  1. We can turn back to our reading in Leviticus chapter 2.

    Leviticus 2 chapter mention

  2. We can read at the beginning of this chapter again, Leviticus chapter 2.

    Leviticus 2 chapter mention

  3. When anyone brings a grain offering as an offering to the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour.

  4. He shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it and bring it to Aaron's sons, the priests.

  5. And he shall take from it a handful of the fine flour and oil with all of its frankincense.

  6. And the priest shall burn this as its memorial portion on the altar, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

  7. And so on.

  8. When you read in the New Testament in 2 Timothy, there's a verse that reminds us that all Scripture is God-breathed.

  9. God has given all of his word to us.

  10. And he gives it to us for a purpose.

  11. Reminds us in that passage in Timothy as well that it's for our good, for our upbuilding, for all of these things that we seek to find as we turn.

  12. To God's word.

  13. But there are certain passages and maybe books of the Bible that we don't tend to go to as much.

  14. And yet they're still God-breathed.

  15. They're given for a purpose, for our good, for our instruction.

  16. Which book in the Bible do you find God speaking directly in most?

  17. Which book in the Bible is made up, in the sense of the majority of the book, is made up of God speaking directly?

  18. Well, it's this book of Leviticus.

  19. It's a book where you see God speaking directly almost all the way through it.

  20. You see it from the very beginning in chapter 1.

  21. The first verse says,

  22. And so God is speaking directly throughout this book for much of it.

  23. And that says something to us, that this book is important.

  24. This book has a lot to say to us.

  25. And the very fact that you see it often quoted in the New Testament is a reminder to us of just how important it is as well.

  26. We'll touch on that a little bit more tomorrow.

  27. But when you start, if you've ever tried starting at the beginning of the Bible, the book of Genesis,

  28. and you say to yourself, I'm going to read all the way through the Bible.

  29. Starting from the Genesis, I'm going to read all the way through.

  30. How far do you get?

  31. How many of you have tried that, starting to read the Bible?

  32. You come to Leviticus, and it's probably the place where most people suddenly find themselves,

  33. not losing interest, but finding it just hard to read through.

  34. And very often that's the place where people will give up in that sense of reading all the way through the Bible.

  35. Leviticus can be a difficult read in that sense.

  36. What is it saying to us?

  37. But it has much to say to us.

  38. And even as we think of preparing ourselves to remember the Lord's death,

  39. God willing tomorrow in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper,

  40. we look at this chapter this evening, and God willing tomorrow,

  41. we'll look at chapter 16 of this book as well.

  42. And we see that it has much to say to us about worship.

  43. It has much to say to us about sacrifice, about offering,

  44. and what God has done for us.

  45. And God is speaking to us through his word here.

  46. And the first chapters, first five or six or seven chapters in Leviticus,

  47. outline for us a sense of worship and offering to God.

  48. And there's five main offerings that you find in these opening chapters.

  49. You have the burnt offering, you have the grain offering,

  50. the peace offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering.

  51. There's five different offerings that we see in this book.

  52. And we're going to look at the second one this evening, this grain offering.

  53. Reading through chapter 2, it can sound a little like a cookery class.

  54. This is how you are to prepare this grain offering and offer it up to the Lord.

  55. It just seems to be repeating itself in different ways,

  56. saying this is the way that you are to cook your grain with oil and with frankincense,

  57. and how it's to be offered up and how it's to be given to the priests

  58. and how they are to eat it.

  59. And what is it actually saying to us?

  60. What lessons can we take from it?

  61. Well, the main application is not that the minister is to be kept in a good supply

  62. of pancakes or scones or oat cakes.

  63. That's not what it's saying.

  64. You could take that sense from it,

  65. where the priests have to be given an element of what is cooked,

  66. that they are to eat that.

  67. This is their supply, as it were.

  68. But that's not the main thing that we're taking from it at all.

  69. It's much more important than that.

  70. There's much more to it than that.

  71. Because what it's actually saying to us,

  72. as you see it with all the other offerings that come alongside it,

  73. is that this is an important aspect of the people's worship,

  74. of their worship towards God.

  75. It's part of their lifestyle.

  76. It forms part of their community,

  77. that everybody is involved in this,

  78. no matter how little or how much grain that you have,

  79. that you have something to give to the Lord,

  80. that you have some way of approaching the Lord.

  81. Because this is a sacrifice of worship,

  82. an offering to God with a sweet aroma you find.

  83. So as you look at it, the grain,

  84. the ingredients are given to us,

  85. the grain, the oil, and the frankincense.

