  1. We are all here to continue talking about some

  2. spiritual practices, some of those habits, those

  3. things that we can do as we continue to follow

  4. in the way of Jesus. And today we're talking

  5. about the spiritual practice of fasting. And

  6. fasting is, I think, a particularly interesting

  7. practice because it's hard. It's something that's

  8. really challenging that people don't really like

  9. to do. But it also... Like sometimes it's not

  10. super obvious, like why, why you would do it.

  11. Like what, what is the benefit of being hungry?

  12. Right. And how does that actually help us grow

  13. in our spiritual life? So hopefully we can unpack

  14. that a little bit in our conversation today.

  15. But first, before we get into that, what is the

  16. spiritual practice of fasting? Like if you were

  17. to give a sort of basic definition, what, what

  18. would you say that it is? Hugh? Well, I would

  19. say that it's a temporary off -period abstaining

  20. from food and sometimes even water. But by temporary,

  21. I mean it could be for a couple of hours, it

  22. could be a morning, it could be for a day. Some

  23. people have fasted for a week, whereas Jesus

  24. fasted for 40 days. So there are different kinds

  25. of fast, different kinds of periods of fast.

  26. Okay, yeah, but it's that temporary period going

  27. with the food. Temporary period, yes. Yeah, that's

  28. a really sort of basic, clear definition. What

  29. would you add to that, Elizabeth? To me, the

  30. spiritual practice of fasting is the willingness.

  31. Temporary refraining from food or other necessities

  32. like social media or other technologies in order

  33. to focus on God cultivates self -discipline and

  34. deepening in prayer, meditation, and scripture

  35. reading. Right. It acts as a physical expression

  36. of spiritual hunger. promoting humility, repentance,

  37. depending or trusting in God. Okay. Yeah, so

  38. there's a couple of things that you've sort of

  39. added in there. So one is that you're not just

  40. going without food, that you're adding some sort

  41. of a spiritual practice into that. So you're

  42. adding in prayer, you're adding in worship, a

  43. focus on God, scripture reading, and that sort

  44. of thing. And then the other piece is that fasting

  45. like most specifically and technically is about

  46. food. Usually that's the sort of traditional

  47. understanding, but we can practice other kinds

  48. of like abstinence that, that sometimes people

  49. would call fasting. Right. So, you know, saying,

  50. okay, I'm going to give up social media for a

  51. week or for a month or however long, I'm just

  52. not going to do that today. Or I'm going to give

  53. up, you know, TV or give up. shopping or give

  54. up i don't know whatever whatever kind of habit

  55. the thing that fills your days that is maybe

  56. not necessarily productive yeah um yeah okay

  57. um yeah what about for you amav when you think

  58. about like what is fasting uh well when i think

  59. of fasting i think of it from the muslim perspective

  60. um again i was born and raised in to islam and

  61. muslim fasting is one of the five pillars of

  62. islam it's one of those things where Any able

  63. Muslim is supposed to fast. And there is a big

  64. component of it, which is on the lack of food

  65. and water. Basically, you have to finish eating

  66. and drinking an hour before sunrise, and then

  67. you can break your fast at sunset, at the sunset

  68. prayers. Okay. There probably is a spiritual

  69. component aside from... uh, empathy with those

  70. who don't have food and, and like, and like being

  71. humble and all that. I'm sure there's other sort

  72. of like spiritual things, but I mean, I don't

  73. even remember if I was ever told that I didn't

  74. have an interest in that. I don't have any, any

  75. more not being Muslim, but, uh, you know, it's

  76. sort of, uh, You know, a lot of the things, it

  77. sort of ended up being, well, you know, this

  78. is what the Prophet Muhammad did, this is what

  79. we have to do. Right, so it was like an instruction,

  80. a thing that you were supposed to do as sort

  81. of part of the faith and part of like emulating

  82. your spiritual leaders and that sort of a thing.

