1358. and lord

  1359. in your life?

  1360. Can you use

  1361. this expression

  1362. meaningfully

  1363. tonight of him?

  1364. My lord

  1365. and my God.

  1366. How precious

  1367. that is

  1368. that we can

  1369. see

  1370. of this

  1371. great

  1372. gigantic

  1373. enormous

  1374. authoritative

  1375. omniscient

  1376. all knowing

  1377. all powerful

  1378. God

  1379. lord

  1380. tonight

  1381. I'm thankful

  1382. I can say

  1383. you are

  1384. my god

  1385. you are

  1386. my lord

  1387. I possess

  1388. you by

  1389. faith

  1390. I've availed

  1391. myself of all

  1392. that is in you

  1393. and brought it

  1394. home to myself

  1395. it belongs

  1396. to me

  1397. as the song

  1398. of Solomon

  1399. puts it

  1400. where the

  1401. expression is

  1402. so often used

  1403. or was used

  1404. certainly in the

  1405. past

  1406. my beloved

  1407. is mine

  1408. and I

  1409. am his

  1410. and every

  1411. believer

  1412. tonight

  1413. can say

  1414. that

  1415. my beloved

  1416. is mine

  1417. Jesus

  1418. belongs

  1419. to me

  1420. and I

  1421. am his

  1422. I belong

  1423. to him

  1424. and

  1425. the passage

  1426. ends by

  1427. Thomas saying

  1428. my lord

  1429. my god

  1430. Jesus said

  1431. have you

  1432. believed

  1433. because you

  1434. have seen

  1435. me

  1436. blessed

  1437. are those

  1438. who have

  1439. not seen

  1440. and yet

  1441. believed

  1442. who are

  1443. they

  1444. who are

  1445. these people

  1446. Jesus refers

  1447. to as

  1448. those who

  1449. have not

  1450. seen

  1451. and yet

  1452. have believed

  1453. and so

  1454. are blessed

  1455. well they

  1456. are

  1457. everybody

  1458. who's

  1459. come to

  1460. believe

  1461. and trust

  1462. in him

  1463. from the

  1464. time that

  1465. he went

  1466. back to

  1467. heaven

  1468. to this

  1469. present

  1470. day

  1471. blessed

  1472. are those

  1473. who have

  1474. not seen

  1475. who have

  1476. not laid

  1477. physical

  1478. eyes

  1479. upon

  1480. Christ

  1481. but yet

  1482. believe

  1483. and Jesus

  1484. says

  1485. blessed

  1486. are they

  1487. they're

  1488. blessed

  1489. because

  1490. they've

  1491. come

  1492. to

  1493. trust

  1494. in me

  1495. they've

  1496. never

  1497. seen

  1498. me

  1499. physically

  1500. but they

  1501. know me

  1502. and I

  1503. know them

  1504. they are

  1505. my sheep

  1506. I am

  1507. their shepherd

  1508. and there's

  1509. a sense

  1510. in which

  1511. that's being

  1512. recreated

  1513. now here

  1514. in this

  1515. building

  1516. tonight

  1517. where

  1518. through

  1519. the gospel

  1520. Jesus

  1521. is addressing

  1522. us of

  1523. our need

  1524. to trust

  1525. in him

  1526. and

  1527. emphasizing

  1528. his own

  1529. qualities

  1530. for us

  1531. to do

  1532. that

  1533. and where

  1534. we are

  1535. here

  1536. in this

  1537. room

  1538. with

  1539. Thomas

  1540. as this

  1541. scene is

  1542. created

  1543. for us

  1544. the risen

  1545. Jesus

  1546. is standing

  1547. before us

  1548. in the words

  1549. of scripture

  1550. he's real

  1551. what is

  1552. our response

  1553. are you

  1554. tonight

  1555. saying

  1556. my

  1557. Lord

  1558. and my

  1559. God

  1560. let's

  1561. pray

  1562. Lord our

  1563. God

  1564. we give

  1565. thanks for

  1566. the gospel

  1567. and we give

  1568. thanks for

  1569. the gospel

  1570. and its

  1571. contents

  1572. and we

  1573. thank you

  1574. for especially

  1575. the way

  1576. it provides

  1577. us

  1578. with these

  1579. wonderful

  1580. truths

  1581. about

  1582. yourself

  1583. about

  1584. your

  1585. relationship

  1586. with your

  1587. people

  1588. the privileges

  1589. that they

  1590. have

  1591. the blessing

  1592. that is

  1593. theirs

  1594. even now

  1595. and the

  1596. blessings

  1597. that are

  1598. laid up

  1599. in store

  1600. for them

  1601. in the

  1602. heaven

  1603. that is

  1604. awaiting

  1605. them

  1606. we thank

  1607. you Lord

  1608. tonight

  1609. for all

  1610. that that

  1611. means

  1612. to your

  1613. people

  1614. we pray

  1615. for everyone

  1616. in this

  1617. building

  1618. tonight

  1619. oh Lord

  1620. you know

  1621. every heart

  1622. here

  1623. you know

  1624. the thoughts

  1625. of every

  1626. soul

  1627. you know

  1628. our relationship

  1629. with you

  1630. you know

  1631. our need

  1632. and we pray

  1633. that each of us

  1634. may come to

  1635. leave this place

  1636. tonight

  1637. trusting in the

  1638. Lord and

  1639. thankful

  1640. for the trust

  1641. that you have

  1642. given us

  1643. receive us

  1644. in our worship

  1645. cleanse us

  1646. from our sin

  1647. for Jesus

  1648. sake

  1649. Amen

  1650. our closing

  1651. psalm tonight

  1652. is psalm

  1653. 145

  1654. the second

  1655. version of

  1656. psalm 145

  1657. page

  1658. 444

  1659. we'll sing

  1660. verses 1

  1661. to 6

  1662. O Lord

  1663. thou art

  1664. my God

  1665. and King

  1666. thee will

  1667. I magnify

  1668. and praise

  1669. I will

  1670. they bless

  1671. and gladly

  1672. sing

  1673. unto

  1674. thy holy

  1675. name

  1676. always

  1677. psalm 145

  1678. on page

  1679. 444

  1680. and these

  1681. verses 1

  1682. to 6

  1683. O Lord

  1684. thou art

  1685. my God

  1686. and King

  1687. O Lord

  1688. thou art

  1689. my God

  1690. and King

  1691. they will

  1692. magnify

  1693. and praise

  1694. who have

  1695. !

  1696. !

  1697. !

1698. Each day I rise, I will be blessed, and praise thy name, thy will come, dare to be praised, and great for this.

1699. His greatness, dark and complete end.

1700. Great shall thy words face unto race, the mighty act sure done by thee.

1701. I will speak of thy glorious grace, and honor of thy majesty.

1702. Thy wondrous works I will report, I let the light shall be extol.

1703. Of all thy dreadful acts, O Lord, and I thy greatness will unfold.

1704. If you could kindly let me get to the main door, please, after the benediction.

1705. Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you now and evermore.

  1706. Amen.

  1707. Amen.