  86. The grain is the offering.

  87. The oil is there, as is often seen throughout Scripture.

  88. Oil is making it set apart as holy to God.

  89. And frankincense is what gives it that aroma,

  90. that richness as it is baked,

  91. as it is cooked on the altar.

  92. So all these things come together.

  93. And in that sense, it's that aspect of

  94. offering up a full worship to God,

  95. that we are offering our best to God.

  96. And there's four things that I want us to take

  97. from this grain offering this evening,

  98. as we see it in chapter 2.

  99. Four aspects of worship that we can take from this,

  100. that we can use to help ourselves

  101. prepare for the Lord's Supper tomorrow.

  102. To remember what we are doing,

  103. to look at it as our relationship with God,

  104. that we are preparing ourselves to worship Him aright.

  105. That we have all that we have through the Lord Jesus Christ,

  106. as we come to partake in the Lord's Supper.

  107. Are we worshiping God aright?

  108. Are we coming, offering that sweet worship,

  109. that sweet aroma to God this evening,

  110. in our lives in general,

  111. and as we come tomorrow?

  112. Is our worship of God what it should be?

  113. And how we see the Lord Jesus Christ come

  114. from these verses before us this evening as well.

  115. So the first thing we want to see about our worship

  116. is about the sense of remembrance.

  117. It's about remembering.

  118. The opening verses tell us this,

  119. as they're giving them instruction

  120. about what is involved in this grain offering.

  121. And you see in verse 2 that it speaks about

  122. a memorial portion.

  123. A memorial portion.

  124. It is offered as a burnt offering,

  125. with an aroma pleasing to God,

  126. as a memorial portion.

  127. And so what is that saying to us?

  128. Well, it's saying that there's a recognition

  129. of what God has done.

  130. It's a memorial, a remembrance portion.

  131. Now, it could be applied that there's a remembrance

  132. and a thanksgiving for a harvest,

  133. but it's much wider than that.

  134. It's not just focusing in on one area.

  135. It's focusing in on the people's lives in general.

  136. That they have a lot and much to give thanks

  137. to God for every practical aspect of their lives.

  138. Not just a spiritual side,

  139. but the practical side as well.

  140. That we have a memorial offering,

  141. a remembrance offering to give to God

  142. in our worship.

  143. You remember that the people here,

  144. as we're looking at Leviticus,

  145. were with Moses as their leader.

  146. They were in the wilderness.

  147. They were journeying in the wilderness.

  148. A place that was barren,

  149. a place that was sparse,

  150. and yet they had so much to be thankful for

  151. as they journeyed with God,

  152. as God provided for them.

  153. And so this regular grain offering,

  154. as the other offerings they all were,

  155. they were on a regular basis.

  156. Tomorrow we're going to focus

  157. on the Day of Atonement,

  158. that once-in-a-year sacrifice.

  159. But these other offerings,

  160. as we're looking at here,

  161. they were ongoing.

  162. So there was this continual remembrance

  163. of what God has done.

  164. And at the heart of remembrance

  165. is worship.

  166. And that's what this is about.

  167. The grain offering is about worship.

  168. About this sweet aroma

  169. being offered up to God.

  170. When you look back in the Scriptures,

  171. you go to the book of Genesis.

  172. Noah was saved by God during the flood.

  173. What was the first thing that he did

  174. as he came out of the ark?

  175. Well, he offered a sacrifice to God.

  176. He offered worship to God.

  177. In Genesis 8, 21, it says,

  178. When the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma,

  179. the Lord said in his heart,

  180. I will never again curse the ground

  181. because of man.

  182. Noah offered up a sacrifice.

  183. And the aroma was pleasing to the Lord.

  184. And he gave that great promise.

  185. I will never again curse the ground

  186. because of man.

  187. What we find is that

  188. as we draw near to God

  189. in this remembrance,

  190. in this memorial,

  191. in this offering,

  192. a sweet fragrance

  193. of worship to God

  194. that he blesses,

  195. that he is able to bless

  196. as our focus is on him.

  197. And so this grain offering

  198. that seems maybe

  199. so simple in many ways,

  200. it maybe seems a little

  201. out of place here.

  202. We could have focused

  203. on other offerings,

  204. the burnt offering,

  205. the sin offering

  206. that would seem in many ways

  207. more important

  208. because they remind us

  209. of that sense of forgiveness.

  210. But forgiveness is part of this

  211. because the memorial portion,

  212. the remembrance of God

  213. is remembering deliverance,

  214. remembering God's blessings,

  215. remembering God's goodness.

  216. goodness.

  217. And so they offer up

  218. this remembrance offering.

  219. And when we look at ourselves tonight,

  220. when you look at your life,

  221. when you look at what God

  222. has done for you,

  223. do you see the goodness

  224. of God tonight?