  83. Yes, and from what I'm understanding is that

  84. Christian fasting is... is optional it's not

  85. something you have to do right and it can be

  86. done at any time sure this with muslim fasting

  87. it's always the month in the month of ramadan

  88. which uh which uh has already ended a couple

  89. days ago right uh and you know and that's again,

  90. whenever you list the month of Ramadan, that's

  91. when all Muslims are supposed to be fasting.

  92. Right. Yeah. So I think that there, there are

  93. some similarities. So you talked about like empathy.

  94. You talked about, you know, maybe there's a spiritual

  95. focus on humility. Like, like Elizabeth talked

  96. about, there is a sense of emulating like Jesus

  97. fasted. And so maybe that's one of the reasons

  98. that Christians fast as well as to emulate Christ.

  99. So there's some connection, but I think you also

  100. pointed out there are some intentional and important

  101. differences. Right. So as you said, sort of,

  102. Christian fasting is often viewed as optional

  103. and we can debate the extent to which it's optional

  104. or, you know, Jesus says when you fast. So is

  105. Jesus sort of expecting that of us? But regardless

  106. of all of the whether or not this is necessary,

  107. why would we do it? Why? What's the point of

  108. not eating and making yourself hungry? Yeah.

  109. What? Why? Why would we do that? Yeah. The reason

  110. why we do it, because Jesus fasted 40 days and

  111. 40 nights. And also, you know, we do, Christian

  112. does it in order to be humble, to focus more

  113. on God, you know, to, like I said before, to

  114. pray, meditate, and to read the word of God.

  115. Right. That word, we can't just read the word

  116. of God alone. We have to read it and apply it

  117. into our daily life. Okay, so how do you think

  118. that fasting helps you to do that? Fasting helps

  119. me to stay humble and to be more focused. Okay,

  120. because you're not distracted by preparing food.

  121. Yeah. Okay. pleasure you know okay okay okay

  122. so it helped me to focus more on god sure to

  123. think of you know spiritual things yeah not of

  124. the worldly things sure yeah yeah yeah because

  125. uh in the bible it says uh we are in this world

  126. yeah but we are not of the world right so we

  127. have to separate ourselves you know from It's

  128. kind of, you know, the way worldly people does

  129. things, even the mode of dress, you know, all

  130. those things. We have to dress modestly and all

  131. that. Yeah. Okay. So it's partly a way of sort

  132. of recognizing that. Not everything that my body

  133. wants is actually good for me. Not everything

  134. that I feel drawn towards is good. And food is

  135. not bad, obviously. But yeah, it is that way

  136. of saying, I am more than my body. I am an embodied

  137. person, and that is super important. But I am

  138. more than my body, and I need to focus on the

  139. spiritual things. It's sort of a way of training

  140. yourself to do that. Yeah, okay. What would you

  141. say, Hugh? Why fast? Well, I think there are

  142. many reasons why we need to fast. But one is

  143. to create a space for God in our lives. And,

  144. you know, Jesus said, man does not live by bread

  145. alone. And so we need to create a space where

  146. we're hungry for God. And by leaving the food

  147. out of it, we leave out another distraction out

  148. of our lives. And it's another way of focusing

  149. on God. And so that's that's one reason to do

  150. it. Other reasons would be when you have an important

  151. decision to make discernment. When you fast,

  152. you really you really you're on your knees and

  153. you're saying, Jesus. I don't want any distractions.

  154. I want just to focus on you so that I can get

  155. your guidance and I can get your next steps on

  156. this decision. So that's another way that people

  157. fast. And it shows really a more total dependence

  158. on God when you fast because you've left everything

  159. of the world because food is so much a part of.

  160. what we consider the world sure so when food

  161. is gone then then we really um we're really saying

  162. god i'm really totally dependent on you and yeah

  163. what you know yeah yeah yeah for sure yeah i

  164. think it's interesting because when we think

  165. about we think about food as a distraction. I

  166. think the immediate like sort of counter argument

  167. that comes into my mind is like, well, then won't

  168. I just be distracted by being hungry? Right.

  169. And if I'm just focused on being hungry all of

  170. the time, like, is that actually less of a distraction?