  225. We can come to the Lord's Supper

  226. and we can think

  227. it's our sins

  228. that we are focusing on,

  229. our sins that are many

  230. as we look at them

  231. and we look at them

  232. and we know them.

  233. And we thank God

  234. for the forgiveness

  235. of our sin.

  236. But we look too

  237. about the goodness

  238. of God,

  239. the marshes of God,

  240. the way God

  241. has been with us

  242. since we last sat

  243. at the Lord's table

  244. and give thanks

  245. and remember

  246. God's goodness.

  247. Frederick Marsh,

  248. a Christian writer,

  249. he once looked at it

  250. in this way,

  251. what the Christian sees

  252. when he looks back

  253. and can give thanks for,

  254. the deliverance

  255. of the Lord

  256. that he has brought,

  257. the way

  258. the Lord

  259. has led,

  260. the blessings

  261. the Lord

  262. has given,

  263. the victories

  264. the Lord

  265. has won,

  266. the encouragements

  267. the Lord

  268. has given.

  269. You know,

  270. as you look back

  271. in your life tonight,

  272. whether it's short term

  273. or longer term,

  274. looking back

  275. over your life,

  276. do you not have much

  277. to give thanks

  278. to God for

  279. and to offer up

  280. a remembrance

  281. offering

  282. to God,

  283. to remember

  284. what he has done.

  285. How do we remember

  286. the Lord?

  287. Well,

  288. that is what we are

  289. to do

  290. this weekend.

  291. What we are doing

  292. is to come

  293. and partake

  294. in what the Lord

  295. has done

  296. for us,

  297. to give

  298. a worship

  299. that has a rich

  300. aroma of thanksgiving

  301. to God

  302. for the sacrifice

  303. that he has made

  304. for us,

  305. that he gave

  306. his life.

  307. And that as we sang

  308. in Psalm 116,

  309. what can we do?

  310. What can we give

  311. to the Lord

  312. for all of his goodness

  313. to us?

  314. The Psalm says,

  315. what shall I render

  316. to the Lord

  317. for all his benefits

  318. to me?

  319. I will lift

  320. up the cup

  321. of salvation

  322. and call

  323. on the name

  324. of the Lord.

  325. That is worship.

  326. That is a worship

  327. that has a sweet

  328. aroma

  329. because it is

  330. giving thanks

  331. to God,

  332. remembering God

  333. for all that

  334. he has done

  335. because Jesus

  336. said,

  337. do this

  338. in remembrance

  339. of me.

  340. so our worship

  341. is to be

  342. one

  343. of remembrance.

  344. The second thing

  345. we see here

  346. is it's a worship

  347. of giving,

  348. of giving

  349. to the Lord.

  350. They are bringing

  351. their grain offering

  352. to the Lord

  353. in its various

  354. formats.

  355. And as you read

  356. through the different

  357. ways that it is given,

  358. it's a reminder

  359. that everybody

  360. in this community

  361. is involved.

  362. involved.

  363. There may be

  364. some that are

  365. giving maybe

  366. a more expensive

  367. grain,

  368. a finer grain,

  369. a different kind

  370. of way of it

  371. being prepared,

  372. but each

  373. and every one

  374. is being offered

  375. as a sense

  376. of giving

  377. to the Lord.

  378. It's acknowledging

  379. God's goodness

  380. and the people

  381. remembering this

  382. by giving

  383. to him.

  384. And as they

  385. do this,

  386. they do it

  387. by bringing it

  388. as a gift.

  389. That is what

  390. these offerings

  391. are,

  392. a tribute,

  393. a portion

  394. of the goodness

  395. of God

  396. giving back

  397. to him.

  398. So when you look

  399. at these offerings

  400. in the beginning

  401. of Leviticus,

  402. what would the people

  403. have understood

  404. by it?

  405. Well,

  406. they would have

  407. understood that

  408. all that they have

  409. is from God.

  410. Everything that

  411. they have,

  412. whether it's

  413. their cattle,

  414. their sheep,

  415. their goats,

  416. their birds,

  417. their grain,

  418. everything that

  419. they have

  420. is from God.

  421. And what they

  422. are doing

  423. is giving back

  424. to God

  425. what is his,

  426. of giving

  427. themselves

  428. to the Lord.

  429. And so what

  430. this grain offering

  431. was,

  432. was a sense

  433. of dedication,

  434. a sense of

  435. pledging

  436. themselves

  437. once again

  438. to God,

  439. ongoing sacrifice

  440. in that way.

  441. They showed

  442. their commitment

  443. to God.

  444. And as we

  445. come to take

  446. part in the

  447. Lord's Supper,

  448. that is what

  449. we are doing

  450. as well.

  451. We are reminding

  452. ourselves that

  453. everything that we

  454. have is from

  455. God.

  456. And that we are

  457. giving back to

  458. him the glory,

  459. the worship

  460. that is due.

  461. Everything that we

  462. have,

  463. if we have

  464. salvation,

  465. salvation,

  466. it is all

  467. because of

  468. him.

  469. Not because of

  470. anything that

  471. we have done,

  472. it's all

  473. because of

  474. him.

  475. We come

  476. not offering

  477. ourselves to

  478. him,

  479. we come

  480. offering

  481. ourselves

  482. to him.

  483. Offering

  484. ourselves in

  485. that sense

  486. of we are

  487. dependent

  488. on him.

  489. And so

  490. here you're

  491. seeing that

  492. is the sense

  493. of giving

  494. to God

  495. what is

  496. already

  497. his.

  498. And there

  499. was a cost

  500. in this

  501. giving.

  502. Anytime that

  503. we see a

  504. sacrifice being

  505. offered,

  506. it is because

  507. there is a

  508. cost.

  509. They are giving

  510. part of what

  511. they could easily

  512. say, well,

  513. it's mine.

  514. I don't have

  515. to give it.

  516. But anything

  517. that we have

  518. and we see

  519. from God,

  520. it is his

  521. and is about

  522. giving back

  523. to him.

  524. And so

  525. we come

  526. to give

  527. to him

  528. because he

  529. has given

  530. to us.

  531. He has

  532. given us

  533. his son.

  534. He has

  535. given us

  536. salvation.

  537. He has

  538. given us

  539. forgiveness.

  540. Whatever way

  541. you're looking

  542. at it,

  543. it is God

  544. who has

  545. done and

  546. we are

  547. to give.

  548. And when

  549. they do

  550. this,

  551. they offer

  552. up their

  553. best.

  554. You see

  555. it here,

  556. for example,

  557. in verse 14,

  558. if you

  559. offer a

  560. grain offering

  561. of the

  562. first fruits

  563. to the

  564. Lord,

  565. the first

  566. fruits were

  567. always the

  568. best.

  569. You can

  570. easily say,

  571. well,

  572. we'll leave

  573. it till the

  574. second or

  575. the third

  576. harvest,

  577. the ones

  578. that maybe

  579. aren't as

  580. important.

  581. You see it

  582. again and

  583. again through

  584. Scripture where

  585. there is a

  586. lack of

  587. worship,

  588. a lack of

  589. relationship

  590. that is

  591. right with

  592. God.

  593. It is not

  594. the giving

  595. of the

  596. best,

  597. but the

  598. giving of

  599. the second.

  600. In Malachi,

  601. in these

  602. later books

  603. in the

  604. Old Testament,

  605. you see how

  606. they give

  607. lame animals

  608. and all of

  609. these kinds

  610. of things.

  611. They are

  612. holding back

  613. from God.

  614. Instead of

  615. giving,

  616. they are

  617. keeping.

  618. And if

  619. you are

  620. doing that,

  621. you are

  622. robbing God.

  623. That is what

  624. Malachi says

  625. in chapter 3,

  626. verse 8.

  627. Will man

  628. rob God?

  629. Yet you are

  630. robbing me.

  631. But you

  632. say,

  633. how have

  634. I robbed

  635. you?

  636. In your

  637. tithes and

  638. your

  639. contributions.

  640. They were

  641. holding back

  642. from God.

  643. They weren't

  644. giving as

  645. they should.

  646. Are you

  647. holding back

  648. from God

  649. tonight?

  650. Are you

  651. keeping back

  652. from God

  653. what is due

  654. to Him?

  655. In that

  656. sense of

  657. your worship,

  658. your best,

  659. your service,

  660. your life,

  661. everything that

  662. you have from

  663. Him?

  664. Are you

  665. giving back

  666. to Him

  667. with that

  668. sense of

  669. thanksgiving,

  670. that sense

  671. of rejoicing,

  672. that sense

  673. of adoration

  674. that is due

  675. to Him?

  676. We are to

  677. be givers,

  678. not keepers.

  679. We are to

  680. give ourselves

  681. fully to

  682. the Lord,

  683. to commit

  684. our ways

  685. to the

  686. Lord,

  687. not to

  688. hold back

  689. from Him.

  690. Holding

  691. back,

  692. what is

  693. due to

  694. Him is

  695. robbing

  696. God.

  697. It is

  698. disobedience.

  699. And so

  700. are you

  701. coming to

  702. give Him

  703. what He

  704. deserves?

  705. Your love,

  706. your life,

  707. your all.