  171. But yeah, I don't know. In your experience, like

  172. has hunger been a distraction in your practices

  173. of fasting or has it been something that. you

  174. sort of work through like i don't know it can

  175. be what yeah it can be it's uh i mean even like

  176. with muslim fasting you know you're dealing with

  177. you know hunger thirst headache tiredness weakness

  178. all that kind of stuff but i think what connects

  179. both islam and christianity in that fasting practice

  180. is it's mind over matter it's pushing through

  181. these bodily feelings and and things that are

  182. going on you know and i mean i think part of

  183. it is you know is also like that's where you

  184. really have to focus on god because i mean it

  185. was jesus was tempted during those 40 days by

  186. the devil it wasn't jesus didn't have a full

  187. belly of food and drink and he was all relaxed

  188. no he was he was fighting through all of his

  189. uh you know, the fasting and then, and it was

  190. there that he was tempted. Sure. You know, in

  191. a week in probably in a physically weakened state.

  192. Sure. You know? So I think we have to sort of

  193. like, I think it's a way for, I guess in a Christian

  194. perspective, it would be a way to really, you

  195. know, it's either going to strengthen us or we're

  196. going to give in. Right. And we have to be strengthened,

  197. not given. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's for me,

  198. it hasn't been a distraction. It's it really

  199. helps with the distractions. It's it clears my

  200. mind. Sure. And but, you know, not as much of

  201. a distraction as when I'm doing a quiet time,

  202. you know, and I'm trying to be quiet that way.

  203. the fasting really clears your mind. It prepares

  204. you for that really important meeting with God.

  205. And it brings you into... I think it's that clarity

  206. that also is an act of renewal. It's an act of

  207. renewal of your mind, your soul, your heart towards

  208. God. And that renewal is really important. It's

  209. interesting. Sometimes you have to give something

  210. up to get more. Sure. So to be renewed, you have

  211. to give up, to give something. Yeah. And it's

  212. also an identification of solidarity, if you

  213. want, with the poor. Although we're so rich in

  214. our culture, but it's a small, small experience

  215. of identifying with the poor or those that don't

  216. have three meals a day or that don't have the

  217. quality of food that we have. And I think there's

  218. many areas in Scripture where Jesus suggests

  219. that we identify with those that don't have as

  220. much as we do. And so fasting reminds us of that.

  221. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think about like in

  222. some of my experiences of fasting, most recently

  223. I have sometimes, not regularly, but sometimes

  224. adopted this fasting where you don't eat breakfast

  225. or lunch and then you break the fast sort of

  226. at dinner time. And this has been a pattern that

  227. I've done a few times. And I'll find, okay. skipping

  228. breakfast is like not ideal but like it's fine

  229. but then by lunchtime i'm like oh i am actually

  230. hungry um and there is that moment where that

  231. hunger feels like a bit of a distraction but

  232. it doesn't then continue to feel like a distraction

  233. for the entire afternoon like it's kind of this

  234. like intense period that then i can say okay

  235. no i'm gonna Use those hunger cues as a cue to

  236. prayer, as a cue to scripture reading. And then

  237. continue to just like move about my day. And

  238. it doesn't it doesn't seem to be, at least in

  239. my experience, an ongoing distraction. Oh, that's

  240. good. So what has called each of you to fast?

  241. Because it's not like because, again, in Islam,

  242. it's more of an obligation. This is a Christianity.

  243. It's a choice. So what? What leads you to say,

  244. you know, I'm going to fast today? Sure. Yeah,

  245. that's totally. The problems of living. Okay.

  246. Well, then I guess we'll always be hungry because

  247. there's so many problems of living. We have so

  248. many times in our lives where we hit the brick

  249. wall, you know, and we need guidance and we need

  250. support. We need strength. And fasting is a really.

  251. a terrific i think very rich spiritual practice

  252. that gives us that guidance you know when we

  253. have an important decision to make um when you

  254. know we we're looking for uh for a partner we

  255. have uh i don't know critical job decision to

  256. make. We have an issue in relationships. You

  257. know, the problems of living. I think fasting

  258. really comes in there and really helps us. Right.