  708. That is

  709. how we are

  710. to come

  711. to the

  712. Lord's

  713. table,

  714. giving to

  715. Him

  716. what is

  717. due.

  718. in

  719. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  720. chapter 9,

  721. Paul speaks

  722. about that

  723. cheerful

  724. giver.

  725. It is

  726. spoken about

  727. maybe in a

  728. financial way,

  729. but everything

  730. that we do,

  731. every act

  732. of worship

  733. is to be

  734. given in a

  735. cheerful way.

  736. Each one

  737. must give

  738. as he has

  739. decided in

  740. his heart,

  741. not reluctantly

  742. or under

  743. compulsion,

  744. for God

  745. loves a

  746. cheerful

  747. giver.

  748. a

  749. hilarious

  750. giver

  751. is the

  752. word that

  753. is used

  754. for cheerful.

  755. It is

  756. that sense

  757. of just

  758. there is

  759. joy,

  760. there is

  761. delight.

  762. When you

  763. look at

  764. that sense

  765. of frankincense

  766. that was

  767. offered up

  768. here,

  769. that aroma,

  770. it made

  771. it sweet.

  772. And that

  773. is what our

  774. giving is

  775. to be like,

  776. a sweet

  777. giving to

  778. the Lord,

  779. a thanksgiving

  780. giving to

  781. the Lord.

  782. The third

  783. thing that we

  784. see here

  785. in this

  786. offering is

  787. that it's

  788. preserving.

  789. It's

  790. preserving.

  791. In

  792. verse 13

  793. we read

  794. these words,

  795. you shall

  796. season all

  797. your grain

  798. offerings with

  799. salt.

  800. You shall

  801. not let

  802. the salt

  803. of the

  804. covenant

  805. with your

  806. God be

  807. missing

  808. from your

  809. grain

  810. offering.

  811. With all

  812. your offerings

  813. you shall

  814. offer salt.

  815. So it's

  816. not just

  817. an ingredient

  818. of salt,

  819. there is

  820. something

  821. more to

  822. this.

  823. It's

  824. the salt

  825. of the

  826. covenant

  827. with your

  828. God.

  829. That is

  830. not to

  831. be missing.

  832. Salt

  833. is of

  834. course a

  835. preservative.

  836. It is

  837. what gives

  838. longevity

  839. to food.

  840. And the

  841. people here

  842. in Moses'

  843. day would

  844. have been

  845. quite familiar

  846. with that,

  847. that salt

  848. was able

  849. to keep,

  850. but only

  851. for a

  852. time.

  853. time.

  854. But what

  855. we see

  856. here is

  857. that behind

  858. this offering

  859. and all

  860. the offerings

  861. you could

  862. see,

  863. is behind

  864. it all

  865. is that

  866. sense of

  867. covenant

  868. pledge

  869. with God.

  870. That he

  871. is the

  872. one who

  873. provides.

  874. That he

  875. is the

  876. one who

  877. preserves

  878. his covenant

  879. with his

  880. people.

  881. Because we

  882. break it.

  883. We fail

  884. in it

  885. again and

  886. again.

  887. And that's

  888. the whole

  889. reason as

  890. you're looking

  891. through Leviticus

  892. and indeed

  893. the Old

  894. Testament,

  895. when you're

  896. seeing the

  897. whole offerings

  898. and sacrificial

  899. system,

  900. it's happening

  901. all the

  902. time.

  903. It's

  904. ongoing

  905. every day.

  906. It's just a

  907. part of their

  908. everyday life.

  909. Because there's

  910. never a point

  911. where they can

  912. say,

  913. we've made

  914. it.

  915. We've

  916. achieved it.

  917. We've

  918. pleased God.

  919. Because they

  920. are constantly

  921. failing God.

  922. Just as we

  923. are, just as

  924. you are, just

  925. as I am, we

  926. are constantly

  927. failing God.

  928. We sin in

  929. thought, word

  930. and deed on

  931. a daily

  932. basis.

  933. So we don't

  934. just confess

  935. our sins

  936. once.

  937. We have to

  938. confess our

  939. sin on a

  940. daily basis.

  941. But we are

  942. being reminded

  943. here that as

  944. they are bringing

  945. their grain

  946. offering,

  947. that behind

  948. it all is

  949. that sense

  950. of relationship,

  951. that covenant

  952. with God.

  953. The salt

  954. of the

  955. covenant

  956. with your

  957. God is

  958. not to

  959. be missing.

  960. There is

  961. this

  962. preserving.

  963. And that is

  964. what we have

  965. ongoing as we

  966. look to the

  967. Lord's

  968. Supper as

  969. well.