  259. So for you, fasting has been something that's

  260. really helped you in important decision making

  261. and discernment. For sure. Taking that time to

  262. listen to God. For sure. What about for you,

  263. Elizabeth? For me, you know, when I was growing

  264. up, our parents make it compost free. Okay. Okay.

  265. So there was a little bit of, this is just what

  266. you have to do. Yeah. So fast, you know, those

  267. years, you know, you thought maybe they are so

  268. strict and all that. Yeah. Why, why, why do they

  269. want us to go through hunger and all that? But,

  270. um, it's a commandment, you know, because Jesus

  271. Christ fasted. Uh, so that is what they, put

  272. in now if that is what they embedded in our mind

  273. that time that you know okay you always say you

  274. are a follower of jesus christ jesus christ go

  275. through this fasting so why can't you go through

  276. it sure so that's number one and again weekly

  277. my mom she used to fast wednesday and So, you

  278. know, she also encouraged us to do that. So I've

  279. been doing it all my life. And even on Sunday,

  280. you know, after I did the confirmation at our

  281. church back in Nigeria, I decided on Sundays,

  282. being the Sabbath day, that I, you know, I should

  283. fast. It's just the prompting that I got. So

  284. I don't eat breakfast. If you notice me, everybody

  285. always drinking water. So I skip that. The first

  286. thing that I put in my mouth, apart from brushing

  287. my teeth, is Holy Communion on Sundays. So after

  288. then, I can... Okay. So it's been part of my

  289. life. Fasting has been what empowers me to do

  290. God's will. And when I need prayer, it helps

  291. me to focus more on prayer. Because fasting is

  292. like a boost that takes your prayer to the throne

  293. of grace. help prayer answered faster than, you

  294. know, normal prayer. So that's my belief. And

  295. that is what I've been, you know, I've been going

  296. through all my life. Yeah. So it's just sort

  297. of become part of your rhythm. Yeah. It's something

  298. that you feel like God has compelled you to do

  299. something that you feel able to do. Yeah. Yeah.

  300. Yeah. I think for me, the first time as an adult,

  301. I guess that I did, And actually, maybe really

  302. the first time that I did fasting sort of intentionally

  303. as a spiritual practice, I was in Bible school.

  304. And so, again, I was sort of instructed to do

  305. it. And but the purpose of this day. So it was

  306. like a sort of silent retreat day. So it's like,

  307. OK, so you do fasting and, you know, you do some

  308. prayer and scripture reading. But then another

  309. part of this day. was that we had this sort of

  310. 24 -7 prayer room situation. And we were supposed

  311. to all sign up for an hour and go and pray with

  312. a focus on praying for the persecuted church.

  313. So praying for Christians around the world who

  314. are experiencing suffering because of their faith.

  315. And what I found in that moment was that there

  316. was something about coming to that space of prayer.

  317. in a physically vulnerable state, like being

  318. hungry, that somehow like deepened my ability

  319. to pray for people who were suffering. And I

  320. can't explain it. I can't be like, oh, this is

  321. exactly how that worked. But it just like it

  322. felt different to me. And it felt like a little

  323. bit like solidarity, a little bit like empathy.

  324. But it was just this space of being able to say,

  325. OK, I am. suffering with the suffering church

  326. definitely not to the same level at all like

  327. i'm not saying that but like there was a sense

  328. of feeling connected it helps happen to that

  329. empathy yeah yeah i think so yeah and so that's

  330. been something that i'll sometimes come back

  331. to when i'm like yeah when i like want to be

  332. praying for a specific thing or yeah sometimes

  333. like you said when i'm like trying to really

  334. make a decision um or just feeling like okay

  335. i need I need some more clear space in my life.

  336. Yeah. That fasting is helpful then. I've been

  337. to a church in Canada here that every first Sunday

  338. of the month we have to fast. Okay. And then

  339. that equivalent to the breakfast dollar that's...

  340. we are going to use for that breakfast, we always

  341. donate it to the less fortunate individuals.

  342. Right, so you look at your sort of budget and

  343. you say, okay, I would have spent $20 on food

  344. today, for example, and so I'm going to donate

  345. that $20 to a charity of some sort that helps

  346. folks who are suffering. Yeah, so that's sort

  347. of... the what and the why and the experience

  348. of it. This feels like an obvious question, but

  349. what is hard about Fasten? What makes it a challenging

  350. thing for us to sort of... Well, it's a discipline.

  351. It's a spiritual practice. And so you've got

  352. to be sort of intentional about it and say, you

  353. know, I'm going to fast. And not just for fasting,

  354. but for a reason. There's a reason for fasting.

  355. But it's a practice like any other spiritual

  356. practice that we've discussed so far. There's

  357. a discipline component to it. For sure. For sure.

  358. Yeah. Yeah. I think so last week when we were

  359. talking about. Sabbath, one of the things that

  360. I said was that it's important if you're going

  361. to practice Sabbath that you get your household

  362. on board with that. I would say the same thing

  363. about fasting. Now, I think you can decide that

  364. you are fasting and that doesn't mean that you

  365. need to force everybody in your household to

  366. fast with you. Sometimes that's actually super

  367. helpful if you and your partner or whoever can

  368. fast together. That's great. But at least letting

  369. them know that that's what's happening. Especially

  370. if you're not the cook. Yes, that's right. Your

  371. wife cooks you this lovely dinner and then you

  372. show up and you say, oh, actually, I'm fasting.

  373. I'll enjoy the five hours and I can have my fast.

  374. Yeah. So, yes, I think that communication piece

  375. is important. Yeah. I don't know. Is there anything

  376. else that you feel like something that makes

  377. it particularly challenging to fast? I think

  378. it's just understanding. why you want to fast

  379. that day that's that because again i mean like

  380. especially i guess it's it can be tricky especially

  381. when you're a younger person and you're told

  382. to fast you know you don't know why but this

  383. is just what we do or so yeah so i think it's

  384. important that it especially as an adult if you're

  385. gonna fast you gotta have to have in mind What

  386. do you want out of it? What are you gaining out

  387. of it? And how long do you even want to fast

  388. for? Because it doesn't have to be an hour before

  389. sunrise until sunset, no food, no water, like

  390. with Islam. So I think that's important. And

  391. I think it can be a challenging thing if you

  392. don't realize that as well. is part of your faith

  393. journey and you know like like elizabeth said

  394. you know if you're a follower of christ well

  395. christ fasted right so that is more of an incentive

  396. to fast because we all want to live like jesus

  397. and follow his teachings and his ways So you're

  398. more motivated, you know, versus if, well, mom

  399. and dad said, so we're all fasting. You know

  400. what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think your point

  401. is well taken. You have to have a why to fast.

  402. I grew up as Catholic, so we had to fast every

  403. Friday, but we only had fish. and i thought i

  404. could never understand that that the why wasn't

  405. there why can't i have fish and chips why can't

  406. i have black licorice too with that because i

  407. really love black licorice sure yeah yeah but

  408. so we but we could we fast but it's just fish

  409. but why why so there was no why so it was very

  410. very difficult yeah yeah yeah for sure yeah i

  411. think that also makes me think about You know,

  412. some of these practical questions are super important.

  413. The like when and the how and the what. Right.

  414. Because there is fasting that is abstaining from

  415. all food. There's fasting that includes abstaining

  416. from water. There's some fasting that is, you

  417. know, I will only eat a certain type of food.

  418. So I only eat fish or only fruits and vegetables.

  419. And then, yeah, there's all of these practices

  420. of abstinence as well, of just getting rid of

  421. some habit or some. practice in your life that

  422. you want to sort of get rid of. Um, yeah. To,

  423. to help you focus on, on something else. Um,

  424. yeah. So just thinking through the practicalities

  425. of it sort of ahead of time. Yeah. And I think

  426. the bigger picture to Hugh's point is especially

  427. if you're a Christian, that's raising a family

  428. is when you're raising kids, they need to have

  429. a why they need to have an understanding because,

  430. you know, let's just face it. Fasting is not

  431. a fun practice. It's not. Nobody goes, oh, boy,

  432. I get to stay abstain from food and water. Yay.

  433. You know, nobody does that. But it's like if

  434. you know why you're suffering, at least for temporarily.