  970. We take

  971. it, we do

  972. it in remembrance

  973. of Him and we

  974. keep doing it

  975. until He

  976. come.

  977. Do this in

  978. remembrance of

  979. me until I

  980. come.

  981. It is

  982. preserved for

  983. us.

  984. It's that

  985. relationship,

  986. that covenant

  987. relationship with

  988. God.

  989. And when you

  990. look forward

  991. into the New

  992. Testament and

  993. when you see

  994. Jesus preparing

  995. to go to the

  996. cross and as

  997. He comes to

  998. institute the

  999. Lord's

  1000. Supper, when

  1001. you look at

  1002. that, what

  1003. is He doing?

  1004. He gives

  1005. bread and

  1006. He gives

  1007. wine.

  1008. There is

  1009. grain involved

  1010. in that.

  1011. Bread is

  1012. part of what

  1013. we take,

  1014. God willing,

  1015. tomorrow.

  1016. We are

  1017. seeing that

  1018. He is the

  1019. fulfillment of

  1020. this grain

  1021. offering, that

  1022. He is the

  1023. fulfillment of

  1024. this covenant,

  1025. that He is the

  1026. one who keeps

  1027. His people.

  1028. He is the

  1029. one who gives

  1030. that ultimate

  1031. sacrifice.

  1032. We know that

  1033. without the

  1034. shedding of

  1035. blood, there

  1036. is no

  1037. forgiveness of

  1038. sin.

  1039. But our

  1040. whole life is

  1041. dependent on

  1042. God and

  1043. God, on

  1044. Christ, and

  1045. Christ gave

  1046. His body and

  1047. His blood for

  1048. His people,

  1049. that we might

  1050. have life

  1051. through Him.

  1052. He gives

  1053. every provision

  1054. for us.

  1055. He preserves

  1056. His people.

  1057. He keeps

  1058. His people

  1059. because He is

  1060. in that

  1061. relationship

  1062. with His

  1063. people, a

  1064. covenant that

  1065. He will not

  1066. break.

  1067. And so as we

  1068. come tomorrow,

  1069. God willing,

  1070. to remember,

  1071. it is because

  1072. it is preserved

  1073. for us.

  1074. God willing, a

  1075. God willing, a

  1076. covenant that

  1077. is ongoing.

  1078. Do this in

  1079. remembrance of

  1080. me.

  1081. me.

  1082. The fourth and

  1083. final thing we

  1084. see here is

  1085. the assurance

  1086. that it

  1087. gives.

  1088. As the

  1089. people brought

  1090. their offerings,

  1091. what were they

  1092. looking for?

  1093. they were looking

  1094. to please God.

  1095. They were

  1096. looking for

  1097. their offering,

  1098. their sacrifice

  1099. to be

  1100. acceptable to

  1101. God.

  1102. Through the

  1103. priest, they

  1104. would bring it

  1105. and offer it

  1106. up to God.

  1107. And God

  1108. would bless it

  1109. if it was

  1110. brought right.

  1111. But if they

  1112. didn't bring the

  1113. best,

  1114. if they didn't

  1115. bring it all,

  1116. if they brought

  1117. it in the

  1118. wrong spirit,

  1119. with the

  1120. wrong attitude,

  1121. then God

  1122. was not able

  1123. to bless.

  1124. But what they

  1125. are looking for

  1126. here is bringing

  1127. that best of

  1128. what they have,

  1129. that God

  1130. would bless it

  1131. and give them

  1132. that assurance

  1133. that he is

  1134. with them,

  1135. that he will

  1136. not leave

  1137. them,

  1138. that he will

  1139. not turn his

  1140. back away

  1141. from them.

  1142. And so what

  1143. you see here

  1144. is they are

  1145. bringing this

  1146. offering,

  1147. they are

  1148. bringing it

  1149. to the

  1150. priests,

  1151. the priests

  1152. are then

  1153. offering it

  1154. up to

  1155. the Lord.

  1156. And how

  1157. do we

  1158. come in

  1159. worship?

  1160. What are

  1161. we looking

  1162. for as

  1163. we come

  1164. in worship,

  1165. as we

  1166. offer up

  1167. a right

  1168. worship to

  1169. God?

  1170. What are

  1171. we looking

  1172. for?

  1173. What are

  1174. we looking

  1175. for in

  1176. the Lord's

  1177. Supper?

  1178. What are

  1179. you looking

  1180. for in

  1181. that tomorrow?

  1182. that sense

  1183. of assurance,

  1184. that sense

  1185. of peace,

  1186. that sense

  1187. of being

  1188. accepted

  1189. by God.

  1190. And how

  1191. do we

  1192. find that?