  435. Yeah. It makes a difference because, you know,

  436. you want to think you think about because you

  437. could think of fasting as a negative thing and

  438. a thing to draw you away from Christ and away

  439. from Christianity. You know, so you need to be

  440. able to. Your kids have to know when they're

  441. old enough that this is why we fast and this

  442. is the purpose of it. And, you know, so that

  443. they can continue on. And I think especially

  444. it's important in a Christian household to let

  445. them know that, you know, it doesn't have to

  446. be an every week thing. It doesn't have to be,

  447. you know, it can be when you need that discernment.

  448. Sure. So, yeah. And don't drive them by a Swiss

  449. chalet. Temptation. Yes, yes, yes. That might

  450. be hard in the city where everything has a drive

  451. -thru. I know. Yeah. Okay, so it's really hard,

  452. and we've talked about some of the whys, but

  453. what makes it worthwhile? Have any of you ever

  454. had experiences where you fasted and you felt,

  455. okay, that was worth it, even though it was hard?

  456. And what made it feel worthwhile? I had a really

  457. important decision to make at one point in my

  458. life. I went back to school a couple of times,

  459. but the last time I went back, I was 38, and

  460. I had three children, 12, 11, and 9. And so we

  461. had to sell our house because I was doing a doctorate,

  462. and I had to be on campus in those days for two

  463. years. And so I had to go. if I was going to

  464. do that. Huge decision. For sure. You've got

  465. three kids, you sell your house, and you may

  466. or may not have enough money to last you two

  467. years. And is that really what God is calling

  468. me? Sure. You're wrestling with that call. For

  469. sure. Because the world's saying, oh, you've

  470. got a good job, you've got a nice house, why

  471. are you doing this? And yet the call of God is

  472. saying, because I'm calling you, I'm calling

  473. you to something else. So we spent, my wife and

  474. I spent probably most of the day on our knees

  475. fasting. And really asking for clarity and asking

  476. for a renewed vision, a renewed conviction that

  477. this was the call. And I think the result was

  478. that we felt renewed. We felt the renewed call

  479. after spending that time in fasting. And that,

  480. you know, led us to follow up on the decision.

  481. But when you have those important decisions,

  482. even the healthy, decision sometimes. You know,

  483. if you're facing a really difficult health decision,

  484. fasting will really, will really, will really

  485. help. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's like asking

  486. Jesus. Even when you're going for some medical

  487. test, you know, they will ask you to fast, you

  488. know, in order to, to do the test then so that

  489. you will get proper result for blood work usually.

  490. Yeah. So what about for you, Elizabeth? What

  491. do you find joyful or helpful about fasting?

  492. It renews my mind and strength. I remember when

  493. I was in Nigeria in 1987, I went to a retreat

  494. and there was a prophetic ministration going

  495. on and I was called and I was told that I would

  496. be trapped. I don't even dream of my, my siblings

  497. are in United States that time, but I don't even

  498. think of traveling, you know? So then there was

  499. a prophecy that I'm going to travel. But before,

  500. that traveling before that this i can get the

  501. visa that i have to fast for 21 days so i was

  502. looking and you know like but oh my gosh i i

  503. believe in god but i was looking and yeah but

  504. i i went through the fasting and um Within a

  505. few weeks, that visa came through. Then in 1988,

  506. I traveled to the United States. So, you know,

  507. sometimes first thing open doors that you don't

  508. even expect that it will open. Fasting, I can

  509. tell you a lot of testimony about my life. Yeah,

  510. how you've seen the effect. Yeah, even my daughter,

  511. you know, within my family, I can, you know,

  512. through the power of fasting, you know, prayer,

  513. answer, and things turn around from worst to

  514. good. Yeah, it's so interesting because I think

  515. that there's there's a careful line we need to

  516. walk here where like fasting does do these really

  517. powerful things in our lives and through us.

  518. And we see answered prayer. And I don't want

  519. to then say that like somehow we fast and we

  520. like get to earn these good things. Right. We

  521. don't fast and then God pays more attention to

  522. us because we're fasting. That's not how it works.

  523. I don't know exactly how it works, but there

  524. is. Some spiritual power that's there. It helps

  525. us to pay more attention to God rather than the

  526. other way around. Well, I think it's like with,

  527. I don't know if it was last week's sermon or

  528. the week before, but how Rob was saying, you

  529. know, yeah, it's not our works that get us to

  530. heaven, but God appreciates those works, especially

  531. if it's in Jesus' name. Right, right. And those

  532. works... form us into the image of christ exactly

  533. yeah yeah yeah for sure because yeah you don't

  534. have to do any of it but and you can believe

  535. in jesus but you know there's more sort of like

  536. you know how you know how well did you follow

  537. jesus you know because i don't think i i mean

  538. i don't know if everybody that gets to heaven

  539. will hear jesus say well done my good and faithful

  540. servant they may They may get entered, but you

  541. know, it's just, I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe.

  542. Yeah. I think it's like, is it reserved for people

  543. that actually try to walk the path of Jesus?

  544. Sure. You know, and, and do those practices.

  545. Cause I mean, the whole point with the series

  546. is to be more like, live more like Jesus and

  547. follow his teachings and his practices. Yeah.

  548. Yeah. Yeah. And so fasting just like is. is a

  549. way that that happens, right? And it's a way

  550. we become more Christ -like, I think. Even if

  551. we don't understand exactly how that works. Even

  552. if we can't say that there's an... that a causes

  553. b right that i fasted and therefore i got a visa

  554. right like it looks like that and like maybe

  555. there's some causation there but like yeah we

  556. don't know exactly how all of the pieces fit

  557. we don't know how god works yeah we're just supposed

  558. to follow god they're not supposed to ask yeah

  559. we're not supposed to ask god well why are you

  560. asking me to do this sure sure i mean there's

  561. space for that i think we definitely can ask

  562. god those questions but we don't need to know

  563. the answer to the question in order to live the

  564. life of faith. God will reveal it in time. Yeah.

  565. Okay. So then as you think about fasting, like

  566. this is in some ways a really tangible practice.

  567. It's something that requires some practical preparation

  568. and sort of steps. So then what sort of tips

  569. would you have to offer to people who want to

  570. try and practice fasting? What are some important

  571. things to sort of keep in mind? What would you

  572. say, Elizabeth? They should just start gradually,

  573. you know. Sure. Maybe one step at a time. If

  574. you can't fast all day, you can break your fast

  575. at noon. Sometimes if you have the strength,

  576. you can break your fast at 3 p .m. Sure. Or if

  577. you if God empowers you, you can break your fast

  578. at 6 p .m. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. So just doing it

  579. in the chunks that sort of work for you. Yeah.

  580. Yeah. What else would we say? I would I would

  581. go and suggest that they go into the scripture

  582. and see all the times that. that the scriptural

  583. characters fasted and why they fasted. And that

  584. might give them an idea of, of the reasons for

  585. fasting. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's interesting.

  586. So when you sort of go through scripture, so

  587. obviously we have this example of Jesus and Jesus

  588. was preparing for his ministry. We have examples

  589. of Daniel and some of the others who were living

  590. in Babylon and under this oppression. Yeah. And,

  591. and the example of Esther, And so Esther was

  592. asking folks to fast because she had this really

  593. important decision to make. So sort of like you

  594. were saying, Daniel was fasting as a way of standing

  595. up against empire, as a way of saying, I don't

  596. want to be like my culture. I want to be shaped

  597. by God. Right. Yeah. I think there are other

  598. reasons, like sometimes people will fast because

  599. they're struggling with. some sort of a sin in

  600. their life and sometimes it's it's it's a really

  601. fleshly or like bodily sin so like struggling

  602. with you know gluttony or with lust or struggling

  603. with pride and greed and like sometimes fasting

  604. is a way of challenging those sins quite directly

  605. by saying i am Not going to let my body have

  606. a say in what I want and how I behave. And it

  607. brings you to repentance. So when you focus on

  608. fasting, you know, it makes you humble because

  609. you have to look at the way Jesus was humble

  610. and the way he associated with his disciples.