  1193. Well, it

  1194. is coming

  1195. through our

  1196. priest,

  1197. who is the

  1198. Lord Jesus

  1199. Christ.

  1200. Christ.

  1201. When you

  1202. look at,

  1203. for example,

  1204. verse 10

  1205. here,

  1206. the priests

  1207. partook in

  1208. this grain

  1209. offering.

  1210. The rest

  1211. of the grain

  1212. offering

  1213. shall be

  1214. for Aaron

  1215. and his

  1216. sons.

  1217. It is a

  1218. most holy

  1219. part of

  1220. the Lord's

  1221. food

  1222. offerings.

  1223. The priests

  1224. were approving

  1225. of what they

  1226. were given,

  1227. and then they

  1228. were offering

  1229. this, or

  1230. they'd offered

  1231. it to God,

  1232. and they

  1233. took it

  1234. themselves.

  1235. There's that

  1236. sense of

  1237. this offering

  1238. is acceptable.

  1239. This offering

  1240. is right.

  1241. And when we

  1242. look at

  1243. Christ

  1244. ourselves,

  1245. we look at

  1246. Christ and

  1247. his role

  1248. of a priest,

  1249. offering

  1250. himself up

  1251. as a

  1252. sacrifice,

  1253. as it says,

  1254. to satisfy

  1255. divine justice

  1256. and reconcile

  1257. us to

  1258. God.

  1259. That is what

  1260. he is doing,

  1261. has done

  1262. for us.

  1263. And so

  1264. where is

  1265. our assurance

  1266. found?

  1267. It's not

  1268. in what we

  1269. can bring

  1270. to God.

  1271. It's in

  1272. giving

  1273. ourselves

  1274. to him.

  1275. It is

  1276. putting

  1277. ourselves

  1278. into his

  1279. hands

  1280. to come

  1281. with Christ

  1282. in view,

  1283. looking

  1284. to him,

  1285. to bow

  1286. humbly

  1287. before him,

  1288. to worship

  1289. with that

  1290. sense of

  1291. adoration,

  1292. that we

  1293. might find

  1294. assurance

  1295. of the

  1296. forgiveness

  1297. of our

  1298. sin,

  1299. of the

  1300. love of

  1301. God

  1302. to us

  1303. through

  1304. his

  1305. Son,

  1306. Jesus

  1307. Christ,

  1308. to have

  1309. that assurance

  1310. of knowing

  1311. the promises

  1312. of God,

  1313. the fulfillment

  1314. of his

  1315. scriptures to

  1316. us,

  1317. that God

  1318. so loved

  1319. the world

  1320. that he

  1321. gave his

  1322. only Son,

  1323. that whoever

  1324. believes in

  1325. him should

  1326. not perish

  1327. but have

  1328. everlasting

  1329. life.

  1330. when you

  1331. think of

  1332. these words

  1333. in light

  1334. of where

  1335. the people

  1336. were here,

  1337. they know

  1338. the love

  1339. of God

  1340. because God

  1341. has remembered

  1342. them and

  1343. so they

  1344. are to

  1345. remember

  1346. him.

  1347. They know

  1348. the goodness

  1349. of God.

  1350. They are to

  1351. come and

  1352. give to

  1353. him as

  1354. he has

  1355. given to

  1356. us.

  1357. He gave

  1358. his Son.

  1359. and they

  1360. are to

  1361. look to

  1362. him.

  1363. We are

  1364. to look

  1365. to him

  1366. with that

  1367. sense of

  1368. thanksgiving

  1369. that he

  1370. has remembered

  1371. us in that

  1372. way and

  1373. come

  1374. believing

  1375. and then

  1376. we have

  1377. that assurance

  1378. of eternal

  1379. life

  1380. from him.

  1381. God

  1382. has been

  1383. good to

  1384. us.

  1385. He is

  1386. due

  1387. our

  1388. thanksgiving.

  1389. he is

  1390. due

  1391. our

  1392. worship,

  1393. a worship

  1394. that is

  1395. a sacrifice

  1396. pleasing

  1397. to him.

  1398. And why

  1399. would we

  1400. not?

  1401. When as the

  1402. hymn writer

  1403. says,

  1404. and when I

  1405. think that

  1406. God his

  1407. Son not

  1408. sparing sent

  1409. him to

  1410. die,

  1411. I scarce

  1412. can take

  1413. it in,

  1414. that on the

  1415. cross my

  1416. burden

  1417. gladly bearing,

  1418. he bled

  1419. and died

  1420. to take

  1421. away my

  1422. sin.

  1423. when Christ

  1424. shall come

  1425. with shout

  1426. of acclamation

  1427. and take

  1428. me home,

  1429. what joy

  1430. shall fill

  1431. my heart.

  1432. Then shall

  1433. I bow

  1434. in humble

  1435. adoration

  1436. and there

  1437. proclaim,

  1438. my God,

  1439. how great

  1440. thou art.

  1441. Bow with

  1442. humble

  1443. adoration.

  1444. That is

  1445. what we

  1446. are to do,

  1447. to come

  1448. with that

  1449. worship

  1450. of humility

  1451. and adoration

  1452. and dependence

  1453. on him,

  1454. saying,

  1455. not about

  1456. us,

  1457. but my

  1458. God,

  1459. how great

  1460. thou art.

  1461. And so

  1462. may our

  1463. worship,

  1464. simple as

  1465. it may seem,

  1466. as this grain

  1467. offering might

  1468. seem,

  1469. may our

  1470. worship be

  1471. filled with

  1472. that holiness

  1473. and that

  1474. aroma,

  1475. that richness

  1476. of thanksgiving

  1477. to him

  1478. for all

  1479. that he

  1480. has done.

  1481. Let us

  1482. pray.

  1483. Lord,

  1484. our gracious

  1485. God,

  1486. we do

  1487. thank you

  1488. for your

  1489. word.

  1490. We thank

  1491. you for

  1492. the way

  1493. all is

  1494. God-breathed

  1495. and how

  1496. the wonder

  1497. of you,

  1498. the way

  1499. you spoke

  1500. to your

  1501. people in

  1502. the days

  1503. of Moses,

  1504. how you

  1505. gave instruction

  1506. to them,

  1507. how you

  1508. guided them

  1509. in every

  1510. aspect of

  1511. life and

  1512. worship.

  1513. we thank

  1514. you that

  1515. that still

  1516. rings through

  1517. to us

  1518. today,

  1519. that everything

  1520. that we

  1521. are to do,

  1522. everything that

  1523. we have,

  1524. everything that

  1525. we see in

  1526. our lives,

  1527. is to bring

  1528. us to that

  1529. sense of

  1530. adoration and

  1531. worship of

  1532. you.

  1533. We pray,

  1534. Lord,

  1535. this evening

  1536. and for

  1537. God willing

  1538. tomorrow,

  1539. that our

  1540. worship and

  1541. all that we

  1542. do in

  1543. remembering

  1544. our

  1545. Saviour,

  1546. the Lord

  1547. Jesus Christ,

  1548. that it

  1549. would be

  1550. acceptable to

  1551. you,

  1552. that it

  1553. would be

  1554. done in a

  1555. right spirit,

  1556. that we

  1557. would come

  1558. not looking

  1559. to ourselves,

  1560. but looking

  1561. to Christ,

  1562. our Lord,

  1563. our Redeemer.

  1564. Hear us

  1565. in our

  1566. prayers,

  1567. fill us

  1568. with adoration,

  1569. bless us

  1570. as your

  1571. people,

  1572. and go

  1573. before us

  1574. in all

  1575. things,

  1576. forgiving

  1577. our sin,

  1578. in Jesus'

  1579. name,

  1580. Amen.

  1581. Amen.

  1582. we'll

  1583. conclude by

  1584. singing to

  1585. God's

  1586. praise in

  1587. Psalm 117,

  1588. the

  1589. Sing

  1590. Psalms

  1591. version,

  1592. Psalm 117,

  1593. page 155,

  1594. the tune is

  1595. Regent

  1596. Square,

  1597. Praise the

  1598. Lord,

  1599. all you

  1600. nations,

  1601. all you

  1602. peoples,

  1603. sing his

  1604. praise,

  1605. for his

  1606. love is

  1607. great towards

  1608. his commitment,

  1609. lasts always,

  1610. he is

  1611. faithful now

  1612. and ever,

  1613. hallelujah,

  1614. praise the

  1615. Lord.

  1616. Psalm 117,

  1617. the Sing

  1618. Psalms version,

  1619. to God's

  1620. praise.

  1621. praise the

  1622. Lord,

  1623. all you

  1624. nations,

  1625. all you

  1626. peoples,

  1627. sing his

  1628. praise,

  1629. for his

  1630. love is

  1631. great towards

  1632. us,

  1633. his

  1634. commitment,

  1635. lasts

  1636. always,

  1637. he is

  1638. faithful now

  1639. and ever,

  1640. hallelujah,

  1641. praise the

  1642. Lord.

  1643. This

  1644. mercy and

  1645. peace from

  1646. God,

  1647. Father,

  1648. Son,

  1649. and Holy

  1650. Spirit rest

  1651. upon and

  1652. abide with

  1653. you all now

  1654. and forever

  1655. more.

  1656. Amen.