  611. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think the other another practical

  612. consideration is that this is a very physical

  613. bodily practice. And so you need to listen to

  614. and take care of your body in this practice.

  615. Right. And for some people, fasting from food

  616. is just not something that they will physically

  617. be able to do because of health condition or

  618. whatever. Right. And there's there's no shame

  619. in that. Right. There are other practices of

  620. abstinence or ways of doing fasting that will

  621. work for those people. And if you're concerned

  622. about that at all, and maybe even if you're not

  623. concerned, it like is worth like bringing it

  624. up and talking with your doctor and being like,

  625. okay, this is a practice that I want to integrate.

  626. Like, what should I be aware of? Especially,

  627. you know, if you have certain health conditions

  628. or if you're taking certain medications, you

  629. know, just making sure that you gather all of

  630. that information so that you are taking care

  631. of yourself even as you're doing this practice.

  632. Yeah. I think it's important to the, that. fasting

  633. is not always physical but that's what we always

  634. think of you know whether it's for a medical

  635. test or religious or thing you know or you know

  636. but uh i think as well the other thing i would

  637. say with the tip wise is um the way like fasting

  638. and keeping the sabbath are kind of two sides

  639. of the same coin in a way like the sabbath is

  640. like almost like a digital detox you know it's

  641. a digital fast it's a getting rid of that you

  642. know and then obviously fasting is a physical

  643. getting rid of but what's important with both

  644. is what are you filling that space and that time

  645. with? Yeah. You know, if you're just not eating

  646. and you're just miserable and doing nothing or,

  647. or, or you're, or you're, or you're, or if you're

  648. fasting and then just like, I don't know, watching

  649. food network videos or something like that. Well,

  650. you're not doing it. You're not doing any good,

  651. but if you're in prayer, if you're in meditation,

  652. if you're reading the Bible, if you're doing

  653. that thing, you know. Again, if you're going

  654. to give up something, you have to fill it with

  655. something else. Yeah, yeah, for sure. For sure.

  656. Making that space. Yeah. And then I think the

  657. last thing I would sort of say is like having

  658. a plan. Right. So and being flexible with that

  659. plan. Right. So if your plan is, OK, I'm going

  660. to fast until 3 p .m. and you get to noon and

  661. you feel like this is unbearable, like that's

  662. OK. And then having a plan. OK, so knowing, OK,

  663. I have some water available. I have some food

  664. readily available so that when I'm ready to break

  665. my fast, I can do that sort of easily. Yeah.

  666. Just getting all of those practical considerations.

  667. Yeah. Yeah. Fasting is like I like I started

  668. out by saying it's really hard, but it is really

  669. powerful, I think. And it's something that I

  670. think. I know I spent a lot of my life sort of

  671. brushing it off and sort of saying, well, fasting

  672. isn't really that important. Fasting is for a

  673. certain subset of Christians who are like really

  674. super spiritual or who are like really believe

  675. in that. And I don't know, it's just sort of

  676. over there. But I think it is something that

  677. we can all participate in in some way and something

  678. that, yeah, is formational in surprising ways

  679. sometimes. Yeah. So thank you so much, folks,

  680. for this conversation. And thank you for tuning

  681. in to this week's episode of Trinity Talks. Whether

  682. you decide to fast from food or not, whether

  683. you are going to go ahead and fast from social

  684. media or shopping or whatever. I hope that you

  685. can find some practice that works for you where

  686. you can remove distractions and find that time

  687. to really focus on God and to experience God's

  688. presence and power and compassion in the midst

  689. of that hardship that you are facing. And we

  690. will see you again next week.
